O
ver the last few months we have shared with you the various celebrities doing their bit to support the coronavirus pandemic, however our cover star this month, the legendary Lady Gaga, took things to the next level. Alongside the World Health Organisation, Gaga took over the major networks for a Global Citizen event celebrating essential workers and the medical, logistical and humanitarian efforts taking place across the globe. The livestream concert, entitled, One World: Together at Home, featured intimate performances from global music stars at home as they self-isolate.

Celebrity Spotlight
A whole host of A-list stars came together virtually to perform powerful renditions of their hits and put their spin on iconic covers to entertain people confined to their homes. Songs by the likes of Stevie Wonder and Taylor Swift were interspersed with messages from actors such as Matthew McConaughey and Lupita Nyong’o, as well as other figures including Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey. The event
united an impressive roster of performers, all of whom sang songs to pay tribute to healthcare workers who are on the frontlines battling COVID-19. “I feel very honoured to be a part of the World Health Organization and Global Citizens,
in the fight against COVID-19 and raising money for the Solidarity Response Fund,” said Gaga, kicking off the two-hour special that she curated. “I care so much about all of the medical workers that are putting their lives at risk for us right now.”

“Thank you with all of my heart for watching #TogetherAtHome, sharing in a global moment of kindness with each other, and spreading positive and loving intentions. We love you.” The event was hosted by three late-night fixtures: Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, and Stephen Colbert alongside friends from Sesame Street to help unify and inspire people around the world. The lineup of stars, who all performed from their homes via streams, was vast and varied: It ranged from rock icons such as The Rolling Stones and Billie Joel Armstrong to pop stars such as Billie Eilish, Lizzo, and Taylor Swift. Throughout
the special, non-performers also made appearances to highlight certain issues or introduce sets, including Beyoncé, David and Victoria Beckham, Amy Poehler, and many more. The grand finale, meanwhile, included a surprise
group performance by Céline Dion, Lang Lang, John Legend, Lady Gaga, and Andrea Bocelli that ended the special on a high note. It has since been announced that the show raised over 125 million dollars for coronavirus relief charities with the money going towards food banks and housing providers as well as tests, treatments and to support a vaccine. During the concert Beyoncé and Alicia Keys both highlighted how the disease was disproportionately affecting African Americans. Keys cited a study that found 33% of those hospitalised with the virus in the USA were black Americans despite African American counting for only 13% of the US population. “Preexisting health conditions and lack of access to information and affordable healthcare, and economic and societal circumstances, are some of the reasons why it’s most prevalent amongst communities of colour,” she said.
24
Beyoncé, who voiced support for, among others, essential workers across healthcare, sanitation, said: “Black Americans disproportionately belong to these essential parts of the workforce that do not have the luxury of working from home, and African American communities at large have been severely affected by this crisis … this virus is killing black people and in an alarmingly high rate here in America.” She cited a report that found 57% of fatal cases in her home city of Houston were African American. Lady Gaga tweeted after the show: “Thank you with all of my heart for watching #TogetherAtHome, sharing in a global moment of kindness with each other, and spreading positive and loving intentions. We love you.” Global Citizen’s activities were strongly supported by the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, who used this opportunity to call for unity and a global ceasefire in order to focus on the virus, while saluting the bravery of all the frontline workers fighting to save our lives.

The couple, known for their 17-year age gap, began dating in 2012, later tying the knot in 2015 at an intimate ceremony in their New York home. mid the coronavirus pandemic, any happy news is much appreciated and for many famous faces, a baby announcement is a much-needed moment of joy. TV presenter, Rochelle Humes announced she is expecting her third child, a baby boy with husband, Marvin Humes in the cutest post, followed the next day by a pic of her tiny bump. Glee actress, Lea Michelle revealed she is pregnant with her first child with her husband, Zandy Reich via Instagram. Michelle met Reich at her best friend’s wedding, and they got engaged in 2018. The news comes as she revealed last year, she suffers from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can sometimes make it harder for women to conceive. Supermodel, Gigi Hadid also confirmed she is expecting her first child with boyfriend, former One Direction singer, Zayn Malik. She announced the news in her interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. “I’ve got to say, congratulations on expecting a baby. This is the best news ever!” exclaimed Fallon in the interview. “Thank you so much. Obviously, we wish we could have announced it on our own terms but we’re very excited and happy and grateful for everyone’s well wishes and support,” thanked Hadid. Fallon continued, “it’s the best news that you could ever have in the entire world, even in this crazy world where any news is kind of good news.” Malik and Hadid began dating in November 2015 but broke up in March 2018 before quickly reuniting. They then broke up again in January 2019 but were back together by the end of the year. Let’s hope this little bundle of joy is just what they need to make it work.

THE GUEST LIST by Lucy Foley
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate a wedding. The groom is handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride, smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favours, the boutique whisky. The phone service may be fragile, and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed. But as the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride’s oldest friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast. And then someone turns up dead. Who didn’t wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?

Because how can she tell him that although she loves Marnie, she’s glad their daughter won’t be there to celebrate with her? 28 SUMMERS by Elin Hilderbrand
When Mallory Blessing’s son, Link, receives deathbed instructions from his mother to call a number on a slip of paper in her desk drawer, he’s not sure what to expect. But he certainly does not expect Jake McCloud to answer. It’s the late spring of 2020 and Jake’s wife, Ursula DeGournsey, is the frontrunner in the upcoming Presidential election. There must be a mistake, Link thinks. How do Mallory and Jake know each other? Flash back to the sweet summer of 1993: Mallory has just inherited a beachfront cottage on Nantucket from her aunt, and she agrees to host her brother’s bachelor party. Cooper’s friend from college, Jake McCloud, attends, and Jake and Mallory form a bond that will persevere, through marriage, children, and Ursula’s stratospheric political rise, until Mallory learns she’s dying.

WARE 1 JESSIE What’s Your Pleasure At long last, Jessie Ware is releasing her new full-length album titled What’s Your Pleasure and is arriving via PMR/Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope. The album is her fourth full length release and the proper follow up to 2017’s Glasshouse. Ware calls What’s Your Pleasure “a two-year labour of love with the dream team,” listing off album collaborators such as Shungudzo Kuyimba, Kindness, Clarence Coffee Jr., Metronomy and former BadBadNotGood sound whiz Matthew Tavares.
MRAZ 2 JASON Look For The Good Through his music, Jason Mraz has always focused on bringing optimism and positivity to the world and that’s a message we need more than ever right now. “I never imagined a year ago when I wrote this album how timely its message would be,” said Jason. “Regardless of a pandemic, people around the globe need constant hope. Period. I believe that can be self-generated by seeing good in everything, especially in the midst of tragedy and fear. I’ve always been an optimist in my life and in my music, and my hope with this album is that it inspires others to look at these dark times and witness the good that human beings are doing for their families and for each other. To look for the good is to practice gratitude. For me, I am grateful for the technologies that allow me to record and share my musical thoughts and grateful to the ears and hearts that feel them.” Look For The Good sees Jason fully embracing his career-long love for reggae music. The album features actress Tiffany Haddish and Jamaican reggae icon Sister Carol.

PAUL WELLER On Sunset
Paul Weller puts him back in business with Polydor. It follows on from 2018’s ‘True Meanings’. On Sunset is described as “a soul album. At the same time, it’s also an electronic album, an orchestral album, an album packed with masterly pop songs and heart-tugging ballads, and an album filled with touches of experimentalism,” shared Weller. It’s also an album that sees Weller taking a rare glance into the rear-view mirror as he speeds into the 2020s. As ever, Weller retains a rigorous forward-looking focus when it comes to seeking out the best contemporary sounds and music. But lyrically, Weller is also starting to look back on the past with the insight of age especially on songs like ‘Old Father Thyme’.

