PUBLISHER’S LETTER

April

YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE WELCOME! Right, get your party gear on because this is the time of year when the season gets under way. Forget about the dodgy weather that we’ve been having and blow the dust off your glad-rags because this is where the party starts. If you like a party then you and our cover girl will get on like a house on fire because Holly Willoughby – along with her This Morning co-presenter, Philip Schofield – has never made a secret of her love of a top bash. Of course, there’s far more to Holly than her love of a good time. As the whole world of entertainment seems to have become embroiled in the gender pay-gap scandal she recently managed to negotiate herself a payrise to achieve parity with Schofield. Don’t be fooled by that fluffy blonde exterior, folks – this is one sharp woman. We are about to welcome the arrival of the so-called Season, a time in which debutantes traditionally tried to hook an aristocratic husband and were presented at Court. How things have changed! Today the Season is generally agreed to begin in April and end in August, including such annual events as Ascot and the Henley Royal Regatta. Of course, it’s not just the UK that has a Season these days – Marbella’s is marked by the opening of the many beach clubs that stretch along our Coast, for instance. In any case, it’s a cause for celebration, so choose a hat and open the champagne! Ian Greenland always has an interesting opinion that he’s happy to share with us and

this month he discusses the notion of bingewatching TV series. If T.S. Eliot thought that the world would end with a whimper rather than a bang, then Ian obviously thinks that we have a good chance of entering the mouth of the apocalypse while saying, “Just one more episode of Better Call Saul and then you’ll have my full attention!” And now, if TV companies are thinking in terms of the box set rather than a weekly series, how are they going to keep producing quality products? It’s a real conundrum and, from the comfort of his settee, Ian wonders how the future of our TV watching will develop. Ian Kuah test drives the new Audi A8 and has concluded that it really is Lord of the Rings. Matt Roberts has been offering some great advice for those of you who are obsessed with being beach ready for the summer and this month he’s concentrating on the back of the thighs, so if you want to look great in your Speedos or bikini, you know where to turn. Sam Owen focusses on keeping your relationship on track while Jonathan Yeadon turns his attention to who was a hairdo hit on the red carpet during the recent awards season – and who was a definite miss. March also marked the start of the events season - were you snapped at any of the ones that we feature in this issue? We are also delighted to profile the beautiful new Benalús development on Marbella’s internationally renowned Milla de Oro. It just goes to show that this is still one of the premier places in the world to buy property, especially if you’re hoping for a five-star lifestyle. Have a great April! ‘Til next time… Andy Clark

A Whole Bunch of

Holly! Fans say that Holly Willoughby’s success is due to her relaxed, unforced presenting manner while those who remain unconvinced prefer to claim that she has learned to make a little go a very long way. Whatever the reason, it’s difficult to switch on the TV these days without seeing her ‘exceptionally good-looking girlnext-door’ face. But who is she - and how did she manage to be one of the most omnipresent women on contemporary TV? By Kj Elsdon

orn on the 10th of February 1981 to Brian, a sales manager for a double-glazing company and his wife Linda, a former air stewardess, Holly’s early life with her parents and her older sister Kelly was a comfortable, middle-class existence. West Sussex proved a happy, relaxed place and Holly’s schooling took place at the independent Burgess Hill Girls School and, later, at the College of Richard Collyer in Horsham. At the age of 14 Holly was spotted by a talent scout working for The Clothes Show Live Exhibition and she was soon signed up by the internationally renowned Storm Model Management agency. Naturally, being signed this young by a company with such a sterling reputation meant that the young Holly soon found that she suddenly had a career to pursue alongside her school work. Appearances in teenage magazines such as Mizz, Just Seventeen, Shout and More! meant that the world began to be aware of the unique Willoughby charm. In 1998 she also started work as an underwear model for companies, including Pretty Polly and

THERE WERE TIMES WHEN WE WENT STRAIGHT FROM THE HOTEL BAR TO GOING LIVE ON AIR AT 6AM. IT DOESN'T HELP WHEN YOU READ THE SCRIPT AND FIND YOU'VE GOT TO DRINK ANCHOVIES IN CUSTARD WITH SOME 8-YEAR-OLD. THAT DAY I WAS SICK LIVE ON TV. was seen on billboards all over Britain. Her TV career took off in 2000 after she won an audition for S Club TV on ITV’s children’s network in which, along with some other youngsters, she represented an alternative version of the pop band S Club 7. She also played a character called Zoe in an offshoot, entitled S Club 7: Artistic Differences and, to prove that she was also prepared to work hard, found employment as a receptionist and a runner for a shopping channel. Whatever your opinion of Holly Willoughby, one thing is certain – here is a woman who isn’t afraid of hard work. For a while she took on a series of unrewarding jobs to support herself financially while she undertook a psychotherapy course via the Open University but then opportunity finally knocked when a showbiz agent, impressed by a showreel she had made with the assistance of a friend, contacted the BBC on her behalf and petitioned for work.

By the end of 2000 (an especially auspicious year) Holly had landed the job of presenting Xchange, a factual entertainment programme aimed at youngsters and her easy, unforced style led BBC bosses to recommend her for further duties, including CBBC at the Fame Academy, an adolescent offshoot of Fame Academy, the BBC’s take on that popular Spanish staple, Operación Triunfo. In 2004 Holly returned to CITV in a new role as children’s entertainer; Ministry of Mayhem certainly served up what it promised and gave her a world of

experience in managing a crowd of overexcited children. It also introduced her to her future husband, Dan Baldwin who was working as a producer on the same show. Holly and her copresenter Stephen Mulhern proved so popular that, in 2006, the programme continued under the title, Holly & Stephen’s Saturday Showdown. By 2005 Holly had also presented Feel the Fear, another children’s entertainment show in which participants were set a series of eye-watering challenges and, in acknowledgement of her sterling work in children’s TV, she was awarded a BAFTA in 2006.

Celebrity Spotlight

THE ONLY TIME I EVER GOT IN TROUBLE WAS WHEN I THREW MY SHOE ACROSS THE CLASSROOM. HARDLY SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK 'N' ROLL. That same year saw Holly switching her focus to adult TV, when she was chosen to present ITV’s Dancing on Ice, a similar concept to Strictly Come Dancing, only the contestants were obliged to learn the basic principles of ice skating on top of the dance routines. This high-risk programme attracted solid viewing figures and was the point at which La Willoughby transformed from bubbly children’s presenter to a family entertainer that the mums and dads (and especially the dads!) all enjoyed as a friendly yet calming presence.

her pregnancies and subsequent weight loss providing still more fuel for Britain’s famously intrusive tabloid newspapers. Her experience of motherhood obviously inspired her, since she went on to write two books about babies (Truly Happy Baby and Truly Scrumptious Baby) to accompany a book entitled The Best Friends’ Guide to Life that she had written in 2010 with her old friend, Fearne Cotton. The presenting offers kept rolling in: she co-presented the first two series of The Voice UK with Reggie Yates and, in 2012 she received one of her most significant professional compliments when she was lined up to revive Surprise Surprise, a family programme which had originally been hosted by the hugely popular Cilla Black and specialised in reuniting estranged family members. With its unique mixture of comedy and schmaltz, Surprise Surprise was one of the most well-loved programmes of the 1980s and 1990s, so for Holly to be named as its new presenter was an enormous boost to a career that was already on a stratospheric trajectory.

The presenting jobs kept coming; she teamed up with Davina McCall for Streetmate, a dating programme and formed a partnership with Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton for Holly & Fearne Go Dating. In 2008 she also became a team captain opposite Fearne Cotton on Leigh Francis’s alter-ego, Keith Lemon’s Celebrity Juice, the vehicle which probably most effectively showcased her talent for quick-witted responses and an innate ability to be a good sport. However, it was another Fern that propelled Holly Willoughby’s career into overdrive. Having co-presented ITV’s popular magazine programme This Morning with housewives’ favourite Philip Schofield for 10 years, Fern Britton announced that she was leaving the show in 2009, leaving ITV with the task of finding a suitable replacement. Britton, who had an easy presenting manner and shared Schofield’s mildly smutty sense of humour and tendency to giggle, had always seemed a perfect fit, In fact, such is the but it didn’t take Holly long to bed in with the show and viewers soon forgot that audience-pulling power of the line-up had ever been other than “Phil and Holly” and, I'D LIKE OUR FAMILY TO at the time of writing, she and Schofield GROW, AND I'D LIKE TO SPEND are still filling the MORE TIME AT HOME WITH 10:30 to 12:30 slot from Monday to THEM...WE HAD THIS PIPE Thursday every week. In fact, their ability to DREAM ONCE WHERE WE'D stay up all night at MOVE OUT OF LONDON AND awards ceremonies has become a WE'D HAVE A MUSTARD AND tabloid favourite, the JAM FACTORY! DAN WOULD red-tops featuring photos of their, MAKE MUSTARD AND I'D MAKE often inadequate, attempts to deal with JAM, AND THEN WE'D BE THERE sleep deprivation WITH LOADS OF KIDS AND and hangovers.

JUST HAVE A LOVELY LIFE.

By this time Holly had married her boyfriend, Dan Baldwin and would go on to produce three children,

18

Holly Willoughby that last year she was able successfully to negotiate a pay rise and achieve economic parity with her co-presenter, Philip Schofield. In an era – and an industry - where women are famously paid less than their male counterparts, this was no mean feat. Given her propensity for hard work she certainly deserves the money; she returned – again with Schofield – to co-host the revamped Dancing on Ice in January and still finds time to run Roxy Media, a TV production company she founded in 2014 and, as if this wasn’t enough for a mother of three, in 2016 she launched Truly Group LTD, an interior design company. Whatever she chooses to do next you can be sure that this enterprising young woman will be putting plenty of effort into it.

