Inspired by the soft, soothing colours of Ladurée Macarons and pink frosted cupcakes, this season designers splashed their dresses with strokes of colour, including heavenly blues, and bridal blush tones. Don’t be afraid to show off your girly, sweet side in cotton candy pink or a creamy caramel colour or add a mouth-watering mint sash for a cooler finish. electing your wedding dress will be one of the most difficult decisions surrounding your wedding. In order to make your choice a little easier CONFETI is introducing our newest feature… Fashion Focus. Each issue we will take a closer look at one of the world’s finest design houses and offer you a greater insight into their style, history and most importantly, their gowns. This season we decided to start with a true star… the one and only, Ian Stuart. Ian Stuart’s passion for fashion, art, music and theatre is evident in every one of his creations. This passion was the driving force that determined his future as one of the UK’s leading bridal design talents. During his fashion education in London, the star specialised in bridal and eveningwear before earning a position at Bellville Sassoon, one of London’s finest couture houses who specialise in creating gowns for socialites and members of The Royal Family. This experience provided Ian with invaluable knowledge of cut, proportion, balance and wearability within design. Following this Ian went on to create biannual collections for leading bridal and eveningwear manufacturers in London before moving to New York to further his career. After collating more than a decade of knowledge it was time for Ian to launch his own line and The Collection Designed by Ian Stuart Ltd was born. a statement of romantic, feminine styles. The collection fuses the mesmerising glamour of old Hollywood icons, Vivien Leigh and Bette Davis, with the vintage style of 1930’s Paris. It features romantically sculptured corsetry, graceful scalloped hems and elegant sleeves, adorned with delicate flowers and twinkling crystals in a spectrum of antique metallic champagnes and silvers.

inspired by the golden age of cinema and the vintage style of 1930’s Paris. The collection comprises ethereal headbands, bracelets, 38 38 CONFETI
collars and belts in a spectrum of delicate tones, encrusted with intricate shimmering crystals. Opal pear and oval crystals emulate decadence whilst shimmering pearls add Old Hollywood style to a contemporary look. This graceful and feminine collection mirrors the vintage inspired beading in my bridal collection.

ucked away in a little side street in Puerto Banus, this suit hire shop exudes old school charm as well as offering generations of tailoring experience. Run by the wonderfully charismatic owner Nino Ramo, we are proudly shown a photo of his grandparents first tailoring shop that opened in 1854.
The shop offers a broad selection of items for hire – dinner jackets, morning suits, waistcoats, bow ties and handkerchiefs in a selection of colours and styles. Prices start from €70 and Nino offers group discounts if the whole wedding party needs to be dressed. Children and page boys can also be suited and booted with
morning suit sizes starting from 6 months! Once the suits have been chosen, they are adjusted to fit and this can be arranged up to one week before the wedding. The shop also offers bespoke suits for sale from €2000 and off the rack.

robably the best onestop wedding shop in Marbella, Santos y Eva is a beautifully fitted space on the main stretch offering bridalwear, accessories, shoes, mens suits and bridesmaid’s dresses. Established in 2003 by three sisters, this shop offers an impressive level of personalised attention with the rear half of the premises dedicated to dress fittings; boasting large mirrors and well lit changing areas. Offering a stunning selection of bridal designers such as La Sposa, San Patrick & Higarno-

vios.com vias, there are plenty of on-trend lace and vintage designs as well as modern and fitted dresses to choose from. For brides on a budget, the previous seasons’ dresses are also on offer for a fraction of the cost, starting at €495. Brides are encouraged to try on several dresses during their first appointment. Once they have made their choice, they can either come back for further fittings closer to the wedding date, or the shop can even arrange to courier the dress back to their home country where they can have their dress adjusted locally. As the prices are lower
in Spain, this often works out cheaper than buying the dress elsewhere. The sisters’ advice was that for the final dress appointment, the bride should always bring her wedding underwear and shoes to ensure a perfect fit. For grooms, the shop has many different styles of suits for sale starting from €190 and includes morning suits, dinner jackets and Italian cuts. Not forgetting the bridesmaids, any dress can be chosen and dyed to match the wedding colours exactly. With a beautiful selection of veils, hairpieces, brooches and shoes, this really is a little piece of bridal heaven.

Sukh and Sukheev celebrated their vows with four days filled with magical moments
OUR STORY
Sukh and I met through a friend; we were at a boat party even though neither of us really wanted to be there. However, we ended up speaking most of the evening and exchanged numbers. We met up many times after and before you know it, six years on we were engaged. In January 2011, we decided to take the next step in our relationship and introduce our families. To our great relief the meeting went well and Sukh and my sister began planning and ring shopping. In April 2011, Sukh arranged a meal out for us and our two friends to catch up, I just assumed it was going to be a normal evening. When we got to the restaurant we got a call from our friend who said his wife was unable to attend as she was held up at work and for us to carry on. Again, I did not think anything of it. We went to a private dining room, set up for four people. We had a lovely evening eating and drinking, then Sukh disappeared and when he came back, he closed the door and got down on one knee. He told me he would take
care of me for as long as he lived, and now that it was our time to be happy, he then asked if I would marry him. My first response was “about time� and I laughed and then screamed with joy. The restaurant staff were all involved as Sukh had been liaising with them for some time. They came in with champagne and we drank and talked and laughed. I then wanted to call my sister and my best friends but Sukh said to save it until later. So we walked along Charlotte Street and went to the Charlotte Street Hotel bar. I then went in to the main room where my family and my friends were waiting with champagne and cupcakes. It was amazing and could not have been more perfect. I was whisked to Edinburgh the next day for a few days of pampering. I then learnt I had the Monday off work as Sukh had emailed my boss to arrange to take me ring shopping. Sukh had picked a stone for me and just needed me to select a style. He really had thought of everything!

