Oscar de la Renta The S/S 2012 bridal collection didn’t disappoint. Chantilly lace sheaths, lavishly ruffled ball gowns, feminine trumpet silhouettes and romantic veils just reaffirmed why he is such a couture icon. Seemly inspired by nature, details included cascading leaf and petal appliquÊ, a moss green bridal sash and an ivy-hued, tulle bolero. The mood of the show was youthful and ethereal, with many of the dresses shown not in traditional white but cotton candy pink and blue hues. ollowing the success of his capsule spring 2010 line of wedding dresses designed for Net-a-Porter, Matthew Williamson has launched his own debut bridal collection. In this interview he talks to Nicola McGeorge about his first wedding gown, dressing Sienna Miller and creating a green wedding dress.
38 CONFETI
I decided to create a bridal collection because… Many fashion conscious brides-to-be were selecting dresses from my main collection. I understand a bride needs to look a million dollars, so I have had to raise my game and consider every last detail, from the interior of the dress to the way she feels when wearing it. I love that challenge.
My first bridal dress was… For my older sister Andrea, 11 years ago. Funnily enough I made a bridal dress before anything else. She’s totally not into fashion. She’s a district nurse in Manchester. It was a champagne, duchesse-stain dress with an organza frock coat, embroidered with butterflies and dragonflies. Looking back it wasn’t very me, but it was very her.
My 2011 collection… Required significant craftsmanship, including fine embroidery, ornate beading and the use of luxurious natural fabrics such as a buttermilk-coloured, silk, satin dress printed with a hand-painted, abstract, wintry scene accomplished through a burn-out technique. There are also more relaxed styles such as the sheer, ivory maxi dress with a plunging neckline and ruffle skirt; a sophisticated take on a kaftan embellished with Swarovski crystals for beach bound brides.
I particularly love… The feathered wedding dress. It’s very dramatic in an elegant way. If that dress fits you, then you’d look a million dollars. You need a lot of height and quite a small frame so it is not for everyone.
I am known for… My use of colour, therefore I found it refreshing not to have colour for the bridal collection. I have to say that when I first walked into my showroom and saw the whole bridal collection hanging up, I was so proud of it. It felt so beautiful for its purity. However, as the bridal line develops I can see us introducing some colour.
For 2012 I can see… More print evolving in the dresses in a delicate and tonal way. It fits with the brand’s sense of escapism and bohemia. The bride that we hopefully attract lives out that lifestyle and isn’t focused so much on looking like a pristine doll. The bridal line is more earthy, flighty and whimsical. Pattern and colour could fit into that. CONFETI 39
In my boutique… The VIP sales manager and stylist will be on hand for brides-to-be. The bridal collection is available side by side with the main line. If it becomes more popular we’ll rethink this.
I haven’t forgotten about… The bridesmaids. We have put a few dresses on the rail with bridesmaids in mind – the little vintage numbers. A couple of gowns are shorter, which would be a good look for bridesmaids.
People would be surprised to know that… I do not try to plant my vision on a bride. Kelis’ brief was that she wanted her wedding dress to be the colour of white grapes. So I showed her different green swatches thinking she might like one of them, but she said, “I want them all in the dress.” It was crazy, but it didn’t surprise me. Kelis and I are good mates – I’ve known her for 15 years. We met after I played her first album, and I thought, “This sounds how my clothes look. I have to meet this girl.” This rarely happens; I felt it with Jade Jagger and Sienna Miller. I love that attitude of, “I’m not going to go with the rules,” even if she ends up in a “worst-dressed” column. Kelis’ wedding dress was an unabashed bizarre vision that she had to wear.
I would love to… Make Jade and Sienna’s wedding dresses one day.

