Happy New Year and Welcome to 2018! It’s always great to welcome a new year and, whether 2017 was great or grim for you, we have plenty to get you started as you mean to go on. Towards the end of the year the world seemed obsessed with the concept of Bitcoin – would there be a sudden rash of millionaires or would the bubble burst, leaving some investors with egg on their faces? It seems that an awful lot of people have some very fixed ideas on this virtual currency, but actually don’t know an awful lot about it. Eleanor McKenzie investigates the phenomenon that is Bitcoin and reveals some of the most fascinating facts. Many of you have family living in the UK and will most probably be visiting the country at various points during the year – so why not combine a duty visit with a short holiday? We have included a list of some of the best UK places to stay in 2018 and some of them are old favourites, while there are one or two more surprising new ideas – especially if you’re planning a July trip and there’s a 50/50 chance of the sun making an appearance! Our cover star this month is Cillian Murphy of Peaky Blinders fame, an actor who looks set to continue the tradition of great Irish thesps; just think Richard Harris, Peter O’Toole, Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell, Michael Fassbender, Ciarán Hinds, Gabriel Byrne and Brendan Gleeson, to name but a few. After spending his teenage years pursuing a career in music, the young Cillian found himself on a theatre stage almost by accident and hasn’t looked back since. Of course, he isn’t short of female fans who obsessively follow his every move, even if he is possibly most famous for playing a brutal gangster. There’s no accounting for taste, I suppose.

If you’re a bit of a technophobe, you’ll probably be more alarmed than excited by our rundown of new developments with which we’re likely to become familiar this year. Apparently, we’re going to be introduced to new concepts such as smart scooters (oh yes – we could do with a few of these in Marbella!), printed pills (including those little blue ones, I presume?) and plastic pets, among other inventions. Plastic pets? I think that I’ll stick with the actual, flesh and blood variety for now, thanks. Of course, the New Year means new starts, so why not improve your relationship skills with our Sam Owen and build yourself a fitter, healthier body with personal trainer to the stars, Matt Roberts? The Sisko Akt sisters also have some excellent advice on how you can build a more confident, stylish you in 2018. And, if healthy eating looks set to form a major part of your year why not consider a trip to Manuka? Now with restaurants in La Cañada and on Marbella’s Paseo Maritimo, the team has all the knowledge and skill to make your new eating plan both healthy and delicious. With his odd, other-worldly looks and piercing blue eyes there is no mistaking Cillian Murphy for any other actor currently working on TV or in Hollywood. After winning the plum role of Tommy Shelby in the BBCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s massively successful series Peaky Blinders, which follows the fortunes of a Birmingham criminal gang, Murphy has seen his star rise faster than even his most devoted fans could have thought possible.

orn in Douglas, County Cork on May the 25th 1976, the young Cillian was raised in Ballintemple, Cork to a family of teachers and amateur musicians, which possibly explains why his first aim was a career in rock. Cillian’s experience at his Roman Catholic school was not particularly good and he found himself in trouble a lot of the time before his latent talent was encouraged by Pat Kiernan, Director of the Corcadorca Theatre Company when he roused himself to participate in a drama module. His English teacher tried to persuade Cillian to pursue his new-found interest in theatre, but the call of the music business was, at the time, much louder. Unlike many teens who dream of being a rock star but do nothing about it, Cillian spent several years honing his guitar technique with his brother Páidi in several bands. The pair had been

“I was unbelievably cocky and had nothing to lose, and it suited the part, I suppose.” obsessed with The Beatles during their childhood, but ultimately chose to name themselves after a Frank Zappa song, ‘The Sons of Mr. Greengenes’. Perhaps they didn’t enjoy the success of John, Paul, George and Ringo, but were obviously talented enough to attract the attentions of a scout from Acid Jazz Records, who offered them a five-album deal. Since this would have resulted in the brothers having to relinquish the rights to their compositions and, with Páidi still being in secondary school, the project was put on hold. Cillian had started to study law at University College Cork, but his heart was never in it and he failed his allimportant first year exams. He was still playing with his band but, yet again, his interest in drama was piqued by Pat Kiernan, this time by a production of A

Clockwork Orange that the Corcadorca Theatre Company had developed. His first role of any significance was in the UCC production of Frank McGuinness’s Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, following this up with a part in the UCC production of Little Shop of Horrors, which took place in the Cork Opera House. Having decided to make the move from rock into theatre, Cillian made sure that he alerted Pat Kiernan to his decision and it wasn’t long before he made his professional stage debut, in the Corcadora Theatre Company’s production of Enda Walsh’s Disco Pigs. Meeting Murphy for the first time in 1996, Enda Walsh knew that he was in the presence of someone extraordinary: “There was something about him – he was incredibly enigmatic and he would walk into a room with real presence and you’d go, ‘My God’. It had nothing

to do with those bloody eyes that everyone’s going on about all the time.” To Murphy’s eternal credit, he recalls the same event slightly differently: “I was unbelievably cocky and had nothing to lose, and it suited the part, I suppose.” Disco Pigs, which had originally been intended for a three-week run in Cork, was so successful that it effectively put paid to any musical ambitions that he might have still harboured, touring Europe, Canada and Australia for two years. By the time the whole experience was over Cillian Murphy was an actor, whether he liked it or not.

Fortunately he seemed to like it, following up his success in Disco Pigs with memorable performances in Much Ado About Nothing, The Country Boy and Juno and the Paycock. Although he credits his early years in the theatre with equipping him for all that was to follow it soon became obvious that this Cork boy wanted to spread his wings, appearing in independent movies like The Trench (1999) and On the Edge (2001) and moving, first to Dublin and then to London.

The first major breakthrough came in 2002 when he was cast in Danny Boyle’s post-apocalyptic horror movie, 28 Days Later. Cast in the leading role of Jim, a bicycle

courier who awakes from a coma to find that the world as he knows it has been turned on its head by plague, Murphy soon found that it was time to consider a further move – this time to Hollywood. Boyle’s gamble to cast the virtually unknown actor had paid off handsomely – completed for a budget of $8 million, 28 Days Later went on to make $84.7 at the box office. Suddenly the young actor with the strange eyes was a very bankable proposition. However, Murphy stayed true to his dedication to indie movies with an appearance in Intermission, in which he starred with the equally compelling Colin Farrell. Released in 2003 this film, which concerned a bank heist, became the highest grossing Irish independent movie of all time, until Ken Loach’s The Wind That Shakes the Barley (in which Murphy also took a leading role) was released in 2006. Appearing in a film franchise is perhaps not the most direct way to artistic acknowledgement, but it certainly makes paying the bills a lot easier. If Murphy looked upon his role as Dr. Jonathan Crane as a long-delayed payday, then it would be hard to blame him. Originally asked by director Christopher Nolan to audition for the part of Bruce Wayne/Batman in 2005’s Batman Begins, Murphy claimed that he was the wrong physical type to do the part justice, but felt that he could take on the double role of Dr. Crane and super-villain, Scarecrow. This was a decision that not only attracted the attention of some important people in Hollywood, but allowed him to take on more interesting but lowly paid work. Braden in Neil Jordan’s adaptation of Patrick McCabe’s Breakfast on Pluto was a stretch, then the casual viewer would have been unaware. Murphy threw his heart and soul into this tricky part, Jordan’s most Irish movie since his ground-breaking debut Angel in 1982 and emerged with his dignity firmly intact. Breakfast on Pluto didn’t exactly set the box office on fire – or even attract many glowing reviews – but Kitten Braden was an eye-catching project and simply added to Murphy’s growing reputation for versatility. Throughout his career he has continued to return to the theatre, taking on roles in classics such as Chekhov’s The Seagull and J.M. Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World, not to mention modern dramas such as Neil LaBute’s The Shape of Things and John Kolvenbach’s Love Song, continuing a long tradition of actors alternating well-paid movie roles with theatre projects that provided more mental satisfaction.

Tinseltown for the challenges of playing a Brummie gangster in the dark days following World War I must have carried the imprint of genius. This BBC2 series (it even failed to make it to the more mainstream territory of BBC1) has shown itself a sure-fire ratings winner, with a cast that has included the likes of Sam Neill, Helen McCrory, Tom Hardy, Paddy Considine and Adrien Brody and has regularly attracted glowing reviews and impressive viewing figures. As Shelby, Murphy is a memorable, glowering and unpredictable presence whose every appearance on British TV garners more fans.

