GET AWAY

With You Wedding season has very much begun. CONFETI Magazine attended not just one wedding show, but three in a week! Other than The National Wedding Fair (Birmingham UK) and The London Bridal Show, we were lucky enough to be invited to attend the very first Wed Away Destination Wedding show at the Royal Horticultural Halls, London.

W

ed Away, which will be returning next year under the name of Bride Lux, focuses on the many couples from the UK and Ireland who are now choosing an overseas wedding, which is a rapidly growing market. From wedding planners and scenic venues to destination photographers, it had everything couples could possibly need to kick-start their plans for tying the knot abroad. There were also some fantastic seminars, aimed at making planning much more straightforward. Many countries participated, with contributors from Greece, India, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Malta and of course, our very own (and 14 CONFETI

favourite destination) sunny Spain. Weddings abroad have increased in popularity in recent years, with more than one and a half million people per year traveling overseas to a wedding. Reliable weather, the quest for something different and the ‘more for your money' factor are all playing a part in this trend, with the average wedding overseas coming in around 60 per cent cheaper than the UK average. The event welcomed upwards of 2000 guests in slightly more than one day. With one in five UK couples now marry-ing abroad, it's no surprise that it was so popular and we’re sure all the couples in attendance enjoyed themselves

as much as we did. Delicious canapés were served, as well as complimentary gin from Bloom Gin. The music and enter-tainment set the tone perfectly and some of the beautiful wedding décor was sure to inspire many brides and grooms. Confeti especially loved the fitting Vespa scooters and our journey to the train station in a themed tuk-tuk! Overall this was a highly successful event and as saying ‘I do’ abroad is becoming bigger all the time, we are sure that this event will continue to grow. So keep your eyes peeled for next year's Bride Lux Destination Wedding Show. To find out how to customise your wedding week on the Costa Del Sol, see pages 80-81!

The Future of Bridal Style W

unique visions to the mix. We felt quite privileged to be at the launch of some very talented designers’ 2018 collections and to see the direction that bridal fashion is taking. Not only did we mark the presence of some of the industry’s biggest players (Alan Hannah, Caroline Castigliano,

Catherine Deane, Eliza Jane Howell, Jesus Peiro and Stephanie Allin to name but a few), we were also introduced to some fresh new talent which, we feel sure, will soon become as familiar to brides as the more established brands and fashion houses. We were especially thrilled to see the work of Adam Zohar, Amy

Mair Couture, Blossom Veils & Accessories, Emily Victoria White, Florence and Raishma, all of whom we will most definitely be hearing much more in the future. Not only did the more established brand names have some extremely exciting designs planned for 2018, the new names will ensure that the future of

bridal gowns and accessories are in safe hands. Whether you prefer to place your trust in a name you know or are hoping to be introduced to a new designer who is producing the kind of gown that is exactly what you’re looking for, then The White Gallery London is where it all kicks off. The next few months will be a very interesting time to visit a bridal shop and one thing we can say with confidence is that brides-to-be have plenty to look forward to. whitegallery.com This is a trade only event, and is not open to members of the public. Confeti at the Fairs

The London

Bridal Show

The London Bridal Show is the first international bridal buying event of the year and Confeti’s Features Editor, Sinéad was lucky enough to attend this three-day extravaganza. With more than 100 exhibitors and 200 collections, it is one of the UK’s biggest trade fairs. Retailers from across the globe come together to meet top designers and manufacturers to create valuable business partnerships. Here’s what Sinéad had to say about her experience there and the inside scoop on this year’s event.

RETAILERS COULD BOOK A ONE-TO-ONE SESSION WITH AN EXPERT TO OBTAIN TAILORED ADVICE

n true British style, it was pouring down with rain as I made my way to Olympia, so it was lovely to enter the the exhibition centre and see a sea of wedding dresses. Sparkles, flowers, ivory, tulle - I felt instantly welcomed and was in bridal heaven! I couldn’t wait to dive in because the London Bridal Show offers buyers not only wedding dresses, but bridal shoes, accessories, bridesmaid dresses, veils, lingerie and much more. As I made my way around, I struck up conversations with several bridal houses and was amazed by how many international retailers were there. I spoke with people from Turkey, Ukraine, America, Italy, France and Belgium, to name but a few. There was a lot of serious business taking place but there was always someone on each 18 CONFETI

stand that took the time to show me their most prestigious dresses and offer information about the latest collections and bridal trends. I was wowed by some of the wedding gowns, as there were some truly showstopping creations and I looked forward to seeing the designs come to life on the catwalk. One of the touches that really stood out for me was the variety of activities taking place, for example the seminar programme. Kicking off on the first day, this involved a panel of industry experts who shared their knowledge and

answered questions from the floor. One of my favourites was from Warren Knight, who took to the stage with his inspiring presentation, ‘Winning new clients with social media’: this was very interesting and relevant, with social media fast becoming the new way to boost your business. On top of this (and new this year) was the Business Advice Clinic. Retailers could book a one-to-one session with an expert to obtain tailored advice and, needless to say, this was a huge success. Entertainment, bridal awards, VIP Lounge, you name it - there was so much on offer.

THE LONDON BRIDAL SHOW JUST KEEPS GETTING BIGGER AND BETTER EVERY YEAR

With complimentary refreshments, lunch and even champagne, I was ready to take my seat at the aspect of the show that I had been anticipating the most, the runway shows. This year’s catwalks featured gowns from designers Casablanca, Dando London, Diane Legrand, Donna Salado, Eternity, Gino Cerruti, Jasmine, Julija Bridal Fashion, Mark Lesley and NIXA. There were definitely a few trends that stood out and will be big for next season, such as lots of 3D florals appliqués, heavy embroidery, swooping backs and larger than life ball gowns finished off with regal crowns instead of veils. Girly blush pinks are definitely still on trend. What I loved the most was the variety of styles; there really was something there for everyone and every design was bold and beautiful in its own way. Wedding dresses truly have evolved. I saw so many daring and unique gowns and we should all celebrate the fact that designers are pushing all the boundaries and coming up with unique ideas to make brides feel special on their wedding day. After seeing more bridal gowns than I thought possible, my three days sadly came to end. Needless to say the feedback from most exhibitors was that the event had been a huge success and the London Bridal Show just keeps getting bigger and better every year. As for me, I’m already looking forward to the next one, which will return to London Olympia from the 4th-6th March 2018.

THERE WERE DEFINITELY A FEW TRENDS THAT STOOD OUT AND WILL BE BIG FOR NEXT SEASON, SUCH AS LOTS OF 3D FLORALS APPLIQUÉS, HEAVY EMBROIDERY, SWOOPING BACKS AND LARGER THAN LIFE BALL GOWNS FINISHED OFF WITH REGAL CROWNS INSTEAD OF VEILS

Fancy

T

his season’s trend alert is all about the fringing. A bridal fashion that, yes, has been around for a while but one that we still see popping up in brand new collections. It’s a firm favourite among many bridal designers; the Roaring Twenties bought us this Gatsby-inspired look and it isn’t going away anytime soon. What we love about tassels and fringing is the way it adds a bit of extra movement and sparkle to a dress, as you sashay down the aisle or dance the night away. If you’re a Spanish bride or getting married here in Spain, Confeti loves that fringing has a touch of flamenco about it and is a great way to tie your wedding in España into your bridal look. Be a real Señorita - here is all the inspiration you will need in some of Confeti’s fancy fringing favourites!

Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week

t’s that time of year again when bridal fashion lovers are in a frenzy! One of the biggest fashion events in Europe, the 27th Annual Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week, took place recently and CONFETI was lucky enough to attend the three days of runway shows, complete with a backstage pass. Twenty-five of the biggest internationally renowned designers showcased their latest collections for 2018, from Spain’s very own Rosa Clara to Cymbeline Paris to name but a few. In the words of the director Estermaria Laruccia, we were indeed “carried away by the passion for fashion” and loved seeing designers “transform dreams into dresses and fashion into art”. This year’s slogan was ‘Unexpected Dreams’ and Confeti was not disappointed. Fira Barcelona Gran Via was the chosen venue for this bridal extravaganza and, as always, the ambience of the ‘Village’ chillout area next to the runway was complete luxury. Everything was

dressed in bridal white with hints of gold and live music played on a grand piano also helped to set the scene. With so much attention to detail from Lindt Chocolates and even a power station to charge your phone, Confeti felt right at home.

of versatile styles presented different trends to suit every type of bride. With so many statement shows, it’s hard to say which one was our favourite. We loved the hippy chic ‘Peace and Love’ vibe from Yolan Cris, with mod rocker music, a giant LOVE sign and models with loose, unkempt hair. The 2018 collection BOHO CHIC was inspired by the Mediterranean essence of a city like Barcelona, its people and culture. It is

Down to the important part - the fashion! So what stood out this year? A reccurring trend was definitely the bridal cape and we also saw lots of unusual accessories: masks, crowns, hats, Indian style headdresses, detachable skirts, we couldn’t get enough. Each designer committed to a running theme throughout their show and it helped to bring the stories behind the collections to life. A vast range

Pronovias was in charge of putting the finishing touch to the fashion shows (a running tradition) and they really closed with bang! Previewing their Atelier Pronovias 2018 collection in a different location, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, expectations were

reminiscent of the folk universe and the Zingaro style of the 1970s - bohemian bridal dreams! We also loved the fancy frills and tribal vibe from Sophie et Voilà. This collection is structured in three different lines, with unconventional cuts, controlled volumes and noble fabrics for stylish brides. The minimalist looks reflect the strong feminine women of the 2000s. They chose to have a live tribal band performing alongside the models on the runway, which was very powerful. We adored the usual sophistication and glamour from the ‘New York’ collection by Morilee Madeline Gardner (who’s featured in this issue’s Designer Profile) and the ‘Le Masque’ collection from Carla Ruiz was also truly magical.

