SENIOR DESIGNER Alma Roda Ros

Somehow we’re nearly at the end of 2016,can you believe it? We have pulled out all the stops this month to create something that will hopefully keep you entertained on the much longer evenings of late autumn. Featured on our cover this month is Mikael Segelström, whose Timeless Gallery in Puerto Banús has been one of Marbella’s artistic talking points since the day it opened its doors. Mikael is a man with a mission and has taken the decision to make the Marbella gallery his headquarters, while he administers his growing empire which includes galleries in Poland, Sweden and Miami. We also asked him about his plans for the future of Timeless Gallery in Banús, which include a ‘music room’ in which visitors can relax with a glass of wine while listening to music and observing one special artwork. On another musical front, it seems that the great controversy of the past few weeks has been the decision of the Nobel Committee to award the Nobel Prize for Literature to Bob Dylan. There have been some very heated debates between the Dylan fans, who think that the honour is massively overdue and the literary purists, who prefer to think that awarding the Nobel to a singer-songwriter effectively devalues the prize. Which side are you on? Maybe our feature will help you to decide! We are also delighted to note that these are exciting times for that popular venue, La Sala Banús. In a few weeks the team will be unveiling a glossy makeover, courtesy of those clever people at FOC. We can’t wait to see the finished result. Did you attend the Marbella International Film Festival? It’s always a key date in our diaries and this year was no exception. Cannes might retain the crown as Europe’s cinematic glamour puss, but MIFF is becoming increasingly popular and this year the festival welcomed films from 50 countries and managed to screen 100 films

CREATIVE DIRECTOR Constanza Mtz.

over four days, which is some achievement by anyone’s standards. This was followed by another great Marbella based movie event, the Mad Hatter’s Film Camp, a training ground for promising young filmmakers. Organiser, Sam Reynard, was very impressed with this year’s crop of talent, so it looks as though the future of our movie industry is in safe hands. We also feature that wonderful local golfer, Azahara Muñoz, who became the first female golfer to tee-off at the Olympics, before returning to crush all competition at the Spanish Ladies’ Open at Aloha Golf. What an amazing woman. So much for the action, now for the relaxation. Did you know that there is a real, old style hammam in Málaga? Of course, given the Coast’s Moorish heritage, it makes perfect sense that the city would still retain a flavour of the Middle East. The Hammam Al Ándalus Group maintains establishments in Granada, Córdoba, Málaga and Madrid, so there’s plenty of opportunity to enjoy a good, old-fashioned treatment in plush surroundings; Elle McKenzie reports. We loved the Makris-Iryoda’s team’s tribute to Salvador Dalí so much that we just had to pass it on. It’s amazing how much influence this Catalan Surrealist continues to exert 27 years after his death. Catch up with all of this, plus Ian Kuah test drives the Audi R8 V10 Spyder (do we like it? Yes, we do!), Padre Peter considers the history of bullfighting and KJ Elsdon reports on the face-off between printed books and e-readers. As Harry Hill would say, which one is better? There’s only way to find out – FIGHT! Have a great November, everyone! Till next time... Andy Clark

Timeless LOVE,

Constant CHANGE

Interview by Irene Moreno Photos by Irene Sekulic Grooming by Jess Miles During the past few months, bright young art entrepreneur Mikael Segelstrรถm has added two more galleries to his Timeless family: one in Warszaw (Poland) and another in Miami. Mikael cannot help but feel proud of the business in which he invests so much passion and dedication, as he tells us about the upcoming event, Big Boy Toys fair in Abu Dhabi, that Timeless Group will be attending.

12

T

his is without doubt an action packed season for Mikael. His plans have been evolving fast and he has no intention of stopping now, which is one of the reasons behind his brilliant success; his devotion to art means that constant growth is his default setting. When I ask him which markets or projects excite him at the moment he instantly mentions London and Luxembourg. Both provide him with the opportunity to work with architects and developers who help him to place art in-house, an idea he pursues constantly. Mikael is on a quest to change the vision that some people may have of art. He wants it to be appreciated as emotion and love, the belief he wants to transmit to his clients. Art can be a far more interesting addition to a house’s décor than a piece of

furniture, for art always has a soul and a back story that Mikael appreciates. Regardless of all these exciting international projects, another thrilling fact is that Mikael is moving his headquarters to Marbella. When I asked him why he chose this city to establish his company he explains that, despite his constant travelling, this is the place he always comes back to and where he has created a home with his family. But Mikael is also optimistic when he tells me that, “The city’s art market has changed a lot, evolving from people merely looking for an investment when purchasing art to actual art collectors. I don’t know if it is the time or if it is me actually being here that makes people notice Timeless gallery and approach me in that way.” If we take into account Mikael’s passion and the charisma that he radiates when talking about the artists he exhibits, it is clear how he can attract people to share his vision and appreciation of art.

The goal is always to reach out with love and passion, because those qualities don’t come in an instant. I am a bit crazy, so when I have an idea I really work it through.

13

He is designing the new space in Puerto Banús, a place when he can share art with passers-by, even if it is only by placing exquisite pieces by the windows so everybody has a chance to enjoy them. This enthusiasm is also visible when he reveals the artist he is currently exhibiting in Timeless Puerto Banús: Roberto Santo is a widely recognized half-American, half-Italian sculptor who works both in the States and in Italy. His works are stunning pieces that feature the human form, crafting it in bronze and marble. I am also interested in the way that Spain and Andalucía in particular inspire him to discover home grown artists and exhibit their work. Mikael

14

mentions how he works with the Spanish artists Paco and Miguel Naranjo and points how how he prefers taking their pieces to foreign markets: “What I basically do is an exchange. As they are already based in Spain, I give them a chance to go out into the world. Sweden loves Spain and the way these artists inspire me is more visible there.” When asking Mikael about his very special relationship with art he explains that this is something he tries to

capture within the environment of his galleries and now in the headquarters. “I know that many people are afraid even to go into galleries but I think they need to summon up the courage actually to go inside. A gallery is a place where people invest in pieces for their homes so it should be more of a homely environment for them and that is what I am trying to create with the new space”. He aims to break preconceptions and reconcile people with art galleries, making his spaces full of love and elegant homeliness.

Mikael promotes the enjoyment of art as an intimate moment, telling me, “We are going to have a music room to allow clients to listen to music while drinking good wine. In this room there is only going to be one piece of art so the client can focus on music and art at the same time and enjoy the combination of these two different media.” I ask if he enjoys mixing different formats and he confirms that the idea of combining two artists who are telling different stories is one of his aims.

Mikael is on a quest to change the vision that some people may have of art. He wants it to be appreciated as emotion and love, the belief he wants to transmit to his clients.

He also reveals how his artistic preferences tend to be classical, especially with regard to sculpture, but I push him to tell me what other formats are capturing his attention lately: “I would say video installations amuse me. It is something that I haven’t gone into so deeply but I like it and recently I have seen some very interesting presentations by different artists.” Despite being so young, Mikael has already established a successful and diverse career, so I ask what plans he has for 2017 and beyond. He says that the upcoming year is going to be devoted to events and creating

new and different experiences for all his galleries, “But the goal is always to reach out with love and passion, because those qualities don’t come in an instant. I am a bit crazy, so when I have an idea I really work it through.” Some of the ideas Mikael is working on already are the Art House and Roberto Santo’s exhibition. It is admirable to witness the enthusiasm that Mikael has for art and his personal project. He repeats that the most important message he wants to convey is love and so he wants Marbella residents to experience what he feels for the art he exhibits. For this purpose, he is designing the new space in Puerto Banús, a place when he can share art with passers-by, even if it is only by placing exquisite pieces by the windows so everybody has a chance to enjoy them. Mikael confesses: “I want to spread the love and show that everyone is welcome to my gallery. Life has given me so much that I want to give it back in the best way I know and I do know that I am good at presenting art”. We cannot but agree.

I

t seems that every year, when the Nobel Prizes are announced, there is a certain amount of controversy. Did that political leader really merit a Peace Prize when there are so many allegations of corruption surrounding him? Did the obscure poet with a very meagre body of work really deserve the Literature Prize when at least three acclaimed novelists with dozens of publications to their name have been overlooked? Should Dr. Whatshisname have been honoured with the Prize for Medicine when everyone is aware that much of his work has involved vivisection? However, this year the announcement of Bob Dylan as the Literature Laureate has really set a new standard for post-announcement discussion. Just what is it about this decision that has created a storm of protest? Robert Zimmerman. You know him: changed his name to Bob Dillon and then to Bob Dylan early in his career, the natural heir of American singersongwriters such as Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson and Hank Williams, wrote that song that Adele made famous, has had his compositions covered by hundreds of singers including Bryan Ferry, who dedicated a whole album to Dylan songs. He’s been part of the cultural wallpaper of all of our lives, albeit one who has possibly the most rabidly loyal fan-base in the history of popular music. Is there one person alive today who isn’t familiar with at least one of his songs? Probably not. He can be described, at the very least, as extremely famous.

One American cultural commentator even managed to upset the entire population of Wales by explaining that Dylan had chosen his name after reading the works of “the American poet, Dylan Thomas”. Even this, it seems, is incorrect. In conversation with his biographer, Robert Shelton, Dylan said, “Straighten out in your book that I did not take my name from Dylan Thomas. Dylan Thomas’s poetry is for people that aren’t really satisfied in their bed, for people who dig masculine romance.”

One thing that can be said about the announcement of his Nobel Prize; unlike the many scientists, writers and activists who have previously been honoured, Dylan needed no introduction. This time the problem was not one of obscurity but of genre; should a singer-songwriter really have been considered for one of the world’s leading literary prizes?

Whatever colors you have in your mind, I’ll show them to you and you’ll see them shine.

First to show their hand were the fans of other leading singer-songwriters. This was clearly a case of envy – why was Dylan given recognition that might just as easily have been awarded to Joni Mitchell or

17

Leonard Cohen? What did ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ have that ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ or ‘Bird on a Wire’ didn’t? This initial outburst was followed by an acknowledgement that perhaps other lyricists would be honoured in the future. Dylan might have been the first, but surely he wouldn’t be the last? Gradually the Cohen and Mitchell fans learned to join in the applause. Dylan was, after all, part of the same songwriting tradition and could reasonably be considered as a harbinger of things to come.

One thing that can be said about the announcement of his Nobel Prize; unlike the many scientists, writers and activists who have previously been honoured, Dylan needed no introduction.