Not that his BBC success means that Cillian Murphy isn’t also pursuing his Hollywood career – in the past few years he has starred in Aloft, Transcendence, In the Heart of the Sea and Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan’s most recent movie. He has also reunited with Enda Walsh again in 2014 for a production of his play, Ballyturk.

He also continued his reputation as a soft touch for indie filmmakers, with turns in the straight-to-DVD thriller Peacock, in which he again played a character with a female alter-ego, contrasting his low budget projects with key parts in larger films, such as reprising his role as Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow in more Batman movies and appearing in Inception, another splashy Christopher Nolan movie with an all-star cast that included Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In 2011 Murphy made another triumphant return to the theatre, picking up an Irish Times Theatre Award and a Drama Desk Award for his part in Misterman, a one-hander written by his old Disco Pigs mentor, Enda Walsh. He continued to work extensively in Hollywood, but in 2013 was offered the chance to take on what many Murphy fans feel is his defining role to date: Tommy Shelby in the BBC drama, Peaky Blinders. Even with the benefit of hindsight it seems like an odd move for someone whose Hollywood star was distinctly on the ascent. However, whatever persuaded Murphy that it was a good idea to swap the delights of

He feels no pressure to move permanently to Hollywood, unlike many of his colleagues and maintains good relationships with his earliest artistic contacts. With his down-to-earth attitude and an ambition more artistic than financial, it’s likely that Cillian Murphy will continue to be a huge success both on the small and big screens for a very long time to come.

Mrs. Brown Puts Her Foot Down

We know that this ‘traditional’ (oh, all right then – oldfashioned) sit-com tends to divide people but we can’t help summoning a supportive cheer for Brendan O’Carroll, creator of Mrs. Brown’s Boys. Of course, he hardly needs the money (although he has been declared bankrupt in the past) but we just love his attitude when faced with policies against gay characters on TV. After being told that Russian TV networks wanted to licence the show but only on condition that Rory, Mrs. Brown’s screamingly camp son, was removed from the cast list, O’Carroll told the TV bosses to take a hike. This healthy cash injection could have considerably eased any existing money worries the clan still has (daughter Fiona and son-in-law Martin Delany were in hot water recently over their tax arrangements), but O’Carroll was not persuaded. Mind you, having taken the trouble to cover up the arrival of the new actor to take on the role of Rory with an unlikely tale about radical cosmetic surgery, he probably felt that it was better not to complicate matters any further.

James Norton’s Bond Audition? Yes, we do know that Daniel Craig has already signed up for at least another outing as Bond, but we still can’t help wondering who will take over when he finally decides that he’s had enough. One of the current hot contenders has to be James Norton and, let’s face it, he not only has the acting chops to do it but his turn in the BBC’s gangster drama McMafia looks set to help him overtake the opposition. Weeks of brutal training with a Russian martial arts master apparently terrified the Ampleforth-educated actor to such an extent that he feared that he might die. During training in the Systema method Norton was punched for hours and his instructor would also hold a hand over his mouth until his body spasmed to help him to cope with the pain. “We had hours and hours of this man punching me. It’s about taking the pain and relaxing through it,” Norton said. However, it wasn’t even this tough guy training that started the gossip initially, but pictures of Norton wearing a dinner jacket and bow tie. Be prepared for a slew of rumours surrounding other actors who have also been required to wear a tuxedo!

A Right Royal Bash Of course, the biggest showbiz event of 2018 is bound to be the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The engagement photos, which were released just before Christmas, hinted that this would be a very different royal wedding to Prince William’s to Kate Middleton – and not just because the ceremony itself would be a far more modest affair. Possibly bearing this situation in mind, the date was set for a Saturday so that as many people as possible could make the journey to St. George’s Chapel, Windsor - no Westminster Abbey for a mere fifth (soon to be sixth) in line to the throne! However, almost as soon as Saturday the 19th of May was announced as the chosen date, the tabloids began to circle and scream “OWN GOAL!” as it was revealed that this was also the date of the FA Cup, Britain’s favourite footie fixture. No doubt Harry and Meghan’s marriage will be one of the top stories of the year, with speculation already rife as to whether this is a chance for the Windsors to become part of the 21st century, with Prince Harry choosing a feminist as his wife or whether the name Meghan Markle will one day be considered as toxic as that of Wallis Simpson. Frankly, this is a turn up for the royal books that we’re following eagerly – for a change!

Max Beesley’s Legal Battle Now this is an interesting glimpse of the future! We’ve all become used to ambulance-chasing legal companies making a fortune out of little old ladies slipping on banana skins in supermarkets, but now it looks as though the acting profession is also getting in on the act. Max Beesley, one of the stars of SKY One’s Jamestown, is suing production company, Carnival Productions Limited to the tune of £250,000 because of a scene in which he was expected to kick through a wooden

wall. According to Beesley, the action injured his right knee to such an extent that he tore his meniscus. Apparently, the wall in question was originally supposed to have been made easy to kick through, but had not been adequately weakened and Beesley’s legal team claim that a stuntman should have been employed for the scene. Claiming that this injury could have consequences for his future, Beesley is obviously going for broke.

London Bound

I can't wait to be 'aunty Nat' again! Whilst in London, I took my girls, India and Thalia to the Little Mix concert, which was amazing. The Mixers are so talented, beautiful and their costumes were like pieces of art! We had the most fantastic night dancing along to all our favourite hits. London is magical at Christmastime, especially the beautiful lights of Harrods - of course we had to pop inside for a spot of retail therapy.

Anyone who hasn’t been to this wonderful sanctuary really should give it a go. It’s full of rescued animals, some of whom you can pick up for a little cuddle. My absolute favourite was the gorgeous honey bear - this is a great day out for children and adults.

RIP Becka and Simone

With a very saddened heart I have to tell you that our beloved Becka has lost her fight with cancer and passed away. Becka did us all proud and fought so bravely until the end, but unfortunately after contracting pneumonia she lost her battle. Another one of my friends, Simone, also passed away this month, a tragic reminder of how serious and devastating mental health issues can be. If anyone is reading this and is suffering from mental illness of any kind, then please get some help. There are many doctors who are specialists in this area or you can go to Mentalhealth.org for more information.

Bardou Christmas party Wow, what a year it’s been for Bardou! As a ‘thank you’ to my amazing team I treated them to a night out at Mosh. We had a great night with lots of giggles and memory sharing - however we did have to wait an hour and a half between courses as it was so busy there! Not great for a team of hungry stylists who had been working a very busy December! I have to say I couldn’t wish for a better team as the one I have; everyone is so talented and hard-working and they are a fabulous bunch to be around. Bardou certainly wouldn’t be what it is today without them. Now here’s to 2018!

With Christmas just around the corner what a perfect excuse to do what I do best and shop! And is there a better place than Puerto Banús to find all my favourite boutiques? I doubt it.

This televisual equivalent of a comfy pair of slippers and a mug of cocoa is surprisingly unflinching when it comes to representing the oppressive poverty of the East End in the 1960s and has also dealt with issues like interracial marriage and gay relationships so, in many ways, is far less than cosy. However, most episodes contain at least one tear-jerking moment, so bin that DVD copy of Now, Voyager and get stuck into Season Seven of CTM instead.

Britannia Calling all you fans of ancient history! This brand new 10-part drama is set in 43 A.D. and follows the fortunes of the Roman army as it moves to crush the Celts. Not that this series (which has apparently already been green-lit for a further run) sounds as though it has been grounded too much in actual historical reality. Quite frankly it sounds like the fever dream of an over-imaginative screenwriter, with the country being run by rogue Druids, but with the excellent David Morrissey being signed up to play Roman General Aulus Plautius, it’s bound to be worth watching.

Talking about post-Christmas feel-good programmes, Death in Paradise is just what the doctor ordered as a sure-fire cure for Seasonal Affective Disorder. With the likeable Ardal O’Hanlon taking over from Kris Marshall in the chief investigator’s role and the usual host of easily recognisable guest stars, this popular Agatha Christie and Columbo influenced series is pure entertainment, with the seemingly impossible murders solved at the last minute by a burst of inspiration and ingenuity. A generous side order of humour is provided by Danny JohnJules as the blustering police officer, Dwayne Myers and Don Warrington as the pompous Commissioner Selwyn Patterson. Whether you spend every episode trying to work out whodunnit or are content to sit back and enjoy the scenery of Saint Marie (filming actually takes place on Guadaloupe), this is a ‘winter warmer’ in every sense of the phrase!

