It was a natural progression for me to become involved in bridal fashion design since... I’m from a bridal family! I was born into it, since both my parents worked in bridal design, manufacturing and retail from the 1960s to the 1990s. My family owned several bridal boutiques across the U.K and a manufacturing business that supplied independent boutiques, both in the U.K and internationally. My daughter is ‘Charlotte Balbier’ and you recently featured her lovely wedding in your magazine. We’re both delighted to be continuing the family tradition of bridal dresses. Both Charlotte Balbier and Amanda Wyatt are huge successes in the UK and internationally and I’m very proud of what we’ve both achieved. I’ve learned a great deal from Charlotte in terms of social media - she is great at tweeting and keeping in touch with her brides.
I specialized in bridal gowns because... Following in my parents’ footsteps was a natural, fulfilling choice. It is a lovely industry to work in, since it is wonderful to be part of a bride’s big day! My parents are trained seamstresses and tailors so they taught me about both the making of the gowns and the commercial side of the business when I was a child. I started working in the business in my teens so I have many years of experience, knowledge and expertise. It’s a delightful and happy industry to work in.
Personally, I’ve forever loved... Chiffon fabrics. I quickly became famous for my soft chiffon gowns and paired-down styling that was considered a breath of fresh air after the 80s ‘frou frou’ gown. Our brand has stuck to this ethos and delivers fresh and modern dresses to brides.

I predict that bridal design in 2015 will feature... Plainer silk dresses with beautiful body shapes. We saw a trend towards ‘less is more’ at Brides The Show in London last week. A bride may be looking for a plainer dress so she can add lots of accessory details. Our ‘Corina’ dress with the lovely boat neckline from the latest ‘Blue Iris’ Collection is an example of this evolving trend.

Next year’s collections. I’m a magpie for new materials and trims so I am constantly on the hunt for inspiration. We do our own Amanda Wyatt catwalk show to launch the new collection in April and it’s always a huge success! We invite all our stockists and journalist fans along for a lovely party to celebrate.
My favourite celebrity wedding is... That of George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin. The whole wedding was so romantic, with the star-studded guestlist arriving on boats to the ceremony in Venice. Amal Alamuddin looked absolutely stunning throughout the whole run up to the wedding. Venice was such a beautiful setting for a wedding and she looked gorgeous in an off-the-shoulder dress.
When choosing an Amanda Wyatt dress, brides can expect... A great fit. I also love to inject a bit of fun into the bridal gowns. The ‘Primula’ dress in the latest ‘Blue Iris’ Collection is a great example of this. The gown is adorned with lovely chiffon flowers. It also has a detachable chiffon sash so the dress can be worn many different ways.

I would love to dress... Pippa Middleton. She seems a little more adventurous than her sister Kate in terms of the designers she chooses to wear. She is looking rather cosy with her beau Nico Jackson so I am pretty certain an engagement could be on the cards soon! I can see Pippa looking rather fabulous in our Amanda Wyatt ‘Shelly’ dress from the ‘Blue Iris’ Collection. The dress has Art Deco inspired beading with diamante stones that would really give Pippa the WOW factor!
For a destination wedding, I would recommend... A lighter dress with less fabric. From our new collection, the ‘Ashleigh’ dress would be a fabulous choice for a 50s inspired look for the beach. Our ‘Skylark’ with spaghetti straps and chiffon is also a great timeless dress for a beach wedding.

My advice to a bride choosing her gown is...
To buy it 18 to 12 months prior to your wedding. Some gowns can take between three to six months for production and fittings, so avoid unnecessary stress and buy your gown in plenty of time for your wedding. You need to bear in mind that your gown needs to be made and then altered. You may require several fittings and it can be tricky to find the time to schedule these in with busy lifestyles and busy bridal boutiques.
My biggest achievement to date is...
The fact that the Amanda Wyatt brand has been successful in this industry for such a long period. We aspire to create dresses for all ladies of any shape and size so everyone can look fabulous on their bridal day. Forever Oscar When news of Oscar de la Renta’s death hit us back in October, the fashion industry mourned the loss of one of its most renowned clothing designers. His gowns forever graced the red carpet as film stars and royalty alike chose to appear in his gowns. We take a look back at the way in which Mr Óscar Arístides Renta Fiallo contributed to the world of fashion design right up until he passed away aged 82.
Oscar de la Renta 1932-2014
Best of Bridal Aside from creating gowns for the world’s most prestigious award ceremonies and momentous occasions in world affairs, Oscar de la Renta created numerous collections of bridal dresses. Whether a household name such as George Clooney’s new lady Amal Alamuddin or not, the designer made every woman feel like a princess. His very last
commission was Amal’s gown, which was an off-the-shoulder design with a lace overlay. According to Vogue, the train of Amal’s dress consisted of so much fabric that her 12-year-old flower girl was unable to carry it. The Daily Mail reported that the acclaimed barrister told US Vogue: ‘George and I wanted a wedding that was romantic and elegant, and I can’t imagine anyone more able than Oscar to capture this mood in a dress… Meeting him made the design process all the more magical, as he is so warm and such a gentleman.’

“Be the designer of your own destiny” Fashion Royalty Oscar was one of those people who seemed to have lived a thousand lives, from tales about Marquis de Cuevas’s famous costume ball to Marie-Hélène de Rothschild’s dinners. But how did this man, born in the Dominican Republic, rise to such heights in the fashion world? At the age of 19, Oscar moved to Spain to study painting but spent most of his time sketching dresses. When one of his sketches was published on the cover of Life magazine, he quickly received an invitation to complete an apprenticeship at Balenciaga. Oscar subsequently left Spain to work as a couture assistant at Lanvin in Paris. From 1993 to 2002, de la Renta designed a haute couture collection for Balmain, thus becoming the first Dominican to design for a French couture house. In 2006, he diversified into bridal wear and the rest is history.
Looking Ahead British designer, Peter Copping has since been announced as the label’s new Creative Director. At the helm of Nina Ricci, Copping took the fashion brand into new realms of femininity, playfully distorting fashion staples such as satin blouses, tweed jackets and little black dresses by adding asymmetrical fur collars and lingerie details such as lace trim. Taking the reins at Oscar de la Renta, Copping will showcase his first collection for the haute couture fashion house at New York Fashion Week in February 2015.

