Summertime AND THE LIVING IS...
A
nyone who has spent summer on the Coast will know that this is the time of year when it all kicks off. Beach clubs open up and there is a party that has to be attended almost every night. It always makes me laugh when friends in the UK assume that life in Spain is all siestas because, and I think I speak for the whole team here when I say, “I wish!” Okay, we fully admit that we enjoy the social side of things but sometimes putting together a magazine while suffering from sleep deprivation isn’t the easiest thing in the world. Never mind, we have some great features lined up for you this month. Our cover girl will be recognisable to anyone who hasn’t spent the past 20 years or so living in a cave in Outer Mongolia. Elizabeth Hurley first captured the attention of the international press in 1994, when she accompanied her then boyfriend, Hugh Grant, to the LA premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral in a Gianni Versace designed dress held together with safety pins. Since then she has proved a reliable media favourite with her unpredictable love life and appearance in E!’s drama The Royals, among many other projects. In April 2005 she launched her own beachwear label in Harrods before it was rolled out to the world’s most prestigious stores. She has claimed that Elizabeth Hurley Beach was a project based on necessity, a way of earning money that wouldn’t disrupt her son, Damian’s schooling. Whatever the thinking behind it, this beachwear label has been a huge success, attracting positive comment from industry chiefs and punters alike. Of course, what we mostly love about Liz is the fact that she’s so enthusiastic about Marbella and, let’s face it, it’s the perfect place to model swimsuits!
HECTIC!
Talking about beachwear, have you heard about the latest app, Book My Sunbed? This will definitely revolutionise life for visitors and locals alike, since they will be able to say goodbye to having to get up at daybreak armed with a towel and use a smartphone instead. An app that encourages laziness? Hm, I’d say that that’s the kind of innovation that we like best. Tanya Vegar, our relationships expert, has some sterling advice on the subject of dating, which is just perfect for this time of year. People always think of the spring as the time of year that relationships start, but here on the Coast it seems as though summer is the time to find the perfect partner. Well, all those parties have a habit of throwing people together, so it’s not really surprising.

If you’re in the process of rethinking your exterior spaces for the summer then the design gurus at FOC have some excellent advice about how you can revive a tired garden, patio or terrace. If you’re looking for a way to freshen up your bedroom, however, you should definitely visit Yorkshire Linen’s store on Marbella’s Golden Mile. Whether you’re looking for a new mattress or some swanky new bed linen this is definitely the place to stock up before your seasonal visitors arrive.
SENIOR DESIGNER Alma Roda Ros
We also have an interview with Marbella’s own Virginia Macari, whose swimwear collection has been attracting favourable comments from fashionistas all along the Coast. I don’t know much about these things, but my better half has been very complimentary about Virginia’s designs, I can tell you. We are looking forward to a very busy summer here. Not only are we producing three magazines but there are more and more businesses opening every day and, since marketing is our middle name, we anticipate that much of our time will be spent promoting them. ‘Til next time... The Queen of Summer Olivia Park
Elizabeth Hurley has staying power. She also looks fabulous at 50 and a look at early photos of her when she burst onto the media scene in 1994 that Versace ‘safety pin’ dress on the arm of Hugh Grant shows that she has matured exceedingly gracefully. As an actress she’s still in demand and her stint the television dramas “Gossip Girl” revealed
her talent for playing a British ‘Mrs Robinson’ type character, which she followed with a sterling performance as Queen Helena in “The Royals”. Ms Hurley has long been a fan of Marbella and she enjoyed an Easter break at The Marbella Club this year, accompanied by her teenage son Damian, who has inherited both his

mother’s looks and her love of acting. It provided an excellent opportunity to talk to the star about her new summer season beachwear range that is now available in El Corte Inglés and The Marbella Club, as well as at her online store elizabethhurley. com. But, naturally, we wanted to talk about her acting success first.
Celebrity Spotlight
The Interview In 2015 you made a return to our screens in “The Royals” as Queen Helena. Was it as much fun working on it as it was to watch? Queen Helena is manipulative, glamorous and has questionable morals. I adore playing her and have a lot of fun. I channeled a combination of Joan Collins in Dynasty, Cruella de Ville in 101 Dalmations and every mother I know who wants the best for her family.
In The Royals, Joan Collins was one of your co-stars. It must have been exciting to work with her? Joan, playing The Grand Duchess of Oxfordshire and my character’s mother, was an absolute joy. We’d long wanted to work together and were thrilled when this opportunity came up. I think she is fabulous and want to be like her when I’m grown up.
pieces and pretty bikinis. I love creating chic but wearable pieces, focusing on sensual fit and jet-set influences. The collection is aimed at the fashionconscious woman who wants to bring an element of luxury and excitement into her vacation wardrobe.
In 2015, your Instagram post of you in a yellow bikini stunned fans and one publication said you had an ‘insane bikini body’. How do you manage to keep yourself ‘bikini body ready’ at 50? It’s never easy to stay in shape and I watch what I eat most of the time, but have little treats now and again. I
“Marbella is a beautiful place and I love relaxing there.”
Blue Camouflage Kaftan - Elizabeth Hurley Beach available at El Corte Inglés
And, what was it like playing Queen to hunky Vincent Regan’s King Simon?
Vincent is a very powerful actor and I really enjoyed our scenes together. His character is the voice of reason amidst the madness.
Is there more of this series in production?
Well, if you’re a “Royals” fan you’ll be delighted to know that Season 3 is being filmed over this summer. Liz was able to reveal “it will be brimming over with scandal and intrigue and, of course, my character Queen Helena is right in the thick of it. I’m also developing a cooking show, which will be shot in the English countryside in the autumn.” Gosh, this is one busy, busy woman!
Next question – what do you love about Marbella that keeps you coming back here? Marbella is a beautiful place and I love relaxing there. My son and I had a fantastic time at the Marbella Club and I’m really hoping to come back soon. My beachwear has always sold well in Spain - it is colourful and sexy and full of jet set glamour- perfect for the ladies of Marbella.
Well, we agree and the designs are so stunning that it’s hard to choose just one piece. So we asked Elizabeth about her personal highlights of this latest collection in El Corte Inglés and what particular style statement is she making with her beachwear. She told us: the range is full of rich colours and prints with flowing silk, sculpting one

try to eat food in its most natural form and avoid all processed foods. I walk every day with my dogs and force myself to run a bit, but I hate it. I enjoy Pilates classes which I do a few times a week at a wonderful club in London called Grace Belgravia. I have a lot of nervous energy and don’t sit still much, plus I do stomach and bottom exercises whilst I wait for my bath to fill every night. In addition to her penchant for posting on Instagram, Elizabeth also loves making memorable Christmas cards. The Daily Mirror called her 2015 creation “the sexiest Christmas card ever.”
So, the question had to be asked: how do you decide what image to use on your card every year?
I love putting together my Christmas cards and I make them as silly as possible. I’m usually wearing a bikini and we photo shop on polar bears or wolves or something. But, back to the beachwear. If you’re wondering how to style yourself for the summer in Marbella, and ways to make the most of your assets, then Elizabeth has a few handy hints for women of every age. Women of every age can wear a bikini, as long as they feel confident and have the right cover up handy. We have kaftans and sarongs to compliment every bikini and while they are light enough to be scrunched up in your bag, they can be whipped out and wrapped around. Some of our bikinis have padding and under wiring and give great support. I love one pieces too though and we have some really flattering ones.
What in your opinion is the signature style for the 2016 summer season?
Bright colours are very in right now but white never goes out of fashion. When I go on vacation I take a lot of white pieces as, once you’re tanned, they look terrific on everyone. It is undoubtedly true that the Elizabeth Hurley range has some stunning sarongs and cute kaftans that are stylish enough to take you from the sun lounger to the beachclub bar and, frankly, you wouldn’t look underdressed in a restaurant in her tops and tunics designs. At the moment you can purchase the ladies swimwear range and cover ups in El Corte Inglés, and the Girls collection at The Marbella Club. Her children’s collection plus her accessories are available from the Elizabeth Hurley online store.

Hopefully, we will see Elizabeth Hurley back holidaying in Marbella when her shooting schedule for “The Royals” permits. She may be Queen Helena on set, but in Marbella she’s the Queen of Summer, especially when we’re talking about bikinis and beachwear.

Sentenced to death: - The gang member who’s abused vulnerable girls. - The wealthy drunk driver who’s mown down a child. - The hate preacher calling for the murder of British soldiers. Pleasurekraft Tarantula (House) Believe it or not, this track is six years old and we have fallen in love with it all over again. Of course, one of the main reasons is that it sounds as fresh as ever and we can’t imagine it ever falling flat in the clubs. One of the greatest house tracks ever, in our humble opinion.
3
Jorja Smith - Blue Lights (RnB) A great smooth track from the UK singer - this girl is going places. We love this atmospheric track that offers a departure from the norm. This is R&B with its thinking hat firmly ON. Yeah Boy, Bravo - Feelings (Diligas Remix) (Experimental) Play this loud and with the bass way up. Such a cool track for the clubs - we just know that we will be playing this a lot. This is a great mood setter for a summer night out, when you just have to keep dancing and don’t want to go home until sunrise.
Drake - One Dance (Dancehall) Drake has been on fire recently and this is going to be the summer hit that will instantly get you moving. One Dance has a great beat and all the things that you would expect from a track by Drake. This will appeal to long-standing fans as well as the 24-hour party people that we like to see in Marbella!

marbellahealthstyle Kimberley Mills Bentley Fitness · Body · Lifestyle · Health · Soul · Style · Mind & the true Beauty of this little vibrant town Finally the sun has made an appearance and it feels as if it is hopefully here to stay! It’s great when the summer arrives and everyone has that holiday feeling. This month I’ve been checking out a lot of the new beach bars and chiringuitos along the Coast. As a family we always have our Sunday ‘fun day’ at a different beach each weekend, so it’s good to see that there is an endless list of amazing places to go.
LA SALA BY THE SEA
Of course, out of all the beach bars one of my favourites has to be La Sala by the Sea. The atmosphere is amazing and, depending on which day you choose to go, you can experience a mix of everything from a laid back vibe to full on party style. It has the atmosphere of a beautiful resort in Thailand with its stunning decor and a menu which is full of classic Thai dishes; a personal favourite is the Teriyaki Salmon. A day spent here is always top of the list and do check out La Sala’s website as they always have fantastic deals on throughout the year.
BIKINI TIME
As summer is just around the corner I have been on the lookout for some new beachwear and have my eye on the amazing bikinis from Virginia Macari. Having seen them I have decided that I want the whole collection. Up until now I have always found it hard to track down bikinis which look great but are still comfortable and practical for a day by the pool or on the beach. I particularly like the gorgeous lemon #LaSicilia bikini - it’s beautiful and would be great for a boat day or pool party.
BOOK MY SUN-BED
A brand new app has arrived on the Coast and I think it’s a great idea. Gone are the days of having to get up at six and claim a sunbed with your beach towel. Now you can book your bed online through the app and reserve it until you choose to arrive. It also gives users the chance to discover new places to go, which they might never have known about. Using the app you can scan through, see if there are sunbeds available then make a hassle free booking. Perfect! For more info have a look for Bookmysunbed at the Apple app store.

