CONFETI’s summer issue – it is something that simply cannot be missed. Bridal fashion label Maria Senvo is another reason to be excited this spring. Fresh new bridal designers Holly Cuthbert and Ryan Wilkinson have unveiled their fashion line only recently and we preview the first collection. There is something about the combination of masculine and feminine inspiration that make their wedding gowns stand apart from the rest. Read about their advice to brides-to-be on pages 26 to 30.

Marbella – and why not? The climate is balmy, the scenery gorgeous and we have some magnificent venues; one of the most popular is the Gran Meliá Don Pepe. With its lavish suites, public rooms that can easily accommodate the most extravagant wedding, uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean and the town’s famous La Concha mountain the Don Pepe team is justifiably proud of its reputation. Read our review of this wedding venue on pages 79 and 80.

In contrast to the newly established Maria Senvo brand, Amanda Wyatt is an institution in the British bridal industry with over 50 years of bridal heritage. We showcase her three most recent collections - English Rose, Classical Elegance and Oxford on pages 22 to 24.

We know that you especially enjoy reading our Real Weddings reports and this month we feature some magical ceremonies. Maybe one or two will give you some ideas for your own wedding? Be unique with a rustically romantic affair in a historic building or embrace a fairy tale –esque celebration at the spectacular Villa Padierna Palace Hotel.

Over the past decade we have noticed a huge increase in the number of bridal couples who choose to marry in

There are a myriad of small details to organise at any wedding. Apart from the big decisions including which venue

and what dress (of course!) you must not forget to organise a capable photographer to capture all the most precious moments of your big day. So many brides tell us that the one thing they would change if they could get married all over again is to make time pass slower and relish every last minute. This issue we feature Gregory Korvin, whose company Sol Wedding produces wedding films as well as elegant wedding photography so you can relive that all important day as many times as your heart desires. Read all about Greg and the Sol Wedding team on pages 90 and 91. With temperatures already rising here on the Costa del Sol we are looking forward to 2014’s wedding season and all that it entails. orn into a bridal family (Amanda Wyatt’s parents had owned a successful bridal business since the 1960s), Amanda learned the craft from a young age and coincidentally started her own label on Valentine’s Day in 1994. She has a knack for creating head-turning dresses from fabulous flowing and luxury fabrics. Amanda’s loyal following can be attributed to the fact that she has something for every bride, from supremely stylish to elegantly classic. The designer prides herself as a leader in the bridal industry and as an innovator for new trends. She has won the prestigious Bridal Buyer Award for Best Dress, voted for by brides-to-be at The National Wedding Show.

her and Amanda’s heritage shines though each of the stunning gowns. The Classical Elegance collection took cues from Hispanic culture, with full flamenco skirts layered with rich organza, to bodices embellished with beading. Highlighting Amanda’s signature attention to detail, this intricate Italian beadwork applied to the body of the dress makes the bride shine, day and night. The Oxford Collection was inspired by all things British and the wonderful year of 2012, which played host to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Summer Olympics.

Maria Senvo

Young fashion designers Holly Cuthbert and Ryan Wilkinson are launching new bridal label Maria Senvo with a perspective that is fresh and unique. The designs share both a male and female influence, which we think makes the label particularly interesting. With the first collection released this month alongside the launch of their website mariasenvo.com, it is an exciting time for the talented pair. Interview by Amber O’Shaughnessy

26 CONFETI

We became involved in fashion design because, having

previously worked in both bridal and luxury ready to wear, we saw a gap in the market for bridal designs that were stylish and combined both tradition and forward thinking fashion. We both contribute to every element of the brand, which makes us unique since it is rare to have a male influence in bridal.

We decided to specialize in bridal gowns because we wanted

to create designs that united a respect for the old with a flair for the new. The Maria Senvo label is special because we understand the woman inside the dress. Composed and sensual, she wants to be comfortable yet elegant, fashion forward but timeless.Â

The first collection is new, bold and altogether interesting for 2014, but to call us minimalists would be too simple. The seemingly uncomplicated pieces are, on closer inspection, playful experiments in shape and fabric with a focus on the finer points in design so that the inside of the garments are just as beautiful as the outside. Trust us – when stepping into a dress, they feel sensational! Â

CONFETI 27

We would describe our individual style as effortless and minimal, as the brand takes up all of our time so we need pieces that can be thrown together and still look stylish. Holly: I am a big fan of Acne and Celine, although these are limited to luxury treats! The minimal style of both these brands is what attracts me. Ryan: Tom Ford suits have the edge on anything else out there as far as tailoring for men goes.

Our biggest achievement to date has been

taking the leap as young individuals to set up the Maria Senvo brand. We are so proud of the brand and never imagined it would take off in the way that is has and in such a short space of time. Every day is more exciting than the last.

Bridal trends in 2014 will involve a new generation of brides who have their own individual style and want to reflect that individualism on the big day. We’ll see a lot of experimentation in styles this year with shapes, colour and back detail continuing to take centre stage with scoop back details and lace edged scalloping.

Our inspiration is that cool girl whose am to

pm wardrobe is simple, paired down and effortless. What does she wear to get married in? That bride, someone not dissimilar to ourselves in terms of style, is the inspiration for each and every design. The aim was always to master that elusive, pared down aesthetic with just the right amount of glamour. We also take inspiration from artistic culture and modernism. The campaign taster shot at a British sculpture park oozes an essence of what the brand is really about; creating what we hope is a striking new presence in a somewhat traditional industry. 28 CONFETI

Our average day is spent at our studio,

which in every way encompasses the typical design studio from the mood-boards to swatches it’s organised chaos! Ryan is a real night owl and is constantly tapping away until the early hours most days. No two days are the same and we split our time between London and Manchester

for many reasons; both cities have a great culture for design and wonderful support systems for new generation brands such as ourselves. Every day is vibrant and different from the one before.

Our favourite celebrity bride is Kate Moss who epitomised

understated chic on her big day when she married Jamie Hince. She’s a fashion icon and her wedding gown was no exception! Rewind back to the 60s and the wedding of Elvis and Priscilla Presley is just timeless (minus that veil!) Her gown mixed fabrics beautifully and again is simple yet striking – our brand’s style down to a tee.

When choosing a dress from Maria Senvo the bride can expect intricate beaded

bodies, elongated lines and pleats: dresses that, once turned around, reveal scoop detail backs and razor sharp features. The collection is designed with a new generation bride in mind who is looking for something a little different from her gown. Each is hand made, hand beaded and feels amazing when stepped into.

We would love to dress the newly

engaged Olivia Palermo. We love her style and she is a supporter of British designers, having been regularly spotted at fashion week. Her day-to-day wardrobe is enviable!

For a destination wedding we would recommend a dress that is light, travels easily and is made of materials that suit your location. Chiffons look amazing at beach weddings and something like our Rye gown would be perfect with the scoop sheer back and double chiffon skirt.

The Ma

P

Au Natural Make up by Nicola McGeorge Hair by Daniel Boardman @ Reflections Marbella Written by Nicola Mcgeorge

ersonally I like to create a bespoke makeup look for each bride and the same applies to any fashion shoot, I don’t use a ‘one look fits all’ method. Before I started working on any ideas I wanted to see the model, gowns and location. Just one look at Rosie’s striking blue eyes and I knew that my look had to revolve around emphasising them.

For the first part of the shoot I designed a natural bridal look, using a warm neutral palette of nudes and browns, which would make the ice blue hue of her eyes really pop out. The rest of the look was just about creating flawless glowing skin, clever contouring and keeping the lips simple. Natural bridal makeup is all about looking like a more polished version of yourself and being comfortable in your own skin. P

STE STEP BY Step 1

To prep the skin I applied a thick layer of Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, the ultimate pick-me-up for tired, stressed skin. This cult product instantly moisturises, brightens and tightens facial contours so skin looks rested and relaxed. After 20 minutes I removed the mask and massaged in Dermalogica’s skin smoothing cream, a medium-weight moisturiser to balance combination/dry skin, perfect for Rosie’s skin type.