high. This was a jaw-dropping setting, complete with a fountain for a backdrop and the decision to hold this runway event in the evening also added a touch of drama. The new collection reflects contemporary elegance, beauty and romance. Just like a summer night, brightness and transparency make their appearance in several looks, pieces that ooze femininity and offer a touch of luxury and sophistication. Confeti especially loved getting an insight into the backstage action this year, seeing the dresses and models up close and snapping selfies and post-

show celebrations. However our hightlight of not only the shows but probably the year, has to be the Galia Lahav runway show and getting to meet her in person backstage and at her private ‘Couture Cocktails’ event. The preview of the new 2018 collection, ‘Victorian Affinity’ was just breathtaking and the photos don’t do it justice. There was a lot of sparkle, her statement backs and tulle skirts, with a twist of gowns reminiscent of the English Victorian era. Her private ‘Couture Cocktail’ event was held on the rooftop of the luxury jewellery store, RABAT Joyas on Passeig de Gràcia. Draped in flowers, fairylights and with champagne flowing, we were in heaven. Our loyal readers will know that we wrote an exclusive editorial here in Marbella featuring Galia’s gowns in our Autumn 2016 issue. We were thrilled to be able to hand over a few copies to Galia and her team, which went down a storm. A whirlwind of bridal fashion and soirees, Barcelona Bridal Fashion week was, all in all, a fantastic trip and Confeti left feeling inspired. Future brides can rest assured that the collections for 2018 are spectacular. A huge congratulations to everyone involved in such a successful event held right here in Spain. As for us, we cannot wait until next year. Adéu for now, Barcelona!

I KNEW THAT BEING A FASHION DESIGNER WAS MY CALLING WHEN…

I had my very first Hollywood glamour moment. Watching old movies with my mom and being in complete awe of the starlets of the past was such a special turning point for me. From there I learned to sew at the age of 12, and started to make fun and flirty evening gowns. Safe to say it was full steam ahead!

I SPECIALIZED IN BRIDAL GOWNS BECAUSE…

Lace, lace, and more lace. Did I mention LACE? The beauty and texture of a delicate lace really makes me feel alive as a designer. Weaving the magical patterns of a Chantilly or French lace into a gorgeous wedding gown really encapsulates my passion and inspiration for fashion.

MY PERSONAL STYLE IS... Sophisticated and tailored with a touch of flair. A little edginess never hurts either!

MY BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE… Knowing I’ve brought a bride to tears of happiness! There’s nothing quite as exhilarating as the feeling of seeing a glowing, gorgeous girl enjoying the happiest day of her life in one of my designs.

TRENDS THAT I FEEL WILL BE POPULAR IN 2017… Are all in the details - think appliquéd flowers and laces over soft Chantilly laces. Sweeping, soft tulle ballgowns will be the perfect mix of classic romance and modernism. I’m a big fan right now of the sexy straps that support our new sculptured necklines. Sheer bodices with removable linings are going to give brides two looks for the wedding day. So many lovely options, it’s hard to choose a favourite.

Curious by

One Day Bridal is an Australian bridal house established in 2011. Inspired by a love of fashion and a passion for artistry, each creation is designed and handcrafted in their studio in Melbourne. CONFETI came across their ‘Blessed are the Curious’ Collection from the Autumn 2017 line and we immediately fell in love. The creations embody the stylish bride, effortlessly blending fashion and bridal. This particular collection is ideal for brides planning a beach wedding here in Spain, with romantic yet unique creations. A One Day bride is a confident, creative individual who loves a good time and is looking for a gown that is a less bridal and a little more modern. Less is more but, still, a statement must be made. The gowns are handmade from superior quality fabrics with custom designed beading. The team believes that ‘the dress is everything’ and their gowns break all the rules of bridal, of which CONFETI is a huge fan. These stunning bridal dresses can be found in Australia, USA, Canada and the UK. We hope our readers enjoy swooning over this breathtaking editorial from One Day Bridal as much as we do!

This issue we meet nail technician, Ariela Ungurean from Reflections Salon. Fluent in English, Spanish and Romanian, she has spent the past six years sharpening her skills as a manicurist. Now based in Marbella, she is already making waves with her amazing freehand nail art designs. This issue she will be taking you through the top trends for bridal nails for 2017. Whether you opt for subtle soft pink or bold and glittery, Ariela will help you totally nail your wedding day manicure.

PERFECTLY POLISHED FINGERNAILS At Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2017, ladylike neutrals were the look of the day. Cream and pearlescent lacquer were glossed over almond and oval-shaped nails, giving an instant lengthening effect. This combination leaves the fingers looking soft and feminine - picture perfect. ALL IN THE DETAILS I love adding texture to my designs and this year will see a surge of popularity for textured bridal nail designs. At first glance, the manicure looks like simple pale pink and white, but when you come closer, you'll notice gorgeous, subtle textures. specific area of the body that needs the most attention, a bride-to-be can choose from two available routines; either the backless, or sleeveless programme. Regardless of which is chosen, the client will benefit from achieving total body fitness from body carving cardio circuits, P.U.S.H training, honeymoon ab circuits and the Steady State Cardio training.

esigned specifically for the bride-to-be, the L.A. Bride Body Transformation System is a simple, downloadable training programme designed to help sculpt and tone the parts of the body accentuated by a wedding gown. From start to finish, the programme takes 12 weeks and will guide a bride (or client) step-by-step through each workout. Depending on the

BACKLESS Gown Workouts A BACKLESS gown is super sexy. You’ll want to fit into it seamlessly and, by seamlessly, I mean a smooth contour along the sides of your body and a bodice that isn’t too tight. The L.A. Bride Body: Backless Programme will sculpt and tone the areas visible when wearing a style like this. The exercises are created to target certain muscles to strengthen and tone. The body will naturally tighten as calories are burned and weight is lost through good nutrition and specific training.

Here’s my favourite exercise for a sexy back. FRONT AND SIDE RAISE Equipment Needed: 2-5lb dumbbell

1 Stand tall with your abdominal area braced 2 Raise one dumbbell to the front and one to the side simultaneously. Both to shoulder height.

3 Lower the dumbbells. 4 Switch. Repeat 12-15 times each side.

SLEEVELESS Gown Workouts Choosing a sleeveless gown will not only show off your arms but your shoulders will be on show too. I designed each training day to work the arms, shoulders and upper back, not only to sculpt and tone, but also to make arms and shoulders stronger than ever. Don’t be afraid of bulking up by using weights during your transformation because the rep scheme and repetition count is targeting lean muscle mass and sexy sculpted arms.

Check out my Number One exercise to achieve the arms of your dreams. CURL AND PRESS Equipment needed: 2-5lbs dumbbells

1 Stand tall with your abdominal area braced.

2 Curl a dumbbell to the shoulders, turn the elbows out. 3 Press the dumbbells directly overhead. Repeat 12-15 times.

Sinead and Josh With only four months to go now until the big day we are really getting excited! We have been finalising all the fine details that should make our day as special as possible, so here are our tips for future couples tying the knot. We have booked a villa in Nueva Andalucía for Joshua and myself, not to mention some of my English family. It is in a great location with amazing views and, of course, a lovely outdoor pool, jacuzzi and barbecue. There are lots of fantastic villas to rent in 44 CONFETI

Marbella, so what you go for really does depend on your budget. If you’re a bargain hunter like me I would try sites such as Airbnb, although we actually booked ours through España Holidays. We can’t wait to turn our wedding into a week-long celebration and make the most of friends and family visiting us from other parts of the world. Talking of accommodation, we have booked our honeymoon suite at the beautiful Castillo de Monda, a rustic Spanish castle up in the mountains of Ronda and conveniently down the road from our wedding venue.

I have chosen my fantastic stylist, Paul from the Bardou Salon in Marbella to do my wedding day hair. I always leave Bardou feeling glamorous and like a new woman, so I know that I will be in good hands on my wedding day. They offer a variety of packages for brides and bridal parties here in Marbella and I would recommend them

“WE CAN’T WAIT TO TURN OUR WEDDING INTO A WEEK-LONG CELEBRATION AND MAKE THE MOST OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY VISITING US FROM OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD”

very highly. We have also had some cake tasters from Sweet Things By Fi and I have to say cake tasting is one of the best parts of planning a wedding! They were all so delicious and we love our final selection of flavours. Fiona is brilliant at creating personalised cake visions. I was amazed by how much detail goes into the design, taking aspects from our wedding day as inspiration and we can’t wait to see the actual cake.

“WE HAVE ALSO HAD SOME CAKE TASTERS FROM SWEET THINGS BY FI AND I HAVE TO SAY CAKE TASTING IS ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF PLANNING A WEDDING!” Joshua has finally purchased his wedding suit from the Hugo Boss store in Puerto Banús and was very impressed by the whole experience. He says that the staff members were extremely attentive and couldn’t do enough for him, so I would advise other brides to send their grooms there. This is not just for the fantastic service, but the quality and material of the suits are great for a wedding in the sun as they are very light and sure to result in grooms who are less hot and bothered.

