PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Now that September has arrived, we can look back on the summer and say, with confidence, that it was surely the best we have ever had on the Costa del Sol. Not only was the weather superb (so what’s new?), we enjoyed some really great parties and the music was just fantastic. Highlights included the king of disco, Nile Rodgers, soul balladeer Michael Bolton, Ne-yo setting Aqwa Mist on fire and the fabulous 80s nostalgia fest that was the Bananarama and Human League link-up. We all had some great times and now have some very happy memories of the lazy, hazy days of summer, 2013 style! In this, our September issue we pay tribute to Eva Longoria, Honorary Chairwoman of the Marbella branch of the Global Gift Foundation, a charity that has already done some fantastic work for needy families on the Costa del Sol. Eva has a wonderful record of being very approachable during the time that she spends in Marbella and this year was no exception. The Global Gift Foundation’s Gala Dinner at the Gran Meliá Don Pepe and the Charity Golf Tournament, held at La Quinta, raised a huge amount of money, which was immediately donated to several lucky local charities. On the subject of celebrities, we also bring you all the news of the latest batch of famous faces to head to ‘Marbs’ for their holidays. We are always delighted when local-boy-made-good, Antonio Banderas, returns for the summer holidays, along with his wife, Melanie Griffith and their family and this year was no exception.

There’s also an amazing 20 pages of pictures from some of the summer’s key society events for you to enjoy. Can you find anyone you know there – or even yourself?! There isn’t a man in the world who wouldn’t prefer to be driving a Porsche, so we asked our resident motoring author, Ian Kuah, if he wouldn’t mind taking the latest Porsche 991 GT3 for a spin and report on his findings. I think that you’ll agree that, as far as a working day goes, this was about as good as it gets. The Sala Group will shortly celebrate a milestone as it prepares to welcome a landmark client. The big countdown will take place over the next few weeks and the lucky punter who succeeds in being the one millionth through the door will win the prize of a lifetime. Read all about it in our Society Pinboard section.

2013
ver the past few years the Global Gift Foundation Marbella’s gala dinner has established itself as one of the charity events of the year.
With the promise of rubbing shoulders with the gorgeous Eva Longoria, the tickets for the sumptuous 1,000 euro a plate dinner at Marbella’s popular Gran Meliá Don Pepe were quickly snapped up by Marbella’s philanthropic glitterati, who raised a huge amount of money for the Costa del Sol’s many needy women and children. Eva was clearly in the mood to celebrate, tweeting on the day of the dinner, “So excited for the @ GlobalGiftGala in Marbella tonight!” For the event, the actress wore a striking sleeveless Reem Acra Fall 2013 beaded turtleneck gown. The Global Gift Foundation was founded by Marbella born Mariá Bravo and Alina Perlata, who was born in Nicaragua but raised in Los Angeles. Today it is a worldwide charitable phenomenon, hosting bigticket events not only in Marbella but also in Mexico, Cannes, San Antonio and Dubai. The evening, held on Sunday the 4th of August, was declared a

roaring success, with entertainment contributed by Nate James, one of the stars of The Voice (UK), Scottish soul and R&B singer Tallia Storm, The Lecheritas, at nine years old already confident crowd-pleasers with their hit, Take Me to Marbella and Spanish singer Sara Pi, who intriguingly favours Brazilian flavoured R&B. Actor Shemar Moore, star of Criminal Minds, was recognised at the event for the sterling work he has done for Multiple Sclerosis charities, an involvement that stems from seeing the damage that the disease can do at first hand, since his mother is an MS sufferer.
20
Former Scottish rugby star, Thom Evans took to Twitter to offer his first impressions of Marbella and to say, “It was a pleasure to host the @ GlobalGiftGala last night. Thank you to @EvaLongoria for all the amazing work you are doing.” At this star-studded event even the food had a celebrity connection; Michelin-starred chef Dani Garcia was persuaded to take a turn on the red carpet in his chef’s whites to the delight of every gastronome present. This was the fourth consecutive year that Eva Longoria had been Honorary
Chair of The Global Gift Philanthropic Weekend and, in conjunction with her Co-Chair, Vincent del Bosque, she was instrumental in ensuring that the events which, for the first time, included a Celebrity Golf Tournament on the day before the gala dinner at Marbella’s prestigious La Quinta Golf Club. Since the Costa del Sol’s nickname is the Costa del Golf, it was only to be expected that the golf day should attract so many participants, all eager to enjoy playing a round with Eva.
Given that his father, Brian, was a professional golfer who won a few opens on the European tour and his cousin, Radio 2 DJ and golf fanatic, Chris Evans, it was hardly surprising that Thom Evans cut a convincingly competent figure on La Quinta’s course and clearly enjoyed the day. Possibly not quite as much as the many women who gathered to watch the former rugby star strut his stuff on the greens and fairways. The Global Gift Foundation prides itself on distributing 100 per cent of its donations to charity and the GGF team wasted no time in handing out the money raised at August’s events: several lucky local charities have already received large cheques. The organisers were astounded by the support that the gala dinner and golf day received, not only from the participants but from the very generous sponsors, which included Audi España, Iberia Líneas Aéreas, Yoka Iizuka, Gran Meliá Don Pepe, Dani Garcia Catering, Nikki Beach Marbella, L’Oréal Paris España, Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte France, Folli Follie and Café del Mar Marbella. THE ONLY WAY IS
Marbs Reported by Nicola McGeorge
This past month has seen a touch of glamour returning to Marbella with a host of celebs deciding to pay us a visit. From a birthday celebration for Hollywood heavyweight Antonio Banderas to Eva Longoria strolling hand in hand with her new beau in the Old Town, they just can’t seem to keep away We all know that Eva Longoria was in town to host the Global Gift Gala but it was the fact that she decided to make this the first public event that she has attended with her new boyfriend, Florida entrepreneur Ernesto Arguello, that got the paps in a frenzy. The Philanthropic Weekend kicked off with a celebrity golf tournament at La Quinta Golf Resort. The next evening the Gala was held at the Gran Melia Resort Don Pepe and the after party at Nikki Beach. The gorgeous couple also took time out to explore Marbella’s Old Town hand in hand and chill out on the beach. Image courtesy of solarpix.com
Melanie Griffith and her husband Antonio Banderas chose to celebrate their birthdays (which fall only one day apart), with close friends and family in Marbella. After enjoying an intimate meal with friends such as the Argentinean model Valeria Mazza and her husband Alejandro Gravier, they were treated to a surprise joint birthday cake topped with two candles and an impromptu rendition of Happy Birthday from their friends on microphones. All of which was, of course, captured on mobile phones by onlookers. Feliz cumpleaños! Image courtesy of solarpix.com
Antonio Banderas was spotted buying a ring in Puerto Banús for his wife’s birthday present. After 16 years together it’s lovely to see that romance is still very much alive in their relationship. The day after their birthday celebrations it was back to business, with Antonio hosting the fourth Starlite Benefit Gala.

Little Mix star
Leigh-Anne Pinnock flew
straight to Marbella after her gig in York to celebrate her footballer boyfriend, Jordan Kiffin‘s birthday at Ocean Club. Wearing a retro polka dot bikini, which showed off her killer curves, she partied up a storm at the Sintillate Champagne spray party.

