Robert studied at the private Tower House School, from which he was expelled at age twelve. He subsequently entered Harrodian School, where he began to develop his interest in art and music. Thanks to his androgynous appearance, he began working as a model at a young age, however, this was short-lived as his features began to change.

orn in London, England on May 13th, 1986, Robert Pattinson is the youngest of three children. Despite being shy, Robert always wanted to be a performer. He initially wanted to pursue a career in music like his older sister Lizzy but his father encouraged him to try out acting.

Not long after he was cast as Edward Cullen in Twilight, the Saga of five books telling the love story of the young immortal and the human Bella Swan, who for reasons of destiny becomes the only human whose blood is irresistible to the vampire; this catapulted him to superstardom. But just before Robert got the part, and unsure of his future, he questioned whether he wanted to be an actor at all. “I hadn’t got to university, and I was just bumming around and not feeling particularly good at anything. At the time I was desperately

thinking I would never reach or achieve my goals,” he admitted. Despite an initial boycott of the film over his signing, his dedication to the script paid off and the movie was a roaring success. Next came Little Ashes, which starred the actor in a significant role as a young Salvador Dalí. Pattinson then reunited with his Twilight cast for New Moon, as well as three more films, 2010’s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and parts 1 and 2 of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Between the Twilight films Pattinson worked on 2010’s Remember Me and 2011’s Water for Elephants with Reece Witherspoon. In 2012, Pattinson took on one of his most challenging roles yet, playing young billionaire Eric Packer in the drama Cosmopolis, directed by David Cronenberg and starring Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti and Samantha Morton. The Rover, Maps of the Stars and The Lost City of Z followed in subsequent years before Robert portrayed a bank robber in the indie crime drama, Good Time. In 2019, he played ‘The Dauphin’ in David Michôd-directed historical drama film ‘The King.’ The film was based on a collection of William Shakespeare’s plays. The same year, he also played ‘Officer Mandel’ in Ciro Guerra-directed Englishlanguage Italian drama film ‘Waiting for the Barbarians.’ The film premiered on September 6, 2019, at ‘Venice Film Festival.’

In his youth, he acted in the Barnes Theatre Club starring in plays such as Out Town, Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Anything Goes. At the age of 17, he jumped from stage to screen in the TV movie, Ring of the Nibelungs before landing his first big break in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as Cedric Diggory. The movie put him on the map with Teen People magazine calling him “the next Jude Law” while Screen International magazine labelled him a “British Star of Tomorrow.”

Continuing his hugely successful 2019 Robert was cast to play an important role in ‘Tenet.’ Directed by Christopher Nolan, the movie also stars John David Washington, Elizabeth Debicki, and Dimple Kapadia in prominent roles. One to keep his private life out of the headlines, eventually, he reluctantly confirmed what millions of Twilight fans had suspected all along, that reports of a romance with his co-star Kristen Stewart were in fact true. After nearly four years of dating the duo called it quits in 2012. After his relationship with his co-star fizzled out, Pattinson pursued a romance with British musician FKA Twigs (Tahliah Barnett). The pair got

engaged in April 2015 six months of dating, but two years later, they parted ways. This year Robert stars as Batman in the newest reboot, ‘The Batman’ but unlike its predecessors, Matt Reeves latest release is certainly unlike any other rendition thus far. Director Matt stated that fans should not expect to see a young, orphaned Bruce Wayne find his calling in “The Batman.” In fact, the film is not an origin story at all. Pattinson fans have deemed him perfect to play the dark and brooding superhero, combined with Robert being a lifelong Batman fan and Reeves revealing that he wrote the script with him in mind… Pattinson is The Batman.

1 FEEDER – Torpedo

Feeder release their greatest hits album this month via Big Teeth Music; the album follows the 2019 record ‘Tallulah’. “After the frustration of not being able to perform live I really wanted to come back with a bang and a classic heavier but melodic Feeder song,” frontman Grant Nicholas said of ‘Torpedo’ in a statement. “All the emotion and frustration just caused a creative wave. Dynamically and musically Torpedo felt like the obvious choice for us to drop first. The chorus has a thread of positivity that brings light to the darker verses.” The album’s opening previews, title track ‘Torpedo’ and ‘Magpie’ both led with heavy, grinding riffs that made way for sky-high choruses.

