PUBLISHER’S LETTER

MARCH IS HERE AND WE’RE ALREADY GETTING READY FOR THE NEW SEASON! After the alcoholic excesses of St. David’s and St. Patrick’s Days (on the 1st and 17th of the month respectively) we will be edging close to Easter and the first significant wave of holidaymakers. We’re ready for the summer season – but are you? To help you to create that celebratory mood we have the perfect cover star in the shape of Will Smith. Not only has he enjoyed a very successful recording career but he is now one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood. Having been assured that he would be likely to be offered a place at one of America’s most prestigious universities, he chose to turn academia down in favour of a career as a rapper. Like Muhammad Ali (who he went on to play in a 2001 biopic), Smith has a self-belief that might be construed as arrogance - if, that is, he couldn’t put his money where his mouth is. If he carries on making the right career decisions he looks as though we be seeing even more of him in the future. It’s an exciting time for Gibraltar, as it launches itself as a place where startup businesses can take advantage of its presence on the blockchain. Don’t know what this is? Well, join the club, but don’t worry – just turn to our unmissable guide to Fintech, the blockchain and Gibraltar’s new emerging role in the global economy. It looks as though the powers-that-be realised that BREXIT could either be a huge blow or a massive opportunity and they have decided to ensure that the latter scenario won the day. As the temperature heats up it’s time to get out and about again after the short hibernation period of winter and it’s not only an easy way to enjoy yourself. As our relationships expert Sam Owen explains, a good social life can be good

for your health too, helping us all to retain our memories as we grow older. We all love that great BBC drama series, Peaky Blinders – even if it is a bit of a stretch to imagine hardened gangsters issuing threats in the same accent that Jasper Carrott delivered his stand-up routines. Of course, you always get a few fanatics who are only happy when they’ve managed to Peaky Blinder themselves from head to toe. Jonathan Yeadon reveals how many of his punters are now asking for the full Tommy Shelby hairdo. Have you booked your annual holiday yet? If not you’re not too late and you can take advantage of our guide to the world’s best beaches as announced by Trip Advisor. It looks as though the Caribbean is the place to be if you enjoy a lazy sea, sun and sand holiday, although Spain does manage an entry in the Top 10. Have a look at our World Top 10 and find out which place on the Iberian Peninsula managed to impress the judging panel most. If you – or your circle of friends – are addicted to taking selfies then we have some advice for you from a professional photographer. There is an art to it, apparently – and there was me, thinking that it was just a matter of posing and pouting! Ian Greenland offers some unmissable advice, so whether you’re recording your expensive holiday in Antigua and Barbuda or attending the opening of the latest Marbella hotspot you’ll know how to create the perfect image. Remember – social media is a weapon, so use it carefully! Have a terrific March. ‘Til next time… Andy Clark

WILL SMITH

Big Willie Style! By Kj Elsdon

There are A-list black actors. There are those lucky few who have made a successful crossover from music to acting – or the transition from acting to a musical career. And then there’s Will Smith. His early collaboration with his friend Jeffrey Townes (aka DJ Jazzy Jeff) led naturally to the runaway success of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which was not only built around Smith but reflected his life as a boy who had made the transition from the mean streets of Philadelphia to the man that Forbes magazine named the world’s most bankable star.

orn Willard Carroll Smith Jr. on September the 25th 1968 to Willard Sr. (a refrigeration engineer) and Caroline (a Philadelphia school board administrator), the young Will was raised in a home with his older sister Pamela and younger twins Harry and Ellen, in which education was of prime importance, so what his mother made of his decision to eschew a place at the internationally renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology to pursue a career as a rapper can only be imagined. To say that she was displeased would undoubtedly be an understatement but, denied the benefit of hindsight, she might be heartened to learn that her son was no fool and his instincts were correct. By the time that Caroline was trying to interest her hard-headed son in attending America’s most prestigious university Will had already met his chosen collaborator after being asked to fill in as ‘hype man’ for Jeff Townes when he was running the turntables at a house party on a few doors away from the Smith family’s residence. This proved such a success that Townes and Smith, even after Townes’s regular hype man turned up late to the party, decided that they should team up and work together. Will then signed up a friend, Clarence Holmes (aka Ready Rock C) to be the team’s beatboxer and it wasn’t long before Philadelphia based Word Up Records had released their first single ‘Girls Ain’t Nothing but Trouble’, an amusing and good-natured rant that was notably free from the type of aggression and profanity that normally characterises rap. This successfully set the tone for Smith’s music career; perhaps those for whom N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton set the benchmark for rap and hip-hop weren’t impressed, but Will and Jeff’s light-hearted approach proved popular. This early success attracted attention from Richard Simmons and Jive Records, who could see the value in this new, lighter version of rap propounded by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. The duo’s first album, Rock the House, had been released on the Word Up label in 1986 and was given a new lease of life when released on Jive in 1987 and, in 1989, the track ‘Parents Just Don’t Understand’ received the first Grammy for Best Rap Performance. Jeff and Will would go on to nail their biggest hit, ‘Summertime’ in 1991, which won another Grammy to seal their success. Smith has always maintained that he and Townes are still close friends, to the extent that DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince are remain a going concern because, “We never split up!”

This success had generated a healthy income which Smith, as a handsome young man about town, had no problem dispending with. In fact, it is alleged that he went on a lengthy spending bender, which was unfortunately bolstered by some money that he should have handed in to the IRS for his taxes. When NBC signed Smith to front a new sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, in 1990 he was virtually bankrupt. Not for long, however, as this new vehicle quickly proved a hugely popular hit. Constructed as a vehicle for Smith, the concept (explained in

,,

I KNOW HOW TO LEARN ANYTHING I WANT TO LEARN. I ABSOLUTELY KNOW THAT I COULD LEARN HOW TO FLY THE SPACE SHUTTLE BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE KNOWS HOW TO FLY IT, AND THEY PUT IT IN A BOOK. GIVE ME THE BOOK, AND I DO NOT NEED SOMEBODY TO STAND UP IN ,, FRONT OF THE CLASS. the series’s theme tune) was that the main character, having enjoyed a somewhat rambunctious existence on the streets of West Philadelphia, had been encouraged by his over-protective mother to move in with his aunt, uncle and cousins in Bel-Air. The humour in the series was largely generated by the mismatch between the privileged existence of the California branch of the family and the new arrival’s ‘street’ attitude and the show proved such a success that it ran for six seasons between 1990 and 1995.

If Smith had been looking for a springboard to a more permanent acting career, then he had been very lucky to have attracted the attention of NBC, because offers started to arrive in earnest. What is generally accepted as his first major acting role was playing the key part of Paul, a confidence trickster who claims to be the son of Sidney Poitier, in Six Degrees of Separation. This was an inspired piece of casting since, not only did Smith have the acting chops to inject some real bite into the role, his good looks made Paul’s claim seem eminently plausible. However, it was 1997 that turned out to be a true annus mirabilis for Smith, with the release of the box office smash Men in Black, the theme of which also effectively launched his career as a solo musical artist. Cleverly using a sample from Patrice Rushen’s 1982 recording, ‘Forget Me Nots’ ‘Men in Black’ successfully gained extensive airplay on radio stations around the world and, in 1998, earned Smith another Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. Co-starring the vastly more experienced Tommy Lee Jones MiB, as it became known, gave Smith the chance to show off his considerable box office appeal. As Agent J, part of the government agency tasked with keeping an eye on Earth’s secret alien population, Smith’s director, Barry Sonnenfeld soon realised that his wife, a fan of The Fresh Prince of BelAir who had originally championed his casting as Agent J, knew what she was talking about. ‘Men in Black’ and Smith’s second single release ‘Just Cruisin’’ were released on his first solo album, Big Willie Style, along with ‘Gettin’ Jiggy wit It’, thereby helping it to the top of the Billboard Album Chart. It also sold strongly in the UK and in South Africa,

where The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air had been hugely successful, as apartheid was swept away and a growing appetite for the possibility of black aspiration and achievement took its place. Not all of Smith’s movie roles were as successful as MiB (he would reprise his outing as Agent J in MiB2 in 2002 and in MiB3 in 2012); 1999’s Wild Wild West, another Sonnenfeld creation, would prove to be a turkey, although it would give him a chance to produce another successful theme tune, not to mention act alongside self-confessed Shakespeare addict Kenneth Branagh. Smith’s personal life was, like his professional existence, not entirely straightforward, his first marriage to Sheree Zampino lasting from 1992 until 1995. Despite having a son together (Trey would later appear in the music video for his father’s take on the Bill Withers classic ‘Just the Two of Us’) the couple’s marriage soon hit the rocks. In 1997 he married fellow actor, Jada Pinkett, with whom he went on to have two more children, Jaden (born in 1998) and Willow (2000). Willow soon gained her first movie role by playing her real father’s screen daughter in I Am Legend, a 2007 remake of the Richard Matheson novel of the same name. Any doubts that The Fresh Prince might lack the gravitas to pull off the spectacularly bleak role of Dr. Robert Neville, one of only a few survivors of an ill-conceived medical vaccine that wiped out most of humanity and left any survivors as vampiric mutants, were soon put to rest. I Am Legend proved to be a wise career move, with critics agreeing that Smith’s performance was “mesmerising”, with many commenting on his “graceful and effortless” acting style. Whether Willow’s participation helped him to invest the part with additional emotion can only be guessed at, but I Am Legend did brisk business at the box office, eventually making more than $585 million. Given that it cost $150 million to make, this represented a tidy profit. In the meantime, Smith the musical performer continued to release albums, 1999’s Willennium building on the success of Big Willie Style and featuring his old mate, Jeff Townes. However, after he found increasing success as a leading actor, his reputation as a rapper who could still cut the mustard did begin to dip somewhat: 2002’s Born to Reign and 2005’s Lost and Found failed to reap

Ritchie’s live action version of the Disney favourite, Aladdin. Taking on the larger than life role of the Genie, voiced to great effect in the 1992 animated original by the late Robin Williams, Will was no doubt cast for his phenomenal energy and general likeability. Shooting wrapped at the end of January and the movie is slated for release in 2019.

The spectre of sci-fi fantasy has played a major part in Smith’s career and, in 2017 he landed the role of LAPD Officer Daryl Ward in Bright, which was described as an urban Smith’s schedule is looking less hectic fantasy crime film. Although it was than it used to, which is probably due regularly streamed via Netflix the to a combination of critics were less than seemingly happy impressed and it looked IT'S QUITE HIGHLY amarriage, a feeling as though Smith would POSSIBLE THAT I that he has more than have to do some adequately proved work to recapture the HAVE PEAKED. Wedding Bells for Idris

We seem to have been just a little obsessed with celebrity splits lately, so it’s wonderful to be able to report that everyone’s favourite action hero, Idris Elba proposed to his girlfriend, Sabrina Dhowre last month. He didn’t do it by halves either, choosing a movie event at a cinema in London to get down on one knee. Public celebrity declarations are as rare as hen’s teeth, so naturally this very public proposal appeared on news reports on the BBC and SKY News.