Wow what a difference a year makes! Only 12 months ago Masterchef presenter Gregg Wallace was papped on the beach in Barbados, looking slightly on the larger side. Since then he has joined weight watchers and lost over three stone. He even tweeted “I got papped on the beach last year when I was fatter. No one’s bothered now I’m sexier. Oi paps, my slimmer belly is now in Marbella!” He was all smiles as he strolled around Banús with his new girlfriend, Anne-Marie Sterpini, who is 21 years his junior. Ah, maybe THAT was the real reason for his Cheshire cat grin. Image courtesy of solarpix.com
Grammy award wining singer and songwriter Ne-Yo decided to take in some sights before his performance at superclub Aqwamist. The night before the show, he and his entourage enjoyed a meal at La Sala. Ne-Yo was happy to take photos and chat with all the staff and customers, making him the most popular celeb to have visited La Sala. Then he was off to Olivia Valere where superstar DJ Avicii was banging out the tunes. With no rest for the wicked, the next day Ne-Yo headed down to Sala beach to chill out before he rocked Aqwa Mist. You are welcome back anytime, Ne-Yo. Image courtesy of solarpix.com

THE ONLY WAY IS
Marbs
The Swedish DJ, remixer and record producer Avicci doesn’t seem to have been out of the Top Ten for the past couple of years, so you can imagine the hysteria when we heard he would be performing in Marbella. Ranked No. 3 on the Top 100 DJs in 2013, his set at Olivia Valere blew the roof off. There were high expectations for his set performance, light shows, special effects and overall crowd atmosphere. These were not just met - they were completely blown out of the water. Images courtesy of pedrojaen.com
Unless you have been living under a rock, you would know that Enrique Iglesias was scheduled to hit the town for a sell-out gig at the Starlite festival. Despite turning up an hour late he pulled off a sensational performance. The Spanish heartthrob was later seen enjoying a meal at the luxurious Sea Grill restaurant in Puente Romano hotel, before he and 12 of his buddies joined owner of the Marbella Club and Puente Romano, Daniel Shamoon at Suite nightclub. Obviously loving the Marbs nightlife, Enrique also popped in to see French DJ Bob Sinclair’s knockout session at Olivia Valere. This is a guy who knows how to party! Images courtesy of pedrojaen.com
This is supermodel Naomi Campbell’s second visit to our shores in less than a month. Photos were circulated worldwide of the 43 year-old strutting her stuff at Puro Beach club in a gorgeous white Melissa Odabash ruffled bikini. With her body looking better than ever, her ex billionaire Russian mogul boyfriend must be full of regrets. We were pleasantly surprised that Miss Campbell had opted for the cheapest sun-beds that Puro has to offer - has the notorious diva toned down her excessive demands? After a day chilling out on the beach it was off to bust some moves on the dance floor at Olivia Valere, where superstar DJ Avicii was on the decks. Heartbreak? What heartbreak? And, even more pertinently, Vladimir Doronin who? Images courtesy of pedrojaen.com

Ben Affleck has just been cast as Batman in
the sequel to Man Of Steel. The first film told the story of Superman, portrayed by Henry Cavill and was made to reboot the Superman series; this second film will see the two superheroes meet onscreen for the first time. The producers have received both praise and criticism for the casting of Affleck, who previously starred as a superhero in the notorious flop, Daredevil. However, with Affleck’s acting and directing status on the rise, courtesy of the Oscarwinning Argo, which he directed and acted in and the highly praised The Town, in which he had a leading role, here’s hoping that Ben lives up to the producers’ expectations and delivers a believable performance as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

The new film featuring One Direction hit the cinemas last month and fans have gone crazy for the film and its five leading men. The boys all turned up suited and booted for the world premiere in London and pleased over 70,000 fans, some of who had camped out for days to get a glimpse of the ‘super-group’! Supporting them were various family members, fellow X Factor contestants including JLS, Diana Vickers, and Little Mix, as well as mentor Simon Cowell. Three of the boys’ girlfriends were there to support their boys, including Zayn’s popstar fiancée Perrie Edwards from Little Mix.

The original members of the Sugarbabes, Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan re-formed last year to create an eponymous new group. Many fans believe the girls should still be called the Sugarbabes, as the new members of the group have not been in the band since the beginning as these three stars were. Their first single, enitled Flatline, is released this month and the girls are hoping that it will bring them some chart success. Their album should be released at the beginning of next year.
Soap star Chris Fountain was sacked last month from his role as Tommy Duckworth on Coronation Street due to music videos he released as his alter ego, The Phantom, in which he trivialised rape and violence. Fans of the show have been in two minds as to whether the sacking is fair or not, as two other stars have been in court on charges of actual rape and have yet to suffer disciplinary action from the show’s producers. Unexpected baby news shocked the celebrity world last month, as Simon Cowell was revealed as the father of long-time friend and recent divorcee, Lauren Silverman’s forthcoming baby. The media mogul has been friendly with Silverman and her ex-husband for years, so the news of her pregnancy came as shock to the latter. Cowell has said in recent years that he was not the type to have children but earlier this year changed his mind and stated that a ‘mini-me might be a good idea’. Perhaps he and rumoured girlfriend Silverman had already started planning a family?

It’s been more than a decade since Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs and Jennifer Lopez broke up, and both have had children and numerous relationships since, but it seems the past simply cannot stay in the past. Lopez is a judge on American Idol and, if reports are to be believed, Diddy was offered a role as a judge on the talent show but turned it down because Lopez is already on the panel. Diddy reportedly told the show’s producers it was Lopez or him and, when they made it clear that J-Lo’s position was secure, he declined a position.

Society Marbella brings you the best of this month’s action, horror, romance and comedy. Don John John Martello is a handsome, old-fashioned type of guy who has earned the nickname ‘Don John’ from his friends due to his womanising ways and his ability to pick up a different woman every weekend. Sparks fly when these two get together and try to find true intimacy. Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza Insiduous 2 The original cast is back in this second instalment from the famed horror team of director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 The second instalment of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs picks up where the first film left off, as Flint Lockwood discovers that his evil machine, which turns water into food, is now creating mutant food beasts. Cast: Voices of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Andy Samberg, Neil Patrick Harris, Benjamin Bratt
Rush Rush is a biographical film about former Formula 1 racing drivers James Hunt and his opponent, Niki Lauda. The film depicts the story of their exhilarating lives both on and off the track in 1976, after Lauda’s catastrophic crash at the German Grand Prix and his quest to be fit to face Hunt at the culmination of the World Championships in Japan. Pushed to the point of psychological and physical exhaustion, the drivers know that if they make just one mistake, the price is their lives.
The Family Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer star in this crime comedy about a mafia boss and his family who are relocated to France as part of the witness protection programme after snitching on the mob. CIA Agent Stansfield is sent to keep them in line but the family cannot help but return to their old habits and decide to start settling problems in the only way they know how, thus enabling the mob to work out where they are hiding. Introducing SOCIETY MARBELLA’s favourite tracks set to hit the charts this month. Mechanical Bull by Kings of Leon The sixth studio album by American rock band Kings Of Leon, released this month, is entitled Mechanical Bull and has been entirely written and composed by the band members themselves. The first single, Supersoaker, unfortunately peaked at number 32 in the charts while the second, Wait for Me, only made it one place higher at number 31. Hopefully the album will perform better than the singles, as the band has a loyal following and previous albums have enjoyed far more success.
THE SPIN
The 20/20 Experience: 2 of 2 by Justin Timberlake The legendary king of cool and sophistication, Justin Timberlake releases his fourth studio album on the 30th of the month, the second half of a two-piece project. His third studio album, The 20/20 Experience, was released earlier this year and this album was produced so that the singer could release all the songs he wanted to on two connected albums. Ten songs feature on The 20/20 Experience and a further 11 appear on this album. The first single, Take Back the Night was released in July but only peaked at number 26.
Love in the Future by John Legend Love In The Future is the fourth studio album from American singer and song-writer John Legend and was produced by some very big names in the music industry including Legend, Kayne West and Dave Tozer. There were also some collaborations on the album between John Legend, Seal, Rick Ross and Stacey Barthe. John Legend has performed on many other musicians albums over the years and has established himself as an accomplished singer and musician. His first three albums did well in the charts and were all loved by his fans so this new album should do just as well.
Word of Mouth by The Wanted British boy band, The Wanted release their third studio album this month and, judging by the success of the first few singles, the album will do very well in the charts. The first single, Chasing the Sun which was written by rapper/singer Example, was released earlier this year and hit the charts at number two while the second, I Found You, peaked at number three. The third single of the album, Walks Like Rihanna, only made it to number four but has enjoyed much air-time on the radio and is a favourite with fans, while the fourth single, We Own the Night has so far made it only to the Top 10. The album also contains collaborations with many other musicians including Pitbull, Chris Brown, LMFAO, Dappy and Rita Ora.
The Last Ship by Sting The upcoming eleventh album from internationally renowned musician, Sting is released this month, his first full-length project since his 2003 hit, Sacred Love. The album, entitled The Last Ship, takes its name from Sting’s forthcoming play of the same name and explores themes of self-discovery, the complexity of relationships, the importance of family and the passage of time. Sting has collaborated with a number of other musicians on the album including Brian Johnson, Jimmy Nail, The Unthanks, and Kathryn Tickell.

