PUBLISHER’S LETTER

LOCATION LOCATION INFLATION So that was July! Above average searing heat and dry winds, leading to the almost inevitable wildfires and destruction of more of our beautiful nature areas. This devastating news was partially offset by a huge influx of more than welcome visitors, collectively helping local businesses balance the books after a few indifferent seasons. But the real news, (no, not the altercation at a local club or an indignant soon to be ex-prime minister) is inflation. “Much worse,” than experts predicted, (how expert can they be!) Increases in Worldwide energy costs have seemingly impacted everything we consume. The situation is so extreme nobody really wants to debate it as the likely scenario is so unpalatable. Locally, restaurants have seen 40% plus increases in everything from cooking oil to foodstuffs. Once you factor in staff shortages coastwide

and rising energy costs you get an idea of how precarious the future looks.

surcharges to offset paper production costs, whilst the raw material itself has increased 112% in the last 14 months. At a time where everyone talks about sustainability, you have to wonder what trades are actually sustainable in the long term. Factor in an ever-increasing governmental thirst for a cashless society and the future business landscape will require skilful navigation. Now that I have cheered you all up, we can move on to August

DENMARK'S LARGEST REAL ESTATE AGENT ON THE COSTA DEL SOL When you buy or sell a house through Mojo Estates, we’ll support you every step of the way – before, during and after the completion. Everything under one roof,

HOUSE of MOJO

8 Families sharing concept Get even closer to the dream home on the Costa del Sol for a lower deposit. 8 families buy a home together. This means that each family only has to pay 12,5% of the price and has the house available for 6 weeks and 2 days a year.

Buy your dream house We have access to all homes on the market. You will be met by an experienced team of brokers who speak your language and understand your needs. We guide you safely through everything with a wide range of services that you will not find with other brokers here on the coast.

Real Estate Investment Trust Mojo Capitals is a private equity fund that focuses on giving its shareholders an expected return of 60% after tax during the fund's lifetime (up to 6 years). The return is achieved through investments in housing and construction projects on the Costa del Sol. This is often done through attractive purchases, and thorough renovations, rentals for a period until a divestment takes place again within a shorter number of years.

Project Investment Mojo Invest is for those investors who would like to invest in property, land and development projects on the Costa del Sol, and who are looking for an experienced partner with a foundation and an organisation to make things happen.

Rental Agency If you are thinking about investing in a house on the Costa del Sol, you should also consider whether you want to rent it out when you don’t stay there yourself. This is how your investment can make a return already. And your home can almost finance itself – depending on how often you want to rent it out.

THE MAGIC of I had the pleasure of meeting Per Møensted and Jacob Johansen who are the Mr Mo and Mr Jo who make up Mojo Estates. It isn’t a coincidence that the dynamic Danish duo’s contracted surnames, which put the mojo into the House of Mojo, also mean personal magnetism, sex appeal and supernatural skill. Together they are an explosive combination, and with their positive and personable attitudes, it is no wonder they are creating a significant impact on the Costa del Sol real estate market. Mojo means having a magic charm, being influential and successful. We asked the boys how they preserve their mojo? “Through all of the positive people that we are blessed to help and work with every day”. They try to pass on their mojo to others who maybe have lost theirs.

28

Southern Spain is the perfect place for investors as it has the Mediterranean climate, a luxury lifestyle and tranquil beaches, but if you partner that formula with Mojo Estates and add the insider knowledge on the tax secrets they can offer, then you have the magic charm for success. The team has an honest and direct approach to finance as investment and profit are words that are synonymous with the House of Mojo. The Costa area makes good economic sense due to the high returns, and Mojo Estates is the perfect facilitator because of its wealth of experience.

Not only are Per and Jacob inspirational in the way that they conduct their business, making you feel part of the Mojo family with a welcoming atmosphere, but Jacob has also been christened “the hottest broker on the coast” and it’s not hard to see why! Putting the sunshine in the Costa del Sol, Per and Jacob have fostered the ideal business environment by putting clients first, and that applies whether your budget is a few hundred thousand or a few million. Everyone is offered the same level of outstanding service.

How do Mojo Estates stand out from the crowd? Well, as the weather heats up, so do the dreamy properties in the Mojo portfolio. Procuring breath-taking real estate mixed with next-level client care sets Mojo Estates apart. For Per and Jacob, Mojo is a way of life, not just a name. A bit of personal background on the boys will help potential property investors understand how Per and Jacob have reached the level of success that makes

Mojo one of the most sought-after real estate agencies in the Costa del Sol. Per has had to work hard for his money, he decided to leave home at the age of 7 to live with his grandparents and then he became independent at 16, giving him the determination that I can see sitting here with the gents today. As one of the youngest students in Denmark, Per completed an Executive MBA in business education, which allowed him to catapult several of his businesses to multi-million-pound stratospheric heights. Jacob has been a resident here for 16 years now, and Per for half of that time. They are firm family men, both of them have been married for 20-plus years and have three children each. It is not just their time in the property industry that has intertwined the lives of Per and Jacob, their families mix too, and their daughters have been best friends from an early age. It is Per and Jacob’s dedication to family that puts them in a prime position to assist in constructing your dream Mediterranean lifestyle, as they understand the importance of financial security. When it comes to investments Mojo’s reassurance is that optimum care is provided for their clients.

Mojo Estates Services Mojo’s five-pronged charge into the investment market includes Mojo Estates, Mojo Rentals, Mojo Invest, Mojo Capitals, and Mojo Sharing. Ensuring that all of their clients’ needs are looked after, the team at Mojo will provide in-house legal services, property management, accounting services, mortgage brokerage and even interior design. Whether you are creating a property portfolio or looking to buy a family home, Mojo will take care of everything related to the sale. Trust is important to the team, so they will only show you financially viable options and follow your specified remit. There will be no underhand tactics, giving you confidence that you are in the best hands as they treat you like extended family, all while keeping the champagne flowing.

A cocktail of: Business + Pleasure = Mojo As experienced businessmen who are keen to share their wisdom in the property investment industry, Per and Jacob are also eager to impress the importance of life is for living, therefore combining the two. Jacob has a natural media vibe surrounding him as his career began in music (I’ll just whisper the name Beyonce!), which makes their Instagram account a visual feast full of up-to-date content, so you will never get bored of scrolling. They have a refreshing approach to social media, making sure you engage with something different to the usual property accounts out there. @mojoestates will upload fun and informative videos and show off their photogenic portfolio in a way that keeps you following to see more property porn.

Mojo Capitals The concept of Mojo Capitals is that anyone can invest in property; over in America the Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) is a huge market, and thanks to Mojo’s innovative version of it, it has now arrived in Spain. The team will handle the purchase, renovations, possible rental, and sale of the property, which will return a handsome financial reward. Now is an advantageous time to invest in the Spanish housing market as the prices are lower compared to some European countries. Plus, as a bonus, a new law implemented in 2022 makes building and renovation faster. The minimum investment to become a coowner of the real estate development fund is €100,000. As a unique addition to the House of Mojo, you can expect the same personal and transparent service from Mojo Capitals as offered by other the multiple branches of the magic Mojo tree.

Making Money with Mojo Property investment with the team at Mojo is the secret to making money, as they are with you every step of the way, catering to different demands on varying budgets. Now… where did I put my piggybank…

The Future of Marbella Real Estate… Mojo is forever evolving and improving, although, with the services they already provide it is hard to improve on perfection. The team is always reaching and succeeding to offer everyone a hassle-free bite of the Costa cherry. Watch this space as Per, Jacob and the rest of the Mojo group continue to explore and climb new horizons in Marbella.

WOOD you believe it?