Britney has landed a record-breaking publishing deal for a tell-all memoir about her rise to fame, her relationship with her family and her experience living under a conservatorship for more than a decade. Publisher Simon & Schuster secured the deal for the memoir for an impressive US$65m dollars. The deal is one of the biggest of all time, behind the Obamas. Britney’s book deal comes months after she successfully fought a court-ordered conservatorship, which had been put in place by her father, Jamie Spears, for almost 14 years. In 2021 Spears gave public testimony about the conservatorship for the first time, telling a Los Angeles judge that she had been forced to work by conservators despite begging for breaks, and that she had no control over her finances, was denied her wish to marry her boyfriend, and was barred from removing her birth control despite her wish to have a third child.

ast month a video went viral on social media showing posties from Royal Mail’s Clapham branch performing some seriously second class deliveries, apparently off their trolleys (and struggling to push them) after sharing a box of hash brownies.... and all before 7.30 in the morning! The tasty narcotics, discovered in a package labelled “Edibles by Pablo Chocobar” (small clue there...) had allegedly remained unclaimed in the sorting office for a month, having been dispatched to a vacant address with no return sender. Sensing nothing suspect (they must have all had blocked noses – it was February after all), employees at the sorting office apparently shared out the treats, with one staff member said (well, more “mumbled”) to have had four. The results were classic cause and effect stuff, with shuffling, confusion and no doubt an insatiable hankering for even more sweet treats. The story made the papers, distracting ever so briefly from all the intoxicated shuffling and mumbling taking place up the road at no. 10.

The media attention resulted in a clearly peeved Royal Mail announcing an investigation into misconduct and a blanket reminder to all staff of the correct procedures for dealing with undelivered packages.... presumably: DON’T F#CKING EAT THEM!!! No doubt Dank Bakery, the brand behind Pablo Chocobar, who openly specialise in just such “naturally medicinal” treats was glad for all the free publicity (Here’s a bit more for them!). Whether they’ve caught the attention of the boys in blue remains to

be seen, but who’s to say plod would be able to perform their duties without also succumbing to the evils of the herb. They wouldn’t be the first emergency service to have fallen foul... In 2019, nurses at a hospital in Warrington were left “off their faces” after shnaffling a Red Velvet Cake given to them out of appreciation by an elderly gent whose relative they’d cared for. The offending confectionery was left over from the recent 18th birthday party of the man’s grandson. Presumably the pensioner had waded through a sea of semi-coherent teens slumped over sofas and dribbling on the living room floor, ascribing their stupefied malaise as “young people these days” before pocketing the leftovers and failing to ask the most pertinent question: “What 18 year old boy would choose a Red Velvet Cake for their birthday??!” It’s presumed even Boris got a Colin the Caterpillar at his lockdown-buster and he was turning 56! Whilst Warrington Hospital initially outright denied any nurses had partaken, once police confirmed illicit substances had been consumed, the hospital’s story to the public was forced to change (Sound familiar Boris??....) An unnamed member of staff confirmed a handful of nurses had chowed down and were left “relaxed”, something nobody working in the NHS has been allowed to feel in years.

Turns out mere feet isn’t enough to successfully report on the burning of eight and a half tonnes of heroin, opium, hashish and other narcotics. This is where our license fee is going people! Whilst the poor victims of these totally unintentional drug encounters were left so harrowed by their ordeals they could barely post about them on Instagram

Rise of The Footsoldier star, Roland Manookian, who is also known from Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla, chose the coastal town to shoot some of the scenes for his debut feature film.

The cast, among others, includes well-known figures such as Craig Fairbrass and Geoff Bell. Our very own Nicole Moerland, founder and director of Marbella Film School, also appears in a scene, playing Sister Angela. ‘The Sun Also Rises’ is currently in postproduction and expected to be released by the end of the year. We asked Roland about his experience as a director and also talked about his future plans.