FINCA BESAYA
One of the most famous restaurants here in Marbella is Finca Besaya and it is most definitely one of my top places to go for a night out. The restaurant is situated just outside Marbella in a beautiful villa which has a real hippy vibe and is worlds away from the old Marbella stereotype, being full of vibrant colour and a Moroccan inspired decor with a large terrace, bar and beds. The restaurant has a stunning menu and after dark the terrace turns into a great place to dance the night away.
HEALTHY CHOICE
BARCELO SPA
I was treated by my lovely friend this month to a day at the gorgeous Barcelo Spa and had the most relaxing day. Sometimes being a mummy - as amazing as it is - can be full on, so it was lovely to have a few hours with my friend to chill and be pampered. They have a fantastic pool with massaging jets, a sauna, steam room and a long list of treatments to choose from.
OAK GARDEN AND GRILL I am very excited about the opening of La Sala’s brand new restaurant, OAK Garden and Grill. It’s starting to look fantastic and the menu is insane. Watch this space to find out more!
I’ve been trying to find new ways to make my food healthier, so I’ve trying to lower my intake of sugars and carbs this month. However, as a fan of pasta (spaghetti bolognese being one of my all time favourite dishes) I found it really hard to cut them out of my diet. However, I am delighted to have discovered courgettes. Just use the courgette as a substitute for the pasta and it tastes just as good. Shred it with a peeler into strips, quickly fry in olive oil for two to three minutes then serve in your choice of pasta sauce. It contains hardly any calories (around 36 per courgette, compared to a bowl of pasta, which could be in the hundreds) and, as it’s a vegetable, you are getting one of your five a day.
BUTTERFLY WORLD FUENGIROLA
FASHION SHOW
As it has been raining on and off for the past few weeks we have been taking the kiddies to some of the indoor activities in the area. One which my little ones absolutely loved was Butterfly World in Fuengirola. It’s contained in a little temple which opens out to a magical garden full of ponds with little bridges, stunning flowers and plants - and the most amazing butterflies from all over the world It really is a lovely place to take the kids for an afternoon.
LES CUBES
I’ve heard great things about this place and I’m planning a little trip here with the girls this month. The menu looks fantastic and the setting can’t be beaten. Even though it has only recently opened I have already heard great things about the tasting menu. Apparently the place is divided into two areas (or cubes): To Be Or Not To Be (drinks and lounge) and Kalinka Malinka and C’est La Vie (gastronomy). Anyway, it all sounds fabulous and we can’t wait to drop in for a visit – it’ll probably be a long one if I know my girls!
I always have a great time dressing up and playing around with fashion so was massively looking forward to attending a fashion show at La Sala. Intropia was showcasing its new line, which included beautiful daywear and the most fabulous evening dresses, perfect for some of the opening parties this year. It’s available in El Corte Inglés, so you can bet that I’ll be popping down to take a look and try a few bits on!

EVOLUTION OF
Dating
Dating these days is a technological rotating buffet that allows you to pick and choose and to keep trying all the buffet samples for as long as you want. The buffet even offers international cuisine, where you can try samples from all over the world. Then, if you find something you like, you can change from the buffet to al a carte and focus on one person.
W
e now live in a world of independence and finding a partner has become a search for someone that complements us and with whom we are entirely compatible. We no longer have to settle for someone that our family has chosen or because our perceived moment has come. Therefore taking time to get to know someone is particularly important and, with that, the evolution of dating has advanced enormously in the space of a decade.
30
With the escalating marriage age and declining marriage rate we are spending a greater length of time detached and independent. Dating has evolved from a situation where, a comparatively short time ago, a man would have to seek permission from the parents of the woman he fancied. More than likely they would date for a short time and their fate would be sealed, in this era when sex before marriage was considered improper, at best. In just a few decades dating has been revolutionalised. In
the 1960s, with the introduction of the contraceptive pill, a more liberal attitude developed. Until relatively recently couples dated with a view to developing a relationship. The 21st century, by contrast, favours ‘hook up culture’ where it is common to have frivolous fun with someone without it leading anywhere. The dating boundaries have changed and going out with someone doesn’t mean that there is any intention of forming a lasting relationship.
Then there’s the issue of dating etiquette, which no longer exists. All rules have been abandoned and there are different stages of dating, making it very confusing. The progression seems to follow a series of stages: from one-night stands, late night booty calls, casual hook ups, friends with benefits, brief encounters or flings - then maybe you graduate to the dating stage. However, dating can mean that you are also seeing other people at the same time, until you have an understanding that you are only seeing each other. If you do reach the stage of being an exclusive couple then you can finally say you have a partner. What is important is that you manage your own expectations and don’t compromise on what you are looking for in forming a relationship with someone else. There is no point in ‘hanging in there’ in the hope that maybe you can change someone, or that they will start treating you better after a certain period. The early stages of dating should be a fun and happy time and if it doesn’t meet your needs then move on to someone who will look after your emotional well-being. Dating services (technical apps) have increased the odds at meeting a compatible partner. If you walk into a bar, out of 50 potential people you could meet you may only end up talking to one, thereby losing the other 49 opportunities! With easy access to potential partners from the comfort of your bed, your odds are a lot better. When we are so consumed by trying to keep afloat in our daily lives it is an easy way to pass time and increases the likelihood of meeting someone. These applications and sites have also given the population an artificial confidence, as it is easier to face rejection online than in person. If you met someone through a website or app, then not responding to messages or just deleting them won’t deflate their confidence as much as being turned down in person. Tinder is more a game based on attraction, leading to feather brained conversations and possibly a meeting. With such a diverse population using Tinder, it makes meeting people you would not ordinarily have
encountered possible. There is even a new application called Luxy, being marketed as a high class Tinder for the ‘super wealthy and beautiful’ but it doesn’t quite meet expectations. The criteria for a man are a high net worth and a large pay packet; women need to look like models. However, anyone can falsely claim to have a net worth of over one million or a salary of 200 thousand per year. If (as is likely) there is no-one in your area, you will have to extend your geographical preference to surrounding countries and be taken on a pointless journey to Oman, Portugal and Morocco. People may deviate slightly from the truth with their income, but it extends further. A recent survey also found that approximately 81 per cent of people tell little white lies when trying to sell themselves online, about their age, profession, height, weight, status etc. Is it possible to meet someone in an old fashioned and traditional way anymore? In a transient place like the South of Spain it is much more difficult as there is a much smaller stable population. So, increasingly, people are moving out of their usual social networks to meet people. If you try these applications out, think of them as a lottery that you need to be in to win! Dating should be about forming a connection with someone, not a cold transaction. There comes a point where the buzz and exhilaration of meeting another date fades and having the same conversations over and over with different people seems more a chore than a pleasure. This process will eventually make you realise the importance and comfort of having a real relationship with someone who cares about you. To change from the revolving dating circle to one special person will require an altering of your patterns, mentality and a determined focus to commit. This can be difficult when we live in a world with unlimited choice and no boundaries.
“
TO CHANGE FROM THE REVOLVING DATING CIRCLE TO ONE SPECIAL PERSON WILL REQUIRE AN ALTERING OF YOUR PATTERNS, MENTALITY AND A DETERMINED FOCUS TO COMMIT
”
What is important, if you want to advance from dating to a relationship with someone, is mutual trust and communication. Without these basic principles a partnership cannot flourish. Always make sure that you are not compromising your own happiness and well-being.
If you are discontented and melancholy, talk about it with your date or partner then, if the situation doesn’t change, it’s time to move on. Self respect and happiness are paramount. If you value this for yourself then others will too. Talking through issues with a therapist, psychologist or counsellor can help you find sense in these matters, as once you find the right track for yourself things will fall into place. If you would like more information or to talk through any of these issues affecting your own relationship, individually or as a couple, you can contact the writer. Talking through relationship issues can help you come to the decision as to what is right for you and how to achieve it.

Assisted Reproduction Techniques HELP FULFILL DREAMS
Assisted reproduction is a subject currently much discussed, especially by those who are experiencing fertility problems. Increasingly there is major progress in the techniques that exist, increasing the success rate and enabling us to cover all possibilities presented to us. Dr. Luis Miguel Garcia Marin, expert in Assisted Human Reproduction at HC Fertility- El Centro de la Fertilidad Marbella- discusses some of the issues facing couples thinking of enlisting help.
What exactly is infertility and which are the most common issues? The definition of infertility varies depending on which culture, country or scientific body you happen to consult. For the purpose of clarity, we will be using those issued by the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF), who have two different concepts: Dr. Luis Miguel Garcia Marin Expert in Assisted Human Reproduction at HC Fertility
Currently, what percentage of couples have reproductive problems? Recent statistics estimate that the percentage of couples having trouble is around 15 per cent, meaning around 600,000-700.000 couples with either primary infertility, that is couples who never had children or secondary infertility, that is couples who already have at least one child but are unable to conceive again.
STERILITY: Not achieving a pregnancy after one year of regular intercourse. Primary Sterility: Never having had a pregnancy. Secondary Sterility: Already having had one or more children, but unable to conceive again. INFERTILITY: Inability to produce a live birth, that is experiencing repeated miscarriages.
The causes of infertility are multiple and complex, however in general we can say that the origin of the problem will conform to one of the following:
1 Only affects women
(in 30 per cent of cases)
* Fallopian tube obstruction. * Uterine abnormalities. * Ovarian disorders. * Endocrine disorders. * Genetic alterations. 2 Mixed etiology (causes) (in 20 per cent of cases)
* In these cases there are female and male factors. 3 Unknown causes 20 per cent * In these cases, all diagnostic tests performed provide normal results, however, the couple does not conceive. This percentage decreases gradually, as science reveals previously unknown causes and develops methods for diagnosing such disorders.
We offer to study and personalise treatments tailored for each couple, for each case, for each clinical and personal situation of the patient or partner 40
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
What techniques are used, their advantages and risks? The techniques used vary depending on the cause of infertility and very briefly are: Ovulation Induction: This is the simplest technique in cases of minor problems with ovulation. The risks are low but after six unsuccessful attempts should not be repeated. Artificial Insemination a) With partner’s sperm i. 20 per cent success rate. ii. Only useful in cases of mild abnormalities of semen and has few risks. To be cancelled if there is a risk of a possible multiple pregnancy. b) Donated semen i. 30-40 per cent success rate, if no other factor is associated. ii. Useful for men without sperm, or women who seek to be single mothers. iii. Also useful in preventing transmission of genetic diseases to offspring. In Vitro Fertilization With or without intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF-ICSI). This is the technique used most today, with a success rate of 40-45 per cent per attempt. a) Useful in cases of tubal blockage, ovulatory problems, serious alterations in the semen, failure with simpler techniques and in cases of infertility of unknown cause.
Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis PGD technique is complementary to IVF and used to identify the genetically healthy embryos by analyzing one of their cells, thereby employing only the suitable embryos. It is useful in cases of genetic diseases, previous repeated failures in achieving a pregnancy with IVF and infertility of unknown cause.
What is the most innovative technique? Perhaps the most innovative is preimplantation genetic diagnosis; today we know that at least half of the embryos have a chromosomal abnormality that prevents implantation in the womb and its subsequent evolution. Using this technique we make sure to use a chromosomally normal embryo, which increases the chance of pregnancy up to 50-60 per cent per attempt, which is a rate similar to egg donation.
How important are psychological factors, such as stress, in these treatments?
b) The risks are ovarian hyper stimulation (excessive development of follicles) or complications with the ovarian puncture for egg retrieval. Today these risks are very low.
It is very important that the couple understands perfectly the treatment procedure, its benefits and risks, which should result in less psychological stress.
Egg Donation
If they still manifest clear symptoms of anxiety, they should be referred to a
specialist in psychology to be counselled and helped throughout the process, making it a positive experience.
At HC Fertility, it is an important aspect for us throughout the process. There are myths about fertility. What are they and why are they false? Yes there are myths. For example, many women are unaware that fertility decreases very rapidly after the age of 35 and believe that, while they have menstrual periods, their fertility is preserved. Another myth is the belief that, with the new techniques of assisted reproduction, they will not have trouble conceiving. Unfortunately not all are successful in having a child, so they should not delay in seeking help after a year of failed attempts to conceive.
What is offered by HC Fertility? We offer to study and personalise treatments tailored for each couple, for each case, for each clinical and personal situation of the patient or partner. For this we have all the techniques described above and an experienced staff, with long professional histories in reproduction with the most innovative technology in assisted reproduction.
This technique is associated with a higher success rate, up to 60 per cent per attempt. Egg donation is useful in those cases where the patient has no eggs, for premature menopause, surgery or treatments that have affected the ovaries, advanced age of the patient (over 42 years), or in cases of genetic diseases to avoid transmission to offspring. This technique has very few risks as egg donors will have been questioned and tested for many diseases. It can be said that the risk of having a child with some sort of abnormality is smaller than is usual in a healthy couple from the general population.

