New Threads Fashion designer Rina Latif’s ridiculously gorgeous collection for the fashion show “Threads of Heritage” in Bangkok was a pure crowd pleaser It all started when Bangladesh’s ambassador in Thailand H.E Saida Muna Tasneem approached her with the idea of showcasing Bangladesh’s textile heritage; a dialogue between the two countries. “I immediately jumped on board,” Rina exclaimed. Without a second thought she entailed into the idea of actualising such a refreshing and exciting concept. “Also, since Bangladesh and Thailand share a common textile in the form of woven silk, I was curious to explore it further,” She elaborated with repletion. Rina believes that the dialogue will be a fruitful one because a conversation always makes more sense and happens to be more constructive when the two parties share something in common. “The feedback from the show was fantastic,” Rina says in a joyous voice. The show not only managed to

generate a buzz but also represented Bangladesh and its culture in an avatar that was unknown to the Thai crowd. “We gave it our all and put out our best show,” she said in excitement continuing to say, “and consequently, the show hit a home run. I'm proud that I was able to do what I set out to do.” “It's sad when age old techniques face the threat of a slow demise in the face of progress, however, it is inevitable,” Rina asserts. She further contends that silk will always be in demand because it is part of our culture and that it is our duty to ensure that we do not let it die. She believes that we have certain responsibilities towards our weavers and that we integrate them with the changing times. Our artisans and craftspeople ought to be given high priority and the framework should definitely be more formal in terms

of how their rights are being protected. And also, that we need to show a lot more respect for our craftspeople and appreciate their artworks. “As a nation, we should really start taking pride in who we are. We should start evolving our own sense of style instead of blindly following the culture and trends of our neighbouring countries,” Rina emphasises. “There really is nothing more chic than our hand woven pure fabrics such a cotton, khadi and silk,” says the designer. She believes that in order to promote unique Bangladeshi fashion, we need to establish and enforce copyright and intellectual laws if we are to strengthen our fashion industry. “When there are counterfeits available so readily, a sustainable industry can never develop,” she ends on that note.

Huawei P9 making sense with Leica camera

Enviably Engineered With the emergence of digital camera technology and high-end smartphones, photography has become a part and parcel of modern lifestyle. When it comes to choosing a smartphone camera, there’s an abudance of options in the market. But there is an old saying that the best camera you have is the one you have on you. Chinese technology giant Huawei’s latest flagship device P9 is a major leap in the future of smartphone photography. Together with iconic camera manufacturer Leica Camera AG, Huawei has set a new landmark in the world of photography incorporating Leica’s precision and craft in photography with its top-notch smartphone technology. The Huawei P9 is a piece of art that traces back to over 100 years when Leica emerged in the world of photography to change it forever. With the launch of the

P9, users now will be able to carry a Leica in their pocket without spending a hefty amount of money. Apart from the cutting-edge technology and eye catching style, Huawei P9 has a ground-breaking dual-lens camera capable of capturing more light and offering better clarity, in a true Leica style. Professional photographers have now the option to tweak camera settings, as the P9 offers full manual control over ISO adjustment, exposure compensation, shutter speed, metering mode, autofocus mode and white balance. Plus, there are options to take photos in RAW format which will give its users an edge over other smartphones. Moreover, Leica’s manual blackening of lens edges will ensure that photos taken with the P9 will not catch unwanted flair. The interface is simple and there are direct camera control so that photographers can focus on the image rather than browsing a plethora of camera settings. Each photo taken with the P9 has accurate contrast and saturation, and when it comes to monochrome, the separate sensor produces superior result compared to a color image into converted to black and white The Aperture mode lets users take photos with different depths of field, and lets them change the aperture all the way from f/0.95 to f/16. If we put aside the technical discussion, Huawei and Leica have done an incredible job of combining art and technology in a 5.2 inch android device that is the P9.

