EMILY BLUNT in the

RETURN OF

MARY POPPINS

BY ANNA GERLACH

This Christmas our favourite Disney nanny, Mary Poppins, returns - this time though, actress Emily Blunt will be taking over the role that made Julie Andrews famous in the original 1964 film. With direction by Rob Marshall and screenplay by David Magee, the trailer gives us that Christmas feeling and a glimpse of Blunt singing one of the new songs — and the classic, ’supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’. With this year marking Disney’s 90th anniversary it seemed the perfect opportunity to explore what’s been happening behind the scenes and tell you why Emily Blunt is the perfect casting for "Mary Poppins Returns"!

et in London, 25 years after the events of the original film, the highly anticipated sequel shows Mary Poppins helping the next generation of the Banks family after they experience a tragic personal loss. Mary revisits Jane and her brother Michael, who is now the proud father of three: Anabel (Pixie Davies), Georgie (Joel Dawson), and John (Nathanael Saleh). The American musical fantasy film follows a storyline that will ensure the sequel boasts the same magical elements. Disney summarized it as:

"In depression-era London, a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael's three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following

"I love that Mary Poppins is vain and stylish and into herself; it was enjoyable to sashay around in Sandy Powell's creations." As for her take on the role, she said, "I needed to try to pay homage to Julie Andrews, but carve out a new space for myself— and we were very loyal to the books."

a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their THE AMERICAN lives." Last year, BritishAmerican actress Emily Blunt mentioned to E! News that she actually has character traits just like Mary:

This is a sequel of the original movie, so we shouldn’t be expecting the same kind of story. Blunt differs from Julie Andrew’s role back then. While we will definitely get the feel of the original Mary Poppins, Blunt will switch into a more edgier, rougher role

as instead of being inspired by newer versions of Disney’s productions, Emily focused more on the original Mary Poppins books where the character had slightly more strict, rigorous characteristics. She unveiled to the media:

"We were loyal to the books. I think she's a little more acerbic and vein and weird in the books and we went that direction a little more." It you have read the original books written by P.L. Travers you will be ready for the more assertive, authoritative and tough Mary Poppins set to hit our screens. However the love, magic and fun musicality are all still there to remind us why we fell in love with this character all those years ago.

Going to storage and looking through boxes and boxes of stuff we had all saved over the years and then seeing it all compiled into a book was a very satisfying project. After a remarkable time in showbiz, winning endless awards and with many famous fans (including the Queen of England), what do you have planned next? Jackie: There are so many great memories, but when I was able to join my brothers on the all stadium Victory Tour again - that was really special.

In June 2019, it will be 10 years since your brother Michael Jackson passed away. How are you all dealing with this now, a decade later?

Jackie: Losing both, my brother Michael and my father has been very hard. Jackie, tell us the story of how you formed the band in the very beginning! Jackie: We were performing in local talent shows, just Tito, Jermaine and I, and a guy named Raynard Jones. From there, after winning so many shows, the band started to form. Over the years many bands have split and gone their separate ways. Besides being a family, what kept you all together?

Jackie: It's still very hard. It only softens when I'm on stage singing the songs we recorded together. In 1979 you went on your first big world tour! Right after a performance you did back then you told the media how excited you were. Are you still as excited about touring today? What are the biggest differences between touring in the 70s and now?

PHARRELL "HAPPY" TO NARRATE... WILLIAMS 30

THE GRINCH

I

t’s official. There is a brand new "The Grinch" by Dr. Seuss movie out and we couldn’t be happier! The newest version of 'You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,’ a.k.a the best Christmas movie ever, hit our screens on the 8th of November. If you are between the ages of 6 and 60, this is one not to miss! This animated movie has one spectacular, perhaps surprising narrator starring in the main role of the Grinch himself: Hip Hop and Pop legend Pharrell Williams. The Grammy Award winning Williams already composed the score and original songs for all three films in the 'Despicable Me' series and has played an important role in Illumination, racking up three of the eight top animated films of all time, with Illumination’s films earning more than $5.8 billion worldwide in the company’s 11-year run. THIS ANIMATED MOVIE HAS ONE SPECTACULAR, PERHAPS SURPRISING NARRATOR STARRING IN THE MAIN ROLE OF THE GRINCH HIMSELF: HIP HOP AND POP LEGEND PHARRELL WILLIAMS. But Mr. Busy is also included in further big projects, as he is currently designing a capsule collection for Chanel, which will debut on March 29th. Plus Pharrell is involved in Swan and Bar Bevy, his restaurant-and-bar partnership with David Grutman and that’s not all. He is now set to open his own gastronomy complex in the Design District of Miami. YOU CAN ALREADY IMAGINE THERE WILL BE A LOT OF SARCASM AND THE BEST KIND OF IRONY POSSIBLE IN AN ANIMATED MOVIE.

There is certainly a lot more to the master of American Rap music than meets the eye. The trailer begins with the Grinch receiving a wakeup call in the form of his favourite song, which is – of course - "Happy" by Pharrell Williams.

Celebrity Sportlight

Produced by Illumination and Universal Studios, the Grinch perfectly plays his role as the old grumpy Christmas-hater who lives isolated on the top of a mountain with his one and only companion, the dog Max. As this is a movie made by the creators of "Despicable Me", "The Secret Life Of Pie" and "Sing" with a story by Dr. Seuss and a production by Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier, you can already imagine there will be a lot of sarcasm and the best kind of irony possible in an animated movie. PRODUCED BY ILLUMINATION AND UNIVERSAL STUDIOS, THE GRINCH PERFECTLY PLAYS HIS ROLE AS THE OLD GRUMPY CHRISTMASHATER WHO LIVES ISOLATED ON THE TOP OF A MOUNTAIN WITH HIS ONE AND ONLY COMPANION, THE DOG MAX. The storyline will be quite similar to the original version from 1966. In their cave on Mount Crumpet, The Grinch is contemplating how to destroy Christmas for the neighbours of Whoville who celebrate the holidays to the extreme. When the Whos aim to create an even bigger and brighter Christmas than ever before, the disgruntled Grinch realizes there is just one way for him to keep his peace during the celebrations. With Max’s help, the green grumpy, dresses up as Santa Claus to steal Christmas and silence the Whos' holiday cheer once and for all. he story goes that some 2018 years ago, a baby of immaculate conception was born in less than immaculate conditions. Since the local taverns were full and Airbnb was still a ways off, it fell to some goats, a sheep and a couple of donkeys to budge over a bit in welcoming forth the almighty. Stitched up immediately by having his birthday so close to Christmas, Jesus was nevertheless gifted gold by the first of three visitors, indicating a promising start to proceedings. The second fella offered smellies in the form of frankincense. Global trend-setter / international laughing stock America has a lot to answer for. In 2007 it was revealed that despite having just 5% of the world's population, it was consuming 30% of the world's resources (all sorts - not just chicken wings and gunmetal) and contributing 30% of its waste – a large proportion shipped off to become a more immediate third-world problem. A billion dollar industry has recently developed to de-clutter the dwellings of Americans whose houses are statistically twice the size they were in the 70's, hoarding more than twice as much stuff they've become too fat, lazy or apathetic to tackle without first having to pay a stranger to do it for them. The flip side to the gross accumulation of stuff is our throwaway culture. As things break, wear out or simply become unfashionable, we discard them without much thought. If we're going near the charity chop and we can carry it under one arm, it might live again in someone else's hands, but if it's bulky or we can't be arsed to wash it first, hello landfill. It would help if many products weren't patently designed to be replaced regularly enough to keep the cash flowing. It's called “planned obsolescence”. Look at design journals from the 1950s, when consumerism was really taking off and you'll see its inception as a guiding principle of production. Today we'll replace half a cubic metre of plastic desktop computer and monitor because the old inch-square processor which won't load Facebook quick enough is designed to be inaccessible. computer in a heavily polluting factory next to a chemical waste dump. Of course, your new purchase keeps his cousin (doing mere 12 hour stints) in the slightly newer neighbouring factory in a job.... Still, there must be a better way forward. Here's a statistic which should shake you like an angry nun – After six months, the percentage of total material flowing through the North American system of supply and demand still in use is 1%. 99% of material harvested, mined, processed and transported is essentially trash, by-products of production or victims of over-eager consumption, planned and perceived obsolescence (fashion trends and consumer whims). That's simply unsustainable. So what can we do about it? Well, like ex-smokers who've seen the light, we can start by hypocritically preaching - I say hypocritically, because last year I bought an adult friend a pair of children's headphones on his birthday because I knew the expression on the face of a wrestler pictured on the box would make him laugh. I wasn't wrong; he laughed right out the front of the face they were too small to fit round... It probably wasn't worth £12.99 and 500 years of slow-release environmental toxins though. I've since unfriended him as he's a despicable symptom of the problem I'm now preaching against. Obviously there's a whole slew of things you can do to help combat climate catastrophe. It's a dauntingly huge issue and requires a collective desire for change, but since I started this article talking about Christmas, I'll try to limit my final scope to the same. Don't buy those pointless, single-smirk novelty gifts this year. The ones that are already unused clutter by the time tree's gone. Nobody really needs a poo emoji soft-toy or a plastic wobbly-head Queen. The relief of “thank God I found something” and the flash of a smile on your giftee's face don't justify the resources that go into making these items and the exploitation of labour and the earth they represent. If we weren't such tits for tat, there'd be far less around, choking up our environment.