Step 2

Using the MAC 190 foundation brush I layered on Make Up For Ever (MUFE) HD Primer, which creates a protective layer on the skin, allowing the foundation to glide on easily and last longer (very important on your wedding day.) Rosie’s skin is flawless and didn’t need heavy coverage, so using the same foundation brush I applied Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra which gives a light ‘second skin’ finish. After buffing the foundation into the skin with Sigma’s F80 Flat Kabuki brush to get rid of any harsh lines, I concealed any remaining imperfections with MUFE HD concealer before moving on to the brows.

Step 3

I tend to spend a long time on the brows as a great arch can make a huge difference to your overall look. Using an eyebrow mapping method, I marked where the brows should be before filling in gaps with MAC Brow Pencil in ‘Fling’. I then added definition with Urban Decay’s ‘Faint’ shadow.

Step 4

Contouring - I applied Smashbox Suntan Matte Bronzer just under 42 CONFETI

the cheekbones, along the jaw line, down the sides of the nose and across the temples. Next, using a natural sponge from Kryolan, I dabbed Benefit’s Sunbeam highlighter on the places that would naturally catch the light; top of the cheek bones, bridge of the nose, cupid’s bow. This gave the look a warm golden glow. To bring some more colour into Rosie’s complexion I worked MAC Style blusher onto the apples of the cheeks, blending up and out so we were not left with an Aunt Sally effect. This was finished with a dusting of MUFE HD Powder along the T-zone.

Step 5

Now onto the eyes; before starting on the eye shadow, I dabbed Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion all over the lids to keep everything in place. I settled on my trusty old NAKED Basics Palette from Urban Decay. Using my Sigma Large Shader E60 I patted ‘Foxy’ all over the lid to just above the crease. Using the MAC 217 (my must-have brush), I buffed ‘Naked 2’ into the crease and the outer corner of the eye, winging it out slightly. I then created a ‘V’ at the outer corner of the eyes with ‘Faint’, taking it under the lower lash line and about three quarters along the eye. Do not take it all the way across, as it makes the eye look smaller. From my Naked 2 Palette I applied a tiny amount of ‘Bootycall’ in the inner corner of the eye to brighten the area and pull the eyes apart, also highlighting under the brow bone with the same shade.

Step 6

Using a cotton bud I removed any shadow which had dropped onto the under eye area, leaving it ready

2

5 4

3

for concealing. To diminish undereye shadows I worked YSL Touche Eclat onto any dark areas and then used my fingers to pat it in. This was then set with powder.

Step 7

The eyes were lined with Bobbi Brown’s Longwear Gel Eyeliner, bringing it slightly past the end of the outer eye. To open the eye, I lined the waterline with Benefit’s Eye Bright; this pink perk-me-up is perfect for all skin tones. As Rosie had lash extensions I didn’t need to add

any mascara on the top lashes, just a stroke of Ellis Faa Mascara E401 to the bottom ones.

Step 8

Finally the lips; I lined and defined the lips with MAC Lipliner in ‘Sculpture’ and filled the lips in with MAC lipstick in ‘HUE.’ Once Rosie was dressed in her first gown I dusted Chanel’s Poudre Universelle Libre in 77 ‘Moon Light’ over her shoulders and décolleté to make sure she glistened all over.

Hollywood Glam Make up by Nicola McGeorge Hair by Daniel Boardman @ Reflections Marbella Written by Nicola Mcgeorge

eup

k The Ma

For the 50s retro look, the makeup needed to have a slightly heavier feel to it, more old school Hollywood starlet.

STEP BY

STEP

Step 1

The prep work was the same, however this time I opted for Ellis Fass Skin Veil foundation to achieve an even, porcelain skin tone. Any imperfections were covered with Ellis Fass concealer, a formulation that offers high coverage.

Step 2

For the contouring I didn’t want the sun-kissed feel of the previous look, so I just worked Chanel’s Soleil Tan De Chanel into the areas needed and skipped on the blusher. For highlighting I used Nars Copacabana, using my fingers to melt it into the skin. Everything was set with MUFE HD Powder

Step 3

The eyes needed to have a more creamy texture to them so, using Benefit’s Cream Shadow brush, I patted Ellis Fass Creamy Eyes 108, a desert beige, all over the eye to just above the crease. I

then worked 104, a grey-brown, into the crease and outer corner, again taking it along the lower lash-line. To open the eye I added MUFE Snow White in the inner corners and under the brow bone. The ‘50’ flick was key to the look so, using a steady hand and Kimara Ahnert’s slated liner brush, I created a solid line of MAC’s Fluidline in Blacktrack, bringing it up and out from the outer corners for a catlike feel.

Step 4. Red lips can be a little tricky. I recommend exfoliating the lips with a toothbrush and then smothering them in Elizabeth Arden’s 8 Hour Cream. Once it has sunk in, cover lips with any leftover foundation on your brush and then powder. Afterwards I lined the lips with MAC Lipliner in REDD, filling in the whole lip. Then, using my Sigma Lip brush, I covered the lips in Revlon Fire and Ice 720 Lipstick, which is an orangey-red. The lips were blotted with paper, more powder applied then another layer of lipstick, to make sure it didn’t budge all night.

Springtime In Bloom By Janne Valentin Lassen

I took my inspiration for the flowers from the beautiful old school Hollywood décor of Del Mar and the vintage feel of the gown collection. As the shoot was going to be featured in the Spring issue, I selected the colour palette of green and white; fresh, delicate, graceful and absolutely timeless. Spring weddings are an occasion to highlight the feminine side of floral arrangements, as many of these seasonal flowers are known for their fragrance and pastel colours. I incorporated a variety of textures, colours, and scents into my designs, to delight all five senses. What I love most about these particular wedding blooms is that, although the colours are traditional, the intricate use of different flowers and integrated textures allows for a uniquely modern feel! The Ca

Before I even started working on my cake design for the shoot, I asked to see the dresses and the location, so that I could create something that worked in synergy with the whole feel. I like to do this with all my brides, not just for shoots. After working on a few sketches I decided on a four- tier wedding cake, covered in fondant and airbrushed with edible silver paint. This was then covered in handmade sugar white flowers to recreate a “lace” look, which is very on trend at the moment. Depending on your colour scheme it could have also been airbrushed in gold or the cake could have stayed white with different colour flowers added to tie in your chosen theme. This particular design can be made in various sizes, from one to eight tiers. Some tiers can be dummies, so even though there aren´t too many guests to feed, you still get the wow factor of a tall cake. The cake featured in the shoot can feed 80 people. I opted for Neapolitan (made with the same three colours of Neapolitan ice cream), which included raspberry and vanilla cakes, in alternate layers, with a vanilla meringue buttercream filling and fresh raspberries. Other flavours and filling options are: Chocolate with chocolate ganache, Chocolate with vanilla meringued buttercream, Raspberry with vanilla meringued buttercream and fresh raspberries, Vanilla with vanilla meringued buttercream, Vanilla with chocolate ganache, Lemon cake with lemon curd, meringue and vanilla buttercream, Praliné cake, Red Velvet with cream cheese frosting, Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and Traditional fruit cake. Of course you could go all out and have as many different flavours as there are tiers. It’s your day, so it should be your cake! 50 CONFETI

THE

FACTOR

Our resident beauty expert and three brides-to-be share their views on the hottest products to hit the beauty stands.

The Panel Nicola McGeorge, 32, beauty expert, Marbella

Carmen Gonzalez, 27, store manager, Málaga

BENEFIT High Beam Nicola: This satiny pink liquid highlighter accents cheek and brow bones for a radiant glow. Use as a spot highlighter or delicately blend all over your complexion. If my skin is looking particularly dull I mix it in with my foundation for a perfect pick me up. It’s the ‘supermodel in a bottle’! Carmen: This product is now in my daily routine and I couldn’t live without it! This is the first and only highlighter I will ever use. Another nice bonus is you get a lot of use out of it and a little really does go a long way. Definitely worth the money.

