Society Marbella published and produced by: PUBLISHER Andy Clark
Sorry to come on like Noddy Holder, but it’s that time of year again and, knowing how the people of the Coast like a good party, it’s likely that the invitations have already started to pile up in your inbox. Are you ready? If not, you’re in exactly the right place, because this December we have some great ideas of how you can have the best Christmas yet, from top gift ideas to some of the best places to enjoy a slap up pre or post Christmas lunch or dinner. Want to be as popular as Santa Claus with your family and friends? Here’s where it starts. For some years now, December has been traditionally the time that those two massively popular TV programmes, Strictly Come Dancing and The X Factor crown their winners and, apart from an investigation into the former’s long-lasting and somewhat old-fashioned appeal, our Entertainment spotlight is trained on Little Mix, the 2011 winners of The X Factor. The past few years have seen the four girls work hard to develop their sound, improve their vocal skills and make major inroads into the British, Australian and American markets – they’re even popular in Japan. The release of their latest album, Glory Days, means that Little Mix will be likely to outsell this year’s winner. Not bad for the first group to win the competition! Christmas is supposed to be an exciting time – and it is, if you do it properly – but, as my better half will tell you, it can also be stressful. The SOCIETY team is all about mindfulness at the moment and our relationships expert, Sam Owen, reveals how mindfulness meditation has the power to change the
brain, while the medical experts at Marbella’s HC Clinic explain how this technique can help people overcome the stress and anxiety associated with serious illness. I think that I speak for most of us when I say that the SOCIETY team won’t be completely sorry to see the back of 2016. This year has been a bit of a black spot when it comes to some of our favourite music, sport and movie people. Who would have thought, on New Year’s Day, that by next New Year’s Eve we would have lost Bowie, Prince, Muhammad Ali and Terry Wogan? It’s been a bit of a rout, all told, so we thought that we’d do our bit by remembering some of this year’s losses. KJ Elsdon is even older than me (imagine that!) and she reckons that she has witnessed some huge changes in the way that we listen to music over her lifetime. Can you remember when you had to set your record player to 45 or 33 rpm before listening to a single or album? If so, I’m sure that her article about changes in music technology will bring back some memories, both happy and otherwise. Apart from this we have some great fashion suggestions for the December party scene from the Sisko Akt girls, Padre Peter offers an interesting history of the Christmas tree and Ian Kuah hits the road in the Rolls Royce Dawn. Now, that’s what I’d like to see in my stocking on Christmas morning! HAVE A GREAT CHRISTMAS ALL! Till next time... Andy Clark

Little Mix: Big Achievements by KJ Elsdon One Direction isn’t the only group to have achieved stellar and long-lasting success after appearing on ITV’s talent show, The X Factor. Little Mix, featuring the combined vocal talents of Jesy
12
Nelson, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall, has proved that there will always be a market for a good girl group and the quartet’s success has been such that they have already broken records.

S
imon Cowell and his Syco record label might not enjoy the respect which he may feel is his due, but nobody can deny his talent for putting together groups comprising completely disparate individuals. In 2011 the four girls arrived to audition individually for the eighth series of The X Factor, passed their initial auditions but were eliminated after the first challenge in the ‘bootcamp’ stage. The show’s judges allowed them a second chance when they were placed in two separate ensembles during the group bootcamp process: Edwards and Nelson were asked to join the four-piece Faux Pas while Pinnock and Thirlwall were placed in Orion, a trio. Neither group made it through to the next stage but, in a neat piece of manipulation so typical of the programme, two girls each from Faux Pas and Orion were teamed up to form Rhythmix. Unlike their former groups, Rhythmix did make it through to the finals of the competition, although the name of the group had to be changed because it was challenged by a Brighton children’s charity of the same name. And so Little Mix was born.
success of the Spice Girls, so the race was on to plot a sustainable campaign. Until an album could be released, Little Mix was a commodity used only sparingly. The girls performed their official debut single, ‘Wings’ at T4 on the Beach on July the 1st 2012 and, by the end of August, Harper Collins had managed to rush out the band’s autobiography. Little Mix already had a promising fan base in Australia and in October the girls were sent to charm the radio and TV stations and perform live. This marketing ploy paid off perfectly, as ‘Wings’ made it to Number Two in the Aussie iTunes chart.
It took some time for the girls to find a way to merge their vocals, but they made steady progress throughout the competition, going on to win it and their subsequent ‘winner’s single’, a cover of Damien Rice’s ‘Cannonball’ made it to Number One in the singles charts. So much for the much desired X Factor win; if they wanted to forge a fully-functioning musical career they needed to come up with a longterm plan.
Ultimately the girls’ attempt to woo America came didn’t amount to much success in the singles charts (their highest placed single ‘Black Magic’ only made it to 67 in the Billboard Charts), but DNA managed a very creditable fourth place in the album charts. They were the first girl group to manage that feat since the Pussycat Dolls and they also managed to persuade R&B star, Missy Elliott to collaborate with them on ‘How Ya Doin’?’, the fourth and final single to be released from DNA.
Cowell and his team clearly put more thought, time and effort into Little Mix’s development than they had into some of their previous winners. The long held notion that young girls would not be interested in buying the music or merchandise of a girl band had been blown wide apart by the monumental
By the time the outfit’s first album, DNA, was released in November 2012, Little Mix had built up a solid fan base and it was decided that 2013 would be the year in which Edwards, Nelson, Pinnock and Thirlwell would launch their great American campaign. After signing a contract with American label Columbia Records in January the scene was set for the brutal, bloody (and, most frequently, fruitless) war of attrition which, these days, seems to be the standard modus operandi of any musician or band hoping to ‘crack’ the USA.
With attention focused on their second album, Little Mix seemed keen to move away from a pop sound to a harder edged, R&B sound, something that Jesy Nelson had hinted at: “I personally want to put a lot more dancey stuff in there,” she said. “As in, one of the songs that
13
The Entertainment Charts
comes on in a club that makes you want to dance. Not that David Guetta sound, but more R&B - a bit like Eve and Gwen Stefani’s ‘Let Me Blow Ya Mind’”. The second album is a famously tricky proposition, many artists finding that repeating the popularity and rave reviews of their first album is almost impossible. When Salute was released in November 2013 expectations were high, especially with the focus now being on cracking America. In the end a Number Six chart position was a more than acceptable achievement, as the album charted at Number Four in the UK. It delivered three more successful singles for the girls in the shape of ‘Move’, ‘Little Me’ and ‘Salute’. Selected to provide the official Sport Relief single, the girls also enjoyed success with a cover of Cameo’s ‘Word Up!’. By this time Little Mix had managed to achieve the level of media saturation of which even Simon Cowell could scarcely have dreamed – and all without any effort whatsoever. All it took was Perrie Edwards and Zayn Malik to fall into a romantic relationship. One Direction was now linked with Little Mix and the hysteria powered up another few notches, which tended to
14
be a mixed blessing for both bands. Social media sites almost went into meltdown as the Perrie and Zayn affair took off and millions of teenage girls – and, most likely, a few boys too – followed the couple’s every move. The relationship did appear to be serious, as the pair announced their engagement and started looking at property together before the romance ended in August 2015, by which time Malik had bailed out of One Direction. Get Weird, released in November 2014, was to showcase what the girls described as “a whole new sound” and was described by critics as having a more synthpop sensibility, although some R&B elements still remained. The album spawned a further four singles, ‘Black Magic’, ‘Love Me Like You’, ‘Secret Love Song’ and ‘Hair’. By the time of its release it was Jesy Nelson’s turn to feel the full focus of the UK press’s focus on her as she was linked with Jake Roche, former soap star and lead singer of Rixton, another UK boy band, but probably best known as the son of TV stars Shane Richie and Coleen Nolan. The pair’s relationship followed a similar pattern to that of Edwards and Malik, announcing their engagement before parting company amid speculation even more heated than that which greeted the early news of their relationship.
WE ARE WHO WE ARE, P R E T T Y IS JU S T A B I G WOR D A N D I ’ M G O N N A S HIN E L IK E A S TA R , C OZ I’ M T HE O N LY M E IN T HIS WO R LD. . . This has been another busy year for Little Mix, embarking on a massive, 60 date tour across Europe, Australia and Asia to promote Get Weird before announcing in June that they would be releasing new music by the end of 2016. Glory Days, released in November was preceded by a single, ‘Shout Out to My Ex’ which gave the girls their fourth UK Number One and was described by music critics as “a kiss-off anthem at its finest”. Four albums isn’t a bad tally for an artificially created girl group, created in the chaos of a TV talent show. Nobody could criticise the girls for announcing that they were stepping off the treadmill for a while to take stock of their lives. It is probably as much to their surprise as ours, that this female quartet has become such a tightknit unit. It looks as though the theory that X Factor runners-up inevitably fare better than winners has finally been proved wrong.

by KJ Elsdon Have you had a good year? We really hope so, because it has been a truly horrendous year for celebrity deaths. Setting out his stall in early January, the Grim Reaper soon let us know that he wasn’t taking any prisoners and we lost some of our best loved stars in 2016. If, like me, you’re still struggling to process the loss of some of these towering figures, this all too brief guide will hopefully remind you of who – and what - we have said goodbye to over the past year.
Music LEONARD COHEN Quite rightly regarded as at least Bob Dylan’s equal, this extraordinarily talented poet, novelist and songwriter produced an impressive body of work and released an album, You Want It Darker, only weeks before his death in November. In his own quiet, understated way, he was also quite capable of reinventing himself, 1988’s I’m Your Man shocking purists with its synthesizers and dance beats. Of course, they came round to this new sound in time and Cohen cleverly gathered a new generation of adherents. A brilliant lyricist, some of his songs have been included in major poetry collections such as the Norton Anthology of Poetry.
PRINCE The famously tiny Purple One nonetheless had a ginormous talent for writing wonderful songs and, when on form, was a peerless live performer. If ‘Purple Rain’ and ‘When Doves Cry’ didn’t form part of the soundtrack to your 1980s then you’re either tone deaf, spent the decade in a Buddhist monastery in Ladakh or are a practised liar. It is anticipated that his HITnRUN Phase One and Phase Two albums, released in 2015, won’t be the last that we’ll hear of Prince Rogers Nelson since, like Bowie, he left behind a large amount of unreleased material.

DAVID BOWIE The world of popular music will never be quite the same, now that we have lost our Starman. Blurring the boundaries of gender long before dear old Boy George came along, Bowie’s brilliant songwriting talent and ability to reinvent himself meant that he really was a man for all seasons. From Ziggy Stardust and the Thin White Duke through the Britpop Bowie of Earthling to Dark Star and Lazarus, there was a Bowie for all of us. Will we miss him? Only like a fish misses water.
In 2016 we also lost, among others, Sir George Martin, Keith Emerson, Prince Buster, Colin Vearncombe, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Dale Griffin, Henry McCullough, Dave Swarbrick, Tom Searle, Matt Roberts, Billy Paul, Bernie Worrell, Guy Clark, John Berry, Papa Wemba, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, John Chilton, Phife Dawg, Bobby Vee, Pete Burns, Glenn Frey, Merle Haggard, Vanity, Clarence Reid, Jimmy Bain, Scotty Moore, Paul Bley, Mose Allison, Sharon Jones, Marni Nixon, Pierre Boulez, Paul Kantner, Johnny Murphy, Lee Andrews, Dan Hicks, Signe Tole Anderson, Sir Neville Marriner, Rod Temperton, Frank Sinatra Jr., Leandro ‘Gato’ Barbieri and Jeremy Steig.