WEDDING BELLS
After the proposal, we started thinking about where to get married. My brother got married in the US and it was lovely as all our closest family and friends were present and everyone also enjoyed a holiday, so I knew I wanted to go along the same path. We looked into India, the US and Canada but everything was working out very expensive. Europe was our next option and we narrowed it down to Italy and Spain as both were nearby, amazing weather, great food and fairly feasible. We decided on Spain after my brother took a visit there and raved about it from the moment he arrived. I used to study Spanish at school and have always had a close connection to Spain. So we did some research and found everyone was very accommodating with large numbers. We researched extensively on planners and made a trip out there to meet with all of them and see a few venues. Fiesta Sol swept us away with their experience, immaculate planning, flexibility and professionalism. I knew I always wanted to get married outside as I find buildings quite constrictive and there is not as much scope for being creative. I had a vision of my closest family and friends enjoying a holiday as well as our wedding, lots of food, drinks and sunshine all spread out over a couple of days hence why we opted for a four day celebration. On day one we enjoyed welcome drinks and a civil blessing. We held this in the Haci-

enda San Jose villa in La Cala De Mijas. This had a Spanish theme and we opted for a burnt orange and marigold colour scheme. I wore a white bridal dress and carried a burnt orange and yellow coloured rose bouquet. In the evening, all the young hearted headed to Max’s beach bar, where we had hired an area. This gave everyone the opportunity to continue the party into the early hours. On the second day we held the Mehndi (Henna) Party, this was again in the Hacienda San Jose villa. We selected a Moroccan theme with touches of turquoise and mustard. We followed this with an Indian wedding at the villa on the third day and finally we held our reception on the fourth day at Finca la Concepción.
MOMENTS TO REMEMBER
Throughout the wedding period we enjoyed many magical moments that contributed to the overall event. I particularly loved the slide show at the reception featuring photos of us with our friends and family. We also had a video booth where our guests could leave
messages for us. Having a live band in addition to a DJ really added to the wow factor and the beautiful flowers and the chair ties at each event truly enhanced the décor. The speeches at our reception left us full of emotion and I even managed to make a speech, being able to see it through was an achievement in itself as I mentioned my mum who sadly passed away five years ago.

ne in six people alive in the world today lives in India. The under-5s in the population number twice the population of the United Kingdom. With such enormous numbers, and covering such a vast area, it is obvious that customs and traditions vary greatly, particularly between Hindus and Muslims. Other faiths, such as the Buddhists or the Jains, for another variant. It is only possible to give a very brief insight into what is, in effect, a very complex issue. To a Hindu, marriage is sanskara (a sacrament) in which purush (spirit) unites with prakritti (matter). One reads about marriage in the Vedas (sacred texts), which emphasise those values which are to be found expressed during the marriage ceremony itself. This is particularly so as the couple walk round the sacred fire, which is lit early in the ceremony, dedicated to Agni, the god of fire. Sandalwood, various herbs, oil and sugar are fed to the fire before the bride’s brother places rice into her hands, which are then cupped into the hands of the groom as together they make their offering to the fire.

They then perform mangalphera, where they walk clockwise round the fire four times to represent their four goals in life, dharma (religious duty), artha (prosperity), kama (earthly pleasure), and moksha (spiritual salvation). The bride leads the way to signify that she will always support and encourage her husband in all the vicissitudes of life. This is again emphasised by the saptapardi or seven steps which the couple undertake together. As they walk the priest intones the vows which they are making; which include to respect and honour one another, to share joys and sorrows, to trust and be loyal, to nurture friendship and love. The role of parents is emphasised when they bless the couple by sprinkling them with a rose dipped in water, and the couple touch their parents’ feet as a sign of love and respect. The father of the bride has also played an important part at the beginning of the ceremony, by placing his daughter’s hands into those of the groom, requesting that he accept her as an equal partner. The bride is a form of the goddess Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth
and prosperity, both earthly and spiritual, and the wife of Vishnu) and the groom represents the god Narayana (another name for Vishnu, the Supreme Absolute) The small dot of vermilion (sindhoor) which may be seen on the forehead of a married woman at the edge of her central parting, is placed there by her husband during the ceremony as a sign of his acceptance of her as his partner for life. Menhdi also forms
an important role. This is the practice of applying the hands and feet with a design traced in a paste made from the leaves of the henna plant. The design may be very intricate, and traditionally includes the names of the bride and groom hidden in it. The marriage is not consummated until the groom has found both names, and until the design has faded away the bride is not expected to perform any household tasks. The two faiths have much in common. In Jainism marriage too is largely a worldly event.

We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. Who would have known that 17 years later, I would be married to him! Bhavesh and I met again after some years at a fitness centre and we recognised each other straight away. We started to meet up as friends and realised that we shared the same interests however our friendship drifted slowly
apart and we became quite busy in our own lives but we would call each other now and again over the years just to catch up until one day we decided to meet, enjoying each others company so greatly we began to spend more and more time together before falling completely and utterly in love. Two years later, we had been well acquainted with each other’s family and friends and we had been on a few holidays together and we were definitely ready to take the next step in our relationship. It was just a case of him popping the question. Last September we

went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do. It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had known each other. He then suddenly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I turned around to see what he was pointing at, and as I looked down, a light shone on to the rocks where there was a sign that read, ‘Marry Me?’. I then turned back around to see that Bhavesh had got down on one knee! He told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life and more with me

We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.
I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.
ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…
The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain! I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

