CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

This month we turn the spotlight on reality tv star Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian The daughter of O.J. Simpson’s defence attorney, the late Robert Kardashian, Kim Kardashian first made her mark on Hollywood as stylist to stars like Brandy and Lindsay Lohan. However it was E!’s reality TV show Keeping up with the Kardashians that catapulted this brunette beauty into the spotlight.

K

im and her siblings were born into the privileged Beverly Hills lifestyle, although her father installed the mentality of working hard into Kim and her siblings at a young age. Robert, a prominent attorney and close friend of OJ Simpson, defended the footballer throughout his murder trial. He also owned a movie and marketing company which he left to his children following the end of his short battle with oesophagus cancer in October 2003. Kim’s mother, Kris, a children’s boutique owner and TV personality married Olympic star Bruce Jenner in 1991, two years after divorcing Robert.

18

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT Employing her entrepreneurial business skills, Kim began working as a stylist for commercials, television shows, music videos and photo shoots, however it was her organisational skills and eye for fashion that led her into a unique line of work, overhauling and designing closets for celebrities. In 2006 Kim and her sisters Kourtney and Khloe, opened a fashion boutique, DASH, in Calabasas, California, a must-shop-at store for those with discriminating, yet fashionable taste. The store reflects all the sisters’ individual styles and boasts some of America´s bestselling brands. Although the shop grew in strength it was the 2007 debut of E!’s reality show Keeping up with the Kardashians that caught the media´s attention. Produced by ex-American Idol presenter Ryan Seacrest, the show follows the life of Kim, her mother/manager “momager,” Kris and her husband Bruce, the couple’s two young daughters Kendall and Kylie as well as Kim’s sisters Kourtney, Khloe and their brother Robert Jr. Recently wrapping its sixth season, the show is the highest rated program on the E! network. Kim also stars alongside her sister Kourtney in “Kourtney and Kim Take New York” which premiered its second season in November last year. Most recently, Kim shared her wedding to now ex-husband Kris Humphries with the world in a two part special, “Kim’s Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event.” The special ranks as E!’s most-watched event ever bringing in 10.5 million viewers. In addition to starring in her own reality shows for E!, Kim has appeared as an actress in a number of other projects, including Disaster Movie, hit shows 90210, How I Met Your Mother, and Brothers, among others. In 2010, she

produced The Spin Crowd, her first TV show for E!, which premiered to 2.46 million households. Additionally, in September 2008, Kim competed on the ABC hit series Dancing with the Stars where she was paired with defending Champion Mark Ballas. In recent years, Kim has become a highly sought after name and face for a number of high profile brands. She is the face

Because of high consumer demands, other DASH stores in Miami and New York opened in 2009 and 2010, respectively. In 2010, Kim co-designed a fashion line with her sisters Kourtney and Khloe in conjunction with the bebe fashion brand. This collaboration led to a partnership between the three sisters and Bruno Schiavi on a complete brand launch, Kardashian Kollection, encompassing apparel, shoes, lingerie, home, jewellery and accessories. Kardashian Kollection is sold at over 500 Sears nationwide. Sears has created a store-within-astore concept specifically for Kardashian Kollection. The collection is sold across the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Germany. In 2009, Kim launched her own perfume Kim Kardashian which is available worldwide. Her second perfume, Kim Kardashian Gold, was launched in 2010. A limited edition scent was also launched in August 2011. Her online shoe company, ShoeDazzle. com, launched in March 2009 and provides affordable, fashionable shoes to its members.

of SKETCHERS Shape-ups, the sneaker designed to get you fit while you walk, work, shop, and more. She was featured in a SKETCHERS commercial during Super Bowl XLV. Also, she (along with her sisters), has her own line of Nicole by OPI nail polish, Kardashian Kolors and she has created a line of contemporary jewellery, Belle Noel, with famed jewellery designer Pascal Mouawad. In addition, Kim also serves as the official spokesperson for Midori Melon Liqueur.

Kim has graced the covers of numerous publications around the world, including Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Allure, Harper’s Bazaar, Prestige (Hong Kong), Self and most recently SOCIETY MARBELLA. Despite Kim’s hectic schedule, Christie Holland managed to grab a moment of her time to talk to SOCIETY MARBELLA’s cover girl about becoming an auntie again, her empire and her upcoming projects in this EXCLUSIVE interview.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT CH: Hi Kim, thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us, firstly I must ask, how do you sustain your incredible figure? Please don’t tell me you eat burgers and don’t exercise! KK: Awww thank you! I work out every day! And I diet when I need a boost! I love QuickTrim. It always gets me on track. I also do watch what I eat... sometimes! CH: You have spent a large portion of your life in the spotlight, how do you cope with having your body and image constantly scrutinized? KK: I just do what I can to constantly stay in shape. I never want to get too far out of shape so I don’t have to pay too close attention to scrutiny. CH: Do you ever feel body conscious? KK: Absolutely! It’s never comfortable being in a bikini all the time! CH: When would you say you feel most sexy? KK: Definitely when I am tanned! CH: Being in the limelight, do the paparazzi drive you insane or are you just used to them being part of your life? KK: At times for sure they can drive you crazy but when you can’t avoid something, I don’t let it ruin my day! CH: Your empire continues to expand; can you share with us a little bit about what we can expect from you over the next year? KK: I am so proud of our Kardashian Kollection clothing line, and we are planning on expanding into swimwear, eyewear, and home, so watch out! It is all so exciting! CH: You work closely with your sisters on your DASH boutiques and your various clothing lines, how is it working with them on a professional level? KK: It’s amazing! I love working with my sisters! It’s great having three opinions instead of one when discussing such huge projects! It also means we get to spend some productive time together! CH: You recently opened a fourth DASH store, do you think we will be seeing DASH in Europe any time soon? KK: I really hope so! It would be a dream of ours! CH: We will keep our eyes and ears open! So…tell us, what is it really like having your mum as your manager? KK: I love it! No one is as passionate as your own mother!

20

CH: When you are creating designs for Sears and QVC where does your inspiration come from? KK: Inspiration comes from all over the place. When I travel I love seeing the fashion all around the world, that truly inspires me. CH: Whose celebrity style do you admire? KK: I love Kate Moss’ style, she’s just effortlessly chic! CH: Tell us about your jewellery collection Belle Noel. What inspired you to launch it? KK: I love designing so when I had the opportunity to create my own line I definitely wanted to express myself through this collection. CH: You are involved in so much…acting, modelling, designing etc. Do you have a favourite? KK: I would have to say designing and I also love creating fragrances! CH: Your family shares their life with the world through your reality TV show, Keeping up with the Kardashians, what is it like having TV cameras follow your every move? How often do you wish they were not there? KK: I love filming with the family. It has brought us really close together! I definitely enjoy some days off though! CH: Are all your family comfortable in front of the camera? KK: I would say so for sure! CH: Your step brother is The Hills star Brody Jenner, how come Brody did not choose to be part of your TV show? KK: The show is based more around the girls and the Kardashian side but Bruce’s kids appear on the show at times. CH: Your sister Kourtney has recently had her second baby, how are you as an auntie? KK: I am so excited to be an aunt for the second time! CH: Do you get fed up of people asking when you are going to start having babies? KK: Yes! CH: Kim, thank you again for speaking with us, can I ask you finally, what are you looking forward to over the next twelve months? KK: Just being creative and designing. Catch Kim on the new season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Sundays at 10pm (GMT) only on E! Entertainment Television.

SPARKLE

Musical prodigy, Sparkle (Jordin Sparks) struggles to become a star while overcoming issues that are tearing her family apart. From an affluent Detroit area and daughter to a single mother (Whitney Houston), she tries to balance a new romance with music manager, Stix (Derek Luke) while dealing with the unexpected challenges her new life will bring as she and her two sisters (Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter) strive to become a dynamic singing group during the Motown-era.

LITTLE BIRDS

The friendship between two young women is put to the test when they run away together on an ill-fated adventure in this independent drama. Lily (Juno Temple) and Alison (Kay Panabaker) are two close friends growing up in a dead-end community near the Salton Sea. Both girls are fifteen years old, and Lily is already desperate to pull up stakes and move on to someplace more exciting. Alison, on the other hand, is content in her hometown, and isn’t eager to accept the responsibilities of adulthood just yet but Alison wants to support her best friend, and when Lily steals her stepfather’s truck and announces she’s headed for Los Angeles, Alison impulsively agrees to tag along. The girls soon fall in with a gang of scruffy skate punks; Lily becomes infatuated with one of the boys, who barely acknowledges she’s around, while Alison becomes increasingly convinced they’re bad news, especially when they try to lure the girls into a potentially dangerous scheme to make money.

HIT AND RUN

Nº3

From the producers of the Wedding Crashers, Hit and Run stars Dax Shepard, Kristen Bell, Bradley Cooper and Tom Arnold. The comedy follows an ex-getaway driver who flees from determined feds and vicious gangsters after quitting the witness-protection program in order to drive his girlfriend to her new job in Los Angeles. Once upon a time, Charlie Bronson was the best wheelman in the underworld but these days, Charlie’s criminal past is fading into the rearview mirror. When Charlie’s girlfriend lands her dream job in L.A., he vows that she won’t be late for her first day. From the moment he pulls out of the driveway, however, it seems that Charlie’s every move is being traced. Now, with the feds closing in fast, Charlie finds every escape route blocked by his old gang -- a vengeful group that isn’t about to let his past sins go unpunished.

THE EXPENDABLES 2

From Lionsgate and Millennium Films, The Expendables 2, a film by Simon West, is the highly anticipated sequel to the summer 2010 worldwide box office smash, The Expendables. Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger return along with newbies Liam Hemsworth, Scott Adkins, martial arts legends Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme and Chinese actress Yu Nan as the first female Expendable. HOW WE DO (PARTY) BY RITA ORA

The wait is over, SOCIETY MARBELLA’s July cover star, Rita Ora is set to release her new single, ‘How We Do (Party)’ this month. The song was produced by The Runners and The Monarch, who have previously worked with the likes of Rihanna, Cher Lloyd and Justin Bieber. ‘How We Do’ follows up her number one hit with Tinie Tempah ‘R.I.P.’, as well as her chart-topping collaboration with DJ Fresh ‘Hot Right Now.’ The song borrows lyrics from Notorious B.I.G.’s 1993 single ´Party and Bullshit’ and Ora described the song by saying it covers the feeling when you “wake up in the morning and want to take another whisky shot.”