Oh I love it when I discover a new talent! I am totally obsessed with eyeliner flicks and have been known to spend over half an hour (much to the annoyance of my other half) creating the perfect line. So, you can imagine my delight when I came across the über-talented makeup artist, Mily Serebrenik, who has launched a unique range of amazing stick-on, ready-to-go instant makeup. These include Les Classiques de Mily which are normal liners, in either black or five fab colours in a variety of styles. This means you can create a full-on 50s look in under a minute. STAY SHARP
SUN-DRENCHED
I am forever losing my makeup sharpener and consequently I am left with a load of blunt kohl eyeliners. Thankfully the ingenious team at Smashbox have managed to solve my little dilemma. Their ‘Always Sharp’ Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner self-sharpens every time you twist the cap off. Inspired by Smashbox pros who sharpen before every use on set, this first-of-its-kind pencil has a sharpener built right into the cap for a perfect tip, so you’ll always get a precise line. Pretty clever, huh? smashbox.com
Now that I have a little colour, I thought I would try out Dior’s Skin Nude Tan BB Creme SPF15. As my face tends to be several shades of pale lighter than my body, I need something that makes my face and body look connected whilst also giving me a slight glow; this product does just that. Basically it leaves me looking like I’ve had a little sun on my face and evens out my complexion. An ultra-natural makeup result with a slightly velvety finish, I will say, it is VERY important not to use too much - unless you want to look like Donatella Versace, that is. dior.com
A CHOCOLATE DELIGHT This autumn it seems brown is the new black. Make-up brand, Bobbi Brown has unveiled its new Rich Chocolate collection. My top pick is the Rich Chocolate Eye Palette, which offers a selection of eight brown shades in matte, shimmer and sparkle finishes. The shadows are designed to be worn alone, or layered for a smouldering look. Better than a box of truffles? Nearly, but my sweet tooth is always going to win. bobbibrowncosmetics.com

ROCKING IT
As it has been too hot to wear my hair down I have been experimenting with up-dos. With grunge being bang on trend I have enjoyed played around with different variations of quiffs. To get this look right it’s all about the products; I recommend spraying TIGI Bed Head Oh Bee Hive in the area that you have sectioned for the quiff. This is an innovative matte dry shampoo that provides lift and hold. Throw in a little backcombing and pin in place. A quiff looks best set against slickedback hair and TIGI Bed Head Up Front Rocking Gel Pomade creates the sleek look that I am after, without the stickiness. bedhead.com
THE
Mummy Tummy WORKOUT
W
hen Kate Middleton showed the world her post-baby bump, she probably had no idea that she had instantly inspired new confidence in women around the world. Here was one of the most famous and photographed females on the planet saying ´here I am, this is how it is´. Far from covering her body in a tent-like smock, Kate empowered women the world over by so confidently and obviously revealing her true self. Let’s face it, just 24 hours after giving birth to another human being weighing nearly 9 lbs, a mother´s body is still going to have its share of lumps and bumps, but it was the fearless demonstration of nature at play that really amazed many of us watching on TV at home. Of course, it’s natural for any new mum to want to get back into shape after giving birth. Many are often surprised and horrified at the change in appearance and feel of their body in the weeks that follow a birth, not surprisingly around the stomach area. Although exercise may feel like the last thing you want to do while adjusting to life as a mum, it does have benefits. For starters, it can boost your mood by increasing the levels of endorphins in your brain, protect you from aches and pains, give you more energy and improve your strength and stamina, which should make looking after your newborn easier. Importantly, if you do not do corrective exercise post-pregnancy then you have a very high chance of developing lower back and hip pain, in addition to finding it harder to shift that baby tummy.
38
Of course, exercise will help you to lose weight and regain your pre-baby figure. Start with short walks of about 10 minutes, building to 20 minutes as soon as you feel up to it. Your lower stomach muscle is the most important one to exercise after you have had
a baby. It works with your pelvic floor muscles to support your back and pelvis, crucial in helping to improve posture. There are 3 easy exercises that new mums can try at home: Activate your TVA (Transverse Abdominal) muscle from a four-point kneeling position, slowly drawing your belly button up towards your spine, holding for 3-5 breaths then relaxing your tummy. Repeat this exercise 3-5 times twice or three times a day. Side Leg Raises – lying stretched out on your side, remember to keep your hipbones vertical as you lift your leg. Hip Extensions – Lie on the floor with knees bent. Place your body weight on your heels, push through your heels and lift your hips up and then slowly lower back to the floor. Unless you have had a ‘C’ section, you should be able to start these exercises within 4-5 days of giving birth, and it’s not unreasonable to suggest that a 12-week post pregnancy exercise programme could save you a fortune in physiotherapist and doctors’ fees! A SPOT
OF BOTHER
It doesn’t matter how rich and famous you are, teenage acne doesn’t discriminate. Pop stars Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe are just a few of the young A-Listers who suffer from breakouts. Skincare specialist, Sofia Saide from Pure Skin Beauty clinic shares her expert advice on zapping those zits. Pure Skin has a large teenage clientele because... Acne is a very real problem for teenagers. People tend to see the problem as trivial, but to a teen it can seem like the end of the world and greatly impact their self-esteem. Some teenagers can be subjected to bullying, whilst others will isolate themselves. The reason more teenagers are coming to us for treatments and using our products is because their parents are already clients and know we deliver visible, longlasting results. Thus, when their children develop skin problems, especially during the teenage years, they trust that our facials and products will produce results. Our most popular treatment for congested skins is... The Triple Peel Facial and/or the Quadra Peel facial with infusion of Oxygen Plasma Potion from Ling Skincare New York: this facial works to exfoliate dead cells, thoroughly cleansing and purifying the pores and allowing the skin to breathe again. We also use steam followed by thorough extractions. Oxygen Plasma is then infused to help eliminate acne bacteria and accelerate cellular metabolism to help the skin repair itself. They are both very thorough facials, taking up to an hour and a half. We also offer a
shorter version of this facial, which takes about an hour for teenagers who don’t want to spend so long on the treatment couch, but we find most teenagers enjoy the pampering. Acne prone skin should only be treated by a skin specialist because... If a facial is performed by a qualified therapist who knows how to extract the skin properly and skilfully and recommend the correct home care products then it is beneficial to younger skin. However, if a therapist is not highly skilled and knowledgeable, then a facial at any age can be detrimental by further irritating the skin. I would advise teenagers to... Be diligent in properly cleansing and exfoliating the skin and using products that balance the oil glands by making the skin comfortable. According to Ling from Ling skincare New York’s philosophy, it’s important to use products that work to hydrate and balance the skin, so that oil glands don’t overproduce oil to clog pores and allow acne bacteria to build up. Remember also to change your pillowcase regularly and keep your hair clean, but my biggest tip would be - hands off! Constantly touching and prodding spots will cause them to become more inflamed and the infection will spread further. Our latest success story is... My client’s 15 year-old daughter, who was suffering from bad acne: she had become very self-conscious and her self-esteem was at an all time low. She came in for a facial every three to four weeks, as our normal skin cycle is 28 days. The Ling Triple Peel Facial helped
clean out her skin so that pimples could clear up quicker. A proper and thorough extraction of an infected pimple will speed up the recovery time. If a pimple is deeply infected and is not extracted, the infected dark blood will remain as an unsightly blemish for many months. With consistent Ling facials and a proper home care regimen to soothe the skin, her skin cleared up and she regained her confidence. A personal skin care tip to treat and prevent acne is... To use the Ling Spotlight Papaya Peel five times a week. Use it as a mask for 10 to 15 minutes; the papain enzymes work well to soften the skin, oil oxidation prevents clogged pores and helps to keep skin clear from blemishes. Follow with Ling Ginseng Therapy Moisture Mask, storing in the fridge for a cooling effect to moisturise the skin, thus calming the oil glands. You can even leave this on when you sleep.

