PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Hot enough for you? We have had an amazing summer so far and are still looking forward to many more parties before the beach clubs close for the season and we have the chance to have a bit of a rest – we’re not as young as we used to be! Marbella has had yet another bumper year, with visitors flocking to the Coast from far and wide and it seems that “Iron” Mike Tyson has heard that this is a great place to relax and enjoy yourself. If you are interested in the great sport of boxing – or even if you are more familiar with his exploits thanks to the gossip pages – don’t miss An Evening With Mike Tyson on Thursday September the 18th at the H10 Andalucía Plaza. It’s an unmissable opportunity to meet a living legend and, hopefully, hear about his career highlights and the direction that his life has taken since he gave up the sport. On the subject of great sportsmen we recently had the privilege of catching up with Jan Struwe, whose Young Driver Aston Martin Racing Team won the gruelling 24hour Le Mans race in June. Jan is a great character, a true enthusiast for the sport and yet has the calmness that’s needed to perform at the highest level; when speaking to him it is soon obvious that his presence must have been the biggest secret weapon that his team had at its disposal. Some of the finest teams in history have made a bit of a mess of things when faced with the extreme challenge of Le Mans, which makes Young Driver Aston Martin Racing Team’s achievement all the greater.
In the past couple of weeks we were also happy to have some time to catch up with ex-Premier League footballer, David Bentley who recently announced that he was leaving football to spend more time with his family in Marbella – and who could blame him? Now heavily involved with the La Sala Group he has more than enough to keep him occupied and, while many were shocked to note that a Premier League footballer was bowing out at the tender of age of 29, we were less surprised. Hopefully we will be seeing a lot more of him and the family at La Sala’s various venues around the Coast from now on.

We might have spent a fair bit of time enjoying ourselves this month, but we also put in some serious graft. One of our favourite tasks was working with Sunborn, the company behind Gibraltar’s five-star floating hotel, to produce a brochure in line with their high-end image. We have had the chance to look around Gibraltar’s fabulous new hotel and if you haven’t yet visited it for an overnight stay or even for dinner, we can highly recommend it. This is truly a brilliant solution to The Rock’s accommodation problems and it is such a glamorous – yet comfortable – venue we reckon that even more visitors than usual will be arriving in Gib for the sole purpose of checking in at the Sunborn.

Gibraltar is also in the news this month after the great and the good came together to celebrate the beginning of construction of the eagerly anticipated World Trade Centre. Everyone who was anyone in this small but powerful territory had been issued with an invitation and gathered at Bayside Road for the festivities, which included the Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo entertaining guests by driving a JCB!

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT
I R O N
MIKE TYSON Mike Tyson, who at the age of 21, became the youngest heavyweight champion in history, will be coming to Marbella for a one-night-only gala event. SOCIETY Marbella brings you a whistle-stop tour through the boxing career of one of sport’s most famous and controversial personalities.
“God, it would be good to be a fake somebody rather than a real nobody.” — Mike Tyson Photo by Ronda Churchill www.rondachurchill.com

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT
Tyson’s very first fight was… At nine years of age with an older and physically superior gang member who pulled the head off one of his pet pigeons despite Tyson’s pleas to have it back. Speaking to Details magazine, Tyson said that it was at this moment that he realised he had some serious strength: “Everybody was, like, hollering, clapping. It felt good to win, to get more shots in, but it felt really good that everybody was clapping for me.”
He got introduced to boxing after… Being sent to tough state school Tryon School for Boys in upstate New York for troublesome youths. By this stage, aged 13, Tyson had been arrested 38 times for committing petty crimes and fighting those who ridiculed his high-pitched voice and lisp. As a pupil of the school, Tyson was introduced to boxing manager and trainer Cus D’Amato who not only saw potential in the young boy but a person in need of a mentor, a confidant, friend and father figure. Cus D’Amato later became the 16-year-old Tyson’s legal guardian when his mother died. When Cus later passed away, it must have felt to Tyson that he had a lost the only father he had ever known and many people have pinpointed his death as the start of Tyson’s personal and professional troubles.
His rise to stardom occurred began when… The 18-year-old Tyson made his first professional debut in 1985, defeating Hector Mercedes in a first round knockout. He had 15 bouts in his first year as a professional boxer. Fighting frequently, Tyson won 26 of his first 28 fights by a knockout; 16 of those in the first round. The calibre of his opponents became increasingly challenging, contenders included James Tillis, David Jaco, Jesse Ferguson and Mitch Green, as it seemed everybody wanted to fight the great Mike Tyson. The young boxer’s winning streak attracted a storm of media attention with many people tipping Tyson as the next great heavyweight champion.
Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in history at… The age of 20 when he defeated Trevor Berbick, who had been considered Tyson’s toughest opponent, in just two rounds. Veteran British reporter Donald Saunders wrote in The Daily Telegraph: “The noble and manly art of boxing can at least cease worrying about its immediate future, now [that] it has discovered a heavyweight champion fit to stand alongside Dempsey, Tunney, Louis, Marciano and Ali.”
‘Tyson mania’ was at an all time high when… The boxer faced Michael Spinks in the ring. Boxing pundits were predicting a titanic battle of styles, with Tyson’s aggressive infighting coming up against Spinks’s skilful out-boxing and footwork. The fight ended in a 91 second massacre with Tyson knocking Spinks out in the first round; many consider this to be the peak of Tyson’s fame and boxing ability. Spinks, previously unbeaten, would never fight professionally again.
Tyson had the ultimate comeback against… Frank Bruno in 1996. After some personal issues, it was an important win for Tyson. Ken Jones reported in British newspaper, The Independent: “If not entirely Tyson reincarnate, he had looked a considerable heavyweight, still devastatingly quick and powerful.”
In a surprising turn of events… Evander Holyfield who was given virtually no chance of winning by boxing pundits, defeated Tyson by a technical knockout in the 11th round. Tyson’s camp called for a rematch under allegations of Holyfield’s frequent head-butts during the bout. On June 28 1997, Tyson vs Holyfield II took place and soon became the most controversial events in modern sports when Tyson bit the ear of his opponent. It seems, the episode was a case of Tyson’s passion for the game overcoming his sense of self-discipline, as is so often witnessed on the football pitch, for example Eric Cantona’s karate kick at a heckling spectator and Suarez’s more recent biting incident. The occurrence did not help the boxing champ; Tyson went on to meet Julius Francis and Lennox Lewis in the ring.
In 2005, Tyson stunned the boxing world by announcing…
He would quit the sport. After a professional career spanning 30 years, Tyson’s knockout power and intimidation factor made him the sport’s most dynamic box office attraction. Many believe Tyson was the last great heavyweight champion.
Mike Tyson will be in Marbella on... Thursday 18th September for a special one-off event – An Evening with Mike Tyson at the H10 Plaza Andalucía Hotel in Puerto Banús. At the event, Mike will be available for a meet and greet and photo opportunity; there will also be live entertainment, a fourcourse gourmet meal and a Tyson memorabilia charity auction.

HOT OFF THE PRESS
These recent programmes are just too good to miss – catch up on the following online.
Rain Girl by Gabi Kreslehner
Common
This gritty drama by multi award winning writer Jimmy McGovern deals with the UK’s highly controversial “Joint Enterprise” law. Young Johnjo (Nico Mirallego) finds himself the getaway driver after he gives three friends a lift to a pizzeria for a stand-off with a local rival, where they end up stabbing an innocent bystander. Despite having absolutely no knowledge of the pre-planned crime, Johnjo faces a murder charge because of Joint Enterprise, the law that attributes criminal liability on those directly or indirectly involved in a crime. This feature length drama leaves the viewer with a whole new outlook on this commonly used legal practice.
The Human Mannequin
Teenager Louise Wedderburn suffers from a rare genetic condition, which causes her body to freeze as her muscles turn into bone. This Channel 4 documentary charts her struggle to pursue a modelling career despite facing such a difficult disease. The viewer is humbled by the 21 year-old who, throughout the programme, states “It’s never going to stop me from doing what I want to do.”
Rain Girl invites the reader into the criminal underbelly of human society, following sensitive and thoughtful police officer Franza Oberwieser in her newest case. Franza’s personal life plays out in parallel to this, which helps to create a rich narrative that is thought provoking and unique.
Inamorata by Megan Chance Set in 19th century Venice among the city’s slowly crumbling façade, society’s sensuous and evil affairs are brought to light. Impossible to put down and utterly bewitching, Chance has shown yet again that she is a masterful storyteller.
‘Britain’s Poshest Nannies’ Step inside the doors of Norland College, the training ground for the UK’s most elite child carers. Norland nannies have been highly sought after by the country’s most affluent families for centuries, including Kate and Will’s pride and joy - and third in line to the throne - Prince George. These women undergo a rigorous year of training, which will eventually lead them into a lifetime of wellpaid employment; some nannies command a six figure salary. Fascinating, fun viewing.

All of a sudden, being Rhett didn’t mean so much anymore. All of a sudden my friendship with Clementine was in jeopardy and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do.”

TURN ! IT UP
‘Crazy Stupid Love’ Cheryl Cole
This catchy dance track is the debut single from the Geordie beauty’s fourth studio album Only Human, which will be released in November. It features a trumpet, giving the tune a jazz edge and making a dead cert floor filler for the summer.
‘Worst Behaviour’ Drake
‘Street Love’ Rough Copy
You might recognise these three cheeky chaps from hit show X Factor. They have burst onto the music scene with a catchy reworking of 80s classic, ‘Street Love’. After JLS announced their split last year, there is definitely a gap in the market for another R ‘n’ B group and we think Rough Copy fit the bill perfectly.
This is the latest track from Canadian born and masterful rapper Drake and, as per usual, Drake delivers soulful chords alongside punchy lyrics, which are relevant and tell a whole story to the listener.
‘Liberate’ Eric Prydz
Eric Prydz specialises in dance anthems and this new single is no exception. It has a beautiful summer sound, made even more apparent in the song’s music video, which follows two friends frolicking beneath the water on Australia’s East Coast.
‘Always’ MK (Route 94 remix)
Route 94 has delighted house music fans with the remix of this well-loved track. Joyous grooves give ‘Always’ a whole new sound, which is both uplifting and captivating.

Tom Daley and his boyfriend Dustin Lance Black were left thankful for their lives last month when the plane they were travelling on had to make an emergency landing in Russia. The Olympian was en route back to the UK after competing in the Shanghai World Diving Cup and tweeted “Scary to emergency land in RUS after recent events, yet no word on what problem is after an hour surrounded by fire engines #VirginAtlantic.” Daley was obviously referring to the recent Malaysian Airlines tragedy when flight MH17 crashed near the Ukraine-Russia border, killing all 298 people on-board. We are glad to hear Tom and his partner returned home safe and sound and our thoughts are with the friends and family of the victims of the MH17 crash.

