PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Dear Readers: I sat down to write this with a very heavy heart. Just as we started to prepare this month’s issue, we received the shocking news that our Features Editor, KJ Elsdon had unexpectedly passed away. It has deeply affected everyone at SOCIETY, as well as KJ’s many other friends and former colleagues on the coast, and our tribute to KJ leads our editorial content this month. We send our sincerest condolences to KJ’s mother who is undoubtedly feeling the loss of her only child most keenly. One of KJ’s favourite actresses –and she had a few –was Frances McDormand, the Oscarwinning star of Fargo and more recently, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. This character actress is known for her portrayal of quirky characters and certainly isn’t the standard idea of a Hollywood star as the article explains. There’s even more Showbiz Gossip this month. The on-off engagement of Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson finally appears to be on for sure (I’m not holding my breath though!) and have you seen the recent photos of Johnny Depp?– the man doesn’t look well at all. Fans who saw him on stage with his band The Hollywood Vampires, took to social media to voice their concerns about him looking ‘weak’ and ‘skinny’, but perhaps he is just preparing for a new film role. Meanwhile, in Marbella, Eleanor McKenzie has been exploring ‘geocaching’. Yes, it was a new one on me as well, and I was surprised to learn that there are hundreds of these treasure ‘caches’ in the Marbella area. Basically, it’s an adult version of Pokemon Go! and all you need is a smartphone, some GPS co-ordinates listed at one of the global treasure hunt’s websites (details are in the article) and you can take part here in Marbella, or go geocaching around the globe. Ian Greenland contemplates the problem with online passwords. I remember the days when ‘1234’ used to suffice, but as Ian points out, now you need a complex and completely forgettable string of numbers, letters and symbols in order to sign up for most online services these days. I’m sure I’m
not the only one who has had to go through the ‘reset password’ rigmarole, producing a few choice words that are not suitable as passwords, or for print. Photographer Julia Roder brings us a fantastic fashion shoot this month that showcases model Virag Toth in the designs of Podium Marbella, a local designer and all styled by Lena Tanevska. Podium’s bold floral prints, and their sharp denim sundresses are perfect for summer here and have that ‘let’s get this party started’ vibe. And if you’re looking for more summer fashion ideas, then SOCIETY regulars, Sisko Akt, are modelling a ‘rise and shine’ palette of colours with some bohemian gypsy styling. Contributor Sam Owen takes a look at how we can improve our relationship with ageing parents and how as we grow older we have an opportunity to build a new kind of relationship with them that can help us have better relations all round. I must say, Sam’s five tips are very useful and I’ve already passed them on to my offspring so that they’re prepared for the day when I become an ‘ageing parent’, but I’m not there yet as I have already reminded them. Jonathan Yeadon gives us his views on the recent royal wedding and reveals his love of a diamond tiara, as well as how to go from long hair to short in the most stylish way. Ian Kuah talks us through the latest supercar – the McLaren Senna, named after Aytron Senna, one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time. Unfortunately all 500 cars have been sold, but Ian thankfully informs us that we can ‘test drive’ the Senna in the soon-to-be released video game Forza Horizon 4. We’ve also got our book and box set recommendations to keep you entertained whether you’re soaking up the sun on the beach or staying indoors. And as always there are parties galore as the Marbella season gets into the full swing of summer. Enjoy July – it’s time to kick back and enjoy the Marbella summer. Andy Clark

And death shall have no dominion “They shall be one With the man in the wind and the west moon…” - Dylan Thomas By Eleanor McKenzie
K
A small tribute from Society Marbella to our treasured colleague, KJ Elsdon
erry Jane Elsdon, or KJ as most people in Marbella knew her, defied being labelled. You couldn’t box her in. She was so many things that it is impossible to encapsulate the entirety of her character in one word, although, judging by the many tributes to her written in Facebook posts, almost everyone mentioned her quick wit and her sense of humour.
Most of her friends know she went to Howell’s School in Cardiff, graduated in English Literature and African History from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and had a Diploma in Technical Theatre and Stage Management from Mountview Academy in London. She worked as a writer on the Costa del Sol for a number of years, including at Absolute Marbella, the glossy magazine that started a trend, before returning to her beloved birthplace Pembroke. There she had the honour, and she saw it as one, to have one of Wales’ most celebrated castles at the bottom of her road, as well as a splendid statue of Henry VII, the man who gave us The Tudor dynasty, and a host of novels, films and TV series. KJ referred to him as “the man who knocked Dickie Three’s block off at Bosworth.” While KJ wrote, accompanied by playlists on Spotify, a service that transformed KJ’s life in many ways, her cat, Cat ‘gobshited’ his way through the day, only moving to find yet another patch of sunlight to sleep in, leading to
many photos of him being a ‘sun bandit’ as KJ called him, as she bashed away on the keys, pounding out yet another article of impeccable quality. KJ was (in no particular order of importance): Devoted daughter A devourer of books Passionate cat lover A Pembrokeshire lass Plaid Cymru supporter Prog rock fan A Facebook flame thrower Potty-mouthed Welsh rugby follower Attacker of excessive political correctness Cappuccino drinker (mostly at Food at Williams in Pembroke) Grammar guardian Gibraltar admirer And so on, and so on…the possible list is almost endless. Except it is a list that has become finite due to KJ’s untimely death at the age of 57 on 11 June, 2018. But those of use who knew her and worked with her, who will remember the multi-hued arc of her talents, know that there would have been so much more to come. Like many writers, she was always threatening to write a novel. We can only wonder now what genre she might have chosen, although the smart money is probably on crime fiction or a thriller. KJ might ask you a question like, “What do you know about Mexican drug cartels?” The research was for the purposes of fleshing out the plot of a novel she was working on with Tony Hanania, another

26
former Marbella resident and published author that KJ continued to work with from a distance when she returned to Pembroke. She enjoyed co-writing with Tony, but it was never a completely adequate substitute for a book that was wholly the creation of her overflowing imagination. Everyone who has read anything by KJ knows that she was a wonderful writer. This talent flowed over into her online banter, which so many will miss, because KJ’s posts filled holes in so many of our days. She may have had a subscription to Private Eye and Mojo, but her FB friends were signed up to KJ’s timeline. Now it is empty. One of her last posts was about the demise of a local magazine, Pembrokeshire Life, saying, “VERY sad news! I’ve been reading this for decades and now it is no more.” KJ, your FB friends feel your exit from social media has left us with a similar gaping hole. You kept us entertained with cat memes, pithy comments on politics that were often like grenades lobbed into a mid-morning coffee break, an update on your extraordinary Kindle collection, plus all those mini letters you wrote, like this one to Google:
le Alerts, Dear Goog raight once se get this st a le p e w n Ca ed up for When I sign e and for all? , I meant th t Greg Lake e th t o n alerts abou t, is rist and lyric singer, guita ore! Geordie Sh m o dingbat fr rs you Respectfully KJ
Her comments following the recent wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle confirm that she’d have been a wonderful guest panellist on ‘Have I Got News for You’: “How kind of Hugh Hefner’s estate to allow the Princess Royal to wear his old dressing gown!” and on Victoria Beckham, “Yes, my habitual response to relief is also having a face like a busted boot. Pull the other one, love!” Incisive and insightful social observations that made us all laugh were undoubtedly one of KJ’s many gifts. KJ also introduced us all to her family who she loved dearly. As all children tend to, she sometimes shared stories about her mother Val that perhaps Val might not have wished to have had made public. But those of us who read them recognised the love with which they were shared and the deep bond between them. There is one about ‘fake news’ and its origins that comes to mind:
“Arriving downstairs last night after a shower I find Mam watching SKY News with an expression of concern on her face. Mam: “They’ve just said that Alex Ferguson has been taken into intensive care because of a serious health problem.” Me: “Oh no! Retirement can’t be suiting him.” (Several minutes pass). Mam: “How long has he been living in Greece for, then?” Me: “He hasn’t been! What on earth are you talking about?” Mam: “You said that the Greek climate can’t be agreeing with him.” And in situations like this, ladies and gentlemen, rumours are born. KJ, it is impossible to adequately convey the countless ways in which you were loved and your talent appreciated. We’re gutted that your story has ended so soon, and wherever your spirit is, we send you these words from Mr Thomas of Laugharne, a place you would have liked to live:
“Though they sink through the sea they shall rise again; Though lovers be lost love shall not; And death shall have no dominion.”

