PUBLISHER’S LETTER

IF IT’S FEBRUARY

it must be Valentine’s Day!

Of course, we aim to please all our readers, so we hope that you will enjoy this February issue, which is packed with romance, from famous couples and great suggestions of where to eat on February the 14th without banjaxing all of your ‘New Year, new me’ plans, to hints as to who is best avoided when it comes to a date on the big day. Our cover star is Shakira – and what a year this woman has had! Not only did she have to postpone her eagerly awaited 2017 El Dorado Tour until this year because of a haemorrhage on her vocal cords, she and her husband, Gerard Piqué are being investigated for their financial affairs. It’s fair to say that she probably isn’t the easiest person to get on with (the term ‘diva’ springs to mind) but she has enjoyed a stonking career, winning a huge army of fans with her Latino songs, before switching to English for her sixth album. With a string of hits including ‘Whenever, Wherever’, ‘La Tortura’ and ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ you can be sure that ticket sales will be brisk at the four Spanish venues chosen for the tour. Who would you choose to be your Valentine? While KJ Elsdon has come up with a list of successful celebrity unions – not to mention some outright disasters! – Eleanor McKenzie has chosen to highlight some of the least appealing Valentines you could possibly imagine. Whether you’re male or female you won’t be able to help shuddering when you imagine a night out with this lot. Is there a better time for a marriage proposal than Valentine’s Day? If there is, we can’t imagine what it might be. If you’re planning to spring a surprise on your other half, then we have some expert advice from Lucy Barnes of Anthony’s Jewellers. With a world of knowledge picked up from her father and the experts at London’s Hatton Garden, Lucy is the person you need to speak to if you’re thinking of rewarding your long-suffering partner with a real sparkler. We are very lucky to have some fantastic – not to mention wonderfully healthy – restaurants on the Coast and this month we feature three of them. Top Thai is one of our favourite Asian venues, while Manuka has quickly garnered a sterling reputation for serving fantastic food. We also take a look at Breathe, an exciting new concept due to open in Puerto Banús shortly. I’ve been living on this Coast for some time now and I can’t remember a time that a new business has been awaited with such anticipation. Believe me, the minute Breathe opens its doors the staff will probably be injured by the stampede of locals charging through the door to find out what this living monument to eco-cuisine is all about. We also feature some of the most stunning property on the Costa del Sol, Ian Kuah takes the brand-new BMW M5 for a spin, Padre Peter puts his historian’s hat on again to recall the time when Britain ruled the waves and Eleanor McKenzie looks at what this year might hold for ICOs. If you don’t even know what that means, then you cannot possibly miss her fascinating article on the latest thing to hit the internet. Okay, we’ve given you a good head’s start on Valentine’s Day, so now it’s up to you. Book a table at the fancy restaurant, buy some flowers, maybe even a diamond ring and see what happens. ‘Til next time… Andy Clark

Solid Gold Future? By Kj Elsdon

What’s up with Shakira? If you’re a fan of the half-Colombian, half-Lebanese hip-wiggler then you will be delighted to learn that the singer will be taking to the road in 2018 for a world tour that will encompass North America and Europe to promote last year’s album, El Dorado. Largely inspired by her marriage to football legend Gerard Piqué, Shakira’s 11th studio album was due to be supported by an extensive tour closer to its release, but this plan was scuppered by a haemorrhage on the singer’s right vocal cord. So, strap yourselves in and book your tickets for Bilbao, La Coruña, Madrid or Barcelona because 2018 looks as if it will be the year of Shakira.

B

orn Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll on the 2nd of February 1977 in Barranquilla Colombia, the only child of William Mebarak Chadid (born in Lebanon but emigrated to Colombia with his family at the age of five) and Nidia Ripoll Torrado, the young Shakira showed an early interest in writing poetry. Seeing her father writing stories on a typewriter, she asked for one for Christmas when she was seven and claims to have continued to write poetry steadily ever since. Her father also unwittingly sparked her interest in music, taking her to a Middle Eastern restaurant near her home in Barranquilla where she first heard the doumbek, a drum traditionally used in Arabic music, especially to accompany belly dancing. The rhythm had such an effect on her that, as legend would have it, she started dancing on the table. No wonder that she eventually had the confidence to travel to Bogotá and persuade Sony Colombia executives that she had the right stuff to become an international recording artist. Naturally, the first step was to launch Shakira as a Latino performer. Her first offering, Magia, was made when she was only 13 years old and is an especially remarkable feat when the extent of her involvement in the writing and recording process is noted. She was less pleased with her second album, Peligro, which was released in 1993 and failed to deliver the sound for which she was aiming, although it remains an important milestone in her development as a songwriter and singer. The final contribution to her Sony Colombia threealbum deal was Pies Descalzos, released towards the end of 1995. Abashed by the commercial failure of her first two releases, Shakira managed to elbow her way through to the mixing desk and ensured that her third

12

collection of recordings would at least be closer to her vision of what she wanted to create – even if it didn’t sell the millions of copies for which the Sony executives were clearly hoping. The Latino market is extremely lucrative, especially in North America, where the six releases from Pies Descalzos enjoyed some success. The lead single, ‘Estoy Aqui’ even made it to Number Two on the Billboard Latin Charts. This was just enough to persuade the Sony suits that it might be worth financing a world tour on the back of these sales figures and, in March 1996, Shakira departed on a 20date tour which finally ended in 1997. Returning to the recording studio for her fourth release, she proved to have lost none of the control freakery that had marked her previous outings and, with the highly experienced Emilio Estefan Jr. taking up duties as executive producer, Shakira took the producer’s chair,

“I PREFER AN UGLY TRUTH TO A PRETTY LIE. IF SOMEONE IS TELLING ME THE TRUTH THAT IS WHEN I WILL GIVE MY HEART.”

ensuring that if this album didn’t build on the success of Pies Descalzos at least she would have created a soundscape which was uniquely her own. The album was a huge success, capturing the Number One slot on the US Latin Billboard Album Chart and holding on to it for 11 weeks. Altogether eight songs were released as singles, two of which (‘Octavo dia’ and ‘Ojos Asi’) received a Grammy each. On August the 12th 1999 Shakira recorded her first live album, MTV Unplugged, in New York City. This garnered another Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album in 2001 and left her in a strong position to attempt the crossover from Latin to mainstream. After working for more than a year on material for her first English language album, Laundry Service, releasing its first single ‘Whenever, Wherever’ (known as

Celebrity Spotlight

‘Suerte’ in its Spanish form) in advance of its release. The song quickly became an international hit and successfully ramped up expectations in advance of the album’s release. While some critics took issue with the singer’s comparatively weak grasp of English (Elizabeth Mendez Berry of Vibe magazine wrote, “While her Spanish-language albums sparkled with elegant wordplay, this record is rife with clichés, both musically and lyrically...For Anglophone Latin lovers, Shakira's lyrics are best left to the imagination”), music lovers took to the new, repackaged Shakira and Laundry Service went on to sell millions of copies, becoming the seventh best-selling album in the world in 2002.

That’s not to say that this latest album was a flop – far from it. The nay-sayers, who predicted that flip-flopping from the English language market back to Shakira’s original Latino fans was a mistake, were confounded and Fijación Oral Vol. 1 sold well. So well, in fact, that it was followed in November 2005 by Oral Fixation Vol. 2, which spawned the hits ‘Don’t Bother’, ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ (a collaboration with ex-Fugees Wyclef Jean) and ‘Illegal’.

The triple-platinum sales of Laundry Service prompted the Shakira publicity machine to move into overdrive, constructing the demanding six-month, 61-date Tour of the Mongoose, which covered North and South America and Europe. This proved a massive success, both critically and financially, with the final box office tally reaching $72 million. Shakira’s next album would see her returning to her Latin roots; the release of Fijación Oral Vol. 1 was preceded by ‘La Tortura’, a track that she had recorded with Latino heartthrob, Alejandro Sanz and publicised with an absurd video which features a moody Sanz being tempted by an inexplicably oil-covered Shakira, shaking her ‘thang’. The impression that the undeniably lovely singer lacks a sense of humour – not to mention the talent for self-mockery – was cemented here.

“I ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT WOMEN HAVE RIGHTS AND THAT THERE ARE SOME WOMEN THAT ARE INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO CLAIM THOSE RIGHTS. THERE ARE SOME OTHERS THAT ARE STUPID ENOUGH NOT TO.”

In early 2008, Forbes magazine named Shakira the fourth top-earning female artist in the recording industry, which was before she signed a 10-year deal with Live Nation, one of the world’s largest

and most powerful international touring organisations. The following year marked the release of She Wolf, which failed to perform as well as many of her other studio albums. However, she had more success with the official song for 2010’s World Cup, which was held in South Africa. Recording with popular local band, Freshlyground, ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)’. It became the biggest selling World Cup single of all time and was sung at the opening and closing ceremonies. The same year also signalled a return to her Latin roots for Shakira, with the release of Sale el Sol, which proved more of a success than She Wolf, selling

strongly throughout Europe and Latin America and, backed by The Sun Comes Out World Tour, increased the singer’s personal fortune. However, there was trouble ahead as she separated from her long-time partner and personal lawyer, Antonio de la Rúa. Eventually the situation became so heated that, in 2013, she would be sued for the $100 million de la Rúa believed he was owed. Fortunately for Shakira, the case was thrown out of court and she went on to attract even more media interest when she started to date international footballer, Gerard Piqué who she would go on to marry and with whom she would have two children. Her first pregnancy and a stint as a judge on the American version of The Voice played havoc with her schedule, so it was March 2014 when her self-titled, 10th studio album was finally released. The album contained three hit singles, namely ‘Can’t Remember to Forget You’, ‘Empire’ and ‘Dare (La La La)’. It received largely positive reviews and performed better in the charts than any of her other international albums, even beating Laundry Service into second place. Shakira started work on her latest outing, El Dorado, in 2016 and it was released in May 2017, having already enjoyed success with ‘Chantaje’, the first track to be released. El Dorado would go on to launch another two hits in the shape of ‘Me Enamoré’ and ‘Perro Fiel’. A world tour in support of the album had to be postponed after it was revealed that Shakira had a haemorrhage on her right vocal cord and will now take place from June to September in 2018. Spain loves Shakira, possibly more than any country on Earth and, as a reward for their loyalty four dates have been included, in Bilbao, La Coruña, Madrid and Barcelona. No doubt the fans will turn out in force to sing along to hits like ‘Suerte’, ‘La Tortura’ and ‘Hips Don’t Lie’. However, there might also be trouble in store for Shakira and Piqué as the Spanish tax authorities conduct a Lionel Messi-style inquiry into the couple’s financial arrangements. Whatever the outcome of this lengthy process will be, it will be good news for fans, as Shakira will doubtless continue to work in order to fill up any holes in her finances. Whenever, wherever, she will be coming to a city not too far away from us very soon!

Colin Firth Ditches Woody Allen As the #MeToo campaign gathers momentum it looks as though things are becoming increasingly uncomfortable for Woody Allen, especially when actors of the calibre of Colin Firth are queueing up to confirm that they will no longer appear in his movies. Allen’s estranged adopted daughter Dylan has accused the filmmaker of abuse in the past, but it seemed that the public mood was not geared towards listening to her, as she stated that her father first assaulted her in 1992 when she was just seven years old, the same year that Allen’s marriage to Mia Farrow understandably imploded. In a tearful statement Dylan, now 32 years old, told CBS This Morning’s Gayle King, “I am credible and I am telling the truth and I think it’s important that people realise that one victim, one accuser matters and that they are enough to change things.” Not even his marriage to another of Farrow’s adopted children, Soon-Yi, was previously sufficient to depose the Annie Hall and Manhattan creator from his position as one of America’s most revered directors, but it seems that now the party is well and truly over for Woody Allen.

Paltrow and Martin Move On

They attracted international ridicule following their ‘conscious uncoupling’ and have clearly made an effort to stay close for the sake of their children, but in the past few weeks news has broken of Gwynnie’s engagement to Glee creator, Brad Falchuk and now it looks as though Chris Martin has found romance in the shape of Fifty Shades star, Dakota Johnson. Any celeb watchers who have been secretly hoping that the couple will find a way to forget their differences and consciously recouple must now be convinced that the split is permanent. It is claimed that Paltrow has already turned into a major league Bridezilla and is planning a May wedding to remember – but all on the cheap. Apparently, the Goop CEO is claiming that, with all the corporate sponsors and partners that have been doing business with her frankly barking mad company offering freebies, she could actually make money! Every bride-to-be in the world must be wondering how to work a similar scam.

