PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Whilst we suffered an unseasonal rainy end to April, May signals the start of Spring and the opening of our many fabulous beach clubs. The iconic La Sala by the Sea has just re-opened for another glorious summer with a stella line-up of events for the season ahead, whilst Max Beach is already in full flow and Ocean Club have confirmed they are back from May too. This month’s cover star is one of Spain’s brightest talents. Rosalía the Barcelona born singersongwriter stands out from the crowd for her flamenco inspired hits and her dedication to the time-honoured Andalusian art form. With an evergrowing International fan base, Rosalía’s long line of collaborators recently included our previous cover star, American singer, Billie Eilish. Rosalía has become one of the most exciting artists of 2021. This month’s Grammies takes a look at the rise of the ‘mumfluencer’ from Stacey Soloman to Mrs. Hinch, these mums are sharing their parenting journey for everyone to see; the good, the bad and the not quite so pretty! So, whether you are a first-time mum needing to know you are not the only one up at 4am or a seasoned pro just wanting to see how your journey relates, these mums are opening up their homes and sharing their journey of motherhood.
As always, our amazing contributors are on hand to inspire with Victoria Wood talking summer staycations and how a bike hike through Andalusia could be just the break you need. Clare and James Davis look at cardio versus weights and just what exercise you should be doing to achieve the best results; a heads up… it all starts with finding something you love! And Interior Designer, Dominique Alexandra Forsström asks the question just what makes Italian design so exclusive? Photo by Zoey Grossman Stylism by Natasha Royt
To conclude, with summer on the horizon we wanted to help local businesses however we could and offer our clients even more exposure, so we have added four additional magazine racks across the coast in prestigious locations such as La Zagaleta, The Golden Mile and Benahavis, making it even easier for our readers to snap up their copy as soon as it hits the stands. orn Rosalía Vila Tobella in El Bail Llobregat, a small town in Sant Esteve Sesrovires in Barcelona, Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalía is known for her modern spin on flamenco music offering a contemporary fusion of flamenco, pop, hip-hop and R&B that attracts millions of millennials worldwide. At the age of 7 her father asked her to sing a song at a family meal, “When I sang everyone had tears in their eyes,” she recalled. “I didn’t understand what happened,” Rosalía continued. “But I knew that I could do something in music.” At the age of nine, her parents gave her a guitar as a gift. By the age of 13 she started studying music and dance and singing at weddings and in restaurants. It was also around that time that she became infatuated with flamenco, after discovering it blasting from car stereos while she was out with friends at a park. She shared that
back then, flamenco was a “street thing, it wasn’t mainstream.” When she was 15 Rosalía appeared on the talent competition ‘Tú Si Que Vales,”. She sang the classic, ‘Como En Un Mar Eterno’ by Hanna but the judges weren’t very impressed. Although her time on the show was brief, her confidence stood out and she showed that she could handle negativity. “I came here to accept criticism and learn from professionals like you, and I accept your opinion,” she said. Her early career start underwent a hiccup when she had to endure a vocal cords operation at the age of 17, she had forced her voice too much and the rehabilitation took two years. After her recovery she attended the Catalonia College of Music Esmuc where she was mainly trained by Andalusian local legend, musician José Miguel ‘El Chiqui’ Vizcaya. “I learned the tradition. I learned all the rules,” shared Rosalía talking of the time-honoured Andalusian art form. “I love flamenco,” she continued. “It’s very difficult music to sing. But I think of any genre as a snow globe — you don’t admire it for its stillness. You have to shake it up and see how it explodes.” She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in flamenco and music production in 2017, the same year her first album ‘Los Ángeles’
“Everything is in flamenco. Spirituality, loyalty, humility, courage”
I’m going to have to keep fighting until I find the same number of women in the studio as there are men.
was released; an acoustic and closer to traditional flamenco sound than her later album. Talking of the importance of the Andalusian music genre Rosalía shared, “My music wouldn’t make sense without flamenco. That’s my base – flamenco is the classical foundation I chose to build my music on. I fell in love with this music genre when I was 13 and since then, I’ve never stopped exploring it. Flamenco inspiration is, above all, the frame I compose my music within.” In an interview in 2018, Rosalía shared that her second album, ‘El Mal Querer’, was actually her thesis project in college. Despite getting to this point without a record deal behind her, in August 2018 Rosalía signed a contract with Sony Music Spain. This was followed by a global record deal in June 2019, the same year she won the VMA for Best Latin Video for her hit ‘Con Altura’ with J Balvin as well as Album of the Year for ‘El Mal Querer’ at the Latin Grammys making Rosalía the first female recipient of the Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year since Shakira in 2006. Head critic for The Guardian, Alexis Petridis, highly commended ‘El Mal Querer’ giving it the highest rating and describing it as “the calling card of a unique new talent”. He praised Rosalía’s vocals for giving the album “a head-turning freshness”, noting that her singing style “is audibly rooted in a different musical tradition to the usual styles in which pop vocalists perform.” In March 2019 Rosalía made a small cameo in the film Pain and Glory alongside Penélope Cruz and headed out on her first world tour stopping at several festivals including Glastonbury and Coachella. “Con Altura” won two MTV Video Music Awards for Best Latin Video and Best Choreography making her the first Spanish act to win one. The song is certified Gold in Italy, 3x Platinum in Mexico, 4x Platinum in Spain and Gold in the United States and has sold over seven million copies worldwide. In 2020 Rosalía join Bad Bunny on the track ‘La Noche de Anoche’ the collaboration performed on Saturday Night Live and debuted at number two on the Spotify global chart with 6.63 million streams in a single day marking the biggest debut for a song fully sung in Spanish in history. It also marked the ninth best debut on the platform in 2020 and the second biggest debut on Spotify Spain in music history. In January of this year Rosalía released ‘Lo Vas a Olvidar’ the highly anticipated collaboration with singer Billie Eilish after two years in the works. By blending genres, breaking rules musically and her growing list of collaborations, Rosalía has become one of the most exciting artists to watch and her international fan base continues to grow.

ast month Prince Philip passed away in his sleep, aged 99. Just a few months short of his 100th birthday, The Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, was the longestserving royal consort in British history standing by the queen for more than six decades of reign. Boris Johnson said he “inspired the lives of countless young people” and the Duke’s family shared that his death was ‘peaceful and gentle’ but The Queen has explained his passing as leaving “a huge void” in her life, Prince Andrew has revealed, saying it had brought home to him the loss suffered by so many during the coronavirus pandemic. The Duke of York went onto share that the Queen had “described his passing as a miracle”, thought to refer to the fact he died peacefully at home with her and not alone in hospital under Covid regulations. The Countess of Wessex, who was attending a Windsor church service alongside Andrew, told a congregation member: “It was right for him [Prince Philip]. It was so gentle. It was just like somebody took him by the hand and off he went. Very, very peaceful, and that’s all you want for somebody, isn’t it? I think it’s so much easier for the person that goes than for people that are left behind.” Princess Anne later issued a statement paying tribute: “My father has been my teacher, my supporter and my critic, but it is his example of a life well lived and service freely given that I most wanted to emulate. His ability to treat every person as an individual in their own right with their own skills comes through all the organisations with which he was involved.” The royal family has thanked the public for the many tributes and messages of condolences.

t’s official. Caitlyn Jenner has put her name into the mix. The former Olympian is planning to run for governor of California. “California has been my home for nearly 50 years. I came here because I knew that anyone, regardless of their background or station in life, could turn their dreams into reality,” Caitlyn shared. “But for the past decade, we have seen the glimmer of the Golden State reduced by one-party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people. Sacramento needs an honest leader with a clear vision.” She revealed she will be challenging California governor Gavin Newsom in the recall election. The 71-year-old is reportedly running with a team of ‘prominent GOP operatives including Tony Fabrizio, the top pollster on Donald Trump’s 2016 and 2020 campaigns, and Steven Chung, a former Trump White House and campaign communications hand who worked on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s successful 2003 recall campaign.’ In a recent press release Jenner announced that California’s taxes are ‘too high’ and critiqued Gov. Gavin Newsom’s ‘over-restrictive lockdown’.

