PUBLISHER’S LETTER

As we swing into August, can we not take a few minutes to acknowledge what a great summer it has been so far? I don't know what we would say if we had to name our highlight but Foreigner at Puente Romano in June was pretty close to perfect, as was Marbella favourite, George Benson at the same venue in July. We have also been wowed by the various events at Teatro, which is already becoming one of the main places to visit for a great night out. The one drawback has, as usual, been the massive increase in traffic, but then you can't hope for loads of visitors and then complain when the roads fill up. Anyway, there's still more to enjoy over the next few weeks, so fasten your seatbelts and prepare for more fun and games! This month we have some very colourful offerings for you. Inspired by India's successful cinema industry (the largest in the world – take that, Hollywood!), Eleanor McKenzie investigates how the action has shifted from Bombay based Bollywood and Tollywood, which is located in Tollygunge, Kolkata, to the movies currently being produced from Film Nagar in Hyderabad. Perhaps the distinction isn't immediately obvious to the foreign consumer, but surely having more than one major centre of film production can only bolster India's economy? It is also tempting visitors to enjoy the many attractions of the beautiful city of Hyderabad. On the subject of colour, there is no social media platform that attracts more colourful exchanges – and language – than Twitter. If you have ever found yourself becoming entangled in a fruitless dispute with some unknown person over an opinion you have offered on the subject of politics, religion, or even football then you will know how much more heated things can become when you happen to be a celebrity. We have compiled a Top 10 list of celebrity Twitter retirees, many of whom only managed a

few days of cold turkey, the wimps! This month we also take a look at the considerable talent of sculptor Nimrod Messeg, whose Messeg Gallery is a true showcase of his talent. Nimrod is an artist who is most definitely not afraid of getting his hands dirty, undertaking the work that most sculptors leave to their assistants and meaning that his artworks are completely the products of his imagination. This month Ian Kuah somehow managed to find himself behind the wheel of the brand new McLaren 7205 and, as is his normal procedure, proceeded to give it a thorough work-out. It is said of far too many international companies that their reputation precedes them, but in the case of McLaren this is completely true. As the producers of some of the world's leading luxury cars, this British company is a marque that causes excitement among even the most jaded and cynical members of the luxury car market. Not only is a McLaren a joy to look at, it's always a cracker to drive. Apart from this our dog expert, George Gough reminds us to honour the dog (not necessary in my household, I can assure you!), Padre Peter reveals that George Washington smoked pot and still managed to be America's first and most famous president and Jonathan Yeardon test drives that McLaren of the hairdressing world, a Dyson Supersonic. We also have some great ideas for beachwear from Sisko Akt and Virginia Macari, so if you haven't yet found the ideal outfit for this summer, take heart – it's not too late - and we cover all the best parties on the Coast from the past few weeks. See you in September! ‘Til next time... Andy Clark

Marbella’s superstar DJs and SOCIETY magazine’s favourite music maestros are here to bring you the hottest and hippest tracks of the month. The Danish duo have selected some banging beats from Pop to RnB and from House to Funk. Drake - Signs (Dancehall) He’s back at it again with the summer hits. This track is very similar to his recent big songs - but then why mess with something that isn't broken? DJ Khaled ft. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller - Wild Thoughts (R&B/Latino) DJ Khaled is back with yet another smash hit featuring samples from Carlos Santana's 90s hit, 'Maria Maria' and, with vocals from Rihanna and new super talented R&B artist Bryson Tiller, this track is on fire! G4SHI - Turn Me Down (Hip-Hop) This guy is going places and here's yet another of the hip-hop club bangers he keeps on coming up with. London Grammar - Trials (Indie) Their new album is finally out and we are very excited about it because this is a band that makes music that hits you in the feels. Highly recommend. Calvin Harris, Travis Scott - Prayers Up (Funk) Big respect to Calvin for switching up his style completely and nailing it. His new album is just pure funk joy with some awesome collaborations. MEMBA - Warrior (Trap) Turn your speakers up and feel the bass. This track is seriously sick!

26

Calvin Harris, Pharrell, Katy Perry & Big Sean - Feels (Funk/Pop) Keep an ear open for this song because we think that it is definitely going to be one of the biggest hits of this summer. C. Tangana - Mala Mujer (Latino) This track went viral worldwide on Spotify last month. This kid is pure talent and may we just say that it's great to see a Spanish artist bringing something fresh to the scene? If you haven't heard of him, go check him out – you won't be sorry!

Slave to the

Dancing at Teatro Marbella was a great experience for me...

SOCIETY caught up with Rafael Amargo, one of Spain’s most celebrated choreographers and dancers, after his performance at TEATRO MARBELLA.

J

esús Rafael García Hernández to give him his full name was born in Granada in 1975. His artistic name, Rafael Amargo, is taken from a poem by Lorca, and the Spanish poet is a major inspiration for his dance work. He has gone from dancing for other companies to having his own dance company and his signature combination of flamenco with contemporary dance has brought him international acclaim.

Describe the ways in which growing up in Granada influenced your deep knowledge of flamenco. Granada, the city where I was born, along with Jerez and Seville are considered the artistic triumvirate of flamenco, which is an intangible part of our heritage. I am very grateful to have been born into the family of one of the greatest poets in history - Federico García Lorca. I grew up in the premier library of the province of Granada, living with books, and I never had to come out the closet because in my house there were only open doors, hence my freedom to be myself. What made you want to add contemporary dance styles to your performance and choreography?

I like to keep an open channel between me and my audience so they can see there are no tricks, no pretending, no cheating.

Nowadays, flamenco is very modernized, because it takes influence from other genres such as indie, ethnic, folklore, pop and jazz. Flamenco marries everything because flamenco is an art form with strong roots, and its roots always prevail. I am a very eclectic person; I can play with any genre because I can shape it. I always try to be faithful to who I am, so that the viewer experiences that fidelity when they view my work. I also like to keep an open channel between me and my audience so they can see there are no tricks, no pretending, no cheating. What was it like studying with Martha Graham in New York? I’d compare studying with Martha Graham to drinking

from the fountain of wisdom. I was lucky enough to study in one of the best cities in the world and it was fantastic for me to be able to combine flamenco with other disciplines. Obviously, I was very fortunate that my parents could send me overseas and I could choose Martha Graham’s school, which was always a dream of mine. You have a reputation for combining dance with other art forms and collaborating with sculptors, photographers and painters. Can you tell us about your passion for this and with whom you have worked? Most of the time, artists intuitively seek support from other artists due to certain needs, similarities and aspirations that they share. Since I arrived in Madrid, and now with the benefit of hindsight I understand why, I was drawn to plastic arts. I was fortunate to be sponsored by Esperanza D’Ors, Luis Gordillo, Rafael Canogar and Manolo Cuevas from the Estampa Gallery. I’ve also worked on shows with artists from the Vienna Opera. It also happened because my producer was director of one of the largest contemporary art fairs in the world and from that point, my costumes and scenery always had a structure and colour connected with other arts. I also

collaborated with Eduardo Chillida when he opened a show on the beach at San Sebastian. You started your own dance company in 1997 – what are the challenges of running it and what are your goals for it? A lot of times, we as artists try to answer questions like this one, but it’s not easy to answer. To run a dance company you have to allow everything to run its course, you’ve got to go with the flow, relax, cooperate and, most importantly, be faithful to yourself. Where do you look for inspiration when you start to choreograph a new ballet?

I hope they invite me to come back.

of all the performing arts. I studied dramatic art as well as dance and love having the opportunity to act from a text whether it is comedy or drama. Dancing at Teatro was a great experience for me and I love Marbella. I hope they invite me to come back.

Thanks Rafael for talking to us and we also hope you’ll return to Marbella so that we can see your incredible blend of flamenco and contemporary dance again.

Most of the time I get my inspiration from something autobiographical, or from a photographic image. How was the experience of performing at Teatro? I’m thrilled to have been asked to perform at this exceptional new venue in Marbella. For me, theatre is the mother

Strike – BBC Are we looking forward to this? After reading JK Rowling's novels featuring this most idiosyncratic of detectives we can say that, yes, we are hoping that this will be one of the best new series of the year. Writing under the pseudonym, Robert Galbraith, the Harry Potter author has created one of her most memorable characters in one-legged military policeman turned private detective, Cormorant Strike who will be played by Tom Burke. Best known as Athos from the BBC's adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's The Three Musketeers, Burke will no doubt bring his unique brand of bruised charm to this shambolical character.

Jane Grey was Queen of England for nine days. Using her position as cousin to the deceased king, her father and his conspirators put her on the throne ahead of the king’s half-sister Mary, who claimed her crown and locked Jane in the Tower, where she turned her father’s grab for power into her own martyrdom. ‘Learn you to die’ is the advice that Jane gives her younger sister Katherine, who has no intention of dying. But her lineage makes her a threat to the infertile Queen Mary and, when Mary dies, to her sister Queen Elizabeth, who will never allow Katherine to marry and produce a potential royal heir before she does. So when Katherine’s secret marriage is revealed by her pregnancy, she too must go to the Tower. ‘Farewell, my sister,’ writes Katherine to the youngest Grey sister, Mary. A beautiful dwarf, disregarded by the court, Mary finds it easy to keep secrets, especially her own. Mary is aware of her position as a possible heir to the throne. But she is determined to outwit her ruthless cousin Elizabeth.

The Word is Murder: Anthony Horowitz

A wealthy woman strangled six hours after she’s arranged her own funeral. A very private detective uncovering secrets but hiding his own. A reluctant author drawn into a story he can’t control. What do they have in common?

I'm Dying Up Here – SKY Atlantic Following in the retro steps of the widely anticipated (but not recommissioned) HBO series Vinyl, which focused on the music business in the 1970s, this new project is a comedy-drama set in LA's stand-up comedy circuit in 1973. The cast list isn't exactly stellar but the premise is intriguing and, with Jim Carrey as one of the executive producers, it's reasonable to assume that IDUH will depict a warts and all picture of the scene. The action largely takes place in Goldie's, a fictitious comedy club on the Sunset Strip with the central character, Goldie Herschlag (played by Melissa Leo) loosely based on comedy legend, Mitzi Shore.

Unexpected death, an unsolved mystery and a trail of bloody clues lie at the heart of Anthony Horowitz's pageturning new thriller. SPREAD THE WORD. THE WORD IS MURDER. Introducing a brilliant new detective series set in London by a global bestseller. Ray Donovan – SKY Atlantic This popular drama returns for a fifth series with Liev Schreiber reprising his role as the eponymous fixer who keeps his wealthy and powerful clients out of trouble with a combination of bribes, payoffs and threats. Unlike I'm Dying Up Here, this is a project that believes in rolling out the star power and viewers can look forward to the first appearance of Susan Sarandon as she joins Schreiber, Jon Voight and top British actor Eddie Marsan for this latest outing. By Eleanor McKenzie We call the Los Angeles film industry ‘Hollywood’, which then led to the Bombay industry being given the name Bollywood and now we have Tollywood, which is giving its Mumbai/Bombay-based competitors a run for their money at India’s box offices and is cleaning thanks to its stunning blockbusters with visual effects that are the most mindblowing manifestation of glorious Technicolor imaginable. But where is Tollywood and why has it suddenly started to dominate the Indian cinema industry?