Art Deco
GLAM
By Wood Hairdressing The 1920s are back in a big way, thanks to the new production of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. With most of Hollywood adapting this roaring style, it wasn’t long before the trend filtered through to the wedding world. This month, Wood Salon has created a bridal up-do, which is the perfect marriage between modern and romantic, the ultimate chic choice for a flapper-inspired affair.
When it came to planning her wedding, there wasn’t any doubt in her mind that the team at Woods would be in charge of her bridal hairstyle. Although Zoe would be colouring and cutting Kirsty’s hair before the big day, the up-do was going to be in the hands of the very experienced bridal hair stylist, Myra.
The bride, Kirsty, has been a regular client at Wood Salon for years. “ I have lived all over the place,” she confesses. “However, Zoe Woods is the only hair stylist who truly understands my hair and she actually listens to what her clients want. My hair is very thick and unruly, but with Zoe’s unique cutting and colouring skills she has actually transformed my mane into something to be proud of.”
“Then, as the hairdresser, this is the point when I take over,” adds Myra. “I know the theme, have seen the dress, so I can now start to plan the look. With the fact that I had to incorporate vintage hair slides and make sure that the antique earrings were also on show, it really was a dream job for me. I loved the process from start to finish.” The Woods team always creates three looks for a bridal trial however, with Myra nailing the look on the first go, Kirsty didn’t want to see any other options. It was perfect, everything she had hoped for.
“It is my job to create a hairstyle that reflects our client’s personality and ties in with the overall look and feel of their day,” explains Myra. “I always ask to see the dress before I start planning anything. Even if it’s just a hairstyle for a night out, I prefer to see the dress. I take into account the texture of the fabric, the style statement the dress is making and then add the client’s personality into the mixture.” Kirsty has decided on a 1920’s theme and, being a bit of a rebel bride, she wanted to leave her hair down for her big day. “Myra pointed out straight away that if we factored in the heat and how heavy my hair is, having my hair down would be a disaster. Plus once she had seen the dress she was adamant that Photo by jeremystandley.com
only an up-do would work. I, of course, listened to her expert advice and left it in her very capable hands.”
The final result was a sleek, old Hollywood style, which was seriously swoon-worthy. With loose fingerwaves gently framing her face, Kirsty was soon channeling a 1920s screen siren. The timeless and elegant wedding hairstyle was perfectly complemented by the Art Deco-inspired hairpiece. Myra added a final twist by incorporating a plait into the hairstyle for a more romantic look. “I have to say, forget the dress - it was my hair which was the talking point on the day,” admits Kirsty. “Even the male guests were commenting on it. My hair was definitely one of my wedding day highlights.” Kirsty rocked her interpretation of a ‘20s style and it was a total roaring success Wood Salon Tel: 952 771 791/ 645 089 399 wood-hairdressing.com

COOK
in Style
CONTINUED
As a follow up to last month’s Kitchen’s article, I’d like to share a few more cool ideas of kitchen furniture and appliances.
First of all I think that a kitchen should have a great cooker, so let’s start with AGA.
4-Oven AGA model
Iconic design and inimitable cooking performance aside, the beauty of this cooker is that it takes full advantage of off-peak electricity, storing it through the night in specially designed heat bricks located deep inside the cooker. The stored energy is then used to heat your AGA throughout the day. Like all AGA cookers, the 4-oven 30-amp version is cast iron. It’s this iron that radiates the heat through the ovens and hotplates, allowing it always to be instantly available for use and preventing food from drying out, while retaining its goodness and enhancing its natural flavours. The ambient heat it provides keeps kitchens and even adjoining rooms deliciously warm. agaliving.com

Miele’s MultiSteam
Perfection to suit personal tastes - the Miele steam oven is an all-round expert and the perfect partner for an oven and a hob. As the cooking times for steaming and boiling are identical, you do not have to change your cooking habits. You can make starters, soup, fish, meat, vegetables, side dishes and puddings on their own or together as part of a complete meal in one process. Individual preferences – firm or tender, moist or dry – can also be catered for in a Miele steam oven. Miele’s MultiSteam technology with external steam generation ensures perfect results. Eight steam inlet ports enable fast generation of steam and steam distribution and therefore short heating times and uniform cooking results.
Pureline warming drawer – another great asset for those who enjoy cooking and serving. Receive your guests with warm plates on the table, then use it to warm your coffee cups or keep food hot.
And it goes without saying that their built-in coffee bean marchine, OneTouch and OneTouch for Two, is a great choice for coffee lovers. Fully-automatic perfection: one or two coffee specialities at the touch of a button. The OneTouch for Two function allows two glasses of latte macchiato or two cups of cappuccino, coffee or espresso to be made at the same time. Using the OneTouch function and pressing the button twice produces two hot drinks in one process, delivered conveniently via the central spout.

If it’s August it must be Marbella Fashion Week! This year’s fashion fest was even better than last year’s, with some outstanding contributions by OJT Designs, Lady Muck Couture, The Pussy Doll Palace and Virgin Rebel from the UK, Viginity Couture from Latvia and Tresor Paris. Fashionistas turned out in force to enjoy the catwalk action at Nikki Beach and they were not disappointed. The models strutted their stuff as the seriously fashion-conscious took style notes. Presented by Adam Ryan, founder of Marbella Fashion Week, this wonderful display of cutting-edge couture proved once and for all that the Coast can put on a show as creatively inspired as anything that might be seen on the catwalks of Milan or Paris.

With the audience now warmed up, the mics were handed over to Phil Oakey, Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley of The Human League. They performed Mirror Man, Fascination, Love Action, Open Your Heart, and The Lebanon. Saving the best till last, they returned for an encore - their No.1 hit, Don’t You Want Me. Sponsors, Costa Cosmetica Beauty, were delighted to be partnered with such a prestigious event and a great night was had by all.

ts rev limit is 9,000rpm. Let that sink in for a few seconds. With its peak power developed at 8,250rpm, a full 250rpm higher than last year’s RS 4.0, the 3.8 litre flat-six in the new GT3 is the highest revving production Porsche motor ever. The RS 4.0 had the last incarnation of the Metzger engine, and now a heavily tweaked version of the current generation 9A1 direct-injection flat-six motor takes the baton and runs with it in the 991 GT3. A long list of lightweight reciprocating and rotating parts within the engine make for lower inertia, while new manufacturing processes and coatings for the hard-working valve-train components ensure robustness over time. The big numbers are 475hp at 8,250rpm, with peak torque of 440Nm at 6,250rpm. A heady specific output of 125hp per litre in a car weighing 35kg more than before translates into a 0-100km/h time of 3.5 sec with 315km/h all out. If you take the 9,000rpm rev limit as an absolute, it is then down to just how quickly and willingly the motor gets there in every gear that defines its character.
With an open road in front of you, the new engine fairly screams round the rev counter in the intermediate gears while the brilliant seven-speed PDK gearbox ensure that the 475 able bodied horses provide an uninterrupted push in the back. The deep baritone roar from the twin central exhaust outlets is overlaid by a fearsome battle cry of induction, valves and high-lift cams running faster and faster as they convert air and fuel into forward motion like never before in a road legal naturally-aspirated Porsche motor. From 6,000rpm to cut-out, the scream of the motor takes on a feral shriek best described as the sound of ripping silk amplified by a world class sound team. This is truly one of the most spine tingling engine notes out there today.