Things We Might See in 2018

With Artificial Intelligence (AI) and 3D printing entering the mainstream, we thought we’d take a look at some of the futuristic things that might be coming our way in 2018. Some of them might sound completely bonkers, with little chance of ever becoming a reality, but then some of us thought that books would always be made from paper, and we got that wrong. Although, there is one thing we will definitely see and that is a new style restaurant venue in Marbella.

Plastic Pets

We have had digital pets in the form of Tamagotchi and Pokemon, but now we are being promised robotic cats and dogs. Apparently these are already being used for therapeutic purposes in various countries, but what effect would replacing our flesh and blood pets with robots have on us humans? Sony has already manufactured the Aibo. It’s the perfect family dog: it is attentive and engages eagerly with its owners, and is happy to follow wherever you go. It never makes a mess in the house. It sings and dances on request, and even greets you with a pleasant “good morning.” It is made of metal and plastic though, so it isn’t very cuddly. Amazingly, people really connect with this robot pet, even though it isn’t alive. “It’s a very interesting question, and the research on very young children suggests that it’s not a learned behavior,” said Gail Melson, a psychologist and Professor Emerita at Purdue University, who has studied human-robot interactions and added, “while we haven’t identified a brain mechanism for this anthropomorphism, we can speculate that there’s an evolutionary basis to the bond.”

AI Music

This will be distressing news for many people and it has the potential to generate a serious debate. An artificial intelligence (AI) has produced a five-track black metal album titled "Coditany of Timeness." The songs were produced by training a neural network with Krallice's 2011 record Diotima, according to Futurism.com. The AI-produced is ‘black metal’ that “shreds as fiercely as music produced by humans,” reports Brad Jones and is the product of a project undertaken by CJ Carr and Zack Zukowski. Even the track titles have been generated by an algorithm and include Wisdom Trippin’ and Timension. These are not quite as whacky as one might expect from an ‘algorithm’, but then even AI needs some human input. The project leaders

produced the music by feeding an album called Diotima by Krallice into a neural network. Songs were broken down into short chunks, and the system was asked to project how the next section of the track would sound, before being told whether or not its prediction was correct – common methodology for teaching an artificial intelligence how to operate. Apparently, the first tracks were “grotesque, according to CJ Carr, however, it became more sophisticated thanks to a process that saw as many as five million guesses at how a black metal song should sound made over the course of three days. Music is not the only art form to get AI attention; they have written scary stories, designed Halloween costumes and created paintings. Will AI be an X Factor contestant – never say never!

Printed Pills

You can produce a functioning gun with a 3D printer, and now Big Pharma is planning to print your pills. Yes, really! Apparently laboratories and the standard methods of producing medication are so archaic they need an overhaul. And let’s face it, it is a massive market that is growing and growing. What is more, it has an incredible consumer-fuelled cash flow and lots of interested investors who are keen to get behind any innovations. Hence the “Chemputer”, which is a 3D printer for pharmaceuticals. Created by Professor Lee Cronin of Glasgow University the Chemputer is commonly referred to by those in the field as “the universal chemistry set”, and synthesises drugs via inputting formulaic quantities of carbons, hydrogen, oxygen and other elements to produce almost any and every prescription drug on the market today. According to Quantum Run, the

Chemputer will meet the needs of an increasingly customised approach to dispensing medicine, which is one of the major trends in digital health care. Its benefits include the removal of human error, which is the selling point its marketers use, and they are sure that although the human touch will be removed, there will be better patient satisfaction.

The Smart Scooter

Driverless cars and even flying cars aren’t the only futuristic form of transport. The BMW Motorrad concept brings you a scooter that plans your route and suggests music. It’s electric of course, and is operated via two screens: the black screen between the handlebars shows navigation, battery information, and speed. And, secondary information, like music, is displayed on the larger touchscreen below the handlebars. The scooter takes information from the driver’s calendar to provide directions to their next destination and a secret compartment for luggage. However, get this – the driver has to wear a special, connected jacket to open this compartment, because when the driver waves his arms about in front of the luggage compartment, a stitch on the jacket is the key that unlocks it. So if you see a person waving their arms about in front of a scooter, you’ll know what they are doing.

And even Marbella will have something completely new for 2018. Breathe is a multi-faceted gastronomic concept dedicated to connecting people with the natural environment and fresh-thinking gastronomy. How do you ‘mine Bitcoins? This is the tricky bit unless you’re a coder, cryptographer or general computer nerd. But, we can think about it like this. When more Euros are needed, a government prints them. Well, Bitcoins aren’t physical coins, so they have to be produced another way and that is by mining them on the blockkchain. Computers around the world compete to discover Bitcoin – a bit like looking for gold deposits -- except that these computers use specifically written mining software to find them. When a block of transactions is created, miners put it through a process. They take the information in the block, and apply a mathematical formula to it, turning it into something else. That something else is a seemingly random sequence of letters and numbers known as a hash. Every time someone successfully creates a hash, they get a reward of 25 bitcoins, the blockchain is updated, and everyone on the network hears about it. That’s the incentive to keep mining, and keep the transactions working. It all comes down to

building blocks on a chain that are composed of transactions or ‘hashes’. That’s about as simple as I can make it.

The cost of mining Becoming a miner might sound lucrative, but beware, it takes an amazing amount of electricity to run the computer mining software; according to data released in November 2017, the Bitcoin mining network use more electricity in a year than the whole of Ireland. At those levels of electricity consumption, each individual Bitcoin transaction uses almost 300KWh of electricity – enough to boil around 36,000 kettles full of water. Imagine that Endesa bill! But crypto currencies are more environmentally friendly. However, having said that, I have just spotted an article about the fact the crypto currencies have a lower environmental impact than fiat currencies. In 2013, Coinbase, a leading Bitcoin exchange and payment processor, reported selling US$1 million worth of Bitcoins in a single month at over $22 per Bitcoin. By 2017, Coinbase had over 12 million users and one million of those

joined in October 2017. Indeed all the exchanges have been swamped with new members anxious to get their hands on Bitcoins in the effort to make some money.

Is it a bubble? The non-believers say that is a bubble comparable to the ‘tulip fever’ witnessed in the Netherlands in the 1600s, or the dotcom bubble of the late 90s/ early 2000s. $15,000 - $20,000. You can see why people are excited! Bitcoin is also secure. Its encryption and decentralisation guarantee this. And, if you store Bitcoin in a specially constructed ‘vault’, rather than an exchange, it cannot be hacked. Another benefit of cryptocurrencies is that they coexist with other forms of money used for transactions, so you can relate the value of your Bitcoins to euros, dollars or pounds. Bitcoin is not in a bubble. Instead, people are using it to park their savings, or create ‘virtual earnings’ without the interference of the central banks.

With so many people travelling to the UK from the Costa del Sol every year to visit family and friends, it’s tempting to combine these trips with a short holiday to see some more of the country.

If you are thinking of extending your knowledge of what Britain has to offer, then here are some suggestions of where you might like to unwind for a few days in 2018.

West, where Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows were filmed. In fact, these days the whole county is a Hollywood favourite. If your budget is less than infinite and you’re looking for a holiday location that has yet to develop the chi-chi reputation and high prices of Cornwall, then Pembrokeshire is most definitely for you. Why not take a trip to the county’s only city, St. David’s, with its population of less than 2,000 and its magnificent cathedral? Narberth is also well worth visiting for its wide range of

boutique shops and friendly ambience. Fans of castles will also be delighted with Pembrokeshire – don’t miss the magnificence of Pembroke Castle or the bijou charm of Manorbier, while Carew Castle is also a very picturesque proposition. Photographers will find plenty of opportunities to show off their skills, especially when walking the famous Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. If you’re planning a Welsh holiday, then this small but perfectly-formed county really has it all.