ickboxing has been around for many years. It is taught as a great way to get fit, tone muscles, has a fantastic ‘feel good’ factor attached and let’s not forget the fact that it has a self-defence element. All these factors mean that kickboxing provides a great and satisfying workout in the gym. Although it is best known for being a competitive full contact sport, kickboxing can also be used as a fantastic way to lose those unwanted extra pounds. Power, speed and agility are all requirements and these attributes are all acquired through variable exercise routines. Various types of equipment are used to enhance training. These include large hanging punch bags for punching and kicking to maximize power. Smaller light weight pads for the hands are used to help activate those fast twitch muscle fibers for speed and agility when combining punches together.

LEAVING THE EURO
All hell broke loose in the salon and I actually thought we were going to come to blows. No, it wasn’t over misplaced hair tools, nor was it over a client. It was much more important than that – we were arguing about the Eurovision Song Contest. You see, the staff at Reflections are a mixed up bunch and we come from all over.

THE NEWS
Gerry thinks he is Italian (he is actually from Tooting in London!), Nader can get very passionate about Israel and don’t even mess with Cristina when it comes to Spain. As for me – well, I was traumatised by it all. Thank God I’d had a bottle of wine before watching it or I don’t know what I would have done. I have been a fan of the Eurovision Song Contest since I was six years old and can still remember the feeling of seeing Bucks Fizz for the first time and thinking that they were out of this world.
Since I started writing this column many of you have suggested that I should write a book about my life. Well, I don’t know about that but, believe me, you could easily fill a book with the day-to-day goings on in the salon. Here’s this month’s highlights.
A HAIR-RAISING STORY
Nader has finally decided to grow his hair. Hallelujah! This is a cause for celebration because there are only so many times you can be stopped in the street by the police because your shaved head makes you look like you might be connected to a terrorist cell. It was also quite common to see people cross the street to avoid Nader because they thought he was going to run off with their designer handbags. Now that he has grown his hair he seems to be channelling ‘80s boy band’, which is definitely preferable and less disruptive.
48
THIS MEANS WAR
Now that Gerry has his own column in Confeti Magazine he thinks he has finally arrived. As if he wasn’t bad enough before, his ego has now reached a new high – or should that be ‘low’? He had been behaving like a child and couldn’t stand the fact that I had a column in SOCIETY Magazine, so he stamped his feet till he got his own way. He is lucky that he is the best cutter I have ever met, as much as it pains me to say it.
THE BEAUTY BAROMETER
04 What the hell happened? Firstly, we had Justin Timberlake performing. Isn’t he American? I mean, shouldn’t the name give it away; EURO-vision. Who are we going to invite next year? Mars or, maybe, Jupiter? And since when have Russia and Australia been part of the EU? They seem to have let in anyone with an ‘ia’ at the end of their name. There must have been a hell of a lot of visas in that auditorium! Talking of the Aussies, did you see their judge? She looked like she had fallen into a drawer and come out wearing half of it. What was that about? I quite liked the Russian performance even though the pyrotechnics were a bit OTT. Health and Safety must have been praying he didn’t have a lot of hair lacquer on. As for the Spanish, why did they sing in English? Now, that was confusing, I was wondering by this point if I was watching the right programme and don’t even get me started on the winner! Ukraine was singing or should I say wailing about Stalin and genocide. Genocide? At Eurovision? After watching I have decided the UK should leave Europe as it obviously isn’t working anymore. Bring back Lulu is what I say!

While I am down on my knees in the confession box I might as well admit I have fallen in love with the 03.GHD Classic Curve, 179€. I know, I know - I am a bit behind the times on this one but, heigh ho, better late than never. They give natural, effortless beach waves for any age and the results are incredible, providing there is enough length.
SLEEPING BEAUTY
Another item just added to the ‘Jonathan Recommends’ list is 04.Germaine de Capuccini Sleeping Cure, €35,00 a detox night concentrate designed to put an end to the fatigued appearance that makes your skin look five years older. It works with maximum effectiveness during the 23:00 to 2:00 Golden Hours, when the cellular regeneration process reaches its highest point.

VALIDATED BY MOI
Every mother should have a bottle of 01.Redken One United Multi-Benefit Treatment €17,25 in her beach bag. Lightweight and deeply conditioning, the spray works to reduce dryness, resulting in smooth and nourished hair. This product will untangle your daughter’s long matted locks after a day on the beach and there won’t be a tear in sight. There is nothing quite like it on the market at the moment. I have been dragged kicking and screaming into Club 02.Olaplex. Yes, I will admit when I’m wrong and I was somewhat sceptical at first. I felt it was very gimmicky and made me think, “Hmm... Emperor’s New Clothes?” However (big sigh), having used it over the past six months I have been really impressed by its strengthening abilities. The boss, Mr B, will be popping the champers now I have finally got on-board.
01
I know that I always bang on and on to the staff about always reading the instructions before using any new products, but usually I do practise what I preach. However, I was feeling ridiculously tired/hangover on this particular evening and decided I knew better. I snapped open the top of the ampoule with my hand, of course not realising that the residual glass had now fallen into the cream, which I was now busily smearing across my face. This would have been bad enough on its own, but I managed to massage broken glass into my face TWICE before I realised my skin shouldn’t be feeling like it was on fire. I looked into the mirror to see that I was covered in blood, if I had told you that I had fallen facefirst off a motorbike going 100 kph you would have believed me. It was only then that I had a moment of clarity and realised that’s what the plastic doodah in the box was for. Hey, who needs one of those 200€ vampire facials when you can give yourself a Jonathan DIY version? After nearly scarring myself for life, I will say the Sleeping Cure is really amazing and I must remember to buy some more. Honestly, the amount of Germaine de Capuccini products I now have in my bathroom I should look about six. Actually, forget that - I should look like a bloody embryo! Ta-ra!

atalie Richardson, Adee Phelan and the team at Bardou live to make you more beautiful and, indeed, the brand new salon on Avda. Playas del Duque in Puerto Banús is a thing of beauty itself. The impressive exterior with its spacious terrace hints strongly at the delights you can expect to find through the glass doors of the salon’s double-fronted entrance.
The first impression of the interior is the sensation of space that the designers have maximised with the organisation of various treatment stations and relaxation areas in the main salon area. There are other ‘off-stage’ rooms for tanning and massages that are discreetly tucked away; in some cases behind the scenes for extra privacy and in the case of massages, to reduce distractions. The use of fashionable shabby-chic stripped and varnished floorboards in the main salon contrasts perfectly with the black and gold detailing throughout, including the fabulous Baroque-style mirrors that enhance the hair stylists’ stations. And there’s champagne. At Bardou, clients are offered a glass on arrival to ensure that their time in the salon is relaxing and the attentive, friendly staff instantly make you feel as though you’ve walked into a place where they have been excitedly waiting for your arrival. Hair styling is an art and, with celebrity hairdresser Adee Phelan at the helm of a team of three senior stylists, you can be confident that your hair will get the best cut and colour. The latest Olaplex treatment is available and Bardou’s impressive range of hair products is top notch and extremely popular. There are manicurists’ stations dotted here and there and, with part of Bardou’s promise being ‘Express Beauty’, it’s good to know that if you’re in a hurry you can enjoy a manicure or pedicure while having your hair done. Of course, you don’t have to rush your treats and there’s a lovely pedicure corner with a reclining chair where you can put your feet up and relax.

Make-up and facial treatments are another Bardou speciality and the dedicated, professional team uses only the best quality products. The Crystal Clear line will have you looking refreshed and younger; we recommend the Comcit facial that includes a Crystal Clear polish with derma roller to plump up the skin. Eyelash extensions are very ‘du jour’ and Bardou has an expert who can give you a lovely lash look. You can also have your eyebrows shaped, tinted or given the HD treatment. And, if you’re looking for permanent make-up then that is available for eyebrows, lips and eyeliner. In fact, you can also have a beauty mark – very Marilyn Monroe and Ariana Grande!
The up market line of make-up products used by the salon’s artists is the High Definition brand. This micro-fine make-up is a favourite with artists preparing actors and models for filming and photographic shoots. It creates a natural life-like radiance and will keep you looking picture perfect for hours on end, plus it is available for a range of skin types and skin tones. Bardou also has a number of special offers for wedding parties that will ensure everyone from the bride to her bridesmaids and family members look as good in the photos at the end of the day as they do at the beginning. Hen parties are also welcome and if you bring your girlfriends for a party in Banús, then Bardou is the perfect place to spend a few hours trying out wedding make-up ideas. From head to toe, Bardou is the place to go when you want to look perfect – book an appointment and discover the salon team’s expert knowledge that will create a whole new “Bardou’ you.
Every client leaves the salon looking and feeling a million dollars regardless of whether they came in for a manicure or a complete makeover.

So, SOCIETY was delighted to have the opportunity for a catch up with Virginia and discover more about the designer and the creative focus behind her collections that ignite confidence, femininity, and glamour in every women.
When did you decide to get into fashion design?
Quite some time ago! When I was a little girl my parents bought me a toy sewing machine and I did nothing but make dresses for my dolls all day. From

ON THE
I studied at Dublin’s Grafton Academy of Fashion Design and Tailoring for four years and won a lot of fashion awards during college that helped me achieve recognition in the field. I then got a job with one of the biggest designers of the time, Marc O’Neill and I also worked with Chanel and Dior, which gave me the best platform and experience that a designer could ever dream of. But, all I wanted to do was to start my own business, so I did in my twenties and it very quickly became a well-known brand in Ireland. In a short time I was making evening gowns for socialites and famous personalities -Victoria Beckham was a client and I made her some beautiful corsets and evening skirts.