After the sounds of the Spanish guitar and a few champagne cocktails later, guests were ushered to the reception on the outdoor terrace surrounded by olive trees with suspended Chinese lanterns and wicker hearts. Surprises for our guests, and our selves, were ‘wow’ factors starting with flamenco dancing, speeches and performances from our loved ones to large glow sticks on our entrance, a live bongo player over a UK DJ spinning the best beats and then a firework finale. MAGICAL MOMENTS
There were so many fairy-tale moments during our three-day wedding that I couldn’t possibly list them all. Even now, amazing memories keep coming back to me. One of our favourites was at our mehndi night where floating sky lanterns were handed out to all the guests and everyone stood at the beach, lit their lanterns together, made their wish and watched them float into the air, over the seas and towards the heavens... what an amazing start to what was going to be the best days of our lives. The wedding day itself was truly amazing. I remember on the morning of the wedding, I was sitting in my hotel room in the Villa Padierna with my mum and my friends ran out in excitement to see the procession, a grand entrance with Bhavesh arriving on his magnificent and beautifully davidtoms-weddings.com

Nikki and Simon enjoyed a lavish weekend wedding surrounded by their closest family and friends
DAY 1 OUR STORY A friend of mine owned a bar near to my house where I would regularly spend my weekends, but had never visited during the week. One Tuesday evening, I decided to break the rule and headed along to the bar where I spotted a tall, dark shaven lad taking to a friend of mine. I have to say, he was stood in bright yellow hi-vis so hard to miss! We began talking and immediately clicked! From there we dated then moved in together before having our beautiful daughter Sofia three years later. Simon is always very prepared and the day he proposed he had been to the shops to collect lots of red rose petals and sprinkled them as a trail for me throughout the house all the way to my engagement ring! He then got down on one knee and proposed, to which my reply was an immediate YES! 64 CONFETI
When we were deciding where to get married, we both knew we wanted a beach wedding, with the sunshine and with a beautiful setting. I started planning the wedding 18 months before; we wanted somewhere beautiful with a modern white setting where our fuschia pink accessories would really stand out. Simon and I spent time looking through the shortlist of venues with Confeti until we found Puro beach; it was perfect and we knew immediately this was the venue. THE BIG DAY We decided on a harpist for the ceremony and I was not disappointed, Anna from Harp Marbella made my walk down the aisle even more romantic than I could ever have imagined. After the meal and speeches, all our guests were invited to make their way over to the dance floor, where Simon performed a much-practised saber with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot.
He sliced off the cork from the neck ensuring the champagne burst from the bottle into the crowd. It looked fantastic! Just after our first dance we welcomed the amazing Yanela Brooks, who arrived dressed in a superb silver glittering dress with microphone to match! She sung her heart out playing on the white grand piano and even singing amongst the guests, which they adored and still rave about. I have to say she was a perfect ending to a perfect day. FINISHING TOUCHES My parents had once seen the dancing horse; from that moment we knew we had to have them at the wedding. The dancing horse with the Señorita is based on a love story, the horse dances with the señorita to the beautiful music, it is such a romantic tale we were mesmerised. Cake Couture designed us the most wonderful cake and sweet trees, truly adding the wow factor! It wasn’t just the children that loved the sweet trees, the adults adored them too! As favours we decided that as it was going to be so hot the ideal gift for the women were handmade fans embellished with dried flowers. We had them engraved with our names and the date of the wedding and our ushers kindly handed them out at the ceremony. We then chose a Cuban cigar as a gift for the men, there again had our names and wedding day on them as a memory. For the children I chose to have boxes made for them with various entertainments, gifts etc. to keep them amused throughout the meal and speeches. This worked perfectly for those who were still awake! MOMENTS TO CHERISH I have to say that looking back, there is nothing that I would change; there were so many highlights to our day that it is so hard to choose any in particular. The dancing horse and Yanela were the most talked about by the guests, I think when you choose something out of the norm it is so hard for people to forget. Our perfect, amazing day will be remembered by us for the rest of our lives!

DAY 2 LET’S CELEBRATE! We wanted somewhere after the wedding where we could spend time with our guests in relaxed surroundings, where we could have a laugh and re-live the previous day. We stayed at the Cortijo de los Caballos for four nights with our close friends and family which was perfect as it gave us the opportunity to spend some special moments together. We decided to hold the after party at Cortijo de los Caballos on the Sunday, that way all the other guests could come to us and relax with friends.

TIME TO PARTY As the guests had arrived, a few were still feeling a little worse for wear considering some didn’t get home until 6:00am following the wedding. We thought that the best way for us to get the party started was to have some bold, bright and loud dancers. We were all sitting with our guests at the bar by the pool when suddenly we heard the loud drums begin. Walking towards us were the colourful outfits, big feathers and drums. They played music, danced
and even ate fire! The Brazilian dancers lead us, the bride and groom, over to the hog roast and bbq area where we all sat and ate. Once we had finished eating the wonderful food that Nigel from Chez-Vous had organised, the Brazilian dancers returned and encouraged the small children to dance with them, our best man even tried his flips on the dance floor along with mine and Simon’s fathers, this, as you can imagine was exceptionally entertaining!

Nights Zaid and Zaina Shuhaiber celebrated their nuptials in a beautiful contemporary yet classic celebration at Finca la Concepción. OUR FAIRYTALE Zaid and I met in Sept 2010 at a mutual friend’s engagement party in the Dead Sea, Jordan. Although we stayed in contact we didn’t have the opportunity to meet again until the friend´s wedding in June 2011. After spending our friend’s magical day together, we spent more and more time together and it went from there! Zaid then proposed on New Years Eve 2011 in Beirut in front of 2000 people. When it came to planning our wedding we selected Spain because it is the central area for us between the Middle East and UK and Canada where all our guests would be travelling from. We knew we wanted a candle lit, fairy-tale style, elegant celebration with everyone dressed to impress and able to party into the early hours. The first thing we did was decide on a colour scheme. We chose white and yellow to accent the beautiful gardens of Finca la Concepcion as we wanted the wedding to be contemporary and classic at the same time. We wanted to showcase the stunning old tree in the centre of the venue and our décor and theme truly accomplished and enhanced the beautiful setting.