MAC COSMETICS Close Contact

HI BROW 24hr Brow Powder Compact Nicola: Everything you need for the perfect arch all in one box. With four different shades available you can find the perfect tone to match your brows. Containing a brow powder, highlighter, duo brush and three flexible stencils to help create a defined brow. The final result looks natural and stays on all day. I seem to get lots of comments on how great my eyebrows look when I have used this product and have converted many of my friends. Anna: I am a brow fanatic and I do love this produ ct. I love a strong, dark brow, and it certainly delivers. It is so easy to use and long lasting; there was no hint of a smudge after a night dancing on the tables with the girls in a sweaty nightclub.

Nicola: In the MAC Magnetic Nude collection, there are four shades of nude Lipsticks. ‘Close Contact’ goes with practically everything with its light-medium peach hue with warm undertones and creamy finish. During wear, the lipstick feels lightweight and lasts about four hours Carmen: This is THE perfect shade for me and is ideal for my wedding day. The Amplified formula is very creamy on the lips, so it is comfortable to wear but at the same time it delivers full coverage, so it is pigmented. Because this is highly pigmented, but still nude, I used Prep + Prime Lip first to smooth out my lips and hide any chapped areas (they tend to show more easily with nudes).

CHANEL Quadrille #537 Lumières Facettes Quadra Eye Shadow Nicola: Create unlimited eye looks with this luminous Spring 2014 collection palette. They are super pigmented and blend like a dream, ideal for bridal makeup. The versatile formula can be applied dry for subtle shading, or dampened for more intense colour Anna: This is a great eyeshadow palette and it’s easy to apply. I am not the best at using eyeshadow, I don’t know how to do a fancy smoky eye, but with this product it is simple. You can’t mess up. It is really fun to play with the different shades; you can make the colours subtle for work or more intense if you are going out at night.

SMASHBOX Brushes Nicola: The Smashbox Double-Ended Smudger Brush #20 is the perfect tool for soft smudging and easily creates a gorgeous smoky eye. I use the brush end of this tool daily. It is small and dense, so it is great for applying concentrated colour in a specific place. I also use it to set my gel liners with shadow, and to smoke out the lash line to avoid harsh lines. The other end is great for the lower lash line and blending liners in with shadow. Jazmine: I reviewed the Smashbox Crease Brush #10. This is the best crease brush ever - only Smashbox brushes for me from now on! I have to say when I first got this brush it appeared huge and fluffy to me. The brush not only applied my eyeshadow with just enough colour placement but blended it at the same time. Even though I have small eyes, this brush fit into my socket and even blended hard edges and lines for a flawless smoky effect. A must-have brush, especially for those who are new to makeup.

We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do. It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had known each other. He then suddenly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I turned around to see what he was pointing at, and as I looked down, a light shone on to the rocks where there was a sign that read, ‘Marry Me?’. We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

All were outdoors, the weather was amazing and all this infused with the surroundings and the ‘buzz’ our guests came with made it truly the best wedding, I myself, had ever been to, and I still can’t believe that it was my own. I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

Viva laVilla

Irina and Fares Kilzie opted for a family orientated wedding day at the Romanesque Villa Padierna Hotel

Family Love My husband and I met back in 2005 at a glamorous black and white party in Moscow; we were instantly attracted to one another and after one year of dating, we had our first child together. We waited to get married for 60 CONFETI

quite a while because it was really important for us to involve our children in the celebrations. Very soon, after giving birth to our third child, we organised the wedding and it was set to be a real family affair.

have bridesmaids so I didn’t need to organise a dress for any of my closest girlfriends. Instead, we told guests to dress to suit the Spanish summer and in bright colours if they wished. I arranged for white silk customised dressing gowns to be made for my closest friends to wear as we were getting ready; my daughter’s dress was chosen to compliment mine and she looked gorgeous.

The proposal was a mutual decision between Fares and I; we decided to get married shortly after the birth of our child in the summer. A Stunning Setting Spain was always going to be the destination for our wedding. Owning a house here, we have shared many good times and so many happy memories are tied up in the area. Spain was our story, so to speak. We chose Villa Padierna as the venue for the wedding celebrations because of its Romanesque grandeur. The views from the hotel were breathtaking and the amphitheatre setting was just stunning. We were so blown away by the beauty of the location that we added very little other wedding decoration, except on the tables. A Little Help from my Friends My wedding dress was bought from the Vera Wang store in Moscow. Funnily enough because of being so busy with the pregnancy, I didn’t try the wedding dress on myself but asked

A Classic Ceremony The ceremony itself was everything I hoped for. As I mentioned, we wanted the celebrations to involve the children in a large way so my eldest son walked me down the aisle as ‘Ave Maria’ was sung accompanied by an orchestra. Despite being just six years old, my son took this duty so seriously and it brought tears to the eyes some friends of mine to do the honours just three weeks before the big day. I knew I could trust them and I was delighted with my dress at the wedding. In Russia, it is not a tradition to

CONFETI 61

of many of our guests. Just before this, my daughter Sonia accompanied her father and my soon-to-be husband down the aisle. Female guests were provided with typically Spanish fans with our names printed on them to stay cool in the hot summer sunshine. A large floral arch of pink peonies was constructed at the head of the ceremony, which was enhanced by the pale pink of Villa Padierna. We also placed large balls of flowers on each table. In terms of other decoration, we had life size figures of both Fares and I, directing people to the ceremony and dining area. Makeover Time The dining area at the hotel was impressive and we placed huge white balloons above the tables, which added some extra sparkle. Guests enjoyed a three-course meal consisting of Mediterranean dishes and our cake was designed to match the colours of the peonies, which decorated the venue. Following the sit-down meal, our guests were entertained by a singer and live band as well as a photo booth with joke props. Guests could don moustaches and silly hats, pose then get a print out of the photograph as a keepsake of the special day. Since children were such a large part of the celebrations, we also organised a children’s entertainer to keep all of our younger guests amused. I had an outfit change before the evening celebrations, I wore a red Valentino dress and my friend who acted as my stylist for the wedding, cut a fringe 62 CONFETI

into my hair. It made for a dramatic transformation to wow my guests as the second stage of the day commenced. That One Special Moment If I had to choose just one special moment from the entire celebration, I would have to mention my children who performed a famous Russian song about their love for their parents. A video clip was played alongside the performance, which they had produced beforehand, featuring them singing the same song and dancing to the tune. Our children told us that they wanted this to be a special

present from them and it was such a delightful moment to share on the big day. The time passed so quickly and before we knew it, the wedding was nearly over. A Spanish

Love Story Villa del Mar set the scene for the effortlessly elegant wedding between Sophie and Mubarak

Going the Distance My husband Mubarak and I first met in London back in 1998 where we were friends at university. Mubarak then left London and we didn’t see each other for eight years. We met up again in 2008 and I moved out to his home city of Dubai. In July 2012 Mubarak and I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and his plan was to propose at the top. Unfortunately, that plan was dropped as I got altitude sickness on the climb and had to come back down. So several months later - and second time lucky - he proposed to me at a resort off the coast of the UAE in September 2012. It took me totally by surprise! Homeland We chose to get married in Spain because I was born in Málaga and grew up in Marbella. Dubai was also an option for the wedding but I felt Marbella would be more special as it is home to me and a place very close to my heart. We chose Marbella Club as the wedding venue because of its beauty and reputation; Villa del Mar also offered complete privacy, which we felt was very important. Blank Canvas I didn’t know what I was looking for with regards to a dress which, with hindsight, probably made choosing one a bit easier. I was lucky enough to stumble across Santos y Eva one day when walking through Marbella and they 64 CONFETI

were absolutely fantastic; I cannot praise them enough. Eva took me in without an appointment and within two hours I had chosen my dress. The bridesmaids’ dresses were also from Santos y Eva, although these were picked by one of my bridesmaids because I was in Dubai at the time. I opted for quite a vibrant colour for the bridesmaids as I wanted to add some life to the overall colour scheme, which was off-white, light pink.

my hair and organised a flamenco show, which everyone loved. The menu also followed this theme; for example I chose a cold almond soup for the starter, a dish typical of Andalucía. Mubarak, my Mother and I had visited the hotel for a menu tasting in December (six months prior to the wedding) whilst I was home for Christmas. The food was really fantastic and we were given a lot of help and advice on which wines and champagnes to offer with each course.