eyes stopped on the dim-sum station. The chef custom prepared each and every dim-sum with the desired condiments giving the experience of any dim-sum bar that would be prevalent in the streets of Hong Kong. The Asian tour concluded with a sushi station that offered a wide range of sushi from salmon and tuna to vegetarian options. The succulent lamb and exquisitely tender rib eye satiated the most ardent meat lovers. After such a decadent meal, it was refreshing to snack on their crisp salads. Treats offered a variety of salad from shrimp mango to chickpea salad; we had the option to recreate our own salad with dressings of our choice, garnishing the final touches with capers, olives and anchovies. No meal is complete without ending on a sweet tooth. The creamy mousses, syrupy baklava and gelato station were just some of the rich array of desserts. The cheese platter offered a sharp cheddar or creamy brie with fresh bread or the freshest fruits. With over 90 items, the iftar was indeed a global experience at The Westin Dhaka. The World

From the hustling traffic of Beijing, the Blue Mosque of Istanbul, to the windy city of Chicago; Muslims around the world gather during the Holy month of Ramadan to create a culinary experience that is truly unique of their destination and their palette. It is the season that brings families together, and what better way to enjoy this festivity than to taste delights from around the world. On that note, Westin catered a premium Iftar offer at Treats. The comestible journey started with the ever-familiar smell of sugary fresh jilapis and other local iftar staples. Navigating through Asia, starting with the essential Indian food such as palak paneer and chicken biryani, we travelled further West, to the the Middle East with signature kebabs and the fluffy rice. The fall of the bone mutton of their Laham Mandi was where our hearts stopped; Westin left us feeling like a Persian King. Following that were fried rice, cashew nut chicken and stir fried beef, which made their mark from East Asia to the rest of the world. Next, our

After Veet’s successful event in Cox’s Bazaar, Veet is now plunging into their much-hyped global contest. Yes, VEET Girls on-the-go is going to Bali! The contest has been channeled through their Facebook Page Veet Bangladesh and the response has been enormous. Participants have sent in their girl group photos in hopes to party with Shraddha Kapoor in Bali’s beach party. Renowned Veet celebrities around the world will join them as well. The winning group of 4 are

selected by renowned celebrities based on the most unique photo and creative answers to why an all girls trip is a great idea. In a country as conservative as Bangladesh, an initiative as such is risky yet commendable. We caught up with Tinker Jannat Meem, Founder Admin of Pop of Colour, Makeup and Fashion YouTuber Ashfi Onadi and Owner and Designer of Glamgrl Shabnoor Ahmed to share with us their thoughts on this event. Jannat says, “As a mentor, it was my responsibility to motivate the girls and help them find clues when we went on a treasure hunt. I was ecstatic when we won, but what made me happier is the joy in their faces,” she shares. Women empowerment is usually

bogged down with heavy jargons about rights and equality, but empowerment can simply mean letting your hair down and having a good time. Ashfi comments, “Empowerment to me is all about being independent. I think it’s necessary for girls to travel more often and experience the world. I am thankful to Veet for inspiring this positive change in the girls.” Shabnoor Ahmed, too had a say in this. “The best thing about the campaign was the respect which Veet showed to the girls. The participants were our everyday girl-next-door, but Veet made them feel like queens. It’s an extremely generous platform which allowed the girls to explore and enjoy among themselves.” Keeping all that in mind, Veet is now ready to take Bali by storm and we wish them all the best!

Sultana’s Dream

Owner and designer of Zoan Ash, Asma Sultana on embedding cultural heritage in her design and how she is preparing for the upcoming LA Fashion Week in October Compared to the other South East Asian countries, Singapore is relatively up to date with fashion and culture. “This is one of the reasons why I decided to showcase my line there initially. The Singapore Polo Brunch was a trunk show and it being a socialite event, I feel my collection was welcomed very well. There were people from other countries as well in that event,” she shares. Hence I got well deserved exposure with the event. Her new collection took a lot of time and creativity, and her efforts paid off with the kind of response her line garnered. “My major inspirations revolved around the Oscars, the fashion runways, the royal socialites and even the Kardashians! I love how glam is incorporated into designs,” she explains. Sultana hopes that when women notice her designs and selects it for themselves, they should feel empowered and visualize that they are part of a glamorous lifestyle. “Currently, I am preparing my collection for LA fashion week which is scheduled in October and will be experimenting with our national heritage fabrics as a means to take a bit of Bangladesh with me internationally,” the designer reveals. Sultana observes the rise in

