Celebrity Spotlight

Margot Robbie From the Gold Coast to Tinseltown 20

Celebrity Spotlight

The tradition of optimistic soap stars leaving for Hollywood with hope in their hearts and a spring in their step, only to return home 12 months later, disillusioned and broken, is popular tabloid fodder. The success that seemed guaranteed on leaving Coronation Street or EastEnders usually proves elusive when LA casting agents, producers and directors are added to the mix. So, are we agreed – actors from continuing dramas are guaranteed to fall flat on their faces when it comes to pursuing an international movie career? Just try telling that to Margot Robbie!

21

Celebrity Spotlight

B

orn in the modestly proportioned town of Dalby, Queensland in 1990 to a former farm owner father and a physiotherapist mother, acting might not have seemed the most likely choice of career, but by 2007 Margot Robbie was making a living by appearing in independent Australian film productions. The enthusiasm she had shown in drama classes at her alma mater, Somerset College, had paid off and subsequent parts in I.C.U. and Vigilante caught the eye of producers of Neighbours, one of Australia's most popular exports. From June 2008, Robbie was appearing regularly as the character, Donna Freedman. Despite only being envisaged as a temporary role she proved so popular that Robbie's tenure was extended until she decided to bow out in 2011. Opting out of one of the world's most popular soaps was, in itself, a brave move but this was just the first step for the actress who was still only 21 years old. On arriving in Hollywood, she was almost immediately sent to an audition for a TV reboot of the 1970s series, Charlie's Angels. Instead, she was given a part in a new series, Pan Am, in which she was cast as a newly trained air hostess, appearing alongside former child star Christina Ricci. This was warmly received by the critics, but patchy viewing figures led to it being cancelled after its debut series. However, this was more than enough for Robbie to have caught the eye of some very important people in the film industry. It is a truism that, in the 21st century, TV is the new cinema, as series like Better Call Saul and Orange Is the New Black are given as many plaudits and considered as significant as big screen offerings – often more so. Yet, for most ambitious actors, the movie industry is still where they most want to make their name and so it was with Margot Robbie. The chance of appearing in a Richard Curtis film, About Time, in 2013 gave her even more exposure and brought her to the attention of Martin Scorsese, who was about to start casting for The Wolf of Wall Street. The audition turned out to be

22

something of an eccentric process as Margot, who was being considered for the part of the title character, Jordan Belfort's formidable second wife, Naomi Lapaglia. Robbie was obviously desperate to land this plum part and raise her Hollywood profile to stratospheric levels - which is normally the result of appearing in a Scorsese movie - and was prepared to try anything to make an impression. In an interview that she later gave to Harper's Bazaar, she revealed that her desire to make an impression was so extreme that she slapped her co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio across the face. Hard. Far from being discomposed, DiCaprio reportedly burst out laughing and requested, “Hit me again!” Robbie revealed: “In my head I was like, ‘You have literally 30 seconds left in this room and if you don’t do something impressive nothing will ever come of it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance, just take it.’ And so I start screaming at him and he’s yelling back at me. And he’s really scary. I can barely keep up. "And he ends it saying, ‘You should be happy to have a husband like me. Now get over here and kiss me.’ So I walk up really close to his face and then I’m like, ‘Maybe I should kiss him. When else am I ever going to get a chance to kiss Leo DiCaprio, ever?’ "But another part of my brain clicks and I just go, Whack! I hit him in the face. And then I scream, ‘F*** you!’ And

that’s not in the script at all. The room just went dead silent and I froze.” So far, Robbie has proved an actress who chooses her roles carefully. Certainly, after making such an impression in The Wolf of Wall Street she can afford to be selective. In 2015 she was nominated for BAFTA's Rising Star Award, the same year in which she gained critical praise for her role in Z for Zachariah, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and impressed the critics. On a more personal note, it was a combination of good luck and good judgement when she accepted a part in Suite Française, because it was on set that she met her current partner, Tom Ackerley, a British assistant director. But Robbie is a woman who has big plans for the future. Her looks might have won her a part in 2016's controversial Suicide Squad but it was a mixture of brains and determination that caused her to set up her own production company, LuckyChap Entertainment in 2014. Her first project as a producer is said to be a biopic of Tonya Harding, the publicly disgraced American ice skater. She is also currently recording the voice of a dingo in Larrikins, Tim Minchin and Chris Miller's computer animated musical about a bilby's adventures in the Australian outback. Another recent announcement confirmed that Robbie was to star in Bad Monkeys, a screen adaptation of Matt Ruff's thriller, which LuckyChap Entertainment will also produce. Wearing two hats on one movie surely won't be easy, but those close to Margot Robbie claim that she will handle the roles with ease. After all, this is the woman who, as a newcomer, slapped Leonardo DiCaprio across the face. Watch out for Margot appearing with Brat Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kurt Russell in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Sony Pictures movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in which she will be seen in the role of Sharon Tate, Roman Polanski's pregnant wife who is murdered. Filming is expected to begin later this year.

THE NEW LGBTQ QUEEN Scarlett Johansson has dropped out of the starring role in Rub & Tug, where she was to play a transgender man. And although we were super thrilled about seeing her in this special role, Scar made the right decision here in light "of recent ethical questions". I mean, come on… Why did the film-team not consider hiring a true transgender actor/ actress for this role right away? Johansson cancelled the job to support LGBTQ activists and performers, many of whom have said that they felt disadvantaged and locked out of consideration. To Out Magazine, Johansson unveiled: "While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante's story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person." She continued, "I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film." Who we will get to see now in the role of Dante "Tex" Gill, a transgender man who managed a couple of Pittsburgh massage parlors in the 1970s and 80s, is not yet clarified.

However, we are proud of you Scarlet for making such a bold decision!

HAPPY ENDING FOR HALEY & JUSTIN We’re so excited about this: Finally, Justin Bieber announced his engagement to model Hailey Baldwin! On Instagram, he surprised us with a long love speech, talking about his true commitment and spirituality(?): "God's timing really is literally perfect, we got engaged on the seventh day of the seventh month, the number seven is the number of spiritual perfection, it’s true GOOGLE IT!"

LUCKY GEORGE!

After the media made a big fuss about Hailey’s ex Shawn Mendes (who, FYI, was never officially her boyfriend), being upset

over the situation, we now know: It was all just lies, lies, lies. Shawn said he had even texted Hailey when he found out about her and Bieber’s engagement. In an interview with the Australian Show, he told Dave Thornton "I texted Hailey the day of and I said congrats. That's what it is. Everybody wants there to be more -there’s not." Well said Shawn!

If you saw the online posted video of Clooney crashing into another car on his scooter earlier last month near Olbia, the capital city of Italian island Sardinia, you probably thought: OMG, is he still alive? Carabinieri Lt. Alberto Cicognani from the Italian police force told NBC News that Clooney’s injuries weren’t severe. The crash was initiated by a Mercedes driver who reportedly didn’t stop at a turn. But although he smashed the car’s windshield with his head, the answer is: Yes, Clooney is alive! The Oscar award winner had to be hospitalised for a couple hours but now he is back on track. Media caught him walking around the set of Catch-22, his new Hulu series, with a big smile, no worries and the motto: "It’s good to be alive today!"

WRECKING BALL HITS MALIBU COUPLE? We know, this is hard, but let’s talk about those rumours surrounding Miley Cyrus’ and Liam Hemsworth’s breakup. A reliable source, so it’s said, told OK! Australia that the couple just cancelled their wedding plans. The insider explained: "He wants kids and doesn't want to keep putting it off but it's not quite the timeline Miley had in mind... he has been left heartbroken". Apparently Miley doesn’t see building a family and marrying as the first priority in her life just yet: "I don't envision marriage. I'm 24. I hope I get to live a little bit more. I have too much living to do [before I get married]," she told The Sun last year.

Miley and Liam in their roles for "The Last Song" (2010)

However, another source confirmed to Elle that they are "still very much together and have just been trying to be more private about their relationship. They have been spending a lot of time laying low in Nashville lately and come home to Malibu often to spend time with family." But why did Miley delete all content from her Instagram page in July? So many questions, but one thing is sure: Miley and Liam are still in love and still together! Panic over!

“This is not the doom-and-gloom false narrative portrayed in the media. She was a brilliant loving soul who made amazing personal triumphs and these images capture that.” — Blake Wood

T

By Anna Gerlach With many thanks to Dominic Ruffy, Special Projects Director of the Amy Winehouse Foundation

his month American photographer and director Blake Wood is publishing his intimate photographic collection entitled Amy Winehouse, paying tribute to the true nature of the mega star. The 180-pages book consists of 150 black-and-white, as well as 85 colour photographs, showcasing the real Amy, including images of her private life during the times when she performed in Paris, in her home studio in Camden Town, London as well as when she holidayed in St. Lucia. Blake and Amy met through a friend at the peak of her career following his move to London in 2007 after a breakup. She had just won five Grammy Awards, but was struggling with all the media attention surrounding her, as well as her emotionally draining relationship. Blake and Amy became very close friends, often described as being each other’s shoulder to cry on; someone to talk to about all their misery. Every fan of Amy’s will surely remember when on 23 July 2011 the internet filled with headlines of the 27-yearold soul diva’s tragic death. Without a pulse, nor any sign of life, the police found her dead as a result of alcohol poisoning. However, if you watched the documentary about the British idol on Netflix, you will know that it was not only alcohol that was her enemy. In 2013, her brother Alex unveiled to the media that it was the drugs, the drinking and especially her struggles with eating disorders that took away her happiness and, in the end, her life. Right after her death, her GP, Dr. Christina Romete, explained that just a few hours before she died, Amy specifically stated that she did not want to die. However it was said that her doctor made it clear to her several times that if she continued drinking, her life would be in severe danger.

