PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Merry Christmas All! Can it really be the end of the year already? It doesn’t seem possible, but it’s true that the shops have been playing Christmas songs for a while and it won’t be long before we’ll be linking arms and singing Auld Lang Syne. In the meantime there’s Christmas to contend with – I hope that you won’t have to be trailing around the shops on Christmas Eve but, if so, I’ll probably see you there! Whatever your reaction to the festive season I hope you agree that we have included something for everyone in our December issue. If you have the problem of not knowing which toys are going to be must-have items, then turn to our guide to 2017’s leading contenders for Toy of the Year. If you can’t keep the ankle-biters happy after reading this, there really is no hope! If you’re a bit of a Christmas refusenik and are thinking of blocking up your chimney so that the cheery old bloke in red can’t snaffle all your booze and mince pies, then we have a treat in store for you. Just look at all the amazing places that you could be spending December the 25th. If you’re just too late to pick up a lastminute deal this year, then some careful planning could mean that you might be spending next Christmas relaxing in the Maldives or somewhere where at least all the conspicuous consumption isn’t quite so conspicuous. At least you’ll be less likely to be inundated by the kind of piped Christmas music that is guaranteed to send you loco at your local supermercado. Talking about Christmas music, this is also the time of year when the entertainment industry goes (in my humble opinion) completely mad in the search for that much coveted Christmas Number

10

One slot. Over the years there have been some surprises (Rage Against the Machine holding off the X Factor winner in 2009), some classics (Slade’s evocative ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’) and, frankly, some shockers (Rolf Harris’s ‘Two Little Boys’ and Mr. Blobby’s eponymous 1993 hit to name but two - and don’t get me started on Alexandra Burke’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’) but, for some reason, all the record companies still seem obsessed with nabbing the Yuletide Number One spot. KJ Elsdon takes a look at the history of Christmas songs, from Bing Crosby’s ‘White Christmas’ to the most recent seasonal hits. If your search for Christmas gifts isn’t restricted by a modest budget then we have plenty of suggestions for how you can best put a smile on the faces of your nearest and dearest, from some stunning pieces of real estate to Ian Kuah’s summation of the brand-new Porsche Cayenne E3, which is the sort of stocking-filler that someone with the wealth of Donald Trump can probably anticipate! Apart from that we catch up with Jonathan Yeadon who claims to be a cross between Scrooge and The Grinch at this time of the year – but we don’t believe a word of it! With relationship advice from Sam Owen (this is a dangerous time of year for couples) and top body training tips from Matt Roberts - just the thing for that postChristmas dinner fug – we have your Christmas all wrapped up for you. Enjoy all those parties. The whole SOCIETY team wishes you a wonderful Christmas and looks forward to seeing you in 2018! ‘Til next time… Andy Clark

Gwen’s a Country Girl at Heart

Ever since calling time on her marriage to Gavin Rossdale in 2015 and taking up with Blake Shelton, her colleague on the American version of The Voice, our cover girl, Gwen Stefani, has discovered the simple joys of country life. In an in-depth interview with Marie Claire magazine she revealed that one of her favourite things is to escape to Shelton’s Oklahoma ranch with her children and her soon-to-be (if the rumours are to be believed) sister-inlaw’s family. “We cook and get muddy and dirty. There are ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles). Being a mother of three boys, it’s kind of the perfect place. Everything is real now, whereas before, things didn’t seem so real,” she said. However, she also revealed that the demise of her marriage didn’t happen without some real soul searching: “What I learned was that my heartbreak was supposed to happen, that it was my purpose to write about and share my story. I met at least 50 to 100 people before each show on my tour and got to hear that my truth and my story translated, and I feel very lucky and honoured knowing that,” she admitted. It looks as though 2018 will be a year of changes and progress for her.

Catherine and Michael’s Anniversary Celebrations

It hasn’t been the most straightforward of marriages, that’s for sure. The whole structure seemed briefly to crumble when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and then he had some very rum ideas about how he contracted throat cancer, but it wasn’t long before they both realised that they were much happier together than apart. After raising two children together, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas took some time out of their busy schedules recently to celebrate their 17th wedding anniversary. ZetaJones referred to Douglas as her “best friend” and, despite the 25-year age difference, the marriage is looking stronger than ever, as she added, “'I'm very blessed. I have a husband who listens to me and I'm a wife who listens to him. That's why - although every marriage goes through its ups and downs, its times of adversity - we've come to a place where we couldn't be better. I have a very healthy husband, a very healthy mother and two vivacious, healthy children. I think after that, everything just falls into place.” We do love a happy ending – especially now we’re entering panto season!

Celebrity Spotlight

Rock on, Gold Dust Woman!

Throughout the course of their lengthy partnership, Fleetwood Mac garnered a reputation as one of the most druggy bands on the circuit and no member of the band took that reputation more seriously than otherworldly vocalist, Stevie Nicks. Having joined the outfit way back in 1975 as part of a package with her then musical and life partner, Lindsey Buckingham it was widely assumed that this was the defining – albeit failed - relationship of her life, but a new biography by Stephen Davis reveals that, in fact, Nicks’s great lost love was in fact…Joe Walsh! Yes, it’s hard for the gossip columnists to believe but Nicks who, even at the age of 69, remains a figure of wild curiosity and fantasy for men of all ages, was once compulsively drawn to the big-hootered Eagles guitarist. Now married to Barbara Bach’s sister Marjorie, Walsh is Ringo Starr’s brother-in-law and often performs with his All-Starr Band. Sadly for Nicks, Walsh’s drug use at the time of their relationship was so impressive that she has been airbrushed out of his memories although, for her, he remains ‘the one that got away’. “There was nothing more important than Joe Walsh. Not my music, not my songs,” revealed Nicks sadly. Stevie, may we just say, forget him – he’s not worth it!

Gone Hollywood

Were you surprised when you heard the news that the Great British Bake Off’s Paul Hollywood’s 20-year marriage had ended? If so, take heart – it seems that it came as a bolt out of the blue to the star baker too. Just as his wife Alex was announcing to all and sundry that their marriage had crumbled under the weight of his infidelity (a serious fling with his American co-presenter Marcela Valladolid and a very public snog with last year’s GBBO winner, Candice Brown), Hollywood was gushing about how wonderful his marriage was in an interview with the Radio Times. If this was an attempt at damage limitation then he appears to be labouring under a massive misapprehension, since the feisty Alex – a former scuba instructor, who Hollywood met when he was a chef at a five-star resort on Cyprus – looks set to take control of a decent sized share of Hollywood’s estimated £10 million empire. Apart from his earnings as a TV judge and presenter he has also launched his own range of bakery products. However, given the success of the Great British Bake Off’s Channel 4 relaunch, it looks as though Hollywood is in line to make another tidy profit for himself.

The Crucible, 21st Century Style

Everyone knows Arthur Miller’s play that focuses on the 17th century Salem witch trials as an analogy for the McCarthy anti-Communist witch hunts of the 1940s and 1950s and now it looks as though we are revisiting the territory. When someone as family friendly as Aled Jones is currently having his collar felt by the BBC for ‘inappropriate behaviour’ you can be sure that we are living in very interesting times. Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey are either ‘in therapy’ or in hiding, Jeffrey Tambor has reportedly resigned from his role in Amazon Prime’s monumentally successful Transparent over similar allegations and now Girls creator, Lena Dunham has been forced to perform a very interesting balancing act with regard to Murray Miller, one of her team of writers who has been accused of rape. Dunham, long thought of as America’s most vocal young feminist, has come under fire for dismissing claimant Aurora Perrineau’s account as “misreporting” and “a lie”. Needless to say, Dunham’s status as the US’s Feminist-in Chief is being questioned by a number of parties and it’s likely that this current crisis will undermine her creative voice for some time.

October means Halloween!

Richardson

gives SOCIETY readers the chance to keep up with her latest exploits.

I love dressing up and this spooky spectacular is the perfect excuse. This year I decided to dress as Poison Ivy, complete with red wig and jewels from the gypsy shrine. After a fully booked day in the salon completing some terrifying make-up and hair it was no stopping for my team who then headed off to the Hotel Puente Romano with ‘Bardou On the Go’ pop-up units. We’re very proud to be working alongside Puente Romano for the second year running, this year being extra special as it was supporting a very worthy charity The Children’s Trust. This fantastic hotel put on a three-course dinner, complete with the cast from the West End show, Wicked and what a spooktacular evening we had!

‘Bardou On the Go’ units are available for all events including weddings, hen parties or events. Please contact us for more information. I’d like to just say a massive thank you to all my team for pulling out all the stops and working so hard, especially Danielle, our head make-up girl, who completed work on clients, staff and the cast of the production and still managed to look drop dead gorgeous as Cleopatra.

Making memories in Marrakech

After such a fun event it was time to unwind with some winter sun and serious R&R, so my family and I headed to beautiful Marrakech. We stayed at the Fairmont Royal Palm Hotel, which was heavenly and possibly the best hotel I’ve visited so far; the suites were huge, complete with double bedrooms, bathrooms and lounges for us and the children and the biggest walk-in closet I’ve ever seen in a hotel. The service was also outstanding and we even had a personal chauffeur to drive us around in our golf buggy! Food and drink was consumed in abundance (not so great for the waistline!) and we chilled out in the Clarins spa and swam in the three swimming pools. We also headed out a few times to enjoy a camel ride – eek! - and to enjoy the wonderful night life, Marrakech didn’t disappoint with its cosmopolitan bars and restaurants, including the Buddha Bar and the rooftop cocktails of the Pearl Hotel and La Mamounia. I’ve already booked a return trip here in March with the girls to enjoy a Sex and the City type experience and hopefully learn some of the sexy belly dancing that we watched!

Girls’ night

Friday nights are made for girls’ nights - the school week is over and a cheeky Cosmo or two is calling! There was absolutely no reason behind this particular girls’ night out, apart from the fact that we’re mums who want to break loose, so La Sala is where we headed to dance to the fabulous live music and sip on cocktails and champagne in the VIP section. Thank you, as always, for looking after us so well, team La Sala.

Praying for Becca

Unfortunately this month hasn’t all been good after hearing some devastating news about Becca Watson, a very close friend of mine. Many of you will know Becca as the larger than life bubbly blonde from the fashion enterprise Bohovalentina, who used to run pop-up shops in Bardou last summer. Sadly, after fighting and overcoming breast cancer Becca has been diagnosed with bone cancer and a brain tumour. We were told that it was terminal and Becca only had a few weeks to live but, in true fighting spirit, she is still going strong. I’ve been helping with some special herbal treatement from an alternative centre in Banús, which we both believe is helping to fight the tumour - in fact the doctors are astounded by the results, so a big ‘thank you’ to them. Please keep your prayers and thoughts with Becca and remember that every day is a blessing.

Saturday at Mosh

Christmas has come to Bardou!

We’re delighted to announce – in the spirit of Christmas – that Bardou is an official drop-off point for the orphanage donations in association with The Boardwalk.

You may know from my column that I’m normally a creature of habit and hang out at Puente Romano. However, it was my friend Debbie’s birthday and she had booked at table at Mosh. I must say I was pleasantly surprised; it has a very cool vibe, a mixture of sexy people and great DJs. I thoroughly enjoyed the Lobster Salad, Sushi and selection of cocktails. The service was outstanding and everyone had a wonderful time dancing the night away with the beautiful people of Marbella.

Masters of the game

Bardou is very pleased to announce that it’s teaming up with La Sala Puerto Banús to organise a special hair and make-up masterclass in conjuction with Fake Bake's new make-up range launch on Thursday the 14th of December. Tickets are only 20€ for the special lunch and 35€ with unlimited cava! We'll also have a fashion show and jewellery demonstration from Pantea Jewellery and a raffle with faboulous surprises (all proceeds are going to the Bardou Foundation). This is an event not to be missed!

