PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Micro Marbella
W
ith much talk of a second lockdown looming and tighter restrictions seeming a certainty, I nevertheless find solace that living in this glorious city, with its much-admired microclimate, inhabited by an ever-increasing, eclectic mix of nationalities, we have somehow contrived to create our own microeconomy. Whilst almost all businesses are faced with uncertainty, our community spirit still shines bright and our collective creativity ensures we are largely still able to function in a way many other cities would be envious of. For years to come, we’ll be proud of the way we stood together along this glorious stretch of sea and sand, and even though we’ll soon welcome the return to normality, long may our bullish positivity continue.

A GROWING
INFLUENCE This month we talk to our cover star, Marbella born model and influencer,
Salman Yousra.

I first started modelling…
almost by chance. I believe the things you don’t search for are the ones that are truly meant to be. Destiny granted me with an opportunity, and I took it. I began working as a model for upcoming brand Hawkers. Soon after that with Pepe Jeans London and Levi, followed by some of the biggest designers in Spain; Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Roberto Verino and Adolfo Domínguez. I then took my career to Milan, with Dsquared2’s designers Dean and Dan as well as Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana.
Currently I find myself working… mostly in Paris, New York,
Milan, London, Madrid and Barcelona. I love working and my job allows me to meet new people, travel and above all, enrich myself with different cultures and world outlooks. I’d love to carry on working in this industry but mostly to grow professionally and as a person. I’m constantly working on myself, to be the best version possible.
Starting in the industry you need to… have your ideas very
clear in your head. Know who you are, where you came from and where you’re heading. This will guide you and direct you to where you would like to end up. These things have been invaluable helping me to avoid getting lost along the way.
Social media provides…
an excellent platform for selfexpression and makes it accessible to the entire world. Some people are confused because they believe everything they see and hear, but they are mistaken. Behind a photograph or a video there is an immense amount of work. I have social media to thank for practically my entire career, but I also
had to sacrifice my privacy. Like everything, there are good and bad aspects.
“Marbella continues to be a tourist landmark. I travel extensively and there is no place to live quite like Marbella.”
At the moment… I’m involved in many projects although I can´t yet disclose them. But I can give you a clue: it has to do with film, and it’s a very exciting project because it’s very personal to me. I’m also developing my own brand, and you will see it exhibited very soon. And then there are current fashion projects which unfortunately I cannot undertake due to the Covid-19 situation. I am inspired by… so many people it would be hard to choose one in particular, but I love people that are spontaneous, down to earth and with a unique personal essence. When I am not working…
I love to be surrounded by my friends and family, I am a family person. I may take a stroll and try to disconnect; I enjoy walking alone listening to music. In Marbella I have a construction company, Budaut Group, that keeps me quite busy when I’m here.
My favourite fashion brand is… Since I work in this industry it would be a sin to mention a specific brand. I do love the essence and history of Yves Saint Laurent and I have always been a fan of their brand. Their creative director, Anthony Vaccarello is doing a phenomenal job whilst adhering to the line and essence of the company.
A recent rewarding experience was… last year, during fashion week I was met by a group of fans with signs. It was a really wonderful experience having people in another country want to meet me and even wait for me to arrive, I felt very privileged.
A city I love is… Marrakech. You
are immersed with the energy of the city from the moment you arrive. I was staying in a hotel that was an oasis palace, and it gave this incredible aura of tranquillity. I love going there to disconnect and get some rest.
I’m a huge fan of…
the Renaissance, and Bosco and Joan Miró in particular. I enjoy going to the opera and theatre in general. History fascinates me. I’m often told I’m a premature adult.
Marbella is… the place where I
made my first steps and that watched me grow. Marbella continues to be a tourist landmark. I travel extensively and there is no place to live quite like Marbella. I fall in love with many places I travel to, but Marbella is my Marbella.
@salmanyousra
My top Instagram tip is…
be yourself, transmit your true essence so that you may reach someone that identifies with your feelings.