The couple reportedly met when Elba was filming The Mountain Between Us in Canada and ‘came out’ as an item at the Toronto International Film Festival last September. Elba has been married and divorced twice, so here’s hoping that it’s third time lucky for him. With a new series of Luther being slated for 2018 it could be described as the best of times and the worst of times for female Idris fans. We envy you, Sabrina!

Serena’s Childbirth Nightmare

She might look like the physically fittest woman on the planet, but it seems that Serena Williams’s experience of giving birth to her first child, daughter Olympia was far from straightforward. Describing her shock and horror when she developed a “slew of health complications”, the tennis star recently revealed how she nearly died on the delivery table and spent the first weeks as a new mother confined to bed. Serena had to undergo emergency surgery to remove a massive abdominal haematoma, echoing the pulmonary embolism that she experienced back in 2011. Doctors worried that parts of the original ball of blood had broken away and were travelling to her lungs, as her violent coughing led to the Caesarean incision bursting open. Fortunately, all was well in the end, but medical experts agree that things were touch and go for a while. Just as well all that tennis has left her in such prime condition.

Auf Wiedersehen, Pet?

Is there anyone on the planet – apart from Katie Price, obviously – who has had such acute and public man trouble as Cheryl Tweedy-ColeFernandez-Versini? It looks as though poor little Liam Payne is the latest to bite the dust after reports emerged that La Cole was furious about his tendency to “overshare” their domestic disagreements via social media. It is also rumoured that our Liam was also still smarting from several rejected marriage proposals. Whatever the reason, it looks as though the couple is heading for the skids. Far be it for me to submit some distinctly non-sisterly comments about La Tweedy’s latest domestic mishap, but her 2003 conviction for racially aggravated assault after her attack on cloakroom attendant Sophie Amogbokpa leads us to believe that she will have no problem in fighting her corner when it comes to battling for custody of Bear, the couple’s child who was born in March 2017. Gloves off, Liam – something tells us that you’re going to need to fight hard and fight dirty!

A BRIT Rowdy February was, as tradition dictates, the time of the BRIT Awards, which this year was hosted by comedian Jack Whitehall. It is rumoured that Whitehall, who has parted company with his long-term girlfriend Gemma Chan after six years together, was seen whispering sweet nothings into the ear of the 22 year-old Best British Female and Breakthrough Act winner, Dua Lipa. It really has been Lipa’s year, with a string of chart successes and a number of high profile live appearances, including some sold out fixtures in notoriously sniffy and ‘seen it all before’ LA. If she can keep up that level of activity and success throughout 2018, then lucky old Jack Whitehall, we say!

Valentine’s Curse Hits Jen and Justin Is Jennifer Aniston the Cheryl Cole of Hollywood? We’re only asking because her love life seems as much of a mess as our Chezza’s. After a four-year relationship with actor Daniel McDonald, Jen married Brad Pitt in 2000 after dating him for two years, but the wheels fell off towards the end of 2004, when gossip alleged that Brad had been getting a little too close to his Mr. & Mrs. Smith costar, Angelina Jolie. Relationships with actor Vince Vaughn and musician John Mayer followed, but it wasn’t until she met actor Justin Theroux in 2011 that things started to look rosier on the romantic front for the former Friends star. The couple married in August 2015 and all looked fine for a while until (it is alleged) they found it impossible to agree on where their permanent base should be. Despite having bought a Bel-Air house together shortly after they first started dating, it seems that friction between the pair followed that classic California v NYC dilemma. Still, we should look on the bright side – at least they can each choose where they would prefer to settle now!

Reality Bites So after all my talk about not changing a thing this year I realised (a month late) that what I got for Christmas was actually chubby! Time to call in the big shots and get myself summer ready! I have been juicing, protein shaking and training within an inch of my life this month, but the results better be worth it and I look like a slightly shorter (all 5’3 feet of me) Victoria’s Secret model, because goodness I have put in the work!

gives SOCIETY readers the chance to keep up with her latest exploits.

Luke Hill has been training my friend Lisa and myself all month, in both personal training sessions at his studio in Marbella and his group sessions on Mistral beach. It’s not for the faint hearted, but definitely one for anyone wanting results. Who knew I would ever be able to lift that!

The Butterfly Effect Another sweet little place to visit if your looking for something to do with the little ones is the Mariposa (butterfly) park in Benalmadena. Both my nine-year- old and sixyear-old loved marking off all the different species of butterflies they found and interacting with the very cheeky baby kangaroo. The staff are all super friendly and it’s educational too - what’s not to love!

Yoga secrets! I have discovered a secret gem of a place in Marbella called the Farmacy. Not only does this amazing place offer a number of different yoga classes from those for beginners to aerial pole. it also serves the most amazing juices and vegan treats, and is definitely a place to check out if you need to find your inner self and get your Zen back, something I’ve loved doing due to the busy schedule of my personal and business life. Sometimes you just need to shut off and relax your body and mind. Namaste everyone!

Treat days are my favourite days! As I’ve been training and eating uberly healthily every week, I allow myself a little treat day on a Sunday! Yum! Two of my favourite places are the good old Hard Rock Cafe in Puerto Banús, where I always have a veggie burger and side of mac and cheese! And Pappardella where the pasta portions are nearly as big as me! Plus the Cosmos at Hard Rock are pretty decent too ‘wink wink’!

Sera Jane’s birthday celebrations My beautiful friend Sera celebrated her birthday this month with a lovely ladies lunch at A Levante in Marbella harbour, I have to say the food was really scrummy and much better than I had imagined, and the setting is divine. A must try for people wanting a little something different.

Fashion is my Victim So many people comment on my Instagram page about my outfits that I’ve decided to start a Depop account to pass on my love of fashion, and rehome some of my beloved clothes. My user name is natalierich0203 and I’ll be selling lots of designer new or nearly used bits, with a percentage of profits going to the Bardou foundation P.S. How amazing did my glam squad do again on this day! My hair and makeup were beyond on point, with Danielle slaying my face and Emily giving me film star curls on my natural hair! Thanks girlies!xx Thank you Dressing Room for my fabulous hot pink blazer, the rest of my outfit is Versace, Zara, Jimmy Choo and Louboutin

Welcome to the family! I’d like to introduce you all to the newest addition to our family, Mrs Gwinny and Mrs Pig! Get it? Everyone knows I’m animal obsessed, so when these two little cuties needed adopting I couldn’t say no. They are actually ridiculously cute and squeak their appreciation when you come bearing food! Love them!

A girl's got to eat! Ok so I know I said Sunday was my treat day but what’s a girl to do when one of her besties arrives in town? Of course we had to head to Nobu at Puento Romano hotel to dine on lobster tacos and divine black cod! And before you ask, Rodrigo did not bring his ribs! (Roddy was the first male to get rib removal in the world) The problem is with not being so used to drinking alcoholic beverages now the delicious cocktails went straight to my head and I have no recolection of the last photo with my friend Yolanda even being taken! Or dancing the night away in La Suite nightclub till 5am! You know it’s a fun night when your rolling in when the sun is rising! Well until the kids wake up that is!!!

Love them or loathe them, selfies seem here to stay. As long as people have faces, cameras, arms and the notion that anyone gives a shit, Facebook and Instagram will be straining with the weight of a bazillion vanity shots. When tech pioneers first developed the Net, I'm sure they didn't expect to catch quite so much trout. With jaws set, abs tensed, eyes wide and lips full, it seems we've turned the lens on ourselves just to stand out in an increasingly busy online world.

I

t used to be we gazed at the world around us for beauty, inspiration and a record of human achievement. Some 60 years before the invention of the film camera, famous landscape painter John Constable sat below evocatively cumulus skies and tall, swaying trees, painting the intricate majesty of Salisbury Cathedral. His famous 1823 work depicts cattle grazing peacefully by a river as a smartly dressed gent squires a lady in the grounds and holds his walking stick aloft in awe of the natural beauty surrounding this holy place... His stick hath not an iPhone 5 attached to the end! That's not to say there was no interest in oneself nearly two centuries before the dawn of the profile pic, but society's demand for the selfie paled by comparison with today. Furthermore, those attempting one had to contend with trying to sketch themselves whilst simultaneously looking into a mirror or body of water, remaining perfectly still and not getting a really concentratey face on - it wasn't an easy feat. Even Picasso, who is considered by all accounts fair cop with a brush, frequently got them wrong, painting both ears on the same side of his head or both eyes on one side of his nose. In fact Constable himself took a fair stab at one early in his career, nailing the trout pout long before it became de rigueur. But one only need look at the hollow, downturned gaze to see he knew his time could be better spent elsewhere.

Constable himself took a fair stab at one early in his career, nailing the trout pout long before it became de rigueur.

If you're detecting a slight whiff of cynicism already..... thanks for paying attention. In truth, of course, there are times when selfies are acceptable. eg. Online dating profile, when there's not a Spanish waiter on hand to get that shot of you pissed and grinning on a night out, or your publisher has given you a day to come up with an article on selfies and demanded your own should accompany it. However, the first time a millennial walked down the road carrying a selfie stick and didn't get chased by several people waving actual sticks, something went wrong.

Think of this article as one of those YouTube FAIL compilations where drunk people repeatedly fall off swings, slides, trampolines and quad bikes, thus warning you NOT to mess around drunk on swings, slides, trampolines and quad bikes.

Nevertheless, having already squandered half my word count on this selfie-bashing intro, here's my guide to taking the perfect selfie. Since I’m no expert in poses, fashion, make-up, hair.... or “how to take the perfect selfie”, I'm going to employ the timeworn “what NOT to do approach” and hope that at least narrows it down for you. Think of this article as one of those YouTube FAIL compilations where drunk people repeatedly fall off swings, slides, trampolines and quad bikes, thus warning you NOT to mess around drunk on swings, slides, trampolines and quad bikes. If however you own more than one selfie stick, feel free to sharpen all ends to vicious spikes, down a few sangrias and then mess around on swings, slides, trampolines and quad bikes.

Here goes...

DON'T FAFF!

you couldn't fit a your mouth so small It's no good making . COME ON!! n.. itio nail the compos straw in it you don't

Selfies are all about showing the world what a successful, care-free, fun-loving, cool and spontaneous person you are. You want everyone to know how rich and full your life is, so if you're out in public and you're not nailing both your expression and your aim in the first saaaay, 30 shots, it's time to take yourself to Selfie School (NB: there is no longer a Selfie School since the damages paid out in continuous lawsuits from students who walked into walls or fell down stairs whilst staring at their phones began to outweigh the revenue from tuition fees)

Learn to operate your camera phone with your eyes closed (great for thoughtful, deep selfies), calibrate your arm - not just angle, but extension and rotation. Practise that pout. Are you saying, “I'm having a good day, I'm feeling happy..... and pouting” or is it more “F.M.L., the world keeps knocking me down but I keep getting up.... and pouting”? Is a friend constantly letting down your paired selfies with their unsexy expression or ill-timed blinking? Could this affect the bottom line on your Facebook LIKES? It's time to consider whether you really need those kinds of “friends”.

DON'T LOSE YOUR JOB!