WHY IS THE STOCK MARKET GOING UP?
While the global economic crisis is plunging us into a deep recession and unemployment figures are reaching record highs, the stock markets are showing a remarkable recovery. What is going on? Have investors gone mad, or is the market always right? Investment experts Kaspar Huijsman and Martin Totté shine their light on the latest developments on the stock exchanges.
“
T
he so called ‘real economy’ we experience in everyday life is not the same as the one you see on the stock markets. That has become quite clear now. What you see on the stock markets has more to do with the trust that people still have in companies.” says Kaspar Huijsman. He has over 24 years experience on coaching investors and also invests on the stock markets himself. Together, with his colleagues at the offices of BinckBank in Marbella, he works on helping investors make better choices. Martin Totté is one of the presenters at the Investment Academy; “Whether you are an inexperienced investor or a seasoned trader, there is always something new to learn. Our objective is to provide people with the tools and knowledge they need.” ONLINE & OFFLINE “Our office is a place for investors to meet, to talk with other investors, have a sparring session with one of our experts to discuss their strategy or just to read the financial papers. Anybody interested in knowing more about the stock markets and economy is welcome” says Kaspar.
Connect with Kaspar Huijsman via linkedIN kasparhuijsman
The team has developed a series of online materials for people to learn more about investing. On the website you can find basic background information about financial instruments, vlogs about the latest developments on the markets, podcasts with tips and tricks and blogs about trends in investing. WHY ARE PEOPLE INVESTING NOW? The corona crisis has affected the stock markets. One would expect investors to lay low for a while but the opposite is happening right now. There are even a lot of people who are seeing opportunities and are starting to invest. Kaspar and Martin have made a list of 10 reasons why investors are joining. BUY THE DIP Optimism is an important feature of many investors. And despite the hardhitting crisis many of them believed - and continue to believe - in good returns. Not only in the long term, but also in the short term. They think it is the perfect time to get in cheaply or buy at a discount.
SEARCH FOR YIELD The current crisis has not changed the extremely low interest rates. On the contrary, the pressure on interest rates and the expectation that the historically low rates will remain for a long time, has only increased. CENTRAL BANKS The ECB, Federal Reserve and other central banks have embraced the crisis for a new and unprecedented wave of monetary easing, together with bond and corporate bond buying programs. This creates an enormous influx of new money, which again - like in recent years - largely flows into the financial markets. GOVERNMENTS LAPSE The European Commission and governments of affected countries are also spending extra trillions to mitigate and prevent the dramatic effects on the economy. Many have declared “whatever it takes”. Although they themselves are too deep in debt for this, it ensures that the economic damage is dampened and substantial extra investments are made, for example, in the healthcare sector.
@BinckBank Spain &Portugal @binckbankspain
TECH, TECH, TECH Not only is the medical sector popular with investors, but big tech in particular doesn’t appear to have been affected by the global crisis. Companies such as Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft are even seen as big winners. The fact that these so-called FAAAM companies now account for more than 20% of the S & P-500 in terms of weight and that tech also dominates the Nasdaq-100, explains these recently gained indices. CHINA AND EMERGING MARKETS Europe and the US are hit hard and have many corona related deaths, but large parts of the world are much less affected by the pandemic. For the time being, the impact in Africa and Asia has been much lower, and has subsequently done less harm to emerging markets. China has also scrambled to its feet in no time. Ultimately, this could also help accelerate the emergence of Western economies in the crisis. CHEAP ENERGY The current very low prices of energy and other raw materials certainly also assist recovery. Although some countries (including Russia) and companies (such as Shell) are hit by this, it is a godsend for other affected sectors. Low energy prices can also pull the rest of the economy out of the crisis faster and more economically. HOPE FOR A VACCINE And we could, of course, almost forget the cause of the crisis itself. The coronavirus. Despite the devastating effect on the economy and businesses, there is hope that the virus will be curbed and that we can live with it and control it with a vaccine. A vaccine will come, the only question is when. A large group of investors are already speculating on this good news, which will undoubtedly give markets a boost. LOOKING AHEAD But looking to the future is not just about corona. Investors with a longer term horizon will not be swayed by the current crisis. They look at historical figures and are convinced that equity investments will soon return to positive returns. That corporate profits and dividends will soon be normal again. They do not turn away from the market, but continue to invest - even now.
www.binckbank.com info@binckbank.com
FOMO And then there is the group of investors who saw the stock market fall, but now see it rise again quickly. And they are increasingly afraid that they will miss the ride up if they do not climb onboard in time: The Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). They do not know whether what happens is really fundamental, but it does not matter. They want to avoid the risk of missing the ride up. So they invest.
“Of course there is also a lot to say negatively about the current situation. It is therefore up to you to determine whether the above arguments are justifiably optimistic. The fact is that they have clearly moved the markets up again in the past month” according to Kaspar Huijsman.

Victoria has been a writer for the past twenty years and her work includes an environmental column, journalistic editorials and social media management. If you’ve ever read Lord of the Flies by William Golding, you will know that a group of stranded schoolboys did not fare particularly well when marooned on a deserted island. There was rivalry, malice, and even murder involved as the children sought their way to survival. The leader they elected due to his stature, confidence and strength didn’t bode well in his appointed role, and the whole thing was basically an epic shambles. Having always considered this a rather sharp, if not morbid, potential account of what could happen should this ever be a reality, I was overwhelmed with excitement to read a true account of six boys who actually did bear witness and survive a real-life shipwrecked scenario. These boys went through this real life adventure, not that it was fun and games or a simple feat, but they at least lived to tell the tale as well as restore faith in humanity on an enormous scale for the rest of us.

PARENTING
In 1965, six boys, ranging in age from 1316 years old, decided to escape and flee their catholic boarding school in Tonga for a life more interesting. They stole a local’s boat, packed what they could, and set sail for Fiji (or perhaps even New Zealand if they could find it) - or so they had hoped. They did not have maps or navigation equipment, not even a compass - just a sack full of gumption and willpower! Unfortunately they did not make it that far and were shipwrecked out in the Pacific ocean, leaving them with very little except each other.
AFTER HAVING SPENT EIGHT DAYS ON THE OPEN SEA WITH NO FOOD OR WATER THEY SPOTTED THE ISLAND OF ‘ATA. Mano, one of the older boys, attempted to swim to shore. He experienced some treacherous waters which, on top of his lack of strength due to lack of sustenance and that it was pitch dark, made the attempt extremely tough. He reached the island, as did the other five boys. From the time they arrived they split the daily chores between them in couples, each pair being allocated a specific task, which included stoking the fire, gathering and preparing food, etc. The boys managed to survive in their invented fashion for fifteen months until they were discovered by Peter Warner, an Australian businessman who was out exploring in the region.
Warner happened to notice burn marks in the rock face on the island, and, when he looked closer, saw a naked, long haired boy leap off the rock into the water and swim out to him! All six boys had been presumed dead, funerals had taken place and families had mourned their loss. So when Warner reported his finding over the radio, there was widespread shock and emotions that ran seriously high on hearing that the boys had been found.
One boy had broken his leg falling from a high rock, the other five had rescued him, dragged him to safety and secured his leg with a makeshift splint of sticks. They had also managed to keep a fire going for the full fifteen months to both serve them as a cooking source, for warmth and to signal to passing ships of their whereabouts. The boys were intuitive, they did not, as had happened in Lord of the Flies, appoint a leader, they simply communicated, cooperated, discussed what needed to be done and managed it equally. When the boy broke his leg, they simply took on his tasks and got in with it, allowing him to rest and heal. They had built a food gardn,
badminton court, makeshift gym, and plenty of shelter, as well as hollowing out receptacles to catch rain water to drink. When there was a drought they caught birds and prior to eating them, they drank their blood, and drained their eggs of liquid. They found that, as the island had previously been inhabited (one hundred years prior a slave ship had taken all the indigenous people for their sinister trade), that there were still chickens which had managed to continue breeding, there were also bananas and other fruits growing wild.
The boys pointed out, on return to their homes, that they did not exactly find happiness out there on ‘Ata, the deserted island. They were frightened and lonely and missed their families desperately, but they made the best of a terrifying situation, and set their sights on survival as a team. None of the boys had much survival practice or experience in the great outdoors and so their wits had been what made their survival possible. The one thing they had that made their continued existence possible was the art of cooperation. That, they too agree, is what kept them alive.
SO FOR ALL YOU PARENTS OUT THERE WONDERING WHAT LIFE LESSONS ARE NECESSARY TO PASS ON TO YOUR CHILDREN, I WOULD SUGGEST READING THEM THIS STORY AS OPPOSED TO LORD OF THE FLIES - OR PERHAPS BOTH TO NOTE THE COMPARISONS - AND LET THEM LEARN THAT COOPERATION, EMPATHY AND CARING FOR ONE’S NEIGHBOUR FAR OUTWEIGHS BECOMING A LEADER OR MORE POWERFUL OR STRONG THAN THE NEXT GUY. SURVIVAL (OR LET’S CALL IT LIVING HAPPILY) COMES FROM GIVING, SHARING AND RECEIVING NOT TAKING. TEACH THEM HOW TO ACCEPT EVERY INDIVIDUAL FOR WHO THEY ARE, AND SHARE THE LOAD AND BURDENS EQUALLY.

