I KNEW THAT BEING A FASHION DESIGNER WAS MY CALLING WHEN… I just wanted to create things! I loved sewing, drawing, making costumes, anything where I could get creative.
I SPECIALIZED IN BRIDAL GOWNS BECAUSE… brides started buying my evening dresses in ivory to the floor. It was then I realized how much of a demand there was for stunning, yet simplistic bridal dresses that made women feel incredible. My designs evolved as I moved in to bridal, as the dress was so much more special, I could have much more fun and creative license designing bridal. I design my own laces, beading, and work with the most beautiful fabrics in the world.
MY PERSONAL STYLE IS… honestly, I am happiest in my gym gear, or in my horse riding clothes! When I am at work I am always comfortable. I think that the theme of comfort is something that I have really worked through each of our designs – yes you feel truly sparkling and amazing, but our brides are also some of the comfiest out there! 22 CONFETI

MY BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE
I FIND THE INSPIRATION FOR MY GOWNS FROM…
this is hard! Professionally it would be taking our collections to New York for the first time around six years ago and really forging an international platform for myself. Personally it would be having a family and balancing my love and time for Anna Campbell (my original baby) with my second baby Hendrix.
my brides. They always amaze and inspire me! Our best designs were created for a particular bride.
TRENDS THAT I FEEL WILL BE POPULAR IN 2019… for me; elegance, sexy silhouettes, jaw dropping details and feminine touches will always be on trend. 24 CONFETI
MY AVERAGE WORKING DAY IS… incredibly varied! I am passionate about running a vibrant, ethical, progressive company and employ over 15 ladies, so that takes time! I balance being the Creative Director with being the head designer and researching, developing and designing our collections.

AT THE MOMENT I’M WORKING ON… our 2019 collection. I am very in love with some of the incredible laces and embellishments I am working with!
WHAT BRIDES CAN EXPECT FROM MY GOWNS… to be incredibly unique, feminine, comfortable, and effortlessly glam.

MY DESIGNS STAND OUT FROM OTHER LABELS BECAUSE… our embellishments are second to none. Each bead is sewed by hand! This teamed with our fabrics, and simplistic, sexy silhouettes.
DESTINATION WEDDING DRESSES MUST BE… it really depends on the destination! We are so lucky to work with brides getting married all over this incredible world, from Castles in Europe to beaches in Tahiti! I think regardless of where you say “I do” a wedding dress must speak volumes in terms of who you are as a bride and bring out your individual style. You have to feel a million dollars when you wear it, and want to have the party of your life!

omething old, something new, something borrowed and something blue… Why not bend the rules this season with a non-white gown whilst also incorporating your ‘something blue’ in a unique way. Blue is the new white we say and many designers are in agreement, expanding their collections to appeal to the modern bride with non-traditional wedding gowns. Keep things cool in ice blue, or go soft with a pastel hue.

DETAILED EMBROIDERY Leading brands showcased this trend throughout their collections, including a selection of Phoenix Gowns dresses that have stunning star details and Beside Couture by Gemy designs that feature intricate fabric work.
OVERSIZED EMBELLISHMENT One of the many unmissable trends from London Bridal Fashion Week incorporating White Gallery is oversized embellishment. Designers aren’t shy of covering gowns with bold accents, with the use of feathered skirts, 3D flowers and bows featuring prominently in many collections. Feathered skirts offer a stylish edge while remaining subtle, and this is evident in Pronovias’ Risuena gown. The marvellous mermaid gown radiates elegance, while the feathered skirt creates a feminine look. Ronald Joyce’s gowns also feature the oversized embellishment trend with many of the designs including 3D flowers. Bows can be found in Savin London’s designs and are a statement piece for the fashion-forward, confident bride.

nce upon a time wedding colour schemes meant delicate blush, white and soft neutral tones. Elegant yet safe choices in centerpieces and chair covers, and of course the bridal bouquet comprising of stunning blush roses with white peonies, and lets be honest it’s always a successful combination. But times are changing, and we are loving the bold, brave moves modern brides are making with their design choices. We have found that it’s all about understanding when and where to take chances with your wedding elements. If your dream day is based on a traditional fairytale theme then perhaps plenty of greenery, and white roses is the best way to go however, if something a little different is taking your fancy why not be daring and choose one area of your design to POP. It could be as simple as adding a bold flower to your bouquet that follows through the men’s button holes, and really stands out. Perhaps even a bright table runner or napkin to sit on top of the crisp white tablecloths on your dinner tables.

