Ground control to pilots: All clear for Red Bull Paper Wings 2015 takeoff Air traffic across the world will sharply increase in May as the world’s best pilots will take on each other at the Red Bull Paper Wings World Finals in the iconic Hangar-7, home of the Flying Bulls in Salzburg/Austria on May 8 – 9.

SALZBURG – Forget cockpits, jet engines and the sweet smell of kerosene. All the equipment needed is an ordinary, commercial sheet of paper. But the recipe for success also requires a strong dose of exceptional folding abilities as well as creativity, imagination, and a grasp of basic aeronautic rules. More than 46,000 self-trained pilots have already put their extraordinary skills to the tests in a total of 535 tournaments across four continents to see who will make it to the world’s top paper plane contest.

Those lucky and skilled enough to qualify to the finals and represent one of the 80 countries in competition will put their skills to the test once more at Hangar-7 to compete amid the world’s most spectacular flying machines on display. The World Finals are a truly global sports event with the largest participation of countries known to a single event and 197 participants. A star-studded jury will pick the winners in the aerobatic discipline at the Red Bull Paper Wings World Finals 2015. Whether it is paper plane legends and world record holders such as

John Collins or Ken Blackburn, both of whom are returning judges to the competition, or double Olympic champion sailor Hans Peter Steinacher, daredevil wing walker Peggy Walentin or social media sensation Zach King. All five judges are true experts in what they do.

Tomas Beck, from the Czech Republic is the title holder when it comes to distance with a flight of 50.37 meters. Ryan Naccarato and Polandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tomasz Chodryra both shared the aerobatics world title last time.

Fold it, calibrate it and check the aerodynamics before releasing the plane for a place in the record books and a chance to dethrone Lebanonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Elie Chemaly, who won with the longest airtime of 10.68 seconds in 2012.

FLYING REINVENTED The magic of flying has fascinated people for thousands of years. Who cannot be left amazed when watching a bird or butterfly in full flight? We have an intuitive understanding of running or swimming.

We did not (yet) have it for flying. Our experience of flying is always associated with an artificial device. But paper is perhaps the thinnest barrier between us and the sky. The fascination of flying paper has to do with the simplicity of our designs, coupled with the perfection of their functions.

From Greek mythology to the first selfexperiment The first mention of â&#x20AC;&#x153;manned aviationâ&#x20AC;? can be found in Greek mythology. The gifted artisan Daedalus built for himself and his son Icarus in captivity, wings made of feathers and wax to fly from Crete to Sicily.

They succeed in reaching the islands of Samos, Delos and Levitha. Then, however, Icarus flew too close to the sun, his wings melting and crashing into the sea. Or so the story goes. This was followed by the documented attempts of Andalusian scholar Abbas Ibn Firnas, who flew in 875 in Cordoba with a construction of spring wings from a hill several hundred meters, crashing with both legs upon landing.

The same happened to an English Benedictine monk around 1,000 AD who jumped off a tower with his spring wings, flying some two hundred yards before a hard landing. The Iraqis worshipped "Abbas Ibn Firnas" so much as to name one of Baghdadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s four airports after him.

RED BULL PAPER WINGS OFFICIAL RULES Challenging the existing world records needs to be done according to the international rules developed by the Paper Aircraft Association (PAA) and the Guinness World Record regulations. Assuring world wide comparability of the results requires following these official Red Bull Paper Wings rules. These Rules are approved and officially stated by the Flight Director who will be responsible for their observation in order to ensure a fair competition. Protest can only be

done by the respective Country Team Captain and needs to be addressed to the Flight Director. The Flight Director can order recurrences.

LONGEST DISTANCE • All contests need to be held indoor without any wind. • Paper planes must only be constructed out of one piece of paper: standard A4 format, not more than 100 grams. The sheet must be modified by folding only! No ripping, gluing, cutting, stapling or ballasting is allowed! • P aper planes have to be built on site with the provided official paper. • T he aircraft must be launched by one person throwing the aircraft unaided from behind a straight launch line marked on the floor. Passing over the launch line leads to disqualification. Touching the launch line or

any point beyond during the launch, leads to an invalid attempt. After completion of the launch, the thrower may move beyond the launch line. • Two trials per participant are allowed. Different planes can be used, the better attempt counts • T he LONGEST DISTANCE has to be measured with a standardised tape measure or laser/ video facility. Decisive for measurement are the base point on the starting line and the first point where the paper plane hits the ground or any object. Results need to be counted in m/mm or feet.

Results are counted in tenth of seconds.

AEROBATICS • All contests need to be held indoor without any wind.