26

The only time when Amy stopped her drug and alcohol abuse was when she escaped the showbiz lifestyle and travelled to St. Lucia. In Blake’s visual diary, Amy appears happy during her time there. However happiness only lasted for three weeks. After that, she started drinking again, explaining that she was simply "bored". The "real" Amy Winehouse, as pictured by Blake, had frizzy hair and a naturally beautiful face, which didn’t need to be hidden beneath heavy make-up. She was someone who laughed a lot, but also showed her vulnerability — which was something that the public rarely got to see. And last, but not least, Amy was not the drug-addict alcoholic who suffered. She was a lot more than that: She used to be a happy daughter, sister and friend who could be at ease with herself and in love with her life.

The sad truth about what eventually killed her is reflected by the fact that Amy was haunted by her mental illness. From a psychological perspective, her addictive behaviour and the eating disorder developed because of a deeper underlying problem. The same problem that millions of other young people out there face every day, raised as a generation that seems lost and overwhelmed by the pressure of society and their families. In our exclusive talk with the Special

it was the drugs, the drinking and, especially, her eating disorder that took away her happiness and, in the end, her life.

Moreover, the Amy Winehouse Foundation established an all-female recovery house called "Amy’s Place," which helps women from age 18 to 30. He notes "having completed

Housing 16 young women, Amy’s Place is full and our residents are successfully rebuilding their lives." What makes this charity so special is not merely its background and mission, but their approach on how to successfully give young people a new chance: "Underpinning everything we do is ‘co-production’ - working with our beneficiaries to understand their needs and then in unison developing effective programmes that match the outcomes they are seeking. experience of the challenges faced is why the Amy Winehouse Foundation is able to reach and help so many young people." Empathy is what Amy was craving. In her song "Rehab", she said that she would never have any need, nor the desire for any more alcohol, if she just had a friend. The Amy Winehouse Foundation, first and foremost, means hope and personal growth. But it also stands for building truthful friendships, besides constructing a new basis and life structure, which makes it a charity that should be supported in any way possible. Ruffy explained to us the multiple ways

Like every charity, all our work requires continuous fundraising and awareness-raising, to enable us to continue helping so many young people. Any contributions towards our work are always welcome and much needed. We have a very active social media - simply following us and sharing our work with a broader audience is a fantastic way to help!" In the end, Amy Winehouse was an idol in many ways. Even now, 7 years after her death, she still inspires the younger generations with her songs, which will stay with us for all eternity. August's finest selection of movies, series & books is here and one thing is for sure: This month’s picks are hotter than a summer's day at the beach. So go get your records on and check out our favourite selection of Must Read & Must Watch…

Mu Wat st ch Mamma Mia! - Here We Go Again

After the first "Mamma Mia!" impressed us in 2008 with its true dancing queen ABBA vibes, we are now more than excited to announce the release of the second part. So what does "Mamma Mia! - Here We Go Again" hold in store for us? It better be a whole lot of funky dance moves and singing sessions, ’cause honey, honey, we’ve been waiting for this one for almost 10 years! I can tell you this much: We have an all new cast including Cher, Lily James, Jeremy Irvine and many more. Plotwise, we’d suggest you let yourselves be surprised this time… So call the girls now and start practicing your karaoke skills!

The Simple Wild

Smooth fog and a deep, dark forest: "The Simple Wild" by K.A. Tucker already has us hooked with its mysterious cover. This beautifully emotional and romantic tale takes you straight to the Alaskan wilderness — which doesn’t seem like such a bad idea after all this crazy heat we’ve had, right? Anyways, the girl with the lovely hat with her back to us is 26-year-old Calla Fletcher, who embarks on an epic journey to finally visit her sick father after many years of silence between them. On her way though, she makes an unexpected acquaintance with pilot Jonah, who doesn’t believe she will ever make it through the endless wild Alaskan landscape.

Like A Mother

Are you a mommy-to-be or have a friend who is? Then you will probably know and understand how exhausting those 9 months can get. Angela Garbes answers all your questions with a humorous and awesome appreciation of how the female body actually works. "Like a Mother" navigates you through all the big changes you have to face during pregnancy. Through the perspective of a true feminist and curious journalist, you will get to explore the depth of evolving science on health mysteries and cultural attitudes surrounding motherhood. “You don’t have to be a mother or even a woman to be fascinated by the science and physiology that Garbes writes about.” - NPR's Fresh Air

The Innocents - Netflix Original

Jursassic World - Fallen Kingdom

Back in 2015, Jurassic World - The Park is Open gave us the full dose of goose bumps and incredible wowmoments. Now eventually, the fifth film of the Jurassic Park series — and sequel to Jurassic World — is out, showing us again how powerful 3D technology in the 21st century really is. With J. A. Bayona in the director’s role and a production team of Frank Marshall, Patrick Crowley and Belén Atienza, this one has promised to be a real standout movie - and wow! If you thought the first part was absolutely incredible, you are certainly gonna love the second one. The trailer showed enough scary scenes to raise a lot of excitement. The movie, itself, though absolutely blew our minds!

We totally get it: The weather outside is way too beautiful to stay inside and bingewatch on Netflix. However, this 8-part series has to be squished in somewhere between your precious pooltime and beach club rendevous: The Innocents is another Netflix Original, which already suggests that we are dealing with a compelling plot and outstanding cast. Harry and June are two runaway teens in love who got tired of living under the same roof as their suppressive families. The dream team’s journey takes them to the edge of their emotional capacities, but also shows them how self-discovery really feels. While they get to unveil secrets that had long been hidden from them by their parents, the two lovers discover supernatural forces, which are going to tear them apart forever…

Here Is The Thing About

Codependency & Finding your True Love

I

Sounds like someone that every welldressed, good-looking guy with a great personality would love to marry straight away — right? Well here I am, living with the most beautiful person I’ve ever met: my soulmate, the person who embraces me and brings out the best in me, the ying to my yang. However, without finding out that I actually was codependent, I would never have got to where I am today.

guess I should introduce myself before getting started on this very common, but rarely discussed topic: I am Anna, a codependent love addict. Welcome to my life! But hey, so far, so good. Let me spare you the google searching and explain the meaning of codependency right here, right now. Codependency is a mental disorder that refers to unhealthy relationships where one dysfunctional person supports the other person’s bad mental health, whether it be a drug or gambling addiction, alcoholism, immaturity, irresponsibility, etc… the list is endless.

My previous journey took me from a crazy drug-addict to the most egotistical narcissist and it didn’t matter how dangerous the situations these relationships got me into, nor how badly I was treated by a person who said he loved me and then drank another bottle of cheap whisky; I always stayed. My partner used to be my drug of choice. A person I thought I wasn’t able to live without. Loneliness was never an option.

Well, doesn’t that sound delightful? If you are already familiar with the term, you are probably expecting to read some creepy stories now, followed by my essential guide on how to fix your problems and find your soulmate. Not quite, don’t worry…

Today I know that I was never actually lonely; only in my head was I the sad, abandoned little girl. So how did I get to where I am today? How did I make the change?

First of all, let me tell you. Nobody can cure you, except for yourself. My entire life, I was in denial about this and just recently I came to realize that it wasn’t always my ex-partners’ fault whenever a relationship burnt to the ground… Basically, if I had a Tinder account, it would probably say the following: "Anna, 24, looking for a true James Dean rebel. I am a full-on perfectionist, craving for endless affection and acceptance. I can’t get over chronic feelings of boredom and emptiness. I hate being alone hence I continuously make frantic efforts to avoid being alone. My personality, in general, is very intense and all my relationships so far have been unstable to an excessive unhealthy degree. Moreover, I do not know any boundaries, but I am good at dysfunctional communication and my reactivity is very high. Let’s meet for a coffee! xx"

I hate being alone hence I continuously make frantic efforts to avoid being alone. And how on earth was I able to find the one? The first and probably most essential part of my recovery was acceptance; realizing that I have to always be aware of those character defects. I didn’t only have to accept that I was going for the wrong kind of guys - I had to admit to myself that I was part of their craziness by allowing them to be selfish, by allowing their madness and accepting their drinking or gambling problems.

c

Nobody was able to help my American ex-boyfriend who loved drugs more than he loved anything or anyone else. But why the hell did I love him, if he couldn’t even love and especially not even take care of himself? Because I loved the feeling of misery. And whenever I was reading about what a soulmate actually is, I never believed the fairytale would happen to me. Someone who supports the positive in you? "How boring," I thought. I met my soulmate when he and I were both truly happy with our lives. We were happy without anything or anyone else. When we met we brought extra happiness to each other’s lives, rather than feelings of - I am so lonely. My life is not fulfilled. I really need a boyfriend/girlfriend. The truth is: Your life can be 100% fulfilled and awesome without anything or anyone. When you truly love yourself, you don’t need anything else. Even if you can’t listen to all the "love yourself"- rubbish and speeches on it anymore: This is all it takes for you to find your true love. If you are not there yet, go and find yourself! It doesn’t matter how old you are, what religion or ethnic background you have. If you are not happy, although you believe you know yourself, and you think that you need a boyfriend: Go on that self-finding trip again! Believe me: It’s worth it.