Celebrity Spotlight
An Unconventional
STAR By Eleanor McKenzie
From Fargo to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Frances McDormand has proved herself to be the ‘go to’ actress when the script calls for a toughtalking, no-nonsense and indisputably human character.
B
orn in 1957 in Chicago, Illinois, Frances McDormand studied at Yale Drama School where she shared a dorm room with Holly Hunter. It was Hunter who introduced her to Joel and Ethan Coen, the sibling directors who have made a name for themselves with their offbeat films. McDormand won a lead role in their first film, Blood Simple, where she is the unfaithful wife of a Texas bar owner who decides to have her and her lover killed. Blood Simple was released in 1984 to overwhelming critical acclaim and marked the beginning of her personal and professional collaboration with director Joel Coen, whom she married in 1984. The couple have one son, Pedro, who they adopted from Paraguay in 1994. McDormand is herself the adopted child of Canadian parents and during her childhood she moved home frequently, mostly in the Midwest, due to her father’s profession as a Disciples of Christ preacher. The family eventually settled in Pennsylvania, where McDormand fell in love with acting after playing Lady Macbeth in a high school theatre production.
"After Blood Simple, everybody thought I was from Texas. After Mississippi Burning, everybody thought I was from Mississippi and uneducated. After Fargo, everybody's going to think I'm from Minnesota, pregnant, and have blonde hair. I don't think you can ever completely transform yourself on film, but if you do your job well, you can make people believe that you're the character you're trying to be." 28
Celebrity Spotlight
After graduating from Bethany College in West Virginia as the only theatre major of her year, she entered the prestigious Yale Drama School where she met Hunter, and after graduating, she moved to New York. Early on in her career she already signalled a determination to do things differently. In 1982, one of her first roles saw her travel to Trinidad to perform in a play written by Trinidadian poet Derek Walcott, the Nobel laureate who died in 2017.
"I don't think of myself as a movie star and I can pretty easily convince other people that I'm not a movie star." The Actress Muse But much of the rest of her career is intimately tied to her relationship with the Coen brothers and she has undoubtedly given as much to their career as directors as they have to hers as an actress. You can hardly think of one without the other. The ‘director-muse’ relationship is nothing new to cinema: Hitchcock had a slew of blonde muses, from Doris Day to Ingrid Bergman and of course, Grace Kelly, who some might consider the ultimate Hitchcock muse. McDormand, by contrast, doesn’t fit the typical Hollywood actress muse profile: she doesn’t aspire to look glamorous nor does she slavishly follow fashion or demand the kind of press attention that would see her regularly in the tabloids. McDormand takes a ‘keep your head down’ approach and that’s why she is a master of her craft who prefers the outlandish and unusual script rather than the sure-fire blockbuster. The 1987 film Raising Arizona is a case in point. She performed alongside her dorm mate Holly Hunter and Nichcolas Cage in this Coen brothers’ fast-paced farce about an unlikely pair who go to extreme lengths to have a child.
Awards, awards, awards The following year she received an Academy Award nomination for her emotional portrayal of a Southern woman abused by her bigoted husband in the civil rights drama Mississippi Burning, starring Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe. She was still relatively unknown at the time, but she was rapidly rising to fame as in the same year as she got her Academy nomination she earned a Tony Award nomination for her performance as Stella Kowalski in a Broadway revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. Instead of courting mainstream success, however, McDormand continued to take on character roles in unusual pictures, choosing to lose herself in her often eccentric screen alter egos. However it was her role as Marge Gunderson in Fargo (1996) that won her a bag full of gongs, including an Oscar. Who can forget the pregnant policewoman who cracks a decidedly twisted set of crimes? Adopting a regional Minnesotan accent— complete with countless “yahs” and “you betchas”—and sporting a huge prosthetic belly, McDormand truly seemed to become Marge, underscoring her unmatched ability as a character actress. And it is as a character actress that she has reigned supreme. In 2000 she got her third Oscar nomination, this time in a supporting role in Almost Famous, Cameron Crowe’s biopic and his autobiographical ode to 1970s rock & roll. But let’s not forget her magnificent performance in Wonder Boys where she played the married college chancellor in love with rumpled novelist Grady Tripp, played by Michael Douglas who wore a pink, candlewick dressing gown for much of the film. She is one of those actresses who is constantly busy, yet we didn’t hear so much about her work again until 2014 when she starred as the title character in the HBO miniseries Olive Kitteridge.
Directed by Lisa Cholodenko and executive produced by McDormand, the series was adapted from the 2008 Elizabeth Strout novel of the same name which won the Pulitzer Prize. The story chronicles the lives of a high school teacher, her spouse and the denizens of their New England town. The acclaimed production ultimately won seven Emmys, including prizes for direction and Outstanding Limited Series, with McDormand earning the lead actress award. But it was her portrayal of Mildred, a mother seeking justice for her murdered daughter in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri that truly put her back in the limelight. The film was a big winner at the Golden Globes in January 2018, with McDormand taking home the prize for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. The film’s awards magnetism carried into the Oscars, resulting in a Best Actress win for McDormand. Taking the stage, she called for the other female nominees of the night to stand in solidarity, exclaiming, “Look around, everybody, look around, ladies and gentlemen, because we all have stories to tell, and we all have projects we need to finance.” In closing, she said, “I have two words to leave with you tonight: ‘inclusion rider,’” referring to a clause that actors can add to their contracts to ensure a diverse cast and crew. That’s the kind of person she is. Whatever we see McDormand in next, it is very likely that it will have something unconventional about it, whether it is the character she plays or the overall plot. As she says, “I’m a character actress, plain and simple... Who can worry about a career? Have a life. Movie stars have careers - actors work, and then they don’t work, and then they work again.” That’s what she’s been doing all her career, working and having a life - a real one lived off stage and off screen. But, when she is on our screens again, you can be sure she’ll be mesmerising.

Grande News
Arianna Grande and Pete Davidson are engaged. Yes, engaged… To be married! “They are a perfect fit” according to a close friend of hers, confirming that the stars have agreed to become husband and wife after spending just a few short months together. The singer and the comedian first went public on May 21, just a few days after the singer announced her split from Mac Miller, her boyfriend of nearly two years… That means the couple are engaged after just 1 month of dating! According to a second source, the couple “were telling people that they’re engaged” at Robert
Pattinson’s birthday party in Los Angeles on Saturday, June 9. “They are both constantly making each other laugh. Their moms have met. They’ve been very public with their relationship on social media, and they are very in love.” - However, we’re not sure that means the relationship is built to last for all of eternity… But while we have our doubts about the future of this couple, we’d be thrilled to be proven wrong. We’re all for young, spontaneous and intense love between two people. Congratulations Arianna & Pete!
Kat Von Dee, the busy bee! Kat Von D has been quite busy lately! After years of messy relationships with the likes of Jesse James and Deadmau5, she surprised us all by settling down and marrying a singer named Rafael Reyes. And now, she’s pregnant, too! Kat and Rafael had their wedding quite recently, and judging by her recent photos, she’s quite far along in her pregnancy. While everyone wishes Kat nothing but the best with her journey into motherhood, a lot of people are a little bit outraged with her right now because she took to Instagram to write a very long (and a tad controversial) message about her ideas on raising her baby. Here’s what she had to say… “I knew the minute we announced our pregnancy that we would be bombarded with
30
unsolicited advice. Some good and some questionable -- unsolicited none the less.” “I also was prepared for the backlash and criticism we would get if we decided to be open about our personal approach to our pregnancy.” She said that her own father was even upset about that approach -- he “flipped out on me when I told him we decided to ditch our doctor and go with a midwife instead.” “If you don’t know what it’s like to have people around you think you are ridiculous,” she complained, “try being openly vegan.” “And if you don’t know what it’s like to have the entire world openly criticize, judge, throw uninformed opinions, and curse you -- try being an openly pregnant vegan on Instagram, having a natural, drug-free home birth in water with a midwife and a doula, who has the intention of raising a vegan child, without vaccinations.” Despite her questionable decisions, we at SOCIETY wish her well!
Oh no he didn’t!...
You can say many things about Selena Gomez. You can say you don’t like her music because you’re entitled to have that opinion. You can say she has bad taste in men because Justin Bieber has never treated her right, you can even say that she sometimes goes a little OTT on the bronzer…But you just CANNOT say what Stefano Gabbana just said about the singer, not if you want to avoid a very deserved backlash from millions of people on social media. The Italian designer, who co-founded the fashion label Dolce & Gabbana, went out of his way on Instagram this week to attack the beautiful Selena Gomez.
Entertainment charts
In the comments section of a photo on “The Catwalk Italia’s” Instagram account, Gabbana wrote the following alongside a photo of Selena: È proprio brutta!!! This translates, very simply and extremely rudely, to: She’s so ugly. And while the star has so far taken the high road, refusing to even acknowledge the Italian designer's existence, her friends and fans online have been unable to show similar restraint. For what it’s worth, we at SOCIETY think you’re beautiful, Selena!
Not so True Thompson From the moment the world heard that Tristan Thompson cheated on Khloe Kardashian, fans have been practically begging the new mom to kick her no-good baby daddy to the curb. Remarkably, however, Khloe made the decision to try and work things out -- and it’s playing out about as well as you might expect. Khloe decided to stay put in their Cleveland home after welcoming daughter True Thompson, but that didn’t mean Tristan was fully forgiven! Throughout his team’s playoff run Tristan resided in a hotel, while Khloe lived alone in his mansion. Now the couple are cohabiting once again -- but apparently, that won’t be the case for much longer. “They’re both leaving Cleveland and heading to LA, but they’re going to live apart. They’ve been fighting nonstop,” according to a source. “They can’t get through one conversation without it turning into a huge argument.” - Oh dear! The insider says that despite her best efforts, Khloe simply can’t get over Tristan’s betrayal… And we’re not surprised!
Deep concern for Depp
Fans are concerned for Johnny Depp’s well-being after recent photos of the actor appearing “ill” surfaced online last month. Johnny posed with his fans at a Four Seasons hotel in St. Petersburg, Russia, last week looking visibly thinner than in previous appearances. The actor was in Russia for a performance with his band, The Hollywood Vampires. The image also provoked concern in comment sections, where users described the actor as appearing “sick,” “weak” and “skinny.” “I think my hero looks ill,” one user commented on Facebook of the shared fan photo.
Johnny has been the subject of some bad press this past year. First there was the very public implosion of his marriage to Amber Heard, who claimed the actor had physically abused her last year, and this year he has been in the process of suing his business managers! Ouch! Although he’s had a rough year, the reason for the actor’s new look is unclear. We do know that Johnny Depp takes his career quite seriously, so perhaps it’s for a new movie role? Let’s hope so!

