her career at a peak Gigi walked for everyone from Versace and Chanel to Balmain and Fendi as well as becoming a Reebok Ambassador and showcasing her debut boot collection with Stuart Weitzman. It was around this time she met One Direction band member, Zayn Malik, the pair went on to film Malik’s ‘Pillowtalk’ video together and participate in their first couple shoot for Vogue. The duo briefly broke up in 2018 but were reunited by the end of the summer.
There’s always stories about cute girls in the gym, I’m just not one of those people.
In 2018, when online trolls attacked her for being too thin, Gigi revealed she suffers from Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune thyroid disorder. She tweeted, “For those of you so determined to come up with why my body has changed over the years, you may not know that when I started at 17, I was not yet diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease; those of you who called me ‘too big for the industry’ were seeing inflammation and water retention due to that.” Adding that she’s since been “properly medicated” and was also “part of a holistic medical trial that helped my thyroid levels balance out,” Hadid said that her body now breaks food down differently and wouldn’t address the negative comments anymore, writing, “I will not further explain the way my body looks, just as anyone, with a body type that doesn’t suit your ‘beauty’ expectation, shouldn’t have to.”

In April 2020 Gigi announced that her and Zayn were expecting their first child together, they welcomed their daughter Khai in September 2020. Speaking of the birth she shared that her mum, Yolanda and sister Bella were on hand, as well as boyfriend Zayn and a midwife. ‘I had to dig deep. I knew it was going to be the craziest pain in my life, but you have to surrender to it and be like, “This is what it is”. I loved that,’ she said, explaining that she went without painkillers. ‘There definitely was a point where I was like, I wonder what it would be like with an epidural, how it would be different.” Last month Gigi returned to the runway for the first time since having Khai, alongside her sister Bella, for the Versace Fall/Winter 2021/2022 show. Showcasing her perfect strut, Gigi glowed in a black bodysuit and sheer black floaty skirt as she wow-ed both opening and closing the show whilst showing off her latest red hair hue. Taking to Instagram to mark her return the supermodel posted, ‘Opening & closing @versace is always an honour and was the best ‘comeback.’ Mostly just lucky to be healthy, working and in a safe/tested environment to hug so many I’ve missed like family this past year. Thank you to everyone who made this possible, especially my Italian Taurus queen.’ Back doing what she does best only six months post birth, at only 25 years old, we have no doubt there’s a lot more to come from supermodel, Gigi Hadid.

e all watched Piers Morgan walk out of Good Morning Britain after a row with weatherman Alex Beresford over his remarks on Meghan Markle’s mental health. He then made the decision to step down after six years on the show. But now many of his loyal fans have urged for his return with a petition calling for his reinstatement reaching 360,000 signatures. Since his departure the show’s rating have continued to plummet and BBC breakfast has stormed ahead in the viewing figures. The show has lost almost 40% of its audience since the controversial host sensationally walked off the ITV set. His rant about Meghan and Prince Harry has since become the most complained about TV in history racking up over 57,121 Ofcom complaints.

rince Harry has used his own experience of losing a parent to write a moving foreword for a special book written for children who experienced the loss of a parent of loved one during the Covid-19 pandemic. Hospital by the Hill tells the story of a young person coming to terms with the loss of their mother who was a frontline worker in a hospital. In the opening chapter, Prince Harry pays tribute to his late mother, Princess Diana who he tragically lost at the age of 12. “If you are reading this book, it’s because you’ve lost your parent or a loved one, and while I wish I was able to hug you right now, I hope this story is able to provide you comfort in knowing that you’re not alone,” the duke wrote. The book is being released to coincide with Britain’s National Day of Reflection and will be free of charge to any child or young person in the UK who has been affected by the loss of loved ones to COVID-19.

Why we need to embrace the power of the most positive season
In this hemisphere we are fully immersed into spring, the meaning of which carries more than just the name of a season. The clocks spring forward, we spring into action, as do the birds, bees and plenty of other animals. It is a time of new growth, birth and hope. A time of looking forward, of resurrection, and what a coincidence, it looks like it will also be a time of release. Release from the grasp of the dreaded global pandemic we have lived through since last spring was postponed.
Lockdowns are gradually becoming a non-entity and we are going to venture forth into a new world with similar backdrops as we once had but a whole shift in perspective, value, and gratitude for life. Hopefully through the struggle we have learnt to love our neighbours, be there for family and friends, respect those who work to save lives and help others, and the beauty that human nature has presented during this time. Now is our moment to resurrect and use what we have endured to look forward into a better world with fresh, yet more experienced, eyes.
Easter brings us the joy of painting eggs, eating masses of chocolate, treasure hunts, family gatherings, and chicks and bunnies etc. but it also brings with it a time of hope, trust, faith and positivity as we look forward into new beginnings. Just as the old biblical tales tell us. This is physically and naturally represented by the buds, the leaves, the sprouts, the chicks, lambs, butterflies, and the eggs are hatching new lives (rather than being of a chocolate flavouring). This is a time for looking forward, taking action and soaking up opportunity.
Spring is the time when we come out of the darkness of winter, in our case, lockdown as well, when restrictions are literally lifting in nature as well as society. The cold lifts to invite the sun’s warmth, the darkness retracts to allow longer days of light, the sickness and suffering passes to invite health and vigour, death graciously invites new life, what became barren now becomes bountiful; the circle of life continues.
So hope and spring go hand in hand, they are a representation of each other. This is a time for individuals as well as the world to wake up, to revive, to burst with colour, flavour and vitality. To take action, invite inspiration and plunge into commitments and fresh starts. Let’s take this opportunity to grab spring by the proverbial horns and embrace this offer of a new beginning. Let’s purge, donate, provide. Move on, advance, think ahead. Open our windows, hearts and minds, breathe in the new and invite invigoration. Soak up the sun, share life once again, and have fun, frolic and forage in the bounty that is spring.
For many the winter can be a suffocating time both mentally and physically, then the nature of spring can apply itself to encourage and uplift. We are more connected to nature than we often realise or notice. Spring is a time when the fog starts to clear, when transformation is the primary agenda. If winter is the chrysalis of life, then spring is the butterfly.

EMBRACE WHO YOU ARE… Marbella is known for being very international and having residents from across the world. Being situated so close to Morocco we have a high number of residents from Middle Eastern countries living here, which is one of the reasons it is very popular with the film industry. Especially at present with the pandemic, and travel restrictions, it’s extremely useful to have a vast range of actors within close proximity.
Whether you speak multiple languages or have a unique cultural background, embrace it, own it and strive for it. Don’t try and hide it away. You have something rare and that’s what will get you your role. Have you ever thought how hard it is to find a good actor for a Middle Eastern character? Or someone who speaks a foreign language like Russian or Chinese, or
even Arabic? Well, why hide these unique features when instead they could be booking your next role! Put it this way, every actor should embrace their unique selling point. After all, acting is a job, so why wouldn’t you do everything possible to make the job easier, especially when all you need to do is simply be yourself.
Two previous students, Lamia Dani and Tariq Amawi, who attended Marbella Film School were booked and are now filming a new series, ‘Glow and Darkness’, a production directed by Jose Luis Moreno, one of Spain’s top directors in the business. It is being filmed all around Spain and stars Jane Seymour and Denise Richards. Lamia plays Isma Ad Din Khatun, the wife of the Saladin, the main character and Tariq plays Amir, the Saracens captain. Both these wonderful actors managed to book these roles by embracing their unique selling point. In this case, not only being great actors that suits the role, but also, their ability to speak Arabic. Lamia is half Dutch, half Moroccan and moved to Malaga when she was 7. She came across our school by coincidence and came to us with no prior acting experience. She is thrilled to have been part of this big, new production, working with other professional actors who have treated her with respect and kindness. Lamia feels it is really important to keep a positive attitude on set, as well as be proactive, humble and kind to everyone. She also believes the industry has had an increase in diversity in recent years and recognises how her Moroccan descent and Arabic look are what helped and allowed her to book her role. In May she is looking forward to shooting in Almeria, Spain, for a new film.
On attending Marbella Film School…
“
Nicole Moerland - Founder of Marbella Film School
“I joined Marbella Film School in March and continue to learn so much from Nicole, the school’s Director and Acting Coach. I just completed a Villain Course at the school with Netflix actor, Mahesh (pictured right) and got the chance to shoot a showreel under his direction. It was an amazing experience, and I am very grateful for this opportunity. I am looking forward to continuing my training this term.”
Lamia Dani
A word from actor, Tariq Amawi
ALL HER EXPERT TIPS BROUGHT MY PERFORMANCE TO LIFE ON SCREEN, AND SHE HELPED ME PREPARE AND SEND IN THE AUDITION.
I remember Nicole, the founder, telling me I ought to play to my Middle-Eastern background as I would be more likely to be cast in a role. She said, “I can see you playing an Arabian warrior”. I took her advice and began to hit the gym and grew out my beard and began embodying the Arabian warrior archetype. Then as if by magic, one of the other actresses, Deena, told me about a casting where they were looking for…wait for it… an Arabian warrior.
I heard back a couple of days later from Dreamlight Productions saying that I got the part!
I was looking and feeling ready for the role. They asked me to send a self-tape in, and so in my naivety I recorded one at home on my smartphone.
Overall, it has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Being on set with all the lights and cameras, actors and extras was so much fun. I loved dressing up in costume and can see myself doing so much more of this work in future. Big thank you to Nicole and to Marbella Film School and also Mahesh Jadu whom I did my first acting course at the school with, for preparing me for the role!
I was feeling quite happy about it and so I asked Nicole if she would take a look at it. Her response… “I’m so glad you showed this to me before you sent it!”
It goes to show that you need to act as if you already have the part. I trained at the gym and began to prepare as if I already had a role as an Arabian warrior and then it manifested. Also, I wouldn’t have got the part had it not been for Nicole’s advice to play to my heritage for casting and also to send in a professional self-tape.
“
I have completed two courses now at Marbella Film School and both have been instrumental to me getting my first speaking role in a TV series. It goes to show that even without too much experience, so long as you have the right guidance you can still land a great role.
“I wish it was 4 times longer. I enjoyed every minute and was captivated through each class which were an expert blend of theory and practice. And while filming a professional showreel at the end is a wonderous climax to the whole experience and something that sets the Marbella Film School apart from its contemporaries, it’s a bittersweet end as I am already craving more, and more.”
Tariq Amawi
“Really that bad?” I questioned. “We can do a lot better,” she said. So, I booked a professional selftape session at Marbella Film School. She guided and directed me, and we used a professional camera and lighting. The difference was night and day.
FUN FACT: Lamia, Tariq and myself, (Pablo) all attended a ‘Villian course’ at Marbella Film School together taught by Netflix Actor Mahesh Jadu, who has been in ‘The Witcher’, ‘Marco Polo’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and many more.