B

orn September 7, 1987 in Raleigh, North Carolina, Evan Rachel Wood was born into a theatrical family with her father a theatre actor, writer and director and her mother, an actress and an acting coach. Her two older brothers are also in the industry. Evan attended public school in North Carolina before being home-schooled, and she received her diploma at the age of 15. In 1996, Wood’s parents separated and later divorced, and Wood moved with her mother to Los Angeles, California. After a one-season role on the television drama, Profiler, Wood was cast in the supporting role of Jessie Sammler on the television show Once and Again. Wood’s first major screen role came in 1998 in the low-budget movie ‘Digging To China’ with Kevin Bacon and Mary Stuart Masterson. The film won the Children’s Jury Award at the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival. This

led to a nomination for Best Leading Young Actress at the Young Artist Awards. The same year she starred in ‘Practical Magic’ with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. In 2002, Wood had her first lead role in Blair Treu’s ‘Little Secrets’ playing aspiring 14-year-old concert violinist Emily Lindstrom where she was nominated for Best Leading Young Actress at the Young Artist Awards. 2003 saw Wood star in ‘Thirteen’ in which she played the role of Tracy Louise Freeland, one of two young teenagers who falls into a downward spiral of hard drugs, sex, lies, piercings and petty crime. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Tracy. In 2005 Wood starred alongside Edward Norton in David Jacobson’s Down ‘In The Valley’ as well as in the music video for punk rock band Green Day’s ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’. 2007 saw Wood star in ‘King of California’ in which Michael Douglas played a bipolar jazz musician who reunites with his

daughter. That same year, Evan became the highest-paid music video actress when she starred in the video for Marilyn Manson‘s Heart-Shaped Glasses in 2007. Wood and Manson began dating shortly after the video. The pair called it quits several times, finally breaking things off for good in August 2010. In 2009, Wood starred in Woody Allen’s ‘Whatever Works’, playing Larry David’s young wife. In the same year, she joined the cast of HBO’s ‘True Blood’ as SophieAnne Leclerq. She also shone in ‘The Ides of March’ and ‘Mildred Pierce’, in which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a miniseries or a movie. Wood married actor Jamie Bell in October 2012, and the couple welcomed their son in July 2013. The same year, Wood played Gabi in ‘Charlie Countryman’ alongside Shia LaBeouf and Rupert Grint followed by a role in the HBO series, Westworld. Sadly, Jamie and Evan parted ways in 2014 but remain committed to co-parenting their son. Later in 2019 Wood was cast as the

voice of Queen Iduna in ‘Frozen II’. In recent years Evan has made headlines surrounding Marilyn Manson’s lawsuit against her. Talking of the legal battles she shared, “I can’t speak about any of the specific allegations of the lawsuit. But I am not scared,” Wood said. “I am sad because this is how it works. This is what pretty much every survivor that tries to expose someone in a position of power goes through.” She added, “This is part of the retaliation that keeps survivors quiet. This is why people don’t want to come forward. This was expected. I’m very confident that I have the truth on my side, and that the truth will come out.” Earlier this year Evan told her story in Phoenix Rising, a two-part documentary by filmmaker Amy Berg following Wood’s recount of how she met Manson, the allegations she’s made against him, and how her experience led her to form the Phoenix Act, a nonprofit organization that aids survivors of domestic abuse. Since then, over a dozen other women have come forward with similar stories and four have filed lawsuits against Warner.

Inundated with TV shows and movie releases, sometimes it’s just too much for any one human to handle. Each month we will bring you three of the best movies and TV shows to keep you entertained right through the year.

THIRTEEN LIVES Starring: Ron Howard, Colin Farrell, Brian Grazer

BULLET TRAIN Starring: Joey King, Brad Pitt, Brian Tyree Henry, Antoine Fuqua Bullet Train follows five assassins who find themselves on a fast-moving train from Tokyo to Morioka with only a few stops in between. Brad Pitt stars as Ladybug, an luckless assassin determined to do his job peacefully after one too many gigs gone wrong. Fate, however, seems to have other plans, as Ladybug’s latest assignment puts him on a collision course with lethal rivals from around the globe; all connected yet conflicting.

Thirteen Lives chronicles the true story of how rescue workers worked to save 12 boys and their football coach from a flooded, impenetrable cave system in Thailand. The film follows Richard Stanton, John Volanthen and Richard Harris, three outside experts brought in because of their knowledge of cave diving. The trio, along with other international parties and the Thai military work together to help rescue the boys and bring them out alive.

LUCK Starring: Jane Fonda, Dana Goldberg, Whoopi Goldberg, David Ellison This is the story of Sam Greenfield, the unluckiest person in the world! When she stumbles upon a neverseen-before-world of good and bad luck. The Land of Luck is where all the lucky and unlucky moments of our lives are engineered. Magical creatures like Bob the Cat make sure that things run smoothly in the Land of Luck and luckily, there are no humans to mess up things. There Sam must unite with the magical creatures to turn her luck around and uncover a force more powerful than even luck itself.

Perfect for all the family

Are you afraid of the dark?

One to keep your concentration

e h t & LOCKE & KEY: SEASON 3 Starring: Darby Stanchfield, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Jackson Robert Scott, Asha Bromfield Based on a comic book series, Locke & Key season 3 is set to be action-packed focusing much more heavily on the family. They’re going to face the greatest threat they’ve had yet which will really bond them in a way that we’ve never seen before. With the end of Season 2 teasing the threat of Captain Frederick Gideon, we’re expecting him to be an even bigger adversary than Dodge. We’re also expecting family dynamics to shift and evolve quite a bit in the upcoming season, especially since Nina used the Memory Key to restore her lost memories in season 2. This will be the last season so expect a satisfying conclusion and a tidy ending.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: SEASON 3 Starring: Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Darren Barnet, Jaren Lewison

THE SANDMAN: SEASON 1 Starring: Joely Richardson, Jenna Coleman, Boyd Holbrook, Gwendoline Christie, Patton Oswalt

The hit comedy about a messy teen protagonist named Devi Vishwakumar is back for its third season. The final episode of Never Have I Ever season 2 culminated with the explosion of the love triangle between Devi, hot jock Paxton and nerd rival-turnedlover Ben. Although Devi tried to juggle both, it ultimately blew up in her face. But the stars finally aligned for Devi in the last episode when she walked into the winter dance with Paxton after the pair made their relationship official. But while Devi and Paxton made their proper debut as a real couple, Ben learned from Eleanor that Devi initially wanted to choose him, but her friends talked her out of it. Eleanor also shared that Devi never got over him and was so jealous of his romance with Aneesa that she went out of her way to try and prevent them from hooking up. No doubt Season 3 will pick up where the last left off and finalise this love triangle for good.

The Sandman tells the tale of Morpheus also known as Dream of the Endless, an impossibly old being who is also the living personification of dreams. He lives in a realm called The Dreaming, where he tends to the REM state of beings all over the universe; of course, this means he spends a lot of time near Earth, pursuing gods, motivating fools to become authors, and occasionally disturbing waking terrors. Series 1 is set in 1916 and starts with an exhausted Morpheus who is captured by an immortality-seeking magus. He eventually escapes in 1989 and sets out to put his broken kingdom back in order.

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne have put their LA home up for sale for $18million (£15.1million), as part of their plan to return to the UK. This has been fuelled by Ozzy’s open annoyance with the California tax laws. The Black Sabbath rocker and his music manager wife Sharon are in preparation to relocate to Buckinghamshire with the couple having resided in Beverly Hills for more than 25 years. Ozzy shared, “We are leaving LA. We are a bit sad. But the tax is getting too much. I am sad because I really really like staying and living there.”

Graham Norton recently celebrated his wedding at a private ceremony in his native west Cork, Ireland. The BBC chat show host welcomed more than 100 guests for a lavish reception at the 18th-century Bantry House estate. The identity of Graham’s husband remains a mystery with the BAFTA winner opting to keep his relationship out of the spotlight.

BACK TO BLACK Fifty Shades of Grey’s Sam Taylor-Johnson is to direct the Amy Winehouse biopic. The director will take on the project, Back to Black, and is expected to begin searching for an actress to take on the lead role within the coming weeks. Studiocanal is producing the film, while Matt Greenhalgh has written the script. The film is being made with full support from the Amy Winehouse estate, including her father, Mitch Winehouse. Back to Black will explore the life of Amy Winehouse and is expected to cover her journey as a promising singer from North London to becoming a global megastar with hits such as Rehab, Back to Black and Tears Dry.

The baby girl joins their first-born daughter Willa, who arrived in July 2020. “It’s what life is about for me — raising the next generation,” she said. “The greatest thing in life is seeing my daughter go from strength to strength. We’re so excited to be expanding the family. It’s the best blessing ever.”

SHOCK SURROGACY

WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT

Khloe Kardashian and basketball player, Tristen Thompson are expecting a baby boy via surrogate. This will be the couple’s second child as they are already parents to four-year-old, True. The baby boy is understood to have been conceived before Khloe discovered her now-ex had been unfaithful and fathered a child with another woman. However, with the support of her family, Khloe is looking forward to giving True a sibling and welcoming her baby boy.

Selling Sunset’s Heather Rae El Moussa and Tarek El Moussa are expecting their first child together. The couple were in the middle of IVF treatments and had even scheduled a date to transfer an embryo when they got a happy surprise. “It was a huge shock,” says Heather. “We just weren’t expecting this. We had just gone through IVF. We had embryos on ice. We had a plan. I think when you least expect it and there’s no stress in your life, the world just brought us what was meant to be. I’m so excited that it happened like this.”

