PUBLISHER’S LETTER

WHAT IS

FEBRUARY

MOST FAMOUS FOR?

W

ell, if you’re in a relationship, the main reason for the existence of the second month of the year seems to be Valentine’s Day. It is also rumoured that this is a festival more celebrated by women than men – is this true? Anyway, we have tried to accommodate everyone with this, our special Valentine’s issue. Ladies, we focus on the latest collection by Agent Provocateur, created by that famous sister act of Penélope and Mónica Cruz, and gents, how about checking it out as well for some ideas for a Valentine’s Day gift? Continuing the theme, Padre Peter considers the historical background of Saint Valentine. Who was he and why is he associated with a festival that celebrates love and passion - and could it have anything to do with the Christian Church incorporating a pagan Roman festival? Hopefully our music and movie review will give you some ideas about which film you should take your Valentine’s Day date to see – and which album to play on the car’s sound system on the way! Just in case you thought that our February issue was all about the girls, we have something to entice the boys as well, in the shape of the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S. If it was normal to buy men presents on the big day, I reckon that this would be top of the list. This might not be the largest car in the showroom, but it has a real tiger in the tank, thanks to the revised V12 engine. It has won a new fan in our motoring correspondent, Ian Kuah, who knows a thing or two about handling and performance and was obviously won over by this new addition to the famous Aston Martin marque. Since its opening, El Rincón de La Sala has become one of the most popular places on the Coast to meet up with friends, enjoy a drink or two and have something tasty to eat, so when it closed to allow renovations to be undertaken for a few weeks recently there were more than a few glum faces. However, the good news is that this well loved establishment has reopened and is better than ever. We visited recently and were very impressed by all the changes – read all about it on pages 92 and 93. We also welcome a completely new concept in the shape of D-Wine; whether you are an enthusiastic amateur or a wine expert you will enjoy visiting this recently opened temple to fine wines. Our very own Amber O’Shaughnessy went along to take a look and spent an educational hour in the company of sommelier, Francisco. I should point out at this point that a bottle of excellent wine also makes an excellent Valentine’s Day gift for both sexes. Have a great month and a fun and imaginative Valentine’s Day! Until next time... Andy Clark

CruzControl Agent Provocateur’s new diffusion label, L’Agent, is designed in collaboration with Penélope and Mónica Cruz. Combining the expert craftsmanship and fabulous fabrics typical of this company with a youthful attitude, L’Agent creates stunnintg lingerie sets in a range of colours and patterns.

L

’Agent by Agent Provocateur launched in August 2013 and is now in its second collection. The line is playful, fresh and sophisticated and is designed to be sexy and comfortable at the same time. Agent Provocateur’s influence runs through the entire collection, but L’Agent employs different fabrics, colour palette and construction, offering a more modest price that will appeal to a wider audience. Penelope and Monica wanted to design lingerie for all women and this is reflected in the diversity of the collection. Penélope tells SOCIETY MARBELLA; “I have always had a natural affinity with Agent Provocateur, I’ve always loved the brand – you could say I was a bit of a collector, and I have chosen AP lingerie for some of the most important times in my life. My sister modelled for an Agent Provocateur campaign a couple of years ago and they had a great connection, so when the opportunity to work with them on a diffusion line came up, we jumped at it. We were so happy to be given the chance to work with this amazing team and to create something that is very much our own, but also has the Agent Provocateur DNA running through it in every piece.”

“I have chosen AP lingerie for some of the most important times in my life.” 14

- Penelope Cruz

Monica continues, “I did my first campaign with Agent Provocateur and then the possibility of designing with them came up. We already knew the brand and thought it was a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with a great, creative team on L’Agent.” The second collection from the Cruz sisters and the Creative Director of Agent Provocateur is a development of the lines established in the debut season. New colourways, fabrications, trims and shapes are explored, with each set bearing the hallmark quality and tongue-in-cheek sex appeal for which Agent Provocateur is famous. The range exudes a fresh feminine feel, reflecting the change in season. It is diverse, from brightly coloured girly designs to sultry, sexy pieces, all with a playful edge. Something bright, something girly, something slinky, something scintillating; the product of the combined experience of three women - Penélope Cruz, Mónica Cruz and Sarah Shotton – the L’Agent by Agent Provocateur collection is the complete modern lingerie drawer.

15

Something bright For Spring-Summer ‘14, the L’Agent design team embraced a kaleidoscope of new colours. Eye-popping hues and saturated shades prevail: the delicate feminine lace of the Monica set is injected with rich cobalt and fuchsia in spring and acid yellow and violet for high summer. The smooth and silky Danita is an instant classic in Valentino red and becomes a modern hit in glowing parma violet. A brilliant shade of fuchsia emboldens everything from the popular classic Marisela to the

brand new Cloe, a perfect everyday set made of mesh and fine scallop-edge lace. Boldest of all is the Leonara – available in original leopard with scarlet bows for the classics range, but re-imagined in vivid turquoise with neon pink bows for the high summer drop.

Something girly Saccharine sweet and gorgeously retro, the Febe is a perky new addition to the L’Agent repertoire. A frilly suspender brief polka-dotted in Valentine’s Day red is paired with a full-cup bra of soft and playful mesh. The Laia – made from fuchsia pointe d’esprit tulle and finished with flame red satin trim and bows – bears the same nostalgic innocence. The soft-cup Clementina is made of cheeky, sheer black mesh but is embroidered with neon pink buds giving it an ultra-girl finish, while the high summer Laia is a breath of fresh air in summer sky blue semi-sheer mesh trimmed with flashes of frisky pink satin bows and lace.

precision and designed to flatter and sculpt, this classic set now includes a strapless bra in its repertoire and is available in elegant black or blushing nude. The new Adela is a boldly graphic set made of cleanly cut panels of rouge mesh and leopard Jacquard, while the Lucila is the ultimate statement of slinky sensuousness. Made of nude power mesh that contours the body, and patterned with classic flock leopard, this set comes with a body-con dress that cuts a devastatingly sexy silhouette. This season the slinky-satin Marisela range is

Something slinky The underpinnings of any good lingerie drawer, these sets are chic, modern and timelessly sexy. The Penelope is the hero of the range: cut with razor

Brand History L’Agent is the diffusion line of the notorious Agent Provocateur brand founded in 1994 by Joseph Corré (the son of Vivienne Westwood) and Serena Rees. The vision for Agent Provocateur grew from Rees’s desire to change the face of underwear shops selling drab undergarments. Corré had no desire to design lingerie at first but after unsuccessfully attempting to find suitable products for the retail outlet he was planning with his wife,

16

decided to create his own lingerie line with Rees. Since its launch Agent Provocateur has proceeded to establish 30 stores in 14 different countries. The various advertising campaigns in Agent Provocateur’s trajectory have featured high profile individuals such as Kate Moss, Poppy Delevingne and Maggie Gyllenhall and have always caused quite a stir. For example, in

December 2001 Agent Provocateur produced a short film featuring Kylie Minogue riding a bucking bronco wearing the company’s lingerie and more recently in December Kate Moss graced the cover of Playboy magazine for its 60th anniversary wearing the brand’s famously provocative Bullet playsuit. Despite attracting its fair share of controversy (some Agent Provocateur

Something shocking Mónica and Penélope Cruz name each range in the collection after a personality type; the sisters were inspired

advertisements were actually banned by the Advertising Standards Authority for being “degrading to women”), the luxury lingerie company shows no signs of reining it in. In fact it seems that it is prouder than ever of all the brand stands for: presenting women as bold, fearless individuals who embrace their sensuality and are empowered to control their own destinies. No greater icon adequately captures this feminist spirit than the queen of music herself

by their most mischievous friends when naming the naughtiest underwear. The Fara is a classic example of Agent Provocateur playful sexiness: made of layers of sheer black mesh, it features peekaboo zip closures which can be opened or closed to reveal as little or as much as the wearer desires. The Belisa is guaranteed to shock any onlooker into silence – a fantasy of black mesh and tiers of scalloped lace. The Esthar, which features in Society Marbella’s cover shot this month, is the ultimate Valentine’s

surprise, complete with love-heart embroidery on the Valentino-red lace, and a fetish-frilly apron suspender for a playful wink.

– Beyoncé who wore the Alina and Damson sets in two of her new music videos ‘Haunted’ and ‘Jealous’.

the month of love, we would like to applaud Agent Provocateur on its ability to encourage women around the world to showcase and enjoy their sensuality.