Wend your way along a challenging road, and the audible pitch of the motor as controlled by your right foot defines your smoothness, confidence and ability to read the road. And yet, this is not the most deeply impressive aspect of the new GT3. That is the province of the seven-speed PDK dual clutch gearbox, completely revised from its Carrera roots by the Weissach engineers for this much more highly focused application. Upshifts are so fast and seamless that you just hear the motor drop its revs while your rapid forward motion continues uninterrupted. The system also blips the throttle perfectly going down the 窶話ox, making you sound like a hero to onlookers. Importantly, should you choose to use the gear lever instead of the paddles, the shifter now works the correct way in manual mode; forwards for a downshift and vice versa. In addition, some aspects of automatic gearboxes that are inappropriate to a hard-core sportscar have been edited out. One is kickdown, the other is the tendency to backshift down a ratio if you short-shift, but then go to full throttle.
81
TORQUE TALK The latter is something that annoys me intensely with other cars, and makes them trickier to drive in slippery conditions. With the GT3’s PDK set-up, the decision of which gear ratio to be in at any one time is solely yours. I can hear the purists screaming from the rooftop about the manual gearbox and clutch being the last vestige of connection between the car and driver, but the reality is that Porsche has now embraced the cold, hard fact these items are relics of a bygone era. GT model chief, Andreas Preuninger, told me that the PDK system was only decided on quite late in the day, and as a purist, he had to be personally convinced beyond any doubt. During the in-house technical shootout the empirical fact emerged that the dual-clutch gearbox is worth 4.0 seconds a lap on the Nurburgring, which in motorsport terms, is an eternity. Ultimately, the Porsche GT3’s mission statement is about going fast, and PDK makes it faster, period. To underline the new GT3’s superiority against the stopwatch, Porsche test driver, Timo Glück, recently set a benchmark lap time of 7 min 25 sec on the Nurburgring. This is 7.0 sec faster than both the 530hp twin-turbo 997 GT2 of 2007 and the legendary Carrera GT! To put this in perspective, it is also 2.0 sec a lap faster than the outgoing 500hp GT3 RS 4.0, and 6.0 sec faster than its RS 3.8 predecessor. At this point, I need to underline the fact that this blinding lap time was achieved
82
with a production 475hp naturally aspirated engine, powering a 1,430kg car. However, none of that extra weight is in the wrong places, since the extra 20kg that the PDK gearbox adds to the cars dry weight is compensated for by the removal of a similar amount from the engine. The PDK Sport button on the centre console is tempting, as is the firmer setting for the PASM active damping, but a few minutes with these activated confirmed my suspicions that they are best left for the racetrack. Sport is in general a bit too trigger-happy for real world roads. While the firmer suspension setting is normally only appropriate on billiard table smooth roads or the racetrack, it activates the standard fit dynamic engine mounts that tighten things up for optimum cornering performance. When you move the GT3’s steering wheel away from the straight ahead you notice two things. The first is that
TORQUE TALK
this is by far the best iteration yet of the electric power steering Porsche introduced with the 991 Carrera. The second thing is the perfect link between the steering and chassis turn-in rate. There is no lag between the front and rear axles. Turn the wheel, and the car turns all of a piece with unerring balance and stability. The trick here is the electro-mechanical rear wheel steering system that allows the rear wheels to move about 1.5 degrees. This creates the dynamic advantage of shortening the cars effective wheelbase at low speeds for increased manoeuvrability, and then lengthening it when you pick up the pace for enhanced stability.
This pre-loads the rear tyres, removing the latency where the rear end usually takes a just perceptible second to follow the front when you turn the steering wheel off centre. On the road, you don’t feel anything out of the ordinary, and it simply feels better. Should the on-board sensors identify that you are drifting the car intentionally it will help you here too, making showboating even easier. As Porsche found during high speed endurance testing at Nardo, another advantage of the rear wheel steering system is lower and more even tyre wear as the tyres do not have to work so hard in a given situation.
Under 50km/h the system moves the rear wheels in the opposite direction from the steered front wheels, which makes the car more agile at parking speeds.
The actual levels of mechanical grip are so high that a responsible driver will not find them on a public road, where the GT3 simply goes where you point it. I am really looking forward to exploring the cars limits on a racetrack.
Above 80km/h, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the steering.
Extra stability at speed is conferred by a 20 percent increase in aerodynamic
downforce, which translates to around 120kg effective downforce at 200km/h. The drag coefficient is 0.33. A major contributor towards resolving the age-old conflict between low speed agility and high speed stability, the rear wheel steering system is a significant factor in the new GT3’s faster lap times against its lighter and more powerful predecessor. A smaller but no less significant help to handling consistency is the new electronically controlled variable ratio limited slip differential. This apportions traction to the individual rear wheels with much greater accuracy than the old style fixed ratio unit, and runs as an open differential on the overrun for improved stability.

Porsche test driver, Timo Glück, recently set a benchmark lap time of 7 min 25 sec on the Nurburgring. This is 7.0 sec faster than both the 530hp twin-turbo 997 GT2 of 2007 and the legendary Carrera GT! The other positive GT3 chassis trait goes beyond its handling and grip, which are on a different planet from before. Considering its track-biased mission in life the GT3 impresses with its civilised ride on public roads. I still cannot believe that Porsche has managed to make a hard-core machine like this, shod with massive 20-inch wheels and sticky trackday rubber, ride so well. This is no mean feat when you consider that the GT3 sits on 9.0J and 12.0J x 20-inch lightweight forged alloys shod with 245/35ZR20 and 305/30ZR20 rubber. These are the very latest generation Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres in a Porsche specific N0 compound. The damping is simply superb, absorbent at low speeds and anchoring body movement with real resolve when you are pressing on. I drove a bog standard VW Scirocco on 18-inch wheels the day after and wondered where the suspension had gone! Gripes? By default, the PDK gearbox needs to be partnered with a dual-
mass flywheel. But you feel the extra weight of this when you blip the throttle in neutral, and by the way you sense the engine is having to drag a heavy flywheel towards its heady redline. The new motor is way better than the 997 GT3 Gen 1 or 2 in this respect, but despite its high rev capability, still does not possess that racecar like feeling of super light engine internals and the more aggressive revving that so endears me to the single-mass flywheel equipped RS 3.8 and RS 4.0 models. Perhaps Porsche will have solved this final engineering dilemma by the time the GT3 RS is ready next year?
The new Porsche GT3 may be a road legal homologation special, but it is also well mannered enough in daily use to throw the dynamic shortcomings of much more expensive supercars into stark focus. It is a stern warning to their makers that being ‘exotic’ is no longer an acceptable excuse. The new GT3’s terrific everyday usability combined with the flipside of hardcore racetrack ability is what leaves such a big positive impression. No one trick pony, this car showcases the Porsche GT team’s ability to produce a well-rounded, user-friendly car that excels and impresses on many levels. At this point in time the new GT3 is the best drivers’ 911 ever.