Newest Stateof-the-Art Dental technology at Ocean Clinic ! We are happy to announce the incorporation of Dr. Nina King as our resident dentist from this month onwards. Dr. King is one of the few dentists in Spain offering advanced aesthetic dentistry using digital smile technology (DSD). With this new DSD technology your teeth are scanned 3- dimensionally in your mouth, and possible aesthetic modifications like veneers and crowns etc. can be simulated digitally to simulate your new smile. In addition, with CEREC technology manual impressions and try on models from the lab are not necessary any more making the whole process much more precise. When using CEREC you don’t have to wait for the dental lab to finish your teeth, as your new teeth can be milled directly in front of your eyes using the new Digital CEREC Milling System. To learn more about these exciting new techniques and how they can help to make your smile more beautiful, please make an appointment with Dr. Nina King for your personalized smile consultation at Ocean Clinic’s Dental department.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Confidence = STrength MY CIRUMED EXPERIENCE AS TOLD BY TRACY KISS

L

ying back on the bed I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and felt a wide smile spread across my face. In an instant everything around me disappeared, my thoughts evaporated, the sound of talking silenced and the next time I’d wake up I knew I was going to be a new woman; an incredibly empowering notion I’m sure you’ll agree. I’d disliked my nose for years, hated it in fact, as my Hungarian heritage gave me a masculine bump on the bridge of my nose which stuck out, looked awful in pictures and felt far too big and bulky for my face. Being a model, TV personality, professional bodybuilder and journalist I’ve spent the past decade of my life in the spotlight and regardless of if only I notice it, or everyone else in the world, when you have something that knocks your confidence you feel it in everything that you do.

I WAS ABLE TO TRAVEL TO SPAIN FROM LONDON TO HAVE MY RHINOPLASTY SURGERY AT CIRUMED WITH WORLD RENOWNED PLASTIC SURGEON DR ASLANI; AND MY 5* LUXURY ACCOMMODATION, TRANSFERS, SPECIALIST VEGAN FOOD, AFTERCARE AND APPOINTMENTS WERE ALL CONVENIENTLY ARRANGED AND CARRIED OUT FOR ME.

66

Thankfully I found the courage to do something about it. After years of daydreaming about my perfect nose, hours and hours spent researching every fact, file and horror story possible I decided that at the age of thirty life is too short to live any other way than what truly makes you happy. Via the cosmetic concierge Serene Cosmetic I was able to travel to Spain from London to have my rhinoplasty surgery at Cirumed with world renowned plastic surgeon Dr Aslani; and my 5* luxury accommodation, transfers, specialist vegan food, aftercare and appointments were all conveniently arranged and carried out for me so that all I had to do was arrive, have surgery and recover in the beautiful Marbella countryside afterwards. Having had multiple private surgeries in and around London I have high expectations of professional service and medical results that I’m used to and based my decision to come to Spain for surgery on Dr Aslani’s high skillset and previous patient results. I knew that the flawless work he’d carried out on other UK celebrities and patients was exactly what I wanted to achieve with my own results, and so it gave me reassurance that I’d know and love exactly what he’d be able

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

to do to my nose. But I never imagined my surgeon and his team would go above and beyond my very high expectations; the quality of medical information, service and aftercare has been exceptional throughout and is something that the UK can learn from.

I NEVER IMAGINED MY SURGEON AND HIS TEAM WOULD GO ABOVE AND BEYOND MY VERY HIGH EXPECTATIONS

I heard my name being called softly by the nurse as I came out of surgery and that’s the moment I realised my life had changed forever – it’s finally done, my old nose is gone and I’m free from self-consciousness. Bandaged safely and tucked up in my hospital bed I couldn’t wait to see my face and speak to my family and friends. It’s the most liberating feeling to finally achieve something you’ve contemplated for so long; whether that’s losing weight, studying for a new career, changing your hair colour or even having surgery. Taking positive steps forwards to make yourself happier and more content in life is simply euphoric and has such an uplifting impact on your positivity and wellbeing. My recovery has been equally as astounding. With only mild bruising and swelling I was able to leave the hospital the following day with my nose in a cast, upbeat and energetic. I’ve been enjoying romantic lunches in the village with my boyfriend, trips to the beach, shopping and sightseeing since.

At my consultation Dr Aslani assured me that rhinoplasty surgery is the quickest and easiest surgery to recover from and his words stuck with me, he was right. Within a handful of days my life returned to normal and a week on from surgery it’s entirely undetectable me, but the huge smile as there are no scars at all due to on my face every time the surgery taking place through my I see a mirror has given nostrils. FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

The boomerang effect It is with unabashed rejoicing that we welcome back into the fold Lauren Henry. She seems to have been suffering from what I like to call the boomerang effect. Symptoms of which (Lottie will also testify to this) are trying something new and then coming back home. I have never been one to stop others from exploring the different possibilities that life has to offer. I like to say that if you leave properly, the door will always be left open for you. However, in Lottie’s case it might be revolving. Lauren came back to work after a two-year absence. She walked in on a Tuesday morning and by the afternoon it was like she had never left. At one point I even asked her if I had dreamt it all. Life is weird at times. Lauren is a very strong hairdresser. She is an extremely talented young lady, to whom hairdressing comes naturally. She has flare, which is something that cannot be taught. It’s as much a

part of your DNA as your skin colour. I do believe that in the time she has been away from us, she has grown as a person. She has enjoyed many different professional experiences which has taught her so much about the industry. It’s served her well, and in my humble opinion strengthened what she already had. To be so accomplished at such a young age promises real brilliance as she continues in her career. One of the many things I admire about Lauren is that she is never shy when it comes to asking for advice in the salon. She is confident in her skill, but is self-aware enough to know that it doesn’t ever hurt to get a second opinion. I think

Help is at hand Olaplex is what dreams are made of. As we move into the hottest part of the summer and the endless rounds of blowdries, sun, sea and chlorine, your hair is going to get more hammered than a blind cobbler’s thumb. Not only from the elements, which we know will play havoc with your locks but also from the increased washing and styling. So, if you want any hair left on your head for autumn then please get on the bond strengthening wagon and make Olaplex your new best friend.

we all know that the key to being a good hairdresser is being able to leave your ego Before outside the salon door, and this is something that she does naturally.

After

Some o Laure f n's latest work

Remember stage one goes in with the colour every time. No excuses, just don’t feed the kids. Step two is applied after the colour is rinsed off and before the hair is shampooed. Minimum 10 minutes or longer if I am running late. You can never have too much of a good thing, well, unless its Bacardi, but that’s for another column. If you are a blondie, then summer is also the time to pop on a toner. Just 5 minutes before your blow dry is all it takes to neutralise any unwanted tones thrown in by the sun. Please do remember that a true toner has no ammonia and requires a low volume of peroxide to penetrate the hair. Basically, if it smells strong it ain’t a toner and someone is telling porkies. If you follow these rules during the rest of the summer you should retain your hair elegance. Basically, just do as you’re told!

Dream

COME TRUE by Anna Gerlach

H

ave you ever dreamt of a beauty temple that triggers all your senses with the fresh, sweet scent and taste of Marrakesh’s essence. Combine this with ecological treatments and a lovely international female-only team that gives everything to allow you to fully enjoy this getaway experience. Well, then this dream can now become a reality! I spent one day at Hammam El Pacha in beautiful San Pedro, Marbella. When I left I felt, well, how can I say this right: completely reborn! It’s certainly an oasis of serenity that I got to explore. The majestic entrance was like a door to another world. I walked in and found myself in a bright temple, where everything was quiet and only a very relaxing music underwired the ambiance. With a very warm and happy "Welcome to Hammam El Pacha!", Lili took me to the dressing room where I received the key to my locker, which was decorated with a lovely Arabian key chain, as well as a nicely packed bag with everything I needed: glittering comfy sandals, a little sarong for during the hammam massage and a fresh towel. The package I booked was a mix of different hammam massage treatments that El Pacha offers.

72

However, besides the packages, which feature the traditional hammam and a ghassoul mud face mask, the imperial hammam that includes argan oil and sugar body scrub, the hammam royal with ghassoul mud body wrap and last but not least, the hammam el Pacha which is the only one that includes a one-hour massage with essential oils right after the treatment. El Pacha offers all other kinds of massages, such as back decontracting, maderotherapy or the four hands relax massage. The special thing about the products that are used throughout every single step is their Moroccan biological origin. For facials, El Pacha works only with renowned brand Recherche Biologique, which is said to be the best French natural cosmetic brand. And even waxing is done with Moroccan natural wax. You can even combine your massage day with a nice pedicure and/or manicure, letting your nails shine in one of 18 semi-permanent colours by OPI Professional. What is absolutely special at El Pacha is the "Bars" session they offer; a head massage that is completely new in Spain and releases electrically stored emotions and thoughts from the brain

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

and therefore creates room for more emotional peace, ease and joy. Biofeedback experts have reportedly measured changes in brain waves after the first session. I tried "The Bars" with specialist Ludinive. Right after the treatment I was able to see amazing results and it still feels like a lot of negative emotions have been taken away. What an amazing experience! The first step of my exclusive treatment was a full body exfoliation with bio eucalyptus aor and orange flower black soap, which I had to soak into my skin for 5 minutes before spending time in a dark 60 degrees Celsius steam sauna. With lovely natural sounds and lights that looked like stars on the ceiling, I fell into a coma of relaxation even before the actual hammam. What followed was the actual hammam, after which my skin felt unbelievably soft. I did have a hammam massage before, in Turkey, and I remember this much: It hurt, it was stressful and my entire body was itchy afterwards. None of this was the case at El Pacha! Right after the treatment, the lovely and very respectful masseuse - who threw goodbye kisses at me when the treatment was over - rubbed a mix of argan oil and sugar body scrub all over me. My skin felt released and absolutely restored. Moreover I got to enjoy a ghassoul mud face mask and body wrap which both felt wonderfully refreshing. At the end I enjoyed cool water in the jacuzzi so I could still relax, but also come back to my senses.