WHY VALENTINE’S DAY ome choose to dig deep and find ways to show love for their significant other on February 14th. Some think it is a ridiculous notion to be forced to show your feelings on a particular day of the year, and some simply don’t even bother with it. So, you see St. Valentine’s Day is exactly like Marmite - you either love it, hate it, or you don’t even entertain it. Whether you’re type one, two or three or you’ve created your own individual version of what Valentine’s means to you. The day will happen and there will be hearts, flowers and all hues of red and pink surrounding you wherever you go - if, indeed, we are permitted to leave our homes and shops and restaurants are actually open. So, based on this being the first falling within the pandemic, how will you spend your Valentine’s Day this year? The following are some ideas for those of you who either want to create a special moment for the one you love, or go ahead and practice some self-love and prepare these for yourself - showing number one you care is just as important! All of the following can be achieved living in a pandemic, restricted situation. (I sincerely hope this never has to be written about in this way again!)
You may not be able to take an overnight getaway, or visit a sumptuous spa but how about taking some time and making an effort to converting a space in the house into a romantic love-nest and showing your appreciation by thinking of all the little things that person would like to make them feel most comfortable, relaxed and loved. Scented candles, favourite blankets or pillows, a hot bath with some essential oils, soothing music, favourite wine, you get the picture? Get creative!
26
IS JUST LIKE MARMITE
What are their absolute favourite foods? They may not fit the bill at a classy restaurant and so quite often when we have an extravagant meal we aren’t actually eating what we would if we had the choice. Think, desert island foods what would that person of yours choose if stranded? Consider their top five treats and serve them up on a platter. It could be pizza, pistachios and peppermints it doesn’t matter, it is the fact that you thought about it and know their likes and dislikes that makes it special.
Take a hike, bike, stroll, jog or drive to one of the most beautiful nature spots in your area. Bring a blanket or some chairs and sit and absorb the surroundings. Go hug a tree if you really want to get close up and personal with Mother Nature! You could even bring a picnic, bottle of champagne or favourite drink. Sit and savour a moment and count some blessings, celebrate yourselves, and make a toast to another year filled with giving and receiving love.
Find a warm, comfortable, peaceful place to sit and meditate. Speak openly about your intentions, how you want to love and be loved and take ten to clear your mind of all other thoughts and ideas, focus on being present and only the intention set for the meditation. Play soothing music if it helps to keep you focussed and ward of distractions.
If you’re going to spend Valentine’s with a partner, how about practicing some couple’s yoga. There are all sorts of poses and flows that can be achieved together, YouTube has plenty to choose from. Be aware of your level and don’t try anything you’ve never tried before - we don’t want injuries here, just a calm, connected flow that will leave you feeling energised, centred and closer. The act of using each other within a practice can build on trust and intimacy as well as potentially be a lot of fun. Strengthen your bodies and your relationship all in one swoop, win win!
So this requires a partner or good friend but this can be so rewarding in terms of having fun doing something completely different and also building trust and foundations which serve to encourage a strong relationship. Basically you need to take turns to blindfold each other and carry out a task. The blindfolded person has to, with the un-blindfolded person’s help, put together a dish in the kitchen. Bake a cake, some bread, or some cupcakes, whatever it is it’s going to provide some laughs and an experience that won’t be easily forgotten. And of course you have to eat the finished product!
if you can’t be together for Valentine’s Day and that was your wish, there is always the internet. Thankfully in our day and age we have access to each other whether we are next door or in a different time zone. Arranging a zoom call to reconnect can make all the difference, take time to think of some positive things to say to each other, maybe list their most positive attributes and say what they mean to you, lift each other’s spirits and leave each other feeling loved, acknowledged and appreciated.
However you spend your February 14th, and every other day of the year,

t e e Retw by Ian Greenland
According to a search on my profile, I joined Twitter in 2013, no doubt the result of some blog or other telling me it would help me grow my photography business exponentially whilst keeping my finger on the pulse. I don’t even remember doing it now, but my heart can’t have been in it because time passed, elections happened, Russians meddled, rainforests burned, Brexits Brexitted, Zika’s Zikkad, dictators postured, David Bowie transcended, Black Lives Mattered, Weinstein and co. tasted MeToo, Covid decimated and several people in my locality probably wanted some family portraits, but nothing drove me back to the platform... Last month, nearly eight years later, I finally twut my first ever tweet. It seemed an appropriate time to do it. One of the site’s most prolific and influential denizens had just been shown the door, leaving some 90 million followers, no doubt desperate for a soundbite that would resonate as deeply as their commander in crass’s years of lies, conspiracy theories, personal attacks, self aggrandisement, divisive rhetoric and... errr... #covfefe... ….I had a pun:
Not usually one for puns, and by “not usually one for puns”, I mean I fucking hate puns, in this case it was different because a) it was my pun and b) it was a good pun. Quietly confident this thing was going viral, no doubt landing back on my Facebook feed in a couple of days, having been shared around the world, a pithy hero of the zeitgeist, crowd surfing triumphantly back to the stage, wry smiles and knowing nods personally delivered to millions of strangers. Maybe some of the mega celebrities that retweeted it would track me down and book photoshoots??... Perhaps Biden himself would sit me on his knee, golden sunlight streaming through the window as he ruffles my hair and I struggle happily with the wrapper on a Werther’s Original. Later he’d look on proudly as I
30
skim stones on the glassy surface of a sepia-toned lake.... What actually happened was nobody read it, nobody retweeted it and nobody cared. At the time of writing, according to Twitter statistics, it’s racked up a derisory 222 “impressions” (though it obviously made none) and boasts 2 “engagements” (most likely my own clicks). The mother, Maria, increasingly struggles to manage the onset of Alzheimer’s in her husband, Ernest. THIS CLOSE TO OKAY by Leesa Cross-Smith
On a rainy October night in Kentucky, recently divorced therapist Tallie Clark is on her way home from work when she spots a man precariously standing on the side of a bridge. Without a second thought, Tallie pulls over and jumps out of the car into the pouring rain. She convinces the man to join her for a cup of coffee, and he eventually agrees to come back to her house, where he finally shares his name: Emmett. Over the course of the emotionally charged weekend that follows, Tallie makes it her mission to provide a safe space for Emmett, though she hesitates to confess that this is also her day job. But what she doesn’t realize is that he’s not the only one who needs healing, and she’s not the only one with secrets.

