PUBLISHER’S LETTER

I

t may still be cold and wintery out but with February comes Valentine’s Day and like most girls, the team at SOCIETY HQ have gone roses, red, heart, love and romancemad!

Our cover star, Bar Refaeli, turns up the heat in a selection of daring ensembles from Agent Provocateur and from girls “oooooos” and “ahhhhhhs” I’m not quite sure whether it’s the underwear or her body that they’re most envious of.

We’ve compiled a selection of gorgeous Valentine’s gifts for both guys and gals and our beauty expert, Jess Miles, offers the ladies some of her top tips for date night makeup. We’ve also rounded up some of SOCIETY’s favourite romance novels for the bookish romantics and, as usual, we have top tunes for whatever mood you’re in from The Wallem Brothers.

Fitness and spiritual guru, Margaret Buchanon, helps us to beat the winter blues with yoga and Elle Morgan, SiskoAkt and Glamour Hunter bring us some winter trends that will certainly brighten up these dreary months!

CREATIVE DIRECTOR Constanza Mtz.

We’ve met up with reality TV star, Natalie Richardson and celebrity hairdresser, Adee Phelan who were eager to discuss their latest exciting venture - Bardou. A salon that promises to bring luxury, decadence and efficiency together in stylish and sumptuous surroundings.

EDITORIAL ASSISTANT Charlotte Jacques

Natalie Rose Kern heads to Tarifa for a romantic escapade at the gorgeous El Riad hotel - and to Sierra Nevada for a snow break that turns out to be anything but romantic in this month’s Natterings! Our resident foodie, Bettina Campolucci Bordi lets us in on her sexy secrets about food – and tells us which foods are aphrodisiacs and might well spice up your love life! But not everyone’s gone all gooey over the 14th of February. The Serial Singleton gives us the lowdown on what to do and where to go in Marbella this V.Day if you’re dateless on lovers’ night! It offers a load of great ideas that you’ll enjoy even if you have got a significant other – although I wouldn’t recommend dragging your girlfriend paintballing if she’s expecting a romantic date!

We also attended some pretty amazing parties too this month, none more so than the spectacular opening party of DY Gym. We wish all the team at DY a very successful year ahead. Ian Kuah takes the Porsche Carrera 991/2 for a spin and Padre Peter rounds up Valentine’s for us with a history of Cupid! Of course there are all the usual events, fashion, food, news and reviews and yes, this issue is just bursting with love and romance – but it’s been great fun compiling it and I know you’re all going to LOVE it! Enjoy this fabulously romantic issue!

Raising

The Bar By Natalie Rose Kern

As we welcome the gloomiest month of the year and attempt to keep on top of our New Year’s resolutions (some of us in the SOCIETY office are having far more success than others!) the cold, early morning beach workouts and sugar and alcohol-free diets are starting to take effect and we’re getting geared up for baring our bodies in bikinis this summer. As the girls from Team SOCIETY swap their glasses of champagne for water, stilettos for trainers and weekend lie-ins for weekend sit-ups – we’ve needed all the encouragement and inspiration we can find to keep us fighting fit and persevering on this quest to get our dream bodies… so we’ve enlisted the help of our favourite underwear models and bikini-clad babes for motivation.

18

January has seen our computer screensavers, phones and even the walls of the office plastered with Victoria Secrets models, long legs and washboard stomachs enough to encourage us to swap burgers for salads - but when the brand new Agent Provocateur spring campaign arrived in our inboxes, we couldn’t help but drool and run an extra half hour on our evening jog. Bar Refaeli, the new face - AND BODY!!! – of Agent Provocateur is simply drop dead gorgeous. With a flawless creamy complexion, a teeny nipped-in waist, full breasts and legs that go on forever, she is the epitome of why we’re working out so hard… so who better to put on our cover and give us daily motivation all February long!

Beauty is Born Born in Hod HaSharon, Israel, to a secular Jewish family, Bar Refaeli’s modeling career begun when she was just eight months old, appearing in commercials and advertising campaigns. At the age of 15 she started her professional modeling career and appeared in campaigns for reputable brands Castro and Pilpel. In 2000 the blonde bombshell won the title of ‘Model of The Year’ in an Israeli beauty contest and from there her modeling career skyrocketed and she is now one of the most recognisable supermodels in the world.

She has also been the cover model for the coveted Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue – a prestigious accolade reserved for only the very hottest bodies in the world!

20

In 2012 Bar was voted #1 on Maxim magazine’s Hot 100 list, placing her above the most glamorous Hollywood movie stars and most sexy and sultry popstrells in the world. Since 2013, she has been the host of The X Factor Israel and is considered a national treasure in her native country, where she currently resides. According to Forbes Israel, she was the highest paid model in Israel in 2013, ahead of the combined modeling income of other Israeli models such as Esti Ginzburg, Gal Gadot, and Shlomit Malka. Refaeli has also received the World Style Award presented by the Women’s World Awards for her “natural elegance, sense of style and compassion”

L

ove and Life Despite her illustrious modeling career, it is her personal life that has received the most publicity and has grabbed the most memorable headlines over the years and 2016 has already seen her back on the front pages for two very different affairs. The first; an unfortunate tax evasion scandal and the second a very happy pregnancy announcement. The 30-year-old model, whose extensive portfolio also boasts an impressive acting career in both film and television and whose role as a television personality has won over her public has never been one to shun the spotlight and has had a bumpy ride with the media. She married family friend Arik Weinstein in 2003 and they were divorced in 2005 – a wedding considered a sham by the media in Israel, who suspected that this was a motion to avoid military service, for which she was fiercely criticised. After her divorce she began dating Hollywood heartthrob, actor Leonardo DiCaprio, and for six years they were widely regarded as one of the most beautiful couples in showbiz. But it was not all plain sailing as they were also one of the most ‘on-off’ couples in Hollywood, calling time on their relationship over and over, only to be reunited again months later. Bar finally married businessman Adi Ezra last September in a sumptuous, fairytale wedding in Israel. The two lovebirds tied the knot in a traditional Jewish outdoor wedding ceremony in front of more than 300 family members and friends at the Carmel Forest Spa Resort near Haifa and she claimed that it truly was “the happiest day of her life”

“Happiness is when you love who you are and you are able to accept yourself and others.” 21

appy ever after… Six months after her dream wedding, Bar posted a photo on Instagram of her positive pregnancy test stick with the caption; “2016 is going to be like…” followed by a baby icon and a bottle icon and then; “Happy and Healthy New Year!” What a perfect start to the New Year for Refaeli and a welcome antidote to the other less pleasant headlines. With a new husband, a baby on the way and a fabulous international campaign that sees her stunning physique splashed across billboards around the world, 2016 could well be her best year yet. As we gaze upon her gazelle-like form in the gorgeous collection by Agent Provocateur, we breathe a little sigh of relief as we remark that she’ll soon be piling on the pounds - and might look a little more like us mere mortals with a bit of tummy on her. …Although, possibly not. Supermodel, actress, TV personality, businesswoman, wife, mother… No matter what she does Refaelli will continue to be the best bar none-and that’s why we love her.

The Guys and Dolls

Valentine’s Special

GUIDE Single

to being …On Valentine’s Day!!! By The Serial Singleton

Most of this month’s issue of SOCIETY is dedicated to celebrating Valentine’s Day. Like Scrooge at Christmas, The Serial Singleton takes a ‘Bah! Humbug!’ approach to the 14th of February and suggests that you focus your attention and efforts on the vastly superior and infinitely more interesting Pancake Tuesday on February 9th – partners will often let you down, but pancakes never will. However, in the interest of sticking to the ‘New Year- New You’ diets that I’m sure you’re all on, I’ve come up with a bunch of activities for the single guys and dolls of Marbella.

Take some of my tips, girls and you’ll no longer feel ‘b*tch face’ coming on when your best friend asks, “So, what are you doing for Valentines? Oh, sorry, I forgot you’re single!” and then proceeds to describe the lengthy menu of delights her beau is laying on for her, including the predictable dozen roses (yawn!), a limo (really?) and dinner at the most exclusive restaurant (he chose there?) and then hints that maybe he’ll propose. Single guys face the onslaught of bragging friends who describe how much they’re able to spend on all of the above and heroic tales

of just how death defying it was to book the last limo in Marbella for the night. However, rather than become completely cynical and seeing as Valentines’ Day is all about lovey-dovey stuff, show yourselves some self-love Marbella Singletons, by planning indulgent treats for you and your single friends. After all, sharing is caring, and that doesn’t need to involve the serious spendfest that some people like to make of it. So, without further ado, as the circus ringmaster says, I present the SOCIETY Marbella guide to being single on Valentine’s Day.

Ladies First, Naturally!

TOO BUSY PAMPERING YOURSELF ANYWAY! 1.YOU’RE

Yes, you’re loving your body today with a pamper session. You’re spoilt for choice in Marbella but why not take yourself off into the hills of Ojén and the Thai-inspired Shanti Som retreat, or splash out at the Marbella Club Thalasso Spa. Start your pampering the day before with some hair repair at Reflections Hair, Nails and Skincare salon in Nueva Andalucia.

HAVE A CARRIE BRADSHAW 4.MOMENT!

Buy yourself a big ticket item, or do what Carrie would do and buy a superexpensive pair of shoes. There’s Jimmy Choo in Puerto Banús, or what about something slinky from Agent Provocateur – you might be writing your own version of “Sex in the City” after a trip to this emporium of sensuality.

2. HAVE A ‘GIRLS-ONLY’ DAY OUT 5. ESCAPE FOR THE WEEKEND! Meet up for a day out with your single girlfriends. Visit the Sunday market at Benahavís then head over to Nueva Kaskada for a long leisurely lunch with a fantastic view of Marbella. Finish the day off with a film at your house or the Cine Teatro Goya. Or, book a beautician to make a home visit – Jess Miles of The Beauty Spot will happily share her make-up tricks with you and your friends.

A JUICY THRILLER IS MORE 3.EXCITING

Sleep in and vow to spend the day in your pyjamas reading a juicy thriller from Bookworld in Puerto Banús, where you’ll find a really tasty selection of titles. Remember to turn off phones and Facebook until 15th February and it will seem like the 14th never happened.

24

Whether it’s a shopping trip to Malaga, a girls weekend snowboarding or skiing in Sierra Nevada – or a trip to Tarifa (where the hottest surfers in Europe hide out only 45 minutes from Marbella!) get your girlies together and hit the road like “You don’t need no man!” Well, girls now that you’re sorted, let’s give the guys some helpful hints!

Valentine’s Special

Love Stories By Virginie Jones

I’m trying to start a book club and the girls in the SOCIETY office aren’t very enthusiastic about my latest idea, insisting that between deadlines, gym, yoga, kickboxing and all the other activities we’ve (foolishly!) embarked

upon as part of our New Year’s resolutions, there simply aren’t enough days in the week for books too! But in my world, there is ALWAYS time for books.

Almi

realities of the time prevent them from being together. Although Noah attempts to keep in contact with Allie after they are forced to separate, his letters go unanswered. Eventually, Noah professes his undying and eternal love in one final letter.

It’s happy, it’s sad, it’s sooo happy…but oh, it’s so sad! Yes, it’s just what the doctor ordered on Valentine’s Day (she’s currently between boyfriends).

Noah travels north to find gainful employment and to escape the ghost of Allie, and eventually he goes off to war. After serving his country, he returns home to restore an old farmhouse. A newspaper article about his endeavor catches Allie’s eye, and 14 years after she last saw Noah, Allie returns to him. The only problem is she is engaged to another man. After spending two wonderful reunion days together, Allie must decide between the two men that she loves.

Our resident romantic who is permanently in love (with a different person each month!) has chosen The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks.

Set in the pre-and post-World War II era, The Notebook tells the story of Noah and Allie who spend a wonderful summer together, but the socio-economic Our Little Miss Happily Married, Cony’s favourite love story is A Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Marquez, one of my all-time favourite authors. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the family. It is a rich and brilliant chronicle of life and death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. Love and lust, war and revolution, riches and poverty, youth and senility - the variety of life, the endlessness of death, the search for peace and truth - these universal themes dominate the novel. Whether he is describing an affair of passion or the voracity of capitalism and the corruption of government, Gabriel Garcia Marquez always writes with the simplicity, ease, and purity that are the mark of a master.

26

Whilst a SOCIETY book club still seems a far-flung world away, I have been able to pin some of the girls down on their favourite romance novels, ‘cause there really is no better way for desperate singletons to celebrate Valentine’s Day than home alone with a tearjerker and a box of chocolates!