North West’s hair starts Twitter storm When your parents are always in the public eye, and let’s face it the Kardashian-West parents go out of their way to make sure they stay there, you can expect to get a fair few column inches yourself, even if you are only five year’s old, as North West may already have realised. Her mother’s decision to straighten her hair and put it in what everyone is calling an ‘Ariana Grande-style ponytail” (like nobody else has a ponytail) it caused a flurry of tweets complaining about Kim’s treatment of her daughter’s hair.
Had Kim used extensions many asked in an injured tone, while others complained about the fact it had been straightened, one Twitter user saying, “I really hate how the Kardashians keep straightening that poor baby’s hair tho.” To be fair, Kim rarely straightens her daughter’s hair and it was for a special occasion. We suspect that the real fuss is about messing with a child’s hair at all. It was also just another opportunity to take aim at a Kardashian, which kind of backfires, as it just gives Kim more media coverage. But when you live by the mantra that “all publicity is good publicity”, Kim and Kanye are unlikely to complain. But what about North?
The ‘Love Island’ Dyers Eastenders’ landlord, Mick Carter, in his real life persona of Danny Dyer tunes into the TV reality show ‘Love Island’ every night. The show that is ‘Marmite’ features Danny’s daughter, Dani – no confusion in their house then! She has been stealing the hearts of the nation over her romance with top cockney geezer Jack Fincham. Sounds a bit like her dad then! What does Daddy Danny think of his daughter’s onscreen romance and what does he think when he sees her “necking a
32
walking pair of white teeth” as Love Island’s twitter account romantically phrases it. On Father’s Day he posted a picture of him skydiving with Jack, saying, “On me way to have a couple of cheeky tequilas with some slice of a geezer called Jack.” Phew! He hasn’t gone all gangster on Jack. Fans of the show can’t wait to see if Dani and Jack make it to the ‘Meet the Parents’ episode of the show. Who cares about the kids; it’s Danny everyone wants to see at Casa Amor!
Tommy vs Brandon, the social media feud
Rocker Tommy Lee and his son Brandon didn’t abandon their social media feud, not even for Father’s Day. In fact they went at it even harder, with Brandon posting a now deleted video of his father unconscious on the floor. War waged into the small hours of the following day until Brandon eventually pleaded with his dad to stop posting online, instead asking Tommy to bad mouth him to his face. Tommy had claimed on Twitter that he had paid $130,000 for Brandon’s stint in rehab, plus splashed out $40,000 on a birthday party as well as $10,000 on medical bills after Brandon knocked him out. Tommy wondered why his son was acting the victim on social media after such largesse had been expended on him. Brandon responded with an attack on Tommy’s parenting skills and frequent absences. It’s a not so unusual parentchild argument, but on a big stage. It may have stopped for the moment, but this feud is far from over!
I’m keeping the diamonds!
Lisa Armstrong is said to be furious with estranged husband Ant McPartlin after the troubled TV presenter demanded her jewellery be handed over and valued ahead of their divorce settlement. The couple have also argued over property, money (of course!) and maybe who gets to stay friends with Dec. Lisa, 42, has allegedly vowed to take Ant, who is worth an estimated £62 million, for as much as she can after details surrounding his new relationship with their former PA, Anne-Marie Corbett, emerged. Many of the details were released via Armstrong’s Twitter account and in a Trumplike moment she attempted to batter a follower over her claim that Armstrong was to blame for the bitter separation from Ant. Supporters of Ant and Lisa are drawing the battle lines although so far they haven’t created a hashtag for the McPartlin divorce! It is bound to come.
Sandra Bullock says No to Sex Scenes The Oceans Eight actress doesn’t know her best angles for sex scenes and rather than be filmed having sex so she can discover what they are, she has watertight clauses in her contracts prohibiting that kind of intimacy. In a recent interview she said: “I don’t want to know what my best angles are. Don’t wanna see it. Don’t want to hear it. Therefore, I’m not going to do it on film.” And who can blame her! Bullock is known for staying well away from conventional female roles and has been fighting her entire career to avoid stereotypes. “Can’t a romantic scene be funny?” she’s been known to ask and it’s absolutely certain that she knows how to make us laugh.

Geocaching By Eleanor McKenzie There’s a global treasure hunt called ‘geocaching’ and there are ‘caches’ all around Marbella. All you need is a smartphone and you too can start playing the adult version of Pokemon Go!
I
f you’d asked me exactly what geocaching was before I started researching it for this article, I’d probably have had to tell you to “Google it!” For me, prior to typing it in Google, I guessed it was something to do with social media targeting, or else to do with mobile phone technology. I was sort of right, but not quite. As it turns out, my guess that it was connected to mobile phones wasn’t a million miles away from the real answer: there is an official Geocaching app for both iOS and Android phones at geocaching.com. When I opened the site, it immediately told me that there are 605 geocaches in the Marbella area. I was surprised. For whatever reason, I imagined that this activity hadn’t reached Marbella yet, or that it wouldn’t particularly interest anyone here. How wrong was I?
Anyway, the similarity between the two is quite evident, as both involve hiding small weatherproof boxes containing ‘something’ in publicly accessible places, like parks, and distributing clues. Now that we have Global Positioning Systems (GPS) on our phones, players can post the GPS co-ordinates of where they have left the treasure on a listings site, such as geocaching.com, but there are other sites, which you will also find listed at the Wikipedia entry for ‘geocaching’. According to geocaching.com it’s “the world’s largest treasure hunt.” Already, I am beginning to wonder if this is an adult version of Pokemon Go! In a way it is, but it’s much more old school, even if you do need a smartphone and the app to participate.
WHAT IS GEOCACHING?
WHAT’S IN A GEOCACHE?
Quite simply, geocaching is an outdoor activity in which an item, or a container holding a number of items, is hidden at a particular location for GPS users to find by means of coordinates and other clues posted at a geocaching website.
First, every ‘cache’ must contain a logbook and pencil, so that finders can record their adventures and thoughts about the content. Typical cache “treasures”, also known in the geocaching world as ‘swag’ are not usually high value items, but may hold something of personal value to the finder Aside from the logbook, common cache contents are unusual coins, small toys, ornamental buttons, CDs, or books.
It was first played in Beavercreek, Orgeon in May 2000, so it has been around for some time, and apparently is a modern version of the 160-year-old game
34
letterboxing. I’ve never heard of that either, but there is an explanation of it at Wikipedia. I won’t bore you with the details here.
IT’S “THE WORLD’S LARGEST TREASURE HUNT.”
When you find a cache and have recorded your exploits in the logbook and online, you must then return the cache to the same coordinates so that other geocachers can find it. Geocachers are free to take objects (except the logbook and pencil) from the cache in exchange for leaving something of a similar or higher value.
Imagine the fun you might have putting together the items for the cache box, positioning it and then registering it online. After that you’ll have the enjoyment of reading what other people have to say about your cache. And, as a cache hunter, you’ll have the excitement of finding the treasure and recording your thoughts.
REASONS TO BECOME A GEOCACHER
GEOCACHES IN MARBELLA
At geocache.com you’ll find 15 reasons to get involved with geocaching. Some of my favourites are: Discover that adventure still exists in the real world Experience new places like a local Discover places you never knew in your own neighbourhood Discover the imagination of others You’ll have stories to tell Personally, I like the idea that it gets you outdoors and it returns a sense of fun and adventure to the world. If my child was still young enough, I would certainly consider it as a great family activity, and those of you with grandchildren have some ideal geocachers to hand. There are two ways to enjoy it, both as a planner of a geocache and as a hunter.
It’s quite easy to find out where some of the geocaches in Marbella are located, although that doesn’t mean it is easy to find them. Google “geocaching Marbella” and posts come up starting with letters and numbers. For example, the top hit on my search was GC32VQ1 Marbella Playa. Somebody with the Username MaccPirates created the cache in 2011 and the cache is described thus: “No visit to Marbella would be complete without a trip to the beach. This is about a 5-10 minute walk along the promonade from the central harbour and should be quiet to avoid muggles. The cache is a camouflaged box with logbook and pen and a few small swaps.” The description is also available in Spanish and German. There is an additional clue about how to find the cache, and this is given in code along
with a code description key. However, this is just an example of what is out there in Marbella and as some geocachers reported, they couldn’t find this particular treasure trove. All the caches that I found listed for Marbella are at geocaching.com. There are ones listed at Los Altos de Marbella, Parque Calvario, El Faro, Parque de la Ribera, the Marbella Arch and La Concha. That’s a small handful of the 605 that are supposed to be there. One thing every geocaching fan should be aware of: not everyone is in favour of it. Just as they found that Pokemon Go took people into places they shouldn’t have been, the same accusations have been levelled at geocachers. So, if you’re going to bury a cache in Marbella, please don’t put it in a place where cache hunters will be trespassing on private property, or could endanger themselves or others while getting to the cache. Geocaching has incredible potential to deliver not just an enjoyable hobby, but also to connect people in local areas and internationally. You don’t have to geocache only in Marbella – you can geocache your way around the world.