Award-winning celebrity hairdresser RICHARD WARD is one of the industry’s leading lights, and the media’s ‘most wanted’ hairdresser. Richard and his colleague James Pryce were responsible for Catherine Middleton’s hair on her wedding day.
LOCKS
FANTASTIC Every Bride-to-Be wants her wedding to be perfect. To avoid a bad hair experience on your big day, here are my top bridal hair tips to ensure that you’re left looking and feeling like the belle of the ball.
Think Ahead
Start thinking about your hair the moment you set the date for your wedding. We all know that planning your wedding takes months, and this goes for hair, too. Go to a reputable hairdresser for a full consultation at least three months before the wedding to advise on whether you need to concentrate on cut, condition or colour in the long term.
Consultation is key
Have an in-depth consultation to discuss your requirements – bring in pictures so your stylist has a visual idea of what you’re looking for. Once you’re happy with the cut, condition and colour then book yourself in for a style consultation, ensuring you bring along any combs, clips, tiaras and flowers that you may be thinking of wearing.
Trial your style
It’s crucial to road-test your style and try some different options, so don’t be tempted to economise and skip the trial run. Leave the finished style in place for a good few hours (don’t take it down whilst still at the salon,) to assess the hold factor and so you can feed back to your stylist ready for the big day.
Final touch-up
Your final colour and cut touch-ups should be made between one week to a few days before your wedding day to avoid re-growth or to avert any colour disasters and ensure you are groomed to perfection. Don’t go for the day before just in case of emergencies. Work at getting your hair into fantastic condition for the big day; try using an intensive treatment regularly like my Richard Ward Couture Hair Intensive Conditioning Masque (£23) in the run-up to your big day.
Keep it simple
Very often Brides make the mistake of deviating too far away from their normal look; for instance, somebody who wears their hair loose and casual going for an intricate updo. I would always advise that you don’t go for anything too removed from your usual look, but a good stylist will take your bridal gown, jewellery and total look into account. Some brides want to let their hair down in the evening so ensure you don’t go for an intricate chignon that doesn’t translate into a softer evening look if you don’t have the luxury of an on-hand stylist. If you don’t, carry some of my Richard Ward Optimiser Style Reviver (£19) to revive your look for the evening party. hen using self tan at home you should use the right product for the right Tantone, if you use a product that is too dark for your skin then your tan will look unnatural. I suggest you test products first to see if they match; do a test on an area of the body that is not on show. Follow this easy guide to picking the right tan. What Tantone are you?
THE CUSTOM TAN Light Tantone (Skintone) Go for a gradual tanner or mix self-tan with your daily moisturiser. Medium Tantone (Skintone) Go for a mousse, liquid, spray or gel-based product. Dark Tantone (Skintone) Go for a lotion tan as these are the darkest and will suit dark skin tones. 46 CONFETI
The golden rules for at home tanning * Wax 48 and shave 24 hours before tanning. * Exfoliate 24 hours before to remove any dead skin and unwanted self-tan, you want your skin to be fresh. * Moisturise your hands, feet, elbows, knees and any dry areas on the body. * Moisturise daily to prolong your self-tan, use a thick moisturiser, such as Sisley body cream. * Exfoliate three days after tanning, so your tan fades evenly. * Rub an ice cube over your face before you apply your self-tan, this will stop your pores from blocking.
Tanning techniques at home: When applying your tan, map out your body in stages so you don’t miss bits. Start from the face and work down your body, leaving your hands and feet until last.
More Tanning Tips * To give your tan a lift, mix a small amount of self-tan in with your moisturiser. * To add some extra colour, brush some bronzer onto a tanning mitt and rub onto your skin. * To stop sweat removing your self-tan, rub bronzing mineral powder under your arm pits, breast and back of your legs. * Use a bronzer to highlight areas on your body. * Red lipstick is a good product to highlight areas on the body. * If you get your body wet and your tan runs, apply a small amount of self-tan onto a mitt and rub over the area to blend in. * Cover toe-nails with some Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour cream to stop them being discoloured by the self-tan.

Harmony IN THE HILLS Written by Nicola McGeorge
Shanti-Som Well Being Retreat combines the tranquillity of the Far East with the natural splendour of Southern Spain