Maid in Heaven Want the wedding day hairstyle of your dreams? Reflections very own Paul MacFarlane, who specialises in bespoke bridal hairdressing, shares his W-Day wisdom with you.
C
hoosing your bridesmaids’ hairstyles can seem like a daunting task, you need to find something that will complement their coordinating frocks and the overall look and feel of your wedding. Oh, and it also needs to suit each maid AND not clash with your own bridal hairstyle. Now, that’s a tall order. Thankfully our bridal hair expert Paul is on hand to make your job a whole lot easier with his top tips for finding the perfect bridesmaids hairstyle for your wedding day.
Photos by Mireia Cordomi All hair by Paul MacFarlane @Reflections 42 CONFETI
Find a theme
Ask the expert
Choosing a look for the whole party should always start with the bride. Whichever style the bride has chosen for herself should be complimented by the bridesmaids hair. Their hair could even be a scaled down version of the bride’s, but should NEVER overshadow the bride’s hair.
A good hair stylist can help the bride decide on what looks would work best for her maids, so it would make sense to have the whole party be styled by the same stylist or a team who work together. This will make sure that everything works in harmony and flows well.
Doing it for themselves? Honestly, I think it’s a big mistake to let the maids choose for themselves. Everyone has such different ideas of what looks good and inevitably some of these styles are going to clash with each other. This becomes painfully obvious when the bridal party photos are being taken and can ruin the whole look of the final images.
The bride should discuss with her stylist a look that can follow through and compliment hers. Everybody’s hair is different, so all your maids may not be able to have the exact same look, but ideally for the photos it’s tidier if they look the same, just like their dresses.
Photography by Mireia Cordom
mi
The big picture I find it’s best to keep their looks the same from the front. If they all have their hair up or half up, then keep the hair off and away from the face, and taken or pulled back so from the front they look the same. What goes on at the back won’t be seen in the group photos. Style wise for maids, as I have already mentioned, their hair should be a scaled down version of the bride. For example if the brides hair is up, the maids could have a smaller simpler version. If the bride’s hair is worn loose and down, put the maids hair back in a low pony or bun. This will not distract from the bride’s style. Her hair should always stand out from the maids.
Keep calm and carry on They best way to make things run smoothly on your big day, is to make sure that while your stylist is working hard to get the party done and out in time, have the maids arrive in time slots so as not to crowd the stylist or team working. Where possible allocate a separate room where the stylist can work without any distractions. This keeps the stylist calm which in turn and most importantly will keep the bride calm when it’s her turn to have her hair done.
MAIDS’ HAIR SHOULD BE A SCALED DOWN VERSION OF THE BRIDE. Testing times Many times while working on wedding parties I have come across a difficult maid. We all have in this industry. She’ll be late, she’ll want more time and attention spent on her, and this can cause problems. So I would suggest during your hair trials to include the maids, especially if you have one who you know has diva tendencies. Most of the time only the bride has a trial, however if you trial the whole party it will iron out any future problems on the day.
Fashion forward thinking Still stuck for ideas? Here are few of my favourite hair trends for bridesmaids this year: The half-up hairstyle got a cool makeover. Instead of pulling hair into a voluminous half-up section, just the face-framing layers should be pulled back and laid flat with a few bobby pins.
You can also take inspiration from the Chanel runway presentation at Paris Fashion Week where hairstylist Sam McKnight gave the models a loose, half-up French-girl style, secured at the back with an accessory. Sparkly hair slides, ribbons, brooches and camellias adorned the simple, clean healthy hair. Another way to work the half up trend is by pinning the hair back on one side of the head only, and using a killer piece of jewellery to do so. It gives half-up bridal hair an ethereal vibe that doesn’t feel princess-y. Intentionally messy hairstyles are also in. Even though the look is meant to have an undone feel, remember it’s ‘messy’ in
a controlled way. Make sure it doesn’t become a whole mess after a few hours! Center partings were seen all over the Fall 2019 Bridal Fashion Week runways, the style can be kept either super sleek and pulled back or more voluminous for an effortlessly cool look. Ribbons are the must have hair accessory for the bridal party this year. Tying off a slim satin or velvet bow is such a beautiful and simple way to accessorise a wedding hairstyle. I personally love the delicate and modern take on the polished side bun this year contrasting with the highlighted no-make-up-make-up, a total natural-beauty look for the bridal party.

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do. It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had known each other. He then suddenly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I turned around to see what he was pointing at, and as I looked down, a light shone on to the rocks where there was a sign that read, ‘Marry Me?’. I then turned back around to see that Bhavesh had got down on one knee! He told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life and more with me

We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…
The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

davidtoms-weddings.com morning, the blessing ceremony in the afternoon followed by cocktails and the reception party into the night. All were outdoors, the weather was amazing and all this infused with the surroundings and the ‘buzz’ our guests came with made it truly the best wedding, I myself, had ever been to, and I still can’t believe that it was my own. I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

CELEBRITIES SET TO
Tie the Knot
Although 2018 will be hard to beat, 2019 is another big year for celebrity weddings. So who is set to tie the knot this year? And what do we know about the pending nuptials? LADY GABRIELLA WINDSOR
TOM KINGSTON
2019 brings us another royal wedding, with Lady Gabriella Windsor set to marry her fiancé Tom Kingston at St George’s Chapel, Windsor in the spring. Although the ceremony is said to be very different from the two most recent royal weddings at the same venue with this one very much a private ceremony for friends and family. The wedding will reportedly take place on Saturday May 18th, almost one year to date that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot. In another similarity, the couple will also host their afternoon reception at Frogmore House. A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman revealed that the venue has “personal resonance” for the couple as Lady Gabriella spent many Christmases at Windsor, and her grandparents, the late Duke and Duchess of Kent, are buried at Frogmore. Many members of the royal family will no doubt be in attendance including Lady Gabriella’s brother, Lord Frederick Windsor and his wife Sophie Winkleman.
BILLIE FAIERS GREG SHEPHERD Finally tying the knot after their four year engagement and two kids, this reality star duo are marrying in a lavish ceremony in The Maldives that will feature in their TV show The Mummy Diaries. As CONFETI went to print Billie and Greg were in the Maldives ready for the big day. With her sister, Sam as Maid of Honour and many famous faces, including Ferne McCann present at the elaborate hendo, we are sure the wedding will follow suit and be fit for an Essex princess.

He continued, “We’re going to have a summer wedding. I’m looking forward to it, it’s going to be a lot of fun.” The last bachelor of the brother trio, Joe is rumoured to be marrying his Game of Thrones star fiancé, Sophie Turner in France after Sophie’s life coach uploaded a video of a wedding invite that read “Sophie & Joe France 2019.” Joe’s wedding follows shortly after his younger brother Nick married Priyanka Chopra in a lavish Christian and Hindu ceremony in December 2019.