Mu Wat st ch
If you’re a fan of post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi dramas then this one’s for you! 97 years after a nuclear war has destroyed the planet, humanities only survivors live on a space ark that is pretty much doomed. Desperate for a solution to save the human race, 100 juvenile prisoners are sent back to Earth to test the planets habitability. They soon discover that not all of humanity was destroyed and life on Earth is a LOT different than what it once used to be. The series has just been renewed for a 6th season so if you haven’t watched it yet, you have a lot of ‘Netflix & Chill’ to catch up on. Enjoy!
The Immortalists
If you were told the date of your death, how would it shape your present? Imagine being a kid, sneaking out of your family home with your siblings to go and visit a gypsy woman who is said to be able to predict the day you die… Based in 1969, in New York City, word has spread about a mystical traveling psychic and once you’ve met her, she tells you ‘your date’. When you make it back home does life simply just go on? Will you believe this prophecy? Will it influence the way you live? Can you handle it? - This is a story of a Jewish family featuring 4 siblings and their mother. Each chapter tells a story of one of the sibling’s lives and how it progresses. A beautifully written novel, and for a book so focussed on death, there’s a tremendous amount of life and living within these pages.
The Woman in the Window It isn’t paranoia if it’s really happening...
The woman in the window is a mystery/thriller that’ll keep you guessing right up until you’ve read the last page! It’s about an agoraphobic woman called Anna who spends her life indoors, mostly spying on her neighbours... A new family moves in across the street, a mother, a father and their teenage son. But when Anna gazes out of her window one night and sees something she shouldn’t have, her world begins to crumble and its shocking secrets are laid bare. What is real? What is imagined? Who is in control and who’s in danger? It’s a gripping thriller where no one and nothing is what it seems. A must read!
Impulse
13 Reasons Why
If you haven’t heard about the Netflix drama series 13 Reasons, why then you’re clearly living under a rock, but it doesn’t matter, we’ll tell you all about it. Hannah Baker commits suicide and leaves behind 13 tapes that reveal 13 reasons why she ended her life. The tapes explain the trauma she experienced, the social isolation, the bullying and the missed opportunities and Hannah lets those “responsible” know how they failed her. It sounds pretty sad but there are also a lot of happy moments in this series, as well as a couple of OMG moments. The sadness doesn’t really kick in until the last couple of episodes. The second season was released last month meaning there’s a total of 26 episodes for you to watch! Netflix have announced that there will be a third season too. Yay!

Another sci-fi for you here, SOCIETY readers. This one is based on the novel by Steven Gould. Impulse is a new YouTube series which premiered on June 6th. Only the first 10 episodes are available and there’s no news about when the next will be released. It’s seriously addictive and we urge that you see for yourselves! It’s about a teenage girl called Henrietta AKA Henry (odd choice of name for a girl, we know) - long story short, she discovers that she is able to teleport after being stuck in a truck with a classmate who attempts to rape her. She has a seizure and somehow teleports back to her room, but while doing so, she inadvertently crushes him, leaving him a paraplegic. The show goes on to explore how she is able to defy the laws of science while trying to keep her abilities a secret from her friends and family.

hat do you think the most clicked on link on the internet is? “Kim Kardashian naked”?... No, that's old news. “Monkey and kitten on skateboard”??...Nope. (ok, try to concentrate).... “Donald Trump naked”??!!? ...oh come on, that's gross, what's wrong with you? No, it's three unassuming but maddening little words strung together to seemingly bail you out whilst simultaneously screwing you further any time you try to do just about anything online.... You know this trio of harassers - They're the stocky ones blocking your front door when you return carrying a load of shopping after a long day surfing the web. They spring up while you fumble for your keys, ready to stop you from entering your home before the ice lollies melt and the wine gets warm. One minute you're bounding up the path, tired but excited - ready to put your feet up, pop a cork and enjoy the spoils of the day and the next you're reminded just how frustrating the digital world has become for an analog brain. Your first two attempts to get through get a dispassionate rebuke from these aggy interlopers. As you desperately flounder around your memory banks for those magic words, irrationally worried one more wrong answer will get you permanently barred from your own gaff, these gatekeepers offer you a lifeline, albeit one covered in thorns. Don't worry they infer, ushering over three of their mates whose slickly benevolent grins and cheap polyester suits promise help while prophesying further disaster. “Oh not these a-holes AGAIN” you think when faced with the biggest party poopers this side of cyber-space. You place the shopping bags down, resigned to the fact that by the time this is all sorted, those Soleros are puddles and the next time you probably won't even remember where you live. You hang your head,

sigh heavily and click the link: Reset my password. (I've dropped the whole getting-shopping-home-people-on-thedoorstep analogy now, it's served its purpose - this is just you at the computer in your pants trying to buy cinema tickets or get back onto your frigging email after someone else has been on. You know what comes next.... to entertain. Far easier is to think of something which makes a kind of weird sense that particular moment in time, augment it beyond recognition to fit the strict rules of the tyrannically fascist password regime, blindly tell yourself you'll remember it this time, walk out of the room, eat some mini cheddars, realise you've already forgotten it, get annoyed, realise the situation's given you a topic for your next article, feel less annoyed, scribble a few points for the new article down on the paper with the pen you should have used to write down the password in the first place, go to get some more mini cheddars because the packs are tiny, eat them, sit down again, hang head, sigh, click “Reset my password”... If this absolutely spot-on assessment of this scourge of modern life doesn't have you nodding dumbly in awe-struck
Please enter a new password: Sixpacksteve *Your password must contain at least 2 numbers. When we do finally arrive at something the site accepts, it's invariably so convoluted and far removed from what we'd intuitively choose, the next time we try to login, we've got no clue what it was and the infuriating ritual repeats. Sure you could write it down, but that would require paper, a pen and more discipline than I'm willing
recognition, try substituting the mini cheddars with your favourite snack.... So how did we find ourselves in this farcical situation? Computers are supposed to make things easier. They're supposed to think so we don't have to. We don't get automatic updates or RAM upgrades. We just become shitter the older we get so how can we be expected to retain so many arbitrary combinations of words, letters and special characters when we regularly forget the names of second cousins and people working three desks over from us? Well, we could blame the explosion of the internet in the last two decades; our own addiction to a raft of sign-up sites, be they social media, e-commerce or online banking, our diminished attention spans, cognitive dissonance or the innate willingness of humankind to screw each other over through hacking, fraud, identity theft etc... OR, we could just scapegoat one man - Bill Burr. A
former manager at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, 15 years ago he drafted a guide on the creation of secure passwords, which he creatively named the “NIST Special Publication 80063. Appendix A.” - well, it's certainly less unwieldy than some of the passwords I've been forced to give myself. This document essentially standardised the password format across the board in its ridiculous current guise. Crucially, Burr fluffed it, basing his guide not on security expertise (he was a bureaucrat with none) or wacky notions such as proven facts, but a flawed white paper written in the 80s, long before the internet was invented. The fucking 80s!!? when SOOOO much was wrong. If you had to create a consistent, unified and apparently optimised haircut for every man on Earth today, would you look to Limahl or Flock of Seagulls?! That's what we're talking about here. Burr has since publicly apologised in The Wall Street Journal, admitting that his recommendations have actually led to less secure password formats (not to mention millions of wasted hours of our time). Simple maths and the laws of entropy show that a short password with zany characters is much easier for a computer to crack than a long string of easily remembered words - the hackers themselves aren't sitting there trying to guess - they write programs which do it while they lie back and eat your mini cheddars. If a site doesn't insist on special characters and numbers, don't even consider using them. So next time you have to think of a new password, don't run the gauntlet of self-realisation, frustration and disillusionment at your own encroaching senility and alienation in an increasingly technological future. Simply apply what you've learned here.... WEAK PASSWORD: Bi11Burr!$@C*nt STRONG PASSWORD: bill burr is a cun... arents are powerful. They look after us from the moment we’re born, ensure we stay alive and (hopefully) happy, they sacrifice a great deal to give us a great deal and they help shape our self-worth, at least initially. Some do the best they can and do a great job, some do the best they can but don’t do such a great job, others, sadly, don’t seem to even try to do the best they could – such is the variety of

parenting. Regardless of which type of parenting you had and despite how strained that relationship feels right now, as you age you have a new opportunity to build a relationship with your parents. Now I appreciate your internal dialogue may be saying all sorts of things like, “But I hate how they’ve treated me” or “I would love to have a better relationship with them but I don’t think it’s possible” or “I don’t care to have a relationship with them”. The reality is that

many people do care to have a better relationship with their parents but they just don’t know how to and/or have convinced themselves that they don’t care to. However you choose to look at it, there is a power in having a good, if not fantastic, relationship with your parents, if it is possible. Nurturing that relationship can have a powerful effect on your relationship with yourself and your relationships with others. It can give you a sense of inner stability and inner peace. They, too, benefit and as they age you become a part of their “life source” through the effects that human relationships have on helping us to live longer. If everyone can be a winner, what will help you to be? Use these five tips to help you gently evolve your relationship with your parent(s) from where it is now to where you want it to be.