34

Ultimately you can show people you really care (about them and their future on this planet) by getting them sod all. If you're buying them novelty or filler gifts, you're essentially just reminding them you've thought of them, so do that in a cheaper, less pollutive and actually more personal way. Draw them a lovely or hilariously bad (my new tactic) picture, write them a personalised poem (again, lovely or hilariously bad work) or tell them money's particularly tight because your partner's pregnant again - also my new tactic / reality. Alternatively just give them a big hug, tell them you love them, throw this article in their face (it's a form of recycling) and run away. If they're still genuinely offended you didn't spend money and resources on them, fuck 'em - they're not a true friend and they'll have no place on your ark when the flood comes.... stick a plasma telly there instead!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH DIRE STRAITS BASS GUITARIST AND ARTIST JOHN ILLSLEY Last month musical legends and artists Brian Travers from UB40 and John Illsley from Dire Straits exclusively unveiled the artist proofs of their album covers at the Kempinski Hotel Bahía in Estepona. These artworks are part of an exhibition of 20 pieces of the artists’ works, which will be on display at the hotel until the 10th of January 2019. See more from the event on page 122. John Illsley from Dire Straits is also unveiling the artist’s proof of the painting which was featured on his 2008 solo album “Beautiful You”, an oil painting depicting a guitar on an abstract blue and white background. As well as this album cover, John is bringing nine other works, “I’m quite good including two beautiful new abstract at holding things works called Puglia and Headland.

together, which was one of the roles that I played in Dire Straits... I call it the Engine Room. If the engine room is functioning properly, (...) then you can build on top of that very safely

SOCIETY’s collaborator Leandro G.Vega had the opportunity to talk first hand with John Illsley in this exclusive interview, touching on his music career, how his daughters are following in his footsteps and how art has been a part of him since his school days.

Your base showed us just how tight it could lock in with the drummer, and yours certainly drove the rhythm of Dire Straits. In one of my favourite tracks of all time, Romeo and Juliet, you locked the root notes and then chose the perfect moment to drop in with the 3rd. It's as close as you can get to imperfect perfection, but I must ask, where you a bassist-by-proxy and if you could choose one (guitar or base), which would it be? The base is the instrument I’m most comfortable with if I’m playing live, but when I’m writing I use the guitar or the piano. I think when I was quite young I tuned in to the base for some reason with the band, and I think that’s probably instinctual in a way, perhaps it’s just my character, the way you are, the way you relate to things. I’m quite good at holding things together, which was one of the roles that I played in Dire Straits, sort of the foundation, I call it the Engine Room. If the engine room is functioning properly, if the base and the drums are working properly, then you can build on top of that very safely and you haven’t got a problem; if it’s shaky, by the time you get to the end the whole thing falls apart. Do you have any anecdotes that spring out when recalling the creation of Romeo and Juliet? Romeo & Juliet is a curious one. I first heard the initial idea that Mark had in a little sort of studio area I had in my house in south London. Mark would come round, and told me he had this idea for a song, and he started playing the open tuning and I said “that’s interesting”, he started playing it and asked me and I said, “I think that’s pretty darn good!”. Then I started playing the base with it

36

and that’s where the fifth and the third notes started coming in. It came together very quickly as a song. It was a pleasure recording that song because those were the days when you mixed a track, you actually had to physically mix it, move around, pull the plugs, turn that reverb down, that echo up, you were performing. Things are very different now. It’s always been a very special song and I still love playing it now. Jumping forward 23 odd years, and I apologize for this gloomy start, but I have to ask you since I was a little sad to see how your induction to the Hall of Fame (HOF), sort of a US recognition or coronation for a life time of musical achievement and the legacy you have left us, was dampened by the controversy around Marks’ absence and his reasons for not showing up. I recall that you said, when you first heard of your nomination, and prior to you speaking with him, that “it throws more questions than answers”… In retrospect now, seeing how things turned out, is it still that way, has it thrown even more questions, or perhaps laid a few answers? I think we’ve all moved on basically. I have to be careful with my words here talking about the whole HOF because it did throw more questions than answers, for a number of reasons: we were mystified from the start as to why the HOF wanted to get the band together again, especially when they knew what the dynamics were and why other people were being included in that as well. There was also no communication between us and them prior to them making that decision. I’m going to leave it at that: they made a decision, and it really didn’t work for us as a band, so I basically took it upon myself to show up and represent the band and go through with it… And it was an extremely difficult time I can tell you. With all due respect to the members of the HOF, they didn’t really help and I was pretty upset, but I’m over it now. We’ve moved on. The HOF is a massive thing in the US, so you have to respect that, which we tried to do.

Besides all that Jazz of Marks’ absence, what was the Cleveland experience like? Any anecdotes? It’s very difficult to describe the whole event. It’s very difficult to deal with. They have a particular way of doing things and you have to fall with their system. If you don’t, then don’t go. It’s as simple as that. You know what the deal is, you have to grasp it or go home. I was very pleased that Guy and Alan turned up. It’s history now.

When I’m trying to understand painting I see it as a sort of dance between reality and un-reality, abstraction and realism. Do you think that musicians, to be successful, need not be "Guitar George" virtuosos with perfect pitch and melody as long as they are honest (and of course I’m thinking of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and the likes), because ultimately, if the listener doesn’t believe you, you will fail to incite his emotions, and if he doesn’t feel, chances are he won’t buy whatever you’re selling. Do you find this to be so in painting, that there has to be a brutal honesty, a sharing of your soul, "the blues", that ultimately makes the viewer feel something, even if we aren’t all Da Vinci’s or Ella Fitzgerald’s? I think that painting in a sense is the same as music in the respect that you’re communicating something that’s unique, and with painting it's unpredictable, you don’t quite know where it’s going to go. Music has a certain form to it, especially if you’re in a successful band, you’re not following a formula, but you naturally do things in a certain kind of way, and we call it "style". With painting the journey is one with a certain amount of isolation, but you are trying to communicate something which is real, even though it’s abstract. When I’m trying to understand painting I see it as a sort of dance between reality and un-reality, abstraction and realism.

Fame is something I’m not interested in. Success allows you freedom.

Unless it’s photography, art is always a variation on that theme. You are trying to communicate something to somebody else; you’ve got to open the picture up so that somebody else can move into it, so they can see, no matter how abstract or strange it may be, you have to find a way to let them in. If you shut them out, they won’t get it. It’s quite mysterious, I don’t quite know how it works. All I know is you have to be unique, because it’s you, and then you get someone to try to understand what you’re trying to achieve. They may not even know what it’s all about, it doesn’t matter, as long as they feel something. It’s very difficult to explain, I don’t even know it myself, but I know when something works, and I know when something doesn’t. I think. (laughs)) And I guess this is more or less the same question, but do you feel that when an artist no longer feels the angst of his existential condition, when he is content with life, and by no means am I referring to the acquisition of money and fame, since this often only accentuates the suffering, but when they no longer feel the need to “wash away the daily dust from the soul” as Picasso put it, that there is not much else to share and his art becomes anodyne, that it withers into insignificance if you don’t have "the blues". (laughs) I don’t necessarily think that art is suffering. In order to achieve

38

something you are constantly questioning yourself, it’s part of the process. I don’t go into the studio and paint the same thing, I do a series of things and then I move on. Like the guitar series, I did 8 or 9, partly because I was sitting in the studio and there was a guitar there so I said, ok, I’ll paint that. And I ended up doing them all, and now they’re prints, and that’s how it works. I may have gotten slightly away from the

You have been passionate about art since your A levels, put aside by the momentum the success of Dire Straits immersed you in. Since the band dissolved in ’95 you have been painting ever since. Do you find the artistic process to be similar (and if so, in which way), to writing music, as a sort of exorcising of the soul, something that needs to come out that can’t be pinned down or rationalised, a liberation? Or is music more painful, more cerebral?

You’ve got to open the picture up so that somebody else can move into it, so they can see, no matter how abstract or strange it may be, you have to find a way to let them in.

At the moment I do both. I’m just finishing a record now, I’m mixing it next week actually, and my writing has developed with my own song writing. This is my 5th or 6th set of albums, it’s something that I need to do, I still perform my own music. And painting is a different activity all together, it’s a solo experience, cerebral in its own way, often a very spontaneous thing, whereas music isn’t necessarily, music is structured, don’t’ ask me which comes first, the music or the words, it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day you’re fitting a jig-saw puzzle together, there’s a thread to them all. So basically if you hear the new record you’ll understand what I’m trying to say.

question, I think the angst is always going to be there because you’re always trying to move things forward. And there’s a big difference by the way between fame and success. Fame is something I’m not interested in. Success allows you freedom. For instance if I had been a painter from the onset, I seriously doubt I would be here talking to you now. Having been successful at something else has allowed me the indulgence of investigating this wonderful oddity that it art. I’ve been fascinated by it since I was 14 years old. I love looking at pictures and I love painting. Simple as that.