Charlotte

Like her namesake, Charlotte, in Sex and the City, our Charlotte is the quiet, sensible one - and she’s also a helpless romantic! Her favourite love story is The Timetraveller’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. The novel is a love story between librarian, Henry DeTamble, and his wife, Clare Anne Abshire, an artist who makes paper sculptures. Henry has a rare genetic disorder that causes him to involuntarily travel through time. When 20-year-old Clare meets 28-year-old Henry at the Newberry Library in 1991 at the opening of the novel, he has never seen her before, although she has known him most of her life. Niffenegger uses time travel as a way of expressing the sense of slippage that you get in any relationship - that you could be living through a slightly different love story from the one your partner is experiencing. And she certainly weaves her plot well. This is one of those books that makes you want to eat it up from start to finish. When I first read this book in 2005, I finished it in three days flat, barely breaking to eat and sleep – and cried my eyes out the whole way through!

The Entertainment Charts

Valentine’s Special Patricia

the office chatterbox, who keeps us up to date on all the latest gossip and scandal is (also!) single…she’s also a date-aholic! (I doubt she’s even read a book since the invention of Tinder!) Her favourite ‘romance’ novel is the oh so saucy, Fifty Shades of Grey, by EL James. Fifty Shades of Grey is the story of a college student, Anastasia, who begins a relationship with a 27-year-old very successful and powerful businessman, Christian Grey, after interviewing him for her college newspaper. Ana loses her virginity to Christian, and he asks her to sign a non-disclosure agreement and a contract that keeps their relationship purely sexual and defines their relationship as one of “dominance and submission.” Fifty Shades of Grey fits into the genre of erotica, but has gained mainstream popularity, having topped bestseller lists around the world, selling over 125 million copies worldwide by June 2015. It has been translated into 52 languages, and set a record in the United Kingdom as the fastest-selling paperback of all time.

Our fiery but fickle (when it comes to love!) India is in fact remarkably like the heroine of her favourite love story, which may explain a think or two about her ‘eventful’ love life. Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell received the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 and last year it was voted American’s 2nd favourite book, behind the Bible. Mitchell’s famous work chronicles the love-hate relationship between Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler. Proving that timing is everything, Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler never seem to be quite in synch. Throughout the epic story, this tempestuous twosome experience passion but not permanence, and their stormy marriage reflects the surrounding Civil War battles. The flirtatious, promiscuous, and perpetually pursued Scarlett can’t make up her mind between her many suitors. When she finally decides to settle on being happy with Rhett, her fickle nature has already driven him away. Hope springs eternal in our devious heroine, however, and the novel ends with Scarlett proclaiming, “Tomorrow is another day.”

28

Our resident love adviser and counselor, Eleanor, has chosen the epic Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky, which she insists is possibly the greatest love story of all time. Crime and Punishment also features an immensely engaging blend of intrigue; philosophy; political, social, moral and religious commentary that all thread together to create a masterpiece of literature that captures the deep, raw core of the human condition when it is at it’s most gruesome and vulnerable. Although Crime and Punishment is not a romance novel the relationship between Sonia and Raskolinikov is spellbinding and the Epilogue when they reunite is simply transcendent and mind blowing!

hilst Marbella affords us yearround sunshine, a fabulous array of exquisite restaurants to dine in each night and an extravagantly flamboyant social life – the other great thing about our hometown is its proximity to so many fabulous weekend destinations, and the fact that in just under an hour you can be a world away!

By Natalie Rose Kern

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Marbella – but I LOVE to escape just as much! Tarifa is always my destination of choice and during the summer months when Marbella is packed with tourists, and the beaches, bars and restuarants are filled with holiday makers, I run off most weekends, to kick off my shoes, relax, ramble and recharge. Despite its recent surge in popularity, Tarifa has managed to remain unspoiled and has retained all of its charm and picturesque beauty. It’s wonderfully rugged, effortlessly charming, beautifully bohemian, wild and wonderfully carefree. From its long,

wide, golden sandy beaches and hippified beachbars and lounges to the cobbled streets of the old town, with its wrought iron balconies, imposing church and quaint and colourful boutiques, time slows down in Tarifa and life unfolds serenely. Whilst it’s wonderful to awaken on the beach and to run down to the sea for a morning dip during the summer months, the winters in Tarifa tend to be a bit blustery (to say the least!), so for times like this, I always plump for a boutique hotel or bijou apartment in the Old Town rather than a spot along Tarifa’s beach stretch - and on this particular weekend, the forecast did not look good. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon when we left Marbella, with sunshine and bright blue skies, but as we travelled east, the clouds thickened and the sky grew dark. I feared the weekend could be a disaster. We found (free!) parking immediately on the main Street, Avenida de la Constitución, passed through the grand arch of the old town walls and meandered down the cobbled streets until we stumbled upon The Riad. It was remarkably easy to find and located on one of the prettiest streets in town that affords stunning views of the church’s dome peering out above the rooftops.

32

...that’s what is so attractive about The Riad – its warmth and its relaxed, homely feel.

The canopy covering the terrace afforded just enough shelter to feel secluded and snug. And that’s what is so attractive about The Riad – its warmth and its relaxed, homely feel.

We were met by Natasha, with warm welcomes and friendly greetings, and my curious, eager eyes scanned my surroundings and took in the scene.

It’s beautiful. Tasteful, polished, stylish and full of character. I love it.

It’s unpretentious and welcoming – all you need for a romantic weekend away, so that even if it rains, you feel cosy and at home. Ok, so

Natasha showed us around the hotel and explained that it aims to offer its guests a combination of historical, cultural and artistic delights as well as a sanctuary for wellness and rest. I am sold. Its design, décor and ambiance offer all the delights and, as I take a tour of the hammam and peek in at the inviting massage bed in the treatment room, I know I have already found my sanctuary!

the rain may have hampered my weekend plans of window-shopping about the town in the sunshine and basking on the beach, but if I’m going to be holed up with a good movie in a gorgeous setting, I can’t think of anywhere better than here.

The reasonably new hotel, which only opened its doors last summer, has been stunningly renovated with obvious love and an impeccable eye for detail. Set within the confines of a beautiful 17th century townhouse, The Riad has preserved all of the building’s original features, maintaining its character and grandeur, whilst at the same time offering exquisite furnishings, top-of-the-range mod-cons and stylish, contemporary touches.

A selection of cheeses, charcuterie, breads and baked delicacies made up the breakfast selection, along with yoghurts and a fabulous home-baked carrot cake. I had coffee. Then another. Suddenly the gloomy skies weren’t looking so sinister anymore… No! They really weren’t. It wasn’t just the coffee, the sun was actually trying to break her way through the clouds. I might be able to bask on the beach after all!

The ten bedrooms are all exquisitely decorated, each with its own unique charm and style, but all with a distinctly exotic air of a Moroccan riad. From

its pretty pastel-painted wooden doors and shutters, to its gorgeous Moroccan tiled floors, the charismatic boutique hotel is a delightful retreat of enchantment.

The bedroom is a stylish haven; elegant tiled floors, cow-skin rug, bare-bricked walls, giant four-poster bed, French windows that open onto a Romeo and Julietesque balcony, and soft lighting that emerges from cubbyholes in the brick walls - it’s romantic and rustic. The washbasin and shower are both in the bedroom and it’s laid out like a cool, cosy studio. Arty magazines, ecotoiletries and bottles of wine and water are the only visible commodities for the room’s charm is in its elegant furnishings and cosy feel. There’s a worn, leather armchair and a dressing area that is simple and unadorned – and you can hear the church bells…and it’s starting to rain…and the raindrops fall musically upon the cobbled streets outside the windows…and it’s glorious. With only ten bedrooms in an airy, stonefloored building, one would expect to hear a great deal of noise, of comings and goings and chit-chatter from other rooms – but no! Not a peep all night long.

Secretly, I am gutted that I picked this January weekend to stay as I would LOOOOOVE rose petals in my bed, but to be honest, it’s so lovely here… I might just have to come back!

Sitting high above the rooftops, taking in the church’s imposing dome, the little higgledy-piggledy roof terraces and the lines of electricity running across the stormy skies - it’s a mesmerising start to the day.

SIERRA NEVADA From

Princess to

Pauper

W

hilst the beginning of the year is a quiet and relatively party-free time for most people as they recover from Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, (and the substantial dents in their wallets) it seems that all my nearest and dearest have birthdays this month…so for me, the party continues!

The first celebration of the year is my little monkey’s birthday, which we somehow manage to turn into an annual weeklong extravaganza, and this year was certainly an affair to remember! The child’s birthday wish was to go skiing and, magazine deadlines being what they are, I knew we couldn’t take a trip abroad, but with Sierra Nevada on our doorstep, a weekend in the mountains seemed a great idea– only one problem, there was no snow! At only two hours from Marbella, Sierra Nevada is a fantastic option for those after a ski weekend without any of the hassle or hullabaloo of tickets, flights, customs, trains, planes and automobiles…Well, maybe just the automobile! Home to Europe’s

34

southernmost ski resort, Sierra Nevada offers a total of 107 skiable kilometres, with a total of 115 runs. 40 are blue runs, 9 black, 50 red and 16 green. In addition, there

are cross-country ski trails, and the relatively small resort is even home to Europe’s largest freestyle snowboard park…but most importantly, Sierra Nevada has 353 snow cannons that cover 35 km of pistes. The slopes are open from December -- or November if the snow has arrived early -until the end of April, or sometimes even the beginning of May. It’s a compact resort, but its small size means that everything is very easily navigated and all restaurants, hotels and après-ski spots are within walking distance (or a short drive) to the ski lifts, making it an ideal choice for a weekend break. We scanned the forecasts eagerly for the weeks leading up to the birthday weekend and it didn’t look too promising, but The Big Man figured we should chance it anyway and booked the exclusive El Lodge hotel so that even if there wasn’t any snow we could enjoy a weekend of pampering. It seemed like a great idea to me and I zealously scanned El Lodge’s facilities and

the list of spa treatments online, planning my weekend of indulgence. We packed the car up on Friday afternoon after work and set off. As co-pilot, I probably should have stayed awake to navigate the journey, but what can I say, I was exhausted. During my slumber the Big Man had managed to drive us an hour past Málaga and we were only at Granada when I awoke three hours later. By the time we reached El Lodge, The Big Man was tired, I was starving and The Monkey was restless. We unloaded, checked in and the bellboy showed us to our room. We’d booked a suite with separate living and dressing room and it was fabulous – wooden panelling throughout, soft, plush upholsteries, framed retro ski posters, fur blankets, and the bed was so inviting that I wanted to sink right into it, but I feared that if I did, I wouldn’t resurface until morning. We prepared for dinner and went down to the bar, where a delightful staff member asked the little one if he wanted to see the kids’ room and his eyes lit up as he nodded excitedly.

El Lodge is magnificent. Every detail oozes old school James Bond glamour, from its roaring

fire and animal hide rugs to its dark polished floorboards and opulent library. While The Big Man ordered drinks and studied the menu, I wandered off to find the kids’ room to check on the child. The room was a children’s paradise; toys, games, musical instruments and teddies were all there, as was a contemporary wooden Wendy house. Computers were set up along wooden benches and giant leather sofas faced a wall, lined with flatscreen TVs with Xboxes, PlayStations and Wiis. The children were all in heaven.

Dinner was extraordinary and, after an exciting array of starters, we tucked into a rich and warming fondue, followed by cheesecake (it was The Monkey’s birthday, after all!) and we turned in early as we planned to hit the slopes at the crack of dawn the following morning.

Breakfast was served in The Grill restaurant, which was flooded with early morning sunshine that bounced in off the snowy slopes – the snow cannons were blasting fast and furious! We munched on pastries and waffles by the fire as I gazed out onto the large, decked terrace outside that was being set up with warm blankets and furs on each armchair. I planned to make this my office for the afternoon and get some writing done after skiing. Soon, it was time for the child’s ski lesson so his father took him down to get his boots fitted as I ascended to dress for the pistes. Moments later (as I was hopping about gleefully in my snow bunny outfit,) the bedroom door swung open and both the little one and big one burst in; one in fits of tears, the other in a ranting rage. A ‘dispute’ had broken out (over a ski suit!) and tantrums were in full swing (from both of them!) I sighed, exasperated, but before I had a chance to play mediator, the Big Man was packing his bag and commanding us to do the same. He checked out, packed the car and we were back on the road to Marbella – without having so much as touched the snow! We left the ski resort and began to descend the long and winding road; me, looking out of the window trying hard not to cry, The Monkey sobbing in the back seat…This was not the glorious weekend I had envisaged! “Take us back!” I requested suddenly, “Please, please, take us back!” The Monkey wiped his cheeks and begged, “Please, Papa, please!” Within half an hour The Monkey and I were sipping hot chocolate by the snow as I formulated a plan. Luckily, we have the very best friends in the world and, as The

Big Man made his way home to Marbella, my girlfriend and her little boy were on the road up to join us. The child and I trudged through the slushy streets, bags on back, the little man clinging to my hand as we went from hotel to hotel in search of a room. It was a definitely

a case of from Princess to pauper in one afternoon.