The Beauty behind the mask In these times spending the most time using masks, many of us pay extra attention what remains visible, the eyes, the brows or the forehead. As the vision focuses on these areas they become more important for communication, specially as we lack the power of out smile to transport our emotions. A tired, aged or sad look becomes more apparent and may interfere with showing how we really feel. At Ocean Clinic, we offer you many surgical and non-surgical treatments to show your beauty even behind the mask.

THE PHYSIOLOGICAL & HORMONAL IMPACT OF STRESS We’re likely all familiar with the concept of stress. Familiar with the feeling of it and the effects. But it’s not just about mental and emotional - it’s useful to understand the physiological and hormonal effects. Some stress is useful for performance and we individually have different optimum levels for performance. An experienced actor about to take the stage to a full house will experience nerves. This stress. translates into peak performance on stage. If you were pushed onto stage in front of an audience right now and told to perform,
So individually we have differing levels of stress tolerance and will experience different situations in which stress can be useful, or a hinderance.
STRESS
is a survival response -when there is a threat real or perceived body goes into stress mode
However, for all of us, over the long terms consistently raised stress has major negative effects on our wellbeing
differing views of what happened - one effect of stress is to narrow focus and confuse critical thinking.
The problem is that in evolutionary terms we are not capable of responding differently to real or perceived - so that idiot you argue with on facebook is giving the same stress response as if you’d just seen a tiger running free….
Just to add to the mix, hormones are chemical messengers from the limbic system and neurotransmitters are from the nervous system and they’ll interact and affect each other too.
Think about road rage - how angry and shaky you get - yet most of the time the incident is mere seconds and then gone yet the stress persists - often for hours. We’re designed this way in case the threat was not dealt with effectively the first time. Our threat centre is in the oldest part of the brain the amygdala which is ruled by emotion. When stressed this threat centre takes over and overrules the newer reasoning area. This is why in stressful incidents like a crime or an accident, witnesses will often have
40
chances are the stress would lead to a less than optimum performance.
I’m going to focus on sustained low to medium level stress for this article, but if you operate at high stress levels continuously and/or you have a trauma event, your adrenalin and norandrenline can keep firing, resulting in adrenal fatigue, which is the next step up if daily stressors aren’t dealt with effectively. So what are the effects of cortisol the stress hormone if it stays raised? Well, its useful to understand that hormones don’t act in isolation, they have a cascade effect and when one changes it will affect another.
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
Let’s take a look… In the case of cortisol it shares the same mother hormone pregenolone as our sex hormones. What this means is that if our pregenolone is being utilised for cortisol there is less available for production of estrogen and testosterone. So, as cortisol stays raised, estrogen and testosterone are lowered. We’re likely to experience weight gain, increased abdominal fat, fatigue, loss of libido, loss of concentration… As we gain weight you will notice effects of increased levels of ghrelin (appetite stimulating hormone) and insulin (hormone needed to lower blood glucose levels), as well as decreased leptin (the fullness hormone) levels. Meaning we’re likely to eat more, particularly sugary and starchy carbssee how the negative cycle starts to gather momentum?
the
Remember we mentioned neurotransmitters? If you’re stressed this can tip into depression with means you likely have low levels of endorphins, which are feel-good neurohormones. So you see stress can have quite the impact and many elements are outside of our direct control.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? HERE’S SOME PRACTICAL, ACTIONABLE TIPS….
1 2 3 4
Minimise stressors in your life negative news, negative social media, even negative friends and situations.
Practice stress management techniques - meditation (it doesn’t need to be still, it could be running or another practice) and getting out into nature. Japanese studies show that immersion in a natural environment lowers cortisol levels, blood pressure and heart rate.
Exercise - exercise release endorphins boosting mood and alleviating stress. It’s nature’s anti-depressant.
Practice individual spirituality - cultivate a practice that connect you with your self - like affirmations, gratitude, morning grounding and positivity rituals.

THEY SAID THE FUTURE WAS ... AND THEY WERE RIGHT
THE UNIQUE VILLA ALCUZCUZ HAS BEEN SOLD! Article by Vivion O’Kelly

he recent sale of the most outstanding property to have been built in recent years in the Marbella area has been announced by the luxury development company BRIGHT. This is both a cause for celebration within the entire Costa del Sol property community and a welcome sign that, come what may, Marbella remains one of the top destinations in Europe for luxury property development. The property in question is Villa Alcuzcuz, an amazing tour de force of architecture, technology, environmental excellence and interior design. This multi-award winning villa, designed by UDesign and developed by BRIGHT, was the recipient of Best Architecture in Spain and Best Architecture in Europe awards from the International Property Awards, and was Marbella’s first Passive House, which is the world’s most sought-after standard in energy efficient construction, quality and comfort, guaranteeing up to