• The jury will the judge according to following criteria:

• T he planes body needs to be out of paper but there are no restrictions with regards to paper quality, size and construction technique of the used planes.

• P lanes are not allowed to be remote controlled.

• W ith regards to flight performance, the jury should base their points on the execution of the flight, e.g. diameter of the loop/wave/ circle; steadiness & duration of the flight.

• Support material is allowed but must not influence the flight once the plane is launched. • R eady-made planes can be brought along to the competition. • T here are no limitations with regards to the body style while throwing.. • T he performance is judged by a jury. Each jury member can award 1 to 10 points.

John Collins An aircraft designer and paper wings legend in his own right, John set a world record in distance in 2012 when Joe Ayoob sent the Collins-designed airplane constrwucted from a single sheet of uncut A4 paper flying for some 69.14 metres, (226 feet 10 inches) for a world record. Zach King A vine sensation and a huge hit among youngsters, Zach knows how to grab your attention. Initially famous for his short six-second edited videos that have him appear as if he creates magic. A string of awards, including Youtubeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s NextUp Creators award and scores of TV appearances later and Zach is known the world over for his eye-popping digital wizardry. Peggy Walentin the only woman on the panel but the biggest daredevil of all. Peggy rides on wings of planes for the last 16 years performing breath-taking stunts in front of large crowds. In a job where every little detail matter and everything must be calculated, Peggy know what it takes to a perfectionist. An enthusiastic pilot in her spare time, Peggy flies single and double engine planes and is also a flight instructor. Ken Blackburn Another living legend of paper planes, Ken is a world record holder for the longest airtime, clocking more than 27 seconds from a previous best set by him as well. An aeronautical engineer by profession Ken has been a paper plane enthusiast since a young kid. Hans Peter Steinacher is Austriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most successful summer Olympic champion, along with colleague and friend Roman Hagara, having twice won two gold in sailing at the Sydney 2000 Games and in Athens four years later. He and Hagara are also competing with the Red Bull Sailing Team in the Extreme Sailing Series. Hans-Peter, an enthusiastic pilot himself in his spare time, is a also sports director at the Red Bull Youth Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cup and the newly-launched Red Bull Foiling Generation where sailing boats fly above the water thanks to their radical design.

“There is always an undiscovered superstar” John Collins John Collins is a household name among paper plane throwers. A world record holder and returning Red Bull Paper Wings judge, John talks about his expectations of the 2015 World Final and the unique atmosphere of this event.

You are a legend among paper plane enthusiasts and coming back to the Red Bull Paper Wings World Finals as a judge. What do you expect from this year's competition and what would you like to see?

Every contest brings out fresh new faces, rounded up from college campuses all over the world. These are the Top Guns, and they’re coming to Salzburg to “throw down”. Paper airplanes have garnered global media attention since Red Bull Paper Wings took place for the first time in 2006. What can we expect as far as new designs, new ideas?

The variety of stunts and designs in aerobatics was jaw-dropping last time. I can’t wait to see what the returning champions will do this time to top themselves. And of course, there’s always an undiscovered superstar waiting to put on a breakthrough performance. The two way tie for first place in 2012 really showed the ferocity of the competition. I would expect to see more “Follow Foil” or

“Walk Along Wing” designs. I think the competitors will get better at telling the judges, in advance, what their planes will do; while leaving room for surprises. You have been a judge before. what makes Red Bull Paper Wings so special?

I think it is unique in the way it allows so many people to compete on a global scale. When you see all of the countries come together for an event like this, it’s a hopeful thing. It is all about excitement and adrenaline. The events create a mix of brute force, expertise, and spectacle. It’s classic paper airplane throwing. What makes Hangar-7 the ideal location for this event?

Hangar-7 tells the competitors “this just got real”. The reverence for flight is everywhere inside and out. The vintage planes, the modern sleek aerobatic aircraft, and the hangar design tell everyone this is a celebration of aviation. Flying machines large and small partake of the same miracle of defying gravity. Hangar-7 brings it home.

An accomplished pilot, she has also been a wing walker, defying gravity by stepping onto the wings of planes in full flight for more than 15 years. Now she will be a judge at Red Bull Paper Wings World Finals 2015. Less dangerous but equally demanding, she says.

You are a daredevil, a wing walker who has been doing this for the better part of two decades. How does it feel to judge a competition like Red Bull Paper Wings with your feet firmly on the ground?

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m very proud to be a part of the judges for this very special aviation event. As I have seen at the German Final in Friedrichshafen, there are unbelievable ideas and constructions from the aerobatic paper wing pilots and maybe a start for one or the other to start a pilot career! What are you looking forward to seeing? What do you expect from the competition?