In recent years Agent Provocateur has also diversified into swimwear, hosiery and a selection of beauty products and cosmetics including fragrances Maitresse and Pétale Noir.

Meanwhile the classic Rosalyn returns to enliven bedrooms everywhere, with its ultra-feminine sheer polka dots in racy red or classic black, and the bold addition of an ouvert knicker to shock and scintillate.

So as the Cruz sisters launch their second collection to help us celebrate

As we’re now in the month that celebrates all things to do with love and St. Valentine, we bring you our favourite loved-up couples. The world of celebrity couples can be a fickle one but as these famous duos prove, once Cupid strikes you with his bow, even the most famous can turn true love fairytales into reality.

‘The Unmarried Couple’ KURT RUSSELL & GOLDIE HAWN

The incredibly gorgeous Goldie Hawn and her equally good-looking partner, Kurt Russell have been together since 1983 but surprisingly have never legally married. Seemingly happy with their arrangement, the couple both have children from previous relationships and a son together, as well as five grandchildren. Proving stardom and all that comes with it does not have to alter how you feel about the one you love, Goldie and Kurt have shown the younger couples that to make it work, you just have to believe in each other and in love itself.

18

The Cool Couple

EMILY BLUNT & JOHN KRASINSKI

The Influential Couple

DAVID BECKHAM & VICTORIA BECKHAM Since meeting at a charity football match in 1997, Victoria and David Beckham have been through their fair share of ups and downs but their relationship has not only survived but thrived. With four children and careers that have seen them become two of the world’s most renowned style and fashion leaders, Victoria and David can certainly show the rest of us how to make a marriage work.

Although they have only been together since 2008 and married for three years, actors Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are possibly the coolest couple in Hollywood and there’s almost nobody in tinsel town with whom they’re not friends. Counting Jennifer Anniston, Reese Witherspoon and Stanley Tucci among their best pals, this couple, who have just announced their first pregnancy, are always on the invite list to any party.

The Been Married for Years and Still Madly in Love Couple TOM HANKS & RITA WILSON

Actors Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks have been married for an incredible 26 years and remain just as in love today as they were on the day they married. Tom already had two children when the pair met and got together and they have since had two more sons – and they now also have two grandchildren. The couple have been sure to keep their relationship private and have supported each other throughout the years. If you look closely you will still see the glint in their eyes when they look at one another.

The Family Couple

BRAD PITT & ANGELINA JOLIE

The Talented Couple JAY-Z & BEYONCE

Undoubtedly two of the biggest names in the music industry, Mr and Mrs Carter - AKA Jay-Z and Beyonce - first met and collaborated on a song in 2002 and shortly afterwards began dating. The couple have famously kept a low profile with their relationship and often refuse to speak about each other in interviews. They tied the knot very quietly in April 2008 and have been happily married ever since, welcoming baby Blue Ivy in 2002. Friends with some of the world’s other top players including Michelle and Barack Obama, Jay-Z and Beyonce have become one of the most talented couples in history.

Brad Pitt may have lost some popularity when he suddenly left Jennifer Aniston for Angelina Jolie but as the years have passed and Pitt and Jolie have shown their caring side with an enormous brood of children, he is now thought of as a caring partner and great father. When they got together back in 2005, Angelina had one adopted son and soon after they were pictured together for the first time, the actress adopted a daughter from Ethiopia. At the beginning of 2006, the children’s names were changed to Jolie-Pitt and Brad adopted the pair. Jolie also announced her pregnancy and gave birth to their first biological daughter in May 2006. Just a year later they travelled to Vietnam where they adopted a young boy making him their fourth child. With biological twins arriving in 2008, the couple’s family was complete and they announced their engagement.

The Same Sex Couple

ELLEN DEGENERES & PORTIA DE ROSSI Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi form one of our favourite Hollywood couples, although they have only been together for 10 years (a relatively short relationship compared to some of our other candidates), they have always shown their love for each other publicly and are two of the nicest people in celebrity coupledom. They first got together in 2004 and finally in May 2008 they were able to announce their engagement when California overturned the same-sex marriage ban. They were married at their home in August of that year and have been happily hitched ever since.

WOULD THE REAL

Saint Valentine PLEASE STAND UP? By Padre Peter

I

n 1836 Father John Spratt preached a sermon in Rome. Pope Gregory XVI was so impressed that he gave the good father a little gift. It was a reliquary containing some remains of Saint Valentine, together with “a small vessel tinged with his blood”. These objects may still be seen today in a church in Whitefriar Street in Dublin. You may also view the remains of the saint in the church of Saints Peter and Paul at Vyšehrad near Prague, whilst his skull, crowned with flowers, may be viewed in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Rome (where it was placed following its discovery also in 1836 in the catacombs of Saint Hippolytus). Other pieces of the saint are to be found at Roquemaure in France, in Vienna, in Malta, at the Birmingham Oratory in England, and in the Gorbals in Glasgow. One problem about all this is that there are about a dozen gentlemen going by the name of “Saint Valentine” listed in the Roman Catholic calendar (with one “Saint Valentina”), whilst the Eastern Orthodox Church provides still yet others. Only about five appear to have died on February 14th. Of the remainder, one, Saint Valentine

22

Jaunzarás Gómez, was martyred as late as September 1936. This uncertainty led to the removal of the saint from the General Calendar for universal liturgical veneration in 1969. (Saint George suffered a similar fate). The fact remains, however, that Saint Valentine is a definite historical figure, and once the myths and legends have been cleared away the most likely candidate for the traditional Saint Valentine, celebrated on the 14th February, is the martyr bishop of Terni, Valentinus, who met his death on the orders of the Emperor Claudius II “The Goth” (whom he had unwisely tried to convert to Christianity) on the Via Flaminia, near the Milvian Bridge, on that date in 269AD (or possibly 270AD or 273AD). In 1960 a church dedicated to him was built for the needs of the Olympic village in Rome. It is still in popular use. It was not until 496AD that Pope Gelasius ordered February 14th to be observed as a feast day in his honour, but how he came to be associated with courtly love remains a mystery (although his involvement with his gaoler’s daughter may provide a clue!). It is perhaps also

a mystery as to why he is the patron saint of bee keepers, sufferers from epilepsy, fainting, and the plague, travellers and young people; a motley collection! It is likely that his crime was to be caught marrying Christian couples. Quite apart from the fact that Christians were at that time, once again, being persecuted, married men were excused military service, and his activities were seriously hampering the efforts of the recruiting sergeants. He was imprisoned in the house of a certain Judge Asterius. The judge had a blind daughter. As Valentinus began to preach to him, he challenged Valentinus to prove his faith by restoring her sight. Saint Valentine obliged, and the judge, together with his family and forty others, was baptised. Saint Valentine and all the Christian captives held by the judge were freed. As he left his prison, Valentine gave the judge’s daughter a note signed “from Your Valentine”. Quite how she read it, coming from a celibate priest, is not recorded. Continuing where he had left off, he again fell foul of the authorities and went to his martyrdom. Having been beaten with clubs and having been

“For this was on seynt Volantynys day Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make”

stoned, when he failed to die he was beheaded. We have to wait until 1382 to find Saint Valentine associated with romantic love. In the “Parlement of Foules” Geoffrey Chaucer wrote: “For this was on seynt Volantynys day Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make” The word “bird” is now, of course, more likely to apply to the female of the species rather than the male. The poem was written to commemorate the engagement of Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia (they were both aged 15 when they were married). The more discerning reader may well question the idea that birds mate in February, but we have to take into account the alteration of the calendar in 1582, and the effects

of climate change (even then!) What is surprising, however, is the fact that no such romantic tradition appears to have existed before Chaucer. Equally surprising is the fact that about the same time three other poets, Otto de Grandson from Savoy, John Gower from England, and Pardo de Valencia, all hit on the same idea. Not long after Chaucer, in 1415, Charles, Duke of Orleans, sent the first known “Valentine” to his wife from the Tower of London, where he was imprisoned following the Battle of Agincourt. Not to be outdone Henry V hired a ghostwriter named John Lydgate to compose a “Valentine” to Catherine de Valois. Today, something like one billion “Valentine Cards” are sent. But it was not until the eighteenth century that “Butler’s Lives of the Saints”

suggested the idea that the Church had adopted Saint Valentine’s Day in order to supersede “Lupercalia”; a Roman feast of indescribable lasciviousness (in the eyes of the Church) dedicated to Faunus, the god of agriculture and fertility. At this feast the “Luperci”, an order of priests, would retire to a cave where they sacrificed a goat (for fertility) and a dog (for purification). They then cut the goat’s hide into strips and dipped the strips into the sacrificial blood. They then went into the streets and began slapping passing women with the strips. The ladies welcomed such an assault as they felt that it made them more fertile. Later in the day all the young ladies in the city put their names into an urn, from which the city’s bachelors drew lots. These pairings were valid for a year. From time to time marriages resulted. A discreet veil must be drawn over other possible outcomes…

Línea Directa

THE BEST COMPANY FOR EXPATRIATES AT THE BEST PRICE

Since 1998 Línea Directa, the market leader in the sale of direct car, motorbike and home insurance in Spain, has offered an exclusive telephone service entirely in English and German. This service, the first of its kind in Spain, forms part of the company’s commitment to quality and excellence, which have also made it the market leader in this business sector, due to the fact that it

currently has over 63,000 foreign customers residing in Spain. As a result, services such as purchasing a policy, making enquiries, processing claims, sending documents and 24-hour assistance can all be carried out in English or German at a time which is convenient for the customer by making just one phone call.

