My SPOSA 2014 Collection was based on an ‘EDGY ROMANCE’ theme. The dresses took a more romantic turn but were paired down, the shapes simple and modern, with attention to detail, texture, re-application of lace onto beading, hints of nude colouring and a play on layering and transparency. The location gave the collection room to breathe and, with the music and lights and my choreographic background set against an urban location, enabled me to create a world of ROMANTIC MYSTERY, an unearthly quality that pulled the audience into its spell... These names included Timeless Couture, Astral Sundholm Circa Brides, Love Yu, Emily Jean, Nymphi, and Charlotte Casadejus, who commented: “The show was recommended to me by various boutiques as ‘the place to be’ for designers. The show is extremely slick and a fascinating insight into the higher end of bridal design. The Designer Preview presented an equally show-stopping selection of dresses from designers such as Blue, Charlotte Balbier and Terry Fox. DAY ONE London’s premier bridal design event, White Gallery London got off to an impressive start today with four stunning designer catwalk shows from some of the industry’s most prestigious names. Opening the shows in his own inimitable style was Royal couturier Stewart Parvin. Reaffirming his signature aesthetic of chic understated elegance, the collection displayed a high fashion yet demure take on Parvin’s classic Bridalwear. Trends included clean chic lines with tone on tone embellishment and an emphasis on texture and fabric which resulted in another strong collection from Stewart Parvin – the master of couture.

At the second show of the day Ian Stuart chose to celebrate the diversity of women’s style with a collection that was as cutting edge as it was classic and as eccentric as it was refined. Trends included ‘Pure and Simple’ clean lined gowns with elegant draping, ‘Natural Woodland’ distressed fabrics and untidy trimmings that created an organic feel, ‘Romantic’ beautiful ball gowns adorned with roses, bows and dramatic decorations as well as enchanting pastel hues in blush pink, pale lilac and powCONFETI 23
der blue, with hints of cranberry and antique gold. Embodying personality and uniqueness within each design, Ian showcased a collection that ultimately reflects all that women are. In the afternoon Alan Hannah chose to showcase both Alan Hannah and Miamia on the catwalk. The Alan Hannah collection includes gorgeous clean and fashion forward silhouettes in silk duchesse and taffeta with beautiful hand beaded necklines and shoulder detailing. Setting the trends for 2014, Alan Hannah has created sheer backs with spectacular beadwork that created a dazzling presence on the catwalk.
His ‘Frill Me’ collection serves both the traditional and modern bride, demonstrating a renewed approach to his award winning talent. The show-stopping gowns showed hints of a new direction as well as his signature look that has captivated his audience over the last decade. Ian continued his love of colour, which featured prominently alongside lace decorations and appliqué, striking crys-
tal beading and stunning flowers. Demonstrating both passion and originality, the new collection from Ian Stuart created a stir amongst White Gallery London visitors and press alike. In the afternoon, Anoushka G and George Hadji continued the brand’s love affair with timeless elegance and vintage glamour with their 2014 collection. Using Ian Stuart
the finest materials, Anoushka G included a variety of antique laces and tulles with rich crepes and flowing silk chiffons. Opulent beading and appliques were used to highlight the personality of each gown. Trends included hand-crafted delicate fluting, beautiful trains and overskirts, resulting in another classic sophisticated collection from the brand. The Designer Preview drew the 2013 catwalk shows to a close, with a dramatic finale showcasing key pieces from the 2014 collections of Annasul Y, Blue, Charlotte Balbier, Elizabeth Stuart, Ivory & Co., Kisui, Lusan Mandongus, Naomi Neoh, Sadoni, Terry Fox, Yolan Cris and Harbridge and Bowen.
The MiaMia collection builds on the bohemian look of the previous collection whilst adding new fabrics and embellishments to unstructured chiffon and organza. The updated classic theme has been developed and expanded with unusual beadwork and inspired floral detailing. Ending the first day of catwalk shows was the Designer Preview, which showcased key pieces from the 2014 collections of Annasul Y, Blue, Charlotte Balbier, Elizabeth Stuart, Harbridge & Bowen, Ivory & Co., Kisui, Lusan Mandongus, Naomi Neoh, Sadoni, Terry Fox and Yolan Cris, providing a stunning overview of the key trends for 2014. The Designer Preview brought the first day of White Gallery London to an unforgettable close. DAY TWO London’s leading designer bridal event, White Gallery London 2013, continued to delight on day two with four fabulous designer catwalk shows. Opening the show on day two was Stephanie Allin, who followed on from her highly successful 2013 collection by continuing with the colours that she introduced last year - unabashed nudes, powder blues and golds. Detailed embellishment covered Stephanie Allins’s catwalk as she introduced beautiful hand beaded laces, fine chantilly lace and statement art deco motifs. With an abundance of interesting shapes, Stephanie Allin has created a softer and more romantic look for 2014. At the second show of the day Ian Stuart repeated his celebration for the diversity of women. 24 CONFETI

ONFETI talks to...
Charlotte Balbier talks trends exclusively to CONFETI Where did the inspiration come from for you latest collection? Every day brings a new lease of inspiration and ideas. My Charlotte Balbier brides are amazing and I love to hear from them with all their wedding news and journeys. I’ve built up a large Twitter following and feel privileged to be able to stay in touch with my brides every-day. I relax away from work by taking my dog Buster for a walk and mull over new ideas in the countryside. I have a big passion for haute couture, and keep an eye on new trends. I will be launching a new dress collection soon so keep your eyes peeled for this. Describe your new Decade of Style collection... My latest collection is the marking of my 10th anniversary. One of my goals for this collection was to draw on the last nine collections, also my brides over the last 10 years as they are truly amazing and all so different. Taking what I have learned and evolving the brand and gowns, I set to work to create a new collection that would move not only Charlotte Balbier but also bridal trends in a new direction. What trends are there currently in the bridal industry? For 2014, it is all about embellishing definitive looks with modern touches. Brides to be, are all about back detail with low cut backs, cutaway daring designs 26 CONFETI
and sheer lace backs all very much on trend. The grandness of the Great Gatsby and the flapper style embellishments has certainly had an influence on bridal trends and a nod to the 1920s is apparent, lots of feather accessories, metallic embellishments and beautiful beading are hot for 2014. Do you have any advice for women who have just started to look for their wedding dress? Keep an open mind. It’s good to use magazines and look on line for inspiration but when you go for bridal appointments at the boutiques, listen to what the sales advisors suggest, as they are experts. Nine times out of 10 they will suggest a dress that turns out to be ‘the one’. What made you want to become a bridal designer? I am the third generation of bridal designers in our family. I was born into bridal heritage, with both my grandparents being in bridal design, manufacturing and retail between the 1960s and 1990s. My grandparents had several bridal
boutiques across the U.K and a manufacturing business that supplied independent boutiques both in the U.K and internationally. My Mum is award winning bridal designer Amanda Wyatt who is celebrating 20 years at the forefront of British bridal couture with her own brand Amanda Wyatt. Bridal has been a family business and it still is - even my grandfather still works in the business. How have you seen your brand develop? Over the 10 years as a designer my aim was always to create fresh and exciting designs that still remain true to the brand identity and that are instantly recognisable as a Charlotte Balbier. I have achieved this and grown and evolved the brand from a newcomer in 2003 to one of the U.K’s best known and loved British bridal brands, with over 40 stockists. Who would you love to see in one of your wedding gowns? Michelle Williams would be a dream bride as her red carpet style is flawless. I love how she has her own style and mixes old
Hollywood glamour with a modern day edge. I am creating a new line of eveningwear soon and I can’t wait to see these dresses on the red carpets. What do you imagine your own wedding gown to look like? I am getting married this year so I can’t really say too much as I don’t want to ruin the surprise. What I can say is it’s truly beautiful and be prepared for a little surprise! What has been your most memorable experience so far?
My ‘Summer Of Love’ collection that I launched in 2007 put me on the map, so to speak. This was my fifth collection and I really pushed the boundaries to create a collection that was completely different. I also produced a photoshoot to go with this collection that at the time was very different to what anyone has ever done before in bridal. The location, model, styling and photography were amazing and I still love it five years on! Another turning point was that, when I started in 2003, there were no lace dresses on the market and my first collection and every collection since has featured lace pieces and it’s so lovely to see it now so popular. In my first CONFETI 27
two shows so many people said to me, “Oh lace won’t sell! It looks too vintage and brides don’t like vintage.” I’m glad I stood by what I believed in and pushed the boundaries.
Yes I have been several times, I love Marbella. My favourite place to stay is Elviria, I love to go for dinner in Orange Square - fabulous restaurants. Of course, no trip to Marbella would be complete without a long lunch in the sun at Nikki Beach.
Which fashion designers have inspired you?
What dress would you recommend a bride to wear for a summer Marbella wedding?
I adore Elie Sabb, his red carpet gowns are simply out of this world. Valentino is my all-time favourite and I have huge respect and admiration for Jenny Packham and Vivienne Westwood. Very different designers, but I love them both.
Chiffon is the perfect fabric, it’s light and flowing and looks stunning in the sunshine. Any tips for summer weddings?
What do you think are the most important aspects of a wedding day? Well, the vows really should be the most important part but my Three Golden Rules are a good photographer, amazing dress and fantastic food and drink. How would you define glamour? High heels, polished appearance 28 CONFETI