We all know there's nothing more important than showing the world what you're up to, but like anyone with a drink problem, credit card and Amazon account can tell you, a few negligent clicks in one little corner of cyberspace can leave your life in ruins. You may have had the best night of your life, but if your boss is likely to frown on anything you did, don't incriminate yourself.... unless you're gonna get like, TONS of shares. Even then, shares won't pay the rent. Except share-shares, as in when you have shares in a lucrative business, like Snapchat.... or the fucking selfie stick.

if your boss is likely to frown on anything you did, don't incriminate yourself.... unless you're gonna get like, TONS of shares.

The first time a millennial walked down the road carrying a selfie stick and didn't get chased by several people waving actual sticks, something went wrong.

logic and historical wisdom, the Whilst it flies in the face of conventional e stick was in common use selfi the ancient Egyptian hieroglyph suggests ly still a novice, has made a millennia ago, although Eagle-man, clear classic error

Good night, was it?? Post this online and your boss won't believe it's food poi soning keeping you off wo rk on Monday

DON'T BE DESPERATE!

Pages and

Pictures Mus Readt Jackie, Janet and Lee by J. Randy Taraborrelli.

Following the success of his biographies of Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Beyonce, Diana Ross and the Kennedys to name but a few, acclaimed biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli turns his attention to the extraordinary lives of Janet Lee Auchincloss and her daughters, Jackie Bouvier Kennedy and Princess Lee Radziwill. “Do you know what the secret to happily-ever-after is?” Janet would ask her daughters. “Money and power,” she would say. They followed in their mother's footsteps after her marriages to the philandering socialite 'Black Jack' Bouvier and the Standard Oil heir Hugh D. Auchincloss. Jacqueline Bouvier would marry John F. Kennedy and Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. Less well known is the story of her love affairs with a renowned architect and a British peer. Her sister, Lee, had liaisons with one and possibly both of Jackie's husbands, in addition to her own three marriages--to an illegitimate royal, a Polish prince and a Hollywood director. It was the Bouvier women’s lust for money and status that drove them to seek out powerful men, no matter what the cost to themselves.

Whether you enjoy curling up with a good book or enjoying downtime with a drama series, KJ Elsdon bring you the top titles and series from the entertaining world of books and television.

Sneaky Pete This popular series is back for a second series on Amazon Prime with Giovanni Ribisi reprising his role as the slippery titular character. At the time of going to print, details are scant but presumably Bryan Cranston (who co-created the series with David Shore, who is most famous for his involvement with House) will be returning in his role as Vincent Lonigan. The series can probably best be described as ‘high concept’ (an ex-prisoner on the run from the gangster he robbed takes on the identity of his cellmate Pete Murphy and holes up with Pete’s estranged family without anyone suspecting a thing). Still, the first series was enormous fun and its sequel looks well worth watching.

Dead Men’s Trousers by Irvine Welsh

Mark Renton is finally a success. An international jet-setter, he now makes significant money managing DJs, but the constant travel, airport lounges, soulless hotel rooms and broken relationships have left him dissatisfied with his life. He’s then rocked by a chance encounter with Frank Begbie, from whom he’d been hiding for years after a terrible betrayal and the resulting debt. But the psychotic Begbie appears to have reinvented himself as a celebrated artist and – much to Mark’s astonishment – doesn’t seem interested in revenge. Sick Boy and Spud, who have agendas of their own, are intrigued to learn that their old friends are back in town, but when they enter the bleak world of organ-harvesting, things start to go badly wrong. Lurching from crisis to crisis, the four men circle each other, driven by their personal histories and addictions, confused, angry – so desperate that even Hibs winning the Scottish Cup doesn’t really help. One of these four will not survive to the end of this book. Which one of them is wearing Dead Men’s Trousers? Fast and furious, funny and weirdly moving, this is a spectacular return of the crew from Trainspotting.

In the Long Run

The Oscars

Yes, folks – it’s that time of year again and, depending on your point of view, you will either be enjoying the most important cinematic night of the year or watching a lot of spoiled, overpaid luvvies being self-important and generally unbearable. It’s difficult to imagine anyone but the terrific Frances McDormand carrying off the Best Actress award but most of the other categories are less open. There are even rumours that Gary Oldman might fail to be granted the Best Actor gong. Please say it isn’t so – there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth in the SOCIETY offices if he’s robbed at the last minute.

We are looking forward to this so much. A comedy based on Idris Elba’s early years in London and set in the 1980s, this looks like it will be a very welcome addition to the satellite channel’s Spring schedule. Written by Claire Downes, Ian Jarvis, Stuart Lane and Grace Ofori-Attah and co-produced by Elba’s Green Door and Sprout Pictures, In the Long Run follows the lives of immigrants from Sierra Leone, Walter Easmon (played by Elba) and his wife, Evelyn. With Elba’s personal experience of the location and era and the wonderful Bill Bailey playing the part of Walter’s friend and colleague Bagpipes, we can’t see any reason for this not to be the sit-com of the year.

GIBRALTAR’S CRYPTO HARBOUR IS A SAFE PORT FOR

FINTECH By Eleanor McKenzie

When Gibraltar announced that it was introducing Distributed Ledger Technology Regulatory Framework legislation from the beginning of January, there were more than a few people who sat up and took notice. What was it planning? With Brexit looming in the not too distant future, it sounded like the Gibraltar government had spotted an opportunity and now had a cunning plan that would hopefully prove to be much more successful than one of Baldrick’s in Blackadder. On the other hand it is quite logical that Gibraltar, already recognised internationally as one of the world’s best financial jurisdictions, should seek to harness the power of an emerging economy on the blockchain and attract a host of new companies, i.e. Fintech start-ups. It undoubtedly gives Gibraltar a ‘first mover’ advantage in Europe, and may have the potential to perform damage limitation post exiting the EU. Since nobody really knows what the ultimate effect of Brexit will be on either the UK or Gibraltar, or indeed, what any final deal is likely to look like, setting yourself up as a centre of excellence for businesses using blockchain technology seems like a good insurance policy. And now it has a dedicated trading exchange for ICO tokens as well. The Gibraltar Blockchain Exchange (GBX) at Crypto Harbour is a sibling of the Gibraltar Stock Exchange and it will list new tokens approved under Gibraltar’s regulatory framework. But first, what are the regulations and why are they necessary?

WHY IS REGULATION NECESSARY?

"Forget Bitcoin. It's all about the Blockchain" - Forbes

WHAT IS THIS NEW GIBRALTAR LAW? The Gibraltar Financial Services Commission’s (GFSC) DLT Regulatory Framework came in to effect on 1st January 2018. This means that firms in Gibraltar that use DLT (also known as blockchain) to store or transmit value belonging to others, now have to apply for a licence from the GFSC. Nicky Gomez, Head of Risk and Innovation, said: “We are really excited to finally welcome applications from DLT Providers. The team expects to be very busy in the coming months, and are looking forward to working on some interesting and innovative ideas with applicants. Working closely and collaboratively with the financial services industry and the Government of Gibraltar has resulted in the GFSC becoming the first regulator to introduce a DLT Regulatory Framework – it is a very encouraging time and we are also looking forward to the challenge!”

Its core concept – decentralisation – is the antithesis of the centralised organisation of Big Finance worldwide

32

Blockchain technology has been developing for a few years now, but until last year it hadn’t really reached far outside a small community of cyberpunks and technology geeks. Its core concept – decentralisation – is the antithesis of the centralised organisation of Big Finance worldwide, and for many of its supporters, the anarchic nature of the blockchain is one of its big attraction. If you look at the crypto market it neatly divides into three ‘fandoms’: those who believe in its ideology, those who admire the technology and those who are in it for the money. Eva Kaili, writing for Coindesk explained why regulation is needed: “Neither an infant nor an adult, the technology is like a teenager who has already shown strong potential and raised great expectations. But, as it happens with all the teenagers, in order to materialise their potential, they need a disciplined framework, some boost of confidence, a feeling of certainty and the wisest possible direction when necessary.” We have seen real enthusiasm for DLTs, but we are also seeing resistance coming from traditional players and business models. Some investment banks are adopting it, whilst others have denounced it as a “fraud and a Ponzi scheme.” This is particularly noticeable in relation to Bitcoin, which is only one element of the blockchain technology ecosystem, but when you read the mainstream media, you might be lured into thinking that Bitcoin IS the blockchain. It isn’t remotely, but as newcomers try to understand this emerging tool, there is a lot of poor information out there.

Regulation is also needed because there are some bad actors out there who prey on the uninformed consumer. Having regulations for blockchain start-ups issuing tokens in their Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) weeds out those businesses that only wish to scam investors and whose business proposition can never succeed. A regulatory framework will establish confidence in the blockchain’s huge potential to revolutionise everything from property sales to healthcare and banking, and more. We have not really explored where it can go, but it has ‘the sky’s the limit’ possibilities. It is a disruptive technology. As Ms Kaili said:”The emerging business models democratise the value chains, remove transaction costs, optimise the allocation of resources and risks, expand the social inclusion and improve the quality of services and products we receive as customers and as citizens.” The European Union is enthusiastic about blockchain and plans to create a level playing field for both DLT firms and consumers that guarantees legal and institutional certainty.

THE GBX AT CRYPTO HARBOUR GBX aims to be one of the world’s first licensed and regulated token sale platforms and digital asset exchanges operated by an EU regulated stock exchange. The company also aims to develop the capacity to be able to support projects at any stage of their development covering all of their business service needs. And it intends to set a higher standard for token issuance and trading for the benefit of all market participants. GBX offers the Rock Token (RKT) on the Ethereum blockchain and the owners are known as ‘Rockers’ and ‘Rockstars”. During the advance private sale, GBX raised US$21 million. An Early Access sale followed on 7th February and the General Public Token Sale, which started on 8th February, sold out to the tune of $27 million in nine seconds.

As Nick Cowan, CEO of GBX said: “We’re very excited to share the Rock Token with the world. Everyone at the GBX is fully committed to blockchain technology and its potential to change the way that people build their own projects.” No doubt, he is somewhat surprised at the speed with which the token sale achieved its hard cap, which was scheduled to last until 14th February. It didn’t even make it to the first minute, never mind six days. Who will follow in Gibraltar’s footsteps? That remains to be answered. But for now, one of the smallest jurisdictions in Europe is leading the way with its regulatory framework and its innovative GBX exchange. Its Crypto Harbour aims to be a safe port for the Fintech industry worldwide and with its “We will rock you!” attitude, it seems fairly certain that Gibraltar is going to continue its financial success by taking a leap of well-informed faith into the future.

There is also debate over ICOs. Are the tokens a security or a commodity? The U.S. regulator has decided on ‘a security’ but as Kaili pointed out in her article, Europe is taking a more modern approach. It says these old labels don’t fit the new technology and that an ICO is an ICO. It’s different, but regulation is needed to help firms expand this method of crowdfunding while also making investors feel more comfortable with it. And that is where Gibraltar hopes to make significant progress, especially following the hugely successful ICO for the GBX in early February.

During the advance private sale, GBX raised US$21 million. An Early Access sale followed on 7th February and the General Public Token Sale, which started on 8th February, sold out to the tune of

$27 million in nine seconds.

