Iceland Rovers
Memorable Moments and Unique Adventures From years of experience in travelling and planning tours, we believe that visiting a destination should be a complete experience. Places visited and sites seen are important, but so is the pace of your travel. Sometimes it may be dominated by the rapid beats of your heart when you are in the thrill of an adventure but equally appreciated are the moments of silence when you become one with the surroundings and enjoy the moment. The Iceland Rovers way of travel looks at culture, excellent local food and accommodation as important elements of our journey where small details reflect on the whole travel experience. On our tours we keep our groups small to make the experience more personal and help you get an even better sense of both the culture and the nature that surrounds you. Experience Iceland’s unique energy and create your memories in Iceland with Iceland Rovers. Iceland Rovers was established in 1997 by a group of people passionate about Icelandic culture and nature. Since the beginning we have specialized in adventures tours, super jeep highland touring and cultural experiences in Iceland. On all the tours and itineraries we offer, we look at providing quality services. At the same time the preservation of nature is important to us and our objective is always to minimize the environmental impact and to leave no trace when we travel.
Environment first
Icelandic tourism depends on the continued prosperity of our delicate nature. In all the activities and experiences we offer, our objective has always been to minimize the environmental impact and to leave no trace when we travel. Iceland Rovers has adopted the World Wildlife Fund conservation plan, concerning ecological tourism in the Arctic. A part of our philosophy is to support local NGOs and to take an active part in discussion about the development of wilderness and open spaces. We take nature’s side against ideas of heavy industry or new highway projects in unspoiled areas and we pride ourselves in being a company that emphasizes cooperation, sustainability and safety.
Vakinn - quality and environmental system Amongst several environmental rewards and recognitions, Iceland Rovers has received the quality label of VAKINN, the official quality and environmental system for Icelandic tourism. Only tourism businesses that maintain the highest standards in all aspects of their business practices and meet VAKINN´s comprehensive assessment criteria earn the right to carry the official quality label. We encourage you to look for the VAKINN qualification when choosing a tour operator or travel agency in Iceland because it ensures that you are in the hands of trustworthy professionals.
Our services Iceland Rovers is an adventure tour operator that offers a selection of tours and travel options in Iceland. We offer adventures that allow you to discover Iceland’s natural highlights, its history and culture in a unique way.
Adventure group tours: Soft adventures, cultural experiences, highland touring and comfort camping. Iceland Rovers offers a great selection of guided multi day adventures. These tours focus on what distinguishes Iceland in each season. Sometimes it is the culture, other times it is the history, but at all times it is the magical nature that this great country possesses. The style of the tours ranges from comfortable discovery tours with hotel accommodations, to being adventurous and authentic, staying in huts or camps when we head into the highlands. Daily hikes or other activities are always a part of the itinerary.
Theme tours and special interest adventures The Iceland Rovers theme tours focus on the special interests of the traveler while upholding the same unique style of travel we offer in our other group tours. Examples of theme-based tours are photography tours, Icelandic cuisine and knitting tours, where the strong heritage of knitting is explored as we knit our way through the Icelandic nature.
Travel packages: Self-drives Make your life easier and let us help plan your whole adventure in Iceland, including your accommodation, car rentals and day to day itineraries. This way you can experience Iceland at your own pace, but still enjoy the comfort of having a full travel package with a road book created by Iceland Rovers‘ travel experts.
Tailor made – the perfect match to your needs Our tour collection includes a selection of itineraries that can be tailor made to accommodate individual wishes and interests, or you can simply just tell us what you want to see and do. We can adapt the programs to your style of travel. Set a slower tempo for the laid back wanderer, or we can put you on a fast track where you can to see and do as much as possible within your timeframe. For your adventure we will find the right balance to create the perfect tour for you and your family, your group of friends, or both!
Incentives Iceland Rovers specializes in cultural and recreational adventure tourism in Iceland offering a wide choice of activities and teambuilding, customizing programs that have just the right balance of action and luxury.
Super Jeep day tours Iceland Rovers runs a selection of Super Jeep day tours out of Reykjavík. On these 4x4 tours we explore Iceland’s great natural beauty in small groups and travel off the beaten track while visiting some of Iceland’s highlight locations. We also operated northern lights and cultural adventure day tours that combine activities and cultural visits with a search for the northern lights. These are small group tours in minivans.
Extensions Do you have some extra time before or after your tour? Our team at Iceland Rovers would be happy to tailor make extensions to your stay. Complete your experience of Iceland on a privately guided tour or have us set up a self-drive package to visit some new and exciting locations.
OUR KEY INGREDIENTS To create a complete experience every ingredient of your adventure has to be carefully selected to fit each tour. Here are our reflections on the essential elements of your adventure.