The Ring By Padre Peter
W
e have a wedding custom in Spain called the “Arras”. This consists of an exchange of coins between the groom and the bride. There are thirteen of them, and symbolize the sharing of material goods which takes place in a marriage. Originally, the Mozarabs used thirteen coins to symbolize the twelve months of the year, plus one for the poor. Under Christian rule the emphasis shifted to Jesus Christ and the twelve Apostles. Symbolism apart, they represented the dowry paid to the groom by the bride’s family. In some of the border regions this dowry was strictly regulated: twenty maravedis for a virgin and ten for a widow. (If necessary, this
30 CONFETI
sum could be paid in instalments.) What has this to do with rings? According to the Prayer Book of King Edward VI of England, after the words “with this ring I thee wed” in the marriage service, there followed the words “This gold and silver I give thee”, as the groom handed a purse to his bride. This was known as “Earnest Money”, and was a portion of the dowry being returned to signify that the groom was prepared to support his bride. This emphasized that the ring was connected to an exchange of valuables, rather than a symbol of eternal love. Marriage was a contract between families, not young lovers, and economic stability was vital. Indeed an old German wedding formula ran “I give you this ring as a sign of
the marriage which has been promised between us, provided your father gives a marriage portion of (number) reichstalers.” The wearing of a wedding ring has, however, an ancient history. The Romans wore their rings (the anulus pronobis) on the fourth finger of the left hand because of the vein called the “vena amoris”. They believed that this vein runs directly from the finger to the heart which, as we all know, is the seat of love! Not all cultures follow this pattern. Orthodox countries like Russia and Greece, together with Catholic and Protestant countries like Germany, Denmark, Poland and here in Spain, wear rings on the right hand. Some cultures, such as the Jews, wear the ring on the index finger during the
ceremony, moving it to the “ring finger” afterwards. In mediaeval Europe, during the marriage ceremony, the ring was placed in sequence on the index, middle and then the ring finger of the left hand. But during the 17th and 18th century the ring could be found on any finger of either hand, including the thumb. In many Orthodox countries the bride will wear a ring on her left hand before the marriage ceremony, moving it to her right hand afterwards. Rings are not part of the traditional Muslim ceremony, although the custom is gaining ground. In Iran the left hand is used, but in other Islamic countries either hand is used. In such countries a ring is, however, often used to denote an engagement rather than a marriage, and this is true also in India.
Despite the fact that the left hand is not considered auspicious for the performance of religious activities, the ring is nevertheless worn on that hand. In Sri Lanka the groom will wear a ring on his right hand, whilst the bride wears it on her left. Some Hindu brides will wear a ring on their big toe. This is known as a bichiya, whilst in West Bengal the loha or iron bangle is worn. This is increasingly coated in gold or silver to give it a better appearance. The Chinese have developed an interesting theory regarding the reason for the ring being worn on the fourth finger. They regard the thumb as representing one’s parents, the index finger one’s siblings, the middle finger oneself, the ring finger one’s life partner,
and the little finger one’s children. If one’s two hands are placed together, fingertip to fingertip, with the middle fingers bent with the middle portion together, one can then separate one’s thumbs. This shows that at some stage we separate from our parents. The index fingers can also be separated, as we do not remain with our siblings all our lives. The little fingers may be separated, as children will up and leave home. Now try separating your ring fingers. It cannot be done. Life partners are together through thick and thin. Whilst wedding rings tend to be made of yellow or white gold or platinum, often with an inscription engraved along the inside of the circle, the engagement ring will usually contain some form
of precious stone. This custom, traditionally given as a betrothal present, predates the use of the wedding ring itself, as does the “fede” ring. The name derives from the Italian “mani in fede” (“hands in faith”), and the rings depict joined hands. These too go back to ancient Roman times. As the custom spread the “claddagh” ring made its appearance in the little town of that name in County Galway. It originated in the seventeenth century, and comprised two hands holding a crowned heart. The hands represent friendship; the heart represents love; and the crown represents loyalty. In Rumania couples celebrating their silver weddings exchange silver rings, which they wear alongside their wedding rings.
It is, of course, the duty of the Best Man to guard the rings, and to present them at the symbolic moment during the ceremony, although from time to time the rings will be ceremoniously present on the “ring cushion”. This is usually performed by a “ring bearer”; a junior member of the family. It is important that this individual is reliable and trustworthy. I well remember on one occasion telling a Best Man how the rings should be affixed to the cushion with a simple single bow. Unbeknown to me the ring bearer was eavesdropping. Came the ceremony, and he sat in the front row with a beatific smile on his cherubic countenance as he carefully double knotted both rings. Fortunately, I tend to carry a penknife…

EDEN ORGANIC CARE 100% Pure Organic Avocado Oil Nicola: I am not a great lover of oils as they usually cause my skin to break out and, to tell the truth, I simply don’t like the feel of them on my skin, so I didn’t hold much hope for this product. I do love it when I am wrong. Avocado oil is highly valued for its regenerative and moisturising properties and is loaded with a variety of nutrients. I applied it all over my body straight after a shower so that my skin was still damp. Due to the hot summer my skin has been very dry and scaly. Not anymore. Not only did it tackle this issue but left a gorgeous sheen. It is also a great multi-tasker. I have been using it as a cuticle oil, hair mask and hair serum, making it a great value beauty staple.

GREEN PEOPLE Scent Free Sun Lotion Spf25 Nicola: I have suffered from prickly heat since I was a child. Most of my family holidays were spent in the local chemist trying to find something to ease the condition. Eventually we realised it was caused by all the nasty chemicals in the sun creams. To put this product to the test I spent a day by the pool, since chlorine and sun cream really aggravates prickly heat. I also went for a run in 30 degree heat and finally wore the cream under makeup. There was not a bump in sight. Another plus is that you don’t get that horrible white chalky look as with some sun creams, however I would recommend giving yourself time to rub the lotion in thoroughly. 34 CONFETI
Hayley: I have really sensitive skin and my psoriasis flares up with most product. Green People’s range of scent free body products is especially formulated not to irritate sensitive or damaged skin, making it perfect for someone like me. Their Neutral Scent Free Hand & Body Lotion with organic perilla, evening primrose and shea butter soothes my skin and I liked the fact that it didn’t leave a greasy residue like many lotions. My skin felt soft and moisturised with no side effects. The sun lotion was another star product for me as it let my skin breathe. Altogether, a rare find when it comes to sun creams.
BOBBI BROWN Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner Nicola: I used this product not only to line the upper and lower lashes but also on the waterline. The product glides on without pulling or tugging on the skin and has a longer staying power than traditional eyeliner pencils. Expresso Ink, a brown/black, is my must have shade. KERASTASE Nutritive Masquintense Nicola: I have thin, dry, very long, highlighted hair, which needs a LOT of TLC. I started off by shampooing my hair with the Nutritive Bain Satin 1 and then applied the Nutritive Masquintense for Fine Hair for five minutes. This is Kerastase’s first GlucoActive enriched hair-care programme to boost conditioning nourishment from root to tip. My hair felt soft and replenished with an incredible shine. After towel drying my hair, I massaged in a pea size amount of ELIXIR ULTIME Versatile Beautifying Oil, which contains a blend of Argan, Camellia, Maize and Pracaxi to calm down frizzy hair. Therapist-to-the-stars, Deborah Mitchell is known for using only natural, organic ingredients in her Heaven Skincare range and has earned a worldwide reputation for excellence attracting many A-List fans such as Victoria Beckham, Michelle Pfeiffer and members of the Royal Family. In this exclusive interview, she shares her bridal tips with CONFETI and reveals the secret behind Kate Middleton’s wedding day glow.
When should I begin taking care of my skin for that bridal glow? As soon as your wedding is booked plan your skin care regime. This is an investment you will never regret. Should I get a facial before my wedding? No, unless it’s Heaven. Quite blunt I know, but unless you are familiar with having a particular facial and you know it’s never affected you, don’t risk it. One of the most important days of your life could be ruined by an allergy. You could opt to take your own skin care routine with you and ask the therapist to use those products instead. Why do so many brides have skin allergies before weddings? Some have probably never had a facial before, but a big day makes them take the plunge. However the main reason is because fear and worry cause the body to be sensitive to products and ingredients. Allergens that the body would normally cope with can cause skin problems. That’s why a trusted organic product such as Heaven that has an amazing track record for being good for sensitive skins is a wise choice. I would always recommend patch testing skincare products beforehand. Behind the ear is usually a good place, however if you are having your hair up for your wedding, opt for somewhere sensitive and hidden from sight and test all the products on that one area. What treatments would you recommend for brides to be? Our Dream Facial makes skin glow and leaves you feeling like you are floating on air. It is excellent for people with insomnia, stress or anxiety. A bee sting facial can be completely
36 CONFETI
relaxing and will help you look your best while the Deep Dermal Cleanse is the only facial of its kind that helps spots and blackheads without causing more flare-ups. How did you feel after hearing that Kate Middleton had been given Heaven Skin care to use before her wedding day? I think the Duchess of Cambridge is beautiful and knowing she had been given Heaven Bee Venom and other products was a real joy for me. I feel very privileged to be in the position I’m in, treating members of the Royal family. How should I deal with a lastminute breakout? Use our Age Defiance and Youthful Moisturiser; these work like little miracles. Also, our Silk Skin Tinted Moisturiser, which was used at a famous royal wedding not so long ago. My mother is worried about looking old in the wedding photos, what anti-ageing treatments and products should she try? With the BSF Facial - the Bee Sting - she would not have to worry about this at all. If her skin is damaged by sun then the Divine Cream and Bee Venom Mask would help. How can I keep dry skin from flaking? Using the right skincare means there should be no flakiness. My friend Nikki always had this problem and she found moisturising did not work as well as the Heaven Skin Polish.
She loves the double strength, but the week before a wedding only use single. What’s the best way to deal with redness? Age Defiance and the Bee Venom Mask, they are amazing. How can I deal under-eye bags on my wedding day? Don’t use eye cream the week before the wedding. Eye creams create bags, as they are too thick and heavy; our Heavenly Eyes is a putty formulation and reduces bags while the Eye Soother Gel diminishes lines in one application. Lots of water and not skipping meals all helps the lymphatic system.
What can I do to give my skin that wedding-day glow? Use Heaven Skin Polish for six days, two weeks before the wedding, then on alternate days during the week before the wedding. It removes all the dead dull skin and brightens the new. You’ll look like a real babe on the day. Natural Nuptials I By Padre Peter
n what is undoubtedly one of the most delightful and most underrated corners of Al-Andalus lies the little town of Gaucin. And one of the gems of Gaucin is the Hacienda La Herriza. It is reached by a road which calls upon all the skills a driver may possess not to fall crashing into the cork oaks which line the road. It is, however, well worth the effort; just drive more slowly!
The Hacienda is a hotel with a difference. With rooms situated in little villas grouped round a main building and courtyard, it is a true example of Spanish architecture. The staff, many of whom have been there for years – always a good sign - are excellent and attentive, presided over by a most genial proprietor. David Rodriguez de la Huerga boasts a name that would not have disgraced a Conquistador, but this particular Spaniard was educated at an English public school, and so not only speaks the language impeccably, but also understands the foibles and eccentricities which may be found amongst his British guests. There is also a certain eccentricity to be found amongst his Spanish compatriots. Like the wedding couple who, on the day of departure, requested that all the uneaten food should be parcelled up so that they could take it with them! Naturally, the hotel obliged. Not that his expertise is confined to the British and Spanish. Swedes, Belgians, Indians, French, Dutch, Germans, a veritable United Nations has made its way to his welcoming doors, there to discover just what it is that makes the place so special. As the thrifty Spanish scavengers found, this is particularly true when it

