PUBLISHER’S LETTER

The beach clubs may be starting to wind down, but we certainty aren’t here at SOCIETY MARBELLA. As the summer humidity dissipates but the feel-good vibe remains, October may just be our favourite month of the year. Just think another six weeks to go and the Christmas parties will be starting! But before we start thinking about Christmas let’s turn our attention to the most recent event in the global calendar, Fashion Week, or should we say weeks... our cover star this month is more at home on the catwalk than many supermodel veterans, despite only just turning 18. Kaia Gerber, daughter of the iconic Cindy Crawford (as if we need to tell you that, just look at her), has hit all the modelling milestones in record-breaking time and has no doubt only touched the surface of her time at the top. If she is good enough for British Vogue, she is good enough for us... head to page 24 to find out more about the model of the moment. What else is happening in the celeb world? Well, a Desperate Housewives star is doing time, two of the world’s biggest pop stars reveal their toxic relationship, TV’s number one judge ditches meat to spend more time with his son and Piers Morgan thinks he is worth 5 million… what? Read more in Celebrity Status on page 26. The end of the summer doesn’t stop the celebs from heading to our shores with the cast of TOWIE making their annual appearance, one that wouldn’t be complete without a visit to their favourite beachside haunt, La Sala by the Sea. AIR’s end of summer party and Costa Women’s latest event at Max Beach are just a few more of the soirées our team captured this month.

This issue we are delighted to introduce not two, not three, but four amazing new contributors. Let’s start with Caroline Wendelin, a Scandinavian living in Spain and on hand to give us her expert expat view of life on the coast. Marbella based interior designer, Heidi Gubbins will be sharing her design tricks and tips each issue to help you transform your home and Joris Plu, professional lifestyle and relationship counsellor will be helping us make the most of our personal lives with his notable advice. Finally, adventurist, environmental activist and humanitarian Rob Greenfield takes us along on his journey from ‘drunk dude’ to ‘dude making a difference’. Rob has dedicated his life to helping us all live a more sustainable and just lifestyle and will be on hand each month to share with us how we can be part of his mission. We’re covering everything from fantastic new movie releases to Maria Erving’s guide on how to meditate. Moreover, if you want to improve your physical health, Holistic Nutritionist and Lifestyle Cleanse Expert, Elissa Goodman tells us of a powerful medicinal mushroom that provides fabulous health benefits. If we can give you one piece of advice this month it would be... enjoy October. Make the most of the enviable balance between Spanish summer and the peacefulness of the winter months, we know we will be! ‘Til next time… Andy Clark

aughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford and a fully-fledged runway star in her own right, Kaia Gerber is the epitome of today’s supermodel. Last month the breath-taking beauty turned 18 and celebrated with what she described as the “best birthday present” by gracing the cover of British Vogue. Described as an ‘old soul’, Kaia is entering young adulthood with the fashion world at her feet and talked modelling, body confidence, social media and embracing her nerdiness in the October issue of the British fashion bible. Despite her tender age, Kaia has already hit every major model milestone; Chanel, Valentino, Miu Miu, Prada, Alexander Wang… you name it, she’s walked it. Her classically

Born 3rd September 2001, Kaia is the daughter of fashion icon Cindy Crawford and businessman, Randy Gerber who founded nightlife companies ‘Midnight Oil’ and ‘The Gerber Group’ and turned the tequila brand he co-founded with George Clooney into a billion-dollar business. Whilst modelling was no doubt inevitable, Kaia started out at a young age with her very first modelling assignment at just 10 years old for designer, Versace with their line for kids, Young Versace. She signed with IMG models in July 2015 and hit the ground running, commencing, of course, with Teen

Vogue. Kaia appeared on the cover of ‘Vogue Paris’ with her mother in 2016 as well as starring in Alexander Wang’s Spring 2016 ads, fronting Miu Miu’s summer 2016 eyewear campaign as well as being announced as the face of Marc Jacobs beauty line for Spring 2017 and in the advert for their best-selling fragrance, Daisy. In 2017 Kaia made her runway debut when she walked for Raf Simons’ Calvin Klein Collection. Two days later she opened the show at Alexander Wang proving that she has inherited her mum’s supermodel genes in more ways than one. Not content to star on the catwalks alone, Kaia has also taken ad campaign after ad campaign and been featured in the likes of Interview, Vogue, Pop Magazine and Self Service. Her first solo cover was for Vogue Paris in February 2018 and the same year she collaborated with the late Karl Lagerfield to create the KarlxKaia collection as well as being awarded Model of the Year at The Fashion Awards. In 2019 alone this superstar has posed for Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent, Fendi, Jimmy Choo and Marc Jacobs. It may have only been two years since Kaia took her first steps on the catwalk under the avid glaze of the fashion world, but the rest is history. The newly-turned eighteen-year-old has become a catwalk regular and made an appearance in more shows than not over the last month of SS20 presentations, starting with the big names in The Big Apple including Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Michael Kors, Tom Ford, Coach, Proenza Schouler, Longchamp and more before heading to Milan to walk in Versace, Fendi, Moschino, Prada and Alberta Ferretti. As SOCIETY MARBELLA went to print, Milan had just wrapped up and Paris Fashion Week SS20 was moments away, no doubt with Kaia at the helm, a position we are sure she will hold in the fashion world for many years to come.

iam Payne has revealed a secret feud with Louis Tomlinson and opened up about the dark side of life as part of bestselling boyband, One Direction. Reportedly at one point the 26-year old’s anxiety was so extreme he didn’t want to leave the house but was forced to go on stage and perform to thousands of people. On Hits Radio Breakfast, Liam made the surprising revelation about him and fellow member, Louis’ power struggle. “When we were in the band it kind of felt like, because he was the oldest and because I’d been singing for quite a bit of time we both got put in a weird position,” he said. “He was wanting to be the leader, and I was doing my thing and wanted to. So, at first, we didn’t get on at all. We absolutely hated each other; it was so funny. Really bad. We hid it well.” Thankfully the pair went on to become firm friends and still “speak a lot” today. He went on to reveal the difficulties he faced being part of the biggest boyband on the planet… “We had an absolute blast but there were certain parts of it where it just got a little bit toxic, it’s difficult when you have the level of fame that we had in the band.”

Actor, Alec Baldwin’s wife took to social media to make the announcement revealing, “It is still very early...but we have learned that there is a little person inside of me. The sound of this strong heart makes me so happy — especially because of the loss we experienced in the spring. We want to share this news as we are excited and don’t want to hide the pregnancy.” The couple are already parents to four children - Carmen, six, Rafael, four, Leonardo, three, and Romeo, 15 months. COWELL GOES

M

usic mogul, Simon Cowell shocked fans with his slimline appearance on the recent Britain’s Got Talent The Champions and has since revealed that his 20lb weight loss is the result of a strict vegan diet that restricts him from dairy, sugar, bread, gluten and meat. His son, Eric, was the reason behind this drastic change. “It was easier than I thought,” he explained, “and part of the reason I did it was because of Eric. I realised if I didn’t sort myself out physically, I wouldn’t be able to catch up with him. Because the minute he gets up to the minute he goes to sleep… their energy, you forget, at five-years-old, is phenomenal.” But Simon hasn’t given up everything he loved, “I went to see this doctor in London. We did some tests. And then a month later he said, ‘You have the worst diet I’ve ever met from any patient.’ So I went, ‘Okay, out of the smoking, the drinking, and diet, what do I have to drop?’ And he said, ‘The diet.’ So I said, ‘I’m in!”

She told the judge, “I am deeply sorry to the students, parents, colleges and universities impacted by my actions. I have inflicted more damage (on her daughter) than I could’ve ever imagined.” In addition to the jail time, the 56-year-old received a 30,000 dollar fine, 250 hours of community service and one year of supervised released. She isn’t the only famous face facing trouble, Lori Loughlin has been accused of paying out half a million dollars to help secure admission to USC for both her daughters, yet she turned down a plea deal and is set to battle it out in court.

THE DARKNESS

Easter is Cancelled

On the

Radar

Easter Is Cancelled is described as the Darkness’ first concept album, examining “the role of the musician in the barbarous culture of the world today, and their almost divine responsibility to challenge the establishment—something that most rock and roll artists seem to have given up on in favour of easy celebrity,” according to the band. Frontman Justin Hawkins revealed, “This far-reaching communiqué examines man’s brutality to man, the dichotomies that we live within and the alternate realities that exist alongside our blinkered comprehension of the universe. The song cycle defines human existence through a parable—the slow lingering death and eventual glorious re-birth of rock and roll.”

Heavy Love

With collaborations with the likes of lead singer of cult rock band, Taking Back Sunday, Adam Lazzara, rapper Ty Dolla Sign, Shotty Horroh and more, James Arthur is back with his third studio album, YOU, his first in two years. The Middlesboroughborn artist, who rose to fame on the X factor has wowed his fans with hits including “Impossible”, “Say You Won’t Let Go”, “Falling Like The Stars” and “Empty Space.” He describes his latest album as “very much introspective and autobiographical.”

She found fame as part of 90’s girl group, Eternal, before embarking on a successful solo career and this month Louise is back with her first new music is 16 years, since 2000’s Elbow Beach. Louise has worked with some big names for her comeback including Ed White (Adele, Dua Lipa, Sam Smith), Clean Bandit and rising singer-songwriter Raye – an artist in her own right plus songwriter for John Legend and Little Mix. “Making this album has been a real emotional and honest process for me,” Louise said. “It’s been 18 years since I went into a recording studio, and with no expectations I’ve come out with a body of work which I am so proud of. I can’t wait for you all to hear it!”

Once Upon a Mind

STEREOPHONICS

Kind Welsh band, Stereophonics release their 11th studio album this month which was remarkably recorded in just 11 days at The Distillery, Wiltshire and was co-produced by Kelly Jones and George Drakoulias. The results are an honest and hopeful album for our times, and an album that stands shoulder to shoulder with the band’s best work. The first track released from the album, ‘Fly Like An Eagle’ is a perfect first taster, an ode to endless possibility, it is the sound of a band exuding confidence in their craft as they allow the quality of the song writing and musicianship to take centre stage. The 10-track album is available as a deluxe CD with six bonus tracks.

28

James Blunt’s sixth album, Once Upon a Mind, is a collaboration with several producers, including Steve Robson, Jimmy Hogarth and TMS. “I think this is the most honest album I have ever made,” Blunt said in a statement. “Back to Bedlam was similar in that I had been writing those songs for a while about my life experiences at that time, and they came together on my debut. And every song on this album represents something that I’m currently going through or have recently experienced. It’s a very personal record, and I’m proud I can share it.”

n late August, history was made as OG stormed The International, defeating Team Liquid 3-1 at Dota 2 to scoop the Valve Corporation's “Aegis of Champions”.....???! If none of the bits in italics make the slightest bit of sense to you, like me, you're probably not much of a (video) gamer. As such, the bit coming up in bold will really twist your melon. To clarify, OG are a team of players who recently won the Dota 2 video game tournament held in Shanghai....For that they scooped $15.6 MILLION in prize money from a $34 million crowd-funded purse.

By Ian Greenland

You're not just watching a story unfold, you're actively contributing to and experiencing its outcome. They provide a welcome distraction from the overwhelming, lonely or mundane world around us.

The Aegis of Champions, icing on an already outrageous cake is a shield-like trophy reminiscent of a Lord of The Rings battle prop, lending a mythical glamour to the achievements of these young men that no amount of heckles of “Nerds” or “Geeks” or “Virgins” or, or... “Big, geeky nerd-virgins!!” could diminish.

e-sport: noun

1. an online activity involving physical exertion generally limited to the thumbs in which an individual or team competes against another or others for the entertainment of some and utter bewilderment of the rest. (SOURCE: me)

Among the gaming and “spectating” community, they are none of those things. Aside from newly-minted millionaires, they're superstars and it probably won't be long before their like become household names. The birth of e-sports appears to be Stanford University in 1972 where the first known video game competition took place. Several weeks before the debut of Pong blew the public's minds with the possibilities of gaming on computers, Stanford's high-powered AI lab hosted a low profile event, inviting the school's best players to compete at Spacewar! The prize - slightly less than $15.6 million - a subscription to Rolling Stone Magazine. Eight years later, Atari hosted the Space Invaders Championships to more than 10,000 duelling participants. Competitive gaming had well and truly arrived. As technologies advanced, so did the sophistication of games and their popularity. Despite ongoing controversies surrounding addiction, social development and links between digital and real world aggression, the industry continues expanding apace. Last year saw the global games market top $134 billion dollars, with over 2.3 billion active gamers (Everyone “working” on their phone on the tube and then some...)