Fluttery lashes and back to blonde!

Let’s face it, I’m a blonde; blonde by nature and blonde in personality and, as much as I love changing my hair colour, blonde will always be my love, so it was time to take me back. Luckily, with the help of a lot of Olaplex and my specialist colour technician, Lauren I’m able to change with zero damage to my hair, in fact it’s been in the best condition ever! Our lash specialist, Debbie also gave me a special boost with an LVL lash lift; this is an advanced technique which perms, tints and conditions the lashes for six to eight weeks, so there is no need for lash extensions or even mascara. Now I wake up looking fresh, even after all those cocktails!

Claudia, party planner extraordinaire

Last month I wrote about how we celebrated my youngest daughter, Thalia’s birthday. We all had a great time – little guests and the bigger ones – but I forgot to thank Claudia Rocha de Oliveira, who is the most phenomenal party planner and made sure that this was a party to remember for all the right reasons! If you are thinking about having a bash, she is amazing. Just phone her on 608 541 849.

I’m a Celebrity…?

We all know Christmas is approaching when we hear that famous shriek, “I’m a celebrity – get me out of here!” I absolutely love this show and it is a highlight of many a chilly night for me, but this year I have to say - what a rubbish line-up! Half the celebrities I don’t even know and the other half seem a little on the dull side. What happened to all the hunks in trunks that spice up a cold winter evening? I’m petrified of all things creepy crawly, heights, dark small spaces and water, so would be utterly rubbish but I’m competitive as hell so would give it a good go. I’d like to see myself and ‘Mummy Marbella’ Lina in there, head to head! ITV, we need to make this happen.

Boot season

I have to say, as much as I love the sunshine and strutting around in a bikini, I can’t wait for the colder weather to start so I can start wearing my new winter wardrobe, especially my boots! There’s nothing better after a long hot summer then wrapping up in a cashmere coat and fabulous pair of Louboutin boots. I have a number of pairs waiting, these being my newest and favourite purchase.

The Entertainment Charts

Marbella’s superstar DJs and SOCIETY magazine’s favourite music maestros are here to bring you the hottest and hippest tracks of the month. The Danish duo have selected some banging beats from Pop to RnB and from House to Funk. Aminé - Spicegirl (Hip-Hop)

This guy is full of energy and brings a fresh vibe to the hip-hop scene. This song, along with his past hits 'Caroline' and 'REDMERCEDES' are all feel good weekend tracks, so if you’re about good vibes, definitely check him out!

Famous Dex, A$AP Rocky - Pick It Up (Hip-Hop) There isn’t even a chorus on this song, but the beat is just pure fire. A$AP has a great cameo verse so keep an ear open for that.

Def Loaf - No Fear (Funk)

Funky tune, great vibes and a clean voice. Good music to cruise to as you move from Christmas party to Christmas party this festive season.

WIINSTON - Canada (R&B)

Watch out for this Danish duo. Only two releases in and they are already gaining a lot of fans!

C Tangana - De pie (Dancehall)

Tangana has taken music by storm here in Spain and his album IDOLO is what the country needs at the moment. Don’t miss this track.

Raye - Decline (Pop)

After her summer smash hit 'You Don't Know Me' with Jax Jones, London girl Raye is back with another banger. You may be familiar with the hook, taken from Ja Rule's hit 'Always on Time' back in the 1990s.

Merry Xmas Everybody! By KJ Elsdon

n his popular 1998 novel, About A Boy, author Nick Hornby explains his main protagonist, Will Freeman’s idle and dissolute lifestyle as the result of being able to live the high life on the back of royalties from his father’s enduringly successful Christmas single, written years before. Is it possible that a seasonal song can keep a whole family in beer and skittles for the rest of their lives? When this scenario was questioned by a reader of the UK’s Guardian newspaper, musician Greg Lake felt moved to respond: “In 1975 I wrote and recorded a song called I Believe in Father Christmas, which some Guardian readers may remember and may even own. It was a big hit and still gets played on the radio every year around December, and it appears on more or less every Christmas compilation going. So I can tell you from experience that it’s lovely to get the old royalty cheque around September every year, but on its own the Christmas song money isn’t quite enough to buy my own island in the Caribbean.” Even if it doesn’t guarantee fathomless riches, there is no doubt that any musician who fancies an annual income – however modest – wouldn’t turn down the chance to come up with a Christmas classic. So what is it exactly that turns yuletide musical themes into enduring festive favourites?

DECEMBER HAS A LONG TRADITION OF THROWING UP MORE THAN ITS FAIR SHARE OF MUSICAL MADNESS

One of the older classics, Irving Berlin’s ‘White Christmas’,

was written way back in 1942 and originally formed part of the movie musical Holiday Inn. After first topping the Your Hit Parade chart in October of that year, it has retained a place in our collective hearts and has been recorded by artists as diverse as The Drifters, Elvis Presley, The Supremes, Bob Marley, Boney M, Garth Brooks, Crash Test Dummies, The Moody Blues, Twisted Sister, Girls Aloud and Bryn Terfel. Perhaps it is cynical to suggest that the success of ‘White Christmas’ alerted songwriters to the comparatively easy – and regular – money to be made from writing a tune that could be relied upon to feature on festive playlists, but this nonetheless has proved to be the case. December has a long tradition of throwing up more than its fair share of musical madness, from the battle to secure the coveted Christmas Number One slot to estimating the probable sales of the year’s X Factor single. Of course, there is no golden rule that dictates that the Christmas Number One must contain any reference whatsoever to the festive season; inadvertent party poopers, Rage Against the Machine managed the feat in 2009 with the track ‘Killing in the Name’ after an online group of Simon Cowell refuseniks started a campaign to keep Joe McElderry, that year’s X Factor winner, from the top spot with his cover of Miley Cyrus’s ‘The Climb’. Still, that is hardly in the spirit of Christmas, nor is it typical of the time of year when novelty (Benny Hill’s deathless classic ‘Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West)’ from 1971, for instance) and charity singles (such as Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir’s ‘A Bridge Over You’ in 2015) tend to dominate

and capture the coveted top spot. However, it is interesting to note that the queens of Christmas Number Ones, The Spice Girls, failed to offer the briefest namecheck of the festive season in their three successful tracks, ‘2 Become 1’, ‘Too Much’ and ‘Goodbye’, although the latter did feature a video in which snow and ice were heavily depicted. Songwriters hoping to squeeze out a musical Christmas cracker need to take a deep breath and realise that writing a perennial corker is absolutely no guarantee of a place at the top of the charts. Consider, for instance, the fate of The Pogues’ (featuring Kirsty McColl) ‘Fairytale of New York’. This bittersweet tale of two New York itinerants was named after J.P. Donleavy’s 1973 novel and was the result of a bet made with Elvis Costello, the band’s producer at the time. Costello wagered that the band couldn’t come up with a viable Christmas single which, of course, immediately propelled them into action. Banjo player, Jem Finer came up with a melody and a basic concept, but the song was refined by vocalist, Shane McGowan. Finer later described the process: “I had written two songs complete with tunes, one had a good tune and crap lyrics, the other had the idea for ‘Fairytale’ but the tune was poxy. I gave them both to Shane and he gave it a Broadway melody, and there it was.” There it was indeed. ‘Fairytale of New York’ might have topped VH1’s Greatest Christmas Song Chart three

20

PROBABLY THE CHRISTMAS FAVOURITE THAT HAS ENJOYED THE MOST LONGEVITY – AND HAS UNDERGONE THE MOST CHANGES OVER THE YEARS – IS ‘DO THEY KNOW IT’S CHRISTMAS?

up-tempo feeling. Slade’s ‘Merry Xmas Everybody!’ topped the charts way back in 1973 and is still a playlist staple throughout December. With its namechecking of a traditional family Christmas (“Are you waiting for the family to arrive? Are you sure you’ve got the room to spare inside? Does your granny always tell you that the old songs are the best, then she’s up and rock ‘n’ rollin’ with the rest…”), this is a very different beast to the deconstructionalist approach of Greg Lake’s ‘I Believe in Father Christmas’ or Cliff Richard’s overtly religious ‘Mistletoe and Wine’ and ‘Saviour’s Day’.

times but, in terms of actual measurable success, the song was kept off the top of the official UK chart on its release in 1987 by the Pet Shop Boys’ upbeat remake of ‘Always on My Mind’. Yet its unique combination of sentimentality and cynicism was guaranteed to appeal to the sensibilities of British and Irish listeners and it retains its popularity, being one of the most liberally played songs over the Christmas period. Perhaps due to its acknowledgement that this is not always an idyllically happy time and that arguments and hardships can banjax our best plans, there is little doubt that ‘Fairytale of New York’ will be considered a classic for some time to come.

Often considered its twin is Wizzard’s childlike ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’; also released for the first time in 1973 it equals Slade’s song with visions of a traditional Christmas and ends with children’s voices singing the main theme until it fades into silence. Parents throughout the decades have doubtless shuddered at the thought of every day being Christmas, but possibly a slug of glühwein too many persuaded Roy Wood – the musical wizard behind Wizzard – to have another bite of the seasonal cherry in 2000 when he teamed up with Mike Batt. The mission was to weld ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’ with Batt’s 1974 Number Two hit ‘Wombling Merry Christmas’ and the result managed to

reach Number 22 in the UK charts. Probably the Christmas favourite that has enjoyed the most longevity – and has undergone the most changes over the years – is ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ Written way back in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for the victims of an appalling Ethiopian famine and featuring a glittering roster of musical stars (including Bono, Boy George, Sting, Phil Collins and Paul Weller) performing under the umbrella of Band Aid, it effortlessly made the Christmas Number One slot in that year and was remade in 1989, when Band Aid II reworked it and, yet again, grabbed the festive Number One slot. Cheekily, Geldof and Ure decided to give it yet another outing in 2004 to mark the 20th anniversary of its first release and, again, it seized the top spot with contemporary artists such as Neil Hannon, Dizzee Rascal, Natasha Bedingfield, Beverley Knight, Chris Martin, Joss Stone, Katie Melua, Snow Patrol and Turin Brakes adding their star power.

However, some of the most hardwearing Christmas songs completely omit the ambivalence of The Pogues’ offering and prefer to opt for a wholeheartedly old-fashioned

with

Ultimately, there is a Christmas song for all seasons: children have loved indulgently silly novelty records like The Scaffold’s ‘Lily the Pink’, ‘Mr. Blobby’ by Mr. Blobby and Bob the Builder’s ‘Can We Fix It?’ for decades, while mainstream bands have cleverly adapted standard tracks to offer a Christmas feel – East 17’s ‘Stay Another Day’ is an excellent example of this – but few artists have been so willing to offer an alternative view of the season as Greg Lake. His 1975 release, ‘I Believe in Father Christmas’ failed to make the Number One slot but claims that this was because it lacked the immediate festive appeal of Slade’s and Wizzard’s 1973 hits must be invalidated by the fact that it was beaten into the runner-up position by Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, a brilliant composition, but not one exactly bursting seasonal references.