And not only does Línea Directa offer the best, it also offers its services at the most competitive price on the market. It does this in two ways:

Price personalisation: behind each quote there is a sales professional who, via a quick questionnaire, will search for the best product and conditions to suit the customer’s personal requirements and will assess him or her according to their individual circumstances.

Maximum competitiveness: still at the best price, this month Línea Directa is making Expats an exclusive 12x11 offer, which allows them to enjoy one year of insurance for the price of 12 months. And what is more, if the person requesting this offer already has another car insurance policy with Línea Directa, then the offer will be 12x10, which is to say two months’ free cover. This is the result of a strategy which is permanently geared towards offering customers the very best quality at the very best price.

The album has been described as a companion piece to his 2002 album, Sea Change and evokes a sense of infectious optimism. Many of the musicians that collaborated on Sea Change also returned for Morning Phase including Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Smokey Hormel, and Joey Waronker. Beck’s father David Campbell is also reported to have contributed orchestral arrangements for the album, as he has done for his previous albums.

Drafted into a fellowship, he undertakes an epic quest to try and stop an evil tyrant but, as he is completely unprepared, the journey becomes one of hilarity and near hopelessness. One for the kids (and big kids) this film from Warner Bros is sure to be a hit with fans of animation and includes a stellar cast of voices. A fugitive British armed robber arrested in a spectacular police raid at his Costa bolthole has been jailed in Spain for drugs and firearms offences. Andrew Moran, 31, was nabbed last May as he relaxed by the swimming pool of his sunshine villa in Calpe near Alicante after more than four years on the run. At the time he was one of Britain’s most wanted criminals and was captured during a spectacular police raid in Spain. He accepted a six and a half year jail sentence in Spain after striking a deal with prosecutors. Moran, part of an armed gang that held up a Royal Mail van in Colne, Lancashire in 2005, made the lastminute deal ahead of a trial at a court in Cartagena, south east Spain.

Ribery. Everyone was talking and you try not to listen but you cannot help but be influenced by such an atmosphere.” He continued: “It was a very emotional moment, especially when my son came to my arms looking happy. That made me lose control of my emotions even more and I started to cry. Then when I saw my family’s tears, I cried even more. Real Madrid and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been honoured as the best football player in the world for 2013 with the FIFA Ballon d’Or award. It’s the second time he’s won the award in the past five years. Ronaldo admitted that he found the process nerve-wracking. “There was huge tension for me,” the 28-year-old told France Football in the annual interview given by the Ballon d’Or winner. “Everyone was talking about the Ballon d’Or. At first they said I was going to win, then I wasn’t going to win and it was going to be Franck

“They were honest tears. I did not expect it and in that moment I felt very happy. For those who don’t know me, it must have been a huge surprise to see me cry like that. I always look serious on the pitch but I am a natural and spontaneous person.” “I am not going to rest on my laurels. I want more, both with Real Madrid and Portugal. The Ballon d’Or is not an end in itself, even if every player dreams about it. Even my mother was asking me whether I would win! I certainly feel much calmer now that it is all over.”

On January 3rd, Real Madrid and Spain’s goalkeeper, Iker Casillas and his partner Sara Carbonero welcomed their baby boy Martín into the world.

One of Spain’s most exclusive hotels has been left devastated by a chimney fire. El Lodge, located in the Sierra Nevada ski resort and owned by the Marbella Club, has been left entirely gutted by the blaze. Due to the hotel being built mainly of wood the fire spread rapidly throughout. Thirty-two clients and 20 members of staff had to be evacuated, but no-one was injured, after the alarm was raised at 9.45am

“I want to share with you the most important and moving moment of my life: the birth of my son,” said Casillas, captain of Spain’s World Cup and double Euro-winning national team. He may have been just six days old, but Iker has already gone to the trouble of signing him up for Real Madrid membership. Casillas, 32, won the hearts of Spaniards when he kissed Carbonero, 29, live on air as she interviewed him after Spain’s victory over the Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup final.

Spain announced this month that it has retaken the number three spot in world tourism in 2013, overtaking China by attracting a record 60.6 million international visitors. But France remains the world’s most popular country for visitors. Foreign tourist arrivals surged by 5.6 per cent in the year.”The new figures for 2013 allow our country to retake the number three position in this indicator after having overtaken China,” Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy boasted. Spain now stands behind only France with 83 million international tourist arrivals and the United States with 67 million.

Desigual, the Spanish clothing store in Madrid, kicked off their January sale in style with a very cheeky gimmick: The first one hundred semi-nude shoppers were allowed free clothes. Spanish bargain hunters braved the winter temperatures and turned out on mass wearing only their smalls. Lucky shoppers in skivvies earned one free top and one free bottom, which we’re guessing they used to cover up immediately.

The number of unemployed people in Spain dropped slightly in the final quarter of last year, the first such fall in a decade and the latest in a series of encouraging signs that point towards a nascent economic recovery. The data, contained in a labour market survey, is likely to bolster confidence in the economy at a time when investors are piling into Spain’s sovereign debt and other assets on a scale not seen since the start of the crisis.

Spanish police have arrested one of Europe’s top currency forgers. The 60-year-old man, whom the police consider “a real artist” of counterfeit money, had worked with such a degree of perfectionism that his €50 note ranked among Europe’s top 10 imitation bills. Following a year-long investigation, officials from Spain’s national police and Europol detained the man in the garage of his house outside Toledo. Police were able to recoup counterfeited imitation notes worth €310,000 but estimate that €1m of counterfeit notes are still floating around Spain and potentially the rest of Europe. The reach of the man’s notes was even more impressive given the fact that he had only started counterfeiting two years ago.

The Makeup MASTER CLASS Text by Nicola McGeorge Retouching Gerard Oliveras @ goaretouch.com

Each month Nicola McGeorge takes you behind the scenes at one of the leading fashion and photographic make-up courses in Spain.

S

tress. We have had our first practical mock exam - dun, dun, DUN! The conditions were the same as the real thing, where we would be marked on things such as hygiene and keeping our station tidy (why does everyone shoot me a knowing look when I explain that part?) Our brief was to create a makeup look for the theme Alter-Ego, incorporating a few of the special effects techniques that we had recently been taught. To throw a spanner into the works (I think our tutor, Faye gets a kick out of doing that), we had to design two looks on one face. Think half man, half women or part human, part creature. Honestly, my mind went blank. I spent days trying to come up with ideas - even one would have been good but nothing came. Talk about writer’s block, I had makeup block. Faye told me not to panic because something would come to me when I least expected it. So, I was watching Iron Man 3 (LOVE Robert Downey Junior) when the idea of creating a superhero came to me. Not hard to see the link here really, is it? I wanted to create a woman, who was normal during the day, but at night her alter-ego came alive and her superhero spirit would show itself. Now that I had a plan, I started to get excited. I booked the beautiful Cristina to be my model. Just one look at her and I had to adjust my design. Her day persona would be a supermodel: it was easy-peasy to design that section of her face. Now for the superhero; I wanted her to have a birdlike feel, as one of her powers would be to fly. After hours of researching exotic birds (I now know enough to become a twitcher), I settled on a parrot. A blue beak parrot to be precise. I felt the blue would be the most striking against her skin tone. I added feathers, scales, dark contouring and bird-like lashes to my design. Now I had to make it come to life.