1. Belfast And The Giant’s Causeway.

If you’re of a certain vintage you will recall the images of Belfast during the so-called troubles, when it would hardly have seemed like a suitable place for a short break. However, fast forward a couple of decades and this formerly shellshocked but now vibrant city has enjoyed something of a facelift. Now it attracts visitors from around the world, who revel in its fascinating history and enjoy the beautiful scenery just outside the city limits. There is plenty to see and do in this part of Northern Ireland, from visiting Titanic Belfast and Crumlin Road Gaol (a lot more interesting and engaging than it sounds!) to touring the area surrounding the Giant’s Causeway, which is also where some of the key scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed. In fact, the Giant’s Causeway is a movie star in its own right; a miracle of geology with its 40,000 interlocking basalt columns and surrounded by more folklore than you can shake a stick at, it is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern Ireland.

2. Pembrokeshire

This is a bit of a newcomer on the staycation scene, although it has been attracting regular visitors for decades. Its unique combination of breath-taking coastal scenery, charming seaside towns and surfing potential is a winner. You can enjoy the ambience of small towns like Tenby and Saundersfoot with their range of friendly cafés, restaurants and gift shops and then spend a few hours catching the waves on pristine beaches like Freshwater

3. Guernsey

Often considered the bridesmaid to the bridal glory of Jersey, this jewel of the Channel Islands is about to have its own moment in the sun with the upcoming release of a new movie. Based on the historical novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society has been directed by Mike Newell and stars Lily James, Matthew Goode, Jessica Brown Findlay, Michiel Huisman, Katherine Parkinson and Penelope Wilton and is sure to attract record numbers of visitors to this beautiful island. Despite the grim subject matter, which concerns the Nazi occupation of Guernsey during the Second World War, there is nothing quite like a movie to boost tourist numbers, as the inhabitants of Cephalonia discovered after the release of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Lovers of history will also have plenty to amuse and divert them.

4. Isle of Skye

If you don’t harbour an abiding love of Scotland or a deep desire to visit, you have no heart! Lovers of wild scenery will be in heaven on the Isle of Skye, while exponents of extreme sports will also feel right at home. Skye is also a great place to visit if you enjoy music, since it has a strong folk tradition; the natural, windswept beauty of this largest and northernmost island in the Inner Hebrides also means that it has starred in some Hollywood movies, the opening of Flash Gordon, Stardust (starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer) and Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. There are some places that everyone should try to visit – don’t miss the famous Old Man of Storr, the Fairy Pools and the raw majesty of the Cuillin. The Isle of Skye has long been a magnet for climbers and kayakers, but even if you’re a couch potato at heart you could just take a drive around and soak up some of the most overwhelming scenery in Britain.

5. Ashbourne As our working lives increasingly revolve sitting behind a desk, a growing demand for walking and activity holidays has arisen. This has been good news for places such as Ashbourne in Derbyshire, which has witnessed a massive tourist boom over the past few years and is now seen as a key destination for travellers whose idea of a good time is to lace up their walking boots, yomp over some spectacular countryside

and enjoy being in the open air after months cooped up in a city office. The best time to visit Ashbourne is said to be April, May and July, although hardy souls tend to turn up around the year to soak up the ambience of this attractive little Peak District town. Accommodation is plentiful and there is a wide range of decent restaurants from which to choose. All in all, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a short break.

Evershot Not for nothing is Dorset known as one of the most beautiful counties in the UK, with its fabulous Jurassic Coast and popular seaside locations such as Bournemouth and Poole, with its swanky suburb of Sandbanks where a house could set you back a cool few million. Travel further inland however (on B-roads mind you – motorways don’t exist in Dorset!) and prepare to be beguiled by Thomas Hardy country, of which the north-west village of Evershot forms a very important part. If you happen to be a keen reader then this is the perfect excuse to rediscover Tess of the d’Urbervilles, in which Evershot

appears as Evershead. A mere 20 miles away, the characterful village of Marnhull, near Sturminster Newton, appears as Marlott in the same novel. Visitors to Evershot will notice Tess Cottage, a dwelling that has been named after the novel’s heroine. Dorset is a picture all year round, but during the spring and summer it is especially beautiful.

Another excellent holiday destination for keen walkers, this Perthshire town has plenty of other factors to recommend it. Regular visitors reckon that the months of April, August and November are the best times to book a B&B or hotel here, but January is typically the cheapest time and Scotland in the winter has a charm of its own. Most famously Beatrix Potter completed an early draft of what was to be The Tale of Peter Rabbit while staying at Eastwood House in the town, no doubt inspired by the fabulously rural scenery. Our recommendation is to follow the River Tay and take the circular walk round to the neighbouring town of Birnam, which is namechecked in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. If you’re happier in a car than on foot, then there is plenty to see in the surrounding area; Scotland is reliably beautiful and historically fascinating.

On the subject of old favourites, Cornwall is still one of the top seaside destinations in the UK, despite a strong challenge from Pembrokeshire which shares a similar wild coastline and heritage. Of course, Padstow with its fascinating local customs such as May’s ‘Obby ‘Oss Festival and fabulous fish restaurants owned and run by celebrity chefs Rick Stein (the town is popularly known as Padstein these days) and Paul Ainsworth, is especially popular

with tourists but the whole county is an old favourite. Other Cornish destinations that are highly recommended – and predicted to be tourist hotspots this year – are the picturesque fishing port of Looe, Carbis Bay near the artistic settlement of St. Ives and the northern seaside town of Bude. No doubt old favourites such as the beautiful village of Port Isaac (where ITV’s popular series Doc Martin is set) will continue to feature strongly in 2018.

This part of Britain is one of the country’s most popular tourist traps and no wonder. This year it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which can only add to its tourist appeal. The main problem attached to visiting this gorgeous area is arriving at a time when the presence of other people isn’t quite so overwhelming. The experience of visiting during bank holidays is rather like braving London’s Oxford Street on Christmas Eve, so do try to book your accommodation when school is in full swing and there is more chance of being able to enjoy everything the Lake District has to offer in a reasonable amount of peace. Wherever you roam you can’t go wrong, since this beauty spot consists of more than 2,000 square kilometres of natural wonders, including Lake Windermere (the largest body of water in England) and Scafell Pike (the highest mountain in England). Don’t forget your walking boots and a large slab of Kendal mint cake and prepare to enjoy some of the finest scenery in Britain – no, make that the world.

When we do, we experience greater emotional stability within ourselves and we can face the challenges of life much better. So what happens when you or your partner do not have a ‘secure attachment style’, i.e. you’re high in ‘attachment anxiety’ or ‘attachment avoidance’? If you are currently attachment anxious, you are more likely to be hyper-vigilant all the time, detecting and responding to social and emotional cues from your partner and your joint environment, constantly scanning to ensure you’re ‘safe’ within your relationship. The likelihood of someone with attachment anxiety overreacting to something their partner has or hasn’t done is higher than in those who are securely attached. This can happen because they tend to have self-doubt which can skew their perception of reality towards the negative and because they are

frequently in search of reassurance; reassurance that they don’t need to be anxious. This can become a vicious circle for those who have anxious attachment styles and in my experience, even when clients are aware of their anxious attachment style, they can find it difficult to break the pattern, hence the reason for seeking professional help. If you are currently attachment avoidant, you are more likely to remain seemingly aloof, keeping a ‘safe’ emotional distance between you and your partner. Doing so is a form of self-defence based on damage limitation because if you’re not that close to someone, you won’t be too vulnerable to emotional pain. This translates to a barrier between you and your partner, one that ensures your closeness will always be limited.

Riding A Romantic Roller Coaster?

So how do you or your partner currently being attachment anxious or attachment avoidant impact on how you perceive the quality of your relationship and does your perception of relationship quality fluctuate from day-to-day or does it remain fairly constant? Research by Cooper et al. (2017) set out to answer these questions and they found a number of patterns in the data to add to the romantic attachment styles literature: Firstly, for both men and women, attachment avoidance was linked with decreased levels of relationship quality. Secondly, when the woman had attachment anxiety, both she

Thirdly, women’s attachment avoidance did not result in daily fluctuations in their partner’s perception of relationship quality. Fourthly, greater conflict was experienced in relationships where one partner was high in attachment anxiety. The results suggest that attachment anxious women are more likely to seek out emotional and social cues from their partner and within their relationship environment which makes them more predisposed to creating unnecessary conflict and experiencing inner turmoil. On the other hand, when men are attachment anxious, women likely use such emotional and social cues to understand and respond to their anxious partner’s needs. For male partners of women high in attachment anxiety, it seems they are more drawn in by and become reactive to the conflict created by the anxious female partner rather than being responsive to their female partner’s needs for reassurance. This may be because the men are not as attuned to the emotional cues (and needs) of others in the way that women tend to be. Therefore, the goal for

these couples is to find ways for the male partner to reassure the attachment anxious female partner to help her to become securely attached and to find ways for the attachment anxious female partner to better detect, understand and regulate her relationship anxiety. Of course, the latter is the goal for anxiously attached male partners, too.