hen it comes to planning a wedding aboard, you already have the confusion of what, when and how regarding flowers, location and photographers. However, one of the biggest concerns for many brides is “Who’s going to do my hair and make-up?” and “How am I going to look?” As with many countries around the world, here in Spain there are countless make-up artists available to assist with your wedding makeup, however I would recommend that you find a trained professional.
This all depends on the personality of the bride. I will always explain the importance of framing an eye with a darker shade, as your eyes will appear more apparent and bigger in the photos. When I first started in the business the trend was for a soft, elegant natural look, however fashion and wedding trends have changed especially here in Spain. Brides are now opting for a more striking & glamorous look. I normally like to do an elegant smoky eye, which ties in with the bride’s individual style, wedding dress, skin and eye colour - these all play a huge part when choosing the right colour eye shadows. I love to make the eye prominent while still keeping it subtle enough that no one could comment “she’s wearing a bit too much make up” - there’s a fine line between the two.
Should you always have a makeup trial if you are getting married in aboard and, if so, why? I think a trial is a great idea, it puts your mind at ease that the look you want will be the look you get on your big day. It is always great to meet the people who will play a part in your day and discuss different option and styles. A trial ensures you have made the right decision. Many people will claim they can do make-up but are not actually a fully trained professional makeup artist. This way having a trial will ensure you are working with somebody capable and that you will be happy with the final look. What foundation would you recommend when getting married in a hot climate like Spain? There are so many products on the market but I predominantly use MAC cosmetics. Depending on the coverage each bride requires I will often use either a tinted moisturiser or a very light foundation as opposed to a “full coverage” foundation which could make them feel more uncomfortable in the heat and make their skin perspire. It is extra important to use a good quality primer and powder, this will ensure your wedding make-up stays on all day and reduces the 46 CONFETI
shine which may be caused by excess perspiration and will reflect in the photography. How do you ensure my wedding make-up will stay on all day and night? Simple - with a great application of make-up, good primers and a face fixer you will have no worries
about your make-up coming off during the proceedings. I like to use primers that helps fix the foundation and on top of this I use MAC HD translucent powder that has a fixing agent ingredient. To finish it all off right at the end, I use MAC Face Fixer - a spray that holds everything in place. I can guarantee that it will last all day and into the early hours of the morning, I have brides who can’t believe how their make-up has stayed on all night. Which look is better natural or glamorous? Is there a particular trend for weddings abroad?
Can a bride request to use her own make-up on her wedding day? I like my brides to feel as comfortable as possible in the make-up they are wearing. If a bride prefers to use their own products, i.e. foundation or a particular eye colour - I am more than happy to do so and will make the necessary recommendations regarding additional, or alternative products, so their make-up looks flawless on their wedding day. C Features Editor Amber O’Shaughnessy recently had the privilege of speaking to event planner extraordinaire, Marina Grishko. Having designed and organised elegant and luxurious weddings and other special events around the globe, Marina is now based in Marbella, Spain and continues to deliver a world-class service.
It is lovely finally to meet the lady behind these magical events! How did you discover your talent for organising such affairs? It all began as a kind of hobby, I guess. I would often organise parties for myself or for family and friends. People would always comment on my knack for conjuring up unique ideas for events and my ability to have everything organised no matter the time scale. I would also organise our family holidays rather than go through an outside travel agency so I started to realise that I had quite a skill for this type of thing.

Then I read an article in a newspaper, which spoke about how easy it was to start up an event planning business; it required little initial funding and I noticed that there were very few companies in Russia (where I was living at the time) that delivered top quality events. I organised my first wedding in 2003 and it was a huge success! How did the progression from one wedding in Russia to hosting events all around the world occur? Within two years I had my first international wedding. The wedding took place in Turkey at
an edgy, minimalistic hotel. The entire theme was white; we strictly kept to this colour scheme and the end result was stunning. Still to this day, the hotel has an image from the wedding on its home page. I brought the same high standards of service, excellence and attention to detail to each of my events and soon I was working everywhere from Italy and France to India and Thailand. So you know no bounds in terms of where you will go to arrange an event, but do you have restrictions in terms of the events you take on? Absolutely not, I organise
anything from a Jurassic Park themed children’s party with life size dinosaurs to the most intimate proposal dinner between two lovers. How do you continue to find such unique locations for weddings? I am forever on the hunt for distinctive wedding locations. Travel is so important; wherever I go in the world I dedicate a couple of days to exploring. This way, when I meet with brides to be, I can recommend specific places because I have been there myself. Travel is also crucial because I see the world with different eyes. When I visit a place,
I envisage pink peonies here or a candlelit table centrepiece there and the place comes alive before me. This is very different from viewing a potential venue online through a website. What do all of your events have in common? I always try to incorporate something unusual into the event, no matter how small, just something that your guests have never seen before. For me, my worst nightmare would be to create a wedding that is generic. I make sure I speak regularly with each client so I can find out his or her hopes and desires. I see every single client as an individual, as such I don’t offer ‘packages’ but tailor the event so that my client has the event they have always dreamt of.

If you do it right, the energy in the room just soars to the level that is normally reached only later on, when the dancing and drinking begins. At one wedding in Lake Como in Italy, we organised doubles for the bride and groom to sail into the venue on a speedboat but fall into the lake as they stepped out of the boat. Every guest in the room looked on horrified until the actual bride and groom walked in from across the terrace to everybody’s delight. It started the wedding on such a high and set the scene for an unforgettable day and night.
The sky really is the limit then! What is the most outrageous request you have had from a bridal couple for their wedding and were you able to arrange it?
At a James Bond themed wedding in Cyprus, we had the bride land for her wedding by helicopter on the helipad that was situated at the end of a pier, whilst the groom swam in from the sea. I gathered all of the guests on a fourth floor balcony of the hotel, giving each of them a pair of binoculars to watch the scene unfold. Again, everybody could not quite believe his or her eyes.

Yes, the best bit is most definitely the wedding day, when I finally get to see my small initial idea grow into one unforgettable event. You obviously have years of event planning experience from your time living in Russia, but what are you hoping to bring to the Costa del Sol? Russians are very particular about their parties and have an eye for the most minute attention to detail and want only the best. My experience in Russia has inspired me to continue in this way. I have spent a lot of time sourcing the right suppliers and finding interesting venues as I only
want to work with the very best people in whichever country I am in. From my years of working with an international clientele, I have suggestions and ideas to suit people of all nationalities. here is nothing like a wedding to invoke sentiments of tradition, to make us turn to customs of old in order to inject some formality and etiquette into one of the most special days of our lives. And weddings are full of traditions! From the bride wearing something borrowed, something blue, something old and something new, to not seeing her groom on the night before and morning of the wedding, there is a tradition that governs nearly every aspect of the process. However, as we begin to modernise our weddings more and more and look for ways to add new customs and create more personalised

wedding days, many of the traditions of old are beginning to be abandoned and even considered by couples as old fashioned and, in some cases, simply no longer relevant. Natasha Johnson, writer and Humanist celebrant, takes a look at eight ceremony traditions, which - if you wanted to - could easily be left out of your big day.
Walking down the aisle with your father
It may seem quite controversial to start off with a tradition which is quite possibly the most loved and practised of all wedding traditions, yet it is increasingly becoming the case that more and more couples are considering other ways to make their grand ceremonial entrance. There are some brides who will never be swayed on this matter and want nothing more than their fathers to walk them down the aisle and this, of course, is absolutely fine. However, more and more brides like the idea of including their mothers in this special role and so have chosen to make their entrance with both their mums and dads. If you feel that doing this may diminish your father’s role slightly, don’t forget that he will still have his speech, too! Many couples also use this once-in-a-lifetime chance to enter their wedding ceremony together. There is something very symbolic about this, especially as we are now at an age when most couples are already living together before marriage, so why not continue that sentiment with your ceremony entrance and face the walk down the aisle together? There are many alternatives too, such as walking down the aisle with siblings or a close friend or relative with whom you have a special relationship and would love to give the honour of accompanying you down the aisle.
The giving away
This tradition stems from the father-of-the-bride being the head of the household who not only walks his daughter down the aisle but also publicly gives his permission for his daughter to be married. Some of the more traditional brides who have the most traditional ceremonies still like the idea of having a
formal ‘giving away’ process where their fathers stand, make a proclamation and then places their daughters’ hands in their son-in-laws’. As with some of the reasons in point number one, this tradition is one of the oldest and perhaps one of the least relevant, as more and more people recognise that no-one owns anyone and no-one is anyone’s to be given away! For brides and grooms who would feel uncomfortable with this taking place during their ceremony or who feel that its practice has no relevance to them, there are now many alternatives to having just one person give their blessing to the union. Why not have all your friends and family give their blessing to your union en masse? Many celebrants and clergy often ask a public vow of all those present, which is a great way of having your relatives and peers publicly support you. best woman? You need only watch the film My Best Friend’s Wedding to see how amazing (eventually!) Julia Roberts is as her male best friend’s best woman. I have also had ceremonies where daughters, sisters and best friends have served as best women and it has been such a refreshing element to the ceremony. So if the groom’s best friend or special person that they want to represent them on their wedding day is a woman, then go for it!