PARENTING
Grey Matters By Ian Greenland
Through gritted teeth, my partner and I were recently marvelling at some audaciously contrary behaviour from our little boy. He didn’t want to waste valuable playing time by washing his hands after doing the wee he was clearly holding in so he informed me I was going to hold his “dingle” while he went. I laughed and said “Nice try” but he insisted via increasingly incomprehensible screaming that this was going to happen. When I refused, his tortured shouts for “SOMEONE” to hold his willy drew his mum into the melee. Somehow resisting the honour he’d bestowed upon her to become some kind of second-tier dick-rack, Gemma reinforced my sentiments that in our house, NOTHING is given when it’s demanded in an aggressive manner, be that more food, an extra episode of Paw Patrol or the cupping of someone else’s genitals so they don’t have to wash their hands.... this wasn’t the response he was after. So unexpected and incandescent was his spiralling tantrum, we began desperately questioning if there was something more concerning behind it??... Subsequent investigations revealed he just really didn’t want to wash his hands! Who says toddlers are complex individuals?
contorted with rage at the injustice of the world. This, we realised, was the behaviour of a “threenager”and whilst we acknowledged it as a natural stage of child development which passes relatively quickly - “The years fly by” says everyone who’s ever spawned (... though fuck me some of the days can be long), the spectre of the actual teenage years suddenly reared its acne-riddled head. One day this sweet little ball of relentless energy and wonder will be a lanky streak of wobbly-voiced confusion All the narcissism, bad decisions and irrational moods of his toddler years but with even later bedtimes, less hugs and more access to the car keys. Whilst teenagers are currently reinventing themselves in the eyes of the world as either its best hope at a bright and inclusive future, or righteous “snowflakes” whose wokeness is a deliberately petulant affront to previous generations (Fuck you Clarkson, you still suck), the stereotype of moody, lazy, selfabsorbed, irresponsible, walking hormone clusters is enduring, and not without some merit. Nevertheless, only relatively recently neuroscience has stepped in to paint a somewhat fairer picture.
In teenagers, the brain’s frontal and pre-frontal cortices, responsible for empathy, insight and risk taking are still very much works in progress.
Efforts to placate him with platitudes such as “Come on buddy, this grumpiness is wasting far more playtime than washing our hands” and even, “We actually would have held your dingle if you’d asked again nicely but we can’t now on principle” (that particular example’s not in any of the parenting textbooks). At this point our words of reason were falling on small, deaf ears only slightly less red than the rest of his angry little face,
44
Myelin, the fatty substance which coats the brain’s synapses like insulation over wiring, builds up over time, starting from the back of the brain and developing forwards over several years. In teenagers, the brain’s frontal and
pre-frontal cortices, responsible for empathy, insight and risk taking are still very much works in progress. They simply don’t have all the neurological tools to meet adults’ often lofty expectations of how they should behave (Something I should really remind myself when shaking my head at how my onlyjust 4-year-old sometimes “chooses” to navigate the world) Sometimes it seems it’s less a case of choice and more a case of wiring. As many parents will attest, even smart teenagers make worryingly irrational decisions. In the run up to my GCSE’s I spent a lot of time tinkering with motocross bikes in my friend’s shed. We rode these helmet-less (and shirtless) across the local golf course, to the wild remonstrations of several clubwaving adults, at least one of whom was bound to know our parents – there were only 2000 people in the village where I grew up.... No wonder I felt bored enough to occasionally sniff petrol. A year after my GCSE’s I managed to top out the speedometer on my mum’s Nissan Micra – something over 115mph – mostly due to the gradient of hill I was travelling down with five young lives crammed into a car the size of a fridge.... I don’t recall if I was stoned at the time. I often was.
Nevertheless, I got 7 A*s and 3 A’s in those GCSE’s, suggesting there was actually a brain in my nut, but it was clearly prone to dysfunction... ...which makes sense when neuroscience reveals the massive rewiring procedure the brain undertakes throughout the teenage years – something akin to a a software upgrade. It becomes quicker and more sophisticated, allowing adults to better balance impulses, desires, ambitions, self-interest, morals, rules and implications, resulting in more nuanced, complex behaviours. But any software upgrade is susceptible to bugs – new pathways need time to adapt to each other and teens are constantly learning to use their new networks. This can result in the clumsy set of wild contradictions which so frequently frustrate us in teens. Of course they still have free will and are ultimately responsible for their actions, but they’re not playing with quite the level deck we might assume. Stress, fatigue and new challenges can all cause misfires. Experts agree teenage brains seek reward more hungrily than older grey matter. The emotionally reactive ventral striatum and nucleus accumbens respond to reward and its anticipation and in situations where value cues appear – eg. four friends thinking you’re cool (despite the fact it’s
Yes, they’ll fuck up and yes, they’ll frequently be ungrateful, surly or downright rude, but it’s an increasingly complex world and they’re still working it out, the gawky, spotty, brace-faced little divs.
a Nissan Micra you’re driving), these areas shout the loudest, riding roughshod over the square old prefrontal cortex’s attempts to inhibit impulse and regulate risk-taking. Adolescents are perfectly capable of making rational decisions, but in the heat of the moment, their still naïve brain circuitry means a measured appreciation of long-term consequences is frequently no match for immediate gratification. Cue dangerous driving, binge-drinking, criminal damage and several thousand doses of chlamydia.
Where expert opinion could help the bumbling teenage cause is in highlighting that far from being simply a neurological car crash-in-waiting, the teenage brain is a highly competent and adaptive organ, capable of extremely quick learning and memorisation and still open to the creation of myriad new pathways. Where parents might see a propensity
PARENTING
for unexpected and reckless endangerment, neuroscience observes a brain still willing to take risks in its pursuit of fulfilment and ultimately a longer, happier life – Statistics prove people with strong social networks live longer, healthier lives and nobody is more concerned with their social network than teens. Their frequent melodrama and heartbreaking efforts to distance themselves from us as parents are a natural function of their brains reaching out towards new horizons. Yes, they’ll fuck up and yes, they’ll frequently be ungrateful, surly or downright rude, but it’s an increasingly complex world and they’re still working it out, the gawky, spotty, bracefaced little divs. At a time of great global and neurological upheaval, when mental health can teeter on a knife edge, more than ever we as parents need to count to 10, however obnoxious our teens may be acting and let them know we’re there to hold them should they need.... just not their dingles.

BALAN OVER
BOOSTING
I recently read An Elegant Defense: The Extraordinary New Science of the Immune System by the Pulitzer Prizewinning journalist Matt Ritchel and, wow, is it filled with relevant information for today. Ritchel conducted an immense amount of research on the immune system for his book and what he found was remarkable. So many of us are living with misconceptions around immunity and I see it every day in my line of work.

CE
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
At any given moment, we are exposed to countless microbes – bacteria, viruses, you name it.
We want the components of the immune system to react strongly when it is faced with a viable threat, but it is equally as important for the immune system to stand down when appropriate. When the immune system overreacts when it should not, that is when autoimmune issues like rheumatoid arthritis arise where the immune system becomes unnecessarily active in the joints and other parts of the body. This is an example of the immune system’s elegant defense falling out of balance and this state of unbalance does not only affect people with autoimmune diseases. This is so relevant to the current state of the world in this unprecedented pandemic because what is going on in ICUs across the globe has a lot to do with unbalanced immunity. Believe it or not, many of the people struggling in intensive care are not in as much danger from the pneumonia and various respiratory illnesses that they are experiencing. The reason why they are facing such a high level of threat is due to the immune response in their lungs. Many COVID-19 patients’ immune systems are overreacting and flooding the lungs with too many immune cells. It is a fervent reaction of an aging and out of balance immune system. So, what does balance within the immune system look like? Essentially, immune balance means that when our immune defenses react to rid our bodies of the pathogens of concern, they do so without overreacting. The immune system
Rather than putting so much of a focus on boosting the immune system, there are steps that we can take to better balance it. There are three major strategies that Ritchel suggests we focus on for immune balance: nutrition, sleep, and stress. These areas of focus are important now during the Coronavirus pandemic, but also at every other point in time. Dr. Anthony Fauci, immunologist and Coronavirus Task Force Expert has explained that we do not have any magic bullets for immune healing. There is no single food or supplement that can immediately balance the immune system. However, a natural and balanced diet can certainly help to support immune function. It has been shown that consuming unnatural processed foods can unbalance the immune system over time.

should tread lightly on constant patrol, yet only respond with the precise amount of force necessary to remove the danger without harming the rest of the body.
T HI
For a long time, it was believed that we should be actively strengthening our immune systems for them to perform adequately. While it is true that some people have overreactive immunity and others have underactive defense systems, in general, the focus should be more on balancing the system than boosting it.
JU
ST
FOR
Ritchel explains that stress management is the single most important strategy for immune balance, and I could not agree more. The purpose of our autonomic nervous system (ANS) (think fight or flight response) is to trigger the release of stress hormones that heighten our focus and allow blood to pump to our legs in the event of an emergency. In primitive times, this response would be activated when we were faced with a predator that we needed to outrun. However, these days, our ANS is activated by anything that we feel threatened by – that may mean an argument with a loved one, a stressful scenario at work, or an influx of Coronavirus in our community. Because of this, our stress response is in constant overdrive, which causes our immune system to fall out of balance and make us more vulnerable to illness. Lowering this stress response is key to managing this outbreak along with any other immune-threatening issues that we might face. One way that I have been combatting stress in this strange time is by breaking up my meditation practice. Instead of doing a long meditation in the morning, I have been splitting up my practice into shorter 5-minute sessions throughout the day. That way, I give my body regular breaks from the flood of stress hormones.

Techniques like breathwork, gentle yoga, reiki, meditation, and energy work before sleep are critical to improve sleep. Exercise is also crucial – but only if you are feeling healthy. Regular physical activity is critical for stress reduction and immune balance. However, despite common misconceptions, if you exercise when you are under the weather, it does more harm to your immune system than good.
The moral of the story is that it is more important now than ever before to treat yourself with kindness and gift yourself with self-care. Eat a balanced, natural, and whole food diet, continue exercising regularly if you are feeling up to it, and practice stress-reducing activities (especially before bed). A blend of these strategies will help your immune system stay balanced.