comes to the question of weddings. For a truly memorable occasion it would be difficult to beat the experience of getting spliced whilst facing the spectacular scenery of Europe’s largest cork oak forest across the valley, before retiring to a reception in a beautiful and elegant courtyard, or a restaurant that is on a par with some of the finest to be found. With such a perfect ambiance a perfect wedding is almost assured. But sometimes…! On one notable occasion the young lady concerned made Hitler look a mere amateur, with both David and her Wedding Planner being paraded at frequent intervals to receive their Orders of the Day. Her tentacles stretched into the village, where she adorned the trees along the route with pictures of herself and her beloved in flamenco dress, even obliterating the Junta’s road signs in the process. Her father was a butcher, whose sole topic of conversation was to suggest, with a steely glint in his eye, that all prices could be reduced. (His daughter was clearly a chip off the old – butcher’s – block!) The Reception was held in a sort of mocked-up Turkish harem style, whilst their national flags flew from the terrace. But if such a wedding tended to be slightly over-organised, some weddings veer in the opposite direction, even if they do so unintentionally.
One bride was an inveterate animal lover, so David, with his usual wit, commented that a goat might make an appearance to add a rustic touch, as such animals roam the region around La Herriza. To his no small consternation the bride seized on the idea, and a flock of twelve goats with bells clanking and an attendant shepherd made their appearance on the festive day. All went well until in the middle of the ceremony I realised that one goat was busily chewing at the hem of my robe, whilst another was equally busily finishing off a bridesmaid’s bouquet. They mingled politely at the reception, until one deposited a little whoopsy between an aunty’s sandalled toes. Goat whoopsies have quite a firm composition and may be shaken off easily, but not after having been embedded by an enquiring forefinger… And whilst on the subject of being shaken off, I remember one gallant groom arriving on a splendid white stallion (provided yet again by David, who seems to be able to lay his hand upon even the most outlandish objects requested). Replete in Andalusian costume with hat and fake moustache, the faux Don made a splendid picture, bathed in the ador-
ing gaze of his melting bride. The stallion’s owner, walking alongside, just managed to catch the wouldbe Zorro before he hit the ground in dismounting. I can also recollect an occasion when the bride, a noted rider, decided that she would also like to make her entrance on horseback. She disdained the use of a side-saddle, and her somewhat ungainly attempts to mount her steed in a full length wedding gown caused much hilarity. In the end, she walked. But it must be said that such weddings are the exception rather than the rule. Most weddings go off splendidly without a hitch, and at times the atmosphere can become almost tangibly romantic. Just such an occasion was a Hindu wedding at which several nationalities were present. At the conclusion of the ceremony, a number of the guests invaded the villas surrounding the reception area. As the sun slowly sank, and the flares were lighted, they hung out of the windows to serenade the arriving bride and groom. On a rather more raucous note, however, one Swedish wedding might well have been heard across the valley as chupito glasses of aquavit were tossed back with metronome regularity to the accompaniment of a “lip swabbing” song which appeared to have no beginning and no end. This is all in a day’s work for David and his wonderful staff, who form a team able to cope with even the most outlandish of requests with the same professionalism and aplomb that they apply to the more “normal” affairs. Not that they would admit that there is ever anything outlandish or abnormal about their guests. As Gertrude Stein might well have remarked, in their eyes, “a guest is a guest is a guest” – particularly if she’s a bride! laherriza.com

Date with Destiny Family affair for Sarah & Matthew at El Oceano
OUR STORY We met at school 11 years ago, so it really does seem that we were destined to be together. We started out as best friends, a situation that lasted for two years before the relationship deepened and we have been together ever since. Maybe it was the length of our relationship that made Matt think that he really had to pull out all the stops for his proposal, because what he organised was everything that a bride-to-be could possibly wish for. We were in Paris and had booked a dinner cruise on the Seine, which was romantic enough by itself but, as we were passing the Eiffel Tower, Matt proposed to me. It took a while to sink in but I don’t think that it’s an experience that either of us will forget in a hurry! It also explains the Parisian inspiration behind our wedding. 44 CONFETI
Once the engagement was confirmed the next step was deciding on a location for the wedding. However, since we’ve both lived in Spain for 11 years, the decision was quite easy since we look on it as our home. Also, with family and friends nearby, or only a short plane journey away at worst, it seemed right to get married in the country in which we have spent most of our lives. The weather is always fantastic, but we decided that the end of May would be perfect; not too hot, but warm enough to dine and celebrate al fresco. THE DETAILS Having decided to get married in Spain we knew that we would be spoiled for choice when it came to potential venues. In the end the place that impressed us most was El Oceano – it was just perfect for our wedding. We loved the interior
and the exterior is breathtaking, the pool area almost melting into the views of the Mediterranean beyond. I was lucky enough to have the help of my amazing brother and sister-in-law who helped us at every stage of the planning and organisation and, in the end, we were able to enjoy the wedding of our dreams in the company of our family and good friends – and in a stunning place. Naturally, I had thought about my dress a lot and in the end I decided to go for something a little bit different – I’m traditional but not that traditional - and ditched the usual white in favour of a champagne bridal gown with a sweetheart neckline decorated with crystals and beads; it fitted closely at the hips then flared out to a a-line shape. I customised my dress by adding a trail of crystals down the back. CONFETI 45

Romance Retro and Rock & Roll Rachael & James’ vintage vows
OUR STORY I met James two weeks before leaving for university at ‘Spiders’, a nightclub in Hull, but the proposal was much more romantic! James proposed at the top of Mount Kinabalu in Borneo at sunrise. We had been walking through the night to make it for sunset so, although it sounds romantic I think James was a little delirious from lack of oxygen, which is why he decided to pop the question! We never wanted a traditional wedding in England, so the laid back feel of Spain really appealed. We could just imagine being able to have the wedding outside, drinking sangria, eating paella, in the grounds of a beautiful villa with stunning views. Having a week of celebrations with all our friends and family was also a massive selling point. We wanted everyone to be able to re48 CONFETI
lax and feel that they were having a bit of a holiday as well as joining us for our big day. THE DETAILS We hired a villa in the hills about ten minutes drive from Frigiliana. It was shown to us by Jenny, the wedding planner and we loved its rustic charm. We had fallen in love with Frigiliana when staying there on holiday once and we knew all our friends and family would love it too. It was also a good location for our guests to access, since it is only about a 50-minute drive from Málaga airport. We managed to persuade 50 guests from the UK to fly out, which was amazing. Not wanting to go down the ‘traditional meringue’ route I chose a vintage 1950s dress that I found at a vintage wedding fair in Harrogate. It was the first one that I took off the rail and I knew it was the one. It fitted perfectly too, which

My aim was that they should look as if we had gone out and picked them on the day.
The service was very special and the setting, which took place in the courtyard, was just perfect; it couldn’t have been more magical. Then there was the first dance; we had been going to rock n’ roll classes but nobody knew, so the reaction from all of the guests was priceless and we had so much fun dancing to Johnny B Goode played by the amazing Red Tops. Match.com Sukhi and Tony’s, fun-filled multi-cultural three-day celebration took place in the breathtakingly beautiful Tamisa Golf Hotel in Mijas.
WHEN EAST MEETS WEST
IT STARTED WITH A KISS Tony and I met through a dating website; both of us had been in relationships before and had children. In 2011 we went to Rome and Tony proposed in a very romantic and touching way, overlooking a floodlit Colosseum. Tony had been coming to the Tamisa Golf Hotel in Mijas to play golf for over a decade and when I joined him in 2010 I saw first-hand the attention and planning that went into a Tamisa wedding, since two of their guests had chosen that time to marry. When Tony suggested we hold our wedding at Tamisa at first I wasn’t comfortable with asking people to travel all that way, but after speaking to family members who were delighted with the idea, we decided it was the perfect place to hold our Indian/English wedding.