MARY JANE by Jessica Anya Blau
In 1970s Baltimore, fourteen-year-old Mary Jane loves cooking with her mother, singing in her church choir, and enjoying her family’s subscription to the Broadway Show Tunes of the Month record club. Shy, quiet, and bookish, she’s glad when she lands a summer job as a nanny for the daughter of a local doctor. A respectable job, Mary Jane’s mother says. In a respectable house. However what Mary Jane’s mother doesn’t know is the doctor is a psychiatrist who has cleared his summer for one important job—helping a famous rock star dry out. A week after Mary Jane starts, the rock star and his movie star wife move in. Over the course of the summer, Mary Jane introduces her new household to crisply ironed clothes and a family dinner schedule, and has a front-row seat to a liberal world of sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll (not to mention group therapy). Caught between the lifestyle she’s always known and a future she never knew was possible, Mary Jane’s summer shows her new ideas about what she wants out of life, and what kind of person she’s going to be.

I am an interior designer and a citizen of the world
”
“Every project is unique. It has to reflect my client’s lifestyle... culture, background, religion, rituals, professional activities, hobbies, passions, character and day-to-day life.” MIRA KORTBAWI is the perfect example of a talented and open-minded interior designer, who is capable of designing any space, suited to any cultural background. “Listening is the key, getting to understand the lifestyle of the client. I was born in the cosmopolitan city of Beirut, in a multicultural family. In 1998, we moved to Bangkok, Thailand, which gave me a wider view of the world and then in 2006, I moved to Paris where I studied History of Art. I wanted to learn all the factors that contribute to art - culture, politics, religion... I think this is essential for an interior designer. I am a blend of cultures and my designs are the result of my experiences. I am inspired by travelling and living abroad. When I meet a client for the first time, I try to analyse the words they use, but also the words they don’t say, but feel. For example, what kind of kitchen are they envisaging? Open plan or traditional? Shower or bath? Marble or wood? Warm or cold colours? There are standard mathematical principles that we refer to when planning an interior, but I try to take them to a new dimension and make them serve a crucial goal, which is creating a tailored living space exclusively for each client.”

FROM HERE TO PROSPERITY Vivian Milkova, a young actress from Marbella stars in new horror comedy feature film
O
nce again, Marbella is home to new and up-coming talent. You might not believe it just yet, but there are new actors constantly getting their first professional roles, and really good ones too in fact. Not only that, but they all range from different age groups as well. We want people to realise that just because of where they are, doesn’t mean there are no opportunities in acting for them. With today’s current situation, many things have changed including in the acting world, but that doesn’t mean that everything has necessarily changed for the worse. Due to increasing difficulties with actors moving around, casting directors and producers are looking into hiring actors based where they intend to shoot, and a lot of shoots get filmed in Spain! Currently under production is a new horror/comedy feature film, produced and written by Ignacio López, and also casting well known actor, Juan Carlos Vellido, who starred in two ‘Pirates of the Carribean’ movies. The star we are talking about today doesn’t just have any role in this new feature production, she is actually the lead role in the movie, alongside actress Ana Garberí! This new actress is Vivian Milkova. She is 13 years old from Bulgaria and currently attending San Jose College. She was selected from 500 other possible actresses applying for the role. She managed to proceed through all stages until the final with only 4 other girls.
Vivian has been studying at Marbella Film School in Spain with us for a year and a half, and currently attends our teens advanced program. Within that program, students learn how to audition and how to present themselves in castings. We then helped her prepare for the final, her first-ever face to face casting, in Madrid, where she was then finally selected for the main role. ‘The Nanny’s Night’ is about a young girl (Ana Garberí) looking to make some money, she therefore accepts some work as a nanny to look after a child, played by Vivian, until something mysterious and spooky happens at night.
my mum and I would explore the city’s restaurants, museums, shops, parks and more which made us love it even more. l What was your routine while filming?
Vivian on set
We made sure to get word first hand, straight from Vivian herself, to find out what it was like on set, filming, working with the crew and her experience in general... l What was it like for you on set? When I went on set for the first time I was impressed by everyone and everything. How a project like ours includes so many people from the director, producers, actors, camera operators, make-up artists and so many more. As soon as I went in front of the camera I just acted as if it wasn’t there and felt quite relaxed and confident. I play the role of “Nicole Mcgraw” a 14 year old girl who is an only child of a wealthy, over protective couple who have to attend an event and hire a young nanny to look after Nicole. I was very excited to be a part of this and it has left me with the memory of a fascinating experience, which makes me want to succeed even more in this industry. l Explain your relationship with other members of the cast It was really interesting for me to see how everyone had a job that must be followed. I was surrounded by such a hardworking team, but not only that, everyone was always so positive, polite and friendly. The entire
I’d usually wake up around 8am to attend my online school classes and finish at 2:00pm, then go immediately to set. As soon as I arrived I would settle down in the make-up room and start the preparation for the scenes scheduled for that day. Filming with everyone was so much fun and so spectacular, which made the hours pass by incredibly quickly. I’d go home around 10pm usually, FUN FACT: but depending on the Mahesh Jadu, a former day it would differ.

cast made everyone feel comfortable during the shoot. The actors came every day to set very well prepared and it was an honour for me to work alongside such a professional team which included: Juan Carlos Vellido, Diana Peñalver, Almudena Salort, Javier Bodalo, Ailín Pazos, the respected Lone Fleming and Antonio Mayans, David Santana from whom I got an autograph from his shoot in “Star Wars” as soon as I met him, and of course Ana Garberí, my nanny. Not to forget the everyday guidance from the director Ignasio Lopez and the producer Angel Mora who believed in me and fully supported me throughout the process.
l Any other interesting things or thoughts or anything you would like to say about how it was to work on a professional set for the first time?
The idea behind the film is a mixture of horror and comedy as they call it “comedia negra” and in some of the scenes we had to use special effects which added much more fun to my experience. From what I have seen so far, the movie is turning out beautifully and I can’t wait to see “The Nanny’s Night” on the big screen. I’m so happy that I met this amazing, professional and creative group of people and am thankful for being able to say that they were part of my debut. At the end we’re not just a team, but a group of friends.
l Where did you stay when filming and how was it? In order to start the shoot, I needed to travel to Madrid, Spain, with my mum for the month of March. We stayed in an apartment in a very nice area. Whenever I’d get some free time

The Grammies
Over the last year, more than ever we have valued online interaction. Having a new baby can be quite isolating in itself, let alone when the world is struggling with a global pandemic. When parenting books just won’t cut it, those in need are turning to the new generation of parenting and ‘mum-fluencers’. Mums are going virtual to find that sanity-saving support. Whether you are hiding out in the loo for a moment of peace or having a scroll through the ‘gram as your baby naps in the car (we’ve all done it) it’s always nice to know you’re not alone when it comes to motherhood.

On your bike... Stuck for travel ideas? How about a bike hike through Andalucía for your summer staycation?
Victoria Wood is a freelance writer and mother of three based in the south of Spain. Life for her is primarily based around a healthy diet, lifestyle and educating herself and those around her how to live well. Victoria has been a writer for the past twenty years and her work includes an environmental column, journalistic editorials and social media management. She is also a proofreader and editor, and is currently working on her first novel.
S
o many of us are hoping for a change of scenery this summer but have had travel plans thwarted, postponed or simply cancelled. For others, the idea of getting on a plane just doesn’t feel like a safe or comfortable option. Life and routine are out of whack and no one really knows what to do about taking a vacation. So how about getting on your bike? Cycling is a healthy and far more connective way to see a landscape. There is something quite liberating about those two simple wheels being your transport, and you being the driving force and control behind them. Andalucía has some amazingly beautiful landscape to be explored and doing so by bike can really open your perspective and allow you to experience the place first hand. We miss so much when we travel by air, train or car; the different scents, the open air, the true feeling of the ground beneath us, the gradient of the land, and the atmosphere that can be masked by closed confines. We recently took a cycle trip with another family through Portugal. 260km from Setúbal to the Algarve spread out over seven days.
We were getting fitter by the day as well as experiencing a whole new way of travelling and sight-seeing. I recommend taking a train (bikes in tow) somewhere far enough from home that it makes the journey home an adventure. Work out how many kilometres you can manage per day, work out where you want to visit on the way and then locate accommodation in between. It’s quite a challenge but well worth the effort. There are of course tour guides who can offer assistance in such experiences, they’ll provide the route, book the accommodation, even carry your bags in the assistance vehicle so there are ways this can work at any level. However, the planning part is a big chunk of the fun in my opinion. The getting out there and hopefully not getting lost, (GPS and 4/5G being what it is today, that is not really something we need to worry about) stopping wherever and whenever you feel like it to take a photo or sit in a beauty spot or ‘mirador’ and have an energyboosting snack, are all part of the adventure.

