FAITH, HOPE & CHARITY
ime and tide wait for no man – and certainly not for me! – so we’ve been firing on all cylinders to bring you another bumper issue of SOCIETY that is jam-packed with articles and features that we know you’ll love! It’s Breast Cancer Awareness month so it’s a decidedly pink issue – From our gorgeous cover girl, Paloma Faith, who’s flaunting her curves in a risqué photo shoot for Agent Provocateur, to informative and enlightening cancerprevention advice from our resident health and nutrition guru, Bettina – we’ve gone pinkcrazy and, whilst it’s not really my colour (!) – it’s been an absolute pleasure to publish.
Of course it wouldn’t be SOCIETY if we weren’t hitting all the greatest parties in town and oh… we did! From polo on the beach to fashion shows and cocktail parties, we attended them all – and of course there was the Gibraltar Music Festival, which was one of the most fantastic events on the coast! This pink issue may seem like everything is rosy but don’t let that fool you – there’s plenty for the guys too! Ian Kuah takes the BMW 7- Series for a whirl and gives us his expert opinion, Tourbillon Finance tell us what to do with our money, the Wallem Brothers talk music and Padre Peter takes us on a history lesson in Fuengirola. We take a look at some charitable causes from both the Warwick Rowers and the Last Chance Animal Charity – who both have calendars released this month and local spiritual adviser and animals’ rights activist Mark Bajerski heads to Thailand on a plight to save elephants – another worthwhile cause!
The guys at HC Clinic spell out the lowdown on breasts and Daniel Boardman from Reflections gives us some great advice on how to look fabulous AND donate to the Breast Cancer Awareness Charity at the same time …and of course there’s Natalie Rose Kern to keep us a-breast of everything else! As we move into autumn and begin to slowly layer on our clothes once more, we’ve got autumn trends from the SiskoAkt Sisters as well as Elle Morgan and fantastic fitness regimes from Lisa Marie Robinson to keep us in shape during the colder months. We met up with the founders of Aviator fashion brand, whose autumn collection is sensationally stylish and will make you yearn for suede and colder days - and we enjoyed an unforgettable meal at Top Thai – the ultimate spicy spot to banish away the winter blues!
We’ve also got wine suggestions and recipes so that you can indulge (or be good) in your very own kitchen! Food, fashion, fun and fitness, cars, cash and calendars… We think we’ve pretty much covered it all this month! I like to think I’ll finally get a rest in October but as the diary keeps filling up… It doesn’t look like it! I’ll leave you now to get tickled pink – and I’ll see you next month! Until then, Andy Clark

It’s been an unforgettable summer here in Marbella - and I don’t believe the Society team has ever attended so many parties, soirées, concerts and events before, but there were some truly extraordinary moments that we won’t be forgetting in a hurry. Amongst the many live music events and concerts that we bopped about at on the coast, we were fortunate enough to attend the Gibraltar Music Festival – without a doubt its best year ever… and it was here that I stumbled upon Paloma Faith. “Hola España,” she called out as she arrived on stage…and the crowd fell silent. For a moment you could have heard a pin drop, as dismayed Gibraltarians stood in shock, wondering if they’d heard correctly, and then as the realisation sunk in that she had indeed offended them in the greatest way possible, loud boos erupted around the stadium. This was possibly the worst opening of an act I have ever witnessed and then it got worse as Paloma continued; ‘It’s great to be in a place that’s half English and half Spanish.” The crowd, who are only too proud of their British identity and to whom the idea of being “half Spanish” is the worst insult one could throw at them, was not impressed and the booing continued, but Paloma was not fazed. Dressed in a brightly coloured, skin-tight, buttock skimming PVC dress, the East London girl went on to deliver one of the most fantastic performances of the weekend. And this is what Paloma is all about. She’s quirky, fun, fearless and has a coquettish charm about her that makes you forgive even the most damning of insults or foolish of blunders. Whether it was a deliberate political statement she was making (her father is Spanish, so it could well be!) or whether she really is as foolish as she would have us believe, Paloma has the hide of an armadillo; she’s brazen, brash and audacious. Yes, she wants you to like her, but more importantly she wants you to notice her – and notice her, you will! From her eccentric fashion in clothing to her scarlet red lipstick, Paloma’s individual and unique style screams out “Look at me! Look at me!” Paloma isn’t one to shy away from the spotlight and likes making the headlines. She’s daring and outrageous and demands your attention. Before she was a singer she was an actor, and before that she was a dancer. She’s also dabbled in being a life model, a magician’s assistant, a ghost on a theme-park ride and a shop girl for the luxury and risqué underwear brand Agent Provocateur – for whom she is now the face – and body! Agent Provocateur’s Autumn/Winter campaign, which has just been released with a
18
stunning video entitled ‘Knickers Forever,’ stars the 34-year-old singer as she flaunts her curves in skimpy lace, silk and satin pieces from the new collection. Slipping into a silky, satin frock with a low, cutout back for the campaign, the flame-haired Cockney lass struts towards a full-length mirror and plants a big lipstick kiss on the glass. Spinning around in a lace lingerie set, Paloma tosses her head from side to side before falling into a fit of giggles and showing off her hourglass physique. She’s not your average lingerie model like those Victoria Secret’s Angels, who all have legs up to their armpits, washboard stomachs and golden, sun-kissed skin, but she’s the ideal choice for Agent Provocateur, whose image is more burlesque, old school glamour than Barbie doll perfection. Kitted out in a stunning selection of lace bras and suspender belts, satin knickers and sexy stockings, as well as the signature Agent Provocateur baby pink dress that was her uniform for three years during her shop girl days, Paloma exudes confidence and looks every inch the glamour puss as she poses in a sultry manner for the shoot. Also synonymous with Paloma, along with her red lipstick and ginger hair, is her garish Cockney accent. Born to an English mother and Spanish father, she was raised by her mother in Stoke Newington and, as such, sounds like a character straight out of a Dickens novel. Her mother encouraged her to dance and took her to ballet classes throughout her childhood. After completing her A-levels at City and Islington College, she went on to study for a degree in contemporary dance at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. She then studied for an MA in Theatre Directing at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, funding her studies by working in various part-time jobs, including her career at Agent Provocateur. Paloma’s first foray into music began when she mimicked famous soul and jazz singers, including Etta James and Billie Holiday, whom she admired and cites as influences for her own work. She met her managers Jamie Binns and Christian Wåhlberg of Lateral Management in 2007. Binns was “Completely blown away”, later saying: “I wasn’t sure what this girl was going to do – she was an actress and a singer – but there was just something about her in that artistic realness that when I came out of the meeting I called Christian and said, ‘We have to do something with this girl!’ Paloma released her debut single ‘Stone Cold Sober’, in mid-2009 and it reached Number 17 on the UK Singles Chart. Her second single ‘New York’ was released in September 2009, and reached its peak position in early October, rising to number 15 on the UK Singles Chart. She then released her debut album Do You Want the Truth or

Something Beautiful? on 28 September 2009. She wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album whilst in the UK, Sweden and America and recorded it entirely in London. It debuted at number 14 in the UK Albums Chart and later peaked at number 9. It remained in the chart for sixteen weeks and became BBC Radio 2’s ‘Album of the Week’ from 19 September 2009. In the same year, Paloma appeared as a guest vocalist on Basement Jaxx’s Scars album and on American hiphop artist MF Doom’s album, Born Like This. In 2010, Paloma embarked upon her first headlining tour, which The Times described as being “Full of theatrical artifice, but based on the rock-solid foundation of Paloma’s sensational singing voice and a personality that sparkled like a rough diamond”. Over the coming year Paloma performed a live set for the BBC’s Radio 2 Introduces... and gave an interview to the station’s host, Dermot O’Leary. She also appeared on current events programme This Week discussing her views on the British education system with Michael Portillo, and was a guest on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, where she performed the song ‘Upside Down’. On Friday
20
Night with Jonathan Ross she belted out her single ‘New York’, and she also appeared on the BBC’s Later with Jools Holland, plus his live Hootenanny, New Year’s Eve show. In 2012, Faith released her second studio album Fall to Grace, which reached number two in the UK and has since been certified double platinum. The album produced her first top ten single ‘Picking Up the Pieces’, and the top twenty cover version of INXS’ ‘Never Tear Us Apart’, featured in the 2012 John Lewis advertising campaign. Faith’s third album, A Perfect Contradiction was released in 2014 and has become her most successful album to date. The album included the top ten singles ‘Can’t Rely on You’ and ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’. The latter became her highest-charting single in the UK. Faith has received four Brit Award nominations, and this year she scooped up the coveted British Female Solo Artist 2015, cementing her superstar status by placing her amongst the greatest female singers to emerge from the UK.
During her phenomenal Glastonbury Festival performance this summer, Paloma confirmed that she’d started the process of creating her fourth studio album. “Now we’re going to bring to your attention what I’ve been listening to a lot when making album number four,” she told the crowd, before wowing the audience with a thrilling cover of “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix. Last month it was announced that Paloma will be a coach in the fifth series of The Voice UK, replacing Rita Ora. This might well be her greatest challenge yet, and with her quirky Cockney accent, inimitable eccentric style, sex siren demeanor and dry humour, she’s guaranteed to keep her name in the headlines! Whether she’s delivering flippant insults or slipping up with blunders, we’re bound to take notice and, with her girlish charm and overwhelming charisma, we’ll be compelled to love and forgive her.

