A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Corrado Paina ICCO Executive Director

I am a privileged person. I work with highly skilled individuals in an organization that knows how to talk to business and has a great deal of respect for the time and needs of entrepreneurs. My dream was always to create a smart and efficient organization that could constructively represent its mandate: to be the primary provider of effective commercial support for trade and business relations between Canada and Italy. The ICCO is an organization where we talk about Italy and Canada as well as Canada and Europe. In the last few years our budget and membership has increased, as has the participation of young people. We’ve improved the quality of our events and attendance has grown. We work with governments, companies and institutions. In few words this is the future of the ICCO: to work in Europe, to work on innovation and to expand business and investments in Italy and in Canada. Tonight’s seven winners embody Canadian know-how. They are the many faces of this great country. There is no past, present and future. There is a harmonious combination of everything. Different styles, different experiences, different fields of work and all of them have one common trait: they are leaders. I have said that I am a privileged person. Well, I am not just privileged – I am lucky. I work with a Board composed of incredibly visionary and capable leaders from Italy and Canada. One of them (Enrico De Pasquale) is the person who has drafted the ICCO’s mandate:

“To be the primary provider of effective commercial support for trade and business relations between Canada and Italy”. A very simple, pragmatic, no frills mandate. This is what we are, what we want to be and what we will be. With this staff, with this Board, my job becomes quite easy. I want to thank Nick Di Donato and the Liberty Entertainment Group for their stellar organization, the members of the G. It (Gruppo Italia) for the work they are doing in helping Italian professionals and businesspeople come to Canada, the CIBPA for sitting at the table with the ICCO and planning new, joint activities, for example, our co-sponsored golf tournament, the Sistema Italia, the Ambassador of Italy in Canada Claudio Taffuri and the Consul General of Italy in Toronto Eugenio Sgrò, and finally my Co-Presidents Tony Altomare and Pat Pelliccione. Two tireless volunteers who are making the ICCO bigger and better. There are so many more people to thank – those who are responsible for the growth of the Chamber. LOOKING AT THE PAST WITH EYES ON THE FUTURE ICCO Co-Presidents, Tony Altomare and Pat Pelliccione share their vision for the Chamber If the story of Italian emigration to Canada has been often told, it is because it is the textbook example of how a foreign culture can successfully navigate the Canadian multicultural dream. From the early 1950s to the mid 1960s Canada was absorbing 20 to 30 thousand Italians every Pat Pelliccione year while the country was going Tony Altomare through its own “Expo 67” coming of age. By the early 60s the explosive growth of the community made expanding trade relationships between Italy and Canada desirable, so in 1961 the Italian Consul General, Francesco de Rege, gathered together a few local businessmen and founded the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Toronto. That it quickly became a success is a testament to the tenacity of the early founders who had clear goals, the benefit of a strong social network, and the aid ofa small number of individuals that guided the Chamber over many years. By 1964, only three years after its inception, the Chamber had become a strong voice in trade relations between Italy and Canada. That year the president, Lanfranco Amato, was able to boast a successful trade mission to Italy with prominent Canadian business figures led by the Toronto Mayor Philip Givens. There was an exchange with the Chamber of Commerce of Rome, a meeting with His Holiness Pope Paul VI, and a meeting with the Mayor of Milan to propose the city twinning of Milan and Toronto. Back in Canada, Antonio Valeri, the new managing director of the Chamber was busy working on a new magazine, Italy Canada Trade, a quarterly journal that became an essential communication tool of the Chamber for over 30 years. The goals and leadership of the Chamber have been remarkably consistent since its inception. Valeri remained managing director until 1979 and then stayed on as President until 1990. Ron Farano, one of