So if it’s possible, this film just shines the smallest light on the subject, then that can only be a good thing,

l Why did you choose Marbella as one of your filming locations? I have filmed myself as an actor many times in Spain and in particular Marbella so I am well versed and very fond of Marbella in general.

l You’ve been known mainly as an actor. What made you want to get into directing as well?

For this project, Marbella gives a real tangible polarity between the grey skies of inner-city London and the deep blue sun-kissed skies of Marbella.

I have been incredibly fortunate to have carved out a somewhat modest career in acting. Through acting over the past 20 odd years, I discovered a further passion for writing and subsequently directing.

l What is next for you? Any upcoming projects that you can talk about? Any plans to return to Marbella?

Writing and directing, for me are just extensions of a different type of storytelling like acting is.

I am currently editing the film and also in the process of writing my new feature working alongside Move Mountain Productions once again.

l Can you share a bit about the most challenging and the most rewarding moments of directing your first feature film?

At the moment, I am not at liberty to discuss the project, but we will be most definitely returning to Marbella to film the project and also work alongside the amazing Frankie Lancaster, our Spanish producer and his production team.

The most challenging part of directing my first film was the subject matter which involves and attempts to explore the cycles of domestic violence in people’s lives. Not only writing such a traumatic piece but also having to ask a great deal from the actors to try and bring truth and authenticity to their performances made this endeavour both equally challenging and rewarding. It was a joy to work alongside my amazing cast and crew on this project.

l What inspired you to be part of this production and to direct this film in particular? I believe vehemently that this story needs to be told. Sadly, in this day and age domestic violence is still very

Sam: We were typical siblings who grew up together. we have always been close but took different paths in early adulthood before our reconnection.

Soheil: Teaching or coaching sports activities.

Has there ever been any sibling rivalry?

Sam: To become the natural choice for patients looking for advanced treatments, such as dental implants. The future goal is to maintain what we have created and become better at what we do.

Sam: Not that I can remember. We have never competed; on the contrary it has been more trying to elevate each other. Soheil: It’s really strange, but I have never felt rivalry with my brother, even though we are in the same profession. I am quite competitive personally, and I always have the mindset that my success is worthless if it doesn’t lift my fellow partner also.

What are the advantages and challenges of working with family? Sam: The obvious advantage is that you enjoy complete trust. coming from the same parents, you tend to share the same values. Soheil: Finding a balance is a challenge, being mindful not to step on each others toes, but to still have a voice and to find your optimum position within the company. Often, family businesses fail because people take things too personally. You have to learn to distinguish between private and professional.

What do you consider your biggest accomplishment? Sam: The overall sustainable growth of Mark Dental is our biggest accomplishment. Having been able to establish several clinics on the coast, enjoying a great reputation and having returning patients and recommendations. All of which we have managed to achieve in a very competitive market amid a challenging business landscape.

Soheil: I would say that we are still here after 12 years of working together and have not killed each other (haha).

What are your future goals for the practice?

Soheil: As Sam says but also investing in the future of dentistry by passing on our experience and knowledge, maybe even creating a small academy where students can be trained under our supervision.

What current tv series are you watching? Sam: I love Seinfield and I can watch it over and over again. Soheil: I watch very little TV. If I do, I usually watch a marathon or something sports related.

What’s your favourite film? Sam: My favorite movie is Any given Sunday. Soheil: I love the Christopher Nolan movie Interstellar.

What are your favourite hobbies? Sam: Believe it or not, my favourite hobby is cleaning my garden! (haha) Soheil: I have in the past year developed a hobby for climbing mountains!. I climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa which was almost 6000 meters, my next conquest will be Mont Blanc.

Name your 3 dinner guests dead or alive? Sam: George Constanza from Seinfeild Ben Stiller and Marlon Brando Soheil: My grandfather, who I never really got to know. Alex Honnold, he is a rock climber who climbed a 910 meter vertical wall without ropes! and Per-Ingvar Brånemark, the pioneer who invented the dental implant.

What do you love about Marbella ? Sam: Da Bruno’s pil pil!!! Soheil: The cultural variety of its inhabitants.