WHERE IS TOLLYWOOD?

I first came across Tollywood while watching Joanna Lumley’s latest travel series, this time on her birth country India. During a stop off in Hyderabad in southern India she visited a film studio to discover how they create the dazzling effects. The Hyderabadi version of Tollywood features films made in the Telugu language. However, there is another Tollywood based in Tollygunge, Kolkata, West Bengal making films in Bengali. Both have existed since the early 1900s, but it is the films currently coming out of Film Nagar, a district of Hyderabad, that is currently making the biggest splash in Indian cinemas.

BIG NUMBERS

Here are just a few facts and figures that speak to its sheer size: it has 10 films listed in The 100 Greatest Indian Films; its film production facilities hold the Guinness World Record for being the largest in the world; the Prasads IMAX in Hyderabad has one of the largest 3D IMAX screens and is the most attended cinema screen in the world and according to data, the Telugu industry produces the most films per annum in India. And, its 2017 release “Baahubali: The Conclusion” became the first highest grossing film of all time not just in India, but worldwide. Eat your heart out Spielberg and Co!

The Hyderabad film industry started with silent films in 1921, with the production of “Bhisma Pratighna.” The father-son partnership of Raghupati Venkaiah and R.S. Prakash directed the film, an example of the ‘family business’ approach to cinema that prevails in India, which has an exceptional number of film dynasty families both behind and in front of the camera. The father-son team went on to produce and direct many more films, which typically focus on religion, parables, religious figures, and morals. When the talkies finally broke through in 1931, the first Telugu film with sound was “Bhakta Prahlad”, produced by H.M. Reddy. Talking films attracted a huge following in India and in 1934, the first commercially successful film, “Lavakusa” appeared. The film drew in an unprecedented number of viewers and made the industry a permanent part of mainstream Indian culture. But, just as this nascent industry started to flourish, World War II started and due to a scarcity of resources the British Raj imposed a limit on filmstrip usage, reducing it to just 11,000 feet. As a result, there were fewer films produced during the war than in previous years. However, before this limit was imposed independent film making increased and studios emerged that made actors and actresses sign contracts that prevented them for working for other studios, which was also the norm in Hollywood. Film content also shifted from social issues to folklore and mythology stories, a factor that defines Tollywood movies today, most of which are made at Ramoji Film City.

RAMOJI FILM CITY

Ramoji Film City has 1,666 acres of back lots, 47 sound stages, warehouses, postproduction facilities, hotels, restaurants and a theme park. It is also one of India’s most popular tourist destinations and receives up to one-and-a-half million visitors annually, but as yet, foreign tourists have not discovered it. Visitors are ferried around in red buses to see the various sights including an airport terminal, a London Street, a hospital set, prisons and lush Japanese gardens for dance scenes. You can even get married at Ramoji Film City if you are in the mood for a theatrical setting. Indeed, it is so well equipped that all any director needs to make a film here is a script. A film can be shot, edited, mixed and made ready for release all under one roof, so to speak. That is unheard of in most other film industries where editing suites and all the other technology

needed to get the finished product to the screen are in a myriad number of locations; often they are in different countries. And, if you need extras, catering, lights or generators, they are all right there, as is the endless array of scenery and props:

you can have a temple delivered to your set within minutes, or horses – real and plastic – there seem to be few limits to the treasures stashed away in the Ramoji City prop shop. Right now it is the Baahubali film franchise that is propelling Tollywood beyond India. The fantasy epic grossed $120 million in its first week. The two-part film took five years to complete and there were 613 shooting days. Ninety-five percent of the film was shot in Ramoji Film City.

VISIT TOLLYWOOD

The film’s producer, Shobu Yarlagadda is a native of Hyderabad and not only loves it for its cinema industry but for the fact that the city is cosmopolitan, has a thriving technology industry and has been named the best city to live in India on several occasions. Its main tourist attractions are the Golconda Fort and Salarjung Museum, which is one of the world’s largest museums with 1.1 million objects. And, the best place to stay is the Taj Falaknuma Palace, which offers you views across the city from 2,000ft.

HYDERABAD HAS BEEN NAMED THE BEST CITY TO LIVE IN INDIA ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS.

Visiting Hyderabad and immersing yourself in its Tollywood film culture and everything it has to offer beyond that must surely make it a new tourist destination. Furthermore, it is also a leading world centre for the diamond trade and you will see some of the most ravishing and outrageous pieces of precious gem jewellery – they will dazzle your senses just as much as Tollywood’s blockbuster films.

Reality Bites The story so far... Natalie hasn’t stopped moving lately! And, no, we don’t just mean her usual whirlwind of business decisions and social engagements either – she has also moved house. Just as well she took some time out to participate in some of the summer events or we’d really be worried about her!

Moving House

We’ve been searching for the perfect property for a while now, I have a very large tick list, including cinema room, gym, pool and - of course - walk-in closets! I’m happy to say we have finally found our dream house and it even had a wine cellar to store the champers. The view is incredible and I’m enjoying long evenings sitting on the garden with friends and family, enjoying the views of Puerto Banús’s gorgeous harbour.

Nikki Beach

As a thank you from our affiliates Nikki Beach, Mua, Anoushka and myself from Bardou were invited to Nikki Beach Privé for dinner. The food, service and atmosphere were fantastic! Now we have night time chic too!

Jessica

You know the celebrities always head straight to Bardou when they're in town and another beauty to hit the salon was the goddess, Jessica Rose, from the reality show, Love Island. We were blown away by her stunning good looks and personality. Hair by Lauren and make-up by Danielle.

We're Going to Ibiza

Bardou is hitting Ibiza! We're so pleased to announce that, as of next season, you will be able to find your favourite celebrity hair and beauty salon at one of the hottest hotels on the White Island! Keep your eyes peeled for more updates.

Celebrity beautician, reality television star, and Director of Bardou Salon in Puerto Banús Natalie

gives SOCIETY readers the chance to keep up with her latest exploits.

Ladies Day at Boardwalk

Bardou was very proud to sponsor the famous Ascot Ladies' Day event at Boardwalk. All proceeds went to Amusivig, a very worthwhile charity that works with women and children who have been victims of domestic violence. Boardwalk raised money to pay for a psychologist to help the children to process what they have seen and been through. We also pay for the 24 hour phone line that woman can use when the abuse is ongoing. Unbelievably, domestic violence affects one in three women here in Spain; unfortunately it is thought a 'private' matter, so the families of the victims sometimes turn against the victim for speaking out! This means that they are then alone with their children and Amusivig supports them. We also raise money at Christmas for them, buying all the children presents and throwing a big party for the mothers and children, as well as the inhabitants of various orphanages.

The Godmother

My best friend Hannah enjoyed a few days out in Marbella where we did lots of catching up at Ocean Club, Playa Padre and Mahiki Beach. This was a strictly sin vino trip for her, as she has just found out she's expecting and I'm going to be a fairy godmother!

38

Sundays at El Ancla

Another of my favourite places and where you will often see me is El Ancla; the food is delicious, the wine is always perfectly chilled and the saltwater pool makes it a great place for families or socialising. Watching the sunset here is a truly beautiful experience.

Reality TV star and swimwear entrepreneur, Virginia Macari opens her doors exclusively to offer an insight into her travels and plans for the future.

None but NOBU

Between business meetings, baby play dates and bikini designing, I felt I deserved a night out with some beautiful girlfriends at NOBU, my latest favourite restaurant in Marbella. I've been a fan since visiting the Milan branch during Fashion Week. I adore what Jean-Pierre Martel, one of Spain’s most cutting edge designers, has done with the cool interior. As for the food, the Black Cod, the Oysters and Lychee Martinis are to die for. I love it here because you can slip into Suite afterwards for a few more cheeky drinks and some dancing before calling the driver to pick you up. I'm delighted that Marbella has this wonderful modern restaurant. In fact - as I always say - Puente Romano spoils us with their venues. Now, I wonder if Jean-Pierre will agree to design the interior of my new dream house I plan to build here in Marbella someday?

Sintillate in the Sun

If you’re a swimwear entrepreneur then, far from having a summer holiday in July, you find your workload increasing to crazy levels. Just ask Virginia Macari!

Playing on the playa

I try never to miss a party at Playa Padre because I'm always spoiled rotten when I go there. Now, there I was, thinking that I was their favourite client, but it turns our that they treat every guest like royalty! It's certainly a strange location but the service, food and drinks are impeccable. I recently booked a table for the charity event, the Global Gift Gala party and invited some of my very special friends to join me. We danced and drank the night away in our designer dresses with Eva Longoria and – yes, you guessed it - we were the last to leave. Thank you, Playa Padre, for an incredible evening. Go and check it out on a Sunday if you're looking for some lively weekend fun.

The gorgeous and fun SINTILLATE team invited Virginia Macari Beachwear Couture to model the new collection at their Nikki Beach pool party. We braved some crazy weather early that morning and were nervous about the rain but the sun came out and what a fun day we all had! We flew over one of our muses, Britain’s Chloe Lloyd, to be the star guest. Chloe is always a pleasure to work with, as were all of our 10 beautiful models. I had invited a group of really cool friends from Norway and Ireland and we were probably the last to leave. If you are looking for something to do on a Thursday, head down to Nikki Beach. Dean and Hannah from SINTILLATE really know how to throw a good party. You’ll find me there dancing by the pool drinking a Piña Colada, eating the best sushi wearing a VM bikini and enjoying life.

The art of Marbella

I studied Art History so this really does excite me. We are very lucky that, in August we play host to one of the first major modern and contemporary art fairs on the Costa del Sol. This is an event that allows collectors, artists, curators and art lovers to appreciate and enjoy art, educate themselves and acquire works of exceptional quality. The curatorial team and host committee are focused on making Art/Marbella a premiere stop in the international cultural calendar. This is where you will find my little boy and me, walking around and absorbing the exhibits. It's held in the Palacio de Ferias, Congresos y Exposiciones de Marbella. Check out this expanded Warhol by Fabián Ugalde, just one of the many pieces that will be on show. See you there!

Paris match?

It has been a busy month, travelling around France stocking boutiques with my swimwear, but I managed to find the time to meet some friends for lunch in Baoli Beach in Cannes. We stayed at The Ritz so, of course, I didn't want to come home. On the last day we took a boat to visit my stockists in my favourite village of Saint Tropez. That evening we checked out the most wonderfully glamorous restaurant I've ever been to! L'Opera is right on the port and the food, the décor and the service were all incredible. I was so impressed that I'm going back there in August with my family. We will be staying in my friend's stunning chalet on a vineyard in Provence, right next to Johnny Depp (and I'm definitely packing my binoculars!) It will be the perfect holiday with family and close friends, a 'do not disturb' holiday, so au revoir!

e all love social media, don't we? It's a great way of keeping up to speed with friends and family, finding out what our favourite celebrities are doing and communicating our ideas and thoughts. Until, that is, an unguarded comment causes even people we have previously considered friends to turn nasty and then it can all cut up rough very quickly. So just imagine that you're a household name; how would you react if one of your tweets called in the trolls? Even the wealthy and influential have been known to beat a retreat in the face of a social media storm or even just peer pressure. Here's our Top 10 of Twitter retirees.