Well hello there and welcome to my little world! Expect a little silliness, a touch of controversy, a dash of humour, a splash of fun and a sprinkling of magic! This October I’m bringing you my take on what’s HOT and what’s NOT!
By Natalie Rose Kern
Breasts
HOT!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month – so I suppose I’d better talk about boobies. It’s a funny one I guess, ‘cause living in Marbella, where almost everyone has the perfectly pert and plastic variety, I’ve always longed for a pair of big bouncy ones of my own. Obviously, as a penniless poet, I’ve never had the funds for that kind of extravagance so I’ve just had to suck it up and dream about ‘them’. But, now that I’ve been offered cosmetic surgery for free (as long as I write about the procedure, of course!) I’ve found myself questioning my ‘dream boobies’ and instead I have come to embrace my imperfectly small, natural ones. And shouldn’t we all! Big, small, apple or pearshaped ones, we are all unique and beautiful and our imperfections and individuality is what makes us who we are – and surely it’s not the size or shape that matters, but that they are healthy! That WE are healthy!
Bullfighting
... rather than questioning or berating what Mother Nature has given us, perhaps we should be rejoicing in the fact that we are healthy, cancerfree and alive! An estimated 522,000 women died from breast cancer last year and there were almost 1.8 million new cases diagnosed worldwide. I have known and loved so many beautiful and brave women who have suffered through chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the humiliation of hair loss, the sickness and the exhaustion… some have made it, and sadly some have not. So I figure that rather than questioning what Mother Nature has given us, perhaps we should rejoice in the fact that we are healthy, cancer-free and alive! Embrace your perfectly imperfect womanly form and rejoice in your boobies…and for days when I’m feeling a little deflated (see what I did there!) there are always push-up bras!!!
NOT!
It’s controversial and provokes argument and upset whenever I bring it up and I’m sorry if I ruffle a few feathers - but that’s what I do!
Photos by Alex Nowicka Photography
I realise that some Spanish still feel very passionate and patriotic about it - but an increasing number of the population is turning its back on this once-respected, noble sport and many youngsters are even violently apposed to the practice. The excuses for not banning this barbaric and bloodthirsty sport are always the same – ‘tradition’, ‘heritage’, ‘culture’, ‘custom’ – but in some parts of the world, so is stoning, vaginal mutilation, amputation. It is only through education and information that archaic practices and customs are able to emerge from the darkness and move forward. Yes, Hemingway wrote extensively about bullfighting, describing it as “an art” (and I LOOOOOOVE Hemingway!) but surely we have become more ‘civilised’ since 1932 and there is no
What kind of perverse and sadistic people are we that we should continue to condone this merciless and brutal practice and call it “sport”. At the last bullfighting opinion bill only 29% of Spanish people were in support of this bloody spectacle. 22
longer any place in our culture for the deliberate torture and infliction of pain on animals for human pleasure. One day we will look back on bullfighting with the same horror and shame as with slavery. At the last bullfighting opinion poll only 29% of Spanish people were in support of this bloody spectacle. I may be an expat, British and American national but I am a proud Spanish resident. I delight in this country, the lifestyle, cuisine, culture and family traditions, but I see bullfighting – and all other blood sports that involve the torture and sacrifice of animals, as a stain on the nation.

HOT!
Ok, ok, this one may surprise you because it’s hot, but it’s not, which is a shame because I truly love El Chorro! Venture only forty minutes inland from Marbella and discover one of the most beautiful spots in Andalucía. From the giant lake with its turquoise waters, where you can swim, kayak or rent pedaloes for afternoon excursions with family and friends, to its rugged cliffs, its intrepid footbridge, stunning views and the enchanting landscape of the surrounding countryside, with its mountains and vallies – El Chorro has it all. Hotels and campsites, bungalows and bars, activities for children and adults alike… but it’s got people. In fact it has busloads of people. Now I know some of you might be muttering “Well of course it does, It’s one of the biggest attractions in Europe for rock climbers!” But you see, I hadn’t been to El Chorro since the Caminito del Rey walkway was reopened this spring. The King’s Path, which was built between 1901 and 1905 has been closed to the public for ten years and it was during this time that I first discovered El Chorro. I fell in love and it became one of my favourite spots in the world. I returned there this month and my heart fell as baseball capwearing tourists spilled out of enormous coaches. My paradise has been ruined… I can only remain thankful that I revelled in a few years of its enchantment before the dream was shattered.

Golden Lion Wilbur Smith Worldwide bestselling author, Wilbur Smith, will take you on an incredible journey over the thrashing seas off the coast of Africa in this glorious return to the series that made him who he is: The Courtney series. East African Coast, 1670. In a time of brave and brutal adventure, one man will journey across land and sea to pursue his greatest enemy… The Golden Bough, captained by Henry ‘Hal’ Courtney, is running south from Ethiopia to Zanzibar. Below deck, both his crew and his lover, the fearless warrior, Judith Nazet, sleep. As the moon glints through clouds, Hal sights a ship passing close by. Rogue Lawyer, John Grisham Publication date - 20th October “I’m not a typical lawyer. I don’t maintain a pretty office filled with mahogany and leather. I don’t belong to a big firm, prestigious or otherwise. I don’t do good works through the bar association. I’m a lone gunman, a rogue who fights bad systems and hates injustice . . .” Sebastian Rudd takes the cases no one else wants to take: the drug-addled punk accused of murdering two little girls; a crime lord on death row; a homeowner who shot at a SWAT team. Rudd believes that every person accused of a crime is entitled to a fair trial - even if he has to cheat to get one. He antagonises people from both sides of the law: his last office was firebombed, either by drug dealers or cops. He doesn’t know or care which. But things are about to get even more complicated for Sebastian. Arch Swanger is the prime suspect in the abduction and presumed murder of 21-year-old Jiliana Kemp, the daughter of the assistant chief of police. When Swanger asks Sebastian to represent him, he lets Sebastian in on a terrible secret . . . one that will threaten everything Sebastian holds dear. Gritty, witty, and impossible to put down, Rogue Lawyer is the master of the legal thriller at his very best.

warring English and Dutch, Hal scents danger. When the Bough is boarded, the crew must go hand to hand to defend their ship and their lives. But soon Hal will face even graver danger, as he discovers his mortal enemy still lives and is hell-bent on revenge. He must pursue his nemesis across desert savannah, through the seedy underbelly of Zanzibar’s slave markets and sharkinfested waters, imperilling his own life at every turn. But it will take more than a slave’s shackles to hold Hal Courtney… A thrilling blend of extraordinary drama and epic storytelling, Golden Lion sees Wilbur Smith return in triumphant form to the adventures of his beloved and bestselling Courtney family.
The Mountain Shadow Gregory David Roberts Publication date - 13th October Shantaram introduced millions of readers to a cast of unforgettable characters through Lin, an Australian fugitive, working as a passport forger for a branch of the Bombay mafia. In The Mountain Shadow, the longawaited sequel, Lin must find his way in a Bombay run by a different generation of mafia dons, playing by a different set of rules. It has been two years since the events in Shantaram, and since Lin lost two people he had come to love: his father figure, Khaderbhai, and his soul mate, Karla, married to a handsome Indian media tycoon. Lin returns from a smuggling trip to a city that seems to have changed too much, too soon. Many of his old friends are long gone, the new mafia leadership has become entangled in increasingly violent and dangerous intrigues, and a fabled holy man challenges everything that Lin thought he’d learned about love and life. But Lin can’t leave the Island City: Karla, and a fatal promise, won’t let him go.

You may wonder what the connection is between some rowers from Warwick and Marbella: the answer is that this year the university rowing team that has been stripping off for their Club since 2009 has used a stunning multimillion euro Marbella mansion, and the beaches at trendy Tarifa, as a backdrop for half of this year’s calendar. This is in no small part due to the calendar’s producer and photographer, Angus Malcolm, discovering the joys of Marbella and setting up home in La Mairena. Indeed, the owners of La Mairena graciously provided their fabulous mansion as a shoot location when they learnt the ‘naked rowers’ were coming to Marbella.
In previous years the calendar has been photographed around the University of Warwick Boat Club boathouse on the banks of the Avon. However, producer Angus and the guys are always looking for new scenery as a backdrop for their ripped physiques. After shooting the UK section of the calendar at an English stately home close to the university, “it seemed appropriate to partner it with a Marbella mansion” Angus told SOCIETY. And what did the rowers think of Marbella? Rower Alex praised the location: “Spain and Marbella adds so much in terms of stunning scenery to the calendar content as well as being an extremely enjoyable location for the guys to shoot in.” I think we can see from the photos that they certainly topped up their ‘all-over’ tans while they were here. At SOCIETY, we think their pose beside a Marbella infinity pool is one of the 2016 calendar’s most dramatic images. It’s likely the boys will return to Marbella, because as rower Lucas said, “It’s really cool and a lot of fun.”
CENSORED
The Warwick Rowers Calendar is now one of the most famous naked calendars: it has sales in 80 countries worldwide, and it has a growing celebrity following. Sir Ian McKellen launched the 2015 calendar, Stephen Fry is a staunch supporter and Kylie Minogue has a limited edition print on her wall. Last year, the boys went on tour in the U.S. and gained fans in both Kris Jenner (mother of the Kardashians) and Lisa Vanderpump of Housewives of Beverly Hills fame. The calendar has raised £300,000 for good causes, including £50,000 for Sport Allies, an organisation started by the rowers to challenge homophobia in sport.
28
The Warwick Rowers aim to make 2016 a record-breaking year for fund raising and they’d be thrilled if all you generous Marbellís helped them. As well as the calendars, the boys now have their own range of posters, T-shirts, art prints, hoodies, and greeting cards. This year they have also created a coffee table book of their best prints and a film is also available for download at www.warwickrowers.org for 19.99€.