It’s currently the most researched topic with sales of home pleasure kits and saucy outfits on the rise so I thought why not share my passion for cannabinoids on the subject and got a few of my cannabis babes to give their opinion too!
So how can CBD help with sex? We already know that medical experts have tapped into CBD’s healing properties due to the fact that it works with our endocannabinoid system. The plants phytocannabinoids respond to our receptors CB1 and CB2 which help reduce inflammation, improve gut health, calm nerves, enhance sleep and can also give your sex life a boost! Cannabis has been very well documented in a number of erotic historic ceremonies from the Roman ages up until today where it is still used in Tantric sex rituals in India. So let’s look at how and why it works.
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
Cannabinoids as an Aphrodisiac CBD can be used as an aphrodisiac by consuming it in various ways from taking drops, applying lubricants or eating cannabis chocolates. The cannabinoids dilate your blood vessels, allowing fresh oxygenated blood to flow more easily and is associated with increased arousal and stimulation.
What Do The Cannabis Babes Think? Once you realise how wonderful combining cannabis into your sex life is there is no turning back. I spoke to three women from the cannabis industry to share their testimonies with you!
“Euphoria on another level.”
Stimulating Sensations Cannabinoid receptors are found in the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, vagina and vulva, this is why they play a significant role in the pleasures and pain associated with sex. It can improve low libido and the inability to achieve orgasms. Men that experience issues with erectile dysfunction may also benefit from using CBD as it increases blood flow and nerve sensation. This can help promote sexual pleasure and intensify orgasms.
Reducing Sexual Discomfort CBD may also be able to help with pain during sex as it is an anti-inflammatory. Applying CBD topically can also help women who experience painful sexual intercourse due to vaginal irritation or even dryness.
Relaxing the Mind One of the many ways that people use CBD is to help fight anxiety and improve their mental state. Using it in the bedroom can create a feeling of calm and relaxation therefore allowing you to have enhanced sexual pleasures.
Enlightening Foreplay Used as a lubricant CBD can enhance the sensation and climax. This is because it can repair tissue damage and improve blood flow to the genitals. Men and women have also claimed that it can enhance their sex drive.
Massaging with CBD
Micha Dorch aka Lady Silverstoned is a Swedish cannabis podcaster and content creator. Check out her recent podcast on the shady side of the cannabis industry to discover more.
Ieva B the owner of the prestigious The Green Boutique a Private Members Social Cannabis Club in Barcelona quoted “Euphoria on another level.”
“CBD helps to maximise pleasure and sensitivity as well as fostering a relaxed environment, my clients are experiencing better orgasms and enhanced duration.” Tara has recently headed TLE in London, she’s currently working with clients using CBD for yoga and to improve their sexual experiences. “It’s so important that we talk about female pleasure, whether you share it with someone or if it’s only with yourself.”
Cannabinoids are the peoples best friend they can help with every aspect of modern day life helping to ease anxiety reduce stress and indeed promote a better and healthier sex life. If you want to find out more about cannabis please do not hesitate to contact us we are here to help!
Using a CBD massage oil helps to offer topical relief as well as a natural energy as it works into the body’s largest receptor the skin. To get your partner in the mood massage their body with CBD massage oil and let the magic begin! It can also be used for self pleasure!

THE UTLIMATE
Our situation is somewhat bizarre. We are all ectoparasites, living on the surface of an itinerant pioneer, careering through uncharted space at breakneck speeds, spinning and turning as we go. We are not aware of any destination or goal, we can not affect our path and today, we are located in a totally different space to yesterday and we will never return.
W
e are all 100% dependent on The Big Ball we live on and we have no idea what we are doing here and where our host is taking us, if anywhere at all. In the big scheme of things, our individual lives are as uncertain as they are unnecessary. We are not as important as we like to think. In fact, unless you are tending to the needs of your host in some way, frankly, you are either irrelevant or just a pain in the ass, a thorn in the side of your provider. What are the needs of our Mother Earth? What does she require of us? I asked my own mother this question in my early 20’s, when I desperately wanted to enter a period of introspection that I suspected might continue for years and result in me disconnecting from the family circles. Like any good mother, she told me that she just wanted me to be happy. After I pointed out that this was a hope for me, rather than a requirement of me, she gave it a second thought and decided that she had none. She had no real requirements of me whatsoever. Likewise, our Great Mother requires nothing of us. We are on a ride, a freebee. We are on the back of someone so much larger and we can do precisely nothing for her.
SHE IS SO MAGNIFICENT, SO HUGE AND DYNAMIC, WITH SUCH INTELLIGENCE THAT WE HAVE BARELY BEGUN TO REALISE HER SIGNIFICANCE TO US, LET ALONE UNDERSTAND HER OR COMMUNICATE WITH HER. The idea that we can assist Planet Earth in some way is insane. We have nothing to give her. All we have to offer is taken from her. We are her. Our duty is to live with her, her way, in unison and harmony – and to enjoy the ride, even celebrate the opportunity she has given us to exist on her.
54
TEACHER
But we have misconceived an idea of who we are and it has caused us to imagine that we are not a dependent part of Mother Earth, that we are in some way more than that. It is laughable we can deduce that our individuality is more important than our collective nature. It really highlights our lack of intelligence and intuition. Instead we focus on developing our intellect. We are mind-heavy. Trying to know about stuff, we rub our chins and think a lot. We dig around and study, stare up to the skies and observe and we write books to document things, when almost everything is subjective. Certainly everything is subject to change and everything changes constantly and so in truth, there are very few actual “facts”. What we call facts are just descriptions of what we think we know about something, that we can not disprove. This of course does not mean to say that any “fact” may one day be disproved or “developed” and then, what was a fact becomes “how we used to think” and so it goes on. I make no apology to academics when I point out that they are on a fruitless path towards madness unless they are developing their intelligence alongside their intellect.
Intellect is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Intelligence is leaving it out of the fruit salad!
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
One of the hardest things to accept is that we can not know everything. Our brains are not big enough to be able to perceive this experience as anything more than a “mystery”. This is our best perception, or acceptance. It is a mystery, to us at least and it always will be. The deeper we go, the less it makes sense. It is like ants trying to perceive our world, it is not possible. It is not there designation. Similarly, no matter how much we develop our brain, there are much higher forces at play all around us, that are well beyond anything we can think about or “feel” in the common sense and yet they dictate our lives. Like the dimensions we live in and the forces that allow us to function within them, as we hurtle through space.
JUST SOME MORE FOOD FOR THOUGHT...I OFTEN WONDER IF IT IS OUR GREAT MOTHERS MOTIONS WITHIN A LARGER CONTEXT OR BODY, THAT ACTUALLY CREATES THE VERY DIMENSIONS THAT PERCEIVE AND MAYBE EVEN SOME MORE THAT WE DON’T? The point is, while we might as well enjoy the ride we have been blessed with, surely we have to listen to the only request Mother ever has of us and clean up after ourselves! Those of you that ignore her or can not hear her, even when she shouts. Those that have not figured out why cleanliness is regarded as next to godliness and continue to leave a mess in the wake of your actions take heed.