MISTY EYE BY AIDEN GRIMSHAW

X Factor contestant Aiden Grimshaw releases his first album this month entitled, Misty Eye. After two years of silence the twenty-year-old returned earlier this year with his debut single ‘Is This Love,’ surprising listeners with his mature sound and drum n bass influence. The downbeat and moody titled track is one of the albums most intimate moments and focuses around personal break up experiences. Is Aiden set to be the next Leona Lewis or will he be another one hit wonder?

Nº6 THE POSSESSION

Inspired by Los Angeles Times writer Leslie Gornstein’s article ‘A Jinx in a Box,’ this horror film from Ghost House Pictures and director Ole Bornedal tells the tale of a broken family that comes under attack from a malevolent supernatural entity of Jewish folklore. Shortly after her parents’ divorce, a young girl purchases an ornate antique box at a yard sale. In the weeks that follow, the young girl forms an intense fixation on the box, her behavior growing increasingly bizarre as she falls into the grip of a diabolical apparition. When the girl’s father discovers that the relic is in fact a holding cell for the disconnected soul of a deceased person who has been denied entry into the afterlife and needs a human host to inhabit, he fights to rid her of the evil that threatens to consume her body and soul.

HOT CAKES BY THE DARKNESS

Hot Cakes by The Darkness is the first album following the bands reuniting in 2011, having parted ways in 2006, and their first release since 2005’s ‘One Way Ticket to Hell and Back.’ The album was produced by singer and guitarist Justin and Dan Hawkins along with longtime collaborator Nick Brine. Speaking about the album, Justin Hawkins explains, “’Hot Cakes’ has a nice raw feel to it like the first album had, with occasional luxurious moments akin to the second. We’re proud of the songs and we can’t wait for people to hear them.” He continued, “We’ve been playing a lot of the material from the album in the live set for some time now. Each time we play a new song it feels like a deep powerful thrust in a frenzied love ritual between us and our fans.” The band will support Lady Gaga on her UK stadium tour in September and tour across Europe throughout the summer.

GLITCH BY HEATHER ANASTASIU

Glitch is Heath Anastasiu’s first book in her thrilling debut adult series set in an underground society where emotions no longer exist. Glitch tells the story of the Community, where there is no more pain or war. Implanted computer chips have wiped humanity clean of destructive emotions, and thoughts are replaced by a feed from the Link network. However, when Zoe starts to malfunction (or ‘glitch’), she suddenly begins having her own thoughts, feelings, and identity. Any anomalies must be immediately reported and repaired, but Zoe has a secret so dark it will mean certain deactivation if she is caught: her glitches have given her uncontrollable telekinetic powers.

HAVOC AND BRIGHT LIGHTS BY ALANIS MORISSETTE

Alanis Morissette is back with her new album Havoc and Bright Lights, the 38-year-old singer/songwriter wrote the twelve track LP in the months following the birth of her son Ever Imre and many of the themes throughout the album focus on intimate subjects such as motherhood and spirituality. Speaking about the album, the Canadian singer explained, “This (album), as always, is a snapshot of what I currently obsess about, care about, and what strikes me at four in the morning in my most introspective moments. It is my emotional, psychological, social and philosophical commentary through song.”

One Tree Hill actress, Sophia Bush is helping build a school in Guatemala through charity ‘Pencils of Promise’ by selling off her designer clothing. “Pencils of Promise rocks my world because they believe every child should have access to quality education,” the actress announced. “They create schools, programs and global communities around the common goal of education for all.” Bush has personally pulled designer items from her wardrobe for the online auction Closets for Causes; Louis Vuitton, Herve Leger, Marc Jacobs, Christian Louboutin and Alice + Olivia are just a few of the designer names up for grabs.

A lot has changed since THAT sofa incident, but Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have finally decided to go their separate ways. Miss Holmes is reportedly very pleased with the results of her settlement primarily due to gaining sole custody of their six-year-old daughter Suri. Tom will be entitled to see his daughter but under the guidelines agreed by the court. A joint statement from Holmes and Cruise stated, “We are committed to working together as parents to accomplishing what is in our daughter Suri’s best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other’s commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other’s roles as parents.”

We all knew the X Factor USA was going to be a lot for Britney Spears to handle given the past few years but it seems a drag queen singing one of her biggest tracks was just too much for the singer. Spears got up from her seat at the judges table and exited the auditorium in North Carolina after a contestant murdered her hit, ‘(You Drive Me) Crazy’. Music mogul and fellow judge LA Reid appeared to feel Britney´s pain affectionately patting her back as Lovato and Cowell tried to hide their disbelief by covering their faces with their hands. Spears then stepped out of the room to compose herself with Demi and LA close behind her leaving Cowell to address the male pop wannabe. He told the aspiring singer, “I don’t think she quite understood your tribute.” Spears then returned to her seat and added “I really respect the tribute. It was really nice.” Just not nice enough to sit and listen to right Britney! It’s not the first time the pop superstar has walked off the set during the audition process. The troubled star abruptly left the stage during an audition earlier this year after a contestant butchered her song ‘Hold It Against Me’, although Spears insisted she was “just taking a little break.” Mid audition?

good luck and it looks like it may be coming her way in the form of a role in Scary Movie 5. The actress’ life appears to be quite movie-esque and frankly quite scary also, so it’s the perfect fit. Although Scary Movie won’t be earning Lindsey any Oscar nods it’s nice to see the starlet getting her career back on track.

Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower confirmed the rumours they are more

than just friends when they strolled around Hollywood hand in hand. It’s a fierce move for the new couple considering Jamie only recently broke off his relationship with ex-fiance Bonnie Wright. The couple got engaged in April this year but called in quits shortly after.

According to a new book by Christopher Andersen, Mick Jagger and David Bowie ‘’were really sexually obsessed with each other.’’ The controversial new biography entitled, ‘Mick: The Wild Life and Mad Genius of Jagger’ claims that the two rockers enjoyed an illicit affair 40 years ago. An extract from the novel revealed, “Ava Cherry, a backup singer who lived with the Bowies for a time, reportedly told a friend that ‘Mick and David were really sexually obsessed with each other. Even though I was in bed with them many times, I ended up just watching them have sex’.’’ According to Andersen, after meeting in 1973, Jagger went backstage at one of David’s concerts, and things soon turned physical, the fling then started to wind down when David’s ex-wife Angie Bowie, who was married to David at the time, returned home to find the two men asleep together in her bed. Best part? On her discovery of her husband in bed with another man, Angie’s reaction… “Would you like some coffee?” Really?

It’s all over for celebrity wedding dress designer Vera Wang, after 23 years the fairy-tale has come to an end. The president of Ms Wang’s company, Mario Grauso, said in a statement, “Vera Wang and Arthur Becker have mutually and amicably agreed to separate. os Angeles; a city of fame-driven dreamers, bronzed beach babes, famous faces and an unrivalled amount of unabashed optimism. What’s not to love? If you’re looking to live the life of luxury, LA is the answer. Sunset Strip, the essential axis of the California music scene, filled with contemporary bars and clubs, is home to the Chateau Marmont; a renowned hideout for Hollywood’s elite. This fauxchateau, designed after the Château d’Amboise in the French Loire Valley, has long attracted an array of A-listers from Greta Garbo to Bono, particularly due to its legendary discretion. Actor Robert DeNiro lived within the hotels grounds for two years, Boris Karloff for five and when news broke of Ashley Cole’s alleged adultery, Cheryl checked into one of the hotel’s bungalows for some much needed R&R. In the forties, Columbia Studios’ Harry

28

Cohn advised his hard partying male stars, such as William Holden and Glenn Ford,

“If you are going to get in trouble, do it at the Chateau Marmont,” but it was an unfortunate event

back in 1982 that put this landmark on the map when comedian John Belushi died after injecting a “speedball” of heroin and cocaine. Since then, Leonardo DiCaprio, Keanu Reeves, Elijah Wood, Jude Law, Matt Dillon, Ellen DeGeneres and Britney Spears have all experienced its ‘Old World Charm.’ Whilst it may not be Los Angeles’ most expensive hotel, nor its most elegantly appointed, it is one of the most famous and alluring. Even if you opt against residing in one of their legendary bungalows, be sure to make a trip to Bar Marmont; who knows who you will spot sampling Bacon Wrapped Bourbon Apples, ‘Talleggio’ Mac’n’Cheese or the ‘Damn Good Burger’ adjacent to you.

If you are looking to live the ‘Pretty Women’ lifestyle, check into the one and only Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Standing for more than 70 years in the heart of Beverly Hills, where fashionable shopping mecca Rodeo Drive meets Wilshire Boulevard, the Beverly Wilshire Hotel is the epitome of true Hollywood glamour. Dedicated to pleasing the most discerning guests, the hotel is famed for its personalised service and devotion to excellence. Wolfgang Puck’s Michelin starred steakhouse CUT is located within the history filled walls, and since its inauguration in June 2006 has steadily become the place to be and be seen. Puck’s a bit of a legend with Hollywood’s elite and CUT isn’t his only venture worth a visit. Flagship restaurant Spago excels by producing gourmet fare utilising California’s freshest seasonal produce; just be warned the desserts are worth saving room for so don’t fill up entirely on the your Smoked Salmon and Caviar Pizza.