orking in the manic world of media definitely pushes your stress levels to the limit. My partner Andy and I had only just put one magazine to bed and then another double deadline loomed. We really couldn’t afford to take two days off to participate in this review, but sometimes you just need to put your health first. After numerous arguments, copious amounts of caffeine and a bout of the shakes, the break was very much needed. Did Shanti-Som deliver? Let’s just say the two jittery journalists that entered, left two days later rejuvenated and in a state of calm that even the Dalai Lama would have been proud of. The retreat is nestled in the midst of nature, surrounded by the Sierra de las Nieves Nature Park and 48 CONFETI
Biosphere reserve. It’s hard to believe it’s only 10 minutes from the bustling town of Marbella. The sanctuary has been carefully constructed respecting and incorporating local materials, as well as following the guidelines of Feng Shui. Shanti-Som, which stands for peace, balance and harmony, is Kezia Jacobsen’s vision realised. With over 25 years’ experience in health, beauty and holistic therapies, she has created a safe haven full of tranquillity and harmony, where you can take a step back from your fast paced, stressful lives and be inspired, educated and encouraged to take steps forward to “live your best life”. The retreat offers several tailormade programmes aimed at
rejuvenating your well-being including a week of detox or yoga. This has attracted highprofile instructors such as Maya Fiennes, who hosted a Kundalini yoga week in July. There really is something for everyone at Shanti-Som. Do you need to drop a dress size to fit into that sample Vera Wang? Then book in for a bridal boot camp with the Weight Loss Retreat, where you can take advantage of the in-house personal trainers who will arrange anything from daily hikes to outdoor boxing sessions. Do you fancy a girlie bonding experience for your hen do? Then try the Full Day Spa package. For only €225 you can enjoy a fresh juice on arrival, a relax by the pool, take a walk in the forest,
have an oriental steam or sauna, and then a relaxing massage, a delicious healthy lunch, facial treatment, and tea and homemade cookies. Shanti-Som would obviously make the ideal honeymoon destination, but what about a dream wedding venue? You only need to visit it in person to answer that question. With three weddings already under its belt, (remember it only opened in July,) this is destined to become one of the most popular wedding venues in Andalucía. The ceremony itself can take place in the open-air pavilion, surrounded by cascading waterfalls. After the blessing, the wedding party can walk through the picturesque healing gardens and enjoy champagne and canapés
around the pool. The exquisite sit down meal can take place in the restaurant and courtyard. The possibilities are endless. Getting back to our personal experience, after being offered a refreshing welcome drink, we were shown to our room. There are 14 bedrooms, each is individually designed and themed, some even featuring hand-painted wall murals by local artists. I loved the fact that each room had a name, such as “Courage” or “Hope” instead of numbers, and Kezia meditates before deciding where to place you. Guess what ours was called? Peace! After a quick tour it was time for lunch, which was a sumptuous affair. In fact, every meal was an exquisite journey for your taste buds. The Asian fusion Amrita Restaurant at the Shanti-Som offers balanced, healthy meals in a relaxed atmosphere. Head Chef Ben Hayes’ philosophy is cooking with local, fresh, seasonal produce with flavours from around the world. His mantra is “creative cuisine”. The local, seasonal produce dictates his choice of daily specials. I highly recommend starting off with the “Buzzy Papaya” smoothie with bee pollen. Yummy! The Mezze plate with haloumi cheese was incredible, as was the pan roasted chicken breast with tandoori spices, pilaf rice and raita. Andy opted for the sea
bream with Swiss chard, curry saffron sauce, pine nut, sultana and tomato vinaigrette. Now onto dessert – the strawberry cheese cake was so good that I had it two days running. Always first in line for a bit of pampering, I booked us in for a full body massage, which was sublime. However, on the second day, we decided that we wanted to experience something completely different, so we went for the Tibetan bowl therapy. Sound relaxation coach Christine Heckle explained to us that “sound healing” is an effective and proven method that uses vibration sound to help reduce stress, alter consciousness and create a deep sense of peace, well-being and better health. I haven’t felt that relaxed since they put me on morphine after my heart operation. The treatment is also available for groups and couples. Shanti-Som brings together the best of East and West. It is a place where you will regain your energy and gain balance and focus. Kezia explained that most locals who have experienced this haven are already on their second or third visit. Well, you can add me to that list. I am counting the days until I can return. Shanti-Som Llanos de Purla Km22 - A355 Monda - Marbella 29110 Tel: +34 952 86 44 55 shantisom.com