There is no doubt whatsoever that this tradition is steeped in romance, however in this day and age, there are definitely more reasons why it is nicer for the groom to watch his beautiful bride walk down the aisle than not. I always remember my husband saying to me how special it was for him to see me making my walk down the aisle and I do remember that moment when our eyes met. The walk that a bride makes down the aisle is a pivotal, life-changing moment, so it seems a shame that the groom is destined to be the only one who does not get to see it. Some brides are worried that if their groom turns around
they would be too nervous or they would start crying. However, you will be nervous anyway and more than likely you will be crying too, so I don’t think it would make that much difference! When, at the start of the ceremony, a groom asks me if he should turn around, I always say, “yes”. I love seeing in their eyes how glad they are that they turned around. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing the woman you love walking towards you, looking you in the eye and letting you know that you are loved.
Best man? Best woman?
Gone are the days when a best man has to be a man. If the groom’s best friend is a woman, then why not have a
Wedding party - what wedding party?
I am seeing more and more weddings where there is no official wedding party and I must say I rather like it. Although I love the idea of having a wedding party, I think it is important that couples know that having one is very much optional. In talking about the wedding party, I am referring to bridesmaids, flower girls, best man, ushers, groomsmen etc, all of those traditional roles that we give to our closest friends and family. Many couples feel that there are too many special people in their lives and so prefer the idea of not giving any roles to anyone. I have seen grooms carrying their own rings, unofficial ushers showing friends and families to their seats and speeches being requested from CONFETI 55
selected guests, rather than the usual suspects. It is a brave move to do away with your wedding party, but there are so many other great ideas and fun ways to have people help you on your wedding day without giving them an official role or title.

Not facing your friends and family When you get married in a church, it is more than likely that the vicar or priest will ask you to face the altar (and therefore God) throughout, or for most of your ceremony, just as Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge did. This means that for most, if not all, of your ceremony you will have your backs to you guests, unless you have a more modern church ceremony where this is not asked of you. So, if you are not getting married in a church, where there is no altar, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever why you should stand with your backs to loved ones. Considering that one of the reasons why you are getting married is to publicly declare your love to each other, it would seem a shame to declare that love with your backs to your guests. And again, as with all of the ceremony traditions, there are so many great alternatives, including standing side on to your guests or, better still, facing them.

By doing away with this tradition you can still have close family sitting at the front but one does not need to be so rigid about where they sit and on what side. It is, for example, a nice touch to have both sets of parents sitting at the front together, on the same row and both sets of siblings sitting together too. This tradition is definitely one of the easiest to abandon and with some of the best alternatives.
Pick seats, not sides
A wedding day is about the public union of the couple in question in the presence of their family and friends and one of the traditions most at odds with this is the custom of having your guests separated for the ceremony, to the left and the right. depending on their relationship to the bride or groom. Nowadays, friends and families are so indistinguishable and many couples have very close-knit groups of friends that 56 CONFETI
Saying traditional vows
You will have heard of the following set of wedding vows, or they will sound familiar to you, because they are the most common and traditional. Bride, do you take Groom to be your wedded husband, to live together in marriage? Do you promise to love him comfort him, honour him and keep him, for better or worse, for richer or poorer

Of course, there is nothing wrong with these traditional vows, especially if you feel that they resonate with you and that they represent exactly what you think and feel. However, as these vows are only traditional and not a legal requirement now, more than ever, you have the scope to state vows which are of a more personal

The most important advice that I can give is simply to remember that traditions and customs are not compulsory components of your wedding, so if there is a traditional aspect that you no longer agree with or even perhaps, never ever really understood the point of, then you don’t have to include them in your day.

he famous British satirical magazine “Punch” had as its subtitle “The London Charivari”. It was established in 1841 by Henry Mayhew, and finally closed its doors in 1992. It was in this periodical that the term “cartoon” achieved its modern meaning (as opposed to a mere drawing), but there is nothing particularly funny about the wedding custom known as “Charivari” (or “Shivaree”) from which it derived its name. In its origin it was innocent enough. The word basically means a lot of noise, and in the Middle Ages it was a regular celebratory wedding activity. Gradually, however, it

turned from expressing approval to registering disapproval. The activity became so bad that a 17th century Church Council banned its practice and threatened those who took part in it with excommunication. The Council did not want lay people deciding upon what was or was not socially acceptable. This was the domain of the Church. For example, widows who got married before what was considered an acceptable period after the death of their previous husbands were subjected to a barrage of noise during the night to disturb their newly married bliss. Suspected adulterers were pursued through the streets in a mock “hunt”, which
often ended in physical assault, and blood would be spread upon their doorsteps. Such activities sometimes led to grave disorder. Records exist in the south of France showing that on more than one occasion the victim fired on his accusers, resulting in death. The early French settlers took the practice to north America and Canada. On June 28th, 1683, the people of Quebec carried out a loud and disorderly charivari against the widow of a certain François Vézier and her new husband, for marrying only three weeks after the death of her old one. In north America houses were broken into during the night,
the “happy” couple seized, and carried from their home to be thrown into horse troughs. As time went on, however, the original use of the custom began to re-emerge. Nevertheless, in Tampa in September 1885, when “the wildest and noisiest of all the chivaree (sic) parties in Tampa’s history” lasted until daylight, the music was reportedly “hideous and unearthly beyond description”. And this was in honour of the marriage of James T. Magbee, a radical and popular local Union politician! The practice has thankfully largely died out today, but a remnant remains in the driving through the streets of

cars sounding their horns, and the tying of tin cans to the rears of vehicles as bride and groom are taken off to their “honeymoon”. This word first appeared in English in 1546, but a dictionary definition of 1552 gives it a rather unfortunate meaning: “Hony mone, a term proverbially applied to such as be newly married, which will not fall out at the first, but th’one loveth the other at the beginning exceedingly, the likelihood of their exceadinge love appearing to aswage, the which time the vulgar people call the hony mone.”—Abcedarium Anglico-Latinum pro Tyrunculis. In other words, the initial first love begins to wane like the phases of the moon, and just as quickly! A kinder explanation of the term dates back to ancient Babylon, where the new father-in-law was expected to assuage his new son-in-law’s thirst with a month’s supply of “honey-beer”. This was certainly a custom amongst the Vikings, where the bride and groom went into hiding for a month or so, often to escape vengeful relatives from whom the groom had abducted the bride. Relatives of the groom kept the couple supplied with mead to keep up their strength. Such abductions took place from time to time throughout the centuries, and one of the main duties of the Best Man was to stand by the groom to keep watch against any last minute attempts to bring the nuptials to a bloody and premature conclusion. Wives and fiancées, of course, formed part of the spoils of war, and even today brides stand on the left arm of the groom to enable him to draw his sword in her defence should the occasion arise. Fortunately today such a need seldom, if ever, arises, but links with the past often survive in wedding rituals. In 1976, Alex
Haley (1921-1992) published “Roots: The Saga of an American Family”, a novel based on his family’s history, starting with the story of Kunta Kinte, his presumed ancestor, who was kidnapped in the Gambia in 1767 and transported to Maryland to be sold as a slave. Slaves were forbidden to marry, but despite the prohibition many did so, and in order to make a public, if illegal, declaration of their new status the groom and bride would jump over a broom. In the book Kunta Kinte and his fiancée follow this custom. The popularity of this book has led to a revival of the practice as a wedding custom amongst some African-Americans in order to show solidarity with their ancestors on the plantations. It is viewed as a painful but significant part of the AfricanAmerican heritage. But strangely, the origin of this custom adopted by slaves in the Deep South is doubtful, although it is true that in Ghana brooms are waved above the heads of newlyweds and their parents to signify the start of a new life. It is surprisingly in Wales that the custom appears to have originated (priodas coes ysgub – broom-stick wedding) and may have arrived with the Romanies in 1579. How the tradition got from Wales to Ghana remains a mystery, unless it be at the hands of some Welsh sailor engaged in the pernicious slave trade out of Bristol. As with all traditions, various meanings have come to be associated with this ceremony. In Christianity the handle of the broom has come to represent God, whilst the bristles represent the family. In Pagan rituals, rather more interestingly, the handle represents a phallus, whilst the bristles represent female energy. If adopted, one should be careful how one explains the ritual to great aunt Jemima…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