THE LAST BOOKSHOP IN LONDON: A NOVEL OF WORLD WAR II by Madeline Martin
Cat lives in Los Angeles, far away from 36 Westeryk Road, the gothic home in Edinburgh where she and her estranged twin sister, El, grew up. As girls, they invented Mirrorland, a dark, imaginary place under the pantry stairs full of pirates, witches, and clowns. These days Cat rarely thinks about their childhood, or the fact that El now lives there with her husband Ross. But when El mysteriously disappears after going out on her sailboat, Cat is forced to return to 36 Westeryk Road, which has barely changed in twenty years. LIFE BY MISADVENTURE - Rag’n’Bone Man
Three years after he became the fastest-selling male artist of the last decade, Rory Graham has revealed that his new album will be titled Life By Misadventure. The new release is out this month and marks the return of a radical British breakthrough act. The new album was written and recorded in Nashville with Graham co-producing alongside Mike Elizondo Eminem, 50 Cent, Fiona Apple, Alanis Morissette) and Ben Jackson-Cook, his longtime musical director and band member. The album was recorded live with a band including Graham, Jackson-Cook, bassist Bill Banwell, backing singer and Desri Ramus, drummer Daru Jones and guitarist Wendy Melvoin, who played with Prince & The Revolution. Closing track Old Habits was recorded in Graham’s garage at home in the UK. Rag‘N’Bone Man said: “We had quite a time to live with the songs this time around. Too often, how I’d done things before, was that we’d written a song and I had to sing it the same day, and that was the version we’d use on the album. This way, it was far easier to get real emotion into the music.”
2 CRY FOREVER Amy Shark More than two years on from the release of her critically acclaimed debut record Love Monster, Amy Shark has revealed her forthcoming sophomore album ‘Cry Forever’. The Gold Coast singer has worked with the likes of previous collaborators Dann Hume, M-Phazes, and Joel Little, in addition to the emerging talent of Jamie Hartman (Lewis Capaldi, Rag ‘n’ Bone Man), Dan Wilson (Adele, Leon Bridges), and Sammy Witte (Harry Styles, King Princess), Shark has crafted an album which showcases her growth as an artist at the front of the local music industry, along with her own personal evolution, and her ability to speak about much more personal topics.

3 YOUNG HEART - Birdy Young Heart is the upcoming fourth studio album by British musician Birdy, After the release of 2016’s Beautiful Lies, Birdy took a break away from music, eventually reintroducing herself in November 2020 with the release of the EP Piano Sketches. Talking of Young Heart Birdy shared that it is “quite stripped back – anything that didn’t need to be there, isn’t. There’s no decoration”. To record the album, Birdy worked with producers Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian who had previously worked on Kacey Musgraves’ 2018 album Golden Hour.

g MIDLIFE n i m i a Recl your...
MOJO
Claire and James Davis are the husband and wife team behind multi-award winning coaching and fitness company 38 Degrees North.
Awareness of what’s going on in our bodies as we age means we’re able to do something about it to ensure a better quality of life.
The couple have a successful midlife health podcast The Midlife Mentors and their passion is helping midlifers achieve not only the body, but the lifestyle they deserve. They also run The Midlife Method 8 week transformational programme for body, mind and soul that achieves phenomenal results for clients. The couple’s science based approach, leveraging their backgrounds in psychology, coaching and NLP, empowers individuals with the tools and knowledge they need to make positive changes to their lives.
B
efore we get into the tips, let’s look at the physical aspects, as knowing what’s going on during midlife, from a hormonal and physiological perspective, can help us better understand what we should be doing for success. Both men and women find it harder to burn fat, and in particular belly fat as they age. Women store more fat in general due to declining oestrogen.
themidlifementors.com team@ themidlifementors.com
Men also have more muscle, which creates a higher metabolic rate, meaning they’re able to burn the calories they consume more effectively. For both men and women falling levels of testosterone and the human growth hormone contributes to a steady loss of muscle mass, meaning our metabolic rate (the effectiveness at which we burn calories) decreases further - so we’re more likely to hold onto body fat. Aside from the above here, are some hormonal reasons both males and females find fat hard to shift at midlife and beyond:
40
INSULIN A majority of the population are consuming far too much sugar and studies suggest there’s a link between high sugar intake and holding onto belly fat. As we age we become more insulin resistant - making it harder to process these sugars - hence we become even more prone to laying it down as belly fat.
LEPTIN Some studies show the hormone leptin (which signals to your brain that you’re full) - decreases as we age. This will of course mean you eat more calories than you use - creating a calorie surplus and increasing the chances of putting on weight.
CORTISOL Life becomes increasingly stressful as we age! When we’re stressed, the stress hormone cortisol increases, which is linked to storing fat, especially around the mid section.
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
Now we know what’s going on in the body, here’s our top 10 tips for mind, body and soul to guarantee midlife health, happiness and success…
1
DITCH THE DIET!
That might sound surprising but diets have 97% plus failure rate. They all work essentially the same way (despite the fads and hype) - namely restricting calories.
However, many diets result in a loss of muscle mass, a lower metabolic rate and keep you locked in a long term, torturous cycle of feast or famine.
2
MOVE MORE
There are two sides to the energy equation: what we ingest and what we ex-pend.
The more calories you burn consistently, the better your chances of keeping the weight off.
The most effective (and time effective approach) is to do short intense HIIT workouts.
HIIT creates an oxygen debt, which can take up to 24 hours for your body to recover from. All that time it’s burning energy and raising the metabolic rate - helping you blast away belly fat.
3
CUT BACK ON SUGAR
4
Sugar is hidden in so much of our day to day food (such as syrups in lattes, cereals and ‘healthy’ low calorie bars) - so knowing your food labelling is essential. Also when products are low fat, they tend to be high in sugar (to add taste), so don’t be fooled.
Not only that, our body prioritises alcohol for metabolisation in order to flush it from the body, which means any food you’re eating is more likely to be stored as fat.
6
RESISTANCE (WEIGHT) TRAIN
With it goes strength, and our metabolism lowers (muscle is metabolically active). We also start to lose bone density.
The good news is that regular resistance training (and it can be bodyweight at home - you don’t have to hit the gym) can preserve our muscle mass, strengthen our bones and even be beneficial for our brains!
7
Aim for around 40-45% of your overall daily intake to be carbs. These should be fresh vegetables, ideally filling up on leafy greens and minimising processed carbs like bread, cakes and pasta.
Front load your carb intake in the first half of the day and go low carb in the evening. That evening carbonara is NOT a good idea!
5
MODERATE ALCOHOL
Yes drinking can be enjoyable, but alcohol is essentially empty calories and high in sugar.
Over time your effort compounds and you’ll start feeling the difference in mind, body and soul.
9
WORK ON YOUR BELIEFS AND SELF-IDENTITY Often the reason
we “fail” at anything, is not about what we’re doing externally (the diet, the workout) - it’s because we haven’t addressed our beliefs about ourselves.
So if you manage to lose the weight but you believe you’re not a healthy, slim person - you will more than likely move back to your beliefs at some point. Because you cannot out perform your own self identity.
Spend time with your goal and see what beliefs hold you back. Begin to understand what beliefs you’d need to reach your goal and stay there. Then reinforce these beliefs with action because truly success is always 80% mindset, 20% action.
DE-STRESS We’re all aware of the
mental and emotional toll stress can take on our emotional and mental wellbeing, but did you know it can affect your body too?
When the stress hormone cortisol remains raised our bodies are more likely to hold onto fat, particularly in the abdomen and hip and thigh areas.
Learn some stress management techniques to help your body and mind. After all we cannot always change what’s going on in the external world, but we can be responsible for how we react.
KEEP YOUR CARBS IN CHECK AND FRONT LOAD THEM Carbs get a bad name but most of us are simply eating too many of the wrong kind.
As we age declining levels of testosterone (even for women) and human growth hormone, mean that we naturally lose muscle mass.
8
10
DON’T COMPARE Comparison
Newsflash: you’re watching everyone else’s highlight reels and only seeing what they want you to see.
Focus on your own progress and shut out eternal distraction. You are unique, so do what works for you.
Remember, life is for living, so have fun and create balance! Life is too short to be miserable obsessing about portions, exercise and how big you think your bum looks.
Aim to get things right for your personal goals 80% of the time, and 20% of the time enjoy life.
When we’re happier, our body responds in kind.
PRACTICE GRATITUDE Numerous
studies have shown that constant practice of gratitude can improve your emotional, physical and mental health in as little as three weeks - not to mention, make you more optimistic, create better sleep patterns and a tendency to help others (which in turn pays dividends back to your wellbeing). It’s so simple to do… Take 3-5 minutes each morning to simply write down three things you are grateful for. The key is to really feel the gratitude - not just pay lip service to the practice.
is the thief of joy and in today’s social media obsessed age it’s all too easy to fall prey to comparison envy.