IIf you are wondering where to spend a sunshine filled afternoon, nestled in the center of the trendy Robertson Boulevard you will find the quaint, cosy and shabby chic eatery, The Ivy. While the décor might not scream Hollywood elite, the clientele certainly do. If you have time, wait for a table on the patio and you are guaranteed to spot a famous face. While you devour your Swordfish Taco (a must), keep your eyes on the paparazzi gathered at the entrance, when they start to snap and squirm, you know someone worth watching is about to make an appearance. For a break from wining and dining, why not continue along Robertson and pop into hip boutique Kitson? While

Melrose Avenue boasts cooler clothing and oozes street cred and Rodeo Drive puts the London’s Kings Road to shame, Kitson is THE celebrity haven. Everyone from

Victoria Beckham to Lindsey Lohan has been papped snapping up one of their high-end brands such a Nicky Hilton’s Chick clothing line or Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku Lovers apparel. If you have the kids in tow, make sure you experience fireworks to rival New Year’s Eve’s and an abundance of cartoon fuelled attractions at the world’s most carefully constructed and influential theme park, Disneyland. Step into the home of Winnie the Pooh in Critter Country, walk down Main Street USA to experience 19th century America, go behind the scenes of Disney’s most famous films in Fantasyland or be exhilarated beyond your imagination on the white-knuckle Space Mountain. While the majority of this fine city is driven by fame and celebrity appeal, if you step a little away from the renowned landmarks, you will find some of Los Angeles’ lesser known areas that offer a different

experience all together. If you enjoy urban, edgy art and music, head to Echo Park; I Am 8 Bit, Echo’s funkiest art space, offers stellar art shows at its sprawling 4500 square foot gallery in the heart of the neighbourhood. Once you have absorbed the inspirational creations, head to Sage; the organ vegan bistro serving everything from the traditional veggie burger to the impressively delicious ‘Kind Kreme’, healthy, raw ice cream; you have to taste to believe it. The Getty Center is also worth a visit. Towering over the city, it is filled with the glory of the Old World. Among the highlights are Veronese’s richly detailed Portrait of a Man, Gericault’s Portrait Study and Albrecht Dürer’s meticulous Study of the Good Thief.

Los Angeles. Rich in luxury, extravagance, sunshine and celebrities; now do you see why it is

known as The City of Dreams?

ummer in Marbella is a heady mixture of beautiful bodies, colourful cocktails and an endless stream of pool and beach parties to attend (oh, life can be so stressful at times!). It’s no secret that our little coastal town has become a bit of a cele-BRIT-y hotspot and I have become quite accustomed to bumping into the odd TOWIE or a member of Geordie Shore. With film crew in tow, one would have to have been very shortsighted and hard of hearing to have not spotted the reality stars trying to replace their spray tans with a more natural, sun-kissed look. It seems Marbella is THE location for the popular ‘dramality’ shows we all find so addictive. So it comes as no surprise that we are now attracting film crews from a little further afield. Now, there are very few things I will get out of bed for at 7:30am on a Sunday morning but when asked if I could cover a photo shoot at Sala Beach with an actual Lord, I thought it worth the early rise! The film crew of Undercover Princes USA teamed up with local production company Reynard Productions for an exclusive photo shoot with Lord Rob, one of the main characters of the series. For those of you out there not in the know, this reality series follows four eligible bachelors, who just so happen to have prestigious titles (whether Princes, Dukes, Highnesses or Lords). The show then moves them to the US and gives them all hard-graft, working class jobs.

‘Undercover Princes USA’ film local lord at Sala Beach By Hayley Reed

Whilst finding out what us common folk do to earn a buck, these regal lads endeavor to find the woman of their dreams but cannot tell their unsuspecting love interest the truth about their real status! Lord Rob is our homegrown regal batchelor and has been busy shooting the first half of the series in the deep south of the US, trying to hold down a bar job (apparently the first person to get fired from the position... ever!) and find his lifetime partner. After scouting out his potential suitor and wooing her with nothing but his charm and wit, Lord Rob has brought his love interest back to his playground to show her a little bit of what he does and reveal the truth about his identity! The film crew chose the stunning

Sala Beach as their location for the day and contracted Reynard Productions to do the topless photo shoot of Rob and reveal who he really is! Our local Lord has a multitude of talents, having starred alongside Matt Damon in Hollywood’s Greenzone, posing for various magazine covers such as Men’s Fitness and, more recently, he was one of the models in E4’s Dirty Sexy Things. With all this already on his résumé, this latest on-camera stint is just another string to his bow and it was clear he was more than comfortable in front of the camera! With his title descending from Henry VIII (nopenot a bought online jobbie!), Lord Rob is eloquent as well as charming, and with a body like his, I do not think he will struggle too much to find his soul mate, even if his American onscreen partner doesn’t work out. We will just have to watch and see!! Film Production: reynardproductions.com Hair and Makeup: hairandmakeupbylavish.com Location: salabeach.com

Giles Brown, Society’s man with the backstage passes, reports on the Marbella gigs that he’ll never forget, and some that he can’t even remember…

A

lthough it may not be music capital of the universe in the way that London, LA and New York are, Marbella has seen its fair share of bona fide music superstars rock up over the years. We’re talking the good (Stevie Wonder, Sting, Prince, Tina Turner, Lionel Ritchie) the bad (Michael Jackson on the Bad Tour, Adam Ant, Frank Sinatra Jr) and the ugly (Divine).

As a music fan who once played in a band and fancied himself as the coast’s answer to Sting at one point,

(it was the 80s, and my full throttle and not-very-good-at-all version of Roxanne is still seared on the memories of those who saw it), I’ve always gone out of my way to catch live acts on the coast whenever I can. A capacity to work long hours in ridiculous circumstances, with huge egos and bucket loads of stress thrown in for good measure, pretty much your average day in magazine publishing, means that I’ve also been asked to help out in concert production more than once, and the promise of an AccessAll-Areas pass has often proved too much when I’ve sworn never, EVER, to work on gigs again. We’ve had what could be best described as a ‘broad church’ of acts play in Marbella over the years. Off the top of my head, these have included Disco’s most dangerous diva Grace Jones, Blondie, Nina Hagen, Kool and the Gang, Earth Wind and Fire, Imagination, Rolls Royce, Soul II Soul and Alexander O Neil, while older artists to have played include BB King, Ray Charles, Dionne Warwick, The Drifters, George Benson (you’re not a real Marbella resident until you’ve seen George at least once), as well as Van Morisson (voice of an angel, body of a taxi driver), Madness (when the bars very nearly ran out of beer) and the Sugarbabes (as the average age of the audience was about 11 there was no chance AT ALL of the booze

32

running out at that one!) Divine, the bizarre cross-dressing queen once played the club Cuba that was being managed by a certain Maurice Boland at the time, and Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott also played there before his untimely death. The next day he rocked up to the traditional jam session at Mel’s Beach Bar and asked if he could play a set to the amazed crowd. Joe Cocker has played the (now defunct) Plaza de Toros in Puerto Banus, though the first time in the mid 80s, he seemed to have an awfully bad case of the sniffles and kept shuffling

off to the side of the stage to wipe his nose…

Sade also played Banus in the 80s, although she hardly spoke to the crowd at all. Through the haze of exotic smoke, I remarked that she might as well have stuck a beat box on stage, whacked a cassette in the tape deck (remember them?) and gone off for a cuppa.

of a small African nation was in town and had been invited to the concert, but nobody had told us that his bodyguards would take up position on the roof. We rushed upstairs where a rather ‘tense but firm’ conversation took place, while the crowd, blissfully unaware, watched Joaquin. I’ve also attended more than a few after parties that have tended to be eventful. The loudest party was after the Deep Purple gig, everyone was shouting because their ears were still ringing, and I’ve been asked

on more than one occasion by various tour managers if I can sort out ‘exotic herbs and spices’ for the main act as well. It must be my angelic face.

Much more animated was Adam Ant, for all the wrong reasons. As a support act, the promoters booked popular Spanish band Radio Futura, who, rather than playing a 30 minute warm up, decided to do their full set.

Adam Ant’s security tried to rush the sound desk and a huge fight ensued, the Guardia Civil wading in gleefully with their batons to break it up. After everything had calmed down – a mere three hours later, Adam took to the stage to an almost

empty bullring, but kept slipping over on beer spilt during the fighting. I memorably worked as chef production assistant when Spanish flamenco Joaquin Cortes appeared in the bullring in 2003. What went on in the weeks leading to the performance is a novel in itself, involving a motley crew of characters and an insane amount of Heineken, but the standout moment for me at the concert was when we praised the Guardia Civil for putting armed men on the roof. They looked at us blankly and denied this profusely. Basically, the President

My most memorable after show party moment came at one of my very first gigs. Kid Creole and the Coconuts played a brilliant show in Puerto Banus and afterwards I went to the party at Mel’s club with a couple of friends. I was standing at the edge of the dancefloor in a trendy waistcoat and bow tie (again, it was the 80s…) when Kid Creole waved at me to come over. “Guys,” I said to my friends “The Kid wants to talk to me!” With all my mates watching open mouthed, I walked up to Kid Creole, his table full of beautiful women, and in my coolest voice said “Hi.” “Get me a Cuba Libre and a couple of Piña Coladas please waiter” said The Kid… The look of bemusement on Kid Creole’s face followed by the hysterical laughter of my mates as I explained that I wasn’t a waiter, this was just the way I dressed, will haunt me always… So enjoy the summer music scene, but be careful what you wear!

e’re over half way through the Marbella Makeover experience now, and Helen is quite literally transforming right before our eyes. After a few hiccups with her Anemia diagnosis and the impending delay of her surgery, it’s fair to say it has been quite a long time coming. Dr Kai Kaye from Ocean Clinic began with all over body sculpting focusing mainly on Helen’s trunk. The main focus points he concentrated on were her abdomen and hips, where localized fat was apparent along with flaccidness of the skin. These discrepancies were addressed in two ways. First, Kai removed the fatty tissue inside Helen’s body through lipo sculpting. One of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures; its purpose is to eliminate bulges of fat from different areas of the body with minimal scarring. Dr. Kaye has experience with an array of lipo sculpting techniques including laser, ultrasound and vibration, but he chose the classic tumescent technique using 3mm cannulas throughout the procedure to enhance smooth tissue contours. We are all aware that Helen is in no means an overweight lady, but

Kai removed a phenomenal 2.4 litres of fat from her body. Once her core shape had been altered, Kai cleverly estimated how much extra skin had been generated after removing the fat inside her body, and detached this excess skin through a mini abdominoplasty. This tummy tuck is the most effective way of tightening your stomach area and ridding your abdomen of the surplus skin. Kai made an incision between the belly button and the top of the pubic hair; the muscles are then tightened and the skin above the belly button is stretched down and stitched in place. Helen is left with a very small scar, which can easily be hidden when wearing a bikini and eventually will turn white and be hardly visible at all. The third and final aspect of the body surgery was Helen’s breast augmentation. The main reason was to enhance the appearance, size and contour of Helen’s breasts. However, she has had enlargement surgery in the past. When she was born, her esophagus was joined to her trachea, meaning every time she was fed, her food would block her windpipe and therefore prevent her from breathing. At the age of 14 hours old, she underwent a major operation to correct

35

“When you choose an implant, it’s not about the sheer volume, it’s more about adapting the size to the shape of the body” Kai explained.