Tom Hardy’s Rap Sheet

Entertainment charts

We make no apology here for our complete and abject adoration for Tom Hardy. In fact, the SOCIETY team is a close-knit collection of Hardy obsessives that prides itself on knowing EVERYTHING about the star, but we must confess that we were taken aback by the news that he was once on the verge of a career as a rapper! Yes, news that a mixtape entitled ‘Falling on Your A**e in 1999’ that Hardy made with his mate Edward Tracy has recently resurfaced and moves are afoot to persuade the duo to go on tour. Eddie Too Tall, as he dubbed himself when he was providing the duo’s beats, is now a serious music producer and is keen to persuade his erstwhile bandmate, Tom No.1 (rap and vocals) to take to the road. What is Hardy’s opinion about this unexpected turn of events we can only guess at, but we would pay good money to see the duo reunited almost 20 years after their first foray into the music industry. Make it happen, please – and soon!

It’s Awards Season Again!

Call us contrary but, while we are as eager to see which stars and movies are nominated for an Oscar as anyone, what really grabs our attention every year are the Razzies. Film buffs claim that it’s possible to learn more about movie-making from an eye-wateringly bad film than a classic and, if so, the Razzies are an essential annual bellwether of the industry. Fifty Shades Darker is a movie that we won’t be queueing up to see, that’s for sure. It has garnered no fewer than EIGHT nominations, including Worst Actress (Dakota Johnson), Worst Actor (Jamie Dornan), Worst Director (James Foley) and Worst Screenplay. Not that some actors with rather fine reputations escape unscathed: Anthony Hopkins (yes, Anthony Hopkins!) is nominated as Worst Supporting Actor for his turn in Collide & Transformers XVII: Last Knight, while Jennifer Lawrence is a Worst Actress nominee for her appearance in Mother! No room here for Daniel Day-Lewis or Gary Oldman, obviously.

Elton Bows Out

Probably the biggest news on the music front is Elton John’s decision to give up touring after a lifetime on the road. The pint-sized workaholic has not only cowritten some of the finest pop songs of the 20th and 21st centuries, he has also clocked up a few million miles while taking his show on the road. Following a massive health scare after he contracted a potentially deadly bacterial infection after performing in Chile and the death of his mother last year, it seems that Sir Elt has decided to have a second look at his future. Although his long-time partner, David Furnish has always claimed that the real Rocket Man (thank you, President Trump!) would make the worst house husband in the world it looks as though we will have to make do with his recording career from now on. However, there is some good news – the singer’s retirement will only take place following a 300-date, three-year world tour which will thank loyal fans for their support over

the past four and half decades. Following this, we are hoping that Elton will finally put his feet up and spend some time with Furnish and their two young sons. This humungous world tour though – isn’t that a bit like saying that you’re going to give up sugar for the sake of your health, but only after you’ve consumed the contents of a whole cake shop?

Famous Relationships

& Romantic Failures

E

veryone loves a good, old-fashioned love story and if it happens to involve a couple of mega-famous people, then so much the better. It was ever thus – from the high drama of Frank Sinatra’s ill-fated marriage to Ava Gardner to the longevity of Kirk Douglas’s union with Anne Buydens, whom he married in 1954. It’s true that some marriages don’t last, but some of those that peter out with time still manage to set the gold standard for highoctane romance - while others are lessons in how not to choose a life partner.

RICHARD BURTON AND ELIZABETH TAYLOR

Would any mention of high romance be truly complete without at least a passing mention of Hollywood’s golden couple? After meeting on the set of Cleopatra in 1960, the four times married Taylor and Burton, a promising but far less famous actor from a Welsh village called Pontrhydyfen, decided that they couldn’t live without each other, which caused something of a scandal. In the 1960s adultery (even of the celebrity variety) was considerably less acceptable than it is now and both parties were married, Burton to Sybil Williams, Taylor to Eddie Fisher, who she had only recently managed to wrestle from the arms of Debbie Reynolds. However, once the Hollywood irresistible force collided with the Welsh immovable object, Fisher was dropped from a great height, as Tinseltown’s latest golden couple paraded their relationship. They married in 1964, divorced in 1974 and then briefly married again the following year, divorcing again in 1976. Perhaps it was the fault of their magnificent performances in the 1966 movie version of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? that has sealed their reputation as the couple who couldn’t live together, but couldn’t happily live apart either. In the end

18

Taylor’s subsequent husbands (Senator John Warner and Larry Fortensky) and Burton’s wives (Suzy Miller and Sally Hay) would find themselves competing against the memory of the Taylor-Burton marriage. Only Burton’s death in 1984 finally put paid to the rumours that one day he and Taylor would reunite.

RONALD REAGAN AND NANCY DAVIS

Whatever you might think about The Gipper’s political views or Nancy’s illconceived and naïve “Just Say No” campaign against drugs, you must admit that they had staying power as a couple. Having married in 1952, three years after Ronnie’s nine-year marriage to fellow thesp Jane Wyman fell apart, the pair obviously had what it took to ensure that their union survived. Nancy was also an actress, although she had failed to scale the dizzy heights that Wyman had managed, but it was during Reagan’s second career as a politician that she truly came into her own. Either originating or repeating the fact (depending on which source is being consulted) that, “A woman’s like a teabag – you never know how strong she is until you put her in hot water”, here was a woman who walked the walk as convincingly as she talked the talk. Even the most liberal, Bernie Sanders-supporting liberal must surely have some admiration

Entertainment charts

for a woman who stood by her man, when running for one’s life would have been viewed as a far more sensible option. The Reagan-Davis marriage ended only in 2004 with Ronnie’s death from pneumonia, complicated by Alzheimer’s disease. Nancy outlived him by 12 years but, for the former First Lady of the United States of America, life would never be quite the same without her beloved Ronnie.

STING AND TRUDIE STYLER

Far be it from us to give the impression that only the oldsters know how to build a successful relationship – Sting and Trudie have been together for a whopping 35 years, ever since Sting’s first marriage to actress Frances Tomelty started to unravel. If, as a friend once proposed, celebrity marriages should be measured in dog years, the equivalent of 10 for the first year, eventually rolling back to four when the relationship becomes more established and the amount of faff involved in breaking up is too formidable, then the Sumner marriage is a modern miracle. Perhaps it’s the tantric sex, perhaps it’s the fact that the couple, who still maintain bases in several countries, spend enough time apart to maintain the spark in their romance, but whatever they’re doing, we would love to know because it obviously works brilliantly.

IT’S TRUE THAT SOME MARRIAGES DON’T LAST, BUT SOME OF THOSE THAT PETER OUT WITH TIME STILL MANAGE TO SET THE GOLD STANDARD FOR HIGHOCTANE ROMANCE - WHILE OTHERS ARE LESSONS IN HOW NOT TO CHOOSE A LIFE PARTNER.. BARRY MANILOW AND GARRY KIEF

Despite a brief two-year marriage to Susan Deixler in the mid-1960s, rumours had been circulating about the true nature of Barry Manilow’s sexuality for decades, when he announced in April 2017 that he was not only gay (we had guessed, Baz) but had married his manager and long-term partner Garry in 2014! How he kept this under his hat for so long is anybody’s guess, especially after releasing the high camp glitter fest that is ‘Copacabana’, but he and Kief had been an item since 1978. Manilow admitted that he had engaged in a lengthy campaign of smoke and mirrors, since he was terrified of alienating his huge army of female fans but, to his surprise, they were entirely accepting and supportive of his choice of partner.

Entertainment charts

DENNIS HOPPER AND MICHELLE PHILLIPS

Even by Californian standards the marriage of deranged cinematic maverick Hopper and The Mamas & The Papas singer Phillips was a short-lived phenomenon. His previous marriage to actress Brooke Hayward had lasted eight years, but this latest effort would last but eight days. Yes, eight days! Even by the low standard of Hopper’s sanity, this was pushing the envelope. The couple tied the knot on October the 31st 1970 and filed for divorce on November the 8th. Seemingly as unhinged as the characters he played, Hopper would go on to marry a further three times, divorcing his final wife, Victoria Duffy virtually on his deathbed because of her “outrageous conduct”. Filmmaker David Lynch revealed that Hopper had petitioned to be awarded the role of violent psychopath Frank Booth in his 1986 movie, Blue Velvet by continually phoning him to hiss, “You have to let me play Frank Booth. Because I am Frank Booth!” Lynch felt it necessary to consult the cast and crew about his casting problems: “Dennis Hopper keeps telling me that he is Frank,” the quirky moviemaker said. “That’s great for the picture – but how are we going to have lunch with him?”

TOM HANKS AND RITA WILSON

So far our long-lasting relationships have featured couples who share a similar vintage and so it is with Hanks and Wilson. Both born in 1956, this pair originally met in 1981 on the set of TV sitcom Bosom Buddies, reuniting in 1985 for Volunteers, a mostly forgotten comedy film about a spoiled rich boy (Hanks) finding himself in the Peace Corps. Hanks’s marriage to actress Samantha Lewes was in trouble and soon he and Wilson had decided to set up home together, marrying in 1988. Hanks even converted, becoming a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, the religion to which the Wilson family adhere, in order to please his new wife’s relatives. Perhaps it’s this eagerness to help that has ensured the longevity of the relationship, but whatever the true facts are, this is a marriage stronger than pretty much anything else you’ll see in Hollywood right now.

Of course, not all unions are quite as long-lasting as the examples quoted above. Given the collision of egos and careers that showbiz marriages entail it’s not surprising that there have been so many spectacular failures over the years... MICHAEL JACKSON AND LISA MARIE PRESLEY

The tabloids really whipped themselves up into a frenzy over this one. “The King of Pop Marries the King of Rock & Roll’s Daughter!” the headlines screamed, as though the whole event was a publicity stunt. Of course, we wouldn’t be so cynical but, given the controversy that surrounded

20

Jackson’s sexuality throughout his life it’s likely that getting hitched was a smart move. The ‘happy’ couple tied the knot in 1994, 20 days after Presley’s divorce from her first husband, Danny Keough but by 1996 they were heading for the courts to have the marriage dissolved. Despite this, Presley spent the following four years virtually following Jackson around the world, offering support over the child molestation allegations that constantly buzzed around him but never quite managed to stick.

Entertainment charts

JASON ALEXANDER AND BRITNEY SPEARS

You know when you say that you will stick by the person next to you, “Till death do us part”? Well, it’s a lovely thought, but sometimes it doesn’t work out that way – just ask Britney Spears. During a trip to Las Vegas with her long-time friend Jason Alexander, the Mickey Mouse Club graduate found her feet leading irresistibly to the Little White Wedding Chapel where, quite possibly fuelled by too many Babychams, the couple made the dubious decision to tie the knot. It seems that the old saying “marry in haste, repent at leisure” applied in this case because the marriage lasted a mere 55 days.

EDDIE FISHER AND ELIZABETH TAYLOR

You would have thought that the effort of seducing a friend’s husband so that he makes the decision to leave his wife and children to move in with you would ensure at least a few months of domestic tranquillity. Maybe for we normal mortals – not so for Elizabeth Taylor who was, at the time, admittedly renowned as the most beautiful woman in the world. Still reeling from the death of her third husband, producer Mike Todd, in a plane crash in 1958, Taylor didn’t waste much time in making her move on super-bland actor and singer Eddie Fisher. Despite the fact that he had been married to America’s sweetheart, Debbie Reynolds, for only four years it didn’t take long for Taylor to make her move. A mere year later Taylor encountered Richard Burton and the rest is history – as was Eddie Fisher.

On NYE I attended a fabulous party at LØV Olivia Valere with my husband and 12 friends. The entertainment was amazing, the venue was stunning (very decadent) and the food was good, with a wide variety of dishes, although I was slightly disappointed there was no vegetarian option. That’s normal in Spain, I guess! The champagne kept flowing all night and, by midnight, everyone was dancing on tables and enjoying their traditional 12 grapes. We certainly welcomed 2018 in style.