Viva Espana As I had a lot of people from abroad travelling to Spain, many of them visiting for the first time, I chose a Spanish theme. Being in Spain made this very easy! I handed out fans, wore a peineta in

An Intimate Affair I wanted my wedding to be an intimate celebration so asked my father-in-law to conduct the ceremony, as he is someone who obviously knows us both very well. I also asked a friend of mine to DJ

on the evening, which was great. The cake was a simple, white three-tiered number, which L&N Floral Design decorated with flowers. No Fuss Organising the wedding partially from Dubai was quite difficult and although I had my Mother and best friend in Marbella to help me out, there were certain decisions (i.e. flowers), which had to be made by me. Juan and Susana from L&N Floral Design were very helpful and assured me that even with two weeks notice, they would have enough time to prepare all the flowers and they did a fantastic job. With such beautiful flora and the stunning Villa del Mar venue, there wasn’t really any need to add anything else. All Together Now It is difficult to pick just one special moment from such an amazing day. I would say the highlight for me was having everyone together to celebrate. When we did the toast after cutting the cake, a friend of mine shouted out, “Pick up the bride!” which resulted in one of my favourite photos (attached) from the whole day. The venue hire was until 2am so we all went to Olivia Valere afterwards, which was the perfect ending to the night. Capture the Moment If I could do the whole thing again I wouldn’t change anything except maybe I would make a note of all the special people with whom I wanted photos taken. Despite the great service delivered by Nani de Perez who made it her mission to take as many photos as humanly possible (in total I received 2755 photos from an eight-hour contract), there were

some people with whom I didn’t share a photograph. Timing is Key If I were to give advice to bridesto-be looking to get married in Spain I would say that there are some really wonderful wedding services suppliers in Marbella including dress designers, florists, DJs, entertainers etc. I was lucky in that everyone I chose gave me the best service possible. Although this applies the world over, I wasn’t aware that having a wedding dress made takes four to six months in most cases so don’t leave selecting your dress until the last minute! Also, consider the weather/time of year for your day before choosing an outdoor or indoor venue. Our wedding was on June 15th and the weekend before it rained! Make sure you make a mental note to enjoy yourself at your wedding. No matter how ready you think you are it is an overwhelming experience where you will be the centre of attention. Make a point to relax (once the ceremony and photo shoots are out of the way!) and enjoy every minute. It all passes very quickly. Choosing one person who will be by your side the whole time can help with this. Nerves can get the better of you so it is good to have a close friend/relative at hand who you can call on for help (holding your flowers for you, helping you in and out of the car etc.)

A Rustic Romance The magnificent Alhambra Palace was the backdrop for Ahmad and Rawan’s Special Day A Proposal at Sunset Ahmad and I both live in New York, we met at a fundraiser for the Gaza Freedom March on the Upper East Side in November 2009 and started dating a year later. One of our favourite things to do together is to walk through Washington Square Park at sunset and on one such evening Ahmad took me by complete surprise by walking me over to a bench and proposing. Glorious Granada Although we live in New York as do most of our friends, we also had many guests from around the world so Spain was a central location for everyone to convene. Granada made sense for us, and the venue ‘Carmen de Los chapiteles’ even more so. I loved the simplicity of the old building, the gardens and water fountains, and of course the view. We celebrated our 66 CONFETI

union with the Alhambra Palace watching over us, in the shadow of history. We reclaimed the city for one night of love, and I feel very privileged to have been married there. The ceremony in the courtyard of the Palacio Santa Paula was everything I had hoped. The Alhambra is an ideal setting for any wedding but especially for us, being Palestinian, being from New York, being very unsettled in our lives in so many other ways (we have no idea where we will be living in six months), it was a perfect moment of tranquillity in a sea of transience. Fun and Feminine My dress was custom made by Rami Kashou. I didn’t want lace or anything sparkly but was interested in working with the fabric itself to create something unique. The designer is well known for his draping skills and

I wanted something that flowed and felt natural. I think I used the words fun and feminine, and the result was exactly what I had envisaged. The groom wore a Kensington Paul Smith suit, with a Barneys New York vest and Tom Ford shirt. Naturally Inspired The setting was so stunning that very little was needed to compliment it and I certainly didn’t want to overshadow it. So, rather than flowers, we used fresh rosemary and olive tree branches to decorate the venue, as I wanted the wedding to be simple and rustic. We hung string lights inside the house and fairly lights in the garden to contribute to that effect. The colour theme for the wedding decor was pomegranate red and olive

green. The pomegranates represented Granada, and the olives, olive oil and olive branches our Palestinian roots. The cake was also tree inspired - a simple, white threetiered cake decorated with mini pomegranates. All the guests took home mini bottles of olive oil and jars of thyme. The Awe-Inspiring Alhambra Once most of the guests had left, Ahmad and I stepped outside and the Alhambra was so shockingly close and looked enormous. I can’t stress how much we both love the architecture and gardens of the Alhambra and it was almost like we had forgotten where we were. But at that moment, moving aside from our friends for a second into the cold, we just took in the view and tried to absorb the day before heading

back to the hotel to change and go back out. It was a silent, special moment. If I could Turn Back Time So many little details didn’t turn out how I had imagined or how I had planned but then, you have to look past that and appreciate the magic of the day for what it was - not easy when you’re a neurotic editor! I tried to stay relaxed before the wedding and not get too hung up on silly small details. If I could do it all again I would slow time down and try to have the wedding celebrations continue till even later- we left the venue around 10, but I would have happily stayed there till past midnight.

Clued-Up Ceremonies are complicated, so get a head start and find an officiant the minute you decide to get married in Spain - there are all sorts of laws for foreigners marrying in Spain and having their marriage recognised abroad. Couples marrying in a Protestant, Islamic or Jewish ceremony will need first to obtain authorisation from the Civil Authorities from their home countries, which isn’t always straightforward. Also, as with getting married anywhere - just stay relaxed, don’t be too controlling and have fun.

A Dream Come True Gemma and Joe flourished in a fuschiatinted wedding Our Story Joe and I met through mutual friends but we didn’t begin a relationship until some months later whilst I was working in Spain for the summer. As soon as I arrived back in the UK Joe took me on our first proper date – a football match at Old Trafford! Joe proposed on a cold February evening at the seafront clock, which is a well-known landmark in my hometown of Weymouth, Dorset. The Spirit of Spain Spain has been our number one holiday destination since I was a child when I would stay at my parent’s apartment 20 minutes from Marbella. Joe and I have also formed some great memories there with our two young children. It has always felt like a second home, so we couldn’t think of anywhere more appropriate to gather our close family and friends for a small wedding. The almost guaranteed sunshine was also a big deciding factor! As soon as we saw El Cano we knew it was the place to host our wedding celebrations. The Miami-style villa was an excellent platform to begin planning a modern and stylish wedding with a real personal feel. It was a luxurious villa where our families could spend the week with us. This was important to us as, shortly after the wedding, Joe and I were set to emigrate to Australia. We chose the beautiful Spanish town of La Virginia for our blessing in the picturesque chapel. This is something we wanted to keep separate from our reception and, with a Spanish guitarist 68 CONFETI

and the blooming bougainvillea, our guests experienced a true taste of Spain! Dress Dramas! My dress has a whole story of its own! I changed my mind about the dress I had chosen in Spain just three weeks before the wedding, when a very special colleague offered to make my dream dress. That was the beginning of a very stressful three weeks but the outcome was truly spectacular. We went shopping in London for some exquisite Chantilly lace, silk fabric, detail for the straps and additional