T
he doggy residents of The Last Chance Animal Rescue near Málaga rely on the kindness of volunteers and donations for their survival. The LCAR works with the government dog pound to stop dogs from being needlessly euthanised, and it takes in dogs that have been abandoned and found in terrible states of physical distress. They have one aim: to rehome these animals. Every single cent of your donations helps them to save lives. They have passed the 2,000 adoptions mark, but the search continues for forever homes and foster carers.
down the usual route of using images of cute puppies, we asked some of the beautiful people of Marbella to pose quite provocatively with what I like to call a Mutt-i-gree, as the calendar features a variety of rescued pure and mixed-breed dogs, puppies and seniors of all shapes and sizes.” They also wanted to change the popular perception that the animal rescue industry is run by crazies. Kara explained, “The purpose of the series is to showcase rescue dogs and the amazing people who choose to adopt them in a different light, to fight the prejudices against these unwanted dogs.” She also pointed out that most of the local personalities posing in the calendar are with their own rescue dog Kara and her team would also like you to know that 100% of the funds raised from calendar sales are going to the Last Chance Animal Rescue. Jackson Grundy Real Estate donated the printing costs; Golden Tarts supplied hair and makeup, and other generous local sponsors ensured every cost was covered.
These beautiful animals often need more than food and shelter, many of them also need veterinary attention, and while the vets do their best to keep costs down, LCAR needs your help to pay the medical bills. Without donations, a beautiful girl like Charlene wouldn’t be alive today. Charlene is a Galgo and she’s just one year old. She was dumped in the pound with a broken leg, but thanks to LCAR she was taken to Curro, the vet in Torquebrada, who inserted a metal plate and grafted bone from her hip. Now she’s well and has a forever home with Ann Marie Payne, the amazing administrator of the LCAR team.
You can buy a calendar from: Golden Tarts in Puerto Banús & La Cala, Boardwalk Creperie in Ambrosia, Boardwalk Restaurant Marbella, Reflections Central Plaza, Sláinte Bar, Dynamic Gym, The Playwright in Elviria and Last Chance Animal Rescue on Facebook for only 10€
Many of us know about the terrible treatment of galgos here, and podencos are another lovely breed found abandoned in large numbers. Take the story of Angie, a podenco who was found huddled in a hole. She had terrible injuries, her skin was falling off and she had leishmaniasis, a parasitic infestation that is often fatal. But Angie has pulled through thanks to donations and she’s now living with Nuria Ramos, another LCAR administrator. Kara Robertson, manager of The Boardwalk restaurant, came up with the fundraising calendar idea and invited talented photographers Rebecca Louise and Gary Tapp, to join the project. Kara explained the concept to SOCIETY: “We wanted to create a charity calendar with a difference which would appeal to a wider audience, not just people who work or volunteer in the rescue industry,” explains Kara. “Instead of going

Elephants
BE
Elephants By Mark Bajerski
I
n the summer of 2015, my wife Suzie, our daughter China and I were so excited that our much dreamed about holiday – an 8-week trip to Thailand – was happening. Our adventures took us to Chiang Mai, visiting the most incredible and beautiful temples in this area. One day as we strolled around a river market, I realised that Suzie had strayed away from us. In the distance, I spotted what appeared to be a full-sized elephant. I knew instantly that Suzie, an avid animallover, would be in the same area. China and I headed over to join her. We spotted Suzie standing by the large creature and suddenly I felt my energy change. Streams of tears were pouring down Suzie’s face, utterly devastated by the sight that lay before her. Standing in a large metal cage, covered almost entirely in it’s own faeces, was a magnificent elephant. The animal’s eyes said it all. A vacant, broken expression as it continuously swayed it’s head from side to side, one of it’s legs pulled painfully tight to the bars of the cage by two heavy chains. The animal was suffering deeply from physical and emotional abuse. I felt desperate to release him and put an end to this disgraceful abuse and neglect, though if I tried, it was likely I’d be led straight into a Thai prison. I held Suzie tightly, trying to comfort her through my own feelings of utter shame. My late father’s words spoke to me:
30
“Mark, the most dangerous animal on earth is not the lion but Mankind.” What I
witnessed before me cemented those words in my heart forever. I promised Suzie we’d do everything possible to expose to the world this horrific abuse.
We’d read about the Elephant Nature Park, a sanctuary in Chiang Mai run by “Lek”, a beautiful lady dedicated to the rescue of abused elephants and other animals. We wanted to learn more and decided right away to volunteer at the sanctuary. On arrival our guide, Sunshine, welcomed us. His knowledge and commitment is immense. Sixty-one elephants currently live in this utopia and Sunshine recognises each by name, their personal story of slavery and how they came to be rescued. Sunshine explained about the barbaric practice of Spirit Breaking. Picture in your mind a narrow wooden pen, no bigger than a few feet wide. When an Elephant cow gives birth, her baby is soon taken away from her.
The baby is held captive inside the wooden pen, no room to move. For the following week the baby is tortured. It receives no food or water and is deliberately kept awake through constant beating with a foot long piece of wood, often with a large metal nail attached. Through weakness,
constant beatings and being screamed at, the young elephant eventually gives up. The spirit is broken. What begins is a life of slavery, desperation and grief working the streets of Thailand – away from its family, nothing more than a ‘play object’ for Thailand’s tourist trade. The shameful reality is, to learn tricks such as painting pictures or to ‘pose’ for photographs, an elephant is beaten repeatedly until it submits to carrying out these ridiculous performances.
Once an elephant grows to a size no longer permitted on the streets, they’re sold to the trekking camps and receive further abusive training. An elephant
Sunshine guided us to the river of the park to meet the herd of rescued elephants. We could not hold back our happiness and laughter, watching the elephants playing joyfully together, family in every sense. The younger ones playing ‘tag’ with some of the cheeky rescue dogs that live at the sanctuary. More tears were shed as Sunshine pointed to an elephant struggling to walk. He’d had a foot blown off by a landmine,a wound that would never have been dressed or allowed to heal, the suffering of the animal irrelevant to its keeper. And the 67-year old female who refused to work after a depression overcame her when her baby was snatched away. She was beaten across the face repeatedly until left blind. Though now rescued, each elephant carries deep and painful scars that will haunt him or her forever. Lek and her devoted team, however, provide as much love to the herd that their hearts and souls can carry. Volunteering alongside the team for a few short days has been one of my most humbling and healing experiences yet. The Elephant Nature Park expenses run up to about €250,000 euros annually. It’s overwhelming to consider how Lek manages to keep the sanctuary going and hope alive for the animals yet to be saved from a life of abuse and torture. Right now it is home to 61 elephants, 400 rescue dogs, 200 cats and over 100 water buffaloes.
story has no happy beginning, middle or end. An elephant trek is possible only through abuse and torturous ‘training’ of the very creature that carries you. Refuse to support elephant trekking, street or circus performances in Thailand and elsewhere. Support education on how elephants are enslaved into this unnatural life. They say that love can draw an elephant through a keyhole, let our love draw enslaved elephants through the keyhole to freedom.
I asked Sunshine what would help the enslaved elephants of Thailand? He answered simply, “Mark, tell the world to stop riding elephants.” Suzie, China and I made a promise to do all we can to share the reality behind every elephant trek in Thailand. The true

FREEZE AWAY STUBBORN FAT
D
WITHOUT ANY SURGERY!
espite working out rigorously and following a strict diet, many people find that they have areas of stubborn fat which are seemingly impossible to get rid of. The most effective treatment for this problem is generally considered to be liposuction, but for patients who do not wish to undergo surgery, Coolsculpting offers an amazing alternative.
Developed by scientists at Harvard University and bearing the FDA seal of approval, Coolsculpting involves freezing and eliminating unwanted fat with a unique, patented machine called Zeltiq. Cirumed Clinic is the only venue in Spain to have two of these exceptional Zeltiq machines. CIRUMED AND COOLSCULPTING Cirumed is a highly renowned aesthetic surgery clinic in Marbella, founded by Dr. Alexander Aslani, who is also Head of the Plastic, Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery of the Quiron Hospital, Marbella. ABOUT JEANNINE ASLANI At Cirumed, the Coolsculpting procedure is the ‘baby’ of Jeannine Aslani, a plastic surgery nurse and
beauty and wound specialist with over 15 years’ experience. She is a certified trained professional in Coolsculpting,, so we asked Jeannine some questions regarding this revolutionary technique… What is Coolsculpting? The Coolsculpting treatment involves freezing and eliminating fat cells without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue. It is the only FDA-approved non-surgical fat reduction treatment. Who is the ideal candidate for Coolsculpting? A man or woman who has stubborn fat in one particular area or who wishes to have body contouring done. Coolsculpting has no side effects and no downtime, plus you don’t need to wear compression garments or take any time off work. Is there an age limit for Coolsculpting? Coolsculpting can be applied to people aged 18 and above. Which parts of the body can Coolsculpting target? Practically all parts of the body. At the moment the only two areas which cannot be targeted are the ‘double chin’ and knees. But that’s on the way. What is so special about the Zeltiq Machine? The machine freezes fat cells in a unique way; instead of imparting cold to the desired area, it sucks heat out. What is a typical Coolsculpting treatment involve? Once a client has decided to go for
Coolsculpting, we photograph them and mark the areas to be treated. On the day of the procedure, we apply a fleecy cloth to the area and then place the applicators, which exert a sucking motion on the fatty tissue. No sedation is needed and the patient can choose to have a coffee, read, or make a phone call if they wish. What does the treatment feel like? Some patients say it is a little uncomfortable, but it is not painful. After the procedure, the treated area feels a little numb. There are no side-effects, but a tiny percentage of clients sometimes have slight bruising. How many sessions are required? There is a maximum of two sessions, though sometimes, only one session is required. If two sessions are required, the second session is performed one month after the first. How long do results take to show? Although unwanted fat is immediately frozen, the body takes around three months to completely eliminate it. After about a month, one begins to notice a change but after three months, the results are truly amazing. You can view images of real clients on the Coolsculpting website as well: coolsculpting.com. How is fat loss measured? We use the fat pinch test. How long do the effects last? Coolsculpting actually reduces the number of fat cells in the body. When we lose weight by dieting, although our fat cells become smaller, they remain in the body. Coolsculpting actually eliminates these cells for good. If you follow a healthy lifestyle, there is no reason why the results shouldn’t last a lifetime. How does the procedure compare pricewise to a liposuction? The price is a little lower, especially if just one session is needed. We have various packages that offer considerable savings. As our interview comes to a close, Jeannine speaks of her enthusiasm for beauty in all its aspects. “You only
have one body, one life… when it comes to health and safety, go for the best. As far as fat freezing is concerned, that means Zeltiq and Coolsculpting.”