I finished the day with some very delicious pastries and a mix of peppermint and green tea from Marrakesh in the rest area, which featured an interior design and atmosphere, resembling my most beautiful Moroccan dream come true! FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Let’s talk fat, all kinds of fat – and yes, there are different types. We talk a lot about belly fat, so it is easy to understand why many people think of fat in terms of where it is on your body, rather than the type. There are four basic types of body fat, two of which are bad or very bad – toxic and dangerous. And of course, we don’t tend to enjoy the way these look on our bodies!

Master the basic fat types Brown fat is good fat, used to

convert the food we eat to heat. It acts like a muscle when triggered by the cold, burning calories for fuel (the only plus to being cold!).

Beige fat is good fat: research shows that when we exercise, this fat changes from white to beige in colour meaning it has huge potential for weight management. White subcutaneous fat is

bad fat, dubbed "the inch you can pinch", subcutaneous fat lies directly under the skin. It’s the opposite of number one here, the energy burning brown fat. This fat burns slowly and is often found in hard to shift areas such as the thighs, backs of hips, arms & belly.

White visceral fat is very bad, its toxic fat aka the silent killer that lives inside most of us, not just the obviously overweight. We can be skinny fat too! We’re all at risk. Toxins and fatty acids from visceral fat are swept up by the blood and dumped into the liver, increasing cholesterol, the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and chronic inflammation. Over time this can lead to other avoidable diseases, including cancers.

Factors that contribute to dangerous fat First, the obvious: unhealthy lifestyle choices that include bad dietary habits, from poor food choices to overeating; excess alcohol; being sedentary.

Having a coach, to hold you accountable, support you and cheer you on is often the difference between success or failure

And then there are the less obvious, but equally dangerous aspects of our lives, starting with stress and lack of quality sleep; toxic overload; medications for depression, PCOS, birth control, even pain to name a few. Add to the list adrenal fatigue and slow bowels. And this is just the start! All of these can impact our ability to function well and look our best. Feeling low physically and emotionally, not liking what you see in the mirror or how your clothes fit, add to your stress, which can lead to emotional eating creating a vicious cycle and a poor relationship with food and alcohol too.

One of more of these factors will lead most women to suffer from both of these fat types at some point in their lives. The most typical problem areas I hear complaints about are around the belly, the backs of the hips, arms. It is always that inch or 3 you can pinch that upset women the most and that they find the hardest to shift.

What to do about toxic fat This is where I come in. The reality is that our lifestyle choices matter, but life would be más boring if we lived each day like a saint. Working on your mindset to create healthier habits is the key to any long-term success. The physical changes to your shape begin when you match

this new mindset with a high-quality, convenient program to nourish your body, cleansing it of impurities and supporting it to manage stress.

I have successfully coached 1000’s of women from around the world to get the mindset and body they crave. Shifting both types of dangerous fats is a huge WIN WIN, not only do you get to look and therefore feel better BUT you are actually improving your overall health too. An independent study compared the system I use to that of a typical heart-healthy diet to find that those following my system had an average of 56% greater reduction in body weight, a 47% greater reduction in body fat, with more than twice the reduction of visceral fat and a 35% greater reduction in oxidative stress. The convenience of this system really simplifies life, great for all women from executives to athletes to mums. We all know that if it’s hard to do we just won’t stick to it. Even better: having a coach, in this case me, to hold you accountable, support you and cheer you on is often the difference between success or failure.

I have a range of one-to-one programs available, from Silver, Gold to Platinum, all personalised to suit goals, lifestyle and budgets – results are guaranteed or your money back, I’m that confident that with my support and my proven system, getting mind & body beautiful could be as little as 30 days away!

... AND SO TO By Ian Greenland

W

e've all been there at some point – sat in a darkened cinema, a long meeting, boring seminar or uneventful first date and something peculiar happens to us. As our shoulders drop, our thoughts become fuzzy and and our heads loll backwards, our eyelids, those plucky stalwarts of the blinking world suddenly realise they've been promoted from simple don't-letdust-or-too-much-light-in ocular flaps to full blown keep-this-person-from-fallingoff-their-chair-and-missing-the-film/ losing-their-job-etc-last-line-of-defense..... flaps. What follows is a courageous yet doomed effort by these tragic heroes of the body to arrest the inevitable drowsy tide, hauling themselves earthwards in a vain effort to drag the uncooperative and steadily backwards-tipping forehead with them (a diagram at this point might make all this clearer but I actually don't think it would). Basically, watch any man of 50 on a plastic chair outside a Spanish bar, full of sangria and out past his bedtime and you'll know that this epic tug of war twixt flap and bonce can rage for several minutes, but there's only ever one eventual victor.... As the plucky eyelids heave downwards with their last and dying breath, they valiantly drag the head back into alignment with the body one final time, only to tragically block out any visual stimulus still keeping the conscious brain in the game. Lucid thoughts cease. Sounds dull to nothing. Darkness consumes all.... a bit of dribble comes out.

Completely spent, their struggle now over, the eyelids glide through majestic cornfields under dream-like skies, reaching out for the long stalks as they sway gently in a calming breeze. Their wife and child wait for them through a heavy wooden door, enveloped in heavenly light. There's extremely emotional music playing.... It's basically the bit at the end of Gladiator but with eyelids. You're crying just thinking about it aren't you? And who's there to help blink tears from your eyes? That's right! – they really are amazing aren't they?... Anyway, this isn't going to be 1000 words about eyelids – my editor's very accommodating but I do think that might be pushing it – It's about what happens after eyelids blink their last – Sleep. Everyone sleeps. EVERYONE. If you don't reckon you do, you're a fool. What do you imagine's been happening in-between all those times you were awake? Why do you think your clock seems to jump forward 8 hours every day?? You been sleeping mate. There's no shame in it. Just because you don't see your Brad Pittses, Christina Aguilerases and Serena Williamseses doing it, they're all at it. Do you think

Serena would have won all that tennis if she didn't ever have at least a nap? Don't be ridiculous. Brad too, he wouldn't look like that if he NEVER slept – he'd look nackered. Animals sleep. According to scientists, every last stinking one of them, though some birds and aquatic mammals such as dolphins utilize something called unihemispheric slow-wave sleep, whereby only half the brain rests allowing the other half to continue with some basic level of functionality, permitting non-stop migrations and the like. A similar phenomenon can be observed in the human world among petrol station night staff and the teenagers working in B&Q on a Sunday. So why do we sleep, aside from trying to make it be Christmas or a

SNORING IS THOUGHT TO BE CAUSED BY A COMBINATION OF RESTRICTED AIR FLOW THROUGH THE NOSE AND THROAT AND UTTER SELFISHNESS. holiday sooner? Well, sleep helps your brain function properly, forming new pathways, aiding creativity, problemsolving skills and memory. It supports healthy growth and development in children and teens, muscle mass growth in adults and is a vital buffer for the immune system. It's involved in the healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels and it balances your hormone levels, including those which regulate hunger. Studies show with each hour of nightly sleep lost, the risk of obesity in teens increases – of course this may have more to do with the additional Wotsits consumed while watching an hour's extra Netflix.... Though specialists recommend teens get 8-10 hours per night for optimal neural and physiological performance, studies show the vast majority fall well short. Regardless of the benefits to them, just think how many less selfies and inane online comments there'd be in the world if they slept as much as they were advised to. Though experiments with rats show enough prolonged sleep deprivation can cause death, no human is known to have actually carked it from this alone. That fact provides little comfort

while I write this in the living room at 3am, having been forced out of bed for the third night running by my partner's snoring - I've tried to explain to her, the mother of my young child what it's like to be continually woken by the noise of a family member but I just don't think she gets it. Whilst lack of sleep has given me the idea for this piece, as I rub my stinging eyes, it's hard not to get irrationally resentful. I manage to rise above it.... Incidentally, snoring is thought to be caused by a combination of restricted air flow through the nose and throat and utter selfishness. Inversely, some adults it seems may be sleeping too much. For the majority, when questioned, 8 hours seems to be the magic number. I myself usually start clock-watching around 8 1/2 hours before I know my toddler will be dispensing with the pretence of the cot's safety sidebars as he leaps over them to grab the noisiest toy he can find to throw at me first thing in the morning. Mercifully, he sleeps 11 hours every night - he's clockwork … as opposed to the flashing, beeping battery-eaters that litter his bedroom floor and regularly put a dent in my wallet and occasionally my head. Anyway, by the time i've finished what i'm watching/reading/writing/ scraping off the walls around the highchair, brushed my teeth, “forgotten” to floss, squeezed earplugs so far into my ears i'll struggle to remove them (whilst i'm midnight-traipsing back to the fucking sofa anyway), i'm usually left with a potential 7 ½ hours and a niggling feeling i'm missing out on optimal z's. That niggling feeling has been assuaged by recent findings that on average, SEVEN hours is the holy grail in terms of health, longevity and neural performance. Of course the efficacy of that is dependent on the quality of the sleep, your own particular biology and that of your partner/arch-nemesis 2 feet over – whilst it's inconclusive whether 7 or 8 hours of nightly frustration at being kicked, woken, dribbled on and forced from your own bed is optimal, this new recommended shorter duration at least means a few less bruises and more waking hours for exacting revenge. Unfortunately, “revenge” usually comes in the impotent form of skipping ahead on whatever box-set we might be couple-watching, whilst whispering “you snooze, you lose” but secretly knowing it's me who's losing.... I'll be rewatching it with her tomorrow and I'll have bags under my eyes. Ian Greenland is a writer and photographer who will not be showing this particular article to his partner Gemma.... she snores even more when she's angry. www. greenlandphotography.com