Who will follow in Gibraltar’s footsteps? 33

CLOSERFRIENDSHIPS

LINKED TO SHARPER MEMORY Close friendships help our mental wellbeing. We intuitively know this and love our friends for it. We experience this positive mental well-being effect whenever friends provide emotional support when the going gets tough, practical support when we need an extra pair of ‘hands on deck’ and when they help us to expand our thinking about ourselves and the world from different perspectives. Now, new research released in October 2017 suggests that close friendships may also prevent cognitive decline as we age.

INTERESTINGLY, SUPERAGERS HAVE ALSO BEEN FOUND TO HAVE A HIGHER DENSITY OF NEURONS IN THE PART OF THE BRAIN CONSIDERED TO BE INVOLVED IN SOCIAL BONDING, SOCIAL INTUITION, AND EMOTION REGULATION. The study by Maher et al. (2017) looked at the memory, psychological well-being and positive social relationships of SuperAgers – ‘adults over age 80 whose performance on tests of episodic memory, the type of memory that shows decline with aging and dramatic decline in Alzheimer’s dementia, is at least as good as individuals 20 to 30 years their junior.’ These SuperAgers were compared with a group of non-SuperAgers or ‘cognitively average-for-age’ adults. Researchers discovered that, while both groups of adults had high levels of psychological well-being, SuperAgers reported greater levels of positive social relationships compared with the cognitively average-for-age adults. Interestingly, SuperAgers have also been found to have a higher density of neurons in the part of the brain considered to be involved in social bonding, social intuition, and emotion regulation. Perhaps this is why SuperAgers have more positive relationships and perhaps it is these positive relationships that prevent their brain’s health declining.

We often hear about eating the right foods and having the right lifestyle habits to maintain good mental and physical health, but we don’t often hear medical professionals recommending a dose of friend-time once or twice a week. That would be my recommendation: friendtime, once or twice a week. People are powerful and if positive social relationships help us to prevent brain decline as we age and help prevent horrible conditions like dementia, then it’s important that we build our social skills in our younger days so that we can use them to our health’s advantage as we age. One thing is for sure, there are no guarantees about whose brain will decline quicker and who will contract a severe physical illness as they age but you can and should take preventative measures now. It is possible that these SuperAgers are SuperAgers because of positive friendships they’ve had in their younger days.

APPLICATION TO YOUR OWN LIFE

!

Have a think about where your social circle is taking you and how your current relationships are affecting you and your life. Here are some important questions for you:

* Do you have enough positive relationships in your (offline) social network? * Do you interact with them often enough? * Do you value and nurture your relationships as you should? * Do you allow negative, harmful relationships to remain for far longer than you deserve? Think deeply about these questions and take steps to ensure you have a social network that is compassionate, uplifting – and healthy; healthy for your physical brain and body and healthy for your mental health and well-being. People are powerful and in my new book, Resilient Me: How to Worry Less and Achieve More, I cover research that looks at how relationships can impact on our mental and physical health and our resilience to life’s obstacles and challenges and discuss what you need to do to ensure you are using people power to your advantage. People can be the source of our greatest pain and our deepest pleasure and they can help us heal and live longer and happier lives. The more we evolve in a technologically advancing world, the more we will likely crave and recognise the value even just one human being holds for another.

FREEZE YOUR FAT AWAY Many share the following experience: no matter how intense your workout or strict your diet, you can't seem to ditch that stubborn fat. We all have certain trouble areas where fat builds up and doesn't shed, despite our hardest efforts. Coolsculpting is the “hottest” solution in fat freezing technology, since it is the only brand approved by the FDA, the food and drug administration in the United States. Cirumed Clinic in Marbella is the national leader in Coolsculpting technology in Spain, being the only clinic with multiple Coolsculpting machines and a track record of hundreds of successful treatments. WHAT IS COOLSCULPTING®? Coolsculpting is the only FDA approved technology for removing fat without surgery by cryolypolysis, which means the freezing of fat cells. Developed by renowned scientists of Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital, the FDA-cleared procedure known as CoolSculpting® uses patented cooling technology to eliminate fat cells, without surgery, and little to no downtime. The reduction in fat cells in the treated area provides noticeable, and lasting results to help you look and feel your very best. WHAT DOES FDA APPROVAL MEAN EXACTLY? FDA stands for Food and Drug Administration and is the regulator for medical devices in the US. To achieve an FDA approval, a medical technology needs to demonstrate, within a radically strict review process, that it is both safe and effective. The FDA approval is what sets Coolsculpting apart from the variety of copycat technologies that have no or very little scientifically proven effect. “The FDA approval has made original Zeltiq Coolsculpting the undisputed market leader in the United States with over 1 million successful treatments already successfully completed by 2012,” says Jeannine Aslani, who is a graduate of the Zeltiq academy in London, where practitioners are trained in the optimal handling of Coolsculpting technology. HOW DOES COOLSCULPTING® WORK? Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than the cells of surrounding tissues. CoolSculpting® technology enables us to precisely target fat cells beneath the skin, and cool them to temperatures that trigger their natural death. Due to the fat cells crystallizing faster than normal cells, there is no damage to skin, nerves or any other surrounding tissue. Jeannine Aslani from Cirumed Clinic sees patients from all over Spain travelling to Marbella to get Coolsculpting treatment, she answers the most common questions around Coolsculpting for Essential readers: WHAT DOES COOLSCULPTING® FEEL LIKE? As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, you will feel pressure and intense cold. This soon dissipates. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap during their treatment.

WHEN WILL I SEE COOLSCULPTING® RESULTS? You may start to see changes as quickly as four weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after two months, and your body will continue to flush out fat cells for up to four to six months after the treatment. WHAT HAPPENS IF I GAIN WEIGHT DOWN THE ROAD? Many people, after seeing the results from their CoolSculpting procedure, are motivated to take even better care of themselves. However, if you do gain weight, you will most likely gain it evenly all over your body, not just in the treated areas. You will however have fewer fat cells in your treated areas, so most patients see increased tone in the treated areas, even after gaining weight. HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NECESSARY? Many see results after just one treatment, but others may need a few to reach their specific goals. A trained member of our staff will work with you to customize an appropriate plan during your initial consultation, in which treatment areas and the number of sessions will be determined. WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF THE PROCEDURE? Side effects are minor and rare, and can include temporary discomfort or numbness in the treated areas following the session. A complete list is covered during the consultation with a member of our staff. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE FROZEN FAT CELLS? After the fat cells are targeted and frozen, your body naturally and gradually expels them. They get processed and eliminated on their own over the course of six months. Unlike with diet and exercise, fat cells actually die and are permanently gone from your body with the CoolSculpting procedure. You'll literally freeze them away and be left with a toned, firm body!

Anyone familiar with the cast of The Only Way is Essex will remember Chloe Sims who is one of its major stars. learly, Chloe could have chosen any one of numerous clinics for this surgery, but thanks to fantastic reviews of the work at Cirumed and of Dr Aslani, she plumped for Marbella, a favourite destination with the TOWIE cast. She said: "I knew I would feel comfortable in the clinic, as I did a lot of research before committing.” It is also true that Dr. Aslani is well known in the UK for body contouring and bikini makeovers, which helped Chloe to make up her mind. Dr Aslani has been carrying out Brazilian butt lifts and ‘bikini package’ surgery (which involves body sculpting, a breast augmentation and a butt lift) for almost a decade. He started when few clinics offered the procedure, and this has undoubtedly helped him become a leader in buttock augmentation. He performs about three or four of these operations daily, indicating not just their popularity, but also the power of Dr Aslani’s reputation in this field. He regularly shares his expertise at international conferences and also hosts an international surgery course at Cirumed once a year, which is attended by surgeons from around the globe. On arrival at Cirumed, Chloe Sims was shown the clinic’s high tech standards and its new 1,300m2 building that is annexed to its original premises. ACHIEVING YOUR IDEAL BODY SHAPE PT.6

BICEPS AND TRICEPS As a natural follow on from last month’s tips for the shoulders, this time I’m going to focus on the arms, also known as the biceps (front of the upper arm) and the triceps (back of the upper arm).

42

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

You would be hard pushed to find a man out there that doesn’t like the idea of filling the sleeves of a summer t-shirt, so hopefully these tips will get you on the right track. Many of the multi-joint upper body exercises I’ve mentioned previously (presses, pulls and rows) heavily involve the arm muscles and will therefore already help to stimulate some growth. However, using targeted single joint exercises, such as those suggested below, affords the potential for stronger contractions and thus greater muscular growth. The biceps are made up of a short head and a long head; similarly, the triceps are made up of a long head, a medial head and a lateral head. The way you position the arm can affect the level of contribution from each head. I have provided suggestions to help maximise growth and symmetry of each head in both muscle groups. The incline dumbbell biceps curl : this exercise puts the long head of the biceps in a position for it to be maximally active as the top of the arm is extended slightly behind the body. To set this one up, lie on an incline bench (roughly set at 45 degrees) with your arms hanging either side and a dumbbell in each hand. Curl the dumbbells up towards the shoulders, minimizing forward movement at the elbow. Once you have reached full elbow flexion, lower the dumbbells under control back to the start position. Note – if you have a history of shoulder pain or injury it might be best to limit your exposure to this exercise. Dumbbell spider curls : this is a great option to stimulate the small head of the biceps and build a nice peak to the front of the upper arm. The set-up also uses an incline bench, except this time you lie with your chest down at the top of the bench with your legs straddling it. Holding dumbbells in each hand let your arms hang and curl the dumbbells up towards your shoulders. Then lower them under control back to the start position. The big advantage with this exercise is the constant tension in the muscles throughout, which peaks at the top of the movement.

'THE WAY YOU POSITION THE ARM CAN AFFECT THE LEVEL OF CONTRIBUTION FROM EACH HEAD. I HAVE PROVIDED SUGGESTIONS TO HELP MAXIMISE GROWTH AND SYMMETRY OF EACH HEAD IN BOTH MUSCLE GROUPS' Half kneeling dumbbell triceps extension : this exercise not only provides a great stimulus for the long head of the triceps, it also calls for a lot of total body stability and a strong set of abs. Set up kneeling on your left knee, with your right foot out in front of you. Using both hands, hold a dumbbell at one end behind your head so your elbows are pointing up. Push the weight up with both arms until your elbows lock out. As your hands go up, you need to use your abs and glutes to keep the ribs from flaring up and the lower back from extending. Lower the weight back down under control to complete a repetition. Tall kneeling rope push downs : the medial and lateral heads of the triceps are more active during movements in which the arms are held at the sides of the body. Most push down variations will therefore work well for these parts of the muscle. However, a traditional standing rope push down is often poorly executed, especially when too much weight is used. And when form is lost, you lose tension in the muscle and put stress on the elbows and shoulders. Therefore, going to a tall kneeling position (down on both knees, tall at the hips) and using a slightly longer rope will allow you to hold your torso position better and increase the range of motion. This, in turn, will increase the amount of tension you can create at the bottom of the movement which will help to stimulate more growth.