Villa Alcuzcuz also creates new standards in luxury, redefining the concept of easy living in a world that is becoming increasingly more complex to live in. The sale also confirms recent property trends on the Costa del Sol. Demand for high-end properties in the area has been increasing steadily over the past year, despite the Covid-19 crisis, prompting more and more people to think of the beautiful climate and lifestyle of Marbella when considering the purchase of a luxury villa. The reasons for these changing trends are two-fold: lifestyle and investment potential. Lifestyle means many things to many different people, but in these exceptional times, it is a safe environment in natural surroundings reasonably close to essential services. It is also the ability to work from home, even if one’s business base is located elsewhere in the world. We have no clear idea yet of what the future of the workplace will look like, but we know that things will never be the same again in a post-Covid world, and we must arrange our lifestyles accordingly. One of these arrangements must be to invest wisely.
Sebastian Jiménez expressed his gratitude for the help he received from the BRIGHT team in successfully marketing Villa Alcuzcuz. “We could not have done it without the help from BRIGHT. The whole team were super supportive throughout the whole process and anything we needed we had. And now we’re looking towards Vista Lago Residences, BRIGHT’s new development, another great project. A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE‌ In these strange times dear readers, one is unable to report about exciting new events and happenings in Marbella. However, the sun is back, and warmer weather is on its way after a very cold January where we experienced snow covering La Concha, snow in Fuengirola and our neighboring Africa enjoyed white sand dunes. So, why not light a couple of candles enjoy a glass of wine and take a trip down memory lane. In October 2019 my firm hosted a fabulous event in my golf club, Royal Las Brisas. I was asked by Rolls Royce Spain to invite members and guests to the launch of their two new models. What a lovely evening it turned out to be thanks to the 270 attendees who all contributed to a fantastic atmosphere by dressing up and dancing till midnight. They were welcomed with pink champagne while enjoying the luxurious two new Rolls Royce models. This was accompanied by an abundance of canapes, more champagne and cocktails plus live music from Susan Valery. The entire event was great fun and I look forward to hosting the next launch when life resumes some normality.

THE BIRTH OF MARBELLA CLUB – THE FOUNDER OF MARBELLA A few years back I was asked by national Danish television to film an interview with Count Rudy who had experienced first-hand the beginning of the hot spot, Marbella and the birth of our infamous Marbella Club Hotel. Being given this opportunity was a true joy and it was a pleasure to spend time with him reminiscing and listening to his many stories of the opening of the resort alongside its original founder and owner, Prince Alfonso Hohenloe.
weeks. Partying to the early morning on the beach, enjoying local seafood and wine combined with venturing on donkey ride picnics into the mountains. I was told Count Rudy managed to convince Liz Taylor and Richard Burton to join in on this – one can only imagine the beauty of Liz Taylor on a donkey in a kaftan and sapphires!
Still to this day Marbella Club Hotel remains the center and heart of Marbella and I appreciate the charm and low-key elegance that is nurtured by the new owners. Whether enjoying the signature “Bullshot” cocktail in the bar or dining in the exquisite Grill, one finds Count Rudy keeping traditions alive by mingling with guests and friends ensuring that the welcoming feeling is still alive.
Having sponsored several of Prince Marie-Louise of Prussia’s (the wife of Count Rudy) charity events in aid of Concordia, a charity which carries out outstanding work to help HIV and AIDS sufferers in our local area by creating a center where victims can come for medical assistance, caring advice, food and much more, - I have got to know and respect them both tremendously. The interview started from the beginning where Prince Alfonso Hohenloe initially, by chance, came across a sleeping, tiny, sunny fishing village set in a huge pine forest directly on the sea. His instant passion for the place resulted in the creation of a private finca where over the years, he invited an abundance of friends from his social circle of glamourous cosmopolitans. This resulted in the need for him to form the Marbella Club Hotel, as everyone wanted to return.

The seclusion and tranquility of the location made Marbella a heavenly retreat for Hollywood stars, royalty and world leaders, allowing them to get away from the limelight for a few