34

What helped push gaming into the stratosphere was of course the rise of the internet. An often solitary pursuit took on a wider social aspect as the web allowed increased human interaction and competition on demand. Webcams and microphones enhanced the experience,

removing geographical and cultural barriers between players in the pursuit of common objectives. Where you once shook your Gameboy with impotent rage for defeating you at Tetris, it's now possible to see the look on a real nine year old Japanese boy's face when you call him a prick for torching you in Fornite. For many people happy to shout abuse at children, online gaming affords a degree of social interaction they might struggle with in real life. Video games allow a level of escapism film and TV rarely match. You're not just watching a story unfold, you're actively contributing to and experiencing its outcome. They provide a welcome distraction from the overwhelming, lonely or mundane world around us. Our gaming avatars have muscles in places we didn't know you could have muscles. They run, climb, jump and fly, save the world and get the girl whilst we get fat, staring dumbly and spilling Wotsit dust on mum's sofa. Some games even help prop up our fragile egos, though escapism frequently flirts with addiction. The phenomenal success of mobile apps such as Candy Crush, which alone generated £1.5 billion in 2018 is attributed in no small part to their design psychology. Constant in-game messages of validation such as “well done”, “great work” and “you rock” aim to fill the bottomless existential void we feel when the facebook likes trickle to nothing for our latest selfie. Where games have become undeniably, in some cases mind-bogglingly complex and impressive in their design and execution, it's possible, even for non-gamers such as myself to appreciate the appeal. Everyone needs to check out or release from time to time and, when practised responsibly, gaming provides a fun, interactive, often visually stunning means. Further cognitive benefits include increased concentration, coordination and problem-solving skills, improved memory and learning. What's got many people scratching their heads is the relatively recent boom in people watching other people playing. Last year, YouTube viewers devoured over 50 billion hours of gaming content, with half of viewers claiming they watch games being played more than they play themselves. The poster-site for video game live streams, Twitch was bought by Amazon in 2014 for $1 billion. Might sound a lot but a twitch in Jeff Bezos' leg and he probably drops that in loose change... For a non-gamer, this further level of remove from reality – not just staring into a screen, but watching as someone else stares into a screen - is a confounding waste of time, but for those involved, it's no different to following your favourite tennis player or football team. Viewers gravitate towards “playthroughs” by expert gamers, especially those able to provide a

charismatic commentary. They learn skills which they can apply to their own gaming or simply tap into a stream of content they can then discuss with their peers. Highend games are sometimes prohibitively expensive for young people, but by keeping abreast of the popular gamers, they can avoid falling out of the loop (Yes they should be out climbing trees but this is the world we live in!) Older gamers who find they lack the time needed to excel at some of the more expansive titles cite playthroughs as a more practical means of entertainment. You can still cook, do the ironing or even work whilst streaming content. Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg just became YouTube's biggest individual channelholder, reaching 100 million subscribers with his mix of comedic skits and gaming commentary. For many viewers, the familiarity of these gaming personalities and their relative accessibility though social media and message boards is akin to friendship, providing the connections and shared experiences they may lack offline. Some individuals attest to watching others gaming as a more acceptable release for their own desire to game, confined by stigma placed upon them by friends and family. Despite the faintly ridiculous idea of a person “in the closet” about their gaming, it highlights just how

Last year, YouTube viewers devoured over 50 billion hours of gaming content, with half of viewers claiming they watch games being played more than they play themselves. augmented many people's lives have become by the digital world – how desperate many of us are for connections, releases, escape routes. It's not just millennials – A recent census of retirees showed 34% between the ages of 65 and 74 now play online games at least weekly, with one in ten also owning a console... which they probably hide behind their skateboard when the grandkids come to visit. Expert analysis has proven a positive correlation between playing social or multi-player games and social connections amongst older people. With loneliness and lack of mental stimulation particularly huge problems in that demographic, gaming could viably offer a solution. For so long seen as a solitary or antisocial activity, the exploding popularity of e-sports is now bringing people together like never before. Alongside the 60 million online spectators, 2017's League of Legends World Final in Beijing's national stadium saw some 40,000 game fans in attendance to watch 144 professionals competing from 28 nations. Alongside a huge prize fund, they raised over 2 million USD for charities spearheading mental illness support, education and learning equality. Perhaps it's time we re-evaluate some of those old stereotypes about gamers... 40,000 in one place??! ..... I mean, surely some of those nerds got laid.

THE TECH SCENE

THE FUTURE OF KIDS AND TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION AND CAREERS

Training our kids for jobs that don’t yet exist According to statistics, around 65% of jobs that kids will have in the future do not even exist yet. Whether the stats are true or not, if you compare what is available now to just a decade ago, you will see how possible it could be. Imagine telling someone ten years ago that you could make thousands through apps called Instagram and YouTube, or that you can fly drones for a living. It would blow people’s minds, yet it’s our current reality and brand-new roles are being created all the time. So how can we assist education to prepare the next generation (and ourselves) for jobs that have not yet been created? Strengthen soft skills in our kids & teenagers No matter what career or entrepreneurial path our kids take, they will always need soft skills like respect, manners, and emotional intelligence. No technology can replace them, so no matter what, qualities like these will never go out of date and will always be favored in any workplace. Let them play Obviously not all screen time is a bad thing. If kids are playing the right games on the computer, they could be solving problems and learning crucial skills they could potentially use in the future. Apps and technology are used for everything from emergency services to entertainment, and without people on computers, none

36

of this would exist. How do we know the ‘gamer kids’ won’t go on to develop their own game or app that millions use? Computer science is one valuable area of knowledge that could even be introduced to mainstream education. Encourage entrepreneurial skills Entrepreneurs are getting younger and younger. It won’t be long before it’s normal to see preteen entrepreneurs. Technology is enabling this to happen faster, so encouraging young adults to strengthen skills like financial management, time management, communication, flexibility and resilience, will help take them far.

THE TECH SCENE

Mobile and homebased learning

Technology makes E-learning possible now, but in the future, it will become seamless and students will be able join in with either a real or virtual classroom as if they were actually there. This can also lead to self-directed learning studios that can be accessed at home with families for homework and studies. This could be anything from augmented reality and digital simulations to full on virtual worlds they can walk around and interact with.

Be open to new technology Using and learning about the technologies our kids use will let us better understand how children are growing up in a different world to the one we grew up in. Things change even faster now; the bar is raised higher and higher and they will face over-stimulation that we didn’t have. Their brains will be developed in places that ours were not at their age, simply due to the overload of content that is available, and the volume of time spent using technology every day.

This kind of learning will also help prepare kids for the jobs of the future as they can gain training for real-life situations, or job scenarios in a virtual setting first. Of course, not everyone will have access to the technology that will be available, just like now there are many parts of the world still without internet, but one thing is for sure – mainstream education and careers will take radical changes over the next two decades, with technology at the forefront, yet human skills will always reign supreme.

The Future of tech in kid’s learning experiences Education could be one of the most exciting areas where tech is taking over. In the not too distant future, kids will be making use of virtual reality in their lessons taking them from typical classroom lectures and turning it into a full 360 experience. Virtual reality can create entire digital worlds and bring textbooks alive. It could take kids back to historic times, take them to different countries and enable them to do complex or dangerous science experiments virtually. In fact, the possibilities are endless with VR in education. Teaching is a heroic challenge, but technology could help take some of the pressure off teachers as students can immerse themselves more in the lessons and start learning in new ways. If kids are struggling, technology could also help identify and rectify this quicker using AI (artificial intelligence). AI will never be a replacement for teachers, but more like an assistant, giving them a class-wide performance, profiles on each student, interaction patterns, and keeping track of their learning progress digitally.

PARENTING

Victoria Wood is a freelance writer and mother of three based in the south of Spain. Life for her is primarily based around a healthy diet, lifestyle and educating herself and those around her how to live well. Victoria has been a writer for the past twenty years and her work includes an environmental column, journalistic editorials and social media management. She is also a proofreader and editor, and is currently working on her first novel.

WHAT IF YOU TRAVEL THE WORLD WITH YOUR FAMILY AND LEARN ONLINE? IS THIS GOING TO MAKE YOU ESTRANGED, OR EVEN JUST STRANGE?

To what point is conforming a good idea when it comes to our children’s education? And how do we know if what we are giving them is the best start in life? What even is a ‘good education’?

T

he world is changing so fast technologically and socially that I can’t see how the schooling systems are able to keep up. It is such a phenomenally huge job with countless variables that it would take years to figure out as well a predict what would be the best education for our future generations. So as it stands we stick with the traditional methods to an extent whilst incorporating new subjects and materials and tool with which to attempt to keep up to date with our ever developing world. We’ve just started schooling our children at an online school based in the UK which follows the British curriculum. At first it just felt all wrong; why are they not going to normal school like everyone else? What are they going to miss out on? Is it just the fear of not conforming that we are concerned with, or am I making a terrible life decision? School provides so much of the stuff we are later made of. As in, it shapes our ability to socialise, how to work as a team and how to stand up as an individual. How is online school any different? Well obviously the fact that there are no other kids in the room with you, only virtual ones, but they are other kids in the same situation and so isn’t this almost the same thing? You have to speak (literally on a microphone) to a virtual room full of people you have never met,

38

so perhaps that is providing them a good grounding for what will inevitably come one day in life. They miss out on play time, and all the activities that take place daily within school hours, that give a sense of belonging. A school is an institution which you, if you remain at the same one for some years, becomes a part of you, something you belong to, an extension of your roots of you like. So what if you never have that? What if you travel the world with your family and learn online? Is this going to make you estranged, or even just strange? Will you find it hard to fit in? Or will this world experience make you understand people from all walks of life and feel comfortable more naturally in any given situation? Well, as a parent I honestly have no idea but I’m giving it a go. If after a year or even a term or two they are miserable and suffering for any reason I will seek out an institution for them to join and try that avenue. But for now I am dubiously stepping outside the box (the box I think I happily grew up in) and seeing if there isn’t another option. For example next month we would like to take them to Portugal to surf for a month, the school is in their bag so there is no skipping class. In February we are thinking to rent a camper van and take a trip to the south of France, because we can. They’re learning French at school now

PARENTING

so why not experience some French first hand? The inspiration for this came from the one year trip we just returned from where I homeschooled them myself whilst on the road. A fairly grand challenge in that we have three at different stages but it worked and I did it. Sorry, I mean they did it! On returning home, after living an amazing nomadic life for a whole year, sitting still and going back felt like exactly that, going back. Our eyes feel wide open and thirsty for more input. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe there is anything fundamentally wrong with

the schooling system, apart from that perhaps it needs some help in catching up with the aforementioned fast paced online movement and technological advances. I have nothing against getting into it once again and flowing with the rhythm of it all. But right now that’s not where we are, we are still in travel mode and so I feel this is a great opportunity to experiment with new ways of life. I’m not particularly an anticonformist but I do have my doubts and issues with some things that society is focused on. I come from a

position of materialism is negative, consumerism is crazy and the environment needs saving right now, as well as the fact that our personal health and nutrition is paramount. Taking care of our own bodies and learning how to be healthy, and what to do to stay so, should be imperative when it comes to education. Not being forced to exercise against our will but being taught why exercise is as important as sleep, hydration and nutrition. And that life is about balance. But mainly life is about being you and being happy. I hope that this new angle I’m exploring will allow the kids and my husband and I to embrace all these concepts and travel will encourage them to learn more about the world and what it is really all about. They’ll still be in my little family bubble for now but they’ll hopefully be more prepared and ready for the big wide world at the end of it? Let’s see. I’ll keep you posted! If you have any feedback, questions or opinions on this, I would love to hear your thoughts; please email me redwoodediting@gmail.com.

MATERIALISM IS NEGATIVE, CONSUMERISM IS CRAZY AND THE ENVIRONMENT NEEDS SAVING RIGHT NOW (...) TAKING CARE OF OUR OWN BODIES AND LEARNING HOW TO BE HEALTHY, AND WHAT TO DO TO STAY SO, SHOULD BE IMPERATIVE WHEN IT COMES TO EDUCATION.