demand for unique and gorgeous dresses, and this keeps her constantly on her toes. “Living in a culture such as ours we have frequent festive occasions. As fashion changes frequently, the challenge lies in understanding the clientele needs and people’s change in taste as well,” Sultana comments. “There are some clients that like to stick to classics whereas others like to experiment with style so it’s always important to keep these aspects in mind,” she says. To describe her latest collection she says it should personify a walk through a glamorous garden. “My collection features a lot of floral embellishments, leafy vines and three dimensional flowers,” she reveals. Her signature style will revolve around florals, however, she is experimenting with tulle fabrics and sequins embroidered onto them and even two toned sequined fabrics. “I am also implementing more runway inspired cuts such as cape dresses, halter necks, off shoulder dresses, empire waist, ball gowns, sheath, pencil cuts and cocktail dresses. Simultaneously Sultana is also using Bangladesh’s heritage fabrics to bring out something truly unconventional.

The Test of Time Aidha Cader sits down with globally renowned Bangladeshi Architect Marina Tabassum and discusses her groundbreaking mosque project

L

“It’s important that people don’t see the small budget but the grandness of the space and light, which is vital for me as an architect.”

ocated within the urban hub of Uttar, with its ever-changing skyline and unplanned development stands the Bait Ur Rouf Mosque. Built on a contemporary design using the cornerstone material of Bangladesh, the clay fired brick embodies local culture and resonates spiritual functionality. It was recently nominated for the 2016 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. “I was commissioned by my grandmother who owned the land and wished it to be used as a neighbourhood mosque,” says Marina Tabassum. The project, which began in 2008, stumbled along many hurdles and the most challenging was to raise funds. For Marina it was a personal task and she shouldered the responsibility, not only as the architect and designer, but she also solicited the finances, clients and builders. The mosque was completed in 2013 and stands as a testament of Marina’s vision of artistic and architectural perfection. Working within limitations as in this case, the budget stretches ones intellect to think beyond the box and create something that is beautiful, functional, cost effective and low maintenance. It’s important that people don’t see the small budget but the grandness of the space and light, which is vital for me as an architect,” she adds. This being her first mosque project, Marina, who is also the Director Academic of Bengal

Institute of Architecture, Landscape & Settlement, extensively researched on the subject from both local and international source materials. Her work in presenting the guidelines for the Abu Dhabi mosques gave her an in-depth understanding of the architecture and the functionality of a mosque space. Her personal preference was the Sultanate period mosques built in Bangladesh, which influenced her design element. The most striking feature is that it is void of any traditional symbolism attached to mosque architecture. There are no domes, minarets, moon and stars as decorative elements. This was a conscious decision by Marina to break free from our need to feel attached to the divine space with symbolisms. “The quintessential of tradition is not in the ashes but in the fire,” Marina shares. She further explains that the the ashes are mere symbols but the fire signifies spirituality. The Bait Ur Rouf Mosque is more than just a mosque for congregational prayers. Its layout is designed to create community centres to facilitate Islamic lectures, and other communal activities. With regard to a separate section for women Marina says, “Women attending the mosque in that locality were not prevalent, however, if and when the need arises, we can construct an upper floor so that they can have a full view and yet be separated.” The base structure is at a thirteen-degree angle to the Ka’aba direction. The exterior