uddha Beach has quickly gained a reputation as a relaxed setting for both residents and visitors, keen to experience Marbella’s first boutique beach club. Located in the quiet residential development of Villa Marina, 10 minutes’ walk from Puerto Banús, Buddha Beach is the creation of Clare Strutton and her partner Ian Radford. Clare is a huge fan of Thailand where she has spent months at a time, and when Ian visited he also became hooked on the relaxed and peaceful style of Thai life. When she returned from her trip, Clare decided to recreate a little of the peace and serenity of Thailand in Marbella.
– Buddha Beach is renowned for its excellent restaurant, which offers a selection of tastes to tempt the palette, and Buddha’s All Day Sunday Buffet has proved hugely popular.
The setting of the beach club is stunning, with a pool area of raised sundecks, two tropical bars, which are perfect for sundowners, a separate beach with waiter service, a fish spa, boutique and VIP area with its own 12-seater rock pool Jacuzzi. As the name suggests, Buddhas and other Far Eastern items are very much in evidence in the Asian-themed décor.
With its own private section of beach, this venue can also offer couples the romantic option of marrying by the Mediterranean.
As well as a popular venue for visiting VIPs – the TOWIE crew made Buddha Beach their base camp on their last trip, and Kerry Katona and Calum Best are regular visitors, as well as Premiership footballers David Bentley (who is one of the owners), Shay Given, Aaron Lennon and Paul Robinson 56 CONFETI 56