In the August edition I wrote about our internal guidance-system, which is our intuition, and in the September issue I shared about the outer guidance that is available to us at all times and which often comes in the way of synchronicity. Today I want to share with you how even ten minutes of meditation every day can transform your life for the better and get you in touch with not only your intuition, but it will also increase your awareness of all the signs and synchronicities that the Universe is sending us at all times. Meditation puts you in alignment with the flow of Life and it’s not as complicated or difficult to meditate as many people might think. There are many ways you can meditate but I’m going to share two ways in this article.

I REALLY RECOMMEND STARTING YOUR DAY WITH STILLNESS BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE, SUCH AS CHECKING YOUR PHONE AND EMAILS ETC.

All you have to do is to sit comfortably on the couch for example and breathe deeply for a few minutes with your eyes closed and you will quickly get into a relaxed state of mind, which is the meditative state. And then you just sit there. Yes, nothing more to do than that! Just sit and observe what’s happening inside of you but don’t follow any of the thoughts that comes up. Be the witness, or observer, of all the thoughts that come and go and that wants your attention, but don’t go with any of them, don’t follow them. Just watch them, and if you begin tensing up because of some thought that comes up about what you need to do that day, simply let the thought go and go back to breathing again until you feel relaxed.

AT FIRST AS YOU SIT IN SILENCE YOUR MIND CAN GET A BIT RESTLESS BUT STAY WITH IT It’s just because it’s used to being active all the time, that’s all. “How do I do this?” the mind asks, because it’s used to always ‘doing’ and not merely ‘being’. But you don’t have to ‘do’ anything. When thoughts come up just allow them to be there, and when you don’t engage in them you will discover that they will leave, and that’s when peace enters your mind. Your only ‘job’ is to not get drawn into the thoughts, but don’t resist them either. You just let them be and come and go as they want, and after a while you find yourself becoming separated from them and this detachment from them brings inner peace. So, you don’t need any props like incense and crystals, and you don’t have to sit in a lotus position and chant ohm or say mantras or any of that in order to meditate. Just sit and observe yourself from a detached place within yourself. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths and simply allow the thoughts that come up in your mind and see them as being clouds and you’d be the sky.

DO THIS FOR EVEN TEN MINUTES IN THE MORNING AND YOU’RE GOING TO EXPERIENCE MASSIVE IMPROVEMENTS IN YOUR OVERALL WELL-BEING

THE SECOND WAY TO MEDITATE THAT I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU IS TO BRING QUESTIONS TO YOUR DEEPER MIND, WHICH IS THE STOREHOUSE OF ALL WISDOM, INSIGHTS, AND SOLUTIONS. When you feel the meditative state come over you, instead of just being still, you begin asking your deeper mind questions that you want answers or guidance on. A great question to ask is to simply ask “what’s the next step/best thing to do regarding ______?” and then “drop” the question into your consciousness and listen for the answers that comes to your conscious mind. You don’t have to ‘do’ anything else but to just stay open and receptive to whatever wants to be shown to you. It’s not your job to ‘think’ out the solutions and answers, just stay open for them to come to you. If they don’t come up in your meditation, they will during the day or in the following days. You will just suddenly ‘know’ what to do, or you might get a hunch, or a great idea or insight that pops up in your mind that you then follow and take action on. I highly recommend taking time for meditation or stillness everyday where you connect with yourself. So many things will improve in your life when you do. Start your day with a few minutes of stillness and connecting with yourself and you will benefit so much from it and in so many ways. Stress melts away, worry, fear and anxiety dissolves, and you become happier, more peaceful and relaxed. You become more aware and your confidence grows so you’re able to stand in your power without losing yourself in other people’s drama. You become more balanced emotionally and mentally, your drive and productivity increases, and your gut feeling becomes sharpened. And so much more! 10 - 30 minutes of stillness every day is enough, and remember, there’s no special techniques you need to learn. Just be quiet, breathe and relax into your own being, just do that, and it will revolutionize your life!

Loosen up In golf they teach you to hold your grip on your club loose. It is all about the swing. If you stress too much on your grip you will not hit the ball or the ball will fly in a direction you did not want in the first place. Same when you learn to ride a bike. If you are sitting too tight on it, it will be more difficult to learn. So, loosen the grip.

Accept yourself, love yourself and keep moving forward... If you want to fly, you have to give up what ,, weighs you down

Also in your life. Loosen your grip. On material things, ego, what you say, your emotions, relationships… Once you start holding on to everything in life, in time it will be more difficult to loosen the grip. Sometimes people will be unable to do it. Most of us know the theory, but in practice, it is difficult to not get attached to others, to material things, to life itself. One of the most important lessons in life is being able to let go. First step is loosening the grip. There will always be bad days in our lives. But as long as we understand that those are just moments, that we can choose to let it all be a bit looser, we

will feel more free, more at ease. “Tomorrow is another day… a new beginning” Be confident. Do not hold on to those bad days. They will pass. Loosen the grip on your negative thoughts. Loosen your grip on the past. Holding on causes more damage. Same with relationships. If you are holding on too tight, chances are you are creating a stressful relationship instead of a loving one. Loosen the grip. There is a funny saying: “Do not take life too seriously, you are going to die anyway.” Ask yourself, knowing you “are going to die anyway”, why should I hold on to negativity, anxiety and fear? Start today, step by step, loosen your grip!

GYM TALK

Max Fitness Gym by Reebok Functional only opened its doors in May this year, but it has already gained a solid reputation as one of the best places in the area to work out and reach fitness goals. With stunning views of the Med, experienced trainers, unparalleled equipment and fitness installations by Reebok, it’s a powerful combination for success. We caught up with David Segorbe who runs Max Fitness, to find out more about this uber-cool gym. David, the gym looks amazing! What do you love most about managing Max Fitness? Actually, for me, taking over the Max Fitness project was quite a challenge. From the beginning we were very clear that we had to be a place of reference, and for this we had to differentiate ourselves from the rest and not just be one more centre the client could choose from. We spent months studying the shortcomings of the sector and the area. We began to develop a centre that in just four months has set a new trend, has become a national benchmark and today the firm REEBOK FUNCTIONAL uses our premises as a showroom for the setup of their centres. Today our centre is already at full capacity and is known for having the latest technology REEBOK machinery, a last generation line of cardio “INTENZA FITNESS”, an Open BOX equipped with REEBOK FUNCTIONAL and most importantly, which is what defines us, a great team. TO COMPETE IN THE ELITE, IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO TRAIN A COUPLE OF HOURS A DAY, BUT TO LIVE FOR AND BECAUSE OF IT. YOU HAVE TO MAKE MANY SACRIFICES IF YOU WANT TO BE NUMBER 1. " I HAVE BEEN COMPETING SINCE I WAS 7 YEARS OLD... SPORT IS SOMETHING THAT WAS ALREADY IN ME AT BIRTH. "

personalised from the moment our customers enter through the door until they achieve their goal. Of course, we must mention our unbeatable location, over the wellknown MAX BEACH and our breathtaking sea views. What I like most about Max Fitness is seeing the project come to life, seeing how people enjoy it and, of course, seeing how in just a few months we have become well-known in the area. As a 3-time world power lifting champion and record holder in deadweight, where did your passion for fitness originate? I have been competing since I was 7 years old when I started playing in my school basketball team. Sport is something that was already in me at birth. I feel like I was born to compete and have gone through basketball, archery, squash, fitness and Strongman… all of them at competition level. 12 years ago, a friend encouraged me to participate in a Powerlifting competition and this was undoubtedly the discipline that marked a before and after in my life, culminating in winning the 2016 championship in the world of powerlifting in England. Powerlifting is a very tough discipline, but it is by far the one that has brought me the most in my career both at a sports and personal level. It’s a lifestyle without a doubt. What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who wants to train up to champion level? The advice I would give to someone who wants to compete in the elite is that you have to be very disciplined and very realistic, never being in a hurry to reach your goal and setting short, medium and long-term goals - that is the system that I’ve always used. If you go for the fast road, I assure you that you will be hugely disappointed. Also, unfortunately, very few athletes train their mind, which is very important because usually we are not designed to manage failure. The level at which we are competing today requires us to give 300%, but not only in training, also in day to day life; diet, physiotherapy, psychology ... Everything adds up and everything is important. To compete in the elite, it is not enough to train a couple of hours a day, but to live for and because of it. You have to make many sacrifices if you want to be number 1.

We hear you are filming for Spanish TV over the coming months, tell us more about that… Yes, I am currently directing a charity project called “The Challenge” in which we film documentaries about extreme sports events that no one has ever done and use them to raise public awareness about the difficult situations that many people go through in their lives.

develop a training plan fully adapted to the physical capacity of the client and his or her goal, such as daily monitoring to ensure we provide a 100% customized service. We have also just added a personalised diet and nutrition service, in which our technician, performs a metabolic study of the client in order to develop an adapted meal plan and keep track of it.

These documentaries fight against inequality and raise funds for research on diseases and social causes.

We ensure that we can offer a comprehensive service so that anyone can improve their health and fitness avoiding injuries and above all, enjoying the process.

Through our NGO “Say Less Do More” we channel all the contributions that people make to us and we take care of allocating them to the causes for which we are fighting. In our documentaries we have broken world records, we have passed extreme tests and pushed the body to the limit. Check it out! www.saylessdomore.es Aside from the incredible sea views and state-of-the-art equipment, what kind of services and activities do you offer at Max Fitness Gym? Our “signature” and what undoubtedly sets us apart is our personalised attention. We want our clients to feel part of our team, and therefore we offer a very tailored treatment. This starts with a personal interview on arrival, where our team of trainers collect information to

Another highlight of our facilities is that we are an official REEBOK FUNCTIONAL centre and offer a wide range of collective classes taught by qualified and certified personnel. Functional Training, HBX Boxing, TRX suspension training, HIIT high intensity, GAP or Pilates are some of our outstanding activities. What if I told you that there is a mushroom that helps with brain repair, has the ability to fight cancer, combats depression, is anti-aging and has many more incredible powers? Would you think it was something out of Alice in Wonderland? Well, such a mushroom exists, and it is called Lion’s Mane. This mushroom actually looks like a figment from the classic novel because it has white flowing ‘scruff,’ made up of the mushroom’s long spines that extend outward, which is also how it got its unique name. Lion’s Mane is a nootropic fungus that has a long history of use in Chinese Medicine. The list of benefits that the mushroom provides is absolutely mind-boggling. A recent study noted that Lion’s Mane is “antibiotic, anticarcinogenic, antidiabetic, anti-fatigue, antihypertensive, anti-hyperlipodemic, anti-senescence [anti-aging], cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, and neuroprotective, and improves anxiety, cognitive function, and depression.” I do not think I could come up with one humanengineered pharmaceutical that could boast a list of benefits that long if my life depended on it! Let’s take a look at the most significant ones.

50

POTENTIAL CANCER-FIGHTING ABILITIES

Research shows that supplementing with Lion’s Mane mushroom potentially slows and/or reverses the progression of various forms of cancer including leukemia, breast cancer, liver cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, cervical cancer and stomach cancer. Pretty impressive, right? A Korean animal study showed that supplementing with Lion’s Mane mushroom extract inhibited the metastasis (movement of cancer cells from one organ to another) by over 65 percent. That is what holistic practitioners, like myself, are referring to when we say that we can, quite literally, use food as medicine.

BOOSTS BRAIN POWER

There is no shortage of research on the idea that Lion’s Mane mushroom significantly enhances brain cells and brain function. In fact, Lion’s Mane is so powerful, that it may even have a substantial effect on various neurodegenerative diseases. The International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms (yes, that publication exists and, yes, it is wonderful) published data that showed Lion’s Mane actually aids in the growth of critical parts of the nerve – axons and dendrites. One of the primary symptoms of diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s is brain degeneration, but the growth of dendrites and axons can reverse that! This means that Lion’s Mane supplementation has the potential to significantly affect neurodegenerative diseases. Other research has shown the Lion’s Mane has proven capable of rebuilding damaged cells within the delicate area between the brain and spinal cord. Can you imagine the suffering that may be avoided if the powers of a fungus can be harnessed to reverse brain diseases and injuries?