structure is a square with a tubular shape inserted into the interior. This creates a rotation of the prayer hall, forming light courts on the four sides. The congregational hall is raised on eight columns. Auxiliary functions are located in spaces created by the outer square and the cylinder. A key element is the play of light and shadow. The glass openings on the ceiling breathe in natural light, thereby creating an artistic perfection and cost effective lighting. Also, the architectural torrents enhance the airflow, which provides an environmentally sustainable ventilation system. “We have designed the walls as breathing walls with perforated and pours bricks,” says Marina. The Mihrab is highlighted as a shaft of natural light and enhances the interior space. The interior, much like the exterior, void of any form of ornamentation and artistic precision, is achieved by the effective use of light shaft set across the backdrop of clay bricks. “The nomination for the Aga Khan Award is a very prestigious platform,” confirms Marina. Unlike other awards the nominee is recommended by a third party and the project is evaluated by an

independent review board representing the Aga Khan Foundation. On site evaluation, video, photographs, analysis of many criteria including its social and environmental contexts are thoroughly scrutinised before the review board. This is Marina’s second nomination the first being the Architect’s house, a joint project with with Kashef Chowdhury in 2005 as part of URBANA. “I don’t have a signature style. I believe every project requires a different element mind-set and design,” says Marina. Being a woman in this industry was personally never a challenge for her. She feels that though over 50% of girls are entering the field of architecture, only a nominal few are committed to strive further. “If my work and such nominations can encourage the next generation of young women architects to hold firm in the practice of the profession, I would feel accomplished,” smiles Marina. To be an inspiration for the next generation is as important as the structural monuments that stand the test of time, a core value for Marina Tabassum.

‘Let's Break the Rules of Beauty’: The Dove Campaign

The Beauty Within Staying within the fringes of mainstream cultures, Aidha Cader, ICE Today’s culture connoisseur has inculcated an appreciation for food, history, travel and art beyond her comfort zone

On June 14, the US first lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey joined hands through ‘United State of Women Summit’ at the White House to shed light on the issue of confidence, mentorship and women empowerment. The summit welcomed a pool of diverse women from different backgrounds and professions who shared their respective journeys, celebrated their progress and promoted further change. Some of the key points touched by Michelle Obamad struck a chord among the women including myself.

“To know yourself and to love yourself is your first job in life,” stated the US first lady. She also emphasised that, often times we get so caught up in trying to please and satisfy others and expecting them to reciprocate and appreciate us that in the process, we let them define who we are and stagger our potentials. Michelle Obama also mentioned: “Once you start liking yourself, you begin to understand the value of your time and become more aware of your worth.” This notion helped her secure a higher paying job

after she was blessed with her daughters. She elaborated that our goals are constantly evolving therefore we cannot be stagnant; we need to move forward and adjust to these changes. “Knowing your worth and what you have to offer to the world and your society can be very challenging, especially when you don’t have a good understanding of youself. Once you discover yourself and your fullest potentials, it will be easier for you to discover things that excite and motivate you,” she told Oprah. For many women, self worth is what they see in the mirror. “Often times it’s our outwardly image that we are focused on perfecting,” says Sana Habib, an educationalist. In her early thirties, her hair started greying, however, she didn’t let her silver locks define her age or appearance. “I never thought it was important for me to dye my hair since I felt confident and beautiful despite my premature greying,” she adds. Sana also highlights that for many women be it, hair, complexion, body weight or other outwardly appearances weighs down 156

their self-worth. Accepting your flaws is a journey to loving yourself.

It is ironic how we rummage through the glossy pages of fashion magazines and ask ourselves - What is beauty? What is our self-worth? And do we love what we see in ourselves?

At the forefront of brands that promote women empowerment is Dove. Their recent short film, Let's Break the Rules of Beauty, portrays the diversity among Indian women and raises awareness about disregarding beauty stereotypes. The add campaign is gaining popularity and is reflective of the current scenario, be it India or any other part of the world. The social media revolutionising the use of filters and photoshop feeds the ever escalading cycle of image perfecting. The research done into building the Dove campaign in India found that over 76 % Indian women believe that in today's society it is critical to meet certain beauty standards. They also expressed that they need to look a certain way to succeed in life. "This campaign is designed to encourage women to embrace their uniqueness and spark change against the variety of pressures and influences that keeps narrowing down the ideals of beauty,” said Sjardin, Brand Ambassador at Dove India to Adweek. This is not the only campaign by Dove that deals with such a sensitive issue. Over the years, they have run a series of successful campaigns globally. In 2006, the video ‘Evolution’ went viral; in 2013, they launched ‘Real beauty sketches’ that showcases women who describe their appearances to a forensic sketch artist; and recently the ‘Dove chooses beautiful,’ campaign which highlighted how insecure women felt about their looks. Many of the advertisements are now shown in classrooms to discuss image positivity with teenagers in order to start a dialogue about image and self worth.