Rod on Elt’s Farewell Tour

They are the best of friends and call each other Sharon (Elton) and Phyllis (Rod), so Rod Stewart couldn’t help having a little camp fun at the expense of his old mate when he appeared on Watch What Happens Live. Labelling Elton John’s extravagant farewell tour a cynical marketing ploy, Rod said, “I did e-mail him and said, ‘What, again dear?’ but I didn’t hear anything back. I don’t think this big deal of saying ‘I’m going to retire’ is good, it stinks of selling tickets!” In case viewers of this American show didn’t understand Rod’s rough British sense of humour, he was quick to come to the defence of his friend when the subject of the recent incident when he stormed offstage in Las Vegas came up. “I can see why he got p****d off with it,” said Rod. Demonstrating how one fan kept tapping Elton on the shoulder - with the assistance of fellow guest, Cyndi Lauper - he continued, “I sort of understand because the person kept going like that.” Obviously, Rod is made of sterner stuff, because he went on to admit that he thrives on fans becoming over-enthusiastic: “I’ve been up on stage and had people coming up and nearly knock my teeth out, take my trousers off. I love it.” I only wish I’d known that when I saw Rod in concert in the 1980s!

During the month of March there was no bigger story than the spectacular fall from grace of Anthony McPartlin. As one half of Ant & Dec, the cheeky Geordies who bestrode the world of light entertainment like two bonsai colossi for several decades, Ant had everything going for him – until he admitted to an addiction to prescription painkillers last year before checking himself into the celebrities’ drying-out spot of choice, The Priory. The collapse of his marriage shortly followed but he appeared to have recovered and soon made his way to join Dec in the Australian jungle for another series of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! The duo seemed rock solid and returned to presenting duties for their popular family entertainment show, Saturday Night Takeaway – until, that is, disaster struck on the evening of Sunday the 18th of March. An admittedly appalling driver, Ant was involved in a three-car pile-up in which a three- year-old girl was rushed to hospital from the scene of the crash. Most shamefully Ant, who was seen shouting angrily at his mother, a woman he has frequently described as “my rock” and who was a passenger in his Mini, failed a breathalyser test at the scene and has been charged with drink driving. Admitting to a painkiller addiction and seeking the necessary treatment and being caught bang to rights for driving while intoxicated are two very different things and showbiz commentators are already wondering whether this is the end for the cheeky, chirpy duo.

The Wedding List

We think that our invitations were somehow lost in the post, but with only weeks to go until the wedding of the year, speculation is rife as to who is on the guest list for the Markle-Windsor nuptials. Unlike Meghan, Harry might not have anything as embarrassing as a former spouse, but he still has some ex-girlfriends to please and it has been rumoured that Chelsy Davy, Ellie Goulding and Cressida Bonas, among other old flames, will attend the ceremony. Of course, there are those who would sooner set fire to their intimate wear than have to run the gauntlet of their romantic ghosts, but Prince Hal obviously has bags of charm, since he has managed to remain good friends with all of his exgirlfriends. It has been claimed that Meghan’s reclusive father will be on hand to walk his daughter down the aisle for the second time – and we can only hope that Harry’s nan will also be on hand to lead the conga line. With the Duchess of Cambridge’s third baby due soon, all eyes will be on the House of Windsor.

Snow Patrol Back on Patrol?

Even at the height of their popularity they were often considered a bit Coldplay, a bit safe with their crowd-pleasing tunes and easy-to-sing choruses, so it’s not surprising that frontman Gary Lightbody shocked the music world recently when he confessed to a secret seven-year battle with the bottle and depression. Apparently, the situation dated back to his teenage years but completely spiralled out of control more recently when his father was diagnosed with dementia. Having managed to stay sober for two years, Lightbody revealed, in an interview with Radio Two DJ Jo Whiley, that the band is getting ready to release a new album: “It's been a while, it's seven years since our last album but it's nice, it gives you that kind of Christmassy feeling where you've got expectation and that bit of nerves.” He even had some good news to report about his beloved dad’s health, saying, “My dad is OK, he's 80 and three years ago he was diagnosed with dementia. You know, every day is different but there are days when he is on top form. It was his 80th birthday recently and he was fantastic, he did a speech, an impromptu speech with family, there were about 40 of us at our local pub… and he made a speech that was very touching, very funny." Here’s hoping that Wildness – the new offering – reaches the dizzy heights of their 2006 breakthrough album, Eyes Open.

Drew Vs Jake?

She is probably as well known for her rackety private life as she is for her acting career while he is one of Hollywood’s hottest stars, but that didn’t stop Drew Barrymore from taking a pop at her Donnie Darko co-star Jake Gyllenhaal when she appeared on The Late Late Show recently. Challenged by host James Corden to rank her co-stars from most talented to least, Barrymore confessed that she rated Adam Sandler most highly, but Gyllenhaal ranked at the bottom of the pile. Barrymore, who played Donnie’s English teacher Karen Pomeroy in the 2001 film was admittedly facing the ‘Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts’ challenge, which meant that it was either encountering the wrath of Jake or being forced to eat turkey testicles and she did seem contrite. She said: “When I run into him next time, I’ll be like, ‘Dude, it was selling you down the river or eating a turkey’s balls’. I don’t care if he hates me – I’m doing this because I won’t make it.” Sadly, we have yet to hear a response from Jake Gyllenhaal although, to be completely fair, he did make Donnie Darko very early in his career.

Reality Bites Unbelievably it seems that Natalie has been getting out and about even more since a hint of Spring first hit the air. She doesn’t like to sit around very much, that’s for sure!

Celebrity beautician, reality television star, and Director of Bardou Salon in Puerto Banús Natalie

Richardson

gives SOCIETY readers the chance to keep up with her latest exploits.

This month was very special as not only was it my birthday but Mother’s Day as well - which can only mean double celebrations and double presents!

Birthday Part One

As per usual the weather in Marbella was rubbish for my birthday, the heavens opened and ruined my planned trip to Barcelona, so my darling husband decided to treat me to a staycation instead! He booked us the Royal Ocean Suite at the Hotel Melia Don Pepe, which was glorious, I have to say a huge “thank you” to the hotel staff, who were so sweet and even brought me some champagne and cake to help us celebrate!

Birthday Part Two Next my Bardou babes wanted to join in the party, so on Saturday night we all headed to La Sala for dinner and dancing. Lisa and I might be the oldest of the group but we always seem to be the last to leave, so we carried on the party at Mosh’s fun kitchen. A huge “thank you” to Changing Seasons boutique for my stunning leather blazer, Aquazzura shoes and Tom Ford bag.

We actually brought the girls and their nanny with us as the hotel offers adjoining rooms and has a beautiful indoor swimming pool that they loved playing in and that way we got some couple time with dinner at Tahini Restaurant. Outfit is Zara and bag is by Fendi

International Women’s Day

For this special day I got together with some of my most inspiring and empowering friends and headed to Sea Grill to watch the stunning fashion show by Rinna Poldroos, eat fresh seafood and sample the delicious cocktail menu. Luckily my friend Ampika from The Real Housewives of Cheshire arrived just in time and was also able to join us. Bardou was personally asked to do the hair and make-up for the event, so my fabulous team headed down with one of our Bardou mobile units to make the models even more beautiful for the show. Dress spotted on Celeb Shoes YSL

If you would like us to attend one of your events please get in contact on +34 951 518 680 or email thebardou@marbella.com

Bikini Bodies

As I mentioned, Ampika was in Marbella and the reason for her presence was that she has launched her new Skinny Revolution weight loss pen. And guess which salon she has chosen to be the exclusive distributor? Bardou, of course! Skinny Revolution is an injectable appetite suppressant which has taken LA and the UK by storm. People have seen incredible results in weeks and - even better – there are no side effects! Bikini body ready in no time, so what’s not to love? Get in touch for more information.

Booty Gains

As you heard in last month’s column, I have been training hard with Luke Hill and, even though this has been my birthday month and I may have slipped slightly and drunk way too much champagne, I’m still gaining in the peach area! Kimmy K eat your heart out!

Fashion Faux Pas

Now ladies, I have to tell you something about this new fashion trend for latex trousers. DONT DO IT! We all know I’m a slave to fashion and willing to give pretty much anything a go so, for a girls’ dinner, I decided to don my new latex trousers. Now, not only do you need an hour to squeeze yourself into these very unforgiving garments, but you just try walking in them! Should any part of your legs happen to touch, it’s game over – you’re going down! Not only that but, trying to get the things off (in my case after one too many Bellinis) is a miracle; think Ross from Friends in the leather pants! Trust me, any passionate embraces are going straight out the window, along with the trousers! Shoes Louboutin, bag YSL, coat Matthew Williamson.

New Blood!

I’d like to introduce you to two of the Bardou team’s newest members: Brad, who did my incredible hair for the day and Nicola who completed my look with flawless, glowing skin.

Bardou on the White Island

Nobu Hotel Opening

It was the official opening of the Nobu Hotel Marbella, where a three-day ‘influencers’ event was held. Lisa and I headed down for the party (please note we only managed one night) where, of course, we had to take a selfie in the tunnel of lights. Another note, don’t wear a high street dress to a packed party! I think I saw at least four other girls in this Zara dress!

Sunshine at last!

Dress Zara, shoes Giuseppe Zanotti, bag YSL.

The sun decided to make a fleeting appearance, so my friend Yolanda and I headed to Cappuccino Grand Café for a sushi lunch and catch up! I know - I need shares in the Hotel Melia! We didn’t plan to twin our outfits but I guess great minds think alike. Can we just take a minute for my boots here please? Louboutin, I love you. Jacket YSL, glasses Celine.

Channelling my inner Dynasty look here: shoulder pads, big earrings, big eyes and bigger hair. Well they do say the bigger the hair the smaller the hips!