As we are both from two very diverse cultures and backgrounds it was important that we included both in our special day. Neither of us had a particular style in mind, only that we wanted our guests to feel relaxed and comfortable and have an enjoyable time. So bearing in mind that we knew the temperatures would be very high in August, we started with the idea of Tony being in a light linen suit and worked everything else around that. John Peach, owner of the hotel, was a fount of wedding knowledge and was full of great ideas, many of which we incorporated into the day. It was essential that as many of our friends and family were involved in the wedding as possible, so our bridesmaids included our respective children, nieces, friends and family - seven in total! We also had a Maid of Honour, Matron of Honour, two pageboys and two best men, while my brother gave me away. We were keen to keep some of the traditional aspects of our
cultures so we decided that my dress would be of a customary Indian style and the rest would have a more western feel. I gave each of the bridesmaids a budget, colour swatch, minimum requirements and asked them to find a dress. The result was incredible; with a few
added touches we were blown away with the results. A MAGICAL JOURNEY As we had already guessed, nothing was too much trouble for John Peach and his famous words of ‘anything is possible’

were true. A fabulous three-day event was executed for 111 of our friends and family, with event co-ordination by Luchy. It started with a pre-wedding evening with henna, traditional Indian food and Bhangra, which finished at 4am on the Thursday. We were overwhelmed with the pre-wedding and henna party and some of Tony’s immediate family also decided to wear traditional Indian costumes, some of which were made especially for the occasion. It really was an incredible night. The actual wedding day on Saturday was officiated by our friend Rev. Cristhal Bennett who flew in from San Francisco. This was followed by a wedding banquet that can only be described as amazing and a reception, kicked off by DJ Laurie Scott. We loved the fact that he allowed our family and friends to join in as additional DJs and the party carried on until 5am.
The following day we held a thank you barbecue, which allowed our friends and family to relax while being serenaded by the breathtaking voice of Aaron Harding. We were also delighted with the special treat from the singer and musician, Dave Lee. WE WILL NEVER FORGET... There were so many moments that we will treasure forever, the first being that we had the

They all looked so beautiful and happy, so it was very emotional for me. Other key moments were seeing each other in our wedding finery for the first time, my brother giving me away, the blessing and all the speeches; this touched not just us but all our guests. The hardest part was saying goodbye to all our friends and family who had travelled from as far afield as England, the East and West Coast of America and India. We were still receiving texts and emails on their return saying what an amazing time they had and how sad they were to leave. I screeched, “Are you serious?” at him, followed up by a choice swearword or two. I did finally say yes and we celebrated with champagne. Richard had my ring custom made and I still can’t believe he got it so right. How many women can say that about their future husband? CHILDHOOD SWEETHEARTS We met for the first time when Richard was 16 and I was just 14. We were introduced through friends and kept in contact for a short while, but it fizzled out pretty quickly. A couple of years later, I was participating in a school debate at Richard’s school and he was one of the seniors designated to look after our team. We re-established contact after that and we’ve been together ever since. After I had completed my final exams in college, Richard took me away for to County Cork to celebrate. After a day spent shopping and a wonderful meal, we headed back to the 56 CONFETI
A SUNSHINE CELEBRATION We discussed a wedding abroad versus a wedding at home in Ireland. Both of our mothers had expressed that they would love for us to have a destination wedding and we eventually decided on Spain. From the start we felt that we would need to hire a wedding planner as I couldn’t face the thought of long distance planning by myself - particularly with a language barrier. There is a huge number of wedding planners across the Costa del Sol, but Lisa Franco of Bella Weddings in Spain stuck out from the get go. From her very first email, we got such a

good feeling about her. She seemed genuinely interested in us and our wedding and was eager to help. We flew to Spain in March to meet Lisa and view some venues. It was a particularly stressful time for us at that point as Richard’s dad was seriously ill and I had just started a new job, but Lisa was absolutely wonderful. She was warm and genuine and we liked her instantly. She made the whole process so enjoyable and easy. We knew straight away that she would have to be our planner. We wanted an outdoor ceremony, outdoor reception, privacy as much as was possible, great food and the right size for our 40 person guest list; the Gran Melia Don Pepe ticked all the boxes. We loved the hotel’s sleek, modern décor, the beautiful gardens, the pool, the solarium - everything really. We returned the next day for lunch and this just reaffirmed our decision. The food was absolutely fantastic and we’d never experienced such spectacular service. We returned once more for our menu tasting and the meal was, without a doubt, the best one we had ever had and we still talk about what a wonderful experience it was. We originally booked a garden ceremony followed by the cocktail hour and dinner on the Solarium, which was by the pool, overlooking the beach. A couple of weeks before the wedding, however, disaster struck as we discovered that the Solarium would no longer be available to us. Initially, we were very disappointed and panicked. Lisa, Ana (hotel’s Events Coordinator) and Maria (hotel’s Director of Sales) were absolute stars 58 CONFETI
though. They worked really hard to come up with an acceptable alternative. Subsequently, our wedding reception was held in the Penthouse Suite. It was the first wedding to be held here and it was nothing less than spectacular! When we arrived in Marbella the week of the wedding, we were brought straight to view the suite and we were just bowled over. It was so much better than we could have imagined and had everything that we had wanted for our wedding- outdoor space, view of the beach and sea (and what a view it was) plus total privacy. We were both thrilled. The day itself was amazing and the Don Pepe really pulled out all the stops. They arranged for a gazebo to be erected for our ceremony, our food was amazing and the Penthouse looked like something out of a dream. The most impressive aspect, however, was the service we
received from the hotel and its staff. All of our guests commented that they had never felt so important. We were treated like VIPs from the moment we arrived. Throughout the reception nobody had an empty glass. The staff members were friendly and courteous and the event managers/coordinators conducted themselves with pure professionalism. Truly it was a wonderful experience and we were so proud to have our guests attend such a magnificent event. We would really like to extend our sincerest thanks to the Don Pepe for everything. They made our day one nobody will ever forget. DRESS TO IMPRESS My dress was by Essence of Australia and was off-white with a heavily beaded lace bodice, Swarovski crystal detail at the bust and layered silk tulle skirt. It was elegant, but with a modern
twist. The skirt was my favourite part of the dress. As it moved beautifully and looked like layers of feathers. I wore it with a single layer cathedral length veil with crystal beaded edge, a crystal head band and peep-toe heels encrusted in crystals, by Benjamin Adams. I loved my shoes so much I actually bought them before I had even chosen my dress! I wore my hair half up with curls and wore my favourite hot pink for a splash of colour on my nails. THE PERFECT PALETTE We wanted something that felt very elegant and formal but that also still felt young and fresh. We chose lavender, light blue and white as our main colours with splashes of bright purples and pink. The blue was based on the colour of the Mediterranean and the lavender and pastel shades reminded us of the Spanish sky during sunset.

arrangements. Next to my bridal bouquet, the centrepieces were my favourite floral designs.
Our flowers were by Lisa Gisby and they were simply stunning. The bridal bouquet was made up of peonies, lisianthus, various roses and freesias in shades of pink with a touch of greenery. The bridesmaids had similar arrangements, except cool water roses replaced the peonies. Our centrepieces were just spectacular. They were made up of three cylindrical vases in varying heights with deep fuchsia floating orchids. The vases were surrounded by a floral ring with blooms matching the bridesmaids’ bouquets and ceremony
TALKING POINTS We put a lot of thought into how we wanted our wedding to look. We bought our own table overlays in light blue satin, cocktail table overlays and chair sashes in lavender satin and lavender linen napkins. We also provided decorative white birdcages for the area around the Jacuzzi. In addition, we designed and printed the entire stationery suite ourselves: this included menus, table numbers, place cards and table plan.
We had a custom made aisle runner hand painted with our monogram (which featured heavily in our stationery.) We had two of my younger cousins hand out silk fans and bubbles before the ceremony and at the reception there were baskets of flip flops for the guests - an addition of Lisa’s which went down a treat. Everyone loved them and some people were still wearing them on the beach days later. Our favourite detail by far was our favours. We had cupcakes iced to look like our dog, Lyla since she couldn’t be there on the day. These were set out by the lifts for people to take as
they made their way to the after party and they were very popular with the guests, let me tell you! My mother still has hers in the fridge and, of course, I took one home for the doggy herself. Everything was perfectly arranged and put together by Lisa and Michelle from Gorgeous Event Decoration. They did a smashing job. LET THEM EAT CAKE Our cake was created by Omaya at Cake Couture; not only do her cakes taste amazing, but she understood our vision from the outset. We had a three tier, offwhite cake with pale pink ribbon and sugar flower detailing. The bottom tier was a dummy tier, the middle was fresh raspberry sponge with vanilla butter cream and the top was chocolate with vanilla butter cream. The top
tier also featured a small oval monogram - a tiny detail but we absolutely loved it. Our wedding cake tasted so good that my grandmother took the leftovers home to Ireland with her on the plane MUSIC TO MY EARS We wanted to have live music during the ceremony and when Lisa sent us a list of performers we were immediately drawn to Pat Hernon a classical guitarist. He played during the ceremony and cocktail hour and the music was the perfect backdrop for the event. We walked in to ‘Make You Feel My Love’ while ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘Over the Rainbow’ were played during the service.
We walked back up the aisle to ‘Never Going Back’ - very fitting, don’t you think? We settled on a DJ for the reception and DJ Rob Humphries did a great job of getting everyone up on the dance floor. He was spot on when it came to judging the crowd and everyone had a ball. We had everything from Gangnam style to Riverdance and the dance floor was never empty. It was honestly one of our favourite parts of the day because the formalities were over and everyone really let their hair down. OUR FAVOURITE MOMENTS Steph: walking down the aisle, seeing the penthouse set up, my grandmother’s speech (she wrote a poem, which we’ve since had printed and framed), having photographs taken on the beach on our own and the after party. Richard: Steph walking down the aisle, cutting the cake, the speeches, the after party and greeting everyone after the ceremony. Our wedding was everything that we wanted and more. From start to finish it was absolutely perfect. It felt like a dream. If we had to do it all over again, we wouldn’t change a single thing.

