PUBLISHER’S LETTER

IT’S MAY AND THE COUNTDOWN TO SUMMER HAS REALLY BEGUN. If you’re anything like the SOCIETY team, that will mean a lot of hard partying as the beach clubs start to open for the season and new venues get up and running to attract the tourists who should be arriving any minute now. If you haven’t started thinking about hitting the beach yet, then our cover should act as a reminder that it’s about time you thought about what visual impact you’re thinking of for Summer 2018. This collection of swimwear by Virginia Macari really sets the benchmark for what the seriously stylish beach babe should be considering this year. Not that life is all fun and giggles, of course. Just imagine being the parents of Ray and Dave Davies or Noel and Liam Gallagher and think of the atmosphere in those households over Christmas. All I can say is – rather them than me! The Kinks and Oasis have really set the bar for musical civil wars and some of their spats have been as vicious as they have been eyewateringly funny. We have especially loved some of Noel’s public digs at his little brother. Since I currently feel as though I’m surrounded by women obsessing about their so-called bikini bodies, it seemed exactly the right time to look at the new sugar tax, which is now being levied on fizzy drinks in the UK. Is it a good idea – or is it yet another example of Britain turning into a ‘nanny state’ in which citizens’ rights and choices are curtailed by legislation? And, as I asked a friend the other day, is there anyone left alive who orders original Coke these days, anyway? The past few decades have marked an enormous improvement from the days of Tab (anyone remember that now or am I just being old?) to the full flavour of Cola Zero. Eleanor McKenzie takes a look at the whys and wherefores of this new money-spinning idea and has a look at the impact it has had on countries like Mexico, which have introduced their own sugar taxes to combat childhood obesity.

KJ Elsdon has had her musical hat firmly on this month and, apart from her dissection of the duelling brothers, has turned her attention to the phenomenon of the jukebox musical. I was surprised to find that the first true jukebox musical dates to 1975, so it’s obviously a more wellestablished phenomenon than I first thought. With Broadway and London’s West End relying on musicals featuring established artists and hits to fill theatres, it looks as though it’s more unusual these days when a production featuring an original score opens. If you’re thinking of giving your home a seasonal makeover then look no further than the ultra-talented Rita van Dijk who has all the experience that you need to make sure that your villa, townhouse or apartment is also ready for the warmer weather, especially when this means that it’s likely that you’ll be welcoming family and friends hoping to escape the socalled Northern European Summer. If you’re thinking of splashing out on a new motor so that you can cruise Banús in style, then may we recommend the Porsche GT2 RS? Who cares if your bikini body is ready or not if you’re driving this magnificent piece of kit? I could say that I’m not suffering car envy – but I would be lying through my teeth. ‘Til next time… Andy Clark

PLAIN T-SHIRTS UNDER ANYTHING!

While this trend started from slip dresses worn over simple t-shirts, this fashion season all sorts of dresses and jumpsuits worn over all types of shirts, from silk dresses worn over sporty shirts at OffWhite to flowy dresses worn over leopard shirts at Balenciaga. So have some fun this spring and mix and match your t-shirts, button downs and tops with your dresses and jumpsuits for some new and exciting outfits! SOCKS AND SHOES

A new power couple — a sock and elegant heel — was spotted at Spring/ Summer 2018 shows, seen everywhere from Prada to Erdem, Fendi to Preen. Burberry slouched-down a bonny argyle sock with tartan heels, while Miu Miu’s socks popped in fluorescent yellow. It’s not just for the catwalk: Kendall Jenner took a nude pop-sock and spindly stiletto straight to the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival. The sandal/sock combo is also getting a refresh with new colour combos: Try black ankle socks and golden sandals, as seen at Marc Jacobs, or white on orange, as seen at Missoni.

DARK DENIM

We're not crazy enough to retire our vintage, light-wash Levi's, but dark denim is seeing a resurgence.

SUPERSIZE EARRINGS

When it comes to earrings, more is more: the bigger, the weirder, the better. Swing from Burberry’s chandelier styles, to Valentino’s disco-balls. Chanel’s jumbo icicles will surely put a finishing touch on your Instagram selfie. If your ears aren’t pierced, don’t fret. Queen Bee herself is a fan of Alessandra Rich’s clip-on, collarbone-grazing collection of diamante drop earrings.

BOLD COLOURS

This summer will be very bright indeed if the catwalks are anything to go by - least of all at Christopher Kane and Roksanda Ilincic. From New York to Paris, the shows were awash with vibrant, bold shades to suit every colouring.

JUMPSUITS

Jumpsuits are going to be a staple item in our wardrobe this spring. There’s going to be one for every taste and body shape.

CHECKS

Checks will be the groundbreaking pattern for summer. While it might not be anything terribly innovative, it’s still a little odd to see a pattern we normally associate to winter and rainy days steal the show for Summer 2018. The secret lies in playing with colors: match it with bold colors and choose colorful ones, like Stella McCartney and Balenciaga do. Or go for matching, ton-sur-ton hues, and be forever chic.

X-GIRL SUNGLASSES

This '90s sunglass shape is back. It comes in the form of razor edges, Oakley-esque touches, and a fearless experimentation with color.

PLASTIC

Life in plastic, is fantastic! Barbie used to sing that in the famous Aqua hit song, and we decided to follow her lead after watching Chanel‘s shows, an ode to the explorer of waterfalls, who repairs deluxe clothing with sheer and chic accessories and clothing. Perfect for British summers, waterproof plastics are going to be everywhere this year. Valentino‘s plastic biker jacket will be everyone’s secret wish for the season, and Balmain is also riding the trend. It might not be very eco-friendly, but after seeing Jimmy Choo‘s collaboration with Off White we can’t wait to wrap our pumps in some plastic sheets… It might not be super convenient, but imagine how practical it will be on rainy days! This is definitely our favorite trend! Long T-shirt: MALANDRA Shiny Jeans: SSTRÖM BY GEM

Reality Bites It looks as though the SOCIETY team aren’t the only ones preparing themselves for the madness of Summer. Natalie has also been busy making sure that she has had enough rest and recreation to see her through until Autumn!

Celebrity beautician, reality television star, and Director of Bardou Salon in Puerto Banús Natalie

Richardson

gives SOCIETY readers the chance to keep up with her latest exploits.

Last month I told you I would be jetting off to Dubai for some well-earned rest and to prepare myself for the chaos of another busy summer at Bardou - and what a holiday it was! It started in style at Málaga Airport where we enjoyed champagne and seafood at the Caviar House and Seafood Bar. I’m a terrible flyer so this always relaxes me before we take off.

Taking off

My Outfit:

Melissa Oldabash dress, Hermes sandals, Fendi bag and head band from Zara.

The first resort

Once we arrived we were chauffeur driven to our hotel, The Anantara Resort on The Palm. This is a wonderful place which brings a touch of Thai to Dubai! We rented a private villa complete with its own pool on the beach which the girls loved. The resort is wonderful; so clean, with friendly staff and a great kids’ club. I would highly recommend it.

We flew with Emirates Airlines on the new two-level Airbuses, which were glorious. I honestly didn’t feel the take-off at all and slept most of the way in a dreamy lay-down bed. The food was exquisite, completely restaurant worthy and the cabin crew couldn’t have been sweeter. You are also given a complimentary goodie bag from Bulgari - what a way to fly! As you can see, my little princess rather enjoyed herself too.

Easter Bunny

We were lucky enough to enjoy Easter in Dubai, so while the girls were busy meeting the Easter Bunny (who arrived by boat), camel riding and, of course, finding lots of eggs, Mummy and Daddy chilled out in the super Beach House Restaurant which is part of the hotel. Sipping cocktails and smoking a shisha has to be my favourite Easter to date!

Budget beauty

I absolutely loved my beach outfit here all by Oysho; it goes to show you don’t need to spend a fortune to look like a million bucks! As we had a private villa we needed wheels to get around the resort, as it’s fairly big, so we were provided with our own golf buggy! Me being me, I just had to coordinate my outfit with our ride. The two-set is ASOS, plus Valentino sandals, Balenciaga bag and Gucci glasses

Casually hanging out on a unicorn!

Bikini ready

While in Dubai we met up with some friends of ours from Marbella who were also on vacation and headed down to El Chiringuito, where we enjoyed not only the fantastic, laid-back atmosphere but also some of the best sangria I’ve ever tried. Be warned - the last glass is definitely the strongest! They also have a garden swing which was just perfect for a selfie. Credit to my amazing trainer, Luke Hill for getting me into shape and bikini worthy for these shots. The bikini is Bahimi bikini another great and affordable online store for cute beachwear.

Dinner at the harbour

There’s just so much to see and do in Dubai you can never get bored and, even though the food at the resort was scrummy, we wanted to check out a new Lebanese restaurant in the business district of Dubai at the Grover House Hotel. It was delicious and catered for both vegetarians and vegans, which I find quite difficult sometimes.

My Outfit Uterque, bag Hermes and the handsome man is my husband!

Another day, another dreamy outfit Baby shower – This was also from and real showers Spotted on celeb.com.

Personal style

A huge ‘thank you’ to my friend Flavia from Spotted on celeb.com for acting as my personal stylist for this trip and dressing me in some wonderful outfits like this sundress.

Love and kisses as always xx

It was actually a beach dress but I thought it was so damn cute I wanted to wear it for dinner complete with Sophia Webster heels and YSL bag. As you can see my mini me has inherited my sense of fashion and got the matching shoes for herself!

A day at the waterpark

A long-term friend of mine moved to Dubai a few years ago, so while there we decided to catch up and went to the Sofitel Hotel where there is a great inflatable waterpark for the children. The grown-ups enjoyed glorious sushi and seafood while a DJ played on the terrace. Of course, it wasn’t all about socialising. For most of the trip I was quite happy to sunbathe and chill out; life is always better with a coconut and a tan, after all

The lost city?

There’s also Nobu in the Atlantis which happened to be right next door to us and, let’s face it, who doesn’t love a Nobu? Talking of Atlantis, we spent a wonderful day there with the children, where we played at the waterpark and even swam with dolphins! This was an amazing experience which I know we’ll all remember for years to come. A quick tip if you’re going - book fast-pass tickets, which give you entry to all the rides without queuing! This is especially good for the aquarium water slide, where you travel through a clear tunnel of sea animals and sharks.

After landing back in Marbella to hear about the terrible weather you’d been having, I brought the sunshine back with me thankfully as it was time to celebrate with our favourite yummy mummy Debbie for her baby shower at La Sala. Unfortunately, the sun got a little too hot for me, so I did my best nun impression to keep the heat at bay. Totally cutting some shade there with my look!