Christmas Number Ones

As Lake later said, “I got beaten by one of the greatest records ever made. I would’ve been p****d off if I’d been beaten by Cliff Richard.” What makes ‘I Believe in Father Christmas’ possibly the most compelling Christmas song of all time – eclipsing even the drunken fighting and namecalling of ‘Fairytale of New York’ – is the combination of the recurring theme of the recognisable ‘Troika’ theme from Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé Suite coupled with lyrics by Lake and Pete Sinfield that contrast the wonder of a child’s feelings about Christmas with the growing cynicism of adulthood. “I remember one Christmas morning, a winter’s light and a distant choir and the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell and eyes full of tinsel and fire” is set against, “They sold me a dream of Christmas, they sold me a Silent Night, they told me a fairy story ‘til I believed in the Israelite and I believed in Father Christmas and I looked to the skies with excited eyes, ‘til I woke with a yawn in the first light of dawn and I saw him and through his disguise”. Far from Roy Wood’s wish that every day could be Christmas Day, Lake and Sinfield’s message is rather more complex: “I wish you a hopeful Christmas, I wish you a brave New Year, all anguish, pain and sadness leave your heart and let your road be clear. They said there’ll be snow at Christmas, they said there’ll be peace on Earth. Hallelujah Noel, be it heaven or hell, the Christmas we get we deserve.” With 2017 marking a time in which the world seems in more turmoil than usual, this is a message that will doubtless resonate even more powerfully.

The Grea t Escape from Christmas

There are those who love Christmas, people who are indifferent and then there are those who really don’t like it one bit. Everyone has personal reasons for their antipathy towards the festive season, which is pretty much unavoidable from November onwards in Spain as the shops fill with decorations and gifts, and advertising in every medium is swamped with Christmas adverts. It can be very wearying, especially when social media posters who are enchanted by the festival tell you there are only so many ‘sleeps’ until Christmas. And these are grown-ups! If you want to ignore the 25th December completely, there is an answer – escape to a place where it isn’t celebrated. With that in mind, here are some suggestions for Christmas-free destinations. It isn’t too late to book now.

24

Laos It’s a Communist state with a very small Christian population, so you won’t find much interest in the festival here. You might encounter some celebrations in Vientiane and Luang Prabang, two of its major cities, but they will be subtle rather than in your face. Laos is poor compared to neighbouring Vietnam and Thailand and has lower numbers of tourists. This is a bonus as there will be fewer places trying to cater to Western tourists with some form of Christmassy activities . Head to Luang Prabang and spend the end of December contemplating Buddhist temples rather than leftover turkey.

Moroc c o

It is right on our doorstep and has for some time been a popular choice for a Christmas week holiday, because it’s a Muslim country. Book a riad in Marrakech and after you have explored all the souks, head up into the Atlas Mountains for horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking. You won’t hear any jingle bells here.

25

The Ma ldives If a luxury holiday in the sun is what you’re looking for then The Maldives might fit the bill. This is a Muslim country, so Christmas isn’t high on the agenda. You will find that some of the resorts will get in the festive spirit to please their Western customers, but you can just head to the beach, lie on a sun lounger, sip a cocktail and pretend that Christmas belongs to another universe. The overwater bungalows at the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort and Spa will provide endless pampering and prepare you for an energetic start to 2018.

Tha iland From November to February is the best time to visit this stunning country, because the humidity levels drop. It’s also an ideal vacation place when you want to rest, relax and enjoy some Thai spa treatments. Most Thais are Buddhist or Hindu, so it is unlikely that you’ll encounter too much in the way of the traditional Christmas trimmings. You might find some in Bangkok, but if you head to the islands you should be able to avoid any trace of Christmas.

Japan This is another country that isn’t Christian, which makes it a safe zone for those of you who are escaping. Avoid Tokyo and Osaka, where you might find the commercial elements of Christmas on display in the shops. However, even if you do see some tinsel looming at you, you can be reassured that in Japan, the 25th December is just a normal day. If there are any celebrations, they will be on Christmas Eve. As with some of the other countries on the ‘Great Escape’ list – stay away from cities if you want to be totally festivities-free. Mountain resorts with hot springs are a good pick and there is skiing in Japan as well, providing that all the snow doesn’t make you think that Santa might be coming.

Well, those are the top picks for the Great Escape from Christmas. Alternatively, you can just close the door, turn off the phone, watch box sets and plough through a box of chocolates and the tipple of your choice. It’s a cheaper solution for sure, but be prepared to stay in there until 6th January, or you’ll find Christmas is still lurking, waiting to pounce on you.

The Guinness Book of Records 2018

What would Christmas be without this wonderfully attractive and accessible account of the world’s most impressive and – let’s be honest, folks – weirdest achievements? With more than 3,000 new and updated records and 1,000 eye-popping photos, it has thousands of new stats and facts and dazzling new features. Go on a whirlwind tour of the planet's most amazing places, from the largest swamps to the deepest points on Earth. You'll also find all your favourite records and categories such as Big Stuff, Collections, Mass Participation and Fun with Food, plus the year's most significant sporting achievements. The editors have also taken inspiration this year from the world of superheroes - both fictional and real-world so look out for the feature chapter charting your favourite caped crusaders in comic books, TV shows and movies.

Private Eye Annual 2017

Feeling a bit cynical and battered by the events of this year? Not to worry – Ian Hislop and his merry band of satirists are on hand to make even the potentially world threatening stand-off between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump seem like a huge joke. Packed with the year’s best cartoons, ‘news’ clips and sarcastic retellings of world events, this annual is sure to be a huge hit with the cynic in your life and is a reliable stocking filler. Miss this yearly repository of the best kind of fake news at your peril!

TV tmas Chris rs e Crack

It’s that time of year again, folks! No doubt the TV channels will be striving to outdo each other in the battle to attract the most viewers. However, here is our pick of the best festive TV.

Doctor Who What would Christmas Day be without turkey, sprouts, roasties that Grandma could break her false teeth on and Doctor Who? This episode promises to be memorable for a number of reasons, not least because it will be Peter Capaldi’s final outing as the titular timelord before he regenerates into Jodie Whittaker. At the time of writing Twice Upon a Time is still a closely guarded secret, but fans can look forward to three Doctors (Capaldi, Whittaker and William Hartnell lookalike, David Bradley) while Pearl Mackie will make her final appearance as assistant Bill Potts. Whovian showrunner Steven Moffat has chosen to write this, his final episode, as he will be replaced by Chris (“Broadchurch”) Chibnall in 2018. We can only wonder what the new Who will look like?

The League of Gentlemen Eric, Ernie & Me If you’re of a certain age and British you will doubtless recall that for some years The z-Morecambe & Wise Christmas Show was a guaranteed seasonal hit, attracting millions of viewers every year. The pressure of ensuring that it was always brilliantly funny, it was said, ultimately led to Eric Morecambe’s heart problems. However, the man who shouldered most of the responsibility for its success was the reliably excellent writer, Eddie Braben – the “Me” of the title. It was thanks to his wonderful scripts that Eric and Ernie were able to develop their unique comic personae and keep the punters coming back for more. This biopic features Mark Bonnar as Eric, Neil Maskell as Ernie and Stephen Tompkinson as Eddie Braben.

A Yuletide revival of this much quoted (“This is a local shop for local people!”) sitcom will be heaven for those who happen to share the nightmarish sense of humour of TLoG creators Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith and Jeremy Dyson. We have been promised three episodes over the Christmas period, so no doubt we will be enjoying more humorous horror from the inhabitants of Royston Vasey. Reboots can often tarnish sterling reputations, but something tells me that the quality control instituted by the team will ensure that this will be a welcome return from some old friends – or should that be fiends?

The

‘Most Wanted’ Toys for Christmas

L

ondon is home to one of the most famous toyshops in the world. It is called Hamleys and you’ll find its store on Regent Street, which is also the thoroughfare that people flock to for its Christmas lights that are traditionally switched on by a celebrity. Every year Hamleys announces its list of the Top 10 toys and games for Christmas, which is usually swiftly followed by parents battling (in some cases literally) to obtain one at least one of them for their offspring. This is Hamleys list for 2017 – some of the brands have been favourites for decades and it is nice to see they are still going strong. Anyway, be prepared to empty your coffers!

30

2017

Tyler the Tiger

It’s a cuddly toy, something that is always a favourite with the very young (and not so young). However, this one is interactive; it makes noises and responds when you talk to it. It has at least 100 sound and movement combinations, including closing its eyes when you stroke its head. Suitable for children over the age of four. Cost £135/€152

Nerf Nitro Longshot Fisherprice Dance and Beat Bo

Nerf guns were big last year and apparently they are still popular. This new version includes a blaster, a longjump ramp, two foam cars with plastic wheels and a set of obstacles so that kids can challenge each other. Cost £50/€56

This is for very young children and will be another top seller. Press his tummy, or the buttons on his feet and he sings songs and dance moves that children can copy. It also teaches kids, numbers, letters colours and more. Cost £33/€37

Power Rangers Movie-Ultra Movie Megazord

Luvabella Doll

This doll is predicted to be the ‘must have’ toy of 2017 and most likely the absolute top seller. It responds to human interaction with noises and movements. She can play peek-a-boo, reacts to tickling and spoonfeeding. She even comes with her own cuddly toy to play with. This is the toy most likely to sell out before Christmas, so if you know it is on your child’s wish list, buy it right now! Cost £100/€112

Hatchimals Egg Surprise

These were a top seller last year and it seems their popularity hasn’t gone away. However, the manufacturers have decided to make them even more exciting by making the toy not only bigger, it now ‘hatches’ twins. One twin has all the moves, while the other can repeat what you say. Again, you need to get in early for this toy, because sales are going to be huge! Cost £75/€85.

Lego BB-8

Power Rangers is another franchise that is still going strong and this Megazord character has expandable wings, a cannon and sword plus battle and flight sounds. It comes with five mini cockpits for the mini figures of the Power Rangers. Cost £60/€67

There had to be something from Lego. This one is from the “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”, which is out in cinemas in December, so expect this to be a big hit. It turns, spins its head and wields a welding torch, just like the character in the film. Only suitable for children aged 10 years and over. Cost £85/€95

Get a Grip Barbie Dreamhorse

Yes, another ‘oldie’ like Lego that is still hitting the toy charts. This is Barbie’s most interactive horse yet and it reacts to touch and sounds, plus it has some 30 realistic reactions and can neigh, walk forward and turn 360 degrees. It can also feed and a bunch of carrots comes with the horse! Cost £90/€101

At last, an actual game! Last year’s big-selling game was Pie Face, but Hamley’s is sure that this year it will be Get A Grip from Hasbro. It’s a twist on the ‘no thumbs’ challenge and players have to complete certain tasks without using those two digits. The game has cards that tell the players what they have to do, such as draw or sculpt. Players win cards when they complete a challenge and the first person to win three cards is the winner. Cost £21/€24