Eventually we found an apartment right in the centre of the square – it was simple and inexpensive…perfect! Ok, so it wasn’t the lap of luxury of El Lodge, but we were on a shoestring budget now and all we wanted was to finally hit the slopes. Monkey and I settled into our quirky little crash pad and set out to organise ski lessons, equipment hire and ski passes. ADULT SKI PASS ½ day – 39.00€ Full day – 46.00€ Two-day – 91.00€

FORFAIT

KIDS SKI PASS ½ day – 26.50€ Full day – 33.00€ Two-day – 59.00€

The other two finally rocked up and our motley crew set out for food, hot drinks, Monopoly and chess by the fire at our favourite post-piste spot - Crescendo Lodge. The next day we were up and

out at sunrise, packing, dressing, coffee and croissants on the go, chattering little monkeys in tow as they compared gloves, hats and helmets (no tantrum over the ski suit today!) The friendly crew at Intersport Rio sport Ski Rental were efficient and patient and soon all equipment had been fitted and rented and we were (FINALLY!) on our way up the mountain. There are

15 registered ski schools in Sierra Nevada with over 400 teachers. Many offer a combination of ski hire and a couple hours of private classes special offers and all schools have English-speaking ski instructors upon request. I had chosen the Spanish Ski School and the boys had a friendly bilingual instructor who took them both under his wing with remarkable ease and efficiency. We planted kisses on each of the boys’ noses and foreheads and wished the instructor good luck before setting off down the slopes as fast as the wind would carry us. When our time was up, we collected the boys, who were both grinning from ear and recounting their skiing exploits. After an afternoon of snowploughing with the children, the boys were both exhausted (and so were we!) and I hit the final run of the day. Sun on my face, little arms wrapped around my waist, we descended gently, zigzagging our way down the mountain. So…it hadn’t quite gone to plan and I didn’t get to enjoy my spa weekend indulgence at El Lodge, nor my cosy office that looked onto the slopes but as I gazed upon the sleeping children in the backseat on the journey home, and contemplated the fun and excitement of the weekend, it didn’t even matter.

CANCER IMMUNOTHERAPY THERAPY

C

ancer treatment is continuously evolving, achieving significant advances in cure rates and increasing patient survival. Tumours are formed from normal tissue cells and produced through changes in their DNA called “mutations”. When there is a mutation, the cell changes completely and starts to divide uncontrollably, developing into cancer. Until a relatively short time ago these tumours were classified according to the tissue of origin: lung cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer... and from there the patient was sent to the lung specialist, breast specialist, liver specialist... but the site of origin does not define the tumour, or at least it only defines it in part. For the first time we have the capacity to sequence (analyse) the DNA (genome) of each tumour. This allows us to understand what is happening based on an existing mutation. And we can design “a la carte” drugs, known as specific targeted agent, which target one or more specific mutations.

Chemotherapy is the third therapeutic weapon against cancer and is known, together with hormone therapy, as systemic treatment as it is given to the patient either parenterally or orally. Chemotherapy has also developed significantly. These systemic treatments are increasingly used earlier, in conjunction with surgery and with radiotherapy before and afterwards, as a means of preventing possible recurrence later on. Chemotherapy has also achieved control, sometimes definitively, as a single therapeutic weapon in tumour processes even at an advanced stage, as well as in

Radiotherapy has also developed significantly, often being as effective as surgery thanks to new sophisticated radiotherapy machines which achieve selective destruction of the tumour with little effect on the surrounding tissue.

42

WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? The immune system is one of the most efficient systems in the body and usually exists as a physiological defence against any type of attack on it. This system has evolved over thousands and thousands of years and is devoted to defending against the actions of external agents allowing human beings to survive in a hostile environment. It is made up of a large variety of cells with specific functions which act in a coordinated manner to recognise and eliminate abnormal cells from the body. These abnormal cells have on their surface, or release when destroyed, molecules called antigens which stimulate the immune system to produce a response using antibodies.

Many of the usual cancer treatments: surgery, radiotherapy and also chemotherapy can be curative as they are constantly evolving and achieving better therapeutic results. Mortality due to cancer is reducing at a rate of 2% a year and constantly increasing quality of life for the patient. As a result, cancer surgery is becoming continually less aggressive and less mutilating. Successful preservation of the organ in which the tumour develops is possible on many occasions now that other supplementary treatment is given (radiotherapy and chemotherapy) with surgery being performed afterwards using more efficient and safer techniques.

But one of the most important therapeutic advances, currently and for the future, is the immunological treatment of cancer, known as immunotherapy. This incorporates highly effective agents achieving control of some advanced tumours which were previously uncontrollable, even being curative in some cases. These treatments are different to previously, due to a different mechanism of action.

leukaemia, lymphoma, some childhood tumours, testicular cancers etc. All this has been due to the development of more and more new agents specifically targeted at different mutations identified in the tumour. This last group of agents consists of those known as “Targeted Therapy” (drugs which interfere with specific mutations which cause cancer) they currently play an important role and represent a significant step forward, leaving behind the classic concept that the same treatment works for all tumours.

One significant component in this response is the activation and production of T lymphocytes which function to neutralise or eliminate these abnormal cells. These T lymphocyte are activated by the presentation of the previously described antigens by special cells from the immune system called Dendritic Cells, their main role being to present activation antigens. Activated T lymphocytes are those which act on the tumour cells and cause their destruction. The problem which occurs with malignant tumours is that at a determined time, still not fully understood, the destructive action of these lymphocytes is neutralised or reduced due to the action of factors produced by the tumour. Sometimes this neutralisation is not complete and the patient’s immune system works weakly, the

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

tumour then grows more slowly although finally succeeds in spreading and killing the patient. These concepts, which have been understood for a long time, have resulted in the development of drugs targeted in unblocking the system that paralyses the destructive action of the lymphocytes. It is the basis of current immunotherapy, which we will try to explain in the simplest way possible. To be able to perform this “unblocking” action a series of agents, monoclonal antibodies, have been developed, which work in patients to recover their defensive capabilities. A new therapeutic era has been founded through the use of what are known as Immunotherapy Agents. The first to benefit from this new era are patients who suffer from more aggressive tumours with little possibility of obtaining any response with conventional treatment. This is the case with malignant melanoma, a skin tumour that takes thousands of lives a year throughout the world and which has been the first to rely on this immunotherapy, demonstrating a high level of success with a significant increase in survival. HOW AND WHERE DO THESE DRUGS ACT AND WHAT ARE THEY CALLED? The drugs are Monoclonal Antibodies (mAb) which act at the level of lymphocyte receptors and tumour cells, freeing the inhibition that the tumour causes and allowing them to act as destructive elements at the level of the interference points. Due to action on these points they are known as Checkpoint Inhibitors.

Given these responses in melanoma, research into other tumours such as advanced lung cancer with poor prognosis, pancreatic cancer, liver and colorectal tumours and tumours of the head and neck has been carried out. Simultaneously other laboratories have developed similar agents such as Pembrolizumab (AntiPD1) from MSD for melanoma and renal carcinoma and Atezolizumab (Anti PDL1) from Roche for lung cancer and also urothelial tumours. The magazine «Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology» recently published a review of more than 200 scientific articles carried out by the National Oncological Investigation Centre (Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas - CNIO) which revealed the future potential for immunotherapy to improve survival in pancreatic cancer. As a result the team led by José Antonio López Martin, Head of the Oncology Early Phase Clinical Trials Unit (Unidad de Ensayos Clínicos en Fase Temprana en Oncología - UFTO) in the 12 de Octubre University Hospital, indicated that “we find ourselves on a ‘changed course’ thanks to the appearance of new treatments designed to activate the immune system so it recognises and directly attacks the tumour. At the same time researchers and clinicians for their part have observed that the trials performed until now have unusual characteristics, in some cases they have moved directly from phase I to phase III or due to good results obtained in the drug group they have had to stop the trial for ethical reasons, as they could not leave

the patients in the placebo or drug control group when the results were significantly inferior. Due to this, we believe that it will be necessary to establish individual criteria for this type of molecule, given the results which we are seeing.” It is also a challenge for the pharmaceutical laboratories. IMMUNOTHERAPY EXPERIENCE IN HC HOSPITAL. In the Oncology Unit in our HC Hospital we have already been giving Immunotherapy treatment for a couple of years, generally with excellent results. We started to use Ipilimumab (Anti CTLA4) in advanced melanoma and currently we are using Nivolumab and Pembrolizumab (Anti PD1) also in melanoma and in advanced lung cancer. This has been possible thanks to the Expanded Access Programme from Bristol Myers Squib and Merck Sharp & Done (MSD) Laboratories. The results obtained up until now are equivalent to those reported in the literature with very high response rates and excellent treatment tolerance. Some of these drugs are already available with limited indications having been approved by the European and Spanish Agencies and we are hoping that both insurers and the National Health System will cover their high cost. Dr Hernán Cortés-Funes Head of the Oncology Unit at HC Marbella and Chief Medical Equipment

The first of this type of drug was developed by BMS (Bristol Meyers Squib) and was called Ipilimumab which blocks the inhibiting action of a T lymphocyte receptor, called CTLA 4. This receptor hampers the T cell’s action, blocking it allows the T cell to recover its destructive action (Anti CTLA 4). Ipilimumab was tried out as a single agent in advanced melanoma more than 4 years ago achieving a high response rate which prompted the rolling out of a broad development and clinical research programme. The second drug investigated by the same company BMS was Nivolumab which acted on another T lymphocyte receptor called PD1 that under normal conditions would act on the tumour cell through some of some ligands Known PDL1 Y PDL2, but they were neutralised by the tumour preventing them from having their destructive effect (anti PD1). Both agents (Ipilimumab and Nivolumab) have been used as single agent treatments and in combination. They have achieved a response rate greater than 60% with complete remission in 22% of patients with very advanced metastatic melanoma.

Crystals, Chakras & Healing Hands

Natalie Rose Kern visits the Crystal Healing Energy Centre in attempt to get ‘healed’ – could this be her last hope?

I

was booked in for ‘a healing’, but truth be told, when I arrived at the Crystal Healing Energy Centre, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The recently opened holistic centre, which is located in the Centro Comercial Costasol, in Bel-Air claims to offer the most powerful and effective methods of energy healing available today, so I was intrigued. Whilst I have an open mind regarding all holistic and spiritual practices, as well as favouring alternative therapies and natural remedies to pharmaceutical options, I’ve never actually had a crystal healing, so I was excited and a little apprehensive. Allynne, who is the embodiment of tranquility and calm, greeted me and she immediately put me at ease as she showed me around the centre and described the various machines, treatments and practices to me.

46

The main therapy room is a sanctuary of repose and rest. A large massage bed sits in the centre with illuminated crystals hanging overhead and a wonderfully relaxing ambiance. I was told that this was where I will be healed – I couldn’t wait! The rare Crystal Healing Bed therapy consists of seven hand-picked and handcut fully charged Crystals, which transmit coloured light energy that corresponds with the colours of the seven major chakras. The powerful and pure molecular structure of each crystal is believed to generate and funnel a high level of energy that heals and balances our physical, energetic and spirit bodies. The crystals’ healing properties not only offer deep relaxation but also heal a great deal of physical ailments from asthma to insomnia. I lie on the bed and Allynne begins a session of reflexology, which can only

be described as heavenly! She starts silently at first, working her hands over the arches of my feet, through my toes and ankles as I recline in a state of bliss and feel all tension and stress melt away from my shoulders and flow out through the soles of my feet. After a few moments in silence, Allynne asks if I would like her to name and describe each of the pressure points as she works on them; I agree and it’s utterly fascinating. From my head, neck and shoulders to my digestive system and vital organs she heals each and every part of my body via pressure and massage of precise reflexology points on my feet. Simply by touching and applying pressure to these specific points on each of my feet, Allynne is able to correctly diagnose all of my ailments and problem areas. Surprise, surprise my adrenals are the most painful spot on my foot…the organ that is associated with stress! Here, Allynne finds crystals under the skin which crackle and crunch as she massages and rubs them and I feel myself

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

becoming lightheaded with ecstasy… yes, it really is THAT GOOD! When the reflexology session is finished and I can finally bring myself to a seated position (I could have happily stayed there ALL DAY LONG!) I feel recharged, reenergized and absolutely buzzing. Not only was the foot massage divinely enjoyable, but the release of stress from the rest of my body is undeniable. Allynne then clears my aura, and it is the most odd and inexplicable sensation as I stand in the centre of the room, eyes closed, swaying and wavering like a tree in the wind. FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Top advice, tips and tricks to feel fabulous this february

Beat the Blues withYoga

F

ebruary is widely regarded as the most depressing month of the year; it’s cold, dark and dreary, Christmas cheer and New Year’s celebrations are a distant memory and the warmth of summer still feels a long way away! Plus of course there’s Valentines Day – and if your romantic life is a little lacklustre, it could also exacerbate the ‘February blues’- Thank goodness that February is also the shortest month! So I’m here to help you banish those winter blues and show you how to alleviate some of the symptoms of depression – and what better way to relax, unwind, reenergise and revitalise than yoga! Significant research has been conducted on yoga as a therapeutic tool and yoga is increasingly used as a means to treat depression and anxiety. The yoga cure for depression is simply to practice regularly even when you don’t feel like it. Start by telling yourself that you only need to do ten minutes then see how you feel at the end of the tenminute practice. A little yoga is better than none but the chances are that you will feel like doing another ten minutes practice. The more you practice the better you’ll feel each time. Also practice regularly ten or twenty minutes a day is better than one hour per week. Practicing regularly, resting the mind and becoming aware of your breath as it easies anxiety and

52

raises GABA levels in the brain this will be a huge step forward in battling depression. Here are a three poses to help calm and focus your mind, ease tension in your body and at the same time build strength flexibility and balance. Don’t worry about wobbling, they are supposed to challenge your balance and this is fun. Practice them with ease, keep your breath steady and avoid pushing or straining.