36

The week before the exam I spent most evenings trying out different special effects on myself. It became the norm for me to answer the door, half painted blue with lumps coming out my head. No, I am not showing you the photos. I really wanted to create 3D ridges on my forehead with moulding wax, however no matter what I did I looked like I had stuck tadpoles to myself. I didn’t have time to order already formed latex pieces so I had to just go with painting on liquid latex scales, which, once painted, would create a textured surface that would pop out from the rest of the makeup. Spain being the nightmare that it is to get pro makeup products, I couldn’t find blue grease paint anywhere on the Coast. After running round El Corte like a mad woman covered in various shades of blue, I bought two pots of Aquacream from Makeup Forever, one in a turquoise, the other peacock blue. On the big day itself, it all started off smoothly. I began by painting liquid latex shapes all over Cristina’s face, to create the 3D scales and continued this down her arms and chest. I then blocked out one of her brows with spirit gum, rolling them as flat as possible. While waiting for everything to dry I moved over to the supermodel side. I opted for the smoky look on her eyes, winging them out for a catlike effect. Yes, I know cats and birds don’t mix, just go with it please. Wanting to try out my new Chanel products, I applied Rouge Allure 217 Radieuse, a subtly cool-toned pink, to Cristina’s lips; stunning. I had bought the most natural lashes from MAC for the Supermodel’s eye, but Cristina’s lashes were so long, they only needed a slick of mascara. So far, so good. Then disaster struck. At the last minute I decided to borrow Faye’s blue greasepaint. MISTAKE. Never change your ideas last minute. It came out a very wishy-washy blue and I simply didn’t have the time to keep building it up to

get the colour I needed. Panicking, I whipped out the MUFE turquoise shade and started to smear it all over Cristina’s face. I had opted for the lighter blue, thinking that, as I already had a blue base, the peacock blue would be too dark. Wrong again. I ended up with a Smurf, not a superhero. By now I had turned a nice shade of blotchy red and was starting to sweat. I dumped my brushes and used my hands to apply the peacock blue, this is a big hygiene no-no, but all rules had gone out the window. Now I had the right colour but because the makeup was three layers thick you couldn’t see the latex scales and, to top it off, the cream makeup had started to react with the grease paint and crack. Now I only had 20 minutes left and the other girls had already finished. I glued on the ENORMOUS feathery lashes from Makeup Forever to her superhero eye, lined the inner rim in yellow to make it look more birdlike, contoured with black shadow and plaited her hair clipping in feathers as I went. I felt like I had done five rounds with Mike Tyson. The other girls had really outdone themselves (although only three of us turned up for the exam - tut, tut girls). Zoe created a cheerleader who had been burnt in a fire and Katie went for full-on androgyny. My model loved her new look and sped off to show her other half his new superhero girlfriend!

Valentines AFFAIR Text by Nicola McGeorge / Photos by Ruth Jones

he countdown to Valentine’s Day has begun. If you are looking to impress without stress then head to The Nail Place, where the talented team will beautify you from top to toe. Everything else can be left to the other half to organise, can’t it? Valentine’s Day is inconveniently placed in February, not a great month when it comes to looking good in your underwear! For the last few weeks I have been wrapped up head to toe and not wanting to get out of bed - let alone slap on body moisturiser - before getting dressed. A Valentine’s Goddess I am definitely not. So when I was asked to try out The Nail Place’s Valentine package, I put on my Uggs and was out the door before my duvet could persuade me otherwise. Due to central heating my skin was feeling dry, crêpey and dull, so salon owner, Samira Khoshnou, suggested that I start with a spray tan. Slightly dubious, after having my fair share of fake tan disasters (my face tends to take on a lovely shade of orange and at my Sixth Form ball even Roald Dahl’s OompaLoompa would have been jealous), so it took a bit of coaxing to get me into a private tanning booth. Samira explained that with Diva Spray Tanning there were colour choices of light, medium, dark and ultra dark, meaning there is a shade for everyone. I admit I totally freaked out when she decided to go over my face for a second time, I mean, did they want me looking like Donatella Versace in the magazine? However, Samira was right; the end result was a gorgeous, healthy glow, which faded evenly over the next week and my skin was left feeling smoother and silkier. The biggest benefit was that my pigmentation on my face was evened out so I only needed the smallest amount of makeup.

Next up was the pedicure. My feet haven’t seen daylight since September and I expected nail technician, Eeva, to reel back in horror once my hooves were revealed. But she just got straight to work while I relaxed in a modern spa pedicure chair with a refreshing lemon fragranced anti-bacterial footbath additive. Eeva took care of any hard skin, (there was a pile of it by the time she had finished), cuticle care and nail shaping, followed by exfoliation up to the knee and then application of a hydrating, softening masque. All this was then finished off with a relaxing foot massage. By this point I was totally ignoring what our photographer was babbling at me, as I had slumped into a drool-worthy state of bliss.

Now came the difficult task of choosing the colour and design. Diamanante? Accent nail? Nail art? Ahhhhh…I finally opted for the traditional Valentine’s colours of red and black, but to add a modern twist Rachael created an inverted French using the world famous Jessica GELeration. A hybrid between gel and polish, it doesn’t chip or peel and dries in seconds, so would definitely last until the biggest date night of the year. Eeva then recreated the design on my toes. The effect was totally vamp-a-licious.

To complete my Valentine’s look, the queen of nail art, Rachael, (whose clients have included supermodel diva Naomi Campbell), waved her magic wand over my terrible talons. Yes, I admit it, I have a problem - I am a nail biter. Poor Rachael didn’t have much to work with at all. To increase length she added tips and, because my nails are weak and product tends to lift easily, she opted for the acrylic system which creates a hard protective layer over the nails.

EATING DISORDERS “Choose your words wisely. It’s easier to build a child than rebuild an adult” Intro by Nicola McGeorge

Since my first meeting with Gemma Wood early in 2013 we have discussed hundreds of topics during our monthly editorial meetings. A half an hour meeting can easily slip into two or three as conversation flows from one subject to another. It is not often you meet someone who can hold your interest for that long, let alone make you feel that you have learned something life changing. I am often

moved to tears, as Gemma’s ability to read people unintentionally hits a raw nerve. We have covered everything from drug abuse to the stigma of mental illness during our sessions; however, each time we touch on the subject of eating disorders, Gemma lights up. She becomes more animated and her passion clearly shines through. I believe

she was born to help people who suffer with this cruel condition. I wanted to write this introduction, because if you, the reader, are suffering from an eating disorder or you are a parent or partner watching a loved one struggle, then I cannot stress this enough; please reach out to Gemma and her team at Cortijo Care as they could really make a difference.

Gemma Wood, is the Head of Counselling & Psychotherapy at the newly opened Medical and Psychological clinic, Cortijo Care, based in San Pedro.

P

eople often ask me why I wanted to specialise in eating disorders. It is something about which I am very passionate, both personally and professionally. It is close to my heart and I feel blessed that my job is working with something I that care so much about.

or emotional distress and result in an obsessive relationship with food. Having the ability to control the amount of, or type of food consumed can make a sufferer believe they are coping with their problems, thus allowing them to block out painful feelings.

One of my life goals is to change people’s perceptions of this disease. It is seen as more acceptable to have a drug or alcohol addiction, than to suffer from anorexia. Many still believe it is a ‘phase’ and the person will grow out of it. I want people to understand that an eating disorder is an illness and one that needs treating. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. In fact, up to 20 per cent of people will die from complications or suicide if left untreated.

An eating disorder is often referred to as an additional part by the sufferer; it is quite often the case that someone who is suffering from anorexia or bulimia can develop an auditory voice that is controlling their behaviour, mood and life. A lot of people that suffer from either of these disorders describe the voice as a “he” or “she”, sometimes even naming it. The voice is the eating disorder that becomes the sufferer’s way to survive, its friend and its enemy.

An eating disorder is an expression of internal suffering. It is a psychological illness that manifests itself physically. An eating disorder is not a choice, nor a passion. Eating disorders are illnesses that stem from psychological and/

40

There are several main diagnosed eating disorders and each is defined by specific signs and symptoms. They are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder (BED), Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS), Obesity. Obesity has only recently been

recognised as an eating disorder, having previously been recognised only as a medical condition. Eating disorders often go hand in hand with other additions. Many sufferers will also be self-harming or have some form of OCD. It is never just a straight forward diagnosis. For example some people with bulimia will not vomit, but will take laxatives or over-exercise. Just because bulimia does not cause the extreme weight loss that anorexia does, it does not mean that it is less serious. This is why it is important that family members do not try and self diagnose. If you suspect a loved one has an eating disorder, seek medical advice before confronting them as this could simply make the situation worse.