I’m so pleased to let you all know that Bardou will be in Ibiza as the official hair team at the Ibiza Fashion Festival! What an honour it is to be asked to do all the styling at this prestigious four-day event, which will be held at the new Wi-Ki-Woo boutique hotel. I’m so proud of my team; all their hard work and dedication has made things like this possible and 2018 is already looking as if it will be another incredible year.

The Curious Case Of Binge-Amin Boxset By Ian Greenland

According to the Oxford Dictionaries:

binge bɪn(d)ʒ/

informal (noun) A period of excessive indulgence in an activity, especially drinking alcohol or eating... or watching Breaking Bad

WHY HAS A RECENT US STUDY SHOWN A 14% DECLINE IN THE AMOUNT OF SEX WE'VE BEEN HAVING THIS PAST DECADE? THREE WORDS:

“NETFLIX AND CHILL”

I

t used to be we waited. We had no choice and truth be told, most of us couldn't imagine a world where we didn't have to. Einstein's theory of relativity told us quite plainly that much as we wanted to know what happened immediately after Ross called the wrong woman Rachel, the answers were not yet manifest - we'd just have to wait till next year. In 1999 we didn't question it, we just kept busy. While Friends producers worked on season 5, we invented Bluetooth, Clinton was acquitted, Pokemon fever hit the US, we circumnavigated the earth in a hot air balloon and we FINALLY came to an Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds. Oh, and we had A LOT of sex. Men pictured Rachel and women pictured not-Ross and we got busy to the tune of 285 babies born globally EVERY MINUTE! What else could we do in the weeks between episodes and

26

the months between series??! So why have birth rates steadily dropped year on year ever since? Why has a recent US study shown a 14% decline in the amount of sex we've been having this past decade? Three words: “NETFLIX AND CHILL” The hip among you may know that just a few years back, “Netflix and chill” was a common euphemism for “hooking up”. The less hip among you may not know that “hooking up” is a euphemism for “having sex”. For the really un-hip among you, “having sex” is what your neighbours do. Nowadays, when people say “Netflix and Chill”, they're actually talking about chilling out and watching Netflix. Since most people's definition of chilling out IS watching Netflix, “Netflix and chill” now means “Netflix and Netflix”, or “NETFLIX” for short..... So we've replaced sex with Netflix.

While the online giant leads the charge, it's not their fault alone these days we look but don't touch. TV boxsets entered the public psyche towards the end of the 20th Century and forever changed the way we consume entertainment. Whole weekends were lost to multipack Wotsits and Buffy the Vampire Slayer VHS marathons.... errr, so I've heard. A few years later streaming came along, saving us several quid on DVDs, a ton of shelf space and regular trips to Woolworths (sorry Woolworths, I'm sure you'll be fine...). Suddenly we were the masters of our own destiny. We could pretty much watch what we wanted, when we wanted and for however long we wanted. Sting even started boasting about his tantric Now TV sessions. This sudden and insatiable demand for new shows was unprecedented. And with the explosion of social media came the

some more, becoming more and more numb to quality in the presence of such overwhelming quantity. We've only recently looked up from our screens long enough to question where this might all be leading. A recent study by the University of Edinburgh media department (conducted hurriedly while the video was buffering on G.O.T. season 7) anticipates that at our current rate of consumption, by the year 2021, the majority of viewers will individually have watched “EVERY boxset created up to that point”. Let that soak in. It hasn't taken long to get within sight of this terrifying precipice. Beginning the bingecycle as many did with landmark shows such as The Sopranos, The Wire and The West Wing, the study posits that viewers developed a certain “tolerance” to quality early on. Brain chemistry itself was altered, with an enlargement of a cerebral lobe now known as the Amazonus Primus. Previously apathetic TV viewers were no longer willing to pay a license fee and wait three days simply for someone to get called a slag in Ian Beale's chip shop, when instantly available US dramas displayed such verve, sophistication and gratifying lack of Pat Butcher. As we began to feast on this new TV superfood, our appetite for it grew exponentially and desperate producers rushed to deliver us our next course. With the increased demand came the inevitable dip in quality: True Blood, 24, Lost - Not awful by any stretch, but if the fish and chips were fried perfectly, the mushy peas had some great big fucking plot holes.

implosion of actually being social. Instead of discussing “Who shot J.R.” with friends and colleagues by the water cooler at work, we tweeted #JonSnowDeadWTF?! from our pizza crust strewn bed, having called in “sick”. Having finished one boxset, we desperately hunt for the next, lest we should have to get dressed and leave the house. Like locust, we move from one series to another, devouring, tweeting, devouring

LIKE JUNKIES NOT QUITE GETTING OUR FIX, WE CLAMOURED FOR MORE AND MORE, DESPERATE TO CONSUME ANYTHING THAT MIGHT FILL THE HOLE

Nobody can keep producing the goods at a consistently flawless rate when the masses are banging their cutlery loudly on the table and dribbling impatiently. Case in point: my first article for SOCIETY, published last month was an undisputed masterpiece – I poured my heart, soul and everything I've ever learned into “How to take the perfect selfie” and the response was overwhelming. This one, it's ok but I'm not quite feeling it. Next month's will be worse still, and after that it will be the written equivalent of me repeatedly calling someone a slag in Ian Beale's chip shop. It's not that I've stopped trying; it's the law of diminishing returns. Just watch Dexter through to the last series if you don't believe me (don't!) So anyway, as TV standards started to drop once more, relative demand increased. Like junkies not quite getting our fix, we clamoured for more and more, desperate to consume anything that might fill the hole. Shows such as 2 Broke Girls (2 Girls 1 joke), Glee, and 2 ½ Men spat hundreds of episodes into our grateful little beaks like an extremely rare and never-beforefilmed eagle feeding its young in an

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE'VE CAUGHT UP WITH OUR OWN ABILITY TO PRODUCE? WHAT WILL THE BILLIONS OF SCREENS SHOW THEN?? award-winning BBC nature documentary nobody was watching because they were bingeing shite like 2 Broke Girls, Glee, and 2 ½ Men. Keenly aware of our mounting desperation, the industry displays its own, reheating turgid leftovers in the form of TV show revivals of X-Files, Full House, Gilmore Girls, Roseanne and more. There aren't enough new ideas left, so we've got the paddles out and we're trying to shock the old ones back to life, hoping they can stave off the inevitable event horizon a little longer. We have to have something on the screens. Anything. But what happens when we've watched it all, then watched it again and the remake?.... It takes months to make a show but just hours to consume it. What happens when we've caught up with our own ability to produce? What will the billions of screens show then??..... You already know of what I speak, though you're too scared to admit it. The nothingness at the centre of the abyss. Those cold, dead eyes boring into your soul from the depths of the cosmos, telling you to do something else with your life. That feeling of emptiness you'd forgotten lurked so ominously in every house in the UK when you were young and up too late. The sense of helplessness and despair. The chalkboard. The smiling girl. That FUCKING clown...

A Higher Loyalty by James Comey

Former FBI director James Comey shares his never-before-told experiences from some of the highest-stakes situations of his career in the past two decades of American government, exploring what good, ethical leadership looks like, and how it drives sound decisions. His journey provides an unprecedented entry into the corridors of power, and a remarkable lesson in what makes an effective leader. Comey served as director of the FBI from 2013 to 2017, appointed to the post by President Barack Obama. He previously served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, and the U.S. deputy attorney general in the administration of President George W. Bush. From prosecuting the Mafia and Martha Stewart to helping change the Bush administration's policies on torture and electronic surveillance, overseeing the Hillary Clinton e-mail investigation as well as ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, Comey has been involved in some of the most consequential cases and policies of recent history.

Britain’s Got Talent

Despite Ant’s personal crisis the show must go on, darlings and the stage is set for the eagerly anticipated 12th series - can you Adam and Eve it? - of the popular talent contest. Goodness knows what we’ll be seeing this time, although it’s a fair bet that there will be a few dancing dogs (Simon Cowell can’t seem to get enough of them), more than one cherubic moppet with a voice that could bring a tear to a glass eye for either all the right or wrong reasons and an illusionist or three, not to mention an impressionist who will no doubt test El Cowell’s sense of humour to the max with a sharp impersonation of himself. BGT time is always a big crowd-puller and the head honchos at ITV will be praying that interest in the show won’t dwindle just yet.

The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye by David Lagercrantz

Sentenced to two months in Flodberga women's prison for saving a young boy's life by any means necessary, Salander refuses to say anything in her own defence. She has more important things on her mind. Mikael Blomkvist makes the long trip to visit every week - and receives a lead to follow for his pains. For him, it looks to be an important expose for Millennium. For her, it could unlock the facts of her childhood. Even from a corrupt prison system run largely by the inmates, Salander will stand up for what she believes in, whatever the cost. And she will seek the truth that is somehow connected with her childhood memory, of a woman with a blazing birthmark on her neck - that looked as if it had been burned by a dragon's fire . . . The tension, power and unstoppable force of The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye are inspired by Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy, as Salander and Blomkvist continue the fight for justice that has thrilled millions of readers across the world.

Plebs

Not since the days of Frankie Howerd’s Up Pompeii! has the world of Ancient Rome seemed quite so ripe for having the mickey ripped out of it. Bizarrely scheduled for ITV1’s less than stellar and smaller sibling, Plebs boasts a great cast (including Joel Fry, Doon Mackichan, Adrian Scarborough and the wonderfully funny Tom Davis) and sharp scripts that create some terrific belly-laughs. Those of us who studied Latin at school may well have been heartened to imagine that one day the Ancient World would prove to be such a rich setting for low comedy. As possibly the only programme that can be listed as a ‘sitcom set in Ancient Rome’, Plebs more than delivers on every front.