We are Marbella’s

Medical Spa

Medical spas have become more popular in recent years for both men and women; they are a kind of hybrid between the traditional day spa and a medical clinic. Unlike day spas, medical spas are run by a medical doctor, just like in our clinic. At Cirumed Medical Spa we offer treatments ranging from luxury facials to facial thread lifts, Scandinavian sugaring hair removal to botox and filler, facial peels to laser skin resurfacing and plenty of other non-surgical treatments. Our most popular non-surgical treatment is probably CoolSculpting, with over 4000 cycles of experience and the only clinic to dispose of two Zeltiq machines, which halves the treatment time, it’s no wonder we are Spain’s largest coolsculpting practice. The procedure is a clinically proven method that selectively reduces unwanted fat using a patented cooling technology. The CoolSculpting procedure has been cleared by the FDA for cold-assisted lipolysis (breakdown of fat). It works by gently cooling targeted fat cells in the body to induce a natural, controlled elimination of fat cells without affecting the surrounding tissue, and the treated fat cells are gone for good. This non-invasive fat removal technique only takes a mere hour per applicator, but the busy lifestyle of not only our local Marbella patients but also our out of town patients who are only around for a limited time, leads many of them to opt for combining this procedure with our other non-surgical treatments, to make the most of their time. We have many package deals available for patients who wish to maximize the use of their time. What sets our Medical Spa apart from others is our position in also offering plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery carried out by the “Best Aesthetic Surgeon in Spain” (as awarded by Medical Livewire), our director Dr. Alexander Aslani. All of our surgeons are elected and contracted staff at Spain’s largest private healthcare provider, proving the true skill behind their surgical techniques and experience. Our specialty surgery, which our surgeons are experts in, is the Brazilian Butt lift. Commonly known as a “BBL”, it is the ideal Plastic surgery procedure: it removes unwanted fat from one part of the body and uses it for the shaping of tight, perky, round and feminine buttocks. Brazilian butt lift surgery is capable of achieving very impressive body reshaping without much scarring or use of silicone. Cirumed Clinic Marbella is one of very first and few clinics in Europe specializing in Brazilian butt lift surgery. Our surgeons operate hundreds of cases every year, and they are consistently invited to share their experience with this procedure at scientific surgery panels. The combination of all the relaxing, rejuvenating and enhancing treatments offered at our clinic with the outstanding levels of plastic surgery, creates the perfect environment to set up a Medical Spa, in order for us to offer the widest variety of treatments to suit all patients desires and needs.

hampagne corks were popping recently at Cirumed Clinic’s 10th anniversary celebrations. Dr. Alexander Aslani and his wife Jeannine nostalgically recalled how their team, now 26-strong, originally comprised just four members. The Clinic has gone from success to success, ensured in part by the division of specialisations between Dr. Aslani (also of the Department of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Quirónsalud Málaga and Marbella Hospitals) and Jeannine (a surgical nurse and wound specialist). A BRAND NEW OPERATING UNIT FOR CIRUMED The Clinic recently opened a new operating unit, measuring 1,300m2 and boasting two operating theatres, five suites, and the very latest equipment, including two Laminar Flow Systems – a vital concept in contamination control which ensures air moves in one direction and at the same speed, to avoid the crossover of airstreams. The Unit additionally boasts cutting edge tables (which allow Dr. Aslani to rotate patients into the precise position he needs) and two jet towers for water jet liposuction. Patients can relax at the spacious recovery suites, while their loved ones enjoy a cup of Nespresso at the bar, or have a manicure and pedicure.

BUILDING A REPUTATION FOR SPECIALIST SURGERY Dr. Aslani has built a reputation for being the ‘Butt King’: the man those in the know approach for the highly coveted Brazilian Butt Lift (which lifts and adds curve to this area). A second procedure he is famed for is the Bikini Package; in just one operation, patients have a liposuction, Brazilian Butt lift, and breast augmentation. Liposuction is carried out using water jets, which is less invasive than conventional methods and which allows Dr. Aslani to work quicker and more efficiently. Fat obtained from other areas of the body (e.g. the abdomen), can be used to ‘fill in’ spaces in the breast area, complementing implants and creating a more natural look. Fat can also be

Dr. Aslani acknowledges that it seems futuristic to think that a patient can enter the operating theatre and come out with entirely new proportions. “When I first told colleagues I was performing the Bikini Package, they couldn’t believe it. Today, many are doing the same, yet our advantage comes from having performed up to four of these operations every day, for years.” Of course, Cirumed is a leading Clinic in many other types of surgery; Dr. Aslani is backed by renowned surgeons specialising in three areas: Body, Breast, and Facial Surgery. JEANNINE ASLANI AND COOLSCULPTING Jeannine Aslani has made a big effort to establish Cirumed as the leading CoolSculpting centre in the south of Spain. This treatment relies on FDAapproved Zeltiq machines to target stubborn area of fat. There are only six Zeltiq machines in Spain; two of these can be found at Cirumed.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

In case you aren’t familiar with CoolSculpting yet, it is essentially a non-surgical version of liposuction; a lunchtime treatment that lasts about an hour yet results in a loss of volume similar to that obtained through surgery. CoolSculpting can reduce fat in areas such as the hips, tummy and back, though it can target everything from chubby knees to double chins. “Patients usually just play on their mobiles or chat on Facebook while having the treatment… afterwards, many return to work,” says Jeannine, highlighting the non-invasive nature of this effective treatment.

IT’S ALL IN THE FACE: ANTI-AGEING LASER TREATMENTS AND MORE Whether pigmentation, wrinkles, flaccidity or dullness is your problem, Cirumed has the technology and know-how to deal with it. Some of the most popular anti-ageing/rejuvenation treatments include Fraxel and Fractora Laser, which target everything from dark spots to scarring. Wrinkles and sunken areas, meanwhile, are filled in with Botox, platelet rich plasma gel therapy, specific fillers, and more. THE FINISHING TOUCHES THAT MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE “Patients can come in for everything from a relaxing facial, right through to a sugar waxing,” smiles Jeannine with characteristic warmth. One beauty treatment that is all the rage is semipermanent makeup for the eyes, lips and eyebrows, as well as for hiding scars or even creating a look of greater hair density on the scalp. If you ever thought that the celebrity eyebrows you always longed for (the ones with the perfect arch and lovely volume) were out of your reach, visit Cirumed and find a long-lasting solution that will frame your face in the perfect way.

The Cirumed team is proud of their achievements over this past decade, and look to the future with the same enthusiasm they had since the day the Clinic first opened. They are driven by the same passion they always had: that of enabling to patients to look into the mirror and find the very best version of themselves. The Cirumed Team would like to wish their clients and friends a Merry Christmas and a Fantastic 2018! Edif. Panorama, Planta baja, Local 2. CN340, km 184, Marbella. Tel: 952 775 346 cirumed.es

Partner Power SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIPS LINKED TO PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Y

our romantic partner can be a source of encouragement or discouragement and, depending on whether they uplift or deflate you, can determine what you achieve in life. New research also suggests that if you have a partner that is supportive, you are more likely to take advantage of opportunities for personal growth that come your way (Feeney et al. 2017). On the other hand, if your partner is not so supportive of you in your relationship, you are more likely to forgo opportunities for personal growth. In this study, 163 married couples who had been married on average 9.68 years and romantically involved for an average of 12 years, were divided into two roles, where one was given a decision-making role and the other, unbeknown to either of them, was observed for their role

38

in supporting their spouse during the decision-making process. The ‘decisionmaker’ was given the choice to accept the potentially challenging opportunity of giving a speech and compete for a prize worth up to $200 or decline it in favour of the non-challenging opportunity of solving a very simple puzzle for no external reward. The researchers found that those with a supportive spouse – as determined via questionnaires and secret cameras – were more likely to take advantage of the potentially challenging opportunity. The researchers also found that those who had supportive partners and had opted for the challenging task during the first phase of the study, also reported more personal growth, mental well-being and better relationship experiences six months later than those who had opted for the simple puzzle task.

Clearly, your choice of partner can influence your personal growth via the way in which he or she supports or hinders your decision making when it comes to important choices that will help you to develop yourself as a person, increase your skills, achieve goals and develop your self-image. As demonstrated by the research, and as one would expect, how you personally develop over time is integral to how happy you will feel and this will inevitably impact the quality of your marriage or partnership. Do you have a partner that helps you to believe in yourself and encourages you to take on challenges that help you to develop as a human being or do you

Applying This To Your Romantic Relationship have a partner that keeps you from personal growth? To help you answer this question, allow me to share with you some of the great questions the researchers posed to the participants. The ‘decision-maker’ in the study was asked to describe, in their opinion, the role their partner had played in their decision-making process. Questions like the following were used: 1. To what extent did your spouse encourage you to pick the speech activity? 2. To what extent did your spouse encourage you to pick the puzzle activity? 3. To what extent did your spouse give you assistance or advice about how to

perform either activity? 4. To what extent did your spouse communicate emotional support? (For example, affection, compassion, understanding, reassurance, compliments, etc.) 5. Overall, how negative, critical, or unsupportive was your spouse during the time you were together before deciding on an activity? 6. To what extent did you ask your spouse to help you decide which activity to pick? You could use questions like the above to consider the role your partner plays in your life by replacing ‘speech activity’ and ‘puzzle activity’ with the real-life choices you have been, or are, faced with. If you answer questions like the above using a scale such as, ‘massively’, ‘moderately’, ‘neither did nor didn’t’, ’not much’ or ‘not at all’, you will begin to notice how encouraging or supportive you perceive your partner to be when it comes to your personal growth.

CLEARLY,YOUR CHOICE OF PARTNER CAN INFLUENCE YOUR PERSONAL GROWTH VIA THE WAY IN WHICH HE OR SHE SUPPORTS OR HINDERS YOUR DECISION MAKING

What’s the Motivation Behind the Behaviour? Now if you want to understand your or your partner’s motives for encouraging/ supporting or not encouraging/ supporting one another in making decisions that lead to the other’s personal development, here are some more questions to mull over. These too have been taken from a questionnaire used in the study. Participants were given the phrase, ‘On occasions when I encourage or support my partner’s goals, I generally do so because…’, followed by 32 motivational reasons that they either rated as ‘strongly agree’, ‘agree’, ‘neither agree nor disagree’, ‘disagree’ or ‘strongly disagree’. The 32 motivations fell under the following categories and the researchers give one example question per category: 1. Avoid Negative Consequences, e.g. ‘My spouse would get angry or withdraw from me.’ 2. Keep Spouse, e.g. ‘My spouse will be more likely to remain in the relationship if I encourage and support him or her.’ 3. Avoid Own Goals, e.g. ‘When I support my spouse, I don’t have to think about my own goals.’ 4. Gain Rewards, e.g. ‘I expect something in return for my encouragement and support later.’ 5. Needy Spouse, e.g. ‘My spouse really needs my encouragement; he or she would be reluctant to do anything otherwise.’ 6. Feel Obligated, e.g. ‘I feel obligated

40

to encourage and support my spouse’s goals; it’s expected of me.’ 7. Enjoy Helping, e.g. ‘I truly enjoy helping my spouse.’ 8. Love Spouse, e.g. ‘I love my spouse.’ 9. Connect With Spouse, e.g. ‘It helps me to stay connected to my spouse.’ 10. Make Spouse Feel Good, e.g. ‘I want my spouse to feel good about himself or herself.’ 11. Makes Me Feel Good, e.g. ‘It makes me feel good about myself when I help my spouse.’ Several categories were classed as relatively selfish motives (i.e., avoid negative consequences, keep spouse, avoid own goals, gain rewards, feel obligated), and the other categories were classed as relatively altruistic motives (i.e., love spouse, enjoy helping, connect with spouse, make spouse feel good, makes me feel good).

YOU MUSTN’T BE AFRAID OF FINDING OUT THE REAL ANSWERS TO THOSE QUESTIONS THAT YOU KEEP PUSHING AWAY TO THE BACK OF YOUR MIND

You can answer the above 11 questions to establish your motives for supporting or not supporting your spouse or you can think about what sort of answers your partner might give based on any patterns you’ve noticed in your relationship. If your motives and those you suppose your partner would give, seem to fall under the ‘relatively altruistic’ categories, you’re likely in a happy, healthy relationship where you allow each other to grow and flourish. If on the other hand, one or both of you works to ‘relatively selfish motives’, your relationship likely needs attention because you will be holding one another back in some way, either hindering personal development, psychological well-being and/or relationship quality. One thing I always say to clients is that you mustn’t be afraid of finding out the real answers to those questions that you keep pushing away to the back of your mind. Bring those questions to the forefront, answer them now and deal with them now, with or without professional help from someone like myself, because otherwise those questions will pop back at some point demanding that you address them and that ‘some point’ is better now than five, ten or twenty years down the line when so much more of your life has passed you by. If you seek those answers now, you might be able to fix the underlying issues now and go on to have a fulfilling, happy life together and if you’re not meant to be together, you’ve just saved yourself time you’ll never get back and that is priceless.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

ACHIEVING YOUR IDEAL BODY SHAPE PT.3 This month I’m going to move away from the upper body and offer some tips to help build the muscles in the front of the upper leg, also known as the quadriceps or quads for short. Key exercises to include in your programme for maximal growth of the quads are: Matt Roberts is the UK’s leading fitness trainer. He has also written several bestselling books on the subject and worked with celebrity clients such as Tom Ford, Amanda Holden, Trudi Styler, Michael McIntyre, John Galliano, Mel C and The Saturdays. He also acts as a fitness expert for BBC Radio 2, BBC Breakfast, Sky News and frequently writes and runs seasonal promotions for The Times, The Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph.