DEALING WITH CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS It is very common for young people to strive to be something that others want them to be or what may be

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR perceived as ‘what other’s want them to be’, losing their identity of who they really are and who they really want to become. Seeking approval from adults and peers can dictate a young person’s perception of themselves. Young people yearn for protection, love, understanding and safe boundaries even though this may often appear the last thing they desire. Often this desire is camouflaged by their external behaviours. This can potentially make being a parent even harder as parents may feel isolated and confused, their understanding of their child’s needs contradicted by his or her behaviour. In my experience the percentage of eating disorders in children and young people is constantly rising. It would appear that over the last 10 years the increase in eating disorders has risen. There does seem to be more awareness, help and support around the subject, yet finding professional support can still appear very difficult.

Children and young people seem to be more exposed to life influences, possibly leaving them more vulnerable to change. People of all ages (not just children and young people) could be more susceptible to life’s difficulties and rely on an eating disorder to cope. This could be influenced by their physical, emotional and personality make-up. External/ internal life experiences seem to have a great influence on a person who may develop an Eating Disorder, as does someone’s personality structure. A combination of these may leave someone more susceptible.

TREATMENT As a Person-Centred therapist, I believe it is imperative to approach

There are many reasons behind the development of eating disorders. Factors could include (but are not limited to): personality traits (being a perfectionist,) development, genetic factors, early puberty, family attitudes and systems, negative family influences, high levels of external/internal expectations, cultural pressures, sport/dance, social problems, abuse/traumatic events, major illnesses, hormonal abnormalities, difficulty coping with change, self-esteem, spiritual or religious influences, confidence and worth, self-acceptance, media and other psychiatric illnesses combined.

We offer four stages: Acute 24 hour care, rehabilitation, independent living and aftercare. Every treatment plan is different and adapted to the degree of weight loss; we are working with specialists in the UK and Spain to take clients with very low BMIs.

Professional and personal experience has taught me to always hold hope for every client. I believe and have witnessed, that it is possible to be “cured” from suffering with an eating disorder. As mentioned previously, the eating disorder is the symptom, not the cause. I believe that if the sufferer has the opportunity to work through the issues that have created the disorder, they can fully recover over time.

9.8 per cent of female students had problems with alcohol, 8 per cent had problems with drugs, and 7.8 per cent had problems with eating disorders.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE?

At Cortijo Care an individual is able to receive the most comprehensive treatment possible to overcome their eating disorder in a respectful understanding manner with full medical care and a team of specialist eating disorder therapists and nurses, enabling them to deal with any issues in a safe and secure environment, aided by experienced professionals and a qualified team that offers an individual approach to their mental well-being.

CAN AN EATING DISORDER EVER BE CURED?

Anorexia is the third most common chronic illness in adolescent females. Eating disorders in schools are almost as prevalent as alcohol and drug abuse:

86 per cent of people report their eating disorder started before the age of 20, 10 per cent report it started at 10 years old and younger, 33 per cent report it started between the ages of 11 and 15, and 43 per cent report it started between the ages of 16 and 20.

say. Over time the aim is to help the healthy self become stronger than the eating disorder self.

Please note that eating disorders each case individually, tailoring each client’s treatment plan to their own specific needs. Being client led means offering the core elements to each person to help them feel heard, listened to, understood and validated. I also bring many other tools into my client relationships to facilitate the learning for change, such as focusing orientated therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, mindfulness, thinking beyond, the Sodna Method, and Emotional Freedom Techniques (also known as Tapping Therapy). When working with patients with eating disorders, I believe it is very important to be able to validate both the healthy self and the eating disorder self, allowing plenty of room where necessary to listen to what “it” has to

have the highest mortality rate of any mental health illness. The quicker the sufferer can access understanding support, the more hopeful their future may be. A splash of colour brightened up a wintry January day in Mijas as Dutch artist Xandra de Vos presented her new collection of abstract expressionist paintings. Guests enjoyed a glass of champagne and Ferrero Rocher chocolates as they meandered through the historic Casa de Museo, viewing the artist’s latest works. Xandra’s vivid oil on canvas collection encompasses every shade of the colour spectrum; paintings are for sale but also for rent for businesses and homes. I

Love your Home By Hayley Reed, Founder of Foc Design

always find that Valentine’s Day evokes mixed feelings. It arrives so soon after all the expense of Christmas, the weather is still temperamental and then there are the thousands of pessimists reminding you at every given moment that it is a commercially fabricated holiday that only benefits the big stores and florists (and of course the lucky people who receive the flowers and that soppy card from their secret admirer!) If you are lucky enough to have someone taking this date as the opportunity to remind you how much you mean to them, then I suggest you ignore all those

killjoys and enjoy this special day wholeheartedly. My advice to those still looking for love is, do not feel that this day is only for those lovesick couples canoodling in the corner. Following the end of the festive season, our homes look a little bare after the removal of the Christmas tree and perhaps in need of a bit more love since the departure of all the family. Why not take this opportunity to love your house? Small additions can make all the difference and won’t break the bank, but will give your home that lift it might need. Here are some ideas of how to show your abode just how much you love it!

Combining decoration and delicate accessories with lighting, these lamps are eye-catchingly gorgeous. Available in chrome and gold with a selection of sculpted tassels and a choice of different lampshades, you can personalise them to fit any colour scheme and to compliment any style of interior. These Indian inspired parasols add the perfect romantic touch to any garden or terrace. Available in various colours and with optional hand painted pattern on the fabric, these shade-makers are handmade and edged with hand-carved mother-of-pearl hearts and beads. The umbrella’s canopy is made from hard wearing polyester which looks and feels like cotton. Underneath the garden umbrella a thick handspun cotton weave covers the bamboo inner workings. The umbrella’s finial and wooden pole is hand-carved and painted by skilled artisans. The love and care put into each of these is obvious and brings even the blandest of terraces to life. These timeless exterior lamps are all the delicate detail you need to create a romantic mood at a click of a switch. The Japanese inspired floral stamp that allows the light to escape is then projected onto any surface with which it comes into contact, creating a stunning floral pattern repeat in a soft warm white (or any colour you choose - just change the bulb!)

The 1900 chair forms part of the French tradition of romantic parks, gardens and bandstands, but this stunning chair also incorporates modern-day ergonomic and practical elements. Thanks to a redesign a little over 10 years ago it is now foldable and more comfortable. This steel rod chair is hand forged into rolls and scrolls, complete with perforated decorated base and finished in an anti-UV powder coating that is available in over 24 different harmonious colours. Swing chairs, dining tables and matching carver dining chairs are all part of the collection that can add a touch of romantic bliss to alfresco living. favourites 2014

Moroso is one of my weak spots! Not only does it consistently create fabulous designs but its quality is sublime. Since 1952 MOROSO has been designing its sofas, armchairs and accessories with well-known designers such as Ron Arad, Carlo Colombo, Enrico Franzolini, Marc Newson, Toshiyuki Kita and Patricia Urquiola. Let’s begin with this exquisite sofa design Gentry by Patricia Urquiola

74

GENTRY

HOME COUTURE

This new sofa, designed by Patricia Urquiola, fosters a return to industrial design’s capacity for technical and aesthetic creation of products destined for the retail market. The collection’s strength is its basic simplicity, which imbues it with character and modernity yet, at the same time, its silhouette has the added attractively graceful touch of a gentle arch in the frame to ensure the right structural balance of solidity and absence. With large, soft cushions making it exceptionally comfortable, Gentry sofa’s discreet personality enables it to blend perfectly into any interior décor or setting.

MASSAS

Blocks blunted by the cutting of an imaginary blade. The geometric order is broken, overtaken by a movement, a margin that crosses the boundaries. The faces reveal the ribbing; some stitches, as visible as tacking, describe it while others are far less visible. The use is free, the surface soft. The external shape, from the viewpoint of volume, appears independent from the structure and from the filling. With its modular system, each element maintains an independent character in terms of function and sculptural presence.