reast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that invade surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it, too. To understand breast cancer, it helps to have some basic knowledge about the normal structure of the breasts, shown in the diagram below.
The female breast is made up mainly of lobules (milk-producing glands), ducts (tiny tubes that carry the milk from the lobules to the nipple), and stroma (fatty tissue and connective tissue surrounding the ducts and lobules, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels). Most breast cancers begin in the cells that line the ducts (ductal cancers). Some begin in the cells that line the lobules (lobular cancers), while a small number start in other tissues. It is important to understand the lymph (lymphatic) system of the breast because it is one way breast cancers can spread. This system has several parts. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped collections of immune system cells (cells
38
that are important in fighting infections) that are connected by lymphatic vessels. Lymphatic vessels are like small veins, except that they carry a clear fluid called lymph (instead of blood) away from the breast. Lymph contains tissue fluid and waste products, as well as immune system cells. Breast cancer cells can enter lymphatic vessels and begin to grow in lymph nodes. Most lymphatic vessels in the breast connect to lymph nodes under the arm
(axillary nodes). Some lymphatic vessels connect to lymph nodes inside the chest (internal mammary nodes) and either above or below the collarbone (supraclavicular or infraclavicular nodes). If the cancer cells have spread to lymph nodes, there is a higher chance that the cells could have also gotten into the bloodstream and spread (metastasized) to other sites in the body. The more lymph nodes with breast cancer cells, the more likely it is that the cancer may be found in other organs as well. Because of this, finding cancer in one or more lymph nodes often affects the treatment plan. Still, not all women with cancer cells in their lymph nodes develop metastases, and some women can have no cancer cells in their lymph nodes and later develop metastases.

However, as the cooler days and nights draw in, don´t be fooled into using your winter ‘cover up´ clothes as an excuse to discourage you from training and following a healthy nutritious diet. It is much easier and healthier for you to maintain an all year round exercise regime partnered with making the right healthy choices with your food and drinks, than to go crazy in January, with all the other ´New Years Resolutions’ gym goers, or in March before the summer kicks in and the onset of opening parties!

Living in Marbella where there are on average 320 sunny days a year and a fabulous microclimate, so we do actually spend much more time with our clothes off, well not all of them, but you get the picture! As a trainer and fitness coach here, I have noticed how this does affect the attitude compared to say the UK, which is where I previously lived. Females living here on the coast (of all ages) are much more body conscious, they really want to look their best with and without their clothes on. It really is much easier and considerably better for you, to make this an all year round project and in the next few months,
I am going to give you some TOP TIPS for helping you achieve this and stay motivated, even as the darker nights and mornings creep in. I am going to share with you some awesome ways to improve your daily habits. As something so simple as what you reach for and drink first thing in the morning will make a difference to your day, your month, your year and of course your life. Studies have shown that it will probably take you anywhere from two to eight months to build a new pattern of behaviour into your life. So please be patient with creating your new improved habits.
There are some great lifestyle changes that I recommend to my clients, which you can make, that are simple and very effective:
Adding more activity into your daily lifestyle • Park further away from the supermarket or your destination, so you are encouraged to walk. Ok I know you have probably heard this before. But, here in the Costa del Sol, so many people live in urbanisations far away from anything, so when they leave their home, even for essentials, they have to use their car. Is this you? If it is, you really need to make an extra effort to be ACTIVE!
• Why not meet up with your friends for a walk along the paseo and a catch up, rather than in a cafe?
Experts recommend 10,000 steps per day and there is a little gadget called a Fitbit (other brands available) that you can wear on your wrist and it monitors how active you are. These are genius and help keep you super motived.
• Always choose to take the stairs and try and climb 2 at a time or just at a faster pace.
• Always walk instead of using your car if you can.
42
• What about getting a dog? Then you will have to take them out frequently for walks. If you don´t want the commitment of your own dog, you can volunteer at the local shelters, as they ALWAYS need dog walkers.
• Walk or climb on escalators. Yes you heard me right, WHEN POSSIBLE, DON´T STAND STILL.
• When walking, go at a faster pace, rather than a slow leisurely stroll. • We have an abundance of amazing countryside here, mountains, caves, rivers and rock pools. Get out and explore the beautiful nature with your friends and family. There are also organised trips run by a variety of companies across the coast. Johanna Muyrhofer from Sur Walks offers a wide range of organised tours to help you explore Andalucía. For more information contact Johanna at: http://www.sur-walks.com

Make exercise part of your daily routine, like cleaning your teeth! Schedule it in your diary or on your calendar, so you actually see it and do it! If you find that after work, you really cannot be bothered to exercise, partake in an early morning workout. Yes it can be difficult to rise from a comfortable bed at 6 or 7 am, but once you are up you are up - which means you have the rest of the day ahead of you and you can start to get fully motivated and charged up. Morning workouts also help keep you focused on good nutrition habits, by starting the day as you mean to go on.
If you are not self-motivated, get an exercise buddy, then you will be accountable for each other and this is great for motivation and encouragement. If you need more motivation and direction, then group exercise classes might be the best choice for you. Or if you prefer the one to one approach, invest in a private trainer/coach to help you reach your goals and keep you accountable.

The C Word
Photo: Raphael Tecksten
Our resident health and nutrition expert has been a busy bee this month as she continues on her mission to change our eating habits.
As it’s breast cancer awareness month, our resident nutrition and health expert talks CANCER – how to try and prevent it, how to arrest it and hopefully how to survive it – by opting for a healthier diet and making small lifestyle changes that could save your life!
C
ancer is the big C word that so many of us dread to speak out loud - but that so many of us have experienced on a personal level whether it be ourselves, a loved one or an acquaintance. I am one of those who has had loved ones who have suffered and survived and are currently fighting to keep it under control. I have learnt that every person going through cancer has their own personal story and that no one can put themselves in their shoes.
As loved ones we can and should support, listen, love and most of all respect how they want to deal with the situation - remember that! There is, however, growing evidence to support diet and lifestyle’s massive impact on the disease and the huge health benefits of cutting meat, sugar as well as dairy products from one’s diet. “Vegetarian and vegan diets increase beneficial plant foods and plant constituents, eliminate the intake of red and processed meat, and aid in achieving and maintaining a healthy
weight. The direct and indirect evidence taken together suggests that vegetarian diets are a useful strategy for reducing risk of cancer.” – according to Cancer management and research. This basically means that by opting for a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle, you keep many inflammatory diseases at bay and/ or more manageable. To start with I thought I’d share some of my top tips on easy ways to eliminate toxins from your diet.