ack in the 1970s BMW’s motto was “The Ultimate Driving Machine”. While this crystal clear mission statement has become lost in today’s fluffy “lifestyle and image” advertising, you only need to get behind the wheel of any rear or four-wheel-drive BMW model to understand that their engineers are driving enthusiasts. More recently the BMW M badge has taken on a life of its own, and is doing particularly well. In fact, from January to May of this year a total of 14,043 M

82

cars were sold, with a further 17,113 under the M Performance banner. The 31,156 total represents a 25% increase in sales over the same period in 2017.

stance are a huge improvement over its predecessor. It also looks like a model in its own right now rather than a scaled down poor man’s X6.

Right from the launch of the original X5 in 1999 BMW have always preferred the term SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) to describe their machines, over the SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) appellation normally used for the 4x4 genre.

Bi-LED headlamps are standard with full LED ‘iconlights’ as an option, while the front laminated windscreen is made from acoustic glass for reduced cabin noise. The base wheel size is 18-inch and optional wheel sizes go all the way to 21-inch. Our X4 30i test cars wore the 20-inch wheels with 245/40ZR20 and 275/40ZR20 Bridgestone Runflat rubber front and rear respectively.

Their second generation X4 is certainly no hulking SUV, and its sleeker lines, less fussy details, and more purposeful

TORQUE TALK

The cabin architecture takes its cues from the X3 that we drove a few months ago in Portugal, with the dashboard a direct transplant. It also shares the ‘X’ logo embossed into the aluminium panels on the inside of the front door trims and only seen when the doors are open. Since the use of LED lights has become more prolific with both exterior and interior lighting changing the colour of the cabin lighting at the touch of a button has become easy. The new X4 also offers a choice of six colours for its ambient lighting, with the control accessed through the telematics. BMW has always been at the forefront of lightweight materials and consistently chips away at making each generation of their cars larger yet lighter. The new X4 is 81mm longer on a 54mm longer wheelbase, is 37mm wider, 3.0mm lower, and weighs 50kg less. The drag coefficient has also been reduced to an impressive 0.30. The larger dimensions free up an extra 27mm of rear seat legroom, while maximum cargo space is increased by 30 litres to 1,430 litres, with the 40/20/40

split rear seat folded flat. This is partly accounted for by the additional underfloor storage compartment, while the boot area alone is now 525 litres. The powered tailgate is now a standard feature, with the adaptive load fastening system an option. The X4 is made in BMW’s Spartanburg factory in South Carolina alongside the X5 and X6, so it was no surprise that BMW brought us there for a first drive on the picturesque local country roads and their in-house test track. We had the choice of the X4 xDrive 30i and xDrive M40d for the road trip with only the M40d on track since the petrol M40i (360hp and 500Nm) was not available at this time. Less powerful alternative models are the xDrive 20i, 20d, 25d and 30d, all of which will be available within this year. I chose the 30i for the road route, and this turned out to be a comfortable and refined partner on both the highway and the winding country roads. With 252hp from 5,200 to 6,500rpm and 350Nm of torque between 1,450 to 4,800rpm the turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder X4 30i the balancer shaft

equipped motor revs freely and rapidly to the redline. Despite a vehicle weight of 1,720 kg (DIN), performance is brisk with the sprint to 100km/h taking 6.3 sec, and a top speed of 240km/h. From a subjective point of view the new X4’s ride comfort/handling compromise is a massive improvement. When we drove the previous model in early 2016 we were impressed by its sporty handling and tenacious grip, but were also battered into submission by its jarring ride. A lot of work was done on the adaptive damping system to improve the ride and handling of the new car, which shares its platform with the X3 launched at the end of last year. The X3 has a base suspension setting aimed at maximum comfort and would normally come with smaller wheel sizes. The X4’s base line is the X3’s optional sport suspension, which then undergoes fine-tuning for life in the inherently sportier X4. Back at the factory, Steffen Koch from BMW’s Driving Dynamics division explained that the X4 chassis is derived from the X3s, but uses a wider rear track, bespoke steel springs and driver

selectable settings for the adaptive dampers to achieve greater roll stiffness and sportier handling. “Variable ratio power steering is standard on all X4 models,” he explained. “This is slightly faster than the X3’s and provides its most responsive ratio up to 40 degrees of steering input. It is then linear from that point onwards for stability and consistency at speed.” The biggest suspension hardware change over the X3 is the 30mm wider rear track. In combination with the larger rear tyres this gives the X4 improved turn-into bends and more cornering stability. As both models share the same alloy wheels and suspension arms, the extra track width comes from the use of slightly wider rear wheel carriers on the X4’s rear axle. There is no change to the anti-roll bars, but the elastokinematics were adjusted to take the wider rear track and sportier suspension settings into account. One interesting nugget of information that Steffen gave up is that not everything in engineering can be objectively quantified by the computer or even on the test rig.

84

“We know from experience that dynamic stiffness goes beyond just the firmer suspension settings and wider track, since a perceptive driver can feel structural stiffness as a component of vehicle driving dynamics and transient responsiveness to steering inputs.” “So although the X3 hatchback and X4 fastback show similar torsional stiffness numbers on a static test rig that clamps their bodyshells at specifically defined points, all our test drivers say that the X4 subjectively feels structurally tauter,” he said. Compare the relative shapes of the X3 and X4 rear bodywork and it is clear that the lower rear profile of the ‘Coupe’ makes for a lower centre of gravity and a reduced rotating couple when changing direction. In addition the X4’s semi-tubular D-pillars have a potentially stiffer cross-section than the flatter D-pillar panels of the more upright and boxy X3. To improve secondary ride comfort the active dampers underwent significant work at BMW’s supplier to improve the stick/slip characteristics of the

internal fluid dynamics. Using computer modelling the holes that the hydraulic fluid move through were reshaped to enable a more progressive flow rate under pressure change. This results in a lower pressure delta under the sudden compression movements created by short, sharp bumps, and better ride comfort. Despite wearing the same 20-inch wheel and tyre sizes as its predecessor, the new X4 is like chalk and cheese in its ride quality, yet has lost nothing in handling and grip. If anything the ability of its suspension to “breathe over undulating surfaces makes it faster over bumpy roads as its occupants are far more comfortable. In this respect the new X4 is also a good advertisement for the paradigm that the enlightened engineering of conventional steel springs and active

86

dampers allows you sidestep the extra weight, cost and complexity of air suspension. Stability and predictability is enhanced if you can reduce the velocity with which a vehicle adopts its slip angle and takes a set when you turn the steering. To this end the EDC software was re-written to slow the roll rate as the steering moves off centre. By lowering the speed that dynamic loading is applied to the tyres and suspension bushings, a slower roll rate encourages more progressive handling behaviour and is also less uncomfortable for passengers. The sum total of all these changes culminates in the fact that where the X3 tends to understeer when pushed hard into slower bends the X4 is more neutral, has higher limits of mechanical grip and noticeably superior poise.

The M40i and M40d M Performance models have M specific suspension settings, M Sport differential lock and M Sport brakes. With these chassis features helping to deploy the 326hp at 4,400rpm and 680Nm of torque from 1,750 to 2,750rpm produced by the turbocharged 3.0 litre straight-six M Performance diesel the 1,895kg (DIN) M40d proved to be a real weapon on the short but technical BMW test track. In isolation, the 4.9 sec 0-100km/h sprint is stunning for a diesel 4x4, but it is the way the chassis handles this in extremis that is most impressive. With the DSC off and the rear differential locking to best advantage I was able to drive the X4 very hard on track, rocketing through the rising right hander on full power in third with the unloaded inside front wheel well over the kerb. The chassis responds very well to trail braking into tight turns like the 180-degree left-hander on BMW’s test track. Get your entry speed right down and aim for a late apex and the xDrive system allows you to get the power on progressively for a rapid understeer free exit using the turbo-diesel’s punchy low-end torque. The amount of driver satisfaction also depends on the DSC mode you select since the electronically controlled rear

differential lock takes its cues from the wheel slip sensors. Its locking modes are directly tied to the DSC switch, and with DSC stability system fully active the normal locking action is in play. Press the button once and you activate the DTC traction control, with its greater differential locking action. With DSC off the differential lock is fully active for the sportiest handling characteristics.