RETURN OF

Years after declaring that she would be retiring from acting following a decades long career, Cameron Diaz is ready to make a comeback. The last time Cameron appeared on our screens was in 2014, when she premiered three movies, The Other Woman with Leslie Man, Sex Tape with Jason Segel, and a remake of Annie. Since then, she married Benji Madden in 2015 and they have lived a more peaceful, private life away from the spotlight, raising their daughter Raddix, who they welcomed in 2019. Now, nearly eight years later, Cameron has shared she’ll film a new movie for Netflix with Jamie Foxx, an action-comedy appropriately titled Back in Action. The project reunites Cameron and Jamie, who worked together on 1999’s sports drama Any Given Sunday and as well as in the very last film she worked on, the Annie remake.

Blogs have been big business for some time now. The word is a truncation of weblog, and it is a fun way of communicating and connecting, and the good thing is anyone can start one. You don’t have to be an expert, but it has to be interesting, have accompanying images, and be regularly updated. With so many topics to blog about, some are comical, some are super informative, and some are inspirational and motivational, so here are just a few blogging accounts that are a treat for your eyes…

>> in the frow

is a designer fashion blog, and another truncation (front + row). You will find Victoria, a London-based luxury fashion lover who started In the Frow in 2012, on Instagram and www.inthefrow.com. She has won numerous awards and attracted over a million followers who appreciate the aesthetic of her blog and her advice. The extremely stylish Victoria has a best-selling book and a PhD in fashion, coupled with the visuals of her blog you can see why her followers are inspired by her recommendations. She also does a fashion vlog (video + log/blog) on YouTube inthefrow Instagram @victoria

>> salt in our hair is a travel blog with couple Nick and Hannah. As stated on their blog, they have seen some of the world’s most beautiful places, and there is plenty of photo evidence. Not only will they give you travel envy, but they will also give you tips on sustainable travel and guides on destinations. One of the highlights is their 3-day guide to Marrakech, Morocco. Along with other African countries, they have also visited many countries in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Central and South America. Salt in our Hair also has a ‘plan your trip’ section. As well as going global they are also viral with Facebook, Instagram and YouTube accounts and www.saltinourhair.com

>> the ronnie dog blog is a microblog on Facebook. It is from Ronnie the rescue dog’s point of view. His opinions on all things human are hilarious. Ronnie was found collapsed on a Spanish street and then taken to a rescue centre before being rehomed in Norfolk, England. He likes to refer to his humans as ‘the large uprights’; Ronnie’s potty mouth makes this an 18+ blog, but his tales of family life with his dog companion, Ginge, will have you laughing your flip-flops off. Ronnie’s blog also advertises dogs who need rehoming and rescue centres that need donations. So, there are several reasons to follow @ The Ronnie Dog Blog.

Good Pod

There are several new ways to mainline information and podcasting is one of the most popular. The good news for the listener is there are plenty to choose from, whatever subject you are into there is a podcast about it. Podcasts are episodic in an audio or video format. The fact that they can be downloaded or streamed and listened to at any time makes them a convenient form of entertainment. At the gym, beach, driving, walking or relaxing, or even doing the housework, here are a few podcasts to subscribe to…

>> golfcity Crazy about golf? Golficity is one of the best golf podcasts out there, especially for variety. Regular golfers Frank and Mike host the weekly podcast, they have guests and share tips and tricks. One of the episodes is titled Bouncing Back from a Round of Bad Golf, so whatever your golfing handicap or whichever level you are, or if you are just passionate about a game of golf, you can listen on iTunes or Soundcloud.

>> hollywood crime scene If you like your crime mixed with glamour then Hollywood Crime Scene could be your… umm… scene. It takes you out of Marbella and into a world of comedy and intrigue. With over 400 episodes under their belt, hosts Rachel and Desi discuss scandalous true stories that befell Hollywood stars, albeit with a comedic take on crime in La La If you’re into guided meditation, visualisation Land. From Richard Ramirez, Dean and relaxation then Sleep Meditation Music is Martin, and Judy Garland to for you. Jason Stephenson’s voice will focus your America’s Next Top Model, thoughts while you drift away (hopefully not literally) the Disneyland Park (or sitting on the beach, watching the waves roll in; some of his should that be dark!?), episodes will take your mind there, saving money on sun cream. and the Chateau Marmont, There are episodes for different purposes too, affirmations for health, there are hours of entertainment wealth and happiness, but if you do have trouble sleeping, his mantra is here for people who like their peaceful sleep and an awakened mind. Available on YouTube. mysteries macabre. Available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

RISING STARS

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT In 2022 we are seeing a great deal of up-and-coming talent — people whose star is set to shine brightly into 2023 and beyond. There are shiny new faces in the music, sport, film, fashion and comedy industries, some have been out there a while, but have been flying under the radar. These are just a few of the gifted youngsters to watch out for; you might have already heard of some of them, if not, you soon will have.

Fashion Forward

Comedy Gold SOPHIE DUKER Oxford-educated comedian, Sophie, has appeared on Frankie Boyle’s New World Order, Live at the Apollo and Taskmaster among other British TV programmes, but doesn’t receive enough recognition for her stand-up sets, which have an on-point delivery. After all, that’s part of the comedy battle won. If you can’t make it to see Sophie’s live show, Hag, then you can catch up with her on YouTube. MARK NORMAND Okay, so he’s been around for a while, but he is funny. Mark is from New Orleans and has a laid-back delivery style. He has appeared on some of America’s top late-night talk shows, has some comedy specials, and tours America and internationally. Mark’s comedy features in season 3 of the Netflix series The Stand-Ups or you can check him out on YouTube, where his observations about ‘men’s work’ and ‘women’s work’ will have you laughing out loud.

Cinema Stars MICHEAL WARD Jamaican-British actor Micheal Ward has previously starred in an episode of the BBC anthology series Small Axe and seasons 3 and 4 of Top Boy on Netflix. He is currently filming Empire of Light starring Olivia Colman and directed and written by Oscar-winning Sam Mendes – a romance set in an old cinema in a British coastal town in the 1980s. Micheal won the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2020 and has been named in the famous Forbes 30 Under 30 list. PATTI HARRISON is making the leap from the small screen to the silver screen in the upcoming comedies The Lost City with Sandra Bullock, and Mack and Rita with Diane Keaton. Her film debut was in Together Together at the Sundance Film Festival. You might recognise Patti from her supporting roles in cult comedy shows Broad City and Aidy Bryant’s Shrill, where she played the mesmerising sharp-tongued Ruthie.

LOUISA BALLOU Building a brand in the fashion business is never easy, but Louisa Ballou is making waves in clothing design with a swimwear and resortwear brand. It’s luxurious, it’s vibrant, it has tropical prints and it will get you noticed at any beach bar. D’ACCORI shoes are works of art; worn by Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa, they will fit in with the Marbella aesthetic. There are platforms and mules in beautiful metallic colours, they also come in glittered or textured leather. They are something of a trophy shoe, and if you want to elevate your shoes to hero status, then crystals are an option.

PRIYA AHLUWALIA is another name to keep a close eye on. Taking inspiration from her Indian-Nigerian heritage, she has also collaborated with style icon Paul Smith and is the name on the fashion glitterati’s lips right now. All of these brands are available at NET-APORTER, MatchesFashion. com and Myteresa.com

Re-playing the Record

Entertainment Extra WET LEG is a cheeky British indie rock band. Founded by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers from the Isle of Wight, their debut single ‘Chaise Longue’ was a hit in 2021, and their eponymous debut album was released in April this year. Leeds five-piece EADES released their debut album ‘Delusion Spree’ this year. If you like the New York band The Strokes, then you’ll like Eades.

WUNDERHORSE (formally of Dead Pretties) Singer-songwriter Jacob Slater, who starred as drummer Paul Cook in the miniseries drama about the Sex Pistols, is now going solo as Wunderhorse, whose debut album Cub is out now. It includes the tracks ‘17’, ‘Poppy’, ‘Teal’ and ‘Butterflies’. Giving off Neil Young vibes the music has a dark and brooding guitar paired with poetic lyrics. BABY TATE (formally Yung Baby Tate) You would be hard-pressed to have a conversation about rising female hip-hop stars in 2022 without someone mentioning Baby Tate. Citing Nicki Minaj and CeCe Peniston as her influencers, this girl can hold a note as well as rap. The rapper from Atlanta, Georgia gained traction with the viral single ‘I am’ featuring Flo Milli.