Sport MUHAMMAD ALI
ARNOLD PALMER
What can we say about the artist formerly known as Cassius Clay that hasn’t already been said? Ali coupled overwhelming physical beauty and strength with a prodigious talent and he honestly did float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. An opinionated and eloquent individual with a mouth even faster than his fists, he was an interviewer’s dream and his one-liners and seemingly ad hoc poetry ensured that the world would remember Ali. “I’m so fast,” he once claimed, “that I can turn the light off and be in bed before the bulb goes out.” Too true! Let’s remember him at his best in the ring, when he took on Sonny Liston, who was then considered unbeatable, and gave him a lesson in boxing. “I’m going to put that ugly bear on the floor,” he had boasted, “and after the fight I’m gonna build myself a pretty home and use him as a bearskin rug. Liston even smells like a bear. I’m gonna give him to the local zoo after I whip him.” And, figuratively at least, he did.
Golf’s Mister Nice Guy is another titan lost in 2016 whose achievements will define his sport for many years to come. Experts reckon that Palmer was most assuredly not the prettiest exponent of golf, but his skill is undeniable. At his peak, he stood head and shoulders above his rivals, his temperament meaning that he easily kept his calm when, all about him, other players were losing theirs. Competing at a tournament in Fort Worth in 1962, Palmer pulled back from taking a shot when a small boy started talking nearby. Embarrassed, his mother apologised profusely. “It’s not that important!” Palmer assured her. American sports journalist, Dan Jenkins summed it up best when he said, “For a few years we absolutely forgot that anyone else played the game.”
In 2016 we also lost, among others, Johan Cruyff, Mel Charles, Denys Smith, Leo Harrison, Roddy Evans, Enzo Maiorca, Carlos Alberto, Anthony Foley, David Herd, Tony Mottram, Dickie Jeeps, Max Walker, Ken Higgs, Hannes Arch, Frans ten Bos, Nina Ponomaryova, Bernard ‘Midget’ Farrelly, Dailian Atkinson, Bobbie Heine Miller, Hanif Mohammad, Dai Dower, Donald Carr, Geordie Howe, Viktor Korchnoi, Roger Millward, Christy O’Connor Sr., John Warr, Mike Salmon, Mick Sullivan, Cesare Maldini and John ‘Brummie’ Stokes.
Literature SIR ARNOLD WESKER Born in Stepney, London in 1932 Wesker was probably best known as one of the generation of writers dubbed the ‘angry young men’ of British theatre who specialised in the kitchen sink drama. One of Wesker’s most successful plays, The Kitchen which was also made into a film, actually featured a kitchen and was based on his experiences of working in the Bell Hotel in Norwich. His trilogy of plays about the British-Jewish experience, Chicken Soup With Barley, Roots and I’m Talking About Jerusalem, written in the late 1950s and early 1960s, was later followed by a 2005 novel, Honey (Wesker’s first foray into the genre) which related the experiences of the plays’ central heroine, Beatie Bryant. Wesker’s left-leaning political views were apparent throughout his life and in much of his work; he supported the ideals of feminism long before it was thought fashionable – or even desirable – for men to do so.

UMBERTO ECO Probably best known for his novel The Name of the Rose (Il Nome Della Rosa), which was made into a very successful film, Eco was also a major figure in the world of academia. Most famously he was President of the Graduate School for the Study of Humanities at the University of Bologna, later Professor Emeritus and his presence drew students from around the world. Although his most notable achievement is the development of the literary theory, interpretative semiotics, Eco’s irrepressible sense of fun meant that he was more than capable of producing crowd-pleasing novels like The Name of the Rose and Foucault’s Pendulum and he even wrote several children’s books. Eco proved that it was possible to be humorously serious.
In 2016 we also lost, among others, Harper Lee, Dario Fo, Edward Albee, Michael Herr, Elie Wiesel, Anita Brookner, William Trevor, Margaret Forster, Michel Tournier, Yüko Tsushima, Pat Conroy, Imre Kertész, Lars Gustafsson, Louise Rennison, E.M. Nathanson, Sir Peter Shaffer, Adam Small, Sir Geoffrey Hill, Yves Bonnefoy, Péter Esterházy, Carlos Gorostiza, Michel Butor, Isidore Okpewho and Cyril C. Perera.

Gate). While the former film rocketed him to a guaranteed place in film history (the Russian roulette sequence has been frequently copied and even parodied in advertisements, but never bettered), the latter became a watchword for directorial excess and, following its release and critical lambasting in 1980, Cimino refused to give an interview for 10 years. Subsequent movies, which included Year of the Dragon and Desperate Hours failed to rescue his reputation, but The Deer Hunter will remain a classic of 20th century American cinema.
MICHAEL CIMINO Probably more than anyone else in the history of American cinema, Cimino experienced its extreme highs (The Deer Hunter) and devastating lows (Heaven’s
GENE WILDER Not many screen actors inspire the kind of genuine affection that Gene Wilder did. He enjoyed three highly successful collaborations during his career, the first with Mel Brooks on comedy classics like The Producers, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. His second partnership with stand-up comedian Richard Pryor produced a further three comedy classics in Silver Streak, Stir Crazy and the splendidly silly See No Evil, Hear No Evil. He also formed a
solid partnership on a personal and professional level with his second wife, Gilda Radner with whom he starred in Hanky Panky and Haunted Honeymoon. However, many movie fans will argue that his finest hour was the role of Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, which showcased his eccentric charm. Wilder was also a talented writer and co-wrote many of his film projects.
In 2016 we also lost, among others, Margulies, Dan Haggerty, Ettore Scola, Sheila Sim, Frank Finlay,Robert Andrzej Zulawski,David Jim Alan Rickman, Stigwood, Clark, Tony Burton, George Kennedy, Alice Arlen, Ken Adam, Adrienne Corri, Ken Howard, Patty Duke, Guy Hamilton, Abel Fernandez, Burt Kwouk, Giuseppe Ferrara, Bud Spencer, Garry Marshall, Kenny Baker, Alexis Arquette, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Andrzej Wajda and Robert Vaughan.
Popular Culture VICTORIA WOOD Since Wood, a famously private woman, had kept the news of her final illness a secret, the first reports of her death were greeted with disbelief. In the opinion of many viewers of British TV, she was quite simply the funniest woman who ever lived. From the earliest days of her low budget sketch shows with her long-term comedy partner and best friend Julie Walters, to the much larger scope of the musical, That Day We Sang, her last major TV project, Wood defined UK comedy. Although she also acted, she will inevitably be remembered more for her superb comedy writing which, while being specific and entirely faithful to the humour found in the north of England, somehow managed to transcend
boundaries due to her focus on producing character driven work. DAVID GEST Often accused of making a little go a very long way, David Gest, while eternally most famous as Liza Minnelli’s ex-husband, somehow managed to extricate himself from one of the most bruising divorces in showbiz history to become a popular media figure. The renaissance of his reputation was sealed after his appearance in the 2006 series of I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! During his time in the jungle Gest won British fans through his eccentric personality and, two days after returning to Britain, earned a standing ovation at the Royal Variety Show.
Probably best known for his friendship with Michael Jackson and family and his ability to drop names like breeze blocks, Gest was a true one-off who won many friends in his adopted hometown of York, where he requested his ashes be scattered. Considering the hostile press he received over his divorce from Minnelli, news of his death was greeted with genuine sorrow. In 2016 we also lost, among others, Ronnie Corbett, Sir Terry Wogan, Jimmy Young, Caroline Aherne, Frank Kelly, Garry Shandling, Gareth Thomas, Paul Daniels, Howard Marks, Carla Lane, Jean Alexander, Ken Barrie, Tony Warren, Reg Grundy, Doris Roberts, Ed ‘Stewpot’ Stewart and Dave Cash.

A
s the British band Keane so presciently observed, everything’s changing and nothing seems to be developing faster than music technology. For enthusiasts of popular culture, the way that we consume our favourite artists and bands has to be our most important leisure consideration and although we may feel that we have reached maximum velocity, history teaches us that, most likely, we haven’t. My grandfather, who was born in 1908, always liked to boast that he had seen the most dramatic advances during his lifetime. Considering that he had been around long enough to witness the earliest use of aeroplanes in combat, watched the Apollo XI moon landing on his black and white TV and, as I ‘helped’ him in his vegetable garden, heard the sonic boom of Concorde as it flew over our part of West Wales, that was a reasonable claim. Yet, when I think back over my lengthy term as an obsessive fan of popular music, I feel that I have also lived through a remarkable period of advancement. As a late baby boomer, my first encounter with recorded music was courtesy of my parents’ collection of vinyl and their Dansette record player. For younger readers I should explain that, at this point, vinyl records were available in single and album form and had to be played at different speeds (45 revolutions per minute for singles and 33 rpm for albums), so record players contained a switch that you had to direct to the correct speed. If, like me, you were perpetually forgetful and distrait, this was inevitably going to result in some very strange sounds, but it all added to my musical education. Throughout the 1960s, the closest I managed to get to the iPod experience was to pile up a stack of my favourite singles on the Dansette’s extending central spindle and wait for each to flop onto the turntable. This would inevitably end in disaster, as some blip in the design would cause two, or sometimes three, singles to descend at once, meaning that my playlist was scuppered. By the time I was a teenager, I had turned my

My first serious foray into the world of 33 rpm (The Monkees’ eponymous first album) might have been a collection of singles, but soon bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis and Emerson, Lake & Palmer were proving that there was more to popular music than three minute songs. However, progressive rock, as it was known, was still restrained by vinyl’s two-faced restrictions and even the most daring musical experiment was curbed by having to fit the music into two sides of roughly 25 minutes each. Some of the more ambitious (some would say pretentious) experiments resulted in more double and even triple albums being pressed. If the ‘prog’ bands had managed to outlast the vagaries of punk, they would have been delighted by the emergence of digital compact disc technology in the late 1970s. Even before this, the popularity of the Sony Walkman, which allowed listeners to enjoy music on double-sided audiotape, had changed the way that people experienced music. These tape players were small (the more expensive models were barely bigger than the tapes themselves) and a set of headphones allowed consumers to listen to their choice of music without
disturbing the people around them. Perhaps this was the most important revolution of them all. The days of a group of people sitting round a record player – or hi-fi system – while communally enjoying a chosen album were over and the era of ‘my music’ was born.
The Entertainment Charts
The old concept of the album still had a few years to run, however, and the supremacy of the compact disc meant that bands were freed from the old tyranny of having to split their albums between two sides of vinyl. The CD (maximum capacity approximately 80 minutes of music) did mean that consumers generally expected more for their money, as they worked towards replacing their old record collections with brand new ‘remastered’ digital copies. The average running time of an analogue album was less than 45 minutes, but digital albums soon started to overtake that figure and, as increasing numbers of music lovers kitted themselves out with CD players, new recordings started edging up towards the hour mark. At this point, technology experts tried to predict what would be the next big thing. Great things were predicted for the MiniDisc, a smaller version of the compact disc and DAT (Digital Audio Tape) but, in the end, these musical media were overtaken by the development of the mp3 player, which enabled listeners to save thousands of songs on one device.
Its extreme portability meant that the concept of ‘my music’, first enabled by the Sony Walkman, became even more prevalent. Fans of tech design were immediately seduced by the clean lines and large memory of Apple’s iPod, which quickly became the sine qua non of mp3 players. The rise of the PC and the internet meant that almost every home was capable of harnessing the power of the iPod; all the music fan had to do was to download all the tracks he or she wanted via the relevant music site (Apple’s iTunes was one of the most successful) and listen away. This had its more controversial side, as file sharing sites such as Napster fought hard legal battles Of course, this situation has had repercussions for the traditional album. Although artists and bands still release their work via this format, the rise of the iPod and its cheaper cousins meant that people tended to download their music on a track-by-track basis, leaving only the hardcore fans to buy a whole album. Whereas in the past the real money was in album production, many artists and bands have discovered that they now need to develop a more rigorous approach to touring in order to make a living. A recording contract is no longer the licence to print money that it once was.The rise of the smartphone, which allows users to buy huge amounts of memory for their devices and therefore gives them the leeway to store their music collections, has knocked sales of the iPod just as it has boosted sales of the iPhone and its close relatives. It is also a good
way to tune into your favourite music in yet another digital incarnation, the streaming service. At the moment of writing Spotify, the first company in this field to emerge in 2008, is still the king with approximately 40 million paying customers worldwide, although rivals like Tidal, Google Play Music, Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited and Deezer are also popular. Listeners pay a small monthly subscription to gain access to a huge variety of international artists and can then save favourite albums into one place and construct their own playlists, either on their own or in collaboration with other users. The parallel development of devices like Chromecast, Sonos and Amazon’s Echo system means that it is now possible to harness a streaming service to access music throughout the house. It is likely that the next era will make music even more accessible. As Forbes Magazine points out, the first generation iPod could store 1,000 songs, while the latest model can store more than 40,000. With Echo, Chromecast and Sonos compatible speakers, music fanatics can enjoy all the music they can handle in every room in their homes. After a long period of ‘my music’, which was defined by the Walkman, the personal CD player and the iPod, could we be re-entering an era of communal music? If so, the wheel of music technology will have turned 360 degrees.
This format had first been developed in 1987 by a German company called FraunhoferGesellschaft, but it wasn’t until 1997 that the first functioning mp3 player was created.