SQUATS MIGHT SOUND LIKE AN OBVIOUS CHOICE BUT THERE’S NO ESCAPING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SQUATTING IF YOUR GOAL IS TO BUILD THE QUADS. HOWEVER, THE TYPE OF SQUAT EXERCISE YOU CHOOSE (THERE ARE LOADS!) WILL ALSO PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN HOW EFFECTIVE THEY ARE FOR THIS SPECIFIC GOAL.'

• SQUATS this might sound like an obvious choice but there’s no escaping the effectiveness of squatting if your goal is to build the quads. However, the type of squat exercise you choose (there are loads!) will also play an important role in how effective they are for this specific goal. Many people will picture the barbell back squat when someone mentions this exercise and, despite being a great option for lots of recreational exercises, this isn’t a great place to start. During the squatting movement, the quads are maximally activated during deep knee flexion i.e. the lowest point of the movement. Having a barbell on your shoulders can often make getting to this position difficult as it places higher demands on ankle, hip, and shoulder mobility (the main areas where lots of people have mobility limitations). As a result, form and range of motion is compromised and the exercise becomes less effective. Bearing this in mind, a better choice for most recreational exercisers is the goblet squat. Holding a dumbbell or kettlebell at chest height will allow for a much fuller range of motion (think elbows to thighs) and thus give you the hit on the quads that you’re looking for. By all means progress to the barbell back squat eventually, just make sure you have built the right foundation first.

Bonus tip: elevating the heels slightly will also help to increase activation of the quads.

42

• BULGARIAN SPLIT SQUATS (also known as rear foot elevated split squats) – this is a great unilateral option for building the quads that will help to even out any left to right differences in size and strength. I like to set people up from the ground up with this one, as it helps to stay in a good position for the whole set. Start by resting one foot on a box or bench behind you and bring the knee on that side down to the ground. The other foot should be out in front of you with the knee slightly ahead of the ankle joint. In this position, you should feel a good stretch in the quads of the back leg and your knee, hip and shoulder should all be in vertical alignment. If the stretch is too much you can flex at the hips slightly. From this kneeling position, push into the ground with the front foot and drive the body upwards until the front knee is extended. Then lower yourself back down to the start position, initiating the next rep just before the knee touches the ground. You can load this exercise with dumbbells held at your sides.

Bon a sligh us tip : tly na rro stanc e from wer to ba front c achie k will help t o ve a b on the igger hit quad s.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

• THE PETERSON STEP-UP This is an exercise that can catch you off guard at first because it doesn’t look like much and it’s best performed using just bodyweight. However, when you use as it as a high repetition finisher to your leg workout it’s a tough but great way to build the vastus medialis oblique muscle (the teardrop shaped muscle around the knee). Using a low step (approximately eight to 10 inches high) stand so one foot is on the step and the other is hanging over the edge with the toes pulled up towards you.

Move onto the ball of the standing foot and bend the knee so it tracks forward over the toes (be mindful that knee doesn’t bend inwards towards the midline of the body). As you move down, the heel of the hanging leg should eventually contact the floor. When this happens push through the ball of the stance foot and return to the start position. Avoid pushing off the floor with the hanging leg and let the stance leg do all the work.

onc Bonus t e star this e ip : t x s e to f incr ee rcise e of t ase th l easy e h tha e step heig h na ddi rathe t ng r loa d.

For the first two exercises, you can use the same rep and set scheme as last week which is shown below: Week 1 - 3x8 (72reps/session, 144reps/ week) Week 2 - 3x 10 (90reps/session, 180reps/week) Week 3 – 3x12 (108reps/session, 216reps/week) Week 4 (deload week), 2x10 (60reps/ session, 120reps/week). Then repeat the cycle for the next four weeks, aiming to add small increases to the weights used (don’t miss any reps though!) Aim to include these exercises into your training schedule twice each week. For the Peterson step-ups complete 2-3 sets of 12-15 reps at the end of your leg session.

BONUS NUTRITIONAL TIP Building muscle inevitably means you need to eat more calories. This is because your body needs more energy when it’s faced with demanding exercise than when it’s at rest. But it’s important to get the balance right between training days and non-training days. You don’t want to underfeed when you need fuel for recovery and growth and you don’t want to overfeed when you’re inactive. This often leads to two unwanted results - fat gain and muscle loss. Instead, aim to eat a little more on training days and a little less on rest days. Here are some general guidelines: training day = 3000kcal, non-training day = 2500kcal.

ts' I Christmas! This month Jonathan shares his love of the festive season, the scent of Christmas and Gerry!

I DID take a few down halfway through the year though, as I had been informed you could see my house from Mars.

Enough to send me crackers

I am also rather a fan of Yankee Candles. Last December my apartment smelt like a church, and I don’t mean dry rot, more along the lines of frankincense and myrrh. I am still not entirely sure why the three wise men took those to Mary; maybe they knew she would be having guests and wanted the stable to smell nice? I mean, I totally understand the gift of gold, because Christmas is an expensive time of year.

Call me Scrooge, but truthfully Christmas isn’t my favourite time of year. I like the elves, I like Santa and the idea of him coming down the chimney and, of course, the peace on earth, and goodwill to men idea but, to be honest, I feel it’s like communism. In other words, a great idea in theory but, as proven by the rather large land mass to the east of us, it doesn't work in practice. If that fellow in North Korea asks, it was Gerry who said that and not me. Speaking of Gerry, he is the total opposite and looks forward to this time of year with glee. From about October he won’t talk about anything else. Why? The Christmas work party of course. Every year Gerry plies me with alcohol (AKA truth serum), gets me pissed and I tell him secrets. I supply him with a smattering of gossip which normally keeps him going to September the following year. I’m waiting for the day he turns up with some kind of recording device.

Keeping up with tradition

Those of you who know me well will know that I am rather partial to tradition, one of those being Christmas cards. I have recently been sent the minutes from a couple of British card manufacturers’ AGMs and, apparently, without me they would be recording massive losses. I was rather touched I have to say. I also think I am going to the Royal Mail’s Xmas do this year. I swear that the women at the Correos in El Corte Inglés starts salivating when she sees me in the queue because you could purchase a small island in the Caribbean for what I spend on postage. The thought of disappearing into my storage area to extract my tree and all its décor leaves me cold. On the 1st of December, I will take a deep breath and set to work. Mind you I have saved myself some hardship this year by leaving my lights up all year round - I just couldn’t be arsed to take them down.

Keep calm and carry on

I keep looking at the salon appointment book and breaking out in a cold sweat. You don’t need a calculator to work out that too many clients and not enough hours isn’t going to work. But I will survive, as I have done the last 29 Christmases as a hairdresser. You get less for murder! If anyone wants to get me something for Xmas I would like a life, please. I hear they are very popular. I see other people having them and I think I would quite like one. I am definitely feeling more and more like Cinderella, in certain lights I could pass for Buttons but don’t even get me started on the Ugly Sisters!

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

I just want to see his hair in person, so I can see exactly how that work of art is put together, because whoever is looking after his hair would be better off using their talents on basket weaving.

Help is at hand

As you know my dear friend Kara is once again running the Costa Christmas Collections. She collects newly wrapped presents for children in orphanages all over Málaga and Alhaurín and children affected by domestic violence. It gives me great pride that Reflections is one of her designated drop off points.

New in

We are now stocking the Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger range. It smells bloody gorgeous and the tangy, invigorating scent lingers throughout the day. I am loving the gentle sulphate-free shampoo Mirrorsmooth €25,60, which performs especially well on weak and coloured hair—it helps prevent fading and keeps even chemically treated strands looking shiny and healthy.

Must Have Product For Xmas Redken High Rise Volume Duo Volumiser €22,40a unique gel-cream volumising treatment styler for fine/flat hair combining the power of two styling. It works on every hair strand to create a visually fuller effect.

I am blessed to have many extremely generous clients who give me the most amazing gifts over the holidays. Some people say I could open a bar for New Year - I think not because that lot is what gets me through the holiday period! I have also received some rather unusual gifts over the years. I was once given a signed football; do any of you see what I have in common with a football? Another client gave me a framed photograph of her dog. I will never be sure if it was meant for me and you can’t ask, can you? Now if any of my clients really know how to pull strings, a meeting with Mr. Trump is on my Christmas wish list - in the interests of world peace, of course.

Affixed to some of the best cocktail dresses you’ll see this season, look out for feather trims and light detailing to take hold of the trend. If you want to inject some more quill power, add to bag feather mini-skirts or bralets.

The Gold Dress You’re going to see a swarm of gold dresses, as sequins are set to be massive this season. Go for classic beige and gold options like Dominique and get up close and personal with contrasting accessories, statement cuffs and hoop earrings to put a new spin on your standard LGD (Little Gold Dress).

The Floral Boots If you’ve packed away your floral items, you need to get them back out – asap. Yes, florals are actually a thing for autumn and the party season. Whether they’re printed on delicate chiffon fabric or hand-stitched on embellished boots, if you’re delving into some print this season, make it floral. Keep it fresh by turning to dark florals and, if you need a cover-up, a faux fur jacket will keep it sweet while a biker jacket will toughen up the look. Sorted!

Solvilla & Antima sell another stunning villa We attended…

The fabulous open house party hosted by Antima and Solvilla to showcase their latest project – the stunning Villa Yolanda.

We admired..

The layout and style of this villa, which has all the hallmarks of style and elegance we have come to expect from Antima and their partners. Along with the other guests, we loved the old tree that has remained to become a key feature of the villa’s garden. The squash/ basketball court, the table tennis and the infinity pool plus the views over the golf course and to La Concha make this an even more exclusive property.

We rubbed shoulders with…

A ‘Who’s Who’ of Marbella’s real estate whilst enjoying the canapés and refreshing beverages and exploring the Scandinavian interior design that is as always, cool, clean and collected.

Congratulations and a big thank you to…

The teams at Antima and Solvilla for organising the party and showing us such a wonderful property. We hear Villa Yolanda has already been sold, so even more congratulations to all of you.

Crown Estates open doors to luxury villa We attended…

Crown Estate’s party to celebrate the launch of a newly renovated luxury villa in La Carolina. The property is in close proximity to both the Marbella Club Hotel and the Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa on Marbella’s Golden Mile, one of the most desirable addresses on the coast. Kasper Borregaard-Otzen, CEO of Crown Estates, gave us a great tour of the property and explained the evolution of the project.

We admired…

The work that had been done on the six-bedroom, six-bathroom, three-storey villa, which is 750m2 built and sits on an amazing 2,600m2 plot. The entrance is incredibly impressive and we loved the huge terraces, plus each bathroom was designed in a different style.

We enjoyed…

The fantastic canapés provided by Wellerfors Catering and the open bar, as well as the live music form Mr. Thierry Luce., who sang classics and some latest hits.