If you do decide to do this off your own back I would highly recommend a good quality mountain bike. Rent one with pannier racks or have some attached to your own as you will need to take luggage. But only take the minimum as you really won’t be happy about that extra pair of shoes you didn’t need when you’re climbing a tough incline! We literally had two cycle outfits and two post-cycle outfits - it helps when the weather is warm as you need less and can dry clothes rapidly.

Another option is to choose a specific destination and work out how to get their by bike. You could take your time in doing so but then have a few days or a week at said place, leaving enough time to return by bicycle back home. I think there is something very grounding as well as uplifting about this style of travel, when you arrive at a destination with your air of achievement and the day’s experiences within you there is a definite feeling of inner reflection and satisfaction. There are plenty of cycling apps which can aid you in selecting the best routes

to suit your ability, timing, style of cycling (road bike, mountain bike, on/off road, etc.), you can also select specific landmarks and places of interest and incorporate them on your journey. Booking hotels is by far the simplest and easiest way to manage the accommodation side of things, but if you’re really keen you could take a small tent and sleeping bag and really get into the carrying-your-lifeon-your-back style of travel! We bumped into a guy who had already been travelling by bike for eight months and was planning on continuing for at least five more, all he needed was what he could carry, quite the inspiration!
So, if you can’t get away this year from your homeland, then why not grab the handlebars by the horns and get out there and experience everything your doorstep has to offer from the freedom of your own bike! 37

Weights
Something that seems to confuse people a lot is what type of exercise they should be doing to get the best results. It’s no wonder, there’s a wealth of often contradictory information out there and for the novice, a bewildering array of methods, classes, equipment, approaches and even schools of thought. In short, there’s option overload. Let’s take it back though for a moment to the most important factor: you. Why do you want to start training? Is it to lose some body fat? To build some muscle? To get fit? Because you’re training for an event or sport? Or just to try something new? The reason you want to start exercising will dictate your approach - a marathon runner is going to train in a very different way to a power lifter for example. For the purposes of this article we’re going to assume that, as for the majority of people who take up regular exercise, the aim is to look better, feel better, be healthier and hopefully have some fun along the way.
SO HERE’S THE FIRST PIECE OF ADVICE... FIND SOMETHING YOU ENJOY You’re much more likely to stick to something that you have fun doing, and that you can do regularly. If dance classes are your thing and you hate lifting weights, then do dance classes! There are certain things we should be doing as we age, but the most important thing is that we do something regularly, so do something you love. With that out of the way let’s look at some general principles… One question we get asked a lot is, “are cardio or weights better?” Well, better for what? The actual answer is that we need both, and this is especially important as we age.
40
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
The hormonal and physiological changes going on in our body from around our mid-thirties onwards mean that we are naturally losing muscle mass, flexibility and bone density. Now, muscle is metabolically active, meaning it burns calories even at rest, so as we lose muscle mass our metabolic rate (the amount of calories we burn) drops as well. If our eating and drinking habits stay the same, then we’ll experience that gradual creep of fat around the belly, hips and thighs, as we’re burning less calories (plus a few other hormonal changes going on as well). Of course we can do lots of cardio, which is things like running, cycling, swimming and burn calories, but while that might keep you leaner, it’s not really helping preserve muscle. A common mistake mid-lifers make is adding more and more cardio in an attempt to keep body fat levels low. This ends up overstressing the body and generally becomes less effective at fat burning as our bodies adapt.
SO, HOW SHOULD YOU TRAIN FOR BEST RESULTS? THE ANSWER IS THAT YOU NEED BOTH When we say weights, that’s to make it easy to understand, you definitely don’t need to be in the gym pumping massive amounts of iron. We should really say resistance training, as you can use your bodyweight at home with moves like press ups, squats, lunges, to overload your muscles and force new muscle growth. Preserving our muscle will not only keep our metabolism higher, but of course means we’re also staying strong as we age, and sculpting our body shape. Not only that resistance training helps strengthen our bones too, so it’s a great way of futureproofing ourselves into old age. Ideally you want to hit each muscle group (for example, legs, chest) twice a week. How you do this depends on your lifestyle and how long and how often you want to train. Maybe your whole body twice a week works. Or maybe you prefer shorter sessions with specific muscle groups four times a week. AN IMPORTANT NOTE: Our muscles actually grow when we rest post-exercise. Never work the same muscle two days running, always ensure at least a day (if not two) between each workout for a muscle group. With our resistance training sorted, we can address our cardio. If you’re looking for short and effective, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) gives you bang for your buck. Think short intense bursts of activity (twenty to thirty seconds) with a short rest (10 seconds) repeated in a 15 to 20 minute workout.
If time is tight, or you want something fast, then this is the way to go. You’ll build your fitness levels fast, burn those calories and it’s easy to fit into your day. If you have something you already love, like your step class, boxercise, running, then do that (remember - do what you love) but aim to do a something that gets you out of breath at least twice a week.
5 TOP TIPS what you love - adherence is the 1findsDo most important factor in exercise, so something you enjoy For best results mix up cardio training 2 and resistance training in a way that suits your lifestyle Do include some form of resistance 3 training for your health. You don’t need a gym, you can do it at home with your bodyweight or simple equipment like kettlebells and resistance bands Remember to factor in adequate 4 recovery - don’t work your body hard day after day or you’ll induce a stress response and negate the results you’re looking for
5 Have fun and enjoy it!
Remember, your body is your home. Look after it, and it will look after you. 41

My Healing Diary By Clare Navas
HELP KEEP IN HOMEOSTASIS WITH MY TLE LIFE CHECK ROUTINE! May is here, and I can’t believe we are nearly halfway through 2021 already. The smell of Spring is in the air, the beautiful blue skies and gorgeous weather reminding us all why we chose to live in this spectacular place, Marbella. Blessed with sandy beaches, exquisite mountains and of course the coolest locations, we have been fortunate here to have
had the freedom that many other countries have not.
but here are some of my tips which could help you keep in balance too!
Despite these picturesque surroundings we have all been feeling the negativity in the atmosphere, with businesses closing, changing legislation and uncertainty of travel plans, we are all fighting the fear of another summer without many tourists. Masks are worn everywhere depriving us of seeing each other smile, this is certainly affecting our soul’s, life has definitely changed. I have embraced the world by attending as many of my friend’s events and supporting as many local businesses as I could, to help the normal flow return to our beautiful town.
SO, WHAT IS CBD AND HOW DOES TLE CBD HELP YOU STAY IN HOMEOSTASIS.
But keeping in balance and remaining positive is not always easy and last week I found myself in floods of tears which is unusual for me, but they just wouldn’t stop! My TLE CBD drops, and the yoga couldn’t keep these at bay, I just had to let go! So, I stopped running around and looked inwards. I had to start to look after myself and address my own mental exhaustion, so I did! We are all unique so sometimes what’s worked for me might not work for you
CBD is only one of the 152 compounds of the cannabis plant which also comprises of minerals, flavonoids, omegas and terpenes that are essential for our health. The reason this plant works so well with our bodies is the fact that we have an Endocannabinoid System that helps us keep in homeostasis. Cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 are found in organs and areas all over the body including the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, hormone production and immune health. The cannabinoids in the plant help regulate this system by bringing it into balance. As it does this it helps to eliminate lots of modern-day health issues including problems with inflammation, anxiety, acne, diabetes, insomnia and improves mood! *Check out our website for more cannabis facts www.theleafelite.com TLE BALANCE CONTROL Although I was taking my CBD, doing my usual exercise, drinking my smoothies and generally thinking I was ok when I clearly was not. I decided to focus on me for the time being and let my work take a back seat for a week. So, with my cup of CBD infused coffee in one hand and a notebook in the other, I started to look at what I needed to do to help get back in balance!