Life

n 1204, Sir Giles Whimple, clad in chain mail, descended the stairs one morning to join his host, the Count of Flanders. Inadvertently, he sat upon his breakfast oatcake, thereby inventing the Belgian waffle. This story may not be true, but bread made from oats, barley and rye was far more common in 13th century Europe than bread made from wheat. This was known as “Maslin bread”, and was sufficiently expensive to be used only on high days and holy days, and certainly not at breakfast before a joust. The technique of breadmaking, as it had been from earliest times, was to mix grain flour with water, shape it into a flat cake, and bake it on a hot stone. This produced the unleavened bread about which we read in the Bible. It was the discovery of wheat by the ancient Egyptians which made leavened bread possible. The Egyptians themselves were not sure of the precise nature of the raising agent. Perhaps at some stage some yeast spores had drifted onto a pile of prepared dough, but from then on they carefully preserved a portion of dough from each day’s bake to incorporate in the next. Even today, this is the method used in the production of “French bread”. At a very early stage in their history the Egyptians boasted of as many varieties of bread as we know today, and when in about 1500 BC the bread oven was invented, their ingenuity knew no bounds. A man became known
by his “number of breads”, and for hundreds of years wages were paid in bread and beer (known to the Sumerians as “liquid bread”!)
A peasant received three breads and two jugs of beer daily, whilst an important official could receive an annual salary of 900 fine wheat breads, 36,000 flat breads and 360 jugs of beer.
They exported wheat to Greece, whose poor soil produced only rye and barley, but which had adopted the technique of the bread oven, which expertise they handed on to the Romans. The Sahara, now a desert, formed part of the massive grain lands of the Roman Empire. The Romans took their bread very seriously. Pliny wrote: “In some places bread is called after the dishes eaten with it, such as oyster bread, in some from its special delicacy, as in cake bread, in others from the short time spent in making it, such as hasty bread, and also from the method of baking, as oven bread, or tin loaf, or baking pan bread”. Who today has not bought a tin loaf?! Here in the Iberian peninsula the Celts tended to add ground acorns to their flour, and borrowed the technique of
using beer froth as a leavening agent from the indigenous Iberians. They also adopted the bread oven.
COSTA CUISINE
The conquering hordes which overran the later Roman Empire had no room for such subtlety. Like the Scottish raiders of northern England, a few flat oat cakes sufficed, which could be eaten in the saddle or stewed into porage. What remained of civilisation now became centred on the monasteries, where the art of baking was preserved. From the so called “Dark Ages” (which, in fact, were anything but) to the present day, bread has formed a staple of diet. By feudal law, the Lord of the Manor was obliged to bake his tenants’ bread; only he possessed an oven. He became known as the “Hlæford” (loaf keeper), whilst his wife was the “Hlæfdigge” (loaf kneader), which terms actually still exist to this day in the titles “Lord” and “Lady”. Gradually, the lord’s duties extended to grinding the flour; which duties he passed on to the miller. These worthies soon became known for their dishonesty, often diluting the flour with sand. Bakers were regarded as superior to millers, but even here we read of those who betrayed their trust. In 1327 one John Bryd was shown to have made a special moulding board, with a hole in the middle “and when his neighbours and others who were wont to bake their bread at his oven came with their dough or material for making bread… the same John had one of his household, ready provided for the same, sitting in secret beneath the table; which servant of his, so seated beneath the hole and carefully opening it, piecemeal and bit by bit craftily withdrew some of the dough aforesaid” The Bread Assize of 1266 fixed the weight of different loaves, and bakers found in contravention were drawn through the streets on a hurdle with the offending loaf hung around their necks. It is for this reason that many gave a small extra “makeweight” with each purchase, thereby giving rise to the expression “a baker’s dozen”, meaning 13. The authorities in all countries carefully regulated the Bakers’ art. The first Spanish Bakers’ Guild to be documented dates from 1396. Quite apart from the equity involved, such provisions highlighted the importance of the daily loaf. And bread, of course, is central to the most sacred rite of the Church, whether it be unleavened as in the Catholic and Anglican communions, or leavened as in the Orthodox. In the Middle Ages, bread served three purposes. One ate it. It was also used extensively
for thickening sauces. (Some recipes even today use this method, as in “Lapin a la flamande” where a thick slice of wholemeal bread spread with mustard is placed on top of the rabbit.)And it was used to eat off. These were known as “trenchers” (hence the expression “He’s a good trencherman” about somebody who likes his food). A trencher measured about 15 centimetres across, and was five to eight centimetres deep. Unleavened bread, being tougher, was preferred for this task. After the meal the diners either ate their plates – filled with all the rich sauces and gravies – or they were collected up and given to the poor. It was, however, considered the height of bad manners to nibble at your plate during the meal.

Tuk Tuk Asian Fusion restaurant offers culinary creativity at its best. Taking ingredients from across cultural boundaries and adding a touch of personal flair, the Tuk Tuk team creates dishes which reinvent classic Asian flavours with contemporary ingenuity. Like the different races and religions that make up the human race, fusion binds different regional cuisines into one glorious, outstanding flavour profile. This pretty much sums up my experience at Tuk Tuk. Since its glamour-heavy opening in June, the Marbella glitterati have flocked to this picturesque location in Aloha. The übersophisticated décor created by Foc Design wins hearts by creating an unbeatably eclectic ambience in which diners can luxuriate. With so much natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows, the challenge was to soften the interior to prevent the space feeling too clinical and open – an unusual request for a commercial location. The colours used are neutral but warm and light-reflecting textures and materials have been cleverly employed. By dropping capiz shell pendant lights over the tables and changing one side to a more casual, chill out area the team has transformed the interior space into a welcoming, comfortable venue without making it feel stuffy. A highlight has to be the glass kitchen, a fine spot to watch the chefs

hand-rolling sushi, perhaps, or preparing the popular Calamar Picante. The exterior is where the magic happens: Aloha Garden’s two tier waterfall is the restaurant’s backdrop, along with the resident ducks. With the addition of neutral tablecloths and ornate Asian-inspired parasols, TukTuk’s terrace has been transformed into a little oasis in the heart of Nueva Andalucía. After being shown to our table we were soon sipping the restaurant’s signature cocktails, listening to sultry acoustic versions
of well known classics, while the waterfall created an unprecedented atmosphere that is both intimate and festive - a cooling romantic delight for diners to enjoy before the eatery’s food wows their palates. We were sitting next to two Chanel toting socialites who told us that they had dined here for four evenings of their seven day holiday, while the family behind us proudly boasted that this was their third night on the trot. Even my Mum called me the other day to tell me that her neighbour had found this gem of a place where the food was to die for. Yes you guessed it, this was

also Tuk Tuk. The amount of returning clients speaks for itself. It was the special touches that set Tuk Tuk apart from the rest. The offer of complimentary Japanese fans to stop your makeup melting, jewelled handbag hooks to hold your latest Louis Vuitton, homemade crumbly coconut and cinnamon cookies served with coffee and even colouring books for the little ones. The staff is aware that happy children means that parents will stay longer. And now for the food: I know this is supposed to be a food review but dining at Tuk Tuk is much more than simply refuelling your body. It is a whole experience to be savoured, every detail specific and deliberate, the familiar combined with the exotic. The menu itself is a combination of current lifestyle trends and classic Asian dishes that ensures a unique experience every time. Head Chef, Kenneth Cabela has taken the culinary scene by storm, creating enchanting cuisine with a twist of fusion; bringing together quality Japanese, Thai, Korean and Chinese ingredients and spices to offer new dining experiences that reflect the Asian world. Tuk Tuk is one of the first restaurants in Marbella to venture away from the standard Chinese model that most of its competitors follow. We began our meal with the Thai Fish Cakes, which were the finest I have ever tasted - even better than my own and, believe me, mine are top notch! The combination of the salmon, shrimp and sole served with a spicy green curry sauce on a bed of sautéed mushroom pak choy, took the taste buds on a journey through layers of earthy, sweet and aromatic flavours. Next came the crowd-pleasing dish of cloud-light Squid and Spring Onion Dim Sum served with just enough tangy Thai mango relish. These little dumplings are fit for royalty. Our final starter was where the blending of traditional and fusion
elements were most evident; the deep fried Spring Roll filled with chicken, shrimp, mayonnaise and sweet and sour sauce, light in texture, yet deep and rich in flavour. If that hasn’t got your taste buds tingling, for our main course we opted for the assertively grilled and yet succulently tender Lamb Chops, accompanied by Sweet Potato Chips and Chinese Five Spice Sautéed Spinach with a cooling Coriander and Mint Dressing. Asian restaurants are usually let down by their desserts, so I was anticipating disappointment. However, to my surprise we ended on a high, with a sticky Banana Fritter rolled with palm sugar and offset by a Passion Fruit and Mango Sorbet, which created an interesting textural contrast. It was beautiful to behold and exquisite to consume. The attentive and friendly staff members are also on hand to provide you with wine suggestions for the perfect accompaniment to your meal. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily and from 4pm to 7pm it’s cocktail time. The musical tempo picks up and you can sample the creative concoctions from the resident mixologist. The location, diverse menu and seamless service combine to make this an ideal place to impress your guests. If you decide to get your fusion flavour fix at Tuk Tuk, the culinary sensation is bound to thrill. Nothing fortifies the eclectic and hungry soul quite as wonderfully as the Asian fusion cuisine at this much buzzed about restaurant. TWO LEGGED MUTTON By Padre Peter