Saud and Carlota on the same side of the lens OUR STORY
What he didn’t know is that I felt comfortable in his presence much more quickly than he suspected and had already really started to like him.
The whole thing began when Lisa, a friend of my sister’s, suggested that I show some pictures that a neighbour had taken of me to a photographer contact of hers called Saud. Lisa said that she had worked with Saud a long time ago and thought that he would be as enthusiastic about the photos as she was. In the end Lisa left with the pictures and said that she would pass them on to Saud. A few days later Lisa called me to tell me that she had spoken to Saud and he had said that I was a photogenic girl and he would like to meet me to do a test shoot. When the day for the test shoot arrived I felt very nervous and wondered what Saud would expect me to do and how I would manage to be the experienced 62 CONFETI
As in every love story there was an obstacle to overcome and, for me, that was to persuade Saud not to look on me as a model (that is, as part of his work) but as a woman who was very quickly becoming more and more attracted to him. This situation could have continued for a long time but fortunately I managed to get up the courage to tell him how I felt next time we met. It was such a relief to hear him say that he felt exactly the same. model that he maybe expected. My first impressions were that he was extremely assured and focused on what he was doing; clearly this was a man who knew how to do his job well. The other thing that struck me
was that he was very goodlooking! He immediately started to make me feel more comfortable about the whole experience by asking about my family and friends.
The proposal; when it came was not so much a great romantic declaration, more a mutual decision based on the fact that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together.
what to do and suggested companies whose services would best deal with all of the things that we wanted to achieve. The garden was lit with candles and white ribbons decorated the trees. A white helium balloon simulated the moon, introducing a warm and unique environment. The round tables were decorated with white tablecloths and linen and floral centerpieces made up with wildflowers brought in from Holland.
This doesn’t mean that there was no emotion attached to the occasion, though – and much to our delight, our families were so happy about our decision they carried on celebrating until well after the wedding! THE DETAILS The big thing for us was choosing somewhere that we would feel completely comfortable and at home, so Spain was really the only option, since we have lived here for most of our lives. because I wanted as many of them at our wedding as possible. Like many women I already had a dream dress in mind and what I wanted most of all was simplicity. Rather than traditional white I opted for a champagne coloured dress with some subtle embroidery; it featured a V-neck, a wrap and a mermaid style cut with a ‘tail’. Danielle and David enjoyed their whimsical real life fairytale wedding surrounded by their closest friends and family at that paragon of old school glamour, Villa Del Mar.
OUR STORY David and I first met in his local pub in in a picturesque village in Northamptonshire in 2008. I say ‘first met’ but we had actually worked together about five years earlier. Once that common link got us chatting there was no stopping us. Twelve months later David asked me to move in with him and our dog, Maddie, who we had adopted a couple of months earlier. In 2011, on a visit to our house in Spain, David proposed. He had been there on a golf trip with some friends and the day they flew home I flew out to take their place. Little did I know that the Best Man (to be) had taken the engagement ring from David a week before to make sure I didn’t find it and took it over in his hand luggage. David needed the space for the bottle of vintage Cristal that he had always promised we would have if we got engaged. He even put a bottle of Cristal and David on bended knee were waiting for me. Having been proposed to in Spain and knowing we would be guaranteed sunshine, it wasn’t a difficult decision to make; it had to be Spain. We had always loved the Marbella Club, especially the buffet, which we try to have every New Year’s Day and the occasional Sunday when we visit. When we viewed the Villa del Mar we just knew it was the perfect location for us. It was overwhelmingly beautiful with an almost rural charm, creating an intimate setting - just what we wanted.
Our theme was to be traditional English with Spanish touches but it was while we were choosing our wedding stationery in England from Made With Love that we (well, David really) came up with our colour choice. With the beautiful light blue of the sea and sky in Spain we knew this colour would work for us. When we saw this matched up with the hot pink the Made With Love had in some samples we just knew they combined perfectly. We followed these colours through from beginning to end – save the date cards, invites,
flowers, table plans and setting, table crystals, bridesmaid dresses and the groom’s and best man’s suit. My four adult bridesmaids wore the sky blue and the two flower girls wore the pink and even scattered the matching coloured petals as they walked before me down the aisle. We found the perfect blue linen suit for David on a day out in London. I had tried about 20 dresses on before I found mine. They were all lovely but none of them quite gave me (or my entourage of

mum and bridesmaids) the ‘Wow Factor’. When I walked into our local stockist of Ian Stuart dresses I knew I was going to find the one; this mother and daughter team made us feel so special. As soon as I put my dress on I knew it was ‘my dress’. It fitted the ‘English with Spanish touches’ theme perfectly with a well fitted, strapless top half down past my hips leading into a ruched flamenco design with a big flower to finish. I was just so relieved when my mum and bridesmaids were as overcome by it as I was. THE THREE-DAY EVENT As we had nearly 100 guests that were coming over from England to celebrate our big day with us, we wanted to make it a trip to remember. We started with a Golf Day/ Afternoon Tea on the Friday. David took himself and 23 others to Marbella Golf Club for a pre-wedding day competition. It was only right that David and his team won and the Best Man, Andrew, came

second! Thanks to a very generous friend from England and a lovely couple from Spain who run Itapu, one of our favourite bars, they even received awards. Not one to miss out, I decided I had to do something for the girls. Another of my favourite places, owned by a friend/guest at the wedding, La Sala seemed like the ideal place, most specifically the new, recently opened Terraza. With wonderful food, ever flowing cava from a cheeky butler and the Piano Man (Paul Maxwell) providing music a fabulous afternoon was had by all. With the golfers and other spouses joining us at 5pm it was a great opportunity for everyone to meet before the Big Day. The Wedding Day itself, cheesy as it sounds, could not have been better. The venue looked more beautiful than I had ever seen it.
Walking down the aisle, seeing my husband-to-be waiting and all of our family and friends smiling at me, will always be two of the most heart stopping minutes of my life. The ceremony was simple but beautiful. We chose Natasha, the Malaga Minister, as she was so relaxed and happy when we first met her and put us at ease. She explained that we could have our ceremony the way we wanted it and she would just help to guide us through. We kept our vows traditional while making personal pledges to give an individual touch. David’s eldest son Stephen and my brother Charlie gave readings, which further added to the occasion. We had an amazing harpist, Anna Sargeant, playing music for the guests before and after the ceremony, which gave the exact ambience we were looking for. After the photographs were taken we went through for dinner. Again, the venue had never looked so stunning. The evening sun sparkling off the pool and sea just dazzled me. Our event organisers, Nigel and Olivia from Chez Vous, had done an amazing job with all the spectacular lighting and dramatic effects. The buffet looked wonderfully appetizing, with everything from salads and fish and lobster to beef wellington and rack of lamb lined up on tables inside the villa. While we were eating we had booked Mr Maph featuring Simone to provide a relaxed background of soul music. Once the meal was
finished they carried on with some upbeat tunes and also our first dance, ‘Just The Way You Are.’ Now that everyone was then in the mood for dancing we continued the ‘traditional English with Spanish touches’ theme with the Gypsy Kings and their famous hits Bambaleo and Volare followed by a typical wedding disco. Again the lighting and sound system Chez Vous provided made the setting look exquisite, from the lighting in the trees to the spotlights on the tables and our initials in the pool. Just when I didn’t think the whole evening could get any more amazing we went to cut the cake. As we pushed down the spectacular sword that the venue provided into the cake, fireworks exploded over the sea. It was unforgettable and I had no idea the lengths David and Chez Vous had gone to. Many of us agreed that it was the most extraordinary display that we had ever seen. The Olympics opening ceremony had nothing on this! We decided that the next day we wanted an informal evening party. Having been to Tikitano before, we had been very impressed with the food and stunned by the dramatic views. We started the evening with welcome sangrias whilst enjoying flamenco dancers and a Spanish guitarist, arranged by Dyana Dessar Simmons. After a delicious, laid-back barbecue buffet we all enjoyed another of Dyana’s acts, Peet Rothwell’s Michael Bublé tribute act, ‘Call Me Irresistible’, starring Peet as the Canadian singer accompanied by a swing band. This was ideal for our second dance, as we chose The Way You Look Tonight. Peet sang

it better than Michael himself, as many of the guests said throughout the night. Although we thought everyone might have been a bit jaded from Saturday we all carried on well into the night, dancing and chatting. TREASURED MOMENTS As I arrived at the gates of the Villa del Mar I had a glimpse of all the guests and my husband-to-be gazing expectantly for me to arrive. Emotions got the better of me at that point. The sudden realisation of all the planning my amazing fiancé (now husband!) had put into making this the perfect day for me and the effort all our guests had made to be there just blew me away. Stephen Bitti and Santiago Alcon Camas met eight years ago at a bar in central London. The couple recently married at a very public, multilocation ‘destination’ wedding in Tarifa, España.

The year of preparations for their four-day wedding celebration culminated in 80 guests joining them in Tarifa on Friday 24th May for an evening welcome reception with traditional flamenco at Bar Almedina. What other way to set the mood for the weekend? A TOUCH OF ROMANCE
OUR STORY Welsh born Stephen’s proposal to Santiago was typically romantic. After arriving home one morning, laden with bags from a local supermarket, he got down on both knees, a move, he says smiling, he regretted, as he then needed help to get back up.
Why Spain for the wedding when they both live in the United Kingdom? Stephen explained that this decision was made because, under Spanish law, as gay men they could legally marry each other in a civil ceremony, whereas in the UK (at that time) they could only obtain a civil partnership. They chose Tarifa because Santiago is from Jerez and the couple fell in love with Tarifa while travelling around Andalucía one summer. The other reason was because, as hopeless romantics, Tarifa is where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, which symbolically mirrors their relationship.