Rumours of an imminent split between power couple Beyonce and Jay Z have been circulating for a while now and Queen Bey’s recent Instagram post of the couple holding hands with their two year-old daughter Blue Ivy have only added fuel to the fire, with many people questioning whether it was some sort of an attempt to put on a united front. The New York Post reported that the famous couple are intending to split following their On The Run Stadium tour of North America and Europe. It is also claimed that the marriage trouble began back in May when Solange Knowles brutally struck out at Jay Z in an elevator. Only several months ago it would have been impossible to imagine the pair ever thinking of ending their seemingly solid marriage.
Former Girls Aloud songstress Cheryl Cole has wed her French beau, Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini after just three months. The X Factor judge announced news of the marriage online with the caption, “I usually do not discuss my personal life but to stop the speculation I want to share my happy news” and a photograph of her diamond encrusted wedding band. The singer and Jean-Bernard apparently tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on the luxury island of Mustique. The pair met at the Cannes Film Festival and are said to be smitten with each other. The big question now is, will Cheryl finally remove her Mrs C tattoo, after adamantly refusing to erase it following her split from premiership footballer Ashley Cole in 2010?

Hot Celebrity Bodies Photos ® Instagram
For most of us summer is the best time of year but there is one major drawback to the sunny season – endless photographs of flawless celebrity bodies filling up our Instagram and Twitter news feeds. Celebs all year round are known for posting smug selfies at every possible opportunity– some more than others - but the smugness reaches new levels at this time of year, as A-listers jet off on their sickeningly luxurious ‘vaycays’. Serena Williams serenaded her Insta followers with pics of her toned figure as she holidayed in Croatia last month while Kim Kardashian, never one to be camera shy, posted ‘belfies’ (or bottom selfies) on a recent break in Mexico.
Man of the Moment – Sam Smith
Tulisa’s ‘Reveal All’ Documentary
This will be pure TV gold, no doubt about it. Tulisa Contostavlos is to star in a ‘tell all’ documentary about her year from hell following her arrest on suspicion of supplying cocaine in June 2013. The show, reportedly called Tulisa: The Price of Fame will document her thoughts and feelings since the whole drugs scandal blew up when tabloid newspaper, The Sun conducted a covert operation to expose the former N-Dubz singer. The 26 year-old recently walked free from all charges after Judge Alistair McCreath ruled that the case “cannot go any further” because of the lies journalist Mazher Mahmood told throughout the proceedings. Standing outside court in London last month, she said: “Let me be perfectly clear. I have never dealt drugs and have never been involved in taking or dealing cocaine… I have not been able to work for the past year, and I am now looking forward to resuming my career.”

Is it just us or is everyone falling in love with male vocalist Sam Smith at the moment?! Since erupting onto the music scene with that voice on Disclosure’s massive hit ‘Latch’, women have been swooning about the 22 year-old. Mega-fans will no
doubt have heard about and most probably attended his Summer Series gig at Somerset House, London last month. Certainly, ‘it’ girls Cara Delevinge, Daisy Lowe, Georgia May Jagger and Suki Waterhouse got the invite. What could be better than Sam Smith’s vocals in such a beautiful setting on a warm summer evening? Yes, we are stumped too.

Línea Directa REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Línea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_ of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car.
STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre
on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you.

This past month has seen a touch of glamour returning to the Coast with a host of celebs deciding to pay us a visit Footloose and fancy free before further touring commitments, British girl band Little Mix have been kicking back in Marbella. The glamorous foursome decided to take a mini break here on the Coast before heading back on the road. With more than four million singles sold worldwide, Little Mix, whose career is going from strength to strength, were seen enjoying dinner at buzzing celebrity haunt, restaurant La Sala Banús, before heading out to the übercool Aqwa Mist club next door.
Gareth Bale was in town again, but this time he kept it so low key even the paps didn’t catch him. The Real Madrid superstar rented an apartment in Nueva Andalucía and decided to stay away from the more glitzy dining spots frequented by his fellow team mates. Instead he opted for a night out at Da Bruno Sul Mare, where the owners, Bruno and Giuseppina Filippone managed to get a quick snap with him. It’s the only evidence that he was even here. Sneaky! Boxing Promoter Eddie Hearn, Professional Boxer Matthew Macklin and Boxing Manager Daniel Kinahan headed to new restaurant, The Boardwalk on Marbella’s Paseo Maritimo to plan Matthew’s upcoming fight against Jorge Sebastian Heiland. The fight will take place on the 30th August in Dublin. The trio appeared in deep discussion as they enjoyed lunch on the stunning terrace. Eddie’s visit was a short but sweet one, with the Boxing Manager flying in and out in one day especially for the meeting. The Boardwalk offers casual beachside dining with beautiful sea views, with everything from Afternoon Tea and Ice Cream Sundaes to Chateaubriand and Seafood Platters appearing on the extensive menu. Furthermore The Boardwalk also supports local charity Positively Pink, donating 1 cent of every euro spent to the very deserving charity.

English boxer - and Olympic gold medalist - James DeGale MBE sure knows how to party. After seeing what Ibiza had to offer, he decided it wasn’t quite ready to go home and flew straight to Marbella to carry on partying in style. The Londoner, who is also known as Chunky, popped into the Sisu Boutique Hotel Pool Party to support his friend DJ Colin Francis (who brought us the No. 1 album Marbella Sessions 2013). He was also seen at News Café in Puerto Banús, happily posing for photos with fans.

After returning to Spain following the premature elimination of Spain’s 2014 World Cup team, Real Madrid centreback Sergio Ramos arranged a stag do for his brother, René Ramos in Marbella. Sergio, who is the youngest player ever to win 100 caps, wanted to rent a villa for 10 friends with total privacy in Sierra Blanca but decided it was too expensive and headed to Elviria instead. He earns around 4.5 million euros a year from Real Madrid, so it’s nice to see he still watches the pennies! He spent most of the time trying to avoiding photographers, however he was happy to pose for Sinitillate when he attended one of their parties at Pangea night club in Banús.
Former boxing world champion Ricky Hatton headed to Marbella to drown his sorrows after allegedly moving out of his family home following a bust-up with fiancée Jennifer, mother of his children, Millie, two, and 10 month-old Fearne. Hatton, who received an MBE in 2010, spent the day at Ocean Club surrounded by a group of stunning, bikini clad babes (one of his lady friends was even kind enough to try and cheer Ricky up with a massage). Of course he couldn’t come to Marbella without checking out his mates’ professional boxing gym, MGM Marbella. Ricky tweeted, ‘Great to see old pals @mattmacklin @Seamo89 and what a place to train @MGM_Marbella first class’. The 35 year-old then joined Matthew Macklin at Slainte, the Irish sports bar in Banús to watch the World Cup game between Belgium and Algeria.
La Sala UK shareholder, Alex OxladeChamberlain has put his first bittersweet taste of World Cup football in the England squad behind him to enjoy some down time from football in the jet-set resort of Puerto Banús. The 20 year old Arsenal footie star kick-started his holiday by visiting Sala Group’s boutique beach club La Sala by The Sea, enjoying lunch on a luxurious sun bed while listening to the sounds of a DJ, live sax and bongos. That evening The Ox, as he is known, met friends for a meal at the bustling La Sala restaurant.

Sunderland striker Connor Wickham caused a stir during his recent trip to the Coast. The 21-year-old racked up an staggering £25,000 bar bill while partying with friends at the Sintillate Champagne Spray Party. He is pictured here with a 15-litre gold bottle of Armand De Brignac champagne, which cost an eye watering £17,500, although that’s less than a week’s wage for him, so we guess it didn’t hurt that much. He seemed more than happy to share his drinks with friends, hangers on and even the staff. We guess after carrying around such a massive bottle all day, Connor had worked up an appetite, so he headed down to Route 66 Marbella. He turned up without a top on (as you do), which goes against the restaurant’s policy so, bless him, he donned the American diner’s own t-shirt and had a great time posing for photos. ® Instagram

Yes, it’s another footie star - we seem to have been invaded by them this summer. England and Manchester United’s Luke Shaw really hit the Marbella party scene hard during his holiday here. We don’t think there was a single Marbs hot spot that he and his brother didn’t visit. Shaw, who was signed by Manchester United this year for £30m - a world record transfer fee for a teenager was spotted at News Café in Banús (he loved it so much he partied there twice) and was snapped in nightclub, Aqwa Mist and spent his days relaxing on the beach and eating at the American diner, Route 66 Marbella in the port. Not sure what Sir Alex would say about this if he was still in charge.
Eastenders actress Patsy Palmer enjoyed her time on our sunny shores so much that she tweeted “ I love my life” - bless her. Before attending the Global Gift Gala, she managed to catch some rays on the beach while tweeting,”Looking forward to supporting @ GlobalGiftGala @EvaLongoria tonight... First a little chill at the beach. Chow!!!’ The following day she joined Pixie Lott and her other half on a boat trip. We are all still baffled by this unlikely friendship. However the question on everyone’s lips is, “Where was RICKYYYYY!!”?

Star of Desperate Housewives, Eva Longoria flew over to host her annual charity event, the Global Gift Gala at Gran Melia Don Pepe. Not one to hide away from the crowds, she was spotted enjoying paella (apparently she couldn’t visit Marbella without sampling at least one), spoiling her mother with a spa day for her birthday, hitting the dance floor at Olivia Valere and strolling around the Old Town with her man, José Antonio Baston, who is a member of the Executive Committee of Grupo Televisa, Latin America’s largest media company. All this before the big night itself.