For others, though, this was more than a case of the wrong lyricist being acknowledged. In a world where literature is constantly overlooked in favour of the more glittery allure of computer games, internet surfing and television, many argued that it was folly to raise a musician to the ranks of Knut Hamsun, George Bernard Shaw, Pearl S. Buck, Wole Soyinka, Harold Pinter and Doris Lessing. Dylan’s citation read that he was being awarded the Nobel Prize for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition” and, although few would deny the truth of this, many consider that perhaps a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys might be a more appropriate tribute. It’s not as if there haven’t been literary forays, of course. In 1971 a book of prose poetry, Tarantula, appeared, although even Dylan seemed less than enthusiastic about the project. Many critics likened it to John Lennon’s whimsical In His Own Write, others compared it unfavourably to the notes that Dylan had provided for Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited, in other words less a serious attempt to write poetry, more a clever marketing ploy to offload excess material. Years later, in 2004, his first volume of memoirs, Chronicles: Volume One, received a much more enthusiastic response from critics and fans alike. The New York Times reported that, “[the book] is lucid without being linear, swirling through time without losing its strong storytelling thread”. Yet, as the ‘Dylan as laureate’ refuseniks are quick to point out, 12 years have passed and there is still no sign of a second volume. No doubt Dylan is aware of the sensation that this decision by the Nobel Committee has created, but this is a man who has no fear of being unpopular. His decision to use electric instruments was something of a revolutionary act for a folk singer in 1965

18

The Entertainment Charts

and he was booed so soundly by purists at the Newport Folk Festival that he left the stage after only three songs. He also made himself unpopular after becoming a born again Christian in the late 1970s, attempting to convert fellow musicians and producers to his way of thinking with an evangelical fervour which was often not appreciated. Yet even his sternest critics have to acknowledge his importance in the development of popular music. Born in 1941, his 37th album, Fallen Angels, was released earlier this year and, while artists many years his junior seem happy to rely on compilations of previous glories to bring in the money, Dylan is still trying something new. Even if, in this case, it was an attempt to breathe new life

into standards from the so-called Great American Songbook. With a Nobel Prize under his belt it’s even more difficult to predict what Dylan will do next. Will he view it as a challenge to continue to write his maddeningly complex songs, or will it prod him into producing the long awaited second part of his memoirs? Whatever the rights or wrongs of Bob Dylan’s Nobel Prize, the debate offered yet another twist when critics were reminded that, in 1913, the literature prize was awarded to Rabindranath Tagore, an Indian writer who just happened to be a lyricist. It seems that this controversy still has a long way to run...

THE BATTLE OF THE BOOKS By Kj Elsdon

You have to love new technology, don’t you? It wasn’t so long ago that we were being told that the era of the printed book was over and that soon we would be downloading all our reading material on to Kindles, Nooks, Kobos and other e-readers. Given the advantages of storing one’s whole library on a small gadget, it made perfect sense at the time. But – and here’s the surprise – only a couple of years on, the old-fashioned book is not only holding its own, it’s again out-performing the e-book. What is the enduring romantic appeal of the printed page?

A

dmittedly I am one of those people who was happy to be a literary Luddite until relatively recently, but having acquired a Kindle Paperwhite at the end of last year I must say that the appeal of e-books currently has me firmly in its grasp. When you live a complicated bus journey away from your nearest bookshop and the local library specialises in large print editions of Catherine Cookson and James Patterson, your only options are online companies such as Amazon who will deliver to your door, which is an expensive hobby when your addiction to reading is as extreme as mine, or kitting yourself out with an e-reader. Having unpacked my Kindle, charged it and downloaded my first book (a freebie version of Ford Madox Ford’s The Good Soldier) it didn’t take me long to become thoroughly addicted to it. My devotion has been sudden and entirely unexpected; after several years of dismissing e-readers as a faddish attempt to reinvent something that needed no technological intervention, I find that I have not read one print book during the whole of 2016. So what is the appeal of the newfangled e-reader? Unsurprisingly there are many answers to this simple question, the first and most obvious

22

being its portability. A device such as a Kindle can easily be slipped into a handbag, so makes the perfect travelling companion, especially when one considers that thousands of books can be loaded onto it in advance. Freed from energy sapping distractions such as games, music and

TV, the battery life of the average e-reader is extraordinarily long and is constantly being improved. The newer generation of Kindles, such as Voyager and Oasis, have been designed specifically for regular travellers, being even lighter than their predecessors and containing long lasting batteries that can be charged quickly. Many e-readers also feature built-in lights, so if you are an insomniac who has to share a bed with someone who values their beauty sleep, you can read for as long as you like without disturbing your partner, however light sensitive they may be.

It’s quite surprising to note that not every print book has an equivalent in Nook, Kobo or Kindle format, but those that do are often sold at far lower prices. Amazon, in particular, specialises in savagely cutting the prices of its e-books, offering daily, monthly and seasonal deals, often for less than the price of a daily newspaper. The attractive pricing is coupled with the fact that e-readers have the capability to store thousands of titles, therefore book addicts can fill their literary boots without having to rush to IKEA to buy more and more Billy bookcases. Considered logically, there seems to be no downside to owning an e-reader and giving in to the very obvious appeal of the e-book. To employ a popular phrase, what’s not to like? Plenty, if you consider the opinions of many keen readers who swear that they will never buy an e-reader and consider that the era of the ‘virtual’ book is merely a blip in the history of publishing. The prevailing belief is that Kindle converts like me will eventually return to the printed fold with our tails between our legs. As one close friend said when I revealed that I had acquired a Kindle Paperwhite, “Don’t come crying to me when you go blind!”

The Entertainment Charts

The idea that the last thing contemporary readers need is to spend even more time gazing at a screen is a popular position among the anti e-reader brigade. It certainly seems likely that there might be some kind of price to pay down the line when a generation of Kindle aficionados reaches middle-age and finds that their reading glasses need to be eye-wateringly strong. However if, like me, your living room is configured in such a way that you are several yards from the nearest lamp, a backlit e-reader is indispensable if you prefer to spend the evening reading rather than watching TV. Of course, holding an actual physical printed book in one’s hands is a truly thrilling experience. In exchange for considerably more money than you would shell out for an e-book, the sensual appeal of a real book would be difficult to beat. There’s the smell of paper and ink for one thing, whether you are shopping at Waterstones or picking up a dog-eared copy of a well-loved detective novel at a second hand store. There is also a certain magic in thumbing through the pages, a process which cannot as yet be achieved via e-reader, a physicality of the reading process that, it cannot be denied, is missing from the Kindle, Nook or Kobo experience.

stored indefinitely until consumed and deleted, is viewed with suspicion. However, not all readers are quite as suspicious and have learned to embrace a world in which printed and electronic books coexist in perfect harmony. Another interviewee says, “I love them both. I use my Kindle for travelling and holidays and for downloading my disposable reads the murder mysteries and so on. I only buy African literature and my favourite authors to keep in hard copy. If I download a book that I love and will reread or simply want to keep, then I buy a hard copy.”

It’s probably too early to make any clear predictions about the future of electronic publishing and reading, but it does seem possible that both formats will ultimately exist quite happily, side by side. Printed book or e-reader – do we really need to make a final choice?

There is also a certain magic in thumbing through the pages, a process which cannot as yet be achieved via e-reader

In practical terms, though, the fact that e-readers are now falling behind printed books seems perverse, given their superiority on so many levels. Yet in May 2016 Britain’s Daily Telegraph reported that, “This year’s annual report shows physical book sales up to £2.76 billion in 2015 from £2.748 billion in 2014. Digital sales dropped from £563m to £554m, the first year-on-year fall since 2011 when PA (the Publisher’s Association) started measuring e-book sales.” Of course, books still make excellent presents and it must be said that lifestyle publications lack appeal in a digital format, so authors of bestselling cookery and interior design titles continue to sell strongly, especially around Christmas. Even the most rabidly enthusiastic fan of electronic books has to admit that they perhaps lack the solidity of their printed siblings. As one of my interviewees states, “This e-stuff is the ultimate capitalist dream. You are being sold nothing for what you pay, so you will end paying for the same thing again and again.” Given our current suspicion of tax-dodging, employee-exploiting big business, it is hardly surprising that, for many, the idea of a ‘cloud’ where books can be

Born to Run Bruce Springsteen

Mus Readt

IIn 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl’s half-time show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That’s how this extraordinary autobiography began. Over the past seven years, Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to these pages the same honesty, humour and originality found in his songs. Born to Run will be revelatory for anyone who has ever enjoyed Bruce Springsteen, but this book is much more than a legendary rock star’s memoirs. This is a book for workers and dreamers, parents and children, lovers and loners, artists, freaks or anyone who has ever wanted to be baptised in the holy river of rock and roll.

COPS & ROBBERS rule at MARBELLA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2016 With each year, Marbella’s International Film Festival grows and matures, making the event and Marbella’s place on the film circuit increasingly important.

T

he Marbella International Film Festival is in its eleventh year. It has taken time to develop the festival’s profile both in Marbella and internationally, and whereas, the programme for the festival in earlier years was less extensive, the 2016 event boasted films from 50 countries, including Spain, United States, United Kingdom, China, France, Iran, Bulgaria, Germany, Belgium, Israel, South Korea and Turkey. There were screenings of at least 100 films over the four days of the festival, which took place on September 28 – October 2. The H10 hosted the Gala Awards dinner, and the festival finally wrapped with a big bang of a party at La Sala Puerto Banús, which was

the perfect place for the glamorous assembly of stars and VIPs. The Marbella Film Festival is the flagship project of New World Trust, an organisation created to provide support for talented artists across the globe. Siamak Chakaveh and Philip Strange lead the Marbella festival’s organisational team and they have excelled themselves this year with the diversity of work they have brought to the event. Cines Teatro Goya provided a fabulous environment for viewing the films and showed they could host a ‘red carpet’ film premiere in a style equal to anywhere in the world.

Part of the charm of a festival is the eclectic mix of films that allow cinephiles to enjoy work that is often more artistic than ‘Hollywood Box Office’...

MIFF 2016 WINNERS It may not be Cannes, Venice or Sundance yet, but it is a festival with awards and this year, films from Israel, Germany, Bolivia, Spain and the UK were the main winners. Capturar, from Spanish director Fernando Merinero took first prize in the Documentary category for his humorous and unusual portrayal of the life of the actress who appeared in his first feature film. This involves surrounding himself with ex girlfriends who don’t always appreciate his attempts to capture them on camera. The UK took both the Best Actress (Hattie Gotobed) and Best Actor (Craig Fairbrass) awards for their performances in the films Daisy and London Heist. Julia Vargas won Best Director for Carga Sellada that involves a poisonous cargo on a train travelling through the Bolivian highlands and ends up with confrontations between the train’s passengers and enraged villagers, ending up in a situation that affects the whole country.