beading. The dress was finally completed and tailored to my exact specifications the night before my flight left for Spain, with the much-needed additional help of another fantastic colleague! The inspiration behind the dress was to create something that made me feel sexy whilst still oozing effortless elegance. In keeping with current bridal trends, I kept to nude beige for my bridesmaids who held bouquets of pale cream flowers. Fabulous Fuschia I opted for a vibrant fuschia for the

flowers back at the villa because I wanted the colours to be as striking as the fuschia bougainvillea you see all over Spain. Flowers were draped over the banister of the grand staircase and floated in the centre of the pool. We also had gorgeous gypsophila spheres on hooks, which directed guests down a pathway to the tables. A few candles and some fairy lights transformed the villa into a magical paradise at night. Party Hard Fiestasol supplied the delicious food; our guests could chose

from fillet steak or seafood skewers. The cake was designed around the original wedding dress that I didn’t wear but it was still very beautiful and Spanish, with a ruffled bottom layer to reflect a flamenco skirt. Our guests were entertained from beginning to end. Music was supplied by DJ Ian Preston; we actually changed our wedding date so we could hire this man as we had heard he is the best around! He didn’t let us down. We made a real weekend of the wedding, hosting a pool party the next day where our family and friends returned to continue the celebrations. Owen Farrell was there to capture all the best moments of the day. He was a huge asset, from his professionalism to his role as a semi-bridesmaid when he calmed me down and supplied me with drinks when the car broke down! Owen was also fantastic with my children, his great sense of humour made the whole day a lot of fun. He was another reason we changed our wedding date from the Saturday to the Sunday and I’m so happy we made sure he could be a part of our day. Golden Moments I couldn’t possibly choose just one favourite moment, but high-

lights include Sienna, our little girl, looking so beautiful walking down the aisle with her cousin, Finley, holding a flower basket and a sign that read “Daddy, here comes Mummy.” Also, arriving back at the stunning villa to be met with all our family and friends was pretty special, as was seeing the venue set up for the first time after a year of planning. I will also never forget the morning of the wedding when my bridesmaids ran down to the local hotel in their pyjamas and rollers, frantically trying to find a car to take me to the wedding after mine broke down only hours before the ceremony!

But, most importantly, that indescribable feeling Joe and I experienced (and that look in his eyes) when we were pronounced husband and wife will stay with us forever. Words of Advice I’d say it is paramount to hire a reliable car after what happened to me on the big day. Also book wedding suppliers early to avoid disappointment and I would recommend October time as an ideal month to get married weather-wise, because it is still warm but not too hot.

Made for each other Christina and Andy enjoyed a laid back affair for their beachfront wedding

A Chance Encounter Andy and I met 13 years ago in Newcastle upon Tyne when he joined my class at the gym, where I worked as a fitness instructor. Later I decided to organise a charity dance show to raise money for cancer research. Andy was one of five male dancers (none of whom could dance!) due to perform a routine to the famous soundtrack from the hit movie The Full Monty. We shared an instant connection and from then on started dating. In December 2011 he proposed to me in the kitchen with a heart shaped diamond ring while I was cooking Christmas Dinner. I cried so much with happiness that I very nearly burnt the turkey that afternoon!

As I walked down the aisle to meet my husband, all of our 100 plus guests stood up to dance and sing with me. Our vows were kept short and sweet, as we didn’t want our guests to get too hot in the sun. For this reason we provided everybody with a fan to keep the September heat at bay.

Loving Memories By 2011, we had already purchased a run-down villa in Elviria, near Marbella. While we were renovating the property we fell in love with the area: the views, the weather, the people and the Span70 CONFETI

My wedding planner from Marbella Wedding Angels managed everything so perfectly that all of our guests were amazed by the smooth organisation of the day. Love

Alex and Camilla brought their family and friends together for a simple yet beautiful celebration of their love Lost for Words I had heard a lot about Alex before I met him; even my best friend told me I should meet him, saying he was a really “good catch.” I knew he was a mechanic and had a garage, so I went to see him when my car needed fixing. Then it all happened very fast - around 10 days later we had our first date and after that not a day passed when we didn’t see each other. Alex proposed to me at a New Year’s Eve party at a friend’s house. He was extremely nervous and so had drunk a little too much. The only words he could utter were “Do you want to…?” A Family Affair We had originally wanted an intimate wedding in Jamaica with just the two of us, but after a few family members expressed their disappointment at not being part of the celebrations, we decided to get married in Spain instead. This was followed by a three-week honeymoon in Dubai, India and the Maldives. We had our minds set on an American-style wedding in the big garden of a traditional hacienda. It was not that easy to find but, after searching for a while, we found our dream venue in Sotogrande - a ninebedroom villa with beautiful gardens. It was perfect because our family members were able to stay in the villa with us for a couple of days. A Love for Lilies I wanted a simple rather than dramatic dress, which is why I opted for a long, elegant, 72 CONFETI

strapless design. My three bridesmaids wore light grey matching dresses. The groom’s outfit, bought from Santos y Eva in Marbella, was also light grey. We sourced our flowers from an English florist called Julie Pakwood. We have always loved lilies so these formed the largest part of the bridal bouquets, which consisted of shades of white and pink. The florist also constructed a floral arch for the ceremony from approximately fifty long white lilies. We chose quite unusual music for the ceremony because Alex and I wanted to make this special part of the day unique to us. Alex walked in to a German punk song called ‘Here Comes Alex’ and I entered to ‘I’m Too Sexy’ by Right said Fred. Once the ceremony was over some white doves were released into the sky as the sound of U2’s euphoric hit ‘Beautiful Day’ played out into the sunshine. For the food following the ceremony, we used caterers Mark and Noelle from Elviria who were absolutely amazing and delivered a typically Spanish buffet for our guests, featuring a huge pan of paella. Our wedding cake was made by Sotofiesta and was a very simple three-tier design. Once the plates were cleared, guests danced the night away to hits from the 90s until a huge bus we had organised came to collect everyone at the end of the evening. The smooth running of the entire day was as a result of the fantastic work of Marbella Wedding Angels; without their help I would have been lost.

Favourite Moments Our friends and family added so many special touches to the day; one of my best friends delivered a heartfelt speech, as did my mum, whose words brought tears to everyone’s eyes. Another group of friends prepared a thoughtful presentation containing countless photographs to tell the story of how Alex and I met. And I can’t forget my best girlfriends who performed a gangster rap on the evening we couldn’t stop laughing. Choose Spain I would encourage any future brides to marry in Spain, just as Alex and I did. It truly is a fantastic country for a wedding. Between June and November you are guaranteed glorious sunshine and there are so many stunning venues on offer for the most romantic of wedding celebrations including fincas, hotels with picturesque gardens and beachside locations.

Georgina and Chris celebrated their wedding day with a romantic explosion of pink, ivory, lace and pearls. Love at First Sight Chris and I have been together for eight years; we first met in a local bar and it was love at first sight! I spotted him from across the room and thought he was gorgeous - we couldn’t keep our eyes off each other all night. He eventually plucked up the courage to say hello to me and that was it! We met up the following week and I knew he was the one. Within a year we were living together and we have been head over heels ever since. Popping the Question Chris and I were on holiday in Spain when he proposed. We’d spent the evening in the mountain village of Mijas, enjoying drinks and the incredible views. We then went to Valparaiso, one of our favourite restaurants in Marbella. Chris was unusually quiet but I just assumed that the heat had got to him that day - I was completely clueless. After we’d eaten he nervously blurted out the all-important question, I couldn’t believe it! I asked him whether he was serious and when he said he was (and showed me the incredible engagement ring in confirmation)

privacy that came with hiring a villa as well as the impressive setting, but also the relaxed atmosphere we could create for our guests. The bonus of being able to return the day after the wedding for a pool party also helped to seal the deal.

I insisted that he “do it again properly” and made him get down on one knee. Of course, I then said, “Yes” to the applause of the whole restaurant. Chris had arranged for champagne and a beautiful bouquet of roses to be brought to the table and everyone was cheering and congratulating us. I was so overwhelmed I couldn’t stop crying. We spent the rest of the evening dancing to the live band and then headed home for a Cup of tea and enjoyed calling all our friends and family to tell them our exciting news. It was perfect.