All four of these exercises will work well with the set and rep scheme from previous months. If you do two upper body sessions a week you can pair these exercises (one triceps with one biceps) and use them as a superset at the end of each upper body session: Week 1 3x8 (72reps/session, 144reps/week). Week 2 3x 10 (90reps/session, 180reps/week). Week 3 3x12 (108reps/session, 216reps/week). Week 4 (deload week), 2x10 (60reps/ session, 120reps/week). Then repeat the cycle for next four weeks, aiming to add small increases to the weights used (don’t miss any reps though!) Aim to include these exercises into your training schedule twice each week.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mind-blowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

Since Peaky Blinders first hit our screens in 2013, the Shelby boys have been captivating the British public – and how we love them. Cillian Murphy's portrayal of a slickly-dressed gang lord continues to influence both the high street and designer fashion and of course the ‘Peaky Blinders effect’ can be seen in male grooming. This month Jonathan takes a look at why everyone is asking for a Peaky at the hair salon.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Feeling a little peaky? Every single period in history has been fabulous in its own right. Glamour has always been there, it’s just more obvious at certain times than others. Part of being human is wanting to look the best we can, given the tools at our disposal. Whether it’s during a war, whether you’re working class or a gangster, trends will always be made and style will always be found. Peaky Blinders takes us from the end of the First World War, elegantly swerving past the influenza pandemic which killed more people than the war did. The show captures the dawn of a new age and

the slick look, a product called Brilliantine was used. It was oil based, giving off a slimy residue to anything it touched. The men who were really short of a bob or two would use cheaper petroleum jelly instead of the luxurious brilliantine. It did the job, although it was a mess to clean up. During this period women would knit lace doilies to cover the backs of high backed chairs and couches and protect the furniture from men’s greasy heads. I remember my Nan used to crochet her antimacassars to protect her precious threepiece suite from the Co-Op.

Pulling off a ONE OF MY LONG-STANDING FRIENDS Tommy RECOGNISED THE INFLUENCE THAT PEAKY WAS GOING TO HAVE AFTER If you are going to attempt to WATCHING THE FIRST SERIES AND BEGAN pull off one of the Shelby do’s please bear in mind that, if not TO STOCK UP ON THESE KEY ITEMS. styled properly, you are going to among the fist-fighting, crime-committing, and general outrageous laddish behaviour, one thing's for certain - the Shelby boys sure know how to get suited and booted.

look like you are two paces away from a workhouse or auditioning for a part in Fagin’s gang. Let’s just say this look isn’t going to work with a tracky and Rebook classics.

One of the most distinctive looks of Peaky Blinders is the hair. It’s being worn by hipsters and celebrities alike - and on both boys and girls. Hair stylists around the world have given the Peaky do a contemporary twist, making it one of the most popular hairstyles to hit our streets in years.

Thomas Shelby - The texturised crop

Making history Based on First World War haircuts, which had very shaved sides and backs since the hair covered by the helmet didn’t matter. It was an extreme look and was largely associated with workingclass men. This style was ideal for men who couldn't afford a barber skilled enough to blend their haircuts skilfully. During the early 19th century there wasn’t the vast array of products which we have access to nowadays, so to get

The texturised crop is short on the back and sides of the head with a slightly longer length on top. Obviously, we aren’t all born with Tommy’s cheekbones, but to carry off this style a defined face is needed - or even an oval face will do at a pinch.

Suited 'n' booted From tweed baker boy caps, tailored threepiece suits and smart buttoned-up shirts everyone from David Beckham to Idris Elba seems to be dipping into the Shelby style. One of my long-standing friends recognised the influence that Peaky was going to have after watching the first series and began to stock up on these key items. H&L Fashions is an independent fashion shop in Haworth, West Yorkshire in the UK. Selling a wide range of men’s tweed suits and ladies’ fashions they have seen the influence that Peaky Blinders has had on fashion first hand. The shop has been selling tweed style suits for several years, its Bronte Country location lending itself ideally to this look. But Peaky Blinders has meant a real uptake of interest in men’s suits and overcoats, from providing suits for PB themed weddings to supplying bar staff uniforms with the full Peaky look, the girls at H&L have seen it all. It seems that at last men's fashion has a definite look that is proving universal and not age specific! Customers are coming in thinking of a simple jacket/waistcoat combination and ending up wanting the full look, complete with accessories, so H&L Fashions now offers a Peaky Package suit, hat, tie/dickie bow, braces, armbands and pocket watch.

Styling: start with your hair washed and free from product, pump around five to six times using a Redken Fashion Waves sea salt spray into your hair, then start to dry your hair using your fingers in random circular motions to help create that messy look. Once the hair is dry, give it a once over with the cold setting on your hairdryer. Dust some Redken Powder Grip into the roots of your hair. Have a play around with your hair until you’re happy, then spray Redken Triple Take 32 hairspray in to create that final texture.

We love experimenting with different ways to show you fashion. This month we conducted an entire fashion editorial with the iPhone X. Yes, an iPhone! It's not the first time the iPhone's camera has been used in a big way. Not only has Apple utilized iPhone photography for its own ad campaigns, but other fashion brands have as well. Burberry used an iPhone to capture its entire Spring/Summer runway show. Fashion magazines Elle Australia, Vogue USA and Allure have joined the ranks of Billboard and Conde Nast’s Traveller by becoming the first magazines in the genre to shoot a cover and editorial using a cell phone camera.

Of course, sportswear is not only trendy, but also very practical. This influences our mindset in a very positive way, as some studies show that wearing your favourite gym clothes can motivate you to work out and succeed. You are far more likely to get started on your daily set of exercises if you’re already dressed for it. We all need that extra little dose of motivation on some days, don’t we? This trend of wellness and comfort is awesome, and we’re all for it.

We attended…

The Super League’s second event of 2018 at the Rio Real course. It was a wonderfully sunny day for the 100 golfers taking part, considering it was February and the course was in immaculate condition, although a little challenging for some.

We enjoyed…

The always welcome Gin & Tonic bar during play and the after-play refreshments at La Sala, which as always were delicious.

We applauded…

All the players, but a special congratulations goes to the individual winner Alex Yamelichau with a very impressive 41 points and the team winners ‘Gn3 off the Tee’ who had a great round with 87 points.

Congratulations and a big thank you to…

The La Sala team and sponsors: HiFx, Jackson Grundy and The Heights. The Paddy’s Day tournament will take place at Los Flamingos on 17th March For more information contact Lindsey Medina on +34 603507628 or lindsey@salagroupholdings.com

Marbella, Marbella, Marbella. The real estate market on the Costa del Sol is going from strength to strength, yet one constant fact remains – it’s all about the location.

T

he Marbella property market has been plagued in recent years due to the annulment of its General Urban Planning regulations (PGOU), which have only been reinstated. One of the effects of this was a slow down in granting building licences for new construction in the Marbella area at a time when buyer demand was increasing. As a result, major investors, who are typically always in a hurry to reap the rewards of their investments, looked to other areas of the coast where they could get planning approval through without a wait. It may appear that these new areas, where new developments are springing up at a rapid pace, are the new most desirable

LA MERIDIANA SUITES, Golden Mile

70

locations, but this is not strictly true. Any buyer looking for a property on the Costa del Sol now, should be aware that things are not always as they seem and are advised to do their research into the market conditions.

Supply vs demand What we are currently seeing is an over supply of property in some areas with a corresponding slowing down in sales. Eventually, we can expect that prices will not rise as predicted by developers and promoters. Many of these off plan new properties have been purchased by investors and most likely will all come

THE COLLECTION, Golden MIle

together as re-sale on the market when completed. And those buyers who are not first in will discover that the resale potential is also reduced due to the high supply.

“LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION – THIS HAS BEEN THE NAME OF THE GAME EVERYWHERE AND ALWAYS, NOT ONLY IN MARBELLA. YOU’LL NEVER LOSE MONEY IF THE LOCATION IS RIGHT,” Marbella, on the other hand, offers an exceptional opportunity for buyers and sellers who take an educated

Keep it Real

approach to the local property market. As Smadar Kahana of Engel & Völkers in Marbella says: “location, location, location – this has been the name of the game everywhere and always, not only in Marbella. You’ll never lose money if the location is right,” and in her view, Marbella is in the unique position of being a location where buyers can always be sure to keep the value of their investment and, with the right product, also make gains. She pointed out that the lack of newish properties has meant that demand is outstripping supply in the Marbella area, which takes in the wider area stretching from Cabopino in the east to Nueva Andalucia in the west. “Properties in prime locations that come on to the market in Marbella are like a precious jewel due to the shortage of luxury properties,” Smadar remarked. And,

because of this, Marbella properties hold their price and sell faster than other areas, although the price has to be right and the presentation as well.

AT ENGEL & VÖLKERS WE TAKE PROPERTIES TO MARKET AT THE RIGHT PRICE WITH A FULL RESPONSIBILITY TO THE SELLER THAT WE CAN SELL FOR THE HIGHEST MARKET PRICE “When I look at the escrituras for resale properties from our portfolio, I can confidently tell you that our clients have not lost money on any purchase in any prime location in Marbella. And when the property, new or old is coming on the market on the right price, it will sell in a reasonable time frame."

The Marbella Market Currently, the Marbella market is split into three sectors: A limited off-plan market because of the lack of a PGOU and building licences Older properties that are being bought for complete refurbishment A traditional resale market Smadar commented, “Because of the low number of new developments in Marbella, compared with some other areas on the coast, the newest properties you find are properties built in say the period 2003 -2005, and only few newest. Most of the buyers arriving right now are looking for modern, newish properties in the contemporary

design and with the latest techniques and trendiest materials, and there aren’t enough available to satiate the demand. However, the market is currently offering another solution. We see many investors and funds buying the older properties and completely refurbishing them. This does not mean giving them a quick coat of white paint everywhere, but with an overhaul of the entire interior using top quality materials and modern design. This typically includes rebuilding the walls and installing all new electrics and pipes, as well as updating the floors, bathrooms and just about everything else. One of the advantages of this approach is that it doesn’t require full building permission, but only a licence to refurbish, which is granted much quicker, providing the work stays within the original footprint of the plot on the escritura. The result is a win-win for both seller and buyer, because these ‘modernised older

ELVIRIA, Sea views

72

properties’ offer beautiful new homes and sell fast, as well as satisfying the desire for a contemporary residence of high quality finish.

Advice for buyers Smadar, as well as the whole E&V team advises buyers to look carefully at a property when buying. Smadar isn’t referring to simply viewing the property, but looking at the location with an eye to eventual resale, as well as recent sales in that area. One question buyers should always ask is: is the price right for the area? “Unfortunately, we are seeing a fair amount of overpricing of re-sale houses happening in Marbella,” Smadar remarked, “and while sellers think it’s wonderful to be given a €7.5 million valuation on a property that should really be valued at €4.5 million, they then find that it just won’t sell.”

This is not a new practice, more is it confined to Marbella, but it does have a negative effect on the property market.

"SELLERS SHOULD CONSIDER AN AGENT’S EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE IN SELLING PROPERTIES IN THAT LOCATION AS WELL AS THEIR OVERALL PERFORMANCE IN PROPERTY SALES, MARKETING AND THEIR REAL ABILITY TO SELL." Smadar said: “At Engel & Völkers we take properties to market at the right price with a full responsibility to the seller that we can sell for the highest market price, however, we are not magicians! Every property has a market value and buyers will not pay more."