WHAT EXACTLY IS A
DESIGNER VILLA? By Anastasia Sukhanova
60
Keep it Real
Function and furniture come first, it’s never an afterthought. A “designer villa” might sound luxurious and sophisticated, but what does it actually mean? We talk to the development company, BRIGHT, to find out. While we are constantly bombarded by freshly-coined terms that define emerging trends and concepts, we are often ignorant of their real meaning. A ‘Designer villa’ might sound luxurious and sophisticated, but what does it actually mean? Design-led developments are at the core of BRIGHT’s philosophy, aimed at creating free-flowing living spaces that improve one’s quality of life. So, what elevates a normal luxury villa into a ‘designer villa’? We talk to BRIGHT’s Creative Director, Jason Harris.
DE SIGN START S O N T HE INS ID E The concept is holistic, and all design starts with the interiors. Function and furniture come first, it’s never an afterthought. Because of state-of-theart space optimization, designer villas feel bigger than huge mansions: they have no wasted space in hallways and corridors, and no walls where one would normally expect to find them. Moreover, this makes it possible for them to be homes with open lines of communication between each space. This means that a family can enjoy being together while being involved in different activities, and the idea of a quiet home office that doesn’t feel completely detached from the rest of the house is totally possible.
PL O T POSIT ION ING AND VIE W S A designer villa is not just plopped on to any available plot of land. Its creators carefully consider plot elevation and orientation, general location, seasonal changes in natural lighting and lifestyle nuances of the local area. In a development that consists of several designer villas, the generosity of the individual plots and the carefully thought-out orientation of each villa should ensure complete privacy.
61
Keep it Real
All rooms in a designer villa are designed to take advantage of the available views. Where possible, a kitchen would enjoy the morning sun and the stove will be facing the view, and windows are placed strategically to allow the light to flood into each space during different times of the day. The bedrooms are given just as much attention. Subtle but irreplaceable, art is found everywhere – in the form of sculptures, wallpaper, lighting, and even the choice of plants and their pots. While pieces of art can often be seen as purely decorative, in a designer villa they are used to bring together adjacent spaces, introduce a focal point, inspire reflection, or to invite one to take a stroll around the property.
Buying a house is often a lifestyle choice, not just a location one. Whether it’s your holiday home or a permanent base, a designer villa is built taking into account the characteristics of the local climate, maximizing the opportunity of leading an outdoor lifestyle if the home happens to be somewhere warm. It makes extensive use of windows that slide away and favours open plan solutions. Whether it’s a quiet reading spot where you can dip your feet in the pool, a sitting area where one can observe the spectacular views as well as watch TV, a designer villa creates balance and harmony between the villa and its surroundings – and you often don’t have to choose between being outside or inside!

In that sense, a designer villa by BRIGHT is much more than luxury finishes, top brands and impressive architectural solutions. It is a space created to live slowly and tastefully, even if you can only do that for a few minutes each day. A designer villa will help you make the most of those minutes, whether it’s with a stunning sunset view at the end of a long work day, or with a freshly picked orange from your organic kitchen garden. Sandon is a brand that focus on everyday moments. They believe lasting quality is key, and little details like the weight of blanket or the texture of a cushion is the difference between something being ordinary and truly special. They use only the highest quality of materials and have a goal that the pieces they create will get better and better with time and can be passed onto the next generation. As a brand Sandon believes in individuality and encourages people to put their own stamp on their products. Therefore, they offer a wide selection of fabrics, materials, textiles and sizes.
Spanish craftsmanship Sandon want to support local businesses and make an effort to produce as much as they can right here in Spain. As of right now all their furniture is handmade in Zaragoza by Spanish craftsmen – dedicated individuals who care deeply about what they do and how they do it. Many of them have worked at the same factory since they were young and are still there to this day. The quality of their work would be truly hard to replicate anywhere else in the world.
What’s next? According to the owners Sandon is a work in progress, but the future is looking increasingly exciting. This year they will introduce their first designer collaboration with world renowned interior designer, Helene Hennie. To view their furniture and read more about Sandon, visit sandon.es. Sandon also assist private and professional clients with bigger orders and large-scale projects like complete homes, restaurants and hotels. Read more on their website.

We wrote about our concept of the Garden Villa in the December issue of SOCIETY, in which the inside views make up for any possible absence of views on the outside. The design of the villa and its views are thus internalised in such a way that the villa can be located on any plot that may not actually have had magnificent views to begin with. We continue in this article with a closer look at one of the main rooms in any house that does not have to provide great views. This is the bedroom, of course, because one normally goes to bed after night falls. But the bedroom, designed and built as a suite, as most contemporary luxury master bedrooms are, has become a private place in a house that one can relax in, and with the modern office now being essentially a small electronic device, the bedroom has also become a place for working in.
fittings and interior design to create a unique ambience that makes one feel comfortable to be in and comfortable to look at. This is architecture and interior design as an art form, making the art of living very real. The open-plan living/dining/kitchen areas, along with two bedrooms and bathrooms, are on the ground floor, where we also have the open central courtyard. The room we now look closer at is the master bedroom, which occupies the top floor. The master bedroom takes the Zen concept upstairs, echoing the interior design of the rest of the house. The images show the perfect symmetry of the design, each almost an abstract arrangement of blacks, white and greys with the occasional touch of colour. The most basic geometry of the straight line and the circle has been used to maximum effect, and the result is a delight to contemplate and to use, the classic synthesis of form and function.
THIS IS ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN AS AN ART FORM, MAKING THE ART OF LIVING VERY REAL.
The interior architecture and design of the Garden Villa has a distinct Japanese, almost Zen-like, flavour to it, in keeping with the overall aim of the architects to use nature as a vital design ingredient. In the rest of the property, natural elements such as trees, plants and rocks are used in perfect harmony with furniture,

The floor plan is simple: a rectangular bedroom with a rectangular bathroom en suite. The bed sits at the centre of one wall, with the living area at the other end, where a large television set is flanked by two high windows.
The fireplace is low, long and narrow, while the sofas and table are also at a height that allows for clear views through the windows. The layout of the bathroom features the shower at one end and the window at the other. The overall size of the suite is not small, but not huge either: its minimalist design makes it look quite large. Looking towards the bed we see how the symmetry of the room is accentuated by the large circular
mural, reflected in the round coffee tables in front. This is set into the wall, illuminated around the circumference and bordered by a black frame, which in turn echoes the black headboard. On each side of the bed, potted willow sticks sit on a tall marble plinth, like silent sentinels, and fairy tale lights appear to float magically down from the ceiling. The bed is, in fact, a UDesign original, custom made for this space.
In front of the bed is a lounge area that invites us to get up and sit by the fire to chat, read, watch television or work alone in peace. There is nothing here that should not be here, and there is nothing missing either: the essence of great design. We also see the same light warm oak flooring wood that has been used in the base of the bed.

