Rebuilt Dream Shelter

After the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986, local residents fled their homes due to fear of radiation, and the surrounding villages became ghost towns. Despite the lingering risks, some people choose to ignore the warnings and return to live in the restricted area.

people choose to live in crumbling houses on the fringes of the quarantine. But this building provides people with a safe shelter to purify radiation and live a happy life.

[ Longing for the outside world ]

Living in a place with radiation for a long time, people suffer from different degrees of diseases. The biggest problem is that compared with their peers, their resistance is very low. Therefore, this area is constructed of denser materials to provide people with a place to live away from radiation.

[ Demand for food ]

At Chernobyl, some of the radioactive cesium-137 levels could have been dangerous. Cesium particles are absorbed by grass roots, and vegetables contaminated with radiation may threaten human health. Therefore, this area uses filtered water and soil to grow radiation-free vegetables and fruits.

[ Demand for purification ]

The interior of Zeolith natural ore is not only full of tiny pores and channels more complex than a honeycomb; it also has a huge surface area, the lowest factory uses Zeolith to purify water and soil containing radiation.

In order to avoid depression caused by people staying in a confined space for a long time, the long corridor of hope provides a channel for people to observe the outside world.

[ Demand for storage ]

We use countless tanks to store purified water and soil to provide protection for people's lives

[ Demand for collection ] also joined the team to purify the city! am a pilot, and I am responsible for throwing white and transparent Zeolith from Icelandic basalt almond holes to the base every day, contributing to the purification of the city. I really hope to see a clean and tidy home without radiation as soon as possible.

Large and small underground pits collect water, air, and soil that need to be purified.

The pit at the bottom collects deposited highly radioactive air and water.

Numerous pipes transport highly radiated air to factories.

First, the high-radiation material is processed for the first time to purify, and then Zeolith are added later.

I'm boiling Zeolith!

A piece of white transparent crystal native to Icelandic basalt almond hole was blowpipe analyzed and heated to produce bubble boiling phenomenon, thus producing Zeolith to neutralize nuclear radiation.

Finally, the purified air and water are transported to people's living places through pipelines later.

In a large factory, there will be more than ten people working at the same time, while in a small factory, everyone has their own workbench. The temporary operating platform is only for people to stay temporarily during maintenance.

The outside city is slowly getting better.

Transporting these crystals is really tiring!

Most of the underground is deposited with highly radioactive soil and wate.

Shallow pits collect highly radiated air.

Transmitting...

The wider pit collects some of the highly radioactive water, which is then circulated through the machine to keep it flowing.

Exhaust

The entire collection system is almost done underground, away from people's living places to the greatest extent.

Radiation-free Homesick

Many locations in Chernobyl are still dangerous, with loud sirens from radiation counters when approached, and here provides shelter for people from principle radiation.

This

Residential areas provide people with safe and radiation-free places.

Place of residence

The walls are all made of high-density materials, which can withstand a considerable part of nuclear radiation

Planting area

Most of them use soilless cultivation, using fresh and radiation-free air and water to cultivate plants.

Breeding area

It is also very necessary to ensure that the livestock that people eat on a daily basis is a safe and radiationfree source.

The supply area provides guarantee for people's life.

These plants grow better!

The water is so clear!

My home is really comfortable.

After the purification is completed, we can return to our original home.

I really want to see the outside world.

The author of "Voices from Chernobyl" wrote "I don't know if the world today is repeating history, but there are some things we must not forget, we should be witnesses to history, not passers-by.

Therefore, how to face up to the past, how to relieve pain, and how to face the future are just a few questions that linger in my mind during the entire architectural design process.

Place Of Suffering

"The story behind the site is told through four themes: navigation, earthquake, war and time."reu), Lisbon, Portugal

Project Description

The design of this project is a heritage park, mainly in the form of a boardwalk combined with nodes, from the traffic loop to the heritage site, with the technique of spatial narrative, deducing the historical development from ancient times to the present.

Since it is a site park design, the historical development of the site is a core consideration. Lisbon’s history can be roughly divided into four periods. The first period was marked by a desire for trade interests, land expansion, and natural exploration. People began to sail out to the sea, for honor and money, while suffering from shipwreck, the missing, the unknown and confusion at the same time. In the second period, Lisbon was hit by a massive earthquake, which, along with subsequent fires and tsunamis, which killed many people and destroyed half of its existing buildings. In the third period, the First French Empire founded by Napoleon, started a war with Portugal, leading to the fall of the Portuguese Dynasty and enormous casualties. The fourth period was peaceful, but the castle was left idle with no one to repair under natural weathering. The castle accompanied the people of Lisbon through so much suffering, and resulted in today's appearance.

In terms of design, the west side of the site is the Atlantic Ocean, the east side is near the natural lawn, and there are the road and housing in between. In terms of planning, the starting point, namely the entrance square, is designed at the intersection with the ring road for vehicle parking and crowd evacuation. Then the whole space is arranged in time sequence , namely navigation, earthquake, war and time.

Sailing

15th to 17th century period

At that time, navigators all set out from Lisbon and entered the Atlantic Ocean.