Extended mountain Stand tall feet together.

Take a hold of your ankle and bring the sole of your foot to your inner thigh. If your balance isn’t great today (and it changes from day to day) you can lower your foot, balancing your heel against your ankle with toes resting on the floor or bring the sole of your foot to your calf muscle (just not on the knee joint) Press your foot into your thigh (calf) and press your thigh (calf) against your foot, just like a magnet stuck to a fridge.

As you exhale allow your shoulders to soften away from your ears.

If you can, bring your hands together in a prayer position pressing your thumbs into your breastbone or inhale and raise your arms above your head.

Imagine your tailbone dropping down towards your heels as you lift your chest.

Hold for 3 to 5 long steady breaths.

Take a big inhale reaching arms up over your head.

Look up towards your fingertips as you keep you face and forehead relaxed. Stay here for 3 to 5 long, steady breaths.

Tree pose Stand tall with feet parallel and a few inches apart. Shift the weight into your left leg and bring your right knee into your chest, hug your shin with you hands.

Repeat on the other side.

Warrior III

Local yogi and spiritual guru, Margaret Buchanan, joins us once again this month to banish our winter blues with a little yoga therapy - and teaches us how our breathing and even our posture can affect our mood!

Hug your left shin into you chest. Then extend it straight back behind you so it’s parallel to the ground. Flex your left foot, point toes down to the ground, as though you are holding up the wall behind you. Bring your fingertips to ground to stabilise yourself. Reach your arms out in front of you so your body is in a straight line from your fingertips all the way down to your left heel. Stay here for 3 long deep breaths. Soften both knees and hug your left shin into your chest then place your feet together and come back to standing. Repeat on the other side Try moving straight from tree pose on the left to warrior 3 and then repeat both poses on the other side.

Yoga and Good posture Good posture is vital to our wellbeing. It affects how we feel and how we live. When we have good posture we have more energy, more confidence and we project a healthy happy capable persona. Good posture is when our bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and all connective tissues are working efficiently together. Our vital organs are in the right position and can function at peak efficiency. But when our posture is bad, we feel sluggish and weak; we don’t breathe or use our lungs optimally. We look less confident and unsure. As a mother, I often say to my children, (much to their irritation) “Stop slouching!” and will ask them “If you see an elderly person from across the street, how would you know that they are old?” The answer 99% of the time is because of their posture and how they hold themselves. Bad posture is not only unhealthy it’s very ageing. Good posture is something we are all capable of. Your present posture is a result of what you do all day. So, If you’ve spent the majority of your time for the last few years, hunched over a computer the chances are that your shoulders are rounded, your chest has collapsed inwards squashing your lungs, your upper back is hunched, your head protrudes forward and your arms fall in front of your torso instead of falling naturally by your side. Maybe you spend a large part of your day at the wheel of a car. Your tailbone tucked under, vertebrae in your looked back compressed on one side of the disk (feeling

Try this right now! any back pain recently?), your hip flexors and hamstrings feel tight and your pelvis and hips may be stiff and immobile. It’s taken years to ingrain these bad postural habits into your body so it will take more than a few shoulder rolls to correct things but fear not - The good news is that there are things you can do for just a few minutes each day to help your body learn (and remember) the optimal way of moving and being. Once you learn them and start to bring them into practice in your daily life, the benefits will become startlingly obvious and this will encourage you to continue on your quest for better posture and before long it will be second nature. Good posture isn’t only about your shoulders and back. Your body is a chain of interconnected parts. Begin at the soles of your feet traveling up to the ankles, up through the knees to the hips, pelvis, belly and lower back. Up through the spine to the chest and shoulders and finally up through the neck to the crown of your head.

Stand up with your feet a little apart and parallel. Toes right in front of your heelsKnees soft, not locked. Pelvis neutral - what does that mean? I like to think of the pelvis as a bowl of water. Imagine the water still, flat and level. If you tilt your pelvis forward, arching your lower back, the water would spill out of the front of the bowl running down the front of your legs. If you tilt the pelvis back, tucking the tailbone under and rounding the lower back, the water would spill out of the back

and run down the back of your legs. Do this now, tilt your pelvis backwards and forwards several times then find the middle point where the pelvis is neutral and you have a natural curve in your lower back- Now take a big inhale and lengthen up through your spine. Imagine the top of your head floating up towards the ceiling- As you exhale allow your shoulders to soften down and back away from your ears. Your arms should fall naturally by your sideShoulders right above your hips- Head above your heart.

Ideally we want this interconnected chain of body parts to be not too taunt, not too loose, somewhere in the middle with all the parts of the chain working efficiently together.

This is great posture. You will look taller and more confident. Your chest will be open and your lungs will have room to breathe to their full capacity. You will feel more energised, more optimistic and as if that is enough, you will look a couple of sizes slimmer.

Practicing yoga will drastically improve your posture. Just being mindful of your breath moving through your body in your practice and in your life will have very positive improvements to your posture, your wellbeing and general state of mind.

I suggest that you practice these few small poses and posture changes regularly and most importantly, become aware of your breathing. Depression, anxiety, stress, all of these can be relieved with a little yoga in your life!

Kiss me QUICK! Valentine ’s Day is upon us and I know what you’re all thinking... what makeup, and more importantly, what lipstick are you going to wear that will make your lips look even more kissable than they do already?! Whether you’re celebrating with your guy or girl friends, I’ve put together three different ways you can add a bit more oomph to a romantic red lip to WOW your Valentine’s day date.

54

3

Our beauty girl about town, Jess Miles, offers us some top tips for kissable lips this Valentine’s Day. From slick and shiny to red or glittery, these make-up looks will ensure that your date can’t keep his eyes off of your lips - and you’ll be guaranteed a smooch at the end of the night!

THE BEAUTY BAROMETER

Ombré lip step-by-step

Ombré looks are super sexy and really bring the focus to the lips, so keep reading to find out how to do this easy but effective look for yourself.

First step – Start off by lining the corners of the lips with a dark purple lip liner, fill in the lined area and using a blending brush or your finger, blend the colour into the middle slightly so you aren’t left with a harsh line making it look messy and unfinished. Second step – Fill in the middle of the lips with

a red lip liner and make sure it is all opaque but blended nicely, if you don’t have a lip liner that is opaque enough to fill in the whole area then you can also just line the edges and use a lipstick to fill in the gaps.

Add a little Sparkle... Ok so I know the thought of glitter can be slightly daunting but who’s to say that it was only for your 15 year old self to use?! When done right it can look very effective and glam up a natural makeup look if you haven’t got ages to spend on your your overall makeup! To achieve this look, mix a little glitter into a clear or red lip gloss and apply on top of a red lip. It will make them look so amazing that your date won’t be able to keep their eyes off of your dazzling lips!

1

2

2

Last step – I recommend adding a sheer red gloss to complete this look as it helps to blend the two colours together and gives it more of an even finish, but this part is completely down to personal preference! You could also leave it matte or even add a little bit of glitter to jazz the look up even more if you desire.

3

FLIRTY RED

A bold red lip will NEVER go out of fashion, it is as timeless as a set of pearls. Valentine’s Day is all about love and this glossy red lip will make sure that love is the only thing your date has on their mind! To achieve this look, line your lips with a red lip liner, even the colour out with a bright red lipstick and then smother with a non-sticky gloss (stickyness isn’t great for smooching!)

TIP: When using red lip colours it is VERY important to use a lip liner to avoid the colour bleeding out into your skin and looking messy

KNOW

YOUR TYPE Sometimes, you’ve got to work with what you’ve got. The same holds true for hair. Whether nature handed you baby-fine strands or a coarse lion’s mane I am going to take you through the best products to style your tresses, so you can bid farewell to bad hair days for good.

Photo by Gold Fever Hair Extensions Stocked at Reflections

SMOOTH AS A BABY’S BOTTOM This hair type is very easy to manage. Basically all you need to do is finger dry your tresses. Smooth hair types are also blessed with a natural shine. Yep, we do hate you! Product wise I would recommend Kérastase Nutritive Bain Satin 1 €19,80 which is a complete light nutrition shampoo providing optimal nourishment from root to tip. I also love the Redken Frizz Dismiss Conditioner €15,00, because it provides smoothness, manageability and shine while protecting the hair.

56

PAR FOR THE COARSE Coarse hair is very dry, unruly and basically annoying to deal with. Clients with this hair type tend to be addicted to hair straighteners. I will let you into a secret; your life will change overnight if you book in for a weekly blow dry with your local salon. Thank me for it later. However, for those of you whose paws can’t be pried away from the straighteners, make sure you invest in a damn good set such as the GHD Eclipse €199, which style faster with less heat. Make sure you ALWAYS use a heat protective spray beforehand such as Redken Pillow Proof Express Primer €16,88, which protects hair up to 450° F. As my regular readers know, the Kerastase range is where my heart is and their Elixir shampoo €23,50 is like magic in a bottle for my coarse friends out there. Only wash your hair every few days because, as I mentioned before, coarse hair tends to be very dry.

Daniel Boardman, Senior Hair Technician at Reflections Hair, Nails and Skincare Salon in Marbella, trained under the multi award winning Errol Douglas MBE. Daniel cut his teeth working on shoots for the likes of Cosmo and Elle, while his Fashion Week experience gave him the skills to tackle any hair type or problem.

THICK AS TWO SHORT PLANKS Thick hair often causes styling and maintenance difficulties, but with the right choice of haircut and products your thick locks can be taken under control. On the up side, even though your blowout is a workout, the style can last for days before your scalp’s oils drag it down. If you suffer from an excess of tresses a shampoo with nourishing oils keeps hair from fuzzing up such as the Redken Diamond Oil Shampoo €14,74. Opt for a conditioner marked ‘hydrating’ or ‘smoothing’ and apply it from roots to tips. With all that extra hair you have to make cut and styling choices carefully. Find a stylist who knows how to thin hair and thin it well. I use a technique where I slice the hair and create a discreet version of the undercut. I promise this will be nothing like the punk-tastic hair trend of 2014 or the much loved look of 90s boy bands - only you and your stylist will know it is there. Thick hair, of course, takes much longer to dry than thinner strands. That makes a high powered blow dryer an essential part of your hair care routine. The Parlux 385, €139 is about to become your new best friend.

WEAK AS I AM

IT’S ALL GOING TO BE FINE Okay, I am just going to tell it how it is. If you are a fine hair type, you basically have about half of a normal person’s head of hair. Think Hollywood heavyweights Dakota Fanning or Gwyneth Paltrow. The flat blahness of fine hair needs volume and it needs to be looked after more than other hair types as it is weaker and more prone to breakage. The Volumifique range by Kérastase was designed specifically for fine hair to absorb without adding weight. My ‘must have’ is the Volumifique Mousse D’impulsion €24,00, which allows you to get some oomph into your blow dry. I would also suggest using a round brush, lifting upward at the roots for added body.