Cover Story

The Night of the New Moon Eid is approaching and everyone is in anticipation of this holy and joyous festival. After a seemingly endless month of fasting, a thin sliver of moon will show itself, signifying the end of the lunar cycle, and with it, the end of the month of Ramadan. The night of the sighting

Photographs by Ashraf Uddin Apu

of this new moon is called Chandraat and it is very significant to the followers of Islam. Munira Fidai charts down the significance of the night.

C

Gratitude and forgiveness hold special importance because it is believed that the month of Ramadan rains blessings on all Muslims and God is ever merciful to forgive the mistakes of believers

handraat has held religious significance for a long time but it has never before been celebrated with so much gusto, especially in the Indian subcontinent. The lunar cycle ends every month and therefore, while Chandraat takes place each month as well, it is never held to be more significant or more anticipated as it is, before Eid-ul-Fitr. The reason for this is fairly simple. The beginning and end of Ramadan depends on the lunar cycle. Hence, the month of Ramadan may last 29 or 30 days depending on Chandraat. The exact date of Eid-ul-Fitr is never surely known until the sighting of Shawwal’s first lunar crescent. The anticipation and expectation of the moon is what lends Chandraat its charm. It is seen as a reward for the long month of abstinence (Sawm) in the form of Ramadan and a prelude to the Eid celebrations the following day. While Chandraat is equally revered on Eid-ul-Azha, it is not looked forward to so impatiently as it is on Eid-ul-Fitr. This is because Eid-ul-Azha is usually announced 10 days before it is to be celebrated, dissipating anticipation. Some may compare this night to Christmas Eve, to make it easier to understand. Once the new moon is sighted, cries of Chand Mubarak are heard all around and the Ummah, almost suddenly shifts gears from regid to festive mode. And why not? After all, while Chandraat bids farewell to the holy month of Ramadan and brings in the month of Shawwal, it also signifies the end of fasting and the beginning of feasting. After a hard month of fasting, celebrating with some worldly indulgence is well deserved, it seems! While it is good to offer prayers of gratitude and forgiveness after successfully completing Ramadan, there is no specific way decreed as to how to properly pay respect to this night. Gratitude and forgiveness hold special importance because it is believed that the month of

Ramadan rains blessings on all Muslims and God is ever merciful to forgive the mistakes of believers. Some prefer to offer special prayers for the deceased members of their kith and kin on Chandraat. In keeping with the ethics of Ramadan, most people prefer to keep the spirit of charity alive in their actions on Chandraat as well. In addition to offering alms to the needy, many provide new clothes to their domestic help and street children on this night. Many, again, also prefer to feed the needy on Chandraat and maximise blessings from the last night of Ramadan. While quite obviously Chandraat signifies the end of fasting, moderation in the way it is celebrated is encouraged. Instead of jumping straight into food and drinks, it is better to ease into the new eating routine. It is scientifically proven that a month of fasting acts like a cleanse or detox for your body. Anyone who has experienced detox before knows how difficult it is for your body to suddenly change the way it has worked for a full month, which is (hopefully) with prudence and in a matter of hours go back to hogging. So for those who want to enjoy the actual festival of Eid to the fullest, it is good to abstain from gluttony on this night, Ramadan or not! Not only this, many nowadays feel the need to celebrate Chandraat by wearing loud clothes and going to the most happening hangout areas. This sort of behavior is discouraged for two reasons. Of course, there is the safety aspect to think of. Ramadan, being the holiest month, sees the most charity. It also sees the most street crime. Especially in the metro city of Dhaka, chances of being car jacked or mugged increase by a good mile in the month anticipating Eid. The more gaudy and decked up you look, the more chances that muggers and those intending harm will have, to single you out for their crimes. Some with cars usually act irresponsibly with speed limits on this night. This is