Amaury Nolasco Garrido, who is best known as Fernando Sucre from the Fox television series, Prison Break and for his role in Transformers showed Marbella how he likes to party. Then the next day he played golf at La Quinta, where he tweeted, “What an amazing time we had at the GlobalGiftGolf @LaQuintaGolf in Marbella. Anything 4 a good cause!” He even got up on stage and sang to Eva Longoria’s mum for her birthday. He finished off in style at the black tie Global Gift Gala.
British pop star, Pixie Lott decided to kill two birds with one stone by coming to Marbella. Firstly, she performed a good deed by attending the Global Gift Gala, secondly she brought her gorgeous model boyfriend, Oliver Cheshire, with her so they could celebrate their four-year anniversary together. The ever so stylish singer rocked

an array of stylish outfits during her trip, which included a designer shopping trip in Puerto Banús and a boat trip with Eastenders actress, Patsy Palmer (could be this years BFF). However, things started to get slightly messy when they hit Olivia Valere’s nightclub - we think one too many sangrias had been consumed by this point.
Academy Award nominated actor, Terrence Howard was also over to attend his good friend Eva Longoria’s charity event. English recording artist Mutya Buena, who rose to fame as a member of girl group the Sugarbabes took a Marbella detour on her way to Portugal. She managed to fit in Sintillate at Pangea, Sisu Boutique Hotel and News Café on her short vacation with us. So what did she think of it? We will let her tweet answer the question: “Last night out in Marbs.....sad times but good memories ....We sure had a blast!!!!”

THE BEAUTY BAROMETER
THE MAGIC OF
Makeup
Nicola McGeorge travelled to the United Makeup Artists’ Expo in London to bring you tips from Hollywood’s finest make-up artists and the must have products that they carry in their kits.
F
or a make-up junkie such as myself, the UMAe was like Christmas, birthdays and Easter all rolled into one. Not only was the place crammed wall-to-wall with the latest beauty products but it was heaving with talent - some of the biggest make artists in Hollywood had flown over to share their words of wisdom with us mere mortals. I had died and gone to heaven. I have to say that even those of you who are not interested in make-up would have found it hard not to be in awe of what was created over the two-day event. Within five minutes of being there I had been greeted by a female vampire, snarled at by a human-sized rat and had the life scared out of me by a gnarly old witch. Welcome to the world of special effects. You see, make-up isn’t just about what lipstick colour is in vogue. It is also about the monsters from your favourite horror movie or the superhero in the latest blockbuster. At the UMAe, talented artists were bringing to life creatures, aliens and probably your worst nightmares in front of your eyes. The whole experience was amazing, my only regret was that I didn’t clone myself, I needed two, or maybe three, of me as there was so much going
34
on. There were talks and demos from the likes of the award winning makeup artist Mike Smith, think Avatar, Terminator, Salvation, Planet of the Apes and Oscar-winning makeup artist Greg Cannom - Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Titanic and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I have to say the highlight was meeting Robin Mathews, whose work in Dallas Buyers Club bagged her an Oscar this year. She spent an unbelievable three hours with us, not only showing us how to create her award winning look, but answering all our questions; I asked her so many that, by the end of the session, she was worried she had a stalker on her hands. Now for the shopping; I went home with a serious dent in my pocket, if my other half hadn’t stopped me when he did, I would have had a nasty call from my bank manager when I got home - and don’t get me started on excess baggage. Here are some of my best buys: POINTED COTTON BUDS - a simple thing, but pointed cotton buds dipped in makeup remover are a girl’s best friend for creating feline flicks with eyeliner. www.screenface.co.uk
DERMACOLOR CAMOUFLAGE CREME – as this is an especially highly pigmented make-up designed to correct and cover skin disfigurements, discolourations and tattoos, I had never considered it for everyday use. However, after attending a talk with Sian Richards, who was the incredibly talented artist who turned Halle Berry white in Cloud Atlas using, yes you guessed it, Dermacolor, I completely changed my mind. She explained that she only carries three palettes in her kit, one of them being Dermacolor Camouflage Creme, which she uses for foundation, concealer, contouring and highlighting, blusher, bronzer and lipstick. Yes, I didn’t believe her either, until she started her demo. She created a flawless make-up using only this one product palette, selecting different tones for different needs. I was sold! The only problem was that by the time I made it
THE BEAUTY BAROMETER
to the stand, all the Dermacolor had sold out, all because of Sian’s demo. It tells you something though, doesn’t it? www.kryolan.com BIODERMA SENSIBIO H2O - loved by one of my favourite make-up artists, Lisa Elderidge, this the outstanding solution gently cleanses and removes makeup on sensitive skin. It cleans quickly, but is also extremely gentle, so doesn’t aggravate the skin. As you do not need water to remove it, it’s brilliant for busy girls on the move. www.gurumakeupemporium.com EMBRYOLISSE LAIT-CREME CONCENTREknown to make-up insiders as the “24 Hour Miracle”. When you need a furiously fast flaky face fixer-upper, Lait-Creme Concentre magically transforms scaly, dehydrated skin into a visibly softer, smoother complexion. It’s formulated to soothe and correct by mimicking and reinforcing the natural surface oils and waterproofing barrier of the skin, slowing down moisture evaporation. It’s also a make-up artist lifesaver for quickly correcting peeling, sunburned skin. www.love-makeup.co.uk LONDON BRUSH COMPANY – how much difference can a make-up brush make? A lot, is the answer, especially if you use the brushes from this company. Founded by celebrity make-up artist Sian Richards, this boutique’s collection of brushes actually had me mouthing “OMG!” when using them for the first time. The lip brush allows such precise application I didn’t need to use lip liner and the angled eye liner brush makes applying top liner a breeze. www.londonbrushcompany.com Beauty Blender Sponge – I have been very loyal to Body Shop’s make-up sponge for over 15 years now, so it needed to be something special to make me switch. Hello to my new BFF, the Beauty Blender Sponge. Unlike traditional sponges, the soft texture and elliptical shape of the Beauty Blender allows foundation to blend into skin with a natural finish and no streaks. When saturated with water, the sponge will expand to twice its size, making it easy to cover your whole face and still get into all the nooks and crannies. www.preciousaboutmakeup.com SKINDINAVIA MAKEUP FINISHING SPRAY – wow, did this product live up to its claims! It holds make-up flawlessly for 16 hours, keeping your look perfect all day and night. The hypo-allergenic spray can be applied in a micro-fine mist over makeup or directly onto a brush or sponge. First used on movie sets to hold makeup under hot lights and to minimize the need for touch-ups, they are still used in Hollywood and on Broadway stages. This great year-round mist keeps make-
up from melting in the summer and drying out ICKETS in winter. www.loveSHOW T XT N FOR E makeup.co.uk 2TH 11TH/1 Make Up For Ever Flash APRIL Palette – another multiBLE AVAILA tasker. Create an array of looks for eyes, cheeks, and lips with this luxe palette that’s perfect for on-the-go touch-ups. I’ve managed to do 98 per cent of my face using JUST the MUFE Flash Palette (the two per cent is the gloss I used on my lips and a touch of mascara). Yes, that’s right, you can even create your own foundation with this baby. I mixed brown, white, yellow, red and peach to create my own foundation to match my skin tone. www.preciousaboutmakeup.com For more information on the UMAe go to www.umae.co.uk

A View Into a
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
Patient’s Journey Gemma Wood, is the Head of Counselling & Psychotherapy at the Medical and Psychological clinic, Cortijo Care, based in San Pedro.
When Claire first arrived at our clinic she appeared a broken hearted young lady with many difficulties; our team at Cortijo Care reviewed her past psychiatric history to gain an idea of what individual treatment we needed to offer. Within her first few weeks here Claire’s internal suffering became clearer, allowing us to offer a more specific and realistic plan and institute goals for her recovery. Claire’s diagnosis is complex, as she displays symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, Anxiety and Bulimia Nervosa. With the support of the team and our leading psychiatrist, who spent many individual assessment sessions with Claire, it became clear that she also suffers with ADHD. The strength, commitment and willingness of Claire to trust us and believe we could help, was the start of her journey. Claire’s diary entry for this month has been focused on her bulimia, due to it being a major part of learning new tools whilst reintegrating into society. The integration from inpatient therapy to home life I believe to be the hardest part of regaining full recovery, yet I truly believe it is possible.
I’m sitting up in bed watching TV in a lovely room. A normal thing to do, but the difference is I’m not in my own bed and this is not my TV; I’m in my private room at Cortijo Care. A nurse sits in a chair nearby. I’m being supervised after eating my evening meal to ensure that I do what other people do and digest my food. Before I came here I battled every day with everything I ate. I have an eating disorder called Bulimia Nervosa. As a 34 year-old woman, I feel a sense of indignity about being supervised during and after eating, but I know in my heart that if that kindly nurse wasn’t there, I’d be inclined to purge. This horrible illness makes you believe that by secretly binging on food and vomiting, or using laxatives, you gain a sense of control; it tells you that this behaviour will be the antidote to the chaos that your life has seemingly become. It lies and it can be fatal. Depression and anxiety can be fatal too; I have to acknowledge I’m also supervised because I present a high suicide risk. I have started a programme of residential care that I pray will help me get my life back. Suffering with this disorder, depression and acute anxiety
climaxed in what you could call a breakdown. The team here say they can help and even though I’ve only be here for a few days, I believe that they can. Here, I have a menu plan that allows me to have manageable portions of food that are both delicious and verified by a nutritionist to make sure I’m getting what my body needs. There are other clients here with whom I’ve started to have group therapy. Some are addicts, others are fighting depression or overcoming a trauma. Talking with strangers about your fears, painful events and their bitter consequences initially feels unnatural, but there is something liberating about it; the sessions are skilfully led by members of the therapy team and I don’t feel so alone anymore. Finally, I’m starting to find a voice.
Courage is not about having the strength to go on, it’s about going on when you don’t have the strength. Follow Claire’s next stage of her inpatient treatment next month.