5 TIPS FOR BUILDING A MORE POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH AGEING PARENTS AS ADULT CHILDREN 1. Define the type of relationship you want to have with them so you know what the goal is. Be clear on what type of relationship you have with them now so that you know the starting point in your journey, too. This will help you to determine what sort of actions on your part will help bring about the desired changes to get you from where the relationship is now to where you want it to be. 2. If you are upset about something they have done (to you) in the past, find a new perspective on the matter that feels fair and realistic but at the same time feels more positive than the previous view you have held. By doing so you can begin to see them and their past behaviours in an altogether different light. Remember that how you have stored a memory about something is not necessarily the correct view, it may be how you have interpreted things through the attitude you have adopted towards them. Attitudes shape how we view people and things. How you view your parents is not necessarily fact as much as it may simply be the perception you have held. You have the ability to change your attitude at any time.
you felt picked on or not good enough. Just one enlightening conversation could change all that. When you approach your parent(s) about something you want to gain clarity and closure on, start by asking them respectful questions that demonstrate your desire to understand them and their parenting choices and their life choices better. Questions like, “How was your upbringing and how did you find it?” and “What made you always push me to be a tough kid” and “When ‘X’ happened what made you respond with ‘Y’?” and “How come you always made us do…?” Done right, with open-ended questions and the intention of finding mutual understanding and helpful solutions, this is a conversation that should help you to build a relationship, even if there isn’t much of one to speak of right now. 4. Take the time to get to know your parents as mere adults rather than parents. Who are they? What motivates them? What do they enjoy? What was their childhood like? What was their relationship with their parents like? What can you each do differently to help nurture a better relationship going forward? Your parents are just people; get to know them as people – their desires, goals, intentions, regrets, epiphanies, proud moments and so on.
3. Seek your parents’ help in getting closure on the matters of the past that still strain your relationship in the present. This can be helpful if you find the above 5. Whether your parents are still alive suggestion difficult to do on your own. or have passed away, speak to family Speak to your parents about any issues members and friends of your parents you want resolved in your head for once to understand your parents from their and for all. Keeping in line with their continuous growth, Cirumed Clinic celebrated yet another successful Live Surgery course this year hosted at the luxurious Don Carlos Resort in Marbella, with live surgeries video-streamed form Cirumed Clinic.
his year’s course saw an impressive 140 attendees, with surgeons arriving from a diverse selection of countries worldwide. The participants attended to gain knowledge for themselves and their practice, as well as learn from Dr. Aslani and other international star-surgeons in the field such as Dr. Daniel del Vecchio (New York), Dr. Alfredo Hoyos (Bogota), Dr. Gabriel Planas (Barcelona), Dr. Francisco Gomez Bravo (Madrid), Dr. Iván Manero (Barcelona) and Dr. Michael Salzhauer (Miami), also known as Dr. Miami. Dr. Aslani’s primary focus when organizing these courses is to be able to share his expertise in his surgical techniques by demonstrating first-hand how his surgeries are approached and providing in-depth knowledge about how to tackle the surgery itself and everything that comes along with it. The fat-grafting technique, which is rapidly growing in popularity, is becoming a worldwide favourite due to its minimallyinvasive nature, natural looking outcomes and the simple yet clever idea of fat redistribution. Dr. Aslani’s decades of experience is what gives him the edge to lecture on the subject. The two-day course was packed with live surgeries, lectures and discussions giving the participants a whole world of new knowledge to assist them in their practices. The first day consisted of an exciting “Body Contouring Battle”, where four surgeons participated in showing their techniques in a Live Surgery. The course participants voted based on efficiency, safety, aesthetic result, entertainment and most new ideas obtained. The surgeries were streamed live from the Cirumed Clinic operating theatres where the surgeons were able to enjoy the top-of-the-range equipment and showcase their best possible procedure in an attempt to win the battle, the result of which was announced later that evening. To finalise the first day and to give all the participants the opportunity to network, a spectacular gala dinner was

hosted at the Don Carlos Resort, which included an impressive banquet and a brilliant fire-breathing poolside show. The announcement of the winner of the “Body Contouring Battle” was an exciting moment with very close results, and was ultimately awarded to Dr. Daniel del Vecchio. To conclude the night, many of the participants attended the legendary Nikki Beach White Party enjoying the finale of a mesmerizing firework display. The second day commenced with yet another live surgery, and the day’s theme was based around hybrid surgeries where the surgeon combines fat grafting with silicone implants to benefit from the advantages of both and demonstrate how they beautifully complement each other. All the lecturers kept the audience engaged by each
presenting a different case of hybrid surgeries, proving how versatile the technique really is. During the coffee breaks the participants wandered around Cirumed’s biggest exhibition hall to date which hosted a multitude of stands ranging from companies providing implants, to post-op garments to surgical equipment. It was a triumph both for the participants and the companies to be able to make deals and reliable business connections. At the end of the second day, after the moderating surgeons closed their final discussion, the participants left with grateful smiles on their faces, compliments to Cirumed, and a great deal of new material for their personal growth. This is what inspires Cirumed to continue hosting their Annual Live Surgery courses and they’re already looking forward to next year’s seventh Course and contributing to making Marbella the place to be for top class Plastic Surgery! cirumed.es

The Ultimate
Restyle
This month Jonathans talks us through his latest extreme hair makeover. He also shares his views on the biggest wedding of the year.
THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT I am not really known for my dramatic makeovers but on this particular day I had a moment of divine inspiration. My good friend Rachael needed a change, she had her hair in the same style for the last four year, and my best mate Lee said if the gypsy ponytail didn't go soon he was going to shave her head. When she asked him what did he exactly mean by the gypsy ponytail look, he immediately replied, ‘the traveller shoplifter look that you are rocking at the moment.' So we decided that there comes a point when you just have to change your look. Rachel admitted to me that she was bored with her hair after years of extensions without really having a break. She had reached the point that so many women do, when they look in the mirror and think, ‘I really need to do something different.’ So when Rachel said she was in the mood for a big change, she thought she would have to talk me into it, but it just so happened I was in the mood for

it as as well. Far too safe would have been a bob, which would have been an idea if we were going for a gradual change, but we were both feeling... radical. We wanted radical! I explained to her if we were going to do something from long to short, I wanted to do something a little edgier that a bob. She has had her hair short in the past so it wasn’t a scary leap for her to take. Short hair is easy, however sometimes it can end up looking like what it is...just short hair. I wanted something more fashion forward, more of a talking point and to get this effect I wanted to leave the front longer. Rachels reservations were that it would get in her eyes and that it would annoy her. I told her to shut up, sit down, do as she was told and she would love it. If she didn’t love it, then we could always cut it shorter. The only thing we agreed on was that in the nape of the neck it had to be very short, so we went from there. Colourwise, Rachel had been more of a brunette but I felt with the haircut being so short and dramatic, it required one
colour - black. I used a semi permanent in black because I wanted high shine and with this hair colour, strong makeup and that new hair cut, I felt I turned her out decidedly French. Rachel was delighted to discover that we would be drying it with our fingers, no brushes were used and I promised her that this would all be all that she would need to do at home. She messaged me the next day with a photograph of herself where she had just got up, run her fingers through her hair and ta da it was done. Lee proclaimed it to be an absolute resounding success. When he saw the final result he just said, ‘ Oh thank God for that.’ It was nice to do something so extreme and I enjoyed being able to give someone a lift just by making them feel better about themselves.

Off with a bang As this issue goes to print I will mostly be somewhere on a Mexican beach at the wedding of one my best friend's daughters. After much deliberation and two cancelled venues, in two different locations, she opted for Mexico. I have been reliably informed that currently in Cancun there is rather a significant drug war talking place and a friend of mine showed me reports of a Mexican guy with a gun, going up and down the Coastline on a jet ski shooting randomly at a beach vender. Not exactly sure what he was vending, I don’t really think you get shot at for vending fruit. All being well, as this goes to print, I am very much alive and putting waves and curls into the bride's hair, despite the fact that the humidity will be around 80 % and there is a strong possibility that she is going to look like she has been for a swim rather than getting married. I am terrified that the is going to She could have walked down in a humidity ruin anything that pair of jeans and a ponytail. That we try to achieve tiara did it for me. the beach during the wedding. Eileen has promised me that’s not going to happen. How she knows that I don’t really know! Hopefully I will return to the salon in one piece and be able to amuse all my clients with tales from my Mexican adventures.
That’s Show business folks The Royal Wedding – or alternatively Megan's biggest role of her career. I like her, I think she is absolutely fab. The skeptic in me does however feels that she may possibly appearing in the story of her own life. I feel she has been chosen because she is an actress and because she is able to present whatever kind of image the Royal Family feel is necessary to bring them into the 21st century. Doubtless Harry is in love with her, and she has now been taken onto The Firm. We all know the Royals are a brand, a brand most of us love and buy into. But as with all brands, they need to evolve and follow the trends and in the world of social media don’t you think they needed their very own Kardashian? With Megan they are definitely going for the younger vote. If it was a fashion look, the marriage would be described as ‘on trend.’ Megan is from a single parent family with a mother who is AfricanAmerican. She is divorced, an outspoken humanitarian and a successful actress. If she had been gay and had one leg she would have ticked all the boxes.

As for the big day itself, forget the dress, the hair, the makeup, I am not interested. Did you clock that filigree tiara? She could have walked down in a pair of jeans and a ponytail. That tiara did it for me. If I had been given that to wear there would be no way it was going back to the Queen let me tell you. It would have taken a gun to get that off me.