At only 20 years old, CALEB MCLAUGHLIN has starred in 4 seasons of Stranger Things and is now transitioning into films. He is set to become part of the new Hollywood crew, starring in the critically acclaimed Concrete Cowboys and the forthcoming horror movie Demon House. DAISY EDGAR-JONES is the star of the BBC adaptation of Sally Rooney’s book Normal People; she is now starring in the film adaptation of another book Where the Crawdads Sing by Celia Owens, produced by Reece Witherspoon (or without her spoon, depending on how you prefer her). Daisy has yet another adaptation in the pipeline in the shape of the Mormon true crime book Under the Banner of Heaven. It’s not all adaptations; there is an upcoming thriller, Fresh.

Brothers on the Ball JUDE BELLINGHAM is currently playing midfield for Borussia Dortmund and England with Liverpool dropping hints for a big-money transfer, 19-year-old Jude has the world (and most likely the ball) at his feet. He became Birmingham City’s youngest ever player at 16 years old and is set to go to Qatar with England’s 2022 World Cup squad. With a transfer value of a cool £115m, it potentially ranks him the fifth-highest value in the world. Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé is the most valuable at £176m, in case you were wondering. JOBE BELLINGHAM As the younger Bellingham brother from Birmingham (try saying that after a few drinks!) Jobe has represented England in the U17 national team. The 16-year-old’s position is an attacking midfielder for the Championship club, Birmingham City, with Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle all reportedly keen to sign him.

By Ian Greenland

As I sit here in bed once again, my head throbbing, muscles aching and throat kind of dry and scratchy but also slimy and gross at the same time, I reflect on what an absolute godsend Covid 19 has been. Were it not for the virus’s assault on nearly half the world’s population, resulting in some 15,000,000 excess deaths as well as an unquantifiable impact to education, work, global economics, mental health and the availability of bog roll, I might have been sat instead on the sofa or at my desk, or even in a lovely sunny pub garden, not knowing what to write about this month. Thankfully though, all that stuff did happen and I’ve caught it for at least the second time so provided I can string enough sentences together coherently (“when have we ever required that of you?” - Ed.), I count myself extremely grateful Corona has gifted me creative inspiration... to go with the coughing, dizzy spells and social pariah status. “But aren’t you pissed off about the circumstances of the infection?” you ask. Oh what, you mean because I caught it from my fiancé and my fiancé caught it on the plane back from the weeklong holiday to Mallorca with 12 of our nearest and dearest we’d had planned for nearly three years that me and my son then couldn’t go on because broken Britain took nearly four months to send his passport back, only doing so four days too late once the passport office finally responded to the top-level

52

complaint we’d actioned several weeks earlier which they’d originally promised they’d respond to within 72 hours? The first holiday we were due to go on since long before this stupid... godsend of a pandemic?? The holiday in the £6000 luxury villa with full size pool and private chef to celebrate joint milestone birthdays with far-flung loved ones we haven’t seen since before this stupid f***ing... godsend of a pandemic?

full mortgage payments in lost earnings and on Friday I had to ring a friend of two decades 24 hours before shooting her wedding to break it to her I could no longer shoot her wedding?? The wedding she’d already been forced to postpone twice because of this goddamn, stupid f***ing a***hole of a GODSEND of a pandemic?!?!?!.... Not bothered mate. Hadn’t crossed my mind. In situations like these I just think, “Who moved my cheese?” (“You’re not going to start writing about cheese are you? You already did a cheese article. It was particularly stupid” - Ed.)

Do you mean because my fiancé blatantly caught it from the coughing woman and kid who ended up in what would have been our plane seats? Do you mean because after eight days solo juggling school runs and dog walks with a sick parent, a funeral and a very difficult client whilst trying not to cry or think about cocktails and palm trees my reward for holding all our shit together was the flu? Do you mean because I’m self employed and don’t get sick pay and this latest bout I picked up as a reward for not going on the holiday of a lifetime has cost me roughly two

Who Moved my Cheese? is a wildly popular motivational fable written by Spencer Johnson and published in 1998 which reflects on the ways we deal with major changes and hurdles in work and life. It tells the story of a maze (our environment) whose inhabitants must contend with the disappearance of their supply of cheese (success/ happiness) Whilst two of them adapt, having anticipated and accepted the finite nature of their first cheese supply and heading off in search of more, the remaining two - Hem and Haw - feel angry and slighted, their exhortations providing the story’s title. Haw suggests they search for new cheese but his friend remains intransigent in his indignation and victimhood,

refusing to move. Haw makes forays from their base, discovering morsels along the way which sustain him as he shifts his mindset towards one of optimism and accountability. He scrawls his realisations on a wall - “If You Do Not Change, You Can Become Extinct” and “What Would You Do If You Weren’t Afraid?” Upon writing this last, he sets out for good in search of a cheesy new home, leaving Hem to blame his hunger on anything and anyone else. When Haw eventually finds cheese in abundance and in flavours he never before knew existed, he understands the conundrum once and for all, imparting his wisdom once more to the wall... and the reader.

Reading and understanding Johnson’s seminal work (It’s not actually about cheese) has helped me compartmentalise my recent (first world) problems, recognising that crap stuff happens and you have to dance between the slings and arrows, moving forward with optimism and agency, not bitterness and blame. I’ve realised that to remain at peace I need to be prepared, and prepared to adapt. Life inevitably throws up difficulties but ultimately, I accept It’s me who’s responsible for own happiness and nobody else.... ….except the passport office. Those guys really screwed me.

Self-Care vs After-Care We live in a society that from a health perspective tends to be largely focused on treatment rather than prevention. This tends to be the same for our psychological wellbeing as well. Once we experience the trauma, we take steps to recover from it. Of course treatment is necessary, but what about prevention? What about taking steps to look after yourself so that the symptom never occurs, or if it does, we’re better prepared to deal with it and recover? This is where self-care comes in, and it’s something we should all be practicing.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SELF-CARE AND AFTER-CARE? We can think of self-care as preventative, or preparing to make us more emotionally and psychologically resilient, where aftercare is taking the steps once we’re already affected by the event. To draw a medical parallel, self-care would be exercising regularly, eating healthily, doing all the things we know are good for our health, and after-care would be the treatment of the symptoms after they’ve already occurred.

WHY DO WE NEGLECT SELF-CARE?

themidlifementors.com team@ themidlifementors.com

We tend to neglect self-care for a few reasons. We’re not taught how to do it (or that it’s OK), so it can be quite challenging to gain momentum and clarity and perhaps, we don’t even really appreciate the benefits of self care. There are a multitude of studies from the field of positive psychology that reveal people who expect better outcomes experience them, compared to people who experience worse outcomes, and that further more, there are things you can do to become more positively focused and empowered. Note, this doesn’t mean that you’re not still going to experience negative events, but rather that you’ll be better equipped to deal with them than without preparation.

56

E M O T I O N A L L Y, HOW DO THESE PRACTICES AFFECT U S D I F F E R E N T LY ? When we’re investing in our self-care it’s a forward looking practice and we’re likely to feel good about what we’re doing. When we practice after-care, it’s more than likely we’re already in distress, so emotionally, it can be more painful, as we aim to navigate our way from the trauma or activating event, to a more peaceful place. Again, research suggests that self-care actually makes us feel better about ourselves, more positive about the future, and more emotionally resilient. It also means that when we need to activate after-care, we have confidence that there’s a ready made tool kit we’ve been practicing.

IS AFTER-CARE EFFECTIVE? After-care can definitely be effective. Most therapies and treatments are aftercare. Think of psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, the Havening Technique etc - where these are all methodologies employed once the event or trauma has occurred, to help the person recover, and they are often very useful. Different approaches will work for different people, so when approaching therapy, go with a referral, good reviews and your intuition. Keep in mind that if you feel a particular approach is not working for you, then there are other avenues you can explore until you find one that suits you.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

HERE’S HOW TO START YOUR SELF-CARE… We have five dimensions of self-care and we want to make sure we’re working across all of them. The reason for this is that we are inter-connected beings, our physiology impacts our psychological health, and vice versa. So start small with what is comfortable for you in each dimension and remember this is not about perfection, but about finding what works for you.

1

PHYSICAL - ensure you’re eating well by eliminating excess sugar and processed food from your diet, and moving more towards a natural whole food diet, that is rich in fibre (as gut health has a huge impact on mood) and get some daily movement into your day.

2

EMOTIONAL - Emotional, psychological and spiritual are closely intertwined and you are looking for easy to implement daily practices. At its root, emotional wellbeing is about self acceptance and building emotional resilience so you can bounce back in life when you’re knocked. Allow yourself to experience emotions rather than pushing them away. Spend time understanding your limiting beliefs and practising affirmations to rewire the brain for greater success and happiness.