Celebrity Bottle Celebrity-backed alcohol brands add a dash of fame to your favourite tipple.
We have become accustomed to celebrities launching perfume and toiletries for both females and males, lending their name to clothing brands and the occasional food product, but the latest trend in celebrity branding comes in alcoholic form as top A-listers in the music and acting communities rush to lend their name to brands that they hope will make them money and appeal to their fans. US business magazine Fortune, describes this new marketing strategy: “These deals generate great benefits for both celebrities and liquor brands. The brands can boost sales by associating with a well-known actor, or rapper, benefiting from free press when those celebrities go on talk shows, or promote their brands to millions of fans on Twitter and other social media platforms. Celebrities enjoy the benefits of associating with a category that denotes luxury.” What does the consumer get from buying these brands? “The endorsement by a celebrity really gives consumers the feeling that they can partake in the kind of lifestyle they assume these celebrities are living,” said Michael Stone, CEO of licensing agency Beanstalk. So, which celebrity brand might you choose if you wanted to feel closer to a life of fame and fortune?

BRANDS Tequila is a flexible drink and it seems to say you’re a stylish rebel who likes to be an individual. It’s great in a Margarita and the Tequila Slammer is legendary, whichever way you drink it. Some call it a Slammer when you drink a shot of tequila with salt and lime, but there is also the version that is a mixture of tequila and a carbonated drink. Ginger ale is highly recommended, but if you really want to feel the full-on effects of this style of Slammer – ditch the ginger ale and use champagne or cava. Probably best to put bed or sofa in your diary for the next day though!

Vodka’s popularity never seems to wane. It’s appearance as the drink of choice for numerous characters in films, not to mention the substantial budgets that the main brands put behind their products, may have something to do with this. It is a drink that also benefits from having highend brands such as Belvedere and Grey Goose that have attracted a younger generation of aspirational drinkers.
There are so many ways to drink vodka, from cocktails to icy-cold shots and the old favourite – a VAT, as Arthur Daley memorably named a vodka and tonic when he popped into the Winchester Club.

Whiskey or bourbon are serious spirits with a distinctly male image that can be drunk in both traditional and modern ways. Drink it straight or with a dash of water for that gentleman’s club feel. Mix it with lemon and lime juice for a Whiskey Sour, or with green ginger wine for a Whiskey Mac. Go retro and “Mad Men” with an Old Fashioned, which blends water, sugar syrup, bitters and a twist of citrus with bourbon or aim for something a bit “Gone with the Wind” and make a Mint Julep that blends, water, sugar, mint leaves, crushed ice and bourbon.

There isn’t much to say about ways to drink wine, although pouring it into a glass first is undoubtedly a more sophisticated look. With many of the celebrity endorsed or part-owned, and in the case of the Jolie-Pitt brand, produced on your own estate in France, the preference is for Californian wines. Following this year’s news of the Jolie-Pitt break up, we can only wait and wonder who is going to claim the Miravel Rosé, which is ranked within the Top 100 Wines and the only rosé to make the cut.
Celebrity wine brands:
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt: Miravel Rosé Drew Barrymore: Barrymore Pinot Grigio Cognac, liqueurs and other spirits Cognac deserves to be drunk neat. Its warmth and digestive properties are well known and it is the drink of choice to end an evening. However, cognac can also be the perfect base for a mean cocktail. A classic Sidecar mixes cognac with Cointreau and lemon juice for a refreshing beverage, whilst the Brandy Alexander that blends the alcohol with crème de cacao and fresh cream is pure indulgence.
Dave Matthews: Dreaming Tree Wines Carlos Santana: DVX Wine Over this festive season when we all enjoy getting to together with friends and family to celebrate, please remember to drink responsibly and leave any driving to those who haven’t had a drink. Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone!
Spirits such as Japanese sake and absinthe are also growing in popularity as the basis of longer drinks, so why not try Sake and Tonic instead of a G&T. Absinthe is an historic drink with a pretty colourful reputation. Drinking it neat as a shot is one option, but many prefer it in a cocktail. Death in the Afternoon is a concoction of absinthe and champagne; it was a drink loved by Ernest Hemingway and named after one of his books. Or, what about The Chrysanthemum from the Savoy Cocktail Book? This mixes absinthe with dry vermouth and Benedictine. Cream liqueurs definitely have a female drinker who loves Baileys in mind and Qream from hip hop star Pharrell Williams is also lactose-free! Drink it neat or over crushed ice with mango juice in a highball glass.

t’s nearly Christmas time and what sums the season up better than mistletoe, mince pies, mulled wine, a few parties and the final of Strictly Come Dancing? Since its first season way back in 2004, this broadcasting behemoth has kept us all entertained through the autumn months, as random celebrities throw themselves into learning the basics of Latin and ballroom dancing - and try desperately not to make prize chumps of themselves.
by KJ Elsdon After unsuccessfully pitching an idea of an updated and revitalised dance competition along the lines of the old stalwart, Come Dancing, Hopkins was put together with Fenia Vardanis, who had also suggested reviving Come Dancing, by Jane Lush, who was then Head of BBC Entertainment. At this point Hopkins also called in Karen Smith, who had been involved with BBC’s Operación Triunfo lookalike, Fame Academy and the trio put together the version of Strictly Come Dancing that we know today.
woman, soap star, young athlete, retired sports star, TV presenter and comedy fodder and a few wild cards depending on who is available that year. All are hopefully sufficiently well known to at least one section of the audience to maintain the impressive viewing figures. As the future of X Factor, ITV’s rival talent contest, looks increasingly bleak, there seems to be no diminution of appetite for the BBC’s little dance show.
The format is basic in the extreme; each A marriage of the old BBC dance celebrity is paired with a professional programme, Come Dancing and the dancer and is expected to learn and The programme has effortlessly managed popular 1992 Baz Luhrmann feature film, perform a different ballroom or Latin dance to tune into the public appetite for the Strictly Ballroom, Strictly, as it is affectionately every week. healthy viewing figures, the tabloid press is also responsible for helping to create a buzz. Since the first series, in which professional dancer, Brendan Cole’s steamy dance moves with Natasha Kaplinsky were rumoured to have ended his romance with fellow pro, Camilla Dallerup, the red tops have been obsessed with the so-called Curse Of Strictly. This has not entirely been without foundation, as the schedule of time consuming rehearsals has seen more than a few long-term relationships buckle under the strain. Pro Flavia Cacace, who appeared in series four to 10, parted company with her personal (and professional) partner, Vincent Simone, to date series five celebrity competitor, Matt Di Angelo before ditching him to marry Jimi Mistry, her partner in series eight. Kristina Rihanoff’s romantic moves with her celebrities (she reportedly ended boxer Joe Calzaghe’s relationship with his girlfriend in series seven before having a child with married rugby player Ben Cohen, her partner in series 11,were said to have resulted in an official warning from management before she resigned last year. No series of Strictly would be complete without a great deal of speculation about which pairing is as frosty as a December morning and which is on the cusp of ending a marriage. Apart from the sequins, the revealing costumes (too revealing, say some armchair critics) and the febrile gossip, one of the reasons many fans claim that they tune in every week is for the
comedy factor. For many years it has been the responsibility of some poor celebrity to provide the laughs. While some, like astrologer Russell Grant, have gleefully embraced it and won a whole new legion of fans, others have seemed entirely oblivious to the disciplines of posture, rhythm and footwork but nonetheless win enough votes to ensure they return until relatively late in the competition. TV journalist John Sergeant, one of the most catastrophically inept celebrity participants, felt compelled to withdraw from the competition after the British public stubbornly continued to vote for him at the expense of some of the other, far better dancers. This year it is former Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls’s turn to fill in as the resident pantomime horse although, like John Sergeant, Judy Murray and veteran Tory politician Ann Widdecombe before him, he is unlikely to win the competition.
As Christmas approaches and the party season starts, the culmination of the latest season of Strictly Come Dancing inevitably means that Saturday night social gatherings will be held in front of the TV. Whoever lifts the programme’s glitterball trophy this year can at least congratulate themselves on ensuring that the BBC’s flagship light entertainment programme is safe for yet another year. It seems that the simple, yet appealing format has the legs at least to see out the decade.
Strictly Facts & Figures Only two professional dancers have appeared in every series of Strictly, Brendan Cole and Anton Du Beke. The programme has been exported to more than 40 countries and is especially popular in the USA where it is called Dancing With The Stars. This, despite Richard Hopkins being told that it would never work in America because it was “too British”. Judge Bruno Tonioli was once a jobbing dancer and can be seen in the video for Elton John’s 1980s hit, ‘I’m Still Standing’. Best known for his acid put-downs, judge Craig Revel Horwood is also a highly successful West End choreographer. Series 12 winner, Caroline Flack is the most successful Strictly contestant of all time, earning a whopping four perfect scores on her path to the trophy. The worst contestant of all time is TV motoring journalist Quentin Willson who earned an embarrassing eight for his ChaCha-Cha with partner, Hazel Newberry. On average each dance lasts for 90 seconds. The Waltz, Cha-Cha-Cha, Quickstep, Rumba, Tango, Jive, Foxtrot, Paso Doble and Samba have featured in the show since the first series. The American Smooth and Viennese Waltz were added in the third series. The Salsa and Argentine Tango were added in Series four, while the Charleston was only introduced late into series seven. At 74 when he entered the competition, children’s TV presenter, Johnny Ball is the oldest contestant. His daughter Zoe, who was a celebrity participant in series three, now presents the BBC2 spin-off show, It Takes Two. Actress Louisa Lytton, who was only 17 years old when she joined series four, is still the youngest ever contestant.

HOW Changes The Brain It would appear that all those spiritual people you may have looked at with suspicion or arrogance may have been much wiser than we thought all along. It’s easy for people to mock that which they don’t understand but there are now tangible, science-backed reasons for the peaceful presence of those “hippy types” that meditate frequently! If, like many, you’re not even sure what meditation is, here is a good definition I found on The Buddhist Centre’s website: “Meditation is a means of transforming the mind. Buddhist meditation practices are techniques that encourage and develop
concentration, clarity, emotional positivity, and a calm seeing of the true nature of things. With regular work and patience these nourishing, focused states of mind can deepen into profoundly peaceful and energised states of mind. Such experiences can have a transformative effect and can lead to a new understanding of life.” I love the reference to “concentration, clarity, emotional positivity, and a calm seeing of the true nature of things” for this is something many people lack when they are experiencing stress and anxiety in this fast-paced, informationoverloaded world we traverse daily. Well, according to research published in Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging by Hölzel at al. (2011), meditation physically changes the brain in ways that will help us to achieve the above, on a general basis, even when we’re not meditating. We’ve known for some time that the brain wires and rewires itself throughout our lifetime based on the things that we habitually think, do and feel. What
Participants spent, on average, 27 minutes a day practicing mindfulness exercises. Whilst self-reporting in questionnaires indicated significant improvements compared with their answers given prior to beginning, their brains also showed significant changes. The researchers found increases in grey matter within the left hippocampus, the posterior cingulate cortex, the temporoparietal junction, and the cerebellum in the meditation group compared with the control group. The authors write: “The results suggest that participation in MBSR is associated with changes in grey matter concentration in brain regions involved in learning and memory processes, emotion regulation, self-referential processing, and perspective taking.” Moreover, in a previous study by Hölzel et al., 2009, the researchers also noted a correlation between self-reports of reduction in stress and decreased grey matter in the amygdala, the brain region known to play an important role in stress and anxiety. Wow! That’s a lot of brain change as a result of how it’s trained! Here are three important reflections: • If we struggle to regulate our emotions about matters big and small, we make life very stressful and difficult for ourselves (and our loved ones).
this research demonstrated was that when meditation novices were asked to use one of the most widely used mindfulness training programmes, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), for eight weeks, physical changes took place within the brain.