Sierra Nevada

Next was our annual family ski trip to Sierra Nevada where we stayed at the beautiful El Lodge Hotel. What can I say about this wonderful boutique hotel, apart from simply stunning? From the views of the mountain from the balcony (complete with jacuzzi) to the outside heated pool or the fabulous restaurant, I have nothing but praise. It’s beautifully

decorated in faux fur and cow hide with fire pits outside to keep you warm while watching your fellow skiers. There’s a wonderful spa and a kids’ playroom, complete with everything they need to entertain themselves while you

Even though we head to the slopes every year I’m actually a ski virgin. Any sport that involves an ambulance at the bottom of a mountain is not for me! However, in the interests of trying to show my kids to explore new things I was persuaded to have some lessons with one of the inhouse instructors. I must say that I’m an excellent skier - it’s the stopping I haven’t quite mastered yet, although I only fell once, so not too bad for a beginner!

London

The amount of times I have flown to London lately I’m sure it would be easier to learn to fly my own plane! This time it was to say our final farewells to the beautiful Becka in a stunning rose-gold celebration of life. Becka will never be forgotten but every effort was made to make sure she went off in style - pure Becava style! While in my favourite city I managed to squeeze in a quick dinner with friends at my new favourite restaurant, Park Chinois. Wow, what an incredible place - I loved it! The décor was stunning, the food divine and the sophisticated crowd kept us dancing to the live music while enjoying some of the signature cocktails.

Lunching with Lisa

With so much traveling it’s hard to find time to catch up with friends here, so as soon as I was home I met up with my friend Lisa to enjoy lunch and coffee at the MC Cafe in Marbella. Being part of the Marbella Club, you can expect excellent food, service and standards and, as always, it didn’t disappoint. Again, my outfit is Zara, but this time with Christian Louboutin boots.

For those who have been asking, my outfit here was from Zara, I like to mix up designer with high street, Zara probably being my favourite high street store. Shoes by Jimmy Choo, teamed with a YSL bag.

Riding

My girls love to ride and have been having lessons for over a year now. We recently discovered the Marbella Club Equestrian Centre, a hidden gem in Benahavís. It’s super clean, with friendly, helpful instructors who mostly speak English. While the girls were riding I couldn’t resist a quick picture with this handsome devil!

I have a serious passion for fashion (as you may know) so I was determined to get my hands on the boots that everyone who’s anyone has been wearing at fashion week - the Louis Vuitton Star Trail ankle boot! I’ll be wearing mine with a little black dress, glam Bardou hair and smoky eye make-up. Keep your eyes out for pictures shortly!

Pictures Mus Readt London Rules by Mick Herron London Rules might not be written down, but everyone knows rule one: cover your arse.

Whether you enjoy curling up with a good book or enjoying downtime with a drama series, KJ Elsdon bring you the top titles and series from the entertaining world of books and television.

Regent's Park's First Desk, Claude Whelan, is learning this the hard way. Tasked with protecting a beleaguered Prime Minister, he's facing attack from all directions: from the showboating MP who orchestrated the Brexit vote, and now has his sights set on Number Ten; from the showboat's wife, a tabloid columnist, who's crucifying Whelan in print; and especially from his own deputy, Lady Di Taverner, who's alert for Claude's every stumble. Meanwhile, the country's being rocked by an apparently random string of terror attacks, and someone's trying to kill Roddy Ho.

Jamestown Set in 1619 (and filmed in Hungary), the second series of this historical drama continues to follow the fortunes of the settlers as they get to grips with the many challenges of life in their new country, America. Of course, authenticity is sacrificed for the sake of drama and it’s likely that this new series will include the usual array of heaving bosoms and male violence. As one TV critic predicts, referencing the ground-breaking drama, The Crucible, it all looks likely to go a little Arthur Miller, as the women continue to display their feisty side and the men attempt to assert their ‘authority’. Happy days!

Over at Slough House, the crew is struggling with personal problems: repressed grief, various addictions, retail paralysis, and the nagging suspicion that their newest colleague is a psychopath. But collectively, they're about to rediscover their greatest strength - that of making a bad situation much, much worse.

Living the Life More Fabulous: Beauty, Style and Empowerment for Older Women by Tricia Cusden "There has never been a better time to be an older woman. We are fitter, healthier and living longer than at any time in history. My intention is to show you how to live your extra bonus of time as fabulously as possible." Living the Life More Fabulous is an irresistible guide to feeling great, whatever your age. Featuring topics such as beauty, style, confidence and health it provides advice on how to live an engaged life and keep an active mind. Whether you are looking for ideas to update your look, improve your general well-being or take an exciting or much-needed new direction, this book will encourage and empower you to live your life to the full.

The Tick Dara O’Briain’s Go 8 Bit The bright and affable host of Mock the Week and Robot Wars temporarily leaves BBC2 to bring us the second season of his celebrity computer in which he will pit his gaming skills against celebrities such as Russell Howard, Rachel Riley, Bob Mortimer, David James and Jason Manford. If you are a keen gamer or think that the era of ‘video’ games such as Pong and Tetris represents a halcyon era which has since been ruined by too much noise and realism, there will be something to amuse and divert you here.

Peter Serafinowicz’s sense of humour might not appeal to everyone but, apart from making something of a name for himself as a comic actor in Smack the Pony, The IT Crowd and How Do You Want Me?, the human gangle-machine (six foot three and probably ten stone when soaking wet) now has a hit on his hands in the shape of The Tick, a character probably best described as an anti-superhero. Clad in his blue ‘superhero’ suit, Serafinowicz is clearly happy to make himself look ridiculous to get the laughs. This new series builds on the quirky (some would say bizarre) humour displayed on his popular YouTube channel.

THE

Bad Valentine’s DATE GUIDE

On Valentine’s Day it is traditional to go out for dinner in the evening with your loved one. But, suppose you were offered a blind date? Here are 10 of the people we think you’d rather not find sitting across the table from you, no matter how flattering the lighting is.

The Men Kanye West There will only be room for his ego at the table. He might have penned a few good tunes no doubt, but it very quickly went to his head and before we knew it he was comparing himself to God and Jesus. He thinks he is the greatest living rapper, which is just an insult to Eminem, 50 Cent, not forgetting the deceased Tupac who would have easily put him in his place. And then there is his fashion label. It is extremely likely that he would turn up in something he designed himself. If you haven’t seen his idea of ‘design’, be warned, it’s definitely not Armani. And, he’s a fan of Donald Trump, but that’s probably because Kanye has designs on being President himself one day. And he believes he’d ‘make Kanye great again.’

#1

Donald Trump

#2 28

The self-proclaimed “stable genius” is most women’s worst nightmare. He wears heavy orange makeup, has ridiculous hair and repulsively, tiny hands. He’s paranoid and self–obsessed and will probably spend most of the time firing out tweets designed to encourage the start of WW3. You’ll probably have to eat at Burger King or McDonalds because he’s terrified of being poisoned and thinks that fast food is the way to avoid this. If you’re an environmentalist, he’ll tell you climate change is fake; in fact anything you say that he doesn’t like, will simply be ‘fake’. But above all, he thinks that grabbing a woman by the more private parts of her anatomy is perfectly OK behaviour. Probably the ultimate bad date anytime, anywhere. Worse than a serial killer? It’s a close run thing!

Uriah Heep

This character from Charles Dickens’ “David Copperfield” is one of the most sycophantic characters in literature. If you are able to stand him bowing and scraping to everyone and announcing that he’s “ever so ‘umble” then maybe you could stomach a dinner with the cadaverous villain who specialises in blackmail. The creepiness that he exudes has made his character one of the most malevolent in all of Dickens’ works and he created a few bad boys. But even Bill Sykes or Fagin would be preferable to this oily hypocrite.

#3

Issei Sagawa

This Japanese killer is most definitely off the menu. In 1981, he invited his Sorbonne classmate Renee Hartevelt to dinner at his apartment. After shooting her, he spent two days eating parts of her body and refrigerated some for a later date. He was sent to a mental institution, but is now out and about in the world. You have been warned!

#4

The Mountain

There are so many characters in Game of Thrones that women would love to have a date with, but there is one that should be given a miss and that is The Mountain. His real name is Ser Gregor Clegane and he’s the older brother of The Hound, who is rather more human, even though his brother held his face in a fire. The Mountain’s capacity for violence is legendary and it doesn’t take much to spark him off. Plus, he never speaks and is totally encased in armour, so where could the fun possibly be in dining with a mute in metal?

#5 29

The Women Kim Kardashian There are probably many men who think she’d be a great date and who would be delighted to spend time admiring her front and rear assets. However, remember that she married Kanye West, which already puts her taste into doubt. Apart from the fact that she’s very high maintenance, you probably won’t get past one or two dates with her, (her marriage to Kris Humphries lasted 72 days), or she might want you to feature in another scandal-causing sex tape that will make her even more famous. She also revealed in a TV interview that she “doesn’t like big balls on dogs, or anything else.” (So we can assume Kanye is all mouth and no trousers?) Oh, and she thinks it’s OK to pee in her Spanx!

Elizabeth Bathory The Blood Countess has been described as the most vicious female serial killer in recorded history. One writer described her reign of torture as the equivalent of “100 SAW films”, and if you’ve watched any of this film series, you’ll know why the description is blood curdling. Whilst Count Dracula is a fictional figure, the Countess was a real one and a member of a wealthy aristocratic family that ruled Transylvania in the 16th century. Elizabeth believed that drinking blood, and even bathing in it, would preserve her youthful looks. This date might literally bleed you dry!

Aileen Wuornos

#2

#1 30

Wonderfully portrayed by Charlize Theron in the film “Monster”, Aileen terrorised the state of Florida in the 1990s, where she shot seven men at point blank range over a period of time. She claimed each case was self-defence. She scored 32/40 on the Psychopathy Checklist, which is a high score. Her tendency to have seen all men as aggressors surely made a date with her one to avoid.

' YOU PROBABLY WON’T GET PAST ONE OR TWO DATES WITH HER, (HER MARRIAGE TO KRIS HUMPHRIES LASTED 72 DAYS), OR SHE MIGHT WANT YOU TO FEATURE IN ANOTHER SCANDAL-CAUSING SEX TAPE THAT WILL MAKE HER EVEN MORE FAMOUS.'

Violet Elizabeth Bott Fans of Richmal Compton’s “Just William” books, which recount the escapades of one William Brown, will remember his nemesis, the lisping Violet Elizabeth. In her war with William and his gang, Violet used Projectile Vomit as her weapon of mass destruction, as she constantly threatened William with “I ‘ll thcream and I’ll thcream ‘til I’m thick. I can you know”. And it always worked. Upset her at dinner and you know what to expect – a trip to the dry cleaners.

' IN HER WAR WITH WILLIAM AND HIS GANG, VIOLET USED PROJECTILE VOMIT AS HER WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION, '

#4 Angelina Jolie You’re probably thinking “What’s wrong with Angelina?” Let’s see what the pitfalls (no pun intended) there might be in dating Ms Jolie. Well, a recap of her life suggests she might just be mad as a box of frogs. As early as kindergarten she enjoyed kissing boys so that they caught cooties (that’s lice to non-Americans) from her. She enjoyed cutting teenage boyfriends with a knife for extra kicks and she’s been photographed kissing her brother.

Then there is the Billy Bob Thornton blood vial necklace and the assertion by some on YouTube that she isn’t a woman at all. She may be a major Hollywood star and a UN ambassador, but all the signs are there that dating this lady might have a similar risk level to playing golf during a thunderstorm. (Did you know that more people are killed every year by lightning while playing golf than are killed by a hurricane?)

'SHE ENJOYED CUTTING TEENAGE BOYFRIENDS WITH A KNIFE FOR EXTRA KICKS AND SHE’S BEEN PHOTOGRAPHED KISSING HER BROTHER. '

jewellery and inspect it really closely when I first showed an interest, which was when I was about 10 years old. I always say that it’s in my blood.” Having inherited her family’s love of fine jewellery and the best stones (being a stickler for quality), Lucy has amassed a wide range of knowledge that has ensured that customers have all the information they need before making a purchase. “Although there is obviously a steady demand for engagement rings we stock some beautiful earrings, pendants, crosses, chains, bracelets and necklaces,” says Lucy. “We also have items from Piaget.”