Stephen Fry Strop Factor: 4 out of 10 He might be one of the most followed people on Twitter, but even the great and the good can have their problems with online trolls. Fry famously waltzed off in a huff after a follower opined that his posts were, well, a bit boring. Perish the thought! The erstwhile host of QI responded, “You've convinced me. I'm obviously not good enough. I retire from Twitter henceforward. Bye everyone.” Having thought about that statement for a while he returned for a second go: “Well maybe I'll see how I feel in a few days. Very low and depressed at the moment and any drop of meanness makes it so much worse. Sorry.” His Twitter absence lasted no more than a few days.

Nicki Minaj Strop Factor: 7 out of 10 This would make a good pub quiz question; what do Stephen Fry and Nicki Minaj have in common? Well, on the face of it, very little but Minaj would most definitely understand Fry's wobble since she also chose to pull the plug on her Twitter account when trolls decided that her output wasn't up to scratch. Her response was maybe less gracious than Fry's but no less heartfelt: “A voice in my head told me to delete my Twitter and that's what I did. Like seriously, it's but so much a person can take. Good f******bye.” Quite.

40

Keira Knightley Strop Factor: 1 out of 10 The actress was sufficiently curious to open an account under a false name but her Twitter tenure didn't last long, as she claims that the experience brought back all the worst memories of her schooldays. “It made me feel a little bit like being in a school playground and not being popular and standing on the sidelines sort of going 'argh!” she recalled. If she took our advice she would have at least had the front to open the account under her own name and things could have been very different. How long do you imagine the Pirates of the Caribbean star would have remained Billy no mates if people had known who she was?

Kanye West Strop Factor: 3 out of 10 If you have an ego the size of a small planet then what better platform than Twitter to indulge in a little high velocity bragging? Kanye West's reputation as a blowhard and braggart precedes him, so one suspects that many of his followers were in it for the laughs, rather than any pearls of wisdom he might have offered. Our favourites? How about, “You may be talented but you're not Kanye West”? We are also very fond of, “I have to dress [his wife] Kim every day so she doesn't embarrass me” and the peerless, “Have you ever thought that you were in love with someone but then realized you were just staring in a mirror for 20 minutes?” Oh, Kanye – we were so sad when you left in May. Please come back soon – and bring your big mouth with you. You're an idiot, but you are insanely entertaining!

Zayn Malik

Miley Cyrus

Strop Factor: 8 out of 10

Strop Factor: 3 out of 10 Feminists, avert your eyes now! Apparently (and we can scarcely believe that it's true) the 'Wrecking Ball' singer deleted her Twitter account when she started to date Liam Hemsworth, who doesn't 'do' social media and asked her to disconnect. Ultimately the relationship failed (surprise, surprise!) and Miley returned to natural habitat, delighting her more than two million followers. We think you're better off without him, Miley!

Still probably best known as everyone's favourite member of One Direction after Harry Styles – even though he is no longer part of the band – Zayn Malik has enjoyed a somewhat vexed relationship with Twitter. In 2015 he lashed out at erstwhile friend, Naughty Boy, after suspecting that he might be behind the leak of a music video online before its official release date. He has also bowed out altogether after tweeting, “The reason I don't tweet as much as I used to is because I'm sick of all the useless opinions and hate I get daily. Goodbye Twitter!” Unfortunately he ruined the dramatic effect by reactivating his account only days later. Zayn, Zayn, Zayn – what are we going to do with you?

Alec Baldwin Strop Factor: 10 out of 10 The famously fiery actor has thrown his toys out of his cot on several occasions, generally following one of his blistering rants. However, one of Baldwin's most controversial flounces followed a spat with a Daily Mail journalist who reported that Baldwin's wife, Hilaria, had been texting during actor James Gandolfini's funeral. Dubbing the offending journo a “toxic little queen” Baldwin raged, “My wife and I attend a funeral to pay our respects to an old friend and some toxic Brit writes this f****** trash,” adding, “My wife DID NOT use her phone, in any capacity, at our friend's funeral.” And off he stomped – only to return days later.

Matt Lucas Strop Factor: 9 out of 10 (but completely understandable) Twitter's worst trolls really had a field day in 2009 when Kevin McGee, the former partner of Little Britain's Matt Lucas, killed himself. What especially hurt Lucas was a sick joke posted by a 16 year-old that defied all boundaries of good taste and reason. Lucas openly admitted that the tweet had hit a nerve, posting,

“Shame on you. I'm not joking. I think you should delete that tweet. It really upset me.” After taking some time to think about the incident, Lucas returned, saying “I appreciate all the support on here over the past couple of years but it's time to shut down my Twitter account.” He is now back on Twitter, but stayed away from it for a long time.

Sam Smith Strop Factor: 4 out of 10 We all suffer from brain fade, from getting an easy question wrong at the pub quiz to leaving that vital shopping list at home, but imagine how singer-songwriter Sam Smith felt when he wrongly declared himself the first openly gay man to win an Oscar live on a global broadcast? Smith accepted the gong for Best Original Song for his composition for Bond movie Spectre, 'Writing's On the Wall' at the 2016 Academy Awards but, following his very public gaff, retired from Twitter to let the dust settle. “I'm logging off for a while. Some Martinis shaken not stirred are definitely in order,” he wrote. Hopefully he spent some time boning up on the various LGBT people who had previously won Oscars, Sir Elton John to name but one.

Ed Sheeran Strop Factor: 1 out of 10 Oh, for heaven's sake! You can't tell us that pop's Mr. Nice Guy actually threw a bona fide Twitter strop? Well, naturally, it was of the most mild mannered variety, but following his controversial Glastonbury set there was a certain amount of rumour flying around about his performance involving miming and a backing track rather than actual musicians. Zut alors! Naturally things escalated very quickly and the result was that Ed was forced to explain the use of a 'loop pedal' (no, we haven't a clue either), after which his Twitter account lay dormant for a while. Come on, folks – you can't troll Ed! And the less said about his Game of Thrones cameo, the better. Shh, play nicely now.

Ideal Relationship

or centuries we’ve been socialised to fit ourselves into pre-determined moulds and I wonder if this is something that many of us have extrapolated to our love lives, instead of thinking about who might provide the best fit until death parts us.

Having choices can be difficult for some because it means we have to know ourselves in order to make the best decisions. Having choice can also create a mental tug-of-war between what we want to do and what we feel others expect of us.

We now seem to be living in an age of greater self-awareness and with this awareness comes choice. Previously many choices had been made for us and we were told which careers from which we should choose, what type of partner we should seek to marry, what type of lifestyle we should live, which hours we should work and by what age we should be married and so on. Now we can make many of these choices ourselves, based on what fits our personality and our motivations.

Embracing our responsibility over our own life can be a tricky thing. It brings feelings of control and empowerment, deep joy and many rewards, priceless rewards at times, but it also engenders fear of failure and can make some people feel stuck. So when it comes to dating, how can you be in charge of making great decisions? Explore who you are so that you can build your relationships around your personality, not the other way

around. To do this, asking ourselves good questions is incredibly important. So, allow me to help you! Here are some pertinent things to think about and answer:

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

1. What’s my personality? 2. What’s very important to me: feeling

EMBRACING OUR RESPONSIBILITY OVER OUR OWN LIFE CAN BE A TRICKY THING.

free as a bird? Feeling financially secure? Living close to family? Being adventurous? Having children by a certain age? Shared religious beliefs?

EXPLORE WHO YOU ARE SO THAT YOU CAN BUILD YOUR RELATIONSHIPS AROUND YOUR PERSONALITY

3. What have my past romantic

relationships taught me about what I like and want?

4. What have my past romantic relationships taught me about what I don’t like and am not willing to put up with? 5. What has my relationship with my mother taught me about me?

6. What has my relationship with my father taught me about me? 7. What has my parents’ relationship

taught me about the sort of marriage I want?

8. What have my work and life experiences taught me about me? 9. What sort of person would complement my personality (not necessarily match it)? 10. What sort of person would my

future spouse need to be in order to allow me the things that are important to me? This is your life so be patient with yourself as you mull over the answers. It may take a while for you to get to the heart of what sort of life partner you want as a spouse. If you rush this decision, you may make bad choices that delay your happiness.

Remember - the longer you stay with

the wrong partner, the less time you’ll have left with the right one when they come along.

HAVING CHOICE CAN ALSO CREATE A MENTAL TUG-OF-WAR BETWEEN WHAT WE WANT TO DO AND WHAT WE FEEL OTHERS EXPECT OF US. 55

Meditation and

TESTOSTERONE YOU CAN EMPLOY MEDITATION AND MINDFULNESS TO BOOST TESTOSTERONE – WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?

58

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

R

esearch has proved that, with as little as 20 minutes of meditation per day, levels of cortisol (the stress hormone that degrades muscle tissue) can decrease, which indirectly boosts your testosterone and growth hormone levels. This, in turn, makes muscle building easier and allows for a shorter recovery time after exercise. For years, scientists have shown how cortisol is the one chemical where less is most definitely more. Too much of it lingering around in the system will interfere with the body’s natural ability to heal by hampering the immune system, stripping away bone density and increasing weight gain, blood pressure and cholesterol. Prolonged exposure to cortisol has a major age-accelerating effect on the body, its major catalyst being too much stress. Stress, in the right quantity, is a very normal response - a natural product of our evolution. But chronic stress, the stress that one in four adults in the UK are reported to experience, serves very little use other than to wreck the body. With the pace of life being what it is today, along with modern day technology, the borders between work and life have become increasingly blurred. For many, a 40 hour week has become a 24/7 ordeal, resulting in a perpetual state of hyper arousal.

TOO MUCH OF IT LINGERING AROUND IN THE SYSTEM WILL INTERFERE WITH THE BODY’S NATURAL ABILITY TO HEAL BY HAMPERING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM Can you imagine how a cortisol-flooded, stressed-out body reacts when food is consumed or training commences? With the parasympathetic nervous system suppressed (the part of the nervous system responsible for maintaining the body’s homeostasis, along with the rest-and-digest response), both digestion and absorption are compromised. This is why indigestion, ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome are more common during stressful times. Although exercise is a great way to help alleviate mental stress, if it is not mindfully measured, it can become a doubleedged sword, since most forms of exercise produce additional stress within the body.