• Our perception of events dictates our actions and thus the outcomes we get. If we struggle to learn from life challenges, because the brain structures associated with it are not working at an optimum level, or because we have eroded them over time with lots of negative thinking, then we will keep hitting the same roadblocks time and time again which

What each of us is essentially doing is either wiring/training our brain to frequently be in “panic mode” or frequently be in “calm mode”. The former can happen because we have repeatedly taught our brain to perceive even everyday matters as “threatening events” and so the brain and body prepares us for this by inducing the fight-or-flight response. This is very damaging for our mental and physical health and wellbeing. The “calm mode” is dominant when, like the participants in the study who practised mindfulness meditation daily for eight weeks, we have repeatedly taught our brain to perceive most life challenges as non-stressful events. How are you wiring your brain and are you doing it mindfully? So are you indulging a daily habit of being in “panic mode” even if you think it is justified? Do you notice that you seem to
be a lot more stressed and anxious about things than most people you know that have a similar lifestyle? Do you feel that your resilience to stressful or “stressful” events is declining? As noted by the researchers, by practising meditation, i.e. by practising being calm, mentally quiet and nonjudgemental for about half an hour a day, you could increase the grey matter in your brain in the areas associated with learning, memory, self-awareness, compassion and introspection and decrease the grey matter in your brain in the areas associated with the stress response. What difference would it make to your life if you felt mostly calm, clear, focused and positive? What goals might you achieve as a result? Which current problems you’re facing would you love to resolve? Do you think you would resolve these problems quickly and easily by being calmer, clearer, more focused and more emotionally positive? What difference would it make to your wellbeing and day-to-day existence if you were mostly calm rather than mainly stressed or anxious? What difference would it make to your self-esteem if you experienced yourself on a daily basis as someone who is calm, optimistic and a great problem-solver?
By practising meditation, you could increase the grey matter in your brain in the areas associated with learning, memory, self-awareness, compassion and introspection and decrease the grey matter in your brain in the areas associated with the stress response.
Be specific in what you want to achieve and write a specific date down for achieving each one by. Practise mindfulness meditation each day. (Start with 5-10 minutes if easier and work up to 30 minutes a day.) Note how your wellbeing, emotions and clarity change by rating your stress levels before and four weeks after and eight weeks after starting daily meditation. Using a scale of 1-10, if 1 is so stressed it is consuming me and exhausting me, write down how calm you feel, on the whole, day to day. Using a scale of 1-10, if 1 is I am massively struggling to handle life’s stresses, write down how resilient you feel, on the whole, day to day. Using a scale of 1-10, if 1 is I feel massively confused and foggy most of the time, write down how clear you feel, on the whole, day to day. Every week, write a self-report of how things are improving in terms of (a) achieving your written goals and (b) how you feel day-today, making a note of the small changes as well as the big. You may find it takes a few weeks for you to experience noticeable positive changes.

mproving quality of life should be the first concern when treating patients. We are also aware that many illnesses considerably diminish it. Therefore, it’s necessary to help reduce, relieve or cope with the symptoms that can appear in cancer patients or other seriously ill people. For this we can turn to complementary therapies, which can also help to treat infertility. Do we really know what complementary therapies are? Complementary therapies are a series of practices and products that are used alongside conventional medical treatments. The purpose is to find alternatives (supported by scientific evidence) that reduce some of the illness’s symptoms (depression, fatigue etc.) as well as some of the side effects of conventional treatments, for example, the nausea and weakness caused by chemotherapy. The practices that fall within the realm of complementary therapies can vary from yoga to reiki to acupuncture, etc. More specifically, we want to talk about the

practices that we currently offer in our new Integrative and Complementary Medicine Unit at HC Marbella International Hospital. The creation of this unit is in response to the increasing demand for this type of treatment, because we believe that it is important to create a close bond with every patient. Therefore, we aim to treat the person as a complete individual and not as a personification of an illness taken from a medical book. How does the Integrative and Complementary medicine unit work? To carry out these treatments successfully, a doctor plays the role of consultant and coordinator and begins a dialogue with the patient so that together they can determine the needs on both sides and find a solution among the many practices that we offer. These are the Five Practices that Can Help Improve Your Quality of Life When You are Ill.

Continuing with the idea of creating a dialogue and sharing of experiences, we believe it is important to create discussion groups, led by our psychologist, where patients and their families learn, among other things, how to cope with and reduce physical and psychological pain. Other alternative therapies, generally known by patients as yoga and

Mindfulness is the practice which consists of focusing one’s attention on the present moment with the purpose of clearing the mind and appreciating life. It aims at focusing on feeling better and
“Complementary therapies are a series of practices and products that are used alongside conventional medical treatments. The purpose is to find alternatives (supported by scientific evidence) that reduce some of the illness’s symptoms (depression, fatigue etc.) ” allows patients to focus on the now without worrying about tomorrow, which can, at times, seem uncertain and distressing. In most cases, we obtain positive and highly visible results. Here at HC Marbella International Hospital, we encourage you to learn more about these complementary therapies. A better quality of life may be more accessible than you think. We are with you during your time of need to improve your quality of life.

WITH LPG ENDERMOLOGIE
M
any of us are aware that cellulite is tough to shift. You can exercise, detox and diet, but even the slenderest ones amongst us are still prey to the formation of that orange peel look, which is apparently resistant to all those endeavours. Now, Dynamic Marbella is offering the non-invasive LPG Endermologie body treatment that improves skin quality and provides visible results quickly. This lipomassage technique uses mechanical stimulation of the skin and reactivates the elimination of resistant fat to reshape the silhouette. The result is smooth contours, improved circulation and tighter skin. It is a technique that has been around for at least 30 years, used at top salons and clinics worldwide and now it is available at Dynamic Marbella.
What are the most common body areas treated with LPG?
Cellulite uniquely affects women and it has three causes: * An increase in the size of fat cells * Retention of liquids * Fibrosis – a thickening of connective tissues, often as a result of an injury The main areas affected are the abdomen, the arms, the legs and thighs.
Non-invasive face lift
However, LPG Endermoligie is also of great benefit to the facial area and it is used to tighten up the nasiolabial lines running from the nose to the mouth, that deepen with ageing and make us look older. It’s an excellent non-surgical face lifting technique and clients are thrilled with its results.
How does LPG eliminate cellulite?
It is a treatment that is 100% natural, it isn’t painful and it’s very efficient at removing cellulite. It uses a mechanical head that softens and mobilises the fatty tissue, eliminates excess fluid and reactivates the circulation. The result
40
is a visibly improved appearance in these areas and a reduction in their measurement as well. Most importantly, it improves the circulation, which is great for general health, and firms the tissues to keep the treated area smooth looking.
What do you need to do to maintain this new, smooth appearance after the LPG treatments?
First, it is important to have a complete LPG treatment. Afterwards, we recommend once-a-month maintenance sessions, which will not just help to keep the new skin tone, but will also improve it further. The LPG Cellu M6 that we use has a range of specific programmes to treat the different types of cellulite and it is very important that the professional administering the treatment makes an accurate diagnosis to determine the best treatment for each client.
How many sessions does a person need on average?
In general, we recommend 10 to 12 sessions plus a monthly maintenance treatment. However, as every person is unique and there are different types of cellulite the average number of sessions is hard to determine.
What is the cost of an LPG session/package of sessions at Dynamic Marbella?
LPG sessions cost between 25€ and 65€ depending on the length of the treatment. We also offer a promotional package of 10 sessions, which reduces the cost of Endermologie Body LPG treatments – it’s a similar offer to our package of facial treatments. THE IMPORTANCE OF IN YOUR DIET.
I
’ve been helping people with their exercise and nutrition for over 20 years now and one thing I always set a precedent on is helping them find ways of keeping their diet varied and nutritious with a wide range of healthy foods. Sticking to the basics is always something I like to stress and one key principle to any good diet is to find ways to meet your protein needs. If you didn’t know already, protein is a crucial part of a number of key processes in the body. For example, it helps synthesize important hormones, including ones that make us happy and relaxed, it supports our immune system
42
and boosts our metabolism which helps us lose fat and stay lean for life. And perhaps most importantly it helps to build and repair almost every tissue in our body. Depending on your goals, the amount of protein a person needs to consume can vary from anything upward of 60 grams per day with some athletes needing well over 100 grams. For the everyday person this equates to roughly 15-20grams of protein per meal (based on 3-4 meals a day) which in food terms amounts to one average sized chicken breast.
The way our body works means its best to try and eat a portion of protein with every meal and sometimes as snacks throughout the day rather than in one big portion. There are plenty of good whole food options available to us in order to meet our daily needs (think lean meats, fish and eggs). However, for my clients that follow a plant based diet it can sometimes be a struggle to meet their daily requirements as their food options will have significantly less protein than that provided by lean meats and fish. This is where I like to suggest the use of a vegetable based protein powder like Naturya’s Hemp protein.
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
This is a great product that can deliver as much as 20% of a person’s daily protein requirements per serving. In addition to this it’s also a great source of magnesium and iron which can help my clients feel more energized and mentally alert. As I mentioned before, ideally I want all my clients to be eating protein with every meal but even for the meat eaters this can initially be a struggle and no meal time stands out more in this regard than breakfast. Helping my clients find ways to address this is often a focus for me as this is one of the most beneficial times of the day to have a solid serving of protein (protein consumption at breakfast will help to regulate appetite for the rest of the day). In theory there’s no reason why a healthy breakfast should look any different from a healthy lunch or dinner where we build a meal around a protein source. In reality, however, many people struggle with this, both from a mindset viewpoint (eating certain foods in the morning can feel too alien) and from a time perspective (most people need something quick and easy). This often means they turn to breakfast choices which end up having very little protein content i.e. toast, cereal and porridge.
This is where a product like Naturya’s Hemp protein fits in perfectly (both for meat eaters and non-meat eaters) as it can be easily added to other ingredients to create a healthy, nutritious and protein providing breakfast smoothie or shake. Naturya’s Hemp is cold pressed and gently milled to provide a fine, protein dense powder with a natural earthy flavor and mixes really well when creating smoothies like the recipe I’ve provided below. I also like to encourage my clients to experiment with recipes like this and inspire them to use other great products from Naturya’s range that will help to provide even more key nutrients
“Depending on your goals, the amount of protein a person needs to consume can vary from anything upward of 60 grams per day with some athletes needing well over 100 grams. For the everyday person this equates to roughly 15-20grams of protein per meal.”
to their diet. For example, by adding Naturya Organic Chia Seeds they can boost their intake of calcium and fibre or they might use Naturya’s Fairtrade and organic Cacao powder for a more indulgent flavor that is full of zinc, magnesium and copper. Starting with, and building upon the basics will mean you have a great foundation to healthy way of life. Having a good source of protein with every meal is an essential part of this foundation so why not start today and make a nutritious protein providing shake for your breakfast.
NATURYA BREAKFAST PROTEIN SHAKE * 1 x serving (15g) Naturya Hemp Protein Powder * 1 x half of an avocado * 2 x tablespoons of yogurt (Greek, Coconut or Plant) * 1 x banana * 1 x cup almond milk * 2 x Medjool dates * 1 x heaped teaspoon of almond butter Sprinkle Natuyra Chia Seeds & Goji Berries on top & enjoy!