3

PSYCHOLOGICAL - we can think of this as building an empowered mindset and activities here can include things like appropriate boundary setting (when you say yes to someone else you are saying no to you), reducing stress in your life, growing your life experience and stimulating yourself mentally. This is about getting out in the world and embracing new experiences AND working on your sense of self.

4

SPIRITUAL - Spiritual - for some this could be religion, but is not exclusively so. It’s about recognising a connection to your higher self and/or a higher power. Spend time actively working on what your values are, what your purpose is, what legacy you want to leave from your time here. Practices here can be journalling (then embodying these things), along with reading inspirational literature, or investing in self-development.

5

PROFESSIONAL - ironically this is the one probably most of us invest in the most, sometimes without even being consciously aware that we’re doing it. On the surface level, it’s about how you’re managing your career, your work life, how you’re showing up professionally. At a deeper level though it’s about the balance between work and life. It’s worth spending time thinking about what you’d like your life to actually look like overall. When we work across all the dimensions we’re doing our best to future proof ourselves against life’s ups and downs and when they do occur, we’re better placed to deal with them.

F I N A L LY … Life is always going to deliver shocks, but the better prepared you are, the less those shocks will rock you, so do get into the habit of self-care. Nothing is more important than your mental, physical and emotional health - it truly is your wealth. So don’t wait for that time in the future - invest in yourself now.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS DIDN’T JUST CHANGE MY LIFE,

IT GAVE ME ONE

Louise is a 34-year-old Mum of four, who at her worst, went missing for days…Her family’s anger and disappointment spurred her into action to change. She says she still can’t believe the magic that happens in the rooms of AA… here is her story.

“I

am a 34-year-old Mum of four children. At the end of my drinking, I went missing for days and left my kids with their father, they were worried for my safety, which turned to anger and disappointment. I was 11 when I started to drink, both my parents drank and smoked cannabis daily. There was a lot of rage and criticism throughout my childhood, and as the eldest child I took the brunt of it. Sadly, this didn’t even change when I left home. In my younger years I didn’t always set out to get drunk, but as I got older the more out of control my drinking became. By my late teens it had become a problem. Friends would comment on the “drama” when I drank, but no one ever really addressed my drinking (to my face), except my husband, who saw it was an issue straight away. It wasn’t just the booze, I used other things to change the way I felt. Sometimes it was drugs. In my teens I occasionally smoked cannabis but didn’t really like it. I would take cocaine to try and manage my drinking, and by the end of my 20’s I was using prescription medication. In addition to the substances, I would use behaviours. I would go shopping to try to make myself feel better, then exercising, eating, not eating, cleaning; when I got one thing under control it would change to something else. All my relationships were unhealthy. I had no boundaries. I was sad and angry all the time. I didn’t feel fulfilled, and nothing changed how bad I felt; suicidal thoughts would often enter my head. My marriage was strained. My children were

acting up to get my attention. I wasn’t the best person I could be, and that made me feel even worse. Rather than try and change, I drank more. After my last drunk, when I really scared my whole family, I knew something had to change. My husband was in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and had had been sober for many years, so I went along. At the beginning I hated AA and everything about it. That was until I experienced it first-hand. I learned what it was and what it could do for someone like me. Now I am truly grateful for AA, the fellowship and everyone involved.

Alcoholics Anonymous and the 12 steps didn’t just change my life, it gave me one. My life has become more balanced. I run my own business. My husband and my kids are no longer disappointed or angered by my behaviour. AA isn’t a religious program; it is a spiritual one. My first ever AA meeting was in September 2010, my sobriety date is 15th October 2017. It has been almost five years since I had a drink, before my only periods of sobriety were when I was pregnant. Life is good now. Of course, I still have good days and bad days. But my worst days sober are better than my best days when I was drinking. I have tools to deal with life, and all the ups and downs that are thrown at me. I surround myself with likeminded people and attend AA meetings weekly.

“AA IS THE FAMILY I HAD ALWAYS WANTED WHEN I WAS GROWING UP, AND NEVER HAD.” If you are struggling with alcohol, just make the call, get to a meeting, and give yourself a chance. You’ll be amazed. It still blows me away, the magic that happens in the rooms of AA. It’s the family I had always wanted when I was growing up, and never had.” There are meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, with friendly people who will understand, held daily throughout the Costa del Sol. Meetings are free to attend, and anyone who thinks they may have a problem with alcohol is welcome.

Your Best Choice INDEPENDENT LUXURY REAL ESTATE BROKER MARBELLA | MONACO | MIAMI | HAMPTONS LONG ISLAND | BEVERLY HILLS

Let HCP find your one and only property

Anja Geselbracht is the managing director of HCP. She has extensive experience in the luxury real estate business worldwide. Anja lists the United States, France and Switzerland as some of the countries she has lived in, resulting in a significant network to key people and important cooperation partners.

74

We were able to ask Anja some questions about her line of business.

Why did you choose now to expand in Marbella? The real estate market in Marbella is currently more buoyant than ever before! Locations like La Zagaleta, El Madroñal, Sierra Blanca and the Golden Mile are among the most sought after addresses in Europe right now. Marbella’s lifestyle, climate and accessibility make it so very interesting for real estate buyers from all over the world.

Your company does not use a website for real estate listings. That is unusual... How does it work? We are already established in other countries through our contacts from wealth management, banks and leading legal firms. So the clients who intend to buy or sell a high-end property get our contact details from this network. At new operating locations, we use also a few selected magazines for introducing our brand. It’s not our philosophy and also not very exclusive to present multi-million dollar villas in showcases or in the internet. Our network allows us to act in a successful way without

the need for mass promotion. Experience tells us that our clients appreciate and favour this approach. There is another advantage for the clients; they don’t need to contact several real estate agents or check a lot of internet portals when using our assistance.

That sounds great, but there are hundreds of real estate brokers in Marbella. How will you achieve a market position? According to our experience, the potential clients find out very quickly when we are operating at a new location. There is a silent post behind. I will point out that one of my partners works in international hotel investment business, so he has close and strong contacts in Marbella as well.

You are seeking luxury real estate for your exclusive clientele. Could villa sellers contact you as well? Of course, sellers or their authorised representatives are also welcome, if the property correspond to our portfolio or a client request. We can verify that very quickly.

Very insightful! Thank you for your time Anja!

HCP is specialised in off-market and silent offers. Their clients and most of their properties are confidential. Therefore HCP does not use any website for real estate offers. The operating locations are: Marbella, Miami, Monaco, Beverly Hills, Hamptons Long Island and some other unique places. The extensive cooperation with property holders, developers, well known architects and real estate agents puts HCP in position to verify the whole market according the special requirement of the clients. The team including the partner firms provide real estate, legal and financial advisory on the highest level, with over 20 years experience in international real estate transactions and portfolio management. KEEP IT REAL

Sustainable living means a great deal to us, although we may not know it. After all, a large part of the benefits of sustainable living is not to have to think about it at all. At its most basic, it means peace of mind, healthy living and the comforting assurance that the environment we choose to live in will not be put at risk in any way by our choice. So how do we know what’s sustainable and what’s not? Well, one way is to have your home checked out by one of the world’s leading sustainability assessment groups, of which BREEAM is the world leader. Or to purchase a home that has already been assessed by BREEAM. BREEAM provides third party certification of the sustainability of buildings and infrastructure projects, and is, in fact, an acronym of a group of words that mean little to most of us, but a great deal to those of us who have the good fortune to live in a BREEAM certified home. And if you must know (but feel free to forget), the acronym derives from Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method.

T he benefits of sustainability To be more specific about it might be pedantic, so to put it in practical terms, a BREEAM certificate is a guarantee of good living in every sense of the word. Good, because it’s good for the environment on many different levels, good for your health and safety and good for your peace of mind. Good, because it cuts water usage and waste, running and maintenance costs and electricity use, vastly reducing carbon emissions. Good, because it tackles pollution in very concrete ways, ensuring that your natural surroundings stay open and natural, allowing you to hear the song birds throughout the day and see the stars throughout the night. Good, because it makes you feel good. In short, a BREEAM certificate gives you confidence in a sustainable way of life, now and tomorrow.

Vista Lago Residences - these sustainable villas are integrated into the environment

Buildings are BREEAM rated and certified on a scale of Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding, and up to the present date, more than 550,000 buildings have been BREEAM certified, with more than two million having been registered for certification in excess of 70 countries throughout the world. BREEAM is especially relevant now, in light of the new rules on sustainability from the European Union, which are stricter than ever before. Given that buildings and their construction together account for 36% of global energy use and 39% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions annually (a lot more than cars), according to the United Nations Environment Program, sustainability is an ethos to be proud of.