Nowadays, there is a sort of contra current of the YouTube and Instagram generation of musicians, whereby you can make tremendous amounts of money with no recognition or fame, all thanks to the metadata held in online data bases for publishers to pull from and sell to

Hollywood and Netflix. So in a sense, these artists win in that they get to do what they love without the hangover of fame – and by hangover I mean the illusory sense of emptiness once you fall from the top (and that’s inescapable gravitas) and the difficulties of adapting to the real world after that inundation of the ego. I think the difference between success and fame is very relevant here. Fame is something you choose to experience. It’s not something that immediately happens to you. Some people remain successful and don’t need the fame. You can choose to become famous if you want, but it has nothing to do with success. Success gives you freedom to choose. Fame does the opposite, you are no longer free, people are making choices for you and you can’t just walk into the pub unrecognized. I can go anywhere. If David Gilmore, one of the best guitar players in the world, and a great friend of mine, walked in 99% of the people wouldn’t recognize him - perhaps you would - (laughs). Very occasionally someone will start staring at me in the tube and I go (looks down pretending to read a magazine), but it’s very rare, thankfully. Did you find it hard to adapt? Was art a conduit for a smoother transition, or were you glad when the madness finally faded? Not at all. When the band finished, it was a choice Mark and I made, and we made it together, I mean we played to 5 million people, 258 shows that year. That’s a hell of a figure, and after we were emotionally and physically exhausted, we said “we’ve got to stop”. We need to get out and do something different. And art had been calling me back, I went back to school, I went back to the basics, drawing, charcoal. In fact, I still now go to art classes. Unfortunately time moves on very quickly, in fact there’s a song I’ve written on this record, it’s called Double Time, life moves at double time, so you better move on. Your abstract art, almost always oilon-canvas, is quite eclectic and I can see more than one Spanish artists’

found mine, I’m not sure. I’m a very ordered person, but if you come into my studio it’s chaos there, and I think it has to be for there to be spontaneity. How are your daughters (Jessica and DD)? They contributed in the booth for In The Darkness. Are they still singing? Do they support your art career? Jessica is a painter, much better than I, she sings, she’s singing with me on Wednesday in the studio. DD, the younger one, has the voice of an angel, she was singing with me last week. They’re both very involved. NY, London, Sydney, Singapore, Southern France…. Why Marbella? And where will your art take you next?

You can choose to become famous if you want, but it has nothing to do with success. Success gives you freedom to choose. Fame does the opposite, you are no longer free,

Wherever it leads us really. It’s great doing shows with Brian, we complement each other very well, different styles and colour palettes, there’s also a musical affinity which we share, so wherever it may take us really. Do you listen to music whilst you paint? If so, to whom? All the time, from Mozart to ZZ Top, that affects the painting actually, it’s quite interesting. Thank you so much Mr.Illsley! Visit the exhibition at the Kempinski Hotel Bahía in Estepona, until the 10th of January. kempinski.com/estepona

reminiscence in there… Who are the Ry Cooders’, the Robert Johnsons’, Chuck Berry’s or JJ Cales’ of your paintings? I’m very fond of Peter Lanyon, De Kooning, Jasper Johns, Richard Diebenkorn is a favourite of mine… The list is endless, you feed off history, off the chocolate box if you like, and somehow you end up with your own voice, and I don’t quite know how that happens. What inspires your palette? What you’re seeing or what you’re feeling? Or both? It really depends what you’re thinking about at the time. I think my palette is pretty much my palette now, I don’t think I ever pull a colour directly out of the tube.. It’s a bit of a mystery I think. I think I’ve

"So anything that we can do to help, as simple as donating to the many organizations that are collecting supplies, no form of help is too small. Our country is stronger when we come together and we cannot face devastation alone. We must continue to reach out and help each other in these trying times. ustin Bieber’s wife, Hailey Baldwin, (now Hailey Bieber officially on Instagram!) has teamed up with "Pretty Little Thing" as their newest ambassador, and is the star of their new holiday campaign. With glittery, silvercoated jumpsuits, blazers, dresses and more, the collection features a somehow futuristic vibe, but also has a Christmassy character to it. "[It's] definitely party ready," she told ELLE. com. "I really think these are some great sexy pieces to wear for New Year's Eve." What’s special about this particular line is the size inclusivity, with all the metallic pieces running up to a size 22 (US) "I really love where Pretty Little Thing stands in regards to their sizing," Hailey said. "I wish more brands openly embraced all sizes. All women deserve to feel confident and sexy." Also, the collection features tomboyish, sex-genderless pieces, such as oversized blazers: "I love an oversized men's blazer," she said. "There is something so empowering about wearing an oversized men's piece. Especially when I'm trying to be a boss."

However, now the newlywed is also thinking about creating her own line: "I have so many ideas, and I'm really into trends and am pretty in tune with what people my age are wearing and like to wear," she said. "Right now I'm having a great time wearing other peoples' designs. There are so many young talented designers out there, but who knows? Maybe one day in the future."

Besides the slug on her plate, Oliver explains in his book that the Queen’s notes are formerly there to provide excellent satisfaction when it comes to serving their guests, saying that if a guest doesn’t like what’s being served, the monarch "will make a discreet note for future reference.”

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Hi my name is Clare Navas and I’m the founder of TLE. We produce a luxurious range of organic hemp based products here in Andalucía. I’m a mum of two beautiful boys and a hemp enthusiast. Once I started learning about the benefits of this amazing plant it literally became my passion and part of my soul. Each month I will be writing a column where I will be talking about different hemp related topics, cannabinoids and the possible health benefits related to this amazing plant.

THE FUTURE IS

GREEN

The Leaf Elite theleafextracts@gmail.com theleafelite.com

So why do I believe this is the product of the future?

that we were using hemp as long as 8,000 years BC.

In my opinion it can simply change the world and the way we know it, this is the miracle plant! We can eat it, we can wear it, we can construct with it and by planting it we can reduce CO2 pollution! This month I’m enthralled to be explaining about the new “CBD” (the new big thing everyone is talking about), the amazing benefits introducing Hemp into your life will bring, and how it can affect the future.

Hemp and Cannabis are both species of the same plant but they have several differences the main ones being the THC content in Hemp will be 0.2%, and the plant looks long and slim with thin leaves. ON the other hand, Medical grown cannabis will have a high THC and the plant will be shorter and bushier. I always tell people to think of the Cat family … the domestic cat and the lion are two of the same species but very different.

The “green rush” is now hitting Europe and I’m here to try and introduce you to the new world of Hemp based products by sharing my knowledge that I have gained through my experiences in launching my own TLE organic hemp range here in Spain.

The History of Hemp

So what is Hemp? Hemp is an incredibly versatile plant that has played an important role in history. It can be used to produce rope, clothing, paper, and more. Hemp has been the catalyst for man’s earliest innovations. There is even archaeological evidence

48

Hemp was probably the earliest plant cultivated. Archaeologists have found the remains of hemp cloth in ancient Mesopotamia which dates back to around 8,000 BC. It is widely thought that hemp cultivation represents the oldest example of mankind’s industrial efforts. This plant was used to make the 600-year-old Gutenberg Bible, as well as the sails of the English fleet of ships that defeated the Spanish Armada. In fact, at one point, it was illegal for farmers in England not to grow hemp.

In America, too, hemp has been held in high esteem by those in power. Founding Father and former President Thomas Jefferson is quoted as saying, “hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country.” Later, George Washington encouraged the cultivation of hemp when he said, “make the most you can of the Indian Hemp seed and sow it everywhere.”

The many uses of hemp Fibre: It can be used to make fabrics and textiles, rope and paper. The word ‘canvas’ actually derives from the word cannabis. Food: The seeds of hemp are extremely nutritious and can be pressed into oil or made into milk. The leaves can be used in salads or to make teas. Building material ‘hemp Crete’: biodegradable plastics, and wood replacements. These materials have been used in the manufacture of many things, including electronics, cars and houses. Biofuel: Biodiesel — sometimes known as ‘hempoline’. CBD: In the last few years, the CBD industry has exploded. Across the globe, the all-natural benefits of CBD

body. The reason that CBD is such an effective form of support for human health is due to the body’s endogenous cannabinoid system. The regulatory structure of the body has millions of cannabinoid receptors in the brain and nervous system, which react not only to plant-derived cannabinoids (such as hemp and marijuana) but also to natural cannabinoids produced within our body. These receptors are called CB1 and CB2 and are present throughout our body. When the phtocannabinoids of the plant interact with these neurons it binds to the receptors and effectively infiltrates the endocannabinoid system, helping our body regulate itself in many different ways, including sleep, mood, appetite, and pain.

Fun Cannabis Fact

This is why by introducing CBD into your daily regime can help restore balance within your eco system. In my opinion and the feedback that I have

FUN CANNABIS FACT has resulted in a huge demand for CBD products, with hemp being the primary source of CBD.

What is CBD …. CBD stands for Cannabidiol, it is one of the 118 natural ingredients or chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in the hemp/ cannabis plant and is becoming a popular natural remedy for many common ailments due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Will CBD oil make you high? The short answer is no, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis and causes the sensation of getting “high” that’s often associated with marijuana. However, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive, it is a calming compound that has anti-anxiety and anti-psychotic effects. This quality makes CBD an appealing option for those who are looking for relief from pain and other symptoms without the mindaltering effects of marijuana or certain pharmaceutical drugs. CBD is gaining momentum in the health and wellness world, with some scientific studies confirming it may help treat a variety of ailments such as chronic pain and anxiety. Last year a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) revealed that CBD may help treat symptoms relating to Alzheimer’s

had with my customers is that it simply makes you feel restored and this is due to the fact that it works by improving your homeostasis. The way that the cannabinoids react with our system can trigger an array of beneficial side effects relieving anxiety, stress, chronic pain, and a number of other related issues. In saying this I am a great believer in the power of self healing and you are what you eat. Everybody can have a positive impact on their own lives by the choices that they make. You can choose to help yourself by promoting a healthier lifestyle through eating and exercise or you can choose not to. CBD can enhance your wellbeing and help you bring your homeostasis into balance giving your body the optimum chance of recovery and help you on the journey to a better quality of life in alliance with other health enhancing activities.