Sherlock V. Watson? His reputation as a good-natured, approachable gentleman is well deserved and it seems that Benedict Cumberbatch doesn’t have a lot of time for his Sherlock co-star, Martin Freeman’s tendency to be (to put it bluntly) a bit of a whinging git. Complaining about the level of expectation among fans created by Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and Stephen Thompson’s clever, mind-bending scripts, Freeman recently complained that he felt crushed by the weight of fans’ expectations of the series: “Being in that show, it is a miniBeatles thing. People’s expectations, some of it’s not fun anymore. It’s not a thing to be enjoyed.” Needless to say Cumberbatch, who always gives every impression of being able to turn two weeks in Skegness with a pair of wellies and a butterfly net into a font of endless fun, is not quite of the same mind. Declaring Freeman’s statement to be “pretty pathetic”, Cumberbatch is obviously very happy with his Sherlock tenure, although those in the know claim that, even after six years of working together, Holmes and Watson’s friendship is very much confined to their fictional counterparts.

A Berry Arresting Experience Is there a person alive today in Britain who doesn’t adore Mary Berry? With Delia Smith spending most of her time with her Norwich City FC duties these days Bezza, as she is affectionately known, seems to have taken over as Britain’s favourite promoter of tasty, traditional food. After decades in the business her fame reached its zenith when she was chosen as a judge on the BBC’s Great British Bake Off and her dislike of soggy bottoms entered the nation’s cultural history. At the age of 83, she is the picture of bourgeois respectability, so it came as a shock when she recently admitted that she had once had her collar felt. Appearing on The Graham Norton Show, Berry confessed that even she has a dark side and was arrested 25 years ago, when airport sniffer dogs detected strange white powders in one of her suitcases. Unfortunately for the narcotics officers on duty, Bezza was far from being a drugs mule: “‘I was going to the US to do some cookery demonstrations and was worried that there might be problems, so I weighed out all the ingredients – flour, sugar – and put them all in little plastic bags. When I arrived at the airport the sniffer dogs made a bee-line for me. Suddenly I was surrounded by uniformed people and my assistant and I were put in separate cells. It was alarming,” she admitted. If she had only played her cards right she could have become Pablo Escobar’s personal chef!

Arrivederci, Avicii

As if it wasn’t bad enough that we recently said our fond farewells to housewives’ favourite and regular visitor to Estepona, Dale Winton, the music world also reeled with shock on hearing of the death of superstar producer and DJ, Avicii. The Swedish-born star – whose real name was Tim Bergling – was only 28 years old but had apparently had his gall bladder and appendix removed in recent years and suffered from recurring bouts of acute pancreatitis. However, the exact cause of his death is not yet known. Recent photos reveal that Bergling was looking happy, if rather gaunt and had been staying at the Muscat Hills Resort in Oman when he died. Best known for his club hits, ‘Wake Me Up’, ‘Levels’, ‘Hey Brother’ and his collaborations with Rita Ora, Lenny Kravitz, Leona Lewis and David Guetta, Avicii had built up a substantial fan base, so it’s not surprising that so many music lovers have been shocked and saddened by this loss. The only positive thing is that he has left us many great hits, which will be heard in clubs all over the world for many years to come.

Lily and Liam’s Mile High Adventure

You’re trying to attract publishers to pay top dollar for your autobiography - which can hardly be described as ‘eagerly awaited’ – so what should you do? If you’re musical pea-brain Lily Allen, you could always blow the dust off a random sexual encounter with a fellow celeb that occurred in 2009. With a collective IQ that would scarcely challenge a mollusc, it’s not surprising that Allen and Liam Gallagher would come together at some point. Bored during an alcoholsoaked 11-hour flight to Japan where the pair were to perform at the Fuji Rocks Festival they – according to Allen – joined the infamous Mile High Club. Boasting that her forthcoming memoirs, entitled My Thoughts Exactly, will contain a no-holds-barred account of her life so far, it is likely that La Allen’s fans will be tempted to turn straight to the Liam incident, so it will sell books, which is the good news. What is less welcome is the fact that Liam’s then missus Nicole Appleton has obviously heard all the brouhaha surrounding the historical encounter and is now on the warpath. Be afraid, Lily and Liam – be very afraid!

Welcoming 006½ They both have children from previous relationships and are, not to put too fine a point on it, getting on in years, so showbiz observers were very surprised when Rachel Weisz and her partner, Daniel Craig announced that they were expecting their first baby together. Weisz, who is 48 years old, and Craig, who is 50, both declared themselves delighted with the forthcoming addition to their family. Weisz told the New York Times, “I’ll be showing soon. Daniel and I are so happy. We’re going to have a little human. We can’t wait to meet him or her. It’s all such a mystery.” Craig has a 25-year-old daughter from his earlier marriage to actress Fiona Loudon and Weisz has an 11-year-old son from her previous relationship with director Darren Aronofsky, but the couple are obviously excited to have an addition to their family. Craig is famously averse to the spotlight, even more so during his tenure as James Bond and Weisz is equally keen to maintain a low media profile, so we might have to wait some time before being introduced to the new member of the clan.

here’s nothing to say that all siblings who form musical alliances necessarily fall out with each other: just look at Gary and Martin Kemp, Craig and Charlie Reid, Matt and Luke Goss, Richard and Karen Carpenter and Richard and Fred Fairbrass, to name but five famous alliances. All seem to have developed a way of working together that circumvents any serious sibling rivalry – and then there are The Brothers Davies and The Brothers Gallagher.

Hailing from the very suburban setting of Fortis Green, Muswell Hill, Ray Davies and his younger brother Dave would perhaps have enjoyed a happier, more fulfilling relationship had they not both developed a keen interest in music. Originally enrolled as a student at Hornsey College of Art, Ray Davies became increasingly obsessed with popular music, being guided by influential British blues musician Alexis Korner and introduced to some invaluable contacts.

Hardy, Dave looked back on the early years of The Kinks: “When you grow up in a big family that’s very close, everyone helps each other. Then suddenly at 16, we were thrown into being a band. I treated the world - all our fans - as an extended family. They loved me and I loved them.” Affection from his older brother, however, proved harder to come by. “He [Ray] has this thing that he has to put me down. I was a cocky kid who always pulled more chicks than he did.”

As his older brother was picking up some useful contacts, Dave started modestly by playing skiffle and immersing himself in the music hall fare that his parents loved, while also happily absorbing the newer influences of jazz and rock and roll. It was this odd yet potent mixture that would later prove so important to The Kinks and spawn hits such as ‘Lola’ and ‘Dedicated Follower of Fashion’.

Some of this aggro appears to have extended to the rest of the band, as drummer Mick Avory attacked Dave onstage at Cardiff’s Capitol Theatre with his hi-hat stand, knocking him unconscious. Avory fled the scene, terrified that he had killed his bandmate and Dave was rushed to Cardiff Royal Infirmary where he received 16 stitches to his head.

Early in 1964 the brothers Davies, who were by now performing with their musical colleagues as The Kinks, secured a record deal with Pye Records and the scene was set for stellar musical success, with their first big hit, ‘You Really Got Me’ being followed by other songs that will forever be associated with that charmed era in which British music not only changed the face of the society from which it came, but conquered America to boot.

Add to this desperate scenario more than a smidgen of drugs (Dave) and a diagnosis of manic-depression (Ray was driven to a suicide attempt before this possibility was raised) and you have the perfect scenario for conflict. Any hopes that maturity might intervene in the brothers’ relationship was thoroughly scotched when Ray stamped on Dave’s 50th birthday cake. On her death bed, Dave claims that his mother advised him, “Make sure you get something for yourself because your brother’s never going to help you”.

So far, so good. However, offstage things were far from easy between the brothers. Doubtless countless psychotherapists would be able to put forward perfectly reasonable theories about the vexed relationship between the erstwhile youngest member of the family having his nose put out of joint by the arrival of a new baby, but the bad blood between Ray and Dave was legendary by even Cain and Abel standards.

DAVE REFLECTED THAT THE BASIS OF MANY OF HIS MOST BITTER FIGHTS WITH RAY WERE A RESULT OF THE TWO YOUNGEST DAVIES SIBLINGS COMPETING FOR THEIR PARENTS’ ATTENTION

For his part, Ray claims that he never speaks to Dave, even after a lifethreatening stroke looked as though it might end the latter’s musical career. However, Dave still writes and releases music and to this day says, “I could never not love Ray. He’s my brother.”

Later on Dave reflected that the basis of many of his most bitter fights with Ray were a result of the two youngest Davies siblings competing for their parents’ attention. In a 2010 interview with Daily Mail journalist Rebecca

47

independent yet highly influential label, the band, which was by now known as Oasis, released its first album the following year. Definitely Maybe won high praise from critics and sold strongly, but it was 1995’s (What’s the Story) Morning Glory that really propelled that The Brothers Gallagher and their musical colleagues into the stratosphere. Oasis watchers claim that the origins of their famously fraught working relationship can be traced to an early tour of America, planned to expose US audiences to the sounds of Definitely Maybe. During a gig in LA Liam (dismissively dubbed “our kid” by his more professional older brother) changed the lyrics of their hit ‘Live Forever’ to “I don’t really wanna know/Why you pick your nose”, further incensing Noel by hitting him over the head with his tambourine. Noel left Oasis, returning a few weeks later, but the early damage was already taking its toll.

Of course, there could never be a pair of brothers in the music business so riven by conflict and ill feeling, could there? No, of course not – that would be absurd. Indeed, there wasn’t until Noel and Liam Gallagher hit the scene and proved to be every bit as combative as Ray and Dave Davies. You have to feel for Liam Gallagher though. The younger and (if his media profile is anything to go by) less intelligent of the two siblings, he nonetheless founded Oasis in 1991 with Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs (guitar), Paul ‘Guigsy’ McGuigan (bass) and Tony McCarroll (drums). Liam handled the vocal aspect and, in a parallel universe, would perhaps have felt justified in considering himself the kingpin. His decision to invite his older brother Noel (who was, famously, a roadie for wellregarded Manchester band, Inspiral Carpets for a while) would prove fateful for a number of reasons, not all of them positive. While the Gallaghers’ mother – the formidable Peggy – might have been pleased to see her boys attempt a more creative path than petty crime (at the tender age of 13 Noel received six months’ probation for robbing a corner shop, while Liam developed a reputation as a first-class bicycle thief), the five years that separated the two brothers would prove problematic, as Liam tried to emerge from the shadow of his sibling who had the advantage of seniority. After securing a deal with Alan McGee’s Creation Records in 1993, an