Cut out dairy and make your own milk.
Nut milk can be expensive to buy fresh and even the long life varieties in cartons and cans are expensive and often contain nasty additives and preservatives. Making your own is a far cheaper option. Coconut milk can be cheap to make and, of the nut and seed varieties, almond, cashew and sunflower seed are usually the most economical. Professor Plant’s radical message is that a diet that totally excludes dairy products – milk, cheese, butter and yoghurt – can be successfully used to help stop the disease “in its tracks”, by depriving cancer cells of the conditions they need to grow. “We have all been brought up with the idea that milk is good for you,” says Prof Plant. But there is evidence now that the growth factors and hormones it contains are not just risky for breast cancer, but also other hormone-related cancers of the prostate, testicles and ovary. With the relatively new science of epigenetics, scientists now understand that cancercausing genes may not become active unless particular conditions arise that switch them on – and if those conditions change, they may be switched off. “This means that what you eat can have an impact at the genetic level,” says Prof Plant.
Eat more veggies!
Eating more vegetables is not only good for your health - it’s also great for your wallet too. Look for in-season vegetables that will be cheaper and tastier than buying imported vegetables.
Buy seasonal, local and preferably organic!
We are so, so lucky to live in the garden of Europe. We are surrounded by amazing produce and growers who take great pride in their craft. Every weekend there is an organic market on the Costa del Sol. “Organic food has more of the antioxidant compounds linked to better health than regular food, and lower levels of toxic metals and pesticides” according to the most comprehensive scientific analysis to date. The team, led by Prof Carlo Leifert at Newcastle University, concludes that there are “statistically significant, meaningful” differences, with a range of antioxidants being “substantially higher” – between 19% and 69% – in organic food. It is the first study to demonstrate clear and wideranging differences between organic and conventional fruits, vegetables and cereals.
Cut out red meat and - go Beans!
Pulses are a great source of plant-based protein. Instead of using canned varieties I suggest you purchase dried beans and pulses. You’ll need to soak and cook them first, but the flavor is far superior, and you’ll end up with more, which will last longer. Turn them into a bean casserole, salad, soup, stew or bean dip or serve as side dishes to meals. I actually like to bulk boil two to three different varieties and freeze
Love WHERE I
in portion sizes so that I always have pulses at hand.
Cut out or decrease the use of refined sugar from your life! The efforts that food manufacturers go to in order to hide added sugar from you is downright disturbing!
Often they list different types of added sugars as the seventh, eighth, and ninth items on an ingredient list to fool you into thinking there’s not a significant amount of added sweeteners. The best thing you can do is to start consciously reading labels and if you can, try and eliminate refined sugar from your life altogether. Jamie Oliver has just come out with an eye-opening documentary called Sugar Rush – watch it! “I believe many cancer patients would have a major improvement in their outcome if they controlled the supply of cancer’s preferred fuel, glucose. By slowing the cancer’s growth, patients allow their immune systems and medical debulking therapies - chemotherapy, radiation and surgery to reduce the bulk of the tumor mass -- to catch up to the disease. Controlling one’s blood-glucose levels through diet, supplements, exercise, meditation and prescription drugs when necessary can be one of the most crucial components to a cancer recovery programme. The sound bite - sugar feeds cancer - is simple.” says leading nutritionist Patrick Quillin.
TO EAT
My most memorable healthy meal out this month was Dezentral’s Gluten free buckwheat waffles, topped off with avocado, beefy juicy tomatoes and a tasty pink beetroot hummus. As far as indulgent Saturday breakfasts go, this was definitely a winner! They also do great salads, juices, smoothies and killer coffee.
All of these habits can seem extreme and overwhelming at first so remember that you don’t have to do it all at once. If this article gives you a more consumer conscious mind when you go on your next shopping trip, then I’ll have done my job. If you want to learn more about how to swap your staples for healthier alternatives come to one of my workshops and I’ll teach you!

METHOD Blend nuts and water together in a blender until you start getting a milky texture. Use a sieve to separate the pulp from the milk. If you’re not a rookie use a nut milk bag, it is finer and will leave you with a silky smooth milk. Put milk back in the blender and add agave, salt, vanilla and coconut oil and give it another whizz. I like using a glass jar or bottle to store the milk it’s far better for you than using plastic and it will last longer in the fridge. What do you do with the pulp? I dehydrate mine to make almond flour, which I use in a cake or to make little chocolate energy bites covered in sesame seeds! You can make so many different milks don’t limit yourself to almonds. Hazelnut, sunflower and brazil nuts are all great options too.
ALMOND MILK Ingredients
* 1 part pre-soaked Almonds * 2 parts Water (I like my almond milk milky but if you want it more watery you can use 3 parts) * 1 tsp of Agave * 1 pinch of Salt (Himalayan) * 1 tsp of Coconut oil * Half a Vanilla pod (the leftover stalk I put in a jar of porridge oats or anything that can benefit from the delicious taste and smell of vanilla)

New Hair New Outlook
You might think that hair would be the last thing on the mind of someone with cancer, but contemplate this: chemotherapy makes you feel bad enough, without also having to face the horror of hair loss when you look in the mirror. Hair loss is a physical reminder of your diagnosis and this is why I feel it is important to address the issue of hair loss during breast cancer month.
What to expect As any chemo veteran knows, it isn’t easy being bald. Clients tell me that hair loss was one of the most difficult things to cope with during their chemotherapy treatment. Even health professionals will admit that when a woman is diagnosed, her first question is, “Am I going to die?” And often the second is, “Am I going to lose my hair?”
Hair loss usually occurs 2 - 3 weeks after the first chemotherapy session. The rate of loss depends on the individual and the strength of the treatment. Hair normally starts to grow back around 3 - 6 weeks after the last treatment and it may return completely different in texture, and even colour, from before. One of my clients had straight, fine blonde hair her whole
life, only for it to return thick, black and curly. Go figure! It can be a big shock to find your hair has changed, but I would strongly advise you to wait until at least 6 months after your treatment has finished before you think about colouring your hair.
A cut above the rest Hair on average grows about 1 inch every 6-8 weeks, but this depends on many factors such as diet or medication. If your hair doesn’t seem to be growing as quickly as you want it to, DO NOT STRESS. I know that is easy for me to say, but every cancer patient is different and their body responds differently to the trauma it has had to go through. You will get there, I promise, it may just take a little more time. As your hair starts to grow back, you can work your way through some fabu-licious styles. You and your stylist can have a great time, playing around with different looks. Start off with the pixie cut, a short textured look that Dame Judi Dench totally rocks. That woman just gets better with age. This style has been worn by some of the biggest, boldest, and bravest stars throughout history. Audrey Hepburn, Halle Berry and even Pamela Anderson (yes, really!).

Next, we move onto bobs. Any of my regular readers will know I LOVE LOVE LOVE a bob. Asymmetrical, blunt, tapered, you can just go on and on reinventing yourself with different versions of this style. Then, finally you will get to the length you had before the chemo. Hurrah!
Lotions and potions It is important to take more notice of the ingredients found in your hair products after chemo. The scalp can become incredibly sensitive and some products irritate the delicate skin. Use gentle shampoos and conditioners and avoid irritating ingredients like salicylic acid, menthol, camphor and eucalyptus. I highly recommend the Pureology range, as the 100% vegan formulas are sulphate and paraben free.
The psychological effect
Leave your hat on
I have spoken with many clients and colleagues, all of whom agree that it helps to remove your hair yourself rather than waiting for it to start falling out. The latter is so much more traumatic. If YOU decide to shave your hair it gives YOU THE POWER rather than the cancer. If this is too much for you then another option is to have it cut short. When your hair strands are shorter, it is less distressing to see when they fall out.
Wigs aren’t for everyone. For many women scarves and hats can make a big difference. If you prefer the latter, then make this your thing. You know what a head turner a fab hat can be. Splurge on the latest Philip Treacy creation, wear it with attitude and work it baby, work it.
Getting Wiggy with it
Final thoughts...
I know this is hard to do, but when it comes to wig shopping you need to try and look at the positive side. Get the girls together and shop till you drop. Always fancied having black vampy locks? Now’s the time to try it out. Want to shock everyone with a bright pink bob for the day? Knock yourself out. Use this time to experiment and jump into different characters. Remember when Samantha in Sex and the City started wearing outrageous wigs after her chemo? She was like a chameleon; one day she would be strutting her stuff in a chic blonde bob and the next she was embracing her inner rap star with a bright, fuchsia pink style. Now is the time to be whoever you want to be; the world is your oyster.
I want to leave you with something to think about: losing your hair can be symbolic of new beginnings—losing the old self and embracing the new. In some religious ceremonies shaving the head is a symbol of entering a new life. You may not be able to control everything that is happening to you, but you can control how you feel about your hair and yourself. I will never forget when one of my clients turned to me after I chopped off her locks and said, “The last thing I expected was to get a whole new look out of cancer.”
An alternative, which recently went viral, is the henna crown. I love that these intricate, temporary head tattoo designs empower the patient and shows that bald really is beautiful.
Before After NANOKERATIN SYSTEM Our client, Fiona Weeks, straight hair returned thick and curly after chemo. Stylist Paul MacFarlane performed the Nanokeratin System service on Fiona’s hair and the end result was nothing short of amazing. The revolutionary Nanokeratin System uses nanomolecular Cashmere Keratin particles to redefine the natural state of your hair and create an enduring blow-dry that lasts up to 12 weeks. So what did Fiona think about the final result? “I am bloody delighted!!! Thanks to you all.”

PRETTY
in Pink
For Breast Cancer Awareness month, I wanted to shine light on some very special product brands that aren’t only amazing on your face and body, but have an involvement in cancer charities all over the world as well. These brands have dedicated themselves to supporting this amazing cause, by releasing special Breast Cancer Awareness products and donating a percentage of their sales to the charity. These products are just a few of my favourites due to their commitment to helping others.
3 2.Life is never perfect… but your nails can be!
OPI are donating €22.300 from the sales of their beautiful pale pink shimmery polish ‘Pink Of Hearts’ (which costs €8) - which was created exclusively for Susan G. Komen (The Cure) - and is the only organisation that addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives in order to make the biggest impact against the disease.