INFLAMMATION REDUCTION

Lion’s Mane has also been shown to be effective in reducing inflammation, which is a major facet of countless issues throughout the mind and body including diabetes, heart disease, and autoimmune diseases.A study conducted in 2015 revealed that the fungus helps to diminish inflammation in fatty tissue, which is significant because fatty tissue inflammation is partially to blame for various conditions that increase stroke, heart disease and diabetes risk.

GUT HEALTH IMPROVEMENT

Lion’s Mane mushroom has proven to significantly reduce some of the ultrauncomfortable symptoms of diseases like gastritis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBS). As if that was not incredible enough, the magical ‘shroom is also antibacterial against the harmful bacteria H. pylori, which is a primary cause of gastric ulcers. While fighting bad bacteria, Lion’s Mane has also shown promise in aiding in the production of good gut bacteria, which is important for many functions (but that is a whole other blog topic).

MENTAL HEALTH ENHANCEMENT

Since new information about the gutbrain connection is constantly being revealed, it should come as no surprise that Lion’s Mane mushroom also affects mood and mental wellness. In one study in which women were asked to take either a Lion’s Mane supplement or a placebo, the group who was administered the mushroom extract experienced reduced levels of anxiety and depression. Other studies lead authors to believe that Lion’s Mane extract may be helpful in treating people with depressive disorders. The improved mental health aspect of Lion’s Mane makes sense since various mental illnesses often contain an aspect of inflammation.

MORE Since Lion’s Mane mushroom has proven beneficial for seemingly countless bodily functions, why not add immune system enhancement and diabetes management to the list? It is true, while there is not as much information on either of the two connections yet, the fungus does have the potential to positively impact both of those health processes as well. A study conducted in 2012 evaluating the medicinal potential of 14 types of mushroom determined that lion’s mane had the fourth highest antioxidant activity. *** If you were skeptical of the term ‘medicinal mushrooms’ before, you can now rest assured that the idea has a significant amount of scientific backing. Though the mushroom is not sold at most U.S. grocery stores, you can either grow it yourself with a Lion’s Mane mushroom kit or purchase it in supplement form. When deciding on a supplement, be sure to avoid citric acid, natural flavors, alcohol, bovine derivatives, carnitine and preservatives – this goes for all supplements. Lion’s Mane dosages vary from 300 milligrams to 3,000 milligrams, so be sure to always check the dosing information. Always check with your doctor before starting a new supplement.

Pushing Boundaries Palmeras Property Development is a real estate development brand pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity. This month we talk to owners Kristoffer Enger and Olivia O Wickerts to learn more about their dynamic company and why they chose Marbella as their home. Tell us about your team? What is a day-inthe-life of the Palmeras office? Palmeras Property Development is a small company owned by Kristoffer Enger and Olivia O Wickerts. Together we have built a great supportive team around us. Our primary partners, who we consult and work with on a daily basis, comprises of our architectural company AMES, our exclusive sales agent Solvilla and certain key professionals within the industry. Together with our key partners we come up with outof-the-box ideas and innovations.

BY PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF LUXURY VILLAS, WE STRIVE TO ACHIEVE OUR MAIN OBJECTIVE WHICH IS TO ADAPT AND MAXIMIZE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR SPACES WITH LOCAL SURROUNDINGS Thanks to our complementary skills, we are able to manage and run multiple projects at the same time. It has always been a top priority for us to find the right mix of people that share the same mutual ambitious goals and work standards. It has been important to establish a strong network of professionals with the same level of passion and dedication. A day in the life of PPD consists of continuously looking to develop all our areas of expertise, comprising of creative thinking to architectural and design innovation. Why did you feel Marbella was the right destination for Palmeras? Marbella was a natural choice to start as a developer given that we have both

68

been visiting the Marbella area since the year 2000. Initially, Kristoffer started buying villas during the financial crisis. The idea was to rent, do minor refurbishments and re-sell when the market gained traction. However, when we noticed the influx and demand of the new millennials, we saw an opportunity to develop the business concept further to high end quality luxurious villas. On the back of this, we decided to create the Palmeras Property Development brand together. What makes you unique? By pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity in the development of luxury villas, we strive to achieve our main objective which is to adapt and maximize interior and exterior spaces with local surroundings in order to take advantage of everything that the property has to offer. By integrating and combing the exterior with the interior, our ambition is to create a magical ambience throughout the villa with a perfect inside/ outside lifestyle. Can you share with us a recent project and why it stood out to you? The exclusive villa La Toca was sold before the official launch. The architectural complexity and utilisation of space is what, in our opinion, made it into this one of a kind luxury villa in Nueva Andalucia. The peculiar positioning of the original villa inspired us to create a diamond shaped construction with multiple levels allowing for different ambiences throughout. The main floor has a contemporary look, while the hidden hamman provides an exotic experience which is balanced out by the rustic secret garden and barbecue area. What exciting projects are you working on now and/or have scheduled for the year ahead? We have multiple projects under construction and in the pipeline. Our next renovation project will be launched this month, a beautiful front-line contemporary villa in the golf valley.

However, we are particularly excited about the newly purchased plot in La Quinta, where we will develop our very first new-build villa. This new project is especially exciting as it will give us the opportunity to design and engineer the complete project from day one. What can a client expect when working with Palmeras? When buying a villa from Palmeras, the client can expect a high-quality finish throughout the villa with a team of professionals for any after sales requirements.

WE ARE PARTICULARLY EXCITED ABOUT THE NEWLY PURCHASED PLOT IN LA QUINTA, WHERE WE WILL DEVELOP OUR VERY FIRST NEW-BUILD VILLA.

Can you talk us through your process? With each potential villa we seek certain ‘x factors’ that make it stand out from other villas. Often these factors might be hidden to the naked eye. However, by recognising the potential, it gives us an edge on our final project in the sales market. Through multiple visits and brainstorming sessions together with AMES, we visualise the potential of the villa and act accordingly with the intention of creating the perfect villa always considering inside/ outside lifestyle at its best. And finally, what is, in your opinion, the best thing about living in Marbella? Do you have any recommendations that you can share with our readers?

For us, the best thing about Marbella is the location and the possibilities it offers. In one hour, you can either be in Málaga - a city with a ‘big city pulse’, or in Tarifa, the most fantastic bohemian surf city or you can be skiing in Sierra Nevada within a two-hour drive. As soon as we moved here, we fell in love with Marbella’s ‘life loving’ mentality and the fact that there are so many different people from various cultures. Our favorite Palmeras spot is Boho Club – a newly opened restaurant with an amazing ambiance. Great interior, food, cocktails and a unique hip-luxury vibe.

Heidi Gubbins is a Marbellabased interior designer with an array of projects under her belt. Heidi's transformed spaces for private clients and collaborated with design firms and architects on numerous projects. Her stylish approach, focus, attention to detail and sensitivity to her clients’ wishes attract clients from Spain, Europe and the USA.

I love autumn, it is a transitional season. I like how it communicates “I like contrast! The juxtaposition of simplicity and through its earthy tones. My senses are involuntarily captured grandeur; the infusion ofbysomething different! so many things; the feeling of the crackling leaves underfoot, the Justand as with food or music, spaces should make you soft breeze that invites the sporadic showers thunderstorms feel something and the unique scent of wet earth after it has rained. I you lovenever howforget.” the sun emanates and embraces us with a soft golden light and how cloudy days make us feel cosy. As a little girl, I remember “¡Me gusta el contraste! La armonía que se refleja a walking down the street in Santiago and being visually taken by la simplicidad y la grandeza! ¡Inspirarme en the warm tones and the beauty of the talltravés treesdeand falling leaves. lo diferente! Al igual Earth, que conala música o la comida, It's the time of year when I feel most connected to Mother time to watch and enjoy all of nature changing. los espacios también deberían convertirse en

This month I'll show you some simple ways to incorporate colour, pattern and art into your décor. I'll highlight a few of my favourites and explain why I love them. I hope you'll be inspired and join me Heidi Gubbins on a journey of design.

Heidi is joining our Décor section at SOCIETY Marbella. Each month she'll offer design advice and spotlight some of her favourite and novelty items. heidigubbins.com

I recently met Miguel Ferrer, an architect and painter born in Argentina who has been in Marbella since the eighties. I love that he uses nature as his main source of inspiration, he plays on the balance, structure and the element of surprise found in the wild. It inspires new journeys and discoveries through his art. He draws inspiration from Tarifa, little towns in Spain and even travels to the Portuguese-Atlantic borders to submerse himself in the dense forest areas. I love the intricacy of his art, the way he reinterprets what he sees in such unusual and creative ways. I like the geometric lines and textured weave-effect in his pieces.

90

HIS ARTWORKS MAKE GREAT STAND-ALONE PIECES, THAT CAN BE INSTALLED ON A BIG WALL TO CREATE A FOCAL POINT IN A ROOM OR HALLWAY.

Meinke Flesseman is a Dutch painter and friend of mine. I was immediately drawn by the sincerity in her art and the feeling that she captures from what she sees, which is evoked in her paintings. I had the pleasure of visiting her atelier in Portugal last year and for me, it was an experience of colour and sensation. This stunning Billy & Doe, two of my favourite pieces and I still absolutely adore them.

MOST PEOPLE WOULD PROBABLY ENVISION THEM IN A FARMHOUSE OR COUNTRY HOUSE SETTING HOWEVER, EITHER OF THEM WOULD MAKE AN UNEXPECTED STATEMENT IN A MODERN OR LOFT-STYLE INTERIOR, PARTICULARLY AGAINST A RIBBED CONCRETE OR TEXTURED STONE WALL.

Bocci During my visit to the Milan furniture & lighting fair this year, I enjoyed visiting Bocci’s stand. As always, it was an ethereal experience. I met with Bocci’s representative recently and she explained a bit about the company culture and the mastermind behind the design of each piece. Based between Vancouver and Berlin, the one and only Omer Arbel, Bocci’s leading designer, cultivates a fluid position, between the fields of architecture, sculpture, invention and design. Focal themes of his work include the intrinsic mechanical, physical, and chemical qualities of materials and the exploration of light as a medium. I love the concept of combining light and living greenery, and Bocci has captured that impeccably well with their 38.11V Lamp! A large glass sphere is blown with a multitude of haphazard interior cavities, which intersect and collide with each other in unpredictable ways. Several of these satellite cavities are deep enough to hold earth and succulent or cacti plantings, while others house lighting elements. They have floor and table versions of this lamp as well. I have a few more favourites from their new collections that I will speak about in another issue! bocci.ca

92

I like displaying accessories as small pieces of art that you can nomadically move around at your whim and wish. These little beauties entice me with their mesmerizing colours and textures; so smooth to the touch, and yet so textured and layered to the eye.

Home Couture

If you prefer a neutral palate throughout but want to add a pop of colour, try a pattern on items such as scatter cushions or ottomans. You can then decide if you’d like the material in bolder or softer tones. Here are three patterns from Casamance’s new collection KEW PARK, that I think work particularly well.

Elitis.fr Another way to create an artful touch is by adding a wallcovering. Elitis is one of my favourite brands, they offer a wide range of eye-catching decorative options. This colourful example is from their collection “Pop”. I like the pattern and how the tones and textures are combined so exquisitely. For those who like to make a bold statement, you can play with an interior and make it a fun part of the home and likewise in a commercial space. So, be bold! Choose a wall and make an impact!

casamance.com bocci.ca

For those who like colour in a more subdued form, you can create an understated elegant space by using large patterns in pastel tones. Adding a light fixture to enhance the soft look will make a smart statement.

So that’s it for this month’s issue! I look forward to receiving your feedback on what you’ve done to spruce up your space. If you’d like to know more about any of the items mentioned in this article, please get in touch and we will be happy to assist.

and the 488 that became the donor car for the 7X Design GTO Vision. “Unlike some enthusiasts I did not start a big collection, and I simply bought and sold these cars as I went along,” said David. “The 330GT is the only car from the list that I still own. I love its classic simplicity and it is the perfect counterpoint to the technical sophistication and amazing capabilities of the 488.” The idea for the GTO Vision came about from David’s wish to own a truly unique Ferrari. “But it was important that the car should be instantly identifiable as a Ferrari. In fact this was a priority for the design brief,” David explained. Italian coachbuilders like Pininfarina, Bertone and others have been doing this for years, and more recent one-off factory specials such as the SP38 Deborah, Monza SP2 Speedster and SP3JC Roadster set the tone here.