48

In a now infamous interview later in 1994 with the NME, the brothers continually invited each other to “f*** off” – but even worse was to follow. During the recording of (What’s the Story) Morning Glory Liam invited a bunch of already lairy pub mates to the studio, where Noel was busy working with the rest of the band. Furious about his younger sibling’s conduct Noel picked up a cricket bat and proceeded to hit him over the head with it. Having finally gained some success in the USA the Oasis boys were invited to film an Unplugged set for MTV’s popular series in 1996. While the performance is still regarded as one of the band’s classic outings it wasn’t exactly incident free, with Liam abandoning vocal duties and forcing Noel to take over. Liam headed for the VIP box, from where

he enthusiastically heckled his brother throughout the performance. Fast forward to 2000 and perhaps the most vicious row to date broke out, with Liam questioning the paternity of Anaȉs, Noel’s daughter with his then girlfriend, Meg Matthews. Following this perfectly aimed insult Noel reciprocated by punching Liam in the face, splitting his lip and further fracturing their working relationship. Yet again Noel announced his departure from Oasis but returned a few days later. These days the Gallagher fall-outs are generally reserved for the press. Liam has his own band, Beady Eye, while Noel has also found success with High-Flying Birds. However, the family ties continue to exert a strong pull, with Noel proving a reliable Dorothy Parkeresque provider of amusing quotes about his brother. Liam’s contributions, however, are less erudite, dubbing Noel’s band “High-Flying Turds”. In an interview with Q Magazine Noel provided one of his most potent zingers,

claiming that Liam was “rude, arrogant, intimidating and lazy”, going on to say, “He’s the angriest man you’ll ever meet. He’s like a man with a fork in a world full of soup.” If this reminded more grizzled music critics of the ongoing aggro between Ray and Dave Davies you could hardly blame them. As The Propellerheads once presciently remarked, it’s just a little bit of history repeating. As they hit middle-age the Gallaghers seem as incapable of hanging up their boxing gloves as the self-styled Muswell Hillbillies. The rift continued during last year’s One Love concert, organised by Arianna Grande and her team to commemorate the 22 victims of the MEN Arena bombing, with Liam laying into Noel for not offering his services

for the event: “It ain’t about Oasis, it’s about people helping other people and he’s once again shown his true f******g colours”. Liam, as usual, could scarcely be accused of beating about the bush, even if his criticisms of his brother lacked Noel’s ready wit. Over Christmas 2017 a rapprochement between Liam and Noel was announced, which the former later dismissed as seasonal flim-flam put about to please his mother. “It was Christmas and Mam was getting on me. And I had a couple of drinks and I put it out there. It was me drunk,” he claimed. With musical highs like ‘Waterloo Sunset’ and ‘Live Forever’ it’s difficult to forgive the Davies and Gallagher brothers for not being able to overcome their antipathy and settle their differences. The trouble is that both relationships give every impression of having been poisoned by the younger siblings’ desperate desire for love and approval from an older and undemonstrative brother. As British philosopher Israel Zangwill once said, “It takes two men to make one brother” yet these two pairs of angry, broken individuals seem scarcely fit to make one whole person. The only thing for which we can be grateful is that, in the meantime, they have given us some wonderful music.

MARBELLA: Chris Wallem is one half of the Wallem Brothers who have enjoyed huge success here and abroad as DJs. Now, Chris has delivered a solo album called ‘Artesano’ and Society magazine talked to him about it. Why did you decide to do a solo album? I decided that I wanted to do something by myself. I felt that over the past few years I’ve been making a lot of music for other artists and I wasn’t really able to concentrate on myself as a musician. I wanted to go back to my roots and take some time to explore the kind of music that I personally enjoy making. And, I wanted music to be less of a job and more like fun. Why is it called Artesano? Basically, because it’s a homemade (artesano) product. I made it at home in my studio, where I produced, recorded and mixed it by myself. I also released it independently. So, when the word 'Artesano' came into my mind, it just made sense.

50

What did you want to explore musically?

How do you choose your collaborators?

Over the past year I've had the pleasure of meeting and working with some really talented artists, and I’ve always just been a producer, That means making beats and sending them to vocalists, but they really inspired me to start writing and singing my own stuff. So, for the past six months I’ve been in the studio practising and crafting my sound, and 'Artesano' was kind of an experiment to see what people think of my sound. I’d like to give a shout out to RJay, Tmar and Benji Dash for their inspiration. Definitely go and check out their music as well.

On this EP/Album i collaborated with the three artists I mentioned above: RJay, Tmar and Benji Dash, because it just made sense for them to be part of it as we have been vibin' together in the studio all year.

Who are your main influences for this project? As a musician on this project, I’m just trying to be me, but influences as in people who inspire me and make me get up every day to make music, are people like Dr.Dre, Pharrell, Diplo, Russ and Drake. People who put in the work to get to where they are inspire me.

What can we expect next from you? I’m currently working on my next couple of singles, which I’m planning to drop before the summer with some fresh music videos as well. So, stay tuned for that! This is only the beginning.

Jukebox THE NEW GOLDEN AGE OF THE

Musical By KJ Elsdon

52

W

hich is your favourite musical? Is it the old-

fashioned romance of a Rogers and Hammerstein creation or the witty, New York sophistication of a Stephen Sondheim composition? Most of us will be able to name at least one musical that we can happily enjoy again and again, whether this involves the street gangs of NYC (West Side Story), Argentina’s political crises of the 1940s and 1950s (Evita) or the child-minding career of a former nun (The Sound of Music). A well-written and enthusiastically received musical is a joy forever, but the drawback is that they tend to be insanely expensive to stage – and there is no guarantee that they will recoup their costs.

When Andrew Lloyd Webber sat down to write his account of osteopath Stephen Ward’s part in the infamous Profumo case he could be excused for imagining that this would be a sure-fire hit. With a story that had everything going for it, from beautiful women and political scandal to Lloyd Webber’s ability to create great music, showcasing witty, intelligent lyrics by Don Black and playwright Christopher Hampton taking over duties on the book, it was natural to assume that Stephen Ward would enjoy the same success as Cats or The Phantom of the Opera. In the event it sank like a stone, closing after receiving reviews that can be most charitably described as ‘mixed’ and failing to attract the ticket sales of previous Lloyd Webber outings.

Taking these factors into account, how does a theatrical impresario go about creating a crowd-pleasing night out while minimising any financial risk? Well, one way he or she might choose is to think about producing a jukebox musical. These might be more common these days (the latest, based on the career of Tina Turner, opened in London’s Aldwych Theatre recently) but they are by no means a new phenomenon. In fact, the first jukebox musical is thought to have been staged on Broadway in 1975. Based on the songs of the wonderfully talented Harry Chapin, The Night That Made America Famous starred Chapin and his brothers, Tom and Stephen, among others. The show ran for only 47 performances but is nonetheless an important milestone. Other famous early jukebox musicals include 1989’s Return to the Forbidden Planet, which showcased the best of 1960s rock and roll and 1990’s Five Guys Named Moe, which performed the same function for the music of Louis Jordan. The overwhelming popularity of these shows, packed with familiar songs, led theatrical producers to roll up their sleeves to see how they could profit from this appetite for the familiar and tried and tested. Over the past few years the jukebox musical has gained traction, with many theatres in London’s West End and New York’s Broadway featuring key examples of the genre. Here are some of the highlights – along with an unexpected failure.

The Hits

53

(2002)

(1999) This whacky, sunny natured compilation of some of ABBA’s greatest hits is still the behemoth of the jukebox musical. Along with Catherine Johnson’s frothy, romantic script and some of the best pop songs every written, it’s no surprise to find that Mamma Mia has not only spawned two feature films but is still attracting audiences to theatres worldwide. If the old adage ‘bums on seats’ remains the aim of every theatrical production, then this candyfloss confection has done more than its fair share to earn its place as the greatest jukebox musical of all time.

Bringing rock’s most bombastic excesses to the world of mainstream pop and boasting a brilliant, mercurial (in every sense of the word) singer who was the first and, to date, only gay Asian international musical superstar, it’s not surprising to learn that there is still a lot of love for Queen. Despite some excoriating opening night reviews and an admittedly cheesy book from Ben Elton, We Will Rock You defied all predictions to become a serious rival to Mamma Mia’s dominance. When WWRY finally bowed out in May 2014 after a 12-year run it became the 10th longest-running musical in West End history; however various productions are still active around the world.

Musical Highlights:

‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Super Trouper’, ‘The Name of the Game’, ‘Winner Takes It All’, ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)’, Knowing Me, Knowing You’.

(2005)

If you were alive during the 1960s and 1970s then Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons will have provided a decent section of the soundtrack of your life, so a musical based on their best songs was a no-brainer. Jersey Boys’s book (written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice) cleverly divides the story of the band into four sections or ‘seasons’, with a different narrator for each. Jersey Boys ran from 2005 to 2017 on Broadway, picking up four Tony Awards and, on its 2009 West End debut, a Laurence Olivier Award. Jersey Boys continues to be a reliable audience magnet, with many productions still running internationally.

Musical Highlights:

‘Radio Ga Ga’. ‘Killer Queen’, ‘A Kind of Magic’, ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, ‘Another One Bites the Dust’, ‘We Are the Champions’.

(2007)

The wailing and gnashing of teeth that occurred when teen favourites, Take That, announced that they were calling it a day must have been somewhat assuaged by this celebration of their finest moments, not to mention their timely reunion in 2006. With a book created by top TV writer Danny Brocklehurst, Never Forget premiered at Cardiff’s Millennium Centre in July 2007, finally opening at London’s Savoy Theatre in May 2008. It didn’t exactly set the world on fire, closing in November of the same year, but this could well be blamed on the distraction of the real band’s new material and appearances.

Musical Highlights:

‘Pray’, ‘It Only Takes a Minute’, ‘Back for Good’, ‘Relight My Fire’, ‘A Million Love Songs’, ‘Never Forget’.

Musical Highlights:

‘Sherry’, ‘Big Boys Don’t Cry’, ‘Walk Like a Man’, ‘December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)’ ‘My Eyes Adored You’, ‘Beggin’’, ‘Let’s Hold On (To What We’ve Got)’, ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’, ‘Working My Way Back to You’, ‘Rag Doll’, ‘Who Loves You’.

(2007)

As The Proclaimers, twins Craig and Charlie Reid have written some of the best loved – and catchiest – songs of the 20th century, so a jukebox musical featuring their hits was almost inevitable. The story of Sunshine on Leith concerns two soldiers returning to their Scottish hometown to resume their relationships with their families and friends but, naturally, not everything is straightforward. The original stage production was awarded a TMA Award for Best Musical in 2007 and has proved a favourite production for further education arts colleges. In 2013 a movie was released and received favourable critical notices and decent box office takings.

Musical Highlights:

‘I’m On My Way’, ‘Make My Heart Fly’, ‘Let’s Get Married’, ‘Oh Jean’, ‘Then I Met You’, ‘Should Have Been Loved’, ‘Sunshine on Leith’, ‘Letter From America’, ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’.

(2008)

Showcasing the hits of 1970s chart success, David Essex the title of All the Fun of the Fair was taken from his 1975 album and revolves around the lives of fairground worker Levi Lee, who is having more than a little trouble with his rebellious teenage son. The show, which was a sure-fire hit with all the now middle-aged women who had salivated over David Essex during his glory days, toured the UK before settling at London’s Garrick Theatre for a limited run.

Musical Highlights:

‘A Winter’s Tale’, ‘Hold Me Close’, ‘Rock On’, ‘Me and My Girl (Nighclubbing)’, ‘Gonna Make You a Star’, ‘If I Could’, ‘Silver Dream Machine’.

(2016)

As one of the more sophisticated jukebox musicals of recent years, Lazarus was one of the last major projects with which the late and muchlamented David Bowie was involved. The book, by Enda Walsh, presented itself as a sequel of Nicolas Roeg’s 1976 film adaptation of Walter Tevis’s novel, The Man Who Fell to Earth and featured some of Bowie’s most memorable songs, along with a few new compositions. The show received mixed reviews, but its short run (which was marked by the terminally ill Bowie’s last public appearance) attracted thousands of die-hard fans.