79

KEEP IT REAL

What about the costs?

Contrary to popular perception, sustainable buildings are not significantly more expensive to design and build than those that simply adhere to regulatory requirements. Reputable research show that sustainable options often add little or no capital cost to a development project, and where certain costs are incurred, they will most likely be paid back through lower running and maintenance costs. There is also growing evidence that BREEAM rated buildings, apart from increasing overall value, also provide increased rates of return for investors and increased rental rates.

BREEAM certified properties are attractive to investors

BREEAM was launched in 1990, and over the past 30 years it has become an internationally recognized and robust standard of sustainability excellence. It helps its clients during the planning, design and construction processes, using independent auditors to ensure that, both at the end of the design stage and on completion of construction, the standards of the scheme have been met. The result is that a BREEAM certified building will be fully sustainable, respectful of the environment and all natural resources, and make a property – already enhanced by having conformed to BREEAM standards – all the more attractive to investors. The scheme uses a worldwide network of experts in their respective fields and adapts its conditions to local and climatic conditions, raising awareness among owners and designers of the benefits of taking a sustainable approach and helping them to successfully adopt sustainable solutions in a cost-effective manner.

Peace of mind

In the final analysis, as we said at the start, it’s a question of peace of mind. Anybody who can afford a luxury home in the Marbella area will not be overly concerned with the relatively small increase in initial purchase price that adhesion to BREEAM regulations may – or may not – incur. They might not lose sleep over just how well their building stands up to the ravages of time, and few new potential owners will boast to their cocktail party guests about the finer technical details of a BREEAM certificate. But they will certainly wish to live in a house whose sustainability and respect for the environment is fully guaranteed, because that is the very reason they have chosen to live in such a privileged environment in the first place.

BRIGHT leads the way with sustainable homes The develoment company BRIGHT have led the way on the Costa del Sol with regards to sustainable luxury homes, first with their award-winning Villa Alcuzcuz (sold in February 2021) which is the first luxury villa in Marbella to be built under Passive House Regulations and standards. The villa uses a fraction of the energy of a normal standard build home with energy costs reduced by a massive 75%. Now, with regard to their new development Vista Lago Residences, also award-winning, a BREEAM certificate has been applied for, in full confidence that their final rating will validate the enormous effort and innovation gone into ensuring the maximum sustainability of the entire project. In fact, the 200 hectare Real de La Quinta development, which Vista Lago Residences is part of, was the first infrastructure planning project in Spain to obtain a BREEAM certificate. It is not for nothing that a core principal of BRIGHT, whose ethos is sustainability, is “building for today without endangering tomorrow.” Every home in Vista Lago, inside and out, is designed in such a way to maximise the health and wellbeing of its occupants. Owners can choose to have organic vegetable plots in their gardens, mini orchards and kitchen herb gardens. With charging points for electric cars, and pollution from light, noise and emissions dramatically reduced, a luxurious yet completely sustainable lifestyle can be fully realised. e could find thousands of literary quotes that speak about experiences and emotions which take place outside on our terraces. If we look back and recount how many beautiful moments our outdoor living spaces have afforded us, and the amount of time we spend in them, why do we not bestow more importance upon them? On the Costa del Sol, we are fortunate enough to be able to enjoy these spaces for the majority of the year. The recent epidemic highlighted the importance of our connection with nature and the outside world. Terraces are valuable areas for any property. Our year round climate allows the luxury of being able to relax and enjoy the great outdoors consistently. It enables us to have direct contact with the outside, helping lift our mood and relax. There are few things in life more pleasant than sharing a drink and a chat with friends al fresco, or simply chilling out in solitude with and a good book. Terraces are an extension of the home, and in many cases, more of our life takes place outdoors . For our team, it is very important to utilise this valuable space, designing it in sympathy with nature with the optimum choice of furniture, plants and fabrics to create a little haven. Blending functionality and aesthetics, outdoor spaces are converted into an oasis of relaxation and calm.

ALTERED STATES BRABUS, THE WORLD’S LARGEST MERCEDES TUNER TURNS THEIR HAND TO PORSCHE. MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE BRABUS PORSCHE TURBO S 820

102 102

TORQUE TALK

103

TORQUE TALK

While most car enthusiasts know that Brabus is the world’s largest and best Mercedes tuner, not many realise that Brabus is also, by a considerable margin the world’s largest tuner per se. With six state-of-the-art buildings sitting on 150,000 sq. m of wholly-owned land on an industrial estate in the town of Bottrop, north-west Germany, Brabus covers the tuning gamut of the latest and past Mercedes models along with the restoration, and buying and selling of Classic Mercedes. Brabus also operates a well-established research and development division that is frequently contracted by OE car makers for small volume specialist models that are too costly to produce inhouse. Their cutting-edge capabilities include CAD, FEM, 3D printing, and the design and production of specialist carbon-fibre components. Founded in 1977 as an exclusive tuner of MercedesBenz vehicles by legendary auto industry visionary and old-school gentleman, the late Bodo Buschmann, Brabus is now run by his son Constantin who is busy leveraging the company’s solid-gold brand equity into the tuning of other exclusive marques like Porsche and Rolls-Royce. Brabus’ debut Porsche tuning package is for the 992 Turbo S, a stupendously fast car out of the box. But there will always be a hard-core group for whom too much power is just enough, and Brabus’ headline number of 820hp is definitely enough to stir their blood. Before we explain in detail how the Brabus engineers raised the output of the Turbo S motor to 820hp from the stock 650hp we need to put the increasingly complex arena of aftermarket tuning in 2022 into context. When the first-generation Porsche 930 Turbo was introduced in 1976 it featured 260hp and 344.4Nm (254 ft lbs) of torque from a turbocharged version of the 200hp 2,993cc flat-six powering the contemporary Carrera 3.0. This early Turbo tipped the scales at a modest 1195kg (2,635 lbs).

104 104

WITHIN TWO YEARS PORSCHE HAD INCREASED THE ENGINE CAPACITY TO 3,299CC, MOVED THE ENGINE SLIGHTLY FURTHER FORWARDS TO IMPROVE THE WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION, AND ADDED BOTH AN INTERCOOLER AND A BRAKE SERVO. THE 300HP AND 343NM (304 FT LBS) WERE BIG NUMBERS THEN, EVEN THOUGH THE KERB WEIGHT OF THE 3.3 TURBO HAD GROWN TO 1,335KG (2,943 LBS). Fast forward to 2020 and the 992 generation Turbo S is physically larger and considerably heavier at 1,640kg (3,616 lb). But the 650hp and 800Nm (590 ft Ib) of torque dispensed through Porsche’s latest 4WD system does a sterling job of helping to bend the laws of physics. Just as its predecessors did the current Turbo S stands toe-to-toe with supercars costing twice as much and more. In the ‘80s and ‘90s before electronic management of the engine and gearbox became sophisticated and engine tolerances were also not as precise as they are today it was not difficult to see big gains in power through cylinder-head gas-flowing, high-lift camshaft profiles and a free-flow exhaust. Back then the regulation of emissions and noise were not a big thing. Over the years however, the onset of ever tightening emissions regulations has made the tuner’s job increasingly difficult. This is a multi-layered issue since OE manufacturers use increasingly sophisticated electronics to control a multitude of on-board systems. Thus the cost and complexity of extracting more power and torque while staying within the EU and US regulatory regime has become quite prohibitive, a fact reflected in the dwindling number of tuners able to offer engine upgrades that are fully compliant across the board.

With current vehicles, EU6 WLTP compliance encompasses meeting noise and emissions regulations with the mandatory particulates filter in the loop. Only a handful of tuners with the facilities, engineering skills and the financial ability to bankroll the necessary certification process then wait for sales to amortise these costs before turning a profit are able to meet this challenge. On that basis Brabus stands at the cutting edge of the tuning elite. “We did not come up with 820hp as a target output,” said Joern Gander, Chief Technical Officer of Brabus GmbH as he explained their Porsche tuning journey. “As a manufacturer certified by the Kraftfahrt Bundesamt (German Transport Authority) and offering a three-year or 100,000km warranty on our products, we began by investigating what is possible without compromising the reliability and longevity of the flat-six twin-turbo motor.” “We could have used a bespoke crankshaft, rods and pistons and uprated other internal parts and increased displacement from 3.8 to 4.0 litres as we do with our 4.5 litre Rocket 900 motor based on the Mercedes-AMG 4.0 litre bi-turbo, but then you are into very big money and very low volume,” he said. “As Brabus has no track

record in the Porsche tuning world it was abundantly clear that this was not how we should approach our very first offering.” Brabus offer two stages of tune for the Turbo S under their PowerXtra label. Stage 1 is the Brabus PowerXtra P38S-720 conversion that consists of a Plug & Play module placed between the engine and the factory ECU and connected by a bespoke wiring harness. This piggyback unit takes the incoming data from the factory ECU and remaps the fuelling, ignition and boost curves to optimise power and torque. The new big numbers are 720hp and 900Nm, an improvement of 70hp and 100Nm.