At that point, with more power being sent to the rear wheels than the front, I was able to negate any incipient understeer with my right foot and persuade the X4 into a satisfying fourwheel drift going into a medium speed bend. With the rear differential locked up I found I could exit slow turns with a whiff of power oversteer, the car totally stabilised by the torque at the front wheels.

DSC keeps things in shape for the less experienced driver, especially in slippery conditions. But after removing the first stage of the electronic nanny on the second lap, and completely on the third I found the X4’s handling at its best with the M Sport rear locking differential working full time sans any computer intervention.

The standard eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox is smooth and rapid, and a truly excellent device on the road. However, I found that even its Sport mode did not always react fast enough on track, so I ended up using

the paddle shifters to good effect. I only had to remember that a diesel engine has a much lower rev limit, but with so much low-end grunt on tap short shifting to ride the mountain of torque felt quite natural. BMW has done a great job with their second generation X4, which is a big leap over its predecessor particularly in the ride comfort stakes. It is also fun to drive, just as a real BMW should be, and in our books deserves to wear the crown in the mid-sized 4x4 ‘Coupe’ class.

STAR POWER By Ian Greenland

When the internet was first conceived and began to really enter the public consciousness, observers saw it as the herald of a new type of democracy. This democratization of truth, global transmission of ideas and free access to information promised the capacity to overthrow corrupt regimes and shift the power dynamics of a desperately imbalanced world... but then came the cat videos... and the porn... and the cat porn (probably – Ed.) So many of the web's cries for furtherment have been drowned out by the sheer volume of crap it simultaneously facilitates.

O

f course I'm not saying the internet has had no positive effect on society. You can probably name at least a couple of worthy movements it's helped ignite.... #MeToo. Furthermore, train journeys are certainly less grating now all young people are quietly staring at their phones instead of like, you know, like saying things to like one another... and stuff. What it's also done is put the world at our fingertips – well at least the fingers of the hand that's not reaching for the debit card. We can order just about anything we want to eat, read, wear, drive or watch and have it delivered to us quicker than you can say “Remember when it was just Teletext?” But since we're no longer trying things on before we buy, or giving them a good shake to see if bits fall off, and the sellers themselves are unlikely to tell us if something's a bit shit, it's befallen the vast online community to voice their opinions on the goods and services we're throwing money at. Whether it's a hotel, restaurant or Union Jack emblazoned vibrator, chances are at least one member of the public's already “gone there” and is just itching to attach a star rating to their thoughts. The reality is with such clamorous

competition in all sectors, venues, eateries, products and small businesses often live or die according to crowd mentality and evidence shows variance of just half a star on Trip Advisor can have real financial impact on its recipient. The problem is in regulating not just the quality, but the legitimacy of all the oars being stuck in. Trip Advisor is replete with fake reviews (both glowing and scathing), non-existent venues, axes being ground, extortions being attempted.... Tales of megalomaniacal punters dangling the threat of withering reviews as leverage for complimentary food and booze point to a level of entitlement and opportunism rarely seen outside the Houses of Parliament. Of the millions of everyday folk chiming in with their thoughts online each day, a great many do so intending merely to help and inform, and if you can shortcut to the useful info through the agendas, prejudices and general layman ignorance, you might just find THE perfect sandwich toaster, but put your faith in the wrong voice and you could end up with a sandwich toaster which is not a very good sandwich toaster at all. The stakes are that high.

At least with professional critics, there are a relatively small number of personalities to be heard and perspectives to account for. Over time and repeated exposure to these voices, we learn how to navigate aspects of both their expertise and bias when conducting our own implicit assessment of their opinion - I know that if Jeremy Clarkson is reviewing a car I'm interested in buying, his positive take on the engine reliability and performance stems from genuine passion, experience and knowledge, whilst his mockery

of its funny name is the result of his trademark xenophobia, and his take on the discomfort of the interior invariably rooted in the tightness of his crap, faded, denim dad-jeans. As such, I can safely purchase the car in the knowledge that a) The engine is sound, b) I don't hate foreign people and c) My jeans are better than his. Jeremy Clarkson, though insufferably smug, is therefore a known quantity and as such, useful to me as a critic. The problem with trusting the online product review of a total stranger is that I know nothing about their personal relationship to the brand in question, how tight their jeans may or may not be, or whether they even wear jeans. If they say a car interior is uncomfortable, that might not be transparent bias driven by bad trousers, but the result of a genuinely uncomfortable car interior. Conversely, the interior of the car could be flawless, but its atmosphere rendered “uncomfortable” because they'd just drunkenly soiled themselves or said something extremely racist in front of a passenger (veering back into Clarkson territory here but hopefully you get my point).

There are so many unknown variables, prejudices and personality traits to account for when dealing with the global reach and relative anonymity afforded reviewers by the internet. As such, we start to apply our own guesswork and prejudicial filters to public reviews online.

There are so many unknown variables, prejudices and personality traits to account for when dealing with the global reach and relative anonymity afforded reviewers by the internet. I was texting a friend of mine about this article. She's a bit of a grammar fascist and she told me she would never trust an online review by someone who didn't know how to correctly use apostrophes. I replied “Your being silly, their more important things to worry about”. She didn't dignify a response. Incidentally, if you don't understand why that crap attempt at humour was an attempt at humour, there's no shame, but it's unlikely she's ever bought anything on the basis of one of your reviews.

We're even known to judge the person whose opinion we're reading based simply on their username. Whilst I would instantly dismiss the musical musings of a member of Joe-public with the handle Keane_Fan_81 due to my loathing of the insipid piano-bothering British band, his moniker might actually have been conferring love on the angry, midfieldbothering Man United footballer Roy Keane... and as such should have been instantly dismissed for an entirely different reason. With everyone and their pornstar cat writing online reviews these days, you've got to know how to navigate not just their agendas and prejudices, but your own.... and all you wanted was a decent fucking toasted sandwich. When did it all get so complicated?! At least you always know where you stand with Clarkson.... the great big twat.

SPANISH ELECTIONS By Padre Peter

I

n the 2008 general election for the Spanish Congress of Deputies, the Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) party obtained 1.14% of the vote nationally. The Izquierda Unida (IU) party received 3.81% of the national vote. The ERC took three seats in the Cortes, the IU (unkindly dubbed by many political commentators “the Loony Left”) only two. In the December 2017 regional elections called by Madrid following upon the Unilateral Declaration of Independence by the Parliament of Catalonia, the prounion with Spain Ciudadanos (Citizens) party came out on top in the popular ballot, but pro-independence

138

Republican parties won a majority of the seats, thus ensuring that the troubled political situation continued. At the time of writing It is unclear how the new Prime Minister, “El Guapo”, “the handsome” Pedro Sanchez, will manage. On 31 May 2018 his party, the PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero Español) filed a no-confidence motion in Mariano Rajoy’s Partido Popular (People’s Party) government, which passed with the support of Unidos Podemos (United We Can), and Basque, Valencian and Catalan regionalist and nationalist parties. With Spain ranking below countries like the United Arab Emirates, Uruguay, Qatar or Botswana in the world country corruption index, Señor Sanchez and his party perhaps have a valid point, but he now heads a minority government, supported by parties

whose avowed aim is to break free from Spain. But he has the advantage that there are, at the last count, something like eight pro-independence parties in Catalonia, not all of whom see eye to eye on how independence may be achieved, whilst the previous President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, and four of his ministers, remain in self-imposed exile in Belgium. The price of support may well be the issuance of a general pardon. This situation, and the general instability in which the whole of Spain finds itself, is the result of the Spanish electoral system, although the system used in the United Kingdom has also been known to give rise to an almighty mess! The system used in Spain, however, known as the d’Hondt or Jefferson system, is used also in a number of countries throughout the European Union, and for elections to the European parliament. It is also

used within that parliament for elections to the various chairs of parliamentary committees and delegations, and to determine the political composition of such bodies. (The “Jefferson” system used for elections in the United States actually has slight variations, but is basically very similar) The d’Hondt system (named after its inventor, Victor d’Hondt, a Belgian lawyer and mathematician) has been used in Spain since the death of Franco for elections to the Congress, the lower chamber of the Spanish parliament. The autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla each have an initial allocation of one seat, whilst the fifty provinces each have two. The remaining 248 seats are then allocated according to each constituency’s registered population. Thus Madrid has 36 seats, Barcelona has 31 whilst Soria has just two. Voters cast their votes for a party’s list of candidates rather than for individual candidate. Any list not obtaining at least 3% of the valid votes cast is automatically excluded. It can readily be seen, therefore, that the system favours the larger parties nationally, but also acts in favour of small regional parties who may concentrate their effort in a smaller number of constituencies rather than spreading their appeal across the entire country. We noted an example of this in the opening sentences of this article. The ERC concentrated their vote. The IU vote was spread too thinly.

constituency. Any votes “left over” will be discarded, and the aim must be to discard as few as possible. For example, let us imagine a constituency in which are there are 7 seats available. 230,000 votes have been cast for 4 parties. If it is decided that each seat is worth 30,000 votes and Party A has received 100,000 votes, it can receive three seats, with 10,000 votes discarded. Party B has received 80,000, and so will receive two seats, with its 20,000 “spare” votes discarded. Party C with 30,000 votes will receive a clear one seat, whilst Party D with 20,000 votes will receive no seats at all. We can see, therefore, that under this system 50,000 votes will be discarded, and only 6 seats will have been allocated. Lower the “price” to 25,000 votes per seat, and Party A can then “buy” exactly four seats, Party B three seats (with 5,000 votes discarded), Party C one seat (with 5,000 votes discarded) with Party D still without a seat. But eight seats have been allocated; one too many. We therefore have to find a number