Remember this: people’s attachment styles change throughout their lifetimes so you have the ability to change your current attachment style to become securely attached. It’s all about taking the reins instead of being on auto-pilot.

ACHIEVING YOUR IDEAL BODY SHAPE PT.4

s a continuation from last month’s tips I’m sticking with the lower body and focusing on some ideas to help develop one of the biggest muscle groups in the body – the gluteals (butt muscles) or glutes for short. Building a strong set of glutes will not only ensure you fill out that new pair of jeans, they also help to boost your athletic performance and decrease your risk of injury.

Many of the lower body exercises commonly used in resistance training programs (squats, deadlifts, lunges etc) will incorporate the glutes to varying extents. The following suggestions all have an emphasis on maximising the contribution of the glutes during the exercise to optimise the gains for this area.

• The barbell hip thrust : this can be considered the king of glute building exercises. Tension in the glutes can be felt throughout the whole movement and muscle activation has been found to reach higher levels when compared to other glute focused exercises. Set up sitting on the ground with your upper back resting against a bench so it runs longways across your back. With your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, rest a barbell across your hips (use a pad on the bar for comfort). Push down with your feet with most of the pressure through the heels and drive your hips to the ceiling. As you do so your upper back should pivot on the bench, resting on it at the top of the movement. Squeeze the glutes as you reach full hip extension and be mindful not to arch the lower back. Keep your eyeline towards the hips so your chin is close to the chest when the hips are up. Lower the hips down to the ground under control before repeating the next rep. • The cable pull- through : This is one of the more underrated glute exercises, but it provides a great hit on the area when performed correctly. It maximally loads the hips closer to their extended position and as the body is working against forces that want to flex your hips, it’s a great back-friendly way to work on your hip hinge pattern needed for exercises like deadlifts. Set up a cable column so the pulley is about a foot from the floor. Using a rope attachment, stand facing away from the column with the cable between your legs and the end of the rope in each hand

(your hands should be resting just on the inside of the upper thighs). Take a few steps out to put the cable on tension. Keeping a straight back, sit back into your hips and bend the knees slightly until your upper body is parallel to the floor (this should feel like the cable is pulling you backwards and your weight is shifting into your heels). Next, drive your hips forward to come back to a standing position, squeezing the glutes hard as you get to full hip extension. You don’t need to pull with the arms just hold on and let the movement come from the hips. • The single leg hip thrust : this is basically the same movement and set up as the barbell hip thrust except there’s no barbell and you only use one leg at a time. Don’t let using just bodyweight fool you into thinking this is an easy exercise, as soon as you go one leg the movement becomes much more challenging.

Bonus Nutritional Tip If maximising mus cle growth is the goal, then you ca n’t afford to be a carbophobe. Your body needs to be well fuelled to tra in hard, so you ca n grow muscle. It’s not completely cle ar how much carboh ydrate is needed to maximise exercis e induced muscle growth but avoid ing them will be to your detriment. A reasonable guide to start with is 3gram s of carbohydrate per kilogram of body weight per day. Aim to consume mostly wh ole food sources from foods like vegeta bles, wild rice, len tils , quinoa and oats.

To make sure you keep good form, keep the heel down on the grounded leg and pull the free leg into your chest with your hands, holding it there during the set. This will make it harder to cheat range of motion by over-extending your lower back. This variation allows you to work on evening out any strength differences between your left and right side and because it tends to work best unloaded you can go for higher repetitions and use it towards the end of your workout. If you struggle for time you can pair these exercises with the quad session from last month to build one workout, alternating between a quad and a glute exercise. Alternatively, if you have time to train more frequently you can do them as separate sessions.

For the first two exercises, you can use the same rep and set scheme as previously shown: Week 1 - 3x8 (72reps/session, 144reps/week), Week 2 - 3x 10 (90reps/session, 180reps/week), Week 3 – 3x12 (108reps/session, 216reps/week), Week 4 (deload week), 2x10 (60reps/session, 120reps/week). Then repeat the cycle for next four weeks aiming to add small increases to the weights used (don’t miss any reps though!) Aim to include these exercises into your training schedule twice each week. For the single leg hip thrusts complete 2-3 sets of 12-15 reps at the end of your leg session.

r o F e m i T Jonathan starts the New Year by taking a good look at himself and making positive changes in his work and personal life. In this issue he also introduces the latest members of TEAM REFLECTIONS and gives us the low down on the Christmas work party madness.

My New Year’s resolution for 2018 is to be nicer to myself. In the words of the great Whitney Houston, “Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all”. I am currently borderline homicidal and it’s not just me who feels this way. I think a lot of people need to address the issue of being far too obsessed with the needs of others, which is ultimately detrimental to ourselves. Having spent more than a couple of years in this industry, it becomes very easy to lose sight of yourself when attempting to please other people (no, I am not going for a sainthood – well, not just yet anyway!) I believe part of the key to success in hairdressing is giving a damn about what you are doing, and this usually entails getting involved with the lives of the people we mix with on a daily basis.

When we encounter up to 30 people a day, do the maths, that’s a lot of involvement. I have mentioned before that I was once told by a spiritual friend that certain people absorb the energy of others and she advised me to take a shower after working around any negativity. Suffice to say, if I followed this directive I’d have skin like a prune. All this being said, I believe it is a valuable life skill to have the ability to listen, to absorb it and then examine your feelings. You need to be able to differentiate which feelings are yours and which were left behind by the last punter. With this in mind, I would like to face 2018 as a bit less of an emotional sponge and more protected. Currently, if you decided to wring me out you wouldn't want to know what kind of filth would pour out.

I have a feeling that this old crown may be knocked off very soon. Speaking of new additions, it is great to welcome Paul MacFarlane back into the fold. After a little sabbatical he has returned from backpacking around Puerto Banús. He has come back home, because that’s where the heart is. We are delighted also to announce that he will be starting his own hair column in the next issue of Confeti Magazine. With his expertise in bridal hair, I couldn’t think of a better person. Please don’t worry I am not going to be sectioned (though it would be nice to have a little break for a while and some peace and quiet). The fact that I am writing about this issue means that, according to my doctor, I am not quite as bonkers as I thought I was. In fact, if I look around the world we live in I am probably one of the sanest beings, which should worry everyone. Jesus wept. I guess it’s always been a double-edged sword. The ability to get on with a client can also mean you can empathise a little

too much. It’s draining. If they do decide to name a day after me, I would like to be consulted first. I am thinking I would like Saint Jonathan’s Day to be in July as we don’t have a bank holiday during that month and I think it would help break up the summer for me. Hmm…St Jonathans Day. AN ALL-NIGHTER Our Christmas work do was a double celebration. Firstly, Nadar managed to return ON TIME from his latest trip. Secondly, our party coincided with the Death Star’s annual festive bash, so as expected there was carnage on a military scale. It’s either a feast or a famine with me. I’ve either got agoraphobia or you can’t get me in. It’s still to be decided which of us has been barred from La Sala but, don’t worry, the Death Star and I are on it and trying to buy our way back in. Some have suggested that this double booking was arranged on purpose. They will never prove it! An exceedingly luxurious Christmas party at the Puente Romano. The Gatsby-themed event was held in the Salon Andalusia and every guest arrived in Jazz Age attire that was accentuated by the 20s touch supplied by Classic Cars Marbella. This is the second year that the hotel has hosted a Gatsby Christmas Party and it continues to be a success.

The night began with a welcome cocktail, followed by four-course dinner designed by executive chef Thomas Stork, drinks and dancing. It was clear that the guests, who consisted of friends, colleagues and families all thought it was amazing.