GOLDEN YEARS

The Best Feature Film went to the UK for director John Miller’s Golden Years had a cast that many British residents of Marbella will be familiar with. Bernard Hill, Simon Callow, Phil Davis, Virginia Mckenna and Una Stubbs are a gang of pensioners who refuse to accept the loss of their pension funds due to the financial crisis. Their solution is to rob a series of banks. As the trailer for the film says, it’s a film about “Banks, Bowls and Bingo”, told in a characteristically British comedy style.

GANGLAND GRIEF

Although, this film didn’t win Best Feature, its main protagonist did win Best Actor, and it does use Marbella as a main location. London Heist, directed by Mark McQueen, with Craig Fairbrass, James Cosmo and Nick Moran leading the cast, is a London-Marbella film that also showcased the British style of filmmaking. Craig Fairbrass is a veteran of UK television and cinema, with roles in London’s Burning, Eastenders and Rise of a Footsoldier, whilst James Cosmo will be remembered for Braveheart and Nick Moran for Lock, Stock and Two

Smoking Barrels. Steven Berkoff, one of Britain’s outstanding theatrical actors and no stranger to films, gave a polished cameo performance as Alfie, the father of career gangster Jack Cregan (Craig Fairbrass). When Alfie is killed, his son Jack sets out on a trail through London’s underworld and from there to Marbella, seeking out his father’s killers. It’s a revenge plot with some great cinematography of Marbella and a lot of ‘claret’ (blood) as they say in London, gets spilt. FILM FESTIVAL The Costa del Sol’s youngsters prove that you don’t need to be a veteran of the silver screen to produce an awardwinning film!

“ ” Stay mad, normal’s boring

F

ollowing hot on the heels of the Marbella International Film Festival that celebrated short films and features from around the globe and red carpet events that attracted Marbella’s glitterati to sip champagne and mingle with actors and directors, the young filmmakers who attended the Mad Hatter’s Film Camp had their own black tie awards ceremony where they shared their new skills and their fantastic imaginations with an audience of family, friends and industry professionals. The summer camp caters for ages six to eighteen years and whilst some kids opt to stay behind the camera, there are others who love to be in front of it. Sam said, “This year we were fortunate to have a vast spectrum of talent and the movies we produced were diverse and well thought through, covering almost every genre.” The Mad Hatter’s Film Camp, organised by film professional Sam Reynard, has become one of the more popular summer camps on the coast, especially for boys and girls who love the movies and who are dying to get

28

behind the camera rather than sit in the audience. This year the 30

camp participants made 10 films in two weeks, which is quite

an astonishing achievement. This was followed later by a film festival and awards ceremony at Fox Edge Studios in Guadalmina Baja, where upwards of 50 people attended the event that

was a mixture of BBQ with party and film premiere. The young filmmakers were encouraged to attend in ‘black tie’, but as Sam Reynard told us, “Nobody was limited to following that rule. We want to encourage the expression of individuality.” Drama and film professionals from the UK, Venezuela and Los Angeles, the

home of Hollywood, judged the films and apparently added an extra level of entertainment to the evening, so that guests enjoyed on and off screen performances. “It wasn’t your average film premier,” Sam Reynard chuckled, clearly delighted that his protégés and the professionals had delivered an evening worthy of his motto “Stay mad, normal’s boring.” This sentiment was echoed by Eduardo Sanchez, a Director of Photography from LA who said: “I cried, I laughed. What more can I ask for?” “We don’t just limit ourselves to our Studio, we adventure to all locations around Marbella, from the beaches to the lakes to the mountains. Any story the students dream up we try and make, if we don’t have the locations we give it a go in our 5X5 meter green screen. Due to the

success of last summers camp I hope to create more sets and better costumes for our students to use.” “We are also now hosting weekend film courses. Once a month we are putting a weekend aside to make a short film or music video. Last month we produced a short zombie movie and invited parents and friends to join us on the battle field as Zombie extras. All guests were treated with a BBQ and drinks. What more could a zombie ask for?”

The MadHatters Award Winners The ‘Best Film’ award went to “Implode.” This short was written and directed by Arman Alimoradian. The film is about modern warfare and the politics behind every decision that is made. It is a huge subject for young minds but perhaps it is all the more powerful for having the perspective of youth. It may be under two minutes

long but it packs a powerful punch and you can watch it on the Mad Hatter’s Film Camp channel on Youtube. It certainly demonstrates an ingenious use of local locations and the burgeoning talent of these young people, who may well one day be walking up another red carpet to collect a BAFTA or Oscar.

We want to encourage the expression of individuality.

It certainly so unds like a fu n evening and many of the young star s will be returning to ne xt year’s Mad Hatter’s Film Camp. Bu t, the final wor d should go to Sam Re ynard, who d eserves applause for having starte d something really amazin g for young pe ople in Marbella. His message to pa rents thinking of se nding their ch ild to the camp is: “Our goal is to nurtu re the talent within every studen t and boost their confiden ce in whateve r they choose to be . W

e have known for some time that physical touch (sexual and non-sexual) releases the hormone oxytocin in the brain. This hormone is associated with feeling relaxed, feeling safe, feeling like we can trust the person we’re with, feeling closer or better connected and much more.

When couples fall into a relationship rut, they can begin to pull away both mentally and physically. This is possibly one of the worst mistakes we can make , as it only perpetuates

feelings of being disconnected from our spouse or partner. In my free download, Seven Simple Actions To Transform Your Relationship, I discuss the fact that, by reinstating physical intimacy, we often find that the relationship ‘problems’ we think we have, suddenly become less important, if not completely insignificant.

Neuroscience research by Coan et al. (2006) explored the impact of physical intimacy between highly satisfied married couples on the brain and body’s response to threat. Married women were administered with an electric shock on their ankle while holding the hand of a stranger, while holding their husband’s hand and while standing with zero physical contact with anyone. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) indicated that the level of stress experienced by the married women during the administration of the electrical shock was lower when holding hands with the stranger, compared with not holding hands with anybody. Interestingly, the stress response

was significantly lower when holding hands with their spouse, lower than when holding

hands with the stranger and even lower compared with when they weren’t holding hands with anyone.

32

The research study suggests that

the

mere existence of physical contact between two human beings (even without any relationship existing between them) minimises the amount of stress we experience. That’s

pretty incredible in itself but what is even more telling is the fact that the level of stress we experience is significantly less when we are physically touching our spouse with whom we have a satisfactory relationship.

So even if you are in a very troubled, unsatisfactory relationship with your spouse or partner and you really don’t want to be physically intimate with each other (touch, kiss, cuddle, have sex) understand that by “faking it ‘til you make it”, i.e. being intimate when you don’t feel like it, will actually help you to save your relationship or marriage. In other words, instead of thinking, “I will be physically intimate with them when they stop making me angry and upset and stressing me out”, remember that being intimate again will help you to feel less angry and upset and stressed out , and thus help you to think more

positively and clearly about how you

can reignite the love and passion and repair the relationship. At the end of the day, relationship problems equal big stress. If you are in a stressed state for a prolonged period of time, research shows you will become tense and unable to think clearly about even the simplest solutions. This then becomes a vicious cycle if you act impulsively by pulling away even further, mentally and physically.

Even if you are in a very troubled, unsatisfactory relationship with your spouse or partner and you really don’t want to be physically intimate with each other, understand that by being intimate when you don’t feel like it, will actually help you to save your relationship or marriage.

“Fake it ‘til you make it” by reinstating simple daily and weekly intimacies, however much you don’t want to and don’t believe it will make a difference - it will! Remember this research to fuel your enthusiasm about being intimate with your partner during a troubled phase. By honouring this simple trick you’ll begin to feel closer to your spouse again, less stressed, mentally clearer, more trusting and safer and then find it much easier to resolve any relationship issues you need to overcome.

PET/CT:

ACCURACY THAT AIMS TO HEAL

A

picture paints a thousand words; this famous phrase is of even greater relevance when related to the constant medical advances being made in the area of diagnostic imaging, with its continuously increasing precision, specificity and clarity in every part of the body. X-rays allow us to take a first look at any part of the body and offer a basic investigation which can be complemented by more specific imaging, such as ultrasound, magnetic resonance and tomography. Nowadays science and technology are moving forward towards complementary imaging resources, achieving a more detailed assessment. One example of this is PET-CT, a technique that provides metabolic information obtained by PET (Positron Emission Tomography) and anatomical information through CT (Computerised axial Tomography). Both investigations performed simultaneously, complementing each other, has meant a revolution in the diagnosis and treatment of tumours. This procedure also known as PET imaging or PET scan combines nuclear medicine and tomography to allow detection and measurement of tumours by identifying, locating and quantifying the consumption of glucose, increased glucidic metabolism being one of the primary characteristics of neoplastic tissue.

Investigations like this now allow the detection of disease at an earlier stage in its process than might have been evident with other imaging investigations and this undoubtedly strengthens preventive treatment. In recent years experts consider PET-CT to have been one of the most influential techniques developed in the diagnosis and monitoring of oncology patients.

what is the procedure for pet-ct? For the first part of the investigation, the patient receives the radioisotope 18F-FDG intravenously. When having this, the patient must lie down, in silence, in a semi-darkened room for about 45-60 minutes for the correct distribution and metabolism of the drug throughout the body. Once this period of resting has finished, the patient goes to the PET-CT chamber to start the investigation which lasts approximately 20 minutes. the benefits that pet-ct provides:

“

There are many benefits provided by this diagnostic test, since it provides unique information which is impossible to obtain through other diagnostic imaging procedures.

Back To The Bathhouse

The Relaxing Culture of

the Hammam By Eleanor McKenzie

T

he reign of the Moors in Andalusia introduced a number of cultural influences that Europeans were unfamiliar with, including the Hammam. The Moors may have gone, but their bathhouse culture lives on. Prior to the coming of the Romans, the peoples of the countries that now constitute modern Europe weren’t renowned for their love of bathing. The Romans brought their very modern for the time Thermae hot baths, and these are the origin of the Hammam or Turkish steam bath. However, whereas you may have trouble finding a Roman Thermae to steam clean yourself in, the Hammam is now the oldest surviving bathing tradition in the world and it continues to be popular with devotees who enjoy its rituals. The word ‘Hammam’ means “spreader of warmth” in Turkish and Arabic and it was the early Ottomans of Istanbul who took the Roman concept and blended it with their own style to create a cleansing ritual that conformed with the requirements of Islam. At first only men were permitted to use the Hammam, but over time women were given access and it became an important social centre for them where they could escape the isolation of confinement to the home. As you might guess, in this period of history, women couldn’t visit the Hammam at the same time as men, but it is interesting to discover that if a husband prevented his wife from visiting the Hammam, it was considered legitimate grounds for divorce.