After downsizing Helen’s form through lipo sculpting, it was important that the size of her breasts didn’t make her look top heavy. the life threatening issue and was the first to survive the procedure, in turn leaving her with the title ‘miracle child’. This left Helen with severe scarring and as she developed, one breast larger than the other as the surgeon had to remove some of her breast tissue during the operation. Being self conscious about this, Helen decided at the age of 35 that she would have breast reconstructive surgery to correct the problem. Helen’s procedure for Marbella Makeover consisted of silicone-gel filled implants being inserted underneath each breast. The implants create a three dimensional enlargement, and all silicone implants used at Ocean Clinic have a 15 year guarantee. Kai began by making a small incision underneath the breast and removing Helen’s existing implants. Her right breast was fairly uncomplicated, but a little more work was required on the left than Kai originally predicted. There were some visible, adherent scars in her armpit and lateral thorax from her windpipe/esophagus operation, which Kai rectified through scar correction and liposculpting under the scars. He also performed this treatment inside the left breast, as it was proportionately larger than the right from her past trauma. At the initial consultation, Kai envisaged that he could correct the difference in size by the volume and placement of the implant. However, once Kai removed her existing one, the difference in the breast mould was more severe than he had expected, meaning two different sized implants wouldn’t solve the problem. The implant itself changes the fullness of the core of the breast, not the side and top, and in Helen’s situation, she had more breast tissue in the left breast. Helen’s breasts have been enlarged by approximately 15%; she now has size 350 breasts rather than the 320 previously.

36

As expected, everything in the surgery went well and she has recovered incredibly well. The surgery took just over five and a half hours, which is within the normal time frame. After an overnight stay in the surgery, Helen was sent home to rest and recuperate. Helen has also begun a treatment of lymphatic drainage, offered to all patients at Ocean Clinic. This is, in effect, your body’s cleaning system, transporting waste from each individual cell. Through a complex system of tiny vessels and lymph nodes, the waste is transferred to the kidneys where it will leave the body. When you operate, you cut the lymphatic vessels and the lymphatic system cannot drain properly, so one has to do it manually through massage, moving the built up liquid towards the lymph nodes where they can drain. This process is normally performed through the capillary effect, but after surgery, they become destroyed and often blocked through the

tissue pressure, so they cannot drain. This is a process that can take up to eight weeks with six to eight sessions, depending on the amount of surgery a client has undergone, and their body’s individual reaction to the lymphatic drainage treatment. We asked Helen how she was feeling post surgery, and true to her normal vibrant self, she expressed how well she was recovering. “The liposuction was the most painful part when I awoke from the anesthesia. My breasts were virtually painless, it was my core that simply ached”. Kai explained that when the cannula is placed inside the body throughout the lipo sculpting procedure, it scrapes the muscle and creates micro lesions, causing some discomfort.

“It feels as though somebody has hugged you a little too hard” Kai playfully put it. Now that her body transformation is complete, as are her new teeth, Helen’s makeover is really taking shape, with her face surgery scheduled for late August. So to ensure the big unveiling in December is a surprise, we have decided to keep Helen’s after pictures from you! Mean, us?! oceanclinic.net

THE LATEST TECHNIQUES Currently the most advanced combination on the market is; the fat transferring system (AKA The Body Jet), that literally removes and adds fat wherever necessary, alongside the latest Diodo Laser technique which leaves the skin looking tight, and a PRP Treatment, which ensures an ultra-rapid healing and recovery process. This revolutionary combination allows for surgical procedures to be processed with less complexity, in a more natural way, whilst leaving no traces of the operation. A mixture of these three techniques can be applied to almost any surgery and the results are guaranteed to exceed expectations.

COST Costs depend on the surgeon’s qualifications, level of experience and geographical location. However, do not let the price affect your final decision; as with everything in life, the price you pay is reflected in the quality you receive. Most advanced treatments are fairly priced and affordable for the average person.

DO NOT TAKE ANY RISKS Although many plastic surgeons feel confident to process facial surgery and claim to be able to create a beautiful finish, facial aesthetic treatments are one of the most complex. It is recommended that you should discuss all possibilities with a reconstructive surgeon that specializes in head and neck surgery, before you undertake any facial procedures. cirumed.es

LOSING WEIGHT THE EASY WAY

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Nicola McGeorge reviews ‘Arasys’, an inch loss system which treats the entire body for both men and women. Regular readers will know that last month I experienced my first Universal Body Contour Wrap at the Lipo Room, where I lost 6 ¾ inches in total. Since the results were so positive, head therapist, Lynn Shepherd, recommended that I book in for a further two wraps plus a session on their Arasys inch loss system. As Lynn is now my guru and I will listen to anything she advises, I signed up there and then. We decided on a body wrap per week for a fortnight, finishing off with the Arasys. The body wraps I cannot praise enough. I continued to lose weight and tone up after each wrap, still seeing results up to three days after the treatment. I can now actually fit in trousers that I have not been able to get into for over a year. I have to say I was a bit dubious about the Arasys, but Lynn proved me wrong again. The Arasys is a handmade electric device created and manufactured by the co-inventor of the first pacemaker, Gary Pollock. The high intensity inch loss treatment provides the equivalent of over 33O sit-ups in a 17 minute treatment reducing hips, thighs, buttocks and stomach. They are the kind of stats I like to hear.

signals normally coming from the brain that activate the muscles during exercise. The signal finds the nerves and provides an interrupted current which contracts the muscles and then relaxes them. The wave form, unique to the Arasys, produces a slow ‘ramp up,’ in other words smooth contractions of the muscle making it a comfortable muscle building experience. On a ten treatment course a loss of 19 inches could be expected. In addition the treatment has a diuretic effect resulting in the removal of toxins. THE EXPERIENCE Once strapped up, Lynn flicked the switch and we were off. I will admit it was an extremely strange sensation, yet not uncomfortable at all. I just sat back and relaxed, listening to the soothing music. Before I knew it, the session had finished and I was ready to go. No mess, no fuss, just tighter abs than when I arrived. What’s not to like, it’s the perfect treatment for lazy girls like me. Liporoom Tel. 952 906 688

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

THE HEALING TOUCH

By Nicola McGeorge

Mivita is committed to providing the highest standard of body treatments, remedial massage and sports massage for both athletes and the general public alike. People often ask me what I look for in a good therapist. The answer is bundles of energy, clear skin, sparkling eyes and a spring in their step; basically they need to be the perfect vision of good health. Why? Because if they can’t look after themselves properly, how on earth can they help you? Owner of Mivita, Michelle Brangstrup, from Denmark, is all of the above and a hell of a lot more. This outstanding therapist with a Bachelor of Science in biology, a massage therapy diploma, a naturopathy diploma, and a kinesiotape course under her belt, is also fluent in Danish, English and Spanish. She has treated people from all walks of life, who have suffered from a range

of different medical conditions; sporting injuries; work related injuries and general aches and pains. “I basically just want to help and teach people about the significance of massage”, she explains. “Massage is extremely important for the prevention of injuries and of course for the general well being. People spend so much time polluting the body and over working it, which leads to ill health but they do not seem to connect the two. If they could just realise the health benefits they would receive from massage, it really would change their lives. Massage keeps everything functioning properly even if you only have one a month. For example, it gets the lymphatic system moving, improves circulation, relaxes the mind which helps the nervous system, I could go on and on. Can you tell I am very passionate about what I do?” she laughs.

The talented Dom Pastoressa shows off his hair wizardry with this ultimate hair makeover.

W

hen we set ‘hair artist’ Dom Pastoressa our hair makeover challenge he didn’t even bat an eyelid. All he wanted to know was whether he would get the chance to see the model beforehand. Confidence is what we like in a hair technician. However, it was much harder than we thought trying to find someone who was willing to let a stylist do whatever he wanted to their hair. We had assumed a free colour and cut would have them queuing at the door but it took more convincing than we expected. “Most people are too scared for such a dramatic change,” Dom explained. “Remember your hair is part of your identity.

Hair is a woman’s glory. Glory, self-worth, social acceptance and beauty are all tangled up in every woman’s hair. This is why I spend so much time with each of my clients, their hair is very important to them.”

Eventually we found our girl and Dom couldn’t believe his luck. Masha trusted

him completely and was happy to let him do whatever he wanted, “I never get such free reign, to be able to totally change someone’s look and be allowed to express my creativity, it is a dream come true.” First Dom began with the consultation where not only did he study Masha’s hair in depth but also her face shape, features and overall style before deciding on his plan of action. “Her hair was in very bad condition.” He commented. “Typical hair on the coast really, very dry, dull with split ends. The harsh elements in Spain play havoc on the hair condition. All of the weight of Masha’s hair was at the ends and it had very little body. This drags a face downwards and can be ageing. As for the colour it did nothing for her at all, the mousy brown actually drained her. Then, when taking her face shape into consideration with her high cheekbones and a strong jawline I knew I would have to take it short. I loved her cat like eyes, which is where I took my main inspiration from.”

Dom opted for an asymmetric cut, which added movement and volume, while the different length layers created the textured look he was after. For the colour he used Alfaparf Milano ColorWear all over creating a natural base. Then for the sunkissed effect he used the Balayage technique which involves hand painting of the hair with colour or lightener to produce an incredibly individual result. The result, well we couldn’t believe it was the same girl. Dom had really out done himself. “I never thought I could look like this,” Masha grinned. “I have always had long hair and I didn’t think short hair would ever suit me let alone look this cute. It is very different from what I expected, so it was a fantastic surprise. All my friends love it; I have not found anybody that doesn’t prefer my hair like this. The best thing is that it makes me look younger. I love it!” Bet you ladies wish you had volunteered for the makeover now, don’t you!

LÍNEA DIRECTA REPORTS ON THE NEW FRENCH LEGISLATION ON DRINK DRIVING

From July 1st, all French drivers driving on roads in France must carry a breathalyser kit in their cars. The measure, announced by the previous government, was due to take effect four months ago, but the rush to buy the kits has led to supplies being sold out, which has led to a moratorium on the introduction of the devices. According to the French authorities, the regulation, the first of its kind to be introduced in the European Union, will also affect foreign drivers who drive in France, although they will not be required to have the device installed in their vehicles until November. In addition, breathalysers will also be obligatory in all discotheques and bars which have a licence to open at night.