A Magical Hacienda My sister has a holiday home in Marbella so we’ve spent several fantastic holidays in the area as a family and had a brilliant time. We’d discussed how amazing it would be to have the same holiday atmosphere at our wedding and, when Chris proposed in Spain, it just felt right to come back for the wedding. We viewed lots of different venues in Marbella but as soon as we arrived at Hacienda San José it just instinctively felt right. We liked the

Something Old, Something New… I spent a lot of time looking through wedding magazines and cutting out images to help me gain a clear idea of what I was looking for before hitting the shops. I knew I wanted something fitted, made of lace and classically elegant. I found my dress at the second shop I went to. It was a Suzanne Neville gown and was exactly as I had imagined. My Mum, sisters and I all agreed instantly that it was the one and when the assistant added the long, lace trimmed veil there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. I

wore very high, sparkly Jimmy Choo slingbacks to add a touch of glamour and had some lovely flat sandals from Aldo to change into once the dancing started. To complete the look, my Dad had an old diamond ring made into a pendant necklace for me to wear (my something old, something new) and a local jewellery shop was extremely generous, lending me the most amazing aquamarine and diamond earrings (my borrowed and blue). I wanted my bridesmaids to be comfortable and look young and vibrant. I’m a very girly girl so pink was the obvious colour. I found the dresses on a website called ‘girls of elegance’ and they all looked amazing in them. I bought their ivory shoes and matching clutch bags from Phase Eight. As a thank you gift I bought them all pearl Thomas Sabo bracelets and charms.

CONFETI 75

Pretty in Pink I chose a colour theme of pink and ivory. I wanted everything to look very fresh, yet also vintage. I had a bouquet made up of roses and peonies, all in soft pinks and ivories. The stems were wrapped in ivory ribbons and embellished with pearls. My bridesmaids carried simple ivory and white rose bouquets, which looked beautiful against the bright pink of their dresses. We opted for pink rose and ribbon pew ends in the church and at the reception we had lots of jam jars and individual vases all wrapped with lace and filled with roses to create a rustic, vintage feel. I arrived at the church in the most incredible vintage pink convertible Cadillac. Everyone was beeping, waving and cheering on the journey and I felt like a film star when pulling up outside the church. In terms of décor, the Hacienda was so amazing that we didn’t really have to do too much. We had hay bales covered with blankets on the front lawn and large sun umbrellas to allow our guests to sit down in the shade during the cocktail reception. We had a vintage glass cocktail bar serving mojitos, sangria, traditional

lemonade and wheelbarrows filled with ice cold beers for the guys. Our favours were trilby style sun hats for the boys and lace fans for the girls and we placed these in large wicker baskets so people could help themselves. We used a vintage birdcage to display our table plan. All our stationery was on natural brown luggage labels and everything was coordinated

with lace and pink ribbons. We also had a wooden door laid across two huge rustic barrels for the wedding cake table and we hung a chandelier in the middle of the courtyard and covered the outside dance area with a gorgeous canopy of fairy lights. Beautiful! A Nod to Tradition Chris was able to meet all our

guests in the beautiful square outside the church before the ceremony, where they enjoyed some drinks in the sunshine and shared their last words of wisdom with Chris. We had a traditional Catholic ceremony, which was carried out by an English-speaking priest. We really liked incorporating some of the Spanish wedding traditions, such as the sharing of the ‘Arras’ and the lighting of individual candles by our Mums, which were then combined by Chris and I to light our wedding candles. We ensured lots of our friends and family were involved in the ceremony, which made it even more special. The Sweetest Thing Alex from Fiesta Sol supplied beautiful canapés during the cocktail reception and then later a three-course sit down meal. We were able to offer some amazing options like fillet of beef because their value for money was excellent. Later on in the evening we served an incredible cheese board and the wedding cake, which had three-tiers consisting of different flavours: amaretto and vanilla, lemon drizzle and raspberry ripple. The cake was made by the very talented Fiona from ‘sweetthingsbyFi’ after we met several times to discuss the design; taking inspiration from my wedding dress, she placed buttons running all the way down the front of the cake, lace icing on the top two tiers and ruffles on the bottom. Alex also came back the following day and prepared us the most incredible hog roast and buffet at the pool party. It was absolutely delicious.

Get the Party Started In the church, music was provided by a harpist and soprano, then at the cocktail reception we had a Spanish guitarist and a band after dinner to get the party started. In the evening we had some friends who offered to do some DJ sets - the party went on till 4am and probably would have continued if the bride and groom hadn’t insisted that it was time for bed! We also hired a photo booth, which contained a box of fancy dress props for our guests to use in the snaps. We combined this with our wedding guest book so one copy of the photo was stuck in with a message and the other people could keep as a memento. We roped some of our friends and family into a stint of filming on the day - we hired the cameras from ‘Shoot It Yourselves’ and then once we returned home we sent off all the footage and they edited it for us to the music of our choice. The DVD is so funny and really captures the day properly as everyone is relaxed in front of the camera. We’ve watched it over and over again. There were so many perfect moments but my absolute favourite was obviously becoming husband and wife. I loved all the beauty prep with my bridesmaids in the morning; they did everything possible to make it special for me. I think Dad seeing me in my

dress for the first time was the most emotional part of the day. My three-year-old nephew sang an impromptu version of ‘You Are My Sunshine’ to us during the speeches and stole the show. Finally, Chris and I went up to the tower of the Hacienda and were able to look down on all the people we love most in the world, enjoying themselves; we just kept thinking “Wow! This is our wedding day.” It was so much more perfect than we could have ever imagined.

Relish the Moment Use a wedding planner to help you with your wedding day. Heather and her team at FiestaSol were absolutely amazing. They helped me every step of the way, no matter how big or small the issue or request and all the suppliers they put us in contact with were also fantastic. Having them there on the day, ensuring everything was running smoothly really put my mind at ease. We were able to relax and enjoy the celebrations knowing our day was

in their experienced and capable hands. Also invest in the best photographer and video you can after the big day you cherish those memories and they are worth every penny. Finally - drag out the celebrations. Rather than just a wedding day we planned a whole week of events leading up to the big day as well as the pool party afterwards where Chris and I could finally fully relax. It was the best week of our lives.

haucer’s “Squire” in “The Canterbury Tales” must have cut a rather dashing figure; a sort of meadow on horseback: “Embrouded was he, as it were a meede, Al ful of fresshe floures, whyte and reede” These were probably roses, very fashionable in the Middle Ages, and would have represented passionate love and purity. He would not have been alone in sending such a message. Flowers have always conveyed their own

Photo by Nani & Antonio de Perez very special message. In Turkish harems such messages could be very important. Many concubines, for all their other attributes, were often illiterate, and the sending of flowers was one way of conveying their feelings. If, for example, a tulip (originally a Turkish flower) was sent to a courtier, he knew that he was in with a chance… if he was prepared to risk his neck! In 1718 the wife of the Ambassador to Constantinople, Lady Mary Wortley Montague (1689-1762) picked up on the idea and wrote all about it in her famous letters home. She was not alone in her interest. Charles II of Sweden spent five years in exile in Turkey, and on his return to Europe in 1714 introduced the idea to his court. The idea spread, until in 1809 a book entitled “Dictionnaire du language des fleurs” (“The Language of

Flowers”) by Joseph HammerPugstall was printed, which became a favourite with Queen Victoria. What the queen liked, the empire liked, and so the idea spread around the world. Books on the subject began to blossom like their subject. Armed with such material, Victorian ladies were enabled discreetly to convey their feelings in a manner which otherwise the strict propriety of the times would not allow.Victoria herself was said to speak “in Language of Flowers phrases

rosemary, expatiates on pansies, fennel, columbine, rue, daisies and violets in addition. In 1852 John Everett Millais, one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, dunked Elizabeth Siddal in his bath and painted her as Ophelia drowning amidst such flowers. He added red poppies, which signify sleep and death. Elizabeth developed a severe chill which nearly killed her. The picture is now worth some £30 million. Victoria’s fascination with the language of flowers resulted in