The Beauty Barometer
We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mind-blowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.
This month Jonathan gives his take on politics, addiction and why he will need something a little stronger than brandy to get him through the festive season. ‘Tis the season of festive madness Grinch, Scrooge, the Anti-Claus, take your pick of titles – I gladly wear them all. I like to call it ‘the C word’ as it conquers up so many words that begin with the letter ‘C’: chaos, calamity, contrived, cringeworthy and…! Christmas brings me out in a rash. Forget, ‘Deck the Halls With Boughs of Holly,’ it’s more like, ‘Deck the Halls With Packs of Valium’. I swear to God, if people put as much effort into their everyday lives as they did into Xmas, the world would be a utopian vision. During the month of December I live in a constant state of contradiction, (well I’m
46
Photo courtesy of Morgan Taylor allowed to - I am artistic after all!) I actually DO love the customs and traditions that go with Christmas and hope that we never lose them. So, please remind me of this in the first week of December when I have lost the feeling in my hand from writing nearly 400 Christmas cards or when I pass out in the El Corte Inglés post office as I pull out my store card to pay for the postage. My clients will happily tell you that I start booking in their Christmas appointments at the end of September. This is quite a selfish requirement but, by organising them, it gives me a tiny element of
control over my life. Honestly, my appointment schedule resembles the landing sequence at Heathrow. In fact I would be better off working in a control tower, because it would probably be less stressful. This year I had to put my tree up on Sunday 13th November as that was the last day I had free till after the New Year.

Livin’ la vida loca
I know everyone is probably heartily sick of the subject but I cannot write this column without mentioning the new President. To be fair, I think the world has gone mad at the moment but putting Trump in charge is like giving a pyromaniac a box of matches.
Okay, let’s talk about the staff party (eye roll). I voted to have it in January when things were a little calmer but the 10th of December has been selected. You see, hangovers and hairdressing do not sit happily together during the festive season. The staff party is when most of this lot let their hair down and it’s not a pretty sight, I can tell you. I am not entirely sure what to expect this year, what with Gerry’s recent revelation that he thinks his arse looks like Ricky Martin’s (at this precise moment he is going through the salon’s playlist, complaining that we don’t have ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’.) I have been Googling images of Ricky’s best asset to try and find out where Gerry has got this idea from, but I am still totally baffled and a little disturbed by the whole debacle. I just pray that, after one too many espresso martinis, he doesn’t try to reenact ‘She Bangs’ at the staff party. It really is enough to put you off your Christmas pudding.
I cannot imagine Trump having an articulate discussion with any head of state and as for the new First Lady, well, I was chuckling away during her first meeting with Michelle Obama which must have lasted all of 30 seconds. After complimenting Michelle on her choice of nail colour she would have run out of things to say. I was absolutely horrified to see that during Trump’s acceptance speech his son started yawning. What kind of example does that set the rest of the world? I was always taught to put my hand over my mouth. Is that too much to ask from the son of the President? And I hope to God that they don’t let Ivana Trump set foot inside White House because she would be sure to paint it pink. Now, one thing I would like to point out is that if Trump was really a friend of the gays, one of us would have fixed his wig by now. Seriously, you don’t know whether to brush it or feed it. I am also hoping that as President he will be given a new style adviser and they will manage to control his skin tone a little better. I would bet all the money in the world that he has a sunbed in his house, as those strange rings around his eyes look very much like goggle marks. Personally I think that the White House needs a woman and, as far as I am concerned, Michelle should stay and turf her husband out. Taking the first step Lottie has been signed up for a two week stay in a local rehabilitation centre to deal with her iPhone addiction. If it wasn’t for the fact she needs her fingers to work the keyboard I would consider breaking some of them. I have come to the conclusion that either none of her friends have a full time job or she is talking to herself all day. If I need her to do anything in the salon, I have taken to WhatsApping her. If that doesn’t work, I may have to resort to Snapchat to get her attention.

THE TIMELESS ART OF ROBERTO SANTO Photos by Irene Sekulic
We attended…
An evening of art to remember hosted by Timeless Gallery who brought the celebrated sculptor Roberto Santo to Marbella for the private viewing prior to his latest exhibition at the gallery. Native New Yorker Santo is one of the world’s foremost sculptors and he flew in from Miami to join in the evening’s entertainment.
We enjoyed…
The wonderful start to the evening at Timeless Gallery’s Art Villa where we, and all the other guests, appreciated the art works on display and delighted in the superb canapés and drinks that flowed throughout the event.
We were surprised…
When all the guests were transported to the Timeless Gallery in Puerto Banús where we were stunned by a fabulous rotating sculpture by Santo. The champagne, music and discussions about art combined to make this one of the most enjoyable social evenings on the coast.
Congratulations and a big thanks to…
Mikael Segelström and the Timeless Gallery team for such an exceptional event that was both fun and intellectually enlightening.

LA SALA GOLF SUPER LEAGUE AT VILLA PADIERNA’S ALFERINI GOLF COURSE We attended…
The most recent outing for the La Sala Super League, which was held at the stunning Alferini course, part of the 5 star Villa Padierna Resort. Despite the fact that it was mid-November, the sun shone in bright blue skies.
We applauded…
The more than 100 players who turned out for this round of the tournament and everyone enjoyed a refreshing gin and tonic from the halfway house bar. As this was the penultimate golf day before the December final, when participants will find out who has won the trip to Portugal, the golfers gave everything they had to their game today.

ANTIMA AND NORDICA SCORE ANOTHER OPEN HOUSE SUCCESS We attended…
Antima and Nordica’s latest ‘Open House’ event at Villa Olivia in Nueva Andalucia on the frontline of the prestigious Las Brisas Golf club. As we know from previous visits to villas designed by Antima and promoted by Nordica, the latest residence is the last word in luxury and top quality design.
We admired…
The stunning views of La Concha mountain that owners can enjoy from either the beautifully designed outdoor space or through the expanse of glass that makes sure the villa’s interior is always filled with light. The custom made furniture and Ralph Lauren wallpaper added the refined touches that are the signature of all Antima-designed residences.
We toured…
The sensational interior and fell in love with the master bedroom suite on the top floor with its sea views, large private balcony and, to top it off, a private outdoor bathtub. Downstairs, the spacious open planning and use of sliding doors demonstrated the contemporary style of flow through and we imagined evenings spent in the high-end media room with fireplace, the games room and bodega.
Congratulations and a big thanks to…
Team Antima and team Nordica for another inspiring Open House – we’re not surprised Villa Olivia was sold only hours after the event!

TORQUE TALK
Our in-depth motoring review
DAWN RAIDER The Rolls-Royce Dawn oozes effortless style and refinement
76
TORQUE TALK
Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the ROLLS-ROYCE DAWN
77
TORQUE TALK
78
I have always held that a Rolls-Royce is so much more than a mere motorcar; it is a way of life. However, this can be interpreted on more than one level, and it is a fact of life that the majority of Phantom and Ghost owners use their cars as business tools. On the other hand, the Phantom Coupe, Drophead Coupe, Wraith, and now the Dawn are a quite different kettle of fish. Bought for driving pleasure by their owners, these two-door RollsRoyce cars are a bold statement of freedom, of taste and of financial wherewithal on a level beyond that of higher volume luxury cars.
“
“
F
rom its debut in 2007, the Phantom Drophead Coupe wore the crown as the ultimate super luxury convertible. But production has now ceased, the Dawn is the new RollsRoyce convertible, and it is time to assess what this means.
TORQUE TALK
Rear passengers do not merely ‘get out’ of a Dawn but rather stand and disembark as if from a Riva motor launch onto a glamorous private jetty.
So while many Phantom and Ghost owners take the trouble to personalise their cars, the impetus to do so must be even greater amongst owners of the two-door cars. Like a super yacht or private jet, a Rolls-Royce is commissioned rather than bought off the shelf. Thus, no two such cars should ever be alike unless bought as a matching set by the same owner, their paintwork and interior appointments bearing his or her unique personal hallmarks.
An impatient buyer might purchase a dealer demonstration car, but they will definitely miss out on the edifying process of commissioning a personalised masterpiece of automotive craftsmanship. For a busy individual, this process means setting aside time to think about and discuss their car’s conception in the way that the fitting sessions for a bespoke Savile Row suit take place.
79
TORQUE TALK
80
TORQUE TALK
While the rear-hinged doors that are a modern Rolls-Royce hallmark make ingress and egress from the rear seats easier than normal, this process is quite novel with the roof down and the front seat motored forwards. I was particularly amused by the paragraph in the press pack that suggested, “rear passengers do not merely ‘get out’ of a Dawn but rather stand and disembark as if from a Riva motor launch onto a glamorous private jetty.” Speaking with Rolls-Royce design chief Giles Taylor about his team’s latest al fresco masterpiece I learned that the Dawn is far more than just a convertible Wraith.
“
While 80 percent of the Dawn’s body panels are new, it is similar to the Wraith under the skin. This means its inner architecture is derived from the
Ghost, which in turn is based on the F01 BMW 7-Series platform. The double wishbone front, and multi-link rear suspension with air springs also shared with the Ghost. “In design terms, we started with a clean sheet of paper, so the Dawn is a car in its own right,” Giles explained. “Apart from the front wings and door outer skins, the sheet metal is all new.” This gives the Dawn a unique look from its bespoke front windscreen to its wood covered rear deck cover that does actually remind me of a Riva motor launch. It is an elegant motorcar in every sense of the word. On my way back to the factory from the photo location I drove through part of the local town of Chichester and found myself behind a Reliant Robin three-wheeler in a line of traffic. With the Dawn attracting lots of admiring looks, the irony was not lost on me that one of the cheapest and one of the most expensive British-made cars were sitting nose to tail in that great leveller, the rush hour traffic jam. As the nearby Rolls-Royce factory employs a growing number of people from the area, local support for the brand runs high here. The number of smiles, waves and thumbs up I received from pedestrians and even motorcycle riders underlined the pride felt in the area.
“
The basic Dawn has some impressive attributes, and its not inconsiderable 2,560kg kerb weight is the result of the sheer luxury oozing from every pore of this super luxury convertible. For instance each thickly padded electric seat tips the scales at 100kg, and the multi-layer canvas hood, which cycles in 20 seconds at speeds up to 50km/h, makes for what the engineers claim to be the quietest convertible in history, beating even the mighty Phantom Drophead in this respect.