105

TORQUE TALK

As excess heat is the engine’s deadliest enemy Brabus leave the factory temperature sensor protocols in place. Should the motor reach that point then the PowerXtra module disengages and the factory ECU mapping implements safety protocols like cutting back ignition advance and boost pressure to reduce power and protect the engine. As higher output places greater thermal loads on an engine this is especially relevant to the Stage 2 PowerXtra P38S-820 conversion. “Porsche’s big intercoolers have sufficient headroom to support our 820hp Stage 2 conversion,” said Joern. “The major limitations to producing over 750hp was the factory turbochargers running out of airflow capability.” Having persuaded various generations of Mercedes V8 and V12 engines to produce up to 80% more than their factory rated outputs, the engineers at Brabus are long established masters of the art of turbocharger enhancement. Thus, adding 170hp to the 650hp 992 Turbo S, a mere 26% extra, did not appear to be much of a challenge at first glance. “Early on in our dyno tests we found that the key to the power and torque of this engine lies within the VTG turbochargers, so we focused our efforts there,” Joern explained. “We machined the compressor housing to take our larger compressor wheel with bespoke blade geometry. Then we did the same with the turbine wheel and its housing, both wheels benefiting from uprated bearings and shafts. The geometry of the VTG assembly whose blades change their angle of attack to alter airflow to the turbine wheel was also modified.” Since Mercedes does not use VTG technology, which incidentally was previously used on turbo-diesel engines, this was the first time Brabus has had to deal with such a turbocharger. With just about every component changed or upgraded, these turned out to be the most modified turbochargers in the 45-year history of Brabus! The factory camshafts that control the variable valve timing were retained, and after optimising the fuelling, ignition and boost mapping the engineers were pleased to see the dyno needle swing well past 800hp on 2.1 bar of boost with the exhaust particulate filter in place. Then came the fine tuning that would endorse both perfect driveability and full German TUV exhaust emission and noise certification, which both the 720hp and 820hp conversions passed with flying colours. The homologated output for the Brabus PowerXtra P38S-820 conversion is 820hp at 6,900rpm, with 950Nm (701 ft Ib) of torque at 4,000rpm, the latter electronically capped to protect the PDK gearbox and drivetrain. The fact that the engine output is distributed to all four wheels limits the potential extra load on each corner of the drivetrain to a modest 42.5hp and 37.5Nm, except of course when the system shunts more power to the rear under hard acceleration. “It was important to us that the car should drive exactly as the customer expects, in other words just like the factory Turbo S but even faster and more focused! “ Joern stated in a serious tone. So in a similarly serious vein we got into their Crayon Gray Cabriolet demo car and set out to see for ourselves. Brabus is known for V8 and V12 engines of up to 900hp, but as the Porsche Turbo S is up to half a ton lighter and far more dynamic than any Brabus Mercedes-based models with that level of power, 820hp is a really big deal. At a canter the Brabus Turbo S drives exactly like stock, its PDK gearbox instantly and seamlessly shifting ratios. Thankfully it is also bereft of any of the so-called ‘racecar’ kick-in-the-back histrionics and juvenile exhaust popping and banging that the marketing departments of some rivals think customers want or need.

Not only will they be totally pinned back into their seat, but the coin will likely sail right past them and end up somewhere in the rear compartment! All-wheel-drive traction and the engine weight over the rear wheels makes the 2.5 sec 0-100km/h (0-62mph) time a repeatable reality. It also puts the Brabus Turbo S neck-andneck against that stopwatch measure with the mighty 1,500hp Bugatti Chiron, whose price tag is multiples of the Brabus customised Cabriolet whose invoice value is already about 50% higher than the base car. The 340km/h (211mph) Vmax is electronically limited to respect the speed rating of the tyres.

THE MOST ELABORATE TAILPIPES EVER SEEN ON A BRABUS CAR, THE EXHAUST TIPS WITH THEIR HONEYCOMB STRUCTURE ARE A UNIQUE TALKING POINT

Part of the increase in sensory input comes from the deeper, more purposeful exhaust note generated by the bespoke Brabus sports exhaust system. Instead of the customary titanium frequently used to save weight and deliver a unique sound at the top end of the tuner tree, Brabus elected to adopt Inconel, as used by Formula 1 teams for their exhaust manifolds. Stainless steel with a high nickel content, Inconel is actually more common than titanium in motorsport thanks to its material properties giving it more heat resistance, but it can still be made thinwalled for lightness. Brabus crafted an all-new Inconel exhaust system including headers, silencers and connecting pipes, with a sound valve control hooked up to the factory system. In Normal mode for town driving this delivers a deeper voice than stock, but is not much louder in decibel terms. When fully open in Sport mode however, the system unleashes the kind of sonorous, throaty flat-six growl that Brabus and Porsche fans expect.

108

The first time you see them you try to figure out how such a geometrically complex design was cast or machined, but engineers will recognise that the only way to achieve this is with 3D printing, which Brabus carries out in Inconel. One of the things that distinguishes any Brabus car is its wheels, and the design philosophy of whether they should integrate with the car or stand out was a source of deep discussion at the start of the project. It was quickly decided that the latter was the way to go, and the resulting Brabus Monoblock Z one-piece forged alloy wheel is a simple and elegant 10-spoke design sized one inch larger in diameter than stock. Using silver and black accents to help tell their story of elegance, lightness and strength this is the first ever Brabus wheel to use a racestyle centre-lock system. These 9.0J x 21-inch and 12.0J x 22-inch wheels are wrapped in 255/30R21 and 335/25R22 rubber from either Continental or Pirelli, and fill out the wheel arches perfectly in conjunction with the Brabus height adjustable sports suspension, set 25mm lower than stock. The low unsprung weight conferred by the

ultra-light wheels and careful suspension calibration leaves the ride hardly firmer than on the standard car. The carbon-fibre aerodynamic styling kit is simple but functional. The factory front spoiler lip is part of the active aero system, and the larger Brabus carbonfibre version simply replaces that with full functionality. The same material is used for the new air intake frames and the side winglets. Other small components are the winglets in front of the rear wheel arches, and as with the other carbon-fibre exterior and interior components you have the choice of a matt or gloss finish.

The most visually expressive additions to the car are at the rear with the fully functional diffuser that surrounds the Inconel exhaust outlets that helps both heat extraction from the engine bay as well as lift and drag reduction. Of course the most prominent feature is the rear wing that adds more positive downforce.

But it is only when you look closer and assimilate clever details like how the red fabric under the perforated black leather on the seat faces gives the impression of depth, that you realise just how much thought and tangible effort has gone into this interior.

The finest quality interior trim is an art Brabus perfected decades ago, and this “Brabus Masterpiece” interior oozes sporty luxury, and features lots of nice details to discover when you spend time in the cabin.