By Ian Greenland
I
nvented some 500 years ago by (depending on which accounts you believe) either aristocratic Renaissance wunderkind John Hair or Hartlepool fishwife Mildred Hair, hair quickly became a cultural sensation. Despite predictable claims of heresy (hairesy?) from an outraged Catholic Church who at that point still maintained the sun went round the earth, a hitherto cold-headed population gratefully boarded the hair-train and in just two short years (we hadn’t yet learned to count well so years frequently ended up longer or shorter than necessary), hair had spread like wildfire around the world. As various demographics offered their own take on the 16th Century’s hottest new accessory, hair was soon seen to sprout on legs, arms, groins and, in the case of dads, backs. As even the church fell in line, allowing monks to sport cranial strands (albeit only round the edges and shaved on top – you know the one...), what followed were nearly five centuries of follicular harmony. A perfectly balanced, self-regulating ecosystem developed of, on one side, hair, and, on the other side, hairremovers. Whether with razors, scissors, hot wax or more recently, actual frigging LAZERS, a brave army of professionals
42
...IF YOU CAN JUST CONVINCE YOUR PARTNER TO JOIN YOU IN GOING FULL STIG OF THE DUMP, THEN BALANCE IS RESTORED AND SEX’S LOSS IS NETFLIX’S GAIN. have kept the hairy hordes in check across the ages and for the most part, peace has been maintained, although a cultural blip historians now refer to as “the 80s” saw the pendulum swing dangerously as humankind nearly failed to contain hair’s worst tendencies. By 1985, mullets could be seen on most city streets and literally millions were lost to the perm, but the “Battle of flock-of-seagulls” eventually saw control wrested back by those wielding the clippers. Undefeated, though somewhat shaken, we gratefully ushered in the 90s and three more decades of relative equilibrium. Then lockdown.... In the past year, not only have we seen a genuinely
devastating loss of life, nearunprecedented levels of mass social isolation, plummeting mental health, decimated business and legitimately unsettling concerns about the education and future development of our children, but we’ve seen it with eyes located just below (or in many cases now peering through) some shockingly unruly barnets. Yes, the salons and barbers have been shuttered, but with shops, pubs, restaurants, cinemas, gyms and numerous public spaces also temporarily closed and severe restrictions on seeing well, anyone, there’s a legitimate argument that it really doesn’t matter what we look like (if it ever truly did...) Perhaps unwittingly exhausted already by society’s general expectations, many of us have indeed embraced that
concept. I mean, sure, I’ve attempted to home school my son (something professionals train hard and are duly compensated for, though not well enough I’ve discovered) whilst attempting to manage my own mental and physical health, keep my freelance business afloat and pay the mortgage - in fact, move bloody house four weeks back - but by the third straight month of “jolly phonics” and “magic maths” don’t expect me to bother shaving, clipping my toenails or putting trousers on. Of course our romantic relationships often bear the brunt of our decisions to no longer play by society’s rules. Where intimacy could blossom due to the close proximity of lockdown, eventually the general non-erotic nature of a deadly global pandemic will always win. Nevertheless, if you can just convince your partner to join you in going full Stig of the dump, then balance is restored and sex’s loss is Netflix’s gain.
AT SOME POINT THOUGH YOU HAVE TO START CARING AGAIN... At some point though you have to start caring again. For me, that was last Monday when Rafa’s primary school reopened and I found myself within coughing distance of non-related humans for the first time in months. At drop-off and collection!! Not only would I need to start wearing trousers, i’d probably do well to zip the flies up. Having mastered that five days running last week, today I looked in the hallway mirror after dropping him off and accepted there was probably more I could do. Granted I’d jogged alongside his scooter the 1.4 miles in, granted there’d been a bit of a headwind and granted i’d taken the dog for a blustery walk in the woods on the way back but the bastard child of Wolverine and Ken Dodd staring
back at me when I got home made me question why several other dog walkers had smiled and greeted me politely instead of immediately calling the police. Probably fear. Simultaneously realising I knew what to write my next article about and that I couldn’t bear to spend another day with my deranged manga hair, I took a selfie (via the mirror because I forgot there’s an actual selfie mode these days), grabbed my beard trimmer and gave my fiancée free reign to do her worst. I actually asked her to do her best, which she did until the battery died halfway round. I currently look 50% less ridiculous, but strangely also 50% more ridiculous. She’s going to try to finish it off tomorrow. I’ve got a wedding to photograph in some form or other on April 10th and though thankful of the work, barbers don’t begin to open until the 12th so whatever she manages, that’s what I’m going with. At least I’m behind the camera. Besides, in theory I won’t be the only one there with shit hair since we’re all in the same boat (or so the Government keep telling us, though they all seem to be neatly coiffed.... hmmmm) It’s the hairdressers I feel sorry for. Not only have they been out of work for months, but when they do finally reopen some 14 months after this madness really kicked off they’ll be hit with a tsunami of maladjusted, socially inept customers with split ends, dandruff, bird’s nests and absolutely FUCK ALL to talk about....
“Been anywhere nice on holiday?” No “Any good clubs?” - Nope “Get up to much at the weeke..?” NO “Cinema..?” - Just cut my hair dickhead!

Let’s not lie who doesn’t want to look sexy? In today’s world, sex sells! But what’s the price tag? What does the label of being “sexy” really cost for both our body & mind? What would you say if I told you many of the things we do to vamp up our sex appeal were actually harming our sex-life? It seems counter-productive, doesn’t it... Washboard abs, tight-fitting clothes, stilettos & photo-ready posture may be tricks to help us appear sexier, but many of these things can be the catalysts of health problems too.
Are you ready to take off those blinkers and find out both sides of the notso-sexy story? If so, grab a cuppa and carry on reading to explore the ultimate 4!
FLAT STOMACH 247
Sucking our stomach in for the odd photo is harmless, but unfortunately (yet understandably) via societal pressures and beauty “ideals”, many individuals have become accustomed to “sucking it in” around the clock. If you’re in my Pilates class mid-abdominal-series, drawing down your lower belly contracting those muscles is a good thing. However, when we’re living our daily lives cooking our dinners, working and socialising, constantly drawing-in our abdominals can cause a functional crisis for the core! I’m not talking about the six-pack abs here; I’m talking about the deep-core consisting of the transverse abdominals, diaphragm, multifidus and pelvic floor. Sucking in the stomach doesn’t allow the intricate core pressure system to work well; our core needs to be able to contract and relax with the breath to keep the intra-abdominal pressure at an optimal level. Think about it when we “suck in’ we don’t lose weight mass is just displaced. Where do all the innards, fat and tissue go? Well, they press up into the diaphragm (big breathing muscle) and down onto the pelvic floor! Without diving deep into the realms of anatomy, if the diaphragm can’t move, the pelvic floor can’t recruit its muscles either; this can cause a whole host of issues from urinary incontinence to painful sex and constipation. Not quite the traditional description of sexy! On the flip side, when our deep core is optimal sex is optimal too...