For those looking to go down this route, La Vista ticks all the boxes. Originally from the UK, owners Gary and Kirsty Biston have spent much time and love developing La Vista into a unique “home from home” wedding venue. Their friendliness, valuable years of travel and hospitality industry experience and fluency in Spanish, will ensure that you are taken care of to the highest standards. The fact that they were married in Spain themselves means they have a first-hand understanding of what is required to achieve your perfect wedding celebration. The name says it all – with stunning and far reaching views from its many terraces; the options for your wedding celebrations are endless. Gavin from Gibral Flora spoke to Confeti about his thoughts on the success of the Wedding Fayre, “I was very pleased with the success of the event; it has been very exciting and we are very grateful to the Mons Calpe Suite for providing us with this beautiful venue.” The Confeti team was, of course, on hand to offer advice and recommendations, and thank goodness all the copies of the magazine were picked up as we didn’t fancy taking them down again in the cable car. Something Old, Something New. Delight and impress your guests with stylish entertainment.
I
magine having your first dance sung to perfection instead of listening to it on a cd? That is all part of the service from Europe’s leading swing and party wedding singer Paul Martin. Songs by Michael Bublé, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are the most popular wedding songs in the world and “Mr Success” has perfected most of the classics over the years! Songs such as Everything by Bublé, I’ve got you under my skin by Sinatra and That’s Amore by Dino have been firm favourites at weddings for many years, and Paul’s performance of them is impeccable. Paul has spent the past six years cementing his position as one of the top Rat Pack tributes in the UK. However, from January 2012, he will be based in Palma, Mallorca, which is still within easy reach of The Balearics, mainland Spain and the UK. Destination and beach weddings have become more
popular over the years and, always one to keep up with the trends, Paul has designed a new show, which is ideal for these types of events. “Summer Jams” are feel-good, sunshine shows mixed with reggae and chilled out pop, plus salsa and Latino vibes; perfect for a memorable alfresco experience! Paul was born to be an entertainer and takes great pleasure in performing the first dance for couples on their special day. He is often asked to learn songs especially for the occasion and will always do anything it takes to make your wedding day as wonderful as possible. He has sung while the bride and groom walk down the aisle and often performs at champagne receptions, which really suits the cool, easy listening Rat Pack style. Entertainment during the meal is also very popular and helps to create a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere during your wedding breakfast. But the
evening reception is Paul’s main event, as he can even add a stunning four-piece band and a disco to the package if needed. Many people don’t realise how important a good night time show can be. It’s the last thing on your wedding day and the part where you guests want to let their hair down, kick off their shoes and be thoroughly entertained. Paul’s fantastic voice can be adapted to any style. However, he pays tribute to Michael Bublé, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin with incredible accuracy. If you wish to mix the party up a bit he can also add modern pop and party tunes. If you fancy some Latino rhythms, Paul can perform a few Spanish numbers by Enrique Iglesias for a truly international flavour. Picking your favourite songs for your show is also an option, as Paul has about 250 songs in
his repertoire. So if you want to make sure New York, New York, Mack the Knife, and Ain’t That a Kick in the Head are included, you can look at Paul’s extensive list and simply email through your favourites. IT HAD TO BE
You
Cliona Kieran and Fergal McCarthy chose subtle styling and classic design for their Andalucían dream wedding
OUR VISION
We really wanted our guests to come on holiday and enjoy every aspect of our wedding as well as their time in Spain. We felt we had found somewhere special with the Encarnacion Church so we wanted to ensure our venue was also perfect. We looked at about four other hotels, but when we visited De Vincci Estrella Del Mar Elviria we knew we had found somewhere unique to hold our wedding celebration. The setting was amazing and we knew our family and friends would really enjoy themselves. We were also looking for a venue that could accommodate the whole twoday affair.
OUR STYLE
All the way through the preparations and every time I had to make a decision on any elements of our day the two words
76 76 CONFETI
that kept coming to mind were “classic” and “elegant”. I found that the best way to make these decisions was to deal with one task at time and it is amazing how it all fell into place on the day. For the colour scheme we took inspiration from the bougainvillea flower that you see throughout Spain. We used this colour scheme throughout the wedding, from the “Save the Date” cards, to the invites, to the Mass booklets, to the bridesmaids’ dresses. Our wedding dress code was black tie. I have always liked how black tie weddings come out in photos. Having our wedding in Spain I always knew I would love a lace wedding dress. I got my dress in Pronovias, Marbella and it was the third dress I tried on. Fergal wore a beautiful classic, but unique, Paul Smith tuxedo.
THE FINISHING TOUCHES
I really loved our wedding cake, which was done by Divina Tartas in Elviria. It was made up of 70 cupcakes and one whole large tier for Fergal and I to cut. The cupcakes were a mixture of lemon and orange flavours, and the icing and the ribbon was in keeping with the “bougainvillea” colour theme. As our wedding was at the end of June, we were very conscious that it may be quite hot in the church. We made sure that we had plenty of fans for our guests, which turned out to be one of the best things we did as the priest arrived an hour late!
THE HIGHLIGHTS
Our wedding suite in the Vincci Estrella Del Mar was truly amaz-
ing and it really added to the experience of getting ready with my bridesmaids and my mum for the big day. The atmosphere in the suite was a shared feeling of nerves and excitement, but we laughed our way through the morning. Our ceremony was more than we could have asked for and we felt really at ease knowing all our closest family and friends were with us. Although it was the party later in the day that Fergal was most looking forward to, he was especially blown away by the ceremony. The drinks immediately after the ceremony in the historic square was a really enjoyable touch and an opportunity for the wedding party to really get to know each other. On arrival at the hotel for the reception, it was a truly local affair, with a Spanish guitar, hand carved Serrano ham and plenty of other canapés. The

meal was fantastic; a beef fillet steak with an added unique touch by the Vincci kitchen. The speeches were perfect with equal measures of laughter and tears. The party then moved inside to a covered dance floor with a local guy, Ian Preston taking up DJ duties. For our first dance, we chose Falling Slowly by Irish artist Glen Hansard from the soundtrack of the film Once. The wedding night had a rather untraditional ending, with the bride and groom and about 20 wedding guests continuing the party in the bridal suite until the early hours.
YOUR MOST TREASURED MOMENTS
With the priest running an hour late, I had to take refuge in the café across from the church. We had already arranged for the café (La Muralla) to provide refreshments for our guests after the service so they were already expecting us. They very kindly ensured the room was air-conditioned to help keep everything and everyone calm and cool. I was with my mum, dad and bridesmaids who also helped fill in the time with distractions
Drinks outside church: La Muralla, Plaza De La Iglesia
and iPhone videos! By the time I saw Fergal I felt like I was on top of the world and then Fergal turned to me and said, “Are you taking this in?” It was just a really special moment in the day and a time we both will never forget.