Remember when we thought Virtual Reality would revolutionise our world, if not replace it with one more interesting and limitless in its possibilities?
58
Primarily applied in medical, military, automotive and aerospace training between the 70s and 90s, science fiction writers and tech commentators nevertheless predicted VR’s propulsion into the mainstream in service of a species eager to expand its horizons and gamely explore alternate realities in which we could fly, interact with alien life forms, or have better hair. Video games manufacturers such as Sega and Nintendo saw which way the virtual wind was blowing and began developing headsets, and cinema began exploring the darker possibilities of the tech with a raft of early 90s thrillers. Most memorably, 1992’s Lawnmower Man used (then) cutting edge CGI to illustrate the catastrophic effect this new tech could have on the gardening. VR at the movies reached peak zeitgeist with 1999’s groundbreaking Matrix, when we finally realised if absolute submersion in a virtual world meant we’d be susceptible to becoming AA batteries for marauding tentacle-armed robots and black suitwearing, over-enunciating, kung-fu nutters, we probably weren’t up for it after all. In reality, VR never became the game changer the industry always promised, and despite “next-big-thing” levels of investment from tech giants such as Apple, Google and Facebook, it remains a relatively fringe technology in the consumer market, relegated to larger arcades, corporate team-building days and gamers who can only afford the extortionate home headsets because their mum doesn’t charge them rent to live in her basement. Despite recent market gains in some fields and perpetually rosy industry projections, the prohibitive expense, hardware limitations and the fact you look a bumbling tit (some kind of paralytic Daft Punk)
WHEN YOU DROP A FILTER ONTO YOUR INSTA SNAP, THAT’S AR. WHEN YOU VISUALISE YOUR LIVING ROOM IN A DIFFERENT SHADE OF PAINT ON THE DULUX SITE, THAT’S AR...
suggest Joe Public will continue to look elsewhere - namely, at their phone. A technology with none of the massmarket implementation barriers of VR has already stealthed itself into a state of near ubiquity. AR (Augmented Reality) provides an overlay of digital information onto our visual perception of the physical world, creating an interactive experience for the user. Whether or not they even realise they’ve done so, thanks to smartphones, the general public’s already embraced it in a way that would make the Lawnmower man cry into his Flymo. When you drop a filter onto your insta snap, that’s AR. When you visualise your living room in a different shade of paint on the Dulux site, that’s AR. When you accidentally attend a Judicial District Court Zoom hearing as a clearly mortified talking cat, or chase a virtual Pokemon into the path of a notvirtual train, that’s AR. As opposed to virtual reality, which effectively blinds us to our true surroundings, leaving us vulnerable to mocking laughter, stubbed toes and exploitation by malevolent, artificially intelligent overlords, AR arguably enhances our perception of the real world (ok, not in that Pokemon case), with real-time applications which direct us as we travel, inform us as we sightsee or guide us as we learn. Businesses are keenly aware of the benefits. At BMW’s Munich plant, the piloting of smart glasses to display picking info and streamline barcode scanning resulted in a 22% reduction in inventory identification time and a 33% reduction in errors on an average shift. If this increased efficiency results in inevitable redundancies, I vote they get rid of the people who fit the indicators since your average BMW driver has already rendered that role obsolete! Similarly Boeing have used HMD’s (head mounted displays) to aid workers assembling wire harnesses for commercial aircraft, cutting production time by a quarter and lowering error rates to nearly zero. In commercial aviation, dealing as it does with the slinging of hundreds of people across the sky at speeds nearing that of sound itself, “errors’’ are generally not welcome, so chalk up another win for AR and watch the lawnmower man luzz his secateurs through a shed window.
When it comes to saving lives, the industry seeing potentially the most important application of AR is the healthcare sector. Sophisticated, wearable tech can better help patients describe symptoms, as well as guiding nursers and even surgeons in the administration of care. The NHS, a national institution itself exploited by malevolent, artificially intelligent (read: Eton-educated) overlords, has seen the implementation of Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 mixed reality headsets to aid clinicians in collaborating remotely with their colleagues to provide emergency and critical healthcare during the pandemic. Nevertheless, If Brexit and Covid have taught us anything about how the current government award contracts, expect the highly qualified Bill Gates to get his P45 shortly. In his place, the £20 billion contract for provision of cutting edge, augmented reality headsets will go to the bloke who used to hand out the 3-D glasses at Matt Hancock’s local Odeon.... who also just happens to be his nephew. If you don’t know what I’m getting at, you’ve probably already had reality “augmented” for you by a very rich person with a newspaper and a vested interest. Digressions aside, the pandemic has only sharpened our demand for AR, as the in-person, in-store, in-contact experience has taken a serious battering, already on the ropes as it was from years of e-commerce growth, on-demand consumerism and expedited delivery. You can now “try on” Gucci trainers by pointing your phone camera at your feet, experiment with new makeup trends in selfie mode and visualise Ikea furniture real-time in your front room (presented of course perfectly constructed, not in the numerous shards of twisted wood and metal you’ll render it whilst cursing the assembly instructions) With such rich potential and tech consensus on its upward trajectory, AR’s all set to explode in a hundred different directions and generate billions of dollars (some $90 billion by 2023 according to Digi-Capital research). This next big thing is already here. The lawnmower man just drunk a litre of weed killer and Thelma and Louise’d his ride-on off a cliff.

The amount raised exceeded all expectations with Marbella locals rallying round to donate a fabulous 8.800€ for this great cause. Owner of Pimlico Plumbers Charlie Mullins personally donated 4.000€ to purchase additional accommodation for the animals. GREAT SCORES IN PERFECT CONDITIONS The second Sala Golf event of the year took place last month at Los Flamingos Golf, Villa Padierna. Prior to play, golfers had the opportunity to enjoy their La Sala breakfast and take advantage of the copious amounts of beverages on offer. After their round, the full field of participants made their way back to La Sala for the prizegiving. Ryan McDonald managed to knock one close on the 4th hole, winning nearest to the pin, the next nearest to the pin was in 2 shots on the Par 4, 7th hole where Joe Statham was victorious. On the longest Par 5 of the course, the 11th hole, Joe Crowley smashed one down the middle and won the longest drive prize. There were some high scores in near perfect conditions, however there can only be one individual winner on the day, and after having his handicap cut from the last event, Aaron Kavanagh managed to come in with 41 points, winning two Sala Golf events in a row along with lots of new friends in the bar! Finally, the team winner of the day, with a team score of 90 points, Gecko and The Bogeymen took home the main prize plus most importantly the event helped raise important funds for The Elena Foundation. Next up is Atalaya Old which promises to be another great day. For details, please contact Harry on harry@salagroupholdings.com

AT LONG LAST AN OPEN HOUSE COCKTAIL LAUNCH… What a joy to see all our colleagues again at the exciting launch of our Provence style villa in Puerto Almendro that resulted in a very successful auction with over 453 registered potential buyers from all corners of the world of which 41 were previous bidders. Due to Covid restrictions it was a very long day as guests had to visit in groups of 10 to be served a selection of delicacies complimented by bubbling mimosas. A lovely happy day and we can’t wait for the next auction launch of La Residencia in La Cerquilla in preparation for the 9th of May starting date.
MY FIRST MEAL AT LA LEÑA… I must say it feels so refreshing trying new restaurants and I seem to appreciate going out more than in the past, where one just took everything for granted. On a rainy day I enjoyed a late lunch with friends at La Leña feeling completely transported to London or New York, not just because of the weather - but the trendy interior combined with the utmost professional service and an innovative simplistic menu made the lunch. Well worth a visit Dani Garcia’s latest feasting place in the heart of the Puente Romano Square.
THE GRAND NATIONAL EVENT… I was invited to a sunny, relaxed yet extremely exciting Grand National Lunch hosted in Aloha Pueblo. Whilst dining on some traditional English dishes we watched the races at Aintree culminating in the famous 4-mile race ultimately won by the amazing Rachel Blackmore riding outsider Minella Times - the first woman ever to win the race in true “Girl Power Style”. Another one for the books – my Boxy won the sweepstake!