Keep it Real

ELVIRIA Contemporary luxury villa with sea views 5 Bedrooms · 4 Bathrooms 1.830.000€

Engel & Völker’s success in the Marbella market also relies on its specific method of property valuation, which is used by every E&V office worldwide. The firm believes in getting the best possible price, but never a price that will result in a property sitting unsold for sometimes years. Added to this, Engel & Völkers have the advantage of a well developed buyer database, which ensures the greater likelihood of a swift sale and this is something that a real estate agent who has opened an office overnight, just doesn’t have access to. “Real estate agents need to be more responsible in their valuations and not over value just to get the property on their portfolio. Sellers should consider an agent’s experience and expertise in selling properties in that location as well as their overall performance in property sales, marketing and their real ability to sell.”

DUE TO THE CURRENT CHANGES IN THE TOWN HALL, BUILDING LICENCES ARE NOW COMING THROUGH QUICKER AND NEW, CONTEMPORARY DEVELOPMENTS, SUCH AS LA MERIDIANA SUITES, THE COLLECTION AND SOME MORE WILL SOON HAVE THEIR LICENCES AND CONSTRUCTION WILL START. To sum up, when looking at where to best invest in property, Marbella and its prime locations is still a winner. Due to the current changes in the town hall, building licences are now coming through quicker and new, contemporary developments, such as

La Meridiana Suites, The Collection and some more will soon have their licences and construction will start. However, there are only a handful of properties still available in these developments, signalling the strong buyer interest. “We have many international clients searching for a property in Marbella but just cannot find what they are looking for,” Smadar concluded, “most of them are really searching for a luxury new apartment or house with modern design and the highest standard but don’t see Estepona or Mijas as an alternative; they definably want to stay here, in Marbella, in the best location."

IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK By Rita van Dijk, Owner of VILLA 25

This month, we’re exploring some of the different ways in which we can dress our walls and truly transform our spaces. Each and every room is made up of four walls. Fact. Yet, so often, we mistakenly think that all a wall needs is a splash of paint and we can call it a day. But paint is only the beginning. Think of your walls as the largest, most important blank canvas in your space. A rich coat of paint is the backdrop to the potential masterpiece you can and should create with your walls. The possibilities are endless, and the only limitation is, as always, our imagination.

80

T

hink of walls as a bonus space to take a design to the next level. While keeping the anchor pieces more monochromatic, we can elevate the mood through the wall pieces and accents we select. Use it as a way of introducing new or additional colour into your space or updating a neutral, timeless palette with a more on-trend look and feel. Never underestimate the power your walls have because our eyes naturally drift upward, and you want them to settle on an element that is striking and memorable.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER YOUR WALLS HAVE BECAUSE OUR EYES NATURALLY DRIFT UPWARD, AND YOU WANT THEM TO SETTLE ON AN ELEMENT THAT IS STRIKING AND MEMORABLE.

Home Couture

THINK OF YOUR WALLS AS THE LARGEST, MOST IMPORTANT BLANK CANVAS IN YOUR SPACE.... A BONUS SPACE TO TAKE A DESIGN TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

Hanging up some wall art and/ or pictures is the most popular design path to take and it’s the perfect opportunity to layer and create a cohesive aesthetic as well as an ideal way of injecting mood and drama. Look beyond the typical and explore your artistic sensibilities. All art is subjective so all that matters is how it makes you feel and the role it will play in the space it exists in. Lastly, consider the placement. Will it be scattered or structured; matching frames hung symmetrically or an eclectic mix at varying heights? Perhaps you have one hero piece that will be your focal point with the others playing a supporting role. If you cannot visualise the placement in your head, hold it up against your wall or lay it out on your floor and play around with it until it feels right.

81

Home Couture

If art and pictures are too predictable and you’re looking to make more of a statement, then the sky’s the limit. From oversized wall clocks and mirrors to dramatic wall sconces and ancient doors, if it can be hung, why not? The design world we are living in today doesn’t live and die by the rules. In fact, there are no rules. As long as you create a space that reflects you and the life that you are going to live in it, you’ve succeeded.

IF IT CAN BE HUNG, WHY NOT? THE DESIGN WORLD WE ARE LIVING IN TODAY DOESN’T LIVE AND DIE BY THE RULES. IN FACT, THERE ARE NO RULES.

Wallpaper has come a long way from the days it lined your grandmother’s walls. Today’s wallpaper has transcended its humble, stuffy beginnings and is now the pièce de résistance in any space. From made-to-measure, evocative murals to textured fabric paper and beyond, your entire wall can now be a magnificent showstopper. Artists and designers are constantly pushing the limits on what can be accomplished, and the result is paper that is a work of art in and of itself. The right paper can set the tone for the rest of the space and serve either as a grounding element that ties the design together or as a springboard from which the space is born. Either way, wallpaper can make or break a room.

WALLPAPER CAN MAKE OR BREAK A ROOM

Remember when our adventures in design didn’t extend beyond painting one wall a different colour from the rest? That is not what we mean here. Like everything else in today’s world of design, we are talking next level feature walls. From a wood panelled or rock wall to plastered and live walls, a feature wall needs to command the space and be the perfect focal backdrop to the rest of your design aesthetic. ‘Feature’ by definition means something that it is distinctive and stands out from the rest. So think big. Think dramatic. Think outside the box. Whatever your design style and taste, your walls are there to be adorned and adored. By using your walls as the fertile design ground that they are, you will discover that you invite elements into your space without it feeling cluttered and over-styled. Whatever direction you decide to take, conservative or provocative, just have fun with it and create a space that you will love! All products featured as well as all design services can be provided by Villa 25 in Costabella Marbella. To find out more, call 952 93 93 00 or visit villa25decor.com

MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE LAMBORGHINI HURACÁN SUPER TROFEO EVO

96

TORQUE TALK

FLAT OUT AT IMOLA IN LAMBO’S 2018 RACECAR

T

he 2018 Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO has 600kg of downforce at 200km/h. Let that sink in for a minute. That is around half the weight of this one make championship racecar whose oily bits are not too different from those of the Huracán road car.

I just love the power assisted steering on this car. Its feel and feedback has a very high level of precision, as well as perfect weighting that means running stints in a distance race would be quite comfortable. In fact you don’t think about it, which is always a good sign.

That amount of downforce and slick tyres give the EVO immense grip in fast corners, and gave me the confidence to take the left hand kink near the end of the pit straight at Imola with my right foot flat on the floor in sixth.

The handling is predictable and progressive, with a pointy front end and commensurately solid tracking at the rear on turn-in. This is a car whose handling holds no surprises for the unwary unless you do something silly like coming off the throttle suddenly in a tight bend at low speeds where your aero is not working to help the car stay glued to the tarmac.

Just before I gently guided the small aircraft style steering wheel slightly left and felt the lateral g-force rock the car slightly on turn-in I registered the big number 275km/h flash on the instrument pack out of the corner of my eye. Three seconds later it was time to really stand on the brakes and pull the left paddle of the sequential gearbox three times to engage third before trail braking into the medium left hander. Wow!

Unlike the turbocharged cars that run in the GT Championships, the high revving V10 does not dump a mountain of torque on the rear wheels at low revs that can so easily unhinge the rear, especially in the wet.

97

TORQUE TALK

THE BIG CONFIDENCE WINDOW THIS CAR EXUDES COMES FROM THE FACT THAT IT CLEARLY TELEGRAPHS BOTH WHAT IT IS DOING AND WHAT IT IS ABOUT TO DO. Even so, the Lambo’s V10 motor has more than enough grunt to provoke power oversteer coming out of slower bends. But because the throttle action is so progressive and well calibrated, you can meter in exactly the number of horses for the occasion, which means if something goes awry it will be pilot error. The odd time the EVO stepped out at the rear – on slower bends where the aero is less effective – I had it back on line instantly with an instinctive flick of the wrists. I knew then I could trust the feeling through the seat of my pants with this car. And that soundtrack! The naturally aspirated motor sounds like silk ripping when it reaches the top end of its working range. It is a far more spine tingling experience than any flatplane crank V8, and is only matched for sheer aural by the deep basso profundo of the Corvette GT3’s bent crank V8 and the AMG GTs that run in GT3 and GT4.

98

Later, back in the pits I went through the telemetry with one of the race engineers and found that I had been pulling 1.67 g lateral acceleration through some of the bends. As expected my times had tumbled with each lap as I got used to the car and the track. On my fourth lap the telemetry recorded 1.55 min, about 10 sec off the pace of the professional drivers battling it out in the Super Trofeo World Final races that bracketed my test session. Knowing that I had to hand the car back in one piece, I was running at about 95% of the cars and my own capabilities. But because the EVO gave me so much confidence, I felt very comfortable at that pace, working out the best line to take for a few of the bends in order to up my game further on the next lap. Shaving off the next five or six seconds would not be difficult given another ten or so laps to experiment, which sadly I did not have. But beyond

that, matching the pace of the championship drivers who had been racing their cars for a whole season, and thus knew them intimately, would not be easy. However, the big confidence window this car exudes comes from the fact that it clearly telegraphs both what it is doing and what it is about to do. That is why its user friendly set-up is so good for the gentlemen drivers in this championship who like myself, do not have those last few percentage points of raw talent possessed by the true professionals paid a lot of money to win. Speaking of money, one of Lamborghini’s aims is to keep costs down as much as possible so the car stays mechanically unchanged from the 2017 car. The new EVO bodywork bolts more or less straight onto the existing cars, with the only change to the mounting system being where the fasteners at the rear of the new engine cover are now more securely affixed to a lateral cross member. Maurizio Reggiani, Chief Technical Officer of Automobili Lamborghini, explained that the revisions to the aero package took a year to design and develop with the aid of Dallara, who aid Lamborghini with all their racecars.

TORQUE TALK

“Part of our ethos is to fix the specification of our cars for three years to minimise costs for the teams,” he said. “Thus, the original Super Trofeo cars were current for three years, and now the Super Trofeo EVO spec will be current until the 2021 season, when we will have something new.” “Naturally, we had a lot of input from our customers who race these cars and are therefore very familiar with the existing model. The specification wish list we received from them was very precise.” The result is a car that looks like a proper racing car rather than an adapted road going supercar. Overall downforce is the same as the outgoing model, something the gentlemen drivers in the series are less concerned about than the professionals. But drag has been reduced and this improved aerodynamic efficiency allows the car to accelerate faster at high speeds. Thus, the EVO is about 1.5 sec a lap faster at Monza on the same engine power.

The aerodynamic balance over the front and rear axles was also altered, making the EVO more predictable in fast bends when you are in 4th gear upwards. While the car is mechanically the same as before, the aerodynamic loadings are more stable on either side. All this is very important as some rounds of the Super Trofeo series are run on some Formula 1 race tracks, and therefore aero and downforce are critical. In terms of top speed, the cars are electronically limited to 280km/h, but as already noted, this is now reached more quickly thanks to the lower drag of the revised bodywork. The Super Trofeo series was designed to that cars would be changed at three years as they wore out, but the modular bodywork means that teams with newer cars can simply upgrade to the latest EVO bodywork. Incidentally, a new Super Trofeo EVO costs 235,000 euro plus tax. The question was asked how the Super Trofeo EVO compares with the GT3 car, which we tested the year before.