THE BENTAYGA IS FAR MORE THAN JUST A TALLER BENTLEY

o matter what you might think of SUVs, a huge number of car buyers seem besotted with the idea of sitting higher up and enjoying the versatility of an estate car in a vehicle with offroad capability. This has resulted in SUVs becoming the fastest growing segment of the car industry in recent years. In fact it has got to the point where in an effort to fill every possible niche in the SUV firmament, car manufacturers are now busy creating SUV models at both ends of the size and price spectrum. Thus, while mainstream European, Japanese and Korean carmakers add smaller, more city friendly lifestyle vehicles at the bottom end of the market, the luxury marques are expanding into this segment at the top.

IN RECENT YEARS, CARMAKERS HAVE BEEN BREAKING A FEW TABOOS IN THE INTEREST OF MARKET SHARE, AND ONE OF THESE IS SPORTING MARQUES LIKE PORSCHE ADOPTING DIESEL POWER FOR THEIR SUV AND SALOON MODELS. closely related to the four-door saloons from Crewe than the new Continental GT, it offers four or five people a very high level of comfort over distance. It also has up-to-date telematics with a large touchscreen controlling the infotainment system and other functions.

Until recently, this would have described the battle between Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche against the establishment as represented by Range Rover. But now we are seeing previously unimaginable challenges from the likes of Aston Martin, Bentley, Lamborghini, and even Rolls-Royce, in a newly created niche above this. While the concept cars from Aston Martin and the soon to be launched Lamborghini Urus promise relatively swoopy, low-slung vehicles in keeping with the sporting image of these brands, the Bentley and the forthcoming RollsRoyce SUV present a more formal and imposing presence in league with their elevated status. It is thus no surprise that the Bentayga carries all the detail styling cues of current Bentley models in a package that rivals the Audi Q7 and Mercedes GLS in terms of sheer physical size. Nobody I met who commented on the Bentayga’s external appearance thinks it is attractive, but then no SUV sets out to be a beauty queen. By the same token nobody can say that the Bentagya is not instantly identifiable as a Bentley, and its presence and ‘Bentleyness’ are precisely the qualities that endow it with the gravitas required in this rarefied strata. The flipside of the coin is the plush and exquisitely crafted interior that is admired by all and sundry. A traditional looking Bentley cabin whose design is more

compromising the 431 Litre boot space too much. In the five-seat version without the reclining seat feature the boot volume is 484 litres. With the seats folded flat in either variant the maximum cargo volume becomes 1,774 litres, which is equivalent to a large estate car. In recent years, carmakers have been breaking a few taboos in the interest of market share, and one of these is sporting marques like Porsche adopting diesel power for their SUV and saloon models.

TORQUE TALK

Providing it is refined enough a powerful, torque-rich turbo-diesel is a natural partner for a big, heavy SUV, even if it makes the Bentayga V8 diesel 32kg heavier than its W12 petrol-engined sister. The diesel has bespoke control software for its air suspension, active damping and active anti-roll bars aimed at giving it the slightly softer character that Bentley thinks will best suit its clientele. The VW Group’s ‘triple charged’ 4.0 litre V8, which uses its 48-volt electrical system to provide initial boost while the two mechanical turbochargers spool up is very refined indeed and offers crisp throttle response and copious torque from just off idle. It is even quite sporty sounding when working hard. As you would expect, the diesel engine is far more efficient, returning an average fuel consumption of just 8.0 L/100km (35.3 mpg), versus 13.1 L/100km (21.6 mpg) for the W12 petrol version. And so the first heavy oil burning model in the illustrious history of the Bentley marque arrives with minimal downside in real world performance, but a substantial saving of around £26,000 in the UK and a huge advantage at the fuel pumps. Also used in the Audi Q7 and Cayenne S, this turbo-diesel has been suitably fettled by the Bentley engineers and ends up a perfect match for their super luxury offroader. It does all this with exactly the same silky smooth eight-speed automatic as the W12 version.

TORQUE TALK

From the well insulated cabin, which benefits from intelligent engine mounts and more engine bay and transmission tunnel soundproofing than the petrol version, there is no inkling at all that a compressionignition motor resides under the long prow. Waftability comes from torque, and the 435 hp V8 diesel provides a tidal wave of torque from low down in its rev band. With a whopping 900 Nm, its peak twist is identical to that produced by the 608 hp, 6.0-litre W12 petrol engine, but it arrives at just 1,000rpm, 350rpm lower down in the rev band. While diesels tend not to be as accelerative as similarly powerful petrol engines against the stopwatch, the 2.5 tonne plus Bentayga diesel uses its grunt to put up a pretty convincing show of force with a 0-100km/h time of 4.8 sec, versus 4.1 sec for the petrol version. Bentley has a thing about top speed, and the original GT Coupe of 2006 was able to crack 200mph from day one. With a 300 km/h (187mph) Vmax, the W12-powered Bentayga is the fastest production SUV, while the 270 km/h (168mph) top speed of the Diesel version is sufficient for it to float past the many performance cars that are electronically limited to 250km/h.

AS YOU WOULD EXPECT, THE DIESEL ENGINE IS FAR MORE EFFICIENT, RETURNING AN AVERAGE FUEL CONSUMPTION OF JUST 8.0 L/100KM (35.3 MPG), VERSUS 13.1 L/100KM (21.6 MPG) FOR THE W12 PETROL VERSION.

IN COMPARISON THE BENTLEY’S INTERIOR EXHIBITS AN ACUTE LACK OF PLASTIC, AND SURFACES ARE COVERED IN LEATHER AND WOOD.

To wit, even the Bentayga Diesel has enough raw performance to give many junior league supercars a very hard time, both away from the stoplights as well as on straight-line autobahn speed. In reality, while the Bentayga has all this effortless speed capability, it is unlikely that the vast majority of owners outside of Germany will ever use more than half of it. And as for exploring its off-road abilities, getting those plush carpets muddy would be a major faux pas. If you are already a Bentley driver, the Bentayga’s higher, more commanding driving position takes a while to come to terms with. If you are coming from a top spec Range Rover Autobiography, whose price peaks where that of the W12 petrol Bentley begins, you will notice a whole different level of fit and finish. For starters the Bentley cabin architecture looks and feels far more bespoke. Where the Range Rover has plenty of leather, it is of a cheaper grade, and the overall impression is still one of a mass-produced product, albeit quite a good one. In comparison the Bentley’s interior exhibits an acute lack of plastic, and surfaces are covered in leather and wood. Consider the difference as being akin to an off-thepeg Armani suit versus a bespoke Savile Row one, a distinction that imparts a sense of calm and sense of well being to the driver and his lucky passengers. Only the Italians have a one-word description for this sprezzatura - the art of effortless superiority. Authenticity is important here, and the chromed buttons and traditional Bentley organ stop vent controls are cold to the touch as only real metal can be. Even the gearshift lever looks and feels like it has been machined from a solid billet of metal, which it in fact has.

The only gripe I have is an ergonomic one. When you hold the gearshift lever and depress the Bentley ‘B’ logo on top to release the locking mechanism, you can sometimes inadvertently engage the ‘P’ Park button. Although this is slightly recessed, it is still close enough to the surface to be brushed by the fleshy part of the palm below your thumb known as the thenar eminence in medical anatomy. The world outside feels remote from behind the wheel of the Bentayga. The double-glazing keeps extraneous noise at bay, while mechanical sounds clearly also know their place here. A lot of attention has been paid to road noise, and despite the 21-inch diameter wheels and low profile tyres, NVH suppression is most impressive, and the well-calibrated air suspension ensures that the Bentayga glides along effortlessly. The rotary control ring around the Start/ Stop button controls the various ride, handling, traction, and stability control modes, which include Comfort, Sport, Custom, Snow, Sand, Forest and Track.

There is also a ‘Bentley mode’, which the engineers have judged as optimum for normal driving. We found this preferable to Comfort because of its improved body control. Sport mode comes into it’s own if you pick up the pace, and it is then that you find out just how flat this huge car stays in corners when pressing on. If the Bentayga has one dynamic handicap in daily use it is the lack of rear steering as an option. here can be little doubt but that English is one of the greatest languages in the world, if not THE greatest. Whether you want to express yourself clearly, or obfuscate the simplest proposition, it is ideal. For this reason it is a wonderful tool to hide even the most profound put-down, as when a Judge remarked to Counsel after a somewhat convoluted argument, “I am no wiser!”, the prompt rejoinder came “Indeed not, my lord, but you are better informed!”