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
“BELFIE” POSTURE
PICTURE “PERFECT”
Body-selfies will pack our social feeds as the warmer months spring upon us, but these snaps don’t come lightly. Introducing pin-up-posture, think arched back, heart to the sky balancing on those tippy toes.
Scarcity by definition is “insufficiency or shortness of supply”. When someone has a scarcity mindset they often feel they aren’t enough, that haven’t got enough, or they don’t do enough. What’s most evident in today’s world is the societal pressures women face resulting in many feeling short in terms of beauty, always striving for more.
THIS BOOBS-OUT-BUTT-OUTBACK-ARCHED STYLE MAY MAKE A PAGE-3 WORTHY PIC WITH LOTS OF LIKES, BUT, AS ALWAYS, THERE’S NO YIN WITHOUT YANG!
A scarcity mindset might as well be labelled as the second pandemic in today’s techno era with morphed bodies, photo-shopped imagery, filters and plastic surgery/enhancement filling our subconscious minds day-in-day-out.
Exaggerating the hyper-lordosis (arch) in the lumbar lower spine creates an anterior tilt of the pelvis. This pelvic position has its place during certain movements but forcing this position for longer periods of time or purposely adopting this posture for aesthetics sakes can cause a whole host of issues for our pelvic floor and the happiness of our spines!
Author Bené Brown calls our society “The Culture of Never Enough”. Social media and marketing messages enforce this feeling of lack in an attempt to sell! To make a profit by selling items, treatments and the alike to women who supposedly lack something keeping them out of reach from beauty or being enough in comparison to other women who supposedly “have it all”.
Good posture which actually serves the body is when the spine is neutral, a stacked alignment of the shoulders, ribs & hips. The glutes are neither stuck out or tucked under, but comfortable in a natural S-cure.
Speaking from my own experience, despite being grateful for my able and strong body, I’ve often felt like I’ve been stuck in the “work in progress” stage, plenty of my clients too.
MANY WOMEN WREAK HAVOC TO THEIR METABOLISMS FROM YOYO DIETING FOLLOWING CELEB ENDORSED FADS. Many grit-and-bare unbreathable fabrics and painful shoes striving for sexy, and others spend all their hard-earned cash on aesthetic treatments which literally dissolve away. I’m sure to some degree we’ve all bought into these media messages keeping up to date with current beauty standards and the latest trends, but do we know anyone who honestly feels they have arrived at beauty? And how much time have we missed out by not appreciating and enjoying true health?
TROUBLESOME ACCESSORIES Several items should come with a warning, waist “trainers” ultra-skinny jeans & heels too name a few. There’s a good chance you own at least one of those things, and I’m not saying we should never use them (I’m all for a black stiletto on date-night), but I also think we should know what complications they can cause if worn too often. By now, we understand the importance of a freely moveable core. Sucking in paired with waist trainers, corsets and those jeans that make you walk like tin-man exacerbate the issue tenfold. Not-to-mention waist-trainers worn while exercising. Waist-trainers paired with abdominal exercises such as crunches is a classic recipe for urinary incontinence (yikes). Once we’re rocking our tight-fitting garms, why not add insult to injury by wearing some sky-high heels? These may make our legs look long and booty high, but beauty doesn’t come without pain, am I right? Along with “legs-for-days” our calves may shorten, ankles can become stiff, and postural compensations are unavoidable throughout the entire bodily chain. If that wasn’t enough to make you think twice a pointed toe style can cause our toes to morph into a pointed shoe shape (aka bunions); now that’s sexy...
Beauty standards are constantly changing so who’s to say we can’t set our own? Paris Hilton may have been known for her sex appeal but even she states, “No matter what a woman looks like if she’s confident she’s sexy” and I quite agree. To me sexiness is an aura it’s an energy, and I never feel sexier than when I feel good, healthy and comfortable in my body. Together let’s redefine beauty in a way that honours and maintains the function of our incredible and unique-selves. After all, this will only help us feel alive, vibrant and yes, you guessed it, sexy!

The Spiritual
FACELIFT By Nicola McGeorge
The Zone Face Lift, a combination of ancient healing, Bergman Method facial reflexology and advanced massage techniques is the latest ‘must have’ treatment loved by celebs and beauty journalists alike, for lifting both the face and the spirit.
“The Zone Face Lift massage is extraordinary” — Tatler Magazine After a backlash in the media, celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz are ditching their botox appointments and opting for more natural alternatives. The growing trend for treatments that allow the skin to look fresh not frozen is behind the growth of a whole new breed of practitioner — the Botox detoxer.
“Never experienced a treatment so spiritually healing yet effective! My skin is glowing and lifted, all achieved chemically and enhancement free... Zone Face Lift is definitely my go to choice.” — Celebrity & Model Sophie Anderton

Therapist Helen Kitson, based in Estepona, has brought the Zone Face Lift to our shores and is already seeing her clients giving up their filler addictions. ‘I have been a qualified reflexologist for over 20 years,’ explains Helen. ‘I am also
trained in aromatherapy and Indian head massage. So when I read about advanced facial reflexology and zone lift facials, a unique treatment bringing the skin back to a radiant condition whilst working on both the inside and out, I knew it would be a perfect fit for me.’ Helen studied under award-winning facial reflexologist, Ziggie Bergman ‘Each Zone Face Lift treatment is bespoke, completely customised to the client, and combines a deeply restorative experience with an insightful reading of reflex points on the face. The face has an intricate mapping system of the body and by gently massaging facial reflexology points it can help the body heal. Emotions are held in the face and these gently melt away leaving you feeling calm and peaceful as the bodies own healing mechanisms are activated.’

After a brief run-through of my medical history and current concerns I settled down on the treatment bed and was swiftly cocooned in a blanket, with plump pillows placed beneath my knees and neck. Neatly laid out beside the bed were an armoury of tools including Jade Gua Sha, acupressure dermal rollers and quartz crystals. The treatment began with a cleanse, tone and exfoliation, whilst Palo Santo drifted around me to remove any negative energy. After a face mask was applied, Helen performed a mini reflexology session, which took me into a deep state of relaxation. I didn’t want it to end, and I think I actually drooled at one point. I have enjoyed many reflexology treatments over the years and can honestly say Helen is up there with the best. After a quick cleanse, Helen began to massage the award-winning Amethyst Crystal-Infused Elixir into my skin. An hour of rolls, sweeps, prods and strokes using the tools or her fingers: slapping, pushing, pinching, I could physically feel my skin lifting. My facial tension vanished, and I was amazed to find at the end of the session the hollows around my eyes were plumped up and
my cheekbones more contoured. The next morning my skin looked even more radiant, my mind felt clearer, and my spirit was lifted. I felt like I had just come back from a holiday. The Zone Facial life is so much more than a beauty treatment, it balances the mind body and soul - the glowing skin is just a bonus. While a course of 12 sessions is the ideal – the repetition apparently helps re-train fixed facial muscles – the effects are noticeable from one treatment alone, perfect as a treat, gift or for a special event.
A Zone Facelift costs 75 euros for 75 mins. Mobile treatments are available. For treatments and booking call 0034 634 802 810 www.reflexology-marbella.com

It’s April and we are welcoming Spring! The sun is shining and the aroma of the flowers is spectacular as they come into bloom! Here in Marbella we all need to be ready to embrace, adapt and respond with grace as we all accept the effects the recent pandemic has had on our community. Supporting our colleagues and small businesses could not be more essential as we all work together to make this beautiful town a place to come and enjoy once again in peace and harmony.
Embracing The World with CBD Confidence It has been super tough for us all this past year, businesses closing, never knowing what restrictions are coming in, and many of us including myself missing family and loved ones due to travel restrictions! You just couldn’t make this stuff up! So how can we at TLE assist … by helping you to be come your own