Abigail and Joe’s wedding day showed that there is no such thing as a dream too big or a gown too fabulous. A modern day romance Joe and I met online dating four years ago. He proposed on a beautiful secluded beach in Croatia and I had absolutely no idea it was coming – he did so well.
Celebration in the sun I have family in southern Spain and have had some wonderful family holidays and many special memories were made there, so it was the ideal place for us to get married. We both knew that we wanted a relaxed, holiday feel and loved the idea of a ceremony outdoors. We wanted our wedding to be more than just a day, we wanted it to be a holiday with our nearest and dearest. Seeped in history As soon as we walked into the Finca Monasterio de San Martin, I think we both knew it was ‘the one’. The setting was luxurious but it still had the most beautiful, rustic, laid back feel that perfectly suited the vibe that we wanted. The rooms, gardens and swimming pool were stunning and it was simply perfect. We also loved that we had exclusivity of the venue, that was really important to us. The perfect fit I had absolutely no idea what style of dress I wanted. I realized quite early on that fitted dresses suited me more and as soon as I tried on the Drimea dress by Pronovias I fell in love with the figure hugging silhouette and the romance of the tulle skirt. never thought I wanted a veil but when I tried one on I completely changed my mind. I added an off the shoulder element to the dress and a front slit as I wanted to make the dress unique to my style. I opted for a gorgeous pair of sparkly gold Jimmy Choo sandals. They were a real indulgence but I thought if I can’t wear Jimmy Choo on my wedding day then when can I. In the evening I changed into a simple white dress with a lovely slit and cut-out back by the French designer Rime Arodaky. I love dancing and needed something that I could move in. Plus it is a dress that I will definitely wear again.
We decided on a very pale pink for the bridesmaid dresses. The dresses were from Coast and were super light, perfect for the heat and the multi – way element was perfect for the girls to tie in a way that made them feel most comfortable. Joe wore a lovely pale grey Reiss suit which he loved and is something that he will wear again. It’s a glam slam I always knew that I wanted to have an up-do. I wear my hair up a lot and also wanted to feel comfortable in the heat. Alex created a lovely up-do that had an undone feel to it as I didn’t want to look too structured. It
lasted through all the dancing and even into the next day. Alex was amazing to have around on the day and also did a beautiful job on my three lovely bridesmaid and the two mums. For my makeup I wanted a lovely, glowy look with peach-tones. Quite similar to the look that I go for day-to-day but obviously done to a much higher standard than I can achieve myself. Nicola was an absolute joy and understood my skin needs perfectly. I have had terribly sensitive skin in the past and Nicola understood in a way that I don’t think anyone else could have done. She was wonderful and made me feel super relaxed and confident.
Simply exquisite We kept the décor simple as everything took place outside and the setting itself was so beautiful that it didn’t need much. We had a lovely floral arch for the ceremony and gorgeous green, white and pale pink floral centre pieces for the dinner tables, plus a lovely rustic green foliage for the top table. The umbrella fairly lights for the dinner looked so pretty– I kept looking up at them throughout the night. We booked the Malaga Minister for the ceremony and I cannot

Real Weddings recommend Natasha and her team enough. They enabled us to create a bespoke ceremony that was so personalized and special. We wrote our own vows and even did some marry-oke! It was everything we wanted and more. Voice of an angel Georgie O’Neill sang during our ceremony and cocktail hour. She was accompanied by her guitarist and the music they provided was beautiful. Georgie has the most gorgeous voice and I’m so pleased that we chose her! She was really helpful in suggesting music and I loved the playlist that we came up with for the cocktail hour – I ended up dancing to one of my faveourite songs completely spontaneously as I was so happy and I love dancing – couldn’t help myself! All of it! I really loved the ceremony as it was super relaxed, personal and unlike any other I had seen before. When a man loves a woman
True love comes naturally, so should the setting. Anette and Idriss fused Moroccan and Spanish styling at their glamorous wedding celebration. Truly engaging Idriss and I met at a boutique I was managing at the time in Marbella. I remember when he walked in thinking to myself “look at that smile!”. He asked me if I was free to go out for dinner after I finished work and said “yes” – of course. After 2.5 years of a long distance relationship we flew to Miami where Idriss arranged for us to have dinner at “Gianni’s” at the Versace Mansion. Then he got down one knee in front of the fountain and asked me to marry him Wild and wonderful Our wedding venue Finca la Concepcion is breathtakingly beautiful. You have a multitude of spacious green areas which give you a blank canvas to create the bespoke wedding of your dreams. The surrounding flowers and foliage are traditionally Andalucian and this was important for us as we wanted our guests to enjoy everything in nature that Southern Spain has to offer.

Help is at hand Si! Quiero by Sira Antequera was our wedding planner and from the beginning to the end of the whole wedding they were just amazing. They really understand what type of style and ambiance we wanted for our big day. Sira and her team are all very professional which made the whole process so much easier. Staying true to who you are For my dress I went for a Pronovias, ivory, off the shoulder, mermaid dress with a mid-length train. My veil was embroidered with flowers to match the pattern on the dress. When it came to my wedding shoes, I just wanted a comfy nude sandal with a bit of heel which would allow me to party through the whole night. Idriss wore a midnight blue tuxedo which was made bespoke by Castanier Paris in London. I wanted to stay true to myself with the hair and makeup styling and opted for a rather natural but

polished look. My makeup artist Nicola McGeorge created a light smokey eye which she paired with flawless glowing skin and a nude lip. My hair was softly curled and put into a half-up do. At first blush We didn’t have a specific theme, but our style I would say was romantic - with soft hues, delicate lighting and a touch of Moroccan influence, (Idriss is from Moroccan and wanted to incorporate this into the wedding styling.) We also hired bellydancers to entertain our guests so they could experience the fun Moroccan vibe. This got myself and many of the guests up dancing, creating a wonderful atmosphere. We used white and blush throughout most of our décor. The dining area was set up under a huge, very old tree, which was dressed with fairy lights creating that much wanted fairytale effect. All tables were candle lit and dressed with rose gold candle holders and various sized vases filled with mixture of white and blush floral arrangements. We also used fresh roses to decorate our delicious, three tier, white fondant, ruffled mango mouse cake. It looked spectacular.