What made you choose beachwear?
Exclusive Interview by Eleanor McKenzie
I am lucky to be able to say that I’ve traveled all around the world and I’ve been to some of the most beautiful tropical locations and beach clubs. I found that it was difficult to buy exactly what I wanted in beachwear so I started my own bikini label. I found the perfect niche in the market and I have never been so happy with what I do!
You come from a country with more rain than sun how have Irish women responded to your designs?
Irish girls go on holidays too! I have had an amazing reaction in Ireland. I’ve received a lot of press coverage

of my collection and I have been lucky to have many Irish celebrities wear my swimwear, such as former Miss World Rosanna Davison, model and singer Nadia Forde, model and TV presenter Vogue Williams. The beautiful TV presenter Glenda Gilsen and Georgia Salpa are also fans of my brand.
Who are your key style influencers? I’m a big fan of Melissa Odabash and Heidi Klein. I have been following these designers for years and now I am lucky to say that I am stocked along side them in many boutiques.
What is your design philosophy that underpins your collection?
My collections are designed with the fashion-forward jetsetter in mind and the contemporary chic that epitomises luxury travel. I want a Virginia Macari Beachwear Couture piece to be an essential for your holiday wardrobe. Plus, I only use luxury fabrics that last and a quality and craftsmanship that is second to none.
structure to your body. The best thing about swimwear is that if you’re not feeling confident about wearing a bikini you can accessorise it with a piece from the wonderful array of beach cover-ups and skirts and make yourself be the most glamorous babe on the beach!
You’re living in Marbella – the perfect location for Beachwear Couture –what are your favourite beaches/beach resorts?
We are so spoilt for choice. I love the sushi and ambience at Ocean Club, the calmness and cuisine of El Ancla and the boutique style and beauty of La Sala on the Beach. The list is endless. I love every part of Marbella. You will always find me either sipping a mojito in Nikki Beach or playing in the sand on one of our beautiful beaches with my little son Thor.
Where can Marbellis buy your swimwear line?
It will be stocked in many of the beach clubs all along the coast and you’ll find the list on my website. I will also be doing ‘pop up’ shops this summer - so stay tuned!
Where do you source your fabrics?
I source my fabrics in Italy. It’s one of the world’s best places for innovative fabric and they use the top technology to achieve that. I use the highest quality swimwear material that gives the best fit, great comfort and freedom of movement. This is very important to me as it’s what gives the brand that superior LUXE feel.
What in your opinion are the key beachwear trends this year?
I love the fact that girls are being more adventurous with cuts and colours. This year the full “swimsuit” is the must have swimwear for your holiday. It’s a great piece to invest in because it can take you from the beach to the bar. You can slip on a pair of jeans or a beach skirt over your swimsuit, add a pair of heels and you are ready for the evening!
What is going to be the No.1 colour for beachwear in summer 2016?
Neon colours are big this year but also nudes, which I love! It’s a very daring but classic colour that will suit everyone. A lot of celebrities are wearing the nude palette this year, my favourites being Rihanna and Kendall Jenner.
Which styles would you recommend for the body that is not exactly ‘bikini ready’? Stick with a classic cut that has soft boning on the sides and with moulded cups to give enhancement and

What plans do you have next for your collection?
I’m already working on the Summer 2017 collection because we are exhibiting at Miami Swim next year. It’s the biggest swimwear tradeshow in the world with over 3000 buyers. So this is a very exciting time for my swimwear brand.
What is the next dream you want to achieve?
By next year I want to be stocked in the major department stores around the world. We are already in talks with some, which is amazing. I have a super team around me and we are working extremely hard. Our aim is to have a global presence with distribution already in place in more than eighteen countries. Thank you Virginia, you’re an inspiration to women who have a burning ambition to achieve and Virginia Macari Beach Couture is undoubtedly the ‘new best friend’ of every woman who wants to look beautiful on the beach. Frontiers FASHION
Today we live in a planet with no borders, which is globalised and inclusive. What is fashion if not a reflection of culture, style and individuality? Let’s embrace the beauty of our cultural differences by adopting them into our lifestyle and the way we perceive the beauty of the world. Therefore, this production by Sisko Akt is a tribute to multiculturalism and cultural appreciation through fashion.

T
he richness of landscapes and nature in our world inspired our concept, where the contrasts of hot and cold, colourful and neutral, tropical greens and rocky whites result in a stellar culture shock. The growing fascination with other cultures and our willingness to embrace styles from other regions shows our acceptance and respect for other backgrounds, and our ability to have fun while honouring our differences. Multiculturalism is also present in our lives, since our parents came from opposite sides of the world: Finland, where the icy whites and peaceful blues of the Scandinavian winter predominate and Chile, where the South American climate favours a bright, extrovert colour palette. This unusual mix of opposite cultures and customs has manifested in our lives as a love for contrasts, for combining the unexpected and for expressing this movement in the form of art. What defines this unity of ethnic backgrounds is present in the world of fashion. The fact that designers have incorporated cultures outside their own into their designs has resulted in beautiful outfits that have a traditional aesthetic with a twist that doesn’t entirely eliminate its origins. Whether it’s European, South American, Asian or African, fashion will inspire you to look for inspiration outside your own culture.

LATIN RYTHM One of the most beautiful forms of ethnic fashion comes from South America, inspired by the tribal prints of Machu Picchu in Peru or the colour explosion in the streets and houses of Brazil. A sensual silhouette is a staple in South American fashion, from colourful figure-hugging dresses, to tribal printed, fringed ensembles revealing sun kissed bronzed legs.

95
TORQUE TALK
O
n 5th May 1976, the last of the 1,000 911 Turbo (Type 930) homologation road cars rolled off the production line in Zuffenhausen, completing Porsche’s obligation for the coveted FIA approval of their 934 and 935 race cars to contest the 1976 season in Groups 4 and 5. Fast-forward to mid-January 2016, and we are at the newly rejuvenated Kyalami (which means ‘My home’ in Zulu) Racing Circuit near Johannesburg, South Africa, testing the second generation (991) 911 Turbo. It is no coincidence that this launch coincides with the 40th Anniversary of Porsche’s seminal pin-up sports car. Abandoned as a fixture on the Formula One calendar in 1993, the bankrupt Kyalami track was acquired by Porsche South Africa on 24th July 2014, and has been treated to a multi-million Rand overhaul that took over a year to complete. We can see that the finishing touches are still being applied to the facility, but the brand new tarmac is smooth and grippy, and our brand new 991.2 Turbo S test cars are sitting in the pit lane, chomping at the bit.
“Supercar performance with a modest average fuel consumption of 9.1 L/100km has always been a 911 strong suit.
The longer wheelbase, wider tracks and multi-link rear suspension of the 991 generation transformed the handling and stability of the 911 genre to the point where it now plays second fiddle to no rival of any engine layout and chassis configuration. And as we found out recently, its excellence has only been further enhanced by the minor tweaks performed on the second generation Carrera. Some of these tweaks have been carried over to the face-lifted Turbo, which of course benefits from the standard fit rear wheel steering introduced with the 991 Turbo in 2014. On both road and track, the extra 20hp only manifests itself at the top end, but the extra 50 Nm of torque makes a big difference throughout the power band, blasting the revised Turbo and S out of bends with even fiercer determination than before. If this fireworks display was to be expected, what impressed most was the way the car turns in and stays bolted to the tarmac at the sort of speeds you would have to be totally suicidal to attempt on a public road. And if you suffer from talent bypass, as the driver of the car in front of me clearly did when he turned into Kyalami’s high-speed left right sequence too early and then lifted off, the combination of well-sorted chassis