TAKING THE STRESS OUT OF SECURING A SPANISH MORTGAGE For some, the decision to purchase a Vista Lago villa will be one of the most important of their lives. Such an unusual level of quality in design, construction and location does not come cheap, but even for those for whom cost may not be of primary consideration, a mortgage is a handy way to maintain liquidity. For most of us, a mortgage is a must. Article by Vivion O’Kelly
Whatever the state of one’s finances, getting a mortgage can be complicated, time-consuming and not good for your spiritual well-being, especially in a foreign country. For this reason, BRIGHT, the developers of Vista Lago Residences, are now collaborating with Fluent Finance Abroad, a leading independent Spanish Mortgage Broker with a team of Spanish and UK fully qualified mortgage consultants, to help their clients understand the complexities of gaining a Spanish mortgage. Their aim is to provide a highly personalised service, and ensure that every purchaser receives the most appropriate mortgage advice based on their particular set of circumstances and requirements. They will then guide each client through the entire process, as smoothly and easily as possible – from start to finish. As a whole of market mortgage brokers, Fluent Finance Abroad are able to access mortgage deals from every active Spanish lender, as well as being able to offer exclusive deals from a number of Spanish banks. Their comprehensive range of services include Spanish mortgages for nonresidents and Spanish residents, mortgage re-financing, equity release mortgages and construction mortgage as well as alternative residential lending. All of these are self-explanatory except, perhaps, the last one, which basically means overcoming the numerous obstacles that have been put in place by lenders over recent years as a result of the Great Recession and its aftermath.
82
Keep it Real
Their company website www.fluentfinanceabroad.com offers an easy-to-use mortgage calculator by which monthly payments rates can be estimated. The average term in Spain is 20 years, although this can rise to 25 or 30 years in some cases. Interest rates vary, but they recommend a standard exclusive rate
mortgage deal of 2.20 percent to do initial mortgage calculations. It must be remembered that in Spain, there will be additional financial considerations such as notary fees, stamp duty and legal and administrative costs. All banks offer different terms, although the borrowing amount for non-residents is normally capped at 60 percent, the
maximum being 10 percent higher. For residents of the country, however, mortgages can go up to 80 percent of purchase price. Early redemption is not as punitive as in some countries, and most Spanish banks consider your pension income when calculating loan amounts, allowing for loans that will run to a 75th birthday, or in some rare instances, five years longer.

We spoke to the founder and owner of Fluent Finance Abroad, Marc Elliot de Lama, and asked some of the questions we thought most potential clients might ask about his company and what it offers.
Why do I need a broker? Why not just go to the banks myself?
Can anything go wrong along the way?
One of the main benefits of using us as a mortgage broker is our sixteen years of experience in the field, so we have doors open to us from many different sources. You go in alone, you get what they offer; we go in with you and the situation changes to your advantage.
No, as long as the client is honest with us from the outset. It has never happened. And in any case, we carry full third-party liability insurance.
To whom do you owe duty of care? To the client alone, one hundred percent, which is why we charge a broker fee. And what is the fee? It can vary, according to the mortgage in question. There’s no such thing as a standard fee, since all mortgage applications are different, but our maximum is one percent. How does the process work? First we have to ensure that you can actually get a mortgage. We get as many offers as we can and then filter them down to the best for your circumstances. We project manage the entire process, so the clients don’t have to worry about anything.
Is there a regulatory body that oversees the Spanish mortgage business? We’re regulated by and registered with the Bank of Spain, and you’ll find our registration number D305 on their website. I’m a UK qualified mortgage consultant and financial advisor, and I’ve also got the same official Spanish qualifications, as have all seven of us working in this office. How long does the mortgage process normally take? Usually around four to ten working days with quick pre-approvals, which is very important during lockdown, when people cannot travel easily. That means they know what their budget is before they actually come here, and that helps speed up the process.
You offer advice free of charge. Can you elaborate? We do all the work necessary to ensure you get your mortgage, but If the application is rejected, there’s no consultancy fee. When accepted, an agreement is signed that gives us the authority to work on the client’s behalf throughout the process, before any approach to the lender is made officially.

The Master of Improving your
Sleep Experience Written by Kelly Harkins Photos by Julia Roder
Founded in 1995, as the UK version of the ‘Re di Cotone’, an Italian cotton supplier which originated in Northern Italy all the way back in 1880. Over time, King of Cotton has earned its reputation as the go-to supplier of hotelquality linen, including cotton bed linen and Egyptian cotton towels, to hotels and private customers alike. SOCIETY had the opportunity of visiting their store in San Pedro and learned more about their latest products and how they are currently dealing with global events. With shops in London, Paris, Brussels, Nice and Marbella, they are now proud to announce the inauguration of their new European Distribution center in Guimaraes, Portugal. This new distribution center allows all of their European orders to be processed smoothly and in a timely manner throughout the continent. When you step into the store, you are transported to a sanctuary of serenity where the bedroom is the main focus, surrounded by everything you need
to make your sleep experience as heavenly as possible. At your disposal, there are all of the components needed to dress the entire bed for a sensational night’s rest, including mattress protectors, bed linens, duvets, blankets, throwovers, and pillows. The products are recognizably made with Egyptian cotton, which is known to be the finest cotton in the world as it offers a luxurious, soft and dense feeling against the skin. The MILANO bed linens are one of the newest products King of Cotton has to offer, made from Egyptian cotton and with a 800 thread count. The thread count is the number of threads in each square inch, and as the thread count increases, the material will feel softer and plusher. The MILANO bed linens come in 5 classic colours, and can be purchased from €23,40. Now that summer is approaching, there are the Natural White Goose Down Duvets which allow you to sleep in pure indulgence, combining the softness of cotton with the comfort of the lightest filling in the market; down, retrieved from the breast of the bird. This filling provides a unique ability to trap air, and offers the ideal temperature for your bed throughout the warmer nights, available from €95,00.
86
When you step into the store, you are transported to a sanctuary of serenity where the bedroom is the main focus, surrounded by everything you need to make your sleep experience as heavenly as possible. Towel density is measured by Grams per Square Metre (GSM), which can generally vary from 300 to 800 GSM. To add luxury and style to your bathroom, there are the MILANO 700 GSM Egyptian Giza Cotton Towels, their first towel to be manufactured in Portugal from 100% Egyptian Giza Cotton. This towel is ultra-soft, absorbent and designed to be supplied to some of the top hotel chains, with the smallest size starting at an affordable €3. Bathrobes and pillowcases can be customised for clients with their initials and names, offering a selection of fonts, different colours of fabrics and letters, and bathrobe sizes for the entire family. Apart from premium quality cotton products, they also offer accessories that help create a dreamy atmosphere for bedtime such as the Deep Sleep Pillow Spray with natural Lavender to instantly alleviate stress and deliver a soothing feeling. The Eco Hand-Poured Soy Wax Candles are available in three relaxing scents to further help provide a fully relaxing sleep.
King of Cotton believes that quality and price are not mutually exclusive, and take pride in its fast order processing, delivery times and most importantly, for its superior quality cotton linen products. For over 25 years, they remain as a top supplier of the highest quality cotton products for hotels and private customers around the world, and now with their new distribution center in Portugal, they can look forward to continuing to grow and adapt.

What Makes Italian Design So Exclusive? Text by Dominique Alexandra Forsström
Florence is a living influence of some of the most influential architects and designers such as Brunelleschi, Da Vinci, Dante, and Michelangelo.