Hemp for Health We consume all types of hemp products in my house because they are so good for you. Hemp seeds contain all the essential fatty acids that we require to make a brain and body function correctly. Hemp contains not only Omega 3 which is usually found in oily fish but also Omega 6 which isn’t found in any other foods. These help with brain development and function. Hemp seeds also contain phytosterols which help reduce cholesterol and 10 amino acids which are great to help the absorption of other minerals. Get more hemp into your life!!

CANNABINOIDS AND HEADACHES In todays society we are continuously put under pressure to look good to have a continuous stream of beautiful photos of your life on social media whilst juggling the normal house work bills and everything else! These additional problems and peer pressures have impacted the way that our body functions. One common symptom is that people are suffering from is severe headaches and migraines. By introducing the cannabinoids into the bloodstream it reacts to the CB1 receptors which control the central nervous system reducing the pressure in the frontal lobes. There have been clinical studies which has proven that cannabis taken in different forms reduces severe migraines and headaches but further testing needs to be carried out. (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ pmcarticles) All I can say is that when my customers have taken the TLE elite organic tincture they have found that it eases headaches. This is why it is vital to gather more information and anyone taking any cannabinoid based product should try to monitor themselves closely to find out what it helps them with. All research is vital in supporting the legalisation of the plant.

Testimonial Modeling Shoot As my amazing tincture was ready for sale I took Sasha my beautiful TLE CBD model to Parque Naguelles, Marbella for a photo shoot. The dog walkers were extremely pleased and surprised to find us taking videos and photos for the website and Instagram. Check out the stunning images on Instagram @theleaftlc and help the hemp community grow!

HEMPING THE ELDERLY (Sorry couldn’t resist) Our lovingly created hemp CBD & CBG tinctures have had more positive feedback. I get so excited when I hear that our products, that we have worked so hard to create, are truly helping people.

Product Development We went to visit our partners at the laboratory to find out how the new creams and capsules were coming on, everything is in production but not ready yet. I will keep you posted on the new fantastic products that are being made, so watch this space! We are also in talks with a prestigious London store who would like to stock TLE Elite Organic Tinctures and other Spanish hemp products …. So exciting!!! After a set back with our packaging (namely a flood) ruining my beautiful boxes that we had custom made it was back to the drawing board. Luckily enough my friends in creative design helped me make my artisan boxes which are now finally ready for sale… just in time for the prefect Christmas Gift. Who knew that being an entrepreneur in Spain could be this much hard work but still be fun! … Yippee!

Forming the right partnerships … To help with research and development in the industry we teamed up with Sticky Fingers in Marbella to help to start to build a foundation of research to help the cannabis industry. This is a private members club where you can consume cannabis on the premises and a safe place to gather information regarding products and cannabis.

This month’s testimonial is from MRS KANE a 90-year-old woman from Liverpool. I originally gave her the 10% elite tincture to help combat the feeling of anxiety that she was having but was amazed at the other benefits that she received. After 6 days of taking the tincture her swelling in her legs had greatly reduced, she felt happy and she was also able to walk un aided! I’m Mary Kane and I take Clare’s oil and I’m ninety and I feel marvellous - Mary Kane Please check out @theleaftlc for the video. She’s an incredible woman and a pleasure to help. It’s an amazing feeling that you get when you see what an organic full spectrum tincture can really can do for people.

OsteoStrong® is not a gym, diet, supplement, pharmaceutical or medical treatment. It is a unique place to improve your overall health with a focus on the foundation of our bodies; the skeletal system. One of the best characteristics of OsteoStrong is its inclusivity. No matter what age you are or how much time you usually spend exercising, this treatment is

“My lower back pain has reduced to an almost non-existent level!“

I have been going to OsteoStrong now for a number of months. The reason I am going is to reverse osteopenia and I am amazed at how quickly I have started to hit my rapid growth trigger. Hopefully by next year I will have reached my goal and I will continue to work on my bone strength. OsteoStrong is wonderful place and I am so happy to have found it. The staff are amazing. I so enjoy going there “I am amazed and Linda and Gabrielle at how quickly are two I have started wonderful to hit my rapid ladies who take excellent growth trigger.” care of me from start to finish. Bone health is so important for all ages and at OsteoStrong the staff are so knowledgeable and really care about your bone health. I feel so lucky to have it.

Puerto Banús-based OsteoStrong has developed a strategy to care for and strengthen the skeletal system which as a result will improve your bone density, posture, balance, athletic performance, while decreasing joint and back pain. Here we share some experiences of OsteoStrong and its amazing effects.

It is always a pleasure to visit OsteoStrong Banus, in particular for the superb attention received from Gabriella and Lynda. They are true 'rays of sunshine', even on a wet and cold day, they effortlessly make your OsteoStrong experience an extremely positive one. As far as benefits are concerned I Barbara, having experienced a great deal of pain in my lower back for a considerable length of time, can now say it has reduced to an almost non-existent level. On a day when I have walked extensively, I sometimes develop an ache at the end of the day, which reduces following rest.

I’d like to share my experience with OsteoStrong. I started OsteoStrong four and a half months ago after being diagnosed with Osteoporosis. My recent scan shows amazing results as my bone mass has increased by 11% and I now only have Osteopenia. I certainly recommend them.

Roger experiences greater feeling and sensation in his toes and the soles of the feet, which has been missing for some time. As yet, neither of us have re-checked our bone density numbers, however the machines are illustrating improved performance on a very regular basis. The hydro-massage following the exercise provides us with a most pleasurable end to the session.

“My bone mass has increased by 11% and I now only have Osteopenia.”

Mary O’Driscoll 54

a new fantastic method to improve your skeletal strength.

The OsteoStrong sessions are always viewed as positive ones and certainly not as a punishment. Thank you Gabby and Lynda for your consistent patience and motivation.

“The change has been remarkable! Not only because of the DEXA Scan results, I am also noticing it in my everyday life.”

I started this new technique 4 months ago and the change has been remarkable! Not only because of the DEXA Scan results, I am also noticing it in my everyday life. I’ve considerably increased my performance at the gym even despite I was sick and absent for 3 weeks! In addition, I feel more energized at the end of each weekly session... this also has to do with the exquisite attention I receive from Gabriela and Linda.

María Luisa Kuyumdjian

I hope my testimonial can be useful for other people.

In 2005 I sustained an injury to my sacro-Ileac joint which left me with an unstable joint and chronic pain. I also suffered from bilateral Achilles tendinitis as a result. I had been using a walking stick to help with my balance and was on the highest dosage of Tramadol plus Co-codamol. I had trouble sleeping and couldn’t walk or stand for very long at all. I heard about OsteoStrong through a friend who persuaded me to try it out. I was sceptical as my problems were not in the bones but with muscles and tendons. However, I was wrong! Since the second session, I have noticed an improvement in my condition. After 10 sessions, I am better than I’ve been in the past 13 years! The Achilles tendinitis is giving no problems, my joint appears more stable. I have reduced the pain relief to the lowest dose of Tramadol and plan to come of it completely with the support of my family doctor. I am much more mobile, don’t need the walking stick! I am sleeping properly again and due to my increased mobility I have lost weight and feel so much more alive! I have even started hill walking!

“From the second session my pain disappeared and has not returned.”

If I had been told this is where I’d be after 10 sessions I would never have believed it. The muscles and tendons appear to have been strengthened which means my joint is held in place better now. I would recommend OsteoStrong to anyone with a similar problem. It has completely changed my life.

I have been doing it for 6 months now and every time I leave I feel so much better. One thing that has been so important for me is that I had a pain in my right shoulder for over a year, the pain restricted my movement and I was left unable to do many things, such as swimming. From the second session my pain disappeared and has not returned.

If I had been told this is where I’d be after 10 sessions I would never have believed it. ... It has completely changed my life. Elaine Veness

I am so happy with the benefits of OsteoStrong.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mindblowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

LastSnipping One This month Jonathan takes time out of his crazy festive season work schedule to talk charities, gift ideas and of course, the Christmas work do.