By implementing this law, the French government hopes to save 500 lives a year, due to the presence of alcohol being detected in almost a third of all fatal accidents occurring in France. In addition to this regulation, the French authorities have approved a packet of measures aimed at reducing the accident rate on roads, which include: • An increase on the road network in the number of fixed speed cameras to 2,500, which will not be signposted. • The introduction of new generation mobile speed cameras, which allow a travelling police car to measure speed. • All motorists must carry a high-visibility vest and a warning triangle.

Piqué at his Peak I

t’s fair to say things are going well for Barcelona’s Gerard Piqué; as well as winning the Euros and being part of the first side to win three international tournaments in a row; the footballer is dating Colombian pop sensation Shakira and is the face of H.E by MANGO. The photo shoot for his recent campaign took place in Paris’ Studio Rouchon during which Piqué explained,

58

“I’ve followed fashion since the time I was 15 or 16. I like it and I have confidence in my choices. But when I do a big campaign like this one, I let the experts take charge.”

Born in Barcelona in 1987 into an FC Barcelona-mad family, Piqué was scouted at the age of ten and recruited to FC Barcelona’s youngest boys’ team. The footballer then spent the next seven years rising through the ranks of Barcelona’s youth systems before becoming a key member of Barcelona’s reserve squad, helping the team to a youth Copa del Rey title. However shortly after his first year with the reserves, Pique decided to pursue first-team football in England, infuriating Barcelona fans, especially the president, Joan La Porta, who vowed Pique would never play for the team again, accusing the defender of betraying the Spanish side. Throughout his time at FC Barcelona Pique trained alongside well-established players like Lionel Messi and Cesc Fábregas and before making his debut in 2005 with Manchester United. He was later transferred to FC Barcelona. Following the announcement of his shock return to the Spanish team Piqué expressed his joy at re-signing with his boyhood club, although he admitted he had enjoyed his spell at Manchester United. “I am very happy to be back, I didn’t think I would be here again but this is very good for me. Manchester United is a great club and I enjoyed winning things. To play with world class

players has helped me and now I want to continue this at Barça.” Piqué is one of four players to have won the UEFA Champions League two years in a row with different teams. He was a key member of Spain’s defence that allowed just two goals en route to winning the 2010 World Cup. Piqué has become a solid presence in front of goal and also provides no small threat on the other side of the pitch. Following his 2010 World Cup win, Gerard was selected as the face of H.E by MANGO. Success and professionalism were essential requirements for the brand when choosing the young footballer. In addition, Gerard Piqué is the perfect representation of the type of man the brand aims to dress: young and carefree, with his own style and personality. Speaking of his collaboration with the label, Piqué announced, “I really like H.E. by MANGO, it’s a great brand because of the quality, the design

and the price.

H.E. by MANGO, which currently has 103 points of sale (32 in Spain and 71 abroad), and aims to reach 500 points of sale in the coming years. For 2012, 25 new points of sale are planned, focusing on European and Asian markets including countries such as Spain, France, the Philippines, Malaysia, Russia and Thailand.

H.E. by MANGO was created in 2008 to offer men a contemporary and modern men’s fashion range. Its style is based on updating the classics by giving them the required touch of fashion, adapting the trends to create a simple, every day, urban style. Clothing available from mango.com

Monthy Legal Advice

If they don’t pay my salary, WHAT SHOULD I DO? In modern times, many companies facing the current economic crisis are unable to pay wages to their employees, placing the employee in a situation of confusion, since they are providing services without being paid for them. What does one do in a situation of this kind? Do you keep working? Can I strike? The non-payment of wages or continued delays in their payment entitles the worker to apply for a discharge of the labour contract through the social courts using art. 50.1.b) ET. For a successful causebased adjudicative “non-payment or late payment on a continuing basis the agreed wage,” the concurrence of the requirement of “gravity” in business failure is necessary and such “gravity” must be determined and assessed.

If the worker fails to report to work, it shall be construed as voluntary withdrawal, with a corresponding loss of the action and unemployment benefits. That is unless the work was generating a distressing situation, either dangerous or humiliating to the worker, in which case the decision to leave work would not cause resignation on their part or any other form of breakdown of the employment relationship.

Before seeking judicial termination of the contract, must I have tried to claim my wages out of court?

No, requesting the termination does not require the worker to previously attempt

If the delay or default is serious/continuous, this will be judged on the following criteria:

If they don’t pay my wages, must I continue working?

For the success of a court action, it is a prerequisite that the employment relationship is still alive at the time of action, as judicially speaking the end of the relationship would be considered voluntary redundancy if broken beforehand. So as a rule the worker must remain in office until the final judgment.

What happens if the company is bankrupt?

The individual enforcement actions filed after the insolvency declaration will be halted pending the outcome of it. Therefore, it will be necessary to wait for the measures which are chosen to be adopted from the proceedings. If the bankruptcy proceedings caused the extinction of your contract, this would cause a lack of action because as previously mentioned, it is inescapable requirement that the employment relationship is alive. In this case, the general rules for a collective dismissal will apply, providing compensation of 20 days per year of service, for up to a maximum of 12 months compensation. It is very important that in situations of economic crisis/bankruptcy that the employee acts quickly in order to achieve the highest possible compensation.

* Objective: That the failure or delay in payment is regardless of the guilt of the company * Temporary non-payment or delay must be continued and persistent over time and quantitative * Quantitative: the amount of the debt. There are graver consequences if the nonpayment of wages is not a mere sporadic delay but instead persistent behaviour, meaning the continuous failure to meet wages due. It should be noted that paying the amount of wages overdue before the conclusion of the hearing eliminates the possibility of a successful action for serious non-payment.

rules enables them to complete a form for the change in working conditions – either a suspension or termination, “ex” arts 41, 47, 51 or 52c ET. However they cannot obtain a remission or postponement in the payment of wage obligations on their own authority or against the will of the worker concerned.

What would I receive if my lawsuit is successful?

claiming their wages from the employer. The employer is obliged to comply with the Statute of the timely payment of wages.

What if the company is in a serious economic situation, does this prevent me from bringing proceedings?

No, regardless of whether the company is facing a serious economic crisis, if there are delays in payment of wages to an employee with sufficient gravity, this will constitute good cause for the judicial termination of the employment contract. If this economic crisis prevents the employer from complying with its obligation to the timely payment of wages, then the statutory

The legal scope for compensation is specifically provided in paragraph 2 of Article 50 in conjunction with 56.1 a) of the Workers’ Statute. It states that the compensation provided for unfair dismissal shall be 33 days per year of service, limited to the number specified in that provision. After the judge has declared the termination of employment, it may then be possible to request unemployment benefits. HOPES AND PROMISES By Jesper Hertz

At the end of June, EU leaders agreed on a recapitalisation of struggling banks with the help of eurozone bailout mechanisms, whereby funds will be channelled to needy banks directly, rather than via their respective governments. The loans in question will not be ranked higher in terms of ‘seniority’ than private sector loans to the banks concerned, i.e. in the event of a sovereign default, the bailout loans will not be treated preferentially. Furthermore, it was agreed to establish a supervisory body for the eurozone banking sector, and a new growth package was announced. The EU has heralded these developments as a “breakthrough”, although long-suffering investors and eurozone citizens may be forgiven for asking why such measures were not introduced much sooner. The delay has largely been due to politicians pursuing national self-interest rather than the interests of the eurozone as a whole. Germany has long resisted the idea of collective debt responsibility (e.g. via Eurobonds), claiming that this would not oblige fiscally

profligate nations to be more disciplined, whereas countries like Spain and Italy have been unwilling to cede any budgetary responsibility to a higher, centralised authority. Leading up to the endJune summit, there had been a growing sense of impending disaster should this impasse remain unresolved. As such, the summit was a compromise (notably between Germany on the one hand and Spain and Italy, backed by France, on the other) born of desperation – but better late than never.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END OR THE END OF THE BEGINNING?

Given the political restraints of individual member states, therefore, these are bold steps. They are also necessary and long overdue. However, while most of the agreed initiatives address immediate problems, such as restoring confidence in the European banking sector, they do not provide a comprehensive and practicable long-term solution to the eurozone crisis. Although the initial response in the financial markets was positive, borrowing costs for the likes of Spain and Italy remain worryingly, and unsustainably, high.

responsibility. Additional

EU leaders cannot afford to rest on their laurels at this stage. The outcome of the summit

was simply a milestone on a very long road. There is still much that needs to be done, such as a mechanism for ensuring that governments act with greater discipline in terms of financial

growth initiatives and structural reforms, especially in the labour market, are necessary. Fiscal

transfers may yet be needed to address the competitiveness gap between Germany and southern Europe. And, should the new banking measures ultimately prove insufficient, there may be a requirement to establish a panEU banking union. If further integration follows, the EU may finally be moving towards federalism. nordeaprivatebanking.com

Our in-depth motoring review

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the latest NOVITEC ROSSO ITALIA SPIDER

M

odern Ferraris still look good in red, but they can look even better in metallic colours. The 458 Italia for instance, looks good in white and yellow as well as bright metallic colours.

The Italia Spider I am driving today is yellow, and it looks spectacular, especially with the aero parts and larger diameter satin black-painted wheels that distinguish this version from Novitec Rosso, Germany’s premier Ferrari tuner.

95

TORQUE TALK

Even the bees out in the country think it is wonderful, and we have to constantly shoo them away during the photo shoot. They must think this is the biggest, most expensive flower in history! The Novitec Rosso Italia Spider is not just about show however. With 609hp and 569Nm of torque, up from 570hp and 540Nm, it shows noticeable gains in performance.

96

The changes start with an ECU remap, and the electronic cut-out is moved up to 9,100rpm. Novitec Rosso normally uses the highest quality stainless steel for their street legal exhausts. This time however, in the search for weight saving and better heat dissipation properties, they turned to Inconel, the material used for the exhaust systems of Formula One cars.

This Inconel system includes headers, 200-cell free-flow metal catalysts and a rear silencer box with a sound flap operated from the Manettino. It is a high-performance exhaust system in every respect since its lower backpressure liberates a few more horses, and removes a massive 22kg from the extreme rear of the car. The resulting lower polar moment of inertia benefits both ride and

TORQUE TALK

One of the best aspects of Novitec Rosso’s lightweight sports exhaust is its totally Jekyll and Hyde character... handling and apparently makes the car even more progressive when power-sliding in Race or TC Off mode! There are so many aftermarket exhausts that boom and tizz all the time. That might be fun for five minutes, but it quickly becomes annoying when you are not in the mood.