The big day began with a family wedding brunch (the British meeting the Spanish for the first time) at Delicatessen in Plaza de Oviedo and then the civil wedding ceremony itself took place late afternoon on Playa de Los Lances. Guests gathered in front of Iglesia de San Mateo, the main church of Tarifa in the Province of Cadiz, and were then transported on the Tarifa tourist train to the beach, followed closely by the wedding couple in a beautiful 1930s Ford open top car. Upon arrival at the beach, a boardwalk was used to simulate the aisle of a church, the boys always wanted a very public expression of their love for each other and that’s what they achieved, surrounded by Stephen’s gorgeous three-year old goddaughter Hannah Joy who acted as their flower girl, family, friends and local Tarifeños.

While the wedding certificates were signed and witnessed, guests were refreshed and entertained by a Spanish guitarist at A Tu Aire, a chiringuito directly behind the ceremony on the beach. This and the other chosen locations provided excellent photographic opportunities for photographer friends charged with capturing the event and they didn’t waste a moment. There were thousands of photographs taken and we are delighted to be able to share a small selection with you. VENUE WITH A VIEW Next stop for the wedding party was a ride out of Tarifa to Cortijo Pelayo, a beautiful mountainside estate in the Parque Natural del Estrecho. The couple chose this location for their wedding celebration meal upon the recommendation of their wedding planner, Emily Brown, owner of Tarifa Weddings. The guys were convinced as soon as they saw it during a pre-wedding visit in April. With unprecedented views over the National Park, Gibraltar and across the straits (where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea) onto the mountains of Africa, this place was just perfect. Santiago recalls some of the challenges of planning for a multi-location wedding. Guests were warned to pack designer shades and sandals for the beach but to make sure they brought shoes for the rest of the party as they would be dancing the night away in the mountains. Dance they did until 4:30am, but not before enjoying cocktails with canapés and a suitably fabulous dinner created by Chef José Gil Luna of Los Olivos Restaurant, all served with impeccable attention to detail by the Tarifa Weddings team atop the terraced gardens of the Cortijo as the sun set over the stunning vistas.

car outside San Mateo. Quite a crowd of onlookers had gathered along the roadside in front of the church and as the grooms arrived the crowd began shouting best wishes and chanted “Que se besen, que se besen!” (meaning “Kiss each other, kiss each other!”’) Naturally, Stephen and Santiago obliged to rapturous applause and cheers. One of their favourite moments were, when during the after dinner speeches, Hannah Joy, their flower girl sang Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, with everyone joining in the last few lines - and who could forget the magical effect of the full moon, illuminating the Straits of Gibraltar while contented guests danced in the Cortijo gardens on an illuminated dance floor until the early hours of the morning? FOUR DAYS OF FUN Tarifa of course is the southernmost part of Spain, where the mountains tower over the virgin coastline of the Costa de la Luz. World-famous for its wind and kite surfing, it is the ideal spot for combining a laid-back holiday with active sports, a day trip to Tangier, Morocco or a visit to
the delightful, typical Spanish white villages of Arcos and Medina de Sidonia nearby. Sunday was named ‘recovery day’. Guests did whatever they wished until the evening, when everyone met for a chill-out supper at the host hotel, La Sacristia on San Donato. The building itself dates back to the XVII century and is situated in the heart of the old town of Tarifa. The house has been renovated and converted into a comfortable boutique hotel with charming style. Stephen and Santiago fell in love with it when they first discovered Tarifa. The four-day celebrations culminated with Monday, named ‘activity day’ for those that wanted to take a day trip excursion to Tangier, followed by the farewell supper at Souk Restaurant in Tarifa, which served up delicious tables of Moroccan and Asian-inspired food. After a brief return to London, the BittiAlcons honeymooned in Italy, taking in the art, culture and other Grand Tour sights of Rome, Florence and Venice. “A perfect end to a perfect wedding” said artist Santiago Alcon. There was a whole selection of guys at this party, but Martin caught my eye. A couple of hours into the night, he approached me with a cheesy chat up line and we kissed. November, Martin came home from work and suggested we go down to the beach and have a picnic. So I packed the esky (cool-box) with loads of fruit and sandwiches. We sat on our blanket enjoying the sun on a lovely Mackay afternoon listening to the sounds of the ocean. I decided to jump up and start writing in the sand, which is a tradition of mine every time I get to a beach. Unknown to me, Martin was writing in the sand behind me and after a while said, “Andrea, come see what I’ve written.’’ It turned out that he had written ANDREA WILL YOU MARRY ME? He went down on one knee, took out this amazing ring, told me he loved me and asked me to marry him! I was in tears the minute I realised what was happening and had to reassure him they were

I suppose our main reason for choosing Spain was the prospect of having everyone around us for a whole week. Since we are now living in Australia we only came home for four weeks, so having all our family and everyone we love dearly in a lovely relaxed atmosphere with the sun shining was just ideal for us. A smaller wedding size was what we wanted too and knew that it would
never happen in Ireland. The day after Martin and I arrived in Spain we both looked at each other and said ‘This is definitely the best decision we ever made’ and it was completely true. The sun shone for the whole week and everyone was in great spirits - what more could you ask for? Also we were very lucky to have a week-long celebration and not just one day! THE VENUE As a child my parents brought me on holidays to Sunset Beach quite often. Living in Australia, we really had to rely on pictures, video clips and recommendations to get an idea of what places were like, so knowing first hand what Sunset Beach was like was just perfect for us! My family had never experienced any problems with Sunset Beach
in all the times we had been there and knew the standard of the hotel. With the economy being so bad too it was very re-assuring to know that they are part of the FBD Group and therefore bonded. Our day was magical, all the staff members at the hotel were wonderful, the day went without any hitches and I was truly made to feel like a princess for our special day. My favourite part was the drinks reception on the promenade, which was truly AMAZING. Who would have thought on January 10th the weather would be in the mid twenties? The backdrop of the ocean was just phenomenal. The barbecue we held the next day was the icing on the cake, the food was fantastic and the staff meticulously prepared the setting for us. Kerry was a godsend too; having to organise a wedding in Spain from Australia wasn’t an easy task. I would recommend the hotel and Kerry to anyone thinking of having a wedding there. I will never have a week again like it, ever again in my life. THE DRESS When my parents came to visit us in Australia in April 2012 my mother and I set out dress shopping. I was worried I might not find anything in Mackay, with it being a small town and Martin was willing to send us off to Sydney if needs be, but fortunately it didn’t come to that. Our first day was non-eventful; because I didn’t have an actual style in mind I tried seven
dresses in different styles, but there was one that I kept coming back to. A couple of days later we went into another dress shop, I tried on five dresses this time and had no luck. Feeling a bit deflated I was ready to leave when the shop assistant said, “I have one here! Can you please try this on?”. Looking at it in the bag, I hesitated. It was champagne and ivory, which was not what I had in mind. I said, “No. I’m tired. I’ll come back another day.” That would have been that, but my Mam said, “No, Andrea – just try it on!” It sounds like such a cliché, but when I got into that dress, something inside me felt so right, I walked out and Mam started crying and said, “That’s the one!” I felt it too. From there on in, it was sealed. I had found the dress of my dreams!
THE BIG DAY IN A NUTSHELL Walking up the aisle with my Dad by my side was breathtaking, it was something I had always imagined but I wasn’t prepared for the emotion. It was a special moment for the two of us that we will always treasure. Our first kiss was amazing, we felt like we had accomplished so
much after the months of planning; drinks on the promenade with the amazing backdrop and letting balloons go to symbolise our new beginning was a very surreal feeling. Listening to Martin’s speech, him telling my parents that he would always look after me was also amazing. I really could go on forever, because the whole day was so memorable...

FROM
Brazil Love WITH
By Louise Cook Edwards
The exuberance of Brazilian tropical island Ilhabela was the stunning backdrop to the glamorous and inspiring wedding experience enjoyed by Aguilene Benicio and Tom McNab and their international guests.
For beautiful Brazilian Aguilene Benicio, love sailed into her life back in 2008 when a chance meeting in Alicante with Tom McNab, a handsome New Zealander who captains a luxury yacht, would change her destiny forever. The couple fell in love, and embarked on a journey that would involve various romantic rendezvous in exotic locations before getting engaged in 2012 and setting up home in Marbella where Aguilene enjoys the high life with her property company, Elite Estates Marbella. 74 CONFETI
When it came to planning their dream wedding, Tom and Aguilene wanted to bring their closest family and friends together in an unforgettable environment. For world travellers, with family at opposite ends of the globe, this decision could pose a problem… However, Aguilene felt there was one special location in her native Brazil that eclipsed all others the sublime island of Ilhabela. “There is a certain magic you feel when you step on the island, and I wanted to share it with all the special people in our lives.”
Ilhabela, which in Portuguese means ‘beautiful island’, is a paradise isle just four miles off the Coast of Sao Paolo. A wild, unspoilt haven, Ilhabela is practically nothing but protected nature, lush with jungles, waterfalls, heavenly beaches and exotic flora and fauna. With guests flying in from New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, Spain, Argentina, China, England and Australia, coordinating everything was no mean feat. Tom and Aguilene’s professional experience
in travel and events was a huge advantage, while their friends’ burning desire to be there did the rest. TOTAL EXPERIENCE The couple wanted their wedding guests to experience all the magic of the island, creating an unforgettable week-long wedding experience, including spending time at two stunning hotels, a beach-hopping boat ride to Praia da Fome and Praia do Sino, fun hen and stag nights, and time to
mingle and soak in the bliss. A crescendo of feel-good emotions was steadily building up throughout the week, as the wedding approached. The wedding venue itself, Solar Singuita, is unspeakably romantic and towers above rival options, literally! A haven of understated glamour perched high on the cliffs at the tip of the island, this boutique hotel enjoys bird’s eye panoramic views across the ocean and nestles under the shade of dozens of swaying palms. With just 12 sumptuous suites, warm colonial style decor, wooden decking, hammocks and a circular pool, it accommodated most of the wedding guests and became the glorious setting for the prenuptial celebrations as well as a divine backdrop to the wedding ceremony.