On one side of the bed is the almost open-plan wardrobe, making the hanging clothes and any objects and accessories placed on the shelves an integral part of the design, to be seen either as they are or partially hidden by the black glass sliding doors. There is no single light source in the wardrobe, but soft light coming through from behind, as if every space within were illuminated.
74
Home Coture
The bathroom is on the other side, with a large piece of modern artwork on the wall beside the entrance to it. One has to say “entrance, because there is certainly no simple door here that opens and shuts on a bathroom in any traditional sense, but large sliding doors that are probably better left open all the time, given the view inside. This view shows a beautiful geometric design made by two halfcircle mirrors; the completed circles on each of the other sides being shelving. The shower area is a study in black, with light browns, soft whites and a touch of gold. The three horizontal strips of hidden lighting work exceptionally well against the tall verticals within and surrounding the unit. The towel holder is recessed into the wall, and the bench in the middle of the room is both useful and a gently contrasting design element. The shower is separated from the toilet by glass, and to maintain an even temperature throughout, the heating is under-floor. Opposite the shower area is the majestic bath with a full-wall window behind it and an equisite chandelier made up of organically shaped individual pieces, each with its own cord, hanging from the ceiling. The black marble bath itself appears to be an organic unit rising directly from the floor, and it is quite literally part of the floor. The view of the bathroom from the entrance is, perhaps, the most visually stimulating image one sees in this master bedroom suite, and if it appears somewhat confusing at first glance, that is because we are also
75

looking at the reflection behind us in the mirrors. The grain of the marble is accentuated by the numerous light sources, creating a kind of light installation based on contrasting tones, textures and simple geometric shapes. One needs to look close to identify the hand basins with their gold taps set into the mirrors. The shelving on both sides are studies in chiaroscuro, the result of hidden illumination used in a creative way. As an additional touch of luxury, there are small close-up mirrors within the bigger mirror. The Garden Villa master suite has been designed for those for whom the contemplation of beauty is a favoured activity. Strictly speaking, there is only one artwork in the entire

suite, because more than one is not needed in this beautiful space. And the contemplation of beauty is a fine way to both end one’s day and start a new one. Architecture and Interior Design by UDesign: www.udesign.es