This is extremely unintelligent behaviour and my guess is it will only be tolerated to a point. If we dirty up the surface and affect the atmosphere of the planet too much, everyone will suffer the consequences of Mother shaking us off like an infestation, no exceptions. Gaia is obviously undertaking a journey and we are with her. Whether or not there is a reason or a destination, we don’t know. If she really is predominantly feminine and she seems to be, it is likely there is no reason for this magnificent movement. The journey may be the point. Purpose will most likely be found within the experience. If we want it to continue, our only duty is to clean up after ourselves, beginning at the core of our experience, our own body. Because the truth is that we’re always succeeding in life, and it’s up to us to take charge and steer our minds away from worry, no matter what is going on around us. Whatever direction we choose to focus on, we always succeed in attaining, and then of course ultimately also living. Inner peace comes when we’re present in the Now, while the more you allow your mind to stray away from Here and Now and into an imagined, and oftentimes fearful future, the more inner turmoil you experience too. Be very protective of the messages you allow into your consciousness, especially during times of uncertainty and challenges.
Two things you can do to protect yourself: In times of stress it’s best to stay away from watching the news too much (and discussing them with others) as it will only cause your stresslevels to increase. Also refrain from discussing your challenges with people who live in a fear-based consciousness – they will only reinforce and empower the worry that you are already experiencing. Another way to protect your mind and inner well-being in the midst of chaos and uncertainty is to immediately say within yourself that you don’t agree with the types of thoughts that brings stress. Immediately when they come up, redirect and literally tell your mind what you choose to believe and focus on instead. We’re much more likely to make mistakes and hasty decisions that are not right for us when our actions come from a place of fear, and it certainly doesn’t help if you take advice from people who are living their life from a limited, fear-based level of consciousness.
58
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
The world is full of people with limiting beliefs about all kinds of things, so when you’re in a vulnerable phase you’re also more sensitive to other people’s doubts and thoughts about how “difficult” and how “impossible” things are right now. Don’t allow your mind to take those things in. There is no need to let other people’s beliefs become your belief.
urn away from the world for a moment and tune into your inner voice instead. Tell your heart everything you’re experiencing and feeling and be completely honest and allow yourself to feel what you feel, and then ask yourself this question: “What is my heart saying about all this? What is my true, inner being saying about this?” and then listen to what comes up. It helps even more with the connection if you hold your hands over your heart when you ask this. Your inner being knows everything about where you are in relationship to everything else, and it knows exactly
what you need and how to bring everything and everyone together to help you move forward in life.
whatever goes on in your life and in whatever phase or process you find yourself in, remember this always;
When you turn away from the world and inwards towards your inner being instead, you’re able to get back in alignment with peace again and this will allow you to come into a receptive mode where you can receive whatever it is that the next step will be. Some kind of direction or guidance will come; you might be inspired or nudged to do something, go somewhere, or contact someone, or something will just happen out of the blue that takes you to the next level and phase of your life. All things become possible when you’re in alignment with the flow of life, so When you’re in alignment there’s always an underlying peace that holds everything no matter how chaotic your outer life may seem or feel, so trust the unfolding and stay on the side of possibility!
The small self has a lot of explanations and stories to tell but none of them are even the slightest believable when we begin to examine them and looking closely at what is actually happening and what our true immediate needs are. Not what our needs might be tomorrow or next week, but Right Now. Many times we can honestly say that “Right Now, I’m okay”. We don’t know enough to worry. We don’t know what will happen tomorrow, or even five minutes from now. Something amazing might be around the corner. We don’t know. THE ONLY THING WE KNOW FOR SURE, IS WHAT IS RIGHT NOW. We don’t have access to our inner well-being and peace when we get stuck in a fearful image of the future, but we have the power to disrupt the old thought-patterns by redirecting the mind back to the present moment again – and into the realm of possibility!
Fear always has a story around whatever is going on and most of the time it’s the story that scares us and not what is happening in actuality. The story is a meaning we have given our situation or circumstances and it’s based in the thoughts and beliefs we have, but it’s just an interpretation made through the viewpoint of the small, scared ego-self. When we are more concerned about alignment and staying present with what is actually happening, then it’s easier to not get entangled in the fearful stories of the mind. And the quicker we can move away from the story and back to inner calm and peace, the faster we’re able to transcend any challenges we might be in the midst of too.

A new standarD FOR Marbella’s property market
B
right is a development company that has a radically different approach. And in just over a year since their arrival to the Costa del Sol they are already creating waves in Marbella’s property market. One of the company’s slogans “Improving Quality of Life through Design” explains perfectly how they are shaking things up. Bright creates sustainable homes that improve quality of life through pure design – home offices where isolation is not a factor, kitchens that inspire a healthier lifestyle and bedroom suites designed for easy sleep.
66
Bright was set up shortly after its CEO, Michael Rodziewicz, met his counterpart in UDesign, Jason Harris, asking for help in turning his Marbella house into a home. Michael had searched, unsuccessfully, for a cool, contemporary villa that looked as good inside as out, and ended up buying in the traditional Andalusian style. So far, so good...well, good enough. That is, until he purchased a truckload of furniture that should have fitted in, both physically and aesthetically, but didn’t. Creative Director Jason did his thing, and the problem was solved. The Bright partnership was born.
Bright creates sustainable homes that improve quality of life through pure design
Over the last 10 years, UDesign has worked on some of the best addresses in the world, from mountain retreats in Verbier, to listed buildings in London’s Belgravia and magnificent estates in La Zagaleta. Now, as the first developer to bring sustainable architecture to enhance design-led projects to an area like the Costa del Sol, Bright is a trailblazer. Michael puts it this way: “a great home should improve your quality of life, probably more than any other single factor. Together, we’re making this a reality”. Bright is currently developing two sustainable projects in Marbella:

Villa Alcuzcuz, 1,323 square-metres of exquisite design, environmentally sustainable architecture and stunning views which was honoured at the International Property Awards last year with “Best Architecture Single Residence, Spain” and then with the top award “Best Architecture Single Residence, Europe”. Villa Alcuzcuz is Marbella’s first avant garde luxury house designed and built to Passive House Regulations and Standards. Passive house basically means energy efficiency to an exceptionally high degree. The villa has a very low carbon footprint and uses up to 75% less energy than a standard construction.

project of 18 design-led, sustainable villas located on the highest villa plot in the mountainside estate of Real de la Quinta. This 200 hectare residential country club lies in the foothills of the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range overlooking Marbella. The setting is unique, with Marbella’s iconic La Concha mountain on one side and the exclusive La Zagaleta Country Club & Golf estate on the other, bordering a UNESCO biosphere reserve and yet just a 15 minute drive from Marbella.

a true haven where comfort and quality of life is assured, regardless of what might be going on in the wider world.
Bright’s 7-point manifesto ensures that every home they create adheres to their design-led philosophy and sustainable ethos: 1. Design Comes First
Creative design is the basis for everything the company does. Bright connects the spaces in a home, not only visually but physically. Their designs don’t just look good, they feel good as well.
2. Exceptional Locations
All their plots are in visually stunning environments with magnificent views.
3. Nature Takes Centre Stage Nature is always at the heart of their projects and within the boundaries of their homes. Sustainable architecture and design ensures that nature is protected.
4. Luxury is in the detail
Bright’s homes are exceptional in their design & craftmanship. Their own bespoke furniture sits naturally alongside the world’s top brands.
5. The inside defines the outside
Design starts on the inside with the outside simply being an extension of the interior. The two areas seamlessly merge into one space.
6. Designed to entertain
All Bright homes incorporate an entertainment space - a space to have fun, because these days staying in is the new going out!
7. A Holistic Approach
Design is a concept, not a set of drawings. In Bright homes, all parts of the whole are designed as works of art that complement the whole. Vista Lago Residences offers a lot more than a five-star lifestyle and magnificent views. It also offers the priceless commodities of space in abundance and clean air in beautiful natural surroundings. The amenities at Real de la Quinta combined with the facilities of each individual villa – gym,
private pool and garden, large terraces, entertainment rooms and offices – mean that owners would never need to leave the resort unless they wanted to. It’s an oasis, a true haven where comfort and quality of life is assured, regardless of what might be going on in the wider world.

Digital Punk Cocktail Well well, little did we know that just after International Marbella’s Coffee Cocktail on the office terrace, the whole country and subsequently Europe went into Covid-19 lockdown! A complete shock, not just to my system, but to all dear friends, clients and colleagues likewise. All staff sent home except for Laura who became my quarantine guest. What to do? – creative thinking is a must!, especially with future weeks of no events; our Gala Golf Tournament at Royal Las Brisas Golf Club and our Fusion of Arts Cocktail with entertainment from Thomas Eje’s Las Vegas Show – both postponed till further notice. And with my Spring-20 Sex and the City Ladies lunch also cancelled, I had to find a solution... HOUSE PARTY APP! On a Friday at 6pm my lady friends were invited for a “Digital Punk Cocktail”. Every one spent hours dressing up with full blown 80’s make-up and outfits to match. How much fun we had!, two hours of laughter and gossiping. What a difference from Spring-19 lunch hosted at the fabulous Casa Loriana. Without a doubt, during these long lonely weeks seeking companionship from friends, technology has been a huge help... I can’t wait for us to meet in person again!

Life in Lockdown Life in lock-down will be remembered by us all and without a doubt it will go down in history books in years to come. What did people do? How did they survive with freedom taken away from all? Well, there was the clapping at 8pm, Facetiming as a key source of communication and not to forget, Netflix! All homes were sparkling clean with every corner vacuumed and every item of clothing ironed. In my case, all the above of course, but Paint-by-Numbers became an obsession!, my definite weapon against boredom. My creation will be on my wall soon... It’ll be my personal memento of the Corona Pandemic.

extreme? Absolutely not. It depends on the route, of course. For example, a trip from Scandinavia to Málaga could be as little as 1.750€ per person. To ensure the best prices possible we have now managed to source clients and companies who wish to charter their own planes thus bypassing agency handling fees. All our jets are in legal compliance of aviation regulations and staffed by professional crews. At its debut in 2009 the SLS AMG was an impressive first attempt at a bespoke super sports car for the high-performance division of Mercedes-Benz, but it also felt like a work in progress that did not light my fire. That said, all the right basic ingredients were there, and I was confident that the SLS would eventually come good. ‘Eventually’ turned out to be late in 2013 when I was introduced to the SLS AMG Black Series at Paul Ricard Circuit. Within half a lap I knew that the SLS was finally cooking with gas, and the Black Series flew straight into my Top Ten “Best Supercars” list. Its greater engine power notwithstanding, the ability of the Black Series to really engage the driver is rooted in its chassis, whose finesse took the front-mid-engine, rear transaxle layout of the SLS to its logical conclusion, at last realising its full potential. If the plain vanilla SLS is dynamite, the Black Series version is a suitcase nuke. This is definitely not one of those nebulous marketing exercises with a few bits of carbon-fibre and 20hp extra, where you struggle to feel the difference. Those differences are as clear as night and day, and the extra cash over the plain vanilla SLS gets you 60 more horses and 70 less kilograms. Think 630hp at 7,400rpm and 634 Nm of torque at 5,500rpm blasting 1,550kg of alloy, carbon-fibre and steel to 100km/h in 3.6 sec, and on to 315km/h. While the modified reciprocating parts are busy turning air and petrol into speed, the higher pitched tone of the titanium exhaust delivers crisper fundamentals to a baritone singing voice that stretches even further up the scale than before. The SLS Black Series possesses a NASCAR grade rolling thunder soundtrack that shakes the very earth from the moment you press the Start button. And when you finally turn it off after a hard blast, the sudden silence is just as shattering.