Weak hair can be defined as limp, droopy, thin or falling out. Split ends, extreme dryness or excessive oiliness can all be signs of weak hair. Over-processed (yes, my little bleach queens and Lindsay Lohan, I am talking to you!) and excessive heat from styling tools can cause weak hair and breakage. To nurse fried strands back to optimum health you need to introduce Olaplex into your life (here he goes again, I hear you say.) I know I bang on about this every month, but honestly this product has changed the hair industry for good. Especially beneficial for chemically coloured hair, it has the potential to restore the health of all damaged hair types, given that hair bonds are broken during thermal, mechanical and chemical service. DEMAND the Olaplex 30 minute treatment, €49 as an ‘add-on’ service the next time you visit the salon for a cut, colour or even a blow-dry. The final part of the treatment is a bottle of Olaplex No 3 €42,00 which can be used as a weekly pre-shampoo treatment to maintain the re-bonding process and keep your hair in good condition until your next salon treatment.

A Match MADE IN Hair & Beauty

Heaven… Natalie Rose Kern meets up with Natalie Richardson and Adee Phelan to discuss the most exciting arrival to the hair and beauty world of Marbella - BARDOU!

I

nternational award winning celebrity stylist, Adee Phelan and celebrity beautician and reality television star, Natalie Richardson have joined forces to bring London to Marbella – and revolutionise the salon experience, as we know it. I’ve come to meet the fashionable pair at La Sala to discuss their forthcoming project, progress and dreams for the future. Adee began hairdressing as an apprentice at the age of 25, but it wasn’t long before he graduated to Senior Stylist and developed his own cutting styles and techniques that attracted the attention of top celebrities. His stylist career had officially kicked off and in 2000 he won the British Men’s Hairdresser of the year award. In 2002 he set up his first hair salon and later on that year he won the Image of the Year award for David Beckham’s ‘mohawk’ shoot for GQ Magazine prior to the World Cup. Over the past decade Adee’s formidable career has soared and has seen him starring in the much-loved reality TV series, ‘The Salon,’ where he captured the hearts of the nation with his humour, charm and no-nonsense approach to running a salon. He has also built up an impressive list of celebrity clients; styling everyone from footballers to popstars and actors.

His passion for hairdressing and his notable business savvy has seen Adee building his own hairdressing empire called BARDOU, which

includes salons, styling ranges and hair products. His stunning BARDOU blow-dry bars are popping up all over the UK, each with its very own style and character, but all with Adee’s trademark efficiency, highly-skilled stylists, immaculate presentation and faultless customer service. series, ‘Life on Marbs.’ On the show she’s known for her love of shopping, pampering and plastic surgery, but I’ve met her on a few occasions and she’s actually very down-to-earth and sweet. “I was aware of a massive gap in the market,” Natalie tells me. “For a place like Marbella, where everyone wants to look polished, glam and gorgeous all the time, there really aren’t any salons that cater for the busy, fashionable on-the-go woman. Adee has been

doing my hair in the UK for years, and every time I’m back in England, I’m aware of the increasing disparity between the salon services in the UK and here,” she explains,

flicking her perfectly groomed hair with her immaculately manicured hand. “I approached Adee with the intention of bringing some of that VIP treatment, stylish surroundings and a second-tonone service that his salons offer to Marbella. I basically wanted somewhere here that my friends and I could go to and receive a five-star treatment in sumptuous surroundings.” Adee nods in agreement, adding, “It’s true that when Natalie and I first discussed the idea and I came out to observe the salon scene, I was pretty surprised that it’s not more energized or bustling. Marbella is such a

glamorous location, and the residents are so chic and trendy – we want to bring a slice of New York or London to this buzzing city.” Natalie smiles, “Life in Marbella means that there are always parties, events and glitzy occasions to attend, but guess how many blow-dry bars there are? None! In New York or London they’re popping up on every street corner – we need that here and that’s what BARDOU is going to offer – so that anyone can drop in for a blow-dry on the go!”

Adee takes out his phone and talks me through the design, décor and style of BARDOU. His images are fabulous: from soft, plush upholsteries and antique furniture to embossed business cards and bags, no stone has been left unturned in the creation of this gorgeous salon. From meetings with stockists to finding the right stationary and design features, to trawling auctions where he discovered his opulent Chesterfield banquettes and armchairs, Adee has sourced the very finest furnishings and finishing touches to ensure that BARDOU is the epitome of style, class and decadence. The builders are in and the furnishings, which have all been imported from the UK, (even down to the white hand towels and gowns!) are all being shipped and the floors are going down. Adee is particularly excited about the floors, which are the original wooden floorboards from The Shakespeare Theatre that had been ripped out when that building underwent refurbishment. The style is eclectic; old England with a modern twist. “We wanted it to look warm and inviting,” Natalie tells me.

“Gone are the days of bright, white marble shiny floors that give salons a clinical feel,”

Adee explains. “We want to create a salon that feels comfortable and lavish and that whether you’re a hip young cat or an elderly lady, you’ll feel pampered and will look around and think, “this is really cool!’” Adee is bringing over a team of talented stylists and beauticians that he has personally trained, and the pair have already begun interviewing the hottest talents in hair and beauty on the coast to make up their elite team. Adee’s training programme involves seminars, TV work, photo shoots and the highest standard of teaching, so that his staff are efficient and proficient, and their customer service is of the highest standard.

Natalie underwent her beauty training, which included permanent makeup with Tracie Giles in London and will be bringing some innovative and groundbreaking treatments to Marbella. BARDOU will be the ONLY SALON in Spain to have the Crystal Clear Comcit, a machine that offers microdermabrasion and oxygen therapy combined with derma rollering. Using cutting-edge technology, the Crystal Clear Comcit is the newest and most sought-after treatment on the beauty scene. In addition to this novel therapy, BARDOU will

offer all conventional beauty treatments, from manicures and pedicures to waxing, facials, eyebrow threading and eyelash extensions.

“We’re also going to be Spain’s Fake Bake flagship store,” Natalie tells me excitedly, “which is going to be fantastic as it truly is the best year-round tanning solution! Then, of course, there are BARDOU’s own hair and beauty products,” she adds, “which you are going to LOVE!” Adee flicks through a few more photos for me: fabulous packaging, gorgeous designs, a stunning gilded tray with a flute of champagne and some chocolate truffles – they truly have thought of everything! “It’s luxurious and decadent but it’s not going to be pretentious or stuffy. This is going to be a salon that everyone can enjoy, from the local Spanish, to expat British as well as Russians and all the other nationalities that reside here on the coast.” Adee explains. “We want everyone to feel welcome – and whether you’re popping in for an express blow-dry, or having a full-blown make-over, you will be pampered and indulged when you receive BARDOU’s inimitable VIP treatment.

S

ince we can remember, fashion has always been a part of our childhood - from the elegant timeless Chanel jacket that our grandmother would wear to take us out for afternoon tea, to our mother’s heels we would put on in her wardrobe while dancing to Kylie Minogue’s “Spinning Around”. Garments with a unique meaning and value have been passed on from parents to children, husbands to wives, between siblings and friends, as a sign of cherishing and love - and for years these have become the most cared for posessions we own, due to the emotional meaning they have for us.

Therefore, fashion has become the identity of the generation we were born into, grew up in, and are currently living in, reflecting the different stages of our lives, society’s changes of mentality, economic growth or depression, and even important music and film influences. However, over the past few years we have arrived at a moment where globalization has allowed us to buy clothes in the blink of an eye, an absurd cycle of micro trends has caught up with consumers and therefore a throwaway attitude has been adopted, where most garments no longer have a lasting value in our wardrobes. Sadly, environmental

exploitation has led to a cycle of global warming and catastrophic natural disasters, and the environment is one of the most important factors in the threat to our future existence, especially that of generations to come. In reality, this is exploiting not just us, the consumers, but also the planet’s resources. A willingness to embrace an environmentally friendly image in fashion has always existed, and as this is the month of love, what better way to show affection than to bring awareness to appreciate the beautiful environment we live in!

Chic Chic Happens Happens

REFASHION The earth-friendliest form of sustainable fashion uses fabric from garments that are in the post consumer chain. From wardrobe swaps to vintage shops, these garments, are mix and matched or even torn apart and resewn into fabulous new items. Because of their unique combinations these are often one of a kind pieces that distinguish the fashion conscious individual.

This is why we love fashion. It truly empowers you. But only when it allows us to carry beautiful stories woven into stunning clothes. Clothes that will sustain our wardrobe for years and generations to come.

So, the solution is very simple! Buy less and get more ‘fashion mileage’ out of each piece. Buy heritage pieces that will last. Become an active citizen through your wardrobe.

FRIENDLY FASHION While environmentalism used to manifest in fashion through a percentage of sales being donated to a charitable cause, fashion designers have recently adopted the idea of sustainability, using more environmentally-friendly materials and methods in clothing production. As more apparel companies’ sites pop up and make it easier to purchase outfits with the click of a button – and perhaps someday deliver our goods in an instant via drones, competition is becoming bigger than ever before. To thrive, global apparel brands will need to reinvent their business models, embrace

the circular economy and become more aware of propelling sustainability innovation forward, by designing sustainable fibers, launching chemicals management programs, enhancing product traceability and supply chain transparency, and promoting textile recycling. Sustainable fashion is typically more expensive than clothing produced by conventional methods, and several celebrities and designers such as Bono and Stella McCartney have recently drawn attention to socially-conscious and environmentally-friendly fashion.

Chic Happens

Here are a few environmentallyfriendly materials and methods in clothing production that we should keep an eye out for:

ORGANIC COTTON

SYNTHETIC FABRICS

REGENERATED FABRICS

If you are looking for truly sustainable cotton, look for organic, biologically produced cotton with low-impact dye. Biological production refers to how the cotton fibers are purified and prepared for spinning. It is water based and results in no pollution.

Synthetic fabrics, such as polyesters, nylons, and acrylics are made from petrochemicals, the production of which creates nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas far more potent than carbon dioxide (CO2) in contributing to climate change. However, some companies, notably Patagonia, manufacture clothing from recycled synthetics, such as PET (polyethylene terephthalate) polyester, which is made from recycled plastic bottles.

A number of fibers are made from regenerated, renewable natural sources, namely plant cellulose or plant or animal proteins. The regenerated fabrics are all biodegradable and require less pesticide than conventional cotton. Although the process for transforming plant cellulose into regenerated fabrics is usually chemically intensive, some of these regenerated cellulose fabrics, such as Tencel速/lyocell, Modal速, and bamboo, may qualify as ecofriendly.

2016 SALA GOLF TEES OFF AT RIO REAL We headed to Rio Real Golf course for a superb afternoon of golf. Both the conditions and the weather were fabulous and it was a fantastic way to start the 2016 Sala Golf Tournament. We celebrated the winners at La Sala, Puerto Banús over canapés, ribs and burgers... washed down with a few ales! We enjoyed this fun and friendly afternoon of golf - although the competitive nature of some teams was already strong! ‘We Prefer Shaven’ took the team prize and Aaron Kavanagh won the individual competition. La Sala Golf would like to thank the sponsor, Jackson Grundy, for their continued support and for making this tournament such a roaring success. Last year La Sala Golf raised over 23,000€ for local charities and they hope that they will beat that fantastic figure this year! The next competition will be held on the 13th of February at La Quinta Golf Course. To participate, please contact Lindsey - lindsey@salagroupholdings.com.

The new turbocharged Carrera exceeds all expectations

T

he fact that new 911 Carrera comes with a smaller engine and a pair of turbochargers has upset many a purist. Other than turbo-lag, their over-riding concern is the tendency for turbochargers to muffle the sound of an engine. When an engine as legendary as Porsche’s naturally-aspirated flat-six is on the firing line, that is a mighty challenge to embrace and live up to, which is why the engineers took aim at these issues from day one. The good news is that not only have they succeeded in minimising turbo-lag with the new bi-turbo 2,981cc 9A2 motor family, they have also created an inspirational flat-six soundtrack for the new Carrera that will have the purist swooning in delight. To get to grips with the new engine I spoke to powertrain development engineer, Dr. Dietmar Geisse, who explained the philosophy behind the twin-turbo 9A2 motor and how his team achieved their goals. “There was no question that we had to downsize and go to turbocharging to meet future emissions regulations,” he explained. “Our targets were clearly defined in that respect but at the same time we were not about to sacrifice throttle response, soundtrack or character in the process.”

90

“The character of a Porsche sports car engine involves high revs, so even though peak power may arrive at 6,500rpm, the new engine revs cleanly to 7,500rpm with no sign of stress.” “There are a number of things you can do to ensure good throttle response in a turbocharged engine and we used them all,” Dietmar continued. “The first of these is to have a high compression ratio so that throttle response remains crisp off boost. The second is to close the waste-gates as quickly as possible when you come off the throttle so as not to lose all the boost pressure.” “When you have two turbochargers and two waste-gates you need at least one electronic valve to work with the system because of the higher cross section of the pipes in the system, but we have two,” he explained. “This is because the vacuum compression wave in the system adds resistance, which slows down the action of a mechanical waste-gate. We started with one electronic waste-gate, but during the development process it became clear that using two made response up to 30-percent faster. While we are talking milliseconds here, you can feel the difference subjectively.”