Want to learn Spanish? SEVEN TIPS ON HOW TO GO NATIVE
Karethe Linaae is a Norwegian writer living in Ronda. Her book, Casita 26 – Searching for a Slice of Andalusian Paradise is available on Amazon. For more information, please go to snobb.net
Many foreigners live in Spain for years and never learn to speak the local language. Some say they are too old. Others won’t even try, surviving I suppose, with English and sign language. I am the first to admit that my memory isn’t as receptive now as it was when I was young, but for us who have chosen to live in rural Andalucía, not learning Spanish is really not an option. For those who struggle with past and future verb conjugations and find Andalu’ twang hard to understand, here are a few tips on how to go native and achieve semi-fluency at any age.
Change el Chip To quote a much-used Spanglish expression, the first thing one must do to learn Spanish is to ‘cambiar el chip’. In other words, start with the attitude. We must tell ourselves repeatedly and truly come to believe that we will speak Spanish. Every time we say to ourselves that something is too difficult, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Learning a foreign language isn’t only a way to widen ones horizons and enables one to communicate with the locals, it is also healthy for the brain. Practicing multiple languages can keep Alzheimer’s and dementia at bay. It is never too late. My role model for continual learning is a friend of my mother in Norway, who still reads the French Le Monde newspaper every morning even though she just celebrated her 100th birthday…
78
Find a new maestro When we came to Ronda, I was recommended to enrol in a Spanish course for foreigners. Actually, nobody we know became fluent through that school, though several of the students redid the beginner course numerous times. I left after a couple of months, finding that I learned less stuck in a classroom between other foreigners than on the street. Most foreign residents in Ronda attend a private Spanish school. It is a great place to meet the local international community, but once again, nobody we know who has taken classes there for years seem to speak fluent Spanish. At least not yet… I am not trying to discredit the value of formal education, but one cannot achieve total immersion in a classroom. Cliché as it may sound, try to attend ‘the school of life’ as well. Begin by talking with the neighbours. There are no better teachers than the locals. Take Monolo, who taught us the classic (and sadly dying) art of reed basket weaving. The lesson took place on his patio, didn’t cost us a cent and we even walked away with a basket as a present and offers of a future lesson in broom making!
THE LESSON TOOK PLACE ON HIS PATIO, DIDN’T COST US A CENT AND WE EVEN WALKED AWAY WITH A BASKET AS A PRESENT
Slow down We all want things to happen instantaneously. This is certainly the case for us who came from North America to the Spanish south. But when you move to a mañana culture, you have to embrace the fluidness of any situation and accept what may come.
Though Andalusians talk at break neck speeds and never seem to run out of topics, the general pace of life here is more leisurely than in northern climates. It is a challenge for some of us to slow down, and more difficult still to try to calm our urgency to speak perfect Spanish right away. But learning one expression per day is sufficient. Daring to engage with one local person per week is a step in the right direction. If you cannot read a whole book in Spanish yet, start with travel brochures or Hola magazines. The know-how will come in it’s own good time one of these mañanas. If you have chosen to come to Spain in your latter years, there is no hurry, is there? Many of the elderly in our neighbourhood love to chat, like Mari-KiKi. Now in her late 80’s, she grew up in the flourmills deep down in Ronda’s Tajo. The buildings are now in ruins, but she will gladly tell you how our town used to be. Ask as many questions as you like. The bell wont ring and she has no time restraints. And more importantly, you will be doing your elderly neighbours a social service by offering them your ear.
Go shopping Some people do not need much encouragement in this department, while for others the mere thought of going into stores is torturous. But do not undervalue this seemingly trivial pastime. There are endless language lessons to be had by simply going to a local corner shop. We love and frequent all of them, though one of my favourites is Pepe’s. His store is so small that barely two clients can fit at the same time, but you won’t believe what you can find behind his counter. These types of stores are also the best to source local produce. Pepe’s vegetables come from his father’s field, which provides fabulous organic
vegetables. The smaller the establishment, the more regulars you will meet and thus, the better the conversation. Besides, by buying from these mom and pop businesses, you contribute to the local economy. Make sure to become a regular, so the shop owner knows what you like and will stock it for you. If they do not have something, ask for it – in Spanish of course. If you are not sure which brand to get, ask again. Ask Juan Lu at our mini-market which vinegar to use to clean windows and there will immediately be three amas de casa starting a major debate on the pros and cons of effective window washing. Soon you will find yourself joining in with your own opinion. Brace yourself and stand for half an hour lining-up at the butchers while listening to local gossip. Though I dread cooking, my inevitable waits at the butchers have been immensely productive, expanding my cooking vocabulary significantly, while giving me a chance to catch up on births, deaths and weddings of every family in town.
Do what you love A magical way to learn a language is to do so subconsciously. You hear a word enough times and whoops, there it is as part of your own vocabulary. It snuck in the backdoor of your brain without you noticing or trying to capture it. The easiest way to achieve this type of indirect learning is to concentrate on doing something you love. If you like motorbikes, join an MC club and make frequent visits to the guys at the local mechanic shops. If your special interest is sewing, you will get great ideas at the fabric store or the haberdashery, where the waits are always long and customers always want to share their craft projects with the proprietors. When we moved to Spain we decided to try new things. My husband always wanted to learn woodcarving, so he joined a wood workshop. I took up furniture restoration and together we became members of the local Friends of the Opera. As we love hiking, we also joined a couple of senderismo clubs. Why not? Whilst in the mountain doing what we most enjoyed, I couldn’t avoid picking up expressions about the trail, the kilometres ahead, altitude climbed, packs carried, aches and pains, lunches to be had or other trails that we were advised to do. I didn’t consciously try
to learn anything, I just chugged along and the words magically lodged themselves somewhere deep inside my cranium.
Become an amigo To truly get a sense of belonging as a foreign resident, you need to make local friends. However, this is a to-way street. To make amigos, you yourself need to be a friend of the locals. If they see you only mingling with other foreigners, they will naturally assume that you are not interested in their lives and thus will not be interested in you. To become an amigo, you need to become one of them. Be an active participant and a good neighbour. Greet them, ask them how they are and offer to help whenever possible. People are generally patient with one, even if ones grammar is limited to present tense. It is the effort that counts. Enquire about neighbours’ health, and they will soon do the same in return. Learn the names of their children, their spouses and their pets. Participate in local meetings and go to church concerts. Dress up and join the local fiestas. Help the kids in the hood with their English homework. Become member of your neighbourhood association. Volunteer your time in something you believe in. Vote in local elections. Go to church. Get a garden plot. Buy and consume local produce. Help friends and neighbours with the harvest. Buy Christmas goodies from the local kids to support their school trips. Attend fundraisers and walk the solidarity walks with the people of your town. The locals will appreciate your interest and eventually begin to consider you their friend.
Realise your limitations It is sometimes easy for those who have lived in other places to unconsciously look down at the rural population for their lack of worldliness and international savvy. The one lesson I have learned by living in small-town Andalucía is that experience is very relative. I might speak half a dozen languages and have travelled the world, but I do not know how to dance the Bulería, recite the poems of Federico García Lorca by heart, make our orange tree bloom year round, saddle a horse, identify all the different species of wild orchid in the sierra or make a fluffy tortilla. So, in the end, I certainly have lots to learn to become a true Andalusa!