At the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, whilst conforming to the royal tradition of an all white arrangement, carried Lily-of-theValley (happiness returns), Sweet William (her husband’s name and “gallantry”), Hyacinth (constancy of love), Ivy (fidelity and wedded love), and Myrtle (marriage and love). The sprig of myrtle came from a plant taken from a cutting from Queen Victoria’s own nosegay, given to her by Prince Albert’s grandmother. Such meanings tend to vary from country to country, but often, any specific significance tends to stem from the appearance of the plant itself. A mimosa plant closes its leaves at night, and so represents chastity (perhaps not the best component of a bridal bouquet). Black tulips and roses naturally associate themselves with black magic. A deep red rose on a thorny stem represents the wounds of Christ, whilst the story of the Passion is represented by the Passion Flower.

solarpix.com when describing the affairs of her daughter’s heart”. However, as more flower “dictionaries” were published it became imperative that both the giver and the receiver operated from the same book, otherwise grave misunderstandings could occur! But as we have seen, such usage was not new, and was rooted in history. The Greeks and Romans used Juniper for protection, and burnt its berries during funerals to counteract malign influences, whilst to this day in many parts of the Continent Juniper is used to ward off evil. (It is, of course, for this reason that the author of this piece drinks a spirit derived from the plant). Shakespeare mentions “rosemary for remembrance” in Hamlet, and uses similar references more than a hundred times in his plays. Indeed, Ophelia, not content with

the renaissance of the “Nosegay” amongst popular society. The “Nosegay” dates back to the Middle Ages and derives from the word “nose” (meaning “nose”) and “gay” (meaning “ornament” – how usage changes over the ages!). It was a small posy of flowers which was held to the nose to blot out the foul smells prevalent in an unwashed society. To this day English judges carry such an ornament on special occasions, harking back to the days when the prisoners in the dock tended to stink to high heaven. Under Victoria such posies acquired the name of “tussie-mussies”, and were very popular amongst young ladies. The flowers with which they were composed all held a message. In weddings they became known as “bridal bouquets”, and the groom would select a flower from the bouquet to wear in his button hole as a declaration of his love.

When it comes to the compilation of bridal bouquets it is always a good idea to use flowers that are in season. For example, a spring bride might carry a bouquet which features tulips. They come in a variety of colours and shapes, and carry with them a long historical heritage. When a Turkish lover in the Middle Ages sent his enamorada a bunch of red tulips, he conveyed that his face was on fire with love, whilst his heart was reduced to coal, burnt with desire. (Strong stuff, eh?!) Daffodils are a springtime favourite, and yellow is the colour of devotion. Lilacs will scent the air (an important function of the tussie-mussie) and their purple colour signifies loyalty. Orchids come in a variety of colours, and their bridal significance tends to derive from their shape which represents femininity. Hyacinths, as in Kate Middleton’s bouquet, represent constancy. A bouquet composed of all these flowers will not only hold the freshest in-season flowers available, but will also come at a cost far lower than one composed of forced or hothouse varieties. The money saved might well be put to good use providing extra delights on an exotic and romantic honeymoon! CONFETI 85

O

Jacqueline Roberts of TELA bella in Estepona takes a look at what’s hot in décor for 2014 weddings.

ver the past decade, wedding décor has become almost as important as the dress and the guest list. Brides (and sometimes grooms) increasingly want to create a special and unique ambience - so what’s trending for 2014? The first thing to decide upon is the theme for your wedding and the popular Romantic theme is set to continue throughout 2014. Think candlelit castle, romantic Victorian hotel or stunning rose garden for venues with whitegloved waiters gliding between

Trending Designs

swathes of velvet and taffeta. The Vintage theme pairs superbly well with the Romantic and it’s a definite trend going into 2014. Antiques and perhaps the odd family heirloom scattered throughout your venue, burlap and lace details and muted tones. The Green wedding is also going to continue to be a big hit during 2014 with many couples wanting a more ethical and eco-friendly approach to their nuptials. Alfresco venues are de rigueur - on the Costa del Sol the beach is the obvious choice - but a woodland retreat or botanical venue would

(the world’s leading authority on colour) releases fashion colour reports each season, which, although derived from fashion and interior design, also point towards what we’ll see gaining popularity in the wedding world. This spring it’s all about colour with influences coming from spring flowers and travels abroad. You can expect to see brighter colours paired with their muted counterparts.

also work really well. Think organic materials for outfits and linens, traditional horse and carriage transport and beautiful rose petals scattered across the ground. If you and your fiancé really want to make your mark and create a unique occasion then the Quirky or Whimsical wedding is for you whatever floats your nuptial boat! One popular idea this year is the roaring 20s with The Great Gatsby look – feathers and silks, dropped waistlines, Art Deco, big bands and lots of glamour. If all the glitz and glamour leaves you cold and roses and romance is too soppy, then a more symbolic theme might be for you. Again, on the Costa del Sol, where better to say “I do” than barefoot on the sand with the lapping waves just inches away? Think billowing transparent fabrics and symbolic gestures such as lighting candles or a Sand Ceremony where you both pour coloured sand into a keepsake glass vase to symbolize your union. The sand can be coordinated to match your colour scheme.

COLOURS

Photography: Mireia Cordom mireiaweddings.com Flowers: Virginia at.virginiaflorista.com

Once you’ve decided on your theme it’s time to think of what colour scheme you’ll go for. After the popularity of neutral wedding palettes during the last few seasons, brighter colours are making a comeback in 2014. Pantone

There are three blues in the palette – royal blue, light blue and a paler blue and wedding colour gurus also predict navy gaining popularity – twinned with paler shades or contrasting colours such as bright yellow, pinks or greys –all of which feature in the Pantone predictions. Purple and violet both appear and these and all their corresponding hues from deep aubergine to the palest lilac are set to be a firm favourite this season – layered across décor, linen, glassware, lighting and florals. Pairing metallics with natural colours is a direction that can bring glamour to your wedding without overdoing things. Think of twinning matte gold with persimmon or silver with traditional white to create a shimmering, eyecatching ambience. For seaside weddings, aquamarine can be layered in shades and twinned with peach or pink. For organic themed weddings, muted shades of beige (Pantone predict a ‘sand’ shade) look great with the addition of one rich tone such as chocolate brown or forest green. Monochrome can look very striking – pair white chair covers with black organza bows and go for shades of grey for linens. The addition of one strong colour can make the look a little less stark. Whatever theme or colour scheme you decide on – remember it is your wedding and your decision should reflect you and your fiancé’s personalities and passions. Talk to your planner, family and friends; look at photographs (Pinterest is a great place for inspiration) and swatches of fabric before you make those all important decisions. After all – it’s your Big Day!

Humanist Wedding Celebrant and CONFETI contributor Natasha Johnson takes a look at the different ways that children of marrying couples can be included during a wedding day.

A family Affair

I

n today’s ever-changing society, where family units are more diverse than ever and many couples who tie the knot already have children, there has been a considerable change to the traditional practice of marriage. It is now very normal and very much encouraged to involve a child or children of the married-couple-to-be, not only on the big day in question but during the ceremony itself. Throughout all my years of being a wedding celebrant, I have been lucky enough to witness the fantastic ways that couples have been able to make their commitment to each other and their children and stepchildren alike, making sure that all members of the family feel that the special day is as much about them as it is their parents or step parent.

All together now Starting with the ceremony, there are so many ways that children can be an important feature and have a significant role during the wedding day. One couple I married a few years ago had five children between them and for them they did not think for one moment that their children would not play a great part in their wedding day. At the beginning of the ceremony, the bride and groom entered hand in hand, preceded by their five children. Then during the ceremony each child had written their own thoughts, poems, readings for their parents which they took turns to read out, right from the five year-old up to the teenager. And when their parents said their vows to each other, they created their own pledges that were not only to each other but also to their children. It was truly a beautiful family affair. During another children centered ceremony, the couples’ children along with some of the children of their friends and family members sang ‘Bare Necessities,’ from the Jungle Book. Needless, to say there were many tears of joy and laughter at their very sweet albeit higgledy-piggledy rendition. These are just a few of many possible ideas. 88 CONFETI

his step-daughter and welcoming her into a new family unit. This could also apply to parents who would like to declare their love and commitment to their own children. During the ceremony, each parent could say a few words about their children and re-iterate how the ceremony is not just the official union of them as a couple, but also an official declaration of them as a whole family.