Being used to working with worldclass industrial designers and engineers on his alternative energy projects David was determined to engage the very best car designers and engineers to realise his bespoke Ferrari. So he founded 7X Design to oversee the project. “I am a big fan of the turbocharged Ferrari models,” said David. “The 288 GTO and F40 were the pinnacle of the supercar genre in their time, and they had the visual punch to underline their performance credentials.“ Due to the lack of ad-vanced digital motor electronics in their day they were difficult cars to drive well, which only added to their legend and mystique.” While some Ferrari fans will always prefer naturally aspirated engines, there is no disputing the fact that they have perfected the response and character of the new twinturbo V8 motors. The 488’s motor is the heart of a new generation of turbo-charged, mid-engine Ferrari V8 supercars where the engineers have not only managed to practically eliminate turbo lag but also managed to endow the motor with a snappy, high revving character.

“I thought about a unique Ferrari for myself that would reference the cars I had on my wall as a teenager, with some of the visual aggressiveness of these cars and the big air intakes that helped to give them their purposeful road-racer looks. What I had in mind was literally a ‘poster car’ for today just as the 288 GTO and F40 were in their times.”

The GTO Vision’s design cues are clearly from the 288 GTO, F40 and FXX, but the critical ingredient is the way these elements from three generations of flagship Ferraris have been skilfully blended together to create a coherent design that looks every inch a Ferrari in both its proportions and detailing. “Given such a brief there are a hundred ways of doing it wrong and just one way of doing it right,” he philosophised. “Because of this I knew I had to get the right designer for the job; someone who understood the ethos of Ferrari styling through the ages and shared my vision of what a future Ferrari might look possibly look like. After some intense research David found a young American stylist whom he thought might fit the bill for the job of penning his dream car. Their relationship started after David was impressed by a ‘Ferrari Concept’ design he had done. They spoke, found common ground, and David engaged his services. However, while most young designers are hungry for publicity, this one wishes to remain anonymous because of existing corporate clients. “We ping-ponged ideas back and forth and the design slowly evolved,” David re-calls. “The stylist came up with sketches and renderings and we discussed and improved

on them. And as the project progressed we both became more and more excited.” The distinctive tail with its FXX K inspired rear wings and big rear diffuser was finalised quite early in the design process as was the F40 style transparent engine cover with ventilation slats. The brief here was to maximise engine cooling even though the mechanicals would be stock. “You can never have enough engine cooling with a midengine design,” says David. “Although this car will stay in Europe, should someone from a hot climate commission a car and tune the motor then it would be good to have sufficient headroom to cope.” To this end the F40 style rear window has 10 horizontal slats that provide signifi-cant hot air venting. Combined with the mesh grille between the rear lights, heat from the engine bay is drawn out very effectively especially at low speeds.

One of the distinctive features of the roofline is the flying buttress C-pillars. If you think this looks familiar, thereby hangs a tale. The stylist created this feature for a project during his degree course in car design, and it was seen and adopted by one of the Ford GT’s designers.

“Once we settled on the final design the time came to select an industry specialist firm to translate the concept drawings into reality,” David continued. “Envisage Group, a UK-based specialist company that builds show cars for the likes of Aston Martin, Bentley and Jaguar was selected from a shortlist,” said David. “Apart from their five star client list I was also impressed by the Envisage Classic and Bespoke division that builds handcrafted one-off or low volume recreations such as the continuation Jaguar D-Type and XKSS.” Envisage possess state-of-the-art equipment to digitally scan the exterior and interior co-ordinates of a base vehicle with fraction of a millimetre accuracy to ensure that the new bodywork matches up perfectly with the OE underpinnings. This helps to identify possible areas of conflict between the new bodywork and vital components like the radiators and suspension, allowing issues to be resolved before the prototype body panels are committed to tooling or moulds. Carbon-fibre was chosen for the bodywork of the GTO Vision, and this offers a worthwhile weight reduction over the stock 488’s aluminium bodywork. The quality of fit and finish matches the factory level, and as we witnessed during the sunset photo shoot the perfectly applied coat of red paint shows off its fine surface finish.

102

bar in terms of chassis dynamics and aerodynamics, while being aesthetically controversial. The McLaren Senna is a case in point. David did not want the reverse situation either and was emphatic that the GTO Vision was to be more than just a pretty face. Significant attention was paid to aerodynamic efficiency, with more positive downforce being produced over both axles at speed. The 488 is a very fast car out of the box so the engine was kept stock for reliability reasons. If you want more power the GTO Vision can also be based on a Pista, which would take its performance envelope to the next level. We suspect however, that most owners would want to drive past onlookers at a fairly sedate pace so the car can be properly admired and pictures taken for social media. After the car had been given public outings at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and at a private event in London, the team brought it to Marbella in Spain for the annual Magna Supercars Concours d’ Elegance. A few days later an interested client requested that the car be benchmarked against a stock 488 by one of the professional race instructors at the nearby Ascari Race Resort.

While the ultra light one-piece forged alloy wheels were specially commissioned for this car they are made to OE sizes. This allows re-use of the stock tyres, with positioning in the wheel wells adjusted by spacers to get the offsets visually perfect. The result is a car whose attractive lines turn heads and raises questions about a new Ferrari model that has not yet been launched.

At 5.4 km, Ascari is the longest racetrack in Spain, with 26 corners and some imposing elevation changes. The stopwatch showed that the GTO Vision completed a lap in 2:28.3 min versus 2:28.9 min for the stock 488. Significantly, the telemetry indicated that the superior aerodynamic downforce allowed a higher exit speed from the critical righthander before the long back straight, resulting in a 6.0km/h higher terminal speed at the end before braking.

Form follows function is one thing, but the fact is that you can end up with an ‘engineer’s’ car that raises the

While the control driver remarked on the superior high speed stability in the bends the slightly greater suspension

compression from the increased downforce was causing a tyre to rub on the inner wheel arch lining. Because he had to hold back slightly in some bends to minimise the rubbing, the driver reckoned there was at least a second and a half to be gained once the arch liners had been adjusted. The fact that the mechanically stock GTO Vision can chip nearly 2.0 seconds out of the standard 488’s already rapid lap time at this challenging track purely on superior aerodynamics is an impressive achievement. “I originally had the GTO Vision made for myself as an enthusiast, but the reaction and feedback has been so positive I would seriously consider doing a small run for others who share my passion,” says David.

“ B U T I D O N ’ T WA N T TO S E L L D O Z E N S O F C O P I E S A S T H AT W O U L D D E S T R OY T H E E X C L U S I V I T Y, A N D I A M A N E N T H U S I A S T, N OT A M A R K E T I N G M A N .”

Unlike some other wealthy enthusiasts who woke up one day and decided to build their own car David is not about to get involved in starting a factory to make cars. “We have proven that we have a great team around us comprised of some of the best international talent in the business,” he says. “I see 7X Design as company that project manages unique cars for fellow enthusiasts, who will own all the design rights and the moulds to their car.”

W

hilst trawling the supermarket aisles recently, trying to convince my three year old not to tastetest absolutely everything in the trolley that wasn't a vegetable, we bumped into the mum of one of his nursery pals. Having met her a good month prior at a kid's party, I now surprised myself by confidently recalling her name midchat and oh-so-casually dropping it into my farewell as we went our separate ways. I was buzzing. This was a momentous event, likely to go down as one of the greatest achievements to occur on aisle 14 since an elderly gent first realised it was actually cheaper to buy three separate cans of corn niblets than his usual multipack. My ever-curious son picked up on my self-congratulatory air and asked why I was smiling. I explained to him that since he'd come along, mummy and daddy's social circle had massively widened – well more of a lateral move as partying and quality time spent in pubs, clubs and occasionally even foreign villas with a good rabble of close friends had been replaced by small talk with a huge rabble of virtual strangers also pushing their spawn on swings, chasing them around soft-play and trying to prevent them licking stuff in Asda. With this sudden diversification of our peer-group came demands on the grey matter the associated fatigue and distractedness of early-years parenting worked against. Could I really be expected to remember the designation given to every snotty child and their folks sharing the local sandpit when some mornings I forgot to put on my own shoes before leaving the house?? I told my boy I was pleased I'd pulled this one out the bag. He humoured me, saying “well done” by way of a high-five, then returned his attention to a second pack of mini cheddars which, despite my protestations, he was “...just HOLDING daddyyyy!!!”..... I could see his frustrated little fingers working at the seal but

124

right now I didn't care. I was on cloud nine. I'd smashed it. Right there in front of the tinned carrots and berlotti beans I'd reached into my subconscious and successfully plucked a tiny scrap of information buried by a month of nursery rhymes, bedtime stories, Netflix, work, life and perpetual bloody brexit news. I was Albert Einstein. I was Professor Brian Cox. I was one of the super-smart sharks from Deep Blue Sea... .... and then I finished scanning our shopping at the checkout and realised I no longer knew my card's PIN number - Fucking Archie's mum Sandy!! Didn't she know my brain was already full when she struck up a conversation at that 3rd birthday party??! I'm clearly operating on a one in, one out policy for data at this point.

HOW OFTEN DO WE INTRODUCE OURSELVES TO SOMEONE THEN QUICKLY REALISE WE HAVE NO IDEA WHO THEY JUST TOLD US THEY WERE BECAUSE WE DIDN'T BOTHER TO LISTEN?

Of course I'm not the only one who struggles with names, or at least claims to. Experts say a key to remembering is intent. Without consciously intending to recall a name when you first hear it, your chances are significantly less. How often do we introduce ourselves to someone then quickly realise we have no idea who they just told us they were because we didn't bother to listen? It's such a universal trope, it's pretty acceptable on a first encounter to say “I'm sorry, remind me your name” without losing too much face, but ask more than once or do so at the altar and eyebrows may be raised. Social etiquette dictates we make the effort. There will always be those friends of friends you encounter semiregularly, who, through no fault of their non-existent personalities and vague, beige faces, don't make enough of an impression to warrant lasting recall. Nevertheless, we panic at the thought of being outed in our ignorance. More than once I've hidden in a toilet cubicle frantically searching a proper mate's friends list on facebook so I can then stroll back out to the bar and confidently

clap Dan or Steve or Phil or whatever on the shoulder and thank him for the round he just bought.... I've always liked Dan or Steve or Phil or whatever. How often do we bump into someone we half know while socialising with someone we know much better, only to enact an awkward little ritual of can'tstay-long small-talk, rapidly wrapping things up without formally introducing either party to one another lest it reveal we can't recall who the hell one party is? Your good friend, colleague or family member stands patiently grinning at your shoulder like a fool while you distractedly rattle through proceedings with the casual acquaintance, preferring everyone to think you're a bit rude and crap at social norms as opposed to... well..... a bit rude and crap at social norms. On occasions where escape isn't so easy, we'll commit to a blustering, one-sided intro, stopping at “This is my bestie, Hannah” or “This is my mum, Susana”, hoping someone will pick up the somewhat transparent gauntlet we've laid down. You try not to let your fake smile twitch with disappointment when the other party simply replies “Nice to meet you”, and your bloody mum, who really should know the score or at least be able to read minds doesn't explicitly ask them what they're called. As you later hurry away from the soonto-be-repeated encounter, castigating the woman who gave birth to you for her failings, you simultaneously resent the third party for not offering their name more willingly. They bloody knew you were flapping didn't they? They withheld to see you swing. Oooooooh, I fucking hate....??.....THAT person! High society has the answer – they do that thing where when a couple walk into a room, a bloke with a scroll loudly announces “Lady Caroline Heatherley and Duke Archibald Soames” (At least they do in films). Surely with all the GPS and face-recognition technology at our fingertips an app could alert us when “PAUL FROM 5-A-SIDE” walks into Greggs?! Aside from intent, another top tip for consigning names to memory is to repeat them aloud on a first encounter. The trick of course is not overdoing this, unless you want to come across as some Stepford wives maniac or Amazon customer service agent:

ANOTHER TOP TIP FOR CONSIGNING NAMES TO MEMORY IS TO REPEAT THEM ALOUD ON A FIRST ENCOUNTER. THE TRICK OF COURSE IS NOT OVERDOING THIS, UNLESS YOU WANT TO COME ACROSS AS SOME STEPFORD WIVES MANIAC OR AMAZON CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENT I'm going to follow you home and eat you Linda...” Alternatively, when first meeting someone, don't just take in their physical characteristics, but try crafting a mental image to associate their name directly with their face. According to communications consultant Chris Witt this is a highly successful tool for recall. (Quoted from wittcom.com)

Imagine a ham that weighs a ton spinning on the end of Mrs. Hamilton’s nose. Picture an oldfashioned car jack under Jack’s prominent jaw. See margarine melting through Margaret’s curly, blond hair. If you exaggerate the image — make it larger, say — and give it movement — have it slam into some feature of the person’s face, for example — you will make the image even more memorable. This is a tried and tested winner. Once Margaret's witnessed your glassy-eyed stare and creepy smile as you imagine butter slammed into her head, then melting though her curly, blond hair, Margaret will dive into a fucking hedge rather than run into you ever again. One less person to remember. By Ian “big ice-covered country sticking out his nose” Greenland www.iangreenland.uk

“IF I RULED THE WORLD…” A companion publication to SOCIETY is the highly acclaimed “UTOPIA”, dealing with all aspects of house and home. The title was well chosen, for quite apart from the ideas that the word conjures up, the concept is an ancient one.