Aisle memories Our ceremony began just as the sun started to go down, so we were blessed with beautiful clear skies and dappled light peeking through the palm trees. To say it looked dreamy would be an understatement. Idriss walked down with his mother to “Viva la vida – Coldplay” played on violin and cello, while my entrance with my mother was to “Love me like you do – Ellie Gouding”. Fran Santos
our celebrant made the ceremony fun, engaging and light hearted which is what we were looking for. We walked back up the aisle as husband and wife to “Sky full of stars – Coldplay” and guests showered us with white rose petals. We chose “La Vie en Rose” by Andrea Bocelli ft. Edith Piaf for our first dance and then opened up the dance floor with the band
“Who Killed the DJ.” This really put all our guests in a party mood. The music was varied from Moroccan/ Arabic to Argentinian tango, which was important to represent us. There really was something for everyone. Keeping it natural We chose Eloy Muñoz for our photography as their work is very natural and all about capturing the real emotions of the day. We didn’t
want the photos to seem staged. When we look at all the photos from our wedding day we just go “wow” to each one of them. My wedding day highlights... I had several great moments throughout the day but my favourite had to be when I was walking down the aisle, I looked up at Idriss and all I could see was this big bright smile. CONFETI 65

With such a show-stopping and unique venue, Charlotte and Simon kept their decor simplistic, leaving the amazing views to do the talking.
Truly engaging Simon and I met at the University of Birmingham where we were both doing a Chemistry degree, however it wasn’t until our final year that we actually became a couple. We had been together for four years when Simon proposed in Johannesburg, on the first night of our holiday in South Africa, just before starting our safari. He arranged the whole thing with the hotel, our room was all decorated and champagne and canapÊs laid out for us. It was perfect. No place like home My mum and stepfather have lived in Spain for over ten years now and it feels like home to me. We both wanted an abroad wedding for the party/holiday vibe it brings and having spent many weeks their together throughout our relationship it was the ideal choice. last October, we knew it was the one. My mum and stepfather went to visit the venue and fell in love with it as well so that sealed the deal. We loved the spectacular backdrop for the Chuppah ceremony and the beautiful gardens, where we could entertain our guests all evening. Dyana and her team from Optimum Weddings worked with us to plan our perfect wedding. Dyana had previously planned my mums 50th and is a friend of the family. With her extensive Jewish knowledge, we knew she’d do an excellent job for us. The whole team was very thorough and extremely patient, we can’t recommend them enough.
All that glitters I initially selected a Caroline Castigliano gown in a boutique in central London, however they went into administration in June and weren’t able to fulfill my dress order. With only three months until the wedding I was recommended to go to Louise Marie, for a bespoke gown. Louise is truly a superstar and I was blown away by her work and attitude. She designed me the most perfect lace bodice gown with a raw edge Swarovski veil. A real life fairy god mother. I wore gold glittery Jimmy Choos for the ceremony and reception which I loved, but I changed into wedges for the dancing to ensure I could last all night.
Simon wore a tailored tuxedo by Hugo Boss that fitted him to perfection and a black patterned bow tie by Mrs Bow Tie. His shoes were traditional patent brogues from Russell and Bromley. My beautiful bridesmaids wore the Regent dress in Blossom by Maids to Measure, they looked stunning. Both my makeup artist, Nicola McGeorge, and my hair stylist, Alex Harrocks, understood me perfectly. For my make-up I wanted to feel made up but not overdone. Nicola did a fabulous job and worked around the clock throughout the wedding to make sure I was glowing perfectly at all
Keeping the faith As the backdrop for the Chuppah was so dramatic and the garden of the Finca so green and luscious we didn’t feel the need to go totally over the top with flowers. Berta at Unique totally understood us and executed the flowers to perfection. I adored my bouquet of white and pinks which matched beautifully to the Chuppah design and the table decorations my mum designed with her. The ceremony was incredibly special to us, I converted to Judaism earlier this year and my converting Rabbi travelled to Spain to marry us in the most beautiful ceremony. Roland Brandman our chazzan was excellent and sang every note beautifully, it was incredibly moving. My sweet mission Le Panto catering put on a fantastic spread of canapes & cocktails for the drinks reception.

simply PERFECT
Georgina and Andy do things a little differently concentrating on celebrating their love with their families and friends under the Spanish sun. Social media meet We met when I moved out to Spain for work and asked all my friends to put me in touch with anyone they knew on the Costa del Sol. A school friend knew Andy’s boss and introduced us via Facebook so he could help me settle in. We met the first weekend I was in Spain and have hardly been apart since – that was 11 years ago! A breath of fresh air We’ve lived in Spain a long time and couldn’t imagine holding our wedding anywhere else! D´Blanco impressed us at once for its stunning setting right on the beach, the separate area that we could take over for the wedding and the amazing food. The lady in charge of events Rosa, immediately put us at ease, as she clearly knew exactly what she was doing and had everything 70