One of the best aspects of Novitec Rosso’s lightweight sports exhaust is its totally Jekyll and Hyde character. When you are driving normally or at cruise, it is as refined and civilised as the standard system, allowing you to chat with your passenger or listen to the stereo without turning up the wick on either. However, when you feel the need for speed on your favourite road,

and snap the throttle wide open with the exhaust valve bypass selected on the Manettino, the orchestra behind your head goes into full mezzoforte mode. Every nuance of the standard engine and its multi-faceted exhaust note is now amplified all the way through the rev range, with a touch more bass than stock balancing out the flat-plane

TORQUE TALK

crank V8’s primal scream beyond 6,000rpm and all the way to the 9,100rpm cut-out. I drove the Berlinetta version last year and it was exciting to hear the motor sing through its repertoire of notes then. However, with its roof panel neatly folded away, the open Spider transformed the experience into something truly epic. Experienced al fresco, the soundtrack is not just different in intensity, it is in a whole different league of sensory stimulation that made my instinctive reaction go from “Oh, that is nice” in the Berlinetta to “Oh my God, I really need one of these!” in the Spider. It has been a very long time since I have felt a reaction like that to any car. Novitec Rosso is never the first to market with engine conversions.

98

Their marketing chief, Dirk Moersdorf, explained why. “We never rush into engine work because we have to ensure perfect reliability in the field. So if our development and testing takes longer, then that is the way it must be for us to confidently apply our warranty.”

Before Ferrari moved to active damping, larger wheels and uprated suspension was a recipe for the jitters on less than smooth tarmac. Not anymore. If you thought the F430 had a civilised ride for a supercar, the Italia is simply in a different league.

“The latest generation Ferrari V8 engines use direct injection, and we are testing our single supercharger conversion on the California’s DFI system right now. When we are satisfied that the technology works perfectly, only then will we apply this to the twin supercharger Italia conversion.”

On its standard 19 and 20-inch footwear, the Italia rides almost as well as the average family car, with a secondary ride that defies all logic for a low riding, supercar.

In the interim, thanks to the freer flowing exhaust and an ECU remap to optimise the ignition and fuelling, Italia owners can still get a useful power boost.

At 9.0J x 21 and 12.0J x 22-inches, front and rear respectively, the Novitec Rosso NF3 alloys are an inch larger in diameter than factory issue and the 255/30ZR21 and 335/25ZR22 Pirellis rubber even lower in profile. I am not a big fan of black painted wheels because they hide the shape of the wheel. After all, if

TORQUE TALK

you have spent a lot of money on attractive wheels, don’t you want the world to see them? In this case however, Novitec Rosso wanted to show off the black carbon-fibre rim insert they offer as an option on their multi-piece wheels. These inserts look best on a black or dark grey wheel, so this yellow car ended up with black wheels. I literally cringed when I was told about the 15 percent stiffer sport springs that drop the ride height by 35mm, and read the big numbers on the sidewalls of these rubber band tyres. However, it only took a few kilometres on the surrounding country roads to establish that the changes are so well calibrated as a system that they increase the Italia’s roll stiffness in bends while hardly de-

tracting from its low speed bump absorption. The ride is still supple, and bumps easily rounded off, and you can feel the inherently compliant suspension shrugging off undulations in its bounce mode, while pulling everything back together again immediately with its perfect rebound control. For an open car on such big wheels, the ride is both supple and perfectly controlled. The baseline to this impressive performance is a bodyshell with exceptional torsional rigidity, which allows for relatively soft suspension ratings. Matched to the active damping, this formula allows the suspension to ‘breath’ as the car moves down the road. The lowering springs are very much a market dependent accessory.

If you live in a place with lots of ramps and speed bumps, you really should not go there. Instead, tick the box for Novitec Rosso’s hydraulic front lift kit that raises the nose by 40mm for extra ground clearance to keep the expensive carbon-fibre spoiler away from these man-made obstacles. Activated by a button in the cabin, the front lift kit works equally well with the lowering springs. In either case, the system has a sensor that automatically returns the car to normal ride height at 80km/h, or you can lower it manually. The only part of the aero kit that an owner has to consider is the rear spoiler. This is because there are two options. The one fitted to the yellow demo car is subtle and best described as a Gurney flap on the trailing edge of the rear deck.

99

TORQUE TALK Tests in the University of Stuttgart’s wind tunnel prove that it does reduce lift over the rear axle at speed, but not as much as the optional angled rear wing that sits about 75mm above the rear deck on two struts. All the aero kit’s components are made from black carbon-fibre. These start with the front spoiler lower extensions, the two ‘whiskers’ in the front valance, the air ducts beside the headlamps, side sill extensions, rear underbody diffuser, engine cover surround ventilation grilles, rear deck panel, and the distinctive black roof. The only nonfunctional pieces are the exterior mirror inserts. The engine bay is a carbon-fibre fest. The big airbox grabs your attention immediately, creating a nice visual lead-in to the two red crackle-finished intake plenums.

100

It takes you a few seconds to stop staring at this enthusiasts’ delight and realise that Novitec Rosso’s carbon-fibre side panels now hide the painted inner wings and bulkhead. Open a door, and you will see even more carbon-fibre in the cabin. In this case, the factory carbon-fibre cockpit pack was ordered along with the Daytona style leather with yellow stitching. Novitec Rosso then added their sill kick plates and the centre console insert that provides extra stowage space for small objects. We think the console insert makes the cabin look more complete anyway. Another practical addition is Novitec Rosso’s paddle shifters, also made from carbon-fibre. Almost double the length of the factory paddles, they allow you to up or downshift more easily when you have steering lock applied.

They say music is the food of life. Ferrari fans would like to think that the mechanical orchestra behind your head provides all the music you need. As we noted earlier, the Italia is relatively quiet at cruise, and the Novitec Rosso exhaust does little to change that until you drop the hammer. Novitec Rosso are quick to say that they do not make a Ferrari better than a factory car. Rather, they personalise Ferrari cars for clients who instinctively lean more towards sporty driving than average. Their Italia Spider is a perfect example of this, and fills in the gaps the factory have left open due to cost. Wealthy individuals do not like to own the same things as others, and as mass-produced cars become more complete and appeal to a wider audience than ever before, the demand for personalisation on even expensive and exclusive cars like the Italia Spider rises with it.

uite del Mar is one of Marbella’s classic summer dining experiences, fabulously situated on the water’s edge at the iconic Puente Romano hotel. Offering cocktails at the beach bar, an Asian-Mediterranean fusion menu and the excellent cabana-style nightclub, this venue is a dynamite combination. The inauguration party at the end of June each year heralds the opening of the coast’s summer social calendar, and the great and the good gather to enjoy an evening spectacle of fire eaters, entertainers, fireworks and some of the best DJ’s in Europe. Part chillout lounge, part stylish chiringuito, the outside restaurant offers a multifaceted experience: daytime and evening sunbathing with food and drink service direct to the large white sunbeds, Sheesha pipes in the small Moroccan lounge area, or a diverse menu under fairy-lit sun umbrellas. Atmosphere is paramount here, and we arrived just as the sun was setting and enjoyed a glass of chilled rose at the bar while taking in unparalleled views of the La Concha mountain and the lights of the coast stretched before us. We were soon seated by the wonderful Rafa, Suite del Mar’s long serving and ever-smiling maître d’.

104

By Heather Sadtler

The challenge for any venue as renowned as this one is to provide a standard of food that keeps up with its eminent reputation. The menu is long and varied, combining Mediterranean surf and turf and Andalucian classics with MiddleEastern influences and a selection of sushi. Gastronomic globe-trotting such as this can be the downfall of many a menu, but Suite manages to honour all cuisines with flair and quality. We decided to try a selection and started with a focus on seafood, as recommended to us by the ever-attentive Rafa. We started with a Tower of Lobster and Crab with tropical fruit and lime juice – apparently a speciality of the house. For a fresh summer dish, it was the perfect choice and a real palate freshener, fusing light citric bite with the richness of the seafood and a subtle fruit sweetness. Visually it was impressive too, using height and colour to lift it out of the ordinary. The Tuna Tartare with guacamole and wonton cracker for me was a test of the chef´s true ability. Such a ubiquitous seasonal dish needed to have something special and this did not disappoint, the quality of the fish was excellent and perfectly seasoned so as not to detract from the exquisite taste of the tuna. So

COSTA CUISINE

often overly spiced or covered in ginger or other Oriental flavours, I found the softness of the guacamole and the crunch of the wonton to be just enough to complement rather than overpower the fish. Vegetarians are well catered for and we decided to try a simple alliterative salad of artichoke, asparagus and avocado. Again not as simple as it sounds, the texture of each vegetable is key and the combination of rigidity, softness and dressing was a wholly successful alliance. Moving onto mains, we were again encouraged to opt for some seafood specialities, beautifully accompanied by a subtle rose Muga. Some stunningly presented giant Spider Crab claws were paraded in front of us and then thankfully taken away to be prepared and de-shelled. This was seafood at its best, simple and uncomplicated for those who enjoy its pure rich decadence, and unaccompanied by any distracting side dishes. At this stage Rafa stepped in and cleverly realized we would benefit from a perfectly cooked steak and rushed off to ask the kitchen to bring out their best. The beef fillet that materialized five minutes later was stunning and the highlight of the meal for me. The Galician meat, which is the best Spain has to offer, was cooked to perfection, literally melting in the mouth and cooked on an open grill to bring in

real summer flavour. This dish is a must for anyone who knows their steak and will convert you to Northern-Spanish beef forever. We decided to keep things light for dessert, and a fresh crisp fruit salad was the perfect denoument to our gourmet adventures. We left Suite del Mar happily sated, and extremely well looked after. The staff had been attentive, informative and friendly, the menu well balanced and impressively presented, and the wine well chosen and free flowing. One can really not ask for more on a balmy summer evening at the edge of the Mediterranean sea. Suite del Mar Playa del Hotel Puente Romano Tel. Dianka 630 962 852 / Rafa 676 920 474

FOIE GRAS

truffé or not truffé? By Padre Peter

T

he Nazi Régime in Germany was so fond of geese that not only did it favour the ‘Goose Step,’ but it banned the production of Foie Gras. The State of California has followed suit (the Ban, not the Goose Step). From the 1st July it is now illegal to produce or sell Foie Gras, and any miscreant found so doing faces a fine of $1000. Chicago tried this in 2006, but recently rescinded the ban as being unworkable and laughable. (One has visions of some latter day Al Capone creeping across the city boundary bearing clandestinely produced fat liver (a literal translation!) in greaseproof- paper- lined violin cases.) It didn’t work in Germany, either. Today, the good burghers consume nearly 160 tonnes of this delicacy each year; imported from France,

106

where Strasbourg was for centuries regarded as the Foie Gras capital of Europe, and therefore of the world. France still produces about 80% of the total world production, which rather dwarfs the United States’ 1.5%. Under French law (for both goose and duck) you may have Foie Gras entier (made from whole livers), Foie Gras (made from pieces of liver), Bloc de Foie Gras (98% of moulded liver), Parfait de Foie Gras (which must contain 75% liver), and Pâte de Foie Gras (or Mousse de Foie Gras; both of which must contain at least 50% liver). The inventor of Pâte de Foie Gras in 1779, the chef JeanJoseph Clause, was awarded twenty pistoles (roughly $160) by a grateful Louis XVI (whose own gullet, of course, had an unfortunate encounter with Madame la Guillotine 14 years later).