Kimberley and Lance celebrated their dream wedding surrounded by their closest family and friends. Flight of Destiny Lance and I met through my father. He was a friend of my father’s and, as far as he was concerned, I was off limits. However, this didn’t stop me and, after a night out in the port on holiday in August 2008, I invited him to visit me back in the UK. Less than a month later, Lance came over for a few days to where I was living in Cheshire. He actually missed his original flight, but I knew it was meant to be, so he had to pay 280€ for a later flight that same day. Lance joked that this would be a story to tell our children when they were older. After visiting Lance in Spain in October and November and after only three months of knowing each other, I decided to quit my job and move to Spain so that we could be together.
Under the stars In March 2011 our gorgeous son, Oliver Daniel, was born. We were a growing family, with George, our fabulous English bulldog and several other pets including goldfish and an African Grey parrot. However it felt like I was waiting forever for Lance to pop the question. He took me to London for my 30th birthday so I became really excited that this was going to be the moment. When he didn’t propose, I have to say I was slightly disappointed but he made up for it by getting down on one knee beside the lake at The Mere, in Cheshire, under the stars - the day after my birthday. It was quite funny as I was so shocked that he had finally done it that he actually had to prompt me for an answer. We knew that we would have quite a long engagement as I wanted
to have another baby before the wedding and I wanted to enjoy the planning of the wedding too. In December 2013 Millie Rose was born and she completed our family. Diamantes and sparkle I had always wanted a traditional English wedding, but decided that with a baby on the way, travelling to England and back and trying to organise a wedding abroad wouldn’t be the easiest option. We had always joked that we would get married one day in TikiTano. When we went to have a look at the place – WOW - we just knew it was perfect! Scarlett was extremely professional and explained that she would fit in with our plans and could do as much or as little as we wanted regarding the organisation of our big day. I had originally wanted to get my dress here in Spain as I thought it would be easier with fittings and also whilst trying to lose my baby weight. But not having my mum and bridesmaid here to help me choose was so difficult, so I booked some appointments at three bridal shops in Norwich. After trying on the third dress in the first shop, I knew I’d found ‘The One’! My fittings were completed at Santos y Eva in Marbella. They were also responsible for organising and fitting the men’s suits and I found them very professional and helpful. I struggled with style for the wedding as there is so much choice out there these days. They say every girl dreams about their wedding day and what it will be

like, but actually I had no idea! I’d always loved pink gerberas, so knew that that would be the main focus. The rest I just wanted to be bold and simple, with lots of diamantes and sparkle. Special mention We would just like to offer a special mention to our good friend Andy Anderson who sadly passed away a few days after our wedding. We feel honoured that he was part of our special day and feel sad that we didn’t have the opportunity to thank him for entertaining us alongside Alicia and Leo. May he Rest in Peace. Favourite moment My absolute favourite moment was arriving at the end of the aisle to find Lance. When he turned to me he was totally surprised by the way I looked. He was so emotional and we felt so in love with each other at that moment. If I had to do it again, I would change… I wouldn’t change a thing about the actual day but the stress beforehand was completely unnecessary, as the day was perfect. So if I could do it again I would definitely relax more. My advice to any brides to be is to RELAX and enjoy the run up to your big day and the actual day, as it goes way too fast and you’ll never get it back again!

Fate may have had a hand in kick-starting their romance, but there was no way that Sophie and Tom were leaving anything to chance when planning their wedding. Crete Expectations We love telling people how we met because it’s a story that reveals fate working at its hardest. Nearly eight years ago I spent a summer season working at a bar in the popular tourist spot of Malia, Crete; little did I know that at that same time Tom was also working in the same place. Small world! After leaving a flat I had rented with friends, I soon caught up with them a few weeks later after moving out to find that someone had moved into my spot. “Whose suitcase is this?” I asked. “Oh, that belongs to a guy called Tom Warren”, they replied. We never crossed paths in Malia even though Tom had moved into my room that I rented before and we had the same group of friends. He always tells me that he was a local in the bar I worked but we just never knew of each other’s existence until six months later, back in Leeds when I met up with my Malia friends, only to find Tom with them. We instantly hit it off and the rest, as they say, is history. Foreign Proposal To mark our sixth anniversary, Tom and I set off for Thailand, a special place for us because it was the location of our first holiday; we had backpacked our way around South-East Asia together. On the day of our anniversary Tom whisked me off to our very own five-star villa, overlooking the sea and, complete with an infinity pool, it was a little piece of heaven. On that evening as we sat by the pool beneath the stars, Tom got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. We finished the night with a candlelit dinner, complete with our own pianist and endless champagne. One thing I’ll never forget is Tom telling me that he wanted to make the proposal one I’d never forget and I really won’t ever forget that. Celebrate in Spanish style We didn’t want a traditional English wedding. Instead we were after a laid back celebration in the sunshine and Spain seemed like the perfect place, because we were guaranteed sun and the flight time isn’t too long from the UK. I have spent a lot of my childhood holidaying on the Andalusian coastline so I knew that Spain would be a hard location to beat.

We hadn’t even seen the venue when I booked it but when I saw the images I just knew it was the villa for our big day. Casa Del Rio is set in the small town of Benahavís and you have to drive right up into the mountains and off a dirt track to find it. The whitewashed villa set against the beautiful lush green trees made for the perfect setting. It’s so secluded and when you stay there you can’t quit believe it’s all for you. Vintage values I opted for a vintage wedding with a colour scheme of blush, dusty blue and white. My dress, by Mori Lee, was a sweetheart neckline fishtail that I teamed with a bespoke headpiece and veil, designed by a celebrity milliner in Melbourne, Australia. Just before dinner I switched the veil to a vintage headpiece from a boutique vintage store called Luella’s Boudoir in Wimbledon Village, London. My flowers were absolutely stunning, a mixture of dusty pink avalanche roses, which were woven into the ceremony setting with petals sprinkled down the aisle and flower mason jars. We only invited 50 guests as we wanted an intimate celebration so we had about four rows of 10 to 15 white chairs with lacing on the back, all set up in a curved shape to face the altar. The altar was styled with a white vintage table, overlooked by an arch made out of white lace. The vintage theme inspired all of our décor, which included bird cages for place holders, bird cake toppers, hanging hearts and birds from the trees and bespoke birdcage for the card holder. My bridesmaids all wore the same foot-long blush maxi dress and their hair was styled into a ‘boho bun’ and completed with a flower crown. Music – and the food of love The food was absolutely sensational, right from the canapés to the midnight snacks. After the ceremony we hosted a canapé and cocktail hour, complete with a vintage lemonade bar and during this time we also had a traditional Spanish guitarist. Traditional order, however, was overturned, as we had our first dance before sitting down for dinner. We compiled a jazz
themed playlist for dinner, after which our DJ blasted music from rock n’ roll to contemporary tunes. For the extra entertainment, we surprised our guests with a salsa show just after dessert; two professional dancers took to the stage and performed some high energy salsa. This was a fantastic ice breaker as they also kicked off an audience participation dance when we hit the dance floor after dinner. I have to give special thanks to my wedding planner, Rachel McFadden of Rachel Rose Weddings. Tom and I were living in Australia when we were on the hunt for a Spanish wedding venue and I knew I had to have a planner as I couldn’t organise it all from the other side of the world. Rachel won me over with her amazing style and décor talent and when I had seen her past weddings I just knew I had to have this lady to help me plan my day. Rachel and her team were exceptional, I didn’t worry about a thing and the whole day was just perfect from start to finish. Favourite Moments There are so many but the stand outs were getting ready with my girls, walking down the aisle and meeting Tom’s eyes for the first time, our personal vows and sharing our celebration with our nearest and dearest.
If I had to do it again, I would change… Bringing out the tequila bar so early but that’s really the only thing. I love rustic themes so if we ever renewed our vows I’d stage it in the style of a woodland wedding, teamed with fairy lights.
Advice for future brides getting married in Spain Book taxis in advance. Because our villa was secluded a lot of the local taxi companies didn’t know where we were, so it made it a little difficult when guests were arriving. Research is key, so make
sure you ask loads of questions about the venue and costs before you book and also choose the right time for the ceremony. We hosted ours at 3.30pm which was a perfect time as the sun had crept behind the trees, so guests were shaded.