“OUR INVITATIONS HAVE JUST BEEN SENT OUT. TO PUT IT MILDLY, IT WAS A LONGER PROCESS THAN I THOUGHT!” Our invitations have just been sent out. To put it mildly, it was a longer process than I thought! There is so much etiquette involved with writing invitations that I didn’t even know existed. It can change depending on if you are getting married in a church or not, if your parents are paying for the wedding and even formalities that can affect what punctuation can and can’t be used. I changed our draft several times before I was finally happy. So do undertake a little research quite early on in your planning process and decide what works best for you as a couple. We also had the extra work of translating the invites into Spanish for our Spanish guests. Nulki Nulks stationery gave us a bespoke design involving our wedding colours and our personalised wedding logo, created by Joshua’s dad, Steve. Our logo

Elle and Jack afterwards, which we’re all looking forward to. Everyone’s accommodation is now sorted; we have friends staying in a hotel nearby as well as at our wedding venue. Everyone’s flights and transfers are booked too. We’ve ordered our cake; we decided on a lemon cake and chose a two-tier white cake with buttercream roses all over and fresh flowers on top.

is being incorporated in different ways throughout the day and it’s a nice way to tie in a theme. I had matte white boxes created with our logo on for the invitations, which I filled with folded gold tissue paper, scented silk petals and finished off with a bow. Elaborate I know, but your invitations are the first vibe your guests will have of your wedding, so I wanted them to be remembered for all the right reasons. We have discussed several décor ideas with our planner, Tara from Fiesta Sol and we’re hoping to pop up to the venue once more soon. We now have decisions to make such as which readings we will have at the church and who will read them, as well as our chosen music for the band and string quartet. We have our wedding course coming up at the church also, so we will update you on what that’s like for future couples hoping to get married in the Catholic church. We have placed our alcohol order from Pepi Montes and are sure that most of it will be consumed! We have chosen a fully stocked bar for the evening and then beers, wines, cava and champagne for the cocktail reception and dinner. The cava we are serving actually won World’s Best Cava, so hopefully our guests

Elle and Jack have been sharing the story of their engagement with us for some time, so we were interested to hear about how their plans for their big day are progressing. It’s all getting real for the pair now! Quite a few bits have been sorted out since the last issue. We’re currently getting our legal preparations in order before we depart for Spain. We’re having a small cere-mony at a venue called Nettle Hill in May with our grandparents who unfortunately can’t come to Spain. We wanted to make the day special for them so we’ve booked an afternoon tea

will love it as much as we did. We were given a complimentary bottle to try, so watch this space. Finally we have bought our wedding bands from Sakata Jewellers in Gibraltar. We decided to make a weekend of it and stayed on the luxurious Sunborn Yacht. Wow, what an experience; it made our trip very special and it is also a wed-ding venue, which would make a unique way to get hitched. Our bridesmaids and groomsmen have also been busy planning our stag and hen do’s which, strangely, have been arranged for the same weekend. Joshua’s is a total

Our entertainment is also organised. We have a Spanish guitarist for the day and a flamenco group as an after-dinner surprise. We thought it would be a nice extra just before the evening party. Our honeymoon has been finalised. We’ve booked a villa in Pollensa, Mallorca. We decided on Mallorca as it was the location of our first holiday together and we have-n’t been back there for almost 10 years. Jack and I will soon be going shopping for suits and rings. We’re still really unsure about what Jack and the groomsmen will be wearing but, apart from that, everything is almost finalised thankfully, as time is flying by and the day is fast approaching!

“THE CAVA WE ARE SERVING ACTUALLY WON WORLD’S BEST CAVA, SO HOPEFULLY OUR GUESTS WILL LOVE IT AS MUCH AS WE DID.” surprise, while I am going to London for a night of fun and, hopefully, a spa day. On top of all of these things we have both joined the gym and started a strict diet so, fingers crossed, we will look in tip-top shape on the day - if we can keep it up, that is! CONFETI 45

We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do. It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had known each other. He then suddenly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I turned around to see what he was pointing at, and as I looked down, a light shone on to the rocks where there was a sign that read, ‘Marry Me?’. I then turned back around to see that Bhavesh had got down on one knee! He told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life and more with me

We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

morning, the blessing ceremony in the afternoon followed by cocktails and the reception party into the night. All were outdoors, the weather was amazing and all this infused with the surroundings and the ‘buzz’ our guests came with made it truly the best wedding, I myself, had ever been to, and I still can’t believe that it was my own. I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

Loveworthy Louise and John threw a romantic wedding in a picturesque villa nestled in the hills of Casares.

48 CONFETI

Branching out John proposed in a little village called Caton where we have a cottage. We like to go for walks here and on the second of January we set off for our walk. Near our cottage is the locally famous old oak tree which dates back to the early 1900s. This is now supported and a ‘successor’ tree has been planted alongside, which has been grown from an acorn harvested from the ancient oak. Here, under the old oak tree, John proposed and said this will always be remembered on our walks in years to come.

the green heart of the Acedia valley in Casares, bordering the natural park. The mysterious

10 minute drive from the main road on the dirt track made us decide to have a secret location for our guests and we arranged transport from their hotels to our wedding and the ‘day after’ party.

Lucky No. 7 We chose Spain not only for the good weather but because it was the location for our first holiday together where we fell in love. The venue we fell for was Villa Bermeja; we viewed seven venues along the coast and every one was lovely but wasn’t quite right. Either the rooms weren’t adequate for our family or the ceremony area wasn’t what we wanted - until the final candidate. Villa Bermeja is a truly magnificent villa, situated in the most beautiful setting, in

The dream team

Sunshine Weddings Spain made everything so easy, picking us up and

taking us to view all the venues, plus all their information and knowledge was excellent. Their

communication skills and attention to detail was second to none.

They covered every aspect, plus more that we hadn’t even thought of and helped us create a memorable day. We cannot

thank them enough. We had numerous guests saying that our wedding day was amazing and the best they have ever been to.

Pure luxury I fell in love with my dress in the first shop I visited, which was Bethany Hannah in Stockton Heath. My dress had a sweetheart bodice in French Alençon lace and a full mesh tulle skirt with a removable Italian taffeta belt with side flower embellishment. My shoes were wedges, due to it being a garden wedding and having to walk on grass. John had all the men’s suits made in Hong Kong and the Kings Tailors team did an amazing job. John took all the men’s sizes with him to get them made.

natural. Alex, our hairdresser, was fab and so lovely and friendly. My mum and mother-in-law also loved meeting her for our hair trial and my bridesmaids looked beautiful too. Alex created a relaxed plaited up-do for my maids, weaving in gypsophila for a slightly boho feel. DIY details I didn’t have a theme and chose things I liked along the way, from subtle colours for the bridesmaids’ dresses to flowers and table arrangements. My invites were multi-coloured, which didn’t give anything away to our guests. The

favourite memories was actually on the morning of the wedding when I looked out of the window to see all the team getting the ceremony ready. The

garden looked amazing with all the flowers and candles. Vows that wow

Padre Peter is a really wonderful character and made the ceremony fun and relaxed. The reading, an excerpt from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, was simply beautiful. We had

the exchange of the Arras coins and my brother did the reading, ‘He Never Leaves the Seat Up’ by Pam Ayres, which made us all laugh. Quike, the violinist, played ‘All of Me’ by John Legend and ‘Without You’ by David Guetta. Keep it natural We chose Talia as our photographer and what an amazing job she did. What

we requested was natural photos of family and guests and the key moments of the day caught on camera without us knowing about it. In

this brief, as in so many others, Talia more than exceeded our expectations and the resultant photos will be treasured forever.

The morning after We had a Paella Party the following day as another way of saying ‘thank you’ to our guests for flying out on our special day. Plus it was a great way to ease hangovers and spend more time with everyone, now that the stress from the big day was over. We will never forget... One of our favourite memories was our first dance to ‘Let’s Stay Together’ by Al Green, with a twist towards the end and Roberto coming from the side of the villa surprising our guests by playing ‘Jubel’ on the saxophone.

We both thoroughly enjoyed the Mr. & Mrs. competition with our wedding shoes which was a great laugh and fun organised by our MC, John’s cousin, James Ainscough. I loved John’s speech and, of course, the surprise honeymoon John had been planning for me.

Five weeks away visiting Dubai, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Boracay and Thailand. I definitely married a good ‘un! 50 CONFETI

Second Chance

Real Weddings

Dawn and Richard met when they were both very young and drifted apart, before fate lent a hand and brought them back together again. The result was a wedding in Spain to celebrate Richard’s ancestral roots.

First attempt Richard and I went to secondary school together in the northeast of England. We were in the same class from the ages of 11 to 14 and Richard first asked me to be his girlfriend at the age of 12. I said “no”! We parted ways at 16 after taking our GCSEs in 2000, going to different colleges and then I moved away to attend university. However, during a visit home in 2009 we bumped into each other in a pub on Christmas Eve, Richard texted me to wish me a Merry Christmas the next day and the messages continued. We

had our first date a few days later and then spent the rest of the holidays together, seeing in the New Year. At the time I was based in

52 CONFETI

the north-west and Richard in the south of England, so we had a long distance relationship for three years until he joined me in the north-west, where we still are based today. He still insists that I am lucky he gave me a second chance!

Richard proposed on a beach in Bucerias in Mexico in the summer of 2015

so we had a good length of time to find the perfect venue but, in the end, the cortijo was booked by September 2015 because we fell in love with it as soon as we saw it. Roots Richard’s grandmother was Spanish and came from Algatocin, a small village not too

far from the venue, so there’s a sentimental reason for our choice. Richard is incredibly proud of his Spanish roots and we had also decided that we wanted to marry overseas because we both love the sunshine and didn’t want a particularly large wedding. Cortijo Pedro Jimenez looked so beautiful online and when we visited in person a year before the wedding we weren’t

disappointed. The views are spectacular and we loved the layout with the courtyard, pool area and front garden, meaning the day’s events could take

place in different areas.

The fact that it was secluded and had no neighbours and therefore no definite finishing time was also a plus for us. Made to measure I completely fell in love with the Israeli designs and had a very clear idea of what I wanted. Every boutique I visited (and there were quite a few!) was a disappointment and

nothing met my expectations but then, completely by chance, I came across a dressmaker online who I then contacted and she made my perfect dress. I knew I wanted a lace and backless dress and something sexy and feminine with a Spanish look to it and Rae, the dressmaker, chose the champagne and blush colour to compliment my skin tone. My bridesmaids wore floor-length blush coloured dresses embellished with sequins and beads with a

cowl back and slit at the back and my flower girl wore a white dress with lace skirt and some embroidery on the top to tie in with my dress. All of the girls looked beautiful and my flower girl looked ethereal. Richard wore a three-piece black Hugo Boss suit with a bow tie and the groomsmen wore black waistcoats and skinny ties for a laid back feel. The personal touch My bouquet flowers were David Austen roses and the bridesmaids had a single rose in their hair but no bouquets and the groomsmen had a single rose buttonhole. I originally wanted peonies but they were not in season - however the roses suited the pastel palette and added to the femininity.