Bridal Coach Michele Paradise offers her top tips for ensuring you look your best in your big day photos: * Don’t follow make up trends for
your bridal make up. Stick to a classic look and your photos will be timeless.
* Choose a creamy white dress so that it doesn’t create glare when photographed and it’s kinder to the skin tone.
* In photos rest most of your
weight on one foot or the other. This looks less posey and gives a slight slimming effect.
* Before the photo shake out your hands, gently place them on your hip or bouquet so that they look beautiful, not like a claw!

The Wedding Boutique
The coast´s first luxurious, one-stop destination for the most chic wedding ideas
T
he world of weddings on the Costa del Sol just got even better thanks to the opening of a unique wedding showroom. Fiesta Sol, a unique event planning and catering company, has created a space where couples can find a solution for all their wedding needs under one roof.

couple to begin visualising their own wedding in a concrete and exciting way. “We have invited all of our trusted suppliers to treat the showroom as a platform for showing couples what they have to offer,”
every wedding has a completely different set of requirements and our job is to facilitate the smooth running of each event, and for the couple to enjoy the planning side of things as much as possible.”
Based in central Marbella, the office’s beach front location is second to none and has been designed from scratch to incorporate stunningly designed offices, a full professional kitchen, a large warehouse for tables, chairs, lighting and equipment and a menu tasting area.
As well as menu tastings and meetings with suppliers, clients will also be able to enjoy wedding cake tastings, photography and music presentations on their plasma screen and even hair and make-up trials on-site.The interior design, with its white tones, iMacs and stunning framed images of former weddings on the walls, gives a professional and slick impression.
Fiestasol specialises in weddings in private venues such as fincas, haciendas and villas and its success has allowed the company to make this sizeable investment. Heather Sadtler, director of the company and principle wedding planner outlines her initial vision, “We always wanted to create a space where clients’ needs would be completely catered to without them having to move location. They can come to our offices, look
The company’s renowned catering department is based in the venue’s spotless and full-sized, professional kitchen complete with cool room and enormous walkin fridge. The executive chef is Heather’s husband Alex Spinola, and he provides a guided tour with the pride that such a set-up deserves. “I love the space and freedom this kitchen offers me, we cater for over 50 weddings a year and I need my kitchen to run like a well-oiled machine.”

Walking into the Fiesta Sol offices is like entering a miniwedding. The rooms have been styled by Laura at Reviva Weddings, and the flowers, birdcages, fairy lights and dummy vintage wedding cakes create a palpable sense of anticipation – it’s the perfect set up to allow a
Heather explains. “We don´t like to push clients in any particular direction when it comes to vendors. We prefer to allow them to meet them, see what they have to offer and then make their own decisions based on their tastes and budget. Obviously we will always provide guidance, but
The warehouse space houses everything needed to set up a wedding including Fiestasol’s signature white Chiavari chairs, the only organisation in the south of Spain to be able to offer them. Next year things will continue to grow for Fiestasol, as they have acquired sole rights to the amazing private venue, Hacienda San Jose in La Cala de Mijas. Formerly a boutique hotel, and now hired out as a villa, the Hacienda is one of the most popular places to get married on the coast. So is the sky the limit for Fiestasol? “We just want to keep focusing on the client,” says Heather. “We don´t charge high prices or over-extend ourselves. As long as we keep on receiving the amazing feedback we get from our couples, we know we are heading in the right direction.”