The new design capitalises on what is termed functional integration where components that carry out certain tasks are integrated into less components to save space and weight.

TORQUE TALK

The basic construction of the new 3.0-litre 9A2 engine block is similar to the 3.4 and 3.8-litre naturally-aspirated 9A1 motor, but the bore and stroke of both the Carrera and Carrera S versions is now the same at 91.0 x 96.4mm for a swept capacity of 2,981cc. While these over-square dimensions make for an inherently high-revving motor that is not a recipe for torque in the naturally aspirated world, the twin-turbochargers more than make up for this. The cylinder-heads are new and feature a central spark plug and fuel injector for optimum spatial filling of the combustion chamber. This arrangement delivers a more even flame path with better combustion, lower wall wetting, a reduction in oil dilution and lower emissions. Fuel injection pressure is also up from 140 to 200-bar. In fact, in the cold start phase until the coolant temperature reaches 75-degrees C, the fuel-injection system runs at 250-bar pressure to improve fuel atomisation and reduce emissions. Where the naturally-aspirated 9A1 motor has one fuel pump, the 9A2 bi-turbo motor has two pumps driven off the intake camshafts by special lobes shaped like a gently curved equilateral triangle. Another significant difference of this Vario Cam Plus, twin-cam motor is variable valve timing on the exhaust as well as intake cams activated by central magnets, which further enhances power output and efficiency.

Weighing around 205kg, the 9A2 motor is at the very beginning of its development life, but the new twin-turbo motor’s debut has raised the question of the relevancy of the 911 Turbo in some quarters. However, these pundits have to bear in mind that at 3.8-litres, the 9A1 motor in the Turbo is nearly 25-percent larger and commensurately more powerful. In fact Porsche has confirmed that the 9A1 twinturbo motor will continue on in the facelifted Turbo due in 2016. The 9A2 motor’s crankcase is a lowpressure casting made of AlSi7Cu0.5Mg alloy with T6 heat treatment, and weighs 1.5kg less than its predecessor. The fourpart oil pan of the dry sump system is made of reinforced high temperature plastics. This replaces the more complex and expensive 10-piece alloy assembly used before, and saves 2.0 kg. “The new design capitalises on what is termed functional integration where components that carry out certain tasks are integrated into less components to save space and weight,” Dietmar explained. “Thus, we now have the air/oil separators and turbocharger suction pipes integrated into the oil pan. Another new unit integrates the scavenge pump for the cylinder-heads and a two-step oil pump into one, saving another 1.2kg.” As on the 9A1 Turbo engine, the turbochargers on the 9A2 motor are made

by Borg Warner. However, where some manufacturers might save cost by making one engine and then creating a detuned version via ECU software, Porsche set out to tailor two distinctly different engine specifications with the Carrera and Carrera S engines using bespoke turbochargers and control software. Since they share the same housings the turbocharger units look the same outwardly, but while both use a 45mm diameter turbine wheel, the compressor wheels of the Carrera and Carrera S are sized 49mm and 51mm respectively. The Carrera engine boosts at 0.9 bar, while the S version blows at 1.1 bar. The big numbers are 370hp at 6,500rpm for the Carrera, with 450 Nm of torque from 1,700 to 5,000rpm, while the Carrera S makes 420 hp at 6,500rpm with 500 Nm of torque from 1,700 to 5,000rpm. The rev limiter is at 7,500rpm for both. These of course are peak numbers and the exact figures depending on conditions such as altitude where the turbine wheels turn faster in thinner air. There is no overboost facility. Thanks to the choice of Carrera, Carrera S and an optional sport exhaust system, the new car comes with three possible flavours of soundtrack. The base Carrera has two rectangular exhaust outlets, while the Carrera S features four round outlet pipes. The optional Sport exhaust is distinguished by two centrally mounted round exhaust pipes.

TORQUE TALK

I have been driving 911s since 1979, and pride myself in mostly being able to tell which variant is driving past just by its engine and exhaust note. So, it came as a big surprise to me that when cruising along on a constant part throttle load in the manual Carrera S Coupe, I thought that the soundtrack reaching my ears was very similar to that of the early ‘80s 911SC, down to the fan whirr of this air-cooled classic!

3,000rpm, both waste-gates are open and only the right-hand symposer is operating,” Dietmar explained. “In this condition the engine is also off-boost, and because of the high compression ratio it is effectively running as a naturally-aspirated engine. It is obviously a coincidence that these conditions combine to create an acoustic signature akin to the distinctive beat of the 911SC.”

Now in technical terms this should not be possible since the new car is neither air-cooled nor does it have a big vertical fan sitting atop its alloy block. In fact the only thing it has in common with its three plus decade old predecessor is the fact that both have flat-six motors of 3.0-litre displacement.

The Sport exhaust equipped Carrera Cabriolet PDK I drove the next morning had its own soundtrack and it was a good one, albeit having more in common with a tuned 930 Turbo than a 911SC.

I was curious to get to the bottom of why the Carrera S sounded like a 911SC on part throttle cruise and so put the question to Dietmar, who was initially surprised at my observation. In search of the answer, he pulled out his technical manual, and showed me the cutaways of the intake and exhaust systems, and the two sound symposers built into the intake tracts. “We had one sound symposer on the naturally-aspirated motor,” he told me, “but as the new engine has two intake tracts it requires two symposers.” “Both symposers operate when you select Sport and Sport+ modes, but when the engine is running on a light load below

92

With the roof down, the gentle flutter of the waste-gates on the over-run, normally more apparent to bystanders than occupants with the Coupe, comes through loud and clear. To my surprise I absolutely loved the new Sport exhaust. Unlike the equivalent system on the outgoing naturally-aspirated car, which I always thought was brashly anti-social both in tone and volume, the new system is not overt in volume and is possessed of a lovely deep resonance. It is as though the muffling effect of the turbos has given it a perfect singing voice. Up in the hills, the solid tonal qualities of this exhaust and the flutter of the waste-gates made my day as the wall of torque thrust the red Cabriolet out of bends and made short work of the straight bits in between. So how do the three different exhaust

TORQUE TALK

It came as a big surprise to me that when cruising along on a constant part throttle load in the manual Carrera S Coupe, I thought that the soundtrack reaching my ears was very similar to that of the early ‘80s 911SC, down to the fan whirr of this air-cooled classic! systems work with the engines? More than just swapping out the rear silencer box, Porsche has gone to a great deal of trouble to design each of the three systems to be fit for purpose. While the exhaust manifolds are common, the basic exhaust system fitted to the Carrera has a single-flow catalytic convertor without a sound flap. The Carrera S has a dual-flow catalytic convertor with sound flap, as does the Sport exhaust, which is an option on either model. Naturally the silencers that match have either single or twin inlet pipes. The gearboxes used in the new Carrera are variants of the existing units uprated to handle the greater torque. In the case of the PDK, the gear sets from the Turbo are used, adapted for the sevenspeed Carrera gearbox. As the new car

peaks at 7,500rpm, 300rpm lower than before, the final drive is shortened to compensate. The revised manual gearbox also features synchronisation rings with a carbon treated surface and a new dual mass flywheel of approximately the same weight as before, but featuring a centrifugal pendulum system. While it may have offered good value for money as an entry-level 911, I was never a fan of the previous base Carrera. With 350hp at 7,400rpm and 390Nm of torque at 5,600rpm, the 3.4 litre motor revs with more verve but significantly less punch that its bigger 3.8 litre brother, whose 400hp at 7,400rpm, and 440Nm at 5,600rpm are palpably stronger at any given point in the rev band.

This is where the new turbocharged motor wins hands down. Even in Carrera form, while it is up just 20hp to 370hp at 6,500rpm, the maximum torque of 450Nm is up 60Nm, making it 10Nm greater than that of the naturally-aspirated 3.8 litre S. Just as significant as the fact that it peaks at just 1,700rpm where it plateaus till 5,000rpm. What this means as I found out during an early Sunday morning blast up a totally deserted hill road, with the gradually warming sun spilling into the relatively draft free open cabin, was that now even the base Carrera is a properly quick car. Forget the rapid 4.6 sec (Coupe 4.4 sec) 0-100km/h sprint of this Sport Chrono Package equipped PDK Cabriolet or its 293km/h top speed. The bigger impression comes from its improved driveability and eyebrow raising demonstration of speed between and through bends, where even the new base Carrera has the old Carrera S well and truly beaten. I was searching for turbo lag, but so long as you are in the right gear for your road speed, you will not find it in a quantity that matters. A slight hint of it perhaps if you are one gear too high, and a big notice if you are two or three gears too high at low road speeds in the manual or manual mode of PDK.

TORQUE TALK

To balance this out, the slightly revised suspension settings underline the crisp turn-in and terrific front-end grip of the 991 chassis. The result is a transparent chassis that confers tremendous confidence to the driver. The greater torque hit of the new twinturbo engines required a round of chassis upgrades to rebalance the equation, and chassis engineer, Eberhard Armbrust, described how this was carried out. “Fundamentally, we needed to put a bit more rubber down at the rear to handle the extra torque and increase stability,” he said. Thus, the base Carrera sees an increase in rear tyre size from 285/30ZR19 to 295/30ZR19 on its 11.5J x 19-inch wheels. The fronts remain 235/40ZR19 on 8.5J x 19-inch wheels. The S version goes from 295/30ZR20 to 305/30ZR20 at the rear on 11.5J x 20-inch wheels, with the fronts the same 245/35ZR20 on 8.5J x 20-inch as before. The new rear tyres are the same size as the GT3, except that they are the latest specification Pirellis rather than Michelin Cup tyres. What was immediately apparent on a challenging hill road was immediate and stronger thrust out of every bend at far lower revs than the old 3.8-litre Carrera S could manage. And no car gets its power down like a 911 coming out of bends, so the extra torque means an even greater slingshot effect at the exit. Even without rear-wheel steering, the new Carrera exhibits terrific pointiness. The best technique is trail braking, and you can really lean on the front end going into a bend while back end hangs on tenaciously ready to receive throttle past the apex.

94

The single change that makes the most difference to outright handling and pointto-point speed on a twisty road or track is the option of rear-wheel steering on the Carrera S, which takes the handling and grip envelope to the next level. While we did not have a race track to play on this time, Porsche managed to get a few kilometres of a local hill road closed for a couple of hours. With the confidence that nothing was coming the other way, I could really use every inch of the road through bends, and was truly amazed at what this new Carrera S could do on stock road tyres. Suffice to say, I would be reluctant to drive some mid-engined sportcars that hard on this road. We know from experience with the 918 Spyder, Turbo and GT3 models that RWS is worth up to five seconds a lap on the Nürburgring, but I was absolutely blown away when Eberhard told me the unofficial lap time clocked by the new Carrera S PDK with SCP and rear-wheel steering was 7 min 30 sec, eight whole seconds faster than the outgoing model. Back in 2004, Walter Röhrl clocked 7 min 32 sec in the Carrera GT, and since then the current GT3 has turned 7 min 25 sec, with 7 min 20 sec for its RS brother. Never before has a standard Carrera model come within five seconds of the GT3 of the same generation, so let that statistic sink in for a minute. Other than RWS, the suspension has undergone fine-tuning, one of the hardware changes being a new rear suspension upper link for the rear-wheel steer system. The PDCC dynamic chassis control now has been uprated 10-percent in the middle range.

The steering rack ratio has gone from 16.5:1 to 15:1 to gain more turn-in agility, while the kinematics of the front suspension have been altered to reduce bump steer, with toe-out reduced from 10’ to 2’. Spring rates are similar to the previous model, but the control parameters of the electronically-controlled Bilstein hydraulic dampers have been redrawn to widen the spread between the Comfort and Sport settings, to improve the cars comfort on the road, and its handling on track. PASM is now standard on all models. The comfort engine mounts now have modified rubber springs inside them, while active engine mounts are part of the Sport Chrono package. A front lift system is now available on every model. This hydraulic system moves the spring pan, raising the nose by 30mm at the touch of a button to create a 3.0-degree nose up angle. The system automatically lowers the car over 60km/h. When I got into the new Carrera for the first time I honestly did not know what to expect. I knew it would be good, but the depth and breadth of the improvements truly knocked me for six. When the Carrera GTS was launched last year, some magazines conveniently but erroneously compared it to the more expensive turbocharged AMG GT that just happened to have its launch event in California at the same time. Today, however, I would not say that a grudge match between the new Carrera S and the AMG GT was an unfair comparison. The second generation 991 Carrera is a whole new ball game.

magine you were sick and you went to your usual doctor for a prescription. Imagine this doctor prescribed ‘nature’. Would you laugh? Would you cry?! Or would you skip merrily into the woods knowing that the effect of nature upon the body and soul is a profound one? In Victorian times it was quite normal for doctors to prescribe sea air and, today, spending time in the outdoors as a mental or physical benefit is known as taking a ‘nature bath’.