TORQUE TALK
The Dawn’s motive force comes from a 6,592cc litre twin-turbo V12 engine producing 563bhp at 5,250rpm, underpinned by 780Nm of torque at just 1,500rpm. This is the same output as the Ghost and 10-percent less than the lighter Wraith, which tells you that Rolls-Royce sees their fourseater convertible as a more relaxed kind of car. While the Dawn often surprises you with the breadth and depth of its dynamic capabilities, it is not as accomplished as its Coupe sister. More modest levels of stiffness in its air springs and active anti-roll bars are required to compensate for the lower torsional stiffness in its roofless structure, so the Dawn does not have the same level of dynamics as the stiffer bodied, more tightly sprung Wraith. The ride is sublime, a totally cosseting secondary ride combined with a pillowy, but well controlled primary ride making for a totally relaxed and
supremely comfortable experience. The feeling of isolation from everything that the tarmac can throw at you is tangible, and the word that springs to mind is sprezzatura, an Italian colloquialism that implies effortless superiority. Despite being 10% less powerful than its lighter Coupe sister, the Dawn still gathers speed with seemingly little effort. That is the magic of big torque at work, and helped by the totally seamless eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, illustrates perfectly what Rolls-Royce means by waftability, However, exploiting its sheer power is not the best way to enjoy a Dawn. Proceeding in a brisk but dignified manner, with the Power Reserve meter as close to its 100% reserve as possible certainly is and as I wafted along the Sussex coastline roads al fresco, the lyrics of James Taylor’s song, ‘Secret ‘O Life’ came to mind, perfectly encapsulating an unhurried journey in the Dawn:

TORQUE TALK
“The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time….Isn’t it a lovely ride? Sliding down, gliding down, try not to try too hard, it’s just a lovely ride.”
“The Dawn is more than just a car, it is a celebration of dolce vita, a car for special occasions, and one you can feel good in!” For those who want to get the most
As Giles Taylor said,
out of life, the Rolls-Royce Dawn is a wonderful way to cruise through it!

don’t get caught out by Infidelity Figures gathered from various sources by Conflict Marbella show that the period between December and February is the most likely time of the year when marital infidelity can take place and be discovered by their partner.
C
onflict Marbella is the dedicated consultancy service in the region from Conflict International who, from their head office in London, specialise in providing bespoke intelligence, investigation, security and risk advice services to clients worldwide. Statistics from several studies as well as their own extensive experience show that the office Christmas party is the main catalyst for developing infidelity within a relationship. Figures vary wildly
but somewhere between a third and 45 per cent of respondents to polling admit to having had an office party fling. A survey in London showed that 10 per cent of people had started a relationship following a Christmas party and there is no reason to suggest that this doesn’t also happen elsewhere. Although some of those polled would have been single at the time, it does still heighten concern if your own relationship has been showing signs of strain.

Advice from counsellors includes suggesting that partners accompany their spouse to the party so that things do not get out of hand. During extended holiday periods, anyone who is being unfaithful may not be able to resist the temptation to remain in contact so it is advisable to be vigilant.
Be aware of the telltale signs Cheating partners will often use a mobile phone discreetly to stay contact with someone they are having an extramarital affair with while remaining at home with the family. Be particularly suspicious if your partner is making excuses to be alone by disappearing into another room or into the garden to text or make a call. Checking phone call and text message history for patterns can sometimes offer a clue.
conflictinternational.com
Similarly, any unexpected cash withdrawals or gift receipts that don’t match presents in your own family can raise suspicions that a cheating partner is buying for a lover. Some of these patterns can be explained away but a sure-fire method of discovering whether a partner is cheating is to contact Conflict Marbella. They can provide covert surveillance teams to find out whether matrimonial infidelity is taking place or not.
The need to d iscover the truth If you suspect your partner has already been unfaithful, Conflict Marbella is here to either confirm your suspicions or set your mind at ease. They can utilise a multitude of professional services including the provision of covert surveillance teams to obtain
evidential footage of matrimonial infidelity taking place. Uncovering matrimonial issues is clearly a sensitive area and Conflict director Mike LaCorte says although they are brought in to a difficult situation, there is often a certain peace of mind of sorts when suspicions are either confirmed or ruled out. “Once the call is made there is certainly an issue. There are obviously questions that someone cannot answer themselves, and they have no means of finding out, so that’s where we come in.” If an affair is discovered and the other party moves towards divorce proceedings, there are often additional investigations that take place which Conflict have many years of experience in carrying out.
Mike says: “Depending on the extent of the assets shared between both parties, more often than not there is an issue of one of the spouses hiding assets and we are brought in to find what is being hidden. We always work with the knowledge of what evidence is needed to be admissible in future court proceedings so everything we do is compiled into a report which can be passed on to a legal team for further action.” The festive season is a joyous time for many, but it can be far more difficult for those whose relationship may be in trouble. “Making that first call when there are signs of trouble in a relationship is always difficult,” says Mike. “But it is often better to confirm or allay suspicions rather than allow them to make matters worse.”

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree I
t is a popular misconception that it was dear Prince Albert who introduced the Christmas tree into Great Britain from Germany. In that country the tradition had originated with, of all people, the Reformer Martin Luther (1483-1546), (who, it is said, carefully ate a (presumably small) spoonful of his own faeces every day to remind himself of the sinfulness of the world but I digress.) One evening he looked up at the stars shining through the branches of trees, and felt that he could create the same effect in his own home, both to delight children and to demonstrate how God’s Grace could shine through into a sinful world. And so the tradition began. And it was in December 1800 that Queen Charlotte (1744-1818), the wife of George III, erected the first Christmas tree in Britain at a children’s party. A guest wrote: “After the company had walked round and admired the tree, each child obtained a portion of the sweets it bore, together with a toy, and they all returned home quite delighted”. Prince Albert (1819-1861) probably knew of this party and, with an increasing brood of royal children to entertain (most of whom were loathed by their mother) decided to reintroduce the tradition.
88
With the help of people like Charles Dickens, who in many ways invented the modern Christmas festivities, the idea caught on. At the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 a new idea emerged. Germany had suffered a decline in its fir tree population, and artificial trees made from goose feathers dyed green began to make an appearance (what this did to the population of geese is not recorded). Such “trees” began to enter the UK market. In 1780 an inventor by the name of William Addis had produced the first toothbrush. His descendants in the brush making firm of the same name, by now also producing items like toilet brushes, realised that their machinery could make really large toilet brushes looking like trees, and so a new industry was born. Despite popular belief, the widespread use today of plastic trees is not an ecologically sound proposition. Natural trees
reproduce fairly rapidly each year, and can be mulched down. Plastic trees when discarded continue to pollute the environment for decades. In the wonderful QI television series, John Sessions once wondered aloud “Do you think that Hitler’s Christmas tree had only one ball hanging on it?”! Which, of course, raises the question as to when Hitler should have removed his ball, and when we should likewise take down Christmas trees and other festive decorations. Arguments rage regarding whether this should be on January 5th or 6th – which is “Twelfth Night”? Fortunately, one does not actually have to give an answer, because both dates are wrong. Housewives busily hoovering up dropped pine needles behind the sofa will be pleased to hear that they can do so until the eve of Candlemas. This date, February 1st, when traditionally
One evening he looked up at the stars shining through the branches of trees, and felt that he could create the same effect in his own home, both to delight children and to demonstrate how God’s Grace could shine through into a sinful world. And so the tradition began.
Jesus and Mary presented the baby Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem, was once regarded as the beginning of spring. Quite apart from the tree, early Christmas decorations consisted of greenery – “Deck the hall with boughs of holly” – and these remained in the house to give a semblance of cheer during long dark winters. In and before the seventeenth century the “Christmas” period itself actually lasted from Saint Martin’s day on November 1st to Candlemas on February 2nd. Notwithstanding the more modern idea of it starting on Advent Sunday (the fourth before Christmas), it is apparent that in this recent Internet Age the period has actually been extended further, as the first “Christmas” queries make their appearance on August 25th (2007 analysis of internet usage). The western Christian Church celebrates the day after Christmas Day, the 26th December, as Saint Stephen’s Day. (In the eastern Church he has to wait until the 27th.) Given the nature of some Christmas Day practices, it is appropriate that Saint Stephen is the Patron Saint of headaches (and, being the first Christian martyr to be stoned to death, also of stonemasons.) In Britain many regard this day as “Boxing Day”, so called from the practice of giving “Christmas Boxes” to people who have offered various services throughout the year. Actually, “Boxing Day” should be defined as “the first working day after Christmas”, so that, for example, if Christmas Day falls on a Friday, “Boxing Day” will fall on the Monday following. This makes sense.
You cannot, for example, give a little gift to the postman if he’s not working! (In Wales there was a downside to this day for servants who had been habitually caught over-sleeping throughout the year. On this day they were whipped with holly branches!) And whilst we are looking at minor misconceptions over the festive season, should we be humming “Jingle Bells”? Indeed, we should not! The song was actually written for Thanksgiving by James Lord Pierpoint (1822-1893) in 1857. He was something of tearaway, running away to sea at the age of 14, and eventually fighting for the Confederacy, for whom he wrote a number of battle songs. (He also wrote “minstrel” songs for whites with blacked-up faces!) The song was originally called “The one-horse open sleigh”, and is the first tune to have been played in outer space, when in 1965 Wally Shirra played it to Houston on a smuggled harmonica, accompanied by Ton Stafford on equally smuggled sleigh bells. Pierpoint died before his song gained popularity as a Christmas ditty. “Winter Wonderland” (1934) was actually written by a dying man, Dick Smith, as he watched children playing in the snow through his sanatorium window. He lived long enough to see it reach number 2 in the US charts. Other great Christmas “hits”, such as “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer” (he was originally called Reginald!), “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”, “White Christmas”, “Let it snow”, and “Santa Baby”, all share the distinction of having come from the pens of Jewish songwriters – Johnny Marks, Irving Berlin, Sammy Cahn and Joan Javits!

F
M Consulting Realty Group is an extraordinary Costa del Sol success story, not only as a business but in terms of the resounding success they bring to so many of their clients. The property consultancy is unrivalled in helping investors find and sell hotels, land and other real estate and tourism assets on the Costa del Sol and has sold over 1800 first-class, second homes and residences to an international clientele. You sense the winning atmosphere the moment you enter its offices where warmth, friendliness and justified selfassurance abound. That sure confidence is built on a quarter of a century of property consulting, development, construction, marketing, sales and management.

decision to settle down here when I was offered a job. Once I’d made that choice, I decided next to concentrate on building my own property company on the Costa del Sol. I placed all of my eggs in one basket and it paid off. We’ve had very good times here and built a great business. Over the last few years, many investors and promoters have come to our area buying lots of land. Why? Do you have to ask? Look how beautiful it is.
”
We hear you are taking FM Consulting in new directions?
We learnt more about FM Consulting’s history and its current projects from its founder Fausto Martínez. He has an excellent track record as a professional and was formerly General Manager of Estepona’s Hotel El Paraiso and Marbella’s Hotel Golf Plaza. Since then he has applied his experience to the creation of successful developments, such as the Bahia del Velerin, Monte Paraiso Country Club, Costa Galera, the Cortijo del Mar Resort and others. He is also a founder member of Tourism Initiatives Marbella.
We are known for employing the highest calibre architects who work on the most gorgeous locations and as developers we are currently taking two new directions. FM Consulting is an exclusive agency that takes on all the marketing and the sales of the project from scratch. It has a hotel arm, which organises all the services, including taking properties and turning them into tourists apartments. We have found that the blending of developing and managing the rentals is an excellent combination and provides profits to the apartment owners. It also gives confidence to the buyer.
Was it a case of “love at first sight” when you arrived in Marbella?
Tell us about your new projects.
Yes, I fell in love with Marbella at first sight when I came on vacation in the early 1980s. It has become fundamental for me to have 300 to 320 days of sunshine during the year and irresistible Marbella gave me that. Even in January, you can eat on the terrace in temperatures of 18 to 20 degrees. So, it wasn’t a hard

AND “ COME YOU WILL
Our new projects are generating a lot of excitement and FM Consulting is selling large numbers of luxury apartments at a rapid pace. For example, at the Cortijo del Mar of the 250 homes only 15 are still available for sale. This project on the New Golden Mile is an Andalusian style development with one and twobedroom apartments fitted with Siemens
appliances and an intelligent home system. The tropical gardens feature a pool, children’s club and playground as well as adult leisure facilities. We are also very proud of Las Terrazas de Cortesin in the prestigious Finca de Cortesin urbanization. These 45 apartments are in the modern architectural style and every apartment, from ground floor to penthouse, has sea and golf views with south-facing terraces. Plus, it has two swimming pools, gardens, parking and storage. Because of the growing interest in the New Golden Mile we also have Las Terrazas de Atalaya, an off-plan development of 56 modern apartments in Atalaya Alta, with large terraces and solariums overlooking the golf course, and some have panoramic sea views. It offers open plan living, four pools, a padel court and undergound parking. In the same area, FM has another offplan development Syzygy Homes: The Residences. These 47 apartments with open plan living space, landscaped gardens, swimming pools and a rooftop chill out area with splendid views of the Med. And, we also have a spectacular offplan villa development on the New Golden Mile, Syzygy Homes: The Villas. The 11 villas in the modern style offer

open living, floor to ceiling windows, two master bedrooms, a Balinese shower, rooftop garden and ecological gardens below. All the villas have the latest in domotic technology as well.
What would you say to buyers is a key bonus when buying property in Marbella – apart from the weather and the beautiful landscape, of course? The security in this area is something that is a fundamental bonus in my opinion. Anyone who comes here on holiday or buys a property here and spends longer periods in Marbella can feel this comfort, security and freedom. I think all those elements are the perfect formula to make people happy here. There are few cities in the world with such diversity of culture and religion with great Spanish, German, British and French schools.