Cross the English Channel to the North Sea; Cross the Cape of Good Hope to plunder Africa. The navigators have experienced countless ups and downs along the way, shipwrecks, storms, and longing for leaving home. They are accompanied by suffering all the way.

Earthquake

18th century

The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 killed about 100,000 people. After the earthquake, the accompanying fires and huge tsunami destroyed almost the entire Lisbon. The fire and tsunami that followed after the earthquake burned Lisbon even more. At the same time, it also caused a serious decline in Portugal's national strength, and the colonial empire has since declined.

Four Themes

Based on past records

War

In the 19th century

In 1804, the First French Empire led by Napoleon was established.

Soon after he became emperor, Napoleon focused his attention on the Iberian Peninsula. Then the Peninsular War began. Begins Napoleon's conquest of Portugal, and also begins Portugal's 19th century decline.

TIME

From time immemorial

Time is always passing. From the birth of the castle to the erosion of the castle. Just like from our infancy to old age. All things will be destroyed by time.

Milreu Fortress is a historical landmark, located on a cliff on the Atlantic coast of Portugal. During the war, the fortress was vital to the city's defense due to its good views, and now, the beautiful scenery makes it a good viewing platform. The remains of a fortress, sheer cliffs and the vast Atlantic Ocean are prominent features in this setting.

The fortress of Milreu was built in the 17th century to guard the city of Riberia de Ilhas as part of the Portuguese Atlantic Defense Line. However, the well-built military fort was not destroyed by the war but was badly damaged in the great earthquake of 1755, and was abandoned in 1806. Dramatically, 25 years later, due to the needs of the war, the fort was restored and reactivated, until 1853, when the fort of Milreu was decommissioned again and gradually collapsed over the years.

In the age of discovery, ocean voyages meant adventure. People continue to sail away with the unknown, curiosity, infinite longing for their hometown and longing for wealth.

Daylight change

Morning Afternoon Night

As people keep moving away from the land, the yearning for their hometown deepens, the danger index on the sea surface keeps rising, and people fear the unknown more and more. In the Nautical Hall, as the sun changes throughout the day, the ground floor space gets less and less sunlight, and the space keeps getting darker.

The castle has experienced earthquakes, tsunamis and many wars, but it is still intact, but in the end it became incomplete due to the weathering of time. Just like us, we have escaped countless times, but we cannot resist time.

Intact Damp Growing Wear and tear Damaged

The ancient castle was built because of the war, but it was repeatedly destroyed by the war. Just like this turbulent world, we went around but couldn't get out of the shadow of the war.

03 Soil SOS

"I think we've reached a point where we have to pay more attention to soils. Because only healthy soil produces healthy food."

location:Huludao, Liaoning Province, China

Project Description

Among the countries with data available, it is estimated that about 80,000 sites in Australia have soil pollution; China lists 16% of its soil and 19% of its agricultural soil as contaminated, which are polluted to varying degrees by heavy metals, including chromium, nickel, arsenic contamination. Nonetheless, they are still considered as arable lands and are used to produce food for human consumption. In addition, there are approximately 3 million potentially contaminated sites in the European Economic Area and the Western Balkans; 1,300 sites in the United States are included in the country’s Super Fund list of national key pollution hotspots.

Heavy metals cannot be biodegraded, on the contrary, they can be increased by hundreds of times by the biomagnification effect in the food chain, and eventually enter the human body. Heavy metals can stay in the human body after interacting with proteins and enzymes in the human body, and may also accumulate in certain human organs, causing chronic poisoning. Therefore, this design tries to use devices to alert people with the importance of protecting and loving the soil.

Heavy metal hazards

Lead exposure can cause anemia, hypertension, renal impairment, immunotoxicity, and reproductive organ toxicity. The neurological and behavioral effects of lead are irreversible.

Patients with cadmium poisoning may also experience symptoms such as emphysema, decreased respiratory function, and anemia.

Inorganic salts of mercury are corrosive to the skin, eyes, and gastrointestinal tract, and can cause nephrotoxicity if ingested.

Huludao Pollution Development Historylocated

Since 1945, more than 1 million Japanese expatriates have been repatriated to China via Huludao.

Nickel deficiency can cause disorders such as hepatic lipid and phospholipid metabolism abnormalities.

In addition to arsenic causing skin cancer, longterm exposure to arsenic may also cause bladder cancer.

In 2006, the number of factories in Huludao gradually increased, causing some damage to the local environment.

Chemical companies in Huludao exceeded the emission standards, causing the air to be pungent and smell disturbing to the residents.

The environment in Huludao is getting worse and worse, and the number of cancer deaths in the same village is increasing .

In 1930, Zhang Xueliang built Huludao Port, which was a major event in the country since the founding of the Republic of China.

Huludao's water bodies are seriously polluted due to domestic sewage overflows and sewage discharges from chemical companies.

The soil in Huludao has gradually become excessive in heavy metals, and the acidification of the land has also increased the amount of metal precipitation.