Musical Highlights:

‘This is Not America’, ‘The Man Who Sold the World’, ‘Changes’, ‘Where Are We Now?’ ‘Absolute Beginners’, ‘Life on Mars?’, ‘All the Young Dudes’, ‘Sound and Vision’, ‘Heroes’.

...And one surprising miss (2012)

With the hits of the Spice Girls and a lively book by AbFab’s Jennifer Saunders, it’s difficult to imagine how Viva Forever! could have been such a turkey. Opening to full media fanfare at the West End’s Piccadilly Theatre in December 2012 it attracted the worst reviews of the year, limping on for only seven months before closing on the 29th of June 2013. It just goes to show that you can have all the right ingredients for a hit but, if it lacks that indefinable spark, it’s dead in the water. The critics who had panned We Will Rock You were forced to admit that they underestimated the power of Queen, but the collective pull of Scary, Sporty, Baby, Posh and Ginger was clearly not enough to save the show. This was a jukebox musical too far.

Musical Highlights:

‘Wannabe’, ‘Too Much’, ‘Stop’, ‘Say You’ll Be There’, ‘Goodbye’, ‘Mama’, ‘Who Do You Think You Are’, ‘Spice Up Your Life’, ‘Viva Forever’, ‘2 Become 1’.

Pictures The Outsider by Stephen King

Mus Readt

When an eleven-year-old boy is found murdered in a town park, reliable eyewitnesses undeniably point to the town's popular Little League coach, Terry Maitland, as the culprit. DNA evidence and fingerprints confirm the crime was committed by this well-loved family man.

Whether you enjoy curling up with a good book or enjoying downtime with a drama series, KJ Elsdon bring you the top titles and series from the entertaining world of books and television. The Handmaid’s Tale

The first season caused a sensation, so we’re very excited to be welcoming The Handmaid’s Tale back for its second series. To say that we’re looking forward to it would be the understatement of the century, especially after hearing a few teasers from showrunner, Bruce Miller. Apparently, the issue of race will be tackled and Miller has hinted that viewers would be able to meet Offred’s mother. It has also been rumoured that Drake will be making an appearance. In any case, if the second series maintains the suspense of season one, we will most definitely be tuning in.

Horrified by the brutal killing, Detective Ralph Anderson, whose own son was once coached by Maitland, orders the suspect to be arrested in a public spectacle. But Maitland has an alibi. And further research confirms he was indeed out of town that day. As Anderson and the District Attorney trace the clues, the investigation expands from Ohio to Texas. And as horrifying answers begin to emerge, so King's propulsive story of almost unbearable suspense kicks into high gear. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy but there is one rock-hard fact, as unassailable as gravity: a man cannot be in two places at the same time. Can he?

Arnhem: The Battle for the Bridges, 1944 by Antony Beevor

On 17 September 1944, General Kurt Student, the founder of Nazi Germany's parachute forces, heard the growing roar of aero engines. He went out on to his balcony above the flat landscape of southern Holland to watch the vast air armada of Dakotas and gliders, carrying the British 1st Airborne and the American 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. Operation Market Garden, the plan to end the war by capturing the bridges leading to the Lower Rhine and beyond, was a bold concept: the Americans thought it unusually bold for Field Marshal Montgomery. But the cost of failure was horrendous, above all for the Dutch who risked everything to help.

56

The British fascination for heroic failure has clouded the story of Arnhem in myths, not least that victory was possible when in fact the plan imposed by Montgomery and General 'Boy' Browning was doomed from the start. Antony Beevor, using many overlooked and new sources from Dutch, British, American, Polish and German archives, has reconstructed the terrible reality of this epic clash.

Bulletproof The Bridge

Honouring not only its lasting popularity but its importance in introducing British audiences to the joys of Scandi-Noir, Swedish-Danish police drama The Bridge returns to UK screens in May for its fourth and final season – but this time on BBC Two. Previously exiled to the outer limits of BBC Four, BBC bosses decided to give The Bridge a passport to primetime for its curtain call. Sofia Helin is back as Swedish detective Saga Norén, while Thure Lindhart reprises his role as her Danish counterpart, Henrik Sabroe. Rumours are that this final series picks up where the last left off but is set two years later. We are very excited about this one!

There are few things more enjoyable than settling down to a new police drama and this latest offering looks likely to hit all the right spots. A mix of comedy, drama and action, Bulletproof will feature Noel Clarke and Ashley Walters as police duo, Bishop and Pike, two best friends bonded by a shared moral code, despite their differences. Growing up, Bishop (Clarke) and Pike (Walters) had very different lives. Pike’s dad was the first black police commissioner, while Bishop grew up looking for a father figure as he was passed around foster homes, moving from school to school. Bulletproof charts the point at which their friendship is put to the test.

magine a structure made of meticulously arranged chunks of stone. Towering from the earth, it houses myriad strange objects strewn across its base, hanging from its canopy, projected from its ramparts. Daubed characters and humming lights attract passing bipedal organisms who enter this bewildering nook and oscillate in hushed contemplation, eventually handing its homogeneously-garbed inhabitants sheafs of wafer thin tree mulch in exchange for the wonders within. As they leave, they are replaced by similar lifeforms and the ritual repeats. If this all sounds a little bizarre, it's because I'm describing something so far removed from our present-day existence, you've probably forgotten it ever existed. I'm writing about a shop (pronounced “shop”)

and shops were as commonplace as teenagers texting in a cinema. No one could have anticipated a day where the only thing left standing in city centres would be nail bars, vape emporiums, Tesco/Sainsbury/Asda/Co-op/Morrisons// Waitrose Locals and those guys painted gold who only move when you give them a quid. So what happened? What cataclysmic event wiped shops off the high street and out of the public consciousness so decisively? Just ask Amazon, the cheeky wee multibillion-BILLION dollar so-and-so - That's right, the e-commerce giant who's still expanding at roughly the same rate as the rainforest whose name they nicked is shrinking. What's more, they've managed to do so whilst paying even less taxes than the monkeys, snakes and unnecessarily poisonous little tree frogs currently being turfed out of their homes. I might be coming off a bit judgey, but I’m also a hypocrite - I've been a paid up Amazon Prime member for years now. It's the best way to buy things you don't really need with money you don't really have, two hours and a bottle of wine after you should really have gone to bed. In fairness, it's also extremely convenient. Most of our household appliances, the equipment for my photography business, toys for

Shops were a common feature of the landscape in my youth. They came in all shapes and sizes, positively thriving on the verdant economics of the high street like wild herds on the Savannah. Timid, fleet-footed shops such as Dixons skirted urban centres, nibbling enthusiastically at the public's pockets while great, lumbering behemoths like MFI occupied industrialized lowlands, lazily basking in their own untouchable grandeur. Seasons came and seasons went. Wind, rain, snow, very occasional sun, lunar eclipses, solar eclipses... total eclipses of the heart. Nothing threatened this vibrant ecosystem... EVEN GOD except Sundays of course. WAS O N L Everything bloody well shut Y ABL E TO KEEP S on Sundays. our son and even toilet paper come from these callous shop-killers. Seriously, we get 45 rolls at a time on offer and after an almighty game of giant Jenga on delivery day, the majority go in the cupboard and we don't have to worry about running out for the next few months. If that's not worth a few less tree frogs in the world, I don't know what is. Let's face it, toilet paper is one of the bulkiest, most embarrassingly conspicuous things to carry back from town. We all poo (Our readership research suggests you're probably doing one right now), but there's no need to telegraph that news to everyone you pass on the way home. How often do you see sex symbols like George Clooney or Beyonce sashaying down the red carpet with 18 rolls of Andrex underarm? Almost never.

AMAZON IS THE SOLE REASON 99.7% OF ALL SHOPS HAVE CLOSED DOWN IN THE LAST DECADE. THE OTHER 0.3% WAS WOODWORM. OK, so maybe you get yours at Mercadona, but if you think you've not supported Amazon, think again; Who do you reckon sold you those reading glasses perched on the tip of your nose right now? Who flogged you that comfy sofa you're lounging on while you read this fine publication? The 2 litre cocktail glass in your other hand? That goldplated back-scratcher? The silver-plated gold-plated-back-scratcher reacher you use when you can't be arsed to get up off the comfy sofa? Where do you think I bought the laptop I wrote this article on? Or the Absinthe I drank while doing so? Who sold SOCIETY the faintly radioactive much-cheaper-than-the-safe-stuff ink we used to print all these magazines? Or the baseball bats we routinely threaten our competitors with? Fucking AMAZON, that's who! They'll deliver practically anything to your doorstep within 48 hours. Probably the only thing in your immediate vicinity not purchased there are the paper pages of this mag.... they came from the other Amazon and took much longer to get here. Without exaggeration of any kind, Amazon is the SOLE reason 99.7% of all shops have closed down in the last decade. The other 0.3% was woodworm.

Even God was only able to keep shops quiet one day a week way back. Amazon manages to close down hundreds day in, day out. Conclusion: AMAZON > GOD. I went to a Catholic primary school and was physically shaken by an angry nun on more than one occasion, so I wouldn't be so quick to blaspheme if I hadn't just purchased a 5 star Smiteproof hat on Prime for under a oner I've no doubt it'll arrive long before the lightning bolt. So, should we lament the death of the high street or embrace this new normal? Your answer to that may depend on whether or not you once ran a shop for your livelihood or want some live ants sharpish and can't be bothered to coat yourself in sugar and lay on a pavement like the rest of us (SO lazy). Incidentally, Amazon charge more for the shipping costs of the ants than the ants themselves, which must be an extra knock to the self-worth of the poor buggers (especially since they don't exactly weigh much). On the topic of self-worth, the increasingly commonplace use of robots for dispatching inventory in the retailer's vast warehouses can't be doing much for the self-esteem of the dwindling ranks of human employees. One only need watch The Matrix or Terminator (both

available on Amazon) to see where this is all leading. What's more, the already harassed and underpaid delivery drivers are in some cases soon to be replaced by drones, no longer simply the reserve of neighbourwatching perverts and wedding photographers who don't honestly think an incredibly loud, high pitch whine akin to a wasp swarm in a blender ruins an otherwise perfect day. But Amazon aren't just a retailer, they're at the forefront of technology. Their adaptability and response to market is staggering. Hundreds of apps can detect what we say through our phones' microphones, resulting in freakishly “coincidental advertising next time we go online. For data-mining, ad-funded online platforms such as Facebook, we're the product to be sold to the highest bidder. It's scarily impressive how responsive and targeted retailers have become as a result.

way home in the car each time) but you wouldn't be slagging anyone off on social media or ordering online instead, because neither of those was a thing yet. It almost makes me nostalgic. For consumers, the high street represented a truly golden age of like-it or lump-it.... But then I suppose we had more time for the lumps because we weren't so busy trying to get likes. RESEARCH FINDS FACIAL COLOURS

Not Just Expressions, Convey Emotions

H

umans are clearly wired to detect and decode non-verbal communication cues from others. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans also demonstrate that the brain notices inconsistencies between verbal and non-verbal communication. We also tend to be quite accurate when gleaning information about someone from first impressions. After all, the brain absorbs information through the senses (eyes, ears, etc.) and is able to evaluate it rapidly.