Bosch

Anyone who has succumbed to the unique charm of Michael Connolly’s Harry Bosch will be rubbing their hands with anticipation at this fourth series which, so far, has done the eponymous detective proud. So, who is Bosch? Well, as you can imagine, he’s troubled (a Vietnam veteran and the son of a murdered prostitute), a bit of a maverick (he likes doing things his way!), has endless trouble with the ladies (who love him for his quiet, macho charm) and can’t stay out of trouble for love nor money. Just imagine Ian Rankin’s John Rebus transplanted to the Hollywood Hills and you won’t go far wrong. Titus Welliver does a bangup job in the title role.

Sam Owen is a relationships coach, psychologist and author, frequently employed as a relationship expert for TV and major brands. She helps coaching clients globally, with her solution-focused, proactive approach to relationships, dating, anxiety and confidence.

FEAR OF BREAKING I Love Them, I Love Them Not Self-preservation can make us do all sorts of things to make ourselves feel safe. For example, you can push unpleasant memories to the back of your mind, you can pick fault with others to justify your own drug-taking (legal or illegal) and you can neglect to help a fellow human being bullied or beaten for fear of embroiling yourself in a potentially dangerous situation. While the motivation behind psychological or physical self-preservation tactics may make sense to us in one way in that immediate situation, it doesn’t mean we always do what’s right, even for ourselves, in the long-run. When your focus in a romantic relationship is on self-preservation, matters like compassion for your partner, thoughtful behaviours, and ownership of your mistakes, can become a distant thought.

UP?

Such thoughts, feelings and behaviours can sabotage your own well-being, your partner’s well-being and your relationship. On the other hand, when your focus in a romantic relationship is on ‘us-preservation’, things like compassion, thoughtful behaviours, and ownership of your mistakes, become more of a priority. This focus results in thoughts, feelings and behaviours that can serve your own well-being, your partner’s well-being and your relationship. But what happens when you think your relationship is going to end, for example, because your sister says, “I can’t see you two lasting” or because, in the midst of a long-winded argument, your partner spits out, “I think maybe we should divorce”? What drives your subsequent thoughts and behaviours, aside from your feelings for your partner - self-preservation?

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

SO, BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO MOVE IN WITH THE PARTNER YOU’RE IN A LONG-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP WITH, OR BEFORE YOU ASK SOMEONE TO POSTPONE GOALS THAT REQUIRE THEM TO MOVE TO ANOTHER COUNTRY, DECIPHER WHETHER YOUR INTENSE FEELINGS FOR THEM ARE REAL OR SUPERFICIAL. instead cubic rather than linear. Instead, the results took this form below (I’ve added examples to help).

BREAK-UP RESEARCH

Recent research by Sciara and Pantaleo (2017) highlights that when we believe our romantic relationship is going to end, we can start to feel less committed to the relationship and have weakening romantic feelings for our partner; but not always. One hundred and four participants took part in the study. Some were manipulated into believing false statistics and hearing negative evaluations of the relationship questionnaires they had completed, in order to make them believe their romantic relationship was likely doomed to failure. Remember, in a position of authority, a person can make others believe falsehoods, especially if they attach a statistic to it. Participants were either led to believe that their relationship was at a low, moderate or high risk of breaking-up in the future or were not manipulated in this way whatsoever. Interestingly, rather than there being a correlation between the more you believe the relationship is going to end, the more your commitment level diminishes or strengthens, and the more your romantic feelings for your partner diminish or strengthen, the pattern was

When the risk of break-up was:

· not mentioned, the intensity of romantic commitment was strong (e.g. no breakup on the horizon = “I feel a strong sense of commitment to my romantic partner”). · low, the intensity of romantic commitment was significantly reduced (e.g. slight possibility of us breaking up = “Er, maybe I’m not that into you, actually”). · moderate, the intensity of romantic commitment was strong (e.g. reasonable possibility of us breaking up = “Oh no, I really like you!”). · high, the intensity of romantic commitment was significantly reduced (e.g. high possibility of us breaking up = “Fine, I’m really not that into you anyway!”)

When the risk of break-up was:

· not mentioned, the intensity of romantic feelings was strong. · low, the intensity of romantic feelings was significantly reduced. · moderate, the intensity of romantic feelings was strong. · high, the intensity of romantic feelings was significantly reduced.

Rather than self-preservation, the researchers liken this effect to how we might feel stronger romantic feelings for someone because it is a forbidden love of some sort, e.g. an interracial marriage or age-gap relationship. When there is a barrier of some sort between us and what we think we want, forced upon us by specific others or society, we might experience those romantic emotions more strongly and feel even more resolute in our endeavour to ‘fight against the odds and let our love prevail’. So, before you decide to move in with the partner you’re in a longdistance relationship with, or before you ask someone to postpone goals that require them to move to another country, decipher whether your intense feelings for them are real or superficial. Looking at the timeline of any drastic/ sudden changes that occurred in the intensity of those emotions, will help you to discover the truth. For example, if you only now, suddenly, for the first time in your relationship, feel like you want to marry your partner because they have said they want to take a job opportunity somewhere far away, maybe it’s a superficial feeling of love and commitment. Gain some clarity and then make the right decision.

SURGERIES YOU MAY

NOT KNOW ABOUT

BLEPHAROPLASTY EYELID SURGERY

NECKTITE - DOUBLE-CHIN REMOVAL

As you grow older, your skin will start to sag and this will also happen around your eyes. Sagging eyelids can actually impair your vision, causing you to squint or raise your eyebrows in order to see better, which when done repetitively can lead to headaches, fatigue, neck pain and deeper wrinkles. This in turn makes you look and feel older than you really are. Blepharoplasty is the removal of the excess skin on the upper or lower eyelids in order to open up the eyes again and bring back a more youthful look. Most cases can be done under local anaesthetic, and the recovery period is minimal. Scars are in line with the natural folds of your eyelids, completely hidden and very discrete. Blepharoplasty isn’t just a surgery to help you look more youthful, but also helps you to feel it!

GYNECOMASTIA - MAN-BOOB SURGERY An issue which affects many men but is rarely discussed is man-boobs, or the medical term Gynecomastia. Man boobs are caused by a hormone imbalance which stimulates glandular growth, so in some cases, no matter how much you go to the gym, the moobs won’t shift. Gynecomastia surgery removes these glands in a minimally invasive procedure to flatten the chest and bring back masculinity. Male surgery is on the rise, and we are seeing more and more men openly and comfortably talk about plastic surgery. We want to encourage men to understand that cosmetic surgery isn’t only for women, and that men also deserve the opportunity to regain their confidence.

The Chin can make the most dramatic change in a person’s appearance because removing even the smallest amount of fat, makes all the difference in the world. In this day and age, with social media booming and selfies coming at you left right and centre, it is difficult to find the angle you love which hides all the bits you are insecure about. Imagine not having to worry about your double-chin and feeling photo ready at any moment. Chin lipo makes you look younger and more attractive with a sharp jawline, better facial proportions and the laser tightens the skin. This is also a minimally invasive procedure which means minimal scarring with maximum results!

MOMMY MAKE-OVER COMBINATION SURGERY INVOLVING TUMMY-TUCK

There is no exact combination which defines a Mommy makeover, however it usually involves a Tummy-tuck (Abdominoplasty) as this is the most common problem area which affects women who have been through pregnancy. This surgery is designed to give you back your mojo, by getting a full body make over returning your body back to how it was, most of the time even better than before! This is done by tailoring the combination to suit you and target your personal problem areas. A common combination is a Tummy-tuck and breast lift, and at Cirumed we love to add in additional fat grafting to the hips to achieve a beautiful, curvy elegant silhouette. All mums to be a yummy mummy and have their confidence back and this make-over will help you get just that.

These are just 4 of the many types of surgeries carried out at Cirumed Clinic along with many cosmetic treatments and combination packages. You may be suffering with a body insecurity which you think has no solution, but just because you haven’t heard of the solution, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Come by our clinic and find out how we can help you!

THE HAMSTRINGS

This month I’m giving the upper body a break and moving back down to the lower body to discuss the muscles in the back of the upper leg - the hamstrings. The hamstrings are made up of four different muscles and, in a similar way to the groups of muscles discussed in previous weeks, the type of exercise you choose will activate each muscle to varying degrees. Contrary to popular belief, the hamstrings are only moderately active during multijoint lower body exercises. To get the most growth out of these muscles you need to include single joint, hamstring specific exercises. Therefore, the three exercises I have selected are all single joint (when executed correctly) and will help to stimulate growth across the entire muscle group, giving the upper leg a nice balanced look from front to back. The Romanian Deadlift : To ensure you maintain good form with this exercise you need to be confident that you know how to hinge at your hips while maintaining a neutral spine (i.e. not rounding the back). You can use a barbell held in front of you or hold dumbbells by your sides, which can help to reduce tension in the lower back. Start standing upright with soft knees. Move your hips back so your torso moves towards the ground, as if you are bowing. You should feel a stretch in the back of the legs.

THIS EXERCISES WILL HELP TO STIMULATE GROWTH ACROSS THE ENTIRE MUSCLE GROUP, GIVING THE UPPER LEG A NICE BALANCED LOOK FROM FRONT TO BACK. When your hands get to roughly shin level, drive the hips forward until you are back to a standing position. Aim to limit any bending at the knee (keep them soft, not locked) and create most of the movement from the hips (this keeps it more of a single joint exercise). This is a great hamstring exercise that will really stimulate improvements in strength and size. However, due to the way it works the muscles it can also create a lot of muscle soreness when you first start using it. So, approach its use with a little caution and build the weight up gradually. Gym Ball Leg Curls : While the Romanian deadlift trains the hamstrings through a hip dominant movement, this exercise trains them through a knee dominant movement (this is important for stimulating each of the hamstring muscles). To set up for this one lie on your back with your feet resting on a gym ball and keep your arms by your sides for stability. Push down with the heels and lift the hips with your legs straight. Roll the ball towards you by bending at the knee (keep the hips up the entire time to make sure the movement only comes from bending the knees). Once the knees are bent control the movement back to the start position and begin the next rep when the legs are straight again (don’t let the hips drop until the set is complete).