40

The Moors arrived in southern Spain in 711 AD and their government of Al-Ándalus lasted until the fall of Granada in 1492 when Ferdinand and Isabella, Los Reyes Católicos, reconquered Andalusia. It is thanks to the fact that the siege of Granada did not lead to heavy fighting that much of the Moors influence on the city’s architecture remains intact, especially the magnificent Alhambra palace. The Moors brought with them, as part of their Islamic culture, a tradition of bathing that was widely used in medieval Spain which has been revived in the late 20th century by an enterprising group called Grupo Al Ándalus, or Al Ándalus Business Group.

a changing room, cold, warm and hot water rooms. The main room occupied the centre of the Hammam and was a warm room with a stove. It was also the largest room where people spent most of their time and was a place to rest, have a drink or to talk. Decoratively, the rooms were adorned with tiles of geometric patterns and light flooded in through star-shaped openings in the ceiling, which you can see in a number of the Moorish buildings across Andalusia. These openings would originally have had coloured glass coverings in calming hues of blues and greens to emphasis the atmosphere of peace and tranquility. The modern Hammam Al Ándalus observes all these

The Hammam Al Ándalus The Al Ándalus Business Group and its ‘Hammam Al Ándalus’, currently has traditional bathhouses in Granada, Córdoba, Madrid and Málaga. The baths, which are located in the old quarters of each city, are all distinct and based on each bath’s historical roots: Nazari in Málaga and Granada, Omeya in Córdoba and Mudéjar in Madrid. The group has meticulously observed the original idea of the Arab Bath, which had different rooms, such as Glow Club Puerto Banús

traditions and its facilities are considered the most sophisticated. As the Al Ándaus Business Group says: “ Our facilities use traditional and cutting-edge materials to make the space an example of a connection between older traditions and current technology.” They aim to transport the visitor via water, perfumes and decoration to a time when Andalusia was a cultural melting pot. Visit one, and, as the Hammam Al Ándalus slogan says, you will be “bathed in history.” The baths at each of its centres offers three rooms with water set at different temperatures, and each room is clearly named: hot, warm and cold. The steam room, relaxation room and hot stone room top off the visit, where you can enjoy the more traditional Al Ándalus Ritual.

The Moors brought with them, as part of their Islamic culture, a tradition of bathing that was widely used in medieval Spain which has been revived in the late 20th century by an enterprising group called Grupo Al Ándalus

Hammam Al Ándalus Málaga The Hammam Al Ándalus Málaga is the closest for Marbella residents. This hammam opened in 2013, so it is a relatively new attraction to the city. It was however, 10 years in development, a task that included a meticulous study of the city’s Nazari architecture, such as the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro. The Nazari dynasty, formed in Granada, ruled Málaga in 1296 and it is thanks to Yusuf I who ruled from 1333 to 1354 that the city has the stunning Gibralfaro fortress, which continued to be used for military purposes until 1925.

The Hammam in Málaga is in Martyrs Square at the heart of the museum district and is in a building adjacent to the Mudejar tower of the Church of the Holy Martyrs. In Spain, this Hammam building is considered groundbreaking because it has “a geothermal energy supply that sends water 150 metres deep to achieve the ideal water temperature.” There are always special offers available and discounts if you pay online, plus combinations of bath, massage and museum tickets that make an ideal day out in the city. Glow Club Puerto Banus However, if you don’t want to make the trip to Málaga, you can visit a Hammam GLOW BEAUTY in Playas del Duque, Puerto Banús where you can experience the Arab bathing ritual that relaxes mind and body. Plus, you can combine the pleasures of this ritual with another treat from the amazing range of

beauty therapies and body treatments in modern surroundings. Six Senses Spa Marbella The Six Senses Spa at the Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa has a Chocolate Hammam ritual that involves a back massage and skin exfoliation followed by a “warm and hydrating chocolate mask, rich in antioxidants.” The ritual finishes with a mini facial and hair wash with conditioning treatment. When you want to take out from the modern world, a hammam ritual may be the answer you’re looking for and whichever hammam you choose, you can be sure of an exceptional experience, and one that has been enjoyed for centuries.

CRYOTHERAPY A

ARRIVES IN MARBELLA

re you a sports person who needs to repair damage or fitness levels? Or, are you looking for a method of reducing muscle pain and inflammation, or a condition such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, asthma or a sleep disorder. Cryotherapy, which professional athletes have been using for years to get back on track quicker, is now available to everyone, and it has arrived in Marbella. Cryotherapy Marbella opened this summer offering many health, performance and beauty benefits. This is Marbella’s first Whole Body Cryotherapy chamber, but the technology has been popular for many years for its effective treatment of sports injuries, arthritis and muscle pain, as well as a host of inflammatory health conditions.

sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, frozen shoulder, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and other chronic disorders, as well as speed up post-surgical recovery. “It may seem strange that the cold can do so much, but think of the concept of an ice bath, or putting ice on a bump or bruise - we know that the cold works to reduce inflammation. Cryotherapy is a dry technique which reaches much colder temperatures, so a short session can achieve much better results and is much more comfortable than a prolonged soak in an ice bath. Since we opened we have seen amazing results from people suffering from psoriasis, sports injuries and even chronic fatigue, and people love the energy it gives them and how soft their skin feels when

Advocates of cryotherapy include: NBA superstars such as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, Jamie Vardy and the whole Leicester City football team, boxer Floyd Mayweather, Cristiano Ronaldo, golfer Padraig Harrington, the Irish and British Lions Rugby teams, not to mention stars Justin Bieber, Demi Moore, Daniel Craig, Kevin Bacon and Ben Stiller.

they come out of the chamber. We’d encourage everyone to come and give it a try!” enthuses Ludmila Morozova of Cryotherapy Marbella.

WHERE CAN I FIND CRYOTHERAPY MARBELLA?

You can find Cryotherapy Marbella, managed by Ludmila and her team of professionals at the Dynamic Gym in Le Village Commercial Centre, Carretera de Istan Km.1 just off the Golden Mile. cryotherapymarbella.com

WHAT IS WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY?

Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC), is a technique of exposing the body to very low temperatures of between -140°C and -160°C for a period of 1 to 3 minutes in order to trigger self-healing mechanisms, boost metabolic processes, decrease anxiety and fatigue, improve sleep and stimulate the immune system. The extreme cold triggers the body’s fight or flight response, which produces endorphins and redirects oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood to the vital organs. Once out of the cryo chamber this oxygenated blood and endorphins are released back to the peripheral tissues, decreasing inflammation and helping to mend damaged muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments.

HOW WILL IT BENEFIT ME?

F

or a lot of people the term strength training produces images of bulky bodybuilders lifting heavy weights and flexing their muscles. The truth is that strength training can be defined as any type of movement or exercise that imposes an increased demand on your muscles and/or central nervous system. This means that if you are a complete beginner simply moving and manipulating your body weight can be considered strength training.

44

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

In fact, mastering the basics of good movement using just your bodyweight is vitally important if you are going to take advantage of all the benefits strength training has to offer. It is only as you progress and gain strength that it becomes necessary to use extra weights. It is now widely accepted that strength training is an essential part of any well balanced exercise program. This is especially true when it comes to the female population. In the past lifting weights was almost exclusively a male pursuit as the myth of “bulky muscles often deterred female interest. Today, however, things have changed and women who use strength training to achieve and maintain the bodies they want is no longer a rarity. This is mainly because strength training is a proven way

Today, things have changed and women who use strength training to achieve and maintain the bodies they want are no longer a rarity. This is mainly because strength training is a proven way to achieve sustainable fat loss as it helps to increase metabolic rate to achieve sustainable fat loss as it helps to increase metabolic rate (energy used at rest) by maintaining and adding lean tissue. But there are many more benefits to strength training, especially for women. Proper strength training can help with postural issues and pelvic floor strength which are important considerations before, during and after pregnancy. It also helps to increase bone density and prevent the onset of osteopenia and osteoporosis which can affect women after the menopause. Other health benefits include an increase in insulin sensitivity which can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and it can also help to keep blood pressure values in a healthy range. On top of all this there is also a huge psychological benefit as feeling strong and capable can boost self-esteem and confidence levels in a unique and unrivalled way.

The Beauty Barometer

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mind-blowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

Is It Your First Time? If you haven’t previously dyed your hair, colouring it for the first time can be pretty intimidating. With so many options and variations, how can you be sure that you will end up with the look you want? This month Jonathan reveals how to achieve (and maintain) the perfect colour. The colour virgin The truth is, having your hair coloured for the first time can be nerve-racking. Most colour technicians recommend that you wait until you’re 15 or 16 years old before you touch your hair, which I tend to agree with. Though, saying that, I did highlight the front of my god-daughter’s hair when she was eight, but only because it really did enhance the curl. Basically, I think you should be of an age where you can afford to maintain the colour or, if it’s down to your parents, you need to be realistic about how much it’s going to set them back. Coloured hair takes a lot of upkeep and you need to be mature enough to handle that (and some of my adult clients haven’t even

50

reached that stage yet, bless them!) Be realistic about how much maintenance you can handle. If you know it will be difficult (or expensive) to get to the salon every six weeks, stick with a shade that’s close to your natural hair colour. Do your research The best way to find a good colourist is through recommendation. If you are in your local area and see someone with a hair colour that you like, ask them who their colourist is. If you stick with it, you will find the same names keep popping up. Do remember that, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. If you are led by special offers – well you’re going to get ‘special results’.

Communication is vital Great colour is gained through teamwork between you and your colourist. Make sure you know what you want to achieve and what you are trying to avoid. Be specific. It’s absolutely essential to bring in pictures of the looks you want as long as it’s not a bloody collage! A good colourist can match the shade or steer you toward a colour that will be more flattering for you.

The Beauty Barometer

Great colour is gained through teamwork between you and your colourist.

WHEN CHANGING YOUR HAIR COLOUR YOU ARE GOVERNED BY YOUR SKIN TONES AND NATURAL EYE COLOUR. FOLLOW THESE RULES AND IT MAKES CHOOSING SHADES MUCH EASIER.