I’d say my theme was feminine and glamorous with Spanish lace, nude pinks and golds. I wanted

the décor to be glam yet simple and for there to be a Spanish influence. The tables featured gold candelabras with flowers to soften the look and the wedding planner added other key pieces around the venue to tie in with the theme.

We had a personalised ceremony with readings that we had chosen and we wrote our own vows,

which featured personal and humorous verses.

Party time We chose to serve Tapas and Paella as our main meal with Wedding Cake as dessert. We opted for Albodigas; Chorizo and Red Onion Tartlets; Tortilla Española; Spanish Cheeses and Meats and then Seafood or Vegetarian Paella. We served canapés after the ceremony and had midnight snacks (Sliders, Spring Rolls and Chicken Pinchitos) on offer too.

Nothing was too much hassle for Toni at Sana Catering and everybody loved the food, even the fussy eaters. Many guests commented on the presentation, variety and service and it was so much better than we’d anticipated!

Our wedding cake was a threetier buttercream cake, decorated with roses on the second tier, the layers comprising orange, chocolate and carrot sponge. Since we chose to marry overseas we thought it only fair to put on a free bar for our family and friends and, needless to say, it went down very well. That’s entertainment We opted for a Spanish guitarist during and after the ceremony and made our own playlist for the meal. The singer, Georgie O’Neill and a guitarist played two sets, including our first dance and DJ Tristan played for the remainder of the evening. We gave guests a soundtrack of our day, truffles and a dark chocolate liqueur as favours and there was also a photograph illustrated by a personalised quote for guests to keep.

Richard wanted a cigar bar for the gentlemen, which they all loved and we also had a sangría bar for guests and organised some shika in the evening. Happy snaps We chose Radka Horvath as our photographer for her natural and informal style. We have yet to receive all of our pictures but the few we have seen are

Another idea we had was to choose a famous quote about love (which we had selected from the movies) from the quote tree and stick it in the guestbook, along with a written message. We put on a lunch for the bridal party and the groomsmen (in separate rooms, of course) on arrival before getting ready. We’re really pleased we did this as it made for a lovely, relaxing day.

wonderful and we are really excited to see them all. Radka

and James made us feel super comfortable on the day and we didn’t realise that they were there taking photos most of the time! The fact that Radka was really excited about photographing my dress was such a lovely feeling and she really did make me feel beautiful. I can’t wait to see what she’s captured! Our guests loved them just as much as we did; they are such friendly people. Favourite moments? Can I say all of it? We really did have a perfect day but, if I had to choose a few moments,

I’d say the exchanging of vows, the first dance and then dancing to our favourite music with our favourite people. Getting

ready in the cortijo with the girls was pretty amazing too and

Ella Megan made us all feel like celebrities! Seeing our ideas coming together with the help of the wedding planner was also very satisfying and made us feel proud. “If I had to do it again I would change…”?

I would have hired a videographer. We really wish we’d had it filmed so that we could relive it all again. What would be your advice for future couples getting married? Make sure your day is about you as a couple and your likes, wants and vision. Don’t be afraid to put your faith in other people, as taking small risks on things really paid off for us. Having

a wedding planner made the whole process stress free; if you have the option, go for it!

A Fairytale Wedding

Sometimes it takes a while to find the right partner but occasionally fate intervenes and the perfect person finds you very early on. When Natasha and Tom announced their wedding plans nobody was even vaguely surprised, so the hunt was on for some mind-blowing venues to add a touch of drama to the big day! Destination Wedding Tom and I met at school and we have been together for 12 years, so deciding to marry wasn’t that much of a stretch really. After attending our first destination wedding in Spain we were sold on the idea and our second (in Bermuda) confirmed that we 100 per cent wanted a wedding abroad. The idea of flying in a few days early to have fun with your guests so, by the time the wedding comes, everyone knows each other was appealing and the guaranteed weather, fantastic food and outdoor venues all added up to equal our ideal scenario. Castles in Spain I always wanted to get married in a castle; it was a childhood dream to have the big dramatic day, so when we visited Castillo de Santa Catalina, a stunning fortress overlooking Málaga Bay we were blown away. Also, coming from the UK, we wanted something unique and original

56 CONFETI

that we wouldn’t be able to find at home, thus providing a reason to ask our guests to make the effort to fly out for our big day.

We also managed to secure the incredible Málaga Cathedral for our marriage ceremony - the ultimate fairytale venue, something I scarcely dreamed of, being such a famous building with so much history. Rustic romance I wanted to keep to a rustic fairytale theme with an essence of old school travel. From the outset, I wanted include gentle elements of travel such as passport invitations, boarding pass RSVPs and a website to match to excite our guests. Given that it was an overseas wedding, we gave everyone 18 months’ notice to sort their travel so we wanted to retain their interest! I worked closely with the incredible Laura from Reviva Weddings to weave a gentle travel theme by the use of

a vintage maps table plan, leather luggage tag favours, travel based sweetie bar and large cocktail centrepieces into the wedding. It looked fantastic and I have since had lots of people contacting me to ask for advice. Pink palette I absolutely love pink and knew I wanted the girls in some sort of blush and, due to the heat and the setting, I wanted something floaty yet comfortable for the girls to be in all day. The flowers

followed the theme, mainly roses to keep with the romantic element and, Spain being a warm country, there was no lack of gorgeous pastels.

My dress was interesting as I had no idea if I wanted a princess dress or a tight, sexy number. Well, of course I wanted both but, given that the wedding started at 5pm, I had to make some hard decisions. Justin Alexander Signature combines the two so that was an obvious choice and,

fortunately, I managed to find a stockist in the UK, which was very lucky as not many places stock this range. Justin’s

dresses are inspired by the 1950s and 1960s but have a contemporary twist. I fell in love with the beading and detail on my dress and, paired with my Louboutins, I felt like a princess.

Shake your booty Music was always going to be a huge part of the wedding. I

have danced since I was young and Tom and I share a huge passion for music. We had the amazing Quike Navarro

for our ceremony and reception drinks and sets from Miss Thang for the evening party. We also had a DJ so we catered for all ages. Everyone was asking

Tom and I to do some sort of rehearsed dance and we made a point of point blank refusing.

However, secretly we were organising a flash mob surprise dance.

This was rehearsed for a few months prior to the wedding and consisted of a mixed group made up of our bridal party and my dancing friends, who sprung a choreographed routine on our guests. It was hilarious to see everyone’s reactions!

Feast for the eyes Our cake was a stack of vintage suitcases topped with a globe and was a visual masterpiece. As far as the rest of the food went. we wanted to give our guests a taste of Spain so made sure that we included a tapas mezze in our dining option. Our personalised leather luggage tags, flip flops and sunglasses favours for our

guests were a nice touch. People love a freebie and the travel theme fitted perfectly into the day.

We chose the fabulous Nani de Perez as our photographer. From the word go, Nani and Antonio were so personable and friendly, yet extremely

professional in their email exchanges. They

didn’t overload us with jargon and it was evident that they were passionate about photography and making sure every single couple ended up with exactly the photos that they wanted from their day. We met Nani and Antonio in May at our wedding venue and we were instantly at ease - they knew exactly what we wanted and it was evident from the vast range of work we had the pleasure of viewing that we had nothing to worry about. We opted for

two photographers and a video package as per their advice and I am so pleased we did.

Our favourite moments were... Natasha: Arriving at our reception venue with my bridesmaids in the morning and seeing them gasp! Then walking down the aisle in the cathedral and, afterwards, the flash mob dance.

CONFETI 57

Tom: Arriving at the square outside Málaga Cathedral for our pre-ceremony drinks. Everyone was blown away by the building and it suddenly dawned on me that I was about to get married! Seeing Tasha walk down the aisle towards me was also a high point. We were dining outside as the sun set and that is probably the most magical moment we have ever experienced. “If I had to do it again I would change...? Nothing about the day itself! We had a few problems with our initial wedding planner but Laura from Reviva Weddings helped us pull off the most perfect day. What would be your advice for future couples getting married?

Don’t rush - the engagement is such an amazing time, so enjoy every second! It all goes so fast.

Love, Around the World Mysterious, geeky and romantic. Joe and I met in a bar in London and we hit it off immediately and started dating from then on. At the time of our wedding we had been together for 10 years of adventure and travel all over the world. The proposal was mysterious, a little geeky and very romantic. We went to the Sydney Observatory, which sits on a small green hill in the middle of the city, overlooking the city lights. There we saw the rings of Saturn clearly through the telescope. We went outside in the cool night air, with a beautiful view across Sydney. My husband talked about our life together and then got on one knee and proposed. Of course, I said, “Yes!” We went for a delicious meal afterwards to celebrate. Destination... Spain We both adore Spain; we love the language, the people, the food, the culture – in fact, everything about it. Organising a

wedding from Australia was incredibly difficult, but I found Faín Viejo after hours of online searching and fell in love with it straight away. We 60 CONFETI

cannot recommend this beautiful venue enough. Ana Zalba, the venue owner was amazing! When we found out they had micro-pigs too we were convinced it was for us. Although we never saw the venue before booking it, it turned out to be even better than the pictures when we arrived. We wanted to go for a rustic, 1920s, fairly relaxed ambience. My dress was predominantly lace and was fitted. The flowers were from the gardens of the venue. Bridesmaids were in pale blue which matched the groom’s and groomsmen’s bow-ties. The groom wore a suit inspired by a 1920s ‘Great Gatsby’ feeling in an oatmeal colour. Animal Antics We provided engraved fans as wedding favours. Our tables were named after animals that we had fond memories of when we were on our travels together. The food was traditional Spanish style with, of course, a jamón cortador. We love Jamón Ibérico! We found our photographer after doing some more strenuous

that finding the right photographer was vital, as we wanted the most important moments of our special day captured as they happened. We

felt like we were in a dream, so seeing it all again highlighted details we would not have noticed and allowed us to enjoy it all over again.