the founders, contributed massively to the growth of the Chamber, serving as President in the early years, as managing director from 1979 to 1990, and as Chairman and respected elder statesman until his death in 2010. Since its early years the Chamber has shown a continuity of purpose that Antonio Valeri would recognize if he was still around despite changing market conditions. In 2000 Corrado Paina was hired as deputy director of the Chamber and he created Partners Magazine, a glossy update to the venerable Italy Canada Trade. Partners featured in-depth articles on current trade practices, interviews with entrepreneurs, artists, designers, and politicians from Canada, such as former Prime Minister Harper. In 2003 Paina was also instrumental in fulfilling the old dream of twinning the cities of Milan and Toronto. In 2006 Paina became the Executive Director of the Chamber and continued to expand Chamber networking opportunities by creating the Greater Toronto Business Alliance, which brought together Chambers of Commerce from the Chinese, Portuguese, Indian and Italian business communities. In 2010 the Chamber changed its name to the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Ontario to better reflect its enlarged mandate beyond the borders of Toronto. These initiatives are grounded in an awareness that globalization has transformed 21st century business. Since the creation of the European Union, trade with Italy has become more important than ever. Italy is now a gateway to the EU, making the ICCO’s ability to build networks, lobby governments, and guide trade delegations, an essential activity and a vital continuation of its original mandate. As the ICCO Air Canada Business Excellence Awards (BEA) get underway, the ICCO Co-Presidents Tony Altomare and Pat Pelliccione look back at a year full of accomplishments and share their commitment to a prosperous future. “The ICCO is a non-profit local business organization whose main objective is to promote business development and investment between Canadian and Italian companies,” states Altomare, Founder and President of Inter-Transport Ltd, an international freight forwarding company that provides air freight, sea freight, trucking, warehousing and distribution services throughout the world. “Going forward, the ICCO will become the most vital connection between Canadian and Italian businesses and government.” This mandate has gained strength in recent years, according to Pat Pelliccione, President of Jan K. Overweel Limited, a national company that produces and represents brand name food products with offices and distribution centres throughout Canada. Pelliccione points out that the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which was implemented in 2017, “has liberalized ways that companies can invest in Canada.” He notes that Canada’s fishing, farming and food industries are reaping the benefits in Italy, while Italian construction, engineering and green energy sectors are finding a foothold in the Canadian marketplace. Collaboration between Canada and Italy is also expanding in the fields of science, technology and innovation. Through it all, the ICCO is an integral mechanism to foster this growth. “The ICCO is ideally positioned to facilitate this investment through our trade desk and especially through our staff’s expertise and knowledge,” expresses Altomare.“We also match companies to potential partners overseas and organize and lead commercial trade missions.” “The ICCO has developed a relationship with Canada’s Ambassador to Italy and have set up satellite offices in Italy (in Udine, Milan and Verona),” adds Pelliccione. “We have people on the ground in these cities who act as conduits for Canadian companies that want to start investing in Italy.”

But creating synergies on a more local, community-based level is just as important to the ICCO and its Co-Presidents. With that in mind, the organization hosts the annual Pentola D’Oro (a celebration of outstanding work in the Italian culinary and beverage industry in Ontario), as well as the BEA, which recognizes Italian-Canadian individuals and companies who have contributed to Canadian business. Going hand-in-hand with recognizing established business leaders is the goal of engaging the next generation. Altomare and Pelliccione agree that the ICCO’s networking events are valuable tools for up-and-comers. “The networking events are a platform for young professionals to drive more business for their firms and provide a channel for commerce not only in Italy but into Europe as well,” says Pelliccione. “They also offer young Italian-Canadians the ability to tap into their heritage and culture.” These initiatives have resulted in an increase of younger members and the Co-Presidents are optimistic about continuing that trend in the future. “We welcomed several young entrepreneurs to our board who have brought forward-thinking ideas, such as Daniela Carcasole, a Director and Chair of the Business Development Committee,” states Altomare. “She has helped develop the Aperitivo networking series that has attracted many young business people. Our most recent edition was Aperitivo in Maschera, which took place in March. Of the more than 400 people who attended I estimated that about 40% were between the ages of 18-35.” These accomplishments are rewarding for Altomare and Pelliccione, who say they’re proud and honoured to have served as Co-Presidents and are quick to point out that these accomplishments are the result of hard work and dedication exhibited by everyone involved with the ICCO – from the members of the Board to Executive Director, Corrado Paina. As Altomare explains, “Corrado demonstrates his love for the ICCO day in and day out through his incredible vision, unstoppable drive and genuine passion.” By Rita Simonetta