MY BEAUTIFUL BACKSIDE Nipa Doshi Jonathan Levien My Beautiful Backside is a collection of seats whose backrests are a composition of highly coloured, floating cushions in various shapes. The use of oversized symbols, such as the buttons on cushion backs, provide a means of customising each chair, making it unique, just as you would add little distinguishing touches to an article of clothing. My Beautiful Backside has a lacquered wood base frame with large cushions fixed to it to form the backrest. The cushions are covered with Indian textiles and decorated with very large, extremely beautiful buttons. Fabrics include silk and cotton and a Kvadrat wool cloth, designed by Giulio Ridolfo, which is woven like an Indian silk, the warp and weft are of two different colours. Each fabric is hand-embroidered in brilliant colours.

REDONDO Patricia Urquiola

Redondo’s curved shapes are accentuated by the complete absence of corners and by the soft fabric, chosen to offer sensory stimulation and embellished with a quilted decoration in which the thread, like a pencil, draws elegant three-dimensional geometries.

MADAME DAKAR Patricia Urquiola, Birsel+Seck Moroso started using a hand-weaving technique employing the plastic threads traditionally used for making fish nets. This created the success of Tord Boontje’s Shadowy collection. The same technique is now used by Bibi Seck and Ayse Birsel who created a wide range of attractive, softly rounded products, such as Madame

Dakar, an enormous armchair as enveloping as a hammock. Then there’s Patricia Urquiola’s “bench” that sits on the sand like a tree trunk, accompanied by a smaller, single-seat twin and by a low table. The items in the collection are craft pieces: each product is unique and differences in the colours and in the weaves are not to be considered defects.

I hope you have enjoyed these fabulous designs as much as I have. More on marvellous Moroso still to come in April’s issue! Tel. 952 788 691 info@ambiencehomedesign.com ambiencehomedesign.com 76

The whole aspect of the space was busy and worn. We spoke to designer Andrea Böck: “The brief from our clients was to furnish the whole apartment with a contemporary and elegant style throughout. The client wanted taupes and greys as the base palate with touches of colour and together we carefully chose large statement pieces to evoke elegance and space. We then proceeded to repaint all the walls and wardrobes in the apartment, all

and dining area with pure glamour, the epitome of luxury for the feet. For the lounge, an L-shaped sofa - upholstered in a durable neutral grey fabric divides the study from the living space and, for a touch of sparkle, beautiful crystalized charolite, soft lilac and white cushions add a splash of colour. As a backdrop, Andrea chose celestial mirrored radial cluster lights. An extra wide cubic armchair was made to measure for the client’s comfort, upholstered in charcoal velvet, with stud detail. Ambience also reupholstered the ottoman in luminous deep velvet. “We wanted to give the master bedroom a lush and open feel. We chose silver satin for the capitoné headboard enhanced by Carlucci’s beautiful striped wallpaper. On either side of the bed French romantic mirrors were placed to add drama and depth behind Kudu horn lamps brought from

To introduce deeper tones and complete the look, we chose a jazzy zigzag pattern for the voiles and a large tub chair with geometrical circular pattern in the wood.” In the second bedroom, Ambience chose an extra large rectangular padded headboard in a shimmery-grey two-tone woven fabric, a velvet throw, plus patterned and textured cushions

“In the third bedroom we opted for industrialchic décor, with a beige colour palate contrasted by blacks and chromes...” Ambience chose large nickel pearl ring lamps to sit on top of reclaimed bedside tables, and a beautiful armchair by Munna, upholstered in a delicate and irregular chevron woven soft chenille yarn fabric by Zinc. “In the third bedroom we opted for industrial-chic décor, with a beige colour palate contrasted by blacks and chromes. For this we chose dark trunk side tables, adjustable chrome lamps and linen subtle pin upholstery on the headboard to soften the look and add a fresh and natural texture to the room. The cushion design used multiple fabrics to enhance the design, by adding braided trims and ripple effect bands across in vertical and horizontal directions. The armchair is also upholstered in linen with a metal stud border for a classic touch. Finally, we restored and repainted the sideboard in a putty grey satin finish and added a black and white retro artwork above it.”

to tie in with some of the artwork that was already there.

Textured cushions in charcoals and silvers and Zinc’s beautiful Shadow Mountain fur dress the bed exquisitely. We also reupholstered the ornate endof-bed bench in a metallic fabric.

A pair of bulbous square ottomans sits at the end of the bed, upholstered in a mushroom-silver faux leather, to complete the bed ensemble.

TORQUE TALK

Our in-depth motoring review

TORQUE TALK

Small car, big engine. The new V12 Vantage S is now even more the rebel.

83

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the ASTON MARTIN V12 VANTAGE S Like Porsche, Aston Martin has mastered the art of creating cars of distinctively different flavours from a set of basic ingredients. In the case of the original V12 Vantage, these ingredients involved marrying their smallest car to their largest engine, and then turning the volume up to 11. Launched in 2009, the first generation manual gearbox only V12 Vantage was widely acclaimed as a hard-core driving machine, scoring top marks for looks, power, handling and soundtrack as well as sheer panache. Compared to its suave but relatively tame V8 Vantage sibling, the V12’s pimped appearance more than subtly hinted at the power under its long bonnet. If anything, that long bonnet with its carbon-fibre cooling vents, integrated ‘ducktail’ spoiler, lower ride height and wider wheels gave it an air of menace not present in the V8 models.

84

The car also had a very different image from its bigger brothers with which it shared its charismatic V12 power unit, and in terms of raw character, the V12 Vantage was something of a rough diamond with exotic charm. Like the rebellious child of a noble family who was forced to endure public school, it had an inherently rumbustious nature lurking not far below the surface. Compared to the smooth gentleman’s sporting carriages that make up the bulk of the Aston Martin range, the V12 Vantage had the demeanour of a thug in a Savile Row suit.

The new V12 Vantage S maintains the visual cues of its predecessor that mark it out as the Evil Twin of the V8 Vantage. Now the oldest model in the Aston Martin range, the cabin of the Vantage looks and feels smaller, and more cramped. The counterpoint is that its more compact overall dimensions give the feeling that you can wear it like a cosy pair of shoes for close dancing on a sinuous road. By all accounts, these are driving shoes that can set fire to the tarmac. While the gen one V12 Vantage was fast in absolute terms, compared to German machinery with smaller displacement turbocharged V8’s, its big V12 felt

TORQUE TALK

The V12 Vantage is one of those machines that threatens to blow the grouting from the walls of a tunnel on full noise. lacking in real steam until the rev counter needle had passed 4,000rpm. The variable valve timing system that debuted with the revised AM11 V12 last year has cracked that nut. When I drove the revised DB9 last year, it was immediately apparent that the revised V12 at last had the torque to match the promise of its 6.0 litre displacement.

With 565bhp at 6,750rpm and 620Nm of torque peaking at 5,750rpm, the revised V12 motor is cooking with gas from much lower down in the rev band, and goes like a scalded cat from there. The gain of 70Nm at 1,000rpm over the old motor alone makes a palpable difference to the cars subjective and objective performance. With no

torque converter losses to content with, the full might of the V12 motor in this relatively smaller car, which tips the scales at 1,665kg, (56kg more than the V8 Vantage S) feels like it is singlehandedly able to spin the globe faster when you nail the throttle in the lower gears. Aston Martin claim an impressive 3.9 sec for the 0-100km/h sprint. That is fast

85

TORQUE TALK

in anyone’s books, and especially so for a car whose nose heavy rearwheel-drive configuration leaves it with a built-in traction problem off the line. At the other end of the scale, the top speed of 328km/h, or 205mph, gives the V12 Vantage S membership of the 200mph club, for which no other current production Aston Martin is eligible. Driving it back-to-back with a Vanquish, with which it shares the more powerful version of the AM11 V12 motor (compared to the 510bhp DB9), the 81kg weight difference in favour of the Vantage S was quite apparent, though not as significant as the different transmissions that transfer power to the rear axle. One of the charms of the original V12 Vantage was its six-speed manual gearbox, whose slightly heavy clutch and rifle bolt quality shifter made it a red-blooded drivers’ car par excellence. In their efforts to give this secondgeneration car wider appeal, especially in the US and Far East markets, Aston Martin has substituted the manual gearbox for a paddle shift operated automated manual transmission. There is not much to criticise with the six-speed torque convertor automatic that performs such sterling service in the DB9 and Vanquish. It is a smooth, rapid and cultured device that even blips the throttle on downshifts to help the most laid back driver sound like a hero. In comparison, the new sevenspeed Sportshift III automated manual transmission that swaps the cogs in the V12 Vantage S is quite a different animal. While it is responsible for far less power loss than the automatic, like all transmission of its ilk, it has issues endemic to its breed that no amount of fettling can cure.