GILES BROWN Confeti’s answer to the UN Matrimonial Peacekeeping Force, with some helpful hints for a peaceful wedding
Y
ou love her and she loves you, but the families just don’t get on. I know that the wedding and reception are supposed to be the joining of two families, and they are expected to be at least cordial to each other, but if they really, really despise each other then you are going to have your work cut out to ensure that your big day goes smoothly. So, unless you want the ceremony to resemble a bad, amateur dramatic version of Romeo and Juliet – Capulets on one side and Montagues on the other biting their thumbs at each other across the aisle, here are a few tips to help keep the peace. Apart from the obvious one – keep your feisty Glaswegian uncle away from the punch and/ or the gun cabinet – here are some pointers to bear in mind from the experts: Expect – and accept – some clashes along the way. Keep in mind that planning a wedding means heightened emotions. Even the happiest, most harmonious families find themselves in heated arguments about colour schemes and seating arrangements. When the actual day arrives, most differences tend to fall by the wayside and everyone just enjoys the party. 82 CONFETI
Be sensitive to your family’s concerns, even if you think they’re unreasonable. Brides-to-be can make it easier for fragmented families by brainstorming specific strategies to ease discomfort, before the wedding. Reassure squabbling parents that you’ll ask for their input. If you’re truly stumped about how to head off a ruck at the reception ask them to come up with their own strategies for keeping the peace. Turn things around by saying, “What are your suggestions for making things work?” You may find that people feel better when they create their own solutions, rather than having solutions imposed on them. You deal with your own family – and let your partner deal with theirs. Confronting your future in-laws with potentially sensitive issues (limiting the number of guests they can invite qualifies!) should be your fiancé’s duty. And you don’t want to add fuel to an already volatile fire. Don’t let yourself be manipulated. Ultimately they have to make their own decisions about how to behave – and then live with them. If one family or family member persists with threats not to attend the wedding, all the bride and groom can really
do is let them know how much they’d love to have them there, then hope that they come to their senses. If you really think that your feuding families are going to ruin the occasion, below are two real life examples of what other couples did who had similar experiences. It’s what I call the “Sod it-let’s go to Vegas option”. Bride and groom A had a late May wedding planned. The bride’s family and the Groom’s family constantly bickered and argued about where the ceremony was going to take place, the reception location, the menu, how many attendants were going to be involved and the wedding attire. In October the engaged couple decided to take matters into their own hands, they were getting very weary of the constant arguing between families. They made arrangements to have “a small wedding” at a bed and breakfast about 200 miles away. The owners of the bed and breakfast were the couple’s “witnesses”. When the couple got back they called each of their parents and told them, “You’ll have to find something new to argue about. We got married this weekend, and we are not going to do it again.”
Bride and groom B. The bride’s mother planned a big, formal wedding for this couple. She picked out the ceremony location, the reception location, the dinner menu and the bridesmaids’ gowns. This was not what the bride and groom wanted – they wanted a casual beach wedding with a few friends so they made arrangements to go away secretly to a resort where they had a beach ceremony at sunset. After the ceremony the bride and groom called their parents to announce their good news. They got the beach ceremony that they wanted. As we say in these parts “Toma!!!!” But no matter how much your family don’t get on, your wedding reception has to be better than the country wedding in Turkey where things got a little heated and slightly out of hand, and the argument escalated to the point where machine guns and grenades were produced. 44 guests died in the ensuing gun battle. I doubt that things will get that drastic at your own wedding, but it may be wise to keep your feisty Glaswegian uncle away from the wedding punch, as I mentioned earlier, just to be on the safe side…

YOUR DAY YOUR WAY
T estimonials Wedding reviews are very important in helping a couple to decide which companies to choose for their big day. Here is a selection of recent testimonials from brides who found their suppliers through Confeti Magazine.
Donna Snowdon married Steve Wilson July 2011
VENUE Tamisa Golf Hotel was a fantastic venue, not only did it look picturesque but everything was done very professionally. They really made it special for us with the extras that they organised. The food was excellent, which was appreciated by all. The team was courteous and helpful, and they took away a lot of the stress that goes with organising the perfect wedding. Fantastic!
CAKE Debbie Sheridan made our wedding cake. We chose the style, and she made it beautifully. It looked so lovely and 88 88 CONFETI
tasted great. I know that Debbie started to make the fruit cake some weeks before our wedding day and was feeding it with brandy right up to the time of icing it. We chose to cut our cake later on during the evening and little boxes were organised so people could take it home if they wished.

PHOTOGRAPHER
Lorraine from Princess Bride was so kind. She visited me at my house and we planned what would happen right up to the wedding day. She has a lovely personality and was very helpful. Lorraine did a grand job on the day and I really felt fantastic.
Bodakids were very professional and punctual, and I just couldn’t believe how many photos they took of everything, from getting ready right up to the dancing. We will have lots of happy memories from these photographs and a beautiful wedding album.
DJ & KARAOKE
STATIONERY
DRESS
DJ Laurie Scott ran our music; what a friendly and funny personality he is! He played all our favourites, and even took requests. He was so good that we booked him again for a second bash at our house.
Elite Invites not only had a multitude of designs and colours to choose from, but they even helped me decide what to write on the invitations. Delivery was quick and lots of people remarked how lovely they were.
Fiona Manley was so good, she came to visit me a couple of times and kindly helped me with my dress to initially try it on and then to help dress me on the day. Bless her, she even took it home to hang it for me so that my partner would not see it and brought it to me on the day, she was so very helpful.