Mane Attraction Firstly, I would like to say a great big congratulations from myself and the team at Reflections to our colleague, Leslie, who recently tied the knot with her hubbie, Tom, here in Marbella, AND what a beautiful bride did she make! Our very own bridal hair specialist, Paul, was in charge of Lesley’s wedding day hair, as well as looking after all the bridesmaids do’s as well. The boy did us proud! When left to its own devices, Lesley has the most amazing natural afro hair. As it’s so curly, it tends to lean towards being frizzy. Lesley is usually seen sporting

58

a low maintenance, curly up-do in the salon, so for her wedding day she wanted something very different from her everyday look. For the first stage of the transformation she took advantage of the salons Nanokeratin treatment to make her hair more pliable. This treatment transforms unruly hair into beautifully shiny, sleek, repaired hair that’s so much easier to manage. On the big day Paul started by washing Lesleys hair with the Redken Frizz Dismiss Shampoo and Conditioner. He then applied Redkens Frizz Dismiss Smooth Force to help him blow dry her hair to within an inch of its life. It was so important to make sure that the hair was 100% dry, as failure to do so would

have had her hair fighting to go back to its frizzy roots. Add to that the fact she decided to have a beach side wedding, when she should have chosen the arid desert which has very low humidity, Paul really had his work cut out. After blowdrying the hair straight, Paul went on to use the GHD Wand to create loose, smooth waves which he then brushed through gently with a soft brush. He finished off with the Redken Shine Spray, leaving her with soft bouncy and shiny waves which lasted all day and night. The newlyweds are currently backpacking round the arse end of the Far East and having the time of their lives. I have to say if the Hilton started offering back packing options I might consider doing something similar.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Most of you will know that I am a big GHD brush fan. However after having Katerina nagging me for the past few weeks to try the new Paul Mitchell Neuro brushes I finally gave them a whirl and was actually quite impressed. I will say I adore the colour, it’s reminiscent of the décor of a gay club in Miami in the eighties. Another bonus being neon blue is you won’t lose the damn things, which is a BIG deal in this salon AKA the Bermuda Triangle. Honestly, so many hair products and tools get ‘misplaced’ between the stylists, never to be seen again, that I wouldn’t be surprised if Lord Lucan turned up in one of the storage cupboards one day. The Neuro brushes (from €26€ - €30 ) would make perfect stocking fillers. I have also put aside the Neuro 3 in 1 €130 for my God daughters Christmas present. This multi-tasking iron can create endless styling possibilities, perfect for someone who is constantly changing their style.

The season of good will My very good friend and client, Marienne Stenehome, will be hosting a Designer Exchange Christmas Market charity event for MAITI NEPAL on 5th December at the Magna Cafe. Basically, in a nutshell, you will get the chance to make money whilst raising money. De-clutter your closet and drop your unwanted designer goodies off at the designated drop off locations (Reflections are of course included.) 75% of sold items goes to you and 25 % goes directly to the Maiti Nepal Shelter in Nepal which is dedicated to fighting against human trafficking and sexual exploitation of young Nepalese women and children.

I SHALL PUT THIS OUT THERE NOW. WE WILL END UP IN A NIGHTCLUB, IT WILL BE MY IDEA AND WE WILL END UP HAVING A ROW AT THE DOOR. SO EVERYONE DON’T SAY YOU WEREN’T WARNED.

Let’s get the party started

There has been the usual fight over where we are going to hold the Xmas work do and, as always, Tina and I won. We will be celebrating at La Sala again. I don’t know why they even bother to question this choice, as we always end up getting our own way. I love La Sala, it does exactly what it says on the tin. We want decent food, good service, a party atmosphere and somewhere to make a show of ourselves. La Sala provides this and more. I am sure after the meal is over, we will be joined by the usual suspects which will guarantee the kind of behavior that will have us all cringing till next Christmas. I shall put this out there now. We WILL end up in a nightclub, it WILL be my idea and we WILL end up having a row at the door. So everyone don’t say you weren’t warned.

Naturally, Gerry will say that he won’t sit next to me at the dinner, (he will do and will probably spend most of the time telling me I have had enough to

drink.) It is also guaranteed that when I stand up to tell everyone we are all going to a club, he will start moaning and tell me it’s not one of my best ideas. After much arguing he will end up coming and dancing the night away. I don’t know why he even tries to fight it. Please God as this goes to press, Nader is on his safe return from his trip to the homeland. I don’t think I need to remind you of the time he went away for two weeks, which ended up being more like twelve. I was about to try and DHL him back to us again, when he showed up for work as if nothing was wrong. Plus, I need him back in time for the Xmas do as his behavior plummets so much lower than mine and in half the time. He makes me look positively well behaved. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas

Ta-Ra! Love...Jonathan

Spanish Street Style

inter in Spain is like Spring in the UK and we cannot get enough of it! Except for the rainy days, we have all been eagerly anticipating the weather change to finally get out those distressed denim jeans, casual knitwear pullovers and leather vintage boots. Barcelona-based stylist, social media strategist and consultant Blanca Mirรณ Scrimieri describes her style as "spontaneous", dressing for her mood rather than what's on trend. Her attitude makes for vibrant ensembles, punctuated by bright pastels, unusual trims and pattern-clashing prints, rounded off with her signature statement sunglasses. As we are in a more tropical environment, floral prints are definitely still allowed. Paired with a thin scarf and some fancy sunglasses, your look will turn you into the queen of street style. The preppy silk scarf in square or rectangular shapes is a contemporary addition to this season's collections. Geometric prints, florals and stripes offer a variety of aesthetic and styling options for this decorative item. One trend that has stuck around from last summer is flared long skirts, combined with sneakers and a blazer. Match it with some fancy hot red earrings. Another is the trench coat, an item which will probably never go out of fashion and satin, coming in all kinds of colours and shapes.

EMOTIONAL DESIGN Blurring the lines between

Model, Interior Designer and Fashion Editor, Dominique Forsström gives us a glimpse into design, fashion, architecture and lifestyle this month. Discover how whether your interests lie in fashion or interior design, styles are now interchangeable, from season to season…

A

fter decades of determined separation, the relationship between the industries of fashion and interior design has never been more intertwined than it is today. With access to style trends so readily available, it’s not surprising that consumers correlate how they express themselves through their dress to how they style their homes quicker than ever before. The blending of these industries makes sense. Fashion and interior design have more in common than we realize – not just in physical form, but in the roles that they play in our everyday life. We choose where and how we live, work, and play – and how we look while we do so. We dress ourselves in a way which we feel reflects our individual personality, and we do the same for our personal spaces. We are drawn to designed spaces where we feel most comfortable, focused or stimulated, depending on our state of mind.

Renta and Hermes, each has moved into interior design so that consumers can now outfit their interior with their favorite fashion designer. So, in conclusion, what does this mean for the contemporary world of Interior Design? The pattern, colour, texture, and shape we see in the New York and Paris shows of major fashion houses have inspired the upholstery fabric we see on a sofa, a window treatment or an area rug. Dramatic prints on a blouse are now even featured in our décor pillows. This has resulted in consumers finally embracing the phrase; “Your home is a reflection of yourself.” Consumers are dressing their homes with the same personality they dress themselves. Ultimately, today’s design is integral to the way people live their lives.

There are design principles that both practices share when creating furnishings in a space or an ensemble of clothing: determining a focal point, creating the silhouette, balancing proportion and details. There is always a connection between materials and their story, there is a coherence of the world of beauty. Fashion, design, architecture and interiors all flow together as a singular state of being. They essentially all seek shelter, selfexpression and protection.

Interiors are the new runway Due to the inevitable shift in how fashion impacts interior design, more and more relevant fashion designers are adding interior collections to their compilations – or at least partnering with architects and designers to create interior lines that speak to their aesthetics. Interior and product design companies who have traditionally had no ties to the fashion world are becoming more involved, and vice versa. Years ago, Italian fashion-house Missoni paired up with flooring company Bolon to create bold new flooring patterns that use interpretations of patterns from their own fashion collections, and has even explored ventures in the hotel and restaurant industries. THE "KAROO" ARMCHAIR With its distinct cotton satin lining and unique chair design, it’s obvious where the inspiration for this impressive piece came from. This dream of a chair was made to remind you of the semi-desert area of South Africa. A classic, but powerful unit that will make your living room shine like never before.

Mixing art, such as colourful paintings and neon lights with Christmas elements gives your living room the ideal edgy vibe and rock’n’roll touch. With bright furniture, the room still doesn’t look too heavy, however with the patterned rug, pillows and other fancy little details, the room is radiating a cool, but still chic and timeless character.

LIGHT RIDER MCLAREN SHOW THAT LESS REALLY CAN BE MORE

MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE

Colin Chapman, the founder of Lotus, famously said, “FOR SPEED, ADD LIGHTNESS.” In an age where many supercars are too big and heavy for their own good, McLaren are one of the few manufacturers who take low weight seriously.

T

heir new 600LT is a case in point, and is based on the 570S, the sweet spot in McLaren’s mid-range Sports Series range. The 600LT is 96kg lighter than a 570S with an extra 30hp, and 100kg more downforce, the 1,274kg dry weight delivering a power-toweight ratio of 481hp/tonne. Lower weight, improved aero, bigger brakes and state of the art rubber; all of these engender more speed along with better handling and grip without the need for a major increase in engine power. And lower weight means less loading on the engine for better fuel economy and emissions. Since most enthusiasts want to know a cars power and performance before anything else here goes. A modest increase in boost pressure within the ECU remap and lower back-pressure from the new top exit exhaust system

96

sees the output of the 570S M838TE motor rise from 570hp and 600Nm of torque to 600hp at 7,500rpm, with 620Nm of torque from 5,500 to 6,500rpm.

length of the 600LT are much harder to discern. But that 74mm is significant in the wind tunnel and on track where McLaren have aimed this 570S derivative.

The stopwatch says 2.9 sec to 100km/h, 8.2 sec to 200km/h, 24.9 sec to 300km/h, and a Vmax of 328km/h (204mph), making the 600LT a bona fide member of the 200mph club.

Conceived as a more highly focused trackday tool that can still be used as a daily driver, the 600LT is not a successor to the 570S, which is still in production, but rather a 570S with its talons considerably sharpened for hard-core trackday junkies.