Nordics : This tends to be one of the more demanding hamstring exercises around and it helps to have a training partner, as you need something or someone to anchor your lower legs when performing it. It’s another great knee dominant way of training the hamstrings, working specifically the “lower” parts of the muscle group. To set up, kneel with both knees on a soft mat and stay tall through the hips (it helps to tuck the pelvis up a bit at the front). Have someone hold your feet down by the ankles. From here lean forward so you are moving only from the knee joints. Go as far as you can under control and then drop to the floor, breaking your fall with your hands. Then push yourself up off the floor, like you would when doing an explosive press up. Pull yourself back to the start position, engaging the hamstrings to assist in the movement as soon as you can. All three of these exercises will work well with the set and rep scheme from previous months. Week 1 - 3x8 (72reps/session, 144reps/week). Week 2 - 3x 10 (90reps/session, 180reps/week). Week 3 – 3x12 (108reps/session, 216reps/week). Week 4 - (deload week), 2x10 (60reps/session, 120reps/week). Then repeat the cycle for the next four weeks, aiming to add small increases to the weights used - don’t miss any reps though! Aim to include these exercises in your training schedule twice each week.

Allison Williams

Taking it back in time

Jeremy Scott made sure that his Moschino models truly received the Jackie O works for his A/W 18 show, which resulted in a heavily '60s-inspired offering, with pillbox hats, Mary Janes, wrist-length gloves and hair inspired by the First Lady's iconic voluminous bouffant. This was my favourite fashion week look by far. I would recommend that only the under 30s try this look at home, as it can very easily take on an air-hostess vibe. The hair would have been set in rollers and then carefully brushed out, sculpting it into a curvy, sky-high bouffant and then finished with copious amounts of hair spray. My only question to Mr Scott was why send some of the models down in matching body paint; it made them look like Teletubbies.

Alexander Wang

Get ready to bring out your inner 1980s power boss persona, because that is exactly what Alexander Wang delivered for his show. Now, let’s talk about those banana clips. Has Wang make them cool again? I say “Yes!” Metallic, embossed, silver banana clips held up the models’ hair in a modern take on the chignon. To get the look spray Redken Forceful 23 hairspray all over your crown for a strong hold and begin pulling pieces back into a ponytail. Next, secure with an elastic and twist the ponytail into a low chignon. Add a banana clip over the chignon. Apply a second layer of hairspray to seal the style.

Marc Jacobs

At Marc Jacobs, colourist Josh Wood created a multitude of jewel tone hair colours on the models. Among the looks there was a bowl cut with a reverse ombré of ultraviolet to black, a shocking pink-dyed undercut, a mod bob with a stripe of deep blue and a pixie cut with lime green and teal bangs. The hues were meant to look as if they were lit in a nightclub. This inspiration behind the colour palette was described as a little nightclub and vaguely ’80s and ’90s, I am so seeing New Romantic and Human League here. To go with the colour, Guido Palau cut rounded ’60s mod or bowl haircuts on the girls, The cuts are based on '60s classic Sassoon cuts and he used Redken’s Satinwear to smooth it out.

Going for gold

At this year's Oscars one major trend seemed to show up over and over again: waves. From retro to voluminous and romantic to borderline disco, there didn't seem to be one decade missing The Get Out star, Allison Williams styled her brunette lob with Old Hollywood waves, this was the winning look of the night. With her hair in sleek '40s waves with a deep side parting and her make-up kept fresh and minimal she was a perfect example of the golden age of Hollywood reimagined for 2018. Meanwhile, Jenny Cho manipulated Jennifer Lawrence's hair into voluminous S-waves - a style that was inspired by a throwback image of Kim Basinger. I would have preferred a side parting for this look as it would have been softer, For the colour Jennifer went for a cool blonde balayage on the mid lengths and ends.

Jennifer Lawrence

Lupita’s look was inspired by images of Amasunzu hairstyles, which are traditional to Rwandan culture. The hair was clean and sculpted to accent her dress and show off the neckline. She actually looked like an Oscars award at the 90th Academy Awards. I mean that gold Versace dress is seriously EVERYTHING. Katie Holmes

#FAILED

I just wasn’t feeling Katie Holmes’s fingerwave pixie 'do’ at the Grammys. Not only does her hair look solid, it actually ages her. It also looks like she has forgotten to put her bun on or that the hairstylist bought her a hairpiece and left it in the cab. Shame, Katie - you were so close with this look. Salma Hayek topped the list of worstdressed stars at the Oscars but it was her hair which offended me more. It was vile and robbed every bit of colour from her face. I don’t care what anyone says, I hate grey hair on women, especially when their hair is dark. It just looked like she had given up.

She’s Baaaack

I am not sure if anyone out there knows this, but the lovely Lottie has been on a six-month sabbatical. During this time, she went on a quest to find herself and has reached the natural conclusion, that the grass isn’t always greener and home is where the heart is - or rather it’s where Tina and I are. Obviously, she has been missed terribly and, in the words of Diana Ross and The Supremes, my world is empty without you. We ARE hoping that during her epiphany she decided to get treatment for her mobile phone addiction and I have a surgeon on standby, who is willing to surgically remove her phone from her hand if need be. I welcome my Lottie back with open arms but, hear me girl. if you do that again I will knock your head off.

He is a recognised expert in implantology, orthodontics and cosmetic dentistry and takes a holistic approach to his work to ensure that not only does he achieve an attractive smile, but a smile that is also healthy.

Always keen to provide the best and most advanced treatments available today, the Marbella Cosmetic Dental Clinic has introduced a new treatment approach called Molecular Dentistry , which Dr Steinruck explains.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

MOLECULAR DENTISTRY The origins, medically referred to as etiology, of diseases in the mouth are typically related to microorganisms. These live in a biofilm covering all the surfaces and pockets in the mouth: teeth, gums and implants. The bacteria are protected by the biofilm from attacks by the host’s own immune cells and antimicrobial substances. Even a near-perfect home oral hygiene regime cannot completely prevent the formation of the biofilm. The main reason for this is that both teeth and implants have rough surfaces that bacteria can easily adhere to. Fruit, fruit juices, energy drinks, sodas, salad dressings and other foods all contribute to our teeth, including implants, having this rough, pitted surface and contribute to demineralisation. What is needed is a smooth surface to prevent the colonisation and settlement of bacteria and reduce the risk of gum disease and decay. Now Dr Gerhard is able to offer a completely new solution to this problem. Called PERIOSHINE, it is a liquid based on SAM (self assembly molecules) technology, a crystalline mouthguard that generates a biorepulsive surface on original teeth and implants. This liquid prevents proteins and bacteria attaching to the biofilm and the surface is smoother.

Added to this, the teeth are remineralised and hardened, plus gum disease is reduced by up to 95%. The teeth look more pearly white, younger and fresher. They don’t stain from consumption of nicotine, coffee, tea, red wine and curries, because Perioshine seals the surfaces in the mouth in the same way that we seal the surfaces of a car, or furniture to prevent damage. OTHER DENTAL TREATMENTS If you’re thinking of having dental implants, then Dr Gerhard has a “no cut, no stitch, no blood” technique that also means ‘no downtime’. As Dr Gerhard explained, “If you are about to lose a tooth, either due to trauma, decay or gum problems or you have had teeth missing for some time, our immediate implants enable you to leave the clinic with temporary teeth, allowing you to carry on with your life as normal.” The clinic also offers full ceramic veneers, without any metal, that are computer milled using CADCAM software and made at a Swedish laboratory. And, if you suffer with gum disease, you can have the latest laser treatment called LANAP –Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure—that disinfects the entire mouth and resets your gum health.

The Six Month Smile Braces come in clear and white for those who want to correct crooked teeth in the fastest possible time, and as Dr Gerhard points out, this treatment is offered at a very affordable price. Teeth whitening is also on offer, and the clinic is also the exclusive supplier for Oral B 3D White Whitestrips in Marbella. These amazing strips will whiten your teeth for a big event and are the easiest way to whiten your teeth at home. What is more, the effects can last up to 12 months. Finally, you can make your face look younger as well as you teeth, as the clinic offers dermabrasion and HIFU treatments. The latter is an ultrasound treatment that addresses the different layers of skin to trigger new collagen and removes wrinkles and sagging problems, whilst the dermabrasion removes old skin and eliminates smaller wrinkles and makes skin and face glow with new health. For more information about treatments at the Marbella Cosmetic Dental Clinic visit marbelladental.com.

Dress for

SUCCESS As we leave Winter behind and are slowly awakened by the gentle air of Spring, we present an exclusive production tailored to looking polished at the office. Set in a stunning modern villa by ARK Architects, located in the hills of La Zagaleta, this elegant masterpiece with exceptional panoramic views of the Mediterranean coast and mountains is adapted to the times and needs of contemporary life. In an era when job descriptions and environments are becoming increasingly unconventional, figuring out what to wear to the office is becoming more and more elusive. Perhaps because of this, designers have been offering their own interpretation of executive chic. Liven up the office with a breath of fresh air in the form of bright, Spring ready outfits that will leave you feeling inspired. From elegant trench-coats to corporate trouser suits, feminine suit-dresses and beyond, we present chic office attire for this season, inspired by women who exude sophistication and class and redefine fashion and style in the work environment.