OUR STYLE On the actual wedding day, Tom and Aguilene hired three Brazilian girls to manage the decor, wedding feast etcetera. “It was a bit of a challenge, as we didn’t want a traditional Brazilian wedding, but we reined in their ideas and it all worked out fine…” reveals Tom. As for the theme, Aguilene explains, “The natural beauty of Solar Singuita was inspiration enough for the style of the wedding, so we kept the decoration simple, natural and at the same time beautiful. We choose white flowers, and our lovely decorator Isaias Ribeiro, added a touch of orange, which he said suited my “fiery” personality!! The result in the colonial style dining room was a vision in white, green, warm peach and flickering candles... The effect was soft and romantic... The light and airy space was transformed with exuberant displays of tropical flowers; the whole place was blooming, just like the bride. GETTING READY… For Aguilene, the day started with 76 CONFETI
a lovely breakfast, followed by an amazing massage given by good friend Steffi, one of the bridesmaids. “After that I had a long jacuzzi, before getting ready. My hair and make-up were done by my dear friend Esther who came all the way from Marbella which made me feel very special indeed! My dress by Eva & Santos in Marbella was figure-hugging and ultrafeminine. Before the ceremony I enjoyed a glass of champagne with my friends to relax me before the big moment!” Meanwhile for Tom, “The time just flew by leading up to the Big Day, with all the family and friends around, so I had to finish my vows and speech in the morning. That done, I had time to enjoy the tranquility of the location. I was entertained by parrots in the tree outside my window and eagles soaring below our terrace until the lads started to arrive, all done up in their wedding garb. It was a stroke of genius that the champagne was stored in my room! This predictably led to the premature opening of a few bottles to share will the boys during dress-up time, followed by a few photos. And, of course, plenty of advice and ‘Fatherly’ chats.”
THE CEREMONY When it came to the Big Day, the pool area was miraculously transformed into a magical location for the ceremony with simple benches to seat the guests, boxes of exuberant white flowers and swathes of white cloth to frame the couple and the celebrant with garlands of white flowers on the altar… The ceremony took place on the wooden decking close to the swimming pool, with the water sparkling in the sunlight. Starting at 4pm, the timing aimed to take full advantage of the stunning sunset for photos of the bride and groom after the ceremony, while guests enjoyed relaxed cocktails on the terrace. Susie, the celebrant, is a close friend of Tom’s family. “This meant we were able to break from tradition and do the blessing our way.” The ceremony was conducted in English, not Portuguese, so most of Agui’s family couldn’t understand. However, for us, Susie’s presence gave the ceremony an intimate feel.
Guests partied on ‘til the early hours, with everyone enjoying the sounds spun by well-known Marbella-based DJ Mario Zarate. “I love the energy he brings with him to each occasion” Aguilene enthuses.
“With the vows, It didn’t feel right to recite something traditional, especially with all the religious bits. We already knew each other intimately and had shared a lot together. I’m probably not the world’s best communicator about my “feelings” so my vows were an opportunity to say all those nice things to Aguilene in public and make her feel special.”
We loved having the whole of Solar Singuita to ourselves, which meant we could have an “After Wedding Pool Party”! Two days after the wedding, 30 of the guests continued on to Rio de Janeiro where the party vibe continued… MOST TREASURED MOMENTS
TIME TO CELEBRATE Tom was glad to be involved in the menu tasting for the wedding feast, as there were quite a few suggestions to be made. “The catering company didn’t quite understand our requests. We wanted European style food with Brazilian ingredients” The final six course menu was spectacular comprising a Salad with Walnuts and Mango; Mandarin Sorbet; Cannelloni with Pumpkin and Brie; Sea Bass or Fillet of Beef, served with “Mandioquinha”; Meringue and two Berries and a Tropical Fruit Platter. There was a huge table of exquisite desserts surrounded by fabulous flowers and candles, it was simply breathtaking. The meal concluded with the cutting
of a 3-tiered cake featuring figurines of Tom & Aguilene, which ended the feast on a sweet note along with the excitement of fireworks! At the ceremony, champagne - the ultimate luxury in Brazil - was flowing thanks to a stroke of pure genius, and Tom & Agulene’s generosity of spirit. The logistics of guests bringing wedding gifts was complicated, and online stores could present language barriers, so they requested everyone bring dutyfree champagne instead. “The prohibitive price of champagne in Brazil made this an attractive option all round,” said Tom, adding ”after all, it’s what everyone wants to drink!”
When Aguilene appeared descending the stairs on the arm of her father, Paradise by Coldplay was the couple’s chosen wedding song. “We wanted something different, and had been searching for weeks…. This song will give us goose bumps forever more… The couple’s first dance was, appropriately to The Girl from Ipanema... Tom was relieved, saying, “It was nice to hear Aguilene say that I did alright because that was by far the most dreaded part of the day for me.” Tom also said, “The speeches were great, but I especially liked my brother’s (best man) as he managed to make Aguilene cry by by telling her how much of an idiot I was until she came into my

The hotel surprised us by adorning the room with red rose petals and candles… It was a lovely surprise for the nuptial night! CONFETI 77

MEANT TO BE…
We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. Who would have known that 17 years later, I would be married to him! Bhavesh and I met again after some years at a fitness centre and we recognised each other straight away. apart and we became quite busy in our own lives but we would call each other now and again over the years just to catch up until one day we decided to meet, enjoying each others company so greatly we began to spend more and more time together before falling completely and utterly in love. Two years later, we had been well acquainted with each other’s family and friends and we had been on a few holidays together and we were definitely ready to take the next step in our relationship. It was just a case of him popping the question. Last September we

went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me
because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do. It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had known each other. He then suddenly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I turned around to see what he was pointing at, and as I looked down, a light shone on to the rocks where there was a sign that read, ‘Marry Me?’. I then turned back around to see that Bhavesh had got down on one knee! He told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life and more with me

morning, the blessing ceremony in the afternoon followed by cocktails and the reception party into the night. All were outdoors, the weather was amazing and all this infused with the surroundings and the ‘buzz’ our guests came with made it truly the best wedding, I myself, had ever been to, and I still can’t believe that it was my own.
We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.
I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.
ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…
The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain! I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

ith temperatures soaring, many brides will be panicking about how to keep cool during their big day. Pretty hand fans, Bali style parasols, fruit infused jugs of water are all great ideas, but spare a thought for your wedding flowers. Many flowers do not cope well in hot weather, especially the delicate cottage garden style flowers that are regularly used in bouquets. Jane, from Flor Valentin offers advice on what you can do to help protect your bouquet and other wedding flowers from wilting in the heat.
Fresh
Avoid A Wedding Bouquet Burnout In The Heat
“A good florist will do everything they can to protect your flowers before the bride receives them but once the flowers have arrived there are some extra things you can do to help keep them fresh as long as possible.” Here are a few top tips that will help avoid a wedding day floral disaster: The bouquets should be delivered to you standing in a little water so they are drinking for as long as possible. They can be removed from the water at the last possible moment for ultimate freshness, making sure to wipe dry to prevent drips. Keep the bouquets in the coolest area possible such as a garage, or possibly the bathroom in a hotel room, but never a fridge! Always keep flowers away from direct sunlight and protect them from hairspray – some flowers wilt on contact with hairspray. This is especially relevant if flowers are being added to the hair. Avoid having the gents buttonholes delivered to a house where they attach them and then merrily head off to the pub, where a buttonhole will slowly toast as they sit in the sun. Instead, arrange 80 CONFETI
for them to be delivered to a cool church or store room at the venue, where they can be popped on as the groom and his chaps arrive, extending the life of the buttonhole significantly. After the ceremony, the bridal bouquets should be placed back in water so they can start drinking again; the florist can place vases of water on a mantelpiece, window ledge or even along the top table. The bouquets can be popped into them on arrival at the venue so the
bouquets remain fresh and are on display throughout the wedding breakfast. On the day after the wedding, some of the flowers in pedestals or table centre displays may look past their best, but if you’re planning on giving them to guests, they may well come back to life with a little help. Hydrangeas respond very well to having their whole head dunked in water and an inch or so cut off their stem - it is miraculous how a totally shrivelled head can perk up overnight.
Displays in floral foam will need regular topping up with water and it may be worth taking them out of the foam, cutting an inch of every stem and placing them in a vase. Do remember though that all flowers have been conditioned to be at their absolute best on the day of the wedding itself which may mean they don’t have a long time left after the day itself. florvalentin.es