Damage limitation Hair always gets a little damaged when applying colour. Invest in your colour by investing in your ‘at home’ regime. You’ll have to switch your shampoo and conditioner, so get a specific product recommendation from your colourist. Different dye jobs require different types of care. You can never over-treat your hair. Your hair regime should ALWAYS include weekly treatments. I love the Kerastase range, full stop. For my high lift tint and highlight clients I tend to suggest the Masque Chroma Riche €38,00, which is nourishing and protects and boosts radiance. The Masque Chroma Captive €38,00 is ideal for reds, browns and coppers and, for those with fine, over-processed hair which has been weakened by bleach and high lift tint, your new best friend is the Masque Force Architecte €38,00. What NOT to do Please, please, please not sit on your phone the whole time. It makes our job so much harder. I DO have a great trick though, and I only have to do it once. I tend to dab a little colour on the client’s phone and then coyly say, “Oh! I wonder how that happened?” Honestly there are only a few reasons you are allowed to be

on the phone when having a beauty treatment - someone has died, it’s Louis Vuitton and they are calling you to say your much coveted bag is on sale or your ex-husband has been found in bed with Pablo, the next door neighbour’s gardener. And while we are on the subject of what annoys me, stop moving your bloody head! Honestly, I need a head brace for some of my regulars. My auntie had cerebral palsy and managed to keep her head still more effectively than some of my clients. In fact one of them could give the girl out of The Exorcist a run for her money. If you want perfect highlights sit goddamn still, woman! What went wrong? When colour goes wrong, don’t always look at it as a negative, as it can be part of the journey to getting the colour you actually wanted. Colour is part of a journey. If you don’t like the result, tell your colourist. It’s no good saying everything is fine and then going outside and screaming from the nearest rooftop and slagging me off in three different languages. As good as I am, I am not psychic and I can’t put it right if you don’t tell me. Most of the time the colourist will be able to fix the problem. A lot of my work is correcting mistakes made by other hairdressers but sometimes even I can’t even work my magic. One of my clients, on a recent trip back to the UK, had booked in for her colour to be done at her local salon. Her usual colourist was away and for some reason, God only knows why, the replacement colourist mixed up her record card and obviously didn’t have the common sense necessary to realise that what the card was saying and what she needed didn’t match. So he slapped bleach all over her roots. This then took the top section of her hair off leaving her short on top, very much in the style of of the lead singer of the 1970s glam rock band, Sweet. Now I know I can fix most hair disasters but, as I couldn’t pull a time machine out of my backside, all we can do is wait for it to grow back.

Ta-ra!

PICTURE

People say a picture is worth a thousand words and they’re right. The lighting, the setting, the make-up, the styling - all of these elements are taken into consideration when producing a fashion editorial. But what about the non-verbal messages people send in photos? Photography: Jose Serrano Muah Andrea: Jorge Sanchez Muah Dominique: Jorge Fortes

It freezes a moment and allows us to observe the small details like the length of a skirt, the fit of a jacket, a facial expression or subtle body language

“Strike a pose” is a very common expression in fashion, referring to the idea of posing in front of a photographer. However, posing is not something we merely find in fashion editorials; it is a sort of acting, performed by people in many portraits and even ordinary photographs. These have the capability to convey information about the complex and everchanging relationship between people and their style, identity, mood and culture. Therefore, every photograph tells a particular story. It freezes a moment and allows us to observe the small details like the length of a skirt, the fit of a jacket, a facial expression or subtle body language, the hints that enable us to read between the lines and build a deeper understanding of the story behind a single shot. So, while body language is a complex science, we want to give you a few general rules that you can use to give you an added edge. Let us show you how.

Push your chin forward and down when facing directly towards the camera, as the jawline will be extended and stronger lines like cheekbones will be formed.

Another trick is to open your mouth slightly. With the mouth completely closed, the jawline clenches and it can remove any point of interest from an image.

This collaboration has produced a series of images that highlight the dissolving borders between what is considered fashion photography and photography as art.

based in Miami, Palm Beach and Brasilia. The Dalí photoshoot is the work of Flavio Iryoda and hair and makeup artist, Araceli Bravo, important elements of a team highly regarded for their fashion photography. The MakrisIryoda Group has frequently worked with the same team of stylist, make-up artist and models to deliver a cohesive body of work, and their approach is similar to that used by movie directors who are widely regarded as auteurs, such as David Lynch, Ingmar Bergman and Martin Scorsese.

The team’s aim in this series, showcasing the glamorous dresses

designed by Yoly Muñoz, was to depict Dalí’s world of chaos, madness, passion and creativity in juxtaposition with the world of haute couture. In addition to the characterisation of Dalí himself, with his famous moustache, references to the symbols found in his most famous works - the telephone and the melting clock face - are discreetly placed throughout the images. The naked male models add a hint of classical Greek beauty alongside the Pop Art style of Richard Hamilton. It is a fashion photoshoot that poses more questions than answers, something of which Salvador Dalí would certainly have approved.

V10 Audi adds a vertical dimension to their all-conquering R8

82

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the AUDI R8 V10 SPYDER

83

TORQUE TALK

W

hen a car has as charismatic a motor as Audi’s naturally aspirated V10, you can bet that the convertible version will be something special, and to look at the new Audi R8 V10 Spyder is a pure object of desire. With its canvas roof neatly tucked away under the rear deck, the cab-forward R8 Spyder takes on a sleek and dynamic look that brings to mind the image of a Riva Aquarama speedboat. The R8 Spyder windscreen is raked at the same angle as the Coupe’s but stands about 20mm taller. “This extra A-pillar and screen height might not sound like a lot on paper but it makes a big difference to the proportions of the car, especially with the roof down,” explained Martin Leilich, development engineer for Body & Interior. Roof down the Spyder exudes a joie de vivre, both from behind the wheel and

84

from appreciative onlookers, that shows good taste rather than brashness. The thumbs up signs from a few riders of fast bikes and truck drivers said it all. The bad news, it you could remotely think of 540hp this way, is that the Spyder is only available with the base motor. But do not despair, for what this entry-level version of the 5,204cc Audi/Lamborghini V10 looses in sheer top end go over the full fat 610hp version in the R8 V10 Plus, it makes up for by being a much more visceral driving experience at normal road speeds. Both versions sing with the same razor sharp, silk ripping V10 voice, but the base engine sounds and feels less angry in the last quarter of its rev range. Once past 6,000rpm, the Plus version lunges explosively towards its higher 8,700rpm rev limit until the lightening fast sevenspeed S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission seamlessly swaps ratios.

In comparison, the more mildly tuned motor delivers a more linear push in the back all the way to its 7,800rpm redline, feeling more ‘normal’ if that word can be used to describe this charismatic engine. Its peak torque of 540Nm at 6,500rpm is 20Nm down on the Plus version. You definitely feel the absence of the 70 extra horses in the R8 V10 Plus, a loss compounded by the fact that the Spyder is 70kg heavier than the Coupe, corresponding to the weight of an average sized passenger. However, compared to its predecessor, the new Spyder is 25kg lighter at 1,720kg, and 0.2 sec faster over the 0-100km/h sprint, which now takes 3.6 sec. The 200km/h marker comes up in 11.8 sec on the way to the cars 318km/h top speed. Audi continue to lead the pack in terms of build quality inside and out, and the

R8’s cabin is a delight in both design and execution. Looking forward from the driver’s seat, the dashboard is identical to the Coupes, with MMI as standard and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit as the highend solution. The centre console is also familiar, save for the button that operates the powered roof. Al fresco driving is a real wind in the hair experience, so you need to pop the wind deflector in place on the bulkhead behind the seats and raise the side windows for maximum comfort. In this configuration, even blasting along at 160km/h is not uncomfortable providing the air outside is warm. On a very hot day, the ice-cold air conditioning and a baseball cap are your best friends. Conversely on a bright but cold winter’s day the heater

and heated seats do their work to keep you at a comfortable temperature. Luckily for us, October in Barcelona meant a comfortable 23°C. One of the must have features on any self respecting convertible today is the ability to open and close the powered hood on the fly at up to 50km/h. Having driven all afternoon with the roof down, I decided that the last 25 km of the test route should be devoted to testing comfort levels in the cabin with the roof in place.

87

TORQUE TALK

But the experienced driver who finds the Coupe to be perfect apart from the fact that its roof does not open to the sky should be prepared to accept a tradeoff in the form of lower and less satisfying dynamic ability.

I timed the closing operation of the Webasto-made roof at exactly the 20 seconds claimed by Audi, whilst gliding through a set of road works at just under 50km/h. With the soft-top in place, all the wind buffeting disappears and your immediate surroundings become as calm as in the Coupe. At a gentle cruise you do not have to raise your voice in conversation, and with the dynamic settings in Comfort mode, the R8 Spyder is a perfectly civilised way to get from A to B. If you plan a weekend away though, you will have to be very disciplined as the front luggage bay only holds one airline carry-on case. With its V10 motor in full battle cry, the R8 Spyder is a great ‘tunnel car’. Drop a gear or two and gun the throttle in the open Spyder and the deep basso profundo exhaust note overlaid by the silk ripping scream of the engine arcing towards its 8,000rpm crescendo is your own little chunk of aural heaven from the time when V10 motors were in vogue in F1. The sound of air and fuel combusting in a 1-6-5-10-2-7-3-8-4-9 firing order and blasting spent gases out of the two big exhaust pipes momentarily turns the tunnel into the world’s biggest audio amplifier. Anyone driving behind you will think that Armageddon has arrived and the sky is falling! In terms of structural reinforcement, the sill elements of the R8 Spyder’s ASF (Audi Space Frame) structure use the exact same cross-section design as the Coupe, albeit implemented with a thicker gauge

88

of aluminium. And where the Coupe has a plastic undertray in front, the Spyder’s equivalent is made from aluminium to provide extra torsional stiffness. Unless they are built around a carbonfibre centre tub like the current McLaren models, open cars tend to be significantly less rigid than their fixed head counterparts. And so it is with the R8 V10 Spyder whose torsional rigidity of 19,500Nm falls far short of the Coupe’s 35,600Nm. That said, its structure is 55% more rigid than that of the original Spyder. This is the technical reason why the Spyder leaves the starting blocks with just the base motor from the R8 Coupe. But from a mission statement point of view, an open car is more about enjoying cruising under the warm sun than trying to wring out a fast lap time on a racetrack, so the overall premise works just fine. In fast sweepers the R8 Spyder is rock solid, the spring and damper rates of the basic non-magnetic ride version being a tad softer than those of the Coupe. The suspension breathes well in a way that confers a good ride at low speeds, with iron-fisted stability apparent on fast motorway sweepers. However, up in the mountains, the fact that the Spyder’s structural rigidity is just over half that of its Coupe sister is telling when you are pushing hard on twisty roads like the ones that made up the most challenging part of our test route. Here I found that when exiting tight bends under power the loadings imposed on the shell by the terrific grip of

the quattro drivetrain and the fat tyres, coupled to the amount of power and torque on tap challenged the normally fine synchronicity between the front and rear axles. Compared to the Coupe whose front end chases apexes like a bloodhound, the Spyder’s more limited dynamic repertoire is manifest through less front-end bite when turning into a tight bend, followed by a discernibly greater tendency towards understeer as the shell flexes under load. On the way out of these bends the seat of my pants told me that the lower structural rigidity led the front and rear axles of the Spyder away from the lock-step partnership that is a defining characteristic of the Coupe’s brilliant chassis dynamics. Of course I am describing the Spyder’s behaviour under a level of provocation that most owners will never explore. But the experienced driver who finds the Coupe to be perfect apart from the fact that its roof does not open to the sky should be prepared to accept a tradeoff in the form of lower and less satisfying dynamic ability. As a matter of fact, the same compromise affects the Ferrari 488GTS versus its Berlinetta sister, so the R8 Spyder is in good company here. Unlike some of its rivals the R8 Spyder is not a one trick pony. Thanks to its quattro 4WD, snug hood, and comfortable and sophisticated cabin, it is a convertible supercar that can be used all year round. Things really don’t get much better than this.