Set the tone the minute you step into the office with a statement coat that reflects style and individuality. Choose a bold colour or an interesting material, like this pastel satin finished trench-coat that isn’t as serious as a suit but still incorporates corporate flair and a feminine touch. Paired with an all-white outfit, you’ll be presenting yourself in your best light. Trench-coat, Top & Trousers: SSTRÖM BY GEM

“IT IS A FACT OF LIFE THAT PERSONAL PRESENTATION AND AN APPROPRIATE SELECTION OF ATTIRE AFFECTS THE FIRST IMPRESSION WE MAKE, ESPECIALLY IN THE CORPORATE WORLD, SO IT'S IMPORTANT TO DO IT RIGHT BECAUSE WE WANT TO BE JUDGED BASED ON OUR MERIT, ON WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE CONTRIBUTE. WE DON’T WANT OUR OUTFIT TO DETER FROM THAT. IN ESSENCE, OUR OUTFIT SHOULD REFLECT WHO WE ARE”. – Dominique Forsström

There’s nothing that shouts ‘business’ more than a fitted trouser suit with a crisp white shirt. I prefer this particular look with hair pulled away from the face, exposing the collar and elegant neckline. For a cocktail event, change your top and accessories and you’re good to go!

Aiming to strike a balance between corporate and fancy, especially when uniting work with events, makes it essential for a wardrobe to reflect that. A tailored suit-dress in a fine fabric is a must-have, especially in the Spring, when transitioning from a sophisticated corporate environment to a chic art event is a more frequent occurrence. Seasons in the Sun FROM ASCOT TO MARBELLA BEACH CLUBS

The ‘Season’ is a social calendar staple, whether you are in the United Kingdom, New York or Marbella. What are its origins and how has it changed?

Historically the ‘Season’ referred to the annual period of the year when the social elite presented their daughters at Court in the case of the UK, amongst other things. The United States followed the UK’s aristocratic formula with its own version. It required a substantial amount of cash, as most of the debutante balls, glittering dinner parties and extravagant charity events were held in London and New York, and those attending usually resided for most of the year in country retreats, like Downton Abbey. The London social season evolved in the 17th and 18th centuries, and in its traditional form it peaked in the 19th century. In this era the British elite was dominated by landowning aristocratic families. The social season played a role in the political life of the country: the members of the two Houses of Parliament were almost all participants in the season. But the Season also provided an opportunity for the children of marriageable age to be launched into society. Women were formally introduced into society by presentation to the monarch at Court. The traditional Season went into decline after the First World War, when many aristocratic families gave up their London mansions. From this time on an increasing number of society events took place at public venues, making it harder to maintain social exclusivity. Queen Elizabeth II abolished the presentation of young ladies at Court in 1958 and a number of events outside London started to play a greater role in the Season; the Royal Ascot meetings and Henley Royal Regatta are

56

examples of two major events that remain a part of this ‘exclusive’ social calendar.

Royal or a celebrity - it attracts all of them like bright-coloured flowers lure in the bees.

According to Debrett’s guide to the Peerage, the Season runs from April to August. There is still some attempt to retain its aristocratic heritage by the application of specific dress codes for certain occasions, especially those that the Queen attends. Royal Ascot is the best example of this and anyone who has tickets for the Royal Enclosure must follow the rules or face ejection. The dress code for men, women and even children is very detailed and will cost a princely sum to put together a wardrobe for the several days that it lasts for. After all, one can’t wear the same outfit twice.

Horseracing and equestrian sports are a major component of the Season. As well as Ascot there is Badminton, the Grand National, Glorious Goodwood and The Derby. The Queen’s ‘official’ birthday on 9th June is another ‘must attend’ date. This is when she attends the Trooping the Colour at Horse Guards Parade and coincides with the publication of the monarch’s Birthday Honours List. It’s quite a sight if you love pageantry. Other events that are also part of the London season are Wimbledon, The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, Cowes Week for the yachting fraternity, the Lord’s Test Match and, that other sport of Kings – polo at the Hurlingham Club.

But what else constitutes the ‘Season’ in the UK? In the Arts there is the opera at Glyndebourne and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. The Chelsea Flower Show is another must, and this THE CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW IS ANOTHER MUST, is attended by Her Majesty, as well as thousands of visitors AND THIS IS ATTENDED BY HER MAJESTY, AS WELL who just want to see the AS THOUSANDS OF VISITORS WHO JUST WANT spectacular garden designs TO SEE THE SPECTACULAR GARDEN DESIGNS. and catch a glimpse of a

The traditional end of the London Season is the ‘Glorious Twelfth’ of August, which marks the beginning of the shooting season. This is when ‘Society’ would retire to the country to shoot birds during the autumn and hunt foxes during the winter, before coming back to London again in the spring. Many writers have covered the Season in their work, most notably Jan Austen in “Sense and Sensibility”, whilst Edith Wharton gives us a taste of the New York Season in “The Age of Innocence.” More recently, the TV series “Downton Abbey” amply portrayed the Season’s role in the life of a land-owning aristocratic family before the Great War and in the years after it. But London isn’t the only place to go for the Season – Marbella has one as well.

The Season in Marbella

Marbella also has its Season. It marks the moment when residents and visitors who reside here during the summer months emerge from their homes, or arrive from overseas to take part in some wellestablished events. The White and Gold Party hosted by La Sala by the Sea is one of the Marbella season’s most important opening parties and for many guests it defines the summer to come. This year it will be held on 8th June. Mahiki Beach in central Marbella is a newcomer to the scene and the season, and it will be hosting a spectacular tiki-themed party on 15th June. Nikki Beach’s White Party has also been another popular opener for a number of years and this year will be held on 24th May. Other beach resorts and clubs have followed suit, such as the Ocean Club Champagne Parties and it hosts its first one on 6th May. Plaza Beach and nightclub Pangea in Puerto Banús are other venues that night and day partygoers flock to. In July, the art world flocks to Marbella for its recently established International Art Fair and from the end of July through August, European royals and celebrities arrive in Sotogrande for the polo tournaments. Apart from the beach parties, it’s pretty much like the London and New York season on a smaller scale. The Season is now a much more democratic event: you don’t need to be an aristocrat to be invited, although nobody will mind in the least if someone blue-blooded does turn up, because then it’s more like ‘The Season’ after all. And, there are some social customs we like to retain in ‘local’ formats – whether we are in London, New York or Marbella.

The Way to a Brighter Home

With Spring fully underway and summer so close you can almost feel it, the promise of sunny and bright days got me thinking about lighting and how it can often be an afterthought when you’re decorating your home. For designers, lighting is our secret weapon. Lighting is the Louboutins that make the outfit; the tonic to your gin. We all need lighting. But as intrinsic to design as lighting is, most don’t realise the added value it brings, the ambience it can help create and the striking design element it can be.

86

Home Couture

Rita van Dijk, founder Villa25

LET THERE BE LIGHT You may be thinking that because you live in a rental property, it’s just easier to live with the lighting that’s already there. But why live with something that can easily be upgraded and taken with you should you decide to leave? And for those of you who own your home, look around and ask yourself if your lighting is enhancing your space and elevating your mood. Did you put the same thought into your choice of light fixtures as you did for, perhaps, the sofa or dining table? Not all lighting is created equal and the right lighting can mean the difference between cosy and cold, sexy and flat, dramatic and sterile. So, if you had to choose, which one would you opt for?

THE NAKED TRUTH I remember growing up in London and seeing so many rooms with a bleak, naked light bulb hanging in the centre of the ceiling. My budding designer eyes just couldn’t handle it. Then as the years went on, a stoic lampshade was added in a futile attempt to improve the dire design situation. Later on, an additional twist was introduced, and the lampshade was hung upside down to create a sorry attempt at an uplighting effect. Luckily, we’ve come a long way and we’re now living in a time when even the humble light bulb has evolved and morphed into a statement piece with the stylish Edison bulbs and popular LED lights. Everything we’ve ever known about lighting has been elaborately and beautifully reimagined and today’s choices are, simply put, breathtaking.

EVERYTHING WE’VE EVER KNOWN ABOUT LIGHTING HAS BEEN ELABORATELY AND BEAUTIFULLY REIMAGINED AND TODAY’S CHOICES ARE, SIMPLY PUT, BREATHTAKING.

IT’S ELECTRIFYING

If you’re fortunate enough to have high ceilings, then a statement chandelier is a must. The word chandelier does not necessarily mean ornate and old-fashioned crystals. Generally, a chandelier is the name given to any suspended ceiling light with multiple bulbs. There are so many different styles and finishes, so it all depends on what look you’re going for. Wherever possible, make sure your electrician installs all of your fixtures

with dimmer switches. If you’re anything like me, your lights will be permanently dimmed, even if it’s ever so slightly; it really makes a difference and creates a welcoming, warm ambience. For those whose ceilings aren’t high, or maybe you don’t have a central ceiling light point, there are beautiful alternatives that don’t hang as low or are designed to be wall-mounted and will still add that crucial design layer that finishes off a space.

87

Home Couture

LIGHT THE WAY LET’S NOT TAKE IT LIGHTLY A room that has been traditionally neglected when it comes to lighting is the kitchen. But the heart of the home has stepped up its lighting game and most designers will allocate a healthy part of the budget to the careful selection and mixture of pendants over a kitchen island, under cabinet fixtures, and track and recessed lighting. The light fixtures chosen in a kitchen, or any other room for that matter, give you the opportunity to add colour, dimension and contrast to the backdrop that is everything else in the space.

88

Before the dawn of the world’s first light bulb, we used candles and their mighty power still plays a huge role in our lives and spaces with their incandescent, poetic movement that dances across our walls. There are millions of types of candles out there, but my current fascination is with what some call the forever candle; wickless candles that are battery operated. Even these forever candles continue to evolve, and today’s variety is a very realistic and sophisticated version that emulates the natural as closely as the artificial can. And now the addition of scented capsules is the latest trend we absolutely love.