I had dropped my window on the way in, and the glorious V12 soundtrack, amplified hugely by the tunnel walls, came back at us like the full starting grid at Le Mans. It was a truly orgasmic experience for a car enthusiast of any stripes. 86

Stepping out of the Vanquish, with its silky smooth automatic transmission, the operation of the automated manual in the V12 Vantage feels like a throw back a decade in time and technical progress. Where the Touchtronic 2 six-speed, torque convertor automatic allows you to trickle away from rest with minimal throttle and VIP chauffeur smoothness, the Sportshift

III automated manual requires a firm throttle foot to launch in normal driving. This makes it clunky and hard to modulate with inch perfect accurately in low speed manoeuvring.

TORQUE TALK

To their credit, Aston Martin’s engineers have done a good job on the control software of the Sportshift III, to the point where normal upshifts are now quite smooth, especially if the driver helps the process with a slight anticipatory throttle lift to lessen the torque loading. However, when you ram through a full throttle upshift without lifting, the physical jolt and obvious impact on the drivetrain harks back to the good old, bad old days of the BMW SMG, Ferrari F1 and Lamborghini e-gear kick-in-the-back syndrome. While shifting is noticeably better than any of those older cars in all areas of operation, with the advent of faster and seamless dual-clutch transmissions, the system feels out of step with the rest of the well honed drivetrain. In the absence of a dualclutch gearbox, Aston should have stuck with the manual gearbox for such a hard-core machine. I am a big fan of ‘tunnel cars’, that is cars whose engine note sounds like Armageddon when unleashed in a tunnel. The V12 Vantage is one of those machines that threatens to blow the grouting from the walls of a tunnel on full noise. And even the wide treads of the Pirelli PZero Corsa trackday rear tyres were no match for the 620Nm of torque when I nailed the throttle in second gear at 50km/h. On a perfectly dry road, the sticky 295/30ZR19 rear tyres lit up as the little Aston hurtled through the tunnel about 10-degrees sideways, with its tail on fire. I had dropped my window on the way in, and the glorious V12 soundtrack, amplified hugely by the tunnel walls, came back at us like the full starting grid at Le Mans. It was a truly orgasmic experience for a car enthusiast of any stripes. Aston Martin’s engineers have done an astonishing job on the steering and chassis. In a world of electric power steering systems that vary between excellent and awful, their old school hydraulic assistance is a paragon of weight and feedback.

87

TORQUE TALK

In a world full of spectacular looking mid-engined supercars, the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S is an old school muscle car with its own unique brand of charm.

The balance between input and chassis reaction is well-nigh perfect, and while the cars relatively short wheelbase might seem like a recipe for twitchiness, all is well here. The car answers the helm in a direct, yet smooth and progressive manner, the rear axle following the nose into a bend on cue, with outstanding balance and seat of the pants feel. The other pleasant surprise is the ride quality. While the big 255/35ZR19 and 295/30ZR19 Pirellis on 9.0J and 11.0J x 19 forged alloys and lowered suspension hint at a trackday stiff ride, in practice, the uprated springs and dampers are so perfectly matched, the supple low speed secondary ride actually caught me by surprise. You can feel the suspension start to work as you pick up speed, and it revels in being loaded up in the bends where the car corners flat and valiantly resists being upset by mid-corner bumps. The suppleness that facilitates

88

this dynamic stability once again underlines how important a decent level of compliance is on real world roads. Returning from my drive, I sat in the V12 Vantage for a few minutes contemplating the significance of this car. While its cabin might be a step behind the new Vanquish and DB9 in generational terms, it still exudes a level of detail design and choice of materials that make it feel special in a way that its competitors cannot match. In a world full of spectacular looking mid-engined supercars, the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S is an old school muscle car with its own unique brand

of charm. It is one of those cars that you might sometimes even just sit in as a retreat from the world or a moment of tranquillity, even if you don’t start the engine. However, should you insert the electronic key in the dashboard and push, you had better be prepared to stay out on the open road for a while, giving your big grin muscles a good workout! Thanks to Aston Martin Singapore for the test car. Dealer in Marbella: Salamanca

A Love Affair

Wine

with

By Amber O’Shaughnessy Photos by Kateryna Lytvin

This month SOCIETY MARBELLA gained exclusive access to one of the most highly anticipated new venues of recent times – D-wine.

“This is totally unique”, enthuses Francisco, “Nowhere in the Spain can you try as many special wines by the glass”

O

pening this month, D-wine will play host to one of the most extensive collections of wine in the whole of Spain with over 70,000 bottles and 3,000 different labels all scored with 90 plus points from world renowned wine expert Robert Parker and Spain’s José Peñin and from every region of the country. Francisco, one of the D-wine sommeliers, met with our Features Editor to give an insight into what this innovative and exciting new venture is all about. It would be difficult for even the most dedicated beer drinker to remain unmoved by wine when walking through the doors of D-wine and being met with the enthusiasm and passion of its staff. “We want to be different” Francisco tells us, “We want to take time with each individual customer to show them all that is great about Spanish wine; when to drink a certain wine and with which accompaniment. We want to spread our passion for wine.” Displaying his extensive experience of the world of fine wine, Francisco starts our tour in the most exclusive section of the venue. The walls are

92

lined with the very best wine cellars, meticulously set at optimum humidity and temperature and storing the most sought after and exquisite labels in Spain, and the world. These include the rarest bottles and vertical collections of renowned Pingus, Vina Tondonia,Clos Erasmus, L’Ermita and Vega Sicilia as well as lesser-known wines, which will take even the most experienced wine drinkers by surprise. There is a large central tasting bench, which will give centre stage to Spanish winemakers delivering presentations, wine experts giving technical wine classes, wine tasting sessions and all manner of wine related activities. A terrace lounge provides a place for guests to relax and enjoy a Cognac, fine Rum and of course special wines while reading their way through D-wine’s collection of Spanish wine and gastronomic gems. Last but by no means least, a wine dispenser system. This pioneering piece of equipment dispenses high-end wines by the glass at the swipe of a card. The dispenser system is also available at a number of areas throughout the D-wine venue to allow up to a maximum of 32 wines to be available to taste by the glass.

We leave the big name wine labels behind and head over to the next section of the premises, which boasts over a thousand different wines that are specifically chosen because they provide excellent value for money. These bottles are more averagely priced yet still possess excellent flavours and, of course, those special Parker and Peñin Point’s which signify the superb quality of the label. “The essence in this area is high quality and good prices,” Francisco tells me. Onto the third area of D-wine, which showcases the country’s best vintages and is enclosed within glass walls in order to monitor humidity and temperature levels. The labels here are organized in verticals, which is very unusual in Spain. A customer could purchase a collection of bottles of any winery from past years till the actual one to contrast and compare the different flavours through time. There are also magnums, double magnums and bottles of up to 18 litres available to purchase, perfect for a dinner party of 20 guests or more. As we marvel at the scope of this venture, Francisco reveals still more services. “We can also help individuals who want to create their own wine cellar at home,” Francisco suggests. “So if somebody comes into the store and says I want a cellar of around 300 bottles all priced around the

“Nowhere in Spain can you try as many special wines by the glass.”

€30 mark, we can advise them on what labels to buy and when to drink specific bottles in the collection at their absolute best.” It seems the sky really is the limit at D-wine. We end our tour in the restaurant and terrace area, which comfortably seats 100 people (140 could be accommodated but the D-wine team want guests to feel relaxed and special). The restaurant will offer Spanish and Japanese cuisine by head chef Kengo Tomita and his team, using the very best local ingredients all of which will of course be paired with a recommended wine. The terrace is suitable for both summer and winter with its state-ofthe-art pergola, heating for winter months and vapour cooling system for the warmest months . It is the ideal place to hook up with a group of good friends and the most delectable of wines, chosen with the unobtrusive help of one of the sommeliers.

“We are happy to learn together,” he says as he walks us to the door, “This place is dynamic, and we would like to invite everyone to be a part of it”.