1.Blow a kiss
Estee Lauder will donate €450,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation from the sales that they make through the Pink Ribbon Collection - a trio of lipsticks in a stunning pink clutch, carefully selected by Evelyn Lauder, one of the creators and popularisers of the ‘pink ribbon’ as a symbol of breast cancer awareness.
3.When in doubt, blend it out!
Beauty Blender is giving 10% of all of its sales to Cancer Support Community for the WHOLE month of October! Beauty blenders are a game changer when it comes to contouring, and everyone should have one in their make-up kit even more so now that your money will be going to a good cause!
4
4.Bat those lashes
Revitalash is a product that I have been using on myself for a while now and I was so glad to find out that they too are having an involvement in Breast Cancer Awareness month. They have brought out a limited edition pink packaged Revitalash (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a bit of pink packaging!) A portion of all sales will go to breast cancer research initiatives. I’ve heard a lot of positive reviews about this product and I can definitely see an improvement in the condition of my lashes since I started using it. It’s a bit of an investment but totally worth it when you see the difference it makes and some of the money you’re spending is going towards research that could potentially save lives.

PINK
TO MAKE THE BOYS
Wink! by Jess Milles
As it’s breast cancer awareness month, I’ve decided to do a makeup look that’s completely devoted to PINK! The products I’ve used for this look are completely paraben free as we all know they do nothing good for your skin or body. I find it really important to search for products that aren’t only about the longevity and how they look, but more about the quality of the ingredients and how they actually benefit your skin. This style is perfect for every day or you can spice things up a bit and add more glitter and glamour for a night out or a date! Don’t be afraid to experiment with colours that are a little out of your comfort zone when doing your makeup. Pink is one of those colours that will look amazing on anyone if you pick the right shade for your skin tone. I’m not suggesting we bring back the 80s and whack a neon pink all over the lid, but a warm, soft pink looks super pretty! When using brighter colours, the trick is in the blending. Here I’ve used a mix of shimmery neutral beiges on the inner corner of the eye and then layered the same colours over a deeper more purple-toned pink. This can be a bit risky, as purple shades can look slightly like a bruise if not applied neatly! A great tip for achieving a neat finish with eyeshadow is to stick a small piece of body tape to the corner of your eye at an angle - and then gently remove once you’ve finished. This acts as a barrier for the pigments and keeps the shape neat and tidy. If you don’t want to go for such a sharp look then you can blend it along the line to soften it. If you’re quite fair, don’t forget to layer those lashes with mascara as it really opens the eye and gives it a border.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with colours that are a little out of your comfort zone when doing your make-up.
The “Too Faced ‘Cat Eyes’ palette” is a great one to purchase to ease yourself into using pink shadows. Its a bit of an investment at €32.00 but totally worth it as they are super pigmented and completely paraben free.

UPCOMING
TRENDS for Autumn 2015
BOHO'S BACK
The boho vibe has gone more folksy this time. The case of early ‘70s nostalgia gives a mix of vibrant boho looks. This season’s key piece? The poncho.
1970s VIBES
Autumn 2015 brings big proportions of the retro and bohemian feel of this particular fashion era, letting us enjoy our suedes and flared designs for yet another season.
CAPE TOWN
Opt for classic cape silhouettes or ones that create an optical style illusion that makes you ask the question: Is that cape a dress? Are those faux sleeves?
WAIST MANAGEMENT
A cinched waist is a clear must for silhouettes, and the best way to get one is with a corseted belt. The oversized accessory is an effortless way to show off curves with looser pieces.
FRINGE BENEFITS
The simple technique gives skirts a sexy skin-baring effect, ups the ante on eveningwear, and adds textural intrigue to already-cozy knits.
FUZZY COLLAR
Furry finishes have their place nearly every Fall. Whether in faux fur or shearling, the statement-making trim adds volume to the simplest of sheaths.
TIMELESS BLACK
It is a timeless color that will never go out of style and its shadowy self makes for a slimming illusion. The black and white combinations have been a constant trend on runways.
SWEET SUEDE
Suede is another beautiful material that reminds us of the 1970s, making us utterly nostalgic since appearing everywhere in the Spring/Summer collections.

This Season’s MUST HAVES
Animal prints are big for the fall/winter season in general, but it is the leopard that most designers opt to emulate on their coats and their dresses, like the amazing pieces shown from SENA, handmade, 100% silk and exclusive prints.
The accessories become a must have to create unique outfits, like the necklaces, earrings and ponchos shown throughout our looks from Like A Queen. All the pieces are hand crafted with high quality finishes.

Natalie Rose Kern meets up with Ewelina Swider and Anthony Laurence at the stunning Trocadero Arena beach club and restaurant to discuss their fashion brand, Aviator, their upcoming fashion show and their plans for the future…
E
welina Swider is a fashion designer and an engineer from Poland. A surprising combination perhaps, but this young socialite is savvy, switched on and streetwise. She has combined her creative flair with her quick wit and smart business acumen to create and run the Aviator 1909 brand. Her business partner, Englishborn Anthony, has an ownership interest in a number of international companies. His evident passion for fashion and knowledge of the clothing business is perhaps to be expected, as he comes from a family of bespoke tailors. The two met whilst Ewelina was making dresses for a television personality in Gibraltar. Anthony asked Ewelina to make a dress for his girlfriend and from then on they worked together on ideas for a possible fashion company. Within no time, they hit it off and formed a sensational partnership and a trip to Paris saw the Aviator 1990 brand taking shape. Together, the pair set out to create a fashion company that was luxurious and elegant, producing pieces that were exquisitely made, beautifully tailored and durable. Ewelina had a classic Morgan sports car and wanted to create clothing that would be suitable to wear whilst driving it. She began designing jackets, hats, scarves and gloves to wear with the roof down, as well as strong, stylish and durable pieces of luggage for weekends away, daytrips and holidays. “Where and when did you launch the company?” I ask the creative couple. “Following our second trip to Paris,” they tell me, “approximately 18 months ago.” I’m surprised. Aviator 1909 has all the style and sophistication of a longstanding and well-established brand that has been around for decades; it has a timeless elegance that sets it apart from other new fashion labels that keep popping up.
62
“Our main objectives were to introduce quality and originality to the fashion market,” Anthony tells me. “We visited manufacturers in seven countries and rejected the Far East as

it involves too many ethical dilemmas. We chose Poland because the people are hard-working and still practice all of the old-fashioned methods of tailoring and dressmaking. Indeed, Poland is enjoying a renaissance in the clothing world.” I’ve heard of Poland’s growing popularity in the clothes manufacturing world and mention another of our clients who designs elegant evening dresses in there. “That’s one of my best friends!” smiles Ewelina. “Poland is really taking off in the fashion industry!” With so much choice and variety out there I wonder how they chose their manufacturer or factory, “’Factory’ really is the wrong word. We spent months visiting almost every small, skilled manufacturer in Poland choosing from those who had a track record of manufacturing for international names.” I wonder how they selected their fabrics and where they sourced them from, “Once again it was research and personal visits. For the clothing we decided to use a fabric that had been used in the 1960s and was luxuriously soft.
We sourced it from Italy, where it is produced and treated,” Ewelina explains. “So…” I begin, “which one of you designs the pieces?” “Both of us” they reply in unison. “With Ewelina in the lead,” adds Anthony. They both giggle and I can see that they make a formidable team. “Why Marbella?” I ponder. “Sunshine, happiness and comprehensive variety of tastes.” We all laugh. That is an excellent summary of Marbella. “A comprehensive variety of tastes,” I repeat, “you can say that again… So what kind of clients do you have?” The pair think for a while… “Our clients come from all over Europe – in particular Sweden, Denmark, France and the UK - as well, of course, as the Costa del Sol. We have even delivered products to the USA. We would characterise all of our clients as happy people.”Happy people! I like that. “So, what kind of woman wears Aviator?” I ask them.
“A confident woman of any age from 16 to 65!” is their response. We go on to discuss plans for the future, which can’t be revealed just yet. But we can say that the fashionable duo are going to be introducing some spectacular new designs, which are already on the drawing board, as well as expanding their activities to the Dubai market. I want to know a little about Aviator’s upcoming fashion show as SOCIETY has been invited and it promises to be a memorable affair. “The fashion show in May 2016 will be a deliberately spectacular extravaganza, attended by high net worth individuals, local company directors and celebrities, and with some of the most beautiful models and clothing.” It sounds fantastic! We can’t wait to be in the audience and watch the unveiling of the much-anticipated Aviator Spring/Summer collection.

s BMW’s flagship model, the 7-Series carries the heavy responsibility of not only setting the technology bar in its class, but the driving dynamics one too. The engineers have done their job well, and where the previous model gave best to the Mercedes S-Class in ride quality, the new 7-Series has now closed that gap. With more power and a weight saving of around 130kg the new car is faster and more agile than its predecessor. Importantly, as it is a limousine, overall refinement and ride quality are also noticeably improved. To confirm that VIPs will have no complaints I spent half the time in the rear seat, which is comfortably spacious in the standard car, and impressively roomy in the LWB version, which has 140mm more length in its rear compartment. All our SWB test cars had the optional electric rear seats, which made the journey even more comfortable. However, the Executive Lounge Seating option in the LWB car offers the ultimate restful experience. Normally, you have to press and hold a button to move such a seat to its fully reclined position. BMW thoughtfully provide a more convenient one-touch arrangement, and it is possible to halt the process in intermediate positions. And when the front passenger seat reaches the end of its forward journey,