LIGHTS OUT If you are thinking about redecorating or looking to update some elements in your home, needless to say, you need to factor in the lighting. And if your budget allows for it, more is more in this case. Trends we’re now seeing are multiples of the same light fixture hung together to create a cluster of lights, so anything is possible. BENALÚS: The Beautiful

arbella’s ‘Mila de Oro’ or Golden Mile is one of the most famous addresses in Europe. It represents a luxury lifestyle and its prestigious properties amply reflect its upmarket status. This five kilometre stretch from Rio Verde, east of Puerto Banús to Plaza Bocanegra in Marbella contains some of the most celebrated real estate in Spain, including a King’s palace and life in this oasis of sunny splendour is every bit as sumptuous as you might expect. It hasn’t always been called this Golden Mile; this soubriquet was coined by German singer turned property developer, Roy Boston and it has stuck, largely because it so accurately captures the ambience of this ‘millionaire’s row’. The Golden Mile has a well-established housing stock and new properties are few and far between. Current buyers are seeking contemporary new builds and until recently they had to look beyond this prestigious area, sometimes very far beyond, which for many overseas investors wasn’t exactly what they wanted, but now there is a luxury solution on hand – the exclusive residential community of Benalús.

92

This project was on hold for a while, mostly due to the issues with building licences and planning permission at Marbella Town Hall. As many will be aware, the Marbella property market has been static in recent years due to the annulment of its General Urban Planning regulations (PGOU), which have only recently been reinstated. One of the effects of this was a slow down, to almost a halt, when it came to granting building licences for new construction in the Marbella area at a time when buyer demand was increasing. The Benalús complex sits on a plot 9,326m2, of which 5,700m2 is dedicated to the luxury apartments and recreational areas. These include the beautifully designed sub-tropical gardens, a chill out area with luxurious sunbeds, spa, gym, solarium and swimming pools, plus indoor swimming facilities. Another 7,000m2 is dedicated to green areas surrounding the apartments, where residents can stroll, jog or find a quiet place to sit and contemplate. Everything has been designed to create a five-star ambience and there are communal relaxation areas that feel more like the lobby of a leading hotel than an apartment complex.

EVERYTHING HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO CREATE A FIVESTAR AMBIENCE AND THERE ARE COMMUNAL RELAXATION AREAS THAT FEEL MORE LIKE THE LOBBY OF A LEADING HOTEL THAN AN APARTMENT COMPLEX. The residences are divided into three buildings with apartments on the ground floor plus three upper floors, with the top two offering duplex penthouses. In total there are only 27 homes in Benalús, making it the kind of boutique development that guarantees privacy and tranquillity. There is a choice of two, three or four-bedroom apartments and each one comes with garage space and a separate storeroom, which is invaluable and a feature that can be hard to find in other developments. Quality is the watchword of the Benalús developers. They have sourced the best quality materials for use in all aspects of the building and, as many know, with the devil being in the detail, they have taken great care to furnish each apartment with the most contemporary, stylish and robust fixtures and fittings.

Keep it Real

The master bedrooms are a good example of the care and attention to detail that is evident throughout. They are spacious, and have an en suite bathroom that can easily become a private oasis. They also have romantic French windows opening on to a private garden, and there aren’t many apartments anywhere on the Costa del Sol offering this kind of ambience. Benalús offers individualised apartment layouts. For example the Penthouse Plus is the maximum expression of exclusivity. This incomparable penthouse is arranged over three floors with an approximate surface of 800m2. The main floor houses a living room, dining room and a kitchen in a layout that is both open and functional, with access to their own terrace. There is also a bedroom on this floor with en suite bathroom. The second floor has a suite and two additional bedrooms, all of them with their own dressing room and en suite bathroom. The large spaces, the luminosity of the rooms and the views from the terraces invite you to relax. On the top floor you can enjoy the hydromassage pool, a barbecue with friends, or some relaxing moments at the chill-out area by a real suspended garden. The Ground Floor Plus residences have a covered terrace leading directly to a splash pool and green lawn. These apartments have a 60 square metre suite with a built-in dressing room and its own bathroom, in addition to a master room and three additional bedrooms.

THE BENALÚS RESIDENCES ARE A REFLECTION OF THE MAJESTY OF MARBELLA’S GOLDEN MILE AND AS IT IS ONE OF THE ONLY NEW DEVELOPMENTS ON OFFER HERE All of them are equipped with en suite bathroom and dressing room. And, all bedrooms have an access to a terrace that opens on to the garden. The kitchen, the living room and dining room form a functional space that is open to the garden light. Unbelievably, there is a real orchard that integrates with the pool-solarium area. One of the most appealing features of this home is the basement-loft: a perfect play area or a magnificent apartment for guests with total privacy. Other styles available include the Duplex, the First Floor, the standard Penthouse and standard Ground Floor. However, all of them are certainly not average or standard. La Albaida, a Marbella interior design studio was brought in to provide a style that is the height of contemporary

elegance. Muted shades dominate throughout, complemented by natural woods, with the occasional splash of rich colour adding dramatic contrast and drawing the eye to the amazing contrast of light and shadow. The spacious terraces accessed through large glass doors are a seamless extension of the indoor area and provide enough space for sunbathing, or hosting a dinner party. The Benalús residences are a reflection of the majesty of Marbella’s Golden Mile and as it is one of the only new developments on offer here, it has a touch of exclusivity that you simply won’t find elsewhere on the Costa del Sol. 951 194 646 benalus@benalus.com benalus.com

LORD of the Rings MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE

NEW AUDI A8

100

TORQUE TALK

THE NEW A8 IS THE COMPLETE LUXURY SEDAN Of the three traditional German prestige marques that battle each other from compact car to super sports car level, Audi was the latecomer to the luxury sedan party. Mercedes started this flagship game back in the 1930s, and BMW’s first 7-Series made its debut in 1977. Audi did not have a reply until 1988, when they launched the V8, the first production luxury sedan with a 4WD option. But it was not until the V8’s successor arrived in 1994 that a big Audi proudly wore the A8 badge. Audi’s all new fifth generation flagship, internally known as the D5, is the fourth car to bear the A8 moniker. Based on Audi’s MLB Evo floorpan, shared with the Audi Q7 and the latest Porsche Cayenne, the latest A8/L is slightly narrower than the outgoing model but a tad longer.

101

TORQUE TALK

FROM THE DRIVERS’ SEAT THE NEW CAR IS SUPREMELY COMFORTABLE, AND I FELT I WAS SITTING IN AND NOT ON THE CAR. .

102

The first A8 (D2) of 1994 had a good, solid, Teutonic look to it and still has reasonable presence today. This also applies to the D3 that succeeded it, and was also the first A8 to receive Audi’s deeper and bolder front grille look at its mid-life facelift time.

Under its aluminium skin it features five suspension links at each corner, with air springs as standard and active damping as an option. The quattro 4WD system is also standard, and thankfully there is no entry-level frontwheel-drive variant this time round.

However, the A8 (D4) of 2010 was less convincing as a design. It was rather bland, not a plus point in a segment where presence and authority exuded by the likes of the Mercedes S-Class is paramount. It was thus no surprise that the 2014 facelift was quite comprehensive and included new body panels that gave the car a tauter, more purposeful look.

From the drivers’ seat the new car is supremely comfortable, and I felt I was sitting in and not on the car. Bearing in mind that people over 50, who will make up the bulk of A8/L buyers, are not necessarily computer or tech savvy, it is important that the plethora of driver aids and infotainment gadgets appearing in these new cars be easily accessible and logical to users.

Learning from that expensive lesson, Audi’s designers put more muscle into the new A8’s looks from day one. Subtle haunches over its front and rear arches deliver a greater sense of latent power under the skin than before. Like a well-groomed bodybuilder in a pin-stripe suit, the new A8/L looks calm with its latent power, and is arguably less overt than the recently face-lifted S-Class.

In that respect Audi has always been a leader in intuitive control interfaces. Not long after BMW Introduced their iDrive system in the E65 7-Series, with its drop down menu driven interface, Audi launched their first MMI system. I commented at the time that it felt like BMW’s iDrive had a rather opaque Microsoft Windows style drop down menu interface, while a Mac user had designed Audi’s MMI.

TORQUE TALK

MMI has only got better over the years and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit debuted on the TT in late 2014, and has now been rolled out across the range. With more dashboard real estate on offer, the new A8 enabled the engineers to take this and the infotainment system to the next level.

This means that the screen does not leave a big black ‘hole’ in the dashboard when it is off as is the case with other cars, unless the screen retracts or rolls away. As an alternative to the latter system, this elegant solution saves cost, weight and complexity.

The latest processors behind the infotainment system are 50 times faster and feature two large touchscreen displays - a 1540 x 720 pixel, 10.1 inch on the dashboard, and a 1280 x 660, 8.6-inch centre console screen. The bigger screen looks after telematics, while the smaller one controls the HVAC system and some convenience features. The instrument pack technology will be familiar to anyone who has driven one of the current Audi A4, TT or R8 models.

Cabin room is generous in both compartments, particularly so in the rear of the 120mm (5.1 inch) longer LWB version, where the extra legroom allows you to specify individual rear seats with a centre console in between.

This all works quite intuitively and I found no issues in navigating the various functions using the big touchscreen, which has amazing clarity. I also like the fact that that big screen is integrated into a black piano lacquer trim that spans the whole dashboard.

As with its rivals from BMW and Mercedes, the L variant comes with the option of a reclining relaxation rear seat opposite the driver, and a footrest that motors out from the back of the forward adjusted front passenger seat. With the seat thus extended and an Audi driver behind the wheel I felt on top of the world, and closed my eyes to concentrate on what is most relevant to a limousine - silence and ride comfort.