Anthony and family

F

ebruary might not spring immediately to mind when a discussion about favourite months takes place, but for many it’s a time for romance, with Valentine’s Day a prime chance to propose. Of course, you will need to be fully equipped if you are planning to spring a surprise on your intended other half, which is where Lucy Barnes of Anthony’s Jewellers can help you out. Happily acknowledging that diamonds are “in my blood”, Lucy benefitted from the considerable knowledge and experience of her father, the name behind Anthony’s Jewellers, a presence on the Coast since 1983. Anthony’s has welcomed more than its fair share of nervous soon-to-be fiancés and fiancées through its doors and expects

32

that February the 14th 2018 will be no different. “Valentine’s Day is definitely one of the most special days of the year for our customers and us,” says Lucy. “Can you name one woman who would turn down a diamond?” Having gained her grading certificates in Hatton Garden, one of the world’s most significant and important jewellery centres, Lucy felt sufficiently well informed to join the family business – not that she hadn’t taken an interest in the past. “I’ve grown up in jewellery shops!” Lucy explains. “My dad had a shop in The Lanes in Brighton, so I was able to pick up

However, it’s Valentine’s Day that really brings the real men to the fore and Lucy has found that some of them are sufficiently romantic to want their feelings to be reflected in the shape of their chosen ring. “We have found that heart-shaped diamond rings sell especially well at this time of year. However, if you’re looking for a classic engagement ring you can’t go wrong with a brilliant cut diamond. It might sound unromantic, but a diamond ring is a financial as well as a personal investment and you really don’t want to pay over the odds for an inferior stone.”

Anthony’s Jewellers has gained a reputation for selling top quality items at low prices and Lucy reveals that it is a focus on the famous four Cs that ensures that standards are meticulously maintained (Cut, Carat Weight, Colour, Clarity) “The cut or shape of the diamond will always be a personal choice and something that should best be left to the customer, but we can help with the clarity, which relates to the number of inclusions that a stone has and the colour. This is ranked from D down the alphanbet, with D being the best.” Excellent customer service is at the heart of everything Anthony’s Jewellers does and Lucy believes that, however undecided the customer is when entering the shop, the team has the knowledge and expertise to make coming to a decision about which piece to buy an easy one. “We always say that we want our customers to feel happy in the knowledge that they have bought a diamond for a third of the general retail price,” says Lucy, whose recent trips to London and New York have inspired her. Fortunately, she timed her travel perfectly, because she is now looking after her clients on the Coast again and is ready to offer advice to Valentine’s Day romantics. “Whatever design or type of diamond you have in mind, we can make sure that you leave the shop with something that is exactly right for you and your partner.” Avda. Ramón y Cajal, 40 Fuengirola. Tel: 952 588 795 Whatsapp: 609 529 633

THE MOST TRUSTED PAWN SHOP AND JEWELLERS ON THE COSTA DEL SOL HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED SINCE 1983. ANTHONY’S JEWELLERS HAVE GAINED A REPUTATION FOR SELLING TOP QUALITY ITEMS AT LOW PRICES AND LUCY REVEALS THAT IT IS A FOCUS ON THE FAMOUS FOUR Cs THAT ENSURES THAT STANDARDS ARE METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED.

THE ONWARD MARCH OF THE

ICOs B

$ By Eleanor McKenzie

In 2017 the boom in the number of Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) reached dizzying heights. Adverts for ICOs grew like daisies on Facebook and Twitter, offering investment opportunities to everyone in a diverse range of start-up businesses with products based on blockchain platforms. But what are they all about?

34

I remember seeing my first ICO promotion on Facebook, and because I’m interested and invested in blockchain assets, I just had to take a look. Now I am bombarded with adverts for ICOs. I can’t open Hotmail, or read a national newspaper online without banner ads for an ICO popping up, such is the reach of digital marketing.

3

Why do start-ups use ICOs? Why use an ICO rather than use more traditional routes to funds, such as bank loans or venture capital? Because an ICO is more like the crowdfunding model, which means a start-up can raise money from a large audience in a short space of time. It is faster and more ‘democratic’ let’s say than a bank or other traditional route to raising business capital.

B

1 2

An ICO also empowers business startups with products that operate on the blockchain, and the ‘blockchain’ element can be a stumbling block for the mainstream financial community. They are circling the blockchain sector, inspecting it, commenting on it, but haven’t quite decided yet whether or not they should take the plunge, or stay paddling on the shore. They are aware that the blockchain challenges the financial status quo, which is a worry for them, but they appear to be coming around to the idea that this is a wave that is building up momentum and it is probably better to embrace it, if still cautiously for the moment.

Fundraisers function The function of an ICO is essentially to raise money so that a start-up company can develop its blockchain-based product and market it. Basically, ICOs are only used for business start-ups working with the blockchain. What is the blockchain? It is a combination of already proven technologies applied in a new way. It was the particular orchestration of three technologies (the Internet, private key cryptography and a protocol governing incentivisation) that made Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto's idea so useful. The result is a system for digital interactions that does not need a trusted third party. The work of securing digital relationships is implicit and is provided by the elegant, simple, yet robust network architecture of blockchain technology itself. Imagine a network of computers interacting and creating a network, but no one computer is in charge. That’s decentralisation – and that’s the blockchain. Nearly everything else in our lives is centralised, i.e. there is a controlling entity. When you send money via your bank, the transfer is controlled by the bank, which is an example of centralisation. When you send a cryptocurrency from a digital wallet to another digital wallet, it’s the blockchain that enables it, and there is no one single entity in control of it. It also sends transfers much faster than your bank does!

INSTEAD OF OFFERING SHARES IN A COMPANY, AN ICO OFFERS DIGITAL ASSETS CALLED ‘TOKENS’ TO INVESTORS. A TOKEN SALE IS LIKE A CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN, EXCEPT IT USES THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND BITCOIN AND OTHER CRYPTOCURRENCIES TO VERIFY TRANSACTIONS.

4

IMAGINE A NETWORK OF COMPUTERS INTERACTING AND CREATING A NETWORK, BUT NO ONE COMPUTER IS IN CHARGE. THAT’S DECENTRALISATION – AND THAT’S THE BLOCKCHAIN.

How does an ICO work? Instead of offering shares in a company, an ICO offers digital assets called ‘tokens’ to investors. A token sale is like a crowdfunding campaign, except it uses the technology behind Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to verify transactions. The tokens aren’t just stand-ins for stock—they can be set up so that instead of a share of a company, token holders get other services, such as a crypto credit card, for example. If the business flourishes, the tokens rise in value, which means the token holders increase their profits. It’s also important to remember that the price of ICO tokens typically starts very low at around 10 to 20 cents each. Compare this with the cost of standard shares in a blue chip company and it is clear that ICOs appeal to people because they are affordable investments. You could say they are socially inclusive rather than exclusive.

35

5

ICOs and Innovation Without doubt, one of the reasons that ICOs have caught on is because they promote innovative products. Some of them are extremely practical and provide lifestyle solutions for a mass audience, whilst others are aimed at the games and leisure market. There is something to interest everyone in the ICO arena, but let me tell you about some of the more interesting examples that are out there. A revolution in personal loans This particular innovation will be of interest to people in Marbella, as although this Fintech start-up is UK registered, a significant number of the team working on it are based in Marbella. And, they have devised a very interesting concept for expanding the personal loans market onto the blockchain.

“IMAGINE A WORLD WHERE BORROWING MONEY WAS FAST, SIMPLE, BORDERLESS AND NO ‘CREDIT CHECKS’ WERE REQUIRED AND WHERE YOU COULD BORROW THAT MONEY AT LOW DOUBLE-DIGIT RATES AND RE-INVEST THE MONEY AT TRIPLE DIGIT RETURNS.”

B

Named Lendo, it has developed a blockchain-based platform that enables conventional loans companies to provide loans in Euros, Pounds or other fiat currency against cryptocurrencies as collateral. What’s the point of that? Well, in my previous article I mentioned that people who own crypto assets, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum or Litecoin, don’t want to sell them, because nobody knows just how far their values might rise. You would be desolated if you sold some of your crypto assets to pay a bill, only to find that over the next few weeks the value increased by double figure percentages. Getting back in to the market will therefore cost you a lot more, plus you have lost the position you may have built up over months and years. But with Lendo’s product, which has already been adopted by a network of FCAregistered lenders in the UK, crypto asset owners will be able to access the value in their crypto assets without selling them. And the UK loan companies can expand their business beyond the UK’s legal jurisdiction, because the crypto collateral for the loan is stored in a highly secure Vault on the blockchain. This gives them a bigger market. It’s a win-win for both lenders and borrowers. Plus it’s much cheaper than a conventional loan and there are no credit checks involved. They simply aren’t necessary with blockchain technology.

36

WITH LENDO’S PRODUCT, CRYPTO ASSET OWNERS WILL BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE VALUE IN THEIR CRYPTO ASSETS WITHOUT SELLING THEM.

6

As David Honeyman, Lendo’s CEO and a Marbella resident told SOCIETY magazine:” “Imagine a world where borrowing money was fast, simple, borderless and no ‘credit checks’ were required and where you could borrow that money at low double-digit rates and re-invest the money at triple digit returns.” Lendo also has a raft of other blockchainbased products and is talking about storing data in outer space. It has a pre-ICO starting mid February (a pre-ICO is the best time to buy tokens as they are always cheaper than and the bonuses are bigger) followed by a full ICO in April. So keep your eyes and ears open for the launch of this innovative product coming out of Marbella at lendo.io.

The future is meow! The blockchain also has entertainment uses. Who remembers Tamagotchi? I remember killing my son’s Tamagotchi by forgetting to feed it or some such thing. And Pokemon collecting went through a recent revival. In a similar vein, one blockchain start-up named CryptoKitties has created collectible digital kittens, and within a matter of weeks processed in excess of $12 million in sales on its decentralised marketplace. Each digital kitten represents a unique crypto asset and the ownership of it cannot be altered, as it is integrated onto the immutable Ethereum blockchain. I don’t recall how much I paid for a Tamagotchi, but it certainly wasn’t anything like the eye-watering price these digital kittens are going for. According to Kitty Sales, five of the rarest digital kittens on the CryptoKitties platform were sold for over $100,000 each, with the most expensive digital kitten being sold at around $120,000. Yes, you could buy a couple of cars with that! The value of the digital kittens on the CryptoKitties platform is based on rarity and scarcity, like every other cryptocurrency in the market with a fixed monetary supply. CryptoKitties didn’t use an ICO, they took a Sustainable Revenue Model Approach, which worked perfectly for this type of product.

$

CRYPTOKITTIES DIDN’T USE AN ICO, THEY TOOK A SUSTAINABLE REVENUE MODEL APPROACH, WHICH WORKED PERFECTLY FOR THIS TYPE OF PRODUCT.

7

POWERFUL RULES FOR ACHIEVING

New Year Goals Joanne explains, ‘I think I’m a bit lazy because I haven’t achieved the last few goals I’ve set myself.’ Whenever I hear this line from clients, I know that chances are, those goals weren’t the right goals for them and that’s why they failed to achieve them, not because they are inherently ‘lazy’ or a ‘procrastinator’.

Are you lazy or do you just need clarity on what you truly want to achieve and on the factors that can help or hinder you when pursuing your goals? In my new book, Resilient Me: How to worry less and achieve more, I share a wealth of research-based insights that have helped my clients achieve their goals in a short space of time - but for now let me share just a few quick tips with you as you embark upon your new year goals in 2018.

E 1: TRULY RUSLYOU’REBY

AL ATED GO SET MOTIV

When we set goals we’re not truly motivated to achieve, we can begin to associate our lack of progress with our abilities or our personality rather than recognising that it just wasn’t the right goal for us. It’s incredibly difficult to put in all the blood, sweat and tears for a goal you don’t really care about that much, so avoid setting goals for these three flawed reasons: • Because it’s how you were raised. Don’t let how you were raised in the past dictate where you’ll consider going in your future. Times have changed, opportunities have changed, society’s attitudes have changed, and real-world risks have changed (e.g. jobs aren’t necessarily any more secure now than self-employment).

40

Life is about taking calculated risks: ensure you have a driving motivation to achieve your goal and know you can handle the worst-case scenario. • Because your biological clock is ticking. Always look at the whole picture; don’t just pursue one goal at the cost of others. For example, your biological clock may be ticking but that doesn’t mean you should commit your life to a partner who doesn’t treat you considerately just because you’re 40 years old and want to have a baby. You also need to consider other factors such as how it will impact your life and your wellbeing, and the child’s, if you are raising a child in an unhealthy relationship.