So why LT, which is short for the Longtail designation first coined for the legendary McLaren F1 GTR Longtail racecar whose pursuit of optimised high performance aerodynamics and greater downforce was the direct result of form following function? While the ‘Longtail’ is pretty obvious on the F1 GTR, the new carbon-fibre bodywork, fixed rear wing, and longer rear underbody diffuser that add 74mm (around 3.0 inch) to the overall

In Porsche speak, the 570S and 600LT approximate the relationship between the Carrera GTS and GT3 RS, where the former is an exquisitely balanced road car with track talent, and the latter is a finely honed trackday machine that doubles as a competent road car. Every new supercar needs a reference point to chart its empirical progress, so McLaren kicked off our 600LT track

TORQUE TALK

session at the Hungaroring with a few laps in the 570S, the current shining star of their mid-range Sports Series. The technical differences between the 570S and the new 600LT from which it evolved are not small by any means. And so just as McLaren’s astute PR team had us do a few laps of Estoril in the 720S before climbing aboard the sensational Senna, their aim here was to highlight the yawning gap in driving dynamics between the 570S and 600LT. As much as I admire and respect the 720S for the depth and breath of its dynamic abilities, the more analogue feeling 570S, 570GT, and the 570S Spider in particular tug strongly at my sensibilities. While not as blindingly fast in a straight line or as competent on a race track as the 720S, the conventional steel suspension, active damping, hydraulic steering, and smaller rubber footprints of the 570 models deliver more subjective driver reward at sane speeds on public roads. That is not to say that they do not also excel on track too. With a lovely chassis balance, and enough turbocharged grunt to unhinge the tail at will in the bends, the 570 models are more than competent trackday machines as well. In fact they impressive right up to the moment you jump from the 570S straight into the 600LT as we did. And then the penny drops.

My light bulb moment told me that the gap between these Sports Series models was equal to over half the difference between the 720S and Senna, which is going some considering that the Senna is over three times the price of a 720S, while a 600LT is around £30,000 more than a 570S. While I stop short of calling the 600LT a poor man’s Senna, I will not hesitate to say that it stands out as the current bargain of the McLaren range. Sheer empirical speed is not necessarily what the 600LT is about. Since you cannot drive flat out on public roads, the subjective responses of a car are more important for owners, and this is where the 600LT really comes into it’s own. That said as this was a track only launch we had no opportunity to gain any road impressions. The 600LT bolts off the line, the crisper and more direct feel of its chassis through the seat of your pants, the finer dialogue from the weightier steering, and the firmer response from the 720S derived brakes all bring it that much closer to the feeling of a racecar. This comes as no surprise once you learn that McLaren’s aim was to strike a happy median between the 570S road car and its GT4 racecar derivative.

Accelerate, brake, turn, accelerate. From the pit lane to the exit of the first bend is all it takes to recognise the more sharply focused inputs that ride your synapses straight to the driving pleasure centre in one screaming eureka moment. The 570S has light and precise power steering, but the 600LT’s heavier rack is noticeably superior in feel and feedback. The 570S has good throttle response for a turbocharged car, but also has a flat spot when you demand instant pick up in a higher gear. In comparison the 600LT’s turbos spool up immediately, allowing you to throttle steer the car better, as well as simply leaving a corner with more gusto. The changes to the engine mapping and lower backpressure have made the engine much more responsive and more like a naturally aspirated motor. The sharper throttle response, copious torque, and minimal change of roll angle when you move into the throttle mean more accurate throttle steering and improved mid-corner adjustability potential. While it still gives best in sound and response to the rabid Audi/ Lamborghini V10, the paradigm motor in this class, McLaren has made

great strides in the soundtrack of their engines since the flat, anodyne note produced by the MP4-12C. Senna apart, the 600LT makes the best McLaren soundtrack yet thanks in part to its two exhaust outlets being top mounted on the engine lid instead of exiting from the tail. The al fresco Spider experience should be awesome. I used the paddle shifters of the sevenspeed dual-clutch gearbox in Manual mode throughout my track session, noting the satisfyingly instantaneous upshifts, and fast and responsive

100

downshifts under braking. When I drove the McLaren 675LT at Silverstone in the summer of 2015, its bombastic performance, active aero and computer controlled active suspension were indelibly etched in my memory of outstanding supercar experiences. Thus my eyebrows went pretty high when McLaren told us that despite its conventional steel springs and active damping the less powerful 600LT is actually capable of higher cornering speeds than the mighty 675LT.

This is a good indication of the rate at which McLaren’s engineers have progressed in just three short years, even with a conventional set-up. But if you think about it this is not really surprising given the depth and breadth of F1 motorsport-derived knowledge and resources that the engineers in Woking can call upon.

Tyres are a fast moving part of the high performance car arena, and the uprated suspension was developed to optimise the grip of the Pirelli P-Zero Trofeo R rubber, which comes in 225/35R19 and 285/35R20 sizes front

TORQUE TALK

and rear respectively on 8.5J x 19-inch and 11.0J x 20-inch forged wheels. These new ultra-light multi-spoke forged wheels lower the critical unsprung weight by a whopping 17kg. The 390/380mm carbon-ceramic brake discs with six/four-pot callipers are from the 720S, and shave off another 4.0kg. The recalibrated springs and dampers produce a stiffer suspension with less roll on turn-in, and like a racecar the 600LT responds very well to trail braking. The front end is pointy but this does not upset the rear, which follows the front end into a bend perfectly on cue. As we noted before the changes wrought to the 570S suspension take it roughly halfway towards the GT4 racecar spec. The major geometry change at the rear is achieved by using the rear suspension arm forgings from the 720S to alter the way the rear tyres work under heavy braking. “Because we have a fixed rear wing on the 570S as opposed to active aero there is more pitch and dive under braking,” explained Gareth Howell, McLaren’s professional driver who helped develop the 600LT. “The

changes we made reduce the toe change under braking to improve stability,” he explained. “This came out of lessons learnt during development of the Senna, which uses a combination of this geometry and active aero to compensate for brick wall like retardation approximating that of a GT3 racecar.” As this is a mid-engine, rear-wheeldrive car, it has relatively low polar moment of inertia with agility and stability centred on how the car rotates into a bend. The front anti-roll bar is 50% stiffer than on the 570S, and is matched by a 25% smaller rear bar. By itself this would normally encourage more understeer, but the spring rates have been increased by 13% in front and 34% at the rear to compensate. These uprated springs also drop the ride height by 8.0mm. In sum the uprated suspension improves the cars turn-in and agility so you do not need to wait for the chassis to take a set while turning. It also delivers a more linear characteristic velocity once traction is broken, and as I found out when exploring the cars limits at the Hungaroring, power slides

are easy to initiate and control. From an aerodynamic perspective the rear wing on the 600LT is placed an inch higher in the airstream than the 570S and its GT sister. This and the longer rear diffuser make a big difference to downforce over the rear axle at speed, with overall downforce re-balanced by the larger front splitter. New side skirts with fins help to guide airflow along the cars flanks, further improving its aero profile. All this makes for a significant 100kg increase in overall downforce at the 250km/h we managed before braking at the end of the Hungaroring main straight. Here the 600LT feels unerringly stable, taking driver confidence and satisfaction to an all-time high. My favourite McLaren until now has been the 570S Spider as its carbonfibre tub means it suffers no structural stiffness or handling compromises when the roof is down. McLaren have been very open about the fact that the 600LT Spider will be along once the Coupe run is completed. I have a strong feeling that this might just become my new favourite McLaren.

"My latest project is the series entitled 'shiny shadows' and is inspired by my fascination with nature and its textures."

Did you study art or are you self-taught? If so where and what? At the beginning I was self-taught, I was practicing a lot by myself. Then after high school I got into the most prestigious film school in Poland, the Leon Schiller National Higher School of Film, Television and Theatre in Lรณdz, which is very famous around Europe and the rest of the world. What attracted you to your chosen art form above another? It was quite a natural choice for me, and it came almost organically. Somehow I was always attracted to images, and due to my lack of skills in manual painting I turned my interest to photography. Now I am exploring more and more of the world of moving images. What is your latest project and what inspired it? My latest project is the series entitled 'shiny shadows' and is inspired by my fascination with nature and its textures.

Where are you from and where are you based now? I'm from Warsaw, Poland, but now I'm based in Marbella. The last few years I was traveling through Asia but I felt that it was time to come back to Europe and pick up the challenge. Why Marbella? I really love the open spaces and the possibility of driving along the coast of Europe. You can just go to the car and hit the road. Plus Spain has friendly people, great culture and food. Have you always been an artist? I like to think so, as when I was really young I loved watching the clouds for hours, and painting very crazy worlds (unfortunately I have no talent for any kind of painting)! Did you choose art or did art choose you? Was there a catalyst to becoming an artist? I think we chose each other. I started at a very early age by photographing mostly close ups of nature. I was always fascinated about the world and wanted to capture moments which were invisible to others.

117 117

"I AM BEGINNING TO FOCUS MORE ON PEOPLE AND THEIR STORIES AND I AM FINDING THAT PEOPLE CAN BE ART THEMSELVES."

Why are you passionate about this subject? I love that the normally tiny bugs are hiding various amazing textures. They are so small but still on photos we can see the perfect architecture of their structure (which is similar to our bridges). Describe your art in a sentence. What makes it different / unique? I focus on colours & textures that I feel makes our lives richer. I think my unique style is in the light which shapes the structures, focusing our eyes on new elements. If you weren't an artist what would you be? I think I would be somebody between modern life and life in the nature. For sure a traveler, a person who is experiencing the world and showing others how amazing it can be when we step out from our safe place. Describe how your work has evolved and why? My work is evolving towards people, before I was focusing on the textures only. Now as I am older I am beginning to focus more on people and their stories and I am finding that people can be art themselves. Where do the ideas come from? A lot of my ideas came from movies. I love to be inspired by the worlds of other people. What do you love about what you do? I really love to be involved in other people’s lives and creating the most amazing memories. What are your top tips for being creative? Give yourself more free time to be inspired, when you open up your mind to other people’s worlds you will be creative. Do you think everyone can be creative? I think so. It is most important to do what you are passionate about, you can be creative with anything you love.

