Romans 1:16-17 16

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith.“ [Hab. 2:4]

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it22

the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

Catechism of the Catholic Church (1993) “Absolution takes away sin, but it does not remedy all the disorders sin has caused. Raised up from sin, the sinner must still recover his full spiritual health by doing something more to make amends for the sin: he must 'make satisfaction for' or 'expiate' his sins.

Thirty-nine Articles of Religion (1563)

Article XI: Of the Justification of Man We are accounted righteous before God, only for the merit of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ by Faith, and not for our own works or deserving.

Romans 3:25-26 25

whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26

It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake He made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Romans 3:27-31 27

Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since God is one. He will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

Romans 3:20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

Romans 4:6 just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works

Romans 9:30-32 30

Gentiles . . . have attained . . . a righteousness that is by faith; 31

but Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. 32

Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works.

“The man who has faith is the man who is no longer looking at himself, and no longer looking to himself. He no longer looks at anything he once was. He does not look at what he is now. He does not look at what he hopes to be . . . He looks entirely to the Lord Jesus Christ and his finished work, and he rests on that alone.” ― Martin Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981)

So when the devil throws your sins in your face and declares that you deserve death and hell, tell him this: "I admit that I deserve death and hell, what of it? For I know One who suffered and made satisfaction on my behalf. His name is Jesus Christ, Son of God, and where He is there I shall be also! ― Martin Luther