and PSM safety net will come to the rescue. In the same situation, an early 911 Turbo would simply have penned his epitaph with its legendary Darwinian flourish. According to August Achleitner, VP of the 911 Product Line, the objectives for the development of the second generation 991 Turbo were to improve its performance, efficiency and everyday usability. The result is an extra 20hp for both Turbo and Turbo S, accompanied by six percent better fuel economy, lower emissions, and improved driveability.
overtaken by a new Turbo, the three dimensional rear light clusters, and vertically disposed bars on the engine lid vents are giveaways as it disappears into the distance. Most people would assume that the Turbo makes up a very small percentage of 911s sold. In reality however, it has accounted for an astonishing 25-percent of sales over the last two years, underlining the draw of the nonGT flagship model and the wealth of Porsche’s customer base.
The base Turbo now has 540hp at 6,400rpm, with 660Nm of torque between 1,950 and 5,000rpm, while the Turbo S boasts 580hp at 6,750rpm, with 700Nm between 2,100 and 4250rpm. The 20 sec overboost facility gives the Turbo 710Nm of torque from 2,250 to 4,000rpm, while the Turbo S benefits from 750Nm between 2,250 and 4,000rpm. Rev limits are set at 7,000 and 7,200rpm respectively.
Put the old and new versions on the scales and you will not find much change. At 1,595kg, the Turbo is 5.0kg lighter than before, while the 1,600kg S measures 5.0kg more. This weight increase is due to the standard fit PDCC (Porsche Chassis Dynamic Control) on the S model, whose hardware offsets the weight savings elsewhere such as the PCCB brake system and LED headlamps.
Against the stopwatch, the Turbo now blasts to 100km/h in a claimed 3.0 sec, and tops out at 320km/h, while the S version boasts a spectacular 2.9 sec 0-100km time, with a 330km/h top speed. Supercar performance with a modest average fuel consumption of 9.1 L/100km has always been a 911 strong suit.
In the cabin, the interior benefits from the 360mm sports steering wheel design that debuted on the 918 Spyder. It also now features the same dashboard and console updates as the latest Carrera, along with the latest PCM4 infotainment system.
The styling of the nose, tail and door handles has been sharpened up in line with the revisions made to the Carrera range. Certainly, if you have just been
For those who wish to use the console mounted gear lever as well as the paddle shifters, the good news is that the Turbo has now adopted the proper, more intuitive racecar style sequential shift pattern for its seven-speed PDK gearbox,
as on the GT3 RS. This means that you now push the lever forwards to select a lower gear and vice versa. The Sport Chrono Package also brings the four-position performance control introduced on the Carrera, featuring Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual settings, and a Sport Response button in the middle for 20 sec of maximum torque on over-boost. “Our objective was to improve efficiency, power, economy and emissions on this EU6 spec engine,” explained Marco Marques, Manager, Development Boxer Engines, as he detailed the changes to the upgraded 9A1 bi-turbo engine. “On the intake side, the charge air intercoolers are unchanged, but the intake manifold tracts have been improved, and the cylinder-heads now feature reshaped inlet ports and new intake valves. Together, these changes increase airflow by four percent, creating more tumble in the combustion chambers for more efficient combustion.” In conjunction with the revised combustion chambers, the direct fuel injection pressure was increased from 140 to 200psi, and the injector spray pattern trimmed to work optimally with the higher pressure. Unlike on the Carrera, which runs a temporary higher pressure during the warm-up cycle, the injection pressure of the Turbo remains constant.
97
TORQUE TALK
The Mahle pistons are unchanged, but the exhaust valves are now made from an improved high temperature material. “This is not because of higher combustion temperatures per se, but because the improved gas flow characteristics create more localised heat through friction from the greater number of gas molecules passing the exhaust valves each second,” said Marco. The VTG turbochargers are the same for the Turbo, but on the Turbo S the compressor wheels are now 2.0mm larger in diameter at 58mm, within modified housings. The turbine wheel size is unchanged at 50mm, but their material has been upgraded. The Turbo and Turbo S have maximum boost pressures of 1.0 bar and 1.2 bar respectively, with an extra 0.15 bar overboost facility on full throttle between 2,500 and 4,500rpm. A new Dynamic Boost function minimises turbo lag by opening the throttle valve on the over-run. This ensures that you will have boost when you come back on throttle to exit a bend. “This is the last use of the 9A1 motor,” said Marco. “When we conceived the 9A2 engine we planned a modular
98
system that would allow a change of barrels and pistons to allow 3.8 litres for the next generation Turbo. With a fuel injection nozzle in the centre of each combustion chamber the new head design is also intrinsically better.” The question of soundtrack always comes up with sportscars, and turbochargers dampen the exhaust note to a large extent. “While we were able to play with the sound of the new Carrera bi-turbo, the 3.8 litre 9A1 engine is so efficient, there is little exhaust gas energy left after the turbochargers to play with the sound. This is why we do not offer a ‘sport’ exhaust for the Turbo,” he said. The stainless steel exhaust system is unchanged. Apart from improved fuel economy and lower emissions, the improved efficiency also benefits response and torque at low engine speeds. “You can drive one gear higher at the same speed now, which meant that we then had to address the issue of vibration at low crank speeds in higher gears,” Marco explained. “The new flywheel features centrifugal weights to dampen secondary vibrations, a design also used on the new Carrera’s 9A2 3.0-litre bi-turbo motor.”
TORQUE TALK
While the extra 20hp that give 580hp to the Turbo S and 540hp to the entrylevel Turbo are modest improvements on paper, you have to remember that unlike naturally-aspirated engines, the twin-turbo flat-six will continue to deliver its rated power 1,700m above sea level, where Kyalami is situated. The ECU is the same the Conti-Siemens SDI21 unit used on the new Carrera, with its fuel, ignition, boost and other mapping parameters optimised to the revised engine hardware. On track it was quickly apparent that the handling and poise of the new Turbo have been ratcheted up a notch from the already impressive outgoing model. Ulrich Morbitzer, Director of Chassis Engineering for the 911, explained that while the suspension hardware is unchanged, several of the settings have been recalibrated, particularly the PASM damping whose performance envelope has been extended at both ends of its operating spectrum. This means that comfort in normal road driving is now better at one extreme, while track performance has been enhanced at the other. The former was certainly apparent on the drive from the hotel to Kyalami, the previous model’s edge over some surfaces now nicely rounded off.
In terms of suspension geometry the kinematics have been altered with reduced toe-out at the front wheels. In combination with the rear wheel steering, this delivers more direct steering with more consistent handling under suspension compression. At the same time the steering rack was repositioned a few millimetres lower in the front sub-frame to improve geometry under load. If the tyres contribute significantly to handling consistency, so does the clutch material used in the front differential of the 4WD system. “The change in clutch material for the front differential was due to a discovery made by accident during a magazine test in very cold weather,” Ulrich explained. “When the car was left outside in subzero temperatures and then called upon to perform a handling test from cold before the front differential clutch material had reached operating temperature, it did not work properly as the material had contracted out of spec,” he explained. “The new material is dimensionally stable under thermal extremes so its performance
and the cars handling is much more consistent.” On track the chassis and aero upgrades make a noticeable difference. The amount of speed you can carry into a bend is quite remarkable for a car whose weight bias is so far aft. Turn-in is even more precise than before, and the improved front-end bite and balance going into, through and out of a bend is impressive, especially if you trail brake on the way in to shift weight to the McPherson strut front end. As with all 911s, the weight of the engine over the rear wheels makes traction on the way out unmatched and unassailable. The revised differentials seamlessly apply the right amount of torque to the right wheels to drag the car through and out of a bend, and are pure testimony to the level of understanding the Porsche engineers have of vehicle dynamics. The final piece of the puzzle is the revised active aerodynamics. When the spoilers are in their performance position with the front and rear spoilers extended, the downforce created
“While we were able to play with the sound of the new Carrera bi-turbo, the 3.8 litre 9A1 engine is so efficient, there is little exhaust gas energy left after the turbochargers to play with the sound. ”

TORQUE TALK
is in the range of the GT3s. The spoilers activate automatically over 80km/h and can produce maximum downforce over 120km/h if manually activated. As subtle as the slight power and torque increases, chassis tweaks and improved aerodynamic addenda might seem on paper, their effect on the cars ability to cover ground with significantly greater authority cannot be understated. When the stopwatch recorded a sensational 9.0 second improvement in the Nürburgring lap time of the outgoing Turbo S, even Porsche’s engineers were stunned. The 7 min 18 sec lap time set by the new Turbo S matches that of the 997 GT2 RS, a car with a fearsome reputation for sheer speed, the way it is delivered and the driver skill required to eke out every last bit of its performance. Significantly, while the GT2 RS comes shod with sticky Michelin Cup track day rubber, the Turbo S wears the new Pirelli PZero N1 road tyres developed in conjunction with Porsche to make the most of the cars chassis potential. These new tyres are sized 245/35ZR20 and 305/30ZR20 on 9.0J and 11.5J x 20-inch alloy wheels, and sit under the widest wheel arches of the 991 body styles.
“On track the chassis and aero upgrades make a noticeable difference. The amount of speed you can carry into a bend is quite remarkable for a car whose weight bias is so far aft.” “The dry handling and grip of the new Pirelli tyres is not far off the old Michelin Cup tyres,” Ulrich explained. “However, we are considering offering the latest Cup tyres as an option for customers who do track days. While the Pirellis may initially be close in performance they are still a street tyre, their performance drops off with heat build-up after a few fast laps of a race track, whereas a purpose built Cup tyre is designed to maintain its edge when worked hard on track.” In the final analysis, the fact that the much more user friendly 991.2 Turbo S can match the lap time of its Weissach-bred cousin on stock street tyres is a testament to how far Porsche’s mainstream sports cars and tyre technology have moved on in just five years. On the practical side, you can specify a front lift kit, which increases ground clearance by 40mm under the front spoiler lip, and 30mm over the front axle when activated.
And should the worst happen, an important safety innovation is the Post Collision Brake system. This applies the brakes automatically to mitigate the severity of a subsequent impact if the car continues moving after an initial collision. The most impressive thing is just how rounded and accomplished the new 991.2 Turbo S is across its broad palette of talents. Ulrich Morbitzer summed it up beautifully by describing it as an “Overall piece of art.” It is certainly a master class in how to engineer a super sports car. “If you build a car for over 50 years you accumulate the experience to make continuous improvements,” Ulrich explained. “If you can’t perfect one aspect of the car this time you simply do it next time round. But if you keep changing models every few years you start from zero each time, and can’t use all the ideas and experience you have gained. Continuous development is definitely our advantage.”

T
he Spanish Inquisition has had a bad press. This is largely due to the efforts of mainly nineteenth century Protestant historians to blacken Roman Catholicism and the Papacy, with their efforts being bolstered by prurient fictional contributions ranging from Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Pit and the Pendulum” to the Marvel Comics series, with Magneto appearing as a Grand Inquisitor! That is not to say that a more realistic picture was painted by the Monty Python team with their sketch in which the Inquisition’s instruments of torture included soft cushions and a comfy chair! According to actual records recently released, the total number of heretics put to death comprised 0.1% of about 40,000 cases tried. There are records of the Inquisition saving heretics from the secular authorities, and it was the Inquisition which first denounced as delusional Europe’s hunt for witches, and prohibited anybody being tried or punished for witchcraft. In its day the Spanish Inquisition may be regarded as the best run and most humane court in Europe. It may come as a shock to realise that Thomas Madden, an American historian, and Professor of History at Saint Louis University, Missouri, is able to write: “The Inquisition was not born out of a desire to crush diversity or oppress people; it was rather an attempt to stop unjust executions”.
“
However, the anti-Jewish fever which swept through Europe in the high Middle Ages did not spare Spain, and sporadic persecution in, for example, 1391, led to the deaths of 250 in Barcelona alone. As a result some 200,000 Jews converted to Christianity, becoming known in Hebrew as “Anūsim” (“those who are compelled to hide their religion”), or in Spanish “conversos”. Freed from their religious shackles, many of these rose to great prominence, including Gabriel Sanchez, who financed the voyage of Cristóbal Colon. Some, however, continued to practise their old religion in secret, giving rise to a general belief that they would always “attempt in various ways to seduce faithful Christians from our Holy Catholic Faith”. (Interestingly, in 1815 St Peter the Aleut was captured by Spanish soldiers in California as he tried to convert the natives to Russian Orthodoxy, and was martyred at the behest of the local Franciscan friars acting as Inquisitors.)
towards those Muslims who had also converted to avoid persecution, the Moriscos. Technically, by 1526 all Muslims had been converted. But the coasts of Spain were regularly attacked by Barbary corsairs, backed by the Ottoman Empire, and the Moriscos were generally suspected of aiding and abetting them. In 1568 the Moriscos in Granada rose in revolt, and were harshly suppressed. Between 1560 and 1571 82% of the cases dealt with by the Inquisition were Moriscos rather than Conversos. Finally, by 1609, with all Moriscos technically expelled from Spain, the number of cases dropped to 9%. In 1562 the first Protestant trials took place, aimed at “Lutherans”. About 100 executions resulted. This was a relatively small number, but it was sufficient to nip Spanish Protestantism in the bud, just as they were intended to do. In the last decades of the 16th century some 200 Spaniards were accused of Protestanism, although as one historian has remarked “Most of them were in no sense Protestants…irreligious sentiments, drunken mockery, anticlerical expressions, were all captiously classified by the Inquisitors…as “Lutheran””.
The total number of heretics put to death comprised 0.1% of about 40,000 cases tried. There are records of the Inquisition saving heretics from the secular authorities, and it was the Inquisition which first denounced as delusional Europe’s hunt for witches, and prohibited anybody being tried or punished for witchcraft.
Pope Sixtus IV (1471-1484), the builder of the Sistine Chapel, corroborates this: “…Many true and faithful Christians, because of the testimony of enemies, rivals, slaves and other low people…without tests of any kind, have been locked up in secular prisons, tortured and condemned like relapsed heretics, deprived of their goods and properties, and given over to the secular arm to be executed…” But “many true and faithful Christians” did not cover the Jews and Muslims who had technically converted to the Christian faith. These began to form a problem following the Reconquista of Spain by the Catholic Monarchs Fernando and Isabel. There was a long tradition in Spain of tolerance towards the Jews. Castile even had an unofficial Chief Rabbi, and Fernando’s father Juan II had a Jewish court astronomer.
In order to control this phenomenon, and to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms, in 1478 Fernando and Isabel obtained from the Pope a bull establishing the Inquisition. It was not definitively abolished until 1834 under the second Isabel. As a further safeguard, in 1492 the “Alhambra Decree” was published which formally expelled all Jews from Spain. Those Jews suspected of continuing to practise their faith in secret were seized by the agents of the Inquisition. (The Decree was not formally rescinded until 1968. On October 1st, 2015, the “Sephardic Ancestry Law” came into effect, with King Felipe saying “I want to tell you that you’re back home…”) The most intense period of Inquisitorial activity amongst the Conversos lasted until 1530, although the last trial of a crypto-Jew, Manuel Santiago Vivar, took place in Córdoba in 1818. The attention of the Inquisitors was increasingly drawn
”
It is estimated that only a dozen were burned alive. With few Conversos, Moriscos or Protestants to occupy its time, the Inquisition turned its attention to what were considered moral lapses. The first gay was burned in Valencia in 1572, but although Freemasonry was regarded as an equally grave offence, there are no records of a death sentence here. It was left to the Francoists to do this. But whilst the death penalty was infrequent, months, or even years, could pass before a case came to trial, and prisoners were kept in complete isolation, although there is evidence to suggest that the gaols of the Inquisition were superior to those of the secular authorities. The property of the prisoner was, however, used to pay for all expenses incurred. As a Converso wrote to Carlos I: “…if they do not burn, they do not eat”. And torture? It was not permitted to last more than fifteen minutes, and was used only in some 2% of all cases, and with far greater care than in other courts.