103

TORQUE TALK

104

TORQUE TALK

105

TORQUE TALK

106

TORQUE TALK

While the new A8 is quiet, further extraneous noise is kept from the cabin by the two optional glass packages. The first is acoustic double-glazing, while the second adds extra UV protection to the doubleglazing to keep the cabin cooler in hot climates. In rear seat ride comfort terms the previous A8L was good, and I put it on the same level as its BMW 7-Series rival at the time. However, both these cars gave best to the W221 and W222 S-Class models, which may not be as good a mount for the keen driver, but are measurably superior in rear seat ride comfort. Latterly, the current BMW 7-Series with its all-new air suspension came close to the Mercedes, and pips the A8/L D4 to the post as VIP limo transport, but the latest A8/L with its new generation active air suspension turns the tables on the very competent BMW, and takes the fight to Stuttgart. The low speed secondary ride of the new A8L is sublime, and while you can feel the kind of small bumps that were discernable in the outgoing model, they are now rounded off and absorbed to the point where you simply celebrate Audi’s mastery of the physics involved. The sheer speed with which the computer controlled damping works results in a seamless experience at high speed is similarly impressive. Coupled with the dynamic all wheel steering this cars high-speed stability is unerring, which makes for stress free motorway driving. The measured reduction in turning circle thanks to the rear wheel steering is 1.1 metres, allowing an A8L to match the 11.4 metres turning circle of the much smaller A4. At speeds over 60kmh, the rear wheels can turn up to 1.5 degrees to effectively ‘lengthen’ the cars wheelbase, resulting in greater dynamic stability.

107

TORQUE TALK

With Sport mode engaged, and using the paddle shifters to control the standard eight-speed Tiptronic used on all variants the A8 gobbled up the cross country route, the low roll, exquisite body control and 4WD traction making for rapid, drama-free progress even at a fair clip.

108

car were barely more comfortable from behind the wheel. Of course while the smaller 17 and 18-inch sizes might make a bigger difference, they certainly would not look good on such a large car.

The alloy wheel range encompasses 17-inch to 21-inch, and the LWB test cars at the launch wore 265/40R20-inch Goodyear Eagle F1 rubber, with the entry-level SWB 50 TDI cars on 255/45R19inch Michelins.

For owners in markets such as the US where unleaded petrol is the tipple of choice, the turbocharged V6 55 TFSI quattro with 340hp and 500Nm, or the V8 60 TFSI quattro with cylinderon-demand (COD) technology and 460hp and 660Nm, are an extremely comfortable way to cover the miles.

In practice, the suspension is so well calibrated for all these factory wheel and tyre options that the 19s on the SWB

I drove the latter whose engine is refined, potent, and provides good lowend grunt and strong top-end thrust.

TORQUE TALK

Combined with the new chassis, this makes the new A8/L an incrementally superior car to its forbearers in all respects, including comfort, performance, fuel economy and emissions. The W12 flagship, with its supercar challenging 585hp and 800Nm of torque, is the only version that does not wear a number badge, just ‘W12’. We were only able to drive it at modest speeds in a closed off test area, but as expected its motor is eerily refined.

The Audi A8/L production line is housed in a new building in Neckarsulm, and the 50, 55 and 60 A8/L models go on sale in Europe immediately, with US deliveries of LWB-only petrol models starting in the second half of 2018. Output will be ramped up over the coming months according to demand, with up to 260 cars a day possible by late 2018. The W12 and V8 TDI models will follow during 2018, along with the A8L 60 e-tron quattro, which will be able to drive

about 30 miles on battery power and be charged inductively from a garage or carport floor mounted unit. Equipped with 4WD and air suspension as standard, the new Audi A8/L is a very complete car out of the box. With a rear seat experience that now matches the much-vaunted and recently face-lifted Mercedes S-Class for secondary ride, Audi now fields a very convincing all-round contender in the luxury saloon class.

THE W12 FLAGSHIP, WITH ITS SUPERCAR CHALLENGING 585HP AND 800NM OF TORQUE, IS THE ONLY VERSION THAT DOES NOT WEAR A NUMBER BADGE, JUST ‘W12’.

SPAIN 1914-1918

By royal decree of August 7th, 1914, Spain declared “the strictest neutrality” in the conflict that was about to engulf not only Europe, but the entire world. This did not, however, prevent the internment of German forces in Spanish Guinea in 1915, or the intervention by the Spanish ambassador in Brussels, on the direct orders of Alfonso XIII, to try to limit the effects of the German occupation of Belgium. Opinion was divided. Generally speaking the aristocracy, the Church, and the army favoured Germany, whilst intellectuals and the middle classes favoured Britain and France. As early as 1915 some Catalans were volunteering for the French army, mainly in the Foreign Legion. Eventually, with a recruiting centre in Barcelona, some 2000 Spaniards served with the Legion. At the same time, a more general view of Spanish society

110

was expressed in the cartoon which appeared portraying two society ladies with the caption “Without fashions coming from Paris, I don’t know what to put on!” Not only fashions didn’t arrive, but when España class battleships were put into production, as a precautionary measure, the main battery guns did not arrive until 1919, after the war had ended. This situation mirrored the general state both of Spanish industry and the armed forces at the time. In 1909 the army had been soundly defeated by the Rif tribesmen of Morocco, and had scarcely recovered. The Spanish navy had been virtually obliterated by the United States in 1898. When in 1916 a “Bill of Military Reform” was introduced into the Cortes, seeking to professionalise the army by the introduction of intellectual and

physical tests, particularly for officers, it was, of course, stoutly opposed by the bloated officer corps. The political situation was aggravated by social and economic backwardness, and complicated by regional differences. Equally, it has to be remembered that the vast majority in Spain were largely illiterate, and felt totally uninvolved in what was going on north of the Pyrenees. As the war impacted on Spain, informed political opinion became increasingly divided. Spanish industry in the north and east expanded as demand rose amongst the warring powers, although the collapse of the railway system under the strain did not help. In the rural areas the influx of foreign capital produced inflation and increased the peasants’ poverty. Internal migration to the industrial areas resulted, which

exacerbated poverty amongst those left in rural areas such as Andalusia. A “crisis de subsistencias” resulted, and food riots broke out in December 1915. The government of the conservative Eduardo Dato resigned. He had, like many others, believed naïvely that the war would be a short one, and had even offered Spain as a host for the future peace conference. The liberal Alvaro de Figueroa now took over. In 1916 he was forced to reiterate Spain’s strict neutrality following a threatening statement from the Allied Powers which had resulted from the visit of the German submarine U35 to the port of Catagena, bearing a personal message from Kaiser Wilhelm II to Alfonso XIII. The Spanish king had, from the beginning of the conflict, never ceased to offer mediation between the warring sides. He established an office in the palace which dealt with a wide range of humanitarian actions; the exchange of prisoners, the neutrality of hospital ships, being but two of his initiatives. When the United States, hitherto the leader of the neutral countries, entered the war in 1917, Alfonso believed that he could take on this leadership, but in the meantime Figueroa began secret contacts with the Allies, instructing the Spanish ambassador in Paris, Fernando Léon y Castillo, to explore the possibility of Spain obtaining Tangiers, Gibraltar, and a free hand in Portugal, if it sided with the Allies. Somewhat understandably, the Allies were not too keen on this suggestion,

with Britain taking some umbrage at the thought of the loss of Gibraltar and the betrayal of her oldest ally. In April 1917, with Germany waging unrestricted submarine warfare, the Spanish steamship San Fulgencio was sunk. Figueroa despatched a stiff note, amounting to an ultimatum, to Berlin. The king, his ministers, and the conservative opposition protested against such a dangerous action, and Figueroa resigned. The conservative hand was further strengthened by the events in Russia, where Czar Nicolas II and the Romanoff dynasty had been

toppled by the Bolshevik Revolution. Alfonso XIII intervened with the Bolshevik authorities in an effort to liberate the royal family, but was unsuccessful. Now Manuel Garcia Prieto, with Dato at his right hand, replaced Figueroa, to be followed in fairly swift succession by Antonio Maura. Tensions with Berlin mounted. By August 1918 Spain had already lost sixty ships and a hundred seamen; some 20% of Spain’s merchant navy’s tonnage. Maura notified Berlin

that in future any further losses of Spanish ships would be replaced by the seizure of German ships taking refuge in Spanish ports. Germany responded by threatening further belligerent action, but in October 1918 it handed over six ships to compensate for Spanish losses. This concession was largely brokered personally by Alfonso XIII with a personal approach to Wilhelm II. As we have seen, Alfonso was very personally involved in Spanish neutrality. From his accession, he had maintained a far greater presence in Spanish foreign policy than was normal in other European monarchies. This was in large part due to the weakness of the Spanish political system, which eventually resulted in civil war and the king’s loss of his throne. But during the Great War his conduct was wholly admirable. The civil confrontation of words, ideas and principles, which had been magnified by the propaganda resources made available in the country by either side in the conflict wishing to maintain Spain’s neutrality, magnified the divisions within the country. Although initially promising, with Spain playing an active part in the establishment of the League of Nations, it proved to be a false dawn. The spectacular economic development during the war did not serve to benefit society in general, and faded shortly after peace was declared.

MARBELLA GIVES ABANDONED ANIMALS A LIFELINE Thanks to a request from Triple A animal rescue charity and a deluge of complaints on social media from local residents, Marbella town hall has abandoned its search for a new company to run the service that collects abandoned and dead animals form the streets. It comes after a clause in the contract was discovered that would allow the company winning the tender to put down any unclaimed animals after 10 days. Triple A had a meeting with the Mayor to clarify the charity’s role in collecting pets in Marbella, whilst opposition parties in the town hall also criticised the PP-led council for privatising more council services, and PSOE will propose a motion that Marbella should ban any animal from being destroyed.