Favourite moments Apart from the ceremony itself, locking eyes with each other when I walked down the aisle and without a doubt, the cuddling of the wonderful, adorable piglets. We had hoped they could be part of our photos and were over the moon that they were part of it.

A Fine Romance Magdalena and Regis’s dreams came true when they said ‘I do’ surrounded by only their friends, family and the Mediterranean.

Crazy in love We actually met on Facebook if you can believe it. Regis spotted me via a mutual friend and we arranged to meet for dinner. We soon realised we had so much in common from a great passion for fitness to a love of travelling and even music festivals. After nearly two years together we were on the second day of our holiday in Dubai when my dream came true. Regi rented my favourite supercar and booked a table on the terrace of an incredible restaurant with view of Dubai Music Fountain. It was breathtaking and I was quite tearful as I have always wanted to see a musical fountain. During 62 CONFETI

the last fountain show Regi went on his knee and asked me to marry him. I was in total shock and I couldn’t believe the ring he was holding out to me. A few months before we had passed a jewellery shop in London and I had pointed out a ring to him that caught my eye. I couldn’t believe he remembered and went back and bought it for me. Never in my life have I felt as special as I did right then. A helping hand We love everything about Spain and always wanted get married by the beach so, after a quick search on Google, I contacted

Scott, the owner of Sunshine Weddings Spain and arranged a meeting, which was the best decision I made.

They were everything we could have asked for and more, super organised and I didn’t need to worry about a thing. Scott gave us many great ideas which resulted in a dream wedding.

From beginning to end there were smiles on my family and friends’ faces and I would love to do it all over again - but only with Sunshine Weddings Spain by my side!

Welcome to paradise

I had seen photos of the Tikitano Beach Restaurant in Estepona and had my heart set on it as our wedding venue. However, the photos didn’t do it justice. When I saw it in person, it was just perfect - situated right by the beach with outstanding views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar, plus a beautiful garden which was perfect for the ceremony. What more could I have asked for? The allure of couture As we were still living in London I decided to buy my wedding

dress there. I honestly didn’t have any idea of what kind of dress I wanted so I decided to visit a wedding expo to see if any of the designers caught my eye. Ritva Westenius did just that. All of their dresses were unique, graceful and suited my style and the fabrics were just wonerful. I made an appointment to visit the boutique and was met by Chenca who is the owner of Ritva Westenius. I chose eight dresses and I love them all but it was the first one I tried on that gave me the butterflies. I had always wanted Christian Louboutin shoes and was so pleased when I found a model with kitten heels, as I wanted to feel comfortable on my special day. For my bridesmaids I chose royal blue dresses from TopToBottom. Regi was also in royal blue and his suit was designed in Puerto Banús. He paired it with a simple white shirt, brown shoes and a Louis Vuitton belt. The power of pretty For my hair and make-up I knew that I wanted to look elegant more than anything. The amazingly talented Maite from Glamorous Hair Marbella created a glamorous ‘up do’ which was finished off with a beautiful diamond hair accessory. My make-up was

done by Liza Mayne and straight away she knew what suited me. These two

amazing ladies made me look and feel perfect!

All floral décor was designed by Virginia Florista. We opted for lots of white flowers with a touch of baby blue detail. The final result was elegant. For the rest of

the décor we worked with Michelle from Gorgeous Event Decoration and I loved her take on our ideas.

Address Book Wedding Planner: Sunshine Wedding Spain sunshineweddingsspain.com He’s all mine Our ceremony was outstanding. The garden at Tikitano was beautifully decorated with flowers. It was simply perfect. Quike played our favourite song on the violin as I started to walk down the aisle. I began to feel very emotional with my dad by my side and then seeing that Regi was feeling the same, made me even more so. I honestly can’t describe the feeling: seeing the set up, hearing the music and being surrounded by my close family and friends - it was a lot to take in. Tikitano is not only a beautiful venue, the food is also superb.

Our amazing wedding cake was created by Omaya from Cake Couture Marbella. I fell in

love with its amazing appearance and then, once I had tasted it, I fell in love with it all over again!

Music is the answer I have to thank Scott from Sunshine Weddings Spain for recommending DJ Fuller,

Saxophonist Roberto Cantero and violinist Quike Navarro. They turned our wedding into a full-on party.

All the guests were dancing until the end and most of the women ended up without any shoes on. That is always the sign of a good night. The best bits... Is very hard for me to choose favourite moments as we loved every single minute of our wedding day and it was

even more magical than I expected.

It's a Family Affair Marie and Ted's families were determined that they should realise how perfect they were for each other and, after a while, their persistence paid off!

Told you so! Our love story is a little different it’s a case of keeping it in the family! My sister and Ted's brother married each other eight years ago and, after more than 10 years of hearing how perfect we’d be for each other, the timing was right and fate intervened. Needless to say we contacted our siblings pretty quickly to tell them that they had been right all along. Of course, since we share such an amazing family our wedding day was a beautiful and special occasion for all of us.

64 CONFETI

Destination Andalucía We are lucky enough to have access to an apartment outside Málaga and we have been using that as a base to explore the stunning villages of Andalucía for years. We got engaged in Spain and when, the very next morning, I stumbled across the Rachel Rose website, it confirmed for both of us that having the wedding of our dreams in our home-away-fromhome was a must-do for us. We visited a couple of venues but Cortijo Pedro Jimenez was the first and instantly we fell in love.

Combined with Rachel’s sense of style, which was completely in tune with what we knew we wanted, none of the other venues really stood a chance! Dress to impress I am only five feet tall, so finding a wedding dress I felt suited me proved to be even more challenging than anticipated.

I decided to resist the temptation to make a huge statement and went for a simple, elegant dress by Watters, which I felt really comfortable in and which I'd be able to

look back on in years to come and still love. Ted bought his suits from Noose & Monkey which included his favourite feature, skull print lining! As we were having a small wedding we decided our bridal party would consist of just us and our brother and sister. I chose a dress for my bridesmaid that could equally have been worn as a guest dress but suited our style and colours perfectly and it really worked. Our colours were based around midnight blue, off-white, soft greys and dusky pinks. Party on down!

We decided to have a dessert table rather than going for the usual seated option. I had our fabulous cake supplier, Sweet Things By Fi, make us some sugar skull cookies for our dessert table as a surprise for my husband - they were so pretty and tasted amazing. As a nod to

our Spanish adventures, we had our fab caterers make us up fresh Churros with Chocolate Sauce, which went down a treat!

Picture this

Radka Horvath was our photographer and I can’t stress how exceptional she was. Radka and her partner, James are such lovely people and incredibly talented to boot. We asked for the majority of our photos to be candid shots as we wanted the whole day to flow naturally and were blown away with the quality of images we received. It was remarkable, considering that we spent the day messing

and joking around when the photographers were doing their thing. The laughter was all caught on film too. We had Salvador from Evergreen as our videographer and we recently received our wedding video and fell in love with our day all over again. It was so worth having our day captured on video as well as being photographed.

Favourite moments We were bridesmaid and best man at the wedding of our sister and brother (also in Spain) so we witnessed and signed their marriage certificate. A very special moment was having them witness and sign that document for us, not having known that any of this was ahead of us all those years before at their wedding. Truly a 'full circle' moment that was destined to be and one we will never forget.

I’ve had an obsession with macaroons since a trip to Paris years ago so it only made sense to contact Ladurée Paris and have fresh macaroons flown in as favours for our guests. This was a real treat as it also meant everyone in the bridal suite enjoyed a macaroon breakfast! We were beyond thrilled that we could have our wedding outdoors from start to finish, so we made the theme Dancing Under the Stars, which encompassed everything from the midnight blue invitations to the festoon lighting we had brought in so we could eat, drink and be merry in the moonlight. CONFETI 65

often. We wanted a day doing all our favourite things, eating our favourite foods and listening to only our favourite music. At the end we felt rejuvenated instead of exhausted, which meant we succeeded in what we set out to achieve. There is no doubt about it, the people buzzing around you on your big day will have an impact on how you feel about the day, so read reviews on potential vendors to get an idea about what people have to say.

We decided to create a 'first look' before the ceremony, where we would steal a moment alone together before everything started and have the photographers there to capture it. It was

such a precious moment walking towards my almost husband and tapping him on the shoulder so that we could have an excited (and tearful!) embrace before we said ‘I do’. We are music lovers so we knew from the start how important that aspect of the day would be. We wanted to remain true to ourselves yet felt a little stuck about where to go to get the type of music we wanted. After

a lot of searching we found the amazing Chica DJs who, unlike some others, were encouraging about working with us to create our dream playlist.

After meeting and being blown away by how passionate they were, we deicded that not having a typical band was 66 CONFETI

perfect for us. We love the idea of the Tunas bands that travel around restaurants in Spain and serenade you during dinner, playing traditional Spanish instruments, so we recreated this by finding Tunas de Málaga and had them play to our guests just after dinner and before dessert. Everyone, young and old, loved this part of the evening and we were happy that we included this element of live music that represented the wonderful country in which we were married. What would be your advice for future couples getting married? Don’t be afraid to do things a little differently than the norm. Don’t think a big wedding is your only option. If, in your heart, you’d love an intimate wedding with only the people closest to you, then be true to yourselves and do it! The Ultimate

Love Story

Manuela and Francesco enjoyed a romantic wedding with Andalusian-inspired accents. All good things come to those who wait Francesco and I had known each other for a decade before we realised we were actually soulmates. We were both born in Ticino, the southern part of Switzerland and spent a lot of time together as friends, but then I moved to Zurich to study special needs education. In January 2011

we met again by chance and started to see each other again as friends. It took a few months until we became an actual couple and our love story finally started continued in January 2016 when our son, Alessandro, was born. Andalusian charm Francesco’s father was born in Andalucía and his parents now live in Marbella. We thought it would be a good idea to celebrate

our wedding here as we know Marbella very well and we always feel like we are at home there. We also wanted to give our guests the opportunity to enjoy a holiday.