THE MODERN APPROACH TO surveillance
Conflict Marbella is the new dedicated consultancy service in the region from Conflict International who, from their head office in London, specialise in providing bespoke intelligence, investigation, security and risk advice services to clients worldwide.
T
he company is particularly adept in the area of surveillance where the London office can deploy locally licensed and reliable operators to carry out the monitoring of someone’s movements in most jurisdictions throughout the world.
The surveillance team leader can provide regular updates from the location and provide images via email or through more secure means.
Mike LaCorte, director of Conflict Marbella, says it is the most direct way to find out what is really going on. “We use surveillance to build up a pattern of someone’s lifestyle,” he said. “We obviously have a brief from the client and an objective to stick to, and we deploy a surveillance team to monitor that person throughout their daily routines and uncover information.” “For example, who they are associated with, third parties they meet, locations they visit, and in certain circumstances uncovering assets. We compile that all into a report that is ready to be produced as evidence in court or for private use.”
Exploding the myth The image of the private investigator, possibly in a raincoat, hanging around doorways and following at a safe distance has persisted for many years. However, the advances in technology means that methods of surveillance carried out by reputable companies are now far more sophisticated. “Gone are the days when you would have a man and a camera running behind a subject,” Mike adds. “We don’t operate like that, especially in busy urban locations, so we build the composition of a team with different skill sets to track the movements and gain the evidence needed. We could have access to taxis, chauffeur-driven cars, covert foot personnel as well as other mobile vehicles.”
“During the brief, we need to understand who the subject is and their particular lifestyle in order to adapt and use a surveillance team in accordance with that.” “If, for example, we have a subject who is over in the UK on holiday, staying in a five-star hotel with drivers and security, our surveillance team will adopt certain roles in order to uncover information about that person.” New technology also allows the client to be continually updated of progress in the investigation. The surveillance team leader can provide regular updates from the location and provide images via email or through more secure means.
Surveillance in reverse Tracking the movements of a subject is particularly useful if you believe someone else is monitoring you. Conflict Marbella has considerable experience in Counter Surveillance where an individual or company

believes they are under investigation. It could also relate to someone who may suspect they may be the subject of media intrusion. Mike LaCorte says their tried and trusted techniques can work both ways. “Very often we find that reversing our anti surveillance operations, where we make the hostile surveillance the subject of our own investigations, is a highly effective tool. We can then liaise with the client and offer advice as to the best way forward in order to protect their safety and security.” For businesses or individuals, there are a number of professional strategies that can be employed including technical surveillance counter measures. This is an area where knowledge of emerging technologies is key. “We have extensive experience in the various types of monitoring devices available. Our detectives examine all furniture, electrical and computer wiring, plugs, sockets, heating and

t’s the same every year. First Spring comes along to wake us from our social hibernation, then comes Summer and its warm air, sound of cicadas and barbecue smells which are all enough to blow the winter cobwebs away. You venture outside, bleary eyed, squinting in the morning sun and then that same old thought comes into your head: “It might just be warm enough to wear shorts today!” As you sit down to enjoy a morning coffee and look around you realise that the outdoor areas have, perhaps, been a little neglected over the winter months and quite rightly too; nobody wants to spend time sweeping only to find that every leaf from the neighbourhood had magically managed to find its way back onto the terrace while your back was turned.

So how do you begin to tidy up this postapocalyptic mess (and how did the rusty car parts get there?) Most of us start by throwing out the old to make way for the new, but one way to address this area is by treating it like any other area of your house. In the warmer months it is often said that you gain extra rooms because you are much more able to use your exterior spaces. Sure, a little more thought is required as this particular area is exposed to the elements, but you can dress it just the same.

Start with decoration: tired of your current exterior area? Why not liven it up with a painted feature wall. You can choose a colour that will be the scheme’s accent shade and carefully select an area to paint. You can then add to the scheme by choosing exterior cushions or votive candles in the same or a complementary accent colour. This is a particularly good move for those working with a small budget. Exterior fabrics also come in a huge range of colours and designs, so why not get those tired looking cushions recovered? Now choose a concept: are you going for boho-chic, glamorous and modern, hipster-cool, Scandinavian meets Provençal? You get the idea. Start by gathering images of scenes you like then adopt ideas from them. Sometimes it takes finding that specific picture as inspiration to make you realise that you need more of a certain colour or texture to tie the scheme together. If you don’t know what you want exactly, start by flicking through interior design magazines and cut out whichever images you are drawn to, no matter how arbitrary they may seem. If a picture of flowers jumps out at you it could be that one of those flowers ends up being your perfect accent colour.

Be practical: if you have a two by four metre terrace do not opt for a massive terrace set with chaise longue. It sounds a bit obvious but it can be very hard to keep the size of the space in mind when shopping for items. Make a scale plan so that you don’t

end up making bad purchases - this will also save you trips to the shops during what will become a very busy spot as the season kicks in. Don’t be TOO practical: it’s very easy to end up with items which serve a functional purpose but aren’t always aesthetically pleasing. Exterior furniture in the past has been incredibly utilitarian in its appearance but, in recent years, many designers have been creating some really beautiful items, from one extreme of the budget scale to the other. You don’t have to go high-end
to find items that you will adore looking at as much as using. It’s also a great area in which to have fun - if you have a garden why not create a secret area using plants and small structures? Plants: these transform any space. If you have an exterior area that doesn’t have huge amounts of direct sunlight you can always opt for good quality faux plants. This is also a convenient option if you are away for long periods of time as they do not require maintenance.

LIGHTING, LIGHTING, LIGHTING! This part is crucial, yet often overlooked. Most houses or apartments have exterior light points in the obvious places so that you can light up the terrace and garden area at the flick of a switch. But imagine if you could change the entire feel of a space just by painting it with light? Consider the lighting scheme very carefully and think about different types of lighting. Make sure you have the basic terrace lights sorted of course, but add to them by highlighting architectural plants or a pathway, giving your exterior space depth and intrigue. Fairy lights never look wrong but place them at night when they are on so you can see exactly what the effect will be and try to go for a warm bulb, as they help to create an inviting space. Svetlana Dimitrova and Alexander Sukhotin live and breathe luxury when it comes to sun protection systems from blinds to curtains. The partners have recently opened a stunning new showroom just off San Pedro boulevard where you’ll find the ultimate in top quality brands to give you windows of distinction.
vetlana and Alexander are no newcomers to this business and before opening in Spain they have for many years provided their expertise to owners of private residences, 5* hotels, theatres, hospitals and can list governments amongst their client list. They are passionate about delivering a bespoke service to each client, whether the order is for 300€ or in excess of 3000€ and insist on taking time to understand each client’s needs as well as personally measuring every window – there is no such thing as a curtain track that is simply ‘standard’ at Arte del Lusso—and this is the unique proposition that they are offering to Spain where as they point out, the sun shines very brightly and sometimes you need to block it out.
is also technically advanced and as Alexander demonstrated, the products from both these brands can be integrated into home automation systems, popularly called domotics, while others are easy to control using battery power. The San Pedro showroom is designed to show off the capabilities of every type of blind and curtain design and display different styles of window tracking, and at Arte del Lusso they can do straight or curved and from a small kitchen window to a grand opera house stage curtain.
One of the keys to the Arte del Lusso business philosophy and success is the partnership they have with the world’s leading brands. Diligent research and attendance at trade fairs has resulted in the business developing firm relationships with Switzerland’s Silent Gliss and Italy’s Mottura, both of which are considered to be the crème de la crème in window decoration systems. Svetlana and Alexander are keen to point out that all the brands they work with only have factories in their home countries and that no Far East industrial complexes are ever involved in manufacturing the products they stock.
The showroom is filled with beautiful fabrics with Creation Baumann occupying pride of place. This leader in curtain fabrics has been in the market since 1886 and it remains an independent, family-run business with a superlative ability to create exclusive fabric designs. This summer the trend in window styling is towards simple block colours including orange, beige and muted aquamarines and greens in natural fabrics such as silk and linen. Eclectic prints based on heritage designs featuring flowers or animals are also very much on trend.

I just can’t get you out

T
he The new Yorkshire Linen store on Marbella’s Golden Mile is a veritable treasure chest of everything for the bedroom, bathroom, living room and even the kitchen. This new venture on the part of Stephanie Smith with her business partner Julie Law and team is bringing the best in bedding and prestige household products to Marbella and its western areas to expand on the company’s long-standing success in Mijas. And what a revelation this store is if you’re not familiar with what it has to offer. The beautifully styled showroom highlights a wide range of top end brands including the highly desirable Kylie Minogue’s bed linen collection that sparkles just as much as the tiny songstress does herself. With beds made up in the latest designs surrounded by matching accessories from cushions to throws, and including bedside tables, lamps, candles and photos it feels as if one has walked into a series of bedrooms so beautiful that it’s difficult to know where to start. It’s no wonder that so many of the coast’s top interior designers, concierge services and real estate companies flock here when they are furnishing a residence, plus they can register as a trade customer and receive a client card.