SOLUTION

Luckily, scientists have uncovered a powerful solution to all of this, one that requires only a chair, the use of breathing techniques and a little bit of patience. It’s the practice of meditation, which has been proved to have a powerful influence over cortisol levels in the body. In fact, a study by a Rutgers University doctor discovered that meditators on

average have nearly a 50 per cent reduction in cortisol levels, compared to non-meditators. And what is even more impressive is that the results can be seen within a couple of weeks. Incorporating meditation into a post workout routine is a really great idea - not only will it help to reduce any exercise-induced cortisol, but it will allow for testosterone and post-workout protein synthesis to be elevated.

SCIENTISTS HAVE UNCOVERED A POWERFUL SOLUTION TO ALL OF THIS, ONE THAT REQUIRES ONLY A CHAIR, THE USE OF BREATHING TECHNIQUES AND A LITTLE BIT OF PATIENCE GIVE MEDITATION A TRY

The trick to meditating on a chair is to ensure that your buttocks are somewhat higher than your knees. This tilts your pelvis forward and will help to keep your back

WHATS EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE IS THAT RESULTS CAN BE SEEN WITHIN A COUPLE OF WEEKS nice and straight. Ensure that your feet are flat on the ground and your knees bent at 90 degrees. You can either rest your hands on your thighs or folded in your lap. Relax your shoulders and, if at all possible, sit on the edge of the chair with your head aligned over your spine. If your spine needs additional support, feel free to put a cushion behind your back. When starting out, it can be beneficial to follow a guided audio. You will find three progressive meditation audios at HedZen, which will help you to settle into the practice quickly. It is recommended that you start with ‘counting the breath meditation’ once or twice a day for two weeks, before moving on to ‘following the breath’ for two weeks, ending with ‘practice of presence’.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mind-blowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

Feeling Frazzled? This month Jonathan gets wrapped up with one of his favourite clients, tests out the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer and has a damn good rant about sun damage.

B

y now you all know to slather sunscreen all over your face and body to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. But what about your hair? It seems most of you are too busy taking selfies on the beach with your air dried, beach wavy do than thinking about the long term damage you could be doing to your precious mane. Quite a few of my clients have been turning up at the salon with what I can only describe as matted straw on top of their head, reminiscent of something you would find on a barn floor. When I ask them, they of course swear blind that they haven’t been in the sun at all. Funny how their skin seems to have magically turned such a deep shade of mahogany then, isn’t it?. I mean, seriously, even Donatella Versace would think it was too much. You know that hue that you can only get after spending eight hours a day covered in what is basically cooking oil? Yes, of course, you haven’t been anywhere near the sun! I am then told that it’s my fault that their hair is like this (eye roll). I must have used a stronger bleach last time or left the tint on for too long. It is, of course, guaranteed that they will look at me in total disbelief when I point out that it was the sun that got their hair into this current mess, not me.

64

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Sun damage to the hair can manifest as faded hair colour, brittle and dry hair shafts and split ends. The UVA and UVB can both damage the hair in a variety of ways. It can cause permanent damage to the outside covering of the hair which is the cuticle and it can penetrate into the centre of the hair, which is the cortex and cause damage there. The cuticle contains a web of tiny overlapping scales. When the scales are damaged they can not lie flat and will look lifeless, brittle and dry. Think about it; when your skin is burned it goes red and is sore. This is a warning that you have had too much sun. You hair can’t tell you when it's had enough of being cooked. Honestly, I am surprised that some of my clients' hair hasn't ignited. Sun, sea and hair is a pretty lethal combination and don’t get me started on chlorine. It is one of the hardest chemicals to get out of the hair as it loves to bond itself to the hair's natural protein. So you have a dip in the pool and, just for fun, go and bake your wet hair in the sun and then have the audacity to moan at me when it turns green? Well, I ain’t listening. “Do you think my hair looks a little green?” “What did you say Kermit?” We can call it Ker-blonde! Do you think it will catch on?

A Little Added Protection

The first line of defence against the sun is wearing a hat. Choose one that covers all of your hair, or tuck longer locks underneath it. I love a big floppy hat paired with a long floaty wrap dress which, now I think about it, is reminiscent of the flake advert that was doing the rounds when I was a kid. Next prevent (and reverse) damage with a mask once a week to maintain moisture. I would actually recommend that you wash your hair with the Redken Glow Dry Shampoo at €14.80 to soften the hair; leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing. Follow this with the stretch test to give you an idea of what your hair needs. If it is very stretchy it needs protein, so opt for Kerastase Masque Force Architecte €38 which is a treatment mask for weakened and damaged hair. It targets the fibre at the core to repair and strengthen from within. If there is no movement then it needs more moisture, so opt

for Kerastase Masquintense €38, an intensive nutritive treatment which delivers optimal nourishment from root to tip leaving your hair replenished with softness and shine. Finally, you need to invest in hair maintenance. Never before has it been so vital to use Olaplex at home. Strengthen and recondition dry, damaged and brittle hair with the Olaplex Hair Perfector No.3 €45 Don’t give me any bulls**t that you don’t have a spare 10 minutes to apply the treatment before you shampoo. In reality, you don't have the time not to.

Blow Me!

I have been sent a Dyson Supersonic hairdryer to review. Look at me - I am on the fast track to becoming an ‘influencer’. Yeah. right! So far I love it. The Dyson technology allows for faster, more precise drying, while producing minimum noise, due to acoustic silencers. By measuring the air temperature 20 times every second, it controls heat distribution to reduce damage and protect your hair. In a nutshell it’s a lot more efficient. The hardest thing to get used to, as a pro, is the size because it is so compact. However, the more I get used to it, the more it feels like an extension of my hand. Dyson Supersonic €399,00. www.dyson.es

Out of Africa

One of my long time clients, the gorgeous Marianne Steneholm, had been invited to an African themed party and asked me to come up with something fabulous for her hair. Not one to turn down such an invitation, I put my thinking cap on. Her hair was too fine to cane-row so I suggested we went for a turban. It was a real learning curve, (thank God for YouTube!) but once you get going, it’s actually very similar to working with hair. It took team work, but between myself, Marianne and Tina from reception we just about nailed it. Now let me tell you what I did discover; a turban can hide a multitude of sins. If you pull it a certain way it will give you a mini facelift. Sadly, Marianne is the last person who needs any kind of lifting so I couldn’t put my new found expertise to use, but for those of you who do need a little help in that department, I recommend you try a turban before jumping under the knife.

WHO’S IN WHO’S OUT

The Marbella side of paradise We attended…

The fabulous launch of Virginia Macari’s Paradise collection for Summer 2017 by Sintillate at Nikki Beach. The international luxury swimwear designer, who has made Marbella her home, unveiled a series of must-have beach cover-ups, statement bikinis and elegant one-piece swimsuits in her trademark luxurious fabrics.

We admired…

The designs that have been constructed to enhance and sculpt the female silhouette. And the timeless style of the pieces with their clean lines and innovative textiles that adapt to all body types.

We were thrilled…

To watch British fashion model Chloe Lloyd on the catwalk. She has appeared in Vogue, Elle and Cosmopolitan, as well as for the Maybelline and Bodyshop brands, so it was exciting to see her walking for Virginia Macari in Marbella.

We loved…

The canapés and refreshments provided by Nikki Beach Marbella and the wonderful atmosphere at the show; all the guests were very impressed by the swimwear collection and the venue and nobody wanted the party to end.

Congratulations and a big thanks to…

Virginia Macari for yet again creating such divine designs, Sintillate and Nikki Beach Marbella for being brilliant hosts.

An exclusive property portfolio party We attended…

The amazing party hosted by Skandia Mäklarna and boutique residential developers Coliz & Murphy to celebrate the release of the new collection of two luxury villas in the heart of Las Brisas, Nueva Andalucia and a one-of-a-kind penthouse in Puente Romano. Some 250 real estate agents attended the event and were delighted by what they saw.

We adored…

The Villa Roma, which is one of the villas in the collection. It was the best place to showcase an experience of indooroutdoor living is at its finest. Our hosts said: ”We think that Villa Roma truly is an entertainment home, for the individual that enjoys throwing parties or gettogethers, which is what we wanted to manifest with this great party.” We’d have to agree it’s perfect for parties.

An Ibiza legend lands in Marbella We attended…

The spectacular opening party for El Chiringuito, the well-established Ibiza brand at the Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa. This new venue is perfectly located on the beach and guests enjoyed the sea views, the elegant sun loungers and the amazing cocktails. All accompanied by celebrity DJ duo Bedouin.

We adored…

The stunning dishes served at El Chiringuito’s. The menu created by French chef Jèrome Palayer includes Lobster Risotto, seared tuna fresh from the wood fire grill, sea bass cooked in sea salt crust or a Nebraska entrecote. El Chiringuito aims to serve honest, great tasting food and we all agreed they have succeeded.

We admired…

The decorations of whitewashed wood, spacious sofas and picturesque palm trees as did all the other guests and everybody was of the opinion that this is an excellent addition to the that brand that launche din Ibiza in 2009 and has since then become one of the island’s top beach clubs.

Congratulations and a warm thank you…

To the team at El Chiringuito for a wonderful evening and to the Puente Romano for adding yet another top class venue to its fantastic selection of places to relax in style.

Grooving on Up We attended…

The amazing 80s concert at the Puente Romano, produced by Crazy Music. Everyone arrived anticipating an evening of great tunes and an opportunity to relive the glory days of 80s music, and we don’t think anyone was disappointed.

We danced…

In the aisles to the fantastic Billy Ocean who had a string of R&B hits in the 80s, including Caribbean Queen, When the Going Gets Tough and Get Outta My Dreams. Other acts included Heather Small from M People whose incredible vocals filled the night, and Right Said Fred who performed their unforgettable hit – I’m too Sexy. They were supported by local artist Paul Maxwell, who was as ever a great opener and who set the vibe for the evening.

Congratulations and a big thanks…

To Crazy Music Productions for putting together such an inspired concert and making it possible for the audience to enjoy the 80s all over again.

Give me the Night Photos by Johnny Gates/My Guide Marbella

We attended…

The Crazy Music Productions’ George Benson concert at the Puente Romano. The legendary singer-songwriter, who is now 74, returned to Marbella once again to give all his fans here another outstanding performance.

We loved…

George Benson’s smooth style and his rapport with the audience made us all feel as if he was playing for a somewhat large group of his personal friends. He didn’t disappoint anyone by leaving out any of his greatest hits, including Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love and Turn Your Love Around. The atmosphere was electric and at the end of the evening, it felt too soon to be going home.

We can’t wait…

For the upcoming Michael Bolton concert at the Puente Romano on August 9-10.

Congratulations to…

Crazy Music Productions for managing to get George Benson back to Marbella – we loved him.

La Sala Super League at Santana We attended…

The latest round in the tournament and you could say it is hotting up - both the weather and golf. Some 100 golfers turned up to play in the July sunshine on a course that is in fantastic condition. We were very glad of the on-course Gin & Tonic bar, which provided very welcome refreshments.

We congratulated…

David Hawthorne, the individual winner and Team Pinker who took the team prize. They were given their prizes at La Sala where we had all retired to for canapés and drinks.