The entrances were one of our most beloved moments. We decided to transform them into a scene from Swan Lake and arranged for ballerinas dressed in black to enter with Zaid, before a group of ballerinas dressed in white performed a routine before my arrival. It was truly spectacular and entirely unique, our guests raved about the entire ceremony. We achieved what we set out to achieve, creating an occasion all our guests would remember forever.

Our photo booth was also a brilliant success; we took lots of great silly pictures that will always be a constant reminder of how much fun we had on our wedding day. Another highlight was when the DJ announced that the ice cream truck had arrived. The look on our guests’ faces when they found out we had a red ice cream truck parked at the front of our venue was priceless!

Do you include the top tier in the serving or is it available to save for our one year anniversary? MY STYLE I think I am pretty good at making things that will look as realistic as possible, but rather than trying to impose my style to a client, I prefer to adapt my style to suit them. This is why, if you look at my portfolio, you will never see one cake that looks like another.
Do you offer alternatives to a traditional wedding cake? Brides can choose from round or square tiered arrangements, or cupcake towers which are made to impress. If brides have an idea or picture I can copy or we can start from scratch.
MY FAVOURITE CAKE FROM 2012 It is extremely hard to pick one, I loved each and every one of the cakes I made, and it was very hard to see some of them leave my studio, I would have loved to keep them and look at them… but that´s a wedding cake’s destiny!
How many wedding cakes do you produce a year on average? As years go by I have more and more demands, in 2012 I created 38 wedding cakes, and still have one before the end of the year.
Do you have a portfolio you can share with brides for inspiration? During my wedding consultations, not only do the brides get the chance to taste cake samples, but also we always go through a portfolio of my cakes and the latest cake trends. After discussing together the wedding theme, ambience, colours, the bride and groom’s likes and dislikes, I come up with a personalised sketch. This consultation is essential to produce the perfect design for each couple’s dream cake. I have also worked various times with couples in the UK that could not come to Marbella before the wedding. By exchanging many emails, we were also able to finalise their dream cake. The key for success is dialogue and no matter how many phone calls or emails it takes; I will always ensure I perfectly understand my client’s desires.

MY FAVOURITE CAKE FROM 2012 My favourite cake was an Eastern European design with an Arabic influence. The entire decoration and freehand drawing was made with the finest French organic fair trade chocolate and each layer was created using a different flavour; raspberry, praline, mocha and chocolate. What differentiates you from other cake creators? Our specialty is chocolate wedding cakes filled with a delicious Swiss-French mousse. We offer an array of flavours: raspberry, strawberry, chocolate, praline, caramel, mocha etc. This is something new on the wedding market! We think the cakes should taste as good as they look! We combine a traditional wedding cake with the finest Swiss pastry and instead of icing, we decorate the cakes with real chocolate. In addition we do offer traditional English wedding cakes. Do you offer the opportunity to sample your cakes? We offer to meet all clients personally before ordering to discuss

all the details. This includes tasting samples with different fillings and we also offer the opportunity to try our chocolate. This way we tailor make the cake to the bride’s exact requirements. This month CONFETI talks to one of the coast’s leading wedding photographers, Jeremy Standley. How long have you been interested in photography? Forever! My mum was a fashion photographer for Vogue in the 60’s so I have always been surrounded by cameras. How did you get started as a wedding photographer? The first wedding I shot was in Gibraltar a long time ago! To be honest it was the last type of photography I intended on doing but now cannot imagine doing anything else. What differentiates you from other photographers? Mmmm tough one really, all photographers do things differently and no two people see things the same way. I like to use light, reflection, contrast a little more than some people maybe and don’t use zoom lenses but I always strive to capture emotion first and foremost, content in the image is everything. How would you describe you photographic style? Creative documentary and a few funky portraits 84 CONFETI
What types of cameras do you use? Personally I have always favoured Nikon and for the last few years I have used d700 bodies and for 2013 I will use the new Nikon D4.
What is your favorite lens and why? 35mm 1.4, I could shoot an entire wedding with this lens, it is an acquired taste but for me I love the quality of this lens and the perspective.
How do you feel about cropping an image? I try to crop in camera when possible and very occasionally in postproduction. Even a slight crop can completely change an image
and its integrity so when I present my images I prefer to avoid cropping them wherever possible. What has been your most memorable assignment and why? All of them for one reason or another! I have also shot in Barbados and some amazing venues around Europe. They are all memorable; every wedding has a moment I will never forget but some more than others.

What do you feel you would be doing if you were not a photographer? Definitely something creative; I love branding and marketing it fascinates me, I did want to be a private detective once and maybe that helps me capture things other
How many images on average do you take at a wedding and how many images do you present to the couple? If I am shooting alone then anywhere from 3000 to 4000, that said I just got back from a Sikh wedding in Sitges and I shot 7500 images. How do you ensure the bride and groom feel relaxed in front of the camera? I only spend maybe 15/20 minutes maximum throughout the day getting some creative portraits and it is very laid back, a glass of champagne for the bride and groom never hurts but couples always enjoy it way more than they CONFETI 85
people may not see. (Don’t worry, I am not a private detective!) Do you have an assistant or second photographer to assist you on wedding assignments? It very much depends on the size of the wedding and the various elements involved. I don’t use an assistant at all weddings and most of my weddings that involve travel I document alone. I do have a very talented associate photographer called Ruth who will be working with Jeremy Standley Photography from November 2012. It is important for clients not to underestimate that having closely matching styles is crucial to well presented consistent images so a second photographer is not always an advantage.
What wedding albums do you offer you clients? I offer Queensberry from New Zealand which are incredible albums and I also use a small boutique company in Tuscany for 86 CONFETI
my other albums, the print quality and attention to detail is breathtaking. They produce all the books for most of the vineyards and olive oil producers in Tuscany and the quality is a very big deal.
What is it about weddings that you love so much? Everything!! but especially the emotion and little quirks that every wedding has and are so unique. Documenting a wedding