HAIR & MAKEUP
Bodakids were a fab team! They worked really closely with us prior to our wedding day to ensure we got the most out of every available photo and video opportunity. They asked prior to the wedding day for details of any specific photos we wanted taken and they ensured this happened without us having to even think about it. They stayed well after our first dance so we think they captured all the elements of our day. Thank you Bodakids for making our day so special and giving us something concrete to remember it by in the years to come.
Lorraine at Princess Bride was fantastic and so patient throughout the whole planning of my look for the day. From the panicked emails about the paleness of my skin in January to our 2nd trial in May, I felt really confident and relaxed on the day knowing that I could leave it in Lorraine’s hands to turn me into a princess, which is exactly how I felt all day. As promised by Lorraine, my make-up lasted all day and night, even through the tears. I even got a second day out of my eyelashes.
Corrine Cannenpasse-Riffard married Aslam Jilani June 2011
Thanks to your magazine we found amazing wedding companies. They were all very reliable, extremely helpful and flexible, which is essential when you are planning a long distance wedding. They all went the extra mile for us.
PHOTOGRAPHER Anna Gazda and her partner took amazing photos for our wedding. We are big fans of her photos and her journalistic style. The quality and creativity of her photos are superb. Anna is very flexible and friendly, it was a real pleasure meeting her. She was so understanding and always tried to find ways to make things work for us.
HAIR & MAKEUP Lorraine from Princess Bride is amazing and will transform anybody into a great looking bride. She is very friendly and
understanding with plenty of patience to deal with indecisive people like me.
CAKE I still have the taste of the amazing and tasteful Cake Couture Marbella wedding cake in my mouth. The cake might have looked amazing but it tasted even better! Omaya was very professional, she even sent me sketch of the cake so that I could approve the design. All the guests commented on the cake and said how delicious it was. We also ordered another cake for our son’s first birthday; I just wish I’d ordered a bigger one.

Brides-to-be are able to book appointments to discuss their accessory requirements and, more importantly, view and try pieces on from the Olivier Laudus online boutique. Opening a consultation studio was the brainchild of Sangeeta Laudus, co-founder of Olivier Laudus, after a year of meeting with clients on an informal basis at Jordan Burr to show them pieces. Sangeeta says, “Clients welcomed the opportunity to be able to try different designs especially when it comes to hair 94 94 CONFETI
accessories (tiaras, headbands etc). It was great being able to call on the expertise of the stylists in the salon to discuss bridal hair styles and which pieces work with different hair types. We also really enjoyed the opportunity to meet our clients and give them personal attention and advice, which is very key to our business. Setting up a permanent base in the salon was the logical next step. We are really excited with our new venture and future collaborations with Jordan Burr.” Stylish, chic and in keeping with the Olivier Laudus brand’s contemporary feel, the studio is decorated with flock wallpaper with a black and cream theme that provides a lovely backdrop, which has been well received by brides. WEDDING GOWN Miss Phillips is wearing an ivory, silk faille and silk duchess satin gown with a chevron pleated bodice ending in dramatic inverted pleats on a dropped waist, creating a bell-shaped silhouette. The gown has a concealed, structured corset ensuring an exquisite and sleek fit. Silk tulle straps fall into an elegant V at the centre back of the gown. The bust is in silk duchess satin, with simple, bias-cut, raw-edged ribbons of top-stitched silk faille and duchess satin decorating the neckline
and empire seam. The full skirt has concealed pockets, a luxurious band of silk duchess satin at the hem and a subtle train. Delicate fabric-covered buttons decorate the centre back of the gown, falling from the neckline to the hem. The gown has been made using impeccable couture workmanship; its styling is contemporary and ultra-chic.
THE VEIL Miss Phillips’ veil is a fine, silk tulle, cathedral-length, bouffant style with a short blusher.