organized to make it a relaxed and easy experience for us. As an event organizer myself I found that lacking in many of the venues we visited! Stripped right back We decided against traditional and went for a relaxed beach vibe, so my dress was short and simple, something I could wear day and night and be really comfortable in. It was important to us that the ceremony reflected our style, rather than ticking the boxes other people expect from a wedding, so we paired it right back, no bridesmaids, no bouquet or flowers, my Mum as the celebrant and a very laid back style. Rosa at D’Blanco took care of making the place look amazing, so we didn’t have to worry about anything.
Real Weddings
Quirky little details The food was served cocktail style, so people could mingle and enjoy, rather than be restricted to set seating. There were canapes, cheeses, sushi and a wonderful selection of BBQ meats, followed by yummy mini deserts. We wanted a party atmosphere and a cool vibe through the day, so we used the DJ John Hobbs and his fantastic drummer to add a bit more of the wow factor. He played cool laid back music earlier on in the day and some real floor fillers later – everyone loved it. Our cake was not what you would call traditional – it was an enormous French Fancy! The very talented Sarah from Sunshine
Cakes created it for us and it looked and tasted amazing. We used Lina Bodis a very talented photographer and friend, who was amazing at making us all feel comfortable and made sure we had some wonderful shots of
the day. We were really happy with the pictures and the experience, and would highly recommend her. The perfect fit It was all so much fun, and a very fitting celebration of Andy and I. I loved seeing all my wonderful family and friends all together getting to know each other and hitting the dancefloor at the end of the day. If I could change one thing, I would remember to bring my Grandma’s watch that I was supposed to wear, but stupidly left at home. My advice for future brides… Don’t feel pressured to do the traditional wedding stuff. Just be yourselves and decide what you want and then do it! If you’re watching the budget, tell your suppliers that you are having an event rather than a wedding – it’s amazing how much people add on when they hear the word wedding, when in fact it is just an event after all!

IT TAKES TWO
Personal touches gave Georgia and Joel’s special day plenty of individual style. Frock star I visited many wedding dress shops all over London before I found ‘the dress’. I had NO clue what style I was after but being in the fashion industry, I knew the type of fabrics I preferred. I almost gave up but thankfully made an appointment at Angelica Bridal in Islington and finally found my dream dress. My dress was a Liz Martinez, (a French/Israeli designer,) who definitely focuses on using beautiful fabrics and attention to detail.
Sharing the love We always knew we wanted to get married abroad. We hated the idea that London weddings generally only last for one day, whereas a destination wedding meant that our guests could join us for a long weekend wedding. After our engagement party in June 2017 we jetted off to Mallorca to look for venues, but none of the venues really stood out enough for us. We then discussed the option of Marbella as we had both been holidaying there from a very young age. Joel’s grandparents moved to Marbella over 30 years ago and my grandma also has a place there, where she spends 6 months of the year. The connection for both our families was the deciding factor. We knew we wanted a venue with beautiful views of the ocean. After visiting venue after venue we finally came across La Cabane and were simply overwhelmed by the stunning back drop of the beach and the Mediterranean sea. Having exclusivity was really important for us and the idea of having so many options of areas in the venue to choose from was ideal. We loved the idea of having the ceremony in one area, the dinner in another and the evening party in a totally different space.

Meant to be During our first visit to La Cabane we got chatting to another couple and it turned out that they had also got married there, a year ago to the day. They immediately recommended their wedding planner, Dyana from Optimum weddings. Although we know Marbella quite well, we knew we wouldn’t be able to get out to Spain as often as we would have liked so having a wedding planner was really important for us.
Optimum weddings were amazing from start to finish. I was probably one of the more fussier brides, as I am quite a perfectionist and even the small details mean so much to me, but this didn’t stop them from doing an amazing job. We are so grateful for all their hard work and for putting up with all the 24/7 whatsapps and Facetime calls. Their professionalism on the day was clear for everyone to see. They even stayed until the 3am finish. We made friends for life.
I really wanted the bridesmaid dresses to be in white, so I searched and searched until I finally found one they all loved from ASOS. They happened to look a lot like my wedding dress which Is the thing I loved most about them. Our bridesmaids were a big part of our special day so why not? Time to dazzle I knew I didn’t want my hair all up, but having such long hair I thought it would be sensible to keep it off my face in the heat. My hairstylist, Emma tried a variety of different styles and in the end I went for something quite subtle but with detail at the back. I had gypsophila woven into the plaits, as did the bridesmaids to continue the theme. Emma was just so lovely to be around
on the morning of the wedding. She is the just nicest person and I couldn’t recommend her enough. I wasn’t sure how I wanted my make up, but my makeup artist Nicola McGeorge made the whole process so easy. I told her the things I liked and left it to her. I absolutely loved my make-up. She was the most calming person to be around and she is so knowledgeable and listens to exactly what you want. I opted for quite soft make up, as my dress was quite detailed. I felt didn’t need anything too heavy, especially with the heat, but I still wanted to look made up. The humidity on the day was unbearable but my make-up didn’t move at all. We absolutely loved our make-up and we all had so many compliments. I highly recommend Nicola to anyone looking for wedding make up.
Simply sensational We used Unique by Roberto Silvosa as our florist and wow! They are so much more than just florists. They are so creative and their work is more like a piece of art. All the flowers we chose were unstructured looking without being
too over the top. Our Chuppah was so breathtaking and I loved the addition of real berries in the bouquets. A Twist on tradition Quike Navarro played the violin during the ceremony as we wanted something really emotional for the walk down the aisle and felt that the violin would really set the mood. Joel and his parents walked down to Perfect by Ed Sheeran, while I chose A Thousand Years by Christina Perri for myself and my parents. Recipe for success We put a lot of planning into the food. We wanted to keep the Spanish theme throughout so we chose lots of Tapas style canapés for the reception including patatas alioli, gazpacho, croquettes and tortilla. For the sit down meal we chose a smoked salmon salad to start, then Rotena (local fish) for main, on a bed of dauphinoise potatoes and for dessert we went with chocolate fondant and ice cream. During the dancing later in the evening mini hot dogs and mini pizzas were brought out to keep the guests energy going. Everyone is still raving about the food. Create your own magic I love adding a personal touch and spent months deciding and researching for ways to personalize our special day. For the ceremony I made mini tissue boxes with our names on which said ‘For your happy tears.’ Fans were also handed out to the guests with our logo on. For after dinner, mini packets of polos with our names on were placed CONFETI 73

on all the tables. Other personal touches included white suede kippahs for the men to cover their heads during the ceremony and for the ladies there were flip flops. I personalized them all by adding a hand written tag onto each of them with a little personal message for each guest. Little details like this mean so much to me so I wanted to add in as many as possible! Crowd Pleaser The music was amazing. 2 True Entertainment are a soul and Motown band headed up by Mike and Simone. They were so helpful and let us come and watch them playing at different venues before playing at our wedding. Quike played the violin for the crazy Jewish music and also in between Mike and Simone’s sets. He really did keep the party going all night!.