Especially at the aerobatic category I think we will see very funny, unique and inventive constructions and performances. All the paper wing pilots are full of ideas and I am sure we will be astonished by what they can do with a piece of paper! How does this relate to what you do as a job?

Both are special, you must be well prepared and concentrated at the point to be best. What makes Hangar-7 the ideal location for this event?

A special place, full of aviation history, there is no better place for the best of the Red Bull Paper Wings Aviators!

Living Legend of Paper Planes Ken Blackburn Ken is a former world record holder for the longest airtime, clocking more than 27 seconds. An aeronautical engineer by profession Ken has been a paper plane enthusiast since a young kid. He is also back to judge the best competitors at the Red Bull Paper Wings World Final 2015.

You are a legend among paper plane enthusiasts and coming back to the Red Bull Paper Wings World Finals 2015 as a judge. What do you expect from this year's competition and what would you like to see?

As in past finals, I expect to see some of the longest paper airplane flights and some of the best paper airplane aerobatics in the world! I hope to see original paper airplanes and creative flying techniques. I am always impressed with the airplanes and creativeness of these champions. What can we expect as far as new designs, new ideas?

This is one of the great things about Red Bull Paper Wings - no matter what I think these pilots will design, I am always surprised. The sky is the limit! You have been a judge before. what makes Red Bull Paper Wings so special?

First I am impressed with the talent. Not only are the judges among the paper airplane elite, the contestants are the real stars of the show - filled with raw talent and energy to lead the next generation of paper airplane pilots. Second I am impressed with the uniting of so many countries and cultures - it gives me great hope for our mutual future. This event brings these people together physically for a few days, but in spirit for a lifetime. What makes Hangar-7 the ideal location for this event?

There is no better place in the world! Hanger-7 is a work of art, and an amazing venue for a paper airplane contest, with the Austrian Alps creating a picturesque background. Now add the best paper airplane pilots in the world. This is certainly a utopia for paper airplane pilots.

How to build a top-class paper airplane ... ... or at least one that doesn’t nosedive after two seconds! ■ T he plane’s centre of gravity will dictate the direction in which it will fly. Therefore, make sure that this is as far forward as possible by folding the paper over at the nose. ■ T he wings should be thin and flat. The question as to whether an airfoil is necessary or not is one that is still debated among experts; the majority tend towards

not having airfoils on the wings. Any bulges or tears in the wings should be avoided. Outside competition conditions you can also use glue to add elements. ■ B y folding the ends of the wings you can influence the direction in which the plane will fly; for an even stronger effect add ailerons (scissors required).

■ T he Y-form is decisive for the airplane’s stability. This term describes the shape of the plane’s wings, which form a Y or a V when viewed from the front. Planes that do not have this form tend to rotate along their longitudinal axis and crash. ■ In many competitions, the paper to be used is defined as being standard A4 with a weight of 80 g/m 2 - the paper used by most offices and photocopiers. While the paper should certainly not be lighter than

80 g/m 2, some experts prefer heavier paper for extreme flights: world record holder, Ken Blackburn, considers 96 g/ m 2 the perfect weight for long flights. ■ I t is strongly recommended that plane builders consult and observe strictly the numerous, high-quality guides available on the Internet on how to build a paper plane (see www.redbullpaperwings.com). When we say observe strictly, then we really mean strictly!

the material In principle oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own imagination knows no limits when it comes to the basic building block of every paper airplane. In addition to the accuracy in construction, finely tuning the throw as well as stability and weight of the paper are crucial.

The official paper that forms the basis for record attempts, is an A4 paper that weighs no more than 100g. World record holder John Collins has made his successful record attempt with an A4 100g paper.

has the same effect. Applied ink is nothing more than a microscopically fine plastic coating, With the patterned paper Collins got more throws, while Joe Ayoob threw shorter than with smooth planes.

This official paper is very smooth and well suited for a long flight. For an afternoon of fun, Collins prefers, however, the slightly smaller paper in letter size or a British variant with a certain structure in the paper. According to Collins that paper is also particularly well suited having passed once through a photocopier. This may sound strange but makes sense when you consider that minute details cam make for the perfect flight.

For a flight that will last for as long as possible, record holder Collinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advice is to use a paper that weighs 85 grams or less. In addition, it should be very smooth and very firm. Arrow-like pilot, which will fly as far as possible, are generally somewhat stronger paper, while gliders are built of thinner.

The heat of the copier makes the paper slightly stiffer than the conventional. Printing

Even for models with many wrinkles thinner paper does not cause unnecessary bulges during folding. Basically, make sure the paper added kinks remain...