Interior Designer, Fashion Editor & Model, Dominique Alexandra Forsström, is founder of Alexandra Studio, a platform created to share a passion for interior design and all things beautiful. This month, Dominique gives us an insight into the essence behind Italian Design, what makes it so special and unique, and how it has influenced today’s concept of luxury. A strong passion for Italian design is present in her projects at Femont Galvan Designers, where fine quality materials, beautiful craftmanship and sublime creativity are at the core of the company’s ethos. Dominique’s interior design style follows only one rule: to be absolutely sophisticated and elegant. You can read more about her trends, tips and inspiration at: www.alexandra-studio.com | info@alexandra-studio.com @domforsstrom @alexandrastudi0 (last letter is a number zero)
Everyone knows that Italy is the home of some of the most exquisite luxury brands in the world. From fashion and textiles to automotive brands such as Armani, Ferragamo, Gucci, Fendi, Loro Piana and Ferrari to name just a few, Italian design is globally renowned for the highest levels of quality and aesthetics. But what exactly makes Italian design so unique? A few years ago, while fascinatedly studying in the heart of Florence the essence of Design ‘Made in Italy’ in the Istituto Europeo di Design, I thoroughly enjoyed discovering – both inside and outside the classroom - that what makes Italy so special is an attitude and a lifestyle combined. It goes without saying that the Italians are known for their impeccable style, however it goes far deeper than their exquisitely tailored wardrobe.
THE BEAUTY OF BALANCE No matter how much print, loud colour or bold silhouettes are incorporated, there is always an undercurrent of harmony in Italian style. Somehow it just works. This comes from thoughtfully chosen pieces such as timeless accessories that pull everything together seamlessly. Ultimately, there is a balancing act between drama and sophistication that comes so naturally. And that’s where the beauty of balance plays in – if there is drama somewhere, it is balanced out with elegance.
LUXURY IN EACH DETAIL Even the smallest details are not left to chance. I like to think that a great part of the confidence that Italian women exude comes from their expertly chosen lingerie. Even if nobody but them is going to see it, Italian women still choose beautiful undergarments – not only for the confidence boost, but because wellfitting and appropriate underwear allows garments to fall more gracefully off the body. In other words, a great foundation must not be overlooked to create a beautiful and seamless final result.
HIGH STANDARDS Italians know the value behind a timeless high-quality piece, and they use them often. They understand the importance of luxurious fabrics like linen, merino and cashmere, and taking good care of these basics in order to last over time. For many centuries, Italian manufacturers have been known to use only the best of the best in materials like wood, marble, aluminium and glass, as well as textiles like silk, wool and cotton. Ultimately, this Italian tradition of understanding beauty, art and the good life can be transported into the fields of fashion, home living, and lifestyle and, just like most other art forms coming from Italy, they will never go out of style. It is truly an investment that will last a lifetime.
DIOR CRUISE
The international market is aware of the level of Italian expertise and craftmanship. In the 2021 Dior Cruise Collection, butterfly embelishments were made using the Tombolo-style embroidery. What sets this lace apart is how delicate and rare it is. The creation of the flowers and butterflies alone required 15 hours of work. Tombolo lace, which dates back to the 15th century, is created using a special, extremely meticulous technique, and is an important part of Puglia’s heritage.

THE ESSENCE OF
MADE IN ITALY ‘Made in Italy’ is synonymous with exclusivity. The industries that continue to produce in Italy know this well and focus on the quality of ‘Made in Italy’ products. It’s the know-how and expert craftsmanship that position them in the global market. Therefore, producing in Italy is a strategic choice. Nowhere is the Italian penchant for attractive design and style more evident than in the area of home decoration and furnishings. In recent decades Italian designers have extended their sights from clothing and accessories to all areas where style and good taste make a difference, and furniture is certainly one of them. Many currently existing furniture manufacturing companies began operating on a small or family basis in the early 1900s, so there is a long tradition of furniture making in Italy.
Gio Ponti Collection
Therefore, it comes as no surprise that manufacturing and export of fashion and furniture items is an integral part of the country’s economy. The Italian fashion, textile and accessories sector is one of the most important in the word for revenue generated, number of people employed, and the number of companies involved. Among the competitive factors determining the success of Italian furniture is the fact that the Italian furnishings industry is at the forefront in terms of quality workmanship, a winning manufacturing model (the industrial furniture districts), constant technological innovation and a strong creative attitude to the marketplace. In regard to the strong area
Producing in Italy is a strategic choice. specialisation, from district to district, the knowledge and expertise can be different, but the importance and the need to protect and support ‘Made In Italy’ products remains the same. Today, the main furniture producing areas of Italy are the Brianza (a zone in the Province of Milan), the Veneto and the Marche. In other words, the Italian furniture industry’s success is a reflection of vast investments in research, product development, innovation and new technology, together with passion and creative flare, resulting in Italian design having a clear role as a global trendsetter.
ITALIAN DESIGN ICONS The contribution of contemporary Italian furniture designers has left an indelible mark and has established the country as a major exporter of modern-day classics. Modern Italy has produced some of the greatest furniture designers in the world, such as Gio Ponti, Ettore Sottsass, Vico Magistretti, Joe Colombo or the Castiglioni brothers to name just a few, being Gio Ponti one of the most important designers of the mid-20th century. To this day, Italian furniture design companies have been able to maintain their status and their experimental verve and, as a result, Italy is attracting the best talents from all over the world. One of today’s most iconic designers, Roberto Lazzeroni, studied art and architecture in Florence, and began working on his first interior design projects in the 1980s. With an approach characterised by a receptive attitude towards the history of design, Lazzeroni describes his design ethos as ‘sentimental’ and striking a balance between past and future. He has collaborated with Baxter, Ceccotti Collezzioni, Giorgetti, Flexform and Poltrona Frau.

KING’S HILL A Palace for Living in If architecture and interior design is to be truly defined as an art form, this is it. Meet Jason Harris, CEO and Creative Director of UDesign, and the stunning new palace he has just designed in Saudi Arabia.

“Our goal was to create a large-scale private residence that would have elements of a luxury hotel, an art gallery and a family home. A place that was functional and comfortable at the same time, ideal for family living and for entertaining,” says Jason. “There was no brief, except to design a palace. They came to us because they wanted something unique, something not too modern and not too traditionally Arabic. They wanted modern with key elements of their culture incorporated into the overall design,” he adds. Saudi Arabia is a hot, flat country, with not many green hills or trees. Everything outside a house in the countryside is generally desert. For that reason, Jason and his team had to create an entire

world of its own in and around the core structure, with an imposing entrance distant enough from the house to allow for an uninterrupted view of the entire palace façade on entering. “We created something clean and classical, symmetrical and easily maintained,” say Jason, “with a lovely floor in gold and black mosaic and straight palm trees offering shade in the seating areas. It’s all illuminated at night in different colours, adding to the sense of a magical world on its own. The buildings you see on both sides are car garages, and there’s water everywhere, in the numerous fountains and water elements throughout the site area and into the house itself. This is an anticipation of what’s to come, because the same design motifs are continued inside.”

If you thought you’ve seen all this before, don’t worry: you have. Or at least, something like it, because it is based on the traditional Spanish cortijo, that wonderful architectural tradition dating from Moorish times, where all social life centred on the courtyard, and where water formed an essential part of the whole. And if you’ve been to the Alhambra Palace in Granada, this might also give you a déjà-vu moment. In line with the absolute symmetry of the structure, the main entrance is situated in the centre, and it is quite impressive. The view here is of a huge black marble sculpture floating on water, flanked on both sides by tall mosaiced columns and a glimpse of the cortijo-like water pond behind. The eye is drawn inwards by the pattern of the black and white Rug Society floor rug and the deep purple Tom Dixon wingback armchairs sitting under the lush greenery of the indoor palms. On each side of the room are large-scale green artworks, while above the stone sculpture hangs a light installation inspired by shoals of swimming fish. There are, of course, more than enough seating areas in these shared spaces throughout the house. “Water is very important in a building and a location like this,” says Jason. “It’s a natural element that calms the soul
99
Home Coture
“WATER IS VERY IMPORTANT IN A BUILDING AND A LOCATION LIKE THIS...IT CALMS THE SOUL AND RAISES THE SPIRIT. IT’S EVERYWHERE HERE, AND IT REFLECTS THE GOLD IN THE CEILINGS...” and raises the spirit. It’s everywhere here, and it reflects the gold in the ceilings. The three main seating areas in the entrance are designed to see the room from different angles, but the water reflects what’s beyond it, like floor mirrors strategically placed along the way of all views.” The palace’s furniture has been chosen, not only in full consideration of each piece’s intrinsic beauty and functional value, but also in how it contributes to the whole. “At this level of design, it’s not all about brand name, although we have that too. The Marcel Wonders oversized lamps, the Tom Dixon chairs and so on. But that’s because they really do fit into the kind of design feeling we wanted for this palace. We were looking for shapes and colours that fit into a space, but not overwhelm it. Nothing takes centre stage here. It all combines to make a satisfying whole. “For that reason, we have not packed the formal lounge with too much furniture, as might be necessary in a hotel, but with just enough for a large family and guests. We have just a few different seating areas around a focal point, which is the granite sculpture already mentioned, seen from almost every perspective on the ground floor. And there is water wherever you look, naturally. “It’s all about light and greenery and natural raw materials everywhere,” say Jason, “and I like to think we have achieved this here. Huge tall spaces that still have a family-home feel to them, impressive mosaic columns, a large green stone and resin wall installation, different bodies of water and creative lighting, so that all spaces are as beautiful by night as by day. We also designed with a forever mindset. You might change the furniture in years to come, but nothing here will ever go out of fashion”.
100
The view from the rear of the house is as impressive, if not more so, than that from the front. Perhaps the large helicopter marking on the lawn sets the right tone of opulence. The partly sheltered swimming pool is bigger than normal, because this is Saudi Arabia.
“The small building one sees from the pool patio is, in fact, toilets. A cinema screen drops down from here when needed, so films and videos can be watched while lounging in the pool or on the patio,” Jason tells us. “It’s not often you see such elegant outdoor toilets beautifully illuminated at night.”
... IF YOU’VE BEEN TO THE ALHAMBRA PALACE IN GRANADA, THIS MIGHT ALSO GIVE YOU A DÉJÀ-VU MOMENT. “It’s funny,” he laughs. “The Alhambra Palace style was brought to Andalucía in the first place from the Arab world. And now, to some extent, it has gone back there, in a kind of Mediterranean re-mix of architectural style. What comes around goes around.”