he Middle Ages could be precarious times in which to live. Even being invited out to dinner could be fraught with danger. You might, for example, get a severe stomach upset from having drunk wine in which the filth of a sick dog’s ear had been mixed. Or you might be subtly warned off by small pieces of cat gut strewn across hot meat, so that they writhed and gave the impression of being worms. This activity could also, of course, pass as a practical joke, or April Fool, but in general there was at times very little to joke about.
94
COSTA CUISINE In the middle of the 15th century famine stalked the land. It was so dire in northern France that people were driven to make bread from diseased rye, and it is recorded that forty thousand people died screaming in the streets of Limoges, their skin on fire from what was known as ‘Saint Anthony’s disease’, as monks of the Order of Saint Anthony were rather good at treating it. This was ‘ergotism’, and in the Annales Xantenses for the year 857 AD we find a good description: “a great plague of swollen blisters consumed the people by a loathsome rot, so that their limbs were loosened and fell off before death.” This was, of course, most unfortunate, as the flesh was therefore clearly unfit to eat. A few centuries before, the famine was so rife that in both France and Germany, bands of butchers roamed the countryside, pouncing on unwary travellers with whom to stock their shops. Many were made into meat pies (Sweeney Todd! There is nothing new under the sun!). Others were cut up into toothsome joints, known in twelfth century China as ‘Two Legged Mutton’.
Some sections of society even acquired a taste for human flesh, and special recipes were devised with fancy names for dishes made from “young men and maidens, old men and children”. Clearly, a
baby would not require as much cooking as a hoary old grandfather!
Until the end of the fifteenth century cannibalism was rife in Bohemia, Silesia and Poland, giving an historical background to tales of vampires and werewolves. But not everywhere was so dark. Whilst Swedes lived on biscuits made from flour and reindeer blood, and Frenchmen lived on acorn bread, in some parts of Europe trade flourished, and in the markets even produce from the Crimea could be found, particularly salt and honey; two vital commodities from a land shortly to be welded into Greater Rus by Czar Ivan the Terrible. Amongst Europe’s forests game abounded, giving rise to such dishes as ‘venison frumenty’, made from strips of deer meat, boiled in milk with wheat, to which was added sugar, salt and the yolks of eggs. These three ingredients played a vital part in mediaeval cookery. Eggs were normally eaten fried or poached, and in an English cookery book we read “A fried egg does not need instruction, but dig not at it with your thumb turned down. Twiddle it about on the point of your knife”. This last comment may well have given rise to the invention of the omelette; too much twiddling! (But I remember once being confronted by a student holding a plate upon which
reposed a cracked, dried, yellow circular object. “What is that, child?” I asked benignly. “A fried egg” came the reply. My scream of anguish gave way to hysterical laughter as the Brummy student next to her said indignantly “See! I told you not to cut the fat off!”) Salt, then as now, was a vital commodity. It occupied an honoured place at table near the host, sometimes in magnificent salt cellars, giving rise to the disdainful expression that a person may be ‘below the salt’, and, indeed, that a man may not be ‘worth his salt’, a reference to the fact that under the
later Roman Empire it was possible to purchase a slave for a bag of salt. And the modern word “salary” derives from the latin “sal”, which formed part of a legionary’s wages. Edward
1st of England ran up a household bill of £1,600 in one year for salt and spices (about 60,000€ in today’s money) He probably ran up another bill for sugar, which was taking over from honey as a main sweetening ingredient as a result of the Crusades. These bullies and brigands, masquerading under the sign of the Cross, had encountered sugar first in Tripoli, where they sucked the canes. It caught on in a big way, and soon at great banquets a sweet confection was served after every course, much in the same way as sorbets tend to get served today. These were known as a ‘soteltie’, and were the showpieces of the mediaeval chef. Made of pastry and sugar, they represented anything from Saint George slaying the dragon to a Stag at bay; no doubt the atavistic forerunner of some of the more dismal productions of minor Victorian artists. They might also be mock pies, which opened to release flocks of birds, as commemorated in the nursery rhyme “Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie”. The birds were, of course, introduced after the baking, but one shudders to think of the condition of the pie’s contents having been sat on by four and twenty frightened avians. At the great ‘Feast of the Pheasant’ given by Duke Philip of Burgundy at Lille in 1454 to the assembled Knights of the Golden Fleece, an immense pie was opened to the festive strains of twenty eight musicians – perhaps the Middle Ages’ answer to the canned music of today. We know that Louis IX of France was partial to junkets, tarts and fruits, and as he is now a saint, perhaps he is enjoying his pie in the sky. (Fruit, incidentally, was
never given to children as they were considered to be phlegmatic; and fruit, being cold and moist, was therefore bad for them.) 95

Bhavesh and Rajvi enjoyed a magical three day celebration filled with fun, family and friendship.
MEANT TO BE…
We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. Who would have known that 17 years later, I would be married to him!
apart and we became quite busy in our own lives but we would call each other now and again over the years just to catch up until one day we decided to meet, enjoying each others company so greatly we began to spend more and more time together before falling completely and utterly in love.

Bhavesh and I met again after some years at a fitness centre and we recognised each other straight away. We started to meet up as friends and realised that we shared the same interests however our friendship drifted slowly

ings
Two years later, we had been well acquainted with each other’s family and friends and we had been on a few holidays together and we were definitely ready to take the next step in our relationship. It was just a case of him popping the question. Last September we

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do.
It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had Michknown ael and each other. He then sudMelanie two day denly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I marr celeb ied in ration family, a elega turned around to surro see what he was friend nt unded s by their pointing at,and andson, as I looked Dexte down, a light shone on to the rocksr.
True Blue
We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.
I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.
ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…
The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain! I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

After the sounds of the Spanish guitar and a few champagne cocktails later, guests were ushered to the reception on the outdoor terrace surrounded by olive trees with suspended Chinese lanterns and wicker hearts. Surprises for our guests, and our selves, were ‘wow’ factors starting with flamenco dancing, speeches and performances from our loved ones to large glow sticks on our entrance, a live bongo player over a UK DJ spinning the best beats and then a firework finale. went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

T HE FORGOT T EN ONES All the animals on this page are desperately in need of a loving home
BIG BOY
Five years old, he is the sweetest cat you will ever meet. He mothers all the orphan kittens, grooming them daily and loves nothing more than to sleep on Kim’s pillow. However, he does have feline immunodeficiency virus, so he would need to go to a home that understands his condition. Apart from this he is in perfect health and would make a wonderful addition to a family. Please give him the chance he deserves.
DORY AND MARLON
Dory is the beige pup and Marlon is the brown and white cutie: both are only six months old. They are the only survivors out of a litter of six found dumped in a bin, so they really deserve a forever home for being such fighters. Marlon is very bouncy and playful but loves his cuddle time where as Dory is very sweet and would love to be fussed with all day if she could. Both puppies thrive off human attention and are very sad at the shelter, as they are used to being in foster care. Foster mum, Kara Robertson admits, “ I looked after them until they had their vaccinations and I am worried sick about them at the shelter as I know they are not happy there. Dory’s face haunts me at night, I just want them to have constant love.” Let’s make Kara’s hard work worthwhile and find these perfect pups their new families.
SASHKI
This beautiful two year-old mixed breed was found abandoned with a broken foot. She is very easygoing and has completely recovered from her ordeal. Sashki gets on with everyone and is very trusting of humans. She is always the first to greet a new dog at the shelter and show them some kindness. She even stays with the more nervous dogs to show them support, so she would fit in well with a family that already has dogs. We think it’s now her turn to enjoy some much needed love and affection. Can you give Sashki a home?