A big thanks to…

The La Sala team and to the sponsors HiFX, Golfriends, Jackson Grundy, The Barber Club and Speed Financial Solutions. Happy Anniversary Fm Consulting We attended…

The spectacular party held at La Finca Concepción to celebrate the 27th anniversary of FM Consulting. We were treated to an incredible evening of entertainment and exquisite refreshments of cocktails, cava and canapés provided by Lepanto.

We listened to…

Speeches from FM Consulting’s CEO Fausto Martinez Villa, General Director Angela Schouten, Executive Development Director Juan Jesús Martinez Villa and Marbella Tourism Council, Miguel Luna Rodriguez. FM’s most valued agencies received awards and Mr. Martínez reminded us all that the firm’s strong foundations were the secret of its success on the coast.

We loved…

The amazing band who performed all the classics and the extraordinary violinist. And we all applauded the acrobat with a giant hula hoop and there were other performers disguised as waiters who suddenly did magic tricks or acrobatics and took us all by surprise.

Congratulations and a big thank you…

To FM Consulting for putting on such a great party. We wish you every success with your with your 3 new releases: Terrazas de Cortesin Seaviews, Cortijo del Golf and Mirador de Estepona Golf - you are a great asset to the Costa del Sol.

In the Pink We attended…

The opening party for Lash Crowd, the trendiest new beauty bar in Puerto Banús. We were stunned by the spectacular decorations that included a wall of flamingos, fluffy lamps, geometric motifs and its beautiful pink palette throughout, which makes it a tranquil feminine retreat.

We admired…

The original artworks on the walls and tested the comfy sofas and funky cushions whilst pouring over the exceptional menu of beauty treatments. The team have truly created a welcoming atmosphere where you’d enjoy hanging out with your friends while enjoying some beautification.

We enjoyed…

Talking to the friendly staff and taking part in the photo-call they had arranged against a backdrop of flowers forming the LC logo. We also loved the pink champagne and the music from both a DJ and saxophone player.

Congratulations and a big thanks…

To the Lash Crowd team for hosting such a wonderful party and we wish you every success.

An Exceptional Marbella Residence We attended…

The open house event hosted by FOC Design in Cascada de Camojan where we were able to explore a spectacular residence for which FOC has provided the interior design.

We were wowed…

By the impressive entrance hall with its cascading glass ball pendants dangling like stars and the gravity-defying glass balustrades that seem to hang in the air. We also admired the open plan layout and the pure luxury of every detail in the house, including the sensor-operated LED lights in the custom-made walk in wardrobe in the master bedroom.

We admired…

The home cinema, spa and gym, the exterior showers surrounded by lush tropical plants and the secret roof terrace that you can access by a lift that starts in the basement stopping at each floor along the way. There was so much to take in that we had to take another walk around this fabulous residence to make sure we hadn’t missed anything.

Congratulations and a big thanks…

To the FOC team for organising this opportunity to see the finest residence in Marbella. You have excelled yourselves!

Forged in Fire

SOCIETY visits Messeg Gallery in Marbella’s poligono and discovers its treasure trove of sculptures by Nimrod Messeg, a master of forging metal.

T

he Messeg Gallery in Marbella’s poligono is only a short stroll from the town’s iconic arch at its eastern end and is easy to reach on foot from its central shopping area. And, if you’re having lunch at the beach, visiting the gallery is a pleasurable way to round off the afternoon. The gallery is open to visitors from 10am-2pm and from 3.30pm – 7.30pm, Monday to Friday. It has two floors of impressive sculptures and each one of them is a unique piece.

About Nimrod Messeg

Nimrod is an Israeli artist and the son of a painter and a poet, both highly respected in their fields. He settled in Marbella in 1999 and pursued his love of creating artistic sculptures in metal and it is this work that is bringing him international attention. You will find Messeg’s trademark sculptures in galleries in London, Lisbon, Paris, Amsterdam and Dubai, as well as in his gallery in Marbella.

Traditional techniques

Nimrod explained how his technique differs from many other sculptors working in metal. He uses ancient forging techniques, welding, power hammering and a more modern plasma torch to achieve the most delicate representation of the female torso. The lace-like motifs of his women are filled with flowers, butterflies and spirals that defy the brutal strength of metal to deliver an ethereal sense of fragility forged in fire. It is evident that Nature and its myriad natural forms and motifs is a major source of inspiration for his work and he also travels regularly to refresh his vision of the world around him and bring new insights to his work. He uses iron and every piece is unique. He uses different finishes, such as lacquering in white or black and polishing to achieve a refined silver appearance. Rusting is another favoured finish and this creates a dramatic look that suggests a modern antiquity.

110

MY INSPIRATION COMES THROUGH THE TECHNICAL PROCESS. I DON’T ALWAYS START WITH A COMPLETE VISION; I HAVE AN IDEA AND THAT DEVELOPS AS I WORK WITH THE METAL.

Skill and Inspiration Visit Messeg Gallery

You get a more perfect sense of his skill when you visit the Marbella gallery. The dark walls and subdued lighting display the sculptures in a way that makes you fully realise his mastery of technique. I asked him about the inspiration for his pieces and he revealed, “My inspiration comes through the technical process. I don’t always start with a complete vision; I have an idea and that develops as I work with the metal.”

But, you don’t need to be a sculpture park or a gallery owner to enjoy and acquire a stunning sculpture by this increasingly collectable sculptor. You can visit the Marbella gallery during its opening hours to browse the art works, but it is better to make an appointment when you want to talk to Nimrod about what you’re looking for and pricing. Talking of which, his prices range from €3,000 to €60,000; there is something for all budgets here. He can advise you on how to present the sculpture in your home, make a plinth if you want your work standing, or demonstrate how to turn some of them into wall art.

Going Public

He is also keen to take his work to another stage – that of large pieces for public places. He said, “Making large-scale sculptures requires a more structured approach, because it is technically difficult.” He illustrated his point with a photo of him up a ladder working on a five-metre tall sculpture. Having seen some of his outdoor sculptures it is easy to see why sculpture parks in the UK are interested in showing his work and why he is recognised as an important artist by international galleries.

It was such a pleasure to visit the Messeg Gallery and finally meet the sculptor whose work is widely admired in Marbella. I encourage you to visit it as well and discover the work of an artist whose works are forged in fire and for whom fire is this “powerful source of creation provides me with a deep connection to life and nature itself.” Address: C/. SOCIETY takes you on a tour of the latest FOC Design project

HOME COUTURE

T

he dictionary definition for the word house is “a building for human habitation”. A dwelling, a place you eat, sleep, recharge, exist. There are no words in the English language (nor any other for that matter) to define ‘Serenity’ in Cascada de Camojan, a stone’s throw from the centre of Marbella. From the moment you arrive at the gate it is clear that this property is in a league of its own. The imposing entrance hall can be seen from outside through slats of perfectly aligned wood through which cascading glass ball pendants dangle like stars, emitting soft ambient light. Passing through the large front door you are met with clean lines, open spaces and millimetre perfect finishes everywhere you look. Stairs to the left seem to rise up forever and gravity defying glass balustrades appear to hang effortlessly alongside them, allowing a feeling of light and space to continue throughout. Crystal chandeliers adorn the walls above custom made consoles finished in a delicate metallic paint.

117

HOME COUTURE

The ground floor offers a beautiful open plan lounge/dining suite. The lounge is decadent and designed for complete relaxation, with comfy sofas covered in soft textured scatter cushions and complimented by two stunning throne style armchairs by esteemed brand Munna, plus a TV wall with a remote controlled biofuel fire that ensures residents will be cosy all year round.

perfect balance between a top of the range modern kitchen and a glamorous hub of the home. Leading out on to a wide terrace overlooking the garden and swimming pool, there is more eating/entertaining space as well as access to the garden. This floor is host to a large en-suite bedroom, a luxury home office and a large picture window looking out onto the sizeable driveway, gardens and front gate.

Separated by a wall of beautifully framed limited edition artwork, the kitchen is everything it should be in a house of this stature. Modern units constitute two sides, floor to ceiling windows occupy the other two and, in the middle, an island made of solid oak

PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN A MODERN AND A GLAMOROUS SCHEME. The first floor offers the most stunning master suite, even before crossing the threshold. The double width sliding doors are dressed with huge hammered metal handles by UK designer Philip Watts which, when opened, disappear into the walls leaving a grand opening into a very opulent space. The oversized velvet headboard sets the scene with elegant glass pendants by Penta hanging either side, opposite which is a custom made walk-in wardrobe with space for both ‘him’ and ‘her’ to fill. Sensor operated LED lights illuminate the space as you enter and at the end is a full height mirror, making this already large area seem as if it goes on forever. Around the corner is a bright and welcoming open plan bathroom with Calacatta walls, glass framed walk-in shower, large beautifully lit ‘his and hers’ vanity unit and a stand alone bath with views across the garden. This floor contains two more large ensuite bedrooms which both boast luxury exterior showers surrounded by lush exotic plants creating the feeling of a five-star resort. The generous size of all the bedrooms in this property adds to the overall feeling of luxuriousness.

HOME COUTURE

Underneath the entry level is a large basement area complete with home cinema, bar, gym, spa and another en-suite bedroom. The cinema and bar area come to life with the various lighting options that have been installed, including a backlit bar as well as hanging iridescent hand blown glass pendants. The cinema has a huge corner sofa providing ample seating and another biofuel fire. The entrance into the spa is across a modern bridge with a wall of stone to the right, over which water cascades down into the lap pool below. Beyond the pool the vast spa area stretches the entire width of the house and includes a sauna and a steam room, large round daybeds dressed with cushions and views across the garden. One of the best features of this house (and worth saving until last) is the incredible secret roof terrace. A lift which begins in the basement bar/ cinema area ascends to take you up to this rooftop heaven. Boasting two comfortable built-in seating areas, a mahjong style, low-to-the-floor lounge with glass balustrades, a large mosaic hot-tub, dining/cooking area, bar and cinema, this is one house very much geared to entertain. Most of the décor is elegantly white with hints of sky blue in the soft furnishings and there are views all the way to the sea from the elevated hot-tub. At night this area transforms into another space entirely as the well planned lighting takes on

THERE IS A NEW SPECTACLE IN EVERY DIRECTION YOU CARE TO TURN AND IT’S EVERY BIT AS DREAMLIKE AS IT SOUNDS. a personality of its own. The mahjong lounge area has also been finished with two custom made Krion coffee tables which turn into works of art as lights from within shine through the semi-opaque surface revealing ornate and dramatic mandalas. The jacuzzi and LED lighting around the banquette seating can change colour to suit your mood and there is absolutely no reason to leave this solarium fit for celebrities; with its outdoor bathroom, barbecue, bar and integrated fireplace, we think it might be

difficult to get rid of your guests at the end of the evening! It’s fair to say this ‘house’ is a stunning space that has been meticulously planned and well thought out in every area possible – and with luxury firmly in mind. There is a new spectacle in every direction you care to turn and it’s every bit as dreamlike as it sounds. This is one place of which it can certainly be said that you really have to see it to believe it.