Barry and Symone chose the most glamorous of Marbella weddings. High School Sweethearts Barry and I met at school when we were just 15 years old and have been together ever since. We were engaged in Barcelona, where Barry popped the question at Castle Montjuic overlooking the city at sunset. He chose that particular spot as he thought it would be quiet and romantic at that time of night. Unfortunately for him it was really busy with tourists and he had to pop the question in front of them all! ‘Wow’ Factor Spanish Wedding We chose Spain as we got engaged there and wanted a wedding that we would always remember. Having the wedding abroad meant that we could have a big family holiday at the same time. We chose Iglesia de la Encarnacion for our ceremony as it had the ‘wow’ factor and we wanted a glam wedding. We visited a number of venues for our reception and originally had our heart set on a villa, but when we saw Finca La Concepcion it blew us away, it was so grand and like nothing we had seen before. I loved the fact that it was very private and that there were no noise restrictions as we love to party!

The themes for the wedding were glamour and elegance. I really wanted to personalise every aspect of our day and give our guests a day they would always remember. Designer Looks I wanted a dress that was dramatic but classy and the Demetrios dress I chose was perfect. I customised it by dropping the waist and reshaping the bust to create a sexier silhouette in the top half of the dress. I wore Badgley Mischka shoes and went for full glam make-up and bouncy hair. My colour scheme for the bridesmaids was white and I chose cocktail dresses for them which I felt worked really well for a Spanish wedding. I bought the dresses online and had the tulle belts made and customised them myself with a diamond brooch. I also bought Indian headpieces which lent an exotic look to the overall outfit. The groom wore a threepiece Kenneth Cole suit in blue and the groomsmen also stuck to that look. My little brothers and cousin stole the show on the day with their outfits: the flower girl’s dress was custom made from a design I had and the page boy looked cute in braces and bow tie.
Personalised Touches My favourite colour is pink so there were a few pink touches including the beautiful pink peony bouquets carried by the bridesmaids, pink ribbons on the ladies’ chairs and pink detail on the menus and tables. The décor at the ceremony was very glam with white candelabra centrepieces, white flower pompoms in the trees, an open-topped canopy marquee with a beautiful big chandelier and lots of crystal details. We had lollipop orders of service which also doubled up as fans to keep our guests cool. Also, there was a ‘Here Comes the Bride’ sign which my little brother carried down the aisle. The table plan had Polaroid selfies of each guest (which I sourced via their Facebook and
Instagram pages) which got a great reaction. The favours were baby pink fans for the ladies, which went down a treat! A Sparkling Celebration Marbella Catering was amazing! We opted for a three-course meal and an open bar in the evening, which guests really appreciated and it was our way of saying thank you. My favourite part of the meal were the Knickerbocker Glory desserts with sparklers. The music on the night was perfect, thanks to DJ Tristan Harper. He was amazing and got everyone on their feet the whole night. Leonardo Puerta also played the saxophone, which added a real upbeat, holiday vibe to the whole evening.
One of my favourite moments from the day was a performance from my papa. He wrote a beautiful song for Barry and I and also surprised everyone with a dance; it was so unexpected but really got the party going. Barry’s dad also sang - he chose ‘Always and Forever’, which was really special. If I had to do it again I would make it to the chapel on time! My dad drove me and got lost and I ended up running through the old town to get to the chapel. My advice for future brides marrying in Spain.. Hire Lisa Franco as your wedding planner and everything else will fall in to place!

Tom and Laura chose Sol Wedding Photography & Film to capture their rustic romance. Rural Charm We chose to get married in Spain as the country has a very special place in our hearts. My parents retired to an olive grove in the Axarquia region and their home is one of our favourite places in the world to unwind and savour each moment at a leisurely pace. Be Wild Tom and I met at a mutual friend’s home as the festivities of the Notting Hill Caribbean Carnival continued outside. It was as though we had known each other for years. We talked all night and haven’t stopped the conversation in the last 10 years. We took each stage of our relationship at a leisurely pace. We moved to Australia after four years of being together and Tom told me he planned to propose a year after settling into Australian life, but it took another year before he spotted the ideal opportunity to pop the question. We got engaged at the end of a beautiful coastal walk just outside Monaco where I used to live when I was young. It was summertime and very hot, even though the sun had started to set. Tom suggested we go for a swim in one of the coves to cool off. I sat on his knee not realising that he was intentionally on one knee as we talked. And then he pulled out the ring and proposed! It was the perfect proposal for us, out in nature and spontaneous. There were only a few other people there. I vaguely remember a woman relaxing on a rock close by with a beaming smile on her face.

Our venue choice was a very considered one. I grew up in Toronto, France, Montreal and the UK and Tom is from the UK; we now live in Sydney, Australia. A destination wedding was definitely on the cards for us because we had family and friends coming from Australia, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Canada and the US. After considering venues in various countries, we had more than enough venues on our favourites list but no firm decision. While visiting my parents in Spain my parents suggested Hotel La Viñuela, a venue close to their home. When we saw the lush beauty of the hotel with that sensational turquoise lake in the background our wedding venue shortlist became irrelevant in an instant. Wind was also a very important consideration for us. The position of Lake Viñuela means that we avoided the winds that you get by the coast that can
make it difficult to hear and feel relaxed in formal wear. Finally, it was important to us that the wedding felt intimate and that meant everything needed to be in one place. Preparation, the ceremony, cocktails, reception and dancing afterwards would all happen in one easy-to-access space where guests would be free to enjoy themselves, but also to pop back to their rooms if they needed to. A Fruitful Affair We didn’t intentionally set out to
have a style other than knowing we wanted everyone to feel relaxed and playful, so we told our guests to wear what they felt comfortable in, whether this was a formal suit with shorts and a hat or a floaty sundress. We love nature and our house is always filled with flowers and brightly coloured fruit and veg from our garden or the local markets, so we added similar splashes of nature’s gifts Spanishstyle. The mothers created piles of oranges, limes, lemons and olive tree branches around the ceremony and reception.

Although at the time it was all a blur, the songs now give me chills every time I hear them because of their significance, from the selection process, mixing the sections we wanted into a single track, practising with Nicky at our home in Sydney and then giving it our best go on our wedding day.
Treasured Moments My aunt was our celebrant and she created a colourful sand ceremony just before we exchanged rings. We wanted to involve more of the family in the ceremony and it was a great opportunity to call our parents up from their seats to help pour some of the sand into the glass vase. Tom’s mother is an artist and she painted a tree on canvas for us, which guests added to with colourful finger inks and a little message. Both our sand
ceremony vase and wedding tree, now framed, are treasured reminders of our special wedding day. One of a Kind We chose Greg from Sol Wedding for our Wedding Film DVD and Pierre Richardson (Sol Wedding) for our bridal photography. Greg is so passionate about what he does, he had plenty of ideas about how to create the DVD and, most importantly, we trusted his skill and his integrity.
The Sweetest Memories My less expected favourite moments amongst the many that I predicted were the speeches - my best friend Nancy surprised me with the sweetest, funniest speech! We also enjoyed the best man speech, which we were expecting might leave Tom cooling down from embarrassment in the kitchen fridge but, to our relief, it was heart warming. We also prepared a funny dance routine with the help of our dance
Marrying in Spain Absolutely - go for it. Make allowances for any questions you have to be answered at countryside rather than big city pace and keep an open mind, because there are so many good things about the region. We had fantastic weather, a beautiful fragrant environment, great food and we were able to add in lots of extra features to our wedding because the region offers better value for better quality compared to other Westernised countries.