Congtratulations and a big thanks to…

The Crown Estates team. You can view this villa for yourself by visiting the Crown Estates’ office in the Puente Romano, where they have more fabulous homes to show you.

his white-walled, Mediterranean, but architecturally contemporary, development is the first Crystal Lagoon built in Europe for the exclusive use of Alcazaba Lagoon residents. The man-made lagoon covers 1,4 hectares and has a significant advantage over natural lakes in that the quality of the water and its cleanliness never changes. Add to this the fact that you have beautifully maintained sandy beaches, plus floating pontoons for watercraft and you have an ideal beach environment. It is also a haven for owners who are water sport fans, providing they are the unpowered kind, so no water skiing. However, kayaking, paddle surfboarding,

windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing are all possible. Plus, there are three enclosed swimming pool areas dotted around the lagoon. The Crystal Lagoon is also more environmentally friendly than a swimming pool, say the developers. It uses ultrasound technology as part of its sustainable water treatment and a hundred times fewer chemicals than in the average pool. It also uses only two per cent of the energy that is required to power a typical swimming pool system. The company that designed the Crystal Lagoon concept will be maintaining the quality of the water and the environment on a permanent basis, which should

reassure owners, because these people are the best equipped to do the job well. The lagoon is also surrounded by a walkway where residents can enjoy walking, cycling or running while taking in the surrounding scenery. There are sun deck areas around the lagoon as well and zones for beach sports, plus showers and changing rooms alongside other communal facilities. And then there are the properties. The imaginative developers and architects have gone to great lengths to create a magical paradise with beautifully laid out exotic gardens. The buildings are all south-facing to provide maximum

ALCAZABA LAGOON OFFERS A SUPERIOR RESIDENTIAL EXPERIENCE. ambient light and the sparkling white exteriors are truly eye-catching. They have also thought about the concept of community and for that reason they have created small groups of residences. These are nestled among the swaying palms, tropical plants and pools, to create a green Mediterranean ecosystem and adds a boutique feel to the development. The privacy, yet neighbourly proximity of smaller blocks signals a new vision of the Costa del Sol lifestyle and one that is sure to appeal to buyers who cherish a sense of exclusivity. Overall, Alcazaba Lagoon offers a superior residential experience. The living spaces are airy and light-filled with well-designed layouts that will appeal to the discerning owner who favours

contemporary design. The indoor areas flow seamlessly into the outdoor terraces, which are of an ample size and therefore add an extra dimension to a more relaxed style of living. Every residence has its own storage room, underground garage space for

cars and buggies and the blocks are all fitted with lifts. There is cooling air conditioning and central heating for the colder months. The complex seeks to be environmentally friendly where possible, which is why solar panels provide the hot water supply. The finishes in all the apartments and the fully equipped kitchens are top quality. Satellite television is available to the entire community, which means residents do not have to waste valuable time trying to sort out a service. The first phase of this innovative development comprising 100 units, and there really isn’t anywhere else like it in southern Spain, is already sold out. However, construction of the New Phase (78 units) has already started, so buyers still have an opportunity to purchase in this fantastic complex. The inland location is perfectly situated for the airports at Gibraltar and Málaga, with motorway providing a fast link to both. Golfers will find that they have a fantastic selection of courses to choose from and that Valderrama, one of Europe’s top courses is within a short drive. Sotogrande’s marina, polo club and assorted high end restaurants and boutiques are also nearby. Residents will also find international schools and healthcare facilities close to hand. And for those who love the mountains, there are many places to visit in the vicinity including the artists’ colony in Gaucín and the popular Jimena de la Frontera, as well as the traditional white village of Casares itself. t’s that time again. Suddenly the air is crisper, you notice the darkness falling much earlier than usual and there is that indescribable smell in the air. People roam the streets with rosy cheeks and contentedness plain for all to see on their faces. Children run and scream with joy in their hearts. Inside fires are lit and candles dance gently, families revelling in the happiness that comes each year with the season. Decorations are hung with care, a reminder that we are all celebrating something together, whether we know our neighbours or not. A robin lands on the window and tilts its head quietly, admiring the spectacle indoors.

We’re cold one minute and sweating the next and find ourselves questioning whether it’s the manmade fabric, early onset menopause or some other terrible affliction if you are male. The sound of children screeching inspires violence and the thought of fighting past a sea of armpits and coughing, spluttering shoppers to spend your wages on plastic that people may want but don’t need is frankly terrifying. So why do we helplessly fall into the last-minute-madness of Christmas each year? Many people are having

Rockett St George wallpaper knows how much thought you put into it and how much you were thinking of them when you did it. Humans are inherently programmed to care about each other and possessing sympathy and empathy is what makes us so unique and advanced as a species. Possessing it is one thing but acting on it is another. We all feel sad when we witness someone else’s sadness and if it’s someone close to us we put an arm around them and offer them some kind words. If it’s a stranger, we will probably do the same thing. If it’s on the TV - whether documentary or drama - we probably cry because we feel their pain almost as if it were ours. We know what it’s like and we relate to it instantly because at some point we too have felt pain rip through us and would not wish it on anyone. It’s the same with giving, it’s not the object but the act that warms people’s hearts and no, this article is not sponsored by Amazon. There is research to back it up too - new studies suggest that not only does giving contribute to those experiencing it first-hand, but whole communities too. Research also suggests that giving to others is good for our health and can speed up the healing process dramatically

for those who are ill or injured. The feeling of gratitude experienced when something is given is very humbling, when all these positive feelings are evoked it’s no wonder that the act of giving is thoroughly contagious. It doesn’t even have to be a thing; you can give advice, comfort, a helping hand and even your time, just to listen and be there for somebody who needs it. We are all familiar with the gut wrenching advert for the Salvation Army reminding us how many elderly people are alone at Christmas, due to not having family who will visit or not having any family at all. It’s easy to focus on our little bubble and making sure we have the perfect Christmas (for some families this means everything going smoothly without arguments/people flouncing out of rooms/things being thrown) but we also have a responsibility as humans. The same humans who cry when someone else cries, or laugh when someone else laughs. To remember people who have nobody and who expect nothing - but who might just cry with joy if they are remembered.

THE THIRD GENERATION CAYENNE LEAVES ITS COMPETITION IN THE DUST

D

efying all its detractors, the first generation Cayenne sold 270,000 copies between 2002 and 2010. Its replacement, which did not look significantly different, sold 500,000 copies by the time production ceased earlier this year. Thus, Porsche sold a total of 770,000 of its first two generations of Cayenne over 15 years, which is seriously impressive for a big, expensive, premium SUV. To put this in perspective, the original VW Beetle, a cheap people’s car, sold 21.5 million units over 65 years! The third generation Cayenne, internally known as E3, with its predecessors naturally enough being the E1 and E2, once again looks similar to the untrained eye. However, although an engineer told me that the new car hardly has even a single bolt in common with the previous model, it is clear that the strong family resemblance is critical for loyal customers, as Porsche well knows from its iconic 911 range. While the first two Cayenne models shared their platform with the VW Touareg, the new car is built on the VW Group’s big car MLB platform, which it shares with the Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga. The tape measure says it is 63mm longer, 23mm wider and 9mm lower than before, while space utilisation is improved by a moveable rear seatback that can give the boot an extra 100 litres capacity, for a total of 770 litres.

101

TORQUE TALK

A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE TO THE LATEST CAYENNE’S FOOTWEAR COMES WITH THE MOVE TO WIDER REAR WHEELS AND TYRES, PUTTING THE FLAGSHIP PORSCHE SUV ON THE SAME HANDLING AND GRIP IDEOLOGY PAGE AS ITS SPORTS CAR SISTERS. If the familiar exterior causes you to look two or even three times when the latest Cayenne drives past, the radical changes in its fresh new cabin are immediately apparent. Simpler, more modern, and definitely more elegant than before, the cabin architecture is built around the fully networked Porsche Communication Management system interfaced via the big 12.3-inch touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard, and the two 7.0-inch displays in the instrument cluster. Other state-of-the-art electronic features are online navigation, LTE telephone module, intelligent online voice control, a wi-fi hotspot, Porsche Connect services and four USB ports. Porsche told us that while diesel and hybrid models will join the range next year, the early cars off the production line will be powered by the V6 and V8 petrol engines. Dispensing their output through a new eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission, all the engines benefit from forced aspiration, with their turbocharger units sited in the Vee of the engines. The entry-level Cayenne is powered by a 2,995cc single turbo V6 producing 340hp between 5,300 and 6,400rpm, along with 450Nm of torque from a low 1,340 rpm until 5,300rpm.

102

While the new Cayenne is lighter than before, the weight saving varies according to the model. At 1,985kg, the entry-level car is 55kg lighter than its equivalent predecessor, which means it is the first ever Cayenne to tip the scales at under two tonnes. The Cayenne S is 65kg lighter than before, while the new Turbo saves but 10kg. The reason for this weight saving disparity across the range is as follows. While the new Cayenne structure is significantly lighter thanks to its 40% aluminium content plus lightweight high strength steels, the extra standard equipment that has been added to each variant brings the weight back up to the homologated figures. In this vein, the flagship Turbo model benefits the most from additional comfort and performance systems and is thus the heaviest. With 0-100km/h coming up in 6.2 sec (5.9 sec Sport Plus), 160km/h in 14.1 sec (13.8 sec with Sport Plus) and a 245km/h top speed, the basic Cayenne is quick rather than rapid. If we were to fast rewind to the 1980s, any sporting car that could reach 160km/h (100mph) under 20 seconds was considered rapid. That shows how much faster the cars of today are in general. The twin-turbocharged 2.9 litre (2,894cc) V6 that powers the Cayenne S makes a healthy 440hp between 5,700 and 6,600rpm, underpinned by 550Nm of torque from 1,800 to 5,500rpm.

It thrusts this 2,020kg SUV to 100km/h in just 5.2 sec (4.9 sec with Sport Plus), and to 160km/h (100mph) in 11.6 sec (11.3 sec with Sport Plus). Top speed is pegged at 265km/h (165mph), which is going some for a full-size SUV. Fuel economy? Like all manufacturers claimed economy numbers, real world driving with stop lights, random traffic, and occasional full throttle work to reach highway speeds from an on ramp or an overtake simply skews the official figures. Thus, while Porsche claim a combined average of 9.2 L/100km (25 mpg US), my cross-country blast with some highway driving thrown in returned an indicated 11.7 L/100km (20.1 mpg US) average according to the trip computer. The marketing bods say that Porsche has put more sports car into the Cayenne’s chassis dynamics, but that is a bit of a stretch as there is simply no way that any big SUV can defy the laws of physics in this way. However, a significant change to the latest Cayenne’s footwear comes with the move to wider rear wheels and tyres, putting the flagship Porsche SUV on the same handling and grip ideology page as its sports car sisters. The narrow, twisty, and occasionally bumpy mountain road part of our test route would be a challenge for any car let alone one of the Cayenne’s bulk, but the rear steering, which can turn the rear wheels up to three degrees, really came into its own here, effectively shortening the wheelbase for greater low speed agility.

TORQUE TALK

FUEL ECONOMY? LIKE ALL MANUFACTURERS CLAIMED ECONOMY NUMBERS, REAL WORLD DRIVING WITH STOP LIGHTS, RANDOM TRAFFIC, AND OCCASIONAL FULL THROTTLE WORK TO REACH HIGHWAY SPEEDS FROM AN ON RAMP OR AN OVERTAKE SIMPLY SKEWS THE OFFICIAL FIGURES.