I

t was famous in medieval stories and the subject of several poems, one of which, an early translation of a 13th-century French work, mentions that “the houses were made of barley sugar and cakes, the streets were paved with pastry and the shops supplied goods for nothing.” Utopia indeed! And very much in tune with the sort of society envisaged by Harry Secombe as he imagined a perfect world in the musical “Pickwick”. Utopian ideas began to be bandied about in ancient Greece and Rome. The concept of a perfect human society is something towards which we might all strive but which, given human nature, is not realisable or feasible. It nevertheless must remain within our sights as a normative social ideal. The word itself, and the first time that the concept was dealt with in any depth, first saw the light of day in 1516 with Sir Thomas More’s “About the Best State of a Commonwealth and the New Island of Utopia”, written in latín (with an equally long title). This described a fictional island society in the South Atlantic off the coast of South America, a region only recently discovered.

126

He derived the name from the Greek, meaning “Not Place” (ou-topos) or “Nowhere”. It is a remarkably radical book, particularly when one considers that it was written by a Lord Chancellor of England. One is left with the feeling that quite possibly in outlining such a society More is demonstrating how impossible it is, and from time to time the “utopian” mask slips and reality intervenes. Far from being the benign liberal portrayed by Robert Bolt in “A Man for All Seasons”, More was a man of his age and showed not the slightest compunction in torturing (on at least one occasion with his own hands) and executing heretics. Yet heretics were often also pursuing utopian ideals in both Church and State; two perilous areas at a time of religious upheaval. More’s book is likely to appeal to Hampstead Vegetarians or Islington Socialists, who are often high minded and puritanical. They seek an ideal human society, one which is based upon socialist, ecological, egalitarian, and reformist ideals, often spilling over

into feminist, naturist, and LGBT areas. They would not, of course, agree with some particulars within the book, but in general it focuses on the utopian ideal of equality in economics, government and justice. But More takes these ideals to extremes, perhaps to demonstrate their impossibility. For example, labour should be reduced to a mínimum, thereby enabling workers freed from drudgery to attend edifying public lectures before daybreak. One wonders upon the possible reaction of the TUC to this. Gold and silver should be used to make chamber pots. He comes up with a number of other interesting ideas. Certain festive days should be set aside on which wives should fall at their husbands’ feet to confess their deficiencies in their domestic duties.

These wives were only chosen after the prospective husband had had the opportunity to see their prospective wives naked, on the grounds that one does not purchase goods sight unseen. Before feminists rise in wrath at the thought, the same privilege was accorded to women with regard to their future husband. Adultery was to be punished by slavery. We have to note here that More was a devout churchman, and slavery is permitted by the Bible. But one proposal with which most people would agree, is that there would be no lawyers. A perfect world indeed!

More’s book in many ways depicts a highminded puritanical place, a sort of early science-fiction which inspired a number of writers coming after him. These ranged from the carnivalesque to the deeply political. One such example of the former is a society in which, instead of working, the inhabitants drink, feast and copulate from dawn to dusk and spend much of their time disporting themselves in fountains, bereft of bodily hair. At the other end of the spectrum we find William Morris’s “News from Nowhere”, a utopian vision of a society based upon strictly Marxist principles. Somewhere in the middle Daniel Defoe depicts a society in which Gulliver potters about as if he were in the home countries, whilst all about him the natives of Lilliput jaw for hours about their superior sanitary arrangements and the ingenuity of their electoral system. Gulliver is eventually driven mad, seduced by what may be seen as an imposible ideal. In the end the inhabitants of Lilliput are seen to be depressingly like ourselves.

This is exemplified today by the current state of party politics in the United Kingdom. They are petty, vicious, quarrelsome and sectarian. When Gulliver finally finds nobility and true utopianism it is in a race of horses. The point is well made, but it is a work of fiction. In the mid Victorian period, however, Friedrich Engels highlighted the condition of the working classes in England. Death and disease was the lot of industrial workers in cities like Manchester, Liverpool and Carlisle where, for example, nearly 5000 children out of 10,000 died before reaching the age of five. Some 1200 adults out of 10,000 died before the age of 39. This was an age when A.C.Benson wrote “Land of Hope and Glory”. Engels’s work deeply influenced Karl Marx. Together they set out to portray the conditions under which a different sort of future might be possible. They did not stipulate exactly what it might look like, nor did they forsee it in any detail. The most they could do was to describe the conditions under which a more equitable utopian future could exist. When that future arrived it was clearly not as they had envisaged it. Lilliput trumped the horses.

Visiting different places is a great way to break patterns in your daily life. Whenever you travel, your mind changes as much as the landscape around you; you get new ideas, meet new people and learn new things. This often leads to fresh, innovative thoughts, and can help you if you feel stuck with your job or your daily routine. Caroline Wendelin: International artist of SwedishFinnish and German roots, raised in Spain and completely in love with art and nature. After travelling the world for several years, working in the modeling industry, she has now settled as a full-time artist in her studio in Marbella. www.carolinewendelin.com art@carolinewendelin.com

Being someone with Scandinavian roots who grew up in Spain, I personally feel connected to both cultures and love to get the best out of both worlds. Here is a list of five things that expats tend to miss from each location and probably some of the reasons more and more Scandinavians are moving to Spain, but also the reasons they often travel back to visit their home countries.

SPAIN

1

Great weather As most people know, on the Costa del Sol the weather is usually great. During spring and autumn the temperature is mild and enjoyable, perfect for being outdoors and in a good mood. This allows people to meet up more, face to face, instead of just sending text messages or hiding at home.

3

Lower prices If you avoid the most touristic places, you will find that food, drinks, clothes and other products are cheaper in Spain than in Scandinavian countries.

The relaxed mindset In Spain, there’s a culture of enjoying life and being relaxed that not many countries can compete with. This can have its downsides too, but in the end enjoying life is actually what matters the most.

128

The healthy food If you buy at the local markets you can find completely ecological products. The taste is simply different than the imported products we often eat in the north: there’s nothing like the Spanish tomatoes, oranges and peaches! Actually, Spain was recently ranked the healthiest country in the world.

The charm of the Spanish language It takes a while to learn Spanish, but if you manage to do so, you will know that it allows for many ways to express oneself and to play with words in creative ways. Also, many people find it a very romantic language.

SWEDEN

1

The Archipelago The Swedish archipelago is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The 30,000 islands allow for wonderful boat trips and tours, and make you feel the connection to nature just a few minutes away from any city.

2

Fika and snacks While going for “fika” in Sweden is similar to grabbing a coffee, it’s also so much more. It’s taking a welldeserved break to catch up and chat with colleagues and friends. It’s eating delicious baked goods like kanelbullar (cinnamon buns) or kardemummabullar (cardamom buns). It’s exercising your right to have a worklife balance and giving yourself time to relax even in stressful times. It’s almost a sacred ritual. Also, if you’ve spent a long time in Spain you will start missing other foods like: meatballs, sil, and “Lördagsgodis” (Saturday Candy).

3

Winters can be rough but also stunningly beautiful While the good weather in the south of Spain is usually seen as an advantage, sometimes you will miss the different seasons. There is no “real” winter like in Sweden. In Spain you could celebrate christmas on the beach in a t-shirt and shorts, while this is fun for some years, at some point you will probably ‘dream of a white christmas’.

4

Everyone speaks English Sweden is considered to be one of the best English speaking countries in the world. You will have problems finding anyone under 45 who is NOT fluent in Sweden, and this is something you will miss in Spain, where most people struggle to express themselves in English (although hopefully the next generations will change this).

5

Eurovision Cringe if you want but Eurovision in Sweden is a big deal, and a great opportunity to celebrate and have fun with your friends. There is a huge following of the whole run up, almost everyone gets behind the national song. It’s something you will miss if you’re in Spain, however, many Swedish people (and other Nordic nationalities) living in Spain often get together to watch it on TV.

PEOPLE VS OIL

LET’S END THE AGE OF OIL

People around the world are holding the oil industry accountable and demanding urgent climate action. From melting ice caps to deadly storms, the oil industry is fueling climate disaster. Yet oil companies still want to drill for every last drop and spend millions lobbying governments to block climate action. It’s time to end the age of oil.

Why this matters We are in a climate emergency which has already cost countless lives. As extreme storms, floods, drought, and fires become stronger and more frequent, we’re also witnessing the collapse of nature and mass extinction. Children in cities are choking on toxic air, while communities on the frontline of oil extraction have faced destruction and human rights abuses at the hands of the oil industry for decades. We are fighting for a world where oil companies are no longer allowed to poison our bodies, our environment, or our democracy.

130

The problem The 25 biggest fossil fuel companies are responsible for the majority of the pollution that has triggered the climate crisis. The science is simple: the path to a safe future cannot include oil. But oil companies are still spending billions to hunt for new oil, lobbying our politicians to block climate action, misleading the public through their advertising and sponsorships, and attempting to silence those who challenge them. We are calling for oil to stay in the ground, accountability from the oil and car industries, and a just transition for people and planet.

People VS Oil From the stunning Great Australian Bight to the rough seas of the Amazon Reef off the coast of Brazil, and from the icy waters of the Norwegian Arctic to the arid steppes of Patagonia, people are uniting across borders to protect land and water from the oil industry. Thousands are also calling for healthier cities with cleaner air and driving the car industry toward a bright new future.

THE PATH TO A SAFE FUTURE CANNOT INCLUDE OIL.

What you can do Building a safe future for all life on Earth means taking on one of the world's most powerful industries. This is no small task, but when millions of us come together to protect what is most important we can change the world for the better.

Living his best life, Rob Greenfield is as adventurist, environmental activist, humanitarian and a dude making a difference. He is dedicated to leading the way to a more sustainable and just world.

Rob Greenfield

ADVENTURER, ACTIVITIST, HUMANITARIAN. SOCIETY MARBELLA’s newest columnist, Rob Greenfield grew up in the Northwoods of Wisconsin in the small town of Ashland and had a passion for the outdoors from a young age. In 2005 he left his hometown to attend University of Wisconsin – La Crosse where he earned a Bachelors of Science with a focus in Aquatic Science. In 2011 he moved to San Diego where he started his own marketing company, The Greenfield Group. During much of Rob’s teens and early 20’s his life was focused on money, nice possessions, and the pursuit of women. He had the goal of being a millionaire by age 30. His life took a great turn when at the age of 24 he started to become aware of the environmental and social issues of his generation. At that point he began his transformation from a Drunk Dude to Dude Making a Difference. He started with small changes such as shopping local, reducing the amount of trash he created, eating a more plantbased diet, removing chemical products from his life, and using reusable bags and water bottles. Building on the success of these small changes he took greater leaps of change such as getting rid of his

car, pulling all his money out of investments and banks harmful to the environment, and decreasing his dependency on money all together. In 2014 he cancelled his last bill and since then has been living completely bill, debt, and credit card free. Over time he dissolved his company and started a nonprofit, Happy Healthy and Free.