A lot of people are not aware that there are organisations that strive to uphold professional standards in our industry. I’ve always been keen that Conflict adheres to reputable policies. Having an active role in the WAD and other bodies such as the Association of British Investigators hopefully helps to reassure the public that the best in our business undertake to operate ethically.”

Mike’s investigation of a blackmail case also won him the prestigious Investigator of the Year award at the WAD’s annual conference in Bucharest. WORLDWIDE RAPID RESPONSE

AWARD-WINNING INVESTIGATIONS

Conflict Marbella taps into the wide range of services from London-based parent company Conflict International, offering worldwide assistance with local representatives on the coast able to offer bespoke solutions based on specific needs almost anywhere. Mike says membership of organisations such as the WAD creates a global network of reputable investigators.

Mike’s award of Investigator of the Year came as a big surprise as it was judged against many other high quality nominations all entered anonymously so judges could rule on the work involved without knowing the name of the nominee.

“The importance of having professional operatives available across the world cannot be understated. Very often, investigations aren’t confined to just one country so being able to quickly deploy an investigator who is licensed to operate in the country or countries of interest is vital. A company such as Conflict can quickly build a reliable database of contacts who know the area and importantly the jurisdiction they are working in. We can then gather evidence knowing it will be fully admissible in any legal proceedings.”

The client was a high-net-worth individual and because of his profile, his identity and business sector have been withheld. He had been blackmailed and extorted for a sizable amount of money and was reluctant to take Mike’s initial advice of contacting the police as he felt it may have affected his reputation if the blackmail persisted. Instead, Mike was asked to operate discreetly to identify the blackmailer with a view to bringing the matter to a satisfactory private conclusion. Conflict conducted a full technical sweep of the client’s office and other

addresses and discovered that remote spyware had been installed on a PC and sensitive information had been gathered. A hand-delivered letter was forensically analysed which gave further intelligence. The client was fully briefed and advised to maintain his daily routines while he was placed under counter surveillance. A deadline given in the blackmail correspondence was ignored and eventually the client was approached by a third party warning that information they had would be made public. This approach was filmed and the person was followed to an address. Further research then linked the third party to an organized criminal gang. Once links to a gang were established, Mike notified the authorities who logged the information and he briefed them on the sensitive nature of the case. He was keen to put future safeguards in place so a trusted law firm quickly secured a court injunction order.

“A company such as Conflict can quickly build a reliable database of contacts who know the area and importantly the jurisdiction they are working in. We can then gather evidence knowing it will be fully admissible in any legal proceedings.” A meeting was then arranged between Mike and the primary blackmailer which was covertly recorded. Once the evidence gathered by Conflict had been shown, a visibly shocked blackmailer was warned that any future threat would result in the police being alerted and that he would be arrested and charged. The threats stopped and the client was able to maintain his privacy. A case like this gives a real insight into how discreet investigation can work effectively in difficult situations where the protection of reputation and privacy is paramount.

WHO WENT TO By Eleanor McKenzie

Marbella’s own Azahara Muñoz made 2016 her year when she became the first Spanish woman to tee-off at an Olympic golf tournament before returning home to win the Spanish Ladies Open at Aloha Golf.

A

zahara is one of the best Spanish golfers in the world rankings and the 28-year-old was understandably very proud to represent Spain at the Olympics. Her qualifications for being part of the Spanish women’s team, which also included Carlota Ciganda and captain, Marta FiguerasDotti, were impeccable as she had won two Sollheim Cups, the French Female Open twice and also had two other wins on the American Women’s Circuit under her belt. Her achievements at the Sollheim Cup, which is the women’s equivalent of the Ryder Cup, are also something that she can be proud of, as can Marbella and the whole of Spain. As previously mentioned, she has been a Sollheim winner twice; in Ireland in 2011 and in Colorado in 2013. She was also a member of the Sollheim team in 2015, where her team wasn’t so fortunate, but, nevertheless, another Spanish female player has never achieved this level of success. Perhaps it is unsurprising that she is doing so well on the international circuit, given that she has learnt her game on the fabulous courses of the Costa del Sol. With the benefit of year round play, her home turf, so to speak, has played a major role in her career and she received the Lady Golf Award for the Best Spanish Professional Player in March 2013, when she was still only 24. But you could say that 2016 has definitely been her year.

92

A YEAR OF FIRSTS The Rio Olympics was a first for golf and for Azahara. Golf had not been an Olympic sport since 1904, so there was as you might imagine, quite some interest among golfers worldwide in its re-emergence at Rio. For local girl Azahara, it was also something of a premiere occasion, as she became the first Spanish woman to tee off at the Olympics. A month after she’d returned from the pleasures of playing in Brazil, she was competing at the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España Femenino, the Spanish Ladies Open tournament, where she thrillingly managed to beat American Beth Allen at the final hole.

But, not only did the girl from San Pedro win this trophy, she became the first Spaniard to win it. This tournament took place at the delightful Aloha Golf Club in the heart of Nueva Andalucia’s Golf Valley, where Azahara “fired rounds of 72, 66, 70 and 70 to finish with a 72-hole total of 10-under-par,” according to the report from the Ladies European Tour.

This was actually Azahara’s fourth Ladies European Tour title, but the fact it took place only a few minutes drive from her hometown made a huge difference to this young golfer.

As you can imagine, it was a rather emotional occasion for Azahara Muñoz, who told the press: “It’s amazing. A victory is always a victory and it’s nice but winning at home is incredible. You know, having everyone here, my family, my friends, I can’t “It’s amazing. A victory is always even describe it.” She further added: “It means everything. a victory and it’s nice but winning I love playing at home and finally we got this tournament at home is incredible. You know, back and hopefully for many years. To be able to play having everyone here, my family, more here and just sleep at home, it’s my friends, I can’t even describe it.” amazing.” If you missed her playing at Aloha or at the Olympics, keep an eye out for more local and international appearances from this golfer that Golf magazine calls “a match play wiz.” Azahara is hopeful that the success of golf at the Olympics will encourage more people, especially women, to take up golf, and when you’re surrounded with such an amazing choice of courses to play on along the Costa del Sol, it really helps make the decision much easier. Plus, you might just find yourself on the course with Azahara Muñoz, the girl from San Pedro who went to play in front of the world on a golf course not that far from Ipanema!.

BULL!

94

O

ne of the fiercest and bravest of all animals is the toro bravo, or Spanish fighting bull. Bullfights were known in the times of the pharaohs, and it was this species of bull, with its African origins, which spread across northern Africa and entered Spain. Developing from the auroch, an enormous and dangerous wild animal, in Spain it became known as the Bos Taurus ibericus, with a physique and temperament which set it apart from all other bulls. As it spread throughout the peninsula, and even beyond the Pyrenees into France, sub-types began to appear with variations in girth, length and colouring, depending on the region involved. These differences exist even today, and a true aficionado can tell immediately from which region of Spain, even which herd, the animal comes. The origins of Spanish bullfighting (more correctly called “corridas”, or bull running) are lost in the mists of time. It is said that Don Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (1043-1099), more commonly known as “El Cid Campeador”, was the first to spear bulls - from the relative safety of horseback! This practice continues to this day as “rejoneo”, although whilst this was once a favourite pastime amongst the Spanish nobility, it was roundly condemned by the “Frenchified” Philip V (1700-1746) and virtually vanished from the scene for two hundred years, only being revived by Antonio Cañero (1885-1952). To protect the horses the bulls have their horns blunted and shaved some seven or eight inches. It nevertheless requires superb horsemanship to engage in this form of corrida. One of the greatest of such horsemen was the Count of Villamediana (15821622), upon whom Tirso de Molina is said to have based his original “Don Juan” (c1630). The first true matador, Francisco Romero of Ronda (17001763), may have started his life in the ring as an assistant to the mounted rejoneador. As the nobility deserted the bullring, so their followers took their place, engaging the toros bravos on foot with cape and sword, and the bulls have their horns untouched! However much the styles and methods of the corrida have changed over the centuries, one thing remains constant. The magnificent bull himself. Bred most carefully by breeders, some families have been in the business for centuries. The practice of breeding specifically for the ring began in Valladolid. Bulls

from this region participated in royal festivities in the 16th and 17th centuries. As late as 1878 bulls from the herd of Pablo Valdés y Sanz fought in the ring in Madrid to mark the wedding of Alfonso XII to Maria de las Mercedes. (We should note in these days of equality that he inherited the herd from his mother, Gregoria!). Such beasts can be identified by a brand, and a mark on the ear. These are placed when the bull is weaned from its mother at six months old. As the bull enters the ring a further emblem, in the breeder’s colours, is fixed to it. An interesting reference to this practice is made in “Tauromaquia” by “Guerrita” , writing at the end of the 18th century. Speaking of the Navarre breed of bulls (now extinct, but which sported long hair) he wrote: “These bulls are the terror of bullfighters, due to

José Gómez Ortega, “Joselito” was the youngest bullfighter to receive the title of “matador de toros”, at the age of 17. He met his death on the horns of a monster called “Bailador”. 700 kilos of dancing bull is a force to be reckoned with! their extraordinary agility. They have the habit of jumping over the barrier, causing people to flee. They performed in Madrid for the first time on 7th January 1794, wearing green bows…” In 1834 bulls from the “Real Vacada” (royal breed) appeared in the name of the Queen Regent in Madrid wearing blue and silver bows. Such identification ensured and ensures that only the finest animals take part. That having been said, todays bulls tend to be smaller than their nineteenth century counterparts. Such beasts weighed up to 700 kilos, and generally speaking were more cunning and dangerous than the bulls of today. José Gómez Ortega, “Joselito”, (1895-1920) was a child prodigy, and was the youngest bullfighter to receive the title of “matador de toros”, at the age of 17. He met his death on the horns of a monster called “Bailador”. 700

kilos of dancing bull is a force to be reckoned with! Such a dangerous beast is seldom seen in the ring today. Nevertheless, a good toro bravo is a noble and perceptive creature, and it is said that only such an animal can make a torero. The archetypical fighting bull is known as a “pastueño”. According to the Reglamento Taurino of 1962, fighting bulls must be between four and six years old. They should be noble in appearance; with lustrous and well kept fine hair, a small lean head with erect dark horns, a deep chest and flat stomach. They should have narrow powerful haunches, slender legs, and small dark rounded hooves. This animal knows full well what is going on. It does not tire itself out with useless charges, but reacts promptly to being provoked, and steadily presses its attack on the source of its provocation. The reason for this is that a bull calf is first tested at the age of two. This is known as its “tienta”. The method varies. In Salamanca, for example, the test takes place in the bullring itself with a pike being used to test the animal’s bravery. In Andalusia the trials are held in open country, with a vaquero armed with a pole attacking the calf’s flank. When the calf tires of this treatment and turns on its attacker, the trial is halted. The braver the calf is, the sooner it is released. Such treatment has the effect of making the bull more dangerous. It is an intelligent animal, and remembers that attack is the best form of defence. For this reason the festival of San Firmin in Pamplona is a festival for only the foolhardy. The bulls running through the streets in the morning are due to appear in the bullring. What better way to prepare oneself to face a torero in the afternoon than to gore an idiot in the morning?