The author, a Worker-Priest, is a Maître Conseil en Gastronomie Française, and holds the Palmes Culinaires and Mâitrise Escoffier of the Conseil Culinaire de Grande Bretagne. He is a former Maître de Table de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, a member of the Craft Guild of Chefs of Great Britain, and was for many years National Secretary of the Association Culinaire Française de Grande Bretagne. In 1978 he was a Runner-up in the “Chef of the Year” competition at Hotelympia. He holds the Silver Medal of the Cookery and Food Association.

The Governor of Alsace, on the other hand, who presented the Pâté at court, was granted an entire estate! The Californian diktat is all embracing; production and consumption. Other States which have banned production (notably Italy, Israel, and Denmark, to name but three) have not banned consumption. (Even now the good citizens of California are probably clandestinely consuming the delicacy from tea cups, as in the days of Prohibition.)

The reason for the ban on production is, of course, on account of the method employed; “Gavage”. This

was first developed by the Egyptians about 2,500 B.C., and when about a

COSTA CUISINE thousand years later the Jews headed for a land flowing with milk and honey, they took along the recipe for Foie Gras. It then spread amongst the Greeks and Romans and, finally, the French. The process is easy (unless it happens to be your gullet under attack.) Migratory birds need to put on weight. Toulouse geese and Mulard ducks (favoured for the production of Foie Gras on account of their appetites) have large throats and crops. In the normal course of events before migration they may double their weight but the good husbandman does not want them to migrate, so he pens them up. To assist them to gain weight he then introduces a metal, or sometimes rubber, tube into their throats and forces into them a mush of maize and fat. This happens twice daily with ducks and four times daily with geese. The liver grows up to ten times its normal size. The bird is killed, and the liver is removed. There are then various way of dealing with it, but the writer can recommend the “au torchon” method, when the whole liver is placed in a very hot terrine, which is then covered with seven thicknesses of French army blanket, and left on the kitchen table overnight. When cooked it is smooth, sweet and silky. Sidney Smith (17711845), the great cleric, journalist

and wit, once opined that Paradise is eating Foie Gras to the sound of trumpets. I concur. Once, as a guest of the Comité Interprofessionnelle du Vin de Champagne, I found myself sitting on the terrace of a château near Reims eating Foie Gras poëllé as the local huntsmen tunefully sounded their horns. Heaven indeed! But cruel? Surprisingly enough, the jury is still out on that one. Some producers maintain that production is not harmful to the birds’ health. Quite how they manage to extract the livers without damaging the fowl remains a mystery, but if they mean that Gavage has little or no effect upon the birds’ gullets, they are quite correct. These throats are large and commodious, and provided the stuffer is careful, little or no damage is done to the stuffee. (The Suffragettes in Holloway similarly survived – and managed to keep their livers). The ‘American Association of Avian Pathologists’ has concluded that the production is not cruel. The European Union begs to differ, and has produced 89 pages explaining why. Even this, however, admits that there is no conclusive evidence regarding the damaging nature of gavage, although it does state that during the study the birds indicated an “aversion

for the person who feeds them and the feeding procedure”. The advance of a Gauloise smoking, garlic breathing, bristly bucolic peasant wielding a metal or rubber hose, cannot be said to be one of the most joyous experiences of one’s life, however avian or hungry one might be. However, pace Margaret Thatcher, there IS an alternative! And a Spanish one! In 2006 the “Patería de Sousa”, founded in 1812 in the sparse and arid countryside of Extramadura, won the prestigious Coupe de Coeur at the International Food Fair in Paris for its humane Foie Gras. The French went bananas, and accused everybody from the Spanish government downwards of cheating and bribery. When that failed, they declared that it was not really Foie Gras. Why not? No gavage! True.

In Extramadura the birds have free rein to eat and wander. They stuff themselves on

corn and figs (the main ingredient for Roman Iecur Ficatum, a predecessor of Foie Gras). They also ingest various herbs, which add to the delicate flavour of the product. The livers never manage to reach a factor of ten, but they are large, and they are delicately tasty!

Holding down the fort is General Manager, Dom Aldworth who boasts many years of experience. “I started out in the hospitality industry for the same reason as most youngsters; to earn some money whilst travelling. However I then decided to complete a bar tending course in America and my passion evolved from there,” he explained. Involved from day one, Dom assisted with the concept and design from the beginning whilst also creating the diversely authentic menu. “Being part of the process from conception has heightened my adoration for the restaurant and enabled me to add my own touch to the project,” Dom continued. “One thing we particularly wanted to ensure was that despite being located in Puerto Banus, that our prices didn’t reflect the traditional assumption of Banus prices. With our burgers starting at only €9.66 and our fantastic kids menu for only €5.66 including a main course, dessert and a drink, I think we succeeded on that front.” Although part of the focus when creating Route 66 was on value for money the only part was on quality. “It wasn’t about finding the supplier who offered us the cheapest produce, it was about finding the best suppliers on the coast to ensure great quality and great value.” “One of the aspects I love most about Route 66 is our team of staff, I can’t take

all the credit,” chuckled Dom modestly.

“I have worked within a lot of companies in my lifetime and never have I had such a solid, focused team who communicate so well, again it all comes down to quality; quality team, quality establishment.”

Having always enjoyed a passion for fine wines Dom welcomes the opportunity to invite customers into Route 66’s private wine cellar to select their dinner accompaniment. “We are very proud to work with two of the best wine suppliers on the coast offering the finest selection of Spanish and International wines,” shared Dom, “some might not expect an American diner to boast such an extensive collection; however we knew we wanted to offer a truly unique experience for our diners.”

It’s not only the hospitality element of Route 66 that excites Dom, a keen sports enthusiast, he presents his own sports show on Talk Radio Europe where he has had the opportunity to interview some of the world’s greatest sports stars. “I love sports and I will happily sit and discuss everything from cricket to football to tennis with our customers in the bar; we have all the sports channels and multiple screens to ensure we can cover ever sporting event. You can even watch outside on our terrace whilst lapping up the sunshine!” What more could you ask for! COSTA CUISINE

WINE and ANDALUS By Padre Peter

J

ohn Masefield once wrote “Oh some are fond of Spanish wine…” – a very perspicacious poet! Quite apart from anything else, wine drinking is a religious duty! In the Book of Ecclesiastes we are enjoined “Drink thy wine with a merry heart!” and Esdras asks

“What life is then to a man that is without wine?” What indeed!?

Even the straight-laced Saint Paul, doubtless on the advice of “Luke, the beloved physician”, admonishes the sick Timothy “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities”. Sound counsel! And hundreds of years later the rubicund Sir John Falstaff enthused: “If I had a thousand sons, the first human principle I would teach them should be, to forswear thin potions and to addict themselves to Sack”. This, of course, refers to Sherry, although wines from Málaga were equally, if not more, popular in Europe at the period. The Tsar of Russia himself was fond of a tipple from Málaga.

There are four main wine producing regions in Andalusia: The Jerez-de-la-Frontera/Sanlúcar-de-Barrameda/Puertode-Santa-Maria triangle; Málaga and its hinterland; Montilla-Moriles, south of Córdoba; and the Condado de Huelva. This last region lives in the shadow of its mighty neighbour – Sherry – but it has the distinction of having been the first region to export its wines to America. In 1492, when Cristóbal

Colón set sail from Palos, he was well supplied with Huelva wine, probably made from the white

Zalema grape, which still accounts for some 85% of the total production of this region. In 1502 the export trade began in earnest, but declined at the end of the 19th century on account of the phylloxera plague. Even so, the region’s wines rejoice in the title of “Vinos de Descubrimiento”, to celebrate the fact that they participated in the discovery of the New World. This is also the region that produces Andalusia’s only spar-

kling wine, Raigal. Its traditional wine, Condado Viejo, is an oloroso-style fortified wine which goes well with the local ham, but the area also now produces a light, somewhat thin, refreshing white wine which can accompany seafood. If, however, we look at Andalusian wine in terms of seniority, then pride of place must go to Málaga. It was the Greeks who began the production of Xarabal Malaguii (Málaga Syrup) about 600 BC, and later the Moors continued its production as Xarab Almalaqui (despite the strictures of the Holy Qur-ân!). Even as Sherry was beginning to be produced around the beginning of the 13th century, Málaga wine was already the subject of strict supervision at the hands of a specialised Brotherhood, whose headquarters exist to this day in the Plaza de la Constitución in Málaga itself. It is a fortified wine on account of the fact that in the 1500s it was found that the addition of a little brandy helped preserve it on long voyages and coping with varying

temperatures. The Tsar of the frozen north could not be disappointed! The four main varieties which exist today are the superlative Lagrima – a very sweet wine produced simply from the weight of the grapes themselves pressing out the juice; Moscatel – made, as its name implies, solely from muscatel grapes; Pedro Ximenez – again a one grape variety production; and Solera – which comes from a blend of the two grape varieties using the “solera” system (about which, more anon). The wine resides in barrels for at least two years, and whilst most of it is sweet, dry varieties also exist. These dry varieties, like Condado Viejo, display an Oloroso style. This style is, of course, most thought of in terms of Sherry. It is dark and full-bodied, with a hint of sweetness and a nutty flavour. It is also fairly powerful, coming in at between 18 and 20 degrees of alcohol. It may well have been this which attracted Sir Francis Drake when, in 1587, he “singed the King of Spain’s beard”, attacking Cádiz,