Zoe Woods, Director of Wood Salon, shares her summer hair solutions for fighting everything from frizz to fading.
W
e slather our skin with sunscreen, we scour the aisles at Sephora for tinted moisturizer with SPF and we spend an excessive amount of dinero on lotions and potions that are meant to protect us from the sun. But the rays don’t only damage skin - our locks also suffer. Between the natural elements and chlorine, summer can take its toll on your mane, but with a few simple steps you can summer-proof your locks. DO BLONDES REALLY HAVE MORE FUN? “You blondies suffer terribly during the summer,” laughs Zoe. “Anyone with colour-treated hair will experience fading once their hair is exposed to the sun, but with blondes the sun doesn’t just kiss their hair – depending on your shade it can turn yellow, orange tinged or a nuclearexplosion white. This is why I was so keen to get Redken’s new Blonde Idol range into the salon for the summer. Blonde Glam was a great product, but it was only one product trying to cover every kind of blonde out there. The starting point for the whole new line is that every shade of blonde finds its base in one of two colour tones: a golden, warm blonde or a violet, cool blond. So Redken has been doing its homework and has created a brand new dual-product that targets both kinds of blondes.” “To give each type of blonde the very best customizable hair-care, Redken came out with a unique product line that offers amazing benefits for blondes,” Zoe explains. “I’ll start with my favourite product of all; the colour-depositing conditioner that lets you deposit the perfect amount of colour in between salon visits. Seriously, the bottle itself lets you dial-up or dial-down the colour so you can maintain or adjust your shade appropriately before your next salon appointment. The violet-based conditioner helps neutralize brassiness, and the gold-based conditioner helps maintain warmth. I am also loving the Blonde Idol BBB Spray, a lightweight, leave-in or rinseout multi-benefit conditioning spray. It’s the first first BBB hair treatment that balances, beautifies and brightens blondes.”
NO BRASSINESS
Guaranteed
FIGHTING THE FRIZZ Moisture in the air makes hair prone to frizzing. Even if your locks aren’t normally vulnerable, any damage - whether from the sun or from colouring - roughens the cuticles, enabling water molecules in humid air to penetrate the hair shaft, causing it to swell. So unless you can rock the Diana Ross look, you may want to think about bringing in the professionals. Countless women’s lives have been completely transformed by the revolutionary Brazilian Permanent Blow Dry, especially in countries with hot climates such as Spain. Not only does it banish the frizz, but hair also becomes resistant to humidity.
“The treatment leaves you with more manageable, softer and straighter hair,” explains Zoe. “In fact, it has been known to save women up to three hours a week in styling time.” L’Jerabelle Xtra is 100 per cent free from any nasties such as formaldehyde, aldehyde and urea. This trusted brand is the ONLY one that Woods Hairdressing Salon will use. It’s not only formaldehyde-free, but the keratinbased formula is kind even to damaged hair, temporarily sealing split ends. WHERE’S THE LOVE? “The best way to retain your locks is to treat them with love,” advises Zoe. “I highly recommend that you feed and nourish your hair by scheduling in-salon deep conditioning treatments, as they are much more powerful than anything that can be done at home. At Wood Salon we cater for all budgets, treating each client as an individual and prescribe a treatment that is suited to their hair’s specific needs.” One of the most popular treatments is the Colour Extend. Built on a string foundation of protein and moisture, this treatment is enriched with UVA and UVB filters and a ceramide conditioning formula to leave hair feeling protected.
Enjoy the rest of the summer Love from Zoe and the team at Wood Salon xx

Aston Martin Racing team owner and part-time Marbella resident Jan Struve led his team to victory in the rigorous, endurance testing 24 hour Le Mans race. Last month he spoke exclusively to SOCIETY Marbella.
82
Firstly, congratulations on your recent win at Le Mans! How did it feel to stand on that podium in first place? It was the greatest achievement for the three drivers who make up the team and for me. Le Mans is a tough, tough race – if not the toughest race of all, which made the taste of victory even sweeter. What makes 24 hours of the Le Mans such a challenging race? Le Mans is hard, long and most certainly not for the faint hearted, which is why I am so fascinated by it. The racing team has to balance speed with the car’s ability to run for 24 hours solid, through day and night. The endurance of the drivers is likewise tested, as drivers frequently stay behind the wheel for three hours at a time before handing duties over to the next man in the team during a pit stop. Many say it is more difficult to win Le Mans than the World Championship.
Did you expect to finish in first place? Winning was always the goal. It was the same last year but tragically one of our drivers died on the track. So this year, we attacked the course with him in mind, we won it for him. Who made up the Young Driver AMR team? Being Danish, I thought is could be fun to have an all Danish team to help put Denmark on the map. So the line up included Kristian Poulsen, Nicki Thiim and David Heinemeier Hansson. In the PRO/AM category in which we participate, we have to use a mixture of three driver categories, gold, silver and bronze classes. There is also a great age range in the team with the oldest driver being 39 years of age and the youngest just 23.
83
Aside from the drivers, who else makes up the team? In the total team for all four cars, there is about 90 of us including the chief engineer, data engineer and mechanical engineer. Everyone has a role to play and continuously watches the data to help plan the next course of action. Did you have a particular strategy for the race? Yes, we plan our strategy right from the very beginning. We put our fastest driver out first to create a distance from the other cars. At the start of this race, we were third so we waited until we were in the lead before we planned the next stage. Obviously the strategy can completely change if the weather, or other external factors, alter.
84
85
86
How many times do you change the driver throughout the race?
So does the driver tell you when he is feeling too tired to continue?
That very much depends on the fitness of the driver. Normally, we work in three stints. Each stint lasts about 50 minutes so the driver is subjected to three hours of total concentration. A driver should never be in the car longer than four hours because of the heat and the physical and mental stamina required to complete each lap of the course.
No, we discuss this beforehand. All the drivers are ready at any moment but obviously when you’ve been racing for eight hours, it is important to relax. The drivers did three stints until we were in the front, then we changed to two stints so the drivers didn’t get too tired, as that can be catastrophic.
How many pit stops do you take? Well, the more pit stops you have, the less likely it is you are going to win! They are, however, absolutely necessary to re-fuel and change the tyres on the vehicle. A pit stop on average lasts 20 seconds for tyre change and only two people are allowed to work with the tyres on each car. One man grabs the wheel whilst the other attaches the new one. You are strictly forbidden to throw the wheels on, they have to be placed on the vehicle and each car is watched over by a marshal so there is no chance to shortcut the system. You are also not allowed to fuel at the same time as you change tires, so this is an additional 10 seconds, give or take.

How long do the tyres last? The tyres on some cars only last two stints, but with the Aston we can run three stints on the tyres. As they start to wear down at the end, the car won’t drive as fast but if you’re losing only half a second per lap, you have still earned seven or eight seconds having saved one tyre change. Describe the average day at Le Mans. It is a crazy week! You go to bed at 3a.m. and are up at 7a.m. the next morning. For a whole week, you get about three to four hours of sleep a night. Everyone is friendly; in the end you are all in it together.
88
What do the next few months hold for you and the team? Le Mans is only one race of the eight races in the series. We have five left in Austin, Fuji, Shanghai, Sao Paulo and Bahrain. However Le Mans is the most difficult of all and because it is so tough, you get double points in that race. Our win has therefore put us in a great position for the coming months.
We would like to thank Jan for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk to the SOCIETY Marbella team about the recent win at Le Mans and wish him and his team every success for the rest of the season.

David Bentley ON TAKING AN
EARLY BATH by India Baltran
T
he football world was surprised by Marbella resident David Bentley’s recent announcement that he was to retire at the age of 29 due to a growing disillusionment with the game. SOCIETY Marbella caught up with the man Beckham dubbed a worthy successor to find out what lay behind this surprising decision. Born on the 27th of August 1984 in Peterborough, Bentley started his career at Wormley Football Club in Hertfordshire where he showed early promise as a striker and in 2002 made the transfer to Arsenal, where he had also trained with the senior squad when he was a 16 year-old hopeful. Evidently Arsene (“Le Professeur”) Wenger decided that the new boy needed to take some time to settle in, because it was not until a 2003 FA Cup game against Oxford United, who were languishing in what was then known as the Fourth Division that Bentley took to the pitch for the Gunners; in this case, as a 77th minute substitution for Kolo Touré. While his talent was obvious from the very early days, Bentley had to wait until January 2004 to score his first goal during an FA Cup fixture against Middlesborough, which Arsenal won 4-1. Bentley was in many ways fortunate that it was Wenger who was the first manager of any importance to appreciate the undeniable spark of genius in the Cambridgeshire boy. However, despite his obvious skill the young player had found himself in a team packed with prodigious talent. As a result he soon found himself on loan, firstly to Norwich City and then to Blackburn Rovers, where he was officially signed in 2006, celebrating by
90
scoring a hat-trick against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Bentley finished his career with Tottenham Hotspur, where he was signed in 2008 (a move that naturally proved unpopular with Arsenal’s fanatical army of Gooners), but within three years he found himself out to loan again. First up was Birmingham City, then West Ham, after which Bentley earned the considerable distinction of becoming the first Englishman to play in the Russian Premier League with FC Rostov. Bentley moved back to the UK to play for Blackburn Rovers while still on loan from Spurs; it was announced on June the 7th 2013 that he had been ‘released’ by the latter club. After taking some much needed time out from the sport, Bentley announced that he was no longer looking for a new footballing post, preferring to spend time in his adopted city of Marbella with his partner and three children. Bentley is not yet 30 years old. How can the man that the then England coach Steve McClaren dubbed “the new David Beckham” (an opinion that was endorsed by Goldenballs himself) be giving it all up at such a young age? The football writing fraternity was happy to have another Robbie Savage style ‘character’ on which to sharpen its pens. Despite his undoubted talent, Bentley quickly proved himself something of a stormy petrel who was, nonetheless, loved by journalists for his quotable, offthe-cuff remarks. On the pitch he was poetry in motion; off the pitch he quickly established a name as a man who favoured the truth over diplomacy.
Despite promising performances with the England under-15 and under-16 teams, captaining the under-18s and recording eight caps and four goals with the under21s, Bentley’s time as an international player was short-lived and, after making his debut in a friendly against Switzerland in February 2008, he failed to fulfil Steve McClaren’s prediction and, instead of gaining a reputation to rival that of Beckham, Lampard or Gerrard, faded from the national side. So what went wrong? According to Bentley, it was nothing more dramatic than falling out of love with football: “The game has changed a lot - when I first started playing it was more about enjoying it, you went into work every day and it was brilliant. Now it’s a little bit robotic - with the social media side of it and the money that has come into the game - I hate to say it but it’s made it boring, it’s made it predictable and a bit too calculated. To sign on for another four or five years into that isn’t really an option for me.”
“The game has changed a lot - when I first started playing it was more about enjoying it, you went into work every day and it was brilliant. Now it’s a little bit robotic...”
It would make a good story to report that Bentley seems crestfallen by the end of a professional footballing career which could have lasted for another five or six years at least, but he seems thoroughly happy with his lot and totally unrepentant. Admitting that he had completely lost interest in the current ‘corporate’ football world, he is looking forward to spending more time in Marbella, organising his time to suit his partner Kim, their daughter and new-born twins. “I must have fallen out with every manager that I worked with!” he confesses with a grin that could be more accurately described as cheerful rather than rueful. “The point is that, when you’ve been doing anything long enough it can start to feel like a chore and I had been playing football for the whole of my adult life. Suddenly I realised that I don’t have to do it anymore and it felt like freedom.” Obviously those years spent playing in the big bucks Premier League means that you won’t be seeing Bentley busking for small change in the Casco Antiguo anytime soon. A major stakeholder in the wildly successful La Sala Group (which is currently in the process of opening its first UK venue in Essex), he has more then enough to keep him as busy as he would like to be and, judging by the number of Premiership stars that seem to view La Sala as a second home, he will still be seeing plenty of his former colleagues. That’s not to say that he will be envying them; he speaks, more in sorrow than in anger, about the state of the modern game, claiming that these days there is
virtually no room for the mouthy maverick – his idols are Cantona, Gascoigne and Scholes – and far too much control is exerted over players, which takes its toll on the pitch. Given his strong dislike of this intrusive style of micro-management, his less than judicious remarks within earshot of the tabloid press seem much less like youthful arrogance and more like deeprooted frustration. On meeting Bentley it soon becomes clear that he would prefer to rub a few people up the wrong way than to be considered boring or – perish the thought – predictable. Few were surprised when he was omitted from Fabio Capello’s final England squad, his progress as a fancied international player losing ground to the likes of Theo Walcott and Shaun WrightPhillips. Bentley’s free-form style was never going to win points with Capello’s tightreined management style. As the England team’s fan-base still reels from the trouncing it received in Brazil, he predicts that supporters can expect more of the same if there is not some kind
of football reformation aimed at freeing up players and allowing them to express themselves on the pitch. “We have some of the best young players in the world still,” he says. “I look at, for instance, the Brazilian and Argentinian teams and it’s not that they have a new breed of super-player or anything, it’s just that they have a set-up which encourages players to go out with confidence and have a go. With the England squad now it’s all about restriction and stress.” Now that he has given up professional football Bentley, who famously advocated playing with a smile, seems at peace with himself. From now on fans will have to content themselves with watching him chase a golf ball around and that’s the way that he likes it. When the 2014-2015 season starts the Premiership will have to get on with it without Bentley. Somehow it’s difficult to imagine that he will spend too much time crying about being the wrong side of English football’s gilded cage.