A 60-day greenhouse pot experiment was used to study the tolerance and accumulation effect of castor to heavy metal Cd pollution in soil. The Cd accumulation of castor was mainly concentrated in the roots, and the accumulation concentration was root>stem>leaves, which may be related to the strong root system of castor.

Heavy metals in the soil exceed the standard. Planting castor beans to purify the soil

About 87% of heavy metals remain in farmland soil every year. Soil heavy metals seriously exceeded the standard. The metal stick warning light turns red.

Castor has good absorption and accumulation characteristics for soil heavy metals, and many studies have also shown that castor has great potential for soil restoration.

The soil is gradually being repaired. Soil restoration, more farmland.

As the number of castor plantings increases and the planting time increases, the acidity of the soil improves and the content of heavy metals decreases.

The plants and crops in the farmland became more and more luxuriant, the soil condition became better, and the metal sticks became colorless.

Equipment required for experiment

The acidified soil colloidal particles are closely arranged, the hydrogen ions are too much, and the activity of heavy metal elements is strong.

Regional Plant Species

First Month: Placement

The heavy metals in the soil are seriously exceeding the standard, the trees are withered, and the red light of the device is flashing, which represents a major threat to the environment and human body.

Sixth Month: Planting

Large-scale planting of castor can absorb heavy metals in the soil and improve the soil environment. At this time, the metal rod is still in red, which makes people keep vigilant all the time.

First Year: Recovery

At this time, the soil condition has improved slightly, and some new plants have sprouted green shoots, and the castor has covered the positive area. At this time, the red color of the metal rod becomes lighter.

Seventh Year: Sprout

There are still a few dead trees, But many trees have begun to sprout and grow, the heavy metal content in the soil has improved significantly, and people have begun to plant a small amount of crops.

Fifteenth year: Growth

The overall soil condition has returned to normal, the metal rods have become colorless, the dead trees have been disposed of and crops have been planted in large quantities.

Twenty year: A New Look

At this time, there is no need for the warning of metal rods, and the entire land has been covered by dense crops.

By scanning the code, we can check the condition of the soil on the home page of the APP, so as to choose whether to plant our own casters.

After knowing the soil information, we can use the energy we usually accumulate to plant castor beans and contribute to the purification of the soil.

In this interface, we can choose the plants we want to grow according to our own energy.

The page will have detailed information about the plants you want to know for your reference.

We can enter the monitoring interface through the APP, and check the plants we plant anytime, anywhere.

Mr. Li and his wife are both teachers of the Soil Fertility and Environment Team of the School of Resources and Environment of Huazhong Agricultural University. They have always been committed to the research of phytoremediation of heavy metal polluted soil

Niu Niu is a child in the countryside of Huludao. Huludao suffered from industrial pollution since he was a child, and his resistance was low. Since Huludao began to specify measures to improve the soil, he and his mother often came to scan the QR code to check the soil conditions, and actively planted castor.

Mr. Liu is a farmer. In the past, the soil condition was so bad that he hadn't cultivated it all year round and had no income. The soil has recovered over the years, and farmers have started planting again.

Nanluoguxiang Hutong Reconstruction

"Nanluoguxiang in Beijing is an extremely popular “hutong” landscape among tourists. It is an ancient alley more than 700 meters long. The peak tourist numbers can reach 100,000 people in a day. This ancient neighborhood in Beijing is under great risk of destruction by excessive tourism. Transformation is imperative, and business takes the hit, but how to change it?" location:Nanluoguxiang, Beijing, China individual project

Nanluoguxiang is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Beijing. It is the largest, highest-grade, and most resource-rich chessboard-style traditional residential area in my country that fully preserves the hutong courtyard style of the Yuan Dynasty. It is also the street with the traditional Beijing style. Therefore, many tourists come here to visit and enjoy themselves every day.

To manage its tourist inflow overload, Nanluoguxiang even took the initiative to cancel the title of 3A scenic spot. However, on both sides of the hutong, there are still many residents who are unable to live normally due to the endless stream of tourists. Such excessive commercialization makes the residential area too crowded and the basic living needs cannot be met. Therefore, this project tries to renovate in a small space to provide residents with more living and entertainment options.

The transformed community has many places for us to grow vegetables spontaneously.

Great! There is a place to dry clothes on the corner of the street, our clothes and quilts can be exposed to the sun.

Chat Play Music

There are small gardens at the end of the alley and on the roof, where we can talk freely.

There is a small playground near the children's school. It is very convenient to come and play after school.

The remodeled community has more stands, and our band has a place to perform.

The people in this alley live happily, let me take pictures of them!

This design redefines the narrow space in the old city, reuses every street corner, street, and small square, and innovates and transforms them. It designs their own places for children, teenagers, and the elderly, hoping to be able to create a space in a small environment. Create as many different life experiences as possible.

There are so many children here! There are many recreational facilities!

We all come here after get off work to pick our own vegetables.

As a well-known commercial district, we often ignore the aborigines of this street. In the final analysis, our ideal street is used for residents to live, not for others to watch. How to transform a city, in the final analysis, should be how to create a more comfortable life.

There are often band performances in this stand, which is very lively.