TORQUE TALK Our in-depth motoring review

122

TORQUE TALK

MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE

MCLAREN 720S THE MCLAREN 720S IS SIMPLY THE BEST

123

TORQUE TALK

W

hen I first saw the new McLaren 720S at a private viewing prior to its official Geneva unveiling, I was instantly fired with genuinely excitement by its looks and technology. Driving it simply confirmed the visual advances it makes over the already impressive 650S. This is the first time McLaren has replaced a complete model line-up, in this case the Super Series. However, although the 720S is an all-new car it is not actually a direct replacement for the outgoing 650S. Instead, it establishes its own base line somewhere between the 650S and the 675LT in its balance on road and track, but with even more power than the latter. And yes, there is room for an even more track-focused version. Put succinctly, McLaren are not stuck in the ‘more of the same’ rut that most other supercar manufacturers seem to be. This manifestation of out-of-the box lateral thinking is a direct result of a management that strongly supports the creativity of their designers and engineers, encouraging them to explore the boundaries of the possible. It is this company culture that helps McLaren skate to where the puck will be, rather than where it has been. McLaren brought the first production MP4-12C to the event as a static exhibit, and it looks very dated alongside the new 720S. When you consider that the 12C only entered production in 2011, the strides McLaren has made in both design and engineering terms in the interim are simply astounding. This is the mentality of a world championship winning Formula 1 team at work. The 720S project began in June 2013 and was ready for production in March 2017 when the covers came off at Geneva. That is just three-and a half years from clean sheet of paper to signing off, which is about half the time it takes a large manufacturer to develop a new car.

124

TORQUE TALK

In the metal, or carbon-fibre to be precise, the 720S looks different from stem to stern. Up front the most distinctive feature is the ‘eye sockets’ that combine air intakes with the lights in a form follows function way that has never been done before. As McLaren Automotive chief designer, Rob Melville explained to me at Geneva, “Rather than having big, drag inducing air scoops along its flanks, the 720S uses laminar flow and boundary layer effect to channel air between the glasshouse canopy and the door area to create ram air for the engine intakes. This makes for a cleaner look while keeping air spillage and drag to a minimum.”

It is no surprise to learn that 25 to 30% of the company’s turnover is directed back to research and development. In parenthesis, Mercedes-Benz only allocates 10% of its admittedly much greater turnover to this cause. While their 2016 sales of 3,200 cars worldwide is a 99% increase on the year before thanks to the availability of new models, McLaren have no intention of playing the volume game. They are self funding and nicely profitable at this level, and will have £1 billion invested by 2022. McLaren’s management also feels that relatively small production numbers

give the brand a cache of exclusivity that they feel is very important. The last thing they want to be is ubiquitous or the default choice, as this is a slippery slope when it comes to value retention. Despite spectacular performance that whips the likes of the Ferrari 488 and Lamborghini Aventador S, the 720S has also been given careful thought to make it the most practical mid-engined supercar that has ever roamed the earth. Thanks to the strength engendered by the new Monocage II carbon-fibre tub, which is 18kg lighter than before and

The exceedingly strong yet slim A-pillars deliver enhanced rollover protection yet allow for better driver visibility. There is extra glass in the rear three quarter planes that provide good over the shoulder lines of sight for both driving and parking. Lower and slimmer sills ease ingress and egress from the cabin compared to the 650S. In the cabin, the 720S continues McLaren’s futuristic, elegant and highly

ergonomic control layout, but with some new twists. The most fascinating of these is the instrument pack, which folds to the horizontal in Track mode or at the touch of a button to display only the most pertinent information like speed and engine revs. New driver aids include 360-degree camera coverage, which aids the enhanced physical visibility. When you are not listening to the engine in full battle cry, the dynamic and musical B&W high-end audio system is a evolution of the one introduced on the 570S calibrated for duty in the 720S. The new twin-hinged dihedral doors have been designed to open upwards to 80-degrees in a way that significantly reduces the amount of lateral space required in a parallel parking situation by 155mm when open. In addition, these doors are cut into the roof, Ford GT40 style. Ultimately, without the thickness of a conventional front-hinged door to

contend with as well, this arrangement provides clear advantages in a tight parking situation. Another practical aspect is the capacious 150-litre front luggage bay, which is large enough to swallow two airline cabin bags and some smaller soft items. A further 210 litres can be stored in the cabin behind the seats. Combined, this is enough for a weekend away if you pack sensibly.

THE 650S WAS ALWAYS RIGHT UP THERE WITH TOP FIVE FASTEST SUPERCARS IN OUTRIGHT PERFORMANCE. THE 720S IS IN ANOTHER LEAGUE AND IS AS RAPID AS THE 675LT

Add 720hp at 7,250rpm, with 770Nm of torque at 5,500rpm from the latest M840T incarnation of McLaren’s twin turbo flat plane crank V8 and you have a recipe for outstanding performance. The 0-100km/h benchmark falls in 2.9 sec, with 200km/h coming up in just 7.8 sec. The quarter mile post is reached in just 10.5 sec and top speed is 341km/h or 212mph. Braking is equally impressive, and it takes just 30m to stop from 100km/h and 122m from 200km/h.

Setting off from our hotel in suburban Rome, it was clear from the start that the superior visibility provided by the bubble canopy of the 720S was a huge advantage in town. No longer does the typical mid-engine supercar tunnel vision syndrome intimidate the driver, and as long as you are cognisant of the cars physical width, the good all-round visibility is confidence inspiring. Emerging from oblique junctions for instance, you no longer feel you need a spotter. It all makes a huge difference to the cars practicality as a daily driver. The 650S was always right up there with top five fastest supercars in outright performance. The 720S is in another league and is as rapid as the 675LT, if not the P1 when it really gets going. A great advantage this car has over all its rivals is the fact that it is lighter. Tipping the scales at 1,283kg dry, which is 18kg less than the 650S, it puts clear space between itself and the Audi R8 V10, Ferrari 488, Lamborghini Huracan and Aventador.

SPORT DELIVERS CRISPER TURN IN, LOWER ROLL AND IN THIS MODE THE CAR MORPHS FROM A STEAK KNIFE INTO A SCALPEL; THE PERFECT INSTRUMENT FOR DISSECTING A CHALLENGING ROAD. Although this 3,994cc dry sump V8 is fundamentally a development of the engine used in the 650S and 675LT, 41% of its components are new, making it in effect a different engine. Central to this is the displacement increase from 3.8 to 4.0 litres. The turbochargers are new, as are the crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods and cylinder heads. The optional sports exhaust is 30% louder when its bypass valves are wide open, but even the standard exhaust now has a reasonably convincing note in full battle cry.

128

McLaren’s war on turbo lag continues, and the new motor is even snappier in its response in high gear, low boost situations. When you are in the right gear and cooking with gas the cars acceleration is simply astounding, its combination of low weight and a mighty torque curve conspiring to provide an ‘afterburner’ effect that would keep a jet fighter jockey feeling right at home. The 720S is still a rear-wheel-drive car, and with this extra power and

TORQUE TALK

torque in play its preponderance to light up its big rear tyres is even greater now. Thus, I occasionally found myself breaking traction in second gear when accelerating hard in a straight line on a dry road, something I had encountered with the 675LT as well. The tyres are the latest 245/35ZR19 and 305/30ZR20 Pirelli PZeros, wrapped around 9.0J x 19 and 11.0J x 20-inch alloys. Pirelli Corsa trackday rubber is an option. Such is the rate of tyre development, these new PZeros are claimed to be even grippier than the old Corsas used on the 650S, and

they have good durability on track, and better comfort and longevity on the road. Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard and they are powerful, with good pedal feel at all speeds. The active suspension uses new double wishbones, and 12 additional sensors for the Proactive Chassis Control II system that controls the damping is now predictive compared to the reactive system used before, and is the result of a five-year PhD study at Cambridge University. Make no mistake, the low speed secondary ride is firm even in Comfort mode, but improves with speed. You can also feel the cars tremendous structural stiffness that provides such a good platform for the suspension. While the handling noticeably sharpens up in Sport mode, even Comfort provides good responsive for fast road driving. Sport delivers crisper turn in, lower roll and in this mode the car morphs from a steak knife into a scalpel; the perfect instrument for dissecting a challenging road. As the the 720S has far too high limits all round to be playing

129

around on public roads, McLaren thoughtfully provided the challenging 4.08km long Autodromo Vallelunga where we could really extend the car and probe the outer limits of its abilities. These abilities are quite astonishing, especially in track mode. Reaching terminal speeds of close to 250km/h on the main straight, I needed just a lift before entering the gentle left kink where you need to settle the car in fourth gear and a gentle dab on the brakes before committing to the fast right hand sweeper that is exited on full noise. This defines your speed down the next straight towards the near 90-degree right hander at the end. In the tighter bends the 720S shows great poise under hard braking, its 675LT style rear wing flipping up to provide stabilising aerodynamic downforce over the rear axle. Turn-in is superb, especially under trail braking, the car rotating in beautifully, its tail following the front end in cleanly and all of a piece. With that big hit of torque in mind, you don’t want to be too greedy with the

130

throttle on the way out, and easing in the power as you unwind the steering provides the optimum balance of grip and velocity increase, with those big, sticky rear tyres keying nicely into the tarmac to rocket the 720S out of the bend. You can feel what the front and rear ends are doing all the time thanks to the excellent steering and instinctive seat of the pants feel, and they always work in tandem. A new feature that has been added to the suite of electronic driver aids helps you to drift if you so wish. More than that, you can alter the settings for more or less help, thereby allowing your confidence window to grow with practice. The McLaren Super Series has always been as much about track driving as well as every day usability, so it is no surprise that a Track Telemetry function has been added that uses external and interior video cameras and telemetry from the cars sensors to map a driver’s track session for subsequent analysis as a training aid.

From its decently sized front luggage compartment to its excellent ergonomics and visibility, it is clear that the McLaren 720S has been designed for an ease of use that has escaped mid-engined supercars up till now. The flipside of the coin is simply astonishing raw performance that can only be convincingly beaten by the likes of the Bugatti Chiron at over six times the price. On the subject of sales the 720S is going gangbusters away from the starting block. The first 400 cars were sold at Geneva, followed by 1,000 orders, so all of 2017’s production is already accounted for. Make no mistake, the McLaren 720S moves the game on in terms of aerodynamics, chassis, engine, and ergonomics. It also looks futuristic in a class where some quite spectacular looking cars are somewhat more conventional in their approach. A tree is known by it’s fruits, and from where I stand McLaren has rewritten the rule book in so many ways that their new 720S is simply the best all-round supercar out there right now.

ell, he didn’t actually, but it caught your attention, didn’t it? But actually there is some evidence that George Washington did. He produced cannabis plants as a cash crop and may have dried and smoked the female flowers. He notes in his diary: “…Began to seperate (sic) the Male from the Female hemp…” The evidence is hazy, but it is possible that he was seeking to treat his chronic tooth aches. Eventually, of course, he ended up with a wooden set of dentures, which probably solved his problem. Columbus enters the picture on account of the fact that were it not for the humble cannabis plant, he would have had no ropes and cables for his little fleet. So even

if he didn’t smoke hemp, he certainly needed it. In the United States it is now illegal to grow any form of cannabis plant, and both hemp and marijuana are lumped together and classified as Schedule 1 drugs. This is, of course, somewhat absurd. “Cannabis sativa sativa” (hemp) is grown for industrial purposes in more than thirty countries around the world, with France leading the field with 70% of the world output, and China ranking second with 25%. “Cannabis sativa indica” (marijuana), with a poor fibrous stem, nevertheless produces female buds which are used for a variety of medicinal and recreational purposes. The two plants are from the same cannabis family, but they are entirely distinct strains. Indeed, hemp not only produces vastly lower amounts of the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol, but also produces a high concentration of cannabidiol which neutralises the psychoactive effects. Even if he did smoke a joint, Washington would have experienced very mild effects as possibly did the inhabitants of Scythia whom the Greek historian Herodotus (480 BC) reported would often inhale the vapours of burning cannabis seeds for their pleasurable recreation.