WCS Bespoke - Property, Concierge, Wedding Planning & Maid Services. What is your background? My professional background before starting the business is mainly working to a senior management level within the marketing, advertising, campaign management, event management and customer experience arenas within large bluechip organisations in the UK and in Australia. My professional career with respect to this lasted for 9 years prior to moving over to Spain to set up my business. This background provided me with the extensive project management and planning skills, supplier, logistics and budget management along with the essential contingency planning experience I rely on with every aspect of wedding planning. How did WCS Bespoke begin and why? I started up WCS Bespoke in February 2006 after moving over to Sotogrande, Spain. It was a natural step for me to choose a favourite family holiday destination with such beautiful properties, surroundings and excellent facilities to base my business. I started my business out of a back bedroom of my house, on my own, with a basic website and a few marketing leaflets. I did everything myself at the beginning which was quite a shock to the system going from managing multi-million pound marketing budgets, with extensive teams of professionals to support me, to crawling on my hands and knees often through hedges, trying to find out where a leak was coming
from! However, I can honestly say that I am never scared of getting my hands dirty to get a job done and I definitely know and understand every single aspect of my business from the bottom up! Initially the idea was to check on a few properties, make sure they had hot water and the AC worked and provide a welcome pack of groceries on arrival to a few clients. And finally, there is me, Clare – the owner and founder of the business. I am English but I speak Spanish and am in charge of the overall planning, management and delivery. I am the main point of contact for all of my brides and grooms. Are you hands-on when it comes to the planning process? Absolutely. Although I have an excellent and highly skilled team of people behind me, I am absolutely at the heart of the planning, organisation, co-ordination and communication of the weddings we arrange. What design elements do you feel are most important when planning a wedding? This will depend enormously on the bride and groom. However, personally, there are two elements that often get overlooked. Firstly, the small details such as the table layout and design. There are so many ways that this can be personalised and made really special without necessarily breaking the budget! Also lighting, I work with excellent professional technicians and they are magicians when it comes to lighting. A wedding can truly come to life and be magical when the lighting is right. It is such a shame when this is not factored in to the requirements. I remember one particular wedding where I spent a lot of time convincing a groom to trust the lighting technicians and he still remained a little dubious right

up until the sun went down. At this point he actually came to find me and said now he understood, now he knows what we were all talking about! Any advice would you give couples before beginning to plan their wedding? An honest relationship is really important to us. Remember it is your day and we want it to be perfect for you. Not delivering perfection is not an option for us. Ensure that you are clear on what you want and even more importantly what you do not want or don’t like. There is no benefit in being polite as we don’t take it personally – we want to deliver your perfect day and honest feedback and briefing is the best and only way forward! Scrapbooks and “ideas-boards” are an excellent tool. If you see something you like, rip it out and keep it as an idea and
talk to us about it and we can come back with ideas on how this can be incorporated into your day. Also, consider your budget and decide what is most important to you individually and as a couple. We can then ensure that we focus the attention and spend on the things that you both will love and remember. In addition to arranging the wedding day itself, what other elements can your team organise to ensure the entire wedding experience is as enjoyable as possible? Marrying in Spain By Padre Peter
N
ot to put too fine a point on it, getting married legally in Spain is currently a minefield. In essence, foreign nationals cannot get married in Spain unless at least one of them has resided in Spain (with ‘Residencia’ and ‘Empadronamiento’) for at least two years. Catholics can avoid this requirement, but still have to go through several ecclesiastical hoops. But such residence is not actually stated in any national law. It appears to be simply a local requirement of every