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the McLaren 650S

TORQUE TALK
W
hen McLaren announced the 650S at this year’s Geneva Show, the official line was that this was to be an additional model sitting above the 12C. But when you looked closer, it very clear that the 650S was the car to finally realise the promise of the original MP4-12C. Certainly when I saw the 650S at Geneva, I had a sneaking suspicion that it was a toe-in-the-water exercise to judge customer reaction, and therefore that the three-year-old 12C was possibly not long for this world. After all, if you can afford a 12C, the jump to the 650S is not a big deal, and who would not want a car that takes its design cues from the mighty P1? Now, barely two weeks after I drove the 650S at the Ascari Race Resort near Ronda, Spain, McLaren told us that due to the overwhelming influx of orders for the 650S Coupe and Spider, they are suspending 12C production indefinitely. The McLaren 12C is dead, long live the 650S! In a nutshell, the 650S is the answer to customer requests for a car with more power and torque, and sharper styling. For those who think the 12C lacks visual gravitas by being a bit too generic looking, the 650S is the magic bullet.
Taking its styling cues from the P1 in the nose area, the new car looks spectacular, modern and distinctively McLaren. “Around 50-percent of the part numbers are different,” said Chris Staunton, Engineering Manager for body panels and closure. The new body panels including the bonnet, front wings, side air intakes, rear

wings and doors (modified). The 650S benefits enormously from the halo effect created by the P1, and this instantly recognisable family resemblance is no bad thing. However, not one line of a McLaren car is there just for styling’s sake. McLaren boss, Ron Dennis, and chief designer, Frank Stephenson, would never countenance something that did not also have a technical justification. This is particularly critical in this case as the 650S was designed to be more sporting and more focused in its character than the 12C. The 18-month gestation period led to the new front with P1-style LED headlamps, longer air splitters and larger low temperature intakes, better airflow management around the wheels, the blades at the bottoms of the doors, and software that uses the rear wing/airbrake in a different way. These aerodynamic changes conspire to increase downforce by a significant 40-percent. Meanwhile the greater airflow needs of the uprated motor account for the wider high temperature intakes along the cars flanks. In 650S form, the motor has been uprated to produce 650 PS, or 641 bhp at 7,250rpm, with 678 Nm of torque at 6,000rpm. Don’t be fooled by the high engine speed where peak torque is produced since 95-percent is available between 3,000 and 7,000rpm While an extra 25 PS and 78 Nm of torque do not seem like a big step up for a turbocharged motor, the extra output was not gained through simply raising the boost pressure. The mechanical changes include new pistons, cylinder

and Ferrari 458 Speciale against the stopwatch, beating both to 200km/h with a spectacular time of 8.4 sec.
for fast and practical cars, and with that, the expectations of new members to the supercar fold.
Tipping the scales at just 1,330kg dry, (1,370kg Spider), the Coupe weighs 104 kg less than the 12C, which delivers the spectacular power-to-weight ratio of 500PS/ton or 493bhp/ton.
However, more than just consummately playing the numbers game, McLaren has also carefully honed the car and driver interface to make the 650S more communicative, addressing one area where the press and some owners felt the 12C gave best to its Italian rivals.
Most of the people who buy supercars today therefore expect a fair degree of civility and convenience from their purchases, and would find raw and visceral 1970s machines like the Ferrari Daytona or Lamborghini Muira a bit too much of a good thing. The rest would of course revel in their closer contact with the road.
This makes for very impressive performance, with the 0-100km/h sprint covered in 3.0 sec dead, 200km/h coming up in 8.4 sec, and 300km/h in 25.4 sec. Top speed is 333km/h, or 207 mph. The spring rates have been increased by 22 and 37-percent front and rear respectively, and the accumulators of the ProActive Chassis have been shifted to the top of the suspension units, where the shorter fluid path provides better response. In conjunction with this, the suspension control software has also been optimised for improved individual wheel support, and thus traction. The standard fit carbon ceramic brakes are McLaren’s next generation design, and a lot of work was done to optimise brake pedal feel and modulation. With its uprated engine, chassis and revised aerodynamics, the 650S goes harder than the Lamborghini Aventador
In fact, this whole feedback thing has become a big area of debate amongst enthusiasts. While the traditional camp bemoans the fact that modern cars in general isolate their drivers too much from the proceedings, others argue that our crowded roads and lower speed limits require driver stress levels to be managed and mitigated to some extent by cars with better ride comfort and lower noise levels. It is a fact that a street legal racecar ends up being a tiresome beast if you have to use it as a daily driver rather than just for an inspirational Sunday morning blast. Vastly improved standards of NVH and other refinements have moved the supercar game in a different direction. Super saloons like the Audi RS6, BMW M5 and E63 AMG have rewritten the rules
What the McLaren 650S does extremely well is strike a perfect balance between what today’s average supercar customers expect, and what the experienced hard-core enthusiast is used to. It was raining at the Ascari racetrack where the 650S launch event was based. Having come up from the coast where it was also raining, I headed further inland in search of drier roads. Cantering along with all systems set in Normal mode, my first impressions were of an uncommonly comfortable ride for this type of car, with perfect bounce and rebound control underpinning the 650S’s credentials as a daily driver.
95
TORQUE TALK For the first few kilometres, the sodden roads made exploiting the performance a frustrating affair, as moving into the throttle firmly, even in third gear just lit up the fat rear Pirellis. Less than 20km on, the roads were bone dry and at last I could deploy all 650 horses to good effect. The first thing you notice is how smooth and progressive the power delivery is under the full acceleration that fires you down the road towards the horizon. Unlike with some turbocharged machines that deliver a second wind at some point, there is no spike in the power band of McLaren’s M838T 3.8 litre twinturbo flat plane crank V8, just strong and creamy smooth thrust. In the slightly modified cabin with its optional carbon package, in the periphery of your vision is the rev counter needle flashing round the dial towards the 8,500rpm cut-out, as you prepare to grab the next ratio with the right hand paddle shifter. The revised motor makes all the right inspirational noises when you open the taps fully. The throaty intake roar and deeper bass of the exhaust conspire with the twin turbochargers to stir up a soundtrack behind your head that
96
becomes increasingly exotic with rising crankshaft speeds. The potent torque curve means that you don’t actually need a lot of revs to move down the road rapidly in normal driving. But once you have the open road in front of you and minimal traffic, it is hard to resist the urge to simply go for broke. Drop the hammer and the deep growl morphs into a flat plane crank V8 howl as the rev counter need passes the 4,000rpm mark, turning into a racecarlike scream as it homes in on 7,000rpm and beyond. I notice that McLaren has improved the action of the steering wheel paddle shifters. Unlike the earlier cars, the required input is now more intuitive and matches the other control weights. Smoothness of operation is important as well, and you will find this honed to perfection here.
TORQUE TALK
With the driven wheels now able to fully key into the grippy tarmac, I am really beginning to enjoy myself. I can feel the cars active chassis coming alive as it holds the car flat and unerringly poised in a long sweeping corner. I can also feel the aero working in conjunction with the chassis, gently pressing the car towards the tarmac. This positive feedback through the seat of my pants encourages me to gently feed in the power once past the apex as I straighten up towards the exit. That e-gas throttle is so well calibrated that you really feel you can meter in the exact number of horses required as you unwind the steering, and this is something I will revisit in the track impressions. I come up behind a line of three cars and position myself to overtake after a bend. Moving to the left for optimum visibility, I see that the road is clear and with one squeeze on the throttle they are consigned to the rear view mirror. Safe point-to-point progress has never been easier. The counterpoint is a car that will trickle through towns and villages at or below 50km/h in third gear on a light throttle with perfect comfort from suspension and drivetrain, and be ready to fly again the moment you hit the derestrict sign. My test car had the optional carbonfibre sports seats covered in Alcantara, which save 15kg. These deep, figurehugging seats cost £5,000 in the UK and are positioned slightly lower in the car than the standard leather clad seats. Admittedly, these seats are not for everyone, but as being held tightly in fast cornering is less stressful on the back muscles, and I prefer sitting low in a car anyway, they would be
97