We clicked straight away, and spent a year doing the long-distance relationship thing, travelling between Limerick & Glasgow every other weekend. An authentic Spanish touch Climate was the number one reason we chose Spain for our wedding. We both said we always wanted a beach wedding, and where we could a make a family holiday out of it. We chose Nerja because even though it was a welcome spot for tourists, it still had the traditional Spanish feel about it. Out to sea Marinas de Nerja was our perfect location being right on the beach and we were highly recommended it by Sunshine Weddings who understood
our brief perfectly. We loved that we were able to have both our ceremony and meal outdoors looking out to the sea. Our first impression of the venue was amazing, it was a really well maintained hotel. Just perfect I wore a Stella York dress and the groom and groomsmen wore Next. Our colour scheme was dusty pinks, to line up with the summer season and blue for the men. My flowers incorporated pinks, green & gypsophila for the bridesmaids and flower girls.
Real Weddings
We wanted to keep some of the Spanish traditions within our ceremony so we opted for a modern religious ceremony which ticked all the boxes. For the meal we went for a BBQ option from Marinas de Nerja, this way all our guests were catered for. We also provided an icecream cart for the guests during the drinks reception, this went down a treat especially with the kids. The Rivermen provided our entertainment for the entire day and I chose to walk down the aisle to Christina Perri’s 1000 years. Our first dance was to one of my favourite songs; Ed Sheeran’s – Perfect.
Keeping it relaxed We chose Talia Giraudo from Thoroughly Gorgeous as our photographer, she was great throughout the whole day! We loved the final results, they were very relaxed, exactly what we wanted! Our favourite wedding moments…. The whole thing! There are too many to choose; it was even more perfect than we expected it was going to be! If I had to choose I would have to say on the morning of the wedding spending this time with my bridal party getting dressed in the room! Plus walking
up the aisle with my bridal party and Padre Peter making the whole ceremony witty with his fantastic sense of humour. He made us so relaxed and put us at ease for the whole thing, he even had all the guests laughing!

Childhood sweethearts We met when we were teenagers at our local nightclub. It was just a bit of fun when we started going out but over the months it developed into something more and into a relationship we saw going somewhere. We’re still going strong 12 years later and can now call ourselves husband and wife. Feels like home We always wanted to get married in the sun as we have done a fair bit of travelling. We both love Spain and decided it was suitable for us and for our friends and family to get to. It was very handy for flights from Ireland as it had at least 10 flights a week so it didn’t put people under pressure and they could choose how many days they wanted to attend. Spain is a beautiful country and having visited our location we picked for our wedding a few times beforehand we just fell in love with it even more. The weather was a big factor for us as we wanted to 78 CONFETI
get married in the sun and also the picturesque scenes sold it for us. Mijas Pueblo is stunning and the views up there were like nothing we had seen before in Spain. The streets are so quaint and very Spanish which we loved. We both loved La Cala de Mijas, where our reception was held, as it’s like a village and on the beach front and very family orientated . The culture is completely different compared to home as it has a very relaxed vibe and everyone just goes with the flow with no added pressure and stress free. We could both easily move to that part of Spain as it’s very family orientated and has the culture that we love and we feel very at home there. The English is very good in that part of Spain and everyone was so friendly that we came across throughout the whole planning process for the wedding.
pictures and couldn’t wait to show my partner Tony to see what he thought. He loved it but he was just happy that I was happy so would have gone with whatever I decided!
Falling in love I visited the venue in March 2017 with my mum and dad (hubbyto-be couldn’t get it off work) and one of the Sunshine Weddings’ team. I’ll admit when we pulled up outside it I was thinking, “oh my god, what’s this?!”… as it was just a grey wall with a big door. But I was open minded. I will never forget the moment the doorbell rang and a lovely woman Anna came and greeted us (the proprietor of the property). I just remember her opening the door and all I could
see was the blue sunny sky and the ocean and waves. I instantly fell in love and I still remember the butterflies I got in my stomach. I hardly remembered to look behind and see if my mum and dad were still following me as I just kept walking barely being able to believe what I was seeing and knowing inside that I had found my dream wedding location! In my head I had a picture of what I wanted for my big day and I knew that I found what I was looking for. I was busy taking
Real Weddings
All the details… My wedding dress is definitely not something that I thought I would have chosen. I thought I would have gone for something in plain silk but always liked the idea of backless as I was going to be in the sun and wanted something cool. I like a very relaxed look but also something a bit different. I had one day out dress shopping and was recommended a bridal boutique where a few other brides I know had found their dream dress. I tried on the first dress and hated it instantly thinking this is going to be a long day. When the bridal consultant brought in the second dress I wasn’t too keen as it was a lace pattern but backless with a lovely beaded strap details, I tried it on and felt so good about myself and couldn’t believe I loved the lace pattern. I remember pulling back the curtain and my mum and godmother both being speechless and loving it. I always have that saying in my head “when you know you know” and I knew I was going to say yes to the dress. My headpiece was very simple with beads and pearls and lovely flowers very in keeping with my Spanish wedding. For my wedding shoes I wanted something I would wear again. I fell in love with a pair of pale blue (my something blue) Dune London sandals with a pearl heel. I hadn’t a clue what colour I wanted for the bridesmaids but started gearing towards pastel colours and I in particular liked lilac, but I struggled to find what I had in mind. I didn’t want long dresses and wanted something different such as two piece sets. I decided on mint green. I picked for two off the girls a lovely skirt and top combo and the chief bridesmaid had a dress with the exact same matching top detail. My flowers were cream roses and lilies. My flowers for the venue I left up to Anna the owner of the restaurant and told her my colour scheme. She used nice simple vases with one flower in each which suited the whole theme of our CONFETI 79
Real Weddings wedding. For the venue we went very simple as I wanted the venue and views to speak for themselves. We had flowers on the tables with fairy lights for night time and a K and T for the top table with a very special remembrance bouquet of flowers and candle for my sister Terri (My only sibling) placed firmly at the top table where she would have been by my side throughout the whole journey alongside a photo of her, a very special request that I wanted from the start of my wedding planning journey. Anna had the venue looking stunning alongside the help of Louise from Sunshine Weddings. I still got that butterfly feeling in my stomach whenever I walked into the venue before the wedding and I still do now, after the wedding, when we have visited.