The counterpoint is that at high speeds, the system turns the rear wheels in the same direction as the fronts making the wheelbase effectively ‘longer’ and thus more stable. At town speeds that increased agility was really put to the test as we negotiated narrow streets in small villages on the Greek

island of Crete, sometimes having to squeeze past parked cars and oncoming traffic. The Cayenne S has enough power and torque to cover ground rapidly with minimal effort. But this is a Porsche, and power and good chassis dynamics is only part of the story.

A convincingly inspirational soundtrack is another significant part, and the here the bi-turbo V6 gives off a lovely howl under hard acceleration. The counterpoint is restful cruising when you back off to a light throttle, and at a 130km/h cruise the engine is but a whisper in the distance.

103

TORQUE TALK

Also thanks to the supportive seats, which come with the option of heating and fan cooling, front seat comfort over distance is a foregone conclusion. The same goes for rear seat passengers who have ample head and legroom. Meanwhile, the large and well-insulated cabin allows you to best experience the fine detail resolution and sound staging of the flagship Burmester audio system that sits above the Bose system. Cayenne Turbo. Those two magic words have become a legend in their own time, immediately conjuring up an image of the fastest, most performance orientated production full size SUV money can buy. You can only top it by adding the ‘S’ suffix, and Porsche say that this model will be along in the fullness of time. By the time I had got half a mile down the road it was clear that the twin-turbo V8 motor gives the Cayenne Turbo a completely different feel from its sixcylinder brethren. Even before you bury the throttle in the carpet for the first time, the Turbo sounds and feels exactly how a flagship Cayenne should - loud, proud and grown up.

104

TORQUE TALK

ALL PORSCHE CARS HAVE GOOD BRAKES AND THE CAYENNE IS NO EXCEPTION. AS USUAL THE BASIC STOPPERS ARE STEEL WITH THE PCCB CERAMIC BRAKES AT THE TOP END.

As before, even if you are just ambling along at town speeds, the extra weight in the nose gives the car a subjectively greater feeling of heft and purpose. With the V8 burbling away the new Turbo talks the talk, but can it walk the walk like its glorious forbearers? Having even more grunt than before is a good start, and the 3,996cc bi-turbo V8 develops a rousing 550hp between 5,750 and 6,000rpm, with a stump pulling 770Nm of torque between 1,960 and 4,500rpm. This puts the Turbo on another plane altogether from the V6-powered models. Its 0-100km/h time of 4.1 sec (3.9 sec with Sport Plus) and 0-160km/h in 9.4 sec (9.2 sec with Sport Plus) make it junior league supercar fast, even if the 286km/h (178mph) top speed falls a bit short, but only by about 14km/h. In a 2,175kg SUV this is downright bombastic performance, and the Turbo can even show its four tailpipes to the latest 991.2 Carrera. A rapid cross country drive in the Cayenne Turbo quickly makes you realise that those wider rear wheels and tyres are not just there for show. More than once, I felt the back end wiggle when I deployed the full might of the V8 powerhouse in a low

106

gear on a dry road. Despite the clever 4WD system always hunting for optimum traction it was clear that the tidal wave of turbocharged torque at low revs was able to momentarily overcome the mechanical grip of the huge Pirellis. For the experienced driver that means fun in the bends. On the deserted hill roads where I had a good line of sight, I trail braked into the bends to settle the nose and felt the rear steering help the nose chase the apex into some tight bends. Then, to my initial surprise I found that by using plenty of throttle past the apex, I could encourage power oversteer on the way out. The Turbo is the drivers’ car of the Cayenne range without a doubt, and the additional mechanical and aerodynamic systems that Porsche has devised to extend the cars dynamic envelope bear this out. Porsche use three-chamber air suspension on both the latest Cayenne and Panamera to deliver a wider performance envelope in terms of ride comfort on the one hand, and handling and grip on the other. The basic Cayenne still has steel suspension, while the S model has steel springs with PASM as standard.

TORQUE TALK

The steel suspension does not have a self-levelling facility, even as an option. The Turbo has air suspension standard with 48-volt motor controlled active anti-roll bars as an option. The V6 cars can have air suspension as a cost option. However, you cannot change the laws of physics, and there is no getting away from the fact that the Cayenne is a much taller vehicle with a higher centre of gravity that needs to resist roll. This is dealt with by the aforementioned optional active anti-roll bars whose potential 1,200 Nm (885 lb ft) of twist comes from electric motors powered by the partial 48-volt electrical system. High-speed stability is vital in such a tall vehicle, and the Turbo comes with an active rear rooftop spoiler that stays flush in ECO mode for its optimum drag coefficient of 0.35. Over 160km/h the spoiler automatically rises into its performance position to reduce lift over the rear axle. In Sport Plus mode that angle becomes 12.6 degrees. If you have the Panorama glass roof open, the spoiler automatically rises to an angle of 19.9 degrees to compensate for the airflow disruption and the heterodyning effect of air turbulence reaching the cabin.

When you brake hard over 170km/h the rear spoiler instantly rises to its full extent of 28.2 degrees to act as an air brake that also helps the self levelling air suspension limit forward weight transfer. In braking tests from 250km/h, this function reduces the stopping distance by up to two metres. The wheel and tyre sizes range from 8.5J and 9.5J x 19-inch with 255/55ZR19 and 275/50ZR19 tyres on the V6 cars, to 9.5J and 11.0J x 21-inch with 285/40ZR21 and 315/35ZR21 tyres on the Turbo. With this big spread in mind I set out to compare the ride quality of the Cayenne S on its basic 19-inch and optional 20-inch wheels, and then the Turbo, with its standard 21-inch footwear. I was surprised to find that there was a lot less in it than you would think, which shows how well the chassis engineers and their tyre suppliers have done their calibration work. However, the extra mechanical grip of the larger and wider rubber, as well as their better looks is indisputable. All Porsche cars have good brakes and the Cayenne is no exception. As usual the basic stoppers are steel with the PCCB ceramic brakes at the top end.

Now, for the first time in the industry Porsche are offering an intermediate solution in the form of a new technology called PSCB (Porsche Surface Coated Brake). The combination of a new tungsten carbide coating technology for the grey cast iron vented discs with matching brake pads, the PSCB system is said to significantly improve component longevity and reduce brake dust. However, when I spoke to the engineer in charge I was disappointed to learn that unlike PCCB, PSCB does not actually improve stopping performance. Given that its cost is halfway to the PCCB system, which does improve braking performance and reduces unsprung weight, I would go for PCCB every time and chalk it up on the leasing contract. The new PSCB brakes are standard on the Turbo, so this is a question that only Cayenne and S buyers will have to consider. While the Turbo is the drivers’ car of the bunch, the S probably strikes the best overall balance for most people. By raising its game in terms of ride, handling, refinement, and overall efficiency, Porsche’s new Cayenne consolidates and builds on the achievements of its forbearers, and once again leaves its class rivals in the dust.

RONEN ZLOTOGOURA - Artist specialising in Hyperrealism and Airbrushing -

Step by Step

OF A HYPERREALISTIC PAINTING

1 2

This collection began in 2012, and due to the meticulous attention to detail in each piece I only produce two or three original Hyperrealistic paintings a year. Having a background in vehicle restoration has honed my skills in colour matching as well as taught me how to work on different metal surfaces. Many people who see the artwork have a hard time believing that it’s actually hand painted so I’ve put together this article explaining the process. They are created on aluminium composite panels which are very lightweight, rigid and can not rust. These panels are sanded to key the surface and primed to give increased adhesion to the paint. Initially the reference photos are chosen and composition planned out. Then the most important elements are sketched in proportionally.

The paint is applied with an airbrush using PPG automotive paint which I’ve found has the highest luminosity. Used by the top brands such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Ducati and Harley Davidson just to name a few, gives me great confidence in it’s longevity. When the overall shape of the car looks accurate I begin thinking about the light source and how it plays with the reflections. Being highly reflective surfaces they mirror the surrounding environment and generate specular highlights and bright spots where the light rays catch the contours.

3

-

The next stage is the most time consuming, which is adding all the minute details literally millimetre by millimetre. This is what gives the painting realism and needs to be carried out precisely in order for the whole piece to be successful. If any line or curve is off, even an untrained eye will be drawn to it. Hence I set a standard right from the start which I consistently maintain throughout the rest of the procedure. It’s a crucial factor and requires much patience as at this stage progress is slow and barely noticeable, but worthwhile in the end.

4

-

Once the artwork is completed and signed it is repeatedly lacquered in a filtered spray booth. When the final coat has cured it is wet sanded with fine emery paper and polished to a glass like finish leaving the artwork beautifully protected. A certificate of authenticity is then applied to the back as a final touch. These make exceptional gifts and if you want to commission a painting be it a portrait, landscape or any ideas you have, feel free to contact me. To view more of my work visit www.zlotogoura.com

Christmas

CRACKERS & CRAPPERS

C

hristmas is traditionally a time of fun and frivolity. It is celebrated throughout the world; not only in Christian countries. In 2003 President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt declared it to be a national holiday, whilst in India with only 2% of the population being Christian, it is similarly celebrated. It took until 1870 for the United States to make a similar declaration, although the State of Alabama did so in 1836. At the same time some Christian countries almost disregard it. In Ethiopia, one of the world’s oldest Christian countries, it is not an important festival, but is usually called “Ganna” after the peculiar hockey-like game played on Christmas afternoons. It may be that the Ethiopians recognise that the origins of the celebration are pagan, and can be traced back to the day of “Deus Sol Invictus” (The Day of the Unconquered Sun) which was celebrated on December 25th, linked to Saturnalia, when servants were permitted to make fun of their masters between December 17th and 23rd. It is also the winter solstice, celebrated as “Yule” by the Germanic people of the north, when celebrations were held to symbolise the cyclical return of the sun.

110

The Christian Church disapproved of such festivities, and so in 350AD Pope Julius I sanitised them by linking them to the birth of Jesus Christ, but many ancient traditions survived, despite the Council of Braga’s banning such traditions in the sixth century. Pagans revered evergreens as symbols of eternal life and rebirth. This is why mistletoe, which remains green and bears fruit during the winter, was held sacred by the Druids and is still found today, although it took until 1510 for the first Christmas tree to appear in Riga.

IN ETHIOPIA, ONE OF THE WORLD’S OLDEST CHRISTIAN COUNTRIES, IT IS NOT AN IMPORTANT FESTIVAL, BUT IS USUALLY CALLED “GANNA” AFTER THE PECULIAR HOCKEYLIKE GAME PLAYED ON CHRISTMAS AFTERNOONS.

Unfortunately, this documented fact puts paid to the lovely tradition whereby the Protestant Reformer Martin Luther (14831546AD) was so struck by the beauty of stars shining through the branches of evergreens that he took one home and decorated it with candles for his children.

Rica, whilst in Argentina we find red and white flowers, again symbolising purity and blood. Food, of course, plays an important part in any festivity. In Ukraine the traditional Christmas Eve supper has twelve courses to symbolise the Twelve Apostles, whilst in South Africa locals feast on the deep fried caterpillars of Emperor moths. Roast turkey made an appearance in Britain only in 1851, despite

Candles on a Christmas tree, of course, constitute a fire hazard, but their place is nowadays usually taken by electric lights, first introduced in 1882 by Edward Johnson, assistant to Thomas Edison, and developed by Ralph Morris in 1895, who got the idea of “winking” from telephone switchboards. The glass baubles originated as apples, placed on trees to remind people of THE “J” SHAPED the Garden of Eden.

CANDIES WHICH ARE ALSO SOMETIMES FOUND ON TREES, HANGING UPSIDE DOWN, SYMBOLISE “J”ESUS CHRIST AND ARE COLOURED RED AND WHITE TO DENOTE PURITY AND SACRIFICE.