Name your favourite Marbella restaurants Sam: BIBO Soheil: My favourite is a local pasta place in Aloha, Pasta Factory.

Outside of Marbella, what is your favourite holiday destination? Sam: Has to be Rome! Soheil: Como Lake, Italy.

ay it yourself and it means little, because excellence cannot be self-defined. Other people must say it, and when those other people happen to be the 100 independent judges in the International Property Awards, one of the most prestigious property competitions in the world, you know you have a healthy relationship with excellence. Although it may be surprising that a residential development company tucked away in a small corner of Southern Europe may have won such an award, it is not totally unexpected for the company itself, or for those who have a special interest in property development throughout the world, because, along with their partners UDesign, they won the award “Best Architecture Single Residence, Europe” for their 2019 entry, Villa Alcuzcuz. Add to this the award for “Best Architecture in Europe (Multiple Residence)” for Vista Lago and “Best CGI Company in the World” for UDesign in the same awards this year, and a defining pattern for this partnership begins to emerge. If Vista Lago were a film, BRIGHT would be the producer and UDesign the artistic director, each with their own skillset. Indeed, a luxury development of this kind is not that far removed from the making of a full-length feature film: a huge investment in a project that requires detailed planning from the start, whose inherent risk factor has to be managed by an unusual level of professionalism, creativity and dedication. Michael Rodziewicz, CEO of BRIGHT Marbella, was born and grew up in Poland, and has always looked at the bigger picture, although sometimes the picture starts small. When he first met Jason Harris, CEO of UDesign, he just needed some help in designing his home in Marbella, but the meeting of these two exceptional minds, both focussed on design as the driving force behind all residential construction and development, led directly to the partnership we have today.

Michael brought a lifetime of experience in the luxury development field to the Marbella partnership, and he sees design as the primary expression of creativity. “A great home”, he says, “should improve your quality of life, probably more than any other single factor. That’s why every villa in Vista Lago is both a stunning property and a unique home. Our whole way of thinking when it comes to property development is design-driven, and the design, in turn, is an expression of creativity, but always in the service of producing a certain feeling, a canvas for a lifestyle.” As developer, one of Michael’s tasks is to keep the project on an even keel, financially speaking. This means being good at business, but to achieve the success he now enjoys, he must also have a comprehensive knowledge of design and the rare ability to always know exactly what will work where. Quite simply, there is no room for mistakes at this level.

“We’re businesspeople,” he says, “and we have to ensure that the figures work. But this business, the creation of homes, should not be directed from a spread sheet. We design our homes around the resident and the spaces they will be living in, and that’s the most important of all. That’s what brings the concept to life.” And what a concept it is! A rare meeting point of exceptional creative design, luxury construction, state-of-the-art sustainability and a location second to none, providing the best views over the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa from virtually every room in every one of the 18 villas that make up the development. When Michael first stood on the virgin plot and looked around him, his imagination went into overdrive. Now, looking at the same views from the same place, he has the satisfaction of knowing that dreams can come true if you work hard enough on them. “For me it is a labour of love,” he says, “and in spite of the hard work involved, it’s a real pleasure to see it all come together.”

ARCHITECTURE IS NOT JUST ABOUT BUILDINGS ON THE OUTSIDE, IT’S ABOUT THE WHOLE PACKAGE, OUTSIDE AND IN

Jason, can you tell us why, in your opinion, Vista Lago won the award for “Best Architecture (Multiple Residence), Europe”? Well, firstly I’d like to point out that without the support, experience and know-how of Marbellabased architects Gonazlez and Jacobsen, we could not have done what we did. So even though we won the award, it’s just as much theirs as it is ours. The Vista Lago plot is an extremely complicated piece of land to develop and they have been instrumental in this success. And this success, I believe, is to do with the changing face of residential architecture over recent decades. Architecture is not just about buildings on the outside, it’s about the whole package, outside and in. In the past, almost everybody focussed on the exterior of the building, and that was known as architecture. The inside was left to the interior designers, as if the two entities were separate. We realised the importance of the interior from the very start, because people live in the inside, not the outside, so we design our houses from the inside out. We bring architecture and interior design closer together.