The Perfect Testing Ground Mike Mangold Former Red Bull Air Race ace and top-gun pilot Mike Mangold on the fascination of paper planes, aerodynamic similarities, and young talent at Red Bull Paper Wings. Mike, do you think there are similarities between the planes you use in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship and their smaller paper brothers?

Definitely, in fact I would even say that it’s pretty much the same thing! (laughs) The only thing is the paper planes are a bit smaller. Apart from that there are plenty of similarities between the two. You attended a Red Bull Paper Wings national qualiflyer. What did you think of the designs you saw?

I thought they were great; the students did a really good job. I saw some top-class designs and excellent flights. You could tell that the guys had really looked into the aerodynamics side of things.

Maybe! (grins) Red Bull Paper Wings is the perfect testing ground to experiment with flying techniques; paper planes are the perfect instrument to develop knowledge about aerodynamics while having fun at the same time. They allow you to try out lots of different things, such as different ways of folding the paper. I’m pretty sure that a few of the competitors will use their paper plane know-how on real planes in the future. At least 30 metres – providing the plane has a perfect set-up; it should come back down at 11°.

defending distance champion eyes 60â&#x20AC;&#x2030;meters throw Tomas Beck From Red Bull Paper Wings longest distance champion to professional golfer and back, Tomas Beck hopes his work with the driver and putter have helped his swing, and strength as he returns to Salzburg to defend his 2012 title.

You won the title for longest distance in 2012. How have things developed since then?

Since then, a lot has changed for me. I finished high school, I became a professional golfer, and because of my success in Red Bull Paper Wings I was on severalnational TV shows. I was also on more events as a guest, usually related to kids and students. It was so cool to be a Red Bull Paper Wings world finals champion. It is not something everyone can say. How has your training changed after your title win?

What have you tried to work on?â&#x20AC;¨Since I am a professional golfer, sportsman, my daily routine is hard work both in the gym and on the golf course so as to improve. So there was not much time in the last month throwing paper planes. But all I do is for my benefit. Strength, swing, core, stability ... It is now a few months into the championship, so I ask a friend who trains in athletics to help me and I'll throw the spear again and custom paper planesto improve technique and win again.

What do you expect when you return to defend your title at the Red Bull Paper Wings World Final 2015 and how will you go further than the previous time?

I think it's a fabulous atmosphere again. The Official Opening Ceremony, wearing my traditional national dress is not only fun, it is great. This year I'll be the favourite, so I'm going to enjoy it from this perspective and I'll try to throw really far. Another great experience at Hangar-7. Is it the ultimate playground for you?

Yes there is a lot of interesting things there. The atmosphere is just great. Motor sports, planes, helicopters, flying jets. Also the international atmopshere, all the different languages. Everyone speaks English, so I like to exercise and speak English too. And of course the official party on the final day of the competition, it is a way to get acquainted with the others here. So just a great chance to enjoy everything. What would be a perfect competition for you and what is the dream distance you would like to see your sheet of paper fly?

I am looking forward to aerobatics, the best ones are really good. But I'm too.I wish I can throw over 50 meters to get into the super finals. And then I hope to throw 60 metres and win the title again!

You won the title for aerobatics in 2012. How have things developed since then?

Since then I have developed several new models and my goal is to win the competition again. But the Red Bull Paper Wings above all is a great opportunity to meet amazing people and have fun. I cannot wait to go Salzburg! How has your training changed after your title win? What have you tried to work on?

I tried to create a completely new model. Auxiliary materials shall not be considered except for glue and load. I think in Salzburg I will present completely new designs. What do you expect when you return to defend your title and how will you go further than the previous time?

I hope to show a very good show and win again. In aerobatics it is all about performance, interaction with the judges and the spectators. I am ready for it.

Sounds like you will show us another outstanding show at Hangar-7 in Salzburg. Is it the ultimate playground for you?

Red Bull Paper Wings is both fun as well serious competition. I am always very happy to go back to Hangar-7 because it's just such an amazing place. What would be a perfect competition for you in May?

I admit that I hope to repeat the success of three years ago. In order to win you have to show something new and interesting, and that's exactly my plan.

RECORDS ARE THERE TO BE BROKEN Obviously breaking world records is no easy feat with most attempts to set one with a paper airplane carried out under different conditions. But they are after all there to be broken.

Among the Guinness Book of Records for the world’s all-time performances is flight duration with Japanese Takuo Toda succeeding to launch an A5 flyer on 28 March 2009 that stayed in the air for a staggering 24.91 seconds. American Joe Ayoob holds the record for the longest flight, throwing on 26 February 2012 a paper plane contrived by his compatriot John Collins for a distance of 69.14 meters. There are not only records for flight time and length but obviously also for size of a paper plane with a Japanese man named Naito building the smallest airplane in the world using a pair of tweezers and a microscope. Naito’s paper plane had a diameter of only 2.9 millimeters, needing him to place his construction onto a sewing needle.