Nadia and Nadim brought their families and friends from all over the world for a huge party in the most magical of settings.
Right Time, Right Place It was a real stroke of fate that Nadim and I met each other, since we lived in different countries - me in Russia and he in France. We would never have met if it were not for a New Year’s Eve party in Moscow that we both attended. Nadim was with a childhood friend and I happened to be at the same place with friends, which was most unusual for me as I had always spent New Year’s Eve with my family. It therefore felt like it was meant to be from the start. At exactly twelve midnight Nadim approached me, we got chatting and it carried on from there.
We chose navy blue for all the details, including the dresses of my bridesmaids. I had the idea of placing flowers around their heads and our florist made my dream come true. It looked elegant and romantic. The Power of Love The ceremony was conducted not at the venue’s usual place, but under a beautiful white summer pergola. It looked very romantic. The florist decorated the area with flowers, lots of white materials, elegant chairs and a concertina fan for each guest. Natasha Johnson led the ceremony and it was simple but beautiful – exactly how we wanted it to be. A month before the wedding, Natasha had asked us each separately to write down the meaning of marriage. She read out our definitions during the ceremony, which was a lovely touch. We loved the way Natasha made our ceremony so personal and would recommend her to any brides to be.
Within a year, I moved to Spain to be with Nadim. I was in Prague with my mum celebrating her birthday when Nadim knocked on our hotel door. It was a total surprise to see him standing there. The next morning he proposed, simply and romantically without any tricks or gimmicks. It was one of the happiest days of my life. A Private Oasis Spain was the perfect choice for our wedding; we were living here in Marbella and it gave all of our friends and family an escape from the cold in Russia and elsewhere. We were looking for a venue for about six months but when Nadim brought me to Finca La Conception I was impressed. It had beautiful gardens, huge old trees, and it was super private, so we did not need to worry about neighbours or sound restrictions. Champagne Showers From the start of the planning process, I knew that we needed a buffet rather than a set course menu and, as Nadim is French, he was very specific about the quality of the meat and fish. In terms of a wedding cake, I didn’t want one! I have never eaten a truly 70 CONFETI
delicious wedding cake, I find that they always look beautiful but disappoint on taste. We decided to have lots of different desserts and small cakes so people could enjoy a variety and, instead of cutting a wedding cake, we poured a champagne fountain.
Bold in Blue My dress was by Pronovias and made by the famous Spanish designer, Emanuel Mota. It was exactly how I had dreamed it would be - not too big, comfortable to dance in, handmade and the most delicate shade of ivory.
Shared Memories When we had only just started to plan our wedding day, Nadim and I knew our major priority was to make the day for us and not the way our families wanted to see it. With this in mind, we added lots of personal touches to create a wedding that would be memorable to both my husband and me for years to come. For example, we arrived to the dinner as Pharrell Williams’s ‘Happy’ played in the background, dancing, jumping and bringing everyone to the dance floor as soon as we entered the room. Even my dear parents were on the dance floor until three in the morning! Throughout the evening, our sisters and brothers organised some

surprises - Nadim’s sister read a poem of congratulations and then my brother performed an incredible dance with his wife (they are professional ballroom dancers). Before the first dance I surprised my husband with a slide-show of our love story accompanied by music, which he loved. Picture Perfect We were so lucky to have the talented Owen Farrell to capture
our wedding day on camera. Owen and his team, from start to end, were just perfect; they were professional, easy going and produced photos that were beautiful, but most importantly for us, natural. Not once did we hear ‘look this way’ or ‘smile at the camera’, Owen caught our first moments of being married without us even noticing he was there.
When we received the photos only one month after the wedding day, all our friends started to call us asking for the name of the photographer, everyone was so impressed by the quality of the photos and the unique way in which Owen captured the day. I cannot recommend him highly enough. Love Boat My favourite moments were
firstly the ceremony - there was so much love and I remember looking around and seeing all of our guests smiling back at us, happy in the moment. Secondly, following the wedding, we had a boat day with friends and family. There was a DJ, cocktails, a glittering blue sea and everyone laughed from start to finish. It was the perfect end to our fairytale wedding celebration.

Andy and Helene celebrated their marriage in a vibrant and colourful event, surrounded by their closest family and friends. Caught in the act Andy and I met through mutual friends just before we went to see a gig at the Shepherds Bush Empire. I had a standing ticket downstairs on my own and Andy had an upstairs ticket, but he was so desperate to meet me properly that he jumped down from the balcony! He got caught, was kicked out of the venue and then had to buy another ticket to get back in. He turned up beside me. casual as anything and it wasn’t until a year later that he told me how he had jumped from the balcony. Andy proposed at my mum’s 60th birthday meal in front of our close friends and family. It was quite overwhelming but very romantic. Spontaneous in Love Andy is from New Zealand and I’m from Scotland, but neither of us wanted to get married in the other’s home country. We therefore looked for somewhere on

neutral ground, eventually picking Spain because we love the culture, the food and the guaranteed sunshine (not something you get up in Scotland). We looked for a villa that could accommodate quite a large number of people, as we had guests coming from all over the world. I simply googled “wedding villas in Spain”; the most important thing for us was to find a somewhere with great ambience. I discovered Los Caballos and pretty much booked it the next day. I loved the fact it came with a British wedding planner, as it made the whole process very easy. Gloriously Glamorous Glamour was the overall style of the wedding. I wore a Pronovias Atelier collection gown in a beautiful crepe fabric; I liked the fact that the designer was Spanish. Andy’s suit was tailored Massimo Dutti, so we both wore Spanish brands.
I put my bridesmaids in bright red Lipsy dresses that were bodycon in style and had a big split up the leg; all of them looked amazing and very glam! I tried to use the colours of the Spanish landscape as much as possible, so our wedding colour scheme was bright and vibrant. I didn’t want matching flowers, so I told the florist the colours I wanted - red, coral, peach and pink - rather than specific types, plus I wanted succulents and eucalyptus. An Eye for Detail As the venue was so visually stunning, it didn’t need a lot of additional décor. I asked for the petals of my flowers to be strewn up the aisle and for the table centres to feature big wooden boxes holding my chosen flowers. These looked really amazing and the staff kept moving them around the venue as the party moved location. Aside from that, the wedding planner added some lovely touches, such as a birdcage for the gift cards, a chandelier hanging in the tree above the
ceremony and gorgeous furniture, which she placed around the venue to compliment the overall vibe of the wedding. Food Glorious Food The food was supplied by Sana Catering, who work with the wedding planner. It was superb, the vegetarians amongst our guests said it was the best wedding food they had ever eaten. For mains we chose Seafood Skewers, Honey Chicken and Lamb Cutlets, served with a Thai Noodle Salad, Garden Salad and Mediterranean Potato Salad. For the cake we opted for a real Cheesecake, which we ate as our midnight snack. During the meal, Kiko Madrid performed some music. We found Kiko playing in a restaurant when we came to see the venue initially. He has great energy and plays keyboard and sax. It was lovely to include something we had found ourselves. A Little Magic We selected Christian and Annie as our bridal photographers as we really like the way they pick out little details and small touches
rather than just focusing on group pictures of smiling people. When you are planning a wedding you put so much time into the little touches and it is these small additions that come together to make the whole day so special. Going to so many weddings you see a lot of the same stuff, so if you have something unique or personal, you want that to be represented in your photos and Christian has a wonderful way of capturing objects.