Las Terrazas de Atalaya
First, I would emphasize that they should look at as many available projects and personally visit them. Then work with a company that can be trusted and has a good history, such as FM Consulting. There is a law in Spain, which stipulates that if anyone buys a house that is not yet built, the amount they deposit has to be totally guaranteed by a bank or by a company. So if the developer has any problems, the money that was deposited would be returned immediately to the potential buyer. There are very few countries that have this law. I would also add, the pattern of sales is not as frenetic as it was back in 2004, but it is quite respectable. Prices have gone down tremendously in the last few years and we are now looking at very good value. I believe this is a great time to invest into real estate in Marbella, Estepona and its surrounding areas, especially if you buy into a new project development when you will receive your property in about 18 months. That’s about the same time it takes to facilitate financing of the property. Meanwhile, you can visit every now and then to see how the development is going and receive 3-dimensional renderings of the progress. HOME COUTURE
I
t’s hard enough keeping up the interior design of your home the year through without having to also consider seasonal decorations too. This doesn’t mean redecorating each and every room in colours to match all things Christmassy, and ending up with a home that could be mistaken for Santa’s Grotto is probably not everyone’s idea of a comfortable way to spend the holiday. But, you can make a few changes that will create that warm, cosy look for very little effort and without huge expense. Swap your usual cushions for something a little more cosy such as faux fur or add luxe chunky knit weave throws to your furniture to transform a space, making it perfect for friends and family to come together in comfort as well as style. If you don’t have a fire, or the wall space
to install a flue, there are other options, such as bioethanol fires that are ready to go once you have fuel. When it’s grey outside and the blue sky has been replaced with unpredictable, moody clouds we often turn to the Scandinavians who are no strangers to creating that cosy winter feeling indoors to escape the constant cold. The Danes have gone as far as coining a word to describe this particular genre of interior design as “hygge”. Pronounced “heurgha”, there isn’t a direct translation available in English, despite this word first having been documented in the 18thcentury. The closest we have come is the word is “hug”, although it is not known if this is based on etymology or interpretation. In terms of meaning it is fairly accurate and “hygge” could be seen as turning ones
home into a large Fairisle knitted hug for ones senses, or as it has been described, “the absence of anything annoying or emotionally overhwhelming; taking pleasure from the presence of gentle, soothing things.” With that in mind we have rounded up a few items to make your home softer and more soothing while you sit back in your cashmere slouch socks to enjoy your eggnog latte. An enduring symbol of Yuletide It wouldn’t be Christmas without a fir tree adorned with all manner of sparkly, foiled, frilly fancies, only to be used for a couple of weeks; at FOC we are all for ecological interiors, no matter what the occasion. The beauty with of faux trees is that they can come already lit with twinkly lights and if carefully stored away can be used for years to come.

Knowing which wine is the perfect match with each dish is the mark of a real expert, so we are very lucky that our sommelier, Julio, has all the answers.

om Perignon was the 17th century Benedictine monk who invented champagne and the name given to Moet & Chandon´s Prestige Cuvée first released in 1937. Dom Perignon is quite possibly the most famous wine in champagne and, perhaps, the world. Only the best grapes of Chardonnay & Pinot Noir are used in equal proportions to craft DP Champagne; the spirit of the house is to achieve a perfect balance between white and black grapes. Dom Pérignon, always a vintage champagne, will generally spend several years on the lees, allowing this interaction to play an integral role in shaping the wine’s character. Eventually, eight to 10 years after the harvest, most bottles will be released on their first plenitude, keeping a significant portion of champagne ageing on lees for an extended period. Since 2000, Dom Pérignon has periodically released these older wines under the Oenothèque name, either White or Rosé DP from the Vintages 1990, 1993, 1995 and 1996 but with the 1998 vintage the term has been

According to Richard Geoffroy, Chef de Cave of Dom Pérignon there are three plenitudes in the life of a given vintage: the first spans seven to eight years, the second one arrives between 12 and 15 years and the third comes after around 30 years, when the champagne has spent more than 20 years on its lees which are now termed as P3. For Mr. Geoffrey, DP is a living paradox in many ways: intense then complex, dark and yet luminous, mature yet fresh and vivacious.

OSH Fun Kitchen is Marbella’s restaurant scene ‘big hit’ of 2016 and 2017 is going to be even tastier for the leader in ‘Cool Culinaria’. MOSH gave Marbella a launch party this year that rocked the socks off the social scene, so a return visit to review this imaginative venue was filled with the kind of anticipation usually reserved for a night at a rock venue. Our focus was of course the food, but we also looked forward to sharing the space with the beautiful, interesting clientele that MOSH attracts. If you haven’t yet heard of MOSH, let me tell you a bit about its décor and ambience before I get the menu. With its stripped-down walls, wooden floors and comfy, upholstered chairs, it exudes the kind of ‘capital city chic’ one expects to find in Barcelona, Madrid, London or New York. It’s a vibe that is on the one hand youthful,

and on the other it is ageless. At night, the subdued lighting that picks out specific areas with spots, makes diners feel cocooned in a world of their choice, and one where even strangers feel familiar. It has also put on some fabulously theatrical events such as its Hallowmosh, which was billed as, “the scariest party in Marbella,” and
But, let’s get to the heart of MOSH: its menu and its signature cocktails. On arrival we each chose a different cocktail to whet our appetites. It was difficult to make a choice and there was a lot of changing of minds that went on until we finally selected an Espresso Martini that has vanilla infused vodka as its base with espresso coffee, kahlua and hazelnut to add flavour. The Moshito is perfect for mojito lovers and the Moscow Mule and Classic Cosmo both left us wanting more. MOSH-designed shots and non-alcoholic cocktails are also available. By now we were ready to study the menu. We are all fans of sushi and dishes with an Asian influence, so it goes without saying that the Edamame, and the MOSH Factory Duck Bun, which is a steam bun filed with Peking duck, hoisin sauce, leek and cucumber were instant orders from the Small Bites menu, and we couldn’t leave out the Sashimi or the Niguiri either. on trend, we also ordered the drilled venison filet ‘Deer to my heart’, which was served with sweet potato purée and shiitake mushrooms. Heaven on a plate! The lamb burger with French fries, teriyaki mayo and lambs lettuce was just delicious and the Black Angus T-bone steak with French fries and baby vegetables was sensationally succulent.

both of these and we selected the combo plate to make sure we got a taste of everything. The sushi was super fresh, just as you’d want it to be, and the delicacy of the flavouring used in the other dishes was perfection. We also shared a Jarasho, which is a Russian meat-filled pasta dish in miniature that got the thumbs up from all of us. Although, we could easily have ordered more from the Japanese menu and the other starters, we decided that it would be advisable to move on to the main dishes quickly. Again, the menu presented us with an enviable range of dishes and the Marinated Salmon with kale and baby veggies was just divine. Thanks to those of us who watch cookery shows and know that venison is very

One person’s reaction was “Just give me them all!” which was an appropriate reaction to a menu that starts with a Dark Kiss and ends with Dracula: Curiosity Killed the Cat. This was vanilla cream, coca-cola sorbet, peta zetas and berries foam. If you’re wondering what ‘peta zetas’ is, it is popping candy. There is also a cold white chocolate soup with rosemary, lime ice cream and berries that we all agreed was glorious. And, if you’re worried about having had your ‘five a day’ there is also a pineapple confit with coconut purée and a ginger biscuit foam that will make you feel more righteous. Elliott Wright reveals Olivia’s new winter tapas menu and brunch concept
W
hen Elliott Wright and his lovely fiancée Sadie invited the Marbella press for an informal meeting, we all wondered just what news the enterprising and energetic restaurant owner would have in store for us. Well, it was very yummy news focusing on Olivia’s new winter tapas menu and the launch of a brand new brunch event, but it also touched on Elliott’s personal life and that of the woman he describes as “my rock.”
F A M I LY M A N
Olivia’s restaurant is in an enviable location: the beach and sparkling sea provides a view that immediately makes you feel relaxed and the cheery staff give guests a welcome that makes each person feel like family, something that Elliott Wright cherishes because his own family is very close to his heart. Elliott proudly admits that he still goes to his parents for advice and his brother Eddie is moving to the Costa del Sol soon, which he is excited about. He’s also looking forward to having his two children in Spain for Christmas, and anyone who has watched his TV show

“Playa in Marbella”, aired on ITVBe during summer 2016, will be aware of just how much his children Olivia and Elliott mean to him. Sadie is a big hit with his children and Elliott divulged that his fiancée wants a considerable sized family once they are married. Naturally, there was some discussion of the TV show, which Elliott revealed was “50% documentary and 30% reality show.” For him the show was a business promotion tool that gave Olivia’s exposure – the restaurant has 50,000 followers on Instagram -- and he also confided that he is currently in talks with ITV about another series that will disclose an exciting new development with the restaurant, but that is something we will have to wait and find out about on television. Apart from his stint in TOWIE, Elliott has been involved in the restaurant business since he was twenty-one, but openly admitted that his years of experience hadn’t quite prepared him for running a restaurant on the Costa del Sol, even though he managed one on the Costa Blanca. He said: “I was shocked at how difficult it is on the Costa del Sol,” but he has risen to the challenge and his new winter menu and brunch concepts indicate that here is a man who doesn’t give up easily and is determined to make a success of everything.
The new Friday/Saturday Brunch The “Friday Brunch” idea came from Sadie, and it’s a concept that has already proved popular in Dubai and London. From 2pm to 5pm you can dine and drink for a set price whilst enjoying live music and a DJ on the scrumptious brunch menu that lives up to Olivia’s reputation for blending the traditional with the modern and Asian flavours with European classics. Both Sadie and Elliott are keen to promote Olivia’s as the place to come when you want to wind down and spend time with friends or family, and they believe that this brunch is the perfect event for that. The brunch concept will launch on Friday 9th December 2016 and it is expected to prove very popular with both local residents and Elliott’s many fans, who even travel from Alicante to dine at Olivia’s, such is the reputation of both the restaurant and its owner. The visitors from the Costa Blanca were already familiar with Elliott, thanks to the Wright family’s restaurant Eduardos in Villamartin, which has consistently received glowing reviews. Olivia’s winter menu and Sunday roast Olivia’s winter tapas menu launched on 26th October and Elliott says of it: “This is the best menu I’ve had in my whole career.” From succulent sushi, carpaccio, lobster and assorted seafood dishes, it is a menu that is “traditional but

also modern and there’s a significant Asian fusion element. It’s a broad span of culinary styles and flavours.” And there is still Olivia’s Sunday Roast, which is in Elliott’s words: “The best roast on the coast and I don’t care what anyone says different.” Elliott dismisses the criticisms of his pricing and points out that you can eat well from €20 at Olivia’s and the house wine is only €16 per bottle. This is significantly lower than the cost of eating out at establishments offering a similarly stylish and cosmopolitan experience on the Costa del Sol.