Basically, it is claimed that the system is easy to work, based upon a repetitive process. But it depends upon a correct allocation of seats, which is altogether trickier. Each seat must “cost” the same number of votes, and each party will “buy” as many seats as it can, given the number of votes cast for it in any given

WHILST THE D’HONDT SYSTEM OPERATES IN AN AREA LIKE CATALONIA, THERE IS VERY LITTLE CHANCE OF THE INDEPENDENCE QUESTION EVER BEING RESOLVED, AND IT IS VERY LIKELY THAT DONALD TRUMP WILL RETURN FOR A FURTHER TERM IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

between 30,000 and 25,000 to give us the desired result of seven seats allocated with as few discarded votes as possible. A mathematical formula is used which, in this case, gives as a result A with 3, B with 3, C with 1, and D still with 0. This has been described as “a complex algorithmic detail”, and the writer sees no reason to argue this point! However, it clearly shows that Party A has been “short changed” with regard to Party B, and Party D is seriously disenfranchised. Translated to the United States, where the “Jefferson System” is virtually identical, it explains how Hilary Clinton gained the biggest popular vote, but Donald Trump became President. Whilst the d’Hondt system operates in an area like Catalonia, there is very little chance of the independence question ever being resolved, and it is very likely that Donald Trump will return for a further term in the White House. You read it here first!

THE GREAT Interest in organic food products has been rising steadily in recent years, but the majority of people still tend to choose conventional over organic foods. Some are discouraged by higher costs of organic food, while others are sceptical about organic being truly organic. People who choose to go organic might do so because they think organic produce tastes better, and/or believe that it’s safer, more nutritious, better for animal welfare or better for the environment.

produce is affordable and reliable, in terms of knowing where it comes from. You will find my favourite organic farmers market at the end of this article. The rise in sales appears to be due to increasing public concern about the use of pesticides, as well as increased awareness of how food is produced and how far it has traveled. To help people decide whether or not organic food is for them, I have compiled the following pros and cons of buying organic as well as suggestions for which organic foods are the best to buy.

Some fantastic options are on the rise on the coast, where organic

Reasons FOR buying organic food Organic food tastes better If you have ever bought an organic tomato, versus a traditional one, you know that the organic tastes better and will keep much longer. Organic food comes from healthy soil and plants; it’s free from pesticides and other harmful chemicals, which helps ensure that the food has more flavour. In a number of studies where people did taste tests, they chose the taste of organic food over non-organic food. Organic foods meet high standards To be certified organic a farmer must complete grueling tests and meet stiff regulations. When you shop for a product with an organic seal you know that the producer has worked hard to get it. Food may be termed organic only if it meets rigorous standards. To be organic, food has to be grown, processed and handled in the proper way. When you eat organic food, you can be sure that it is a product of the highest standards. Organic foods support your local farm Meeting producers at an organic farm where they sell the food that is their pride and joy is magic! I know it’s time-consuming but one of my favourite things to do on a Saturday is visit a farmers market and feel, smell and connect with what I’ll be cooking during the week. As we know, industrial-scale agriculture poses serious harm to the local farming community, and the only realistic option that the local farmer has is to produce organic foods and sell to people who are committed to buying them. If you want to make sure that your local farming community can continue to thrive, and can continue to bring you healthy food that isn’t harmful, you might want to think about going organic.

Reasons NOT TO buy organic food Organic food is more expensive to buy than non-organic food This is unfortunately true, especially in big cities where prices are pushed up because of the price of market stalls, for example. By increasing demand we can hope to make it easier for farmers markets to spread and operate at a lower cost. Shopping organic is time-consuming Yes, this is a biggie and it can be annoying - especially on the coast, as you have to go to several shops to find organic produce. On the other hand, I have found that organic produce keeps longer, so it’s a balancing act in the end. In my opinion I think its worth the time and effort.

Organic

Wine

Roses aren't just for looks - they give an early alert to the vineyard that certain diseases are arriving

The wine world buzz word for the past couple of years has been organic – these wines have caught on to such an extent in Europe that everyone has been taken by surprise, including wineries, which sadly can’t switch to making organic wines overnight. Along the Costa del Sol you’ll find these easily in wine bars. Keep Calm and enjoy a glass of wine! More than 8% of vineyards in Spain, France and Germany were organic by 2017, up from a minuscule number in these countries 10 years ago. I went to the Bordeaux Primeurs, the springtime auction of Bordeaux wines, in 2010 and there was a small sideshow of organic wines, pooh-poohed by many of the large wineries. “Just a bunch of aging hippies and missionary types,” sniffed one chateau marketing person. How that tune has changed! And Spain is one of the places where organic is making happy inroads, with some very good wines coming out. Andalusia has many hot new young “garage” wineries, often making hand-crafted organic wines. I visited the young Bodego Malvajío vineyard in Mijas Pueblo in March, a windy sunny day with the sea shimmering below, ducks and 144

even turkeys wandering among the vines. Nothing industrial about these vines! In July I fell in love with the spectacular vineyard at Doña Felisa, a winery northwest of Ronda, beautifully groomed and showing off the Serranía Rondeña hills at their best. The wines from both are very good. Larger mainstream Spanish wineries are taking note and even classic Bordeaux and the rest of France are now scrambling to “reconvert” – the term used to show that organic is the natural state of a vineyard.

headlines and pesticides were widely blamed. Then the World Health Organisation ruled that the herbicide glyphosate (its bestknown brand name is Roundup, from Monsanto) is a carcinogen. Yet more bad news: traces of glyphosate were found in 10 California wines. The traces were far, far below a level considered dangerous to health, but for the millions who don’t read past a headline, that detail was lost. Wine producers have been going

What organic is and what it isn't Simply put, organic wines are made from vines that have not been chemically treated with herbicides to kill weeds or pesticides to kill insects. These seemed like miracle cures in the 1960s and 70s, and they brought costs down sharply, part of what brought us those plonky €2 bottles: a vineyard using herbicides costs about half as much to manage as one where the soil is maintained mechanically. But 30 to 40 years later worried growers began seeing tired soil: healthy soil is crucial to making wine. A decade ago the disappearance of bees and other insects suddenly made world

organic not out of concern for consumers but because they want to save their vineyards and, longer term, their livelihoods, and because they are concerned about the health of people working in the vineyards, the ones who spray the chemicals. For small family wineries in particular, this is a very personal matter.

What do they cost, and do they taste different? Do organic wines taste different? They did, a decade ago. The difference is fading, as more top wineries bringing their skill to the organic world. It takes three years for a winery to become certified. It can take longer than that, however, for a winery to actually reconvert. During the first year costs go up while the quality of the grapes falls (a temporary problem) as vines adjust, so wineries tend to make the move in stages. If a winery tells you it isn’t certified but it makes organic wines, don’t believe them. If they say they are partway through certification, cheer them on. Organic wines cost more because they require more labour (more jobs, and that’s good).

Rose Box in La Cala de Mijas

SPAIN IS ONE OF THE PLACES WHERE ORGANIC IS MAKING HAPPY INROADS, WITH SOME VERY GOOD WINES COMING OUT. Grape growers usually need to invest in irrigation, new equipment and over time in new vines that are strong enough to face the competition from the ground covers essential to keeping the soil healthy. Expect to pay €12 and up at a specialty wine shop for any wine, a bit more for organic. Why pay more? It’s not a moral issue or about health and saving the planet; these are different products, just as a designer dress is not simply about design only, but about how well made the garment is.

A Menu as beautiful as Picasso’s Muse By Anna Gerlach By Anna Gerlach

What a treat to be in Marbella enjoying a fusion of French ambiance and pure Mediterranean taste. If you have a weak spot for organic, locally-grown foods and haven’t yet been to Boutique Hotel Paloma Blanca’s fine restaurant named after Picasso’s muse, Dora Maar, be sure to check this one out.

T

his newly renovated hotel stands out for a number of reasons: it is within walking distance to the beachfront, its saltwater pool is adjacent to the chill-out area featuring comfy sofas and a good mix of music genres for great relaxing – in addition to offering free wifi and parking! You can enjoy a hand-crafted coconut cocktail – served in a real coconut. Everything here is genuine, starting with the friendly staff. Owner Sophia, our lovely waitress Camilla and Head Chef Maurice Curtin all made us feel warmly welcomed and their passion for providing great customer service was evident in how they catered to every guest's dietary wishes. What did we enjoyed the most, after the food?: atmosphere, atmosphere and atmosphere! Dora Maar is the place to go if you’re looking for a spot where all your senses come to life: smelling the freshly-cooked food, looking at Picasso inspired artwork and the bright, inviting interior design while listening to upbeat music hits from several decades and tasting a wide array of flavours. In short: We loved it. Are you the smoked salmon type? Or is your heart set on steak – or what about chicken croquettes or slow-roast pork ribs? Vegans and vegetarians,

Sounds very exotic, looks really exotic, and tastes beautiful. A touch of citrus brought out the tuna’s freshness. A glass of a rich Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina helped us enjoy the taste of the first special main course: ribeye steak with baba ganoush and couscous. Our favourite main dish, however, was seabass fillet, cooked to perfection and garnished with fennel, creamy mashed potatoes and a fresh tomato with capers salad. A dream of a seafood dish. Despite very satisfying earlier courses, we remained curious about dessert. Our sweet dreams fell short of what we were actually served: popping candy on a superb sticky toffee sundae with fresh whipped cream on top and a mix of berries put a smile on all our faces. And then there was the walnut brownie with vanilla ice cream, mixed berries, and frozen raspberries – very colourful, a fine presentation. Dora Maar exceeded all our expectations. If you have no plans for dinner tonight, book a table at this truly fine restaurant and taste the pleasure yourselves.