On the opposite end of the spectrum students at the Technical University of Braunschweig built the world’s largest paper plane on September 28, 2013 with a span of 18.21 m. American Ken Blackburn has been holding the national Origami flyer records flight duration world record with 18.8 seconds from February 17, 1994, using an A4 paper. Blackburn also achieved a flight of 27.6 seconds with a conventional paper airplane in 1988. German Kai Wicke holds his country’s flight distance record from 2006 with 34,82 m, Japan’s Kishiura Takeshige set a national record in 2009 with 37,92 m while Robin Glynn holds the English record with 28.7 m.

World record holder, paper airplane expert and aeronautical engineer joe ayoob You work as aeronautical engineer. What is the scope of your work in the field?

I have been fortunate to be working in aviation research and development for two decades and hope to do so for at least another decade. When I worked for the United States Air Force, it was part of my job to lead a group that carries out research in the field of unmanned aerial ride. These included that we were staying up to date with what the latest innovations concerned specifically for small and slow missiles. What are the links between your work and paper flying?

Whether it is a jet fighter or a paper airplane â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the process is basically the same. It focuses on a problem (eg the record for the longest flight time), generating solutions (the world record design), testing concepts (always let the model fly), making improvements based on the tests (for example, the length of my folds balanced in order to achieve a perfect balance), and then setting to continue the tests. Large projects, such as the F / A-18 (twin-jet multirole fighter) demand thousands of engineers in different continents, but the process is still basically the same as with a paper airplane. What can the aviation professional learn from the construction of paper airplanes?

There is a great story of how Jack Northrop built paper airplanes to test flying wing concepts, which were the precursors of the B-2 bomber. Nowadays we use computers and software to promote concept development. I think that aerospace engineers will rely in the future on paper airplanes as a foundation to gain a basic understanding of what works to build great aircraft and what not. Even experienced engineers like myself see paper airplanes as an excellent way to both

explore new concepts, but also let your own creativity run free. Basically exactly what Red Bull promotes. With the miniaturization of electronics UAVs that can be manufactured nowadays in the size of paper airplanes. I am sure that research still used paper airplanes to find out about new aircraft. What is the future of research, both in terms of aviation and the aviation paper?

Through my work I see that everywhere a lot of research and investigation is done in terms of potency of wings. Much revolves around optimizing wing flexibility in relation to how a plane flies. In addition, the interest in biomimetics has risen sharply, interest in Research into birds and insects. The greatest advances in aerodynamics of paper airplanes you will probably get with knowledge from insects and bats. Takuo Toda and Professor Suzuki believe their designs can help the industry build better aircraft. Do you think today, with everything planned by computers, paper flying can still provide insights?

I do. Paper airplanes can contribute directly to finding specialized solutions for projects and designs for the aerospace industry. Knowledge about paper airplanes is a valuable basis for any aeronautical engineer.

TIPS FOR BETTER FLIGHTS There are endless ways to change a flier to improve it and make it airworthy. Ultimately, it is trial and error until obtaining the optimal model. How to avoid the worst mistakes? In most cases, crashes are caused by three factors: the roles (the paper airplane rotates about its own axis), the pitch (raising the nose of the plane, or lowering it too much) and yaw (the paper airplane is flying in a circle). This can be prevented by improving stability of the aircraft. Professionals speak here of three conditions that must be met, the slope stability, rate stability and crash stability. Light, not too strong upward bending - Do not bend - the back corners (the elevator), up or down, on both sides equally, unless the plane glides to a specific page. Set the rudder, so the rearmost end of the fuselage of an aviator. Bend the fuselage of the plane, slightly to the left or right, this changes the tilt position. In turn, the direction in which the

aircraft is to fly. Attaching a paper clip to the front part of the fuselage. Increase the hull, so fold it deeper between the wings. The larger the body, the more stable the aircraft. At the same time the wing must not be too small. Buckling an elevator. At both ends of the wings bend the pointed small triangles or inglets upward. This increases buoyancy, stability and glide angle. Warning: The bends must be made strictly parallel to the hull. In addition, the wingshould be large enough. You can also add a fin in the middle of your flyer by folding there. Bend the tab to the right, and your flyer will make this movement during the flight, or turn left when you bend the tab to the left. Fins can be folded at an air

There are plenty of words to describe Andy Chipling: visionary, expert, founder.