“HEMP WAS ONE OF THE FIRST PLANTS TO PRODUCE A USABLE SPUN FIBRE SOME TWELVE THOUSAND YEARS AGO.”

“IN JAPAN THE GROWING OF CANNABIS OF EITHER VARIETY IS STRICTLY BANNED, WITH TERMS OF IMPRISONMENT UP TO FIVE YEARS FOR POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA.” One of the reasons why there is now a blanket ban on all forms of cannabis in the United States is the fact that in 1937 the Marihuana Tax Act was passed. It has been suggested that this was designed to destroy the US hemp industry, as the powerful William Randolph Hurst feared that advances in the manufacture of paper produced from hemp would destroy his extensive interests in wood based paper, whilst Andrew Mellon, the wealthiest man in the States at the time and the US Secretary of the Treasury had invested heavily in the DuPont family’s development of nylon. (The DuPont family contest this claim.) Whatever the effects of the act, the United States used imported hemp extensively during the Second World War to produce rope, uniforms and canvas, and even issued a film “Hemp for Victory”.

Such use has an ancient history behind it which still has echoes today. In Japan the growing of cannabis of either variety is strictly banned, with terms of imprisonment up to five years for possession of marijuana. Hemp growers, however, are exempted from

the ban on account of the fact that the plant historically produces robes for Buddhist monks and loincloths for Sumo wrestlers. This exemption may be slightly less than watertight as the use of marijuana in Japan has doubled in the last decade. But hemp was one of the first plants to produce a usable spun fibre some twelve thousand years ago. The Chinese used it to make clothes, shoes, ropes and paper. From that date it has additionally been used to produce paint, insulation, food and animal feed. It can also be used as “hempcrete” and hemp lime in the construction industry. Hemp pulp is used in the manufacture of cigarette paper. And given the current problems with global warming and plastic pollution it also produces biodegradable plastic and a biofuel. When in 1892 Rudolf Diesel invented the diesel engine, he intended it to be powered by “a variety of fuels, especially vegetable and seed oils”. At present hemp is being used to clean contaminants at the Chernobyl nuclear

“AT PRESENT HEMP IS BEING USED TO CLEAN CONTAMINANTS AT THE CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR DISASTER SITE BY WAY OF A PROCESS KNOWN AS PHYTOREMEDIATION”

for hemp seed and hemp oil for use in foodstuffs like Granola. Hemp seeds are a rich source of B vitamins and dietary fibre, together with other minerals and polyunsaturated fatty acids. 100 grams of hulled hemp seeds supplies 586 calories, and provides 54% of the daily requirement of protein. Hemp once also played a pivotal rôle in the British penal system. Hemp rope is prone to rotting in water, and so the ropes used in ships were protected by tar. This not only gave rise to the expression “Jack Tar” to describe a sailor, but when the ropes were no longer of

“THE UNITED STATES IMPORTS SOME $500 MILLION WORTH OF HEMP PRODUCTS EACH YEAR TO SATISFY A GROWING NEED FOR HEMP SEED AND HEMP OIL” use there was indeed “money in old rope”. It was sold off to provide caulking for ships. Before this could happen, however, the fibres had to be separated. Prisoners serving hard labour would cut the rope into lengths, then beat them with a mallet. These lengths were then given to prisoners serving lesser sentences who had to uncoil, unravel, unpick and shred the rope into fibres. This was known as “picking oakum”, and the work was monotonous, unpleasant, and wreaked havoc on fingers and nails. Girls under 16 had to pick half a kilo a day, whilst boys of a similar age had to produce a kilo. It was then sold at the modern equivalent of £400 per 50 kilos.

disaster site by way of a process known as phytoremediation, which clears radioisotopes. The plant also has its uses ecologically in agriculture. It grows to a considerable height and produces a dense foliage. It likes a high planting density. When therefore it is planted it discourages weed growth in the soil, which enables growers to avoid the use of herbicides, and which, when harvested, affords them a cash crop. And quite apart from any industrial value, hemp leaves may be eaten in salads or drunk as an infusion. Rather oddly, despite the ban on growing the plant, according to the Hemp Industry Association, the United States imports some $500 million worth of hemp products each year to satisfy a growing need

Pack Instinct with George Gough George Gough has been training dogs on the Costa del Sol since 2013. He has completed the Training Cesar’s Way course and was personally taught by Cesar Millan, one of the most famous names in canine behaviour training. George provides assistance to dog owners whose pets need help, from severe behavioural challenges to more modest everyday struggles. He’s here to share his knowledge with Society readers and answer your questions.

Honour the Dog

W

hat happens when we start emotionally seeing our dogs as children, spouses or friends? The short answer – we stop honouring the dog’s essence. I can say I was totally guilty of this when I got my first dog Spike. I wanted him to be my best friend. In many ways we had that relationship, but it didn’t help me with what I actually wanted to achieve. In those early days I was able to give him friendship and companionship. I was someone to play with and someone to give him his food, but I can’t say I was able to make him feel safe. He was my best friend but that was limiting for Spike. You see, dogs aren’t equipped to deal with our emotional baggage. The moment we start seeing our dogs as

friends, surrogate children or partners, we stop honouring dogs for being dogs. This way of building a relationship with your dog may feel comforting to you, but it doesn’t help your pet who has a very different idea about the world around him, compared to our view of it. Dogs need leadership, guidance and structure to really do well in our world and be great dogs. It might take having to learn some new skills and habits, but once you get the cogs in motion, there is no limit to what you and your dog can achieve. It is the animal in the dog we were drawn to in the first place. A being that lives in the moment. A being that has not been affected much by modern society, at least not in the way we have. Dogs give us that that sense of getting back and giving back to nature. In my opinion, companionship is easy, leadership takes work, but that work really pays off for both you and your dog. NEVER FORGET - HONOUR THE DOG

134

going on a 10-mile hike every day. This dog needs more structure in his life. Structured walks at least twice a day minimum, where you provide all the direction and protection the dog needs. Also, mental challenges, find the toy, sniffing out the treats, getting food out of a toy etc, stimulating exercises you can do at home to drain this energy. Short training sessions with your dog, even twenty minutes a day, can meet their need for attention from you and give you a chance to work on issues whilst developing your relationship with your dog. Along with calm assertive leadership, you will diminish the unwanted behaviour.

Q:

Kobi likes to play with rocks. To the point he has ground most of his teeth down. He will play with other toys but as soon as we go into the garden, the beach or on a walk he only wants rocks. Nothing interests him once he has a rock and obviously they are everywhere we go.

Your Canine Corner George answers your questions…

Q:

My dog has a problem whenever he meets new people. He nips them. Not a full on bite but he just softly nips the person’s leg and barks at them. As long as the person is stern with him he will stop in about half hour. If they are scared he never stops, i.e. two years later he still does it to our cleaner as she is terrified of him. He is part podenco and part bull terrier.

A:

OK, so your dog actually has a couple of thing going on. First, the reason he’s nipping people is because he’s being allowed to nip people. The only thing that has worked is when the other person corrects your dog, which is not their job or responsibility. YOU need to teach your dog impulse control and to avoid interacting with humans until you give permission for the dog to move forward. If your dog just gets excited around people, then its best that they never touch him and he is NEVER EVER allowed to approach or nip them. Remember if you don’t address a problem you usually reinforce it as being acceptable. Your dog must learn to be calm around all humans. Then with proper training you can slowly start to re introduce people to your dog with a new attitude. One that says,” Mum isn’t going to take any monkey business so I’d better watch my behaviour around these people”.

A:

This is obsessive behaviour, which isn’t healthy in any dog, so you really need to put a stop to this because dogs need their teeth. You have to teach him to be calm around rocks; this is going to take close supervision and on leash training. As distractions haven’t worked in the past, it may be time for corrections. Also, it might be an idea to muzzle him whenever he’s off leash to prevent further oral damage. if any dog’s issues cause them physical harm or threaten their existence, remote collar training can often be the solution, however, please consult a professional prior to using. Remember, calm assertive leadership increases the power of any tool you use with your dog.

Q:

Our dog came from the pound and was extremely traumatised. He likes to run round and round circles when we let him into the garden and also creates a circuit that he runs non-stop and keeps barking. So much so that the garden has racetrack marks. Even if we are sitting at the pool he will just run round us in a big circle. Any idea how to stop this?

erdejo makes for one of the most delightful white wines of summer and offers an alternative to those looking for a break from Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. Verdejo has been grown in Rueda for about 1,000 years and is believed to have been introduced during the 11th century by Christians living under Moorish rule, though where they found it is unknown. Rueda is in northwestern Spain in the larger Castile and Leon region, occupying the high plains northwest of Madrid, inching toward the northeastern corner of Portugal. It is a mediumsized region, compared with others in Spain, concentrated mostly around the town of Rueda, just south of the city of Valladolid. Rueda has a reputation of being one of Spain's best white-wine regions, producing dry, mediumbodied varieties of Verdejo an aromatic grape which can evoke notes of citrus, stone fruits and tropical fruits, herbs, anise, a floral essence, almonds and even a touch of bitterness.

D-Wine Advice

Verdejo can best be enjoyed with soft cheeses like fresh Mozzarella, Goats Cheese, Chicken, Fish and Shellfish – as long as it isn't teamed with a heavy sauce. You can also pair it with dishes that combine fresh herbs like Basil, Mint, Parsley and also fresh Tomatoes and Olives and vinaigrette dressed salads. Its crisp acidity and 'fruit forward' flavour makes it a great partner. This is a wonderful wine for the summer and is guaranteed to bring a green freshness to your palate, with a lot of lovely acid balanced by just a bit of nuttiness.

A Master Chef in Marbella

Nobu Matsuhisa shook up the restaurant world in 1993 with the first Nobu – now his latest addition to the global brand is at the Puente Romano, Marbella.