Olivia’s will also be open for Christmas lunch (€95 for adults/€50 for children) and its New Year’s Eve party (€195) will undoubtedly be an extravaganza of excellent food, sensational cocktails and brilliant entertainment. It would be advisable to book either of these immediately, if you haven’t done so already, as this is bound to be a popular party destination over the festive season. Strong staff and a family vibe Elliott admits that in the past he had
some teething problems with staff but that these are now resolved. His new general manager Alberto comes with a quality pedigree, having managed at London’s The Ivy. To

IT’S A BROAD SPAN OF CULINARY STYLES AND FLAVOURS.” attract staff from such a prestigious restaurant signals that Olivia’s is well above average and that it is set to maintain and build on its already superb reputation. It is very important to Elliott that his staff make guests feel personally welcome at every visit, that it is seen as a family restaurant and that everyone feels that they are “coming into my house rather than my restaurant.”
Currently, Elliott has no plans for a new restaurant although he admits that he is considering another Olivia’s on the coast. However, he is keeping his business close to home and ruled out ventures in either London or Dubai, quashing any rumours to the contrary. Right now his mission is to promote his new winter menu and the Friday brunch and have a wonderful Christmas with Sadie and his two children. We’ll find out soon enough what other surprises Elliott Wright has tucked up his sleeve. As they say, watch this space! C/ Torreón 13, La Cala de Mijas Tel. +34 952 494 935, oliviaslacala.com

COSTA CUISINE
a real taste of Italy
I
talian food is often associated with comfort, coziness and friendship. That’s because the Italians approach their meals with a zeal and ideology unmatched by any other region in the world. They don’t see food merely as a necessary survival mechanism, but relish the experience as a bridge between people and cultures, an opportunity to share stories and warmth over nonna’s home-cooked pasta and a rich red table wine. This is exactly the type of atmosphere and cultural heritage NOTO Food and People has been able to capture.
Tucked away in the cozy streets of Nueva Andalucia, NOTO is a recent renovation of the legendary neighbourhood staple, Regina. Under new management, NOTO offers its customers a spacious, naturally-lit interior and a chic, modern atmosphere. During the day, there are great lunch specials and a relaxed vibe. At night, however, it turns into a busy, clamorous environment, true to the Italian way, filled with laughter, clinking of wine glasses, and communal enjoyment of great Italian food. On weekends, there is often entertainment in the form of a live guitarist or singer who perform for the guests’ enjoyment. These shows have had many great reviews and are definitely worth checking out, but make sure to call in advance because reservations fill up pretty quickly. One thing that hasn’t changed through the renovations though, is the main chef, Luciano. He has stayed with the restaurant throughout. He has seen it as Regina and as NOTO and the menu has stayed as authentically Italian as ever. He has decided to keep the menu fairly simple and traditional, throwing in an unexpected but always innovative special dish here and there, depending on season and whim. Luckily we got to try some of these delicious dishes and were transported to the beauty of Italy with every bite. We started with one of the most popular dishes, the fresh Tuna Tartar, a perfect
122
mix of equally proportioned ingredients coming together in zesty scintillating harmony. The tuna’s flavour was perfectly captured with just enough citrus and complemented with fresh avocado, cucumber and wasabi. The tartar was fresh and the wasabi gave it just enough bite to tease the palate, followed by the tart qualities of the lemon. Our friendly waiter recommended this dish to us and we were happy we chose it. Another option was the Degustation Platter, which is a great choice for any newcomer because you can choose a couple of different options and get a real sense of many of the flavours that Luciano has come up with for his menu. It’s also a great way to start the evening with your friends, accompanied by a nice bottle of Italian wine (because we all know that sharing is caring)!
Another appetizer we tried from the dinner menu were the NOTO Mussels. This dish was inspired by Luciano’s visit to Paris, when he discovered the magical taste of French mussels. He decided to give the recipe his own twist and added lemongrass into the mix. The results were divine! Cooked in a creamy shallot, chive and lemongrass sauce, these mussels are perfectly balanced in their citrus to cream ratio. They are wonderfully refreshing and tender, but not overly filling as can often happen with mussels. Make sure to pre-order some extra bread, because you’ll definitely want to soak up every last bite of this dish.
COSTA CUISINE
Next, as is traditional, we moved on to the pasta course. The Seafood Spaghetti was everything you could ask for from a beachtown restaurant. Bought fresh daily from the local seafood market, Luciano makes sure to get the best and the freshest ingredients for his dishes. Clams, mussels, king prawns, squid and octopus came together for an exquisite culinary delight. One wouldn’t expect spaghetti to have such a degustatory effect, but its perfect simplicity and the freshest of ingredients truly blew us away. We also made sure to try the Squid Ink Fettuccine, a personal favourite. Luciano later told us that he worked long and hard to perfect a sauce that could accompany such an intense taste as squid ink. Its saltiness can be a difficult element to master, but we think he pulled it off marvellously. All of the ingredients seemed to fit right in with each other and the dish had an elegantly balanced palate. Lastly, from the pasta and risotto part of the menu, we decided to try the Scallop Risotto and weren’t disappointed with this choice. The dish consists of tender buttered scallops, velvety saffron and delicate lemon over a fluffy bed of risotto. What better choices? The saffron gave the dish a subtle floral flavour which complemented the scallops very well. Luciano told us that he was inspired to create this dish when he visited Sorrento, a town overlooking the Bay of Naples in Southern Italy, where the scent of the salt water and the lemon trees

The dish fits this imagery perfectly. After pasta and seafood, we proceeded to the main dishes. If you are a meatlover make sure to order the NOTO Fillete Steak. It is a wonderful mixture of tradition and modernity, just like NOTO Food and People. Prepared in an Amarone wine reduction and smoked with delicious herbs, this steak is tender, juicy and lean. It pairs very well with a robust red wine. If you decide to stick with seafood for the main entrée, try the Marinated Seabass and you won’t be disappointed. Marinated with a zesty mixture of coriander, lime, red chili and daikon, this seabass melts in your mouth and reveals an extraordinary combination of flavours. Luciano loves to bring out the natural flavours of his ingredients and uses his marinades and sauces to accentuate the main dish, rather than conceal it. This strategy guarantees that every dish is light and only bears the essentials necessary to excite the palate and provide for an unforgettable culinary experience. It also allows you to move from one dish
to another without being overwhelmed with flavour, but rather to taste the various ingredients that come together in magical combinations. Lastly, we had to try the pizza. Pizza is notoriously Italian and any good restaurant can be judged by the quality of their pizza. We ordered the NOTO Pizza and received a perfectly oven-baked, thin-crust pie topped with arugula, black truffle oil, cream and mushrooms. What wonderful rustic ingredients! We felt we had been transported to Luciano’s home town in Italy and got the full experience of sharing simple delicious food made by a family member. It was absolutely delicious and it passed the ‘Pizza Test’ with flying colours - NOTO is a quintessentially authentic Italian spot. Finally, after such a rich culinary indulgence, we decided to have one last degustatory experience to balance out our night. We couldn’t leave without tasting something from the dessert menu and, with the help of our waiter, we settled on the Profiteroles. Made from scratch, these profiteroles are heaven itself. They are generously filled with chantilly cream, covered in white chocolate and sprinkled with toasted almonds. This dessert will end any date night perfectly, coupled with a cup of coffee or a subtle sweet wine. After this gourmand experience we just relaxed a little in the restaurant. The setting is perfect for this and the lighting is intimate and makes you want to enjoy your final cup of coffee or wine at your own leisure. The staff was very accommodating and let us have our space to contemplate the evening and all the wonderful flavours to which we had been exposed. We had tasted so many rich and subtle spices, herbs and sauces and we were finally fully satisfied. Whether you live in the neighbourhood or are just passing by, make sure to stop at NOTO Food and People. Here you will be reminded what it means to be fully present and engaged with your meal. It is a great atmosphere to enjoy company and share stories as well, so make sure to invite some friends. In the fast-paced world we live in it is often easy to get caught up in the rush. However, the manner in which we eat inadvertently defines how we approach life. It is important to enjoy the little things and take time to appreciate the food we eat and the people we share it with. This is something Italians have known for quite some time and have thankfully shared with the rest of us. In particular, NOTO Food and People captured this spirit very well. he holiday season is upon us. This is a time for celebration, regardless of culture or costumes, and it is always the perfect time to gather family and friends and spend some special time with our beloved ones. This season brings out the best in us: the kindness, the love and it makes us more caring. Of course, the centre of every reunion is a nice, warm Christmas meal. The children look forward to eating it all year long and the grown ups enjoy planning what is going to be part of the menu each December, or what goodies they are going to bring with them to that party they have been invited to. Society magazine knows the perfect place to get all the treats that are going to make your Christmas celebrations memorable.
They are a foodies’ paradise year round and a visit becomes a MUST, especially during the Christmas season. Both locations are widely known in the Marbella area, mainly due to their wonderful selection of products and their exceptional customer service, and each store has its own personality and purpose. Whilst Delicias de la Huerta is the perfect pantry full of healthy, bio veggies, fruits and gluten free products, Kobe presents the most exquisite and luxurious selection of gourmet goods such as Beluga caviar, truffles and fine meats. Let’s be honest, the 24th and 25th of Decembers are days in which everyone goes “all out” culinarily speaking, and in Kobe and Delicias de la Huerta we can find the “all”.

This is, after all, Christmas in Spain and even if the locals try to enjoy these prime quality products throughout the whole year, during the holiday season they really become an irreplaceable part of every table. But, Kobe offers not just the best of Spanish gastronomy; it also supplies its clients with a wide selection of international gourmet goods. These include traditional English homemade roast beef, Russian caviar and vodka, sea products such as traditional smoked salmon or some very appetising crab legs, delicate foie gras to be served as the perfect appetiser, or the best quality white truffle.
Still, what gives the shop its name, and the product they might be most proud of, is the Kobe meat. It is imported from Japan and it is easy to understand at a glance why this meat is produced with such care and tenderness. `s Christmas
Cheer!
Christmas is a time for children, which is why those innovative and generous people at FOC have decided to do their bit to make the circumstances of disadvantaged children just that little bit more comfortable and enjoyable this festive season – but they also need your help! All you have to do is to buy a gift – however humble – wrap it in the most colourful wrapping paper that you can find, label it with the age and gender of the child for which it would be most suitable and drop in at the FOC Design office in Puerto Banús. It will then be ready to be delivered to a child in an orphanage or a child who has experienced domestic violence. The good folk at FOC will then place them under our tree and organise delivery to the children before Christmas. Hopefully, by joining forces, we can ensure that all of the youngsters of the Costa del Sol have a Christmas to remember, for all the right reasons. Please note FOC’s new address, which is: FOC Design, Centro de Negocios Puerta de Banús, Local 18, Puerto Banús. Opening hours: Monday-Thursday 10:00am-18:00pm Friday 10:00am-17:00pm.

Movie Nights at La Plaza
The weeks around Christmas are often so hectic that it’s difficult to find the time to ease yourself into an appropriate frame of mind. Yes, we know that glühwein often helps, but we’re talking about anticipation here, not public displays of drunkenness!
Wishing you all Health, Wealth &Happiness for 2017
However, when it comes to creating a great Christmas spirit, there’s nothing that hits the spot quite as directly as a good old Christmas movie, so the Puente Romano team has organised a short season of festive films that will turn your, “Bah, humbugs!” into Jingle Bells in no time. These free screenings will take place at Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa at 19:00 on Sunday the 4th, 11th and 18th of December and will consist, respectively, of Tim Burton’s spooky Nightmare Before Christmas, Richard Curtis’s Love Actually and that old seasonal favourite, the Frank Capra classic, It’s A Wonderful Life. As if that wasn’t good enough, you can experience these classic movies with popcorn and mulled wine while snuggling under a blanket. This sounds to us like the perfect opportunity to take a few hours out from the Christmas shopping hassle, bag yourself a comfortable seat and enjoy some old favourites in a gorgeous location. We will see you there! Bulevar Príncipe Alfonso von Hohenlohe, s/n, Tel: +34 952 820 900 hotel@puenteromano.com