Overwhelmed by the many facets of this new establishment, we thank Francisco who will undoubtedly make it his mission to welcome and educate everyone who crosses the D-wine threshold, from the most amateur of wine drinkers to the greatest expert.

Top Table

AT TOP THAI RESTAURANT Reviewed by Amber O’Shaughnessy

A

trip to Thailand is always a popular choice at the start of the New Year for those seeking to escape the cooler Andalusian days and get a fix of winter sun. Unfortunately, not all of us can afford to spend the money or time away from our daily business. So what better way to transport you to the exotic

96

pastures of South East Asia than a top Thai meal? And we kid you not, the food at new restaurant Top Thai in Centro Plaza is so authentic that if you close your eyes, you can almost imagine yourself sitting on a busy street in Bangkok or at a beach bar in Koh Phi Phi, looking out on an expanse of glistening aquamarine water.

So on a miserable January day in Marbella we headed into Top Thai to indulge in some delectable foreign delights. As is always the way when eating in a group, the best way to proceed is with a sharing platter starter and Top Thai’s version, which included Prawn Toast, Spring Roll with Chicken, Beef and Chicken Satay Skewers and

COSTA CUISINE Main courses finished and with just enough room for a sweet, we thought it wrong not to go for at least a couple of desserts. The Mango and Sticky Rice was splendid, while the Cold Fruit Platter was refreshing and thirst quenching. Then the godfather of all desserts – Banana Fritters coated in honey and served with creamy vanilla ice cream provided the perfect finish. The crispy fritter encasing the soft banana was a match made in heaven. So with the final slurp of Strawberry Daiquiri – yes, Top Thai also serves up exotic cocktails with the most flamboyant of fruit decorations - we had to be reminded that we were, in fact, still in Southern Spain. We did not need a tuk tuk to get home nor Prawn Spring Rolls did not disappoint. The assortment of dips accompanying the platter perfectly complimented the crispy starter bites, the chicken spring roll served with a honey dip was particularly popular and caused a bit of a ruckus when it came down to deciding who deserved the last one. Dishes cleared and the chicken spring roll dispute settled, we moved on eagerly to the main event. I opted for a Red Thai Curry with Prawns, which was served with Sticky Rice. With every mouthful I was treated to a large juicy prawn, sweet cherry tomato and fragrant lychee, all soaked in the exquisite red curry soup. Another Thai classic – Tom Kha Gai - was ordered by one of my dining partners; bathed in a creamy coconut sauce, the chicken in this dish was deliciously tender. Others in the group decided on Grilled King Prawns with Thai Sauce, which was a delicious blend of chili and lime and made the perfect partner for the tasty prawns. But ultimate food envy was granted to one lucky individual on the table when his main course arrived – Ped Top Thai. This roasted duck option was a mouth-watering combination of soft meat and crispy skin, dished up

with a honey and tamarind sauce. And finally (we couldn’t resist) we ordered the staple dish, Pad Thai to share among us. Rich in ingredients, the egg noodles, crunchy vegetables, prawns, crushed peanuts and lime were coated in a sweet tamarind sauce.

was a deep-sea dive planned for the following morning, but our meal at least was the closest we had come to being on the Asian continent this year, so for that we congratulate you Top Thai.

Bhavesh and Rajvi enjoyed a magical three day celebration filled with fun, family and friendship.

MEANT TO BE…

We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. Who would have known that 17 years later, I would be married to him!

ings

Two years later, we had been well acquainted with each other’s family and friends and we had been on a few holidays together and we were definitely ready to take the next step in our relationship. It was just a case of him popping the question. Last September we

went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do.

It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had Michknown ael and each other. He then sudMelanie two day denly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I marr celeb ied in ration family, a elega turned around to surro see what he was friend nt unded s by their pointing at,and andson, as I looked Dexte down, a light shone on to the rocksr.

We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.

I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

After the sounds of the Spanish guitar and a few champagne cocktails later, guests were ushered to the reception on the outdoor terrace surrounded by olive trees with suspended Chinese lanterns and wicker hearts. Surprises for our guests, and our selves, were ‘wow’ factors starting with flamenco dancing, speeches and performances from our loved ones to large glow sticks on our entrance, a live bongo player over a UK DJ spinning the best beats and then a firework finale.

Redline Company joins Save the Children 1000 Club Redline Company, an award winning design and marketing agency in Marbella which recently updated its strapline to ‘the agency with the big heart’, has signed up to the ‘Save the Children 1000 Club’ corporate charity scheme and urges others to follow suit. Redline’s association with children’s charities dates back several years providing marketing services free of charge to the local branch, but this year they have upped their contribution. By signing up to the Save the Children Club 1000 corporate programme Redline Company pledges a fixed annual sum, which is vital in order for the charity to plan ahead. With an international staff and clients from different countries, it made sense for Redline to choose a charity that doesn’t recognise borders; the funds raised are used to give disadvantaged children throughout the world lifesaving assistance and the chance of a better life – with 78% spent on projects, 11.9% on business

development and just 10% on administration. Redline Company is committed to transparent business practices and social responsibility, particularly in today’s current climate where businesses need to work together in order to be more profitable and to benefit the local community. If you would like to contribute to Save the Children visit the website at: savethechildren.net For more information about Redline Company’s marketing services please visit the website at: redlinecompany.com.

Let the Screening Programmes commence.... The 2014 Positively Pink & Positively Blue screening programmes will commence on Tuesday the 11th of February. Positively Pink and Positively Blue are the Mijas based charities aimed at raising the necessary funds to provide education, support and a free breast or prostate / testicular screening for British men and women living on the Costa del Sol. For the ladies, Positively Pink offers a comprehensive (Gold Standard) screening process that includes a consultation, physical examination, health education as well as a mammogram or ultrasound - in some cases both. As well as this, ladies will also receive a translation into English of the results. For the men, Positively Blue offers a free consultation and PSA blood test as well as education and awareness on how to self examine. Both screening programmes are carried out in conjunction with Clinica Medicare in La Cala de Mijas. Lorraine Palmer, the founder of both Positively Pink and Positively Blue, continues to believe that “early detection is your best protection”. She

would like to thank everyone who continues to support the charities, from a small team of volunteers to those who have attend the programmes and made a donation through local businesses. Host with the Most Beach House Welcome Pancho Campo through their Doors for Talk Radio Show

The Beach House hosted a Talk Radio show this month with Spanish Master of Wine, Pancho Campo. Pancho, founder of The Wine Academy, organizes monthly luncheons with some of the Costa del Sol’s most acclaimed experts in food, drink, hospitality and education. These meetings involve a discussion around a general topic while different bottles of wine and dishes are enjoyed and recommended. The Beach House, located on a beautiful stretch of coastline in Elviria, played the ultimate host, providing some scrumptious cuisine for guests Emilio Clausell from the International Wine Club, Mike Davies (head of the American Club of the Costa del Sol), Adrian Butler from the American College of Marbella and Gary Waite (owner of Nueva Campana Restaurant). After organizing his very own Burns Night in January Guy McCrow, who owns the Beach House, treated the group to some traditional Scottish dishes including a Scottish Broth, Cullen Skink, Chicken stuffed with Haggis with a Whisky Cream sauce and Neeps and Tatties. Pancho was there to impress and educate with his wealth of wine knowledge. He served a bottle of Alsace Risling from 2011 and the strong flavours of this wine perfectly complimented the salmon amuse-bouche; this was followed by a taste of 2012 Galician Valdesil. Red wine offerings at the luncheon included a label from The Beach House’s own wine list, the Unnum rioja from 2008 as well as a merlot recommended by Pancho, the

120

2009 Magana from Navarra. A delectable bottle of Vino de la Naranja, a dessert wine from Huelva, concluded the meal. The sweet orange flavour was delicious, causing the majority of guests around the table to request a second glass. As good food and wine were consumed, the group chatted about all manner of issues, but principally the ways in which Marbella can attract more tourism in 2014. As in every good discussion, contrasting opinions were voiced. Adrian believed the lifeline for tourism lies in opening up new flight routes to Málaga from the Middle East, while Gary proposed smarter

marketing as the answer. The topic sparked an interesting conversation for the duration of the meal. The entire discussion will be aired on Talk Radio very soon; check out Pancho Campo’s facebook page at facebook. com/pancho.campo to find out when you can tune into the show. We would like to thank The Beach House and most specifically its owner Guy McCrow for providing the group with a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and wish them luck in upcoming events including their Cuban Mojito Party.