HE LIVES IN A 100 SQUARE FOOT TINY HOUSE THAT HE BUILT WITH NEARLY EXCLUSIVELY SECOND HAND MATERIALS WITH FRIENDS. DURING THIS TIME, HE ILLUSTRATES ALTERNATIVES TO THE WASTEFUL GLOBALIZED FOOD SYSTEM.

Rob lived off the grid in a 50 square foot tiny home in San Diego, California. He grew his own food, lived purely on rain water (approximately two gallons per day), harnessed energy from the sun using solar panels, created near zero waste, and composted humanure (it is what it sounds like). After living this Teeny Greeny lifestyle for one year, Rob auctioned off his tiny house and raised enough money ($10,000) to build 10 tiny houses for people without homes in San Diego.

After five years of downsizing and simplifying his life he was down to just 111 possessions, all that fit into his backpack. He then travelled for two years in the service of others. His third bike ride across the USA, Green Riders – Good Deeds on Bikes, was joined by over 30 others, planting gardens and doing good deeds across the USA.

In 2017 he moved to Orlando to embark on his most recent project to grow and forage 100% of his food for a year. He lives in a 100 square foot tiny house that he built with nearly exclusively second hand materials with friends. During this time, he illustrates alternatives to the wasteful globalized food system. He also explores whether it is possible to positively influence such a system while living outside it. Each month Rob will be sharing his adventures to inspire our readers how we can live sustainably and decrease our environmental impact. UBUD AWAITS

Bettina, our resident foodie, takes you on a transformative journey of nourishment, mindfulness, and the art of self care in one of the most beautiful destinations on earth, and one of her personal favourite places to travel... BALI. This issue we hear from Rachel Bednarski, who shares with us her experience as a guest on Bettina’s first Kitchen Bali retreat.

"T

o my complete disbelief and immense gratitude, I was lucky enough this year to be a part of the very first and long-awaited Bettina’s Kitchen retreat in Ubud, Bali. The week was everything Bettina promised it would be, but also so much more than could ever be conveyed in marketing material and photos. But I will do my best to take you there with words.

outside your door overnight and adorn the table at every meal. You feel yourself become humble to and at one with the domination of nature that makes itself so known at every minute; by the end of the week, wearing shoes felt almost reprehensible.

Our days at the retreat were filled with a welcome mix of abundant cultural immersion, yoga and massage, healings Every moment of the retreat and food, interspersed with a whole lot was steeped in magic. From the of nothing! And that nothing turned out moment I woke up in my curtained to be everything. Spending time with our bed, flung open the patio doors phones off, reading, journaling, going for (charmingly decked with a fleet walks in the rice fields, soaking up alone of mermaids time and getting and coy OUR DAYS AT THE RETREAT to know the other carp) onto retreat guests—who WERE FILLED WITH A WELCOME my private become like MIX OF ABUNDANT CULTURAL quickly pool to swig a mini family—is time in a lungful IMMERSION, YOGA AND we so rarely get in of dewy our frantic lives of MASSAGE, HEALINGS AND morning air, doing, doing, doing. When a retreat is hosted by Bettina Incense floats at waist height wherever you go, which not only makes you feel calm all day long but adds a dreamy dimension to your Bali reality. Multicoloured flowers line the pavements, appear

Campolucci Bordi, you expect big things on the food front; and she delivers. Bettina’s inherent gifts shine through when it comes to feeding her guests. Rather than preplan the week’s menus, she intuitively worked with the tastes and

preferences of the whole group, carefully making adjustments to dishes and ingredients as she went through the week to make sure everybody ate well and enjoyed their food.

THE THEME OF THE TRIP WAS MOST DEFINITELY HEALING. UBUD MEANS ‘MEDICINE’ IN BALINESE, AND THE POTENT MEDICINAL BENEFITS OF SPENDING TIME THERE WERE UNCANNY.

Our days began with loose leaf tea and green smoothies before our yoga class. I would then spend half of the class dreaming about the impending breakfast feast! This took many forms over the six mornings on retreat, my favorites being overnight oats topped with caramelised banana, and buckwheat pancakes. Whatever the main meal, it was always served with huge platters of vibrant local fruits and our one permitted coffee of the day. This was usually made with a spice such as cinnamon or cardamom or fresh coconut milk to slow the release of the caffeine into our bodies. We also had rich coconut milk turmeric lattes and teas made with the herb of the day. Lunches and dinners were equally brilliant, delicious and infused with Indonesian influences—and to my delight, included dessert!

In line with Ayurvedic and good-digestive principals, breakfast was always the biggest meal of the day, with dinner being the smallest—though we were never in the slightest bit deprived. A lot of the guests (me included) weren’t vegan or even plant-based eaters, but each of them commented on how little of an issue that was. The variety of the dishes and Bettina’s carefully curated menus that included cleverly combined, mouth-watering flavours and plenty of satiating fibre, protein and healthy fats meant nobody missed meat on their plates. Throughout the week, Bettina encouraged us, through little pre-eating exercises and as an example herself through her own evident passion for the miracle of fruits and veggies, to return to practicing gratitude for what we eat instead of mindlessly consuming, analysing and demonising our food. We even took a day trip to the organic farm that all of the food we ate during the week came from to see where and how it was grown. Walking amongst the beautiful, blooming, fresh vegetables and herbs in the Indonesian sun while the farmers is now a treasured memory. The week culminated in a sumptuous banquet of Bali inspired dishes on the last night. For me, and I’m sure for many of the other guests too, the theme of the trip was most definitely healing. Ubud means ‘medicine’

COSTA CUISINE

in Balinese, and the potent medicinal benefits of spending time there were uncanny.

Aside from the one-onone healing session we each had with Dewa, the Balinese Magic Man (and yes, he actually is magic!) nothing on the trip was overtly intended to be or promoted as ‘healing’. Yet everything about the experience was so deeply nourishing that I left feeling like the best version of myself. The food was organic and delivered from the local farm, so it was bursting with life and nutrition to feed our physical bodies in the best way. Bettina charged everything she prepared and served love and care and everything was eaten with gratitude, tech-free and in excellent company. We slept when we wanted to and woke with the sun (and roosters…!). Spent almost all of our time barefoot, connecting with the earth and recharging our negative ion build up we accumulate from digitally led Western life. Everywhere around us were trees, flora, and water positively radiant with life force. The Balinese people are experts at human connection, inciting us to talk and share more with one another, too. The cumulative experiences combined into a force of a growth promoting, awakening, healing experience that none of us could deny and that I’m still enjoying the effects of now, more than two months later. Bettina’s Bali retreat is a beatific deep-dive into everything Bali has to offer—Bettina is in love with Indonesia and it shines through in the way she plans the retreat and shares everything she adores about the culture with her guests. The retreat venue is nestled in the middle of the famous Ubud rice fields and as such, we were treated to daily insights into local Balinese life right outside our door. Farmers working away at the land with their traditional tools punctuate the view of the landscape from the villa windows, and watching them at work became one of my favourite morning mindfulness activities. Mopeds zoom up and down the dirt tracks, children calling from the backs to ask where you’re going and where you’re from. Occasionally a parade of ceremonially dressed locals, all in white, would descend from the nearby temple on the hill back to their village, chanting, playing drums and waving to us as they went. Perhaps my favourite memory of the entire trip was the traditional fire ceremony. A troupe of local monks arrived at the retreat venue decked out in their ceremonial robes and with a fire pit and a stash of coconuts (you’ll find out what that’s all about if you

THERE’S A REASON EVERYBODY IS FLOCKING TO BALI RIGHT NOW.... IT’S TRANSFORMATIVE AND MAGICAL; GOING ON RETREAT THERE IS SOMETHING I THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD EXPERIENCE IN THEIR LIVES. book yourself onto the next retreat!). They opened the ceremonial space with a union of goose bump inciting custom of incantations I could make no rhyme or reason of before lighting the fire as the room around us turned dark with the setting sun. Chanting mantra to the incessant ringing of ancient bells while hurling rice offerings into a fire pit and throwing personal wishes from our hearts into the flames isn’t a particularly bizarre concept to me—but even those uninitiated into the rituals of spirituality took to the more out-there practices like naturals. Because when you’re in there, immersed in the wonder of it all, it makes sense, and you can feel it working. After my week on Bettina’s retreat, I practically floated off the plane and back out into the hubbub of London life with my face beaming and my aura newly polished, rendering me immune to the quotidian stresses that plagued me just a week before. There’s a reason everybody is flocking to Bali right now. I thought it was the draw of giant jungle swings and floating breakfast social media fodder; but there’s a more ethereal force calling us all to Bali. I’m not sure what it is, but it’s transformative and magical; going on retreat there is something I think everybody should experience in their lives.

Off the beaten track...

Sunshine Coast Queensland

T

his trip had already brought us to Australia for Christmas and New Year to visit family, however while taking a drive up the coast to see friends just north of Brisbane we were offered to return to house sit two beautiful houses in the countryside for six weeks (three weeks in each). Having only been in the area for a few days we were really excited to come back and explore further. It was ticking all the boxes for our ideal life destination; weather, active lifestyle, amazing nature, great schools, fantastic food, high standard of living, friendly people and masses of opportunity for business. We were sold and couldn’t wait to experience the whole thing, especially whilst staying in two of the most stunning houses we have ever seen! We flew into Brisbane from Manila and were picked up by the people whose house we were sitting for first. They pointed out sights on the drive and told us about many other places to go walking, surfing, and hiking, etc. We got to their place and settled in, it was supposed to be their version of winter but as one of them told

136

me “last year winter was on Wednesday”, and so it isn't really much of an event. The countryside is lush, full of bird calls and the morning dew fills the air with mist as the sun rises over it each morning. It was a beautiful place to wake up. We went to Noosa for the day which was about a forty minute drive from where we were staying. Here the beaches are stunning and rival the best on earth, the restaurants are outstanding but pretty expensive, as is the lifestyle in this little niche of Queensland. The surf is often great all along the coastline here so you’ve got your pick of breaks all year round. The people are up early being active, jogging, surf life-saving, playing all sorts of sports; rugby, football, AFL, or simply out walking dogs or cycling. But wherever

you look there is a buzz of energy. It gets light early and dark early so the days take on a different rhythm which tends to lean towards a healthier version of life. The Glass House Mountains are situated all around the area we were based and are an amazing backdrop as well as excellent hiking trails, or for the more intrepid explorers - mountain climbs. According to aboriginal legend, Mount Beerwah,

produce, designer clothes, home goods, plants, jewellery, skincare, natural therapies, and toys are just some of the items on offer. A great day out for everyone, especially due to the wood fired pizzas.