Accommodation Each accommodation you stay at is an important part of your travel experience. For all Iceland Rovers tours we choose the best options available for each destination as well as for each type of adventure we offer. We look at the location, authentic experience and local partners. The result may be a rustic highland hut or a luxurious country hotel, or even a tent out on a bed of snow in winter. Whatever fits to make your experience in Iceland a unique one.
Guides The Iceland Rovers team of guides are experienced professionals and travel enthusiasts that share a passion for the Icelandic nature. Our guides are ready to share their knowledge and experience on everything from the Icelandic nature and its geology to history and culture.
Local food and traditional tastes Local food always plays a big part of travelling in Iceland. Homegrown vegetables, local dairy products, fresh fish and free roaming lambs are key in the meals we offer on our tours. Sometimes we also visit local farms for a fresh taste of the season. Then there are traditions that have stuck through the ages with exotic items such as fermented shark, blackened sheep heads, dried fish and black death liquor. A little taste of these create an authentic cultural food experience.
Transportation Travelling in a small group gives more flexibility when it comes to transportation. Our tours never have more than 16 passengers, often between 8-12 persons so small vans allow us to transport our groups in comfort on or off the beaten track. Super jeep tours have maximum of 5-7 persons in a super jeep. Travelling in those modified vehicles gives you a better access to hidden gems in the nature for a real authentic experience. When travelling with your group of family or friends we can tailor make your adventure and type of transport, depending on what you want to see and do.

The Icelandic Highlands in Winter Adventurous Super Jeep Driving Snowshoeing through frozen landscapes In winter, Iceland’s mountainous interior hides many rare treasures under a layer of snow and ice. Places like Hveravellir, Landmannalaugar and of course Gullfoss and Geysir are on our program and at these destinations, more adventures await: hiking in snowshoes through landscapes that are held in winter’s frozen grips and open air baths in natural hot springs. Waterfalls may form magical sculptures from water and ice and vapor clouds bursting out from earth’s interior, solfataras, mud pots, and geysers are strangely spectacular in the winter season. However, these magical places are not too easily accessible. That is why on this tour we use impressive 4x4 super-jeeps that have been modified and adapted for winter conditions (raised chassis and giant underinflated tires allow the vehicles to “float” on the snow) to reach these locations and experience adventures filled with different impressions. Just travelling in these jeeps is an adventure on its own and on this tour we are going on a ride into an enchanting winter world and sometimes in extreme conditions! A winter adventure that takes you to a completely different universe and unique scenery! D1: Þingvellir NP .- Deildartunguhver Hot Spring - Barnafoss - Hraunfossar D2: Hveravellir. Geothermal baths every day Iceland’s “must see” hot spots Crossing of the highlands This is one of our favorite super jeep tours. The aim is to bathe in as many hot springs as possible while at the same time enjoying the wild nature of the Icelandic highlands and good food. Our route takes us between all sorts of pools, from remote, small and unknown natural pools without any facilities at all to the world famous Blue Lagoon. In between, we’ll go for short hikes and get to know the history and geology of Iceland. The super jeeps used for this tour are specially built to take on the rugged Icelandic mountain tracks and they offer an opportunity to experience the country’s less accessible highlands in a more intimate way with a small group. Two nights are spent in quality guest houses, in the north, and in the south, where we will also enjoy gourmet arctic cuisine. This is a tour that offers just the right mix of highland adventures with hot pools, comfortable guest houses and excellent food! An easy but active and fun tour that lets you experience the highlights and the hot spots of Iceland!

Black Deserts The Secret Waterfalls The Mountains of Landmannalaugar On this tour we travel on some of most remote mountain tracks of the Icelandic highlands.Leaving Reykjavík, we turn off the beaten track by the Veiðivötn lake area, preciously green in this wilderness and head up to the western edge of Vatnajökull glacier. Here we get to spend one night in a mountain hut in the middle of the remote highlands. Now we are in one of the blackest deserts on earth where you see some of the most evident signs of the rift that runs through the middle of Iceland. In this world of trolls vegetation is rare, but every now and then we find a fragile flower that has managed to fasten its roots against the odds. On the way down the vegetation slowly becomes more abundant as we come closer to Þjórsá. Tracing our route along the river we will see the powerful waterfall of Glúfurleitarfoss the multi-segmented Dynkur with its cloud of rainbows. On the last day way we make a stop at the famous Landmannalaugar to perfect our highland tour. D1: Reykjavík - Veiðivötn - Jökulheimar. “I enjoyed Helene’s knowledge of Iceland and the knitting. It was nice to have both the information about Iceland, culture, history, geology, and the knitting information all in one person!”