His chart-topping hits, including “Say you won’t let go”, and “Impossible” as well as other songs and he had the audience entranced throughout his set. They sang along and shouted for umpteen encores. The star was supported by Kin and Tony Capo, who are La Sala favourites.
We enjoyed…
The post performance refreshments and watching guests taking selfies with James Arthur who happily mixed with the crowd.

The chilled Laurent-Perrier champagne on arrival and the delicious Thai inspired canapés. The superb entertainment from Masquerade Duo, Live Sax, Menlizzon Drum Duo, DJ Jon Besant and more made sure that this was one of the liveliest White & Gold parties in the history of the beachside club.
We rubbed shoulders with…

BENDING THE LAWS OF PHYSICS IS NOT A DESCRIPTION OF WHAT THE SENNA DOES BEST. RATHER, MCLAREN HAS TAKEN THE RULES AND APPLIES THEM TO BEST EFFECT, AND ON THE BALD LIMIT AT ESTORIL IT IS VERY CLEAR THAT THEIR ENGINEERS HAVE MASTERED THESE RULES BETTER THAN ANY RIVAL.
O
n an overcast day in the spring of 1984, I drove half a dozen laps of the Nürburgring Nordschleife on the press launch of the brand new Mercedes 190E 2.3-16, a DTM homologation special powered by a Mercedes engine topped with a Cosworth designed 16-valve cylinder head. After lunch we assembled in the VIP area to watch 20 of these cars battle it out in the Nürburgring Champions Mercedes-Benz Cup on the new Grand Prix Circuit. With half the grid made up
138
of Formula One champions I knew this was a race I would never forget, but the big surprise was yet to come. Before the start the weather took a turn for the worse and it started to drizzle heavily. But right from the word go it was clear that the wet track did not seem to bother a relatively unknown 24-year-old driver from Brazil with only three F1 races under his belt. On that first lap Ayrton Senna da Silva elbowed his way past Prost, who had started in pole, and then proceeded to
drive away from the pack. By the end of the race Senna was leading by a two second margin over Lauda, whom he pipped to the chequered flag, with Reutemann, Rosberg, Watson, and Hulme in tow. Senna had proven his talent in front of the world just three weeks before the celebrated Monaco Grand Prix win that really put him on the F1 map. It was also a performance that hinted at the towering superiority he would show over his peers whenever a race turned wet.
TORQUE TALK
True to form, on a cold and wet April day at Estoril in 1985, in his 17th Grand Prix and second ever race behind the wheel of the Lotus 97T, Senna won his first ever Formula One GP. Leading from the word go, he claimed the fastest race lap as well as dry pole position. With his legend growing race-by-race it was no surprise when Senna went on to win the 1988, 1990 and 1991 F1 World Championships for McLaren. Ayrton Senna’s tragic death at Imola in May 1994 occurred just over 10 years after his spectacular Monaco win whilst leading the San Marino Grand Prix in a Williams. Widely regarded as one of the greatest and most talented F1 drivers of all time, Senna also left behind the accolade of being the youngest ever three times F1 World Champion. Fast-forward to June 2018, and we are at a thankfully warm and sunny Estoril to drive the latest McLaren supercar, unashamedly named Senna
in honour of the man who brought those three F1 World Championship trophies home to Woking. It is no surprise that the total production of 500 cars, to be delivered by next July, sold out within days at a list price of £750,000 in the UK. However, avid gamers will be happy to note they will be able to ‘test drive’ the Senna in the soon to be released Forza Horizon 4! Bending the laws of physics is not a description of what the Senna does best. Rather, McLaren has taken the rules and applies them to best effect, and on the bald limit at Estoril it is very clear that their engineers have mastered these rules better than any rival. The Holy Grail here is weight or the lack of it. Instead of trying to redefine the hypercar using technology like batteries and electric motors, all of which are heavy and therefore detrimental to the way the car accelerates, brakes and turns, McLaren starts from the platform of maximum possible weight reduction.
To this they then add a powerful and responsive engine, cutting edge active aerodynamics, their next generation active chassis, and top it off with the most powerful set of road car brakes known to man. It is a very simple formula really, but one aimed at total efficiency and honed to perfection. Although the Senna is not a direct replacement for the P1, but rather a stand alone model in its own right, there is no getting away from the fact that it is a sensational 6.0 seconds a lap faster at Estoril than the 200kg heavier P1. Based around a bespoke carbon-fibre central tub and clothed in carbon-fibre bodywork, the Senna tips the scales with a dry weight of 1,198kg. The output of the M840TR twin-turbocharged 3,999cc flat plane crank, dry-sump V8 is a conservative 800hp with 800Nm of torque. The seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox takes drive to the rear wheels, and shifts are as fast as can be managed

by any machine thanks to the Formula 1 Ignition Cut technology that cuts the spark for a split second during a shift. With launch control enabled, McLaren claim a 0-100km/h time of 2.8 sec, 0-200km/h in 6.8 sec, with 300km/h coming up in 17.5 sec. Top speed is 340km/h, and since no track has a straight long enough to let a hypercar reach 400km/h, a top speed challenge to the likes of the Bugatti Chiron was not in the brief, and certainly not the point here. McLaren’s Formula One team are world leaders in aerodynamics, so it was no stretch to imagine some of this knowledge would eventually find its way into one of the road cars in a more blatant way than we have seen up until now. The Senna’s active aerodynamics produce a total of 800kg of downforce at 250km/h, which is 40% more than McLaren’s former flagship model, the P1 of 2014 could manage.
by struts that also make up part of the front wings. It is so rigid that it barely deflects 10mm at 250km/h. The outer struts help to channel air past the front wheel housings, keeping the flow as clean as possible. Internal ducting sends ram air to cool the front brakes.
This produces a car that appears more shaped in the wind tunnel than one also styled to be beautiful like the 720S. While the Senna adopts a conceptually similar headlamp and air intake arrangement to the 720S, the horizontal front splitters on each side of the nose are each comprised of three tiers, the likes of which have never been seen before on a street legal machine.
The bottom of the car is completely flat, the wide side sills partly formed by the bottoms of the butterfly wing doors being part of this. Ram airflow to the intercoolers is handled by the huge side intakes while the rooftop mounted air scoop feeds ram air directly into the carbon-fibre intake plenum on top of the engine.
In the vertical plane, the massive lower front splitter is anchored and supported

TOP SPEED IS 340KM/H, AND SINCE NO TRACK HAS A STRAIGHT LONG ENOUGH TO LET A HYPERCAR REACH 400KM/H, A TOP SPEED CHALLENGE TO THE LIKES OF THE BUGATTI CHIRON WAS NOT IN THE BRIEF, AND CERTAINLY NOT THE POINT HERE.