60

Such innate skills do a number of things for us. They help keep us safe when we encounter someone threatening. For example, if you notice from afar that the person approaching looks aggressive, you may choose to walk a different path to avoid potential danger. When people lie with their words, or even their follow-up actions if they are extra savvy liars or sociopaths, you can still glean information that is inconsistent and those inconsistencies also speak volumes about their true intentions.

Then there are people who are unsure of how they feel and that is where a friend or coach can say, “Well, I know you said you want this but your body language is saying you actually want that instead. Sometimes in a meeting we know when we have been making our point for too long if someone has begun fidgeting, thus helping us to form a better rapport with business associates and get ahead in our career.

THE PARTICIPANTS GUESSED RIGHT MOST OF THE TIME. FOR EXAMPLE, THOSE COLOURED TO LOOK HAPPY WERE CORRECTLY GUESSED ABOUT 70 PER CENT OF THE TIME AND THOSE COLOURED TO LOOK SAD WERE CORRECTLY GUESSED ABOUT 75% OF THE TIME.

Other times we can look across a room at a party and realise our friend needs rescuing from the conversation they are not enjoying but struggling to excuse themselves from. We can also use people’s verbal and non-verbal communication on their social media accounts to know their intentions, personality, moods and honesty. Non-verbal communication is king, whether online or offline. People say a lot without uttering a single word and we use it for our personal wellbeing, success and survival and for the well-being, success and survival of our loved ones. But when we think of non-verbal communication we tend to think of things like facial expressions and body language. Now, new research demonstrates that we have the ability correctly to gauge people’s emotions instantly from the different colours and locations of colour in people’s faces! We can immediately work out, for example, whether people are happy, sad, angry or experiencing disgust, purely, researchers suspect, from blood flow changes that occur and show up on the face. In this study by Benitez-Quiroz et al. (2018), researchers presented participants with the same image of a neutral face but altered the colours and placement of colours on those images. They found that people were able correctly to identify the emotion solely from the colour and its placement, even though the facial expression itself was neutral and remained unchanged. To test this, they showed 184 neutral faces and offered a list of 18 emotions to choose from such as ‘happy’ and ‘sad’ and more complex ones such as ‘sadly angry’ and ‘happily surprised’. They overlaid the neutral faces with colours our eyes see: red-green and blue-yellow variations. They placed the colours in regions around the nose, eyebrows, cheeks and chin. The participants guessed right most of the time. For example, those coloured to look happy were correctly guessed

about 70 per cent of the time and those coloured to look sad were correctly guessed about 75 per cent of the time. When the researchers mixed the colours and placement around to make them unrepresentative of reality, the participants also noticed that these faces looked ‘off’. In other words, their brain noticed an incongruence even if they couldn’t pinpoint what seemed ‘off’ - they just knew they looked odd and didn’t represent an emotion. So, clearly, we do detect emotions from colour alone, even in the absence of identifying facial expressions. That’s how perceptive and evaluative your brain is - it can detect a person’s emotions solely from colour and its placement! The researchers noted that there is some truth to those old sayings such as: ‘He argued until he was “blue in the face”’ (he felt and looked angry) ‘You look “green around the gills”’ (you’re conveying a feeling of disgust) ‘She was a “blushing bride”’ (she was the picture of happiness) Researchers state that rather than being monochromatic, touches of red, green, blue and yellow show up to characterise every emotion, just in slightly different amounts and locations on the face. For example, they found that disgust creates a blue-yellow colour around the lips with a red-green colour around the nose and forehead. They have even managed to create software that correctly identifies human emotion about 90 per cent of the time solely based on colour hues and locations on the face, which means that no matter our ethnicity (as per the report), we all convey each emotion with certain colours and locations that are identifiable by others.

YOU CAN WORK OUT SOMEONE’S TRUE INTENTIONS (A) WITHIN A FEW MINUTES OF SCANNING THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES AND ACTIVITY AND (B) WITHIN A FEW MINUTES OR FIVE TO FIFTEEN MINUTES OF CONVERSING FACE-TO-FACE, WHO THEY ARE AND WHY THEY HAVE REALLY KNOCKED ON THE DOOR OF YOUR LIFE.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

APPLICATION TO YOUR LIFE We live in a world where we are globally inter-connected and this means we now come into contact with far more strangers than we used to and among those strangers are many deceivers: people lying about who they are, what their true personality is and what their true intentions are. You only need to glance at social media or speak to someone on a dating app to know that this is the case. The world is full of people pretending to be someone they are not so if you are concerned about your mental or physical well-being or safety and want to know what is in someone’s heart: Look at their online photos and videos if you can; If you are communicating one-to-one, use a video messaging service like Skype or meet up with them in person (in a safe place); trust your intuition. Once you get those visual cues, you can know from their facial colours and facial and bodily expressions, what’s really in their heart. You can work out someone’s true intentions (a) within a few minutes of scanning their social media profiles and activity and (b) within a few minutes or five to fifteen minutes of conversing faceto-face, who they are and why they have really knocked on the door of your life. However, some people are more devious than you would expect them to be; those people may require a bit more of your time but again, all you scan for and evaluate is (i) verbal communication, (ii) nonverbal communication, (iii) actions, (iv) inconsistencies, and (v) anomalies, and you will learn everything you need to know. Keep your eyes and ears open and stay safe by nurturing the right relationships and distancing yourself from the wrong ones.

BODY & BOOTY T R A N S F O R M AT I O N For Big Brother Star

SALLIE AXL at

A

lways welcoming a range of well-known faces, Sallie Axl has been Cirumed’s latest guest and is best known for her appearance on Big Brother in 2013. After having a baby and not feeling comfortable with her body, Sallie found Cirumed clinic through careful research and chose to undergo her body transformation surgery. Cirumed was highly recommended, which gave her the confidence that she would achieve great results under the team’s elite care and give her the body she dreamed of as well as an extra confidence boost.

DR. ASLANI IS WELL KNOWN IN THE UK FOR BODY CONTOURING AND HIS VERY POPULAR BIKINI MAKEOVER PACKAGE. There is an abundance of clinics to choose from, but thanks to Dr. Aslani’s specialisation and excellent reviews by former clients, Sallie knew that Marbella was where she needed to be to score her dream body. To further her confidence in the decision, Sallie also knew that Dr. Aslani is well known in the UK for body contouring and his very popular bikini makeover package. Dr. Aslani has been in the game for over a decade and was one of the first few to offer buttock augmentation procedures, which undoubtedly has helped him become a leader in his field. He performs around three to four buttock augmentation surgeries daily, demonstrating not only the high demand for this procedure, but also his credibility in the field. He is regularly invited to be a guest speaker at conferences worldwide where he showcases his abilities for teaching purposes. He is also hosting his sixth annual Live Surgery course in which globally recognised surgeons are the chief participants. Sallie was welcomed to Cirumed by the friendly team who showed her the impressive facilities including the new extension. The Clinic now has two operating theatres, five patient suites, two recovery suites and the Cirumed Lounge where families or friends of patients can enjoy fresh coffee and cake while waiting. In the new space, Cirumed Clinic has proudly installed top-of-the-range equipment, including a Laminar Flow System that allows air to move at the

same speed and in the same direction with no or minimal cross-over of airstreams. It also has special operating tables ideal for the combination surgeries, which allows patients to be “flipped” with ease during surgery. This is efficient when performing combination surgery that works on areas such as breasts, abdomen, back and buttocks simultaneously. Sallie praised Dr. Aslani for his thorough consultation, which was carried out online before her arrival in Marbella, allowing her to experience the reassurance of a face-to-face consultation from the comfort of her own home in the UK. Sallie also appreciated the fact that Dr. Aslani took an interest in her wishes and said, “Many people like the conservative look, but there are people out there who don’t want a conservative look. I know what I want and Dr. Aslani gave that to me”. With help from Serene Cosmetic, Sallie didn’t have to worry about flights, accommodation, food or transport and could focus on preparing for the surgery. “Having a surgery abroad is quite scary anyway, but I’ve been made to feel so at ease by Serene Cosmetic”.

"I HAD A REALLY BOYISH, SQUARE SHAPED BODY BEFORE, BUT NOW I’M SO PLEASED WITH MY FIGURE. I LOVE IT!” and the procedure was carried out swiftly, whilst avoiding any potential complications, in order to get Sallie back home to her baby in the fastest time possible. The team is proud that they were able to make Sallie feel relaxed, and even more so that they were able to give her the body she wanted. “I had a really boyish, square shaped body before, but now I’m so pleased with my figure. I love it!” Cirumed takes special care throughout the whole patient experience starting from their first

A good example of this is a dumbbell loaded single leg calf raise – I like this option as it allows you to train each calf individually to help even out differences between sides, plus you only require minimal equipment.

THE CALVES

This week I’m going to keep things short and sweet and focus on the final area of the lower body for this series - the calves. For recreational exercisers, I tend to view training the calves in a similar way to training the arms. What I mean by this is I will prioritise the lower body work mentioned in previous articles and use isolated calf exercises as a ‘cherry on the cake’ if the training schedule permits it. This is not to discredit the importance of targeted calf work as for a lot of men this can be an area of the lower body that can often seem to be less responsive. The calves are made up of two muscles - the gastrocnemius which is the larger of the two and gives the calves their superficial shape. And the soleus which is a smaller, flatter muscle that lies underneath the gastrocnemius.

68

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

The gastrocnemius crosses both the knee and ankle joint, so it will tend to be more active during exercises when the legs are straight. • A good example of this is a dumbbell loaded single leg calf raise – I like this option as it allows you to train each calf individually to help even out differences between sides, plus you only require minimal equipment. To perform this exercise, stand on the edge of a low step (or anything that allows you to lower your heel below the level of your toes), while holding a dumbbell in one hand (you can use your free hand to hold on to something for stability). Unweight the foot opposite to the hand holding the weight and push up on to your tip toes with your stance leg. Then slowly lower your heel down until it has passes the level of the step and you feel a slight stretch in the calf. Next, push down with the toes again, raising the heel as high as you can go. Aim for a 3-4 second lowering phase and a 1-2 second lifting phase. 3-4 sets of 10 reps at the end of your leg workout should do the trick. The soleus, on the other hand, only crosses the ankle joint and therefore tends to be more active during calf exercises when the knees are bent. • A good option for working the soleus is therefore the seated calf raise. Some gyms will have specific bits of equipment to perform this exercise, but you can also use dumbbells and a bench if you don’t have access to a machine. To set up using dumbbells, simply sit on the end of a bench with your knees bent and your feet planted on the floor in front of you. Rest a dumbbell upright on each thigh and hold them in place with each hand. From this position, push the toes into the ground and raise the heels off the floor. Then control the lowering of the heels back down to the ground to complete a rep. Again, aim for a 3-4 second lowering phase and a 1-2 second lifting phase. You can pair this exercise with the single leg calf raises mentioned above in a superset, where you complete a set of 10 reps on each before resting for 60-90 seconds and then repeating for 3-4 sets.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mind-blowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

Hair Raising Innovations This month Jonathan reviews the latest products making waves in the hair industry. We also find out about one of the team's hidden talents.