Fine Al Fresco Dining by Bianca Keegan

Are you currently in the Marbella area and looking for an awesome steakhouse with an exciting ambiance, an al-fresco vibe and an impressive menu? Well, you can rest assured you will find all this and more at OAK Garden & Grill by La Sala, the go-to meat and steak restaurant located in Puerto Banús.

T

his venue stands out from the crowd with its intimate garden setting and welcoming and professional team. Besides La Sala’s signature dishes, Oak is well-known for its vast variety of delicious grill specialties with a range of over 10 premium beef plates from Wagyu Beef to American Black Angus, as well as its assortment of neatly selected national and local meats. Dining at Oak means enjoying food that has been cooked with care, a high level of expertise and finished with the delicious aroma of oak, olive and sarmiento wood. A true authentic dining experience! A+ FOR THE STARTERS In all honesty, every dish we sampled at Oak deserves an A+. It wasn’t only the meat that aced our taste test, but the fish and seafood plates also deserve a special mention. We started off with the langoustine and seabass Peruvian ceviche with mango and tiger’s milk, served in a fresh avocado jacket. With a slightly spicy kick, this exotic meal was the perfect start to our evening. This was followed by a Norwegian salmon tartare, marinated with ponzu sauce, ginger, toasted sesame seeds, wakame, tobico, wasabi and sriracha mayonnaise – wow! We haven’t stopped raving about the salmon’s complex nutty flavours! Last but

not least on our starter’s list came the fresh burrata with rocket salad, organic tomatoes and a lovely pesto dressing, which added just the perfect amount of punch. STEAK-FANS – THIS ONE’S FOR YOU! After getting a pretty good idea of the quality of food we were experiencing, we moved on to the main courses. So, here we go steak-fans! The 200gr brochette of premium Galician beef picaña impressed us with its unique flavour, a smoky wood fragrance combined with a fruity scent, that is created by slowly burning sugar crystals in the intense heat. This beef has to be some of the finest you will find along the Costa Del Sol! In addition to all the decadent meat, we were surprisingly impressed by Oak’s selection of fresh fish. Tasting the Thai style grilled sea bass served with papaya salad and nam jim sauce was a real highlight. The Asian flavours fused marvellously with the papaya’s pure sweetness.

Dining at Oak means enjoying food that has been cooked with care, a high level of expertise and finished with the delicious aroma of oak, olive and sarmiento wood.

Another shining star was our final main course; the seafood platter with a half lobster, tiger prawns, carabineros and crayfish, prepared with Aioli and a beautiful side salad.

Whilst every dish shone, we certainly loved the dessert. We couldn’t decide

whether we wanted to try the banana spring roll with dark chocolate and Baileys cream, or the red berry cup with mascarpone and Greek yoghurt. Eventually, the decision was made in favour of a traditional soufflé, flambé with Grand Marnier and prepared to perfection within only 12 minutes. A grand finale, which is usually so difficult to find in Marbella and gave Oak a final A+ on our report card! Oak Garden & Grill made a big impression on our team with its menu selection, quality and performance all receiving top marks. We will see you there for your next steaktastic dinner! Gold Medal for...

By Gwen Rees

We were looking out over clear skies and blue ocean, watching windsurfers do impressive stunts. Morrocco’s profile was just visible in the far distance. Beach and sun club Bronzzzano is a place full of surprises, a go-to location for events, weddings and chill-out days where you lie by the pool and enjoy wonderful food combined with music that helps you escape the busy Marbella lifestyle.

I

t’s time for a little history lesson: owner Andrés had the idea for the name "Bronzzzano" in a dream. The exclusive beach club, located on the waterfront, opened its doors in 2017 with a stunning opening party. The restaurant provides very comfortable indoor and outdoor seating and Balinese beds next to the large saltwater swimming pool; it also has an upper terrace where the VIP restaurant gives its guests a terrific view of the Mediterranean sea. When we arrived at the sumptuous entrance, we were treated to a very warm welcome. Sitting outside in the middle of summer at first sounded like a bad idea, but the canopy adds atmosphere and a light wind made the high temperature pleasant rather than just bearable. You can imagine that decision-making was not the easiest here, when we opened the 10-page menu (their hashtag #bronzzzanofood, which appears on the first page, gives you a

sense of their level of engagement). The food table features everything from sushi to salads, poultry, fish, shellfish and a great variety of meat dishes – Bronzzzano is reputed to have the best Argentinian meat in town. They also have a good range of gluten-free desserts. We chose wisely, sensing that we were about to experience some true food passion here. We started with teriyaki prawns & sauce in tempura – none of us will ever forget the freshness of this dish; it tasted as if the prawns came straight from the sea. The sauce was slightly spicy; strawberry and melon pieces were the perfect touch. Number two on the starters list looked like a simple wrap but tasted of so much more. The flavourful layer of slowly roasted beef sirloin was perfect combined with gherkin, Dijon sauce and a fluffy, light filling of organic mixed leaves, served with deluxe potato wedges. The main courses were another surprise for our tastebuds. We enjoyed the beef sirloin risotto, so rich in flavour and beautifully decorated with a parmesan cheese crisp; we had it with a glass of rosé. The 250g Iberian presa pork fillet deserves high praise here, with its roasted sweet potato puree.

Bronzzzano’s #sweetmoment desserts were all decorated with colourful flowers, giving us a true sense of summer. We had the fluffy cheesecake with passion fruit and berries, and we also tasted the sweet temptation of the banoffee pie with whipped cream, banana slices, a dark chocolate base and dulce con leche, followed by caramelized pineapple carpaccio with white chocolate mousse and a crunchy gingerbread cookie. Our favourite sweet moment, however, was when we tasted the refreshing white chocolate with smooth praline watermelon filling. Our conclusion: Bronzzzano certainly ticks all the boxes. With over 15 weddings booked for the next 2 months, the venue is the perfect tip to offer to all brides-to-be. It also impresses with its

Where Food Meets Art by Amie Clemenger

Introducing Truffles; the restaurant with a one-of-a-kind taste experience! With its creative, ever-changing menu, this five star venue attracts new customers whilst keeping its long-term guests excited with new surprise dishes. We couldn’t fault the gourmet cuisine, reasonable prices or friendly team.

T

he young boutique-style location, located on a busy square in the heart of Elviria, Marbella opened its doors in March this year, offering a worldwide fare, fabulous interior, candlelit tables and, of course, a warm welcome. Customers adore their carefully-selected wine list, which complements each dish perfectly, mouth-watering evening menus and the traditional Sunday roast. To have dinner at Truffles means spending a memorable evening under the stars where you can taste the passion for cooking in every bite. The head chef’s goal is to deliver a taste experience derived from his extensive travels around the world. When we first glanced at the menu, we had no idea

what to expect from the imaginative sounding items including "Bloody Mary jelly" and "lentils and Amarena cherries." No matter how creative our minds became nothing could prepare us for the meal we were set to enjoy, with every dish exceeding all our expectations! We started off with raw tuna, served with avocado, vodka compressed celery this is not a joke - and, here it comes: the Bloody Mary jelly. Beautifully decorated with floral elements, we fell in love with the avocado mousse and the lightly spiced celery. What followed was more surprises and definitely an explosion of distinct aromas. The coffee cured seared foie grass was served on a bed of braised lentils and those sweet, juicy

Amarena cherries topped with red wine reduction. The last starter we tried was a special of the day; jumbo king prawns infused with fresh citrus and served with herb butter. After an excellent variety of very beautifully decorated starters, we couldn’t wait to see what Truffles held in store for main course. One dish we have to mention is the fillet of cod with orange and fennel filled tortellini served on prawn bisque — a dish that perfectly illustrated the creativeness of this unique establishment. Besides a tenderly cooked black angus fillet steak, we also had the oven roasted rack of lamb with dukkah nuts crust, as well as mini falafels, smoky eggplant puree and honey glazed carrots. A DESSERT LIKE A FIREWORK Our stomachs were pretty full by this point! However, when we saw the first dessert arrive, we knew we would find a little room for what can only be described as the best lemon macaron we’ve ever tasted, sculptured on a plate right next to the raspberry semifreddo with limoncello mascarpone and Mediterranean fruits. The sweetness mixed with the semifreddo’s cool freshness was simply brilliant! And last, but surely not least, we finished the night with Truffles’ signature dessert, "Truffles Chocolate Mess," consisting of a trio of truffles, chocolate ice cream and white chocolate mousse. Presentation-wise

What followed was more surprises and definitely an explosion of distinct aromas.

this one deserved the first place prize! The whole colourful "mess" was a piece of pure aesthetic and wouldn’t have looked out of place in a modern art gallery. What is so original about Truffles is how the chefs create something truly unique out of the usual everyday dishes that you can find on a lot of menus around Marbella. Every dish boasts multiple combinations making it that little bit different and by saying "different," we mean "absolutely fantastic".