We fell in love with the Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa straight away. It is romantic and classical with a Spanish touch, the walkways though the gardens which lead to the beach are absolutely beautiful

and we felt the whole venue really reflected the best of Andalucía. The wedding planner Tara Lorimer convinced us 100 per cent that we had made the right choice, as she was so lovely and very organised. We

felt we were in great hands and she understood exactly what we needed. She supported us with everything, offering advice on music, flowers and decoration.

It was a big help because it is difficult to organise a wedding from overseas and, thanks

to Tara, everything was perfect.

Dress to impress For my wedding dress I wanted something that was classical and romantic but would still surprise everyone with the ‘wow’ factor. I chose the Italian atelier Le Spose di Giò and the first time I went to the boutique I found the dress of my dreams. It was a light ivory gown with lace details and a full tulle skirt. For once in my

life I really wanted to feel like a princess and the dress made me feel just that - and more. My

shoes are also from Le Spose di Giò; they were a simple style, a ballerina pump with twine on the front.

The groom’s suit was a complete surprise. I know my husband has very good taste but he really outdid himself. I just told Francesco the colour of my dress and he turned up in an elegant blue suit which fitted with everything perfectly. My bridesmaids were both pregnant at the time, so I just asked them to find a coral dress in a style that they liked. They went for floorlength gowns with a diamond halterneck and they both looked beautiful.

Nail biting moments My hair was styled by the hairdresser from the hotel. I wanted to show off the back of my dress so the stylist did a modern take on a chignon. My make-

up artist was the talented Nicola McGeorge and I loved having her by my side on the most important day of my life.

Nicola is so professional and nice; we had a huge delay because of the hairstyle, but she handled everything with ease. She had to work quickly but the results were amazing. She then accompanied me to the church to retouch the make-up and she also came to Puente Romano again for the cocktail hour and to help us with the photo session on the beach. She stayed much

longer than she had to and I am so grateful to her for that. I was happy that she was there as she created such a pleasant atmosphere despite the stressful moments - and she’s very funny too! A taste of Spain The ceremony was very emotional. We took our vows at the magnificent Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Incarnacion in Marbella’s charming Casco Antiguo. The atmosphere in the church was magical. Back at Puente Romano we chose to hold the cocktail hour at the Patio as we wanted to have the

typical atmosphere of Andalucía. It is a big patio with fuchsia bougainvillea so the location didn’t need much in the way of decoration. We had a Spanish guitarist playing and traditional Andalusian style canapés were served as we wanted to give our guests the opportunity to taste local produce. There was Jamón Iberico, Paella, Queso Manchego and so on which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The reception was held on the beach at Del Mar. Again we didn’t need much décor, we just added candelabras to the tables. We did have a theme - Spanish towns that we had visited and fallen in love with. Jazz music was played during the meal and then a flamenco group performed for us in the middle of the venue, which was fabulous. By the end of the show everyone was up dancing with the group. My favourite moment… I loved the ceremony, it was so touching. As I started to walk down the central navata and heard ‘Canone in Re maggiore’ I became very emotional. Everybody was smiling at me and I felt so much love for my husband, Francesco. It was an amazing day. Months

later our guests are still talking about it. I honestly never thought the day could be that perfect!

Wow

Emily Emily and and Arie’s Arie’s wedding wedding extravaganza extravaganza was was the the essence essence of of all all that that is is romantic. romantic.

Hey sugar My older sister introduced Arie and me and tried to set us up. I was too focussed on my Master’s degree at the time so I ignored all his efforts to win me over. However, he managed to trick me into a dinner date and we ordered so many desserts I knew he was a keeper. Little did I know that my sister had tipped him off that I have a big sweet tooth. We were together for three years before the proposal. We went on a weekend trip to Paris and since the holiday was my suggestion,

of having that connection to Spain and have our wedding abroad. We had our civil wedding with immediate family in Mayfair in London so it was a no brainer to have the main wedding in Spain. Initially we wanted to do it in Ibiza as we have so many happy memories together there but we were underwhelmed by the wedding venues so we thought Marbella was a much better option.

I had NO IDEA he was going to propose. Arie said it was the hardest thing ever, as he’s usually rubbish at keeping things a secret. It had been raining so heavily all day and we finally managed to go for a walk in the park just as the rain stopped. He got

down on two knees as he was so nervous, bless him. It was amazing. We laughed and cried a lot.

Postcard perfect Arie is from Madrid so we knew we wanted to take advantage

She really was incredible and so professional with very exacting standards.

Arie and I like attention to detail and Carla executed everything perfectly – it was exactly what we wanted and it meant we genuinely enjoyed planning the wedding. All hail the veil I wore a couture Monique L’Huillier dress in ivory with a blush underskirt. I found it in Browns Brides in London. It didn’t take me long to find one I liked as I knew exactly the style I wanted. Monique’s dresses are incredible – she uses very delicate custom made lace and mine had a very full tulle skirt. My veil was by Toni

Federcici – it was a chapel length veil lined with a French Alencon lace. After the ceremony, I added a custom-made Monique L’Huillier belt for the evening. I wore rose gold sandals by Sophia Webster.

Liza Mayne did my makeup and Alex at Alex Bridal did my hair. They were a great team and really

made me feel relaxed on the day. I wanted youthful, glowing look for my make-up and kept it quite classic. The girls from

Bardou Marbella came to do my bridesmaids’ and my Mum’s hair and makeup.

Molino Del Duque was actually the very first venue we saw and it ticked so many of our boxes that after seeing three or four more venues we knew it was the right choice. We were totally set on a couple of prerequisites for out venue. It had to have no time limit on the party and we wanted the whole thing to take place outside, so all hotel options were out. None of it would

have been possible, however, without our amazing wedding planner, Carla and her team at Tucco Events.

CONFETI 71

Walk this way The ceremony took place just before sunset so the light was golden - it was amazing. I had quite a long aisle which was great because it meant I could truly take in the moment with my dad as he walked me to Arie. In our cocktail hour after the ceremony we served our favourite cocktails, Margaritas, Mojitos and Moscow Mules. We had sushi as well as a modern-take on traditional tapas. We then had a sit down dinner by the amazing Goyo caterers who have a ultra modern style. We had a ruffled four-tier cake with handmade sugar flowers. Neither of us like fruit cakes so we went for chocolate. We both love dessert so we had a very long dessert table of treats! Grand designs Arie and I have quite a modern style so we categorically did not want ‘rustic’. I’d say

our wedding style/ decorations were modern romantic. For example, our

signage and table plan was made using Perspex which was unique. The colouring of the wedding was white, blush and gold and then we let the amazing surroundings of our venue do the rest.

72 CONFETI

Set the mood Pedro Navarro styled the wedding; he really is the best in Andalucia! My bouquet was beige, white and champagne David Austin roses with white hydrangeas.

Our centerpieces were my favourite. Pedro designed a completely unique piece – four bunches of flowers surrounding a beautiful candelabra. They were breathtaking. As our wedding was completely outdoors, we used

lighting to make the most of the gardens. Love is homemade My mum made my favours. She makes an incredible Caribbean hot pepper sauce so she made us miniature versions in custom boxes as a nod to my West Indian heritage. We also gave out fans and sun umbrellas as it was 30 degrees. Dapper details For entertainment during the cocktail hour we had a classic Spanish guitarist. During the dinner we had the incredible Yanela Brooks and her four-piece band. For the party we had the amazing Julian Ingrosso who flew from Miami to be there. It was awesome. Arie is big on music so we had a really cool stage, dancefloor and sound setup – all thanks to Soul Events. A photo speaks a thousand words El Marco Rojo took our photos. They have such a unique way of capturing moments, we literally relive the emotions when we look at the photos. Every single photo tells a story - they really understood us and our style which was great. Our favourite moments... We had an acrobat serving shots which made the party so much fun. The entire wedding was the highlight to be honest. We partied until 8am!

Real Weddings

FROM MOUNT FUJI

to La Concha Graciela and Carlos enjoyed a truly international romance by anybody’s standards but, when it came to securing the venue for their dream wedding, only one place stood out as a true contender.

Guanajuato-Hiroshima Carlos and I used to work for the same company, but in different countries. He was working at the headquarters in Hiroshima, Japan and I was working at the manufacturing plant in Guanajuato, Mexico. I went to Hiroshima for a business trip on January 2014; it was my first time in Japan and, since 2006, I had dreamed about visiting the country. For Carlos, it was his seventh year in Asia and his second year at Hiroshima. We first met at the airport on my arrival and then we met few more times for work-related purposes during my stay.

Matsuyama, walks through the snow in the streets of Kyoto, hours engrossed in conversation in a cafe in Tokyo – we were even trapped in a train during a snowstorm. But then, of course, I had to return home. After I left, the Pacific separated us for three months, but in June Carlos finally arrived in Mexico and from then until now fate has kept us together. Life in

Mexico passed quickly, as we shared work in the same company, travelled through central Mexico and shared more than any couple could share. Finally,

on a Cancun beach on December 30th 2015, Carlos proposed to me.