74

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Reboot your look in less time

L’Oréal has just brought out a new product called Instant Highlights which I think is going to be promising. The game-changing hair dye technique lets you nab A-list highlights in under 60 minutes. Yes - you heard me correctly. The pro heat lightening system is designed to give up to six levels of lift in half the time. If the thought of an impending three hour plus salon visit fills you with dread, you are not alone. Forty per cent of women agree that, although financially, they can afford to have their hair dyed, time wise they're short on capital, with one in five avoiding salon trips altogether. With traditional highlights you must wait around 45 minutes for the lightening cream to develop, but L'Oréal's new system means that your hair will lighten in 15-30 seconds. I have to admit I was intrigued when I first heard about L'Oréal's latest invention but, being the ultimate pessimist, I thought it would be like instant coffee; fast but, in reality, disappointingly bitter. The actual concept is more express highlights than instant highlights and that’s music to my ears. The demand for speedy services is higher than ever, due to our fast-paced lifestyles. So, here's the deal - it won't replace your full head of highlights (because the whole point is not to take an entire day), It’s a few highlights, (up to 15 packs) which would be a scattering along the hairline or a few throughout the top section. The three-part system, (lightening cream, foils and heated iron) is designed specifically for this service and can't be used for other hair dye techniques. The lightening cream, when applied, develops on your hair to lift the colour just like ordinary highlights would. This effect is then boosted when the heated iron is applied, meaning the whole process is much faster. The foils keep everything controlled and even, so

Let’s make up

She’s a dark horse, that Ariela, hiding her little light under her bushel. Obviously, she is SXXT hot with nails, we all know that already with all that amazing nail art which she turns out daily, requiring infinite patience and skill. Well, this month I discovered that she ain’t half bad with a bit of mascara and lippie. Yep, she just dropped it into conversation like it was nothing. So, me being me, I set her straight to work and was gobsmacked when she managed to make Katerina - aka Dr Zhivago’s daughter - look like a person. Considering she had been on the lash for two days straight this was no small feat. To say her skin was dehydrated would be an understatement. The result can only be described as magical. At one point I didn’t know if she was using a blusher brush or a magic wand. I now have just got to convince her to start doing more of it in the salon. Watch this space.

Maximize your moisture

Cure dry hair in the convenience of your home, and you can thank me after! I have been playing with Redken’s NEW All Soft Mega superfood-infused haircare system, which was specifically designed to soften, nourish and replenish severely dry hair and I have to say I really like it. It is massively moisturising and has the capability to revive even the driest of manes. I actually really love this range on naturally curly hair. Infused with a nourishing superfood mix of sacha inchi extract, aloe vera gel, cactus extract, and Redken’s exclusive ROOT-CORETIP (RCT) Protein Complex to treat hair from the root to the core to the tip, dry, coarse and unmanageable hair can now be touchably soft,

smooth and full of shine. The only thing with it is you must be careful with the amount that you use and please, please, please make sure you give it a really good rinse. This range is not for everyone, I will tell you now. Yes, it is moisturising but so much so that it could be guilty of weighing the hair down. This is, of course, fine if your hair looks like it has been dragged through a hedge backwards, but if you’re the kind of person who needs a little volume in your life, then give this a miss. You could end up looking like Neil from the Young Ones.

Ta-Ra Love.....

Jonathan

A lunchtime lift, if you like! In 90 minutes you could be in, coloured and blown to perfection, just in time to untie the kids before social services get wind of it. the lightening effect is consistent. Sceptical as I am of anyone claiming to have reinvented a tried and tested colour technique, I was pleasantly surprised by the results. Instant Highlights is designed to be a speedy service, so this isn't your regular 'full head of highlights' treatment. Who would this suit? Well, if you have left the kids tied up on the back terrace with the washing and are looking for something to give you a quick lift that doesn't involve surgery or cava, then this could be for you. A lunchtime lift, if you like! In 90 minutes you could be in, coloured and blown to perfection, just in time to untie the kids before social services get wind of it. Those drawn to the low-maintenance appeal of Balayage will love this, as will those who are new to hair colour or are looking for a new colour switch-up. Remember, it is still a weak bleaching agent, so it needs to be treated with respect. Bleach is not known for its conditioning properties!

That's 'Amore'... We attended:

Virginia Macari’s Fashion Show lunch at the Puente Romano’s Sea Grill restaurant. This celebrated her fifth couture swimwear collection. Distinguished guests included Millie Mackintosh, now a well-established beauty and fitness icon, Guess model Mina Milutinovic, and celebrity DJ Cristina Tosio plus many other fashion influencers. Not only was the show wonderful, Triple A animal rescue centre also received a very generous donation, which was an added bonus.

We loved:

The bold new Amore collection from Virginia Macari, which displays the same elegance, femininity and sophistication as seen in her earlier collections. And, the food and refreshments served by the Sea Grill staff were wonderful as always.

Congratulations and a big thanks:

Virginai Macari and Jana Pulk for organising this hugely enjoyable fashion and lunch event.

After the long, wet winter we’ve just had on the Coast, I think it’s safe to say we’re all ready for summer. But first, with Spring in full swing, it’s time to refresh, renovate and reimagine our outdoor spaces.

Let’s make sure your outdoor space is ready for another sun-drenched, mojitos in hand and feet in the sand, kind of summer.

Inside Out Rita van Dijk, founder Villa25

I’m sure you’ve heard designers talk a lot about bringing the outdoors in. But in Marbella, our warmer climate means we’re flipping that concept on its head and bringing the indoors out. TORQUE TALK

SIX MONTHS LATER, ON SEPTEMBER 27TH, PORSCHE RETURNED THE FAVOUR WHEN THE NEW GT2 RS SET A BLAZING 6:47.30 MIN LAP TIME, TOPPLING THE LAMBORGHINI’S RECORD BY AN EQUAL AMOUNT. 124

TORQUE TALK

Five seconds is an eternity at the Nürburgring Nordscheife, where a new lap record can be a king maker. In October last year, the Lamborghini Huracán Performante blitzed the Porsche 918 Spyder’s three-year old production sportcar lap record by five seconds, when it clocked the amazing 6:52.01 minute lap that was not officially announced until the cars debut at the Geneva Show in March this year. Six months later, on September 27th, Porsche returned the favour when the new GT2 RS set a blazing 6:47.30 min lap time, toppling the Lamborghini’s record by an equal amount. But just as impressive as its sheer pace is the fact that Porsche’s new ‘Ring champion is rear-wheel-drive, whereas the 918 Spyder and Huracán Performante both rely on all-wheel-drive for optimum traction. In a massive break with tradition, Porsche have jumped straight to the 991.2 GT2 RS this time round, leapfrogging a standard GT2 model. The reason for this is quite simple according to Andreas Preuninger, Director of GT cars. “The current Turbo S is so fast and competent that had we made a 620 or 640 hp GT2 it would have been rather lukewarm. So we decided to wait a while and develop a special car that would genuinely raise the bar.” Aesthetically, the new GT2 RS is as wild and aggressive looking in its own way as the car that kicked off the Porsche GT2 family 21 years ago. While your eyes home in on the front fender vents that come straight from the GT3 RS, and the tall motorsport sized rear wing, you are soon drawn back to the massive air intakes in the front bumper and its prominent lip spoiler.

These big intakes are not just for show as a twin-turbocharged motor making 700 hp burns a lot of fuel that in turn makes an awful lot of heat that has to go somewhere. These radiators are the same units used by the GT3 RS and Turbo S; one big water radiator on each side of the front and one in the centre. Only the outer radiators have thermostatically controlled electric fans, which have been uprated to 600 watt each. The only other physical change here is the much bigger air intakes on the front bumper to get more ram air to the radiators. The bespoke water-cooled intercoolers are both larger and thicker than the Turbo S units, and have around 10% more efficiency. The ram air from the intakes behind the doors is channelled via larger pipes over the big rear wheels. Charge air temperature is an issue with this level of power and the cooler the intake air, the more power can be produced and the lower the thermal load on the engine. To this end, the engineers came up with a water spray system for the intercoolers, which mists them when the intake temperature reaches 50 degrees C. This computer-controlled system also looks at the temperature gradient and directs the appropriate amount of water from the 5.0 litre reservoir. The result is a very significant reduction in intake temperature by up to 20 degrees C. This allows peak performance to be sustained on track even in high ambient temperatures. The two bespoke turbochargers feature larger turbine and compressor wheels required for this engine’s significantly greater output. Both the engine and the

7-speed PDK gearbox have uprated oil coolers to help them withstand sustained track driving. The big numbers are 700 hp at 7,000rpm and 750 Nm of torque from 2,500 to 4,500rpm. That rockets the 1,470 kg GT2 RS to 100 km/h in 2.7 sec, to 160 km/h in 5.8 sec, to 200 km/h in 8.3 sec, and on to a 340 km/h top speed. Delivering this much power and torque to the tarmac requires a rather special chassis. The man behind the set up is Holger Bartels, whose work on the 918 Spyder, GT3 RS and 991.2 GT3 can only be described as outstanding. Uwe Braun, Manager, Complete Vehicle Motorsport GT Model Line, explained that Porsche never uses just one source for tyres. “The GT2 RS uses the latest Michelin Cup 2 tyres alongside the equivalent Dunlop Sport MAXX. While they are the same size as on the GT3 RS and the 918 Spyder, these tyres were specially developed for the GT2 RS whose different load and power characteristics make this a necessity.”

The tyres were developed in combination with the suspension, which is fundamentally similar to the GT3 RS, but has been further developed to work optimally with the different aerodynamics and power. “A lot of work was done on the rear suspension which has to bear the brunt of the more powerful engine,” said Uwe. “With so much power on tap, traction was a priority along with decent ride comfort for road use.” “We use unique Uniball suspension bushes here along with completely different spring and damper rates. While the GT3 RS has spring rates of 45 Nm/ mm in front and 120 Nm/mm at the rear, the GT2 RS springs are rated at 100 and 160 Nm/mm respectively, which is similar to the Cup car,” he explained. “With such stiff springs supporting the car we then had a lot of work to do on the damping to produce an acceptable ride quality.” A lot of work was done to reduce sprung and unsprung weight and this includes bespoke carbonfibre uprights for each rear hub, and a carbon-fibre rear anti-roll bar.

The huge PCCB ceramic brakes are the same as the GT3 RS, which in turn are shared with the heavier 918 Spyder, so they are more than up to the job of stopping the GT2 RS. That said, these big brakes benefit from extra cooling via ram air ducting that suck in ram air through the NACA ducts on the carbonfibre bonnet. The air is channelled to the front brakes by tubes that run through bespoke openings in the body-in-white unique to the GT2 RS. It is obvious from its racecar looks that aerodynamics play a huge part in the stability of the GT2 RS. “We have a total of 340 kg of downforce at 340 km/h with the rear wing in its normal position of two degrees positive,” explained Andreas Preuninger, Director of GT model line. “The wing is adjustable and helps the car produce a total of up to 450 kg of downforce its ‘race’ position with four degrees angle of attack.” Downforce is always a trade-off against drag, and the GT2 RS has a Cd of 0.35. When I first saw the big numbers of 700hp and 750 Nm of torque, not to mention the cars intimidating appearance, I naturally assumed it was going to be animal from behind the wheel.