HOME COUTURE

The further you are from nature the less connected you are to what it means to be human.

It is already widely understood that we are affected by our environment. It’s no coincidence that in cities there is more stress, more depression, more confusion and more crime. Not just because they are melting pots, a patchwork of different personalities, cultures and emotions, but because the further you are from nature the less connected you are to what it means to be human. Research has discovered that spending more time in nature reduces blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension and stress. When we look at this effect on humans in places such as hospitals, offices and schools we now know that even adding one pot plant makes a difference to health and wellbeing.

‘Janis’ floor lamp from Delightfull available at Foc Design

Obviously nature alone does not cure all maladies known to humankind, but it silently plays a huge part. It’s already fairly obvious to us that if we need a retreat we might head to a quiet spa surrounded by woods instead of a busy polluted city. But why? Probably because when you are tired or run down the thought of traffic jams and car horns is not hugely appealing, but there are other ways that we are affected by the environment according to recent research.

107

HOME COUTURE

Nature reduces stress, improves mood, improves cognitive performance and deep down in our bones we haven’t really forgotten that. One famous study observed patients recovering from operations and placed half in rooms with a beautiful view of nature and the other half by views of urban scenes, or facing a brick wall. No guessing which half tolerated pain more, recovered more quickly and were in higher spirits according to nurses. The effect on brain activity is no less interesting: when participants in a study viewed scenes of nature, the parts of the brain associated with empathy and love lit up, but when they were shown urban scenes the parts of the brain linked with fear and anxiety were activated. The findings concluded that nature inspires feelings that connect us to each other and our environment. There is even such a thing as “nature deprivation” and its symptoms are (amongst others) depression, a loss of empathy and a lack of altruism. So, have we lost our affection for nature? Not according to studies focusing on environmental psychology. They demonstrate that we still have very positive reactions to nature and natural environments, a so-called ‘Biophilia’. Nature reduces stress, improves mood, improves cognitive performance and deep down in our bones we haven’t really forgotten that.

108

HOME COUTURE

This doesn’t mean we should leave our homes in favour of huts in the woods, merely that if you’re not feeling 100% it could be something as simple as a lack of a relationship with nature that is causing it. With that in mind, it makes perfect sense that we would try to introduce nature into our every day lives and into our homes and to be honest, without realising it, we have been doing just that anyway. How many times have you walked into the bathroom of somebody’s house to find that it is beach themed? Or, even just mimicking the pale blue of a summer sky with the odd seashell here and there? And that’s exactly what it is, mimicking. Or ‘Biomimicry’ to be precise. We know that nature is pretty much foolproof - natural selection is the process of nature trying something and if it doesn’t work then immediately opting for a route that does. Nature is therefore one of the greatest designers of all time and it makes perfect sense to mimic a system that has functioned perfectly since time began.

Take something basic like velcro for example; the design mimics burs that you find in hedgerows and other plants, which use a system involving hooks and loops that stick together. Honeycomb is recognised as an excellent structure to insulate and reinforce cavities in construction, and a spirit level uses simply liquid, air and the basic laws of the earths physics. Decoratively, acanthus leaves were used extensively to adorn Roman columns and later William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement celebrated their ornamental virtues in wallpapers and fabrics. The use of natural

forms in design combines excellent functionality with a feeling of wellbeing and it allows us to choose items for our interiors that mimic nature.

Valentine’s Special

Sexy Food

Humans have been obsessed with aphrodisiacs for centuries. In Europe, up to the eighteenth century, many recipes were based on the theories of Roman tales. Roman physician, Galen, wrote that foods worked as aphrodisiacs if they were ‘warm and moist’ and also ‘windy’ meaning that they produce flatulence! Ancient Egyptians were quite convinced that leafy vegetables could spice up their love life. They consumed them not because they were worried about high blood pressure or heart disease, but because they believed they were aphrodisiacs.

118

It was said that those who consumed lettuce on a fairly regular basis were more fertile and had more stamina than those who did not. Some ‘aphrodisiacs’ since then have been somewhat less pleasant and sometimes even dangerous. In Eastern parts of the world things like cobra blood, sea cucumber, ants, elephant tusks, bones from various animals are all considered to boost sex drive but some aphrodisiacs have led to near extinction of endangered animals such as the tiger and black rhinoceros.

Photo: Raphael Tecksten

Our resident health and nutrition expert, Bettina Campolucci Bordi brings us the ‘foods to get you in the mood’ this Valentine’s day.

Most aphrodisiacs have been proven useless, but that doesn’t stop mankind’s search for the ultimate love potion. Fortunately for you, there are plenty of ways to boost your libido, energy and passion without relying on anything dangerous, illegal, disgusting, or just plain stupid. Nature has given us plenty of commonly known foods that can help. Want to improve your performance in the bedroom? Eat your way to a better sex life with these passion-inducing foods.

Avocado The name for this South

American fruit comes from the Aztec language Nahuatl, in which it meant “testicle”. A name chosen for the fruit’s unusual shape. This buttery fruit is rich in essential fatty acids and B6 that both increase male hormone production. Avocado also contains potassium, which helps regulate the thyroid gland in women, a gland directly tied to energy and reaction to hormones. All in all, a winner, the best part is that here we can get our hands on them here all year around!

Dark Chocolate

More reasons to eat dark chocolate (hurrah!) We have relied on this sweet treat for generations to ease us through break-ups and heartache for good reason. Chocolate has bucket loads of antioxidants to keep the body healthy. But best of all it also encourages the release of endorphins that increase pleasure, improve mood, and simulate the feelings of falling in love.

Have you had your Maca today? Maca is a Peruvian root that has long

Bananas Bananas are rich in

been used by the local population to increase strength, stamina, energy, fertility, and libido for men and women. It is now available for the rest of us too at just about any health food store. Usually sold in powder form, add a dash to your smoothies and see how you feel.

potassium and B vitamins, which boost energy levels. They also contain the enzyme bromelain, which increases the body’s energy levels so that makes them a great snack to eat before a “workout” (wink, wink!). In addition, bananas are great for anyone who gets pre-date butterflies because they help to relax the nervous system. With all of these great benefits, no wonder bananas are one of our favourite fruits.

Pumpkin Seeds It is believed that up to 40% of

the adult male population is zinc deficient and zinc is one of the primary nutrients required by the prostate, used in sperm production and shown to reduce prostate diseases. Zinc deficiency has been linked to a major cause of low testosterone levels in men. Guess what - the often discarded seeds of the pumpkin are rich in zinc, which keeps the male sex organs healthy and productive. They also taste pretty fantastic and are a healthier snack option. They’re also great made into a nut butter instead of the classic peanut butter we are all so used to.

Flax Seeds Next up we have the flax seeds

that contain phytoestrogens that act very similarly to female hormones that are linked to a healthy sex life. Flax can be beneficial for women who have low estrogen levels, such as those experiencing menopause.

Where I Love to Eat My new favorite afternoon hangout is Urban Chai in San Pedro. The menu is simple and wholesome with good healthy options and lovely staff. Best of all there is a play park right opposite for kids. Some afternoons healthy kid snack packs are on offer with a little bit of everything! My personal favourite are the hearty salads that are on offer.

Divine D-Wine... Reviewed by Eleanor McKenzie Photos by Julia Roder

Perfect presentation and a sophisticated sense of place

A

s Marbella residents we are spoilt for wonderful places to eat and with St. Valentine’s Day coming up some of us are under pressure to find suitably romantic places to wine and dine our beloveds. Although tradition dictates that the gentleman usually arranges this aspect of the evening, now that we are in 2016 and there is much more fluidity in gender roles, it seems unfair to make chaps carry the responsibility for choosing and booking the perfect place to dine – if you know where you’d like to go then drop some very heavy hints. May I suggest that D-Wine restaurant in Azalea Beach, a well-located spot between San Pedro and Puerto Banús, is worth considering. Actually, scratch that – don’t consider it, just book it. D-Wine opened its doors in 2014 and caused quite a stir among Marbella foodies when it revealed that the substantial space would not just be a restaurant, it would include a wine shop that promised to not only offer lovers of the grape an extensive range of superior Spanish wines, it would also have expert sommeliers on hand to educate diners palates by perfectly matching wines to the restaurant’s dishes. Indeed, D-Wine has recently offered wine tasting classes and you may be astounded to know that it has some 4,000 premier wines for you to choose from. But, enough about the wine, what about the restaurant? D-Wine prides itself on offering sensational food with superior service. Its culinary philosophy is one of showcasing the traditional and the modern and there is a definite emphasis on flavour. In terms of the ambience, D-Wine has a stylish outdoor terrace and an elegant indoor dining area that is certainly more appropriate for this time of year, although for those of us who love dining outside then it is possible here due to the advanced heating and cooling

120

technology installed on the terrace. There is seating for 100 guests and if you’re looking for a place to hold a large, private party, then it should be high on your list. And now to the heart of the matter – the food! We had a simply exquisite experience at D-Wine and as you can see from the photos, the dishes are served up with great attention to detail and design. I promise you that every dish does taste just as good as it looks. It is said that the eyes stir the appetite first, and at D-Wine they really do know how to make sure that happens. It’s a 5-star food experience, with service worthy of royalty, which is why it is such an excellent choice for a memorable Valentine’s evening. For sure it is not somewhere that you can pop in for a quick bite. That simply wouldn’t do the establishment justice. This is a place to linger and appreciate the thought that goes into the selection of cocktails, the wine pairings with your chosen dishes and the pace at which you are served. You will never wait for too long between courses, and neither will they rush you. There’s no clock watching here! Neither will you find the service obtrusive: your wine glass will stay filled as if by magic and your needs are anticipated and filled practically before you even realize there is something else you want.

It is also very important to mention in this current culinary climate that all the products used are organic and local. With an abundance of fresh fish sourced locally, we opted for some of the restaurant’s fabulous fish dishes. We started with a simply stunning Fresh Tuna with Soya Sauce, Cucumber, Sesame Oil & Lemon Scented Maldon Salt with Green Apple Snow. The grated green apple that tops the dish creates an explosion of citrus sensations in the mouth It’s a dish that lingers in the memory long after it has left the mouth. A ceviche is a sure way to test a chef’s acumen and D-Wine’s Wild Fish Citrus Ceviche served with Tomato-Onion salad, Guacamole and Tomato Paper Roll accompanied by Corn Crisps became the Society team’s favourite dish within microseconds of us tasting it. It may well be in Society’s Top 10 Dishes of All Time - and we do eat out a lot!

And, on to the meat. The delicacy, not to mention the artistic arrangement, of the Classic style Carpaccio of finely sliced Wagyu Beef served with Rocket Salad, Citric Vinaigrette & ParmigianoReggiano made for a melt-in-themouth experience and the quality of the meat shone through. And for Foie Gras lovers, you need look no further than the Pan-fried Foie Gras served on toasted Brioche with warm Pedro Ximénez Jelly from Montilla-Moriles, Green Apple Coulis & Fresh Diced Mango. What a plate of richness, flavour and warmth. We could feel our souls rise with joy. For something more traditional, but with a bit of a modern twist, we chose the Grilled Galician Octopus served with Potatoes, mixed Bell Peppers & homemade Citric Mayonnaise that melted in the mouth. We know that diners are often concerned that octopus can be chewy, but it certainly isn’t at this restaurant. The D-Wine team is also very passionate about using seasonal produce and every week they put four new seasonal specials on the menu. Well, naturally, we just had to try them: the Wild Salmon with quinoa was amazing to eat and it’s super healthy, and whilst the steak with a side dish of fusilli pasta and tomato sauce or the mushroom pasta might be considered less virtuous by some, they were wickedly good.

the best food reviews in Marbella, and so we explored D-Wine’s delectable desserts with abandon. There is no doubt that World of Chocolate, which is Chocolate Fondant, Milk Chocolate Mousse & White Chocolate Ice-Cream in a Melting Chocolate Sphere with Hot Baileys Coffee Sauce, is a triumph of decadence and the divine – plus it’s quite spectacular as the hot Bailey’s melts ice cream and the whole effect is other worldly. And, if you’re not mad about chocolate then we suggest you try the caramel rice pudding – it’s full of the ‘feelgood’ factor. We’d have to say – don’t delay, book your Valentine’s evening extravaganza at divine D-Wine – it’s the perfect place for a taste of romance. Our expert wine connoisseur, Julio from D-Wine joins us once again with a mouthwatering combination of pan roasted turbot and Rioja wine.