While no way is set in stone to celebrate this joyous occasion, it is only sensible to observe Chandraat in a way that is in line with the good habits made during Ramadan

especially true for Dhaka city, which almost always becomes very empty closer to this Eid, because people go to their native villages to celebrate. This encourages people behind the wheel to step hard on the accelerators, often resulting in bad news. One must remember that Chandraat is a time to enjoy with loved ones responsibly. Extravagance here too, must be checked, especially when it borders dangerously close to mortal peril. Those who have religiously followed the dos and don’ts of Ramadan should remember that festive times can make you forget the more important thingsin this case, the Isha prayers. You do not want to be marked absent on the prayer list, first thing after Ramadan. Chandraat, therefore, teaches us to

remain conscious and in touch with all the good habits that we take up during Ramadan, all through the year. In a nutshell, Chandraat is a night of the culmination of the efforts of charity, sexual abstinence (during the daytime) and fasting throughout Ramadan. Needless to say, it is the one night that is looked forward to with much pleasure and reverence. While no way is set in stone to celebrate this joyous occasion, it is only sensible to observe Chandraat in a way that is in line with the good habits made during Ramadan and to consider the feelings of the less fortunate while we rejoice and make merry. It is best to treat Chandraat as a prelude to the main festival of Eid, the following day, rather than a festival on its own. Chandraat and Eid Mubarak!

The Ladies' Man Chandni Chowk, Gausia, Priyangon Market and New Market are exceedingly familiar to Dhakaites. Despite the rise of innumerous plush markets nationwide, these markets have been popular among the masses for generations. From finding the right fabric to matching embellishments, these markets make the perfect places for shopping. Although haggling may be tantamount, the day long struggle of finding a dress of your choice is well worth it. Mehrin Mubdi Chowdhury visits the tailoring hubs in the city to find out how they tackle the fervour of Eid

E

ven after picking out the necessary details, tailoring remains a dilemma to many. But thanks to the prevalent dressmaking culture in Bangladesh; the standard of stitching and tailoring has gained recognition internationally. Over the years, local fashion has changed immensely given the wide range of global influences. While we pick out and chuck out all our choices, the tailors prepare themselves to bear the brunt of our numerous demands. With Eid right around the bend, the work for these craftsmen increases tenfold. Despite the change in trends, the relationship between tailors and customers remains the same. Some of the deshi tailors were asked how their ways of interacting with the customers changed over the years. Upon speaking to a few tailors at the previously mentioned markets, it was found that the tailoring business in itself has been a blessing for both vendors and customers. Anwar, owner of a prominent tailoring

store at Priyangon Market, prides upon being a tailor. “My father used to be a tailor and so was my grandfather. The tradition of making clothes has definitely changed; during my grandfather’s time women barely came out of their homes to get their clothes stitched. Either they did it by themselves or they called us to come to their house and pick up their unstitched clothes,” he recalls. Anwar also states that back in the day, men too had their clothes picked up in order to have their suits or Panjabis stitched. His apprentice Jafar too looks at the work pressure and the dramatic shift of trends today during Ramadan. “People today are more conscious about what they wear during the week of Eid. Hence the demand for having a new dress daily follows for a week or more,” he shares. A store owner at Chandni Chowk who sold materials and tailor-made dresses discussed customer preferences for certain types of fabrics. “We work with many different fabrics from cotton to georgette to chiffon and even brocade.