The weight loss programme for this aluminium space-framed and bodied car embraces a lot of carbon-fibre. This is used structurally for parts like the rear bulkhead, and strategically for the underbody diagonal braces, torque tube, the bonnet, and the lightweight race seats in the cabin.
behaviour, and you have to realise this and work to alter the front-end behaviour as described above. Because the Black Series is like a racecar in this respect, you have to think like a race driver to get the best from it.
The carbon-fibre torque tube saves 13.3kg, and is 50-percent lighter than the normal aluminium equivalent. The 13kg titanium exhaust, made by Boysen, is also half the weight of its stainless-steel counterpart, and even the lithium ion battery offers a near 50-percent weight saving.
On public roads, the differences perceived through the steering and the seat of your pants compared to the standard SLS are also palpable.
The big ceramic brakes that give the Black Series its strong and tireless retardation also offer a big unsprung weight saving, while the lightweight race style bucket seats are worth a few less kilos. All this combines to make a night and day difference to the way the car accelerates, turns and stops. This is an SLS with the dial turned up to 11. Out on track, first impressions are of a car with noticeably better throttle response and stronger thrust through the gears, while the brilliance of the chassis tuning shines through brightly. The uprated springs and dampers keep the car flat through the bends, while the active damping system rolled out with the SLS Roadster’s debut means a less punishing ride on public roads. The small torsional dampers AMG has installed to limit movement of the motor in front and the gearbox at the rear under lateral loadings, help to keep the car nicely trimmed from turn in to the exit of a bend. Along with the zero to 60-percent locking limited slip differential, these ingredients work with the trackday Cup tyres to eke out higher mechanical grip and lateral acceleration than the standard or GT spec SLS models. As the suspension set-up is track biased and tuned to work with Cup tyres, you have to treat the Black Series like a racecar. If you brake in a straight line before turning in you will encounter some understeer. To get everything to gel you need to be aggressive but smooth, trail braking into the bends, and rolling progressively onto the throttle to maximise front-end grip. Then the car rotates into the bend perfectly with the nicely damped rear axle following in unison. At least that is how it initially appears. In actual fact, it is the stability of the rear axle that sets the stage for the chassis

The front end is pointier, the Black Series turning in with greater incisiveness, but not to the point where it feels over-sensitive. Even more so than the stock SLS, the Black Series is always on, its sharp racebred chassis constantly interacting with the surface of the tarmac, and its big naturallyaspirated V8 always bubbling away just in front of you like a volcano on the point of erupting. You will never fall asleep behind the wheel of this machine!

GT R
The flagship AMG GT carries an ‘R’ after its name and even after a few kilometres behind the wheel on public roads, it is apparent that while it shares a lot of DNA with the SLS Black Series, they are vastly different characters. Compared to its rumbustious predecessor, the GT R gives you the option of a relatively ‘tame’ mode. While it shows you varying degrees of rampant in its Sport+, M, and RS settings, if you dial everything right back it is actually quite refined by super sports car standards. In Comfort mode, it will cruise at 120km/h in relative silence where the Black Series is always grumbling away in your ears. This makes the GT R the better car in which to undertake a long journey. Add to that the fact that its hatchback arrangement can swallow a lot more luggage than the boot of the SLS, and you have a natural super sports car for a dash across Europe. On narrow country roads, physical width and that long nose in front of you are what govern your pace. However, the active rear wheel steering immediately makes the GT R feel more agile and more able to exploit its power than the SLS.

That said, the AMG engineers have done a very impressive job of removing almost any vestige of turbo lag from the GT R’s motor. Having 4.0 litres of V8 is a good start, and the relatively high 9.5:1 compression ratio helps too. The big numbers produced by the M178 bi-turbo 3,982cc V8 motor are 585hp at 6,250rpm, with 700Nm of torque between 1,900 and 5,500rpm.
Throttle response is 90% as sharp as the naturally aspirated 6,208cc engine that powers the SLS Black Series, with a torque curve that swells to greater heights much lower down in the rev band. The AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed dual-clutch transmission had 0.7kg peeled off its dual-mass flywheel for even faster shifting times and sharper throttle response. Add a taller first gear and shorter seventh and final drive ratios and you land a 3.6 sec 0-100km/h sprint, with a 318km/h top speed. With its aluminium space frame, steel hatchback and magnesium front slam panel, the standard AMG GT/S bodyshell weighs 231 kg, the lightest in this segment. The GT R takes this to the next level with carbon-fibre front wings, roof, propeller shaft, torque tube, tunnel cross brace, and front section stiffening braces. The wider front carbon-fibre wings and aluminium rear wings add 57mm to the total width of the GT R, while in total, the above lightweight materials result in a DIN kerb weight of 1,555kg. This weight saving of 15kg over the less powerful GT S is mostly from the area above the waistline. A stiff structure offers a more stable platform for improved handling, and here the GT R scores with the use of a carbon-fibre tunnel underbody cross-brace that adds 7.5 percent to torsional rigidity. As the wider front track and larger, stickier rubber feed more loads into the suspension and bodyshell, they have to be countered by diagonal braces that reinforce the front section of the car.

TORQUE TALK
Although the basic AMG GT/S has a race-style coil-over suspension system, this has been heavily revised for more intense track use. The coil-over spring and damper units are fully adjustable for ride height, and damper bounce and rebound control. As with a racecar, this allows the driver to set the car up for a personal driving style or an individual track. That said, the adaptive damping system is still adjustable at the touch of a button on the AMG Drive Unit, or through the AMG Dynamic Select drive modes of Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. The search for high strength and lower unsprung weight has resulted in suspension components like the wishbones, steering knuckles and hub carriers on both axles being forged from high-grade aluminium. The lower wishbones of the rear suspension are now Rose-jointed to remove any play under load. This means increased precision in fast bends, and a more consistent and predictable seat of the pants feel. To save weight and reduce understeer the solid rear anti-roll bar of the GT/S is replaced with a largerdiameter hollow tube. At 10.0J x 19-inch and 12.0J x 20-inch,
94 94
the bespoke lightweight alloy wheels are now one-inch wider front and rear and shod with 275/35ZR19 and 325/30ZR20 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. Behind these big wheels the standard brakes use 390mm/360mm diameter front/rear vented steel discs. The optional carbon-ceramic brake system features massive 402mm vented discs in front with 360mm discs at the rear, and promise both better resistance to fade and a weight saving of 17kg across the four corners. Clever wind tunnel work resulted in active and passive aerodynamic measures that dramatically increase downforce with a slight improvement to the 0.29 drag coefficient of the standard GT/S. These are mostly hidden under the GT R’s purposeful looking skin, which starts with the new nose that gives this car its distinctive and more purposeful demeanour. The wider front wings that flank the sleeker, more arrow-like profile of the new nose are made from carbon-fibre. Adding 23mm to each side of the GT R’s front they cover the wider front track and the fat Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber that together confer better turnin, traction and stability.
TORQUE TALK
Active rear wheel steering enhances low-speed agility and high-speed stability. Collectively, this and the wider tracks, uprated suspension kinematics, sticky Michelins and aerodynamic downforce make a huge difference to the way the GT R goes, steers, corners and stops. Fans of drifting will like the electronic limited slip differential whose locking action spans a 0-100% range that is driver controllable in Race mode via a yellow rotary knob on the centre console. This provides nine variations of slip angle according to how sideways you like your action. In the final analysis, the GT R is undoubtedly the more complete and three-dimensional performer of this pair. This is no surprise considering the timeline separating their development, and the fact that the lessons learnt in developing the SLS Black Series were the starting point for the AMG GT. The SLS AMG Black Series was an amazing car in its time that engaged its driver in a way that the standard car did not. It showed off the full potential of the formula developed with the tools available to the engineers at the time. As the next evolutionary step in AMG’s super sports car journey, the GT took that knowledge and ran with it, at the same time creating a more civilised and rounded machine that could be almost all things to all men. However, for the really hard-core driver it did not quite have the edge of the previous Black Series. The AMG GT R provides that edge without significantly compromising the everyday usability of the standard model, whose talents are much more rounded than the SLS AMG that went before it. Meanwhile, the rear-wheelsteering and aero make a huge difference to the GT R’s range of talents on fast roads, but more especially on track, where they take its driving dynamics to the next level.