NAME UNKNOW N
We are totally devastated to say that at the moment this gorgeous kitty doesn’t have a name; she really is ‘the forgotten one’ but we have given her the nickname of Ginger Rodgers. This beautiful girl is four years old, loves being around people but isn’t keen on other cats - she was brought in by her owner, who was moving back to the U.K. Although we are happy that she was brought to the shelter rather than just being dumped somewhere, we still can’t get our heads around people who just leave their animals behind, since a pet should be part of the family till their dying day. Ginger hates it at the shelter and doesn’t understand what she has done wrong to have been left there. Please can someone give her a new life and a new name?

HAPPY
ever after What makes all the sadness of working with abandoned, abused or neglected animals worthwhile is the success stories. Each month we will bring you uplifting and inspiring stories of the latest animals to be saved and re-homed through Kim’s Animal Rescue Centre tissues at the ready!
Ritchie
W innie Woo
was found by a river, where she had given birth to six puppies in the pouring winter rain; she was very nervous but allowed a kind lady to take her into her home. Kim arranged foster care with the amazing Kara Robertson, who spent five months building up Winnie’s confidence. During this time Winnie had to watch all but one of her puppies be re-homed. Thankfully, one of Kara’s friends from England fell in love with Winnie during her holiday in Spain and Winnie was soon on her way to her new home. She now enjoys playing in her huge garden and loves having home cooked meals every night, Winnie had endured a lot in her young life and she found it hard to trust again but she is now a very happy pampered princess with a family who adore her. She really did find her paradise.
was rescued from the pound in Fuengirola by Kim when he was about six months old. People were reluctant to adopt him because he seemed a little headstrong, but in fact he was just a boisterous boy who was extremely bored, so he was given special training on the lead and copious amounts of exercise to help with his excess energy. A couple came to see him regularly but, although the lady had fallen head over heels with Ritchie, her husband was still distraught over losing his elderly dog and was not ready to have another yet. Meanwhile, Richie’s photo was shared on Facebook by hundreds of people until one day he was seen by Mo from Blackpool and Richie’s life was never to be the same again. This is why we want to emphasise how important it is to ‘share’ photos of
animals that need rehoming: IT DOES WORK. A home check was set up and Ritchie’s suitcase was packed for his new life in Blackpool. Ritchie and his new Mum now rarely leave each other’s sides. He loves his daily walks on Blackpool beach where he can enjoy a good dig. Another of his favourite pastimes it to watch the swans on the canal and he is even allowed to climb aboard the boats if he has been very good. He has kept up with his training and both Richie and Mo are very happy to have found each other.
If you would like to adopt any of the above animals, we would love to feature you and your new furry friend in the magazine. Please contact: Kim’s Animal Rescue Centre, T. 603 138 715 https://en-gb.facebook.com/KimsAnimalRescue
A PART Y with a PURPOSE
Kim’s Animal Rescue Centre would like to invite you to their charity dinner at the fabulous Restaurante Valparaiso in Mijas, where you will enjoy a sumptuous menu in a stunning setting. With the team keen to let their hair down, entertainment is definitely a priority. The talented Zoe Hughes and Laura Johnson will have

you busting your moves on the dance floor and Astra the amazing belly dancer will be adding a touch of spice to the evening. Fantastic prizes can be won via an exciting raffle, including dinner, cocktails and a bottle of wine at The Streets of London Restaurant, dinner for two at Valparaiso and vouchers for Alberdero Beach Club. For the sports lovers, football, cricket and rugby memorabilia will be auctioned. There will be complementary champagne on arrival, plus beer, wine and soft drinks for the rest of the evening. There are over 300 animals at Kim’s at the moment, with more being brought in every day, so we need to raise as much money as possible. Want to know where your much needed dinero will
go? With the well now dry, Kim needs to buy massive amounts of water and, of course, fill the hungry stomachs of all the animals. The vet’s bill is the highest it has ever been, so this needs to be paid off. Kim needs your support now more than ever, as the centre is relying on food and water donations from day to day - it really is that desperate. We hope to see you there.

Easy to use and downloadable onto smart phones or tablets, available in Apple Store and for Android. Once downloaded, visit one of the restaurants where the Appedir logo is shown, scan the QR code printed on the menu and the whole list will automatically appear on the screen. COSTA WOMEN FIRST ANNIVERSARY Photos by Aleksandra Olejnik-Zelmanovits, olejnikzelmanovits.com
THE Women’s event on the Costa del Sol calendar of 2013. Costa Women Marbella’s 1st Anniversary Party on Friday 26th July at La VerandaVerde in the Royal Tennis Club in El Rosario saw 250 women gathering for the festivities.
There was a chance to sample luxurious olive oil from Verde Esmeralda, French wine from fun designer wine handbags by Marbella Wine Warehouse, desserts and patisserie from Café Canela & Miel and - carrying on the Russian theme - canapés from our hosts, La Veranda Verde.
The night was a celebration of the new Costa Women’s Russian group and its fusion with representatives of the 57 other nationalities that comprise the Costa Women community.
The fashionistas enjoyed couture by Yamaia and exclusive jewellery by Roger M Boutique, who generously arranged a prize draw for an exquisite piece of jewellery.
Members of Costa Women were delighted to be supported by Luks Marbella, the Russian social and networking club, which organised and sponsored the event.
Ali Meehan, Founder of Costa Women said, “Costa Women were delighted to be joined by members from our Costa Russian Women’s group. Wherever we have arrived from, women expats essential face the same challenges. The event provides a chance to connect, network and share our stories as well as give back to the Spanish community through a donation to Bancosol.”
The evening raised 1,320€ for Bancosol Alimentos, which represents a donation of 22,000 kilos of food into their food bank for the Málaga region. VIP tables, a silent auction of baskets of TIGS candles, nail art from Estrella Diamante and generous gift bags, thanks to 19 sponsors (see below for list) were sold to ensure fund raising success. The evening included entertainment courtesy of music from Veronica Malka, Oriental dance by Natasha Lunar and a Cuban Salsa display from Ramon and Marika Silverio, as well as Flamenco from the world famous Alejandro Rodriguez and magic tricks from Mago Seneco. DJ for the night was ‘Rob Rocks the House’ with Russian Radio Costa del Sol broadcasting live from the event. Displays of beautiful TIGS Candles and creations from the Lladro collection adorned the venue.
120
Marina Nitzak of Luks Marbella said, “I feel extremely fortunate and very grateful to be able to combine my different passions, friendships and interests under one happy roof today. This has been a fusion of my Russian origins and my business, with international friendships, networking and fundraising for the fantastic and very topical cause of our local food bank.” Costa Women were also celebrating the arrival of their 2000th member this week. The community has members in most parts of Spain as well as women who want to move to Spain as part of their long-term goals.