• Because others are achieving those sorts of goals. Just because others in your life are achieving certain goals doesn’t mean goals of the same type or the same magnitude are right for you right now. Be thoughtful about where you are in your life at this moment, where you realistically want to get to and by when. Set those goals because you are desperate to achieve them for you, not because others think you should or because others are achieving similar things. If you can easily live without a thing, you won’t have the motivation to see you through all the challenges, so you’ll struggle to achieve that goal anyway.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

RULE 2RT: OF

O THE SUPP T OTHERS N A SIGNIFIC ERS A large body MATT of research demonstrates that when the significant people in our life have a positive attitude towards our behaviour, for example, the methods we employ for achieving a goal, we experience greater motivation. So, it’s important to ensure the important people in your life support the methods you intend to employ for achieving a goal, otherwise their discomfort may lead to your demotivation. If they don’t currently support your choices, find out why and what would need to change for you to gain their support. For example, they may be more inclined to support your weight loss methods involving exercising at home or in a gym than running outdoors in the dark.

'IT’S IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THE IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE SUPPORT THE METHODS YOU INTEND TO EMPLOY FOR ACHIEVING A GOAL, OTHERWISE THEIR DISCOMFORT MAY LEAD TO YOUR DEMOTIVATION. '

RULE 3

: EMOTION R EGULATION If you’re IS VITAL frequently in a negative emotional state, you’re going to find it very difficult to achieve your goals for a number of reasons, including a lack of motivation, a lack of self-belief and an inability to problem-solve, plan actions and make decisions well. While I cover a whole range of research-based emotion regulation strategies that are quick, easy and enjoyable, here are three of them, with examples included: • Socialising – seeing family/friends at home, going for a meal with your partner, going out dancing, attending a meet-up or interest group. • Indulging interests or hobbies – arts and crafts, computer games, hiking, dancing, reading, playing a musical instrument. • Being spiritual – praying, meditating, attending places of worship, reading religious books. ACHIEVING YOUR IDEAL BODY SHAPE PT.5 Matt Roberts is the UK’s leading fitness trainer. He has also written several bestselling books on the subject and worked with celebrity clients such as Tom Ford, Amanda Holden, Trudi Styler, Michael McIntyre, John Galliano, Mel C and The Saturdays. He also acts as a fitness expert for BBC Radio 2, BBC Breakfast, Sky News and frequently writes and runs seasonal promotions for The Times, The Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph.

T

his month I’m shifting things back to the upper body to focus on the shoulders, also known as the deltoids or delts for short. The delts are partitioned into three distinct heads; the anterior head at the front, the medial head in the middle and

• The landmine press – For most recreational exercises this should be your go-to option when it comes to pressing overhead. Not only does it offer a good hit on the delts (mostly anterior), it also offers lots of other great benefits. Firstly, the angle of the press helps to limit any compensatory movements commonly seen in other areas of the body during overhead pressing, such as excessive arching of the lower back and rib flare (people often lack the true range of motion to go straight overhead without compensation). Secondly, as the angle of the press improves the ability to resist lower back extension, it serves as a great abdominal exercise. Thirdly, using one arm at a time helps to even out any left-to-right strength differences, while simultaneously improving thoracic mobility (an area of the body where most people need more mobility) and dynamic stability of the shoulder blades (a key attribute for good shoulder health). See https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=jCfcGei-NqM for guidance.

#1 44

the posterior head at the back. The way you move the shoulder will affect which head contributes most to the exercise, so I’ll provide a choice for each one to help maximize growth and symmetry.

• Lateral raises – Probably everyone’s all-time favourite choice for hitting the medial delts, this is an exercise many people are likely to have included in their programs before. However, it’s important to ensure you’re doing it right to really stimulate the middle portion of the shoulder. When done correctly, this is an exercise that doesn’t call for big weights, so check the ego a little and go a bit lighter than your capabilities. Start with the dumbbells in each hand resting by your sides. Lift the arms out to the sides so that elbows come level with shoulder height and are positioned slightly in front of the body (the hands don’t need to go above the height of the elbow and the elbow can be slightly bent). As you perform the movement, to really hit the medial delts you need to add a little internal shoulder rotation by ensuring the front of the hand is tilted slightly towards the ground.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR FACTOR FEEL-GOOD

• Reverse Flys – Like the lateral raises, this is one of the more popular shoulder exercises for the posterior delts. It’s also similar in that when done correctly the weights don’t need to be heavy, as to stimulate the back of the shoulder the quality of the movement should take priority.

#2

There are a couple of options when it comes to the set-up with this exercise, but when muscle growth is the priority I prefer to straddle and lie prone (chest down) on an incline bench. This is because it reduces the stability demands that a free-standing, bent over position might require and allows for more effort to go into hitting the delts.

'AS YOU PERFORM THE MOVEMENT, TO REALLY HIT THE MEDIAL DELTS YOU NEED TO ADD A LITTLE INTERNAL SHOULDER ROTATION BY ENSURING THE FRONT OF THE HAND IS TILTED SLIGHTLY TOWARDS THE GROUND.'

Bonus Nutritional Tip The best post-worko ut nutrition strateg ies often depend on how much and wh en you ate prior to tra ining. If your pre-tra ining meal was a small one or you ate it se veral hours before traini ng, then it’s probab ly more important fo r you to get that po stworkout meal into your system quite quickly - ideally wi thin an hour. If you trained in a fasted state (say, first thing in the mornin g before breakfast) then it’s also a go od idea to eat a balanced meal as soon after your workout as you ca n. But if you ate a normal sized mixe d meal a couple of hours before traini ng (or a small shak e closer to training), then you have a ful l one to two hours after training to ea t your post-workout mea l and still maximize the benefits of workout nutrition.

Once in position on the bench, hold dumbbells in each hand and let the arms hang either side. Lift the arms out to the sides with elbows slightly bent and feel the shoulder blades move around the ribcage until they meet in the middle (use this to guide the range of motion rather than trying to get the arms as far back as you can). As you do the movement, to maximally stimulate the posterior delts you need to add some shoulder external rotation by ensuring the palms are turned up slightly.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR FACTOR FEEL-GOOD

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mind-blowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

EVERYTHING CHANGES

But You

While some of us enjoy revamping our image, others stick to what they know. With a third of us having had the same hairstyle our entire life, this month Jonathan wants you to ask yourself - am I stuck in a rut?

50

S

o, you are stuck in a rut! Aren’t we all? But before you go and do a Britney on us, take a second to reappraise and seriously consider the following; is this is actually a rut or are you are just pissed off with the world? The average woman only changes her hair colour three times in her life and, even then, it is often only brought about by a traumatic event. Beauty and style can be a reflection of how we are really feeling. Women stuck in a style rut can feel stagnated in their career or home life and, when we are in this kind of mood, we tend to attack our image. It is like a form of self-harm. Over the years, I have learned to recognise clients who claim that they are not happy with their looks, but in fact are not happy with their lives. Sometimes I think it would be better to give them the number of a good solicitor or psychiatrist, or both. When my clients come to me looking for a change it’s important for me to understand what it is they want to change and what is it that they are not currently happy with. This comes from a good consultation and knowing your clients. A change of look can be uplifting or a full-scale disaster. Honestly, there are days when I feel like heading to the hills, because if this change doesn’t exceed their expectations, who do you think will be first in the firing line?

IS IT REALLY TIME FOR A CHANGE?

Assess how long you’ve had this look and how happy you’ve been with it. If you really are stuck in a rut, work out how long you have looked exactly the same. Look back at photos. If you have not even changed the tone of your hair in the past decade, maybe we have an issue. If this is the case I would suggest, instead of trying a dramatic change of colour, shift it just one shade or two. Making a subtle change can make a huge difference to your confidence and it will get you noticed in all the right ways.

GET A PROFESSIONAL OPINION

Always talk any major changes through with your hairdresser and TRY to take their suggestions seriously. Impulsive decisions are often regretted and you may end up wanting to stay at home for the next six months or until your new look grows out. Take your time to figure out what you want to change. My rule of thumb for radical hair changes is go halfway there and then see how you and your hairstylist feel. The halfway point allows you movement both backwards or forwards. Normally the journey to the halfway point should enable both of you to know 100 per cent where you should go from there on. This process may take longer but results in fewer tears and less gnashing of teeth.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

FOR THOSE WHO JUST WON’T LISTEN

If I am not able to talk the clients round to my way of thinking and they are still demanding to go from black to blonde, I would always illustrate to the client the worst-case example of what might happen. Promise less, deliver more. In reducing expectations, we increase the feelgood factor. Beware of the hairdresser who claps their hands together in glee and attacks you with a load of bleach. It is highly probable that it will end in tears.

LET’S DO THE TIME WARP AGAIN

Changing your hairstyle is scary and, since we use our hair as a form of comfort, it can be downright frightening to think of cutting or colouring it. Sometimes hair goes hand-in-hand with fear. If someone looks like they are stuck in a time warp, I can pretty much guarantee that they are trying to stay attached to the period in their life when they were most happy. One of my classic examples of this would be a client whose natural hair is about 70 per cent white yet wants to cling onto the raven black locks of her youth. If you find yourself back in the salon every 10 days for a root touch-up, sweetheart - that is a rut! Switching it up to a lighter colour, would not only soften the look, but knock years off you, I promise. Plus, less time in the salon, means less money spent; win, win.

IF IT AIN’T BROKE, DON’T FIX IT

Sometimes you think you are stuck in a rut, when actually you have found your look. If so CONGRATS, stick with it and leave it the hell alone. Cindy Crawford, Gwyneth Paltrow and Nicole Scherzinger never stray from their signature style and there is a reason for that – it works.

WELCOME ABOARD

I would like to welcome Clare Sutherland to the team. Born and bred north of the border, she is a multitalented hair stylist with an infectious personality to boot. Clare’s colour work is particularly excellent, as you can see here on Society Marbella’s Creative Director, Constanza.

Before...

After

After spending the past five years working in Dubai, she got the five-year itch and decided it was time for a change. Not wanting to return to the Highlands and having grown rather fond of the sunshine, she decided that Marbella ticked all the boxes. Being used to the transient scene of Dubai is a real asset, let me tell you. A constantly changing clientele tends to hinder people who move here and are trying to put down roots, but that is Marbella through and through and you need to make it work for you in order to succeed here.

Ta-Ra Love.. . Jonathan

THE BEAUTY OF HAIR IS THAT IT CAN BE CHANGED AND GIVE YOU THAT LIFT BUT, REMEMBER GIRLS, IT’S A PAIR OF SCISSORS AND A TINT BRUSH, NOT A MAGIC WAND.

Celebratory cocktails at the Marbella Club We attended…

A wonderful cocktail party to celebrate the new year. It was hosted by Andrew Martin, Femont Galvin Designers and Vertigo, all top interior design firms on Marbella’s Golden Mile.

We enjoyed…

The fantastic ambience of this super street party, with entertainments also going on in each one of the host’s shops. Guests flitted from one designer to the other and then met up in the middle.

We loved…

The beautiful arrangement of canapés on a long table, which were not just good to look at, they were also really delicious. The liquid refreshments were superb and we loved the classic cars on display, as well as the DJs who seemed to find all the right tunes that the guests loved.

Congratulations big thank you to…and a

Andrew Martin, Femont Galvin and Vertigo as well as the Marbella Club Hotel for hosting such a wonderful party to inspire us for 2018.

explains

why

S

ome of you may have noticed billboards advertising a company called By Nok springing up around Marbella over the last year. In an area where we are used to seeing a proliferation of property advertising, it may appear that By Nok is just another developer offering high quality, modern residences. But, this

company is offering something unique on the coast – it is offering an investment opportunity as well as an exceptional product at 40% below the market price. Although the company may be relatively new to Marbella, it has 30 years of experience in the property market and is a partnership between Ajea Invest, a Norwegian investment fund and Bänsae Desarrollos of Málaga. Its workers are highly experienced and to date the group has developed more than 5,000 homes. But what exactly sets it apart from its competitors is the question to be answered.

Armando Gómez, CEO Bynok

As By Nok’s CEO, Armando Gómez told SOCIETY: "What differentiates By Nok from the others is that we have changed the way in which the promoters market

is administered.” In the usual scheme of things, a promoter hires a team of architects, buys land, hires a construction company, adds his profit margin and releases the product to the market. However, By Nok works with promoters in a different way. The promotion field is an incredibly risky one, and Armando pointed out that as most of the promoters on the Costa del Sol are not locals, their risk is reduced when they work with people who have substantial experience of the local market and its architects, construction companies and suppliers. They also need expertise in buying land in Spain, and for this a team of lawyers is required, plus architects and engineers. All this represents time and money prior to any final investment decision.