So is this what makes great architecture? Great architecture doesn’t have to be the Sydney Opera House or the Guggenheim Museum. It’s not just the design of an iconic building, but a great space that feels bright, inviting and comfortable. Architecture, in general, has changed direction; it’s now much more than the structure of a building from the outside, it should be just as inspiring and enjoyable on the inside – this is sensory architecture.

Does that mean you put more thought into the interiors of your houses than the exteriors? We put an extraordinary amount of thought into every aspect of our houses, inside and out, but at a practical level, the very nature of living forces us to focus on the inside. Just think: you’re looking at your house from the outside, and what do you see? Only part of it, a façade. But inside you’re surrounded by your house, and how it has been designed will affect your mood to a great extent. And that’s not to say that the outside is of lesser importance. The terraces, for example, have to be just right, to feel like an extension of the lounge, and we’re in an area of the world where terraces are of vital importance to the liveability of a house, where people generally eat out in the cool of the evenings, where the pool is used a great deal throughout the day. Size and proportion must relate to each other too. Height can only work in relation to the rest of the space available. You don’t want to feel as if you’re living in an ill-proportioned box. A high ceiling could be four metres high or ten metres high: it all depends on how big the floor space is. Function and usability is the key, and is independent of size. You can’t really feel cosy in a cathedral. In the end, it all comes down to understanding how to create an enjoyable space.

IN DESIGNING EACH ROOM, YOU FIRST NEED TO KNOW WHAT ITS FUNCTION IS GOING TO BE

Do you have a standard process in going about designing a house? It all begins with a single room and works outwards, before you even begin to think about materials, processes and structure. And in designing each room, you first need to know what its function is going to be: who will use it, how many people will use it at one time, why will they use it, and that means both architecture and design. Design is objective in every sense of the word. You design by knowing what you’re designing for, otherwise it would all be no more than a work of subjective art that may mean something to you only.

IT’S NEVER ABOUT WHAT YOU’VE ACCOMPLISHED, BUT WHAT YOU HAVE YET TO ACCOMPLISH. How relevant is this success in the International Property Awards to you? Look, we don’t enter competitions for the glory of winning. We’re a relatively young architectural company, and winning prestigious international awards like this is a way of promoting our work. We all want people to see and enjoy what we have created. This is especially true of residential architecture, which is fairly useless unless lived in. The awards are a great opportunity to show our passion and creativity. We put ourselves up against much bigger companies and won, and this is something the whole team can be proud of.

You began as interior designers. How much has that affected you as architects? One of the reasons we began to design houses and villas was because, as interior designers we always felt that the spaces that we were asked to design could have been much better if the furniture positioning was considered from the beginning. So rather than complain about how much better we might have done it, we simply did it.

You’ve won single and multiple residence awards, now what? It’s never about what you’ve accomplished, but what you have yet to accomplish. Every time you finish a project, you think immediately of how much better the next one could be. The motivation and the challenge is always to improve, although we know we can never reach perfection, we enjoy trying. We also have new and exciting materials coming on the market all the time that we can draw inspiration from. It’s the same with state-of-the-art technology, which may not have existed when you started with your last project. You always want to improve and learn and experiment.

THE AWARDS ARE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW OUR PASSION AND CREATIVITY

In our opinion there are companies that can create more realistic CGIs than ours, but what makes ours special is the fact that they are an exact representation of what the final design will look like. We always intended our CGIs to be more than pretty pictures whose promises could not be realised in the real world. The object of CGI is to show the client what they will have, not what we hope they will have. All the products we show in our CGIs are real and currently available or are something we know we can design and make in our own workshops. Many professional photographers mistake them for photographs, which is probably why we won in that discipline. They are also very beautiful in themselves. Our trademark is the quality of design matching the realism of the finished building. Even the gardens, with their natural stone, water, trees and so on, are real in every way. Our secret is we’re in-house. We do it all ourselves, and we all work well together.

5 Delicious Ways to Eat Sambal Bettina, our resident foodie, offers her insider knowledge on plant based cuisine and takes us on a culinary journey as she travels the world in search of gastronomic inspiration.