So let’s Refresh our Memories …. What is CBD? One of the most amazing things about working with cannabis is seeing the benefits first hand of the people that use it. You can start to take it to help with sleep but you realise its also helping you with your mood too. But why is this? CBD is a cannabinoid and is part of the cannabis plant, its just one of its many compounds, there are actually 152 including the most well known THC! But this stuff doesn’t get you high
but improves your state of wellness by interacting with an integral part of us we call “The Endocannabinoid System”. Due to the fact that the plants phytocannabinoids react to the receptors in our body called CB1 and CB2 by trying to bring it into balance or homeostasis. Unlike a pharmaceutical product that targets the symptom,
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
Magdalena works with you to find out how your feeling to develop the perfect plan through a series of sessions. When you experience an Elite CBD massage its very difficult to demand anything less! The receptors in the skin work in harmony with the cannabinoids in the plant leaving the body fully relaxed but your mind focused!
Getting the Correct Dosage
cannabinoids infiltrate the whole system helping to reduce inflammation, ease pain, improve sleep and regulate hormones. Below is a table to show you what CBD helps with in the body.
Working with Wellbeing We have aligned ourselves with the best from the cannabis industry being able to work with local and European farms and having a unique relationship with our processing partners to ensure we are the best in the industry. We have now built valuable partnerships with local organic restaurants, spas and wellness centres to provide our clients with the right expert to suit their wellness needs. You can access our practitioners through their locations or now virtually online! We can provide nutritional guidance with recipes that can be found on our website and Instagram on how to top up your cannabinoids on a daily basis!
and really work to assist our own peace of mind and body. Laughter is great to lift your mood so remember to turn off the news and stick on a light comedy! Better still just get out of the house and breathe in some fresh air on a gorgeous walk!
TLE CBD Mindful Massages with Magdalena Aaura in Puerto Banus truly caters for your wellness needs by addressing the individual client. Using our unique massage oils infused with CBD and essential aromas we stimulate your senses and activate your receptors that are present in your largest organ the skin. We all respond differently to therapies and analysing what will work for you is challenging and this is why visiting a trained specialist is a fantastic option.
When I have a client that is afraid of taking CBD for the first time or who has had little or no response I now can offer a solution! The DNA testing kit! This kit not only allows you to see what amount of CBD your body requires but also gives you the alternative methods with guidance of products too! Results are back within 6 days as we have secured a great laboratory in Portugal! We aspire to be the best to help you on your own path! Doctors that are interested in prescribing cannabis will find this latest scientific technology a great tool to help them get started. We all need to work at being wellness warriors so if CBD isn’t working for you, or you just can’t seem to feel normal, don’t give up reach out we might have the solution!
You can now book an appointment to see me at Aaura Clinic where I can give you a DNA testing and a cannabinoid consultation.
Combining CBD Therapies Being in a continuous state of fight or flight mode is driving us insane but using CBD as a treatment can really help. Combining this with a CBD massage or healing therapy can help your body to relax and rejuvenate which is the most important thing to help alleviate stress and anxious symptoms! We have a fantastic range of products from tinctures to our new fabulous gummies and capsules to give you all the cannabinoids you need. There are other ways to beat the blues and creeping of anxiety and that is through mediation, exercise and of course eating the right things. But we need to be in charge of our own destiny
Empowering yourself has never been so vital as isolation is causing many of us to look within. Through my research I discovered a clinical study that was carried out with rats in isolation… they found it depleted their cannabinoids! Once they were returned to social activities their cannabinoids increased! Hence the reason we are all feeling low due to the lack of cuddles and touching that has been missing from our lives over the past year.

We understand that expressions of thanks and appreciation help to build and sustain the social bonds which positively underpin our friendships, work dynamics and longterm relationships, but despite playing a significant role in most philosophies, cultures and organised religions, as a subject of neuropsychological research, the concept of gratitude has only been more deeply explored in the last couple of decades. As opposed to the rote, unconscious result of conditioning or a symptom of the burgeoning sport of virtue signalling, we’re now being encouraged to treat gratitude, like so much else today, with a more mindful approach if we’re to both reap, and sow the benefits. Scientific studies evidence that adopting conscious gratitude into our everyday lives has huge benefits on our mental and even physical wellbeing. Whether

through a kind word, act or gesture, the giving and receiving of good will and thankfulness release dopamine, the brain’s feel-good neurotransmitter. You may also receive an endorphin hit, capable of reducing pain and inducing euphoria. That fuzzy feeling you get when you do something good is not just imagined, it’s chemical. For research participants of studies into gratitude, a marked reduction in the hormone cortisol meant lower stress levels, better cardiac function and improved resilience to negative experiences and stressors. By curbing our stress hormones and better regulating our autonomic nervous system functions, results demonstrate gratitude appreciably combats anxiety and depression, allowing us to gain broader perception and awareness of our present circumstances and better tackle life’s obstacles. As sufferers of depression will tell you, get-up-andgo can be a problem, but gratitude has been positively linked to vitality, energy and motivation. This improved mood increases productivity and the effect can be contagious - did you work harder for the surly, uninterested, perpetually negative boss or the friendly, positive boss who recognised and validated your efforts?... What? The first one??.... “it was easier to get away with doing nothing” ???... Ok, you’re a blagger. You probably didn’t even pay for this magazine!
THE MESSAGE IS CLEAR: GIVE GENUINE THANKS WHEN YOUR LOVED ONE TAKES THE BINS OUT AND YOU'LL LIVE TO BE 100. Regardless, an outlook underpinned by gratitude will benefit not just you personally, but those in your orbit. Couple studies observed those partnerships where individuals frequently expressed their gratitude to each other
were the ones most likely to maintain, fostering mutual trust and loyalty. The life expectancy of those in happy partnerships is also longer than that of singletons. The message is clear: give genuine thanks when your loved one takes the bins out and you’ll live to be 100. And by activating your brain’s hypothalamus through the giving and receiving of simple acts of kindness, you’ll also promote deeper, healthier sleep. Healthy sleep is another vital cornerstone of healthy mind and body longevity. Experts agree writing letters of gratitude, keeping a gratitude journal
or regularly vocalising our gratitude in a mindful manner builds positive results over time. If gratitude doesn’t spring forth immediately, don’t panic, especially given the widespread strain of the pandemic in an already strained modern world. There’s probably tons you’re grateful for without consciously recognising it and there’s nothing wrong with starting small. You’re glad the sun’s out. You’re happy there’s enough milk in the fridge at breakfast. You’re happy you’ve got a fridge... in a house... And if you don’t have these things, that doesn’t mean you can’t be grateful or fulfilled by what you do have.
“It’s not happiness that brings us gratitude. It’s gratitude that brings us happiness” (Anonymous) Like any muscle, gratitude is something we can exercise, noticing our emotional awareness increase as we do. Each morning, ruminate on and record three things (events, people, objects, acts..) which you’re thankful for and you may find in time that that mindfulness carries over into the rest of your day. During low moments, looking back at the people and things you’re grateful for can be very grounding and therapeutic. And don’t forget to be grateful for yourself. Self-love (stop sniggering!) is arguably as important as empathy for others. Though the thought may initially induce eyerolling, experts advise standing in front of the mirror, recognising your qualities and complimenting yourself aloud with words such as beautiful, kind, loving (Just don’t get caught doing it by your mates or there’ll be some other words thrown around). And if the exercise descends into an “Are you talking to me? Are YOU talking to ME??!” Taxi Driver impersonation, just go with that too. Thanks for reading.

See you on the tee With a bit of luck, change is on its way and normality is starting to return, to the effect that my firm have decided to sponsor the La Sala Golf Society tournament which consists of 9 golf competitions played on various courses along the coast. The first took place on March 27th, 2021 at the Seve Ballesteros designed course, Valle Romano. On average, 22 teams of four compete in an overall competition in addition to team competitions on the day. Players meet at 9.30am for a gunshot start. During play we sponsor various additional prizes such as ‘Nearest to the Pin’ and ‘Longest Drive’. On the 10th hole players are offered beverages and snacks. Following 4 hours of golf everyone enjoys a complementary 3-course lunch at La Sala Restaurant with live music and free bar. The golf society has been running for 10 years and has a strong following with players from around Europe flying down to participate. Great fun, great golf and a great event to be part of.