Knitting Workshops: In the knitting workshop, Héléne will share her deep and extensive knowledge of the Icelandic knitting heritage. She‘ll teach many traditional Icelandic knitting styles and show different types of yarn and knitting samples as she shares stories and interviews she made with old knitters. Hélène’s classes are truly inspirational and will delight beginners as expert knitters. Yarn is supplied in the workshops but all other equipment listed in the equipment list for each knitting tour is required. The knitting workshops vary from 1 to 6 hours and each tour and workshop has its own theme. Examples of Knitting Workshops: Icelandic wool workshop: Hélène will tell us about the unique characteristics of the Icelandic wool and the genesis of the famous unspun lopi and will show us sample of artisanal Icelandic yarns. We will knit a little sample in the round with this highly breakable yarn, using the Magic loop technique, a technique largely adopted in Iceland today. “Steek with me” workshop: Almost everything is knitted in the round in Iceland, then cut open or steeked. Purling back seems more intimidating than steeking and Hélène will tell us funny stories of how knitters found out ways to avoid purling in the past. Beside the methods traditionally used in Iceland today, we will explore many different steeks and compare their advantages related to particular projects. We may even dare to steek lace! Icelandic sweater workshop: We will learn about the different sweaters and traditional costume jackets in Iceland, how the well-known Icelandic lopi sweater emerged a surprisingly short time ago and how the yoke pattern developed in the inspired hands of Icelandic women. We‘ll go through all the basic knitting techniques and chart reading as well as knitting a little lopi sweater with all the elements of a full-sized one. Héléne will share designer tips to make the sweater easy knitting, comfortable and a better fit. Traditional Icelandic Leaf mittens workshop: Hélène will tell us about the many different styles of traditional mittens in Iceland, such as the embroidered mittens from North Iceland, the Nordic style mittens, the two thumbed mittens, etc... She will tell us especially about the origins and special motifs in the colorful traditional mittens from the West fjords, called Leaf mittens. We will knit a sample from Hélène’s book.
Traditional Icelandic intarsia workshop: Once commonly seen in knitted inserts in sheep and fish skin shoes, Icelandic intarsia is a tradition unique to Iceland. We will knit a tiny insert in four colors with a cross motif and cover all the basic intarsia techniques as well as the specifics of the Icelandic intarsia. Hélène will also tell us about yarn management and give us tips for knitting the modern and challenging designs in her book, Icelandic Color Knitting: using Rose Patterns.
Traditional Icelandic lace workshop: We will explore the different construction methods and look at the characteristics of the Icelandic lace as seen in the Old long shawls and triangular shawls but also in other garments, accessories and dresses. We will see how designs and patterning evolved and how the unique characteristics of the Icelandic wool played an important role. Icelandic handknits from Textile Museum workshop: The workshop is based on Hélène’s book, Icelandic Handknits, a collection of heirloom designs from the Textile Museum in Blönduós (Voyageurs Press, February 2013). Hélène will present the book in the Museum itself and we will get to knit designs from it under her special guidance.
Bring your companion with you! Non-knitters are most welcome on all of our knitting tours. They will be able to take short walks or participate in other local activities during the knitting workshops. About Héléne Magnússon Hélène is a knit designer with a degree in textile and fashion. Her research into, and many publications about, Icelandic knitting traditions have earned her the respect of textile historians and museum curators throughout Iceland and around the world. Hélène believes that the best way to preserve traditions is to continue using them, giving them new life. Her exclusive designs, inspired by tradition but with a modern twist, have been exhibited widely both in Iceland and elsewhere. She was featured as a significant contemporary knitwear designer in Iceland in Knitting around the world by Lela Nargi. She is the author of Icelandic Color Knitting: using Rose Patterns, a colorful book about traditional Icelandic intarsia and translated into many languages. Her two upcoming books, Icelandic Handknits, a collection of heirloom designs from the Textile Museum in Blönduós and The Icelandic lace dresses of Adalbjörg Jónsdóttir are eagerly anticipated by knitting experts and crafters all over the world, who adore Hélène’s unique style. Hélène is the founder of The Icelandic Knitter (icelandicknitter.com), the first Icelandic online knitting magazine, and of Love Story yarns, a range of artisanal yarns that make the best out of the Icelandic wool. Hélène began her professional life as a lawyer in Paris before she made a complete life change and moved to Iceland, where she worked as a hired girl in a sheep farm and a mountain guide. The varied skills she learned in those early years richly inform the amazing hiking and knitting tours she now passionately guides. „Héléne is known for her unique knitting designs with strong ties to Iceland and Icelandic culture but with a modern twist“

Winter in Iceland is a season that has a unique display of light and colors. The sun rises lower in the sky and we have to adapt our travels to the days being shorter. But while we can use the daylight for discovery and activity, we also enjoy the benefits of having more time to spend in the warm interiors and treat ourselves to great food. The unpredictable weather is another characteristic of the season, a source of adventure that allows for some flexibility our travels. The winter is also a season where the contrasts of snow and geothermal activity become visible. You may see steaming hot springs rise up from snowfields or enjoy taking a dip in a hot geothermal pool in the crisp cold weather. The Northern Lights are one of the season’s greatest highlights and their magical display in the winter sky makes it marks on all winter travel in Iceland.