118 118

What has been your greatest inspiration and why? My greatest inspiration is still nature. What life event changed you? The first time I used the darkroom. I was in there for 15 hours developing traditional photo papers but I didn’t feel tired. I knew I was creating something special and that feeling pushed me towards fulfilling my goals. If you could give one piece of advice what would it be? Give yourself more free time. More time for just sitting and thinking, without a book and without any computer or phone. That’s when the ideas begin to come. What advice do you have for people that want to buy art? Choose what your heart desires not what others tell you. Art should be for enjoying and exploring yourself, not only for decoration or investment. And what advice for people that are interested in developing their creativity? Do what you like, not what is best for selling or what others like. Who has inspired you the most in your life? I think my Father, which is very common, but he showed me what hard work means, and I found it very useful in art as well. What is your website and how can I buy a piece? My photos can be seen on my website www.krawczunas.com and you can order them there, but also it is possible to arrange a meeting and talk about it over the coffee. I have an amazing team, who can deliver framed reproductions and prints on plexiglass. This modern printing technique combined with a large reproduction size gives spectacular results and beautiful presentations in luxury design interiors.

Winter time at By Christie Holland

E

ver since I walked into Nobu in Berkeley Square in London many years ago, I have been the Japanese Chef’s number one fan, so when the opportunity arose in our office to sample the Winter menu at Nobu Hotel Marbella, no one was getting in my way. The a la carte menu boasts all the signature dishes as well as an array of Andalusian inspired creations, with such a vast choice, I was delighted when we were presented with the streamlined Winter Omakase Menu, making my life a lot easier. An Amuse-Bouche of Crispy Nori with Avocado Tartare started off our gastronomic journey and prepared us for our Appetizer. A choice of Salmon Sashimi, White Fish Dry Miso or Sashimi Salad Matsuhisa; I opted for the Salmon, as a trip to Nobu isn’t a trip to Nobu without a mouth-watering sashimi, in my eyes! Impressed as ever, we moved onto our main course; the classic Black Cod Miso, Beef Skewers with Teriyaki or Mushroom Toban. You probably guessed I went for the Black Cod which is, in my opinion, Nobu’s finest creation and I am yet to find anywhere in the world that even comes close. We finished off our dinner with a sweet treat choosing from Cheesecake, Fruit Platter or Green Tea Tartlet, luckily I was dining with two guests and we decided to order one of each and share; the perfect end to a perfect evening! If that wasn’t enough, the entire Omakase Menu is priced at just 45€ per person… you know where to find me this Winter!

“Omakase” (Japanese: お任せ Hepburn: o-makase) is a Japanese phrase that means “I’ll leave it up to you”. To leave the selection to the chef, as opposed to ordering à la carte. 122

FIZZ and all that bubbly stuff

Ellen Wallace is longtime international news journalist and the author of the popular book Vineglorious! Switzerland's Wondrous World of Wines. She writes regularly about European wines and travel and splits her time between La Costa del Sol and the Swiss Alps. Ellen’s blog:ellenwine.com

Time for the corks to fly and the fizz to overfill the glass and everyone to go giggly: the holiday season is upon us. How about this season we make it the year to understand the bubbly stuff, and do it right? For a start, what exactly is that in your glass? Here are some basic facts, plus a few little “did you know” things to add to the conversation so that you sound a little more intelligent and a little less drunk – useful if it’s the company party and your boss is standing next to you, or you’re meeting the future in-laws.

hampagne: who hasn’t heard of it? It’s the king of fizz, a drink that boasts sophistication and luxury, but don’t believe anyone who tells you this is because it is the best sparkling wine. There are great brands and mediocre ones and ones we won’t mention, just as with any other wine. It’s made in France, must and I repeat must come from the Champagne region, by international law. The producers spend a massive amount of money every year protecting the name; they also spend a fortune marketing the product to make sure you think nothing is comparable.

COSTA CUISINE

Mumm, Veuve Clicquot, Dom Perignon – this last one was created in 1937 as a luxury brand, a new idea at the time, that caught on quickly. The non-vintage blends that made champagne famous are created after the harvest, a mix or recipe that gives each champagne its particular character. The reason for the blending is far from today’s marketing pitches, however: Champagne is so far north and the harvests vary so much in quality from one year to another that winemakers had to blend to come up with a drinkable product.

This northern outpost– at least until climate change starting making England a place for growing grapes – barely has time for them to ripen, and the soil is very chalky, two things that give these wines special aromas – what you smell – and mouth, or palate, what you feel and taste. The grapes are high in acidity and without champagne, this region would be a poor one for wine.

We are now drinking champagne year-round, and there is no sign of its popularity flagging. More than other sparkling wines, it really goes with any and all foods, as well as on its own. A final tip: we used to drink champagne only out of flute glasses, but recent research has been showing it is

We used to talk about the champagne method, now called the “traditional method”; it is simply the way the effervescence, or bubbling effect is created. The bubbles are carbon dioxide, the result of a second fermentation under pressure. There are other ways of producing sparkling wine, but the ones we hear about most tend to be made this way. Most are white, but they can be rosé or red, depending on the base wine.

"Sparkling wines And indeed, it can be vary in the quantity really exquisite. The and size of their grapes are a starting point to understanding bubbles - not why it is special. Chardonnay, a white necessarily the case grape, is used, but only that the more of 30% of the grapes in the area around Reims and these, the better the Épernay, the heart of champagne country, wine." are white. Black grapes, notably Pinot Noir and the region’s third grape, Meunier, can be used for white wines only if they are pressed ever so gently. For quality champagne, this means a very small amount of juice. You start to see why the price climbs.

dessert it was just too much sugar. Others are cremant, which is made in other regions of France that can’t use the champagne on their labels.

Champagne is labelled nature or brut nature at the extreme dry end, then extra dry (or extra sec), sec, demi-sec and doux at the sweet end. Traditional method wines from other regions but also made with other grapes include the famous and often excellent Spanish cava, a similarly often-good one from NE Italy, prosecco. One of the prosecco family sons left his job as their oenologist when he founded the Geox shoe company after hiking in the hot SW of the US after a day selling his wine – he wanted more comfortable shoes! Italy’s spumante is medium-sweet and blessedly lower in alcohol if you’re partying a lot – often half that of a champagne, and Moscato, which can be cloying and the quality varies greatly. I recently had one with a sharp blue cheese and it was extremely good, whereas with

A NIGHT TO FORGET By Ian Greenland

contorted human forms beyond the narrow corridor we found ourselves in. We swapped nervous glances over a sharp intake of breath as uniformed figures conducted their final checks on our person. No words of encouragement were offered, just a solemn nod of approval before they stepped aside and ushered us on, plunging us headlong into the booming maelstrom.... The date was December 31st. The year 2007. The place.... I can’t remember

I

remember it like it was yesterday. Scores of us stood in file, some huddled together for warmth, chatting nervously, others alone and silent in a sort of dread anticipation of the distant rumbling that grew louder by the minute. Jaws chattered and teeth ground together. For most of us, it wasn’t our first time into the fray, but this promised to be a truly brutal encounter. Nerves notwithstanding, the barely suppressed adrenaline was intoxicating.

I cast my eyes along the line, wondering who would make it out of this in one piece. Those immediately around me had become my closest allies, bonds forged over many years, many excursions... family. Others remained strangers, our purposes converging on this date, in this place. I silently wished them the best, well aware I would never see the majority of them again. Most were barely 18 years of age. The night air biting at us, the cacophony beyond our line grew near-deafening as we were marshalled slowly forward, the dying chatter all but impossible now as we glimpsed flashes of lights and

now - some bloody jumped up venue in central London promising “ The best New Year’s Eve rave of all time”. TOTAL BOLLOCKS. Right after that bit where I made it sound like we were brave troops heading into glorious battle, we stepped into a sweaty, smelly, loud, packed, over-priced warehouse, promising little more than some of the best (ie.worst) queues of all time. Having queued outside for an hour, despite buying £25 tickets online weeks earlier, we immediately had the choice of which queue to join next. Queue 2 was an enormous “fluids-in” queue at the bar where first prize for making it to the front was a £5 can of beer tipped into a plastic cup which would likely be elbowed out of your hand before you made it ten paces. The hard, litter-strewn floor sporadically glimpsed between the press of sweaty fools was testament to this, slippery-slick in some places, sticky in others. Queue 3 was the “fluids-out” queue leading to the toilets, which, when I finally saw the gents, quite literally the following year, was the closest thing to a battlefield I’ve ever truly experienced. No glory was to be found on this night, no gentlemen in sight. Glassy-eyed geezers staggered out of cubicles without locks, the horrors they’d inflicted reverberating in their minds, the smells in their nostrils. This was central London and yet there wasn’t even one of those guys willing to stand in there offering mints, paper towels and cheap aftershave for a quid - that’s how bad they were. What sticks with me is that the organisers who’d fleeced thousands upon thousands of pounds from us gullible lot