Brabus approach every project aiming for a homogenous finished product, and one of their aims was to leave the character of the Turbo S largely unchanged. Thus, the improved straightline performance is balanced out by chassis dynamics that benefit from a crisper turn-in, reduced roll, and greater mechanical grip.

t’s long been thought the mechanical gear was invented around 300 BCE by Greek mechanics in Alexandria, Egypt. The deceptively simple application of evenly cut teeth to interlock rotating surfaces was... ahem... revolutionary in enabling the development of myriad machines and vehicles large and small, such as clocks, electric screwdrivers, washing machines and cars. Well, next time you climb aboard your pushbike and say a silent prayer of thanks to those ancient Greek mechanics who enabled you some two and a half millennia later to completely ignore red lights and nearly knock an old lady over as you zip onto the kerb outside El Corte Inglés, consider for a second that the animal kingdom likely dropped the patent on gears several epochs earlier. Ten years ago, two biologists from the University of Cambridge, Malcolm Burrows and Gregory Sutton unveiled research they’d been conducting on a 3mm long variety of “planthopper” insect from the Issus genus found across Europe and North Africa. The english garden variety they studied known as Issus coleoptratus were found to have

The english garden variety has an intricate system an intricate system of of functional gears which functional gears which locked their back legs locked their back legs together, allowing both together, allowing both to rotate simultaneously, to rotate simultaneously, propelling the tiny propelling the tiny creatures forward at creatures forward at speeds of up to 9 mph speeds of up to 9 mph (not bad for an organism (not bad for an organism roughly the size of roughly the size of Vladimir Putin’s soul) Vladimir Putin’s soul) Using high speed videos, the researchers demonstrated that both legs “fired” within 30 microseconds (30 millionths of a second) of each other. This level of coordination far surpasses what the nervous system could possibly achieve. 30 microseconds is barely enough time for a neuron to begin to fire, let alone trigger a correlative movement elsewhere in the body. Should the planthopper’s legs rotate at different times, its jumping trajectory would be affected, skewing it left or right like a badly hit golf ball. As such, these gears found at the top of the insect’s hind legs provide an elegant solution, another feat of evolution - the skeleton adapting to solve a complex problem the brain and nervous system cannot. The teeth of the gears even have filleted curves at the base, a feature similarly

incorporated into manmade gears to reduces wear over time. It’s almost enough to make you join the millions of our friend stateside who believe in intelligent design... before your brain kicks in some 30+ microseconds later.

These north American beasties burrow into the ground shortly after hatching from eggs and it’s there they remain for a whole 17 years before emerging enmasse to freak everyone the fuck out, mate and re-spawn. mid-July heat. First up were the house signature cocktails transported from bar to table in an array of creative vessels and tasting as delicious as they looked, we really should have only drunk one each, but we needed more for the pictures!

f you are a lover of fresh fish, crave your cocktails a little more on the creative side and prefer your dining experience to be served with the best views in Marbella, then your search is over. Throw in some fab decor and friendly, attentive service by knowledgeable staff and you have arrived at the iconic Marbella restaurant The Harbour. This perennial waterside favourite has been a staple of the local food scene for over 20 years and is a regular haunt for locals and tourists alike. Owner Penny Quinlan is a widely respected member of the Marbella community and is always first in line

when there is a worthy local cause in need of championing. On our lunchtime visit, the terrace was full and bustling, but the openair feeling of the chic interior offered a welcome refuge from the searing

Our photographer for this review was new to the coast and had yet to sample the legendary Andalusian dish gambas pil-pil. As I was in my 18th year here and had long since served my “pil-pil apprenticeship”, I opted for the rather more adventurous appetiser of seared king scallops served in their shells topped with apple cider beurre blanc sauce, with my lunch companion now

feeling more “Spanish” (and tipsy) we stayed loyal to the seafood theme and ordered whole baked seabream seasoned with chilli, salt, peppers, soy and lime, which duly arrived accompanied by a side of steamed mussels drizzled with a coconut and coriander broth along with a burrata salad and pine nut dressing topped with freshly ripped baby basil leaves, collectively creating an unrivalled

fusion of colour, fragrance and flavour - a real treat for the senses! With live entertainment also on offer, it is clear to see why this is such a popular spot, the entire restaurant was full now and nobody ever seemed to leave, by this time the terrace diners had become terrace dancers, and we were in danger of not getting out in any state to return to the office. We

will, however, definitely be returning to The Harbour... very soon. Whether you love fresh seafood or love a great time this is one harbour you will definitely need to moor at.

Is sustaіnabіlіty SUSTAINABLE? Bettina, our resident foodie, offers her insider knowledge on plant based cuisine and takes us on a culinary journey as she travels the world in search of gastronomic inspiration.

Sustainability is a word that is used a lot these days, and it’s important that we understand what it really means, and how by acting sustainably, we can affect many different facets of our everyday life. The United Nations describes sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. This is a broad yet perfect description of sustainability. My aim here is to provide you with some of the ways which we can apply into our own daily lives to make sure we are being as aware (and awake) as possible to make a positive impact.

Food & drink Going plant based or changing your diet isn’t necessarily the best way to eat sustainably. To me, it’s the source and the type of your food and drink that is incredibly important. We can be plant based and dairy free which can definitely contribute to improving the state of our planet, however if we choose to eat highly processed junk food, then we are just feeding the issue from another angle. On the other hand, if we change our habits to include eating the right type of products that are also sustainably sourced (and this can also include animal based products), then

it’s a win win. Going back to basics and eating the way our ancestors did is a massive tick in my books. I’m talking about real, whole foods that we prepare simply ourselves with no nasties added.

ANOTHER PLUS FOR ME IS EATING LOCAL PRODUCE - NOT ONLY DOES THIS SUPPORT YOUR SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES BUT IT IS THE FRESHEST FOOD AROUND MEANING MORE NUTRIENTS GET INTO YOUR BODY, EVERYTHING TASTES BETTER SO THERE’S NO NEED TO ADD TOO MANY MORE INGREDIENTS TO MAKE A DELICIOUS MEAL AND IT HASN’T HAD TO TRAVEL FOR MILES TO GET TO YOU, THEREFORE REDUCING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT. I’m so pleased to see that regenerative farming is becoming increasingly more popular which is great as the various methods used in this helps to restore the soil that has been depleted over time due to various reasons including mono cropping and farmers using harsh chemicals and pesticides. Regenerative simply means regenerating the nature from which we take from, over the years and because of the industrialisation of our food industry, we have mined the earth of all the goodness that it offers by taking, taking, taking and not giving back. Finally many farmers are making attempts to reverse and correct this.

Household It is also important to look at labels of what you are buying. For example, how many people actually look at what is actually in a vegan burger or meat substitute? It horrifies me to see not only what some companies are using as the main ingredients, but all the additional ingredients and additives and E numbers, many of which I don’t even understand. If you don’t know what these ingredients actually are, where they have come from, or if there are more than 5 ingredients, my gut tells me to steer clear. Incorporating a zero waste policy in your household cooking is another great way to be more sustainable. This means buying products with as little or no plastic packaging as possible, only cooking the amount you need, and using every part possible of the produce you are cooking with. I’m talking about using the greens and all of leeks and spring onions, using the whole broccoli stalk, roasting the cauliflower leaves, making the green carrot tops into a pesto, making potato peel into crisps, zesting lemons & oranges before peeling or juicing. These are just a few examples of not only using everything you can, but reducing waste and making things taste even more delicious! Some more quick changes you can make today regarding food are to shop in bulk ingredient stores where you take your own reusable containers, always carry your own reusable shopping bags, have a food bin or compost heap, buy from local farmers markets or sign up to a local fruit & veg delivery box, grow your own veg, and use reusable products like beeswax wraps, insulated drink bottle, metal straws and glass storage containers. Healthy and sustainable food options need to be readily available to all the population, not just those in more affluent areas. If this is not available to lower socio-economic demographics, this is in itself unsustainable, contributing to an increased risk of poverty, disease and crime in these areas. Food for thought…

Changing up the household cleaning products you use can have a big sustainable impact. By using products that are natural and don’t have harsh chemicals and toxins in them, you are not only preventing any health issues for yourself and your family associated with this down the track, but you also help to protect wildlife who suffer as a result of these products contaminating waterways. We can also aim to buy more energy efficient household appliances and increase window, door and roof insulation to reduce unnecessary consumption of energy. Solar panels whilst expensive, are worth investing in if you are in your long term home, as over the years this will pay for itself. Some governments also offer incentives for this so it’s worth doing some research on this!

Clothing I truly believe that we can also be doing a lot to address the unsustainable fashion industry, in terms of supporting clothing brands who make the effort to source their raw materials sustainably, who don’t use harsh chemicals in their manufacturing process, and who have very little wastage. We can also make an effort to buy less, shop in second hand clothes shops and even look to rent clothing if it’s for a one off event. Buying decent quality clothing as well as looking after our clothes better so that they last longer is crucial. Washing in cold water as well as line drying clothing all help too.

Travel It is becoming increasingly crucial to ensure we consider more sustainable travel options. This can include choosing how we travel to a destination, for example taking a train instead of a plane which reduces the carbon footprint, or choosing a destination where the local culture is being preserved and not exploited for the benefit of tourists. Hotels and accommodation are becoming a lot more conscious and by you supporting somewhere that takes many of the above points in this article into consideration is a step in the right direction. Each of these topics about sustainability are complicated in their own ways, and are pandora’s boxes that can be delved into should you choose to educate yourself more deeply, however simply being aware of the various options and small ways we can try to contribute to creating a better and more sustainable planet, is a great start.

‘Be the change you want to see,’ said Mahatma Gandhi. 115