the big video screen then realigns its viewing angle to the vertical. As customers have different requirements, permutations of two individual rear seats or a normal threeseat arrangement without the rear centre console are there for the asking. The move to remote control for rear seat occupants of either wheelbase models sees a neat solution in the form of a Samsung tablet with BMW software that allows access to all the cars systems from the audio system to heating and rear seat massage functions. While Harman Kardon continues to provide the entry-level audio system in the new 7-Series, Bowers & Wilkins has replaced Bang & Olufsen as BMW’s topof-the-range audio alternative. With a real high-end domestic audio manufacturer in play at last, the 16-speaker, 1,400 watt B&W Diamond system’s tonal balance is natural and musical rather than hi-fi spectacular. The one caveat is that it sounds better in front than in the rear due to the limitations of the passive crossovers used in the system, which are unable to correct the time delays between the tweeters and mid-range units. Thus, the system is far more musical than the B&O that went before but has the potential to be even better. I blame the cost accountants for this. it clear that the outstanding ride and handling of this car will make it a strong contender for the top spot in its class. The concept of a ‘soft’ ride is often been mistaken for a ‘comfortable’ one. However, the true secret of a comfortable ride is a supple secondary ride tempered by good body control, with progressively firmer damping and lower roll angles as speed rises. Basically, occupants should not feel seasick or be jolted at any speed. The best way to cope with these diverse requirements is with air springs and adaptive damping, as used on the outgoing F01 7-Series. BMW has now taken this to the next level, extending the performance envelope at both ends of the spectrum using an improved air suspension with standard Dynamic Damper Control. In addition, the optional Integral Active Steering that steers the rear wheels by up to three-degrees, also incorporates the

first use of electro-mechanically driven Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation. This new system now features a variable rack and pinion system that allows the use of xDrive four-wheel-drive with the IAS system. The Driving Experience Control has Comfort, Sport, ECO Pro and Adaptive modes, the latter responding to driver style and route characteristics influenced by information from the GPS sat-nav system. The feeling of wafting along is discernably improved in the Comfort+ setting, a subsetting of the Comfort mode. In this case, the attention paid to minimising friction in the air suspension valves, along with other refinements means that the system reacts swiftly and smoothly to very small road surface imperfections. At the same time, the computers keep control of body movement so that the heave and yaw moments commonly generated in softly set conventional systems are minimised.
You feel the benefits straight away. The worst of the road imperfections are absorbed, the cars body staying nice and level as the active damping keeps everything in check. Perfectly judged steering and the rearwheel steering make the new 7-Series feel subjectively smaller and lighter than it really is, while the suspension retains a level of suppleness in Sport mode that ensures the ride never comes close to being uncomfortable. So full marks to the chassis engineers for a job well done. While the ever pressing demands to make cars lighter and more efficient on the one hand, and yet stronger and more crash worthy on the other, manufacturers have to become increasingly more innovative with both familiar and new materials, and their applications. While the next generation 7-Series bodyshell benefits from the incorporation of some carbon-fibre structural components, unlike the i3 and i8, whose complete inner structure is made from this material, the new 7-Series only uses carbon-fibre in a reinforcing role, removing weight and adding strength in critical areas. The same is true for their application of high strength steel and aluminium. A low centre of gravity is always good for handling. However, comfort aids like a sunroof, especially a glass one, put a lot of weight high up in a cars structure. At the same time, good rollover protection means more weight in the roof support structure.
92
TORQUE TALK
Using carbon-fibre tubes bonded inside the roof rails kills these two birds with one stone, removing significant weight from high up in the structure, while also increasing the rollover strength. The carbon-fibre tubes are not hollow, but have a honeycomb structure inside that varies in profile and thickness along the way to maximise its strength in particular areas where loads are greatest. The side sills contain hollow carbon-fibre structures that torsionally stiffen this area of the car, as well as enhancing its side impact protection. Carbon-fibre is also used in a very different way in three other areas of the car where it is formed into thin sheets and bonded to the steel, creating lighter and stronger structural members. The first of these is the B-pillar moulding, where CFRP is bonded to the inside of the pressed steel panel, adding to its torsional stiffness and crash resistance. A thin, shaped CFRP panel is affixed to the lower C-pillar with the same targets in mind. Last but not least are the large CFRP panels that reinforce the cabin side of the steel transmission tunnel, which can thus be made of thinner steel.
You feel the benefits straight away. The worst of the road imperfections are absorbed, the cars body staying nice and level as the active damping keeps everything in check. So why not just make the tunnel from CFRP in the first place? The reason is acoustic performance. CFRP does not filter out road noise as well as steel, so if the tunnel were made purely from CFRP, you would have to add so much bulky sound insulation material that you would lose the weight advantage of using CFRP in the first place. Speaking of acoustic insulation, a new technique of wrapping the engine closely in insulating material muffles its sound at source, also saving weight compared to having to use more insulation around the engine bay further from the power unit. Another advantage is heat retention so that the catalyst lights off faster to gain lower emissions from a cold start. The use of all these advanced materials has helped BMW to reduce the weight of the stiffer body-in-white of the next generation F02 7-Series by 40kg.
The total saving is 200kg including that 40kg, but because the new car has an extra 70kg of safety and convenience features, the actual saving compared to the current F01 version is 130kg model-for-model. There are a lot of new electronic functions in the plush cabin. The engineers told us that many customers prefer touch screens, so the new iDrive system will offer this for the very first time as an alternative means of choosing functions along with the familiar iDrive control wheel. One of the pioneering technologies is the 3D sensor for the BMW gesture control. This uses a camera in the headlining above the centre-console to pick up one of four finger movements a driver or passenger can use to alter the volume of the audio system or take or reject an incoming phone call.
93
TORQUE TALK
If you want to increase the volume, you make a clockwise winding motion with your index finger, or anti-clockwise to reduce it. To accept an incoming call, you simply point straight ahead. Rejecting a call requires a horizontal wave of the hand from left to right, a motion that some will no doubt find satisfying when refusing to take a call from someone recently removed from their Christmas card list! Driver aids come in the form of new features added to the Driving Assistant Plus with steering and directional control assistant, as well as Lane Departure Warning Assistant and with active side collision protection. BMW also demonstrated their Remote Parking feature that allows the driver to exit the car and park, or indeed, un-park it in a narrow space or garage where it would be difficult to open the doors. This function is controlled from the larger than normal electronic key fob known as the BMW Display Key. A safety over-ride, like a dead man’s switch, means if you drop the key accidentally, the car will stop immediately. It also uses the parking sensors to detect someone suddenly walking in front of or behind the car, and will apply the brakes as hard as necessary to prevent an accident. When the new 7-Series goes on sale in December it is clear that the 730d will be the most popular model in the UK and Europe, while the 750i V8 will take centre stage in the US and Middle East.
94
In other petrol markets like Japan and Asia, the 3.0 litre six-cylinder 740i, which has 326hp and 450Nm of torque, will be the mainstay model. I drove a pre-production 740i three months ago, and while it is not as torque rich as the diesel, it is rapid enough for most people. With 265hp and 620Nm of torque, the 3.0 litre six-cylinder 730d has smooth and rapid acceleration. It is a restful drivers’ car, with an extremely comfortable and serene rear seat ride as well. At 140km/h on a light throttle cruise the engine is as inaudible as in the V8-powered 750L xDrive. While its 6.1 sec 0-100km/h time is merely brisk compared to the 4.5 sec of the V8, the huge wave of torque coupled to supreme refinement and aerodynamics also makes it is easy to reach three figure speeds without much effort. The optional Integral Active Steering (rear-wheel-steering) is available on both rear and xDrive (4WD) versions, but the maximum handling benefits are felt with both systems working together. BMW say that an increasing number of their customers are taking up the xDrive option even in countries without heavy winters as they recognise the safety and traction benefits on wet roads. Importantly, xDrive will be available on RHD models. The LWB 750i xDrive I drove was equipped with both systems, which proved their worth on the twisty hill roads above Porto where the IAS helped it turn in and track
round tight bends with a smaller radius and greater feeling of agility than would otherwise be possible. IAS has significant benefits when parking and manoeuvring at low speeds, and with a steering ratio perfect for the chassis turn-in rate, threading this big car along the twisty roads felt perfectly intuitive. The 450hp and 650Nm of torque generated by the silky smooth 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8’s is seamlessly transferred to the tarmac via the eight-speed automatic and xDrive. Even full throttle out of tight bends never provoked a hint of any wheel slip. I struggled to find negatives and eventually came up with just two. Wind noise around the drivers’ exterior mirror becomes obvious on the motorway at certain oblique wind angles, but not otherwise. Tyre noise on some road surfaces was also more apparent than I would have liked on the optional 19-inch wheels with Pirelli tyres worn by our test cars. The base wheel size is 18-inch with 19, 20 and 21-inch wheels as options. The chassis dynamics, power and refinement of the new 7-Series impressed greatly, and whether or not you need this level of on-board electronic aids, it is comforting to know that BMW has once again raised its game in this very competitive luxury segment. hen Marika and Jan Niclasen moved from Denmark to Marbella in 2009, the property market in Spain was suffering one of its worse crises on record; sales were stagnant, house prices were plummeting dramatically, estate agencies up and down the coast were shutting up shop and the market was in a dire state. As home owners were handing the keys to their properties back to the banks, the Niclasens saw that there was a gap in the market that demanded to be met – why not list some of these stunning villas and apartments that were sitting on the market, with little chance of sale, for short-term rentals to holidaymakers and tourists, in order to gain a revenue on the properties? Marika runs a tight ship and she has built up a strong level of trust with all of her clients.
“It can be a delicate psychological game to play at times,” explains Marika, “You can so easily offend or upset someone if you are not careful.” She adds with evident glee, “We have some truly beautiful properties on our books and this year has been our busiest season yet.” As the property market gains momentum and España Holiday continues to grow, the couple has opened up offices in both El Rosario and Nueva Andalucia and, whilst Marika concentrates on the busy rental department, Jan has turned his focus to the once again blossoming sales market. “So many of our clients have come for a week’s holiday and have been so thrilled with the properties and the area that they have been asking to purchase the villa or apartment that they were staying in.” explains Jan, “so we developed Real Pensions; that’s our retail office.” “You would be surprised how many of our holidaymaking clients fall in love with Marbella whilst on holiday,” reveals Jan. “But perhaps it’s not that surprising,” he adds, “there’s the weather, the relaxed lifestyle, the beaches and the Spanish culture”.
As well as satisfying holidaymakers eager to purchase a slice of real estate on the sunshine coast, the Niclasens are also able to ensure that homeowners can sell their property as well as rent it out. Marissa explains, “It’s the ideal situation. The homeowner does not have to worry or suffer any inconvenience as we can take care of everything. From cleaning and maintenance to viewings and offers.” “Another fantastic benefit of this solution, is that we are able to provide buyers with a yearly income for the property, which is a great advantage when applying for mortgages,” declares Marika. “We are always looking for new properties for our ever-expanding listings – especially high-end apartments and villas in beachfront locations,” Lars tells us. With a dynamic international team of Danish, French, Dutch, English and Spanish-speaking agents, España Holiday and Real Pensions are satisfying home owners and holiday makers alike. Why we love
Transitional Style
By Hayley Reed, Founder of Foc Design