The 650S is the answer to customer requests for a car with more power and torque, and sharper styling.
my personal default choice. Their Alcantara covering is also cooler in summer and warmer in winter. An adjunct to this is the new option of an electrically adjustable steering column, either as a stand-alone item or as part of the Comfort package that retracts the wheel towards the dashboard, and motors the electric seats aft to help you get in and out. By the time I got back to Ascari from my road drive, the rain had stopped and the wind had dried substantial swathes of the 5.4 km long circuit. As Ascari is my home circuit, I could concentrate on the car, and set about lapping with the ProActive Chassis Control and Powertrain systems in Normal mode to establish the base line. As I warmed up the McLaren specific (MC1) Pirellis, the increased transparency of the uprated chassis was very apparent. The new front tyres feature a squarer shoulder profile to reduce slip angle and maximise the tread contact patch when cornering. In conjunction with the new top mounts, which also help the ride quality, turn-in and steering feel are improved.
98
While the colour of the tarmac made the track appear to be dry, the track surface was still slightly damp in places, and as each lap unfolded, I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to discern the difference between the bone dry and damp on the way into each corner.
I normally trail brake into bends on track, and the excellent steering and chassis feedback allowed me to either hold the car in perfectly neutral balance through each bend or exit with a whiff of oversteer. Beyond the limit, the torque vectoring system comes into play.
That information then helped my own ‘computer’ to judge exactly how much steering and throttle to meter in to hold the cars attitude through the bend, or indeed intuitively alter it by an appropriate amount.
The mechanical grip from the new 235/35R19 and 305/30R20 asymmetric tread Pirelli PZero Corsa tyres sitting on 8.5J x 19 and 11.0J x 20-inch forged alloys is most impressive, and I would have preferred the sports seats in the car
TORQUE TALK I took on the road rather than the normal leather seats in the car I drove on track. Doing the next laps in Sport mode with the throttle, gearbox and active suspension ramped up to the next level was a revelation. Everything became more focused, and the instant blast of raw acceleration down the straight bits was very intoxicating. In track mode, the engine and gearbox settings are unchanged over Sport mode, but the chassis goes to its highest alert level, reducing roll in the bends even more. The good thing about the McLaren system is that the Handling and Powertrain settings can be accessed separately. Thus, if you are on track in wet weather, you can have the latter in Track mode, with the Handling in Sport
mode, its slightly softer suspension settings potentially providing better traction on a slippery surface. In the dry on the other hand, the Track setting keeps the tyre slip angle to a minimum, allowing you to maximise the wide and grippy Pirelli PZero Corsa trackday rubber. Far more than just a McLaren 12C with the volume turned up to 11, the 650S is the car that hard-core enthusiasts wished the 12C had been from the outset. That also makes it is the most complete sub-£300,000 mid-engined supercar money can buy right now, which is exactly what McLaren set out to achieve in the first place. Local dealer is Guarnieri.

hen initially walking around the property, it was clear why our clients had chosen this villa quickly and without hesitation. The views are spectacular and the plot itself is idyllic, both in position and orientation. The property itself was a good size and the potential it had, even as an empty, tired-looking home, was immediately apparent. After an initial meeting it was obvious that we would need to amend the distribution of some of the rooms in the residence to cater for a family’s requirements. The interior would require the biggest changes as it was clear that the combination of salmon pink marble floors and green and gold wrought iron staircase was not the effect the new owners were looking for. We had to view this property as a shell that needed to be transformed into a modern, contemporary and practical home so, after initial new distributions and layouts were drawn

Although the new spec for the home was ‘clean cut and contemporary’, the client was keen for the villa still to feel cosy and comfortable and to ensure it didn’t feel clinical or cold. This is a common requirement and easily achieved by following a number of guidelines. Light and fresh colours work well on the Costa, particularly given the amount of natural light with which we are blessed and, combined with a tight link between the interior and exterior space, light colours offer a feeling of openness and space. There is an even more practical element to using the lighter end of the colour spectrum; although our beautiful Mediterranean sun is a major attraction, its strength also tends to bleach strong primary colours and fabrics are prone to fading quickly over a summer season. Using more

natural, muted shades throughout the social areas of the house opened up the property and allowed us to use colourful accents in accessories, scatter cushions and particularly walls or recesses that we wanted to emphasise. depth in the design and prevent rooms from feeling too flat or square. By using a light American walnut with an ever so slightly pink tone for the doors, skirting and stair treads broke up the now light expanse of the villa and added the necessary warmth and richness needed to stop the property becoming overly minimal and modern.

As an interior design team, we do tend to have a signature style and we are inclined to avoid any themes in rooms or dominating features that may date quickly or be appealing only to certain age groups. Lighter tones for this home were key but we couldn’t ignore the fact that this property was to be the home for four children and therefore striking the balance between design and practicality was essential. Although the ages of the children are vital when planning the living space and design of their rooms, it is also important to realise how much children grow and quickly change. The home we were creating is to be a part of their lives for years to come, so longevity of design is crucial. This is where it becomes important to keep the design of the rooms young and fun but ensure that the major, permanent features of the rooms are not age specific. We used 135cm beds instead of singles to allow for those unavoidable growth spurts and guarantee maximum use. Funky wallpapers and colourful cushions worked well; cushions can always be exchanged and added or removed as the children’s tastes change. An area where they could have their own space was crucial, so we converted a large open-plan room in the basement level of the house into a games and media room, fully equipped with a convertible ping-pong and pool table, a 70-inch flat-screen TV fully equipped with games consoles and a full movie
110
library. This room is characterised by colour - and lots of it - to appeal to both the sons and daughters of the family. One lime green wall behind the pool table, decorated with oversized comic prints keeps the room feeling fresh and young and the glittery purple wallpaper running the length of the room again helps to create a funky mood. Beanbag armchairs and tinted glass lights over the pool table in pop colours complete the design of the room and although fun and young, it is clear that any age group will enjoy this particular additional living area.
Despite displaying unique features the rooms flow, thanks to a strong link which is primarily led by the use of the same flooring throughout all the major rooms, so as not to divide or compartmentalise the individual spaces. There is still a slight hierarchy to the property, as the master bedroom sits on the upper floor overlooking the pool area with uninterrupted views over the Mediterranean and on to Africa. The room is spacious and open and the use of a strongly contrasting dark tile cladding on the chimney breast was necessary in such a large,

open room. To break up the structure, we created a recess for a biofuel, ribbon fireplace staggered under the recessed flat-screen TV and further alcoved, lit shelving was cut in so the residents could add accessories and knick knacks. The en-suite bathroom matches the elegance and luxury of this property, with a free-standing raised bath-tub sitting in a bay created to maximise the view and, just in case you tire of this, a flush fitted, fully waterproof television was installed at the foot of the tub. The walk in rainshower with fully integrated seat and body jets means that this bathrooms caters for all preferences. The kitchen is a social and friendly space, as we often find that kitchens are divided from the major interactive parts of the home. We wanted to allow the space from kitchen to dining area to alfresco bar to flow without interruption. We raised the floor in the dining space so everything now runs on the same level. The side access allows prep work to be done in the kitchen and moved out to the BBQ or bar area that sits on the raised section of the decking and a special area for wines and cocktails clearly demonstrates that this house is to be a fun-filled home full of entertainment

THE HISTORY OF QROPS PENSIONS In 2006, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), under pressure from the European Union, would for the first time allow non-UK residents to take their UK pensions overseas without imposing a tax charge. It seems inconceivable that HMRC would allow a UK based pension to be fully transferred without imposing a tax charge, but that is exactly what QROPS are designed for and as an expat you are well within your rights to take advantage. Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS) have been around since 2006, although approved offshore investments have been around for longer than that. UK Pensions are no longer restricted by layers upon layers of regulation. There is also no longer a requirement to purchase an annuity, a vehicle which until recently was compulsory to ensure that pensioners did not spend all of their pension pot within the first 10 years of retirement and then have to rely upon the state in order to survive. Annuities also ensured that HMRC were guaranteed a sizable tax amount on any income provided as well as a tax of up to 55% on any remaining funds upon death. HRMC will now permit members of UK pension schemes to transfer their pension assets into a limited number of overseas schemes that have been “recognised” by HMRC. However just because a scheme has been added to the recognised list, does not mean that the UK government in turn guarantee that scheme. There are a mixture of high to low risk arrangements available and the fact that they have made it onto the recognized list does not negate the need for independent advice from a financial advisor and as ever, your own due diligence.
BUDGET 2014 The 2014 budget contained immediate changes and proposed measures which will affect pension products for both UK and Non-UK residents. One such measure is the decision to rescind the ‘Personal Allowance’ relief for expatriates drawing their pension from the UK, meaning that every pound you take from your pension will now be taxed. The pending consultation period up until May 2015 may also result in a review of the Double Taxation Agreement’s (DTA) with other countries, especially in the case of clients taking 100% of a personal or defined contribution pension. Although the potential to take 100% may seem attractive, a tax bracket of 40-50% would most probably apply. One other major amendment under review is to restrict transfers from Public Sector Defined Benefit schemes such as NHS or education. These restrictions may be implemented as soon as Q4 this year. If you are a member of such schemes and thinking of switching out, then time is of the essence!
How does a QROPS actually work? For the first ten years after the pension transfer, HMRC will receive a report of what happens with the scheme. So they learn whether you make any withdrawals or further deposits, and they get to know if you transfer your fund again into a different scheme. After those ten years have elapsed, HMRC no longer have an interest in the scheme and your pension scheme becomes confidential. However, there will

Tax on Pension Income still be a tax liability in your country of residence and or your QROPS host country, if different. HMRC however reserve the right to make enquiries at any time in relation to transferred UK tax relieved pension funds.
What does a QROPS look like? QROPS come in a wide variety. With many different QROPS schemes readily available, you are spoiled for choice with access to over a thousand different schemes. A larger variety of underlying assets are also available, as are a diverse range of tax treatments and withdrawal permissions.
Transfers QROPS providers can accept transfers from UK registered pension schemes and international pension schemes. A transfer from any jurisdiction other than the UK is not governed by the UK QROPS Provisions. Before making a transfer we strongly recommend that members take
specific financial advice to ensure that the QROPS and associated charges are suitable.
Retirement Age The minimum retirement age can be as low as age 50 with a maximum retirement age of 75. Lump sum Members will normally be permitted to take a pension commencement lump sum (PCLS) from the QROPS. If a member has completed five full complete and consecutive UK tax years overseas and is non-UK tax resident at the time of taking benefits then they will normally be able to take up to 30% of the fund value at retirement as a Pension Commencement Lump Sum (‘PCLS’) If a member has not completed five full complete and consecutive UK tax years overseas or is UK tax resident at the time of taking benefits then their PCLS will be restricted to 25% of the fund.
Pension income paid is subject to tax in the jurisdiction from where the scheme is located. A QROPS scheme may however be taxed at a minimal or even zero rate. Some jurisdictions have Double Taxation Agreements, which can help to mitigate double tax on income in a member’s country of residence. These DTAs go a long way to deciding which scheme is most relevant for an individual. Certain providers have schemes in all approved jurisdictions enabling the member to switch scheme free of charge should their country of residence change, ensuring maximum flexibility and minimum cost.
Tax on death benefits For non-UK tax residents, a QROPS is not subject to tax on lump sum death benefits paid before the member has taken benefits from the scheme. In many cases lump sum death benefits paid after the member has taken benefits will also be free of tax at source. However, members should take advice as to whether this lump sum would be taxable in their beneficiary(s) country of residence.