hen people hear the word camino, most will think of the trail that crosses northern Spain ending in Santiago de Compostela. El Camino de Santiago (the Path of Saint James) has been a popular pilgrim trail for both the faithful and repentant sinners since the 9th Century, so much so that by the 12th Century over two hundred thousand peregrinos (pilgrims) were registered in a single year! Today, the historical path is more prominent than ever, as people travel from all over the world to walk the famous pathway. But even The Camino has many incarnations, or many caminos as it were. The most well known include the Camino francés, the Camino del norte, el Camino portuguese, el Primitivo and la Ruta de la Plata. One might say that all roads lead to Santiago de Compostela, since one can start walking almost anywhere in Europe and end up there. There is even a Camino starting in Trondheim in central Norway!
So why are there so many caminos? To find an answer we first have to look at the meaning of the word. Camino in Spanish can mean road, path, track or even highway. The word also has a less geographical and more symbolic signification of the way, in that someone has lost or found their way. With such a wide range of interpretations, a camino can really be anything. In fact there are hundreds of thousands of caminos in Spain, the vast majority of which do not have the same prestige or fame as the Caminos referred to above. But in my view, every camino has its graces. Andalucía is full of long and short, rural and quasi-urban caminos and we have had the privilege of exploring quite a
100
SOME OF OUR ANDALUSIAN CAMINOS MIGHT HAVE BEEN STARTED BY NEANDERTHALS OR HOMINIDS IN PREHISTORIC TIMES. few. Most will start in a village, leading one through farmland past natural landmarks on the way to another village. Some have been around for centuries, following natural canyons and valleys to ease the passage for its users. Many would have started out as trade routes for arrieros or muleteers, the traditional traveling merchants that went from community to community carrying their wares on the back of donkeys. Some Andalucian caminos also have religious significance; such as the paths pilgrims took to get to the annual Rocío celebrations, which thousands of people still do today. Other caminos go back to the time when the Romans ruled the Iberian Peninsula. One such trail, which we often take, actually used to be the main walkway from Ronda to Gibraltar. Talking about Gibraltar, lets dig further back in history. Since the very first human types to enter Europe came by crossing the Straight of Gibraltar (possibly walkable during the ice ages?), some of our Andalusian caminos might have been started by Neanderthals or Hominids in Prehistoric times. We are talking more than a hundred thousands years ago… One clear advantage of choosing a less famous camino is that it will be less crowded. It is certainly better to share the path with fewer trailblazers when it comes to appreciating our natural surroundings. Even those of us who are not real pilgrims can have quite a spiritual experience simply walking a camino, enjoying the peace and quiet. And peaceful it is. On most trails we frequent here in the province of Malaga, we are hard pressed to meet a handful
of walkers during a full day of hiking. On some, we do not meet a soul, other than possibly a flock of sheep. You may wonder about wild and dangerous animals on the more remote Andalusian trails. Toros bravos (the animals used for bull fighting) and mostly, and thankfully, behind fences. There are times when you have to cross a field with cattle, but if you walk quietly along without meeting their gaze and close the gate after you, you shouldn’t have any problems. Years ago, packs of wolves and roaming wild dogs were a threat to Camino pilgrims, as mentioned in the books on the subject by Paulo Coelho and Shirley MacLaine. But these days wolves on El Camino are things of the past. Most wild animals in Andalucía have sadly been hunted to extinction. The original indigenous Iberian wolves and the Iberian bears are long gone from these regions. Even the wild goats that have been reintroduced into the Andalusian sierra try to stay as far away from humans as possible and offer no threat. When it comes to wild boars however, these are animals that you do not want to have a close encounter with, as they have been known to attack humans.
They are mostly out digging for truffles and roots at night, so meeting them in the wild is quite rare. But if you do, head for the closest tree… What are the other potential dangers of choosing a more remote camino here in the Spanish south? There is of course the risk of getting lost or hurt, getting a sun-stroke or being caught in a storm, but these are all part of being in nature. Bringing enough water and the right equipment, as well as knowing the landscape or bringing a guide, is a must in the sierra.
These days wolves on El Camino are things of the past. Most wild animals in Andalucía have sadly been hunted to extinction. The original indigenous Iberian wolves and the Iberian bears are long gone from these regions.
Regarding reptiles, Andalucía has only one venomous snake species. I have nearly stepped on snakes sun-tanning on the trail on several occasions, though I do not think they were the poisonous adders. Since the snakes were more shocked than I by our meeting, they were off before I could verify further. Walking at night with headlights, we also see alacranes, or scorpions with their tails lifted in aggressive attack mode. These might not be as deadly as in other countries, but should understandably be avoided. Similarly, one should not dig around too much in stones for the same reason. Finally, insects pose no threat to Andalucian trail walkers, but the flies can be very pesky in the hotter months. Though the majority of trails here are quite well marked, you can loose your way, or your camino. The most well signed and best kept trail in the territory is la Gran Senda de Málaga (the Great Malaga Path or GR 249 for those who like looking at maps). This pioneering project is like an Andalucian alternative to The Camino, just without the pilgrims. The 660 km, 35-stage triangular trail passes through 51 mostly rural municipalities, 4 nature parks and 2 nature reserves along the coast and the inland of Malaga province. We have done several of these stages, usually covering a couple of sections in a one-day hike, and would fully recommend it.
The Gran Senda connects to what is called the Camino Mozárabe de Málaga, which ultimately leads to, you guessed, El Camino de Santiago. In addition, the Gran Senda also forms part of the European Grand Tour trail network, which crosses the Mediterranean region and ends up in Greece. In other words, there is no end to caminos for those of us who like trotting about. Let me be perfectly clear though. The Andalusian caminos do not have the same perks that the official El Camino does, nor will you encounter the same infrastructures. There are some organized walking tours, although I expect there won’t be the option of having your backpacks brought from stop to stop. While most Andalusian villages will have some sort of Casa Rural where one can spend the night, these might or might not be open or have beds available, so book ahead. You will hardly ever find the multi bunk bed Albergues or Hostales you can stay in along El Camino, nor can you expect to pay less than 10 euros per night. However, you should be able to find some kind of reasonable accommodation. Besides, there is something to be said for having your own room and private bathroom at the end of a day’s walk… Each Andalucian village offers some services and amenities, but not every pueblo will have food stores open on holidays, nor special pilgrims’ menus or restaurants that serve breakfast for road-weary wanderers at the crack of dawn. There are usually several bars in
101
every little town, but the menu might be more liquid than solid. Likewise, there is no certificate or pilgrim passport to be stamped in every town. Nor are there any prizes at the end of the journey, other than the joy of having completed a good days walk. But that is a prize in itself. My husband and I plan to walk ‘the real thing’ again one day, but in the meantime we keep exploring the villageto-village caminos on our southern soil. Our last camino was a two-day trek from Ronda to Estación de Cortes de la Frontera and back. To us, this is a perfect kind of walk. You have decent sized villages appearing every 10-15 kilometres for refuelling. If we leave Ronda at sunrise, we are in Estación de Benaoján in time for a late breakfast or a second java injection. Then we continue on to Estacíon de Jimera de Líbar, where we can put our feet in the fresh river that runs through town. After watering ourselves inside and out and enjoying lunch in a local eatery (there are only a couple) we proceed to our destination. An additional benefit on this particular route is the train going along the same valley, so should we happen to indulge too much at lunch, we can always use it for the last section. I know. Resorting to public transport is not the way of real peregrinos, but in my view, life has to be a balance of effort and pleasure, or pleasure and penance for the devout. On this particular day and this particular hike, it was a good thing that we had lunch in Estación de Jimera de Líbar, as when we arrived to Estación de Cortes, there was not a soul on the streets. Ultimately, it is a rural village. After wandering through town, we managed to find a single store open to buy some fruit and cheese. Later on, our host for the night lent us plates and threw in a bottle of organic tinto on the house, which we enjoyed while watching the sunset. That is Andalusian hospitality to you, though our hosts were in fact French and Irish… The next morning we were ready to hit the road or camino before sunrise. We had seen
102
a sign indicating the trail back to Jimera de Líbar the night before, so we didn’t think of inquiring further (Hindsight is 20/20). Once we could no longer find the road markings and had taken half a dozen unnecessary detours, meeting dead ends and locked gates, we were lucky to run into a gentleman on a horse. He told us he was going the same way and pointed us in the right direction. Not completely unexpectedly, he turned out to be one of only three travellers we met on the camino that day. Following the horseman’s directions and sometimes the hoof prints in the sand (feeling very native path-finder-ish, I must admit), crossing a creek and later an up-to-our-waist river, we did finally come to the trail that lead to our first village, only to discover that the two restaurants were closed so there was no breakfast to be had. Thankfully we had picked some blackberries on the trail on the day prior, so we survived until we got to Estación de Benaoján where we had a double
breakfast and combined lunch to make up for our food deficit. We love every one of our Andalucian caminos – the ones that take off from our doorstep in the barrio and meander along the valley, the ones that cross the sierra on steep and narrow paths with jaw-dropping views, caminos through private farmland where gates have to be closed so as not to let the farm stock out, and paths with or without end. Maybe our Andalusian caminos are a bit more off-piste than The Camino, but what would a walk be without the unpredictability getting a little lost and the joy of re-discovering the trail and finding ones camino once again.
Where on Earth Nine beautiful places that will inspire you to protect our planet
Protecting our planet is an all-year-round thing and the recent pandemic is an excellent opportunity to remind us what is important. So, let’s take a tour of nine amazing places that we need to protect. Let these pictures remind you what a beautiful world we live in, and what we could lose if we don’t look after it.