127

TORQUE TALK

The reality could not be further from the truth, and as I drove at town speeds from the hotel to the Portimao Circuit, I quickly found that apart from a noticeably stiffer ride than the GT3 or GT3 RS, the GT2 RS actually has a docile side that makes it as tractable as a normal 911 Turbo. The massive torque at modest engine speeds means you can trickle around a gear higher than you think. If anything you don’t want to use too low a gear to avoid lighting up the back end on cold tyres! Underlining the cars trackday credentials, the Clubsport package is standard on the RS. This consists of

128

a half roll cage, fire extinguisher and preparation for a battery cut-out switch and six-point race harnesses in addition to the normal inertia reel street belts.

The Weissach Package version is quickly identified by the Weissach logos on the seat headrests and the dashboard plaque.

My test car also had the optional lightweight Weissach Package that trims a further 30 kg from the cars kerb weight. The roof panel and front and rear antiroll bars and their drop links are made from carbon-fibre, saving 5.3 kg, as is the steering wheel trim and paddle shifters. The magnesium alloy wheels alone save over 11 kg. The titanium bolt-in roll cage saves a further 9.0 kg compared to the normal steel version.

Despite its lightweight credentials, the GT2 RS interior is finished in the finest leather and Alcantara with exquisite detailing. You do notice the relative lack of soundproofing as road noise comes through load and clear, but hey, this is a street legal trackday weapon after all! I ran in PDK Sport most of the time, and tried the stiffer damper setting momentarily.

TORQUE TALK

129

TORQUE TALK

This was not comfortable on the road and I quickly went back to the stock damper setting.

THE MOUNTAIN OF AVAILABLE TORQUE ALSO MEANS YOU CAN DRIVE THROUGH EACH CORNER OF A TRACK ONE GEAR HIGHER THAN YOU WOULD IN A NATURALLY-ASPIRATED CAR.

On track however, the sport damper setting really came into it’s own. Portimao has a smooth and grippy surface but this very fast circuit has significant elevation changes in places as well as a very long straight where I managed to hit an indicated 285 km/h before having to really stand on the 918 Spyder derived anchors. I know Portimao pretty well and so was able to concentrate on what the GT2 RS was telling me as I circulated faster and faster.

130

The GT team have done an amazing job and the car feels totally progressive, predictable and safe in the hands of an experienced driver. Front-end bite is impressive, but the best way to tackle bends is the time honoured slow in, fast out. Get your speed down and trail brake in to settle the nose, and don’t be too greedy with the throttle and the RS is simply astounding in its ability to hold the chose line. Again, the way to make a fast exit is to gently apply throttle as you open the steering past the apex, then the cars pace from a bend is truly amazing.

You always have to remember how much grunt you have at the touch your right foot and the fine balance between exiting a bend as fast as you can go and the back end moving into power oversteer is a fine one. That said, the engineers have managed to give this potent twin-turbo motor such a finely adjustable throttle metering that power feels really natural and easy. When it does let go, the back end is easy to catch, and so long as you don’t give it too much gas you can hold it in a drift with no unexpected snappiness.

The mountain of available torque also means you can drive through each corner of a track one gear higher than you would in a naturally-aspirated car. This way you maintain momentum and do not get into a low gear, high revs situation that will over-drive the chassis. Porsche’s GT2 RS is a stunning achievement for Andreas Preuninger’s team. Not only has it obliterated the record setting lap times of its hypercar sister and its 4WD Italian cousin, it has also set an all time benchmark for traditional rear-wheel-drive sports cars.

POLITICIANS ARE ONLY

human... At one stage of my life I dabbled in politics, even on one occasion ending up as Mayor of my local little town. Local politics can be every bit as important to the electorate as the national variety. In many ways they can be even more important, as they affect people’s lives more closely. This can readily be seen in the sort of letter that local councils receive. We had one from a very irate daughter who complained about the cracked floor tiles in her father’s council house. “I wish to complain that my elderly father hurt his ankle very badly yesterday when he put his foot in the hole in his back passage”. Council housing was a great cause for complaint, although sometimes it had nothing to do with the poor fabric. One woman wrote “I am a single woman living in a downstairs flat and can you please do something about the noise made by the man I have on top of me.” Even in our rural area there were problems. A letter arrived: “I want to complain about the farmer across the road. Every morning at 6:00 a.m. his cock wakes me up, and it’s getting too much for me.” I have to confess that I suggested that she moved house to a road from where we had received a complaint about noisy neighbours which contained the immortal line “…and their teenage son is continually banging his balls against our fence”.

132

Such complaints, of course, rarely reach national level, although the lack of suitable council housing remains a scandalous disgrace in the UK. But even national politicians can sometimes make interesting comments. When Robin Cook was Foreign Secretary he attended a conference with the Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahearn. The Taoiseach had just heard the news that Cherie Blair was expecting a baby. He approached Cook and asked him to pass his congratulations to Tony Blair, saying “It’s wonderful news”. Cook hadn’t heard the news and assumed that Ahern was talking about the Northern Ireland Peace Agreement. “Er, yes, of course, Bertie”, he replied. “Tony has been working round the clock to get to grips with it!”. And on the other side of the political divide, when the Tory Michael Portillo broke the news about

the ocean view bedroom that he had requested. The agent explained that Orlando is in the centre of Florida, and so does not enjoy ocean views. “Don’t lie to me!” exclaimed Sanders, “I looked on the map, and Florida is a very thin state!” This is at a similar level to the congressman’s wife, Landra Reid, who once asked whether or not she could see England from Canada. When told that she couldn’t she replied “Oh! But they look so close on the map!” And even short distances can cause confusion. A Washington DC airport ticket agent once received a request from the aide to a Cabinet member (Janet Napolitano) to rent a car in Dallas. When the agent examined the booking he discovered that the member had only a one hour stopover in Dallas. Querying the need to rent a car he

COOK HADN’T HEARD THE NEWS AND ASSUMED THAT AHERN WAS TALKING ABOUT THE NORTHERN IRELAND PEACE AGREEMENT. “ER, YES, OF COURSE, BERTIE”, HE REPLIED. his gay past, he remarked to a crony “I don’t know how this will go down in the Commons. At least they’re not sitting!” Came the reply “They will be when you get back!” And for the Liberals, when Edward Heath tapped Jeremy Thorpe on the shoulder and asked “What about the Homosexual Bill?”, “Pay it!” said Jeremy. To a certain extent Britain can be grateful for the fact that by and large the politicians who eventually make it to Parliament have a certain degree of intelligence. Some of those who make it to power in Washington have at times displayed a remarkable lack of savvy. This is, of course, particularly true in the field of anything outside the United States. Senator Mary Landrieu (Democrat) once denied that she needed a visa to visit China. When told that she did, she replied “I’ve been to China four times and every time they accepted my American Express!” But their knowledge of America itself is also sometimes somewhat shaky. An aide to Senator John Kerry, having investigated the cost of a trip to Hawaii, asked the travel agent “Would it be cheaper to fly to California, and then take the train to Hawaii?” Many Americans have little idea of distance. Even the great Bernie Sanders from Vermont is guilty. Vacationing in Orlando on one occasion he furiously telephoned the travel agent to demand why he had not received

received the reply “I heard Dallas was a big airport, and we’ll need a car to drive between gates to save time”. Not that you have to get to Washington to appear slightly lacking. A New York state politician (Jerrold Nadler) once contacted his airline to ask whether or not the airline put one’s physical description on luggage in order to identify it? “No, why do you ask?” “Well, when I checked in with the airline, they put a tag on my luggage that said FAT and I’m overweight. I think that’s very rude!” The airline had to explain very carefully that the city code for Fresno, California, is FAT, and bore no relation whatsoever to his physical appearance. One can only hope that he boarded the correct plane. Congressman Bobby Bright (Democrat) from Alaska once telephoned the airport to ask “How do I know which ‘plane to get on?” When, with some surprise, the airport asked what he meant, he replied “I was told my flight number is 823, but none of these ‘planes have numbers on them”. One can only hope that he caught the right aircraft and arrived safely at the right airport. A New Jersey Congressman, John Adler, tried to book a flight from Chicago to Rhino, New York. The clerk asked “Rhino?” “Sure! Everybody knows it!” In a fit of inspiration the clerk replied “Do you mean Buffalo?” “Whatever!” said Adler, “I knew it was a big animal!” And all this was before Donald Trump!

Bettina's Kitchen Happy Food You had a very multicultural past, having lived and worked in Tanzania, Sweden, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria. Which is the one county or culture that you feel has had the biggest influence on your cooking?

I think that I carry a part of each I think that I carry a part of each country that I am from, have lived in or worked in. I tend to get very inspired by my surroundings on a “here and now” basis. It’s impossible to choose just one. I am also very lucky to come from a family of very good home cooks each amazing at their own thing.

134

Where else in the world would you like your culinary journey to take you? I would like to visit Japan and more of Asia and also I have yet to discover parts of South America. I love travelling to anywhere I haven't been!

What made you adopt a vegan diet? I am not vegan. Actually I carry no label at all. Most of what I eat on a personal level is plant-based and gluten-free. The latter because of a severe intolerance. However, professionally and what I specialise in as a chef is “vegan cuisine”

and also 'free-from' cooking that covers the most common allergens.

What misconceptions do people have about following a plantbased diet?

That the food is boring, unsatisfying, expensive and time-consuming. I would argue against all of those points.

If you were to cook for someone who hasn’t eaten a vegan meal before, what would you prepare? When I cook for clients at retreats I call the first meal “A hug”. It’s the “everything is going to be ok” meal. I usually cook

a comforting pasta, because it is an ingredient so many of us recognise and feel safe with. And I always end with a dessert such as a chocolate mousse again something that most people love.

You’ve just published your first cookbook ‘Happy Food’ – how would you describe it and what inspired you to write it?

It’s a collection of recipes that I have cooked professionally over the years at retreats for clients, or taught at workshops. It’s easy, accessible, vegan food that is also comforting. I have taken into account subjects that are relevant today such as the 'waste not' aspect, creating recipes for 1 or 2 person households, and I’ve made sure to use ingredients that are basic and can be found in most supermarkets and countries nowadays.

Given the title of the book, do you think that food can affect our moods?

Yes! I think that food and mood go hand in hand! Cooking/feeding/eating are such emotional actions. We all know whether we feel great, or not so good, after a meal, don't we? Cooking a meal for yourself or a big family feast is

an emotional affair. A lot of care goes into sourcing your produce, deciding what to cook and the act itself. The effort, love and time that goes into cooking a meal is all emotional. I think somewhere along the line we sometimes forget that a meal is a gift to oneself. Every single part of that meal goes into our body to feed our cells and nourish us. As cheesy as it may sound, I also think we feast with our eyes. It’s the first sense that gets hit! So in a way it is important that we make food look attractive, appetising and even give it a hint of excitement! (I am well aware that we don't always have the time to do this ). I don't know about you, but when I am served a beautiful plate of food it genuinely makes me happy!!