Place your bids! Fabulous French inspired villa goes up for April auction Last month I talked to you about the rise in properties being sold by auction and this month our first listing goes to auction from 22nd - 27th of April 2021. Interest has been enormous so far with potential buyers from all over the world including the Far East, Middle East, the States and of course Europe. This elegant French inspired five-bedroom country home straight out of a Jane Austin novel, situated in the exclusive gated urbanisation of Puerto del Almendro, frontline golf and minutes from the famous residential Country Club La Zagaleta, one of the best addresses in the world, is going into auction with no reserve but a guide price of €3.4 million euros. Pre-auction bids have already come in, but my clients, the vendors, have decided to wait till the online bidding starts. With 700m2 of accommodation the property is surrounded by 2000m2 of garden and fantastic opportunity for a willing buyer to achieve an amazing purchase of a suitable choice of residence for formal entertaining or as a tranquil summer retreat. On the 30th of March we hosted our first ‘Cocktail Launch’ in over 14 months where guests were invited to stroll through the property with a glass of cava in hand while nibbling on a selection of canapés – pure joy to be able to network again although due to restrictions, invitations were by appointment only. We await a positive outcome knowing the enormous interest shown.

HOW DOES AN INTERIOR DESIGNER BECOME A HEALER? MIRA KORTBAWI PROPOSES PRIVATE CONSULTING VISITS IN MARBELLA TO ENERGISE YOUR HOME USING FENG SHUI PRINCIPLES. Why do we suddenly feel tired or depressed in a specific area of our home?
We were impressed by the spiritual approach of Mira Kortbawi who deeply studied the art of placement in interior design and who throws conferences and organises seminars about the way you can energise your interior and the benefits for our physical and spiritual wellness: “The key? I refer to a very ancient chinese philosophy called feng shui (feng =wind / shui= water). When these 2 elements of nature are combined, they bring energy to your home. That is called «shi». Basically, when i use the balance of five elements of nature in any given space, I increase its energy level and keep my clients healthy. As soon as I enter a place, i feel right away if it lacks energy. Sometimes it only takes some light replacements, or changing the way you position your sofa or tv! Your headboard location for example affects your sleep. When you are surrounded by good «shi», you will be surrounded by good fortune, and it will bring happiness and harmony to your spirit.”

The Talk of the Town Why has Vista Lago Residences become the most talked about new luxury development in recent years? We look at what professionls in the industry are saying about it.
Article by Vivion O’Kelly, Images Courtesy of BRIGHT
Knowing who we truly are is information most of us are lucky enough to have zero knowledge of. Knowing what people truly think we are is information most of us choose to have zero knowledge of. Wanting to know who we truly are means asking others, and that takes a great leap of faith. But BRIGHT, developers of luxury properties in Southern Spain and, of course, Vista Lago, have faith in what they believe to be the very best luxury

property development on the Costa del Sol in recent times. This is their Vista Lago Residences project, and here we look at what some of the top professionals in the business have said about it. They have plenty to say about it, because there are many good reasons to choose a Vista Lago villa, quite apart from the fact that it is located close to the most prestigious tourism resort in Spain, that it is right beside a new National Park, that is has been designed
by one of the most reputable architecture and design firms in Europe, that it comprises 18 super-luxury villas that are all different, that all properties are sustainable to a degree quite unusual in Europe as a whole, that the area it is located in, Real de la Quinta, boasts a range of leisure facilities worthy of any luxurious hotel anywhere in the world, including an artificial lake with its very own beach and beach club, and that each villa has been designed to the highest standards possible in today’s world.

BRIGHT is elevating the level of offered properties on the market, offering the most stunning design and innovation beside a very substantial living solution. This product is definitely much desired by the kind of international clientele that E&V deals with. We are thrilled to offer these villas to our selected upmarket international clients, and believe that this kind of perfection is well needed in this vivid market. Together with our excellent sales force, BRIGHT and E&V have all the needed structure to be a winning team. It’s a fantastic location and by far one of our favourites, for me it’s the best of everything, you have the stunning, panoramic, elevated views, some of the best onsite facilities, and only a short drive away from everything. When the area is developed we expect it to be one of the best places to live not only locally, but worldwide.

Keep it Real
(Talking about Real de La Quinta) “A high-quality resort that’s sustainable for the environment, completely integrated with nature and transmits the lively and positive side of Marbella, alongside the innovative and practical smart living philosophy of Northern European countries”. Rick Volpe, Architect and design consultant
(Talking about Real de La Quinta) “From where we are you can see three countries and two continents…! That’s just an astounding place to be, you don’t find sites like that!” Joseph Ginther, Architect.
Vista Lago Residences is an excellent project that the market needed. The design of the villas is spectacular in every single way. We strongly believe that this project is one of the most impressive ones currently on the market. Vista Lago villas are timeless properties that can suit basically any type of buyer looking for a 21st century modern living on the Costa del Sol. I think that this project can perfectly suit a family, a young couple, a retired couple, etc. The countryside is becoming more of a sought after lifestyle, depending on the lifestyle the buyer is looking for. Unfortunately in Marbella it is difficult to be close to the sea and have a modern property. Sometimes the sacrifice to have an ultra-modern home is to go a little away from the coast. However, the views are breath taking and the properties are a good value for money as per their proximity to all amenities, views and design. Margareta Stjernström, Owner of Mas Property Marbella

Panorama has always associated itself with the highest quality properties for sale in the Marbella area. BRIGHT developments represent quality on all possible levels: location, extraordinary design and attention to detail, highest quality in finishes and in customer service. And of course, with all the necessary legal guarantees. Quality is what this next decade is all about. Quality is what Marbella has always been about. Christopher Clover, Managing Director of Panorama
Keep it Real
A development to be really proud of. Nothing stands in the way of the view. In all 18 villas the windows slide into the wall, to bring the living area out into the terrace, becoming an extension of the house itself. Even closed, you see very little of the window frame. All villas are open plan, with no unecessary walls in the living spaces and columns reduced to the minimum. Our design philosophy is to devote as much thought, cost and innovation to the interior of the houses as the exteriors. All the furniture in the villas has been chosen or designed exclusively for them, either by UDesign or by other top designers, and is thus unavailable on the open market. There is nowhere else like it in Europe. Jason Harris, CEO and Creative Director of UDesign
So there we have it, a brief roundup of the most talked about luxury development of the new millennium in Spain. BRIGHT are very proud of what they have achieved with this exceptional project, and happy knowing that what others truly think of them is who they truly are. If you would like more information on Vista Lago Residences, contact the BRIGHT Sales Team, who would be delighted to arrange a presentation in their showroom, or arrange for a video call if you are unable to come to Marbella right now.

MY TOP 5 HOME DECOR ACCESSORIES A house never feels like a home without the correct home decor accessories. Whether it’s decorating my own home, a home for a client, or installing a project in a show home for sale, details are key in creating the final look. When it comes to a client’s project, it’s so
important to find out their interests and preferences in order to inject more of their personality throughout their home whether it be a book about their top travel destination, their most treasured perfume on the vanity unit, or a fresh bouquet of their favourite flowers. After
experimenting with different accessories in different projects, here are a few of my absolute favourite pieces that create an immediate stylish and warm touch in a home!
Coffee Table Books Year by year, I love adding a few coffee table books to my own personal collection and I like to have them dotted around in order to thread my interests throughout my entire home. I especially love architectural, fashion, interiors or travel books in an extra-large format.

Coffee books are beautiful to place on a coffee table in a stack of two or three (odd numbered groupings always work!), on a shelf perched up, or sat wide open on a page - in this case it’s always a nice surprise to come across the book open at a new page filled with beautiful extra-large images. Also, when styling your coffee books, consider the colours of the book’s jacket and how it complements the overall environment. If you prefer, you can take the jacket off and just go with the book’s beautiful bare cover! Here is a selection of my favourite coffee table books to style across a home:

One of my favourite winding down rituals after a long day is to light a few candles, and they have always been an absolute essential throughout my home! Not only do scented candles act as aromatherapy, but candles also allow for dimmer lighting in the evenings, which is an amazing way to let your mind know that it’s time to relax and start preparing for bedtime. However, when selecting candles, it’s important to consider several factors. Each person is unique and has their own set of preferences, therefore certain scents will be more appealing than others. Some people adhere to a vegan and natural lifestyle, so the scents they choose and the ingredients in their candles need to suit that lifestyle. Another important factor to consider is the purpose of the candle. Determining if it is for relaxation or to mask odours helps to narrow down the fragrance options. For a romantic dinner, there is nothing more perfect for setting the right mood than a few candles on the table. However, the scent needs to be light and well partnered with the meal – musky or heavily scented candles are too powerful for this purpose. Instead, choose soft scents that will complement. The scent of herbs and

ginger, for example, pairs well with starchy foods like pasta or potatoes. This type of scent has the added benefit of being refreshing after your meal, clearing out the lingering aroma of food. I find it particularly enhances the experience of an after-dinner digestif!
Pots & Vases Vases are pieces that can be very functional, however they can also add a sculptural element to a space even when they aren’t filled with flowers or foliage. Combining pots and vases of different shapes, sizes, heights and finishes in a tasteful manner creates a lovely mismatched and curated feel. In projects I like to place them on coffee tables, on shelves, on a console table or nightstand, and there’s a wide range of different vases to choose from according to the style you want to achieve!