Sometimes the words can conceal an opinion purposely designed to be obscure to avoid offence. To this day nobody is entirely certain as to what the great Dr Samuel Johnson meant when he said, after eating a plate of scotch broth, “I care not when I shall eat it again!” His hostess took it as a compliment. It is also capable of expressing the most profound thoughts in the simplest of terms. I well recall when, as a “worker priest” and qualified chef, I headed up a catering college.

As I came upon two young ladies making asparagus soup I remarked in what I conceived to be a jocular fashion, “You know ladies, if you eat this your wee wee smells!” As I passed on I heard one say to the other in a broad Brummy accent: “What’d ‘e say?” To which came the reply “If you eat this muck your piss stinks!” (which it does, and which can be somewhat disconcerting if one is not expecting it!) But as Clarence Darrow once remarked, “Even if you do learn to speak correct English, whom are you going to speak it to?” And I know personally that my Belgian mother, an avid reader of English literature who thereby commanded an extensive vocabulary, after many years of living in England was often still regarded as a “foreigner” on the grounds that her English was too perfect.

On another occasion I accompanied a suffragan bishop to an equally isolated church. As we arrived we noticed that the diocesan flag was flying at half mast. “Oh dear!” said the suffragan to the churchwarden as we entered, “I am so very sorry. Who has died?” “Died, my lord?” asked the churchwarden. “Indeed”, replied his lordship, “your flag is at half mast.” “Oh that!” rejoined the churchwarden comfortably, “that’s for you. Surely not?”, I replied. “Oh, you’d better! The agnostics here are terrible!” The acoustics were indeed terrible, but having made myself heard I managed to escape without actually meeting any unbelievers!

How else can one explain an answer in a SAT test on Civics given to 16 year olds? Question: “In a democracy, how important are elections?” Answer:“Elections are very important. Sex can only happen when a male gets an election”. And the student involved was not even Chinese! He would probably have sympathised with the woman who wrote indignantly: “The man next door has a large erection in the back garden, which is unsightly and dangerous”. Unfortunately, we never discovered what it was, as when the council officer arrived to inspect it, the man next door had removed it. Botheration!

Wild Atlantic Way By Eleanor McKenzie

“The Wild Atlantic Way”: it sounds romantic, and for many people, including those who call it home, it is indeed a fabulous spot on the globe. It is, in fact, a 2,500km route from Cork, a major city on Ireland’s south coast, to Donegal in the far north west of the country.

t takes you along West Cork and Kerry’s coast, past Tralee and into County Clare, where the Cliffs of Moher make you feel as if Ireland is on the edge of the world and you might drop off. After that you’re off to Galway and Connemara, then into Sligo and, finally, into Donegal. And, when you stand on the coast of Donegal, looking west from cliffs of Sliabh Liag, it is somehow awe-inspiring to think that the huge expanse of the Atlantic is all there is between Ireland and America. This area is increasingly becoming home to a community of artists, a substantial number of them women,

who find Ireland’s ‘wild west’ the perfect place to find their creative voice. It’s interesting that most of them are “blowins,” which means people who are not locals; indeed a few of them are not even Irish. The diversity of work that is being produced, prompted Society Marbella to select two of the women artists working in Donegal and Sligo, as a showcase for the art coming out of a corner of the world that is far removed from the better known artist hubs in major cities.

Liz

lives on Cruit Island with her husband Malachy Doyle, who is an acclaimed children’s book author. The island is linked to the mainland by a bridge, which must surely add an extra sense of separation from the world. I asked Liz some questions about her work, what inspires her and which artists and movements she considers important influences.

“

Liz is a tireless worker, who has the canny knack of sharing her work in progress on social media: indeed, artist’s are not renowned for promoting their work on Facebook, especially more mature ones, but Liz’s digital marketing skills are almost as advanced as her artistic ones. I was drawn to Donegal through family connections and over the last few years have come to love it as my home. It is a wild, windy, rugged, rocky place and it is the texture of the place that suits my work so well. I think most painters have a sensitivity to ‘nature’, and a need for physical and emotional space to connect with the natural environment. There are hardly any people, so there is always ‘empty’ space, and yet the nature and friendliness of the small population is a great strength. You can be alone, but never lonely because people always want to help. Everywhere I look around me has contrasts and colours that jump out at me: the fantastic pink granite rocks encrusted with yellow and pale grey/green lichen and the golden reeds that all change colour with the shifting light that penetrates through the ever present clouds.

I love Liz’s abstract style and her colour palette is always filled with a sense of exuberance and joy. So, I’m curious to see who she cites as her most important influences. There’s a quite a list of influences, but you can see the thread of ‘colour’ and innovative process that links them all.

worked, why the Master’s work was so successful. I also want to know how she approaches her work. Abstraction is more complex than figurative work, and although I can see she uses the landscape around her as the foundation, I’m fascinated by how she extracts colour and some sense of form. Liz says: I love colour and see the world and make my work with more reference to colour, tone, contrast and texture than to form or representation. However, the form ,in terms of representation of what I see is not really important. So rather than saying what’s NOT important, I’ll try and explain what IS! I don’t set out to make an image of what I see. I set out to make a painting, and the painting grows from the layers I lay down, the colours build, contrast and form a composition. What I have seen and what I feel influences the choices I make, but the choices I make also come from what I’ve just laid down. I am TRYING to leave representation behind completely, and to paint purely abstract images, with composition and tone contrasts, and forms that have relevance to each other.

(OF COURSE!) for the scale, colour, emotional content/ context and bravery. She also like The Fauvists and ‘’Die Blaue Reiter’ groups in Germany for using ‘wrong’ colours, such as the blue horses. Others she mentions, include Antonio Tapies, Cy Twombly and Gerhard Richter. Liz admires their ‘mark making’ techniques, and this is something that plays an important role in Liz’s work. Picasso is another master who get a special mention: I was bowled over by his series of about 30 paintings analysing Velazquez’s ‘Las Menina’s. Picasso was trying to work out how the composition

She illustrates how she works by using her ‘Orchids series as an example. I saw a field with red/ purple orchids. Triangular little pointy shapes dotted about all over the field. Lots of other small flowers, yellows, creams, pinks. I don’t THINK, about them, so much as SEE the contrast of the purple/ green, the purple/ yellow, the green/blue. I come back to the studio and want to paint the contrasts, the tiny shapes, the rarity and the vulnerability of these tiny flowers in this big, wide space. I paint with cold wax medium, which means I can build up many layers one on top of the other, without waiting, and the BOTTOM layers can be revealed with solvent and / or scraping to show a strong contrast with the later layers. This CONTRAST is fundamental to my work. So the process is part of the expressing what I feel about the contrast of the colours and form of the orchids within their environment.

Her sudden transition from a Protestant home in England to a Catholic one in Ireland was challenging and she found the culture difficult to adjust to. She also arrived during the worst years of The Troubles and Sligo is close to the border country with Northern Ireland. However, in her own words, she says: The change of natural environment also came as a shock. I had left the leafy suburbs of south England for a stark, rocky, rain drenched farm on the edge of Europe. My sense of displacement was huge. However I relished the freedom to roam fields, explore my surroundings and discover my love of nature.

So the first layer of paint is a strong colour (alizarin crimson) the later layers are paler and tonally weaker (pink, green, grey, then on some of the pieces turquoise) The bright red shines through. Later I also add graphite marks and bright red powder pigment to add more accents. Liz works mostly on cradled birch panels, so I ask her why she uses this surface instead of canvas. The cold wax medium works better on a rigid surface, so panels are recommended. Also, I use a palette knife mostly and so the panel is safer, because I have often cut through canvas! The wood surface is better for the paint and wax combination because on canvas the surface can crack with the movement of the fabric, so you have to reduce the proportion of wax. And, the rigid surface is better for roller, squeegee, palette knife. Also, I really love the finished product with the thick textured matt surface of the painting, with the clean waxed, chunky (I prefer the deep 4cm edges) timber of the edge. It has been great discovering the thinking and activity behind the images that I enjoy looking at regularly, either on social media or at various gallery websites, as Liz exhibits in galleries from Dublin to Barcelona. Tina

Like Liz, is a ‘blow-in’ to the west of Ireland. She was born in Epsom, Surrey, England to Irish/ English parents, her mother’s family being the Sligo connection. They had immigrated to England in the 50’s. Her family returned to Ireland in 1970 to farm land inherited by her grandfather. Tina was six years old.