A TRUE TASTE OF

here are not many people I know who would drive five hours for a good meal these days. In fact, there is really only one person in my address book who I could count on for this level of devotion. A friend called George. Over a plate of exquisite seafood enjoyed during a trip to the Algarve a few weeks ago, I asked him what he considers to be the king of cuisines. Without a breath of hesitation, “Italian” he smiled. “In fact, the best Italian meal I have ever experienced was on a 48-hour trip to Tokyo a few months ago”. This statement might come as a surprise from a man who has spent much of his life travelling around Italy in the pursuit of gastronomic discoveries. Be it roast and grilled meat in Tuscany, tangy pasta dishes in Campania, or mountains of fresh fish from Pulgia, he’s had just about all of it. That Japan has mastered the art of la cucina italiana pays homage to the weight that the Italian cuisine carries, there are few nations that turn their nose up to a good plate of pasta. Being the world’s favourite food (according to a global survey

Sadly however, many cook pasta to the point to which it could be passed as polenta, and talk about the term al dente far more than they practice it. Very few channel the finesse of their homeland cuisine. Amongst the few that merit exception is Bucintoro Caffe. Bucintoro, named after the state galley of the duke of Venice, marks a slick and wellthought-through attempt to get the hearty simplicity of good Italian cuisine to work in an archetypal Sotogrande setting.
fight. As for the truffle: faultless. Restaurant owner Maribel explained that her husband makes regular trips to truffle auctions in Italy to purchase seasonal truffles, we were enjoying a top summer variety. Educational and delicious. The tagliatelle maintained just the right degree of bite, notoriously hard to achieve when cooking with fresh pasta, top marks. The highlight of the risotto were the octopus tentacles, it is a rarity to find them cooked properly along this coast however they were delightfully tender and excellently complimented by a pang of white wine that was infused in the rice. I would go as far as to say these merit a visit on their own accord. The arguably clichéd use of Pavarotti as background music was starting to seem more rightful than ridiculous at this stage, for to play a master must be accompanied by masterful cuisine. Which Bucintoro was proving to provide.
Owned by a pair of Italians who refuse to serve anything that is inauthentic (they regularly journey home to source ingredients) you can be sure of what chefs like to call the ‘real deal’ here. It’s setting on the terrace at the centre of the Mar y Sol center is reminiscent of a Tuscan courtyard, with exposed brickwork and pretty archways. Bougainvillea spilling out of flowerpots staged next to a minimalist mix of whitewashed woodwork and exposed metal accessories prove it to be an intelligent balance between traditional and contemporary. On the day I paid a visit diners took to eating in the courtyard under a canopy of white umbrellas that provided a cool respite from the hot July sun. We kicked off with a with a shrimp ceviche amuse bouche, standard procedure here as head chef Paolo likes to surprise diners with a taste of another nation’s cuisine to start the experience. The ceviche’s fresh aroma paid credit to the homegrown herbs used in the restaurant’s kitchen, the flavor carried a satisfying depth that wouldn’t disappoint in the dishes homeland. Back to Italian, starting with a generous caprese salad made using a mozzarella di buffalo worthy of southern Italy and locally grown tomatoes sourced in the campo. Although slightly disproportionate ratio of tomato to mozarella the flavours were spot on. We then ordered a Gamberi Bucintoro, king prawns pilpil Italian style, I would say this it was more of a fresh Arrabiata sauce than pil pil, nevertheless it was delicious with a well timed hot aftertaste from the fresh chili. Next up was the restaurants signature ravioli, homemade and stuffed with fresh spinach and ricotta cheese and coated in a rich fourcheese sauce. Although ricotta translates to recooked in Italian, this dish was anything but. You could eat this stuff all day, frankly. But duty
called, so we persevered with a truffle tagliatelle from the specials board and a somewhat pimped seafood risotto fruti di mare that was guarded by a rather mean looking crayfish. This was the most “Tony Soprano” of all the dishes we tried, with the eyes of the menacing crayfish suggesting that he did not go down without a
At this point we should have pressed on with a couple of secondi; some of the restaurants tempting meat dishes. However I had my eye on a homemade tiramisu, made with fresh mascarpone that would have been a crime to force down on a full belly. Secondi will have to wait. The tiramisu was predictably good, the level of good that would call for an encore had we not been presented with a cheesecake to follow. Although I like to argue cheesecake is best made, eaten and kept in the states, this one gave the yanks a run for their money. It could have done with a little less cheese, but it would be picky to say it was not good, with a deliciously sharp contrast between the berry coulis and the creamy body. It was a measure of how much we’d enjoyed everything, and how congenial the staff had been, that by the time we were juddering slowly out of our chairs we knew all the team by name, and had even had a try of head waiter Oscar’s hot sauce which is ‘served only to regulars’. Happy I am to be coined a regular of this establishment, for to eat here is to experience a true taste of the Italy, which is no mean feat in our neck of the woods. THE
Mighty REDS L
ocated in the province of Zamora in Castille and León, the Toro Region has recently gained wide acclaim for the quality of its wines. Tinta de Toro is the grape behind that success; an early-ripening grape known for being thick-skinned and potent, which translates into character-filled wines noted for their colour, jammy flavours and top range strength. As one of several Spanish wine regions located along the Duero River, the Toro DO encompasses the town of the same name as well as 14 other towns and villages. Most Toro vineyards lie south of the river. For many decades Toro wines were considered full bodied, slightly rustic reds; however, today they are increasingly elegant, sophisticated, with a distinctive character and real power.
124
D-WINE’S TOP TEN ROBUST REDS AND TODAY’S MOST PRECIOUS JEWEL OF TORO 1 Thermanthia. Numanthia Termes: this is the winery’s extra special cuvée that was awarded the maximum 100 points by Robert Parker for the 2004 vintage and is classed as one of Spain’s most exceptional wines. The indigenous Tinta de Toro grapes were rigorously selected and picked by hand from the ungrafted, prephylloxera vines of a single parcel, aged well over 120 years old.
2 Alabaster. Bodegas Teso La Monja: in ancient times, the Egyptians and Greeks used to preserve their most aromatic perfumes in delightful alabaster bottles. What a lovely introduction to an elegant wine, as delicate as Alabaster, made from grape clusters that have been destalked by hand and trodden in the traditional way so as to achieve a very gentle extraction. Alabaster is the Eguren family’s most exclusive Toro wine — a wine that is pure balance and harmony.
3 Numanthia. Numanthia Termes: recognized as one of Spain’s most outstanding red wines, this wine is named after Numancia, the pace where the Celtiberians struggled valiantly against the mighty Roman legions. These same traits of tenacity and resilience are found in the Toro vineyards, in their resistance to climatic inclemency.
4 Pintia. Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia: this Vega Sicilia owned winery has made a successful attempt at refining the Tinta de Toro, the region’s indigenous Tempranillo grape, by revealing a more elegant side to its personality; it works perfectly well with an ebullient full-fruit expression and power so often found in this variety.

5 San Román. Bodegas Maurodos: San Román appears among the great wines
of Toro. What else could we expect from a great winemaker like Mariano Garcia? It confirms that today’s Toro wines bear no similarity to those strong, rough, harsh wines of times past. This is elegant, fragrant and sophisticated. A classy wine, one of those we so often describe as ‘feminine’.
6 Gran Elías Mora. Bodegas Elías Mora: a classic from Toro, made only in great
vintages with Toro grapes from vines more than 70 years old. This wine is from Pago “Senda de los Lobos” and is considered one of the most reputable in San Román de Hornija.
7 Pago La Jara. Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez: a wine which epitomises
the house brand: good fruit content and toasty oak. A rounded, pleasant and powerful wine, made from Tinta de Toro grapes and originating from three single estate vineyards with vines aged between 50 to 60 years old that are low-yielding and produce small clusters.
8 Victorino. Bodegas Teso la Monja: Victorino is made from Tinta de Toro
grapes, originating from vineyards over 45 years old located in Valdefinjas, Toro and Villabuena del Puente, with yields of 15 hl/ha.
9 Almirez. Bodegas Teso La Monja: Almirez comes from old, ungrafted, headpruned Tinta de Toro vines. The wine spent 12 months in 30 per cent new French oak. A fabulous effort which results in a wine that could easily pass for a big, rich Chateauneuf du Pape, even though there is not a touch of Grenache to be found in it.
10 Paydos. Viñedos Alonso del Yerro: Paydos comes from ungrafted bush
vines between 30 and 60 years old, planted on sandy soil with chalky clay and gravel. It is aged in French oak for 15 months under the supervision of consultant Stephane Derenoncourt.
You may find verticals of all these wines at D-Wine Marbella, come and taste one of Spain’s most exciting reds. D-Wine also stocks the exclusive “Teso la Monja 2008 and 2009” in its first two vintages: the Eguren family´s most outstanding wine and a winemaker’s jewel which elevates Spanish viticulture. This wine is grown and produced biodynamically, totally handcrafted
and presented in a display case befitting its magnificence. The Teso La Monja bottle is accompanied by a replica version in a presentation case, carved out of beech wood and created to resemble the innovative ovoid tank from which it emanated after its meticulous biodynamic production processes. Teso La Monja originates from an old pre-phylloxera vineyard, whereby all tasks are performed manually and
at specific times in order to carry out procedures most effectively. These preparations require minimum intervention, thus the wine produced is of maximum character and indicative of the terroir and grapes. This costly approach results in a wine, which is exclusive and in limited supply. Teso La Monja is deemed one of the most expensive wines within Spain and one which many critics are already placing on the podium of Spain’s greatest wines.