What makes a vase a statement piece? It can be a striking colour or unique design, but it can also be its size. Large scale statement vases are perfect for
entryways, exteriors or dining rooms, handling a large floral arrangement or bundles of branches. Scale is important however when choosing statement pieces, and they’re best used in spacious environments with high ceilings! Accent vases are smaller scaled ones, making them perfect for bookcases, nightstands, side tables and bathroom vanities. Because of their smaller size, it’s easier to experiment with new shapes and patterns that you may feel wary of on a larger scale. If you’re wanting to build your own collection of pretty vases, I suggest starting here! Heirloom vases are either hand-made by independent artisans, or antique and one of a kind. These feel extra special because they have a unique story attached to them, whether they were handmade in Hawaii or sourced from France. They are great conversation starters and will make an excellent addition to anyone’s collection. Heirloom pieces can range in price from very affordable to investment pieces, but they’re meant to be treasured and hopefully passed down to future generations.

Fresh Flowers & Plants
This essential home decor element ties in perfectly with the previous one, as a charming way to bring an instant touch of luxury into your home is with a fresh bouquet of flowers. Fresh flowers inspire an immediate lift and add interest to any room. They help to bring soft lines into a space that can otherwise be filled with hard surfaces. Flower arrangements can also be a wonderful way to draw attention to features of an interior: a tall arrangement, for example, can direct the eye towards the ceiling height of a space. However, you don’t necessarily have to match your floral arrangements to your
interiors, but complement them instead. If your home is a palette of soft pinks, for example, choose clean white flowers or go for a stronger shade of pink that will stand out. Another beautiful option is dry flowers that can add a beautiful lasting touch too! My favourite? White oriental lilies, as they have a beautiful, sweet scent that fills any room the moment you walk in. Quick tip: I always try to remove the pollen before it falls from the flowers as it can have a damaging impact on soft furnishings such as fabrics and carpets.
Textiles
Textiles are such an important part of dressing up a room as they provide much more than just a splash of colour in an otherwise neutral space. From throw pillows, rugs, blankets and wall tapestries, there are so many ways to incorporate them in a beautiful way, as fabrics add warmth, texture, and when chosen carefully, can even set the tone for each room. I’m a big fan of using materials for living environments, such as linen, cotton, wool or alpaca. With such materials comes a timeless, adaptable and lasting aesthetic. Plus, they normally are better for the environment than man-made fibres. What I find truly special, are textiles that come with a narrative, as they are likely to hold much longer appeal! My collection at home ranges from inherited family pieces, textiles made by friends, and especially pieces picked up on travels like a Berber carpet from a trip to Merzouga, or a traditional mapuche handmade wall tapestry picked up while exploring the Southern region of the Patagonia. Knowing a little more about the story behind a piece will make it much more valuable to you!

Suite Dreams In this article we take a closer look at Villa Nuraya’s master suite, as an example of the best of its kind, designed by the UDesign team. It could, perhaps, be better described as a large personal living space that is also used for sleeping in, because this suite has been designed as a great deal more than a room with a bed in it.
92
Home Coture
“This is very much a sitting room,” says Jason Harris, CEO and Creative Director of UDesign. “A place to bring friends into, to share a drink with them and chat, which you would hardly do in the case of a normal bedroom.” The bed is situated in the centre of one half of the room, occupying a relatively small part of the entire suite, with a large wallpaper backdrop behind it, whose trompe l’oeil effect makes us believe we are looking at a mirror shattered in a vertical linear pattern.

“You can walk around the bed, which is always more elegant than having it right up against the wall. You wouldn’t put a sofa up against a piece of beautiful wallpaper, because you need to see and appreciate it. The lights and bedside tables are also well away from the wall, adding to the grandeur of the room,” says Jason. “The beautiful ceiling lights might seem more appropriate for a lounge downstairs. In fact, all these elements could be in any room in the house. But this is a room you’d want to spend time in, rather than just using it to sleep in.” The shattered mirror-effect wallpaper with a flower theme is echoed in other parts of the room as well, reinforcing the visual unity of the entire space. Colours are also reflected throughout, in the cushions, the bed cover and pillows, the footstools and the natural greenery of the potted plants. The wallpaper becomes the inspiration for the room, while its occupants might well be inspired by the bronze sculpture on the marble plinth. Looking at the images we can see that at least half the main living area is just that: a living room space, complete with comfortable armchairs, coffee table and a fireplace. So is this a living room with a bed, or a bedroom with a living room? Hard to tell, because that’s the way it was designed. “The four chairs swivel, allowing you to sit comfortably and enjoy the views in any direction, and you have the space to entertain more than one friend in,” Jason tells us. “It’s a great room to sit and have a chat in, and even on your own, you have what amounts to a selfcontained apartment as your bedroom, so you can start your day with a morning coffee there if you wish, before going downstairs for a more substantial breakfast.”

THE BATH IS A TRUE WORK OF ART, WHERE FORM AND FUNCTION MEET TO CREATE SOMETHING WONDERFUL TO SIMPLY LOOK AT WHEN NOT IN USE Jason is especially proud of the bathroom: “It has no doors, except of course where absolutely necessary. You can access it from the left or the right of the Diana Watson flower mural, and there are two of everything apart from the extraordinary bath in the middle. There’s a comfortable sofa there, because this too is a kind of multi-purpose room. We all walk around with our phones these days, even in the bathroom, but here you can sit down and chat if caught on the hop. And drying your feet, for example, you can sit down and do it in comfort, rather than jumping about like a onelegged kangaroo.”
There is indeed a pair of everything, from wash handbasins to showers, towels and toilets. “You share the bathroom but not everything in it”, says Jason. “For some busy couples, it’s the only quality time they spend together on their own in the entire day.” The bath is a true work of art, where form and function meet to create something wonderful to simply look at when not in use, and the shower area makes a feature of the entire end wall. There are two walk-in wardrobes, of course, situated between the bed and the bathroom.” “Elegance, opulence, comfort and functionality: it’s all there in a bedroom suite that anybody would be happy to stay in and relax, and that’s exactly what
we were aiming for”, he adds, leaving us to enjoy the images and, very probably, to agree with him. Villa Nuraya: Architecture & Interior Design by UDesign:

COSTA CUISINE
s you know, food waste is a topic that is so close to my heart. I know it’s not always simple and sometimes it’s just easier to toss that stale loaf of bread or throw away that limp looking carrot that somehow rolled to the back of the fridge.
A
Bettina, our resident foodie, offers her insider knowledge on plant based cuisine and takes us on a culinary journey as she travels the world in search of gastronomic inspiration
Wastey NOT
But the world is currently in a state of a major food pandemic and if we don’t try and make changes now the damage is going to be irreversible. I try and adopt simple practices into my daily life to help cut down on food waste (and save on money) – I also make sure that all of my recipes, in both of my books – Happy Food and The 7 Day Vegan Challenge and any recipes that I share on social media or here are easily scalable to be suitable and accessible for families of all sizes. I also include in a little handy reminder on all of my recipes to show you just how long it will last in the fridge and if they are freezer-friendly (note: 99% of them are!) The freezer is one of your best friends when it comes to utilising the food you have and using up every last delicious morsel. So, make sure to dust away those preconcept notions that the freezer is just for frozen peas, smiley potato faces and ice-cream – sub-zero has never been cooler – so make sure you befriend it.
reduce p l e h o t top tips 0 1 y m e Here ar aste w d oo f r you
1. Write a list
Make sure you don’t impulse purchase and double-up on ingredients by making (and sticking) to a shopping list. Make sure to do a quick fridge and freezer sweep before you go or create a list of the contents inside your appliances and stick it on the outside, so you don’t have to keep rummaging inside - to make sure you’re only buying the ingredients you need (and a sneaky extra treat on the side too, of course)
2. Remember FIFO or LILO Adopt the professional chef’s attitude and remember First In, First Out or Last In, Last Out. Make sure to place all your newly brought items to the back of the fridge or freezer as their dates and quality will be longer than the products you already have. This is a great way to also clean the fridge in-between fills. Once you have shopped – pull everything out – give it a good squeaky clean – and pop your newly brought items to the back and the pulled-out ones in front so they get used first.
100
3. Buy (certain) products in bulk Buying in bulk can be great – but be a little picky about it. If you’re shopping for certain ingredients and see that item on a 2-4-1 offer, but know you’re only going to use the amount you went in for – those saved pennies you think you’re saving, will actually be a huge waste in all senses. Save bulk buying for items that won’t go bad quickly, like dried goods and store-cupboard products.
4. Plan ahead This is such a handy routine to adopt. Find some time each week to plan the week ahead meals. Have a look at what you have in your household that needs using up, either by having a quick look, or if you have adopted the contents planner from tip #1, have a quick read through and plan your meals around these ingredients without having to add additional ones in. For the days where you have nothing in, or only half a meal – plan it around that. This way you know what you need to pop on your shopping list and it gives you some delicious meals to look forward too, rather than just winging it.
COSTA CUISINE
5. Invest in an ice-cube tray Ice-cube trays are a super versatile tool and can be used for a lot more than just freezing water for your favourite tipple on a summer day. Here’s just a few of the things you can do with them; adopt the above method. Once your tray is frozen, pop out the cubes and into a freezer-safe container or bag and label it correctly. - Excess coffee or wine? Freeze into cubes. Wine cubes can be added to stocks and sauces, and pop frozen coffee cubes into cold milk or tonic water for a refreshing drink. - Herbs: such as coriander, basil, parsley or mint. Remove the leaves and chop. Pop into the tray and cover with water. These can be popped into any dish to
6. Utilise yours and the supermarkets freezer Like i said before – your freezer is cool again and you need to be utilising it. The quality of frozen goods has dramatically increased over the last few years, with a lot of products containing the essential nutrients locked in – so, for ingredients you like to use, but don’t use all that often – check the supermarkets freezer aisles. You can get everything from sliced onions, to mango chunks. And when you’re at home and have a glut of ingredients – pop them in the freezer rather than letting them go to waste. You can even buy fresh products and have half now and freeze half for later such as fresh greens: broccoli, peas, beans or spinach – blanch in boiling water till al dente, drain and plunge into ice-water. Wait till cold, drain well and then freeze. Refresh in boiling water or dropping into stews, curries or
soups. Another great tip is to slice your bread and freeze – then only remove the slices you need at a time.
add a flavour bomb and even used to liven up a g+t. - Marinades and pastes: made too much? Freeze and the just defrost to marinate your chosen product or melt in the pan before sautéing your veggies. - Flavoured butters and oils: use up leftover herbs and spices by infusing into oil or butter. These can then be added to a wide variety of dishes straight from the freezer. - Fruit juice: squeeze any citrus fruits while they’re fresh then pop in the freezer. They defrost almost as good as new and saves a whole bunch of time and effort (and, of course… waste).
sure to label everything that goes in with a date if you are removing its packaging.
9. Learn to adapt and 7. Use up your leftovers make recipes your own There are so many different ways you can utilise leftovers. You can re-heat and enjoy as they were, or you can reinvent them and repurpose them into something brand-new. Use leftover tomato-based sauces to make pizzas, turn chilli’s or curry based leftovers into taco or burrito fillings, or stuff inside a jacket potato, pasta leftovers can be turned into fritters or panfried ‘arancini’ style balls and leftover veg of any kind can be added to a ‘meat’ ball or falafel mixture. And don’t forget about produce leftover’s either – make pesto from spinach or carrot tops, whizz up stale bread to make crumbs then sprinkle over soups or casseroles, or make bread and butter puddings or a new take on a tiramisu.
8. Keep your stash fresh To give your produce the best quality life so you can enjoy the most of their quality make sure to store them correctly. Keep products that have a strong odour in air-tight containers – remove packaging from fruits and vegetables (but don’t wash them until you’re ready to use them, as this dampness can encourage bacteria to grow) and place in the crisper drawer with paper or cloth towels to soak up any moisture. Make sure not to over-pack or over- stock your fridge, it needs adequate air flow in order to keep everything fresh. Don’t put warm foods in the fridge until completely cooled down. When freezing products – don’t freeze whole, slice items such as onions, apples and bananas and lay on a baking tray and freeze. Once frozen transfer into freezer suitable containers. And make
Don’t worry if you don’t have a certain ingredient – purchasing one off products to create one off recipes is a no-no. Chances are that paste or spice will never be used again. Instead look for alternative spices or ingredients that you have at home that could work. Also, feel free to get creative and add in those extra veggies in the fridge to whatever dish you’re creating – you don’t have to follow the recipes exact. Make them your own.
10. Search in your cupboard for hidden treasures Chances are we have some hidden gems in the backs of our cupboards from shopping trips long gone. Make sure to utilise these before they go to waste. Use a combination of the tips above and add to different recipes, infuse into another product and freeze, or plan a meal around it. Cooking isn’t all about the fresh produce so don’t neglect your cupboards either.
Make sure to be fifo’ing them too! 101

New Summer Collection Launching this month is designer, Virginia Macari’s brand new sixth collection.
Beach Moves Local yoga instructor, Margaret Buchanan, is set to bring her unique Strala style yoga classes to the beachfront of Puerto Banus. The classes will take place every Tuesday and Friday morning at 10am at La Sala by the Sea, on the beach near Puerto Banus and the Gran Hotel Guadalpin Banus.
With every new release, Virginia continues to reinvent swimwear with beautiful and bold designs and styles that express her own exuberance for life and fierce femininity. The collection is produced in their own Atelier in Marbella. Local artisans with years of experience, skill and devotion to the finest quality products create every piece, one swimsuit at a time. Virginia Macari aims to fundamentally change fashion for everybody involved, the customer, the employees and the environment. They believe that apparel production can and must be improved as it is an industry that is harmful to the environment and people who make the garments.
Margaret first practiced yoga when she was pregnant with her eldest daughter, who is now 32. Having stumbled across her passion, she went on to train as a teacher completing training in both Thailand and Bali, before discovering Strala in New York City in 2014. This was the turning point for Margaret and she believes that “Strala is not about reaching a goal or a perfect pose, it is about enjoying the journey and creating an experience”. Classes are priced at just 10€. For further information or to reserve your place, please contact Margaret on +34 647 025 839.
They have shown that change is possible, if we are willing to embrace it, and that technology can help us reimagine garment production and distribution processes. Using ECONYL® regenerated nylon fibre from fishnets and other nylon waste, Virginia Macari demonstrates chic and sustainability are inseparable.

Something to Celebrate Following her recent appearance on James Martin’s Saturday Morning, our regular contributor Bettina Campolucci Bordi is celebrating the launch of her new book CELEBRATE! The cover design is not yet finalised but the book is filled with plant based recipes fit for any occasion. Bettina told us “I am so proud of this one and so far it has been the hardest one to write. I spent all of 2020 recipe testing and writing about celebrations, birthday parties, Easter and Christmas. That was not an easy task as you can imagine. This time around there are plant based recipes for every occasion (including lots of baking). I have included gluten which is a new thing for me but dont worry there are plenty of gluten free options too. I am so excited about this one and hope you are too.” The new book can be pre-ordered on www.amazon.es

Pandemic no Problem for Promas
Opening a world of opportunities to children and young people
Renowned Homebuilders Promas have recently undertaken a complete contemporary reform on a 40 year old property despite the client only being able to visit Spain once during the whole process! Their in-house architects drew up and submitted the plans to town hall and 3D imagery to the client and delivered the finished project in just nine months. Much to the clients delight, “I can’t recommend Promas enough, they held our hand throughout the entire process and delivered incredible results exactly as outlined… amazing”.

Technology Doubles the Interest According to Engel&Völkers data, luxury property sales have adapted to new needs through specialised online tours. Digital adaptation has allowed Marbella’s real estate sector to maintain and even grow during 2021 despite confinement and mobility restrictions. Virtual visits and contact via the web and various technological applications have doubled the number of enquiries and increased sales of luxury homes without even seeing them physically. Engel&Völkers goes onto explain how buyers, both national and international, are closing the sales process in just one week. To meet this demand, E&V offers its clients their Owner App, an application where owners can follow in detail the entire process of selling their property. It is an exclusive tool that, in addition to facilitating direct contact with the agent, gives the client access to all the relevant information about the property, allowing the owner to get an idea of the interest their home receives in the real estate market. “We have sold several properties through virtual tours, three of them to German clients. We are finding that offers are being made much faster than ever before, people are deciding to buy in less time, and sales procedures are being completed more quickly,” states Smadar Kahana, director of E&V Marbella.
106
As for the origin of the clients, the national market has taken over in search of comfort and the best quality of life offered by the Costa del Sol, representing 52% of buyers during the penultimate quarter of 2020, compared to 24% in 2019. This is followed by Germany, Scandinavian countries, Benelux, UK and France. In addition to its four offices, E&V Marbella now has a new office in the Guadalmina Commercial.