THE LAMBO’S V10 MOTOR HAS MORE THAN ENOUGH GRUNT TO PROVOKE POWER OVERSTEER COMING OUT OF SLOWER BENDS.

“The chassis of the GT3 is more advanced, more towards a pure race car,” said Maurizio. “Powerwise, the GT3 has 550-570hp (depending on the balance of performance formula) compared to 620hp for the Super Trofeo car.” The racecar shares about 70% of its parts with the road car. The basic chassis structure is the same as is the engine, which is linked to a six-speed racing sequential gearbox. All the electronics are bespoke as is the ECU, and there are features like variable traction control and ABS settings that are unique to the racecar. The ram air from the roof mounted air scoop feeds the engine through a bespoke carbon-fibre intake system and is worth an extra 3% in terms of torque at high speed. At the other end, a bespoke exhaust system with low backpressure racing catalytic converters produces a different sound from the street version. “The difference is that the street car has an exhaust sound flap and external catalysts, while the race exhaust incorporates the cat into the silencer, which saves time and money when you have to disassemble drivetrain parts in a race environment,” said Maurizio. Where the showroom stock Huracán has 4WD, with only the 580-2 model being rear-driven, the rear-drive Super Trofeo uses the 580-2 rear axle with some small modifications and fully adjustable race springs with Ohlins dampers. As a racecar it runs 3° negative camber front and rear to aid turn in and stability, and to get the slick tyres working properly.

"AND THAT SOUNDTRACK! THE NATURALLY ASPIRATED MOTOR SOUNDS LIKE SILK RIPPING WHEN IT REACHES THE TOP END OF ITS WORKING RANGE. " “Making a user friendly racecar” was the premise on which this Super Trofeo EVO championship car was built, and the team of engineers and professional drivers who dialled in the set-up are to be congratulated on a job well done. LAMBORGHINI SQUADRA CORSE As well as being an effective image builder, Lamborghini’s Squadra Corse customer race division is a profitable business. The Huracán Super Trofeo and GT3 cars were rolled out in 2015.

104

Lamborghini CEO, Stefano Dominicali is passionate about motorsport, which has helped the company take things to the next level. “We have over 40 cars racing in Europe alone with strong contingents in the US, Australia and Asia too. Our aim is to put 30 car on the grid in other countries too,” he told us. “For the 2018 season we expect to have around 40 cars in Europe, 25 in the US and 20 in Asia.”

TORQUE TALK

The 2018 Super Trofeo season starts on 2-3 February with rounds in the Middle East at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi, followed by two races in Dubai February 16-17, and March 2-3. The new bodywork is not compulsory until the European, US and Asian rounds. “It is a big responsibility to improve and strengthen Super Trofeo,” Maurizio explained. “Because the cars share a lot with the production Huracán there is real technology transfer going on from our race cars back to the road car, and in fact the race cars come off the same production line at our factory before being taken to one side and prepared as a Super Trofeo or GT3 racecar.” We build one race car a day, so six per week.” When I drove the Super Trofeo EVO at Imola in November last year 50% of the 2018 allocation had already been sold. “Things move very quickly in the motorsport world, and we have to be geared up to react with speed and professionalism to support our customer teams with spare parts and technical support,” Maurizio continued.

The Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo series has been very successful and exciting with the drivers clearly upping their game with each season. The good thing for more ambitious customer teams is that the specification of the car qualifies it for entry in other championships too. “In 2017 12 cars were entered in the Italian GT Championship, six in the China GT Championship, with others contesting the VLN in Germany, and a Huracán Super Trofeo won the 2017 Pirelli Championship in Las Vegas, said Maurizio. “As a promoter, we try to give our customer teams the very best chance of a podium finish.” A prime example of this is the first and third places scored in the GTD category of the 2018 Daytona 24 Hours by the Huracán GT3s of the Grasser Racing Team and Paul Miller Racing Team respectively. Lamborghini Squadra Corse and its clients kick off the 2018 season on a high note.

WHAT PRICE THE

NHS?

In 1454 Henry VI of England lay gravely ill. He had been on the throne since the age of eight. Five doctors attended the ailing monarch. His diet was strictly controlled. As he had been “melancholy” for a number of years, milk was prescribed, but hazelnuts were strictly forbidden on the grounds that they “discomforted” the brain. Green ginger, however, was most efficacious in aiding memory, and certainly worked in the king’s case, as when the Prince of Wales came to visit him it was reported, he “thanked God thereof. And said he never knew him till that time, nor knew what was being said to him, nor knew where he had been whilst he was sick”. He had been lucky to be able to ascend the throne at such an early age. During the Middle Ages a third of boys and a quarter of girls died at birth, or shortly after. It was for this reason that baptism was considered so vitally important, as without it the infant would be denied the bliss of heaven, and be consigned to limbo. In extremis, the midwife was allowed to baptise, if necessary cutting the child out of the womb if the mother showed signs of expiring. Many mothers did, in fact, die in childbirth or shortly after, as did Queen Jane Seymour after the birth of Edward VI. As queen she would have had the best medical attention available, with the birth room warm and dark and scented with rose petals. Henry VIII, like all men, was not permitted to witness the birth. Many men, however, participated in the hopefully happy event by mimicking the birth of an infant by opening a box or firing an arrow into the air.

106

The world into which the infant arrived was far from the world of the British National Health Service. Having said that, it is apparent that in cases of diabetes, anaemia, sinusitis, leprosy, tuberculosis and osteoarthritis, the proportion of people suffering from such conditions was no larger in the 15th century than it is the 21st. Doctors were available, but, as their nickname of “Leeches” suggests, their methods were somewhat rudimentary. The nickname was also apposite given the fact that their fees were large! An example of a doctor’s training may be seen from the advice given to medical students by John of Arderne, one of the most famous doctors of the 14th century. He maintained that a student should learn “good proverbs pertaining to his craft in comforting of patients. Also it speedeth that a leech can talk of good and honest tales that may make the patients to laugh, as well as of the Bible and other tragedies”. Clearly he had an excellent bedside manner, but it is equally clear that under his care laughter may indeed have been the best medicine. Other medicines were not quite so efficacious. Medical treatment was based either on folklore, or following the precepts of Claudius Galenus (130-210AD), known in English as Galen, a prominent Greek physician, surgeon and philosopher. (Although it must be said that to this day medical science has often proved his theories right!)

THE ENGLISH TROOPS THEN MARCHED TOWARDS LISBON. AN OUTBREAK OF DISEASE, COUPLED WITH A MASSIVE HANGOVER, DIMINISHED THE FORCE CONSIDERABLY. Just as the universe is based on the four elements of earth, water, air and fire, so it was said, so is the human body based on four “humours”; phlegmatic, choleric, sanguine and melancholy. Good health was the result of maintaining a healthy balance between them. There are echoes here of homeopathy; a system of alternative medicine created in 1796 by Samuel Hahnemann, based on his doctrine of “like cures like” (similia similibus curentur). For example, a melancholy man should avoid eating venison, which comes from a timid creature, and fear augments the melancholy humour. A choleric man should avoid highly spiced food, which may excite the blood. But coupled with this theory, leeches often reverted to actual interventions. For a toothache the mouth was held open and a piece of mutton fat was burned in front of it to encourage the “worms” to fall out. If a man had the stone, a mash of beetles and crickets was applied to the affected part. (This was perhaps preferable to the “cure” suggested to the Reformer John Calvin (1509-1554AD) when he was instructed to ride horses at a gallop in order to crush the stone. It resulted in agony.) For tonsillitis, the cure was slightly more complicated.“Take a fat cat, skin it, draw out the guts and take the grease of a hedgehog and the fat of a bear…All this crumble small and stuff the cat, roast it whole and gather the grease and anoint the patient therewith”.

It is hardly surprising to learn that the majority of people never saw a leech throughout their lives. They relied upon the herbs and nostrums supplied by the local “wise woman”. There were indeed “hospitals”, but these were staffed by monks and nuns who often felt that if an illness was sent by God, it would be impious to seek to cure it. But in many cases patients were cured, if only through the rest and care afforded by such institutions. And in hospitals saintly intervention was at hand. Saint Blaise watched over your throat, Saint Martin your itches. Saint Simon Cleophas took care of the top joint of the second finger of your right hand, while the second joint of the third finger of the left hand was the speciality of Saint Bartholomew (we find consultants even among the saints!) Often Leeches combined their earthly “cures” with religious invocations. To cure an insipient eye cataract, the marrow from the great bone of a goose wing should be mingled with the juice of the red honeysuckle plucked “with the saying of nine paternosters, nine aves, and the creed. But in spite of all this, some people managed to live fairly long lives. Between 1350 and 1500 it is estimated that 30% of the House of Lords was over 60, and 10% were over 70. What is the percentage today?!

Best Beach IN SHOW?

We all love a good beach, don’t we? Come on, admit it – if we weren’t just a little bit obsessed with the sun, sand and surf lifestyle we wouldn’t be living on the Costa del Sol. Of course, we always look forward to hearing about which beaches are considered the best in the world and the holiday experts at Trip Advisor have had a tough time deciding on their Top 10 this year. We have had a good look at the pictures and reckon that this lot are good enough to appear on anyone’s bucket list.

108

10. PLAYA NORTE

Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Mexico hasn’t had the best press lately, with the toppling of some key drug cartel bosses creating a power vacuum and initiating an era of what Alex and his droogs from A Clockwork Orange would most likely describe as “the old ultraviolence”. Acapulco, once a location that evoked glamour, is now a no-go zone, with murders happening daily and the old tourist hotspots virtually abandoned. Isla Mujeres, however, is an entirely different kettle of fish; located less than 10 miles from the Yucatán Peninsula this small island has everything that you could possibly require from a relaxed, sunshine holiday. Including this fabulous stretch of sand.

9. BAVARO BEACH

Dominican Republic. This place looks totally amazing and, what’s more, it’s the perfect place for that last-minute holiday, since the weather is ‘scorchio’ all year round. Sharing the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, the Dominican Republic has retained its popularity as a friendly, relaxed holiday destination, which is not surprising when it’s possible to enjoy beaches like this.

8. SEVEN MILE BEACH

Nigril, Jamaica. Jamaica is another country that offers excellent year-round holiday opportunities to sun-starved Europeans. Seven Mile Beach, located in the far west, has long been one of this vibrant and exciting island’s main attractions and it’s easy to see why. Whether you fancy swimming in the Caribbean Sea or just longing on a sunlounger then there are many worse places than Seven Mile Beach.

109

6 7. CLEARWATER BEACH

Clearwater, Florida. As the home of Walt Disney World and the Kennedy Space Center among other attractions, Florida has the reputation of being a great, family-friendly holiday destination – and who are we to disagree? When your feet are steaming from trekking around all those theme parks, however, why not make your way to Clearwater where this jaw-dropping beach awaits? The Trip Advisor bods were practically salivating over the “sugar sand” so it’s likely that the Clearwater hotels will be booked up this holiday season.