What philosophy or values guide your approach to cooking? Simplify: use simple, good quality ingredients. Buy as much local and seasonal produce as possible: it tastes better and you support your local community. Being able to rustle up a meal quickly and without fuss is important, because time is something we have less and less of, so this is important. The south of Spain has amazing markets and incredible produce.

You’re a busy working mum what is your best time saving advice when it comes to cooking? Set aside some time on a weekend and plan your meals ahead. Batch cook and freeze. Don’t stress about cooking recipes more than once and take that 'perfect mum' pressure off that says everything has to be special. The fact that your child eats a home cooked meal is a gift in itself! Trust me I know.

doing. It’s definitely so much more mainstream now and “the in thing to do”. It makes a massive difference! There are exciting times ahead! Marbella is quickly catching on the wellness bug and it’s exciting to see it all unfold.

What are some of the must-have staples that every vegan should have in their kitchen?

Pasta, good flours, jarred pulses for quick fixes, a good selection of spices, good quality grains and nuts. Pantry basics I guess, and of course lots of veggies and fruits.

What are your favourite restaurants in Marbella?

Dezentral has always been a favourite ( I pretty much wrote the book there). I love Gioa for raw/vegan and the owner did the same courses as I did - I am a fan. Last, but not least, I love a Spanish hidden gem - one of those places that you stumble across that makes awesome food. There are a few here. Bettinas Book is out on Amazon now!

What has changed in the vegan culinary scene since you started?

The judgements about it. When I started out, not many of my friends and family knew what I was

On the 6th April, the UK introduced its ‘ground-breaking’ sugar tax. For some it’s a victory in the war against increasing childhood obesity, but for others it is yet more interference by the ‘Nanny State’.

The “fat man of Europe”

OH NO, HONEY, HONEY!

By Eleanor McKenzie

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, Britain is “the fat man of Europe.” And Brexit certainly won’t make it any slimmer. Obesity levels have more than trebled in the last 30 years and it is estimated that by 2050, half the population will be classified as obese. The UK also has ever increasing numbers of people with Type 2 diabetes and Public Health England says “a child in England has a tooth removed in hospital every 10 minutes due to preventable decay."

"Obesity is a consequence of the abundance and convenience of modern life as well as the human body’s propensity to store fat" There is a socio-economic aspect to the issue. “Obesity is closely linked to deprivation levels,” says Dr Alison Tedstone, Director of Diet and Obesity at Public Health England. “The association is especially strong with children. Children in poor communities are far more likely to be obese.” Income, social deprivation and ethnicity have an important impact on the likelihood of becoming obese. For example, women and children in lower socioeconomic groups are more likely to be obese than those who are wealthier. But sugar isn’t the only culprit. The car, TV, computers, desk jobs, high-calorie food, and clever food marketing have all contributed to encourage inactivity and overeating. “Obesity is a consequence of the abundance and convenience of modern life as well as the human body’s propensity to store fat,” says Professor Susan Jebb of Oxford University. And she added: “Research has shown that we have a natural tendency to store fat – it’s a survival mechanism that helped early humans survive famine and food shortages. The situation in which food is readily available for most people has arrived in a blink of an eye in evolutionary terms.” With all this in mind, the new tax on sugar in soft drinks sounds very like the State is punishing the poor for their ‘bad’ behaviour. And, Professor Jebb reminds us, “People don’t choose to be obese, it just happens for a number of reasons. We should stop blaming people for being fat and instead support them in controlling their weight.”

136

Tackling the obesity problem The new sugar tax is being levied on manufacturers and they can choose whether or not they pass the cost on to the consumer. For example, drinks with more than 8g per 100ml will face a tax rate equivalent to 24p per litre. Those containing 5-8g of sugar per 100ml will face a slightly lower rate of 18p per litre. Pure fruit juices will be exempt as they do not carry added sugar, while drinks with a high milk content will also be exempt due to their calcium content. The tax raised by the levy is to be spent on increased support for sports activities and more breakfast clubs in schools. Originally, the Treasury forecast it would raise more than £500m a year, but that has now been reduced to £240m because some manufacturers have reduced the sugar content in their products.

What will replace sugar? The burning question here is what will manufacturers replace the sugar with? The only way to do it and maintain the taste that consumers love and are familiar with is by using artificial sweeteners. For a considerable number of people aspartame and similar products are either obnoxious tasting or a health hazard. As regards nasty side-effects of aspartame, these include headaches, dizziness, mood problems, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea, seizures, memory loss, breathing problems, and various others.

The consumer response Irn Bru, Scotland’s No.1 drink, slashed its sugar content ahead of the introduction of the sugar tax and attracted vocal opposition from some of its Scottish customers when it cut the sugar content by over half, from 10.3g to 4.7g per 100ml. Ribena also followed Irn-Bru by slashing its sugar by half ahead of the new levy. The Ribena recipe change hasn’t gone down well, with many on Twitter saying they plan to boycott the drink and saying the new version tastes like ‘drain cleaner’. Ribena now contains under 5g of sugar per 100ml, with sweeteners Acesulfame K and Sucraclose taking sugar’s place. The drink has also been thickened with polydextrose so its consistency stays the same. Popular sports drink Lucozade cut its sugar content by two thirds, replacing it with additional sweeteners in a bid to maintain its taste. The move reduction in Lucozade’s sugar content hasn’t been well received either, with many questioning how it will affect those who use the drink to manage their Type One diabetes.

Has it worked in other countries? To date, 19 countries have introduced a sugar tax on food and drinks and more seem to be eager to join them, as recommended by the World Health Organisation in 2016 when they backed taxing sugary drinks by 20% or more to help reduce sugar consumption. Mexico is one of the most talked about. In 2014, the Mexican government introduced a tax on sugary drinks to fight the overweight/obesity epidemic affecting over 70% of the population. Two years down the road, an analysis of the sugary-drink purchases found that consumption dropped by 5.5% in the first year and fell by 9.7% in the second year – averaging 7.6% over the twoperiod year. The sugar tax in Mexico has reduced sugary drink consumption significantly and health experts worldwide are closely monitoring its progress, including those working in the areas of obesity, diabetes and oral disease. This is a huge win for advocates of the tax as more than 70% of the added sugar in the Mexican diet comes from sugar-sweetened drinks.

The only way to do it and maintain the taste that consumers love and are familiar with is by using artificial sweeteners.

Clearly there are two clear sides in this debate and since the sugar tax in Britain has only just been introduced it is too early to comment, or even predict, its effects. Finally, just in case you were wondering, the sugar tax does not apply to alcohol. But that is another debate, for another time.

The sugar tax in Mexico has reduced sugary drink consumption significantly and health experts worldwide are closely monitoring its progress 137

THE AMERICAN COLLEGE IN SPAIN offers students of all nationalities the possibility of receiving an American education within a strong international environment. Although it has been operating in Marbella since 2012, The American College in Spain (ACS) originally started offering American education in Seville in 1971. Its founder, Dr. James Butler, has also been responsible for helping to promote and expand U.S. education in different countries by setting up international university programs across the globe. In 1989, he established the American College of Dubai, which has been transferring students to U.S. universities for over 30 years. Due to the growing and diverse population in the Costa del Sol, ACS decided to expand its academic offering by including a fully accredited high school program that could fulfill the needs of the local students. Because of its flexibility, our program is ideal for student athletes who require extra time for competition or training, or students who benefit from a personalized learning environment. Our high school program is offered through the University of Nebraska High School, (UNHS) and is fully accredited by AdvancED and the Nebraska department of Education, and the courses are approved by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) which means that colleges and universities nationwide accept and recognize a UNHS diploma. Our mission at ACS is to provide guidance and fulfill educational needs for students in the Costa del Sol and abroad. Both the high school and university programs are fully accredited in the U.S.

BROWARD COLLEGE UNIVERSITY PROGRAM The American College in Spain (ACS) is an international center of Broward College, which is located in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. As an international center, ACS is authorized to deliver the Broward College Associate degree in Spain. Students who join The American College in Spain will follow the same academic program as Broward College and can earn a Bachelor’s degree by taking the first two years of lower division work in Marbella through Broward College, and the last two years at a state or private university where they can complete their BA, BBA, or BSc degrees. This is known as the University Transfer Program or 2+2. Courses are taught in English by faculty who meet the qualifications as required by the regional accrediting body, and are approved by Broward College. Students who study Marbella are also registered in a Broward College program at an International Center as students of Broward College. This means that student coursework will appear on a Broward College transcript, and students who successfully complete the program requirements will earn an Associate’s degree from Broward College. Broward College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award Certificates, Associate and Bachelor´s Degrees.

COLLECTIVE CALLING’S HOPE FOR EL ÁNGEL IN MARBELLA Local and international charity Collective Calling has a special request for help with a Marbella project. El Ángel is a community of 225 families located in front of Aloha College, Marbella. To drive past this development it would look like any other development here in Spain. There are 125 children residing in this community, many of them eager to interact with you as you enter, at all times of the day you will see children around the development. There is a church, a lake, community centre, medical centre and mini market. As you enter the grounds of the community the scene changes. This community has been neglected and marginalised for many years now. There is a stark, heart-wrenching contrast to the luxury and privileges of the surrounding area. Basic maintenance lacks in most areas, the children are left to play in overgrown gardens and a run down swimming pool has become home to insects and toads. This summer Collective Calling is bringing Hope back to the children of El Ángel. We are fixing the swimming pool and creating an area surrounding the pool that will cater for educational activities for the children. The children of El Ángel are so eager to learn and we can´t wait to start these activities. Collective Calling needs your help to raise 3025€ to do this work. Watch the video at chuffed.org/project/hopefor-el-angel – you can also make a donation via this page.

BONNIE URGENTLY NEEDS A PACEMAKER– PLEASE HELP! In March 2018, Bonnie, a beautiful English Bull Terrier, arrived from Gran Canaria at a local rescue centre for Pitbulls and Bull Terrier breeds. Sadly, it soon became apparent that Bonnie’s heart stops every few seconds for a few seconds and an ECG revealed that she needs a pacemaker. The veterinary specialist for this operation is in Gran Canaria, so she will have to be flown back there for the operation and then brought back to mainland Spain for recovery. She was brought to the mainland because Bull breeds are viewed as dangerous in Gran Canaria and are often just sent to a killing station, which is why Hannah’s Rescue Hounds and the PPP Kennels specialise in bringing these breeds to the mainland. Hannah’s vet and the specialist are flying with her at their own cost, and will stay with her for four days so the pacemaker can

settle and so they can be on hand after both flights. 4000 euros is needed, and this is just for the pacemaker and holster, not for her recovery period. So far, Hannah and her team have raised a total of 2000 euros, but the operation needs to be done as soon as possible. This is a high-risk operation, but as Bonnie is still young and acts like a normal, playful bullie, Hannah feels she deserves this chance of a new life!