A LITTLE TOUCH OF
France IN MARBELLA
H
ere in the SOCIETY offices we tend to hear a good deal of local gossip – most of it not repeatable without the advice of a good legal team – but the up-side of this is that we find out exactly which restaurants are being raved about. Le Discret is a place which we could not wait to visit after all the amazing things that we had been hearing about this new Nueva Andalucía venue. A quick look at Trip Advisor revealed that it had won a very enviable 100 per cent ‘excellent’ rating, so by the time we arrived we were anticipating great things of this very welcome Gallic addition to Marbella’s gastronomic community.
peaceful option of ordering a bottle of Chablis and the Diane from Côte de Provence.
Think French; as soon as you enter the restaurant you are aware that you are in a place where food is afforded roughly the same importance as oxygen. Personally, we would have been disappointed with anything less, but what we were relieved and delighted to note was that the welcome was very friendly, so there was never any question of feeling the ignoramus at the feast. Céline does an excellent job of affording firsttime guests and a growing number of dedicated repeat visitors the same warm welcome, so within a very short space of time we forgot that we were Le Discret virgins and settled down at our table on the beautiful terrace to scan the menu.
After that we only had to worry about the main courses.
Given the fact that we were settling ourselves in for the full French experience, we also decided to ask for the wine menu. While Spanish reds and whites are represented, the focus is very much on the best of French vineyards. With our party of three being split on the vexed issue of reds versus whites we decided to take the

Then all we had to worry about was what we were going to choose from the list of gorgeous dishes. Our classically French starter was recommended to us by the Le Discret team, so that was an easy decision.
Céline was a reliable source of information about every dish on the menu and her help meant that the ordering process was much shorter than it would otherwise have been; she also told us that all of the ingredients used in every dish on Le Discret’s menus were fresh and delivered daily. Depth of flavour is central to chef Mikael’s philosophy and he believes that only the best produce delivers the results for which he is aiming, so he has spent some time finding suppliers that always provide the finest products. We had been thinking about ordering the Tabouleh à la Francaise as a starter but Céline’s advice was
Our final decision took some time, not surprising when the menu contains such wonderfully tempting entries as Magret of Duck with Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans, Provençal Tomatoes and Honey with Rosemary Sauce or Spiced Ox Cheek with Mashed Potatoes and a Red Wine Jus.
that we should go for a real blast of authenticity and order the Confit Fig filled with Foie Gras, served with Duck Magret and a glass of Peach Liquor. Marked as a ‘must’ on the menu and known as Le Discret’s signature dish, this was nothing less than a little bit of France on a plate; with the sun shining down on us and the terrace filling up with diners it was easy to imagine that we were on holiday in Provence. What the boss would have said about that insane notion is anyone’s guess, however this starter really did set the scene very effectively. Having given our taste-buds a very enjoyable workout we were ready for our main course and made sure that our glasses were topped up. We covered all bases with the next course, choosing the Millefeuille of Vegetables served with Tomato Sauce and Parmesan Crisp, the Moules Frites served in a White Wine and Garlic Sauce and the 250g Argentinian Entrecote with French Fries and Salad. These dishes were shared among

us, the combination of vegetarian, seafood and meat providing some glorious flavours and textures. Although the food gurus would probably not approve of this method of consuming food, it certainly allowed us all to enjoy some of Le Discret’s greatest hits. The entrecôte, in particular, practically melted in the mouth in a way that only the finest Argentinian steak can. Just before our main courses arrived we made sure that our glasses were filled so that we could enjoy our red and white wine with our food. Both of these wines provided an excellent counterpoint to our food, proving that it pays to ask the advice of the staff, whose wide-ranging knowledge of the menu and the wine list is a great help to indecisive diners. The dessert menu also sidetracked us for some time, especially when one of the party noticed that it contained that classic Ile Flottante. However, we were sidetracked by the Profiteroles Choux with Vanilla Ice Cream and Chocolate Sauce (and who doesn’t like profiteroles?), chef Mikael’s Tarte Tatin and Entremet with an Almond base filled with Chocolate Mousse and topped with Caramel. Until we saw it on the menu we actually had no idea
what an entremet was but, with the help of a smartphone, we were able to discover that it is a term typically used to describe a multi-layered mousse based cake comprising complementary flavours and textural contrasts. All very interesting, but what this description failed to mention is that it is delicious, as were the classic tarte tatin and the profiteroles, which tasted as sinful as they looked. We also noticed that a three-course 15€ set menu was also available, with a choice of four starters and three mains and desserts, which would be ideal for first-time visitors, business diners or those on a tight budget. Le Discret offers a great excuse to reconnect with French cuisine – the menu is a brilliant combination of classic French recipes and imaginative twists on well-established dishes – and is open from Monday to Saturday from 12:00 until 23:00. Just a word of warning – book early or you will have no hope of securing a table! Le Discret Avenida del Prado, Nueva Andalucía. Tel: +34 952 929 321 info@lediscret.com

Two years later, we had been well acquainted with each other’s family and friends and we had been on a few holidays together and we were definitely ready to take the next step in our relationship. It was just a case of him popping the question. Last September we
went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me
because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do.
It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had Michknown ael and each other. We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.
I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.
ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…
The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain! I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

After the sounds of the Spanish guitar and a few champagne cocktails later, guests were ushered to the reception on the outdoor terrace surrounded by olive trees with suspended Chinese lanterns and wicker hearts. Surprises for our guests, and our selves, were ‘wow’ factors starting with flamenco dancing, speeches and performances from our loved ones to large glow sticks on our entrance, a live bongo player over a UK DJ spinning the best beats and then a firework finale. Lunch on the Run
SOCIETY PINBOARD
SOCIETY Marbella takes five to speak to David Fisher, owner of the hugely popular Café Yanx, about his new pop-up kitchen in Centro Plaza. How did the idea for Market Kitchen come about? On my infrequent but much needed trips into London, I could not help but notice the ever-growing army of street food traders appearing all over the capital. Whether it is start-up ethnic stalls or established city restaurants offering up lunch packs outside offices, street food has revolutionised the London dining scene for people on the go. While it is often difficult to get a seat for lunch around Centro Plaza on Saturday market day, I thought both stallholders and shoppers would benefit from a tasty, quickserve “lunch on the run”. And so the idea for Market Kitchen was born! What type of products will be offered at the Kitchen? We already have the staff, the skills, and the ovens from running Café Yanx, but the menu will be quite different at the Market Kitchen. I couldn’t see the point in duplicating what we already do in the main restaurant although some American favourites still feature on the menu such as
A Love for Lebanese Arabia, a new BlueBay Gourmet venue located in the heart of Puerto Banus, opened its doors for the first time last month. This is the first Lebanese fine dining restaurant on the front line of the Port. For significant portions of succulent Lebanese fare, head no further than this cozy dining room, lit up by lanterns. Lebanese Chef, Hanna Bou Sanae prepares authentic dishes with fresh ingredients and powerful spices to reflect a true Lebanese dining experience. The menu contains a tempting selection of seafood, grilled meat, authentic desserts and much more. Arabia restaurant’s philosophy is “food is life and sharing it is one of the great joys of being alive”. If this a statement with which you agree, pay a visit to this plush new venue. arabiarestaurant.es reservas@arabiarestaurant.es
hot Roast Pork Rolls with sautéed onions and sauce toppings and Meatball Marinara Baguettes. Roast Turkey carved to order and traditional recipe warm Sausage Rolls will add a touch of Englishness to the Kitchen. I tested all the new dishes on our loyal Spanish friends and they loved them, at least that’s what I think they were saying as they munched on sausage rolls and freebie Fresh Juices squeezed and pulped to order! “Lunch on the Run” has most definitely arrived in Centro Plaza at MARKET KITCHEN; with nothing more than four euros, expect a queue!

A Rare Culinary Gem
It’s no secret that the Coast is lined with countless restaurants, some good and some not so good, but every once in a while a new venue opens, which is different from the rest and creates a real buzz. We present Paella’s y más; despite being open for only six weeks, Marbella residents and tourists alike are flocking through the doors of this stylish urban brasserie, designed by the inimitable Pedro Peña. This arrozeria or brasserie d’arroz offers guests a unique version of standard Spanish rice and
pasta or fideua dishes, combining distinctive flavours such as salmon, spinach and blue cheese to create a dish that would be impossible to find elsewhere along the Coast. Their topend Iberian meats are also in another league; eat homemade croquetas with the finest bellota ham. Like we have said, everything about Paella’s y más shouts quality. Head Chef Javier Ponte began his culinary career 30 years ago. His passion for cooking led to his studies in French cuisine at a prestigious culinary school in Brussels. Having Andalusian heritage on his father’s side, and discovering Marbella over 12 years ago, Chef Ponte decided that Marbella city centre was the ideal location to create his urban city garden terrace brasserie, offering soul-
satisfying Spanish cuisine cultivated in tradition and passion. Paella’s y Más’s 75-seat dining room and 75-seat terrace is located at Jacinto Benavente 33 in the heart of Marbella, welcoming guests Tuesday- Sunday from 12:00-16:30 / 19:30-24:00 hrs. It is open for breakfast and coffees – you can meet for a business or casual lunch; it’s also ideal for groups or family celebrations in their private dining room adjacent to the sunny terrace. For more information and current updates, follow their social media stream or contact Chef Javier Ponte directly. Paella’s y más, Jacinto Benavente 33, Marbella 29601. Oh What a Night!
It’s a Small World in the Seven Kingdoms
It will be a night to remember at the Beach House this month with the Jersey Boys performing classic hits such as ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’, ‘December 1963 (Oh What a Night)’ and ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’. Masquerade will then keep the party going until the early hours. As always, there is only limited space available so be sure to book your table for what is set to be a fantastic evening of live entertainment.
It didn’t take long for the Game of Thrones cast to find out that SmallWorld Cafe has named their popular, flavoured Kangen waters in their new menu after characters from the hit TV series. The cast has asked SmallWorld to include the King’s Guard cocktail. The much anticipated season five will be filming in Seville - perhaps we’ll be lucky enough to spot one of the cast in the busy cafe!

World Trade Centre To Open In Gibraltar
Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, officially broke ground for the eagerly awaited World Trade Centre Gibraltar. This global brand has finally arrived on The Rock, marked by the Chief Minister operating heavy machinery and drilling the first foundations. The man behind World Trade Centre, Gregory Butcher has praised the project as being a fantastic addition to Gibraltar, due to the globally recognizable brand that the World Trade Centre carries. According to Butcher, the brand represents a “byword for corporate quality and success - that’s why so many of the world’s biggest companies choose to base themselves in World Trade Centres on every continent”. The project adds Gibraltar to a global business community, reflecting the
ambition for growth found within Government and local companies. The building will offer a range of benefits never seen before on The Rock, from ready-to-move-into super-premium office space with a stunning doubleheight 24-hour reception through to advanced well-being systems which minimize sick building syndrome and keep staff healthy and motivated. Head of Sales and Marketing for World Trade Center Gibraltar, Pete Burgess commented, “There is no doubt that the World Trade Centre will become the heartbeat of the Gibraltar business community and the obvious home for any new businesses looking to relocate here. The best businesses will always seek a signature address”. The World Trade Centre will officially open its doors in in Spring 2016 on Bayside Road.