CHIARA ROSTAGNO Architect and PhD specialized in the Restoration of Monuments

Chiara Rostagno is an Architect and a PhD specialized in the Restoration of Monuments who spearheaded a preservation project of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” between 2016 and 2018. She is the Former Director of Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano. As of 2010 she has worked as an Architect at MiBAC (the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities) and is an Adjunct Professor at the Politecnico of Milan, where she has taught Conservation of Cultural Heritage and Museology since 1998. For the current academic year Rostagno teaches the Landscape as Heritage course. In 2015 she became the Coordinator of a multidisciplinary research group for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage to study the effects of climate change. The group is composed of resources from Politecnico of Milan, Bocconi University, the University of Milano-Bicocca, the University of Salerno, the University of Bologna, the University of Ljubljana and The Jožef Stefan Institute (Ljubljana) and Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR). Rostagno is currently applying the activities of the CNR to a research program called “Leonardo” (2019-2023). She is the author of several books and papers in the field of Conservation and History of Cultural Heritage.

There is a painting in the refectory of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan that for more than five centuries has captured people’s attention: Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” (1494-1498). According to UNESCO, it “is undisputedly one of the world’s masterpieces of painting. Its unique value, which over the centuries has had immense influence in the field of figurative art, is inseparable from the architectural complex in which it was created. ‘The Last Supper’ is a timeless and unique artistic achievement of Outstanding Universal Value.” As Goethe wrote, first of all “transfer yourself into this place, and picture to your mind the decorous and undisturbed calm, which reigns in such a monkish refectory; then you will admire the artist who knew how to inspire into his work a powerful emotion and active life [...]. But, before we proceed any further, let us analyze one great expedient, whereby Leonardo chiefly enlivened his picture: it is the motion of the hands. This resource was obvious to an Italian. In this nation, the whole body is animated, every member, every limb participates in any expression of feeling, of passion, and even of thought.”

The “motion of the soul,” the perspectival construction of the pictorial space (that was conceived to emphasize the Drama and the figure of Christ), the exquisite drawing, the “sfumature” (the nuances of colour), the “chiaroscuro”: “The Last Supper” is a kind of Manifesto of da Vinci’s ideas of Art and of his approach to knowledge. But the fragility and vulnerability of the experimental technique adopted by da Vinci (dry tempera instead of the traditional fresco technique that is durable), became apparent in 1517, when historical documents attested that “the painting is beginning to ruin!” Da Vinci’s painting is considered a crucial example of art from the first half of the 16th century, but two opposing viewpoints began to emerge: an appreciation of its beauty and importance, and at the same time, a fear that it could be lost. Since the Renaissance masterpiece is quite fragile and vulnerable, it has been repeatedly restored over the centuries in desperate attempts to preserve it.

This method is an example of a new approach to combat environmental contaminants in order to protect cultural heritage (the first HVAC system came into operation in 1995). The Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano is one of the most important cultural sites in Italy and beyond its goal of increasing admission (there were 1320 visitors each day before the preservation project and today there are 1428 visitors every 15 minutes) it has a fundamental role to guarantee appropriate conditions of conservation in the refectory. The restoration project, which initiated in 2017 and was completed in 2018, was under the direction of Chiara Rostagno. The preventive preservation method is nowadays the most efficient and reliable technique employed to restore artwork.