What By Nok offers the promoters is all of this preparatory diligence, free of charge and without any

binding commitment: the land study is free, plus all the legal work and market study is free. This saves the client a lot of time and their decision-making is made easier.

"ALL OUR CLIENTS HAVE TRUSTED US SO MUCH THAT THEY GAVE US 100% OF THE INVESTMENT. ”

74

Keep it Real

As a result, By Nok’s business has grown rapidly and in September 2017 the firm made the decision to be their own promoters and to handle every stage of each project through to handing the keys to the client. They also, very innovatively, set up a mini hedge fund for their investors and introduced advantageous pricing that is always 30%-40% below market price. Effectively, this sidelines other promoters who can’t compete with this level of discount. Armando said, “We've destroyed the market. You could compare it with the effect of Easyjet or Ryanair on the air travel market, although By Nok’s products are always of the highest quality and that’s the difference.”

By Nok’s Black Saturday Armando demonstrated just how fast By Nok’s investors respond to new projects by showing us what they have called ‘By Nok’s Black Saturday’. During six minutes on one Saturday afternoon they sold investment in 100 villas in Boladilla Resort via a Whatsapp group, showing the sensational level of interest, and most importantly confidence, in the By Nok product. Two weeks later they launched the project.

How do they do it? They send their “privileged partners” / group of investors a message along with every detail of the whole project. The properties were offered at €255,000, whilst competing promoters priced the same properties at €600,000. This represented By Nok’s absolute cost, but with investors financing them they were also able to keep 100 properties in the project to sell next year. As Armando told us, “By Nok offers the best product in the best zone for the best price.”

DURING SIX MINUTES ON ONE SATURDAY AFTERNOON THEY SOLD INVESTMENT IN 100 VILLAS IN BOLADILLA RESORT A Top 10 promoter in Spain

1 on the Costa del Sol. Currently the firm is building 162 villas with incredible sea views next to golf courses on the coast. Remarkably, they have already sold 50% of the first half of the project, even though it launched on 23rd December, during the busy holiday season. Armando explained the speed at which they are able to work: “We have a financing option that only requires a 30% deposit, and By Nok finances the rest. This yields a yearly 25% profit margin, because of By Nok’s input. And you get to keep your asset. If the development doesn’t go through, all the money is returned. This hugely reduces risk for investors and therefore there are fewer returns to investors. Do you know how many have asked for a return? None. Not a single one. And this has surprised us immensely. All our clients have trusted us so much that they gave us 100% of the investment.” By Nok has also been profitable since its first year of operation on the Costa

del Sol and has never needed to add capital. It has also paid dividends since year one. Word about By Nok has spread quickly and as a result the firm is planning to work with smaller investors in 2018. This will allow the newcomers to invest in assets directly and they will receive a monthly report updating them on the progress of the property’s construction. As Armando explained, an individual wanting to build his or her own house would never be able to complete the project for the same price as By

76

Nok. Furthermore, By Nok also provides investors with bank guarantees, which means that the firm takes on the risk. This is in sharp contrast with typical investment funds that are only liquid when the property is sold. And, the prices are higher. With By Nok, each investor has his or her own property, not a fraction of an asset shared with others. Once the house is completed, the investor is free to do whatever they want with it.

Keep it Real

The importance of quality By Nok is committed to sourcing the best locations and using top quality materials. And, most importantly for the firm, it consistently outperforms its competitors on every point. Armando explained that because of this attention to quality, the construction is not where the money is made. Instead they focus on the resale market. By Nok’s mission is to be the best promoter in the history of the Spanish property market and its rapid growth reflects the firm’s ambitions. Its employees are paid double the salaries of other comparable businesses in the sector and it attracts experienced staff, none of which have left voluntarily since the business launched. Armando told us, “It is also a very demanding environment and we expect a lot from our staff in terms of innovation, but our investment in our staff pays off and we have a team that always pulls together.”

The future is By Nok In 2018, By Nok is offering an investment fund with a 100% guarantee. It has strict requirements for investors and doesn’t accept individuals who are considered ‘players’ in the market, because gambling is not part of By Nok’s ethos. It also plans to build two to three thousand houses annually. Of course, not all of these will be on the coast, because as Armando conceded, there aren’t enough plots left to satisfy the demands for building luxury villas, which need all the elements of exclusivity, including zone, direction and access to amenities. Therefore, this year they will only build half as many properties in this area as they did last year. But, Armando is confident that they will remain the leading promoter on the Costa del Sol. They also stared By Nok Partners last year and have 20 – 30 new real estate agents joining every week. The agents receive

BY NOK’S MISSION IS TO BE THE BEST PROMOTER IN THE HISTORY OF THE SPANISH PROPERTY MARKET AND ITS RAPID GROWTH REFLECTS THE FIRM’S AMBITIONS.

double the usual commission for selling By Nok products, which is a win-win for everyone.

This reflects By Nok’s attitude to making money. Armando said, “We want everyone to make money and have job satisfaction. We may not make as much money as competitors, but our model keeps things moving and the economy going. We are not greedy and it isn’t our objective to be millionaires. The Gracious Life

in Guadalmina

Loma de Casasola is a residential project of six luxurious villas in a secure, gated community designed by renowned architect Juan Antonio Fernandez. This local architect is also the creator of the new boulevard in San Pedro de Alcรกntara, which has won a national design award. His inspiration is the traditional Andalusian house, re-imagined in a modern style that is superbly bright, with large open spaces, a cosy environment and a pragmatic floor plan.

80

T

he company chose the Guadalmina Baja area, because it has been considered one of the most luxurious and high class residential locations for many years. Not only is it within walking distance of the beach, it is just a few minutes away from Puerto BanĂşs and San Pedro de AlcĂĄntara, and very close to the best international schools. The golfers will be also happy to know that the golf course in Guadalmina

Baja, which is one of the most prestigious in the Costa del Sol, is just 200 metres away. The villas face southeast and are only 700 metres away from the sea, and this urbanisation offers a calm and green environment, plus magnificent and open views. Garage space for two to three cars is included and the terraces are large and perfect for outdoor living and entertainment.

LOMA DE CASASOLA CAN PROVIDE AND TAKE CARE OF THE INTERIOR DESIGN, FOLLOWING THE REQUESTS OF THE CLIENT, AND IT IS COMPLETELY POSSIBLE TO MAKE CHANGES DURING THE DESIGN PROCESS.

In the Loma de Casasola villas you will find quality in every aspect; from the building construction to the final details and finishings. Plus, they have chosen the best brands in the market to guarantee the highest quality: Shucco for the aluminium carpentry with Planistar One (special glasses for thermic and lighting control); Daikin for the air conditioning and underfloor heating; Deltaligh lighting; Bulthaup & Gagenau kitchen; Porcelanosa & Marazzi flooring; Thyssenkrupp elevator and a long list full of renowned brands that give the villas a truly exclusive status. The buyer can receive their house in a completely ready to move in. state. There is a choice of four or five bedroom villas, with matching number of bathrooms, and the plot sizes range from 805m2 to 1025m2. The living space is 501581m2 and terraces are 292 -327m2. personalise this very important space. In the bathrooms it is the same: the client can participate in the design of the furniture, tiling style, sanitary ware and taps. In effect, everything is offered to make the house absolutely perfect for its owner. Each villa also has a 12.4 metre swimming pool that has been designed to complement the architectural style of the house with its clean and modern aesthetic. Heating for the pool comes pre-installed, which means it can be used all year round. Furthermore, each house has a charming garden with natural grass, trees and flowers. An automatic irrigation system is installed and as the community is small, there will be a gardener who will take care of all the gardens, so the maintenance is minimal. Essentially, these houses have a universal appeal, and for those who have an eye for something special in architecture, they will tick all the boxes. For example, the large overhangs, perfect shadows, dimensions and scale are an aesthetic delight. The quality of every aspect of the project is outstanding and Loma de Casasola has really pushed the envelope to deliver a special environment. Most of all, these are houses that are designed to be lived in. The floor plan has created a series of spaces where every single corner has some use. There is also plenty of storage space, something that is so often lacking in properties on the coast. With its green zones, low community charges and 24hour security, this is one of the highest quality developments available at a real ‘value for money’ price. There can be few other luxury properties available that are located in such a privileged area – don’t miss this opportunity to live graciously in Guadalmina. lomadecasasola.com

Rita van Dijk, Owner of VILLA 25

By Rita van Dijk, Owner of VILLA 25 Each year, the design world comes together at the industry’s mecca for interior design, Maison & Objet held twice annually in Paris.

T

his is the opportunity to stay abreast of international design trends and a veritable who’s who in the world of interior design can be found roaming the stands in search of the newest, latest and next big thing. Comprising eight vast halls with over 3500 exhibitors from all over the world, it’s safe to say if it isn’t at M&O, it doesn’t exist. This year’s M&O didn’t disappoint and judging from the world’s leading brands, 2018 design trends are all about big, bold and colourful.

From home accessories to textiles, flooring to lighting, wall art to furnishings, today’s design is all about an aesthetic that is vivacious and striking. Everywhere we looked, our eyes were treated to luscious emerald greens, exotic tapestries and gold and brass accents. The deepest and richest hues reigned supreme and tropical wallcoverings and overstated objets d’art invited us into the most incredible spaces where the safety of our monochromatic worlds was rudely awakened and flipped on its head. From stand to stand, the comforts of a decade spent in silver, white and taupe were all pulled into question and

88

the overriding feeling was to rush home and inject colour and life into our bland existence. Marbleised finishes, metallic details, oversized lighting and bold colours are where design is taking us this year and it’s all so exciting and new. Does this mean it’s time to throw out that cream sofa? Not necessarily, but it may be time to stop being afraid to mix things up a little with some colourful cushions, fabrics and wall coverings. 2018 is no longer about being matchymatchy so don’t be shy to update your look with palm-tree inspired cushions and an exotic animal statue. If your space isn’t making a statement, it’s stuck in a design rut.

IF YOUR SPACE ISN’T MAKING A STATEMENT, IT’S STUCK IN A DESIGN RUT.

Nature’s influences also played a huge role in this year’s design trends and we’re seeing live walls and live-edged tables featuring heavily in spatial design this year. Tropical elements, real or artificial, are encouraged and if you’re not brave enough to go for a live-edge dining table, then consider a side or occasional table like these beauties from Seiva in Portugal.

As tempting as the familiar can be, a little rock star glam never hurt anybody and these metallic horsehair rugs from Ebru in the Netherlands promise to bring the party and a bit of unique chic to any space. And why stop at the floor? Decorating your walls is the quickest and best way to ensure your space is unique without the clutter. Always at the forefront of curating wall art that is edgy and different, Cobra Art showcased a collection that embraced this year’s bold and daring theme. From bedazzled animal skulls to designer fire extinguishers, the Netherlands’ leading house of art set trends and broke boundaries at this year’s show. The Dutch truly trailblazed at this year’s show but Belgium, Spain, Portugal and Turkey didn’t disappoint in any way and remained firm show favourites, promoting and embracing this year’s boldness and sumptuous palettes with a product offering that wowed at every turn.

But it wouldn’t be Maison & Objet and it wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t mention the king of all design brands, Eichholtz. Never one to disappoint, the Dutch powerhouse is celebrating 25 years of creating and moulding design and its ‘stand’ comprised a selection of meticulously designed vignettes that encompassed the World of Eichholtz. Renowned for creating a mini department store at the show each year, the Eichholtz selection of stands commandeer a big chunk of Hall 3, complete with a full-fledged café in the centre. As you wander from room to

room, you are transported into a lush world of extravagance that has clearly influenced this year’s trends in a major way and, if you were ticking off trends on a list, you will find them all here: Big, Bold, Gold, Colourful, Vibrant and Avant-garde. It was all here at Eichholtz and it was what Maison & Objet was all about this year.