Snow Sports I must confess, though that a sightseeing trip to Miyajima Island was the first time we hung out together, but following this we enjoyed dinners with co-workers, strolls through Hiroshima and we also attended concerts together following that first time at Miyajima. An unforgettable Saturday spent snow skiing followed by a dinner at Izakaya was the perfect choice as our first date. That 25th of January we began dating without realizing that we were about to start something so big that we could not even imagine what might happen in the future.

because we were living in Mexico and couldn’t postpone the venue booking until our trip to Spain, we had to trust Carlos’s parents’ opinions. We selected some venues we liked by seeing them on the internet and then we made few appointments, which my parentsin-law had to attend.

More adventures followed: a bike tour of the islands near

We have to say, though, that we wanted to marry close to the

Coming Home

When it came to choosing a venue for a wedding we quickly decided on Spain, since Carlos’s home town is Málaga. However,

sea. We were very clear on that, so all the places we selected by going through various websites had a great sea view. Carlos’s

mother was in love with the Gran Meliá Don Pepe and when we first saw it we were surprised, not only by its beautiful sea views, but also by its gardens and its sense of luxury. Bridal Style My wedding dress was an elegant guipure lace gown from Aire Barcelona and I didn’t have bridesmaids. Our chosen colours were champagne, pale pink and white and the flowers were peonies and roses. In fact, our decoration

was very discreet because we had decided that the gardens of the Gran Meliá were stunning enough. We decided on a cocktail reception after the ceremony which included Iberico Ham, Quesadillas, Salmorejo and other local tasty appetizers. For our wedding breakfast we chose Crema de Carabinero con Canelón de Txangurro, Solomillo de Buey con Milhojas de Patatas, Salsa PX and Cebollitas Glasee, and a special dessert called Illanka by Darcis, cooked with Chocolate and Mango. Chill-out music played before the ceremony and throughout the cocktail reception. For the dinner, we enjoyed some electronic music. Our first dance was to ‘Arrullo

de Estrellas’, a famous Mexican alternative rock song. Unique Touches

Before the ceremony began, our guests were tasked to find a table with a small tree and some Japanese wooden markers. We asked them to write their wishes on the wood and hang it on the tree, which is what Japanese people do when they visit a temple. During the ceremony we burned two Japanese amulets that we bought in Kyoto when we started dating. This means that your dreams will come true. We also had some gifts for our guests and provided biznagas made of porcelain for women and bottles of tequila for the men.

The whole event was topped off by a loud and lively Mariachi show after dinner. We chose Owen Farrell as our photographer,

because we saw his work on the internet and were immediately impressed by it. Needless to say,

his work at our wedding was amazing and our guests seemed impressed by his dynamism. He has a real eye for artistic photos and he captures very natural shots. We couldn’t have asked for better photographer. Favourite moments Definitely the ceremony and the Mariachi show. The ceremony

also we planned to be something different, so let the officiant (Carlos’s old history teacher) do the talking. His charm and eloquence did the rest. The Mariachi show made me feel like I was at home. In Mexico it is a tradition that just before the wedding ends the Marichis will come to entertain the last remaining guests. At our wedding we decided that they should start the show right after dinner in order to lift the mood of the guests and prepare them for the dancing. “If I had to do it again I would change…?” We would change nothing because it was perfect. Our advice for future couples Avoid the stress that can occur in those last few days before the wedding and pay attention to every single detail during that special day. The time flies and all of a sudden you realise it’s all over.

n the past decade or so this beautiful area of the Costa del Sol has also become a popular destination for stag and hen parties, all of which are looking for a variety of experiences and local businesses have gained something of a reputation for ensuring that everyone has a great time. The Sala Group alone has a total of six venues in the area: La Sala By The Sea, La Sala Banús, OAK Garden & Grill, Mahiki Beach, Aqwa Mist and La Sala Gibraltar, all of which have a different vibe and offer wonderful spaces for formal functions and events of 10 people upwards. Sala Group can offer the perfect venue, whether you’re looking for a lazy day on the beach, an elegant dinner or a night on the dancefloor. Wayne Elliott, of Grupo La Sala, says, “We have noticed that these days it’s not only the stag and hen parties who are asking for a complete package. With more and more destination weddings taking place in the Marbella area it is now quite normal for a bridal party consisting of dozens of friends and relatives to spend a week on the Coast. Typically these consist of several generations, all of whom are looking for different things, so we have learned to provide tailored packages to suit everyone.” From pre-wedding get-togethers and celebrations to postwedding brunches and madeto-measure experiences, La Sala staff members are now very experienced in catering to the needs and requirements of bridal parties.

La Sala Banús is the only restaurant and bar in the Marbella area to offer live music from musicians, singers and DJs seven days a week, so it’s the perfect place to enjoy some topnotch entertainment while dining - and did we mention that the food is phenomenal? 80 CONFETI

La Sala By The Sea is the ideal location for relaxation, before or after the rigours of the day itself. With a choice of beds at the poolside or on the beach, an al fresco restaurant and a regular roster of special events, this is one of the Coast’s most popular beach clubs.

private dinner for your family and friends or a place where you can dance the night away, you are sure to find exactly what you are looking for.

Aqwa Mist is a must for keen clubbers and has, over the past few years, featured sets by such huge names as Craig David, Jason Derulo, Chris Brown, Tyga, Stormzy and Kano. If dancing the night away is something that you are considering for your wedding week (we already know that it’s de rigueur for hen parties!) then Aqwa Mist is the place for you. VIP experiences can also be organised with prior notice and you can be sure that your time there will be memorable, since staff members are accustomed to welcoming celebrities to the club, smoothing their path and ensuring that they enjoy their visit.

Located on the luxurious Sunborn Yacht Hotel, La Sala Gibraltar is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail and an elegant lunch or evening meal while soaking up the ambience of this beautiful yacht. Visitors can also enjoy the best musical entertainment in Gibraltar and southern Spain five nights a week. This has already proved a massively popular venue for both pre and post-wedding celebrations, with some couples also choosing to tie the knot onboard.

Mahiki Beach is the latest addition to La Sala’s stable and is a wonderfully exotic place to spend time soaking up the atmosphere – along with the sun - and sampling some of the cocktails on offer. The Polynesian theme ensures that Mahiki Beach stands out from the crowd and it is already fast becoming one of the main locations to see and be seen on the Costa del Sol.

OAK Garden & Grill, situated next to La Sala Banús and set in the gardens of a stylish Andalusian villa opened to great acclaim in 2016 and no wonder. This is heaven for carnivores, with more than 10 varieties of premium beef from around the world on the menu.

“We also offer a wide range of drinking, dining and entertainment inclusive packages,” says Wayne. “These are especially helpful if you are a large group of people and are getting together for a specific celebration like a wedding. If parties let us know what their requirements are in advance we can make sure that they are looked after in style.” From cocktails on the beach to an elegant dinner before hitting the dancefloor, it looks as though Sala Group has everything the most demanding bride and groom could wish for. events@salagroupholdings.com salagroupholdings.com

Photo Booth Fun! T here’s a reason why photo booths have become immensely popular at weddings; not only do they capture some hilarious and spontaneous moments, they provide a great way to bring your guests together. Photo booths can be the ultimate ice breaker, creating a sense of play and

togetherness among your guests and while the era of the selfie is still very much with us, we understand why photo booths are in such popular demand. Some of the best photo captures are of people dancing like no-one’s watching and letting their hair down (see our epic wedding fail photographs on pages … for proof!) So it’s no surprise that photo booths are taking over for a fun, laid back approach. If you’re celebrating your Special Day on the Costa del Sol, CONFETI has discovered an amazing service from Eventos Fotomatón. You can check out their website eventosfotomaton.com for more information, but this amazing team has something to suit everyone. Their unique backdrops (that can even be personalised) really stand out, not to mention

So if you’re looking for a fun way to entertain your guests at the reception, the photo booth is Confeti’s leading contender. DIY DECOR OF THE SEASON

Make your own

C

Mason Jar

ONFETI’s DIY tip of the season is one that is simple, versatile, recyclable and trending in weddings everywhere. The mason jar has been around for decades and was made originally for preserving food. Strangely these have become one of many brides' favourite ways of adding a little something to their wedding day without breaking the bank. We love that you can decorate these to fit in with your theme; whether shabby chic, vintage style or a sparkly, blingtastic affair, there is something for everyone. These jam jars not only act as a lovely vase or centrepiece, but can make fantastic pew ends, magical lights, wedding favours and even crockery. Take a look at some of the many ways you can jazz up your jar!

and use them for a themed centrepiece. For something more glamorous, try adding petals and scattered crystals to your jar for shimmering and colourful pew ends. We especially love the idea of filling jars with water, flower heads and placing a floating candle on top. Dot these around your venue for some extra special lighting. If magical fairy lights are for you, then follow these simple and quick steps.

OPTION ONE: FILL YOUR MASON JAR

HOW TO MAKE:

A fab way to get creative is to keep your mason jar untouched from the outside and fill it with items that tie in with your wedding day. For example, if you're taking some inspiration from Confeti’s ‘Theme Your Day-Beach’ and having a summer themed wedding, why not take a trip to your nearest beach and collect some items? This is a great excuse for a day trip and it won't cost you much at all. Fill your mason jar with sand, shells, starfish, pebbles

88 CONFETI

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

- A mason jar - A string of battery operated lights (very easy to buy from places such as eBay and even Primark) - Batteries - Sellotape

Insert the string of lights inside the mason jar - try to get them spread out as evenly as possible. Next tape your battery pack to the lid of the jar making sure it is secure. Switch on the battery pack and then close the lid. And voila! It’s as simple as that. You have your magical fairy light mason jar.