The Kylie at Home bed linen collection is sure to give your bedroom star status Lovers of floral prints and strikingly colourful patterns will find something to catch the eye in the Made With Love brand, while the Fox & Brooke range offers everything from the more traditional floral designs, such as Wild Poppies designed by Catherine Lansfield, a designer who is a firm favourite with the team at Yorkshire Linen. Or, you could add some Eastern spice to your bedroom with the Marinelli duvet set from Dreams & Drapes. The Art by Rapport collection is also extremely attractive and its fresh florals are sure to bring a touch of Spring and Summer into your home. YOU TOO CAN BE SO LUCKY! The Kylie at Home bed linen collection is sure to give your bedroom star status and the glamour of her Eloise and Petra lines amongst others are a sophisticated take on rock n’ roll glitter to create a room that truly sparkles. Certainly the ladies at Yorkshire Linen have gone to great lengths to style two beds in Kylie’s designs that draw you to them, and as Stephanie and her team pointed out, if you want a bedhead studded with Swarovski crystals to complement your Kylie duvet cover, sheets, pillowshams and throws, then they can have that made for you.
THREAD COUNT? With the hot days of summer coming its time to cast off the high tog duvets and switch to some cooling cotton, and as fans of Egyptian cotton sheets know, the higher the thread count the better the quality of the sheet and your sleep, and at Yorkshire Linen they have 1000 thread count sheets. CUSHIONS GALORE! And everywhere there are cushions in every conceivable size, shape, colour and pattern. Square cushions, small oblongs and circular cushions to accessorise the bed or living room. Although the majority of cushions do match the bedroom ranges, there are others that would look fabulous on patio
furniture, or adding some colour to your living room. There are too many to describe here, but when you visit Yorkshire Linen, you’ll understand just how extensive the collection of cushions is. MATTRESSES AND MORE But, Yorkshire Linens is not just about bed linen, you can order mattresses of every form and dimension, plus there is an excellent stock of mattress toppers, from ones made of memory foam to a range of the more standard style toppers and mattress protectors. Duvets of every type are stacked row on row; from Hungarian goose down that will keep you snug in the colder months to the lightweight duvets that are perfect for southern Spain’s warmer months before the temperatures really rise. Towels are another speciality here and in addition to the softest, classic white towels in all sizes from bath sheets to hand towels, there is a rainbow range of hues to match any colour scheme. The towels’ top quality makes this shop one of the best choices for restocking your personal bathroom, or a holiday rental property. And, it must be said that the prices are very competitive, something that can be claimed for everything at Yorkshire Linen. You’ll also find curtains and shower curtains and a range of curtain ties. Many of these match the bed linen designs to create a totally co-ordinated room. Then there are super comfy bathrobes, sofa throws as well as the bed throws, and lots of little accessories dotted around the store that add the finishing touches to your décor, or make perfect gifts. And, talking of gifts, they stock a very fine collection of greetings cards to accompany them. But, it doesn’t end there; Yorkshire Linen also stocks a number of kitchen equipment items: kettles and toasters from Morphy Richards and George Foreman grills in various sizes. With so much to offer, Yorkshire Linen on the Golden Mile promises to be the
place that everyone heads for when they’re redecorating the home. You can find it in the La Carolina commercial centre where Stephanie and her staff will welcome you with warmth and their expert knowledge of the world of bedding – if Kylie visits, she’s bound to sing “I just can’t get you out of my head,” or maybe she’ll change it to “bed!” Urbanización Carolina Park, Golden Mile, Marbella. A JOURNEY OF FLAVOURS Les Cubes is an extraordinary find. Located at the Urb. Oasis Club on Marbella’s Golden Mile, this beautifully revamped space offers a novel concept in drinking and dining where you can enjoy a majestic view of the Med while exploring the exceptional menu prepared by executive chef Tim van Buchem, who some may remember from his days at Healthouse Las Dunas and Finca Cortesin. It’s a culinary pedigree that he is taking to new heights at Les Cubes. The carefully considered entrance allows the diner to take in at a glance the three spaces that Les Cubes offers: the To Be or Not To Be bar area where one can sharpen the appetite with a pre-prandial drink, relax after with a digestif, or meet friends for a few beverages and a chat; the Kalinka Malinka restaurant where chef van Buchem showcases contemporary Mediterranean dishes, and the more formal C’est La Vie which offers gourmet dining with an Asian twist. They are all open from 1pm to 2am, which gives you the possibility of lunching at Kalinka Malinka, dining at
140
C’est La Vie and having a nightcap in To Be or Not To Be. On our visit, the Society team was warmly welcomed by restaurant manager Juan and ushered to a table with a view of the pool and the sea. The tableware set the scene for what was to come; who could doubt that when plates by Christian Lacroix are matched with cutlery from Villeroy and Boch that the food is going to be of an equally high standard. Once we had admired the place settings and the overall look of the restaurant that blends contemporary design with furniture that is both smart and comfortable, we turned our attention to reading through the menu and our appetites increased with each turn of the page. An appetizer of Ceviche of Butter Fish with Pink Grapefruit and Spicy Vinaigrette had a thrilling tang of chilli to create a delicate explosion in the mouth that got us off to a great start and increased our anticipation of what was yet to come. Next up was a Cauliflower Veloute with Orange, Pistachio and Prawns. We were slightly puzzled by
the combination, but after a couple of mouthfuls we were total converts. The delicate cauliflower cream was set alight by the prawns topped with tiny slivers of Chinese oranges that took the dish to another dimension. But this was not the end, the Sauteed Scallops with Pea Puree, Crispy Ham and Lobster Bisque were a treat for scallop lovers and this reviewer just happens to be one of that merry band. Alongside it came a visually exciting dish of Pickled Mackerel with Beetroot Puree and Vegetable Salad. The freshness of the mackerel and its distinctive flavour was a perfect marriage with the beetroot to create a plate of exquisite refinement using a humble fish that is all too often ignored by fine dining. By now we were almost impatient to taste the main courses. Could they possibly be better than these amazing starters? The answer is, of course, yes. Or at least we can say that the second act was every bit as good as the first! We started with an unusual combination of Chicken with Quinoa, Turnip, Daikon, Beetroot, Green Asparagus, Radish and Almond sauce. Well, we have no idea
COSTA CUISINE
where Les Cubes sources its chicken, but this has to be the best piece of poultry that any of us has ever tasted. Indeed, it sent one of the Society team flying out to the kitchen to congratulate the chef on the spectacular texture and moistness of the dish. The quinoa worked perfectly with the chicken and with the other flavour combinations to deliver what Gregg Wallace on Masterchef would undoubtedly pronounce “a thing of beauty.” And from chicken we moved on to Rack of Milk-Fed Lamb with Cous Cous, Pumkin Puree, Green Olives, Moroccan Lemon and Ras al Hanout sauce. This was another winning combination that nods its head to the flavours of the traditional Moroccan lamb tagine while serving the elements in an updated style to create a thoroughly contemporary
dish. By now our waistbands had started to strain a little, but ever diligent in the pursuit of great food, we happily kept going when Smoked Sturgeon with Vegetables and Brava sauce was set in front of us. It is the first time we have seen sturgeon on a menu and at first sight we guessed that it might be tuna due to its dense texture. However, after one bite we knew this was no tuna; this substantial and meaty fish is not as boldly flavoured as mackerel and its
delicate taste belies it appearance, and we agreed that its closest relative may be smoked haddock, a glorious dish if ever there was one. If you’ve never eaten sturgeon, go to Les Cubes for the chance to do so. Then the grand finale arrived – desserts from The Sweetest Moment of the menu. The two selected were excellent choices to conclude our visit: Piña Colada Caramelized Pineapple with Piña Colada Ice Cream and a Crispy Pineapple Flower had us all fighting over the last spoonful and trying to remember the lyrics to “The Pina Colada Song.” We then dived into a Chocolate Fondant with Pistachio Ice Cream and Raspberries that we all agreed was just flawless in every respect. The fondant was light and gooey and the pistachio ice cream had the density and richness that only a handmade ice cream ever has. Then it was time for coffee. Just as we all agreed that this was one of the most superlative menus we’d ever tasted the heavens opened, but we left happily singing, “If you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain…” Next time we visit—and we will—we hope the sun is shining over Les Cubes, because then the weather, the view and the menu will add up to total perfection. THAI
TO DIE FOR
OUR RECOMMENDATION? For a real taste of Thailand, do not miss the Mango and Sticky Rice.
T
here are cuisines for all seasons: comforting goulashes for the winter, gorgeous green salads when spring is in full flower but when summer comes round again you know that your local Thai restaurant can deliver exactly what you need. We are very lucky to have a number of local establishments that deliver dishes packed with flavour and one of our favourites is Top Thai, conveniently situated in Nueva Andalucía’s Centro Plaza. When we heard that it was opening in Estepona’s Laguna Village we just had to go along and test drive the new restaurant. First and foremost this is a wonderful summer venue, with diners being offered the chance to enjoy a cocktail on the terrace while being lulled into a state of blissful relaxation by the centre’s many water features and the sight of the sun sparkling on the Mediterranean. In fact, we must confess that we have often intended to pop in to Laguna Village for a quick snack at lunchtime, only to find ourselves glued to our chairs for most of the afternoon. Needless to say, we feel that the owners of Top Thai have probably found their ideal venue. When we had roused ourselves out of our Zen coma we managed a stroll through the menu, which contained all our old Thai favourites, along with some imaginative additions to the culinary canon. Admittedly our starter, a Thai Mixed, was a bit of a compromise
144
to our stomachs, being a dish which contained many of the elements that make Thai cooking such a fresh and tempting option when the summer kicks in. You really must start with this when you visit Top Thai because it includes Spring Rolls, Prawns and Wonton, all of which can be dipped into a tempting variety of peanut, sweet and sour and spicy sauces. We enjoyed the process of deciding which was our favourite dip but were happy that we had opted for a sharing starter; all the more room for the main courses. The Kapraw was a big success – this dish is offered with Chicken, Beef, Prawns or Duck, but we chose the Fish. This is a beautifully crispy stir-fry dish, served with Chilli, Green Beans, Garlic and Basil Leaves. The chef was very accommodating about the level of spiciness required, but we left the final decision to him. Apparently some customers ask for the levels of chilli to be stepped up but, in our collective opinion, you would need an iron constitution to cope with the damage to your taste-buds and it would be a pity to mask the seamless marriage of flavours with too much heat.
Phad Thai is probably one of the most famous of all Thai classics, a solid favourite with the punters who frequent Bangkok’s famous street food outlets so, in a further stab at authenticity, we ordered the Chicken version. Served in the usual way with Noodles, Bean Sprouts, Peanuts and Egg this was a true taste of Thailand all in one dish, satisfying and packed full of flavour. The third member of the party decided to choose something from the Specials section of the menu. Namtok Ped is basically a Crispy Duck Salad, served
with Chilli, Onion, Coriander and Lemon Juice and is the ideal summer lunch choice, being both filling and beautifully fresh and zesty. This proved a hit with all members of the party, who mysteriously found their forks being drawn to the plate of the unfortunate person who had the bad luck to order it. Mention the words ‘comforting’ and ‘dessert’ in close proximity and thoughts inevitably turn to winter warmers like crumbles and sponge puddings.
However, Thai cuisine also offers third courses that comfort, albeit in a slightly different way. Designed to cool and soothe the most overstimulated palate, we loved the array flavours and textures on offer. Our recommendation? For a real taste of Thailand, do not miss the Mango and Sticky Rice. If you have ever experienced the horrific childhood staple of six grains of rice in a litre of watery milk, then we can guarantee that this is not even remotely similar. Think, rice pudding as it might be served in heaven – just the dish to round off a wonderful lunch. Top Thai proves, once again, that you can travel around the world in 80 dishes without once leaving the Coast. For those of you who aren’t planning a trip to Thailand in the immediate future, you can be sure to find all the authentic flavours of that country in Estepona’s Laguna Village. topthai.es