TORQUE TALK

THE LATEST M5 SETS A NEW CLASS BENCHMARK

D

espite being in the industry 35 years, my list of truly memorable cars, ones that I would instantly place in my mythical garage, is not actually that long. Not one to be unduly wowed by supercars for their own sake, I look for good dynamic balance as well as beauty in any car. One car that easily made my short list in 1987 was the (E28) BMW M5. Powered by a 286 hp version of the 3.5-litre 24-valve twin-cam straight six from the M1 supercar, the original M5’s sweet, high revving motor had guts all the way through its rev band. And so long as you took the stock alloy wheels shod with Pirelli P7s and not the nasty Michelin TRX wheel and tyre option its impressive straight-line speed was matched by an agile and nicely balanced chassis. Fast-forward 30 years to Portimao circuit in the Algarve, and I am once again behind the wheel of an E28 M5, this time from BMW’s Classic collection, on the occasion of the latest M5 launch. Even though the simple analogue cockpit looks and feels ‘classic’ for want of a better description, I feel instantly at home. The period BMW ergonomic virtues of having

instruments and controls aligned with the drivers’ line of sight and touch has endured the test of time. Out on the road, the big six under the bonnet of this 124,000 km example feels hale and hearty, and revs cleanly and strongly through the gears. In period form, the air conditioning is quite effective but the blower is very vocal, reminding me just how far manufacturers have come in terms of making cars quieter and more efficient. Above all, my re-acquaintance with the first generation M5 served to remind me why I loved the car so much back then. It also underlined the fact that any well-balanced machine should be able to maintain this impression, even years down the line. Sadly, succeeding generations of M5 did not have the same draw for me. Growing bigger and heavier is not a good thing, and the E34, E39 and the E60 M5 failed to win a place in either my heart or my mythical garage. In an environment where manufacturers usually improve efficiency of their new models by shedding excess fat, the fifth

105

TORQUE TALK

IT FELT LIKE ONE OF THOSE EARLY FORCE FEEDBACK SET-UPS FOR PLAYSTATION THAT GAVE YOU LOTS OF RESISTANCE, BUT NO FEELING OF BEING CONNECTED TO ANYTHING. generation M5 (F10) of 2011 shocked enthusiasts by debuting with 90 kg more dead weight than its V10-engined predecessor. With tightening emissions standards looming BMW chose a 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 to succeed the V10, and uniquely placed those turbochargers inside the Vee in what they term a ‘hot side inside’ configuration. With 560hp and 680 Nm of torque, the S63 T2 motor made for the most powerful M5 ever, but at 1,945 kg, it was also the heaviest.

106

Although based on the latest G30 5-Series, the new M5 that goes on sale in spring 2018 is internally designated F90. Go figure. Power comes from the heavily revised S63 T4 version of the V8 bi-turbo good for 600 hp and 750 Nm of torque. This is dispensed to all four wheels through a new ZF eight-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox that replaces the seven-speed Getrag dual-clutch gearbox used before. BMW realised at the start of the F90 M5’s development that they would have to use every trick in the book to stay competitive

with forthcoming rival super saloons from Mercedes-AMG and Audi. Since they had already used all-wheeldrive to good effect in the M550d, an M fettled version of BMW’s xDrive system was the logical missing link in the M5 chain. The good news is that despite the extra weight of the front differential and two driveshafts the engineers managed to shave around 40 kg off the kerb weight of the outgoing F10 model. Apart from its weight, another serious bugbear of the F10 M5 was the weight and feel of its hydraulic power steering, which became unnaturally heavy and lacking in feedback in its Sport setting. It felt like one of those early force feedback set-ups for PlayStation that gave you lots of resistance, but no feeling of being connected to anything.

TORQUE TALK

crisper looking than the more organically styled E63 AMG, which also features 4WD as standard. The RS6 derivative of the forthcoming new Audi A6 is still some way off, so for now the new M5 is safe from an Ingolstadt challenge, which will once again likely be only made in its iconic Avant form. While it may appear superficially similar to its predecessor the sixth-generation M5 is in fact an all-new car under the skin. Based on the new platform that BMW terms their CLAR (Cluster Architecture) structure, this latest M5 has a lighter and more rigid monocoque, making it a potentially more stable platform for its M specific suspension.

Thankfully the engineers have got it right this time round and the EPS (Electric Power Steering) works a treat both in its normal setting on the road, and when all systems are on full alert on track. In design terms, BMW has always applied a mandate of one generation of styling revolution followed by one of evolution. This has not changed, but the differences between the similarly proportioned F10 and F90 generation 5-Series models are subtle enough that non-enthusiasts would struggle to identify them as they drive past. The same goes for their M5 derivatives, whose lights, grilles and bumpers are the real giveaways to car enthusiasts. However, there is no getting away from the fact that the latest M5 is a handsome car in the classical sense. It is arguably

Although the fact is well disguised by its fine proportions, the new M5 is larger all round. It has grown 55 mm to 4,965 mm, width is increased by 12mm to 1,903 mm, and it is also 16mm taller at 1,473 mm. The weight reduction despite these larger dimensions and the addition of xDrive is thus commendable, and is helped by the use of lightweight high strength steels in critical areas, an aluminium bonnet, carbon-fibre roof panel, lightweight exhaust system and a Lithium-ion battery in the boot, which incidentally has a 530 litre volume. With less weight to carry, more power and torque, and the means to apply it to the tarmac effectively in all weather conditions, the new M5 is at last a complete high performance saloon, at least on paper. What has not changed is the phenomenal bi-turbo V8. Billed as the fastest and most powerful M5 ever, the new car blasts to 62mph in 3.4 seconds and on to an electronically limited 250 top speed. This becomes 306 km/h if you tick the box for the Driver’s Package option. Dubbed M xDrive, the 4WD system is essentially a marriage of BMW’s xDrive hardware with the Active M differential.

107

TORQUE TALK

The M engineers developed a proprietary software application to control these components in such a way that traction and balance are optimised for conditions. It can even send power to only the front or rear wheels if required. Naturally, the M5’s handling bias is rear-wheel-drive but the driven front wheels impart greater stability and safety at speed as well as on low friction surfaces. The M5 has always had a fine reputation as a good drift car, so trackday junkies will obviously question the impact of M xDrive on their ability to drive whilst looking through the side window. The good news is that M

Dynamic mode sends 100% of the power to the rear wheels to satisfy these hard-core drivers. Other modes are 4WD, 4WD Sport, 2WD, and as usual if you switch off the traction control you are on your own. Clarity is always a virtue and BMW has now made loosening of the electronic nanny easier and more transparent with the adoption of red painted MDM1 and MDM2 levers on the steering wheel. These two stages increase the amount of oversteer a skilled driver can adopt on track, the latter making full use of the M Differential whether in four or two-wheel-

NATURALLY, THE M5’S HANDLING BIAS IS REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE BUT THE DRIVEN FRONT WHEELS IMPART GREATER STABILITY AND SAFETY AT SPEED AS WELL AS ON LOW FRICTION SURFACES. 109

THE COMPLIANT SUSPENSION AND LOW CABIN NOISE ON A LIGHT THROTTLE MEAN THAT THE M5 COMFORTABLY SETTLES INTO THE ROLE OF COSSETTING LONG DISTANCE CRUISER. drive. MDM1 is activated with one push of the button; the selection of MDM2 requires one push to activate, and a second to confirm your intentions. Disabling the traction control system and other dynamic driver aids is achieved by pushing a sand alone button on the centre console, while the selection of rear-wheel-drive only is more complex and requires delving into the on-screen menu. With limited track time at Estoril, I set up my Drift Ghost video camera on the top of the front windscreen and went for half a dozen laps behind BMW works driver and 2011 DTM Champion, Martin Tomczyk. MDM2 mode allows you to hang the tail out with the responsive new electric power steering working perfectly in synch with the chassis, and this made it easy to follow Martin around the familiar bends of Estoril on the bald limit. Choreographing Martin’s drifting M5 Pace Car meant power sliding my own car just as a fighter pilot sideslips to keep his guns on an enemy plane. Using my right foot more than the steering to adjust my line I was able to keep the camera centred on Martin’s car, in the process proving just how instinctive and user friendly the new M5’s handling is. The uprated engine and lower weight gives the car bombastic performance,

110

and it eats tarmac between the bends with a voracious appetite. The M xDrive provides the traction to slingshot the car out of bends in a way alien to a rear drive only M5, and also makes it more stable in cross winds at high speed. The counterpoint when you dial things back on the street is a supple secondary ride for a sporting sedan, and a civilised drivetrain that provides excellent tractability and seamless gearshifts when the auto box is left to its own devices. On the highway, the compliant suspension and low cabin noise on a light throttle mean that the M5 comfortably settles into the role of cossetting long distance cruiser. BMW were not kidding when they told us that the new M5 is really two cars in one. When news that the new M5 was to have all-wheel-drive got out the enthusiast community was instantly divided. One camp feared that it would lose its driving purity, while the other applauded the fact that they would be able to deploy the rumoured 600 hp much more effectively. A super saloon with all-weather capability that can still be drifted in either two or all-wheel-drive thanks to its clever electronics, the new BMW M5 is everything its flawed predecessor was not and then some. Far from eroding the pure driving experience, BMW M’s clever interpretation of xDrive has actually enhanced it.

Despite the failure of the “Invincible” Armada, Spain continued to control the seas for decades, before passing such power to the Dutch, who finally lost it in the titanic clash between England and France. The “defeat” of the Spanish Armada, (caused by the worst September storms of the century), contrary to what is known (or used to be known) by every patriotic English schoolboy (and girl – let us be politically correct!) was merely one minor incident in the long bitter war that embroiled the whole of Europe between 1580 and 1604. In effect, this first “world war” was waged in Europe, Panama, the Caribbean, the Atlantic and the Pacific. Spain emerged victorious, still more than capable of transporting the riches of the Americas to its warehouses in Seville, whilst England was increasingly plunged into debt and disarray, with its meagre resources sapped by a draining guerrilla war in Ireland. The situation was immeasurably worsened by the debacle which occurred in 1589 when an English “Armada” was soundly thrashed by the still powerful Spanish navy. They don’t teach this in school! As most of the ships of the Spanish Armada limped back to Spain, the English sensed an opportunity. They reckoned that the fleet would need time for refitting and repair. Sir Francis Walsingham’s intelligence service discovered that this would take

112

place in Santander and San Sebastian, to which ports the Armada had been driven by the gales. There was a lack of workmen, not enough sailors to man them adequately, and the soldiers had been despatched inland to winter quarters. Sir Francis Walsingham sensed blood. The costs of the operation against the Spanish Armada had nearly drained the royal treasury. A horrific outbreak of disease had claimed hundreds of lives amongst the English sailors. The troops had not been paid in months. The prospect of seizing the Spanish treasure fleets thus emerged alongside what was undoubtedly the main aim of Sir Francis’s intention; the total destruction of Spanish naval forces.

v

But herein lay the problem. Had the Armada managed to make port in La Coruña or Lisbon, as was originally intended, the English fleet would have an easier task in destroying the Spanish ships before sailing to the Azores to intercept the treasure fleet. Santander and San Sebastian both lay deep to the east on Spain’s northern front facing the Bay of Biscay. The prevailing winds from the west meant that the English would have to sail against the wind round the north-west coast of Spain to reach the Azores. This delay would give the Spanish ample time to mount defences in Portugal (at the time a Spanish possession) from which they could thwart any attempt against the islands. The English Armada was assembled in Plymouth, beginning in February 1589. Contrary winds, the failure of supplies, and personal infighting and intrigue (Spanish treasure ships were involved!) delayed its departure, which afforded King Philip crucial time to prepare. On April 5th, impatient at the delay, Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, stole away on the Swiftsure to mount a quixotic attack on the shores of Portugal. This reinforced Queen Elizabeth’s distrust of her commanders, Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Norris, whom she

believed to have intentions against Spanish silver rather than against Spanish galleons. Drake and Norris were hemmed in for two more weeks by contrary winds before being able to set sail, and the Spanish were alerted by Essex. When they finally set sail, they sighted the Spanish shores outside La Coruña. This harbour contained only a few rotting hulks, and only one Spanish warship. Queen Elizabeth had supplied the fleet with an ample supply of siege trains, which she knew would be necessary to overcome the defences of walled cities. She failed, however, to supply the necessary artillery. This may have been a hint that only after the torching of the Spanish fleet, would she apply artillery for any attack on Lisbon and the Azores. Drake, probably realising this, was immensely irritated and made only a half-hearted attack on La Coruña. The lower city was taken, and in locating and appropriating stores, Drake’s landing party uncovered a vast bodega. As a result, when a tower in the wall of the upper city collapsed, the English were far too incapacitated to take advantage of the breach. The English troops then marched towards Lisbon. An outbreak of disease, coupled with a massive hangover, diminished the force considerably. Archduke Albert, King Philip’s nephew, withdrew his forces behind the walls of the city, and waited for the withdrawal of the

English which, he rightly surmised, would not be long in coming. He was right. Drake and Norris decided against a punitive expedition up the river Tagus on account of its fearsome defences. Meanwhile the English Armada, out at sea, was being battered by adverse winds and soon the ships had been driven at a considerable distance from the treasure shipping lanes, whilst the Spanish warships still at sea further damaged and harassed them. Ultimately, in June, the English Armada limped back to port in Plymouth. More than 10,000 men, the vast majority of the force, were killed or deserted. Shipping losses were fewer than the Spanish Armada, but the costs were staggering. Over £100,000 was lost; more than the cost of the Spanish Armada itself. Quite apart from which, the Spanish treasure fleet still delivered the goods, the Spanish navy remained intact, Portugal was still a Spanish possession, and Spain remained the dominant power in the Americas. Three times as much bullion was now shipped to Spain, partly as a result of a clever convoy system introduced by King Philip himself using his strengthened naval forces. And in 1595 a large part of Cornwall was set alight by a small Spanish force under Don Carlos de Amesquita, who celebrated Mass on Protestant English soil, before serenely sailing home.