Look Up By Ian Greenland
Sometimes it’s easy to forget how incredibly clever human beings actually are. We celebrate consumer culture in all its superficiality and take for granted the people and things which really matter and we allow the cult of celebrity and the barely concealed agendas of elites to foist people into power who are not only unqualified, but in some cases deserve to be behind bars. We’re bombarded with coded messaging encouraging us to blame each other for society’s ills because that stops us pointing the finger where it should really go and generally we go along with it because it seems inconvenient not to, plus there’s an app on the new iPhone 27 which gives you rabbit ears in selfie mode. Sometimes we walk into things because we’re not looking where we’re going (too busy chasing pokemon or admiring those rabbit ears...) Nevertheless, behind almost every dunderheaded, misguided or selfish action is some truly incredible example of human ingenuity allowing it to happen. We wouldn’t be pumping our faces full of collagen and implanting pecs in hitherto pec-less areas if the digital camera and internet hadn’t brought Kim Kardashian and Chris Hemsworth into our lives to make us feel inadequate. We wouldn’t be voting sexpests and charlatans into governance without the hardfought foundations and complex implementation of institutionalised democracy. We wouldn’t be blaming the tax-paying, economy-boosting Pakistani family down the road (or back home...), or the desperate, starving, refugees fleeing war-torn countries we meddled with for the lack of beds/staff/ PPE in the chronically underfunded, soon-to-be-privatised NHS if we hadn’t been told to near-daily by one of several billionaire, party-donor, vested-

interest tax exile media tycoons via the modern printing press.... Oh yeah, and we wouldn’t have fucking bunny ears without mobile phones. We also wouldn’t know the universe is 13.8 billion years old (triple the age of Earth, give or take...) without the launch of the Hubble Telescope in 1990, a scientifically mind-boggling endeavour 20 years in the planning. We wouldn’t know the rate at which said universe is expanding, that most of its major galaxies are anchored by gigantic black holes. We wouldn’t know Pluto has the moons Nix and Hydra and we wouldn’t have a 3-D map of dark matter (sure it has its uses!) We wouldn’t have this incredible, awe-inspiring comprehension of the immensity and wonder of the universe to completely ignore as we scrap over small patches of land, resources and our perceived, yet cosmically irrelevant differences. Perhaps we just need to be shown a little further? This year we’ll be given
the chance once again as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST or Webb) is launched. The Webb is to the Hubble what that latest iPhone is to the Nokia 8310 - no shade, that was a badass little phone but it didn’t do the rabbit ears thing and the Hubble can’t look back 13.6 billion years in time like Webb. That’s just (“just”) a quarter of a billion years after that rather large bang kicked things off and will permit us for the first time to see the formations of stars and galaxies. Its infrared technology will also allow it to look into the previously impenetrable gigantic dust clouds where new stars and planetary systems are today being formed and observe previously invisible smaller planets for signs of water and hospitable conditions for life. With a 6.5 metre mirror, it has seven times the light-gathering capacity of Hubble, and unlike that technical marvel, which orbits Earth at about 300 miles altitude, Webb will park itself approximately one million miles away at a spot the clever folk call L2 or the second Lagrange Point (of which there are five). At this position (roughly four times the distance to our moon), the gravity of the Earth and the Sun balance the orbital motion of a satellite, allowing it to remain in a fixed position relative to the Earth with minimal energy needed for course correction. A bit like when you precisely balance your car’s clutch on a steep hill.... only whilst hurtling at 67,000 miles an hour through space.... in a solar system which is itself whirling around the centre of our galaxy (the Milky Way) at some 490,000 miles per hour... that galaxy being just one of the estimated two TRILLION out there (an estimate based on rigorous scientific research and precise measurements attained with the Hubble, not just some bloke looking up at night and taking

(approximately... well, REALLY BLOODY FAR!!!!)
a stab at a big number). The universe, though constantly expanding is currently estimated to be more than 90 billion light years in diameter, a light year being the distance light travels in a year
When the figures involved get that overwhelming, you can see why people instead choose to restrict their field of focus to arm’s length, or occasionally arm plus selfie stick. In fairness, we’ve had enough earthbound problems this last year to keep us occupied – Webb’s
2021 launch itself has been delayed due to the impact of Covid, with NASA announcing it’s now due to blast off on an Ariane 5 ECA rocket from Kourou, French Guiana on October 31st. Provided some normality has returned to Earth by then, we’ll be staring up to the heavens while little ghouls and goblins visit our homes in the quest for sweets, a simple celebration rendered unthinkable for much of the last year. For many of us, already shaken by climate change, Covid’s brought a sobering reminder of the precariousness of our position on Earth but perhaps Webb can give us a greater clarity about our place in the universe itself.

Basic Cupboard Staples Worth Splurging On Bettina, our resident foodie, offers her insider knowledge on plant based cuisine and takes us on a culinary journey as she travels the world in search of gastronomic inspiration.
N
ow you know me, I’m all about finding a bargain where possible and cutting costs in order for things to be more financially friendly for your wallet, but sometimes there are products that you really do need to splurge on. If you are taking precautions and cutting costs, without compromising the quality (read more on how to do so, here) you are able to use those saved pennies on the products you really love and need the higher quality of. It’s all about finding the balance. Here are my top five products that I will always spend a little more money on, where possible, and is a great starting place for anyone who wants to add a little more luxury to their store cupboard but in a sensible way – no crazy named or hard to find products here.
It’s all about the basics… done well.
Olive Oil Olive oil is such a great allrounder-product and is usually the base or finish of many meals. Which is why you need to have a high-quality olive oil in order to elevate your dish. Olive oil is so much more than just a cooking oil. It helps add flavour, change the texture and also enhance products to heighten them to the best of their ability. From marinating vegetables to crisp and char as they sweeten in the oven to massaging kale leaves for a simple salad. A high-quality olive oil will be your best friend in the kitchen, so this is one that I never skimp on.