It is also vital to know that Bedeur beds encourage healthy sleep because each bed is tailored to the individual, and the company founders are experts in delivering bespoke beds and a unique service that has the client’s wellbeing at its heart.

The Bedeur Sleep Philosophy The quality of our sleep is affected by a number of factors: lifestyle is an important influence and our levels of exercise as well as our diet and stress levels all impact on our sleeping hours. Your bed plays an important role on your journey to truly healthy sleep. That’s why Bedeur works on every single detail so that the bed conforms to your body as much as possible. And it’s not just the firmness. The airiness of the bed and its thermoregulatory abilities are very important as well. Therefore, Bedeur only uses natural materials of exceptional quality, which when combined create a harmonious balance of heat, dryness, and lightness. The company also focuses on hygiene, which is why it offers a First Class service that includes cleaning the bed at a client’s home as part of its offer. The firm also points out that because it chooses materials with an emphasis on purity and quality, your sleep will never be disturbed by the presence of unwanted allergens.

Choosing the right Bedeur bed You can choose every detail yourself, from the size and composition of the mattress, box and topper, to the design of the headboard and legs as well as the selection of the surface fabric. To ensure that your new bed fulfils your needs, desires and personality, Bedeur provides a personal service in its showrooms to help you with your selection. After all, the feeling that you’ve made the correct choice is just as important for relaxed sleep as the bed itself.

Springs or rubber? The basic criterion when choosing a bed is the composition of each layer and the firmness of the bed. For each model series you can choose between a design with steel springs or natural rubber in a mattress and a box. Steel springs are standard in a continental bed and allow you to set a wide firmness range. If the presence of metal in the bed is undesirable, then the design with natural rubber is right for you. Rubber features unique sensory properties and provides

A stylish range Bedeur offers styling that is contemporary and minimalist. Its Bedeur I model is a massive bed that promises perfect sleep for even the most demanding person. The company’s Models II and III are both designed with the modern residence and lifestyle in mind, and the firm also makes children’s beds that bring comfort to sleepyheads. And, if you want a different style, then Bedeur can provide that too through its Individual Service. Bedeur beds are exclusive and timeless, and they will ensure your sleep feels luxurious as well. TO ENJOY A

RECEPTION:

facelift La Sala Banús has long been considered an institution in the Marbella area. Opening in 2010 it has since risen to international fame, with guests coming from all over the world to experience the hottest seat in town, as it is known. Well known for creating a brilliant buzz and an amazing atmosphere, it is easy to understand why people continue to return. It is therefore with great excitement that the FOC Design team can proudly announce the upcoming major refurbishment of this amazing venue this November. Appearance has always been of utmost importance at La Sala and, after opening the successful Oak Garden & Grill, it was time to refresh the La Sala Puerto Banús hotspot. Tasked with the complicated project of refreshing - but not losing - the current vibe, we have rearranged the floorplan a little to allow extra seating, while maintaining the airy and elegant feel of the venue. Keeping the signature ‘modern but glamorous’ aesthetic associated with La Sala, we have introduced a smoky and sexy colour palette inspired by a textured flamingo wallpaper with grey, charcoal and smoky gold colours. Anthracite grey stingray effect fabric and smoked glass pendant lights in reception are complemented by a backdrop of the flamingo wallpaper and an aged gold reception desk with slick black granite surface, creating intrigue right from the start. In the main bar the theme has been continued with black iridescent hexagonal tiles bejewelling the bar front, a carpet effect granite polished concrete-look tile around the bar, oxidised gloss finish hi-top tables and bar stools in moody slate velvet fabric. The existing La Sala branded floor light will be given a new lease of life to shine all day and night whether you’re enjoying a light lunch, a quick drink or dancing all night on top of it!

When complete, courtesy of some carefully chosen accessories, it will provide a lovely bright space day or night with classy glass globe lighting.

Bathrooms will be given a lift by placing more black and gold marbled slate in the back of the cubicles and, in the ladies’, we are adding a small dusting of glamour with more bevel-edged mirror tiles and smoked glass pendant lights. Not being strangers to time constraints we are ready for the mission and have spent weeks preparing for the event however being given only 7 days to complete this refurb is certainly challenging. Having worked in the industry for such a long time we have every faith in our team and tradespeople. We hope you are as excited as we are and that you will come along at the end of November to see it for yourselves - words won’t do it justice!

HEAVY METAL By Amy-Rose McDowell Interior Designer at FOC Design

O

ne of the most exciting trends to emerge from this autumn’s Maison & Objet show in Paris was mixed metals. It doesn’t have to be harsh or cold - in fact quite the opposite - and this style is not limited to those with large budgets or vast spaces to fill. In fact, it can be tweaked to fit any area and taste. With so much to choose from the options are endless, but that doesn’t mean you can throw metals together and expect it to work every time.

Your room

Consider the wall colour carefully, if you have a dominant colour or feature wall it sets the scene from the beginning. If you have cooler colours in general then cooler metals will work and, if the room is a warmer colour, then use the appropriate colours. If you are willing to start from the beginning you can go all white, which looks beautiful with any of the metals, or stick to a neutral palette on the walls and enjoy the artistic license you will gain from this starting point. If you would like the metal element to be the feature wall itself, then request some wallpaper samples so that you can see how this finish will look throughout the day - metals are very deceptive and change with the light so what you love in the morning you might hate in the evening.

Colours

Opt for colours that you know will work together; black metal will go with most other colours and looks stunningly sultry with smoked gold and gunmetal finishes. Team these with luxurious soft furnishings and you have the perfect mixed metal colour scheme which is softened by the glamorous fabrics. A good way to achieve a glam look is using gold which has been toned down. Perhaps a little over-used in the 1980s, it has gained a bad reputation but it’s worth resurrecting. Try not to go from one extreme to another placing stark silver next to copper can clash unless there are some other tones in between linking the two. It’s okay to blend warm and cool tones but ‘blend’ is the operative word!

Don’t be harsh!

As mentioned before, it is important that if you are using metal you complement it with softness. Use fabrics that have a soft sheen or an effect like crushed velvet, these finishes will work with the harshness of the metal to ensure that the room still feels comfortable. Try teaming some luxe faux fur throws, rugs or cushions with your metals, an economical way of creating a stylised look with a couple of items.

Gold and silver

There is a common misconception that gold and silver should not be combined. Obviously if you personally don’t like them together then they will never work in your home - after all it’s you who has to look at it. But if you’re avoiding these two just for the sake of it then consider changing your mind. Silver and gold can work beautifully together - the silver tones down the gold and the gold warms up the silver and together they look effortlessly glamorous all year round. Try a gold frame and glass coffee table with some silver accessories such as candle holders or frames. If you’re not convinced but still want to find a way to mix them, blend chrome with brushed chrome or satin nickel. Likewise, gold can be mixed with brushed gold and brass or oxidised copper for a warmer palette. Lighting by Eichholtz

A few years ago polished and satin copper made a huge comeback and many opted for this finish over all the other metals. Don’t choose something just because it’s a fad or because it’s in every home decor store you enter - choose the finishes you genuinely like otherwise you will quickly tire of them and by the time this happens all the shops and magazines will have moved on to the next ‘big thing’ anyway. Some say that there is no such thing as too much when it comes to mixing metals and that’s true to a degree - if you have combined complementary colours then you can just go for it, but if something isn’t working in the scheme don’t be afraid to remove it and try something else until you create your perfect heavy metal haven.

Our resident food and nutrition expert, Bettina Campolucci Bordi, offers us some healthy advice

MARBELLA Photographies by Alex Nowicka

What is it? Access to good, fresh, real food and the basic skills to cook it has the power to transform lives, and that is what the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation is all about. Working in the UK, US and through the Good Foundation in Australia, we are leading a full-scale and ongoing Food Revolution to improve the health and happiness of future generations, through the food they eat. From our food education programmes delivered at a local level, to our national and international campaigns that influence policy on key issues, we aim to revolutionise the way people feed themselves, and their families.

Become a Revolutionary Meaningful, lasting change is built from the ground up. If we each take a few small steps to shift the way we grow, distribute, purchase, prepare and prioritise food, the ripple effect would be enormous. Governments will react with change in policies, businesses will change practices and therefore entire generations will be equipped with the skills, knowledge and resources they need to eat good, nutritious food for a healthier, happier life. As a revolutionary, you can join in with the campaigns and unite with to make a huge noise in the fight for a better, healthier and happier world for every child. From advocating change at a community level to shouting about campaigns on social media to learning how to cook and passing on your skills, everyone has a role to play.

HOW TO BECOME AN AMBASSADOR If you’re interested in making a change in your local area and involving your school you can find out more about the programme and fill out the application form online. once you have joined let us know and be part of the local Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ foodrevmarbella/ and start making noise about your activities.

What is Happening in Marbella? Allot has happened since we last talked about the Food revolution. This term we have got Atalaya College onboard with introducing cookery workshops as an extra curricular activity every Friday afternoon with children varying in ages every month. Between the school, Rebecca Cifarelli and Nathalie Le Bourgeois and myself we have come up with a model that works. We are hoping that more schools will follow suit both the english speaking and spanish schools.

What are we working towards?