After the last great restoration project (made between 1978 and 1999 by Pinin Brambilla Barcilon on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities), it has now been preserved using an innovative method: an air-filtration system to filter in cool, clean air that will prevent damage from the humidity inside the convent. According to a research article published in Environmental Science & Technology, “There is mounting evidence correlating indoor air pollution, biological contamination, mass tourism, and variability in microclimate conditions with material deterioration” of fine art works. Rudolph P. Bratty

The son of a carpenter who came to Canada from Friuli, Italy, Rudolph P. Bratty began building houses at 17, using the proceeds from those early ventures to finance a law degree from Osgoode Hall at his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s behest. After being called to the bar, he soon established himself as a pre-eminent legal mind in areas of real estate, land development, planning and municipal law. As his law practice grew, The Remington Group, where Mr. Bratty continues to serve as Chairman and CEO, likewise continued to flourish, expanding from home construction into commercial and residential high-rise construction, property management and other related enterprises. Mr. Bratty, who works closely with his brother, Jerry, was joined in the family business by sons Matthew, Mark, Christopher and Michael.

For his ardent support of Italian-Canadian charities, Mr. Bratty was among the first to receive a star on the Torontoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Italian Walk of Fame. Some of his many other accolades include the Human Relations Award by the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, the Humanitarian Award by the Italian Canadian Benevolent Corporation, Arbor Award from the University of Toronto for his outstanding voluntary service, CIBPA Business Excellence Award, the Government of Canada Award for Business Excellence, and both the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and Golden Jubilee Medal. In April 2012, Mr. Bratty was recognized with a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by the Building, Industry and Land Development Association. He received an Honourary Doctor of Laws from York University in October 2017.

A dedicated supporter of countless charities, foundations and organizations, and a generous champion of Canadian art and culture, Mr. Bratty has served as director on the boards of many public corporations and hospital boards, supported several educational institutions, cultural groups and associations. Clara Angotti has been a technology entrepreneur for most her professional career. From 1993 to 2000 she was the co-founder and EVP of Sales/Marketing for Sage Information Consultants, a technology consulting firm that specialized in developing electronic banking and brokerage software. Clara was instrumental in orchestrating the sale of Sage to a NASDAQ listed company in June 2000.

In 2012, she was awarded the RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Award, which is given to an individual who has launched one or more successful companies, has a proven track record of growth and profitability, and who is a role model to other entrepreneurs. Each year, Clara participates in a mentorship program to provide support and career guidance to women.

Her next venture, founded in February 2002, was M Systems Group (M). M provided an outsourced offering for the management of email platforms to large enterprises. This business grew rapidly and was purchased by Bell Canada in July 2006.

In September 2018, Clara joined the Board of Trustees for The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). In 2011, Clara and her husband established a foundation to provide pediatric care to children of the Kapi’olani Medical Center in Hawaii. Clara is also passionate about the arts; she is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and she and her husband are both founding members of the arts festival, Luminato & major donors to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

In 2008 Clara co-founded Next Pathway, a technology consulting and engineering firm specializing in Platform Modernization. In her role as President, Clara executes the firm’s strategy from an operational perspective. Among her accomplishments, Clara was recognized as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women in 2011 and 2018.

Clara received her Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto in 1988.

As the sole owner and visionary behind Gusto 54, Janet stands out as a woman and entrepreneur in the restaurant industry. She is the driving force and soul behind Gusto 54, which in 2019 was recognized as a Deloitte Best Managed Company. In 1996, she opened Trattoria Nervosa in Toronto’s Yorkville area. In 2012, Gusto 101 launched in King West; 2014 brought PAI Northern Thai Kitchen. In 2015, Gusto 54’s Catering and Commissary Kitchen were added to the growing roster. 2017 was a year of growth and saw the expansion of the Gusto family with concepts Kiin, Same Same, Chubby’s Jamaican Kitchen and Los Angelesbased restaurant, Felix, which was lauded as Esquire’s “#1 Best New Restaurant in America”, LA Weekly’s “Best Restaurants in LA”, and shortlisted as a finalist for the James Beard “Best New Restaurant 2018” award. In 2019, Gusto 54 branches out with the launch of a much-anticipated opening of its newest King East outpost, Gusto 501 as well as Gusto Green in Los Angeles’ Jewelry District.