The Vow factor

A wonderful welcome

Wedding vows are a very special way of formally acknowledging the love that parents have for their children and step-children and also gives them the opportunity to express their love and commitment to them publicly. Some couples choose to respond to a question vow, which is asked of them and then follow on with their own pledges to their partners and their children. Using a vow to express your commitment to your children, is possibly one of the most powerful and heartfelt gestures a parent can offer their child in this situation.

Acknowledging an existing child, is also a really wonderful way for step-parents to show their love and commitment to a child or children of their partner. At a recent ceremony, the groom wrote a letter to his step-daughter explaining how happy he was to be her friend and how much her loved her mother and could not wait for her to become his wife and how much he wanted them to be a family. He ended his letter with a pledge to be there for her if ever she needed him for anything and to respect and support her throughout her life. It was a truly beautiful way of acknowledging

For older children who are perhaps playing a role in their mum or dad’s second marriage, there are many great ways for them to be involved. I have seen teenaged boys giving away their mothers and teenaged daughters being the father’s best woman. Hearing a best woman speech written by the groom’s daughter not only filled the room with much laughter but tears too. Older children may also have the confidence to perform a reading or a speech, which will not only come from heart but will come from a unique perspective too. I have also been at weddings where teenage/adult children have played a lovely song on the guitar for the start of the ceremony and even a brother and sister

who sang during their mother’s wedding ceremony. How many people can say they were present at their parent’s wedding and that they had such an important role? And what a lovely thing to be able to say this too.

All round benefits It is good to remember however, that a child’s wishes should be respected too. It may well be that they do not want a big part during the proceedings and prefer to have a simple role, such as being a flower girl, brides maid, or usher. Or to be involved with wedding designs, helping to choose stationery, the dress, dad’s suit, their own wedding attire too. A role that is significant but perhaps does not carry any pressure with it or entail any public speaking! Every child is different and so it is always best to talk to them about it to find out what their thoughts are. Discussing wedding plans are also a brilliant way of making children feel like there involved in the special day. So even if your child decides they do not want to do their best theatrical rendition of a Shakespeare sonnet, at least they will feel that their contribution, whatever it turns out to be, is just as valuable.

An example of a beautiful vow which incorporates a couple’s children: Bride do you now choose Groom to be your husband? Do you promise to share you life with him, and pledge that you will love him, honour him and care for him during the changing circumstances of your lives? And as for the home you have already built together and the child/children you have together do you promise to uphold these vows to each other and your child/children?

Master of hisCraft

It must be nearly impossible for brides-to-be to select exactly the right team of people to be involved in the biggest day of their life, which is why CONFETI seeks to showcase some of the wedding industry’s greatest experts to our readers. Gregory Korvin, wedding film producer and photographer, is one such individual. Confeti speaks to the man himself to find out what makes Greg the perfect choice for capturing that allimportant day.

G

reg established his film and photography company ‘Sol Wedding’ back in 2006 with the sole aim of following his passion for the craft. Since then, he has travelled throughout Europe to capture the celebrations of hundreds of newlyweds and worked with brides from locations as distant as Kazakhstan, Egypt and Russia, making him one of the most established individuals in his field. Offering a range of three packages to suit any wedding budget, Greg has engineered an approach to wedding film and photography unlike anything else on the market. His attention to detail, in particular, is something that is apparent after viewing his wedding portfolio. Greg requests that all brides-to-be fill in an extensive questionnaire regarding plans for their special day and other clues to their personality such as ‘What best describes you as a couple?’ and ‘Do you have a favourite film?’ This immediately gives the photographer an insight

90 CONFETI

into the client he is working with and based on these answers Greg tailors the wedding package to suit. “We want to become almost part of the family”, Greg tells us as he flicks through photos of the Sol Wedding film crew embracing one particular bride from a past wedding after they had finished their day’s work. The Sol Wedding founder also places a lot of importance on meeting the couple prior to their wedding day so they can see for themselves what products are available. It is certainly impossible to appreciate the calibre of products offered by Sol Wedding and the craftsmanship involved without meeting Greg at his studio. The handcrafted wedding book included in the Sun Package for example, is made in Italy with the finest materials and bound in beautiful coloured leather, as chosen by the bride. This bespoke product is truly unique. Greg insists that a template is never used in the creation of the wedding album; instead he meticulously arranges the set

of photographs (as chosen by the bride from the personalised wedding photo website) to fit with the theme of her special day. It is after viewing the different Sol Wedding products that Greg’s background in advertising and corporate branding becomes noticeable. Whatever the package chosen by the couple, all of the products are uniform in their style. The wedding DVD, photo album, even the wedding calendar and mini-books, which provide the perfect keepsake for family and friends, share a consistent colour scheme and style to make the ultimate collection to remember your day. Another string to Greg’s bow is his film production. A crew of several cameramen descends on various Sol Weddings throughout the year to capture the most memorable moments of the day. These films can be loosely based on the theme of a real movie of your choice; past Sol Wedding movies have incorporated James Bond, Sex and the City and Pretty Woman themes. Complete with ‘Relax, It’s just a Movie’ Sol Wedding t-shirts and walky-talkies, the Sol Wedding team looks like a professional film crew and the result is nothing short of a blockbuster movie. As one client testimonial states, “We were delighted with the result, it is above and beyond anything we could have wished for. You really captured the magic of our day from beginning to end and have allowed us to re-live these precious moments over and over again.” The DVD can feature an uncut version of the wedding ceremony, the speeches, interviews with family members and even a set of outtakes. Greg also carefully selects a musical score to accompany the action and finishes the production with ‘credits’ or a running order of all wedding guests. “It’s quite funny actually”, Greg tells us, “nearly all of those brides who are initially unsure about opting for a wedding movie, end up preferring the wedding DVD to the photo album.” After viewing some sample DVDs for ourselves we can see that the production so masterfully transmits the emotion of the day that it’s almost impossible not to be moved by the scenes on screen.

Although the making of a movie could sound quite intrusive, the Sol Wedding team pride themselves on their ability to blend into the background of the day in order to capture the most natural of shots or scenes. “We almost want to be invisible for a day”, Greg laughs, “the camera is pushed back and we capture genuine emotion.” One Sol Wedding bride says, “We were initially against having a movie made as we feared the cameramen would be intrusive; however they were very discreet and we barely noticed them.” Equally so, the Sol Wedding team can adapt to more introverted personality types who need more direction in creating their perfect wedding shots. “We want to bring out the best in people”, Greg states. Sol Wedding’s services extend beyond photography and film production, from an online wedding invitation to the printing of ‘thank you’ cards, from a prewedding shoot in the Sol Wedding studio to the creation of table cards; Greg and his talented team can direct you every step of the way. It is clearly evident that Greg lives and breathes his craft and we urge future brides to meet with him to witness his creative energy for themselves. “It’s something I have never understood”, says Greg, “why couples limit their budget on the photography part of their wedding because it is this that will remain with you forever!” Check out all of the packages offered at Sol Wedding on their website at solwedding.com or like their page on Facebook. Flower crown: Price 85€

As the rustic antithesis of regal, the flower crown is becoming an ever more popular choice for brides on their wedding day. This look is unashamedly pretty, saluting current bohemian trends and signature wedding hues in an irregular band of flowers that adorn the head of the bride. Floral headpiece designs are extremely versatile and can be altered to suit the specifications of the bride - the more elaborate headpiece is complimented by a minimal gown while delicate strings of flowers could fit with enchanting, flowing dress designs. 98 CONFETI