Magic in Paris Tom and I met when we were working together at a special needs school in Cornwall. We became very close friends and only when we had stopped working together did we realise our true feelings for each other. We were together (mostly in London) for four years before he proposed.

Tom surprised me with a trip to Paris. We spent a day walking around and viewing all the sights, including the Eiffel Tower. We walked up the tower and Tom began to feel a little sick from the height and couldn’t continue all the way up. He asked if we could go back later and see the lights with some champagne and we did just that after dinner. He popped the question then, of course! I became very emotional as he explained that it wasn’t just any ring, either; he had actually spent six months designing and making it - panning for the gold and using a christening gift of his from his grandfather to melt for the

I have attended many weddings in the UK and, as lovely as they’ve all been, it just wasn’t us. We wanted a relaxed vibe with the freedom of the outdoors and picturesque views and the unpredictability of the UK weather meant that it wasn’t an option for us. We decided to view four possible venues here in Marbella. All were very lovely but honestly there was only one favourite - Tikitano.

perfect! Once we had confirmed our choice, we had lots of help, advice and support from the staff and it really couldn’t have been easier. Vintage Romance Meets London Style Having chosen an outdoor beach wedding, I wanted to continue with that relaxed and romantic feel. My dress was a Madeline Gardener (Mori Lee) dress which I bought in London. It was so comfortable (backless with a high neck mesh) that, not only could I move and dance, I could also eat! I had heard so many brides say, “It’s the best you will ever feel” and I now completely understand - it’s true. I chose not to have a veil so that I could show off the back of the dress and instead I wore a crystal hair comb.
My maids were wearing pearl pink strapless dresses with a sweetheart neckline to match the style of mine. Although the wedding was relaxed, I still wanted to have a little bit of formality and a traditional wedding feel, so I asked them if they would wear their hair up; a large flower in their hair helped to retain the beach look. I had four flower girls aged between two and four who wore white Grecian style dresses and little headbands. For the flowers I chose cream and pale pink roses, lillies and gypsophila. I kept the bouquets simple with just the ivory roses However, I customised mine with a small amount of fern and crystal pins. The décor reflected a vintage romantic theme. We made a lot of
our decorations including the table plan, the card box and our name tags, which doubled as favours (a thank you card and a donation to a charity). The venue itself was so stunning that we didn’t overdo our design features. For the ceremony we had a bamboo canopy with our chosen flowers, a white carpet and a beautiful string quartet who played Pachelbel’s ‘Canon in D Minor’ as I walked down the aisle. Seeing everyone you love watching you walk towards the man you are spending the rest of your life with is an extremely special moment. We also chose to write our own vows; this was my husband’s request and it took me a while to come round to it, but it just made the whole thing so personal and was definitely one of the highlights. Romantic rose celebration At Tikitano the food was outstanding, so we received only excellent comments. Choosing your wedding meal can be quite tricky, however we kept in mind that it is a long day with lots of drinking, so a good meal is essential. We chose Avocado and Prawns to start, Fillet Steak or Sea Bass as a main and a Pear and Red Wine dessert. We also had a vegetarian option of Goats Cheese Salad to start, followed by a Truffle Sauce Pasta with Tempura Vegetables. Our wedding cake consisted of two tiers - one layer of sponge cake and the other of coffee and walnut. I found the design online and showed it to the cake maker and she was able to make it

exactly as I imagined. It continued the romantic theme and the dusky pink and ivory rose colours. We had a DJ for the first part of the reception and I created the exact playlist, which he was more than happy to play. We had rehearsed a dance routine for our first dance and asked everyone to join in afterwards. Later in the evening, we had the
AMAZING Jackie Brown Band, who had people dancing all night long. We added a few special touches to our wedding such as a cheese tower and crackers as part of the evening snack and later on the beach we had fireworks. We also had a videographer with a drone, who captured the whole essence of the day perfectly. These were things that made the wedding 100 per cent OURS.
Favourite Moments Our best moments definitely have to be saying our own vows in front of our favourite people, the most amazing picturesque views, having a live band and the fireworks on the beach. What Would I Change? Not very much! The weather was perfect, the venue was perfect and the food was outstanding. The hardest part of planning a wedding is working out the timing of everything, as there are only so many hours in a day. We would have perhaps left a longer gap between the ceremony and the reception so that we could have had our photos taken AND seen our guests before having sat down for dinner. Advice For Brides-to-Be Keep it simple! Less is definitely more here, as the views from all of the venues say it all. It is an exciting time and it’s natural that you should want to do everything, but focus on quality and detail rather than quantity. Don’t be afraid of letting the professionals help.

Arne and Hilde celebrated a small intímate celebration in Marbella
My Destiny We met through friends when we were very young and dated for a year when we were respectively 18 and 22 years old. Unfortunately our romance didn’t last but I often thought about Arnie and wondered how he was. I later married and life for me went on. However, things didn’t work out as planned and, after being apart for 20 years, we met again. It was like we had never been apart. After a two year romance we went on holiday to Cinque Terra in Italy. One evening, when we were all dressed up for dinner, Arnie said he wanted us to have a picture taken by the sea. To my surprise he suddenly dropped to his knees and proposed. I was so shocked, but YES was the only answer for me. Small and Intimate I had already been married once, so we wanted this wedding to be a small, special and intimate affair with only our closest family and friends present. We needed a venue that was small enough to be intimate but large enough to accommodate our family and 76 CONFETI
The music for the evening was simple. We asked our guests to provide music lists on their mobile phones to be played while we danced and chatted and enjoyed each other’s company, but for our dance we chose ‘How Long Will I Love You’ by Ellie Goulding. friends. When my husband’s friend suggested that we could borrow this fantastic house in Spain, the decision was easy. It was going to be a family celebration rather than a formal, traditional celebration.
Norwegian Ceremony As this was a small wedding I also wanted the dress to be small and not too fussy. I decided that my bridesmaid should choose what she would most like to wear. I didn’t give
her any instructions, other than I wanted everything to be clean and simple. For the wedding colours I chose white and silver to reflect my dress. We had our ceremony in the Norwegian church in Calahonda. Unlike the family celebrations afterwards, it was a traditional Norwegian ceremony. The priest was fantastic, he made the ceremony so special for us. He even sang some songs. Spanish Tapas As our wedding was in Spain we opted for tapas. This way we could ensure that there would be something for everyone’s taste preferences (allergies, vegetarian, children, etc.). We had a simple and sweet wedding cake shaped as a heart flavoured with chocolate and vanilla.
If I had to do it again, I would change... Maybe my hair - it looked fine but I actually wanted it to be simpler. Advice for future brides getting married in Spain Be specific when ordering and have a trial at the hairdresser to decide how your hair should be.

Last Night a DJ Saved My Life Rob: When I was working as a DJ some years ago I spotted Yvonne in the crowd and struck up a conversation with her at the end of the night. There was instant chemistry and we exchanged numbers but I had to put her in my phone as ‘person x’ because I didn’t know her name! High in the Sky Rob: We were on a return flight from New York to Dublin when I popped the question. Having been away for almost a week and having waited for the right moment, it arrived at 36,000 feet in the air. Yvonne was having a little rest when I decided to type some text on her phone. I then gave her a nudge and said that there was a message on her phone to read. When she unlocked the phone it displayed the magic words, “Will you marry me?”; at least I knew she couldn’t do a runner!