Tina still lives in Sligo, which is south of Donegal and her work is included in collections worldwide. She is a seascape painter, and of any artist I know that might remind me of JMW Turner, then it is Tina’s capturing of the Atlantic drama she lives beside in Strandhill, Co. Sligo. It is a picturesque place and Tina, like Liz, often shares photos of the day’s weather on social media, so I have an excellent sense of the raw natural beauty they are both surrounded by. The sea is a powerful force anywhere, and when you’re an islander, you have a special relationship with it, because at every edge of your existence, there it is: the sea. On the west coast of Ireland, the shores and cliffs are battered and then caressed by the Atlantic, which is a much wilder beast than the Irish Channel on Ireland’s east coast for example. Tina explains why Sligo has provided her with the perfect base for her art.

For centuries landscape artists have looked to nature to better understand the mysteries of life, our relationship with nature and the human condition. Given our current position in the 21st century with climate change, global warming and capitalism’s clamour for global resources I feel the subject matter of nature is more urgent than ever. I asked Tina about how she approaches a painting. She told me: Strandhill Peninsula and its unique Atlantic weather are the focus of my paintings. Small-scale paintings are made from direct observation; this is called ‘Plein Air’ in art terms. The information I glean from these, a gesture, a colour, or mark made in response to the conditions, will be integrated later on larger canvases. Studio paintings are not pre-planned. I use a method of laying down paint and scraping it off. This process of layering and rejecting is repeated, until I can locate and recognize the place and its weather. Essentially my paintings are an emotional response to my environment and times. And, does she find the environment of Ireland’s west coast the most conducive to expressing her emotions about the environment in our time? I’m a practical Romantic and work with what’s on my doorstep, which is The Strandhill peninsula, a small piece of land

jutting out into the northwest Atlantic. I always attempt to develop and nurture a relationship with my immediate environment.

So in answer to your question; I make no conscious decision to project anthropomorphic ideas of the elements onto my practice.

Painting has given me the means to come to terms with an environment and place that I’ve had an uneasy relationship with for many years. To draw and paint my environs ... to see it and know it ... to observe and explore has proven to be a rich and fulfilling experience. Through this process I feel at last ... This is home... And now, due to climate change, corporate greed and a lack of political will to do anything about it, it’s under threat.

Could you explain this quote a bit more? “This process of layering and rejecting is repeated until I can locate and recognize the place and its weather.”

Do you personally hold any see any connection between your work and the ancient idea of the elements having characteristics? What I want to achieve in my paintings is the mood, atmosphere and the ephemeral nature of the northwest Atlantic coast. The elemental aspect of my paintings can be read in a literal way, but my primary concern when making studio paintings is to make the paint be the thing. What I want to do is bring something of the outside in. For me to draw it is to know it. Although when I take a small canvas outside to paint, it’s about the feeling of being there and responding to the sensory experience of the elements.

As mentioned earlier I draw a lot from direct observation, but in the studio its memory and a recall of conditions I have experienced that are relied on. Sketches, notes and photographs are out of sight and I begin by placing a line of paint that serves as a horizon line, this line will shift and move as the process of constructing the painting continues. After the first placement of a potential horizon is laid I’ll follow on with placement of blocks or patches of colour and then it becomes solely about the relationship with the emerging image. I let the suggestion of a cloud or a stimulating passage of paint lead me to my next gesture, colour or mark until as I say I can locate and recognize the place and conditions. I review and reconsider painted decisions constantly. I have no idea how long a painting will take to resolve, so I have up to 7 or 8 paintings on the go at one time. anuary. Christmas is over, you have eaten about two tons of turkey, roasties and bread sauce and far too much plum pudding – so what should you do? Well, it’s no surprise, in this season of New Year’s Resolutions and good intentions, that gym membership goes off the scale. However, if competing for the best pieces of kit in a roomful of people in far better physical shape than you doesn’t appeal then there is a healthy alternative - just drop into Manuka. There are two branches of this friendly, buzzing shrine to good health: one in the perennially popular Centro Comercial La Cañada and the other on Marbella’s Paseo Maritimo, which is where we went recently to find out what good, healthy food really looks like.

The first thing you should bear in mind is not to worry – Manuka has no interest in putting its customers through some kind of culinary boot-camp. You can be as radically healthy as you like; if you decide to drop in for breakfast there are firm favourites like Eggs Benedict on the menu, but if you want to start the day with a bang then you could also opt for the Protein Porridge with Oats and Quinoa and a choice of Peanut Butter, Coconut Cream, Seeds, Banana and Seasonal Fruit. We arrived for lunch and, despite our seasonal over indulgence, were feeling very hungry. Despite it being a few minutes short of the traditional lunch hour of two o’clock the restaurant was filling up already, but we found a table outside and immediately thought what a great place this would be to visit in the summer. The first thing that we ordered were a couple of Pressed Juices, which alone should be enough to tempt the health conscious to try what the Manuka

team has to offer. We ordered a Hydrator (Mango, Cucumber, Coconut Water and Mint) and an Hawaiian Blue (Pineapple and Avocado with a beautiful deep turquoise colour thanks to the blue spirulina Algae and tastes like Piña Colada!) and can recommend them both. The flavours were deliciously intense and hit the spot instantly.

We decided to go all out for our starter and ordered the Crunchy Kale, which made for a wonderfully healthy snack – and it tasted fabulous! Who would have guessed that kale could rival traditional potato crisps as a flavourful treat? We also ordered the new Tuna Tacos, which were absolutely delicious and just the right size to be a promise of what was to come, rather than filling us up so that we were unable to enjoy what was next.

Manuka’s menu is packed with great healthy eating ideas and is constantly being developed, so we were eager to try one of the new Super Bowls, choosing the Vegan Taco Bowl with coconut sour cream and walnut chili con carne which was fantastically tasty. To accompany that we ordered one of the salads; the Ceviche with pungent lime dressing. It was not what you would normally expect but it tasted so fresh, especially on this sunny winter day. If you’re planning to visit in the summer this is something that you absolutely must try. The Manuka team has already proved itself to be far-sighted, with many vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options on the menu. These days many people are choosing not to eat meat, whether for ethical or health reasons and a restaurant like this is well placed to benefit from the inclusion of dishes which, while not surrendering one ounce of flavour, are ideal for the health nut in your life. Manuka is also a great place to visit with the family – and we do mean ‘extended family’, since pets are also very welcome. What is better than combining a delicious lunch with taking your dog for a walk and, if you have an eccentrically sociable cat, so much the better. Our biggest regret that there were so many dishes that we didn’t get around to trying, such as the Manuka Burger (100% grass-fed Wagyu Beef, Guacamole, Crispy Bacon and Brie served on a Brown Roll with Fries), the Creamy Chicken Satay with Coconut and fresh Turmeric served with Brown Rice or the different variations of Quinoa bowls with deliciously sounding combinations of vegetables and dressings.

In total, across the two trips, 85 adults and children living with disfigurements such as congenital malformations, tumours, hernias, burns and ulcers, were treated. All members of the surgical team from Ocean Clinic gave up their time for free, in addition to paying for their own flights and accommodation. Meanwhile, a fundraising campaign launched by the clinic raised more than €5,000 to purchase essential materials and equipment.

“The Medical Charity Award honours personalities and projects that distinguish themselves through their outstanding medical and social commitment,” says a spokesperson for the German Medical Award. The award itself supports a charitable project; this year proceeds went to the NCL Foundation (For a Future without Childhood Dementia) from Hamburg. Dr. Kaye received the award at a ceremony which took place at the Sheraton Grand Hotel Esplanade, Berlin on November 25. He says: “It was an honour to receive the award in the name of the whole team. The Plastic Surgery Relief project in Lamu was a big achievement for us all and something we are very proud of. “Giving back is an important part of what we do at Ocean Clinic and, while the gratitude of those we were able to help was reward enough, I’m delighted for my team to be recognised for their amazing work.” Ocean Clinic intends to run the Plastic Surgery Relief Camp again next Easter.