What Can You Do? You decide how much you do. Change can start at home, simply by learning to cook a few nutritious meals and passing those new skills onto friends and family. Change can mean getting your kids in the kitchen, supporting local food or inviting your loved ones around a table to enjoy good food, cooked from scratch. You can also advocate change at a community level, by signing up to the Food Revolution, keeping abreast of all the latest news, and supporting Jamie and our partner’s campaigns in making our united voice heard. Together, we can all make small changes that en masse create a huge impact.

Getting as many local schools involved in food education in any possible way. Working towards the food revolution day that is celebrated world wide each year in May. Reaching out and inspiring more local revolutionaries - we cannot do this on our own and need as many people on board as possible. Join us ! Sigh up! Share! Get in touch.

METHOD This dish deserves its own page. I have a love affair with this combo and have had it for quite some time now. It’s the perfect balance between creamy and salty, oily (good oil) and filling. There are various things you can spice your mashed avocado with, although I have to confess, I do prefer the salt & pepper combo to anything else.

Knowing which wine is the perfect match with each dish is the mark of a real expert, so we are very lucky that our sommelier, Julio, has all the answers.

Winery

of the Month Bodegas El Nido: The Best of Both Worlds El Nido winery is located in the Valle de La Aragona, 10 kilometres north of Jumilla. The vineyards consist of very old Monastrell vines (also known as Mataró or Mourvèdre) all ‘vaso’ trained and oriented north-east, and 30-year old Cabernet Sauvignon vines on north facing hills. Jumilla is surrounded by mountains and the best wines come from the higher-altitude vineyards.

El Nido Winery is located in the top slopes, so named because it is the highest altitude in the municipality. The vineyards, located in the surrounding of the winery, are planted on soils mostly of limestone over substrata of sandy soil. Bodegas El Nido is a collaboration of the Gil Family and renowned Australian vigneron Chris Ringland. The first harvest sold was the 2002 vintage under the brands of El Nido and Clio.

D-Wine’s Advice: El Nido 04, 05 or 06 and Clio 06, 07 or 08

The Top Line “El Nido” is a selection of the best grapes of the vineyards, mainly produced with 70 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon variety and completed with 30 per cent Monastrell. The Second Label “Clio” is a blend of 70 per cent Monastrell variety combined with 30 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon. Both wines are full-bodied, opulent, explosive, lush and broad but juicy with great density, a mix of savoury dark fruit flavours accented by sexy floral and Asian spices and a lengthy finish. They are one of the most sought-after wines from southern Spain.

The Perfect Match

As far as food pairings go I would suggest the Chilean Wagyu Entrecote or the Nebraska Black Angus Sirloin Steak along with Chimichurri or Pepper Cream Sauce, something that is able to stand up beside these opulent blends. As we gear up for colder days I suggest coming to D-Wine and having a taste of El Nido or Clio. These wines will keep you, your family and friends warm this winter.

WHERE GOOD

matters

I

f you want to enjoy a really great night out at a restaurant where food is considered a matter of life or death (and would you really want to waste your time at an establishment where it is any less important?) then please take our advice and make your way to Garum, as fast as you possibly can. Unbelievably, this shrine to fine dining has been open for 12 years and its superb beachfront location and haute cuisine has attracted a regular stream of repeat customers from the day that it first opened its doors. If you have been asking yourself what ‘garum’ means, then we can reveal that it is a fish sauce that dates back to Roman times and is thought to have originated in the historic settlement of Boloña, near Tarifa. Considering how much the Romans loved a good feast and the depth of culinary knowledge that the Garum team has, this slightly esoteric name makes perfect sense.

This shrine to fine dining has been open for 12 years and its superb beachfront location and haute cuisine has attracted a regular stream of repeat customers from the day that it first opened its doors.

On the evening that we visited it was so warm that we were able to take advantage of the magnificent terrace, a place that is always packed during the summer and seemed no less busy on this beautiful autumn night. There’s nothing quite like enjoying a close-up view of the Mediterranean while enjoying some of the best food available on the Coast.

Garum scores on many points: there’s the funky design of the interior for a start, then there’s the friendly welcome extended to customers, whether they are repeat visitors or newcomers and superb, personal service from the staff, many of whom have been part of the team for years. Another impressive feature is the extensive Wine List, which showcases some of the best Spanish and French grape varieties and vineyards. If you fancy yourself as a bit of an expert, then you cannot fail to be impressed by the range of choices available. Over a very relaxed couple of hours we were able to enjoy some of the finest dishes on Garum’s extensive menu, which were suggested to us by the team. We started with the Foie Gras Pralines with Black Pepper, Thyme and Almonds, served with Blackberry and Balsamic Ragout, Lamb’s Lettuce Salad and Apple Bread. It was at this point that we began to realise just how important presentation is to the Garum team because this looked as good as it tasted. Maybe these flavour combinations aren’t the most obvious, but they were utterly delicious and served as a reliable indicator of what was to follow. The Pastrami Salmon with Szechuan Coriander, served with Wasabi and Mustard and Dill Ice Cream was equally impressive, the strength of the flavours contrasting with the texture of the ice cream and generally giving the taste buds a good workout. Several members of our party regularly order salmon when eating out and all agreed that this was definitely a dish that made them think about the versatility of this very popular fish, an adaptability that is rarely pushed to its limits. This somehow allowed the salmon to be the shining star of the plate, while the accompaniments

provided a fine, harmonious backing and, as did the previous course, it looked almost too good to eat. Cod is another popular fish that is often eaten but rarely served in an interesting way, so we were delighted with the Wild Cod with Lime Crème Fraiche, Green Beans and Black Caviar. Again, this was a delight for the eyes, beautifully presented on black slate ‘plates’ that allowed the colours to shine. The flavours, of course, took care of themselves, the caviar acting as the perfect boost to the more delicate flavour of the cod. We had heard many complimentary comments about the excellence of Garum’s lamb dishes, so we were thrilled when we noticed that our menus contained New Zealand Rack of Lamb served with Mashed Peas and Spinach, Saffron Potatoes and Mint Basil Butter. There are some excellent restaurants in the Marbella area and the establishments that enjoy a solid reputation are rewarded with a loyal customer base. COSTA CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS 2016 After the huge success of previous years, once again the community will join together to collect presents for six orphanages along the Coast, as well as for the charity, Amusuvig, which provides support for children of domestic violence. Businesses across the Coast volunteer themselves as drop-off points, so locals can purchase a gift, wrap it with festive paper and label it with the age and sex of each intended child, before leaving it at the designated points. Autos Alquileme have very kindly donated use of their vans for collections and distribution of the gifts to the children. “I really hope we are as successful this year as we have been previously,” said Kara Robertson of Costa Christmas Collections.

Children range from one to 18 years however Kara explained that in general people tend to buy toys for the younger children with few gifts bought for ages 15 to 18. With more teenagers than ever this year she is hoping people will think of this age group when shopping. With over 300 children to help, organisers Kara is appealing to any venues which could offer themselves as a drop-off point to get in touch. Telephone Kara on 672 575 644 or visit the Facebook page of Costa Christmas Collections.

If you would like to be a drop point please contact Kara Robertson on 672575644 or karacaradas@yahoo. com. All gifts will be collected on December 15th. Drop off points so far include: The Boardwalk Restaurant, Marbella Slainte Restaurant, Puerto Banus The Playwright Restaurant, Elviria Becketts Restaurant, Marbella Kids Kingdom, Estepona Bardou Salon, Puerto Banus IPIN Global, Los Boliches Reflections, Central Plaza Puerto Banus LoulouJane, Puerto Banus Mick Mahon Tattoo, Benalmadena Loft and Roomers Marbella- Mijas Bar Marie La Cala Hills Robs Barbers Los Boliches Streets of London La Cala The Jammy Olive Cafe, Calahonda

MARATHON WOMAN Receiving thanks is always a pleasurable experience but, after Amanda Miles’s family received help from The Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, she decided to go the extra mile, quite literally. When Amanda’s sister Sarah became seriously ill, first with ulcerative colitis and then with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare condition that affects the bile ducts, it soon became

160

clear that she needed specialist help. The dedicated team at Kings College Hospital in London did a wonderful job in treating her but, at the age of 23, she was told that she would need a liver transplant to survive. She was placed on a list and eventually Sarah received a healthy liver, which gave her a second chance at a normal life. Now Amanda is doing her bit to support this very worthwhile charity by competing in the 2017 London Marathon. “It will definitely be a one time experience for me!” laughs Amanda, who is mindful of the support her family received from The Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, not to mention the immense courage of the family of the girl whose death meant that her sister could have a new liver. “Sponsors will be helping a family support their child through an

incredibly tough time,” says Amanda, who remembers all too well the stress that her parents suffered during the worst of Sarah’s illness. If you would like to support Amanda and The Children’s Liver Disease Foundation please visit her fundraising page at Just Giving: justgiving.com/fundraising/Amanda-Miles

HOME FAIR COSTA DEL SOL Don’t miss the Home Fair Costa del Sol, which takes place in Estepona’s Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos on Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th of November from 10:00 to 18:00. The fair will feature a wide variety of exhibitors who can guide and advise you about many different aspects of homeowning and living on the Coast. Local specialists in interior design, construction and renovation companies, architects, service providers, real estate agents, health and lifestyle advisers, legal and financial experts, insurance brokers and many more will be on hand to provide guidance and advice.

This event, the Woonbeurs, covers all aspects of living on the Costa del Sol and its surroundings. Visitors can also benefit from the informative and informal seminars given by local specialists and meet Dutch and English speaking professionals, whose client bases are attracted to the Woonbeurs because of its specific focus on this particular region. This will be an excellent one-stop shop in which people from Holland and Belgium in particular can find out all they need to make the transition from interested outsider to Costa del Sol resident. It is a chance to experience

all this region has to offer, as visitors will be able to help themselves to relevant information and quiz the experts on any topic that interests or concerns them. Anyone who is interested in attending can register online for free entrance or pay 10€ at the door. Entry for children up to 12 years old is free. woonbeurscostadelsol.com/en

ART SENSATION AT ELEGANT SUNSO A glorious afternoon party was held at Sunso’s stunning new furniture showroom, a celebration that combined an exciting art exhibition with a fashion show, accompanied by cocktails and multicultural tapas, which was a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. The new Sunso showroom in Plaza Antonio Banderas was the perfect setting to showcase the work of the chic fashions by Parisian designer Nadia Acimi and the extraordinary artworks of Phillippe Vignal. The stylish guests enjoyed a welcome cocktail on arrival, which was followed by an endless and very generous feast of tasty tapas based on Lebanese, Cuban, Italian and British cuisine. Congratulations to Max and Maxine, the event organisers, and the entire Sunso team for a fantastic afternoon party that was an event with true Marbella style!