6. LA CONCHA BEACH

San Sebastian, Spain. Hooray! So good to see that Spain deservedly features in this list of the very best. Gorgeous golden sand, plenty of topgrade accommodation and restaurants plus plenty to see and do – you can’t go wrong. Unlike many of the more exotic locations featured in the Trip Advisor Top 10, La Concha is best visited from May until September.

5. SEVEN MILE BEACH

Grand Cayman. Same name as Beach Number Eight but a different location. This Seven Mile Beach is located on Grand Cayman and is the part of the island most dedicated to tourism, with a decent selection of luxury hotels and five-star restaurants. George Town, the Caymans’ capital, lies directly to the south of this beautiful strip of sand, so there is plenty to see and do when you tire of relaxing in the sun.

110

4. EAGLE BEACH

Aruba. A favourite holiday destination for Venezuela’s wealthy beautiful people, this gorgeous island is actually a constituent country of the Netherlands. The combination of fun-loving Venezuelans teamed with the relaxed, laissez-faire attitude of the Dutch has created a wonderful place to get away from it all, not to mention stonkingly gorgeous beaches like this. Now, which is the cheapest way of getting there?

3. VARADERO BEACH

Cuba. Cuba, Cuba, Cuba, what’s not to love about you? The fabulously friendly locals, the beauty and style of Havana and this large Caribbean island is also one of the best places in the world to enjoy a memorable beach break. Just book your ticket, turn up and be prepared to feel the gorgeous white sand between your toes. Just one question – when you’ve booked your ticket can we tag along?

2. BAIA DO SANCHO

Fernando de Noronha, Brazil. Brazil, like Cuba, is one of those places that pretty much guarantees a good time, whether you’re thinking of attending Rio’s world-famous carnival or planning a relaxed beach holiday in Fernando de Noronha. This glorious archipelago of 21 islands and islets is located off Brazil’s ‘nose’ and, in 2001 was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its environmental importance. We say, forget all that – just look at this beach!

1.GRACE BAY

1

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. Providenciales is an island in the north-west Caicos Islands and is the perfect place for an indulgent beach holiday. Grace Bay is eight breath-taking kilometres of silver sand leading into sea so blue it hurts the eyes. “Straight out of a postcard!” rave the members of the Trip Advisor panel and who can blame them? Grace Bay should be renamed Amazing Grace Bay. Those looking for a cheap and cheerful holiday need not apply, but for those who have the dosh, this must be the best place to get away from all the pressures of life. Save us a sun-bed, please.

SOAK Your Nuts, Seeds & Grains

-

-

Bettina, our resident healthy travel foodie, will give us tips on hidden gems in places across the globe. Food has become such a big part of travel that people will spend hours scouring the best places to stay and eat. Here are some insider tips.

W

hen entering ‘plant based’ or ‘free from’ as in ‘allergenfree heaven’ there is a whole new jungle of information on how to do things. One of those methods you will stumble across is soaking (activating) nuts, seeds and grains and pulses. The soaking process makes nuts more digestible and removes bitter flavours without requiring roasting. This process also removes enzyme inhibitors that exist in the skin of the nuts. Enzyme inhibitors are what allow nuts to stay dormant until they are soaked, sprouted, and ready to grow. It's nature's way of preserving the life force so they can reproduce in the future. Not all nuts have enzyme inhibitors: brazil, macadamia, hazelnuts and pistachios are nuts that don't need to be soaked for activating reasons. But doing so will make them easier to work with.

114

Cashews are particularly susceptible to sliminess and should not be soaked for longer than six hours. The harder the nut, such as almonds, hazelnuts, and pistachios, the longer you will need to soak them. Nuts with more oils such as brazil nuts, pecans, and walnuts, become saturated more easily. Keep in mind, the longer nuts soak the more waterlogged they become and you may require less water in your recipe. Often, one or two nuts will rise to the top. It's a good idea to discard these floaters as it usually means they have gone rancid. This is a good starting point to soaking. Once you get into a habit this will come naturally!

HOW LONG?

Almonds 12-14 hours Cashews 3-6 hours Hazelnuts 7-12 hours Macadamias 7-12 hours Peanuts 7-12 hours Pecans 7-12 hours Walnuts 7-12 hours Pine nuts 7-12 hours Sunflower seeds 7-12 hours

Homemade Almond Milk INGREDIENTS One part pre-soaked almonds Two parts water (I like my almond milk milky, you can use more water if you like to equal three parts) 1 tsp. of agave 1 pinch of salt (Himalayan) 1 tsp. of coconut oil Half a vanilla pod (the leftover stalk I put in a jar of porridge oats or anything that can benefit from the delicious smell of vanilla). METHOD Blend nuts and water together in a blender until you start getting a milky texture. Use a sieve to separate the pulp from the milk. Put milk back in a blender and add agave, salt, vanilla and coconut oil and give it another whizz. I like using a glass jar or bottle to store the milk – it’s more eco-friendly than plastic and keeps better in the fridge.

YOU CAN MAKE MANY DIFFERENT MILKS, SO DON’T LIMIT YOURSELF TO ALMONDS. There is hazelnut, sunflower and brazil nut to name a few of my favourites.

Basil Mayo INGREDIENTS 1 cup (120 grams) of cashews (pre-soaked for at least 4-6 hours) 1/2 cup (120 grams) of water or as much needed to get the mix going Handful of basil 1 tsp of nutritional yeast 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar 1/2 clove of garlic Pinch of salt (Himalayan) Pinch of black pepper METHOD Put all your ingredients in a blender and mix until creamy smooth. If mixture is a bit slow add small amounts of water until it blends easily. Store in a glass jar in the fridge.

What do you do with the pulp? I dehydrate mine to make almond flour, use in a cake or make little chocolate balls covered in sesame seeds.

WHAT'S NEWS MARBELLA MUM TACKLES EVEREST TREK FOR CHARITY

SPAIN KNOCKS OUT GB IN FIRST ROUND OF DAVIS CUP

Marbella Mum of two and Amateur Climber Hessia Fernandes, has set her sights on Everest to raise 6,000€ for Malaga children’s charity the Nena Paine Foundation. She will be starting her trek to Everest Base Camp on the 7th of October and is looking for support to raise funds to buy a second-hand minibus for this local charity for underprivileged children.

The GB team met Spain in Marbella over the weekend of 2nd – 4th February at the Puente Romano hotel on Marbella’s Golden Mile. Apart from one wet day, it was a sunny weekend and spectators packed the stands that the Puente Romano management had expanded to hold 9,000 people. Some 300 journalist from 50 countries also attended, as well as team organisers totalling somewhere between 800-1,000. Both sides were missing their big names with Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal both injured and Kyle Edmund also pulled out. The GB team was led by Liam Broady and Jamie Murray while the Spanish team had Pablo Carreno Busta, David Ferrer and Roberto Bautista Agut to call upon. Unfortunately for the GB team, the Spaniards were on great form and although Cameron Norrie beat Roberto Bautists Agut in Rubber 2, he was knocked out in the fourth round by Albert Ramos-Violas. It was never going to be easy for the British, playing a team that in Lopez

BIRTHDAY NUPTIAL The Nena Paine Foundation is a small Malaga charity that believes education is the key to freedom from poverty. This is a completely self-funded expedition, so every Euro raised will go directly to the children’s charity. To support the campaign, go to Hessia’s Just Giving Page: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ hessia-fernandes +34-671-721-452 hessia.fernandes@oracle.com nenapaine.es

The Grandaughter of Chris Kazolides (Red Pepper Restaurant, Puerto Banus) Stephanie, celebrated her 30th birthday at her family’s hotel, The Gran Hotel Benahavís. She transformed the hotels wedding venue into a boho-glittered haven where ove 50 guests sat for dinner on cushions and low white wooden rustic hand made tables, dancing barefoot until the early hours! Her big day was themed as a wedding to herself as Stephanie feels it’s essential to celebrate ourselves in any moment. We don’t have to wait for marriage to celebrate love because our first love should be with ourselves! In her everyday - Stephanie runs transformative week long retreats for 20+30 something’s experiencing a quarter life crisis. She feels passionately about helping others remember their happiest selves and live their best life. thequarterlifehealthproject.com

featured a former Grand Slam doubles champion and in his partner a Grand Slam finalist. And the contest got off to the worst possible start for Murray and Inglot when the latter lost his serve in the very first game, a break that the British couldn’t quite recover during a tight opening set.

WHAT'S NEWS

BLOCKCHAIN PLATFORM ARCALLIA AIMS TO SAVE THE WORLD Arcallia is a start-up platform on the Ethereum blockchain, which is offering the EESTY Coin (ticker EEC) as part of its crowdfunding ICO. The EEC token costs 0.5 USD and Arcallia claims it is the first crypto currency in the world with a real guarantee. The EEC token is the internal currency of the Arcallia platform and its future value will be backed by the success of real inventions and patents for products and processes that will improve the lives of people around the globe, but particularly in the developing world. Arcallia’s founders point out that there is a growing shortage of energy, food and drinking water, a deterioration of air quality, the arable land is becoming less fertile, depositories of necessary materials are being exhausted, so-called super diseases are spreading, the effectiveness of antibiotics is decreasing causing a decreasing quality in disease treatment. At the same time, the complexity of the society is ever increasing, requiring people to have increasingly specific knowledge and skills. Leading experts have taken the view that the solution is the rapid development of new technologies. Despite this, the spending for taking the inventions into use and to support research is decreasing year by year, since this type of expenditure does not create political capital. The pre-eminent system of governing does not support technical creativity, meaning innovative technical solutions and inventions.

BENALÚS RELAUNCHES ON MARBELLA’S GOLDEN MILE The luxury Benalús development on Marbella’s Golden Mile has restarted construction work on the exclusive gated community that will offer 27 apartments with all the amenities one might expect from a five-star resort. Work was temporarily stalled due to the problem over building licences at Marbella’s town hall, but this situation has now been rectified and the construction teams are back at work again. The project, which consists of three blocks, sits on a 9,000m2 plot. The urbanisation is a closed one with 24 hour security, spa, private and public swimming pools, community solarium, gym and a chill out. All surrounded by

7.000 square metres of green zones belonging to a protected `Cañada Real´. It is aimed at the ‘Premium’ buyer and is part of the revitalised Marbella property market. The director of the project, Sergio Fernández explains: “We are bringing a product of the highest quality to the market, made to satisfy even the most demanding of buyers and adapted to the latest trends and technologies. All preparations have been made to commence with the construction work in June 2018, the project is scheduled to be completed by the spring of 2020”. For more information go to benalus.com

There is a need for conceptually new solutions. This is especially true in the energy, transport, agricultural and food industries. For this, we need inventors and inventions that can be put to use. Since inventors are either individuals or small groups of individuals, it is important to find resources to support them. Arcallia’s idea is to help bring the creations of the inventors to life and in this way help to make the world a better place. You can be part of this community at arcallia.com and buy EEC at eestycoin.com