hen Pamela Anderson married her first husband Tommy Lee, they had their wedding bands tattooed on their fingers instead of traditional gold bands. When Dawn Porter married her husband, Hollywood actor Chris O’Dowd, last year she took the ‘O’ of his name and is now known as Dawn O Porter. And when Keira Knightley married her beau James Righton earlier this year, she wore an above-the-knee tulle wedding dress and ballet pumps. So, what is the point of all of these
82 CONFETI
examples, I hear you ask? The point is that these few examples reveal the increasing trend that many celebrities and noncelebrities alike are embracing, by tearing up the rulebooks on marriage, stepping away from traditions and championing the idea of making their marriage their own unique celebration. Why break from tradition? Of course there is nothing wrong with the traditional aspects of a wedding and many of them provide beautiful meaning to the proceedings. As society progresses and modernizes at such a rapid
rate, many couples feel the need to evoke traditional aspects of weddings to keep those historical sentiments alive and to replicate what many brides and grooms before them have done, whilst some maintain the traditions to keep the in-laws happy! But in the same way that society is changing and giving people more freedom of choice than they have ever had, many couples feel that there is no need to hanker for the traditional and that marrying without traditional elements does not mean that a wedding is of any less value
or meaning. And because marriage traditions are just that and have no legal basis, there is absolutely no reason why you can’t do away with whatever traditions you want. Father’s day? So to begin with, let’s take a look at the wedding ceremony itself. The average wedding ceremony is steeped in lots of ceremonial traditions and rituals. And it probably comes as no surprise to find that, although many people don’t actually know why the tradition exists, they still feel they should follow the trend. A ceremony usually starts with
together and in many peoples’ reality a father is not really giving away his daughter to anyone, since she is not anyone’s to give away! Some women obviously just love the simple idea that their “daddy” is walking them down the aisle and leading them into their new union and that is, of course, understandable. There are many ways, however, to honour fathers throughout a wedding day, such as letting them make a speech or give a reading during the ceremony. And what about our mothers? Why not allow the very woman who gave birth to the brideto-be and who is as much a representative of the family as a father is, walk her daughter down the aisle or to have both parents walk their daughter down the aisle? It does certainly give you something to think about.
a beautiful bride and a proud father. This tradition stems from the times when the father was the head of the household and he was the one tasked with giving away his daughter to another family, which is why his permission was sought to marry the bride in the first place. There are many lovely aspects to this, but nowadays it can be seen as an inappropriate or unnecessary way to start a ceremony. For instance, many women do not feel that being given away by their father is an action that represents their current way of living or their way of thinking. Most couples already live
Don’t take sides Other examples of breaking with tradition during a ceremony include making sure that your wedding guests don’t take sides. Isn’t a wedding, after all, about the joining of two families and the coming together of friends? So to carry on with what, to some, seems quite a divisive move could be a mistake; why not think of doing away with this tired old custom? There is also the issue of the best man. Many grooms have a best woman, who is usually a daughter or a sister or a close female friend who they would rather support them than anyone else. And, why not? The idea, perhaps, is that all options should be accommodated and not just the traditional ones. And what about facing your wedding guests during your ceremony, or at least standing sideways to them, so that the husband and wife-to-be are facing each other? Unless you are having a church ceremony, which demands that you face the altar, there is no reason why during a civil or other non-religious ceremony that this has to be done. You wouldn’t stand with your back to your guests at a party, so why would you do so at your wedding? Hymns can also be replaced with your favourite songs, especially in nonreligious ceremonies and vows can be written by yourselves in addition to any that a celebrant, vicar or priest will ask of you.
A great reception If you really are a stickler for all things traditional, then maybe the wedding reception is where you can dare to make a few changes to the norm. The traditional top table could perhaps become a feature of the past, especially as more and more families are now made up of step-relations. For some it simply is not an easy option to have their parents sitting with them on a top table, when their mother or father’s respective partners are forced to sit elsewhere, perhaps with people they don’t know. Why have a top table at all? Why not sit with good friends and other relations or - depending on what kind of reception venue you have - you could design seating arrangements in a way that is more inclusive of everyone Another tradition, which the feminists among the brides will surely agree with are the traditional wedding speeches. Why does the bride traditionally remain silent and not make her own humorous and loving
contributions? More and more women are beginning to take umbrage at this sexist tradition and now pen their own thoughts on why their groom is lucky to have them! And as for the father-of-the-bride speech, again this can be turned on its head and maybe a motherof-the-bride speech could be substituted, especially if dad has already walked the bride down the aisle. So when Pamela Anderson had her wedding ring tattooed on to her finger, although the marriage subsequently did not last, at least we can see that the intention at the time was to seal her commitment with a life long symbol of her marriage, making that promise in a unique way. And when Dawn Porter became Dawn O Porter she didn’t bend with tradition and discard her own name but looked at different ways to embrace both names and when Keira Knightley donned her short wedding dress and flat shoes, she recognised that beautiful doesn’t always have to be traditional. ASIAN FUSION
He & She By Padre Peter
T
he opening of a delightful restaurant called TUK TUK in Nueva Andalucia, Marbella shows how a fusion of differing asian cooking styles can work. This is also true of marriage customs, and the injection of a Japanese or Chinese tradition can often add a little spice to the occasion! (I have to confess, though, that on one occasion when dealing with a Japanese bride I was slightly nonplussed when she began talking about her “beiru”. It then transpired that she meant her “veil”, but as Japanese has no “v” and has similar problems with “l”, we were left with an approximation to the Lebanese capital). In both countries much is made of the engagement or betrothal period before the actual ceremony itself. In China the date of this is carefully selected by consulting the Tong Shu (Chinese Almanac). A “good” date is essential for the marriage to succeed. Such success is also mirrored by the gifts presented by the groom’s parents to the bride’s parents when the engagement is announced. Tea leaves are the most important item, as traditionally they represent the wish of the couple’s parents for as many children and descendants as possible, although in modern China this has become something of a purely symbolic gesture! A special type of cake is also presented – the dragonphoenix cake – together with various sweetmeats and often a cock and a hen. This subtle hint is rather more blatant in Japan, where the betrothal gifts include dried cuttlefish (on account of its phallic shape), and kelp (as the character “konbu” can be written to signify child-bearing woman). These gifts are ceremoniously presented at a ceremony called the “yunio”. Invitations to the wedding ceremony in China are printed on red paper. This is the colour for hap-

piness. The couple are probably even happier when they receive the “Red Envelopes” tucked into the bedding of their new bed. They need to sleep in a brand new bed after marriage, bought by the groom’s family, with the bedding provided by the bride’s. Nobody is allowed to sit or lie on the bed, apart from babies and children. The “Red Envelopes” are stuffed with money, and whilst the amount given by well wishers may vary, it must end with a “9”. This number stands for “long lasting” in Chinese tradition. A similar envelope is given by the groom to the bridesmaids and other helpers when he and his groomsmen go to the bride’s house to fetch her to the wedding. Whilst waiting for him, the bride will have served tea to her parents in a simple ceremony to express her thanks to them for their love and care. 86 CONFETI
After the ceremony both the bride and the groom serve tea to the groom’s parents, together with lotus seeds and two red dates. This tea has been prepared by a “lucky woman”, and is served on their knees. The parents then give a “Red Envelope” to the newly weds and to the “lucky woman”.This little ceremony is then observed before all the elders in the family. Whilst tea is equally important in Japan, it is sake, or rice wine, which forms a central part of the Shinto marriage ritual. This is ritually shared by bride and groom from three flat cups each stacked upon the other. During the ceremony a Japanese bride will wear a white silk wedding kimono. This custom dates back to the Edo period (17001900). Unlike the Chinese bride, who will probably wear red, white symbolises both a new beginning and an ending, as the bride “dies” to her own family, and is reborn into her new one. Her face will be painted creamy white, and a white cloth and veil (beiru?!) will cover
her head. During the ceremony she will change her clothes several times, at one point donning the elaborate deep-coloured highly patterned kimono reserved for unmarried women, as this is the last time that she will be able to wear it. A favourite colour for weddings is purple, as this is the colour for love. For this reason irises are a favourite flower used for decoration. The groom will wear a black kimono, bearing his family “Mon” (crest) in white in five different places. He will carry a white fan, and wear white sandals. In both China and Japan the food served at the conclusion of the ceremony is of the highest importance. Until recently in China it was the most respected ritual of all. During the feast the couple would circumnavigate the room, either going from left to right, or vice-versa, but never retracing their steps. Quite often the groom would carry the bride, to signify that he will support her for the rest of their lives. In Japan the main emphasis is on the food itself. Each dish is a symbolic wish. Kelp is served because the word “konbu”, quite apart from its resemblance to a child-bearing
woman, also sounds like the last syllable of the word “yorokobu”, which means Joy. The fish is served with head and tails lifted from the surface of the plate to symbolise a circle – the symbol of eternity. Clams, with two shells, signify the couple. Shellfish, especially lobster, are red, which symbolises Luck. But one must never serve a number of courses whose number will equal a multiple of four, as “shi”, the word for four, is very similar to the word for Death. Customs vary in various parts of both countries, as is to be expected, but increasingly “western style” weddings are becoming increasingly popular. This is due to a variety of reasons, but one factor is the increasing penetration of western television. Quite apart from this, western weddings tend to be far less expensive than their oriental counterparts, and are far less tiring. The constant changes in dress for the Japanese bride need her to be quite fit, whilst the Japanese groom’s outfit alone can cost the equivalent of 1500€ to hire, and requires professional assistance to put it on!

Fay’s Big Day
F
ollowing a very romantic and high altitude engagement on the 64th floor of the Lebua State Tower in Bangkok last December, Mark and Fay Wallis decided to escape from Marbella with daughter Jazmin to make their wedding vows to one another. They opted for a very low key but intimate affair in the UK with close family and the plan was then to celebrate in a more lavish way with friends back home here in Spain. However, defying the medical odds, Fay fell pregnant with the future Little Miss Wallis so their planned three- day wedding party has been postponed until after baby is born, when they will have a daughter as well as a marriage to celebrate! Mark personally designed Fay’s engagement ring with the bespoke British jeweller, Hot Pink and they then designed their wedding bands together to ensure they were unique.

WHEN
Wedding Photography BECOMES
Art
We love the fact that more and more photographers out there are pushing the boundaries with style, technical creativity and post-production artistry. At the click of the shutter button they create contemporary art, transforming the bride into a vision of a model from the pages of Vogue. With an increase in couples favouring images of the unstyled and unplanned moments of their wedding, rather than the prescribed agenda of highly organized groups of people staring at the camera, there really are no limits to creativity. We like to call it ‘Fearess Bridal.’ Don’t settle for the average photographer unless average photos are exactly what you’re after. This is your wedding - go for it! Be adventurous and be creative with your photos.