COSTA CUISINE
O
ne of my pet peeves is food wastage. Did you know that the UK throws away seven million tonnes of food and drink every year, the majority of which could have been consumed? It’s costing the country billions of pounds per annum. This situation is destructive to the environment and to the health of our communities. Each time food remains uneaten, all the resources that went into producing, processing, packaging and transporting it are also wasted. This means huge amounts of land, water, energy, money and other materials are depleted unnecessarily. Wasting all this food is costly to individuals, businesses, municipalities and the environment. Given the resources demanded for food production, the increasing realities of climate change, and the fact that one in six Americans are hungry, it is critical that we shift our behaviours towards a more sustainable and efficient use of food. Food is expensive and it is the highest cost related to house and family. So what can we do about it?
Make a Grocery List Before Shopping
How many of us go out shopping intending to buy just a few things and come back home with three times more than we planned and budgeted for? Make a list and try to stick to it.
Use Your Freezer
Use your freezer more often. I tend to use mine when I realise I have too much of one fresh product. I often freeze overripe bananas (for smoothies - peeled of course!) berries, tomato sauce and anything freezable that I cook too much of.
temperature and which are better refrigerated. Also, keeping your fridge at the correct temperature can help your food stay fresh for longer. Your fridge should be below five degrees Celsius; if you’re uncertain use a fridge thermometer to check. Many of us are guilty of not storing our food in the best place to keep it fresh for longer. Store bread in a cupboard or bread-bin, keep fruit in the fridge (except for bananas) and always store potatoes in a cool, dark place
gone past its best. Keep a stock of staple foods, such as pasta and rice, so you can always rustle up something using whatever is in the fridge.
We often cook too much
Here are some examples:
We often cook or prepare too much. Start being more mindful of portion control and perhaps cook foods that you know you can have for lunch the day after. I often cook more of the foods I know my family will want to take with them as a packed lunch to enjoy the next day.
Have a well stocked dry goods pantry
I often buy dry goods in bulk to keep prices down and to make sure I can always rustle something up. Use store cupboard staples to make meals out of leftovers and food that’s
Re-grow your food
There are a number of fruits and vegetables that you can replant and grow yourself, ensuring that you always have these items on hand when you need them and helping you to cut down on the money that you spend on produce every week.
Lettuce: Lettuce and bok choy are easy to grow from scraps. Instead of throwing out those leftover leaves, simply place them in a bowl with just a bit of water in the bottom. Keep the bowl somewhere that gets good sunlight and mist the leaves with water a couple of times each week. After three or four days you will notice roots beginning to appear, along with new leaves. When this happens you can transplant your lettuce into soil. Celery: This is one of the easiest foods to grow from leftover scraps. Just cut off the bottom or base of your celery and lay it in a bowl with just a bit of warm water in the bottom. Keep the bowl in direct sunlight as long as possible each day and, after about a week, you will begin to see the leaves thickening and growing along the base. When this happens, you can transplant your celery into soil and wait for it to grow. Carrots: Very easy to grow because you just put the tops in some water and, when the green tops are visible and roots start sprouting, plant it outside. Any root vegetable can be grown this way, including turnips, beets and parsnips.

QUINOA & OAT COCONUT PORRIDGE Porridge - synonymous with lifeless mush that tastes like wallpaper glue. Aha not until you have tasted this my friends. Mr R that used to not be such a big fan of porridge now really enjoys it with the various toppings I conjure up. This my friends is a warm, filling, hearty, coco-nutty HUGG that will satisfy anyone!
Ingredients 1 cup (240 grams) of Quinao (pre-cooked see basics) 1 cup (240 grams) of Oats 2 cups of coconut milk (480 grams) ½ cup of water (120 grams) Pinch Of Cinammon Pinch of salt Vanilla (optional) Stewed Blueberries Fruit to top it off
Method I like to keep pre-cooked grains in my fridge in a big batch. This is what I like to call a “plant based steak”. My staple favourites are rice & buckwheat and quinoa. Mixing grains/pulses/rice/ seeds/nuts creates protein, easily absorbable amino acids. More about this in basics. In a hot pan add pre cooked quinoa, oats and coconut milk except for the blueberries and heat up gently until it all comes together to a porridge like creamy consistensy. Lastly adding the cinnamon and pinch of salt. In a separate pan heat up the blueberries with a splash of agave syrop or maple syrop. Mix and stew until warm, syropy and sweet. Top off your beautiful porridge with the blueberries and fruits that you love!

Your Palate
Sweet Wine, Dessert & Blue Cheese Dessert wines come in numerous styles, and there’s certainly at least one that will please even those who assume they won’t like any sweet liquid booze. There are at least five dessert wines every foodie should know: Fortified, Botrytised, Late Harvest, VDN & Icewine. There are simple rules for combining solid and liquid desserts for the tastiest results. To start, the dessert wine should be slightly sweeter than the dessert itself to achieve the best balance of flavors. At D-Wine we cover a whole spectrum of desserts such as World of Chocolate, Vanilla Broken Glass, Tart Tatin, Cheesecake or Lemon Tart, Berry Crepes or the Strawberry Meadow, among other delightful creations from our chef. 150

If you have lived here for some time then you will know that summer means fun! This is often in the shape of festivals, some of which are local and/or religious, while some have distinctly pagan roots. Here are three of our favourites.
Festival of San Juan
Commemorating the longest day and shortest night on 23rd to the 24th of June is the Nig ht of San Juan, a festival marke d by ritual and celebrated all ov er Spain each year. Every Spanish reg ion has its own distinctive way of marking the event, but they all see m to include bonfires, plenty of foo d and drink and lots of people!

16th July
Feast of Virgen Del Carmen Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of fishermen and also known as the Queen of the Seas. Her feast day on 16th July is celebrated with enthusiasm all along the Coast. Entertainment, fireworks and music fill the streets alongside a procession between Marbella’s fishing port and Puerto Banús where a statue of the Virgin is carried into the sea, accompanied by a flotilla of fishing boats, to bless the waters and ensure good catches for the coming year. When living in Spain, do as the Spanish do. It is always fascinating to see how traditional Spanish festivals manage to combine religious devotion with a seemingly endless capacity for partying. In the summer beach parties with barbecues feature heavily – so what’s not to like?
In Marbella, bonfires are lit the beaches and peop on le party into the small hours wit h music, entertainment, firewo rks and moragas (grilled sardin es on the beach). It is a wonderf ul sight to see hundreds of fire s burning on the beaches and cro wds of people taking to the water in joyous celebration. This is one spectacular beach party you don’t want to miss! Bring a towel if you’re planning on a night time dip and perhaps a jumper in case it gets chilly.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION
with Kids
Since 2013, Sam Reynard a bright, young filmmaker who trained in Los Angeles, the world’s No. 1 film city, has been running film camps for kids during the long summer holidays on the Costa del
Sol. Whether your child wants to be the next Spielberg or not, the Mad Hatters’ Film Camps are an excellent opportunity to get them involved in a fun, creative activity where they come away with a
finished film to their. SOCIETY talked to Sam Reynard, the man who started it all, and to Kirsten Armstrong, who is adding music video performance to the camp’s action-packed courses.
We talked to Sam first…
A good attitude, great ideas and a smile... everything else is included in the course! How did the idea come together in the beginning and what did you have to do to get it all set up? After finishing my BA in Film Production, parents from a local school contacted me asking if I could make their daughter a short movie for her birthday. I thought the idea sounded fun; the script needed work but had everything within it to make an entertaining watch. We shot it in four days and and it took me a few weeks to edit it, due to all the animation. The feedback was very positive and although the experience was exhausting and challenging, the pay off was well worth it. A few more parents contacted me after and this sparked the idea for the Mad Hatter’s Film Camp.
Did you get support locally from schools? Sotogrande International School was the first school I approached as I used to be a Soto boy myself. I ran the first three summer camps there before opening my own studio here in Marbella. The camp this year will be held at a beachside villa in Guadalmina Baja.
What do kids need to bring with them? A good attitude, great ideas and a smile; everything else is included in the course. And, we take youngsters from 8 – 18 years, so it’s a great mix.
What courses are you offering this year? We’ve got the Narrative Film Course that teaches all aspects of film production plus some acting skills, and now that Kirsten has joined us, we’re also able to offer a very exciting Music Video course that includes singing lessons, songwriting and performance techniques.
160
And, over to Kirsten who joins the team this year. Why is Mad Hatter’s Film Camp so great for young people? I feel that this course is a fabulous outlet for those kids who lean more towards the creative side of their brains. Every child is different and not all kids are academic. I went through school struggling with maths but when it came to drama and music I felt happy and excelled in these subjects, so I knew that this would be where my life path/ career would take me. So I pursued it. When I was growing up in Marbella I would have loved to have had access to something like this film camp. It’s like Einstein said ‘’Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a frog on its ability to climb a tree it will spend the rest of its life thinking that its stupid.’’
Tell us about your background in music performance? I have a lot of writing experience. I studied in music in London for four years and have a Diploma and Masters degree in Contemporary Music & Performance. Following this I have written and sung for a few well known producers and, in fact, I started session singing for Rob Davis who wrote Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t get you out of my head” when I was 16 years old. I’ve been lucky enough to be introduced to the right people and to have built up a great database of contacts within the music industry.
‘’Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a frog on its ability to climb a tree it will spend the rest of its life thinking that its stupid.’’
Thanks Sam and Kirsten! If you think your child would love the Mad Hatter’s Film Camp then enroll them soon for the July 2016 camps at madhattersfilmcamp.com

Línea Directa HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane.
APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout
Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout.
TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes.
CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD)
We hope the information provided in this article is of interest.
Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout.

is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT

BEAD UP!
I
f you are hoping to add a bit of sparkle to your summer, then may we introduce you to Michele Godfrey’s brand new jewellery label, Love to Bead? These eye catching and elegant crystal beaded necklaces are made up of semi-precious crystals and the collection comes in vibrant and eye catching colours. Whether you want a stylish, yet understated necklace or a statement piece, you are sure to find something to interest you. If, however, you have something specific in mind, Michele is also happy to custom make necklaces for clients’ specifications. The necklaces are generally quite long and especially come into their own when a couple is teamed and layered. Michele says, “The idea for Love to Bead came to me at the beginning of this year. I previously owned a lovely long crystal beaded necklace which I bought on my travels several years ago. I wore it to death and, when I lost it, searched high and low for something alike but to no avail.
able to display some of her early necklaces to customers and the positive feedback that she received gave her the confidence to become a full-time jewellery designer and launch her new business venture.

AMARE HOTEL OPENS ITS DOORS TO MARBELLA
A
new, luxury hotel in Marbella is always welcome and the glamorous opening of the Amare Hotel revealed what promises to be one of the ‘go to’ upmarket hotels and spots for unwinding. Its stunning beachside location that is also within walking distance of the Old Town makes it ideal for vacation stays and a perfect relaxation spot for Marbellís . The Amare boasts a rooftop bar with stunning views across the sea, a luxurious swimming pool, a spa with an excellent range of treatments, underground parking and to complete the hotel complex, access to frontline sunbeds. The Amare’s owners and management team want to bring back the “good old days” of Marbella and the opulent launch party suggests they will succeed. At the opening night there was freeflowing Moet & Chandon champagne and exquisite canapés were served into the early hours of the morning. During the earlier part of the evening, guests were treated to a spectacular fashion show of Patricia Nahmad’s new beach collection, which was followed by dancing to live music alongside a bevy of beautiful, tropical ballerinas for hours on end.

The Amare also has a dedicated business centre, where you can find Von Poll Estates, a leading real estate company. Marbella’s Fischer Group has recently acquired the licence for Von Poll and are proud to partner with the Amare Hotel and TUI to promote it to German visitors. This hotel has everything you could want: congratulations to everyone who has made this new venture possible and bringing back the lifestyle Marbella is renowned for. von-poll.de
It looks as though Michele will have a busy few months ahead of her because she will be selling her sparkling creations at La Sala by the Sea this summer. She says, “This in an amazing platform for me to showcase my necklaces and I am very excited to see what the future holds.” mgmarbella@outlook.com Tel. 610 102 843 f / Love to Bead