Winter highlights and popular activities for your tailor made tour Northern lights The Aurora Borealis have intrigued people throughout the ages and many myths have been created about their origin and powers. There is a good reason why they are one of the biggest attractions in winter. Seeing them in the winter sky is just magical! Geothermal In winter the contrasts of ice and fire become more evident. In hot spring areas spouting geysers and bubbling mud pools may be surrounded by a bed of snow. But another usage of geothermal water has to be a part of every winter tour to Iceland, and that is relaxing in a geothermal pool after a day out in the cold! Horseback riding The Icelandic horses are famous for their five gaits and for being present companions. In winter, horse riding takes you into the winter landscapes for an unforgettable day out in nature. Super Jeep winter driving Super Jeep travelling gives you access to many of the rare jewels in nature that the highlands hide in winter. They can take you on a comfortable ride to geysers and waterfalls or on more adventurous winter drives behind the mountains or up on glaciers! Snow shoeing The silences of the still days of winter are best enjoyed on a snow shoe hike. This is a fun active way to explore nature in winter and see some magical locations away from the crowds. Glacier adventures The Icelandic glaciers are a playing field for all kinds of activities. The glacier ice turns blue and clear making winter a good period for Glacier Walks. Ice climbing is also available as well as snowmobile tours on top of the glaciers. History and heritage Iceland has strong roots in its history dating back to 874 when Vikings first took settlement here. For those familiar with the Icelandic sagas it can be interesting to visit some of the locations where they took place. Others might want to learn about the ways of people in the middle ages or how these olden times display themselves in modern culture. Culture and modern design The mix of ancient ways with new trends is part of what makes Iceland so special. In design, traditional fabrics and patterns are reinvented with new methods and style. Take some time to enjoy the Icelandic culture that is very much alive!

Summer in Iceland is a beautiful season with mild weather and endless summer days. During the summer months the sun hardly ever sets and we enjoy the stillness of the bright evenings and nights. It is the season when nature comes alive with amazing bird life, and flocks of sheep and horses roam the hills and lush pastures. The contrasts in the landscape, where the green moss meets lava fields and white glaciers rise above the black sands, becomes more evident and create a magical landscape. The mild climate creates excellent conditions for hiking and other activities, and the bright evenings and nights are perfect to enjoy quiet moments by yourself or in good company.
Summer highlights and popular activities for your tailor made tour Hiking There is no better way to experience Icelandic nature than on foot. It is in the untouched wilderness where you feel the essence of Icelandic landscapes and climate. With shorter or longer hikes in your program, in a day or multi day tours, you can enjoy the wide open spaces, the fragile fauna and the fresh air Iceland is known for. Glacier adventures In Iceland the glaciers are close and accessible for various adventures. Glacier walks, ice climbing or snowmobiling are all popular activities and so is sailing among the icebergs of the glacier lagoons of the south. Add a glacier tour to your itinerary and experience ice under your feet! Highland touring in Super Jeep In the mountainous interior highlands you find some of the most amazing places and variety in landscapes. Areas where volcanic or geothermal activity has shaped the land and waterfalls, rivers and glaciers reign. Many of the mountain tracks are roads less travelled, only accessible in 4x4 vehicles. Hot springs Due to the geological location of Iceland, geothermal areas are spread around the country; from the sea side to the most remote areas of the glaciers. With boiling water, mud pools, colorful landscapes, geysers and nature hot springs, the many untouched geothermal areas make for a great place to visit. Whale watching Whale watching is one of the most popular activities in Iceland. Whale watching tours are available in multiple cities and towns in Iceland so no matter where your travels will take you, you can still enjoy this experience. In Iceland, what you will likely see are Minke and Humpback Whales, and occasionally dolphins and porpoises! Bird watching Over 350 species of birds have been recorded in Iceland which is a remarkable feat when one considers that just about 20% of them are regular breeders. The country’s lava formations, combined with its location, make for wonderful nesting spots. With large breeding grounds and colonies all around the island you will find some the best areas for birdwatching in the world. Nature moments Part of getting out in to the Icelandic nature is the peace and quiet. Away from it all you can enjoy moments of perfect relaxation when only the sound of nature can be heard. The bright summer nights when the air is completely still are particularly memorable.

In the Shadow of the Volcano Þórsmörk Glacier Valley, named after the mighty pagan God Thor, is a natural oasis that lies just behind the now famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano. To get into this land behind the glaciers can be quite the adventure. We have to drive on a 4x4 track, over numerous unbridged glacial rivers, some of which can be quite deep. Once there, you will find yourself in a magnificent valley, full of geological wonders and unique vistas that Icelandic nature lovers have enjoyed for centuries, with the volcano rising to the south.