An adventurous traveller, Janet has a unique pulse on the world of restaurants and food. Today she marries that passion with her entrepreneurial spirit by curating innovative and delicious dining experiences on a global scale. In 2017, Janet was recognized as Foodservice & Hospitality’s Pinnacle Award winner for “Independent Restaurateur of the Year” and, among thousands of candidates across the country, was selected by the RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards as the recipient of the “TEC Canada Award for Excellence in Entrepreneurship”. In addition to these accolades, she also happens to be the first woman in Canada to become an AVPN certified Pizzaiola and is featured as a Resident Judge in Top Chef Canada’s AllStars Season 5, as well as Top Chef Canada Season 6 & 7.

Armando Pirola Fumanelli Proprietor & CEO, Cantine Marchesi Fumanelli

The Marchesi Fumanelli family have been winemakers in Italyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Valpolicella region since 1470. The family villa was built by the Marquis Fumanelli in the 17th century and still features architectural fragments and inscriptions from a Roman temple dedicated to the Goddess Flora. After he completed his studies, Armando Pirola Fumanelli began a diplomatic career and worked in Somalia, Mozambique and various Middle East countries. He had eventually decided to return to the Italian soil and his beloved Valpolicella hills in order to follow his passion for the wine industry and commercialize the wines of the Squarano estate to international markets.

For the past year he has been coordinating with the Italian Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Defence in order to facilitate a political and technical interchange for the production of pharmaceutical cannabis as the CEO of Aphria Italy. Armando is a collector of classic cars and frequently participates at the historic Mille Miglia (1000 Miles) vintage car race in Tuscany. Besides cars, he is a passionate sportsman with a particular affinity for polo and sailing. He is a connoisseur of international wines and a collector of antiques and fine arts. Armando often loans out his collection pieces to international art exhibitions.

The winery at Squarano was completely modernized in 1999 and has been in constant expansion ever since. After almost 20 years of frequent travel to Toronto and Montreal, Armando feels at home in Canada and he counts many close friends here.

Music Director, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir

The brilliant violinist Elisa Citterio joined Tafelmusik as Music Director in 2017. She moved to Toronto from her native Italy, where she divided her artistic life between orchestral work and an intense schedule as a chamber musician. She has recorded and toured, often as leader, with such ensembles as Dolce & Tempesta, Europa Galante, Accademia Bizantina, Accordone, Zefiro, la Venexiana, La Risonanza, Ensemble 415, Concerto Italiano, Orquestra del Montsalvat, Il Giardino Armonico, and Orchestra Academia 1750. From 2004 she was a member of the Orchestra del Teatro della Scala di Milano.

Her discography includes more than 35 recordings with Accademia I Filarmonici (Vivaldi), Europa Galante (Vivaldi and Bach), Zefiro (Handel), Accordone (Storie di Napoli), Brixia Musicalis (Vivaldi Four Seasons), Accademia Bizantina (Handel and Corelli), Il Giardino Armonico (Handel and Haydn), La Venexiana (Monteverdi), Joachim Quartet (Schuster), Helianthus Ensemble (C.P.E. Bach trios), and a number of opera recordings with the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro alla Scala under such conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, Edward Gardner, Daniele Gatti, Daniel Harding, Lorin Maazel, and Riccardo Muti.

Elisa comes from a musical family, including her composer mother and brother. She graduated with highest honours in violin and viola from L. Marenzio Conservatory in her hometown of Brescia. Post-graduate work included baroque violin studies with Enrico Onofri, Luigi Mangiocavallo, and Chiara Banchini.