Villa d’Amour Rob and Yvonne: We wanted to do something a little different so we decided on a destination wedding. We set about speaking to various wedding planners via Skype and finally chose Lisa Franco at Bella Weddings in Spain. She was very down to earth and knew exactly what we were after. Having had our final Skype call with Lisa, we organised a trip out to Marbella to look a various wedding venues. We were always in love with the idea of having our wedding in the grounds of a private villa and Villa Africa ticked all the boxes and, incidentally, was the last venue we viewed. It gave us the opportunity to have a picturesque location to which we could add all our own personal touches. Once decorated, the venue had a cool shabby chic/festival vibe. Pure Gold Yvonne: Finding my dress was a complete accident - we were actually out bridesmaid dress shopping when I found the dress for my big day. The thought of wearing a gold leaf gown was something different to the norm so that definitely helped me to make the decision. For the bridesmaids I knew the colours I was after, but aside from that I didn’t really mind what the girls wanted. We ended up choosing the two mint green dresses and then we asked a local dressmaker to make two matching baby pink ones. They were stunning.
Rustic Romance Yvonne: As a wedding theme, we wanted to have a fun festival vibe that was romantic at the same time; for example, in the chill-out area we had hay bales covered in fairy lights. We were very happy with how it looked in the end. The day itself honestly couldn’t have run any smoother…until Rob and the groomsmen all decided to join hands and jump into the swimming pool - in their suits. All in the name of fun I guess!
Best Moments Rob: The highlight for me was seeing my beautiful wife-to-be in her wedding dress as she walked up the aisle. Yvonne: My favourite moment was coming down the stairs to see our little boy Alfie all dressed up and waiting for me. We had the great Owen Farrell to capture all of these special moments. We barely knew he was there and the results speak for themselves; the photos are quite simply amazing.
Recommendations Yvonne: I would advise brides-to-be to spend time choosing a wedding planner; Lisa really was our saving grace. Also, have hair and make-up trials to ease your mind. If you’re thinking of a destination wedding give yourself plenty of time and factor in costs associated with a few trips back and forth. Stay calm and have faith in your wedding planner to carry things off with perfection and ease. Stressing out will not achieve anything. Finally, take ten minutes on your own to take it all in it is your day, after all, so enjoy it.

Rob: In terms of groomswear, I decided I didn’t want anything traditional, since we were going to be in 30 degree heat and I wanted a more modern look. Having looked around on various websites I decided to go for Redherring Suits from Debenhams as they fitted the bill perfectly. We went for slim trousers with scooped waistcoats and a skinny tie along with crisp Jeff Banks white long-sleeved shirts.

Lauren&Will: A Real ROMANCE Lauren and Will don’t claim to be the most romantic people in the world, but that didn’t mean their wedding wasn’t worth celebrating in style.
Short and Sweet Before you rush for the tissues, this part of our story is short, sweet and to the point. For anyone that doesn’t knows Will and me, we are not a very gushy romantic couple, so we will have to skip the love letters and trips to Venice, Paris or Rome. Will and I met when I came to Spain for a holiday. From the moment we first encountered each other conversation flowed and we felt like we had known each other for years. When I returned to the UK we kept in constant contact by email and, in this way, our relationship grew; I moved to Spain the following year. Since I arrived in Spain we have hardly spent a night apart. We
complement each other perfectly - he is the yin to my yang. I bring a bit of South African crazy into his life and he brings accountant calm to mine. In our first year together we increased our family with the addition of Molly. Apart from changing our lives she brought us even closer together. Molly takes after her dad and is sweet-natured, calm and has a beautiful heart. Last year we increased our family again with the addition of Poppy. She is much more like her mother, unpredictable, goofy and a little crazy.
Our greatest wish for the future is to be able to expand our family (with non-fur children this time!) and share our love, happiness and joy as a family unit. Portuguese Proposal As I have said before Will, bless his heart, is not a very romantic sort of guy but he tries his best. He arranged a holiday to Portugal for us and our two ‘fur children’ and we stayed in a beautiful apartment in Vilamoura. We spent a few days sightseeing and evenings just relaxing. On the morning of our anniversary he came to me got down on one
knee and said, “I didn’t get you a card - I got you this instead!” and pulled out the ring. He asked me to marry him and, of course, I said, “Yes”. Spanish Spectacular Our wedding was at the very beautiful Villa Cano, Marbella. From the moment we walked in we knew this was ‘the place’; with beautiful views in every direction, huge, gorgeous gardens and amazing interiors, for us it was perfection. We have both always loved the beautiful Spanish climate and couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate this special occasion. My dress was inspired by the Israeli designer, Inbal Dror. With plunging backs, daring necklines and sleek silhouettes, her work is truly breathtaking and, as low backs are just coming in for this wedding season, her gowns are a must see. My bridesmaids wore mint green and lace floor length dresses; we loved the classic elegance of the cut and shape. As we wanted a garden wedding, we went with shades of green and pink which provided a great look to the day. We had a beautiful selection of white, green and pink flowers all set in a half water filled vase with a pink rose submerged in the water. To add a bit of sparkle, the bottom of the vase was filled with crystals and a submersible tea light, and crystal detail hanging from the vase. Just stunning! Apart from this our décor was very simple - we mainly used our flowers and lots of fairy lights. The Main Event The ceremony itself was lovely. We held it in the garden of the villa and all of the chairs featured flowers tied on with a green sash and, all lined up, looked stunning. Unfortunately

it had rained very heavily the night before so it was interesting, to say the least, walking on the sodden grass in heels - but this just added to the fun really. Once we got there it was perfect and nothing could have ruined that moment. Our general theme was ‘just have fun’, so we decided that a sit-down, three-course meal was a little formal and restrictive, so we decided to go with a seated starter and a buffet main course. The starters consisted of Sesame coated Chicken Skewers with a Spicy Satay Sauce, Prawn Cocktail, Fresh Tomato Soup and Sesame coated Halloumi Skewers with a Spicy Satay Sauce. The mains were quite plain and simple: guests could choose from Lamb On the Spit, Hog Roast,

Mixed Paella and Fresh Roasted Salmon and then select their own combination of salads, rice, potatoes and bread to accompany the meat. Our desserts were Baileys Cheesecake, Chocolate Mousse and Lemon Sorbet and all of these went down very well. Party Night We were especially pleased with our choice of musician. Our very talented friend, Sam Oliver, has the most amazing voice and sings a wide range of songs, suitable for all age groups. He sat down with us before and worked out exactly what we were looking for; everyone raved about him after the wedding. Our wedding favours were very simple - we ordered customised wedding love hearts with our names and the wedding date on the “Just Married” wrappers. These were sealed in a gift box with mint green ribbon and a diamanté belt. Instead of a big cupcake tower we decided on one tier for the traditional cutting of the wedding cake with cupcakes below. The rest of the cupcakes were in individual boxes decorated with the same green ribbon and diamanté belt as the favour boxes. We also created a personalised ‘thank you’ sticker for each box. The theme for the cake and cupcake was very simple - each cupcake had a handmade sugar rose and they tasted amazing!
Favourite moments These are very hard to pin down! Our day was filled with our amazing family and friends who had travelled so far to be there, so every moment was just incredible. If I had to pick one though it would have to be watching my dad walk my sister down the aisle. She got married 12 years ago in a very non-fairy tale wedding but the worst part was my dad was in South Africa so couldn’t give her away. We planned the vow renewal in secret for over a year, so to see both their faces and how much it meant to them, that would have to be my favourite moment. If I had to do it again, I would change... I would get a wedding planner – no contest! It was amazing in every way but I think that, with a professional planner in the driving seat, you are able to relax and enjoy it more. Advice for future brides getting married in Spain Plan well ahead of time! Other than that, know that not everything will go as planned but you are the only one who knows every tiny detail. Don’t sweat the small stuff - enjoy your day. It goes past way too fast.

uente Romano Beach Resort Marbella has experienced some dramatic changes over the past couple of years and now boasts an array of five-star services for guests and Marbella residents to enjoy all year round.