region in Spain, and one that is strictly enforced. Unlike Catholics, Orthodox, Protestant, Muslim, Jewish, you-name-it couples cannot legally register their religious ceremonies in Spain, but have to undertake a civil marriage in addition. They can, of course, qualify for a Spanish civil marriage if they meet the necessary regional requirements. (Franco once remarked that in Spain you were either a Catholic or nothing!) There is an alternative. Go to Gibraltar! Sean Connery and
John Lennon both opted for this method. There are no residency restrictions, and in theory one can get married with 24 hours notice, but the popularity of this venue is such that it is best to plan well in advance. The couple simply present themselves at the Registry with original birth certificates, passports, and, if divorced, the decree absolute. No photocopies are accepted. The Governor will graciously grant his permission and, hey presto, the dirty deed is done!. This does not, of course, affect
the situation in Spain, save to highlight the fact that the Ayuntamientos are missing out on a literally golden opportunity! For a civil marriage, the couple must make application on the official form obtainable from the local Registry or District Court. This must be signed by both bride and groom. It is then submitted to the Registry or the Court together with a number of other document. These include birth certificates, which must be originals of the ‘long’ variety, bearing the
Hague Apostille. (This is an international certification comparable to a certificate issued by a Notary Public in domestic law, and in the United Kingdom is issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In the United States it is issued by the Secretary of State of each state.) As with all the other documentation, an authenticated Spanish translation must also be submitted. Proof of Freedom to Marry must be given. In Spain this is called a ‘Fe de Soltería y Vida’, and is available from the Registry or the Court. A valid ‘Residencia’ must also be provided. In the case of divorcees, the original Decree Absolute, with Apostille and authorised translation, must be produced, and in the case of widows or widowers the first marriage certificate and death certificate are needed, again with the Apostille and translation. People under 18 years of age need to produce parental consent. (Almost 350 people aged 14-15 years have married in Spain since 2000!. For this to happen, a judge’s permission is required.) In some areas, when the couple
present their documents at the Registry or Court, they have to be accompanied by one or two witnesses of mature age (‘uno o dos testigos mayores de edad’) who also need to produce proof of identity. Once these documents have been accepted, banns are posted for a period of fifteen days prior to the licence being issued. As has already been noted, it is possible to have a Catholic wedding in Spain without the need for residency. However, a licence must first be obtained from the civil authorities by presenting the documents previously mentioned, although without the need for a Residencia. It is important to note that once the religious marriage has taken place, the Church certificate must then be presented to the District Registry or Court for registration. The couple will also require permission from the bishop of their home diocese, which is then presented to the bishop of the diocese in which they intend to get married, along with their birth certificates, a Baptismal Certificate (issued no more
than six months prior to the date of the proposed wedding and authenticated by the bishop of the home diocese), and a ‘Fe de Soltería y Vida’. This latter is more detailed than the civil requirement, and usually requires a sworn statement by the couple’s parents, witnessed by the parish priest. Divorced people cannot, of course, marry in a Catholic church. The civil procedures already outlined also apply to samesex couples, whether for marriage (permitted under Spanish law) or for the equivalent of United Kingdom ‘Civil Partnerships’. The religious regulations do not apply in such circumstances as the Catholic Church does not recognise such arrangements. For peace of mind it is necessary to start making plans and applications at least six months in advance of the happy day. Without being alarmist, it took one couple eighteen months… And this is where it would be greatly advantageous to the local authorities if they took it into their heads to apply na-
tional law, rather than regional custom. In Gibraltar marriages are normally conducted in the Registry Office. If a couple wish to marry elsewhere, this is permitted on payment of an additional fee. Why could not Spanish local authorities be similarly accommodating? There is no reason why the civil ceremony could not take place as part of a non-Catholic religious celebration (as used to happen in a small town near Marbella, where a local officer attended the ceremonies held in a local hotel, mouthed the legalities, and then left. She tended to appear in jeans and sloppy-joe, which rather detracted from the solemnity of the occasion!) All that is needed is for the local Ayuntamiento to drop its ‘Residencia’ requirement. The other documentation would still be required (and could well be organised by a Wedding Planner). Everybody would benefit. Many more people would wish to get married on our sunny Spanish shores, and the local coffers would benefit accordingly!

hink Father of the Bride and you will probably be thinking two things. One, the Steve Martin comedy (and I refuse to watch any more of the American ‘comedian’ after his God awful remake of ‘The Pink Panther’). Or you may have a vision of some poor chap who gets lumbered with all the bills at his little girl’s wedding. There is, however, much more to the role than simply ransacking the bank balance. The role of the Father of the Bride is traditionally (and unsurprisingly) taken up by the bride’s father, although it is not uncommon for another ‘fatherly figure’ to fill the void should that role be vacant for one reason or another. Whether it is the bride’s actual father or a suitable replacement, the characteristics of any great Father of the Bride are compassion, dignity, kindness, understanding and love – and a bit of money wouldn’t go amiss either!. When it comes down to Father of the Bride duties and responsibilities, there is more to do than simply writing out an endless stream of cheques – although it probably seems like it at the time. It’s a good idea for the Father of the Bride to talk about budget and financial obligations very early in the engagement. That way, everyone has a clear understanding of who is responsible for what and how much is allotted. More modern brides and grooms often pay for many wedding expenses themselves, so it may not be the financial white knuckle ride that you are expecting.

The responsibilities that the Father of the Bride will undertake will differ greatly from wedding to wedding, but traditionally they will carry out the following Father of the Bride duties:
* Liaising with their daughter
and her partner to see how they wish to go about funding the wedding and offering to pay for certain expenses.
* Travelling with the bride to the wedding ceremony.
* Accompanying the bride down the aisle. Everyone has seen the happy father of the bride escort his daughter down the aisle of the church and hand her to the groom. It’s perhaps the most poignant symbol of the wedding - a father passing the responsibility of his grown child to her soon-to-be husband. (As a side note I always cry at weddings. My friends take bets on how far into the ceremony I’ll start blubbing. The entrance of the bride with beaming father is normally a dead cert…)
* Travelling with the bride’s
mother from the ceremony venue to the reception venue.
* Standing in the receiving line
alongside the bride. The father of the bride and the mother of the bride are the official hosts of the wedding and reception. The father of the bride should plan on greeting guests at the reception, provide introductions and express thanks on behalf of the bride and groom for everyone’s attendance.
* Making the first of the wedding
speeches. During the reception, it’s traditional for the father of the bride to make the first
speech of the evening. Usually, the father of the bride speech will welcome the groom into the family and share some childhood memories of the bride. Whether the speech is sincere and emotional or lighthearted and warm is up to the personalities of the father of the bride, the couple and the setting.
* As part of the ‘first dance’,
dancing with the Bride’s mother when invited onto the floor.
* Sharing a father-daughter
dance at the wedding reception. If the reception has dancing, the father of the bride usually cuts in toward the end of the couple’s first dance to have a turn dancing with his daughter. Some wedding receptions are more relaxed and have a fatherdaughter dance with a special song selected by the bride for this moment (when in doubt, go for Ronan or Celine). As the father of the bride, just make sure you have clear instructions on when you are supposed to dance and with whom. I’ve covered dancing in previous articles. Let’s just say that as Father of the Bride you should try and keep it dignified…
* Your final duty is to be one of
the last to leave on the night, making sure that everyone gets away all right (and gently guiding the diehards away from the bar). Then there’s the small matter of making sure that all bills have been settled up… Good luck!