car and this can be seen in terms of the opportunities for hot air to exit the engine bay at the rear. Apart from the expected mesh grill under the slim LED taillights the significant voids between the horizontal aerofoil sections that make up the engine cover and support for the huge and complex rear wing assembly make this clear. Together with that big wing all these organically shaped and profiled components are quite different from anything seen before on either a road or racing car. Meanwhile, the triple exhaust pipe outlets that emerge in a cluster on the trailing edge of the rear deck are shaped to work with the airflow in this part of the tail to help reduce swirl and thus drag.
142
“The advantage a road car has over a racecar that has to conform to a rulebook is that we can use active aerodynamics,” Ian Howshall, McLaren’s Product Manager for the Ultimate Series explained. “Thus, while you can only use DRS in certain conditions on a racecar, you can do what you like on a road car so long as it conforms to the normal construction and use regulations.” “A good example of this is under braking where the sudden forward weight transfer requires a reduction in downforce over the front axle and a significant increase in downforce over the rear,” Ian explained. “Our computer controlled active aero will take care of this with precisely the right amount of transfer.” The mapping will also alter the downforce going into, through
TORQUE TALK
out and destabilise the car.
and out of a bend, optimising stability and mechanical grip on the driven rear wheels. The system will bleed off downforce gradually as a function of speed so as to not overload the suspension and tyres. This is critical in places like the Döttinger Höhe at the NürburgringNordscheife where the combination of aero and compression into the dip would otherwise cause the front suspension to bottom
The Senna sits on bespoke Pirelli Super Trofeo R street legal trackday rubber in 245/35ZR19 and 315/30ZR20 sizes. The big brakes you see behind the wheels use six-pot monobloc alloy callipers to clamp unique carbon ceramic discs made by a new process that takes seven months to produce one disc! In ideal conditions these brakes can stop the Senna from 200km/h in an eye popping 100 metres! While the specification looks good on paper, the experience of the engineers and test drivers result is the magic ingredient that produces the synergy everyone talks about but is so seldom realised. The result is a fine balance that makes the Senna easy to drive if you have experience with supercars. Perhaps the most difficult thing, depending on your physical build is getting in and out of the deeply sculpted ultra-light carbon-fibre race seats that come equipped with Sabelt six-point race harnesses. McLaren has done some ergonomic rationalisation with regard to switches and buttons. By grouping most of the significant controls such as the Start/ Stop button, Race mode, fan, and central locking in one section of the roof console, with the electric windows and interior and map reading lights in another, the designers have adopted proven aviation practise where finding the right button quickly is critical. Beyond that the familiar McLaren engine and transmission control mode knobs sit below the infotainment screen, while the D, N & R gearbox selector and Launch Control buttons are on a thin console that moves fore and aft with the driver’s seat for consistent reach. Making a turbocharged engine as responsive as a good naturally aspirated one is an art that thankfully has been steadily advancing in recent years. Making a 4.0 litre 800hp twinturbo V8 with throttle response as finely graduated as the McLaren Senna has is worthy of an engineering award.
143
TORQUE TALK
Having 800hp and 800Nm of torque propel a car with a 1,198kg dry weight makes for a spectacular power-toweight ratio of 668hp/tonne. Deploying it in such a way that it does not break traction with every prod of the throttle is helped by the fact that throttle response can be metered so precisely that a passenger would not spill his drink if the driver chose to pretend the Senna was a luxury limousine. This super progressive throttle is also one of the keys to the Senna’s potential poise in corners on track. At Estoril I quickly learned to exploit it as a precision tool to adjust the car's attitude in the bends. You have to look at this in the total context of the active aerodynamics and the RaceActive Chassis Control II active suspension that increases its stiffness with speed, supporting the increasing aerodynamic loads and maintaining the correct ride height. While the computers are perfectly balancing the chassis and aero so seamlessly that the driver remains unaware of this ‘magic’ happening in the background as you go into, through, and out of a bend, it is still the driver’s hands on the wheel and right foot that determine the eventual outcome. McLaren say they developed an intuitive control strategy that works
144
seamlessly and transparently to the driver, and my seat of the pants only confirms this. A classic example of intuitive feel comes in the flowing sequence at Estoril, approaching the long right hand sweeper called the Parabólica that leads from Turn 12 onto the main straight. You exit Turn 11 in second gear and short shift to third before dabbing the brakes to carry a reasonable amount of speed over the left hand kerb of Turn 12, and accelerate moderately in a straight line towards the entry to the Parabólica. Turning in smoothly with one sweep of the steering wheel you hug the right hand kerb and progressively accelerate until you feel the front end beginning to run wide. This happens because the Parabólica is not quite a perfect 180-degree curve, tightening slightly just before the mid-point of its radius. A gentle moderation of the throttle here brings the nose back into line, regains full grip at the front wheels, and allows you to metre in the power again. With gradually increasing power you feel the Senna smoothly adopting a foursquare near-neutral stance. Slowly unwinding the steering wheel
while feeding in the power towards the exit kerb on the left you can really feel the benefits of the active aero and suspension on the car's stability, mechanical grip, and sheer poise. The best of my six allotted laps in the afternoon session saw an exit speed of 184km/h from the Parabólica onto the main straight, with a terminal speed of 280km/h before braking. Not too shabby apparently as I was later told that McLaren’s ace pro-driver achieved a best terminal speed of 290km/h before braking. During my session I also tried playing with the throttle in second gear on a couple of the slower bends. With aerodynamic downforce at its minimum here there was no question that the big rear Pirellis would be no match for the lusty motor. What I learned here was that the Senna will not chew you up and spit you out if you know what you are doing. The characteristic velocity of the chassis is very linear, and a quick flick of opposite lock on a moderated throttle is all it takes to get the rear back in line. When the progenitor of this flat-plane crank V8 made its debut in the MP412C of 2011 it sounded rather flat and

lacking in inspirational content. While it got better with each succeeding model, the Senna’s soundtrack is spot on. The mechanical melody behind your head is a heady snarl of the V8 motor and its exhaust note overlaid at some engine speeds with a hint of the gurgling noise made by a brace of carburettors. This gets better with revs until it reaches its full crescendo at 7,500rpm. Things are just as good for bystanders, and from the pit lane at Estoril the ear candy produced by a Senna going past on full noise is a heady combination of engine, exhaust, and the sound of this carbon-fibre machine bending the air to its will. McLaren has really nailed it this time.
146
Given the Senna’s power-to-weight ratio, the gut-wrenching acceleration G-force is expected. However, the dynamic quality that impresses the most is g-force under braking. The very idea of mashing the brake pedal at the 200-metre marker board with 280km/h showing on the speedo is something normally associated with a full-blown GT3 racecar on slick tyres.
That the Senna test cars repeated this lap after lap on street legal trackday rubber in ambient temperatures over 30-degrees C with absolutely no sign of brake fade is a marvel in itself. More than that its stability from the moment you hit the left pedal is unerring, and I felt that even without my hands on the steering wheel the car would still have pulled up straight.
You need to get down to about 100km/h to take the right-hander without using too much kerb, so the Senna’s ability to scrub off around 180km/h in just 200m is mind-blowing for a street legal car that you can drive to the shops, or even from London to Monaco in a day. We apparently achieved over 2.0g of eyeball popping retardation!
An all-out assault on what is possible with today’s technology, the McLaren Senna has changed the supercar landscape forever. As a road legal trackday focused machine it takes cornering and braking to a new level that no other supercars can match at this time. Ayrton would be proud.

Down Memory Lane…
rom time to people remark to me “You’ve had a pretty full life”, which I suppose is true. As a “Worker Priest” (an idea which originated in France with the idea that some priests should “go out into the world” to earn a living in a secular environment) I have been able to minister in the Church, whilst at the same time operating as a chef and as a Territorial Army chaplain. My time in this capacity gave rise to a number of memorable moments. On one occasion on exercise, whilst exchanging solemn words with a visiting brigadier standing next to the cook tent, a flap opened and a red perspiring head popped out. Catching sight of me it said “’Ere, padre, come an’ tell us a joke. It’s f*ck*ng ‘ot in ‘ere!” The brigadier did not flinch: “Padre, your flock is calling for you!” It was on the same exercise (when I was actually technically killed twice by American “friendly fire” – although I cannot see anything the slightest bit friendly about anybody shooting at me) when a squaddie thudded past me wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with “If I’m running – keep up!”. “Who’s he with?” I asked.“Physical Training Corps?” “No, padre”, came the laconic reply. “Bomb disposal!”
The army has a way with words. And not only the soldiers. I was in a queue in NAAFI and ahead of me was a rather obstreperous child giving its mother a hard time. As they approached the check-out it began demanding some sweets. The mother refused, at which the child remarked “If you don’t let me have any sweets I’m going to tell daddy that I saw you kissing sergeant Thomas’s willy!” The two of them were through the door like a shot, whilst the entire shop fixed me with an unblinking stare. I am pleased to report that I maintained a stiff upper lip. To the pure all things are pure! And mistakes are easily made. I once served under a particularly irascible (and therefore fairly unpopular) C.O. Before a large Mess dinner on one occasion
148
he was recounting his recent exploits to me which included staying at the stately home of a relative, with all the attendant jollities. “My, my, Colonel”, I said “you’re really something of a sybarite!” “Ah, yes, I suppose so” he agreed happily. During the dinner one of those sudden silences fell (people say that it is because angels are flying overhead). In the midst of it came the Colonel’s bray “Well, as the chaplain has just remarked to me, I’m really something of a sodomite!” I didn’t have to pay my next Mess bill!
out to dry?” came “Bread and butter pudding”. Even at a higher educational level mistakes can be found. I once tutored in the Open University on the subject of world religions, and had an engineering student studying religion “to broaden my mind”. The first essay that I received from him began “The first book in the Bible is the Book of Guinesses”.
ALL WENT WELL UNTIL MY WIFE CAME UPON THE LITERARY EFFORT OF A LOCAL GYPSY CHILD. “POLICE IS BASTARDS” IT READ...
The Church sometimes gives rise to moments of unintended levity. Archbishop Donald Coggan was once invited to preach in a prison and began his sermon: “Saint Paul was a man of many convictions”, and could not understand the general hilarity which ensued. And another archbishop, Patrick Murphy O’Connor, was presiding in a church which had just had halter microphones installed. Clergy were warned that the slightest whisper would he heard throughout the church. The archbishop also had a new chaplain who, during the course of the service, approached the throne to put a mitre on the archbishop’s head. Stepping back he realised that he had put it on back to front. He advanced and rotated it upon the archbishop’s head, at which came over the loudspeakers “There’s no need to screw the bloody thing on!”. Lesser clergy also have to be careful. I remember on one occasion when, during an Easter service, the curate solemnly announced “I shall now ask Mrs Lewis to come forward to lay an egg upon the altar”. You also have to have your wits about you when dealing generally with the laity. The confessional can be a minefield, as literally anything can happen. A very elderly lady once confided “Well, father, we’ve now got to the stage of oral sex…” I fear that I so far forgot myself as to exclaim “What?!” “Yes”, she said, “all we can do is talk about it!”
My wife was deputy head of a large school, and we were both friendly with the chief constable. As part of “reaching out to the community” it was arranged that the local police would give a talk, and this would be followed by a little exercise in which pupils could record their opinions. All went well until my wife came upon the literary effort of a local gypsy child. “Police is bastards” it read. A report went to the chief constable, who arranged for the child to be taken to a local police station, given a tour, fed in the canteen, permitted to wear a helmet and given a ride in a police vehicle. Back in school he was asked to record his impressions. It didn’t take a minute. “Police is cunning bastards”. It has to be said that this child had a very bright literary future! As head of a catering college I came across a number of students about whom that couldn’t be said, although they produced some lovely howlers. In one exam the question was asked “How can you delay milk turning sour?” which elicited the reply “Keep it in the cow”, whilst on another occasion the question asked “Give an example of an edible fungus. What is a characteristic feature?” The aspiring chef replied “Mushrooms. They grow in damp places and so look like umbrellas”. But my students never quite descended to the level recorded by a local home economics teacher. In reply to the question “What are you doing when you knead, rinse, and hang