Tony has also said that his favourite moment of the day was me walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing me. To start we had the most amazing Caesar salad and then for main course we chose tenderloin beef with seasonal vegetables and potatoes with a mushroom sauce. It was beautiful. The presentation was 10 out of 10. For the entrance to the venue we had 5 hot and 5 cold canapes which the guests all seemed to like and fitted in well with the Spanish style and what you would expect from a wedding abroad, which is very different from your traditional Irish wedding. We caught up with Joanne and Natasha the mother daughter duo, and owners of Designer Occasion event planning services, in Marbella old town, to chat with them about their new business venture, and find out more about this dynamic duo. So Joanne and Natasha tell us a little more about yourselves and your background. Natasha: Well my mum and I are from Manchester, UK, born and raised. We come from a fitness background with both of us working in the fitness industry, myself as a personal trainer, and mum as a Pilates instructor, and then we went on to set up and run our own studio in Manchester, specialising in one to one training and small group classes with a difference. We have hosted many events for our fitness clients over the years, and have also been involved in organizing a number of large charity events most recently at the Manchester United football ground raising money and awareness for Cancer Research UK. We have also always had an interest and a flare for organising and designing events, with quite a reputation back home for throwing great parties. Joanne: It seemed a natural step for us to do this full time, and together because we know that we work well, and understand each other, which is really crucial when planning seamless events, and really it came to a head for us here in Spain when we started to plan Natasha’s wedding! What made you decide to do event planning rather than carrying on with your fitness business. Joanne: I had been working in the fitness industry for over 10 years, and really it felt time for a change as much as I loved every second of it. When we moved to Spain two years ago we started looking to plan Natasha’s wedding, and actually looked to find our own wedding planner, as we thought that’s sort of the ‘done’ thing, however starting off the process we really didn’t find what we were looking for, and felt through all the research and idea boards we had put together that we would do it ourselves, and
82 CONFETI
“It’s all about your client never knowing that anything went wrong because it was already dealt with so they can just enjoy their day” really find out if this is something we wanted to do full time. Natasha: I had so many ideas that I wanted to explore, and also take advantage of the beautiful surroundings here in Marbella, rather than be within a hotel, and repeat a similar event to what I have already seen. I also felt that this is something we would really get stuck into, and challenge ourselves in a different way. We have always loved working with people, and making their physical dreams a reality, why not their most treasured events also! So what would you say sets you aside here in Marbella. Joanne: The key quality we have I would say is imagination. Natasha: My mum has a knack of coming up with crazy and inventive ideas, and I kind of have the resources to find them, and make them happen, this is why we work so well.
Natasha: Also what I felt was important is to be able to offer all types of planning for events, so we can be as involved or not, as required. Perhaps the client wants to do most of the organizing themselves, and have us there on the day to ensure a effortless flow, on the other hand we might be asked to be involved from the start of the process with full planning and support on the day, and therefore we have a package to fit everyone, these are all listed on our website, designeroccasion.com, make sure you get in touch with us to book your free consultation. So, where is Designer Occasion based and what areas of Spain do you cover? Joanne: Most of our clients are in Southern Spain but we have recently been asked to plan events in Barcelona, Madrid and the Balearic Islands. In other words we are flexible.
“We have always loved working with people, and making their physical dreams a reality, why not their most treasured events also!”
Joanne: Natasha is constantly on her phone or laptop finding a source for whatever idea I have dreamt up, and is already 10 emails deep before I know it. Natasha: I absolutely live for organization, if you ask any of my friends it’s a standing joke, whatever we are doing tends to be overrun by my planning ha!
So now that we know a little more about you ladies, in your opinion what makes a event run seamlessly? Joanne: I think the most important thing to consider is planning for the things that could
go wrong, what will you do to get around those issues, if a supplier lets you down or a car breaks down etc. it’s all about your client never knowing that anything went wrong because it was already dealt with, so they can just enjoy their day. Natasha: I totally agree with that, and I would add to that point, to communicate constantly, and have a backup plan in place, in fact multiple back up plans! Like most businesses you must see trends emerge each season, what would you say are the event trends of the moment? Joanne: I think that the beach wedding is always going to be popular, barefoot and natural with shabby chic décor, and beautiful ocean views, with a very simplistic wedding dress, and guests in white, but I also see clients moving more into the sophisticated wedding trend. Influence from Hollywood celebrities, lots of magnificent flower arrangements, and large table decorations, with couture wedding gowns. Natasha: Destination events I have seen recently becoming much more popular but with a backdrop like the Costa Del Sol it’s no wonder why you really can make anything possible. Some emerging trends that I have seen are the use of bold colour as a theme, and also rather than flower decorations using other elements….. watch this space to see what we have in store for next issue!
Joanne: Its true, but also we really work well together, and also love to build relationships with our clients, to understand them, and develop trust with them, so that they know we will deliver their hopes and dreams. This all sounds great, now tell us what services do you offer within Designer Occasion. Joanne: Well it’s easier to say the sky is the limit, what can’t we do? We are focusing on everything and anything, from small intimate dinner parties to lavish weddings, and not forgetting baby showers, and puppy parties.
Natasha: We feel in order to be really great event organisers you have to have a degree of flexibility, nobody wants to hear ‘no’ when they are planning their dream event.