Remember this is a job interview on their part; you are the client and are looking to employ their services so they should be taking this as serious as any job interview. Do they come dressed in a suit or classy attire or a sweatshirt and jeans? You want to ensure your wedding planner will not only work hard but also look the part on your big day; no one wants a wedding planner running around in trainers and sweats on their wedding day. What experience do they have? A reliable and professional wedding planner should have a portfolio of their services and be able to show you images of their previous weddings and what they can create for you. Remember! You are in control; feel free to ask for references. Are they interested and enthusiastic about what you have to say? A wedding plan-
ner should be engaging with you and your partner and giving their professional opinion in what he/ she recommends and how he/ she is willing to work with the color themes you would like. Finally… never be afraid to meet with a selection of wedding planners before you make your decision. This is your special day and if you are going to be spending money on hiring someone make sure you are happy!
WHAT TO ASK? When you meet with a potential wedding planner make sure you have a list of questions to ask! Here is our top ten… 1. Do you have a business card? 2. What services do you offer? (It is important to decide from the beginning whether you require a wedding planner throughout the entire process or just on the day itself.) 3. Do you have references that I can contact? (If they do not have any references or are not happy to provide you with any… walk away!) 4. The colours that we have chosen are...what do you see in terms of décor? (Let them tell you, see how much they know about colors and see how creative they are.)

I started by working with another company as an assistant planner and then by complete chance I became a partner. I really wanted to focus on the decoration and creating an ambiance at a wedding guaranteeing a relaxed, stress free and memorable occasion for all our clients. We were selected by Brides magazine this year as one of the top 25 international wedding planning services. This year in fact I ended up calling a fellow planner from Marbella to find a guitarist for me as mine had sliced he´s hand open the day before the wedding and none of my other guitarists were available. Right on cue a young gorgeous flamenco guitarist walked through the door on time, immaculately dressed and did a fantastic job. If it had not been for our strong relationships then the bride would have been left with a Tres Divos CD. All reputable companies should provide you with a contract, terms and conditions covering all even-
tualities including cancellation and contracts with suppliers. Also you should have all of the company details including the registration number or CIF, address and contact details for the company. It takes a special kind of person to become a wedding planner, a lot of people only see the glamorous side of things which is basically going to a wedding every weekend of the summer but the job is tough and very emotional, the hours are long and always at weekends, our season starts in May and finishes in October, we work every weekend during that period, our days can sometimes reach 21 hours straight followed by an early morning start. You get personally and emotional attached to your clients, which is an extra factor to deal with. Saying that I wouldn´t change it for the world, I feel so lucky to be doing what I´m doing it especially in this part of the world, with the beautiful beaches, sunshine and the Spanish way. ntil 1939 it was still possible to get married legally in Scotland by the simple expedient of ‘Handfasting’. This comes as a surprise to many, but the custom is of very ancient origin. Quite apart from the act of marriage itself, it was also used to denote an engagement, normally for the period of a year and a day, before the actual marriage ceremony itself was performed. During this time ‘bundling’ was permitted, whereby the happy couple shared a bed (these were often in short supply in the crofts of the Highlands) with a bolster between them, or occasionally in individual sleeping bags. No hanky panky!. Those of a literary bent may well remember the suggestion of the Duchess of Malfi, in Webster’s play of that name, that she and her intended could pre-empt the marriage rite by climbing into bed with each other with “a naked sword between us, keep us chaste”. On careful consideration, perhaps a bolster was safer! ‘Handfasting’ is safer still. It is an old Celtic custom, which symbolises the joining of two people in marriage. It is the origin of the phrase to ‘tie the knot’, and of the custom during many Christian marriage services where the priest wraps the couple’s joined hands with his stole as he pronounces them ‘man and wife’. It also derives from the custom of shaking hands to seal a contract. You cannot shake hands if your hand is concealing a weapon!. The Christian Church was always very careful to adopt pagan rites and rituals when it felt that these could