destroying the Spanish fleet, and making off with 2,900 butts of “Sherris wine”. This name derived from the fact that Jerez at the time was called “Xeris”, which was beyond the linguistic competence of the average monoglot Englishman. The wine is produced on chalky soil mainly from the hardy “Palomino Fino” grape. “Pedro Ximénez” and “Moscatel” are also used to add a little sweetness. The Palomino is first used to produce a dry white wine, which is then fortified with spirits, and put into barrels which are only two thirds full. Gradually “flor” develops during the spring and autumn. This is a layer of white yeast on the top of the wine. From time to time the vintner tests the wine using a “venencia”, which is a narrow silver phial on a long rod. Wines

with particularly good “flor” become Fino sherry. An “Amon-

tillado” develops from an ageing Fino, whilst “Manzanilla” is a very dry Fino from Sanlúcar-de-Barrameda (where, as a result of the climate, the “Flor” blooms all the year round). The gradual ageing

process itself takes place in the “Solera” system, where at least three barrels are stacked on top of each other, with the oldest on the suelo (floor). As the bottom barrel empties, so it is filled with wine from the barrels above. Some “soleras” had their origins in the 19th century! “Cream” sherry is produced when sweet wine from “Pedro Ximénez” grapes is added to an Oloroso. It is this grape which is the predominant variety in the Montilla-Moriles area south of Córdoba. Once again the solera system is used, with the result that the wines produced parallel their more famous cousins from Jerez (although here spirits are not used). Unlike Jerez, however, an almost black, sweet thick wine is also produced from sun-dried grapes. The wines of this region first entered the public consciousness in the mid 19th century as a result of participation in various International Wine Fairs, where, as now, they held their own against more established names.

he only outdoor adventure park on the coast, Aventura Amazonia is also the largest in the whole of Andalucía. Merely 500 metres from the beach, this family day out contains a total of 83 challenges plus 20 zip lines distributed over six circuits. ‘Minikids’, just for the little ones, starts our Amazonian adventure; the area is made up of ten challenges all suitable for under sevens. In addition, handicraft workshops take place on a timely basis, sharing the flora and fauna within the forest with the youngsters. A crèche is also on site offering mums and dads the option to put on a harness and head for the skies. ‘Kids’ offers the next step up the difficulty ladder; a circuit especially designed for the young ones, made up of short, easy challenges at a very low height. The challenges are set out so parents can accompany their children as they play, if they wish. If some not-so-adventurous adults are in your group, ‘Explorador’ is the course for them. Alternatively, ‘Jungla’ also includes a large climbing wall and offers a selection of more stimulating challenges. Prior to commencing the activities, you will be required to take part in the introductory course where you will learn

how to handle the safety equipment and take part in a practice run on a special learners circuit. The monitors will also teach you the park’s safety regulations and you will learn how to move easily from tree to tree, slide independently along each zip line, jump in the liana challenges and scale the climbing wall. After the introductory course, you will then be able to select the circuit of your choice keeping within the capabilities for your age and height. ‘Aventura’ takes the adrenaline to the next level with the last challenge comprising of the longest zip line in Andalucía, whilst ‘Deportivo’ encompasses the famous Tarzan leap and an amazing surfboard through the treetops. Your ticket provides you with three hours of play, enabling you to participate in the multi-adventure circuits as many times as you like, offering hours of endless fun. If you need to take a break from the white-knuckle activities, why not head to the nearby shopping centre or on site cafeteria for a moment to relax and rejuvenate? Strategically located in the heart of the Costa del Sol, Aventura Amazonia is less than twenty minutes from the main coastal towns, Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Benalmadena, providing an easy-to-reach adventure for the entirety of the Costa del Sol. JOANNA the Dog Groomer

W

By Christie Holland

ith over twenty years’ experience, Joanna really is THE dog groomer. Having previously owned a dog grooming parlour in England, Joanna moved to Spain ten years ago to raise her children and has continued to utilise her talents overseas. Situated just ten minutes from the La Cala market, Joanna welcomes dogs of all shapes and sizes. When I took along my five-year-old King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, Troy and my one-year-old exceptionally scruffy Pomeranian, Lee-Lou for their first encounter one of the first things Joanna informed me was that she would be using no form of restraints on the dogs. Unlike many grooming parlours that tie up or pin down

Joanna treats every dog as if they were her own and remains with them at all times, allowing them to freely roam the grooming table.

the dogs,

Joanna normally asks the owners to leave when she begins grooming as from experience she is aware that dogs are a lot more likely to ‘act up,’ when their owners are around, (much like children,) however on this occasion I was allowed to stay and watch. Troy was in desperate need of a haircut and due to the rise in temperature recently we decided to opt to have him completely shaved except for his ‘socks’ and tail. Joanna explained the range of options to us including leaving a skirt, cutting his ears etc. She then commenced by shaving Troy explaining that this particular blade was not often used by other groomers as if used incorrectly it could result in bald patches but when used properly it provided the best results. I knew we were in safe hands, particularly when Troy appeared all finished and bald patch free! In addition to the standard haircut Joanna will also remove any fleas and ticks and offer you the correct guidance on how to resolve the issue if required, as well as clip your dog’s toenails, pluck their ears if required and empty the anal glands. Joanna continued on to explain that if your dog is ‘a blank canvas,’ i.e. knot free, you can even design your own haircut. However if your dog’s fur is matted, knotty or they have a skin infection this will limit your options.

After Joanna had finished shaving Troy she then washed him. “I like to wash the dog after shaving,” she explained, “as it removes al the remaining sharp clipped hair pieces.” After empting the anal glands and shampooing and conditioning, Troy was moved back to the grooming table to be blow dried before having his toenails clipped and ears checked. Throughout the process Joanna constantly reassured Troy, cuddling him and stroking him at any opportunity to ensure he felt safe and comfort-

“I hope you don’t mind me spoiling him?” Joanna

cheerfully joked. He seemed exceptionally pleased with himself when he was finally placed on the floor, it might have been because he felt half his body weight lighter or it could have been because myself and my sister couldn’t stop laughing at him! In addition to offering a grooming service, Joanna also breeds French Bull Dogs, rehomes dogs on the coast and provides information and assistance for dogs with Leishmaniasis, the disease transported by mosquitos. One thing is for certain, Joanna loves dogs. Gone are the days when you had to drag your dog to the groomers as I’m pretty sure all dogs will love Joanna too! HOME SWEET HOME

ADANA, (Association for the Rights of Abandoned Animals) an animal charity on the Costa del Sol run entirely by volunteers, aims to provide facilities for the shelter and care of abandoned, sick and injured animals, assisting the local authorities and promoting understanding, respect and affection for animals. Each month, SOCIETY MARBELLA will share with you a small selection of the dogs and cats housed at ADANA, looking for a new home.

BUSINESS AS USUAL

1685 SIRIO

One of our longer standing residents Sirio has been at the kennels since January 2009. He is an enthusiastic, friendly boy who just loves attention, so much so that he even loves going to the vets! He looks like a dog version of Chewbacca. Surely there is a Star Wars fan out there who would like a dog!? He would dearly love to find a home!

2615B RIKA

Rika and Kira are two German Shepherd cross sisters who were brought to the kennels, terrified in the boot of a saloon car, pitch black and stiflingly hot! The two are wonderful, strong pups who love nothing more that lying in the food troughs like a pair of bookends. They are stunners!

Last month, Women in Business Spain celebrated their tenth anniversary with a slap up lunch, liberal quantities of wine and a lot of laughs in the humble grounds of Tikitano in Estepona, reinforcing all the reasons why the organisation has been such a success over the last decade. Women in Business Spain started out as a small group of ladies meeting in Marbella, today it is considered to be one of the most effective female support systems on the Costa del Sol. It provides a platform for like-minded ladies to share ideas and of course to spread the word about their respective businesses and skills. Having reached the milestone ten year anniversary, the ladies of WIBS decided to really push the boat out, choosing the spectacular beach side restaurant Tikitano as the setting for a delicious celebratory lunch. Caroline Bowley, President of WIBs says “We are extremely proud that after ten years, WIBS is stronger than ever. When running a business, especially in hard times, support and inspiration are essential, and this is what WIBS does best”. wibspain.com tikitano.com redlinecompany.com

To offer Levante, Sirio, Rika or any of the other dogs at ADANA a home, contact the kennels on 952 113 467 or email adoptions@adana.es adana.es ADANA.Estepona

LONG LIVE FASHION

The most exciting new addition to the Marbella fashion scene is Vive La Reine, specialising in vintage clothing and one-off pieces along with a selective selection of the latest trends. Founded by Susie K and Tara Lorimer, who had become disillusioned by turning up at a premier event only to see their chosen dress on someone else, Vive la Reine’s pieces are beautiful and limited; they won’t be hanging on the rails for long. Vive La Reine boutique is brimming with an eclectic mix of beachwear to evening wear and everything in between; tassled bikinis, hand made crochet kaftans, frilled denim shorts, jewelled beach bags, silk printed full length whimsical dresses, diamante cocktail wear, one-off sequin capes and so much more. Featuring designers never before seen in Marbella such as Tanit Jeans Ibiza, The Vintage Queen and Ana Penam. Style savvy shoppers will be heading to Vive La Reine this summer with two locations to choose from; the Puerto Banus market (11am till 1am, 7 days a week) and Suite del Mar in the Puente Romano Hotel (11am till 7pm, 7 days a week), with Sunday lunchtime fashion shows in Suite del Mar throughout summer.

THE PLACE TO BE SEEN

Summer 2012 really has been the year for celebrity sightings here in Marbella. From the TOWIE crew descending on Nikki Beach and Sala Beach filming for their Marbella special, to David Bentley attending many of the beach club and discothèque openings, it really seems as though Marbella is the place to be seen. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, England’s up-and-coming footballing star has received a lot of press following being chosen to represent the England squad in June’s Euro’s. Following England´s elimination Alex headed to Marbella for some much needed down time and enjoyed an evening at La Sala, Puerto Banus. After sampling some of the chef’s culinary delights, Alex enjoyed spending quality time with a group of friends out on the bustling terrace. lasalabanus.com