Vegetables
Spices
Although this is one that is far from black and white, I always never skimp on purchasing my vegetables. I buy organic, local and seasonal where possible. This may look on the surface to be a higher cost, but when you go further into it, and adopt the right practices the costs can actually be a lot cheaper than you think. The reason why I always splurge on my veggies is because they 100% taste better, they are sweeter, and fresher, they have a better texture and are bursting with nutrients. You literally pay for what you get here. And can save on additional sauces and ingredients needed, because the veggies basically cook themselves, rich in flavour already with no added extras needed -perhaps just a glug of high-quality olive-oil and some good Sea Salt, though.
As with the majority on this list, it’s all about finding and spending just a little more on the higher-quality products that are the building blocks to a great dish – so, not skimping on costs when it comes to spices is a game-changer. It makes a huge difference, and you probably end up spending less overall due to the nature of the product. A weak, store-bought spice may not give you the flavour or colour change you require so you will end up using more. Purchasing a high-quality spice that’s packed full of flavour, and if stored and treated correctly can last a long time, where you are only adding a small amount compared to the weaker varieties.
Salt The world of salt is far from simple. A lot of your ‘table salts’ are cut or mixed with other ingredients. So, I always opt for a good, proper salt. Sea salt or Himalayan are my go-to. As with the oil, salt is a huge factor in a dishes’ final outcome. You need to have the proper building blocks in order to get the most from your ingredients. Using the wrong or cheaper salt can, as silly as it sounds, add a ‘salty’ flavour. Salt is not supposed to make your dishes salty – it’s supposed to bring out the ingredients natural flavours and enhance them. So, you need a high-quality product that’s actually worth it’s money in salt…
Wine Now I know this won’t be to everyone’s taste, but yes – it’s definitely worth buying a good quality wine. I’m not saying buy the top of the list, highest priced bottle, but opting for a middle ground. I have been into biodynamic and organic wines for a while now, and even natural wines and you are paying for the ethical practices which may not always result in a higher quality tipple. This one is all about trial and error (it’s a hard job, but someone has to do it!) and finding a wine that you love, that fits your budget, is one of the best things you can do.

Mao Restaurant by Max Beach introduces an elevated dining experience that will satisfy and awaken your senses, serving a taste of the Orient with a view of the Mediterranean. SOCIETY had the privilege of sampling the menu at Mao Restaurant, the newest hotspot for Asian cuisine which finally made its long-awaited debut and opened its doors last month. Offering an exquisite atmosphere with a large terrace and incredible views overlooking the Mediterranean, Mao’s interior design is subtly inspired by ancient Oriental buildings, and the use of white umbrellas on the ceilings enforce a distinctive Asian ambiance. The staff were accommodating and attentive and made us feel welcome from the moment we entered the venue, talking us through the menu and helping us choose from all of the delectable options available. The service was impeccable, and they frequently returned to our table to ensure we were never without a drink.

AN AUTHENTIC CHINESE EXPERIENCE
To begin, we ordered the classic Chinese beer, Tsingtao, then went straight for the cocktails. I ordered an Opium #198 comprising of gin, poppy liqueur, sweet vermouth, lemon juice, and hibiscus bitters and egg white to garnish. The cocktail itself was quite refreshing and reminiscent of a fruity summer drink with a citrusy twist. We also ordered a bright, fuchsia-coloured Rhubarb Margarita (gold tequila, rhubarb, grenadine and lemon juice), which reminded me of a mature version of a Shirley Temple. The sweetness of the drink was offset by the

flavours of the tequila and the fiery chilli salt covering the rim. The menu at Mao includes highlight dishes such as their fluffy Signature Bao buns, crispy Vietnamese-style spring rolls, Peking Duck, and spicy Singapore Chilli Lobster. Using only fresh and handmade ingredients, except for their rice noodles, guests can enjoy a truly fantastic Chinese culinary experience complemented by a vibrant atmosphere and picturesque beachfront views. For our starters, we chose Chao Pao, San Choy Bow and Mixed Mao House Dim Sum. The Chao Pao were light and fragrant delicate steamed buns filled with braised short rib and black truffle,
and the San Choy Bow were fresh lettuce leaves stuffed with minced meat, a great option for those who prefer to opt for something light yet still bursting with flavour. The House Dim Sum is one of the most popular items on the menu, as it offers the chef’s selection of starters such as the succulent and hearty gyozas and dumplings with an array of fillings. The Mao experience wouldn’t be complete without tasting the Royal Mao Chinese BBQ, a combination of half of the portions of the classic main meat dishes the restaurant has to offer: half Crispy Duck, half Special Cantonese chicken, and Char Siu Pork. Contrary to other Chinese restaurants, the Peking duck is roasted in the traditional Chinese

社会杂 manner, which gives a browned exterior, a slightly crisp coating and a more authentic flavour. Altogether, the duck, chicken and pork were tender, juicy and incredibly filling for just three people. We also ordered the Wok-Fired Angry Bird (corn-fed chicken, chilli pepper, cashew nuts), which was tangy, delicious and accompanied by fragrant coconut rice. Save room for dessert, as Mao has a menu of exotic and creative choices such as the Roasted Spiced Pineapple, Chocolate Spring Rolls and Matcha Tea Crème Brulee, as well as some classic selections including Sorbet and an Asian Fruit Platter. The Custard Buns were soft and airy with a creamy and rich custard filling; the ideal dessert for someone looking for something not too heavy or sweet. The Mango Cheesecake boasted a fresh and slightly bitter flavour to end the night on a sweet note.
中 国 经 验
Overall, our dinner at Mao was highly memorable and exceeded our expectations. The service was warm and friendly, the peaceful ambience and location were unbeatable with its exclusive views, and the contemporary Chinese menu was innovative, diverse and modern. All factors considered, this unique culinary experience is worth the higher price range and is ideal for a special evening with loved ones. With an inviting, majestic atmosphere and delicate Oriental touches, this is the kind of oasis you’ll want to linger around long after dinner is finished. Mao Restaurant is located at Max Beach Mijas, open for lunch and dinner. Check their social media or website for current opening hours. Take away available. Marbella Arena Aiming to Entertain Located just below the popular Centro Plaza commercial centre in Nueva Andalucía, the old Plaza de Toros bullring is being renovated, modernised and converted into an innovative venue that will serve as a versatile space with the intention to reinforce cultural and leisure events. Starting this summer, Marbella Arena will host concerts, gastronomical and cultural expositions as well as other events that will continue throughout the year on a constant basis. The programme will start on July 9th with performances by famous Spanish comedians Dani Rovira and Tomas Garcia, and the following two days will turn to theatre with the play “La comedia de la cestita”. There is a focus on comedy with the Marbella Arena as it is believed to be more necessary than ever during these times, and hosting musical and theatrical events supports a sector that has undoubtedly suffered during the pandemic. Julio Erostarbe, director of GPN Productions, explained that all events will follow the anti-COVID protocol and the expected capacity will initially be 1,500 spectators. The complex will offer the latest modern comforts and facilities, including a variety of indoor and outdoor venues, hospitality and catering. Marbella Arena is intended to offer a full annual calendar of events; therefore, we can expect even more top international acts and cultural events to cover all tastes and preferences.

The owners behind the hugely successful Indian Spice restaurant in Benahavis have now extended their culinary offer by opening an asian fusion restaurant - Lemon Grass Benahavis. The contemporary design of the restaurant offers a sophisticated atmosphere for dining. Enjoy a drink in the friendly bar area before dining in the cosy restaurant or on the outdoor terrace. The interesting and varied menu uses the freshest of seasonal ingredients and offers sumptuous meat and fish dishes along with curries, tempura, sushi, noodles and much, much more. The experienced kitchen team is headed up by Thai chef Ken - an asian fusion expert with over 20 years experience in some of the top asian restaurants on the Costa del Sol.

Econscious Construction Shipping containers are now available to convert into affordable luxury villas, think cost effective and ecofriendly. The German Schween family of respected architects and developers collaborated with real estate agent Sean Woolley of Cloud Nine Spain to create the Astonishing Collection of affordable luxury villas. Their plan is based on using and upcycling shipping containers and making them into luxury villas according to the taste and style of the buyers. Mr Schween claims that brand new containers are available worldwide, yet the vast majority are not utilised. Therefore, these containers will be used as “building blocks” to produce affordable and sustainable housing. There are no toxins in the containers and no excavation is needed, which allows costs to be cut back and avoids the need to implement heavy machinery. This new construction methodology, also known as green architecture, aims to decrease the cost and construction timescales and can be a solution to the lack of supply of affordable luxury villas that are appropriate for longterm living on the coast. At the moment, the shortest construction period is six months. CC Guadalmina 4, Local 88 29670 San Pedro de Alcántara (+34) 951 20 38 08 info@cloudninespain.com www.cloudninespain.com