The tradition of making clothes has definitely changed; during my grandfather’s time women barely came out of their homes to get their clothes stitched

However, recently, ladies have turned to Pakistani lawn pieces based on comfort and superior designs. Every season, the markets stock up with Pakistani lawn pieces which apart from being stylish, is available at a reasonable price. In addition to that, the dresses are adorned with nitty gritty details such as laces and yolks as a final touch to the ensemble. As a result, ladies do not have to wander around to get the superfluities.” Shamim, a master tailor, at a famous New Market tailoring store was asked how they handled the rising pressure of international trends when it hit the local market. He added, “Whenever there’s a new Hindi movie or even Bengali movie release, ladies want to copy the exact style of the heroines in those films. We ask our clients to provide us with a picture, either they print it for us or they show it to us via Whatsapp, Viber or Facebook and we sketch it for them. Then we style the dress according to the drawings.”

We never worked on the day of Eid; all of us follow a system; if we have too much work on our plate, we refrain from taking new orders from clients. We know that being unable to meet deadlines would decrease our goodwill. Even if we take some orders and cannot make them on time, we call up our clients and apologise to them by returning their clothes so that they can go to another tailor. Some of us work till the wee hours of midnight before the Eid day popularly known as ‘chaandraat.’ But for Eid, we take a breather, no matter what. Most of us go back to our hometowns. For those of us who do not celebrate the festivities, take a break on that day and at least three days afterwards.” Despite the rush of Eid, these craftsmen muster up the patience to complete all their tasks before Eid. *Some identifying details have been changed to protect the privacy of individuals

Take Me Home

Monowara Chowdhury looks into the joys of Eid Holidays

F

or many, going back home during Eid-Ul-Fitr, is a cause for celebration; this is a way in which they become one with their roots. After an entire month of fasting, people want to break free from the urban jungle to share their happiness with those who are living away from them. Be it the smell of burnt clay or the gentle breeze in remote village areas, every one of them is reason enough for a quick getaway to the land that raised them. Thus, they are ready to brave all the challenges that come with the journey in order to reunite with those they love and miss. In the spirit of Eid, some of them voice their feelings about returning home, even if it’s for a few days and share how they make the most of this opportunity with utmost fervor. “I always look forward to spending Eid-ul-Fitr with my family and friends. Recently, we have been trying to plan more family holidays but I usually just stay in Dhaka and use the time to visit my siblings, aunts and uncles here. However, I do prefer visiting my hometown in Nilphamari during Eid-Ul-Azha,” shares Cultural Minister, Asaduzzaman Noor. He further elaborates, “I spent my entire childhood and college days in Nilphamari and have grown an emotional attachment to the place where I grew up. All my friends and family are generally a close-knit community. Eid is a good opportunity for me to interact with the people in my constituency and share food together in the spirit of the day.” According to Abdul Selim, the Vice President of Bangladesh Theatre Association and member of Bangladesh Oscar

Committee, “Returning home is like going back to your mother; it gives us immense peace, and also energises us for the post-Eid stress and struggles of another long year in the mechanical urban life.” He also says that his happiness gets doubled when we celebrate the occasion with our loved ones. “We’ve grown up seeing our parents go back to their villages during Eid and we’ve made it a ritual to follow their footsteps,” prides Selim. Some go beyond their comforts to go back, as though it’s their last chance to meet their relatives. On this note, Adib Hossain, Branch Manager of City Bank, Banani, says, “The sighting of the moon is a festivity in itself and this is one of the reasons for visiting my hometown. It’s great to watch the moon with your relatives and family members in the clear sky of your land instead of a crowded city. The happiness comes from within as you relish the most amazing homemade foods.” Of course, after a month of fasting, food takes centre stage. However, the tradition of praying in the mosque with your close ones has a charm of its own. G.Sumdany Don, Chief Inspiration Officer at Don Sumdany Facilitation & Consultancy, says, "Getting intimate with family, sharing traditional food among your loved ones work as a therapy to establish a strong bond with your family. It helps to reduce stress and come out from any sort of depression, which is a dormant notion.” The biggest festival for Muslims, Eid-ul-Fitr, blesses people with the opportunity to take a break from all the hustle and bustle of the city to get the peace of mind to return to our hectic lives with a renewed spirit.