SURPRISING WHITES

Pheasant of the Sea

The Rioja wine region is better known all over the world for its top-end red wines, but surprisingly there are some gorgeous barrel-fermented whites that wine lovers and gourmands should keep under the radar. Recognition of these wines doesn’t come easy - there is still a long way to go before the modern white Riojas will make it to the top of shop shelves worldwide.

Rioja white wines are primarily made from the Viura grape, known throughout the rest of Spain and southern France as Macabeo. A little Malvasia and Garnacha blanca are usually tossed into the blend, although the best producers may even add Chardonnay, Viognier, Marsanne and Rousssane to the blend.

D-Wine Advice Turbot is a tasty white fish that perfectly pairs with the food-friendly, crisp and zesty white wines from Rioja. Our turbot is pan-roasted and served on crushed baby potatoes with white wine and mushrooms accompanied by braised leeks and snow peas. This combination is a heavenly match with the enticing aromas and light mineral, lemon and cantaloupe flavors of the top white Riojas. These wines offer depth and complexity, along with pleasing floral and citrus flavors and a touch of Asian spices that perfectly balances the slightly meaty and juicy texture of the fish and the richness of the accompanying mushrooms.

PEANUT BUTTER Chocolate Cups There are so many benefits of making your own chocolate. This recipe is free from chemicals, preservatives and sugar! It is suitable for diabetics, vegans and chocoholics. I realise that some of these ingredients such as the cacao mass/butter are not available everywhere but this is a Valentine’s recipe so why not make an extra effort?

Ingredients 1 cup (100 grams) Cacao mass

2-3 tbs Peanut butter or Cashew butter

1/2 cup approx (50 grams) Cacao butter

Goji berries

* *

1 tsp Vanilla powder

*

1/3 cup (40 grams) Yacun Syrup or Agave syrup

TIP

If you can’t get hold of the cacao mass use a very good 100% cacao powder with the melted cacao butter. Start by melting the cacao mass and butter over a water bath. To do this place a bowl over hot water and let the butter/mass gently melt. Prepare small molds that you want to make your chocolate cups in. When the chocolate has melted, add the vanilla and yacun syrup. There should be enough for between 6-10 cups, depending on size.

124

* *

1 tbs of Desiccated coconut

*

A few pecans

Start by adding one layer and put the cups in the freezer to solidify and put the chocolate back on the water bath on the lowest heat so that it remains melted. When the cups have hardened take them out of the freezer and add a teaspoon of peanut butter in the middle. Top off with the remaining melted chocolate and decorate with pecans, goji berries and a sprinkle of coconut. Refrigerate so that they harden and enjoy! They will keep for several weeks if kept in an airtight container!

TIP

The reason that so many people around the world have begun to use yacon so much is its anti-hyperglycemic effects. The fructooligosaccharides in yacon mean that the body does not absorb any simple sugars; in fact, it lowers the amount of glucose production in the liver and causes a shift to lower fasting glucose rates. This is very important for people suffering from diabetes. Research also shows that its good for blood pressure, weight -loss, digestion and liver health. Talk about healthy chocolate!

Valentine’s Special

Cupid’s Arrow S

o trills Sir Walter Raleigh in Edward German’s light opera “Merrie England” (1902). (The title “Dan” is the antiquated English version of the Spanish “Don”). A vision of a little winged cherub wielding a bow and on the lookout for lovers springs instantly to mind. Or perhaps another vision of the aluminium cast statue standing in Piccadilly Circus in London, erected between 1885 and 1893 to commemorate the good Earl of Shaftesbury. Unfortunately, both visions would be wrong! Certainly Cupid is the Roman name for the Greek god Eros, but he was far from being an amiable little cherub, whilst the statue is, in fact, the god Anteros, his brother, the avenger of unrequited love. (He is distinguished from his brother Eros by his long hair and his plumed butterfly wings!). We find Eros first mentioned about 700 BC in a work by Hesiod, who lived about the same time as Homer. He describes him as having sprung with other gods from the original “world egg”, although later authors attributed different parentage for him, including at one stage Zeus and Aphrodite (which would have made Zeus both his father

148

and grandfather!)Armed with golden arrows to incite love and desire, and leaden arrows to quench them, Eros aimed his bow at gods and mortals alike, often creating havoc. As Greek

mythology gave way to Roman mythology, and Eros became Cupid, so he degenerated from being an attractive handsome god, sought by male and female, into the chubby mischievous cherub who to this day dominates Saint Valentine’s day.

His arrows have struck some notable figures over the ages, from kings to commoners. Edward VIII of England lost a throne over his love for a divorced American socialite. In his eyes she was “the perfect woman”. In the eyes of Parliament and the Church of England she was anything but, causing Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin to threaten to resign if the marriage went ahead. The marriage went ahead, and the king abdicated. A constitutional monarch could not succumb to Cupid’s darts.

The Emperor Shah Jahan of India (16281658) was not so constrained. In 1612 he fell madly in love with a woman he called the “Chosen One of the Palace” – Mumtaz Mahal. She died in 1631 giving birth to her fourteenth child, and with her dying breath asked her distraught husband to build her the world’s most beautiful mausoleum. He promised, and was true to his word. Set across the Jamuna river from the royal palace in Agra, the “Taj Mahal” gradually rose in splendour, its construction over two decades watched by the mourning Emperor from a special window in the palace. Its white marble façade, with its seventy five metre high dome, and set in forty two acres, glows pink at sunrise and a pearly white in the moonlight. Its refection in the river at night has given rise to the legend of a “Black Taj”.

So great was the Emperor’s love that he nearly bankrupted his empire by the construction, and when he died in 1666 he was buried alongside the woman whom he never ceased to love.

He was, of course, a Muslim, but must have been well aware of one of the greatest treatises on love ever written. Surprisingly, this was written by a celibate Hindu scholar, Vatsyayana, who flourished in the 5th century AD. It is recorded that he wrote the “Kama Sutra” as a tribute to Kama, the goddess of love. The book is, of course, famous as a manual of sexual instruction, but its main purpose was actually to provide instruction in meaningful relationships, providing a blueprint for courtship and marriage. About a thousand years before Vatsyayana set to work, a Greek poet was already writing about love, hatred, anger and jealousy. Sappho was born around the year 618 BC on the island of Lesbos, where she remained for the rest of her life. Married to the wealthy Cercylas, she devoted her time to the education of young women, giving them religious and educational instruction in preparation for marriage. She dedicated her work to Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. A popular belief has arisen that she was a lesbian, the name coming from the island on which she lived. This is patently false, as, quite apart from the fact of her marriage and, it is rumoured, her passion for a young sailor called Phaon, strong emotions and attachments between members of the same sex were far less taboo then than they later became. She bears testimony to the fact that throughout history some of the greatest romantic lovers have not been men, but women.

Such a one was Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861), whose literary reputation during the years of her marriage to Robert Browning far surpassed that of her husband, whom she adored. Her love for him spilled into her work, and gave rise to some of the greatest love poetry ever written. Sonnet 43 in “Sonnets from the Portugese” (a title chosen to disguise her own authorship of the poems and deep love for her husband – Victorian ladies did not advertise such feelings!) is exquisite:

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach... and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death.

Another Elizabeth, in our own day, was perhaps not so coy. The violet-eyed

and beautiful Elizabeth Taylor is perhaps best known, not only for her acting ability (two Oscars), but for her tempestuous love life. She was married eight times, twice to Richard Burton. This affair was so passionate and, many might say, steamy, that it earned a rebuke from the Vatican. It was certainly a far remove from the genteel but no less passionate love that existed between Elizabeth and Robert Browning, and perhaps might even have taught Vatsyayana a thing or two! Cupid was clearly a

trifle tired and emotional when he got Elizabeth and Richard in his sights! 149

ALL MOTOR VEHICLES MUST BE INSURED BY LAW DO I NEED TO INSURE MY VEHICLE EVEN IF IT’S OFF THE ROAD? Some insurance policies like medical cover are not compulsory, others such as fire protection for your property, are. Your vehicle however, must be insured at all times, even if it’s kept off the road in a garage. The minimum legal compulsory insurance is Civil Liability to cover any damage to or claims from a third party, resulting from your vehicle. The existing legislation (Royal Decree 8/2004) states that any car that is kept in Spain must be insured. Trailers and other special types of vehicles that weigh less than 750 kg and cannot be driven on Spanish roads are not required to have insurance. This also means that they cannot be parked on roads or kept on private land. If you own a vehicle that’s not insured you could face a fixed penalty from €601 up to €3,005, and your vehicle may be seized and immobilised. WHY DO I NEED TO INSURE MY CAR IF ITS KEPT IN A PRIVATE GARAGE The owner of a vehicle has a civil responsibility towards their neighbour and their property. Civil responsibility extends beyond car accidents on Spanish roads. If a vehicle, for example, kept in a communal garage, has a fire due to a short circuit, the

owner will be responsible for any resulting damages to third parties. The owner will also be liable for a fixed penalty fine, the amount will depend on the gravity of the situation, the length of time the vehicle has been without insurance, and if this is a repeat offense. IN WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES IS INSURANCE NOT COMPULSORY? If your vehicle has officially been temporarily or permanently taken out of circulation, for example it has been scrapped, then no insurance is required. If you own a vehicle that is not being used and you wish to avoid paying for insurance, then you can apply to have it temporarily taken out of circulation. However, to do this the vehicle needs to have passed its MOT. If the MOT has expired, then it must be taken again and passed, before applying.

HOW CAN I AVOID ANY FIXED PENALTY FINES The best option is to ensure you have adequate insurance protection for your vehicle at all times. Once your vehicle complies with Spanish regulations, you can then decide what the future use of your vehicle will be, and whether or not to keep it in circulation or take it out. Optimising your EUROPEAN LIFESTYLE QROPS or Qwhat? How well do you understand your retirement funds? If you are reading this, there is a strong likelihood that you are amongst the many expatriates who have taken, or are thinking of taking, advantage of the QROPS scheme to transfer your UK pension to a more tax efficient overseas location. But how well do you understand yours? Is it still working to your advantage, is it costing more than it should and most importantly is it still domiciled in a regulated jurisdiction? Contrary to the popular myth supported by myriad websites, forums and financial advisors of varying expertise, experience and repute, a QROPS pension transfer is not ‘a one size fits all’ option, neither at the moment of the transfer nor throughout its life and many factors need to be considered when choosing and maintaining the appropriate underlying investments, as well as the type of financial product and jurisdiction used to attain the optimal performance. QROPS pension transfers have long been, and continue to be, an integral part of wealth management strategies, but as with our health they require regular check-ups to maintain a peak performance. So when did you last have yours reviewed? Whilst your QROPS may have been set up in a regulated jurisdiction and adheres to a particular investment strategy that was pertinent at the time, is it still achieving an optimal performance, or has it become a costly exercise where fees and charges are now eroding any gains?

Many portfolios have been constructed with a long term ‘leave it and see’ approach and may be locked into illiquid investments, and/or held in jurisdictions that may no longer be the most efficient and are therefore both underperforming and generating more charges than they should. By having regular reviews or check-ups of your portfolio not only does it allow us to take advantage of acute changes in a volatile market, but also to react to macro factors such as pension reforms and changes in local regulations and pricing structures. The successful construction of your portfolio is crucial in realising gains, but becomes almost redundant if it is not held in a portfolio that allows those gains to grow in an efficient manner. The economic climate of late has been rather volatile and 2015 was no exception. Alarm bells were ringing with the slowdown in Chinese growth, slumping commodity prices, oil below $40, the Grexit saga, US interest rate hikes and negative returns in the major equity indexes to name but a few. Although it wasn’t all doom and gloom as many

major stocks listed on the CAC 40 and DAX as well as numerous sector specific funds were up over 10%, and although the FTSE 100 was down due mainly to Mining stocks, 58 of the 100 listed companies saw their share price rise. Whilst savvy investors may have capitalised on these events, how much attention has been paid to the UK pension reforms over the last few years and what effect they have had on your portfolios? You may well have managed these events successfully and seen gains in your portfolio whilst many passively managed portfolios have seen big downturns in 2015, but did you protect these gains or dispose of them on your tax obligations? If you are indeed one of those who has used, or are thinking of using, QROPS to transfer your UK pension and you would like to have your portfolio reviewed to see how it can be optimised to fulfil your financial goals, or you would like suggestions for additional concurrent or future investments, then please feel free to contact us here at Tourbillon Limited Private Client office where we will be more than happy to oblige.