THE ENGLISH TROOPS THEN MARCHED TOWARDS LISBON. AN OUTBREAK OF DISEASE, COUPLED WITH A MASSIVE HANGOVER, DIMINISHED THE FORCE CONSIDERABLY.

EAT YOURSELF

Healthy!

This early in the year the pull of the New Year Resolution is still strong and, for many, the challenge of becoming a fitter, healthier, more finely toned individual still exerts a powerful influence. Of course, life on the Coast can be a relentlessly social experience but – if your circle of friends like to eat out as much as possible – never fear, because Marbella and its environs contains a range of wonderfully healthy places to enjoy fantastic food without ruining your plans for a new you.

Is there anyone, anywhere who doesn’t adore Thai food? If you have been a bit slow in coming to the party, then you really should start your education at Top Thai. Not only are there two branches from which to choose (one in Centro Plaza, Nueva Andalucía and the other in Estepona’s Laguna Village), these friendly establishments offer some of the finest Asian food on the Coast. Thai food is extremely healthy and Top Thai’s extensive menu includes all the classic dishes – plus a few more with which you may be less familiar. If your idea of heaven is to enjoy the freshest ingredients cooked and served within seconds of cooking, then this is most definitely for you. While some of the dishes display a touch of sophistication - for instance the Pla Nueng See Ew (Steamed Sea Bass served with Soy Sauce, Ginger and Coriander) and the Ped Pakking (Crispy Duck with Pancakes and Special Thai Sauce) – but this popular restaurant has really earned its name with its five-star versions of Thai street-food. Don’t miss the chance to sample the Priew Wahn (Thai style Deep Fried Chicken, Prawns or Duck with Sweet and Sour Sauce, Pineapple, Paprika and Onions), Phad Prik Khing (Stir-fried Chicken, Beef or Prawns with Vegetables and Red Curry Paste) or Phad Phong Kraree (Stir-fried Chicken, Prawns or Squid with Yellow Curry and Vegetables). These fabulous dishes bring a tasty and authenticity to our coastal cuisine and (even better news!) they are as healthy as they are packed with flavour. We are all excited about the possibilities of this brand-new concept in fresh-thinking gastronomy, due to open in Puerto Banús shortly. The idea of project developer, Aguilene Benicio McNab, Breathe represents a new generation of eating places dedicated to producing and serving the finest and freshest ingredients. Set for completion this summer, Breathe will support local food producers with its determination to cut down on the air miles of the dishes served and the plan is for the restaurant to maintain its own large-scale vegetable garden. Laid out over three floors, Breathe is a project that has been turning heads even in the building stages. The completed premises will contain three underground levels for parking, the ground floor will be a cafeteria, the first floor will house the main restaurant plus a large outdoor garden, while the top level will feature a sky bar. In short, it already looks set to be the best place in the Marbella area to arrange a meetup with friends and colleagues, whether this is for a morning coffee, a lavish lunch or dinner or a cocktail when the sun sets and the heat of the day dissipates. The garden is being designed as a feature not only to attract diners, but as a way of spreading the founders’ message that it is possible to produce food with maximum flavour and a minimum carbon footprint. Taking a leaf out of urban planners’ books, Breathe will also include a hanging garden, large trees and multiple vertical gardens. To gain the best results, the soil contains hydro-fertilisers that use less water than the conventional variety. The team will maximise the use of any rainfall – which will be captured and stored in an underground tank - and the water by-products created by the reverse osmosis plant. We are especially excited about the opening of Breathe and predict that it will be one of the key places to dine when it opens later in the year. With an east-west aspect it will also take advantage of natural breezes, which will cut the need for air-conditioning. However, the building will also contain a geothermal plant to cool the air during the summer and heat it throughout the cooler winter months. This method has proved to be both energy efficient and sustainable. The Breathe team promises that water will also be a big feature at the new venue, with various installations which will be illuminated with LED lights when the sun goes down. This is more than just a great place to eat – it will be a wonderful place to meet friends and socialise in what is one of the Coast’s most sociable areas. If you want to eat great food in an environment which is unlike anything else that Marbella currently has to offer, then you really must book a date in your diary to visit this soon-tobe-opened restaurant – but be sure to book a table first. www.breathe.life

The concept behind Manuka is to serve food as close as possible to how nature offers it. There can be a stigma associated with healthy food; it’s often labelled as boring and tasteless, so the team’s goal is to show you that it is quite the opposite - eating naturally can be delicious and increase your state of well-being! Manuka’s five core beliefs on which its menu is based are:

INCREASED PLANT BASED AND VEGETARIAN MEALS

These dishes contain the largest amounts of vitamins, nutrients, enzymes and alkalizing effects on the body as well as preventing suffering to all other life forms on our planet. Doesn’t it feel good to know after your meal that you have not contributed to the suffering of animals on the slaughter chain - and that you have replenished your body with all the nutrients it needs? With access to so many vegetarian substitutes, thanks to modern production techniques, we should minimize our consumption of animal products. Being so many on this planet the resulting carbon footprint and animal suffering has grown out of proportion. So why not try serving your breakfast granola with coconut yogurt instead?

DON’T FORGET YOUR OMEGA 3S!

Omega 3s are essential fatty acids that are incredibly important to our health, due to their anti-inflammatory properties. Omega-3 deficiency is increasingly common due to the excess consumption of Omega 6 found in modern day diets. Foods high in Omega 6 fatty acids include certain vegetable oils, salad dressings, fast foods, cookies and cakes, processed meat products etc. The Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio controls inflammation in the body

116

and the ideal ratio is 3:1. However, analysing modern day diets reveals that the average is about 15:1! As this ratio becomes imbalanced it causes systemic inflammation throughout the body leading to chronic and autoimmune disease. Hemp seeds, for example, are a great source of Omega 3 (and include the perfect ratio) and Manuka uses these seeds in many of its dishes, so next time you are nearby why not drop in for a salted caramel smoothie, which is full of these creamy seeds?

MAKE IT GLUTEN FREE!

Gluten is a protein in wheat, barley, and rye that can cause bloating and health problems in people who are intolerant to it. Gluten intolerance has risen in the last decade and medical researchers are still trying to determine the cause of this ‘epidemic’. Among the results there is evidence that the use of plastics and diatomaceous earth—an abrasive powder applied to flour containers as an insecticide - is binding to the gluten and triggering an allergic response in the body. Also, the GMO alteration of wheat to create stronger crops has modified the gluten strands, causing the human body to fail to recognise them. There is also the general increase of gluten intake due to its high concentration in processed foods prevalent in our diets, therefore the Manuka team tries to avoid gluten wherever it can.

DAIRY FREE

It is estimated that eight out of 10 people are intolerant to dairy products, due to the lack of the enzyme needed to break down lactose. This intolerance can lead to a series of health problems, from general discomfort to allergies, bloating, etc. One interesting fact is if consuming dairy it is better to opt for goat’s or sheep’s milk, as it does not contain the same amount of

growth factors found in cow’s milk, which interfere with human hormones. In a year a baby cow needs to put on about 300 kg from the moment it is born, which requires a serious amount of growth hormones. This is why dairy is so often linked to obesity, and general proliferation of cells, whether they be mucus cells, cancer cells etc. - not to mention the use of antibiotics in today’s cow milk industry. This is why Manuka mainly uses goats’ and sheep’s milk and minimises the employment of cow milk products.

HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN CONTENT

High Protein proteins are essential for life and supplying the body with the essential amino acids to function properly. Proteins are not stored as fat in the body and therefore contribute to weight loss. They also help you feel satiated after eating and don’t create blood sugar highs and lows that lead to cravings and moodiness. The quality of proteins we eat is also very important as too much animal product can lead to acidity in the body. Luckily there are many kinds of delicious plant-based foods that provide great proteins such as quinoa, black beans, nuts, eggs etc. MANUKA CENTRO: CC La Cañada, Marbella. WHAT'S NEWS CONTAINER OF HOPE Unrest in the DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Burundi over the past 20 years has led to periodic moments of unthinkable violence which has caused thousands of women and children to flee their country, to become refugees and seek a safe haven in Tanzania. Two decades of violence has resulted in the forming of the third largest refugee camp on the globe called Nyarugusu. Situated just south of the Burundian border, Nyarugusu refugee camp is home to some 130,000 refugees, many of them women and children. In June 2017, Collective Calling NGO, which is a local charity here on the coast that also supports the local homeless community, was granted access to the camp. They found thousands of children with disabilities who were not being cared for and had very little educational resources. Collective Calling has since then formed a partnership with a local Tanzanian NGO and is working in collaboration towards the empowerment of those children with disabilities.

Collective Calling was formed to create a collective of compassionate individuals and entities who have had a calling to help those in need, and to work together. It seems that the calling across the Costa del Sol is growing greater and greater. Over the Christmas period, Iceland in Puerto Banus supported Collective Calling by allowing their volunteers, with the help from students from Aloha College, to pack bags in exchange for a charitable donation by their customers and they managed to raise an incredible 1,500€ in only six days. The creation of a “Container of Hope” campaign, which saw schools, churches, local businesses and individuals working together, collected vital aid to be sent to the camp via a 20ft container. This will carry a whopping 1,300 bags

packed full of school items kindly donated by parents of students from Sunny View school, Colegio Atalaya, British International School of Marbella and Marbella Montessori School, and sponsored by IBEX Insurance, Mr Tom Card, Kids Parties Spain, Experience Group Spain, Yoga Bears and Petra Flow Yoga to a team of Collective Calling volunteers on the ground and distributed to the most vulnerable of children. If you have had a calling to help those in need, please contact Collective Calling now, or if you would like to follow their work please visit their facebook page, Facebook.com/CollectiveCalling, Collectively, we are making a difference. collectivecalling.org

DRUMELIA LEADS REAL ESTATE BUSINESSES IN ACCEPTING BITCOIN With almost the entire world talking about cryptocurrencies, Sergey Sinichkin, the owner and director of Drumelia has leapt into action alongside the owner of a Villa in La Alqueria in Benahavís and they are selling it for 183,54 Bitcoins. The actual figure will vary as Bitcoin’s valuation fluctuates daily. The development is worth €2,490 million. Sergey Sinichkin said:” Those who accept the payment of a property in Bitcoins are investors in cryptocurrencies. They trust Bitcoin will be consolidated and that it´s a safe payment method. Actually, in practice, it’s like any other currency.” Many large companies are accepting Bitcoins as a legitimate payment method. Microsoft followed by WordPress, Expedia, Destinia travel agency and well- known restaurant chains such as Subway and Starbucks have already incorporated Bitcoin. Every day more and more companies are added to this list, even El Corte Inglés will join it soon. Marbella already has three Bitcoin ATMs, one of them in the Centro Cristamar, and its likely that we see more at La Cañada and Málaga airport in the near future. We will wait to see how many more real estate companies here start accepting cryptocurrency as payments for property, but with it being a growing trend in property transactions globally, it seems certain we’ll see the BTC logo on more real estate websites.