The “J” shaped candies which are also sometimes found on trees, hanging upside down, symbolise “J”esus Christ and are coloured red and white to denote purity and sacrifice. Tinsel is often found on such trees. This first appeared in 1610 in Germany where a legend grew that if a spider spun a web on a Christmas tree it turned to silver. This developed from the Polish tradition that it was a spider who spun a web at the birth of Jesus in order to keep the baby warm. Spiders are thus symbols of goodness and prosperity!

It takes Christmas trees roughly fifteen years to grow to a height of about seven feet, and about thirty million are grown annually. Nova Scotia in Canada leads the world in their export. Germany made the first artificial trees, using dyed goose feathers, but such trees have never been able to rival the “General Grant Tree” in King’s Canyon National Park in California, named the “Nation’s Christmas Tree” by Calvin Coolidge in 1926. Reputed to be the third largest tree in the world, it stands at 300 feet tall, and is over 1,600 years old. But whilst the Christmas tree is an important part of Christmas decorations, other plants also figure, quite apart from mistletoe. In Britain, holly and ivy play an important symbolic rôle going back to pagan times. The poinsettia, originating in Mexico, has a brilliant red colour which, like the holly berry, symbolises Christ’s blood. (Its Aztec name is “Cuetlaxochiti” (flower which wilts). Have you tried keeping one?!) Another Mexican custom is to carve Nativity scenes out of large radishes, especially grown for the purpose. The orchid takes pride of place in Costa

its popularity in the United states at Thnksgiving, when it replaced goose (and, in royal households, swan) as the favoured Christmas fare. In Greenland, preparations for Christmas dinner have to start seven months in advance. A seal skin is hollowed out and stuffed with five hundred “auks” (a type of sea bird), feathers and all. It takes that long to ferment, and is then served straight from the skin. It is called “kiviak” (avoid it on a menu!) Meals might well be accompanied by crackers, invented by Tom Smith in 1846, and inspired by the French practice of putting sugared almonds in twists of paper as little gifts. And for tea, what better than a slice of fruit cake? This desirable foodstuff originated in ancient Egypt, where it was considered essential rations for the afterlife! From 1647 to 1660 Christmas was declared illegal in England. The Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell felt that it was immoral to hold festivities on one of the holiest days of the Christian year. What would he have made of the Catalonian custom, of “El Caganer”; the cheeky figure of Catalan navitivy scenes. This is a gnome-like figurine, who wears the traditional Catalan ‘barretina’ (red beret) and has his trousers down, his backside bare and is defecating. The origins of this custom are a bit murky, but apparently the Caganer has been dropping his britches to ‘fertilize the earth’ since the middle of the 19th century at least. Currently, President Trump is a star!

e f i l r o f s A pet i tmas! hris

rC o f t s u j not

A pet is often on children’s lists of wished for Christmas gifts. It may seem like a great idea at the time, but all too often those highly desired puppies and kittens are abandoned, because the child and perhaps other family members realise that keeping an animal requires dedication, and in the case of puppies hard work. The RSPCA in the UK reported that the number of animals abandoned before New Year 2017 was around 600 and it gets higher in the summer months, perhaps because the novelty has truly worn off by then.

YOU WOULD BE GIVING THE ANIMALS AND THE VOLUNTEERS WHO RUN THESE CENTRES A REALLY HAPPY CHRISTMAS IF YOU GIVE ONE OF THEIR DOGS OR CATS A FOREVER HOME.

Also, Christmas is busy and often noisy in a home, which can make it difficult for an animal to settle in, so it might be better to wait until you have time to focus on settling the pet in calmly and giving it plenty of attention. Don’t forget that fostering is also an option and a great way to help a dog transition from living in a shelter to being in a home environment. ADOPT DON’T SHOP! Finally, if you are considering getting a pet at this time of year, please ‘adopt don’t shop’. Spain and Gibraltar’s animal rescue centres have wonderful dogs and cats all looking for a new home. You would be giving the animals and the volunteers who run these centres a really Happy Christmas if you give one of their dogs or cats a forever home. And please don’t forget that donations are always welcome.

WE’VE PUT TOGETHER A BRIEF GUIDE TO THE RESCUE CENTRES ON THE COSTA DEL SOL AND IN GIBRALTAR TO HELP YOU FIND A PET – AT ANY TIME OF YEAR.

ADANA Dog Shelter Estepona ADANA (Association for the Rights of Abandoned Animals) is an animal charity on the Costa del Sol run by volunteers. Its aims are to promote love and affection for animals, to provide facilities for the shelter and care of abandoned, sick and injured dogs whilst seeking new homes for them and to assist the local authorities with such animals. ADANA never puts down a healthy animal. Adana operates a dog shelter on property owned by the local government and run by ADANA employees and volunteers. For donations and to look at the available dogs visit adana.es Tel: 952 113 467 or email adoptions@ adana.es Triple A Marbella-San Pedro Triple A is mostly run by volunteers, dedicated to help and care for the abandoned and abused animals in Marbella and San Pedro Alcántara area. Triple A gives them love, shelter, medical care, and tries to find new homes for them so that they can have a second change for a happy life. It does not receive any finance from the Central or Regional Government. Marbella Town Hall helps Triple A with a small amount of money and the electricity bill. It only survives by membership fees, donations, sponsors and organising events, etc. For donations and to look at the available dogs visit tripleamarbella.org Tel: 952 771 586 or email info@ tripleamarbella.org Last Chance Animal Rescue Based in the Málaga region, the mission of this charity is to find loving forever homes for the huge number of abandoned animals coming into the El Paraiso perrera (pound). As with many charity organisations, it does not receive any government funding and rely entirely on donations and fund raising events. It takes dogs and cats both from people handing them in and those found roaming the streets. It can house many hundreds of dogs at one time but

with the current economic climate, it has found the numbers coming in far exceed those which they can rehome. For donations and to look at the available dogs visit lastchanceanimalrescue.es Tel: 633 320 313 Spanish Stray Cats The local government facility for stray and abandoned cats only has a contractual requirement to keep cats for 10 days. Cats may be kept longer, but only if the facilities do not become overcrowded. We are a charity that works hard to find homes for these animals, this helps to keep the numbers of cats in the pound at a level whereby they are given a much more reasonable time period for rehoming. Every cat/ kitten we home frees up another space in the pound, this in turn gives another cat a chance. For donations and to look at the available dogs visit spanishstraycats. org or contact it via Facebook Spanish Stray Cats. You can also email spanishstraycats@hotmail.co.uk Animals in Need Foundation / Adopt a Rescue Dog Gibraltar Animals In Need Foundation and Adopt a Rescue Dog Gibraltar are non-profit organisation that finds homes for abandoned dogs at the Prodean Animal Shelter in La Linea and the surrounding areas throughout southern Spain. For donations and to look at the available dogs visit ainf.gi or on Facebook – Adopt a Rescue Dog Gibraltar. Pitstaff Rescue Europe PitStaff Rescue Europe works to save Pitbulls, Staffys and other similar type dogs from extreme situations such as abuse or abandonment in Spain. We remove dogs from death row and give them the treatment they deserve until they are adopted out here and in Europe. SHELTER PRESIDENT JAILED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY Carmen Marin has become the first person in Spain to be jailed for animal cruelty. She ran the animal shelter for cats and dogs in Torremolinos, which was supposed to have a ‘zero sacrifice’ policy. However, in 2016, it was discovered that Marin had slaughtered thousands of animals between 2008 and 2010, and that she had performed the euthanasia herself. The judge at Málaga’s court said in his statement that Marin had injected the animals with euthanasia drugs “without any veterinary control or form of sedation, using inadequate methods and lower does than recommended, causing prolonged agony.” Marin made money from the killings, as the town council paid her every time she took in a new animal. It is also alleged that she and her two daughters used animal shelter money to fund a lavish lifestyle.

New Zealander, Michael Campbell, moved to Marbella with his family when he retired from golf. He is best known for winning both the U.S. Open and the HSBC World Match Play Championships in 2005 and has clocked up 15 professional wins over the period of his career. The Heights held a launch party in October, which was attended by many stars and agents from the world of football, as well as the Mayor of Estepona. The luxury villas are perfectly located for golf fans as they have uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean and sit frontline on the 4th, 5th and 9th holes of La Resina golf course.

MUSIC IS THE ANSWER This month Spanish singer/songwriter and model Brisa Fenoy is releasing her hotly anticipated new single JERICÓ which tackles the controversial subject of immigration in Southern Spain. Brisa, 26, was born and raised in Algeciras and now splits her time between her family home in Algeciras and Madrid. She began songwriting aged 12 and went onto be signed by Universal Music. Her latest single is about a subject which is very close to her heart. “Having spent most of my life in Algeciras, I have always been aware of the problem”, Brisa explains. “Asylum seekers and migrants continually arrive by sea to the Spanish shores, where they can then be held for long periods of time by the authorities in extremely poor conditions. My father being an activist and with many migrants attending my school and social activities it wasn’t long before I realised something was seriously wrong. As a child I couldn't understand why my life was so different from theirs; I lived in a nice home and had so many possibilities available to me, yet some of the children I went to school with didn't have a home to call their own.’’ “As I got older and began write my own music, I knew I wanted to do more than just write meaningless lyrics. It is my art, and my dream has always been to use it to make a difference. I want to use my music as a way to send a message to the younger generations in a fresh, modern way so they can relate to it and hopefully actually listen to what I have to say. Many people try to spread awareness of social issues through media such as indie films or alternative music, but I believe it can be done in a new way. Mainstream music CAN be used as a powerful tool to talk about sensitive subjects and convey important messages to the youth of today. It can still have an edge to it, the musician doesn’t need to lose his or her identity or change their style - the opposite in

120

fact. By creating contemporary music alongside high fashion artistic videos, it will attract the attention of young people and hopefully give them insight into the reality of the problem.” With the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean to Spain increasing every year, the situation is just going to continue to get worse. The route is deadly and 119 people died at sea this year so far, 49 people perished in July in a single incident. “I want to increase the pressure on Spanish authorities to improve the conditions at the ports for the migrants arriving by sea and ensure that they have effective access to information and legal advice. Many take to the sea as a last resort after being victims of violence and other abuse at the Moroccan boarder. Most migrants are actively discouraged from applying for asylum, while many are not even given this option. The authorities fail to treat them with humanity and dignity.” Brisa wanted to highlight the plight of real migrants in her music video and contacted Barrio de Todos in her hometown. They put her in touch with different nationalities who had migrated to Spain and were trying to make a new life for themselves. “They all had such courageous, inspiring stories to tell and were eager to be involved with the project. I cannot thank them enough for being brave enough to share it with the world.” For the visually stunning Jericó music video Brisa teamed up again with the talented, award-winning producer and director duo, Manfre & Iker Iturria of HUMANPRODUCE, “We loved both the proposal and the theme,” recalls Manfe. “Both Brisa and our team were concerned about finding the right balance between social criticism, the rawness of real archive

images that deal with the issues of borders, and aesthetics. 'Jericó' focuses on the drama of the migration crisis that takes place along the Straits of Gibraltar. One of our goals is to raise awareness among the thousands of young people who follow Brisa, but we wanted to do it in a modern way. The video clip will be accompanied by the testimonies of all the young migrants who have participated in this project. We believe we have managed to create something that gets the message across in a way which will be remembered. We are very grateful to all the young migrants who collaborated with us.”

Jericó will be available to download from iTunes, Amazon and Spotify from 15th December. Keep updated at www.brisafenoy.com and via her social media accounts.