I love Sambal – it’s a great fridge staple and will most definitely liven up any dish and make them sing. But what is it, I hear you ask? Well… Sambal is a chili sauce or paste native to Southeast Asia that has been made from a mixture of different ingredients – mostly made from a variety of chili peppers and then finished with garlic, ginger, shallots, lime juice and traditionally shrimp paste, but has more of a kick than your normal siracha which lends itself more to the sweeter side of the palate. This one is pure fire. This specific Sambal recipe was actually handed down to me when I was running a retreat in Bali. It, like many recipes that have been handed down, all have their own unique little twists. So there are multiple different Balinese versions, but this one has stayed my absolute favourite. It lasts forever in the fridge and is the perfect way to add a punch to any dish.

INGREDIENTS (makes one 200g/7oz jar) 1 red Thai chilli 1⁄2 shallot 1 medjool date, stoned (pitted) 1⁄2 tablespoon salt 2 tablespoons grated fresh root ginger 1 garlic clove, peeled 1 tomato, deseeded and chopped 1⁄2 red (bell) pepper, deseeded and roughly chopped 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar squeeze of lime juice 60 ml (2 fl oz / 1⁄4 cup) olive oil METHOD: Put all the ingredients into a food processor and blitz until you get a saucelike consistency. Pour into a jar or an airtight container that can easily be stored in the fridge.

Ways to Spice Up Any Dish Now you can have your own unlimited supply of the tastiest, zingiest and spiciest sauce, you can add a punch of flavour to so many things. Here are my favourite things to do with it.

l Grain Bowls Add a spoon or two (depending on your heat

preference) of Sambal to any grain bowl. It complements so many wonderful ingredients that you would traditionally find in grain bowls and just takes it to a whole new level. Sambal is traditionally paired with rice, so it’s a great addition to any grain-like-product.

l Salads The ingredients in Sambal naturally pair well with raw veggies, which makes it a great topping or dressing for salads. Either drizzle over the top or massage into your leaves to break them down and really infuse that flavour in.

l Soups Need a punch of flavour – add a spoon of

Sambal into your soup. You can do this in multiple ways. Either cook it out with your base ingredients, add just before blending, or swirl in after cooking. It’s completely up to you. If you want a spicy soup but your family don’t you can just add in after to tailor to your own preference and keep the whole family happy.

l Marinade This not only works great as a dressing, but

leave it for some time and the magic really sets in. Try marinading into softer vegetables such as aubergine or field mushrooms and once cooked their juicy texture will be filled with a spicy Sambal taste that packs a punch with barely any effort.

l Toast A bit of a curve ball but I actually love Sambal just

slathered on a thick cut of toast. Sometimes I’ll eat it just like that, or I’ll add additional toppings to make something super fancy. A few slices of avocado, or tomato or even some nuts and seeds sprinkled on top. Always an extra squeeze of lime and a touch of sea salt.

The popular Ojén Eco Reserve, a conservation area for wildlife, has been closed down for the foreseeable future and fined €130,000, much to the anger of locals. This unique wildlife park located only 10 minutes from Marbella, is a natural shelter for wild animals with a focus on preservation and environmental education. The reserve is very popular with residents and visitors to the region. Ideal for families with children, it gives them the opportunity to interact with the fauna - deer, mountain goats, foxes and Egyptian mongooses in their natural habitat. The Eco Reserve team describe the sanction as a ‘disproportionate and lacerating punishment’ and state that the 2020 inspection has been solved. They have requested an emergency meeting with the territorial delegate for Sustainable Development in order to find a solution as soon as possible. The closure order means they have had to cancel all visits from schools and

family groups booked in for Easter, and are still struggling financially from the aftermath of the pandemic. Requests being shared on social media show that the Reserve desperately need the services of an environmental lawyer to hopefully overturn these unjust actions. “As an Ecological Reserve and Fauna Refuge, we are committed to the life of wild fauna, orphans or injured, so we cannot ask for a card or invoice of origin for the animals that come to us, such as foxes or wild boars.