Svalbard’s Seabird Cities
In the Hinlopen Strait of Svalbard, 900km north of Norway, hundreds of thousands of Guillemots gather on the Alkefjellet ‘bird cliff’. These agile seabirds can dive up to 200m below the surface to catch fish. Life on the Svalbard archipelago is under serious pressure from climate change, as shrinking sea ice has knock-on effects for the entire ecosystem. © Bernd Roemmelt / Greenpeace

The Canadian Arctic
The spectacular northern province of Nunavut isn’t well-known outside Canada, but it’s become a focal point in the battle against the fossil fuel industry. In 2014, the Clyde River Inuit mobilised to stop a dangerous ‘seismic blasting’ project planned in the area. Greenpeace supported the Clyde River community in their campaign, and in 2017 they won a court case and stopped the dangerous oil exploration project that threatened the Canadian Arctic. © Greenpeace

The Alaskan Tundra
The frozen, windy Alaskan tundra is covered in snow for much of the year, but summer brings a burst of greenery, as seen around this heart-shaped lake. Rising temperatures could dramatically change the Tundra landscapes by thawing long-frozen soils and releasing methane a dangerous greenhouse gas that’s 84 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. © Markus Mauthe / Greenpeace

We are ready,
are you?
We are delighted to share that La Sala by the Sea will re-open this month and not only will you be able to enjoy your favourite Thai inspired beach location, Sala Rewards customers will also be able to take advantage of beachside specials including a bottle of Sala House Wine for 14€ and a bottle of House Cava for just 20€. If that’s not enough their amazing two course set lunch menu for only 20€ per person is the perfect excuse to make up for lost time with friends and enjoy the rest of the summer by the sea. Whilst the team are busy getting ready to open the doors, we grabbed a moment of Operations Director Claire Radford’s time to talk all things La Sala by the Sea… Claire, how do you feel about the current situation and the summer ahead? The venue was completely refurbished this winter ready for what was to be a record-breaking season for bookings. Everyone was excited about getting ready for the 2020 season and that showed, the place looks amazing! Our attitude is one of being grateful. Seeing the way people have put themselves out and helped each other through the last few months has been unbelievable. We are fortunate enough to be a team that has been together for years and feel more like a family, I know everyone is missing each other and worried about the uncertainty, but we are all only too aware how much worse things could be. These are unprecedented times but whenever things get tough it’s essential to stay positive and look forward. Our customers have kept in touch and it’s
112
a pleasure to know they are looking beyond the current situation and waiting to see if things improve in time. We as a team are looking forward to seeing each other again soon as well as all the amazing, loyal customers that return year after year and are still hoping to do the same this year. Can you share with us the safety measures that have been introduced at La Sala by the Sea? Having spent the winter in Asia where sanitiser, temperature guns and facemasks have become the norm, it was a big shock to return to Europe and find none of these measures in place. The safety of everybody has to be priority and so with an ever-changing rule book while the world adapts, we will always ensure that we stay up to date with new information and go above and beyond what is required.
How will you adapt this year with a stronger local clientele and less tourists in Marbella? We have introduced a new ‘Set Lunch by the Sea’ menu which is incredible value and as lovely as this time at home has been, it is a welcome addition back into daily life to be able to go out and have somebody cook for you! The restaurant has always been an incredibly important part of the beach club and to be offering a variety of local and world cuisine in the form of a great value two course set lunch in a wonderful setting by the sea is something we know locals will enjoy. You would think that would be enough, but we are also offering to loyalty card holders the opportunity to book limited free beds daily while also offering house wine and cava at a local rate.
What can customers expect to see on the menu this year? Everyone knows us for our Thai inspired dishes, but we will also add more local dishes to compliment the beachside favourites we usually serve. The menu is tweaked every year and there are always a few little surprises added from our travels to keep it interesting. It makes me laugh when I get told off from loyal customers as they find a new favourite and don’t know what to order!

...
Bettina, our resident foodie, offers her insider knowledge on plant based cuisine and takes us on a culinary journey as she travels the world in search of gastronomic inspiration
One of my biggest pet peeves is food wastage. Did you know that in the UK 7 million tonnes of food and drink is thrown away from homes every year, the majority of which could have been eaten? It’s costing us billions of pounds and is having a monumental impact on the environment and its resources. The reality is, lacking consideration when it comes to how we discard food that isn’t even past its best and allowing good food to go off is destructive to the environment and to the health of our communities. Next time you leave food uneaten consider all the resources and energy that went into producing, processing, packaging, and transporting that food so it could get you to be wasted. Huge amounts of land, water,
energy, labour, money, and other materials are depleted unnecessarily, and if it is animal products you are throwing away, consider the life that animal gave to essentially be discarded at the end of the chain. Isn’t that a wake up call! Given the resources demanded for food production, the increasing realities of climate change, and the fact that 1 in 6 Americans is hungry, it is critical that we shift our behaviours towards a more sustainable and efficient use of food and say no to waste. Because the fact is, food isn’t cheap either. Grocery shopping is the highest outgoing cost related to house and family so by throwing it away we are effectively throwing money in the bin! So what can we do about it? Read on to learn how I have learnt to reduce my food waste.
We often cook, prepare, and serve too much food. Start to be more mindful of portion control and cook foods that you know you can repurpose to have for lunch or dinner the day after so that when you do cook too much, you can make more meals from the leftovers.
How many of us go out shopping intending to buy just a few things and come back home with three times more than we planned and budgeted for, caught offguard by the enticing 2 for 1, £1 off marketing efforts of supermarkets? We’ve all been there and we’ve all born the consequences of the food that goes to waste as a result. The simple fix write a list and stick to it!
114
I often cook more of the foods I know travel well and that my family will enjoy in a packed lunch the next day, for example. Scraping uneaten food off our plates straight into the bin can also be a fairly automatic part of clearing up after dinner. When you do serve more than you can manage, rather than ditching it into the bin see if you can pop it in tupperware to eat as a snack or add to a bigger dinner later in the week.
COSTA CUISINE COSTA CUISINE
I tend to use mine when I realise I have bought too much of an item of produce that won’t get eaten fresh. I freeze overripe bananas for smoothies (be sure to peel them first!), berries for jams and chutneys and for topping porridge and granola, and batches of homemade tomato sauce. Pretty much anything I have overbought or cooked too much of goes into the freezer and avoids the bin!
I buy dried goods like lentils, beans, oats and chickpeas in bulk to keep prices down and because they keep for so long. Use such store cupboard staples to make meals out of leftovers and food that’s gone past it’s best. Having beans, pulses, pasta and rice on hand mean you can always rustle up a healthy meal using whatever leftovers you have in the fridge; squidgy tomatoes and wrinkly peppers, for instance, make a beautiful pasta sauce – don’t throw them away!
Having dry goods visible in jars helps you see what products you have available so you can plan meals ahead and so you don’t buy more when you still have enough in the cupboard. A quick Google search will tell you which vegetables are better stored in the fridge and which are best out of the fridge for longer shelf lives. Keeping your fridge at the correct temperature is important and often overlooked way to keep your food fresh for longer. Your fridge should be below 5 degree celsius, use a fridge thermometer to check. Many of us don’t store our food in the best place to keep it in its optimum condition. Keep bread sealed and in a cupboard or bread bin, keep fruit in the fridge (except your bananas), and always store potatoes in a cool dark place.
There are a number of fruits and vegetables that you can replant and grow yourself. Growing your own means you always have these foods fresh and on hand and helps cut down on the money you spend on produce every week. Here are some examples of easy veggies to grow yourself: LETTUCE: Lettuce and Bok Choy are super easy to grow from scraps. Instead of throwing out those leftover leaves, simply place them in a bowl with just a little water in the bottom. Keep the bowl in good sunlight and mist the leaves with water a couple of times each week. After 3 or 4 days, you will notice roots beginning to appear along with new leaves. When this happens you can transplant your new lettuce plant to soil. CELERY: One of the easiest foods to grow from leftover scraps. Just cut off the bottom or base of your celery stick and lay it in a bowl with a small amount of warm water in the bottom. Keep the bowl in direct sunlight as long as possible each day and after about a week, leaves will begin thickening and growing along the base. When this happens, transfer your celery to soil and wait for it to grow to full length. CARROTS: These are very easily to grow – just pop the tops in some water and once green tops are visible and roots start to grow, plant them outside. Any root vegetable can be grown this way, including turnips, beets and parsnips.