T

he Puente Romano Beach Resort and Spa has established itself as an exceptional gastronomic destination. This year it has surpassed itself with the addition of a new dining venue that is world famous – Nobu. This is a name lit in lights across the restaurant world, one that people aspire to visit, not just for the food, but also just to be able to say they have dined there. Shortly after the opening of Nobu at the

140

Puente Romano, the celebrated chef, Nobu Matsuhisa, visited Marbella and SOCIETY had the honour of interviewing him about his career as a chef, about being co-owner of a global network, his signature dish and other ingredients.

What inspired you to become a chef?

I stared to dream about becoming a chef at a very young age and you could

say that I persisted until I achieved my dream. Apart from the culinary side of being a chef, I also wanted a career that would offer me the opportunity to explore the world and that has also happened. I have lived in a number of countries and cities, and of course, with the development of Nobu I get to travel even more. Meeting many different people in an assortment of cultures is where I get a lot of my inspiration.

I PACKED A BAG AND WITH ONLY $25 IN MY POCKET FLEW TO LOS ANGELES WHERE A FRIEND INSISTED I OPEN ANOTHER RESTAURANT. SO, THAT’S WHAT I DID.

How did you arrive at the idea of blending Japanese cuisine with South American ingredients?

Partly it was due to circumstances. When I was working in a restaurant in Tokyo one of my customers, who was a Peruvian of Japanese descent, invited me to open a restaurant in Peru. That was in 1973 when I was 24. When I arrived in Peru, I couldn’t find the ingredients I had been using all my life in Japan, so I had to improvise with what was available locally, and that’s how my Japanese dishes with Peruvian ingredients was born. I borrowed ideas from Peru, such as ceviche and lots of different salsas, and started cooking Japanese food using these traditional South American influences. It has turned out well for me, because Peruvian food is very popular right now and other chefs, like Spain’s Ferran Adriá and José Andrés are also working with various techniques from Peruvian cuisine.

COSTA CUISINE

You had a restaurant in Alaska. How old were you when you opened it?

Oh yes, the restaurant in Alaska. I was 29 years old and the restaurant was only open for 50 days. It burnt down because of an electrical fault. In just 50 days my dream was over and all my money was gone. I really wanted to kill myself and I tried because I felt that I had nothing left. I couldn’t eat and all I could think about every day was “How can I end this?” It was an awful time, but then I heard my daughters playing, they were only

aged two and one at the time, and they were laughing and just enjoying life. That woke me up. You could say that my family rescued me. From this experience I learnt to appreciate the importance of patience and love. I went to Japan, packed a bag and with only $25 in my pocket flew to Los Angeles where a friend insisted I open another restaurant. So, that’s what I did.

Tell us something about the sake you use for food pairings. In the West it is traditional to use wine for food pairings and for cooking. In Japan we use sake. At Nobu we only use Hokusetsu brand of sake – the name means ‘North Snow’. Nobu has a great relationship with the company that produces it, and they have many varieties that can be used for cooking or drinking.

INCLUDING MARBELLA AND IBIZA, NOBU NOW HAS 35 RESTAURANTS ON FIVE CONTINENTS

Can you tell us something about your partnership with the actor Robert de Niro?

He used to visit my restaurant ‘Matsuhisa’, which was on La Cienega Boulevard in LA. Then he invited me to open a restaurant in Tribeca in New York City. We opened the first Nobu in 1993 and it was so well received we’ve continued to keep opening more Nobu restaurants. He understands my philosophy and knows what I want to achieve. He comes to every restaurant I open and does the sake ceremony. We’re great business partners and good friends.

Managing a global group of 30+ restaurants must be exhausting; what do you do to keep fit and how do you relax?

Including Marbella and Ibiza, Nobu now has 35 restaurants on five continents, and this requires me to travel for 10 months of the year. Finding time to relax isn’t easy, but I built a house in the mountains outside Tokyo, which is near some hot springs, and I always try to spend at least two weeks there every August.

Why do you think your Black Cod and Miso has become a signature dish that the whole world knows about? The idea came from something that is really traditional Japanese - miso. A long time ago refrigerators were not a common thing in Japan and Japanese people needed a method to conserve fresh fish. So, they marinated it in miso, sea salt and soy sauce. I wanted to give this tradition a new twist, so I marinated black cod in miso for three days and cooked it! It has a very soft, sweet flavour and my diners really liked it! Robert de Niro absolutely loved it the first time he tried it and it still his favourite dish on the menu. In fact, we actually put that on the menu, “Robert de Niro’s favourite.” We had so many good reviews of it that it has to go on the menu of so every Nobu restaurant. Although, now you’ll find that many other restaurants are also serving it.

Why is Marbella the perfect location for a new Nobu? I love Marbella mainly because of the great produce available here; the olive oil, tomatoes and fresh fish. Also, it’s a beautiful location and my neighbour at the Puente Romano is Dani García and he is one of my best friends, so I’m looking forward to this experience!

Thank you chef Nobu! We’re delighted you chose Marbella.

It was not until the day he sat in meditation in Swami Sivananda´s personal room in Rishikesh, in Himalaya by the side of holy river Ganga, he had the courage to teach in public. Being in the river of energy his master left behind filled his heart with strength and courage to share the experience that he had accumulated throughout the years.

Creating the Heart Healing Retreat has been a joint effort in trying to offer a gentle gateway into peoples hearts. It is a Retreat that we personally would attend if given the chance. I always think that clients that have experienced what we do describe us the best.

What people say about it: you so much for providing such a fantastic retreat. It was structured “ Thank yet relaxed at the same time. As a big meat eater I wasn’t sure how I would cope with a vegan sugar free diet. I needn’t have worried. Bettina’s culinary skills exceeded all expectations. The food was well prepared and beautifully presented and incredibly tasty. I also loved the snacks - in particular the mango mousse. I didn’t miss meat once and been converted to a plant based diet at home. The yoga was also to an equally high standard. Ajan pushes you to make the most out your ability and with 90 minutes in the morning it was a great start to the day. His massage was also fantastic and a great way to relax. And finally, but not least Mark the spiritualist healer. A constant smile on his face. Words can’t express how moved I was in the circle ceremony and in my reading. I genuinely feel a huge cloud has been lifted and will try to follow his loving philosophy in all aspects of my life moving forward. I can’t recommend the experience enough and know that I will return. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this life changing experience.

— Jane 2016 Join us in September this year and experience everything that beautiful Bali has to offer incorporated on your spiritual journey. Walking amongst beautiful never-ending green rice fields, meditating in an open air yoga shala and experiencing the magic this spiritual island has to offer.

... Much Love

WITH GREAT SERVICE, A FANTASTIC VIBE AND LOVELY, FRIENDLY PEOPLE THIS HAS BEEN OUR BEST DAY OUT THIS SUMMER. If you’re lucky enough to have a weekend off in this busiest of seasons, here’s a hot recommendation; get yourself down to Mahiki Beach as soon as you possibly can. You won’t regret it.

S

ala Group has been responsible for some of the most successful venues on the Coast, from La Sala By The Sea to Aqwa Mist, the clubbers’ nightclub which has welcomed stars such as Craig David, Stormzy, Tyga and Chris Brown so it’s no surprise that this latest project has already proved such a hit with visitors and locals alike. However stressed you might be on arrival, it won’t be long before you find yourself tuning into the relaxed ambience that is so much a part of Mahiki Beach. Having originally opened in Dover Street, London in 2005, where it quickly established itself as a leading celebrity watering hole, it made sense to introduce the Mahiki experience to Marbella. Conveniently situated on the beachfront at Avenida Duque de Ahumada, this is a beach club to end all beach clubs.

Of course, if your idea of heaven is a comfortable bed on a beach you can easily be accommodated but, when all that sun worshipping begins to pall, you might like to test the menu. Take our advice and start with a cocktail – these stunning creations (some of which are perfect to share) really get the party started with a bang. Since we all agreed that the late Roger Moore was never

better as Bond than in Live and Let Die we were tempted by Baron Samedi’s Brew, which was advertised as, “A vicious voodoo blend of Mahiki Grog, Jule’s Honey Cream, fresh Lime, Bitters and a hint of Absinthe topped with Homemade Ginger Beer.” This was delicious, but had a kick like a mule. To be perfectly frank, much of the late afternoon and early evening took on a slight blur afterwards. We also tried the Big Kahuna (“Mahiki Grog, Strawberry, Mint, Lime and Demerara Syrup and topped with Fizz”) which was wonderfully refreshing and an almost traditional Piña Colada (“Mahiki Grog and Mahiki Coconut blended with Coconut Cream, fresh Pineappple and a hint of fresh Lime, served in a whole pineapple”). Here’s a handy hint if you like a cocktail or two; arrive early enough to give the menu a thorough workout. Now that we were all feeling slightly light-headed it was time to find a table and have a look at the menu, which was impressively creative. We hadn’t really thought about what a fusion of Spanish and Polynesian cuisine would look and taste like, but having visited Mahiki Beach we can definitely recommend it. Of course, we just had to try the Grilled Chicken Satay which was served with a selection of dipping sauces and was

juicy and delicious. We also ordered the Blackened Shrimp on a bed of Avocado and Cucumber and the Prawn and Sea Bass Ceviche with Mango and Avocado, both of which proved to be the perfect accompaniment on this very hot evening. The very creative and appealing menu has obviously been constructed with great care, the dishes a range of the traditional and the innovative. When it came to the main course, we had heard that the Slow Roasted Leg of Lamb served with Dauphinoise Potatoes, Sautéed Seasonal Vegetables and Fresh Mint was not to be missed, so two of us decided that we would order this sharing dish between us. All the rumours turned out to be completely true; the lengthy cooking process ensured that the meat was tender and packed full of flavour and eating it on the beach added a novel note to this twist on a traditional roast dinner.

The third member of the party chose the Samoa Green Curry with Chicken, which was served with Steamed Rice and declared herself impressed by this variation on the more usual Thai curry. The Mahiki Beach team is dedicated to delivering a flavour of Polynesia and some of the dishes reflect this brilliantly. When you visit, you really should make sure that you have enough room to test drive the desserts. These are a dream for anyone with a sweet tooth and we were more than up for the challenge, deciding that the Banana Spring Roll with Dark Chocolate and Baileys Cream sounded spectacular; we weren’t disappointed. The Red Berries Cup with Mascarpone and Greek Yoghurt was the perfect choice for the diner who feels that he or she might have gone overboard on the main course,

since it was a light confection with the berries providing bright bursts of flavour. Chocoholics should look no further than the Chocolate Mousse with Brownie and Pistachio, served with Orange Sorbet – this is a real celebration of that much loved substance and the addition of the sorbet added another dimension. Just delicious! If you are looking for a place where you can enjoy a day at the beach, sample some of the best cocktails on the Coast and eat gorgeous food while watching the sun setting on the Mediterranean, then make Mahiki Beach your next destination. With great service, a fantastic vibe and lovely, friendly people this has been our best day out this summer. Mahiki Beach by Sala Av. Duque de Ahumada, 2, Marbella, Tel. 951 89 93 76 mahikibeach.com