IT GETS LIGHT EARLY AND DARK EARLY SO THE DAYS TAKE ON A DIFFERENT RHYTHM WHICH TENDS TO LEAN TOWARDS A HEALTHIER VERSION OF LIFE. the highest peak, is the mother that gave birth to the smaller surrounding peaks, and Mount Tibrogargan is the father peak. Rising like giant witch's hats and rounded anthills, the peaks are volcanic plugs, the centre of extinct volcanoes. Abseiling, mountain biking, horseback riding, and rock climbing are other popular activities, and the national park here is home to a rich diversity of plant and animal life including koalas, echidnas, and grey kangaroos. Very close by is also the famous Australia Zoo, the business child of Steve Irwin, the crocodile hunter, and family which is an incredible place with so much going on for anyone of any walk of life. Australia do things large just like the Americans but they’ve really stepped things up a notch. Just down the road from the zoo is the Big Kart Track, Australia’s largest outdoor go kart track, which just happens to belong to our very good friends so we inevitably had to go for a burn around the course a few times! Awesome fun. There are also them parks aplenty nearby with all the biggest rides, as well as aquariums like Sea Life, all at easily drivable distances. A historic little spot called Eumundi hosts the aptly named Edmund markets every Wednesday and Saturday, this is an artisan market of another level, there are so many stalls selling amazing and interesting things most of which are hand crafted by the vendors. What started as a bohemian style market back in the seventies now sells a huge range of goods; foods, organic

For a change in scenery from the coast's sun-splashed beaches, you can take a scenic drive across the Blackall Range, through the picturesque hinterland, to the cute mountain villages of Montville and Maleny. These quaint sister towns lie a little more than ten minutes' drive away from each other, but most tourists visit them both on a day trip from the coast, where the temperatures can often be a little cooler, thanks to the higher elevations. The drive is part of the Blackall Range Tourist Drive, and offers spectacular views of the plunging valleys below. In Montville, art galleries, gift shops, boutiques, and cozy cafes huddle along the tree-lined streets, and you'll notice some European-inspired architecture. Maleny is also an artsy town, with many galleries, studios, and workshops. Avid hikers and wildlife lovers can hike to Kondalilla Falls near Montville or look for pademelons and fruit bats on the trails in the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve near Maleny, which offers excellent views of the Glass House Mountains. For something a little more wild and wonderful many head to Fraser Island or Kgurry as it is known by its first nation folk who have recently reclaimed their lands. However, at the gateway to this World Heritage-listed island lies Noosa North Shore and the amazing Teewah beach. Here you will find an 80km stretch of powdery white sand and rolling dunes which seems to go on forever. You’ll need a good 4x4 to navigate the “road” (which is the beach) and bring everything you need for a night under the stars because this is true camping at its ultimate. You can scoop out clams from the sand with your bare hands, do a little fishing and cook your catch at the end of the day on your open fire; this is now one of the last places you’re allowed to have campfires as they were recently banned on Fraser Island for safety reasons. You can set up right near the beach at Teewah, nestled in a dune for shelter and pick a spot with plenty of tree cover for shade. But not too much that you miss out on the incredible stargazing at night. Wildlife is prolific around the camping areas and includes kangaroos, goannas, and rainbow lorikeets as well as dingoes. When the tides are low, you can drive north along the beach until you reach Rainbow Beach and Double Island Point, where the car ferry departs for Fraser Island. If you take the ferry over to Fraser

you need to have bought permits and booked camping sites previously but once you have all that you are free to roam this incredible island. There are hotels here so it isn't absolutely essential to camp but I promise you it is the best way! There are epic car trails that will lead you to the most incredible freshwater pools and lakes, dunes, forests, rivers, you name it. This is the world's largest sand island, stretching over 120km and is an unforgettable place with an amazingly powerful energy. While we were there it was mating season for the humpback whales and we saw an incredible amount of them breaching, splashing about and enjoying the warmer waters that hug the coastline of the island. It was just humbling and exhilarating to watch these amazing creatures at such close proximity and in such abundance, we felt truly graced by their presence. There is still so much more to tell about this area of Australia, and it’s capital, Brisbane, is so much less known than Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. However this city is truly coming into its own as a hub for fine dining, business and culture. But more on that next time! We loved it here and can’t wait to go back, maybe one day even live there, who knows?

e all know with steak, it’s all about the cut itself. The Premium Galician Beef, over 52 months old, is clearly the star at Oak, but there is also FleckviehSimmental Beef (over 48 months old), a Tomahawk Rib-Eye for Two and a Charra Beef Sirloin matured for 28 days, all grilled on The Oak Grill to achieve that crisp, caramelised exterior with a pink or red centre. They’re all well-done… or rather, medium rare (well that would be our choice anyway!) and not forgetting the extras, there are a slew of sauces to pair with your meat – we’re partial to the Chimichurri or Blue Cheese.

On our most recent visit to Oak Garden & Grill we were reminded of the prime location and intimate secret garden inspired setting which wouldn’t be out of place in the garden of an Andalusian style villa. Knowing we were set to enjoy some fabulous carnivorous offerings, we commenced with the Tempura King Prawns with Tamarind Sauce, Nam Jam Sauce, Daikon Fresh Salad, Enoki Mushrooms, Baby Spinach, Avocado, Chilli, Fresh Mint and Ginger. The Asian accompaniments meant the dish was rich in flavour and the tempura prawns were a perfect journey of crisp on the outside and succulently soft in the centre. Oak’s extensive starter selection really has something for every palate; choose from Brie fried in crispy Panko served with mixed Berry Compote, Langoustine Pil-Pil with Chilli and Garlic or Norwegian Salmon Tartare marinated with Ponzu Sauce, Ginger, Toasted Sesame Seeds, Wakame, Tobico, Wasabi and Sriracha Mayonnaise.

with a Jacket Potato, Mushrooms and Cherry Tomatoes. All the meats at Oak are cooked to perfection by their talented team, and we have to add that it’s not only the chefs that deserve our praise, the front of house staff are second-to-none and the service is some of the best we have experienced on the coast. The Oak grill is covered with aged Oak to create a unique flavour you simply have to try for yourself. The sugar crystals in the slow burning oak caramelises in the intense heat, producing a fruity scent that combines with the distinctive smoky fragrance of the wood designed to enhance the dishes without being overpowering. All the cuts are cooked with care, respect and expertise, with the aroma of oak, olive and sarmiento wood. We finished off with the Grand Marnier Souffle, because, well… how could you not?! Whether you’re looking for a fineaged cut, a delicious vegetarian dish or even an authentic Italian pizza, cooked in the neighbouring Villa Toscana… Oak has got you covered. oakgardenandgrill.com

Finding three delicious vegetarian options on any menu is impressive, but to find it at a steak restaurant is remarkable, especially when they all sound simply divine. We opted for the Aubergine Ratatouille served with either fresh Halloumi or Feta and were not disappointed. For our meat choice we chose the Argentinian Rib-Eye and the Oak Grilled Lamb Cutlets, both served

CANARY ISLANDS to MARBELLA

This month we talk to Head Chef of Mojo 3.0, Manu Liria to discuss his past experience, inspiration and why a love for gastronomy should be the key ingredient in every kitchen.

Can you tell us about your background and how did your culinary career begin? I have lived and worked in different parts of the world including London, Thailand, Australia, New York, Barcelona and Ibiza. I am always looking for culinary diversity from other cultures and this has always inspired me as a chef and is reflected in my dishes. This November, I will have dedicated 24 years of my life to the industry and there has not been one single day I have regretted my decision to be a chef. Is it a hard profession? Yes, but for me it is the best in the world. What is your philosophy when it comes to food and where do you take your inspiration from? This is easy. In my case, I love what I do. For me it is not a philosophy, it is simply a passion for what I do.

140

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE CANARY ISLANDS... A FULL EXPERIENCE OF FLAVOURS ACCOMPANIED BY THE BEST WINE SELECTION. Through my creations I want to reflect a traditional and experimental cuisine, without losing the essence of each of them. What would you describe as your signature dish or dishes? I have more than one but if I had to choose one from the Mojo 3.0 menu, I would say the fig carpaccio with parmesan foam, raspberry balsamic and pine nuts. This is one of my own creations and it has accompanied me for a long time. What are your essential ingredients, the things you couldn’t live without?

COSTA CUISINE

MARBELLA HAS A VARIED AND INTENSE GASTRONOMY. THIS IS THE REASON WE CHOSE IT FOR OUR CULINARY CONCEPT, TO ADD OUR GRAIN OF SAND, CREATING NEW FLAVOURS AND TEXTURES WITH A CANARY FUSION. THIS IS A UNIQUE CONCEPT ON THE COSTA DEL SOL. I think every chef has something different to add, some are ingredients from Asia, some are Mediterranean, but one thing that should never be missing from a kitchen is the love for gastronomy. Do you think the food scene has evolved in Marbella in recent years? Yes, I think that Marbella has a varied and intense gastronomy. This is the reason we chose Marbella for our culinary concept, to add our grain of sand, creating new flavours and textures with a canary fusion. This is a unique concept on the Costa del Sol. What can customers expect from the food at Mojo? In Mojo 3.0, we don’t offer a simple dinner for our clients. We want them to feel and taste something different from the usual and have a unique dining experience here in Marbella. What would be your recommendation from the menu? At Mojo 3.0 you can choose from our “A la Carte” Menu, but if you really want to have a 3.0 experience, I personally recommend you try our tasting menu for a journey through the Canary Islands without moving from your seat. This is a full experience of flavours accompanied by the best wine selection.

The 11th and 12th of this month, Mojo 3.0 will be hosting a unique event. Chef Manu Liria and mixologist Oscar Lafuente, join forces to create an extraordinary menu: 5 Canarian fusion dishes paired with 5 cocktails with Canarian products: MENU EEL & 'ALMOGROTE' CHIPS 'WRINKLED POTATOES' 3.0 FISH 'SANCOCHO' WITH 'PELLA DE GOFIO' 'BIENMESABE' & CAMOMILLE SORBET GOAT PRESSED CHEESE ON SMOKED AVOCADO CREAM 'TUNO INDIO' PANACOTTA WITH MANGO TARTAR

TOMME FONDANTE Tomme Fondante is a cheese made with cow’s milk and pasteurized goat’s cream. Its taste is fruity and sweet. Its rind is thin and greyish in colour with an elastic and melting texture.

deliciasgourmetgroup.com

A cheese with history The brand Pochat & Fils was born in 1919 when Eduard Pochat, then producer of Reblochon farm in Haute-Savoie, decided to start marketing cheeses from neighbouring producers to sell in the region. When Eduard died in 1975, his grandson Pascal continued to run the family business, which since then, has marketed other PDO Savoy cheeses such as Abondance, Tomme de Savoie and Beaufort. Tomme Fondante is a recently created cheese that was born at the end of 2017 thanks to the participation of another cheese factory specialized in the production of goat’s milk that belongs to the same group.

COSTA CUISINE

About the cheese Its natural rind is called “cat hair”. It is greyish and very rustic. Its white paste is flexible and melts in the mouth. Its soft and creamy texture, despite its 2 months of maturation, offers a balanced mixture between the usually rustic taste of Tomme de Savoie cheese and all the generosity and finesse of fresh goat’s milk.

A unique cheese Before coagulating the milk, the goat’s cream is added. Once cut into grain, the curd is heated to 45ºC for a few minutes to extract the lipids and thus, when molding the cheese, a more homogeneous and smooth texture is obtained. It is a semi-pressed cheese; in a traditional way it is pressed by putting three fresh cheeses one on top of the other and alternating them so that they drain. Once well drained, the cheese is salted with fine salt and dried on pine planks. During its 2 months of maturation, the “cat hair” develops on the outside, and it can reach up to 4 cm in height. Once manipulated for turning or packaging, the “cat hair” is stuck to the rind, which is natural and edible.

Marriage suggestions Wine: cider, sparkling white wine, white wine type Chablis or Albariño. Beer: classic Pilsen, blonde or German wheat beer. Bread: baguette or Vienna bread. Ideal to accompany with “Regañás - Pan de Olivo” (olive bread).

Galera is a food supplier specializing in quality cheeses. They deliver to restaurants and professionals and among its main objectives is to spread the word about quality cheese culture in the province of Málaga.

BANG & OLUFSEN MARBELLA PRESENTS THE EXCLUSIVE BEOVISION HARMONY

BRILLIANT IDEAS FOR BETTER LIVING – THIS IS BRIGHT. BRIGHT is a development company that has a radically different approach. Bright creates homes that improve quality of life through pure design – community areas with a wonderful feeling of space, home offices where isolation is not a factor, kitchens that inspire a healthier lifestyle and bedroom suites designed for easy sleep. And although the overall design concept is of prime importance, details, however small they might be, are just as vital. Like showers with built-in spaces for your bathroom goodies and glass walls that slide away, bringing the outside inside: every detail is important. Bright was set up shortly after its CEO, Michael Rodziewicz, met his counterpart in UDesign, Jason Harris, asking for help in turning his Marbella house into a home.

The arc Alcuzcu hitects of Villa z, honoure UDesign, will b e d at the Propert y Award European s in Lon on Octo do catego ber 24, 2019 in n ry “Arch the itec Residen ce“. Villa Alcuzcuz

UDesign is pure design. A team of 3D specialists works on each project, ensuring that furniture, fittings and lighting – the three principal elements that are often no more than an afterthought – are contextualised from the start. UDesign begins the design process from the inside, designing homes based on how people like to live. Bright is currently developing two projects in the Marbella area to be launched in the coming months: Vista Lago Residences, a luxury development of 18 designer villas, located twelve minutes from the coast and fifteen minutes from Puerto Banús on one of the highest plots of Real de la Quinta.

Villa Alcuzcuz, a 1,460 square-metre home, which is Marbella's first avant-garde luxury house designed and built under Passive House Regulations and Standards. Just five minutes from the coast and ten minutes from Marbella, it is located in the gated community of La Reserva de Alcuzcuz, on the Ronda road.