be useful in evangelisation. Thus Christmas ousted Saturnalia, and the pagan goddess of spring gave her name to the feast of the Resurrection of Christ. In 1753 an Act of Parliament was passed which declared that marriages in England were only legal if performed by a clergyman. This did not affect the Scottish situation, and couples began to elope to Gretna Green to avoid the English clergy (in itself not a bad idea) and to handfast themselves before the nearest witness they could find. This was often the blacksmith, as his forge in the village was nearest the border. The presence of witnesses was important, as it is today, as technically a marriage is performed between two consenting adults, one male and one female (modern civil laws cannot alter this from the religious point of view). There is no need for a third party; the priest is merely present to give God’s blessing. The act itself is performed by the couple ‘per verba de presenti’ which means that it has to be witnessed by those present. And in any such act, the couple join hands to signify their willingness. ‘Handfasting’ reinforces this. Whilst facing each other, the couple join their right hands and their left hands together, forming a knot, whilst coloured ribbons, usually thirteen (to signify Christ and the twelve apostles), are bound round them. Each colour is symbolic. Red, for example, stands for passion, strength, lust and fertility. Blue stands for tranquillity, patience,
devotion and sincerity. Black stands for strength, wisdom, vision and success. In some traditions, however, only the right hands are joined, and the ribbons are tied at the wrist. This may be more convenient if the couple are following the custom of being unbound only when the marriage has been consummated!. At other times, the wrists are unbound after the priest has said something like “the knots of this binding are not formed by these cords, but by your vows. You hold in your hands and hearts the making or breaking of this union”. Whilst tying the knot, the priest may well have already emphasised the permanent nature of the act by saying something like “These are the hands that even when wrinkled and aged, will still be reaching for yours, still giving you the same unspoken tenderness with just a touch”. ‘Handfasting’ is not, of course, confined solely to the British Isles. In Germany, for example, ‘Handfasting’ was considered legally binding amongst the nobility, but with one subtle distinction. If the right hand, or both hands, were used, the act was final. If, however, the left hand was used, then it merely signified that the man concerned was merely taking on a mistress, who could have no claim to his wealth or title. But equally, any offspring would be cared for. This not only protected the mistress and her children, but also provided the noble with additional security either in his old age, or in the case of dynastic conflict. At
the same time it protected the inheritance of his legitimate children. Such protection is also signified in the custom of giving coins at weddings. Once again, thirteen are employed, signifying love, trust, commitment, respect, joy, happiness, harmony, wisdom, unity, nurturing, caring, cooperation, and peace. In Spain, and in other countries once under Spanish rule, this custom is known as the ‘Arras’. The coins, once of gold or silver, but nowadays usually of gold or silver plate, symbolise the bride’s dowry. During the ceremony the groom presents the coins to the bride to symbolise that he shares everything with her, and that his wealth is her wealth. She returns them to him to symbolise the trust that she places in him to support and defend her. How this is done varies, but it usually involves the coins being poured from the groom’s hands to the bride’s, and vice versa. In some traditions, the coins are then permitted to drop into a plate for presentation to the Church, but more generally, if they are presented by a sponsor, they are kept as a keepsake. As an addition to this little ceremony the couple may then be yoked together by a lengthy rosary, which hangs round both necks, with the central crucifix hanging between them. There is, in fact, no end to what can be incorporated into that service which binds two hearts together!

Each year this exciting event, brings together over 300 exhibitors, from wedding cakes to bridal boutiques, all under one roof. As well as taking planning notes, guests were treated to fabulous hair and beauty tips from industry professionals on the 98FM Style Stage. Stephen McCusker, from Stephen International hair salon in Lurgan, and make-up artist Danielle Murphy interpreted the key hair and beauty trends. Maire Forkin, Lorraine Tierney from Truly Bridal and Paula King from Tamem Michael took on styling duties, sparking dress ideas with crucial wedding fashion advice. The show highlight was when the ‘Win a Wedding’ finalists took to the stage. After a brief

With the so called ‘minimoon’ becoming more popular than ever, Belle Roberts and her husband decided to put it to the test, opting for a chic, short honeymoon break at a country retreat in Hertfordshire. West Lodge Park Hotel is a 4 star hotel set in 35 acres of grounds with easy access to the capital and surrounded by glorious countryside.

e were greeted at reception by the extremely welcoming and efficient manager. As we were ‘first timers’ he kindly gave us a guided and very informative tour. West Lodge has the feeling of being extremely cosy as opposed to grand. Warm soft furnishings balance the large bay windows allowing you to take in the glorious views, while quirky touches such as wellington boots and your own umbrellas to borrow during your stay add a homely feel. Our room boasted incredible views over the grounds, and with the addition of a jacuzzi bath, Egyptian cotton linen and sumptuous goose feather and down duvets and pillows, a good night’s sleep was pretty much guaranteed. individually decorated rooms offer excellent facilities with views over the arboretum. Some rooms have four-poster beds; others boast their own terrace gardens. Desperate to explore the grounds, we quickly changed and made our way outside. The Beale Arboretum consists of a large and interesting collection of trees. There are some 800 different varieties, many are established, but a large number have been planted in the last 40 years. A new addition to the grounds at West Lodge Park are the bee hives, installed this spring. The honey is available to purchase at the hotel reception making it the ultimate local food. After our rather long walk, it was thankfully time for supper, as I
was famished. The highlight of our stay had to be the memorable dining experience, sampling the gastronomic delights on offer. The Mary Beale Restaurant and Terrace Bar has recently been extensively refurbished to a very high standard incorporating a contemporary feel with a hint of traditional features such as original paintings. The restaurant is named after the stunning artwork by Britain’s first profes-
sional woman painter and many of her original works adorn the walls. Upon perusing the evening menu I was delighted to see that the hotel endeavours to source their food locally wherever possible. They work with local suppliers and organisations that assist in their quest for good quality local produce proudly grown in Hertfordshire and neighbouring counties. I loved the fact you could see
exactly where your food had originated from and how far it had travelled. For our starter we both opted for the Shetland king scallops, white sausage and red wine dressing. I followed this with sea bass, sauté jersey royals, flat leaf parsley and tomato fondue, while my husband chose Blix’s farm lamb, roast loin, lyonnaise potatoes, kalamata olives, semidried tomato, balsamic and thyme. My hubbie was ecstatic to find soufflé on the sweet menu; it is his absolute favourite pudding. West Lodges take on this dessert with candied ginger and vanilla anglaise, didn’t disappoint and actually kept him quiet for a good ten minutes. The whole experience was truly delightful and I would recommend it to anyone. The morning of our departure, I took off my shoes, enjoying the fresh grass under my feet whilst feeding the ducks. I felt relaxed, rejuvenated and reluctant to leave this idyllic, beautifully English, country retreat. I just hope my hubbie has picked up my hints for us to return for our first anniversary.

After spending her hen weekend in Marbella and enjoying dinner at La Sala restaurant, Kym Marsh returned home to the UK to marry partner Jamie Lomas. The soap stars were joined by a variety of their co-stars, past and present, to celebrate at at Nunsmere Hall Hotel in Cheshire. The Coronation Street actress carried a box containing her son Archie’s ashes with her during the ceremony so he could be with them during this special time, “little Archie isn’t here today, but we know he’ll be looking down” revealed Kym in an interview with OK! Magazine.