or years we’ve been resigned to the fact that a large proportion of globally harvested produce is genetically engineered (GE - a process where the genetic material of one organism is implanted into the permanent genetic code of another to produce a more “desirable” trait in subsequent strains) These days, approx 92% of corn, 94% of soybeans and 94% of cotton grown in the US are GE, with estimates placing some three quarters of processed food on store shelves containing GE ingredients. Organic options are harder to find, if available and typically much more expensive. Despite assurances from the scientific community – most notably in a comprehensive 2016 study conducted by the US Congress-funded National Academy of Sciences – that GE foods are safe to eat, do not adversely affect the environment and actually help reduce the use of pesticides, many people still hold suspicions about the integrity and safety of scientifically modified food. Whilst the intervention of science and technology is inescapable in most facets of our lives, for those not on the GE train, or too unaware or apathetic to care, there’s often a gut response to what goes in our gut. It’s understandable to feel knee-jerk skepticism when you research some of the modifications: Cabbages augmented with venomactivating scorpion genes – the poison which deters caterpillars (avoiding the use of pesticides) has its toxin further modified to remain apparently harmless
82
to humans. A year-round growth hormone from a Chinook Salmon added to the genetic code of an Atlantic Salmon and activated using genes from the eel-like Ocean Pout (this sounding fishy to anyone else??...) results in accelerated growth - twice as fast as regular Atlantic Salmon. Ignoring for now, genetically modified, glow-inthe-dark cats (Google it!!) because you shouldn’t be eating cats, however easy they’ve made it to find them without turning the kitchen light on, there are so many weird and wondrous gene combos (cancerfighting chicken eggs, less flatulent
cows, medicinal bananas....), you begin to wonder what the next frontier in GMO is. Well, where do most franchises go when they’ve exhausted all other ideas? Where did James Bond: Moonraker, Hellraiser: Bloodline, Airplane 2, Leprechaun 4, Critters 4, and Jason...errr 10 go? That’s correct: SPACE!! And if it worked for them - it didn’t – who’s to say it won’t work for some tomatoes? In fact it already has. According to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp (CASTC), they’ve
scaled the research to the point that they can actually label it a modern agricultural industry. The country’s ascent as a world space power is partly responsible for their (ahem) meteoric rise to become the preeminent breeder of space crops. Some 200 space plant and fruit varieties, including cotton, soybeans, wheat, maize and rice have already seen planting approval from regulatory bodies, with over 3,000 more in development. Disease-resistant rice and thornless, more easily harvested peppercorn spice are just two of their many success stories. Whilst skeptics and xenophobes will likely baulk at the notion of China developing interstellar spuds, (“Look what happened when one of ‘em ate a bat Gary!!”) the practise has had a hugely positive impact at home, a country challenged with feeding a vast population from limited arable land. In a nation where much of the food poverty exists in the rural areas, space crops have provided major relief, developing local economies whilst creating unique products and bolstering food security.
yielded metre-long black-eyed pea sprouts and tomato vines sprawling over 150 square metres, bearing 10,000 fruits, and they’ve achieved this through space-induced mutation breeding aka. space mutagenesis. For nearly 100 years, earthbound scientists have been exposing seeds to radiation and chemicals in order to encourage mutations leading to greater yield, crop stability or resilience to climate change. According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation, we’ve now seen more than 2,500 varieties of plants bred by mutagenesis. Space is in many ways an oven-ready new setting in which to carry out the process. Outside the Earth’s atmosphere, seeds exposed to the prevalence of strong cosmic rays - high-energy particles travelling close to the speed of light (marginally slower than cashiers in UK Aldi stores luzz your veg into the bagging area) – as well as other conditions like vacuums, microgravity, extreme cold and geomagnetic interference have a higher chance of mutations which can then be cultivated into subsequent crop strains back home. In the 60s, both the United States and Soviet Union explored space mutation breeding in order to make spaceliving more sustainable / win a pissing contest, but it’s China who’ve since
According to CASTC, in 2018 alone, with some 2.4 million hectares assigned to “space crops”, China’s space-breeding efforts had a direct economic impact of more than 200 billion yuan (nearly £23 billion by today’s rates), yielding more than 1.3 million tonnes of food and directly benefitting the poor. As of October 2020, CASTC reports through the implementation of space crop agriculture and other methods, they’ve eliminated poverty in 21 villages across nine provinces. In Yang County, Shaanxi province alone, that pertains to some 30,000 individuals lifted from destitution. With 1 in 9 people around the world going hungry each day, perhaps it’s time we look to the stars for answers. Let’s face it, E.T.’s probably more likely to offer a solution to global inequality than our earthly overlords. Whilst space seeds are no magic pill – only a fraction of seeds sent to the heavens sprout the desired angel wings, plus the costs of launching them there are near-prohibitive – it’s thought with the predicted commercialization of space travel, low cost opportunities for the practise will become more readily available. Then it will just be a case of ensuring practical, utilitarian application of space-breeding to benefit those most in need – the poor and hungry, the struggling farming communities – and not lining the pockets of big business....