OPTION TWO: DECORATE YOUR MASON JAR

Your next option is to give

your jar a complete makeover from the outside. What's great about this is you can choose whatever you want and decorate it in the exact same style and colours as

your big day. We love the idea of spray painting the outside of jars, matching your wedding day colours and placing flowers in the top, acting as a centrepiece or perhaps adding detail to some of your stations, such as the guest book table. Remember, when spray painting, we recommend you do it outdoors, placing newspaper down and wearing gloves and a mask. If you’ve gone for a more of a shabby chic feel, try tying some lace or twine around the outside for a vintage look. Even pearls and brooches can add an extra special touch. Finally, for ultimate sparkle, why not give glitter mason jars a try? We all love a bit of bling so here's where to start :

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: -

A mason jar Loose chunky craft glitter Spray paint Spray adhesive or latex glue Paintbrush

- Clear acrylic sealer spray - Newspaper and a shallow tin

HOW TO MAKE:

Firstly we recommend putting down newspaper as this can get a little messy and glitter seems to get everywhere! If you are deciding to go with gold glitter, for example, Confeti recommends spray painting the jar first with gold spray paint to give it a base colour. Once this has dried, apply your glue. Both spray glue and latex work well with this method. If you want to cover only certain areas with glitter, then mark out your areas beforehand with tape. Next for the fun part! Start to sprinkle on your glitter - we prefer chunky glitter for a bold statement look. We advise that you do this over a shallow tin (a baking tray, for instance) to collect excess glitter and avoid mess. Rolling the jar in glitter can sometimes make it uneven, so sprinkling is best. Once your jar is evenly covered with glitter, dust off any excess with a soft paintbrush and leave to dry overnight. To finish, seal your jar by spraying it with a clear acrylic sealer or you can even use hairspray, but only if these jars are for décor purposes. There you have it! And, remember, practise makes perfect.

OPTION THREE : USE YOUR JAR

Confeti loves the idea of actually using your mason jars for the purpose for which they were intended. Create a welcome refreshment for your guests by preparing each jar with mixed fruits and garnishes and then tying straws around each one with ribbon or string. These can also be great for candy carts - just fill with sweets and add a label. For a smaller guest list or perhaps just for your bridesmaids and groomsmen, you can create brilliant wedding favours. Confeti’s favourite has to be these DIY booze kits and here's how to make them :

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

- A mason jar - A mini can of mixer e.g. coke, lemonade, tonic - Miniature bottles of alcohol of

your choice - Twine and 'thank you' tags - Straws (ideally in a colour that reflects your wedding colours)

HOW TO MAKE:

Firstly, place your miniature can inside the mason jar and then double up the twine and tie a double knot around the neck of the jar so it's nice and sturdy. Next make another knot on the same piece of twine but don’t pull it tight yet, Insert your straw and then continue to tighten. Use the same process again, this time adding your mini alcohol bottle and finish with a double knot to secure. Finally add your tag, finish with a bow and trim any excess twine. Easy, yet effective!

Seasonal colour Inspiration C

hoosing a colour scheme that complements the season of your wedding date can be tricky. If you are looking for some inspiration, take a look at Adorn Invitation’s ultimate bridal styling and colour palettes for the forthcoming seasons. No longer do wedding themes have to be just white alongside one other shade,CONFETI loves the combination of several colours, adding that little bit extra to your special day. With everything from bridesmaids’ dresses, shoes and décor, these gorgeous mood boards will hopefully help you choose a wedding colour palette to set the tone for your day just perfectly. adorninvitations.co.uk

Winter GLIDED CHARCOAL This dramatic black and gold styling is a great combination for a Winter wedding and an unusual spin on the more common ‘Winter Wonderland’ ceremonies. With a hint of glamour and glitter, this look gives off a rich, decadent vibe and is definitely one for couples who want to try something bold. Black isn’t the norm for a wedding, but combined with this palette it really works. We love how everything ties in together from the gold wedding dress details to sparkly Converse trainers!

Spring ROSE QUARTZ AND SERINITY The soft and subtle hues of blush and blue set the mood for a beautiful, fresh Spring wedding, finished off with modern rose gold accents that combine perfectly. Confeti especially loves the Valentino shoes, which also work well as the bride’s ‘something blue’ along with the on trend watercolour invitations. An ideal setting for romance!

Summer BOTANICAL

This combination is right on trend and perfect for tropical summer weddings. The green and white colours are classic, yet the hint of copper adds a modern twist, completing the whole look. Simplistic, yet so effective. Confeti loves the geometric decor and natural botanical look. Perfect for a lush, summer day!

Autumn BEJEWELLED

Autumn is a colourful season and what better way to combine it with your wedding day than by choosing a lavish, bejewelled theme? Your guests certainly won’t forget this unique statement combination. We love the way the colours look together and the most extravagant attention to detail – even the food even co-ordinates! Confeti’s favourites are the Oscar Tiye heels and the Geode style invite.

Carrots & Contraception 94 CONFETI

H

ippocrates (460 – 370 BC), one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine, prescribed wild carrots as an oral contraceptive. He also believed in Silphium, a member of the fennel family, and akin to both carrot and parsley, which was so popular from the 4th century BC that it became extinct by the 4th century AD. Wild carrots survived however, and flourished. They are perhaps better known by the name “Queen Anne’s Lace” (though as that highly popular monarch suffered seventeen pregnancies – with no surviving children – it is a trifle unclear as to why her name is applied to the plant!). Soranus (titter ye not!), who was born in 98 AD, devised a contraceptive brew which, in addition to wild carrot, included cabbage, rue, mint, dittany, silphium, myrrh, pepper

and (wait for it!) birthwort. He also suggested a post-coital remedy, which consisted of holding your breath, sneezing, and a drink of cold water. (But then, the Victorians believed that jumping up and down at this point also worked!) Both Queen Anne’s Lace and Silphium look similar and, indeed, their roots can be eaten as a vegetable, hence the sobriquet “wild carrot”. A slight problem arises, however, from the fact that they also look very similar to hemlock, drinking which, of course, put paid to Socrates in 399 BC.

Silphium was well known to the Egyptians as long ago as the seventh century BC. Their physicians recommended a monthly dose mixed with resin the

size of a chickpea and taken with water. This resin was laserpicium, and Pliny the Elder (who perished during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD whilst trying to rescue a friend from Pompeii) recommended its use soaked in “soft wool” as a pessary. There is some evidence from modern research that these nostrums may indeed work. The seeds of Queen Anne’s lace block progesterone synthesis, disrupting implantation. However, hemlock apart, women with a history of gallstones or kidney problems should avoid these estrogen rich wild carrots! The ancient doctors clearly knew a thing or two, and often their prescriptions have stood the test of time. But the quest for reliable contraception has sometimes produced totally ludicrous results. Whilst some Egyptian women

were happily and effectively chewing silphium seeds or drinking a resinous potion, others, as attested by papyri dating from 1850 BC, were carefully making a pessary out of crocodile dung. Such dung, of course, has alkaline properties which probably makes it an effective spermicide, whilst a solid ball of poo might form a barrier not only to sperm but

IN INDIA IN THE FIRST CENTURY AD WOMEN SIMILARLY INSERTED PESSARIES MADE OF HONEY, GHEE, AND ELEPHANT DUNG.

also to an otherwise loving spouse! The Ebers Papyrus, dating from 1550 BC, prescribes wool soaked in donkey’s milk, or alternatively a mixture of honey, dates and acacia juice. This latter actually contains spermicidal lactic acid, and so may have been effective, although the addition of honey and dates must have made the whole concoction horribly sticky. Not that some women objected to using such a method. They were buried with it implanted, so that they wouldn’t become pregnant in the afterlife if they didn’t wish to do so.

HIPPOCRATES (460 – 370 BC), ONE OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING FIGURES IN THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE, PRESCRIBED WILD CARROTS AS AN ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE.

The ancient Egyptians were not alone in their use of honey or dung. In India in the first century AD women similarly inserted pessaries made of honey, ghee, and elephant dung. Such devices, of course, have always been a favourite method of contraception. Giacomo Casanova (1725 – 1798 AD) inserted half a lemon before making love. He was not the first to do so, but others have used such items as seaweed, oiled paper, beeswax or even (I jest not) a teapot lid. The Victorians produced a sort of six sided wooded contraption which was not only difficult to insert but was also torture to both parties involved in the intercourse. It did not gain wide acceptance! Greek and Roman women were into douches in a big way, using such stinging liquids as lemon juice and vinegar. In India women used a sort of kettle, whose spout emitted hot steam. Even today, doctors in the United States have reported teenagers using Coca-Cola. It tends not to be too effective! Or at least, it is as effective as drinking water that a blacksmith has used for cooling iron. Women in ancient China drank an infusion of mercury, which undoubtedly sterilised them, but which also killed them from brain damage and kidney failure. Mediaeval

Europe had far safer methods. A necklace made of weasel’s testicles worn around the neck during intercourse was believed to be efficacious, as was an amulet made from donkey dung (here we go again!), and mules’ earwax. A bone taken from the right rib of a black cat strapped to the woman’s thigh might also prove useful. And it was not only a weasel’s testicles that was in demand. Native American Indians pulverised beavers’ testicles in strong alcohol, whilst at one time European physicians prescribed pulverised mules’ testicles as a contraceptive drink for men before intercourse. Perhaps one of the safest (but by no means infallible) methods of birth control is, of course, the condom. It is unlikely that this method derives its name from the Dr Condom who once advised a British king in the eighteenth century to use a sheep’s intestine, but more likely from the latin “condon”, which means receptacle. Similar sheaths have been found at Dudley Castle in England, dating back to 1640. The idea, however, goes back far further. Indeed, some experts believe that cave paintings in France dating back over twelve thousand years depict men wearing condoms. The French remained in the market thereafter, as we can see from the advertisement which appeared in the “New York Times” in 1861 for “Dr Power’s French Preservatives”. Papyri from ancient Egypt dating back three thousand years show men wearing sheaths, which were probably similar to those used in the Minoan civilisation made from goat bladders. These were undoubtedly softer than the methods used by Japanese men in the 19th century. They used “kabutogata”; sheaths made from leather or tortoiseshell…ouch!