Right after that bit where I made it sound like we were brave troops heading into glorious battle, we stepped into a sweaty, smelly, loud, packed, overpriced warehouse, promising little more than some of the best (ie.worst) queues of all time.

and hung nary a fairy light in decoration were content to supply only hot water from the taps, lest desperate clubbers should try to avoid buying the £3 bottled stuff at the head of Queue 2. The warm, fuzzy feeling most experienced here had more to do with dehydration than the season of goodwill we were clearly leaving behind. Queue 4 was a kind of undercover queue - the dance floor itself. The main body of the warehouse was given over to it, dangerously full with revellers of all shapes and sizes, rhythmically bumping against each other like sweaty atoms in a big stupid omelette. The mass of people had no definable start, middle or end, but it was a queue nonetheless. A cubic queue. A noisy holding pen for the other queues. They say you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. Well you can’t dance for six hours without needing a drink or a wee. Sooner or later all these little eggs would break. Queues 2 and 3 need only bide their time.... Upon first entering this battleground, feeling the oppressive heat, seeing the state of the floor and some of the crowd, I realised my expensive winter coat was best off in the relative safety of the cloakroom, so my first act at “The best NYE rave of all time” was joining queue 5.... and that’s where I stayed for 55 fucking minutes. Unaware at this early stage how queue-based and ultimately shit the rest of my New Year’s would be, every minute spent in queue 5 felt like an eternity. Deprived of my friends (several of whose coats I held) and wanting desperately to join their fun, I pictured them in a blissfully hedonistic embrace, awash with euphoria and the promise of the night. Of course each of them was presently in their own private queuing hell, those who headed straight for queue 4 not yet realising their NYE experience had already peaked....

moustachioed and more likely to be sharing needles than genetics, this dynamic duo were nevertheless just as stultifyingly inept. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt that they could stay on top of hanging a jacket and taking two quid, or hanging a jacket and giving back a numbered ticket, or even giving back a numbered ticket and taking two quid, but being required to do all three together was apparently a coat-strewn bridge too far. The room looked like Primark in a hurricane. Despite severe misgivings, I’d come too far to turn back, so deposited our garbs and money, cursing the fact each of them had probably earned about £12 while I’d stood in line. Two hours in, two queues down and zero time spent actually enjoying myself, I now felt stonecold sober - I was in fact far from it, but it’s all relative. Unable to locate any of my mates on my first or second pass of the venue, my only possible salvation seemed to be joining queue 2.... ...and that’s where I was at midnight, December 31st, 2007. In a manky warehouse in central London in a bloody queue as wide as it was deep, maniacally jostling for the attention of people getting paid to have a marginally better time than me. Whether it was because of the sheer weight of numbers or the smacked-arse expression

I no doubt had on my face by this point, it took longer to get served a couple of beers then it would to drink them. When the music stopped and the big countdown started, friends queueing together began to embrace while those of us flying solo looked awkwardly around. Desperate to be seen to validate the apparently momentous occasion and the great time I was supposed to be having by at least high-fiving someone, I was secretly more concerned with whether I could use the ensuing madness to squeeze a little closer to the warm, overpriced lager before I pissed myself... This is what I had become. THIS is what fucking Queue Year’s Eve had done to me.... January 1st. 2008. My first resolution: Never again. Ian Greenland is a writer and photographer. He’s not quite as lame as he appears here.... London is. greenlandphotography.com

Upon finally reaching the cloakroom counter and instantly appreciating why this seemingly simple procedure had taken so long, I was greeted by the rave equivalent of the Chuckle Brothers. Younger, less

“OH YES HE IS!”

“OH NO HE ISN’T!” What could be more Christmassy than a good old fashioned rollicking pantomime? Or “panto”, as we commonly call it. Having said that, Christmas is rarely mentioned on stage and pantomimes have been known to make an appearance at Easter. But Christmas is traditional, and there was a time when Boxing Day was not complete without a visit to the good old matinee panto. But the word itself is of ancient pagan origin, deriving from the Greek “pantomimos”, which consists of “panto” (all) and “mimos” (a dancer who plays all the parts).

128

I

t developed mainly in England, with roots in the “Commedia dell’arte”, and even the “Saturnalia” festivities of the Romans, where men dressed up as women and women dressed as men. The “Commedia dell’arte” was a humorous theatrical presentation performed by professional actors who travelled in troupes throughout Italy in the 16th century. It included music, dance, witty dialogue, and all kinds of trickery which contributed to the comic effects. In the original far earlier Roman productions a solo male dancer, wearing a long silk tunic and a “pallium” (still worn today by the Pope and very senior Roman Catholic clergy!), and with the use of masks and various other props, sang and danced all the roles, accompanied by a flute, with rhythm provided by an assistant beating time upon a “scabellum” (an iron shod boot!). The hand gestures of the performer were at times so expressive that the hands were compared to an eloquent mouth. Aelius Aristides (117-181 AD), a Greek orator, dismissed all this as being too erotic, and the dancers for being too effeminate. Many years later his countryman Libanius (314-394 AD) replied “On behalf of the Dancers”, pointing out how strong and fit one had to be to be a dancer. (The same may be said today for the ballet). The wordless nature of the performance helped it to spread throughout the Roman empire, where it remained popular until the end of the 6th century AD. In later years the popularity of the “Harlequinade” from the “Commedia dell’arte” equally owed much to being without words. Early English pantomimes were also wordless. THE HAND GESTURES OF THE PERFORMER WERE AT TIMES SO EXPRESSIVE THAT THE HANDS WERE COMPARED TO AN ELOQUENT MOUTH. However, as the genre developed in England, gradually evolving with words, an important part still continued to be played by the “Harlequinade” from the Commedia. But it was the introduction of words which led gradually to the demise of the Harlequinade. Until 1843 only “patent” theatres (The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and Lincoln’s Inn Field Theatre) were permitted to use words on stage. Once spoken dialogue spread to all theatres, puns and humorous word play swiftly made their appearance in pantomime, and the Harlequinade

became merely a brief epilogue, dwindling to a mere acrobatic and dancing display. This early European form of entertainment centres on five main characters: Harlequin, who loves Columbine; Columbine's greedy and foolish father Pantaloon, who tries to separate the lovers, helped by the mischievous Clown; and the servant, Pierrot. Much later it usually involved a chaotic chase with a bumbling policeman. The classical appearance of the Harlequin stock character involves a chequered costume and black mask, and the use of a “batte” or "slapstick", a magic wand with which to change the scenery, or thwart the plans of his master Pantaloon. He later developed into a prototype of the romantic hero. Pantomime first came to England in the 18th century as a form of adult entertainment. By the late nineteenth century, however, the popularity of the Music Hall gradually caused a number of changes, and the pantomime began to evolve as we know it today, with the audience working almost as hard as the actors. “Slapstick” is still very much to the fore, and in the late 19th and early THE “COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE” WAS A HUMOROUS THEATRICAL PRESENTATION PERFORMED BY PROFESSIONAL ACTORS WHO TRAVELLED IN TROUPES THROUGHOUT ITALY IN THE 16TH CENTURY. 20th centuries the traditional plots which centred on fairy stories and fables gradually became distorted with comedians and Music Hall artistes introducing their own routines. Gradually, as we have noted, Harlequin and the traditional elements of the “commedia dell’arte” vanished, whilst nowadays the “celebrities” and “resting” thespians who tend to turn up in panto do so without distorting the original tale too much. It gives an opportunity for what might be described as “topical humour”, commenting upon current situations in the guise of a popular fairy tale. The last “Harlequinade” in a pantomime took place at the Lyceum Theatre in London in 1939. Readers by now may have noted my use of the word “English” rather than “British”. Whilst the genre has undoubtedly spread

throughout Padre Peter, cleric for the British wedding ceremonies Isles, the form and regular and content contributor to SOCIETY of the Magazine performance remains essentially “English” in tone. Only the English could have conceived the “Pantomime Dame”, presiding over a world based upon fables and fairy stories, in which everything is turned upside down. (“Brexit” springs to mind!) Equally, in its early stages, the influence of “The Mummers’ Play”, based loosely upon the legend of Saint George and the dragon, may clearly be seen, with its coarse humour, sexual innuendo, stage fights and fantastical creatures. It is a glorious English hotch-potch! It has, nevertheless, spread abroad to English speaking countries and, surprisingly, even to France. “SLAPSTICK” IS STILL VERY MUCH TO THE FORE, AND IN THE LATE 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURIES THE TRADITIONAL PLOTS WHICH CENTRED ON FAIRY STORIES AND FABLES GRADUALLY BECAME DISTORTED WITH COMEDIANS AND MUSIC HALL ARTISTES INTRODUCING THEIR OWN ROUTINES. In a number of places like Ireland, as in Britain, pantomime is popular with amateur dramatic societies alongside the professional theatre. Despite once being hugely popular, since the middle of the 20th century the genre has declined in Australia, but is still popular in Canada, whilst in the United States the earliest pantomime production took place in New York in 1808, followed by Philadelphia in 1824, and Baltimore in 1839. The United States also saw the longest running pantomime in history (naturally!) between 1868 and 1873, clocking up 943 performances (even 1200 according to one source). Zsa Zsa Gabor appeared in panto in 1993 in Los Angeles. The genre’s traditional ability to adapt to local circumstances is shown by the fact that since 1941 the National Pantomime of Jamaica has produced shows in Kingston strongly influenced by aspects of Jamaican culture, folklore and history, with international stars like Sir Willard White making an appearance.