Le Discret INCREDIBLE HOSPITALITY & AMAZING FOOD By Danielle Jade Firth
If you’re a fan of French cuisine and looking for well-flavoured dishes served in beautiful surroundings, then you should head for Le Discret.
L
e Discret has been on the coast for a number of years, and was once tucked away in Los Naranjos. However, as the restaurant was usually fully booked, the owners decided to upsize and have now moved to one of the busiest streets in Nueva Andalucía. The new restaurant has a beautifully decorated terrace and tropical garden; indoors the design is contemporary and sophisticated. Friends and I decided to book a table there for a belated birthday lunch. Philippe and Vanessa, our hosts, greeted us warmly on arrival. We had planned to eat indoors; however, after spotting the stunning outdoor terrace we decided to enjoy a couple of cocktails while taking in the view. Vanessa, realising we were hungry, showed us to our table and handed us the menus. If we could have ordered everything I think we would have the menu offers authentic French recipes, prepared by talented chef Herman Stephan, whose passion for

foie gras. Our starters were flawless. The presentation of each plate could have come out of a Michelin starred restaurant, and they were as good as they looked. We were actually pleasantly surprised that the prices were not overly expensive, compared to some restaurants in the area.
These out-of-this-world starters were accompanied by another round of excellent cocktails. For our main course I ordered the boeuf bourguignon and my friends ordered classic French dishes, shoulder of lamb and duck magret with orange sauce. Again, the presentation for each dish was beautiful, and I was reminded that the French do have a touch for the visual side of a meal. The equally classic bouef bourgiognon was slow cooked for 6 hours so it came as no surprise that the meat was tender and flavourful. It is the best dish I’ve eaten in a very long time. As for the lamb and the duck - there were clean plates all around!
Did we have room for dessert? Of course! How could we resist the French apple tart, crêpes Suzette and a floating island, which if you have not tried it yet, is a must. It was the perfect ending to a superb meal. Congratulations to Philippe and Vanessa - please keep up the good work, guys. And, thank you so much, Le Discret for your wonderful hospitality and your phenomenal food. Readers, book now and be prepared to be blown away! Apricots are an excellent source of vitamins A & C and are a good dietary source of fibre and potassium. Blackberries: Mid - late summer. Best to buy these when shiny and plump. Rinse blackberries only when they are about to be eaten or frozen. Rinsing right away to eat later promotes quick rotting. Blueberries: May - October. Purchase when berries are a deep blue hue with a whitish, silvery bloom. Berries should be firm and heavy feeling. The blueberry should taste both tart and sweet. Cantaloupe: June - August. Ripe melons sound hallow when tapped. They also feel heavy for their size and they should have a slightly strong, sweet aroma to them. Cherries: May - August. The best cherries are plump, bright and have no blemishes. Cherries naturally grow in groups or pairs, so the best ones to purchase are the ones with the stems still joined together. Grapes: End of summer. Premium grapes are plump and wrinkle-free and the stems should look healthy. Grapes are a great source of manganese and have significant amounts of vitamins C, B1, and B6. Peach Season: Early - late summer. The best peaches feel heavy for their size and have a slight softness to them. Nectarines follow these same rules as they are considered fuzz-less peaches. Of all of these fruits, strawberries are my favourite.

STRAWBERRIES: 5 Fun Facts This amazing little fruit tastes best at the height of summer. Be sure to visit farmers’ markets to source this bundle of goodness. 1. Strawberry’s botanical name is Fragaria ananassa. Don’t use the word berry. It is an “aggregate accessory fruit”:. the ovaries don’t form the fruit, which is instead formed by adjacent tissue. 2. An accessory fruit means that it is a false fruit, and the fleshy part you are eating is actually the stem of the plant. 3. The word “strawberry” has its origins in tdhe Old English words “steowberie” or “streawbelige”. There are many theories about how the word originated. 4. The strawberry is a member of the rose family, and it is the only fruit that has its seeds outside. It is the first fruit that ripens in the spring season. 5. Eat strawberries! They are good for your muscles, your brain, your heart, and they lower blood pressure, help to prevent the development of cancer and even help improve cognitive processes. They are filled with goodness and they taste best right now. Here is a recipes where you can easily incorporate your fruit, - or remember that they are best enjoyed on their own. s ie rr e b w stra affles with kwheat w ecially on a lazy c u b y rt a He , esp breakfast y boxes I love this ticks all m It . g in rn mo e and weekend indulgenc tooth that , rt fo m o c f et in terms o tiable swe g that insa appeasin ve. we all ha es 2 affles, serv Makes 4 w ut oil, ts ed cocon Ingredien cup) melt /4 n 1 / iro z e o 60 ml (2 r the waffl lespoon fo ps) almond milk, plus 1 tab cu oz / 1-1/2 375 ml (13 e-made m o eat flour ght or h u o -b p o s) buckwh sh p u c /3 -1 z/1 powder 200 g (7 o nilla ns cocoa o o sp le der 1/2 va b 3 ta king pow a b n o o 1/2 teasp d, n), scrape d vanilla pod pod (bea un ro g n o o sp or 1/2 tea lt wers pinch of sa ro-herbs, edible flo ic m l: a Option , shoput yoghurt n o c To serve o c ) z / 1 cup 230 g (8 o de home-ma on zest r o t bough m le d te ra ng s extra for 1 teaspoo syrup, plu le p a m n o o 1 tablesp drizzling d, n), scrape pod (bea pod a a ill ill n n a a v v 1/2 ground n o o sp a or 1/2 te f fresh fruit handful o rries! f fresh be Add lots o
Method Start by heating the coconut oil in a pan on medium heat with the almond milk. Place all the waffles ingredients, including the melted coconut oil and almond milk, into a bowl and mix well. Heat up the waffles iron and dab or brush with coconut oil. I use the small waffles iron where the waffles come out looking like a four-leaf clover. Ladle some of the batter mixture into the iron and cook until super crispy. While the waffles are cooking, dress up the coconut yoghurt with lemon zest, maple syrup and the vanilla, stirring to combine. Once the waffles have been cooked, serve with a dollop of the coconut yoghurt, fruits, micro-herbs and edible flowers, if using, and drizzle with maple syrup.

COSTA CUISINE
LEBANESE FOOD IS MADE FOR SHARING...WE DID IT THE LEBANESE WAY AND ORDERED A HANDFUL OF TAPAS TRADITIONALLY CALLED “MEZE”. VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE, AFTER ALL.
OCCO, on the edge of Puerto Banus, opened its doors recently and we couldn’t wait to sample the menu. The restaurant serves a cosmopolitan fusion of Lebanese and European food, from tapas to fine dining experiences. The chefs use only top quality, fresh ingredients and follow authentic recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. The beverages consist of local Lebanese wines, cocktails, and their signature Saffron drink.
may sound rather simple, but the food tasted fresh and full of flavour; it was like nothing we had tasted before. Although we were quite full after ordering enough food to feed a small village, we decided to go ahead and order desserts. We figured that since the first courses were so good the desserts would be, too, and you guessed it... amazing! Our compliments to the pastry chef for desserts that were beautifully presented and delicious. We ordered the homemade ice-cream, which was sweet, creamy and colourful. A chocolate fondant that I could have eaten a million times over, and a Lebanese pastry called baklava, made from sugar, butter and rosewater, which to me was perfection on a plate.
We couldn’t help but be awestruck when we arrived: it felt as if we had walked into a palace. OCCO’s décor is flawless. The restaurant’s interior boasts an oriental theme with a classy modern twist. It bids diners to relax in the company of welcoming hosts whose only concerns appear to be to make you feel at home and ensure that you’re given impeccable service. The staff were attentive, helpful and pretty funny, too - the bartender cracked jokes while preparing our tasty cocktails, which were beautifully presented. We recommend that you try these; they are delicious, including one unusual cocktail with a base of coffee and cornflakes - it’s like breakfast in a glass. We had never eaten Lebanese food before, so the waiters recommended some of the dishes that we should try. Lebanese food is made for sharing. Instead of ordering a main meal each, we did it the Lebanese way and ordered a handful of tapas traditionally called “meze”. Variety is the spice of life, after all.
WHETHER YOU’RE A VEGETARIAN, A PESCATARIAN, A MEAT EATER, OR YOU JUST FANCY A COUPLE OF DRINKS IN A GREAT ATMOSPHERE, YOU SHOULD REALLY CONSIDER HEADING DOWN TO OCCO.
Whether you’re a vegetarian, a pescatarian, a meat eater, or you just fancy a couple of drinks in a great atmosphere, you should really consider heading down to OCCO. A perfect venue for anyone to enjoy. Thank you for bringing your wonderful dishes to Marbella! We will certainly be back again… And again! Everything that was brought to the table tasted delightful, a real treat for our taste buds. It was a very nice change from the Chinese, Indian and Spanish style menus that we see everywhere. Our favourite dishes included Jej Msahab (chicken thighs, lemon, garlic and coriander), Sambosk (minced meat, cumin and pastry) and the Hommus (lemon, garlic and sesame pasta). It