How to Stay
Married T
To offer advice on “how to stay married” might appear rather presumptuous. But then, I have dealt with married couples for many years as a clergyman, and have myself been married for fifty two. I have also read a lot!
his perhaps excuses my dipping a toe into what might well be regarded as a rather muddy pond. Whilst marriage is perhaps the most basic and intimate of all social institutions, it is also perhaps the one most prone to shifts in sociological, cultural, and economic forces. Having said that, evidence is growing that there are few things as good for life and limb as staying married. Karl Pillimer, a Cornell University Gerontologist, studied 700 elderly people for his book “30 Lessons for Loving”. He wrote: “Couples who have made it all the way later into life have found it to be a peak experience, a sublime experience to be together. Everybody – 100% - said at one point that the long marriage was the best thing in their
8484 CONFETI CONFETI
lives”. But he went on to add: “But all of them also either said that marriage is hard, or that it’s really, really, hard.” And herein lies the rub. Marriage is an undertaking that locks individuals into a course of action that at times appears dreary and inconvenient, and which requires commitment in order to reap the rich rewards further down the line. “Historical” marriages quite often found stability in custom, duty or the need to procreate. “Society” expected commitment from the parties involved. Divorce was viewed with almost as much opprobrium as murder. “Modern” marriage is now a technology-assisted endeavour which tends to be delayed until the circumstances are, apparently, at their most
favourable. It is felt that the relationship should provide the whole gamut of human wants; intimacy, support, happiness, sexual excitement. Failure in these fields brooks no pardon; it’s quicker and cheaper to unsubscribe. Esther Perel, an American “relationship therapist”, puts it well when she says “Today, choosing to stay when you can leave is the new shame”. Divorce has lost its stigma. We have to face the fact that in nature lifetime monogamy is not a natural state. (Unfortunately, where it is the natural state most of the proponents are birds). It is also faced with a number of challenges. The author of “How to be a husband” puts it well when he says: “Being married is like sharing a basement with a fellow hostage; after five years
there are very few off-putting things you won’t know about each other. After ten years there are none.” But research has shown that for those who can stay the course, a long marriage is worth the slog. Married people have better health and wealth, and they live longer. There is also the question of sex, of course. Kinsey found that women in committed relationships were feeling more sexually satisfied after fifteen years together than they were in the previous fifteen. And a Canadian study has shown that sex plays a bigger rôle than money. The difference in life satisfaction between couples who had sex once a week (said to be the optimum amount for maximising marital happiness – and leave the light on!) and those who had it once a month,
Padre Peter, cleric for wedding ceremonies and regular contributor to CONFETI Magazine
BEING MARRIED IS LIKE SHARING A BASEMENT WITH A FELLOW HOSTAGE; AFTER FIVE YEARS THERE ARE VERY FEW OFF-PUTTING THINGS YOU WON’T KNOW ABOUT EACH OTHER. AFTER TEN YEARS THERE ARE NONE
was bigger than the difference between those who had an annual income of $50,000 to $75,000 and those whose incomes were $15,000 and $25,000. But sex does not occur in a vacuum. Couples should seek to spend simple and quiet times together, like going for a walk or sitting on a park bench. And this is not a time to seek to work out differences. This is “fun-and-friendship” mode, not “problem-and-conflict”. Men need to be more active here. Received wisdom always said that it is the woman who should seek to sustain love, as they are the more emotionally aware. This is nonsense. “What men do in a relationship is, by a large margin, the crucial factor that separates a great relationship from a failed one” says Gottman in “The Man’s guide to Women”. What we don’t know about what keeps people together is, of course, far greater than what we do know. But one thing that we do know, contrary to popular belief, is that “soul mates” are made, not found. It is a mythological idea that the euphoric feelings that we feel in an early relationship will last for ever. Soul mates come with practice. We have to work at marriage. We have to find out what makes our partner feel loved. And we have to learn to apologise and to forgive. It is inevitable that we will have disagreements; they are a perfectly healthy
state of affairs. Life becomes rather mundane and boring without them! But we have to “fight fair”, and avoid what might be termed “contempt”. By this I mean, for example, making derogatory remarks about a partner’s earning power, or fading looks. This could lead to constant interruption, dismissal of the other’s concerns, or withdrawal from conversation. We should seek to build bridges rather than to destroy them. The most successful couples share each other’s interests, or at least take a tolerant and interested view of the partner’s activities. Jimmy Carter, with a 70+ marriage under his belt once said; “We try to find everything we can think of that we really like to do together”. The one piece of advice that is easily given, but which perhaps is the least useful is “Choose well!”. Falling in love across a crowded room can sometimes blind an individual to a poor choice (I was lucky!) There is nothing wrong in making discreet enquiries amongst friends. As Gottman remarks: “There are tens of thousands of people out there that anyone could be happily married to, and each marriage would be different”. It bears repeating: it just takes practice. A rather apposite parallel is to consider marriage as not like buying a car, but as learning to drive. And to be the best driver on the road!

f you are after the perfect Insta pic; then coloured confetti is a trend you need to add to your wedding planning! While you might think a pastel pink or classic white fits better with your wedding theme, take a walk on the wild side and go all out with colour. Remember it will only last a few moments, just enough time to capture the perfect picture! If this trend is a bit out of your comfort zone, why not match your confetti wrapping to your theme and then surprise your guests with that big colour pop when it comes times to throw!