HOME HOME COUTURE COUTURE
At FOC Design, we are not quick to stick with a category. We love the ‘eclecticity’ of working with a range of interior design styles and we believe in experimenting with the many ways in which we can blur the boundaries between the schools of thought. However, if you were looking for one genre that sums up the FOC style, then we’d have to say that it is what is known in the interior design world as Transitional Style.

HOME COUTURE
I
t’s very 21st century and designers of the calibre of Nina Petronzio, with her Plush Home shop on Melrose Place in LA is a leading advocate of the style - so is FOC. So what is Transitional? Houzz’s contributor, Lisa Frederick´s explanation always brings a smile to my face; “If Goldilocks was decorating a house, transitional style would check all of her “just right” boxes: not too cold, not too formal, not too fussy.” It blends the comfort and warmth of traditional design with the clean profiles and understated colours of the
contemporary look. It is often described as the updated classic design style, blending traditional and contemporary styles to create a timeless ambience. This combination of style features results in gracious, streamlined spaces that radiate harmony. It really is the interior decoration style that has its cake and eats it! The appeal lies in having the best of both worlds: you aren’t straying too far from the familiar, but you have the freedom to freshen it as you see fit. And because you can update it indefinitely to reflect current trends, it ages well.
Although transitional usually denotes a balance between contemporary and traditional, that’s not always the case. You can mix in a few pieces from other styles as long as they don’t detract from the casual, tailored setting. The preferred furniture lines are simple and unfussy yet sophisticated, and tend to blend straight lines with rounded profiles; this is something that is very much associated with the Transitional style. Fabrics are often unexpectedly diverse and you are likely to find a bold graphic pattern covering, a large, opulent sofa, or

sensual, textured chenille combined with sleek wood frames. In terms of its palette, the Transitional style veers towards the muted tones that are often associated with Scandinavian designers. This lack of brash colours creates a clean, serene atmosphere. Expect to find teal, aquamarines and grays, with creams, pewters, wheatmeal and off-whites. Indeed, muted greens and blues that make you think of northern seascapes are very much a central part of the colour palette that designers working in this genre turn to.
114
Texture is also important and a room design may feature a multitude of fabric selections that can range from durable materials to sophisticated, plush fabrics. They will often have tone-on-tone shades, or small-scale graphics.
a streamlined Philippe Starck look, although you may find elements of his famous style among the touches that bring a room to life. Instead, Transitional aims to create a blend of style ‘notes’ where carefully selected feature pieces soften the décor and add that homely touch.
Ultimately, an interior designer working in this style is seeking a balanced mix of several textures to create the ‘transition’ between classic and contemporary.
It’s an approach that allows you to put an ultra-modern piece in the same space as a centuries old family heirloom.
The Transitional style is not over complicated with clutter, but neither is it minimalist. Don’t expect
However, you could say that a minimalist approach is taken in that the accessories are carefully selected

and rarely overdone: a potted orchid gracefully arching in front of a window; white mats that set off photographs in simple black and silver frames and an oval wooden tray that provides a resting spot for similarly shaped silver candleholders. As for the furniture, curves combine with straight lines in a Transitional style interior. The look balances both masculine and feminine attributes for a comfortably, contemporary feel. The scale of the pieces is adequate for the space, but not too large to be intimidating. The watchwords for furniture choice with this style are ‘comfortable and uncomplicated.’ The large furniture pieces are not overly designed, but rather made using good quality raw materials combined in such a way that the traditional layering of basic elements is complemented by the luxurious mix of fabrics: aged woods, honed marble and herringbone floors are just some examples of finishes that work well in a transient style. Overall, simplicity and sophistication is the key to unlocking the Transitional style, and imbuing homes with these values is the goal of every FOC design project.

n the Czartoryski Museum in Cracow the browsing British tourist is suddenly confronted by a British army sabre, surrendered by Major General Lord Blayney to the Polish Captain Franciszek Mlokosiewicz at Sohail Castle in Fuengirola in 1810. Whilst his lordship played down the debacle in his memoirs, he remained in French captivity for four years, and his defeat remains one of the few encountered by British forces during the course of what the British call “The Peninsular War” and the Spanish “The War of Independence”. It also has a slightly farcical element which is sometimes lacking in a bloody encounter. Fuengirola, whatever its nature today, was once a highly important trading town. For this reason the Moors built an impressive castle on the banks of the Fuengirola river to defend the area. When the French under Marshal Soult invaded Portugal in 1809, only to be beaten back by Wellesley (later Lord Wellington) at Oporto in May, Andalusia, then the richest province in Spain, was regarded as being of secondary military importance. The usurping French King Joseph, however, was perennially short of money. He cast his eyes on the riches south of the Sierra Morena, and persuaded Soult to invade, despite a lack of approval from Napoleon. Joseph made the mistake of concentrating his attack on Sevilla rather the important port of Cádiz, where a French naval squadron lay at the mercy of the Spanish. The Duke of Cadore had advocated the closing of European ports to the British, and had warned Napoleon of the importance of Cádiz. Sevilla surrendered and the Junta fled. Cádiz, meanwhile fortified itself and withstood a siege lasting two years, tying down a French army of 70,000 men which could have been put to better use elsewhere in the peninsula. The French used some of the largest artillery pieces of the time in the siege, including the Grand Mortars, which could hurl projectiles to a distance of three miles. At the conclusion of the war the Spanish presented one of these mortars to Britain in honour of the Duke
of Wellington, and it found itself erected in Saint James’s Park, close to the Duke’s residence at Apsley House.
As Blayney led his force towards Fuengirola, the small fleet sailed alongside.
With the French concentrating their efforts on Cádiz, the Spanish army constantly harried their forces. The ousted legitimate Governor of Málaga, General Theodor von Reding, together with General Francisco Castaños, inflicted a crushing defeat on the French at Bailén, in Jaén province, with 17,600 surrendering at a cost of fewer than a thousand Spanish casualties. This was the first major defeat of the Grande Armée, and inspired the Fifth Coalition against France. Meanwhile a ragged army under General Ballesteros kept the French busy elsewhere in Andalusia. The French army, however, included troops from the Duchy of Warsaw (now Poland).
Upon arrival before Sohail, Blayney sent a demand for surrender. Mlokosiewicz refused, and the frigates opened fire. The Poles had only two light guns, but in returning fire Sergeant Zakrzewski managed to sink one of the gunboats. The fleet withdrew beyond range, and as the frigates continued to bombard, Blayney launched a frontal attack.
In October 1810 a hundred and fifty Poles from the 4th Infantry Regiment and eleven French dragoons were sent to garrison the port of Fuengirola, and occupied the castle of Sohail under Captain Mlokosiewicz. Sixty infantrymen under Lieutenant Eustachy Chelmicki occupied Mijas, and two hundred infantrymen and forty dragoons under Major Bronisz based themselves at Alhaurin de la Torre. They were under the overall command of General Horace Sébastiani in Málaga.
One of their purposes was to prevent Spanish partisans being supplied from Gibraltar. They were largely successful and so In Gibraltar itself Major General Lord Blayney decided to attack Málaga to assist the Spanish. He was assured by them that a landing at Fuengirola was an easy option. He pieced together a force consisting of the 2/89th Regiment of foot, the Spanish Toledo Regiment, some deserters from the French army, and an artillery unit with a naval gun crew; some seventeen hundred men.
It embarked on two frigates, HMS Topaze and HMS Sparrowhawk, five gunboats, and several brigs and sloops. On October 14th the little army landed at Cala Moral bay.
The commander of the 2/89th Regiment, Major Grant, was killed and Blayney retreated. Overnight, he landed guns from the frigates, built emplacements, and trained them on the walls. With the British thus busy, Lieutenant Chelmicki and the garrison of Mijas, alarmed by the gunfire, sneaked through the British lines and joined the defenders. Unaware of this, Blayney despatched a Spanish-German unit to Mijas, where it was routed by a bayonet charge by the garrison of Alhaurin , which had also been alerted by the gunfire, and which had hurried to Mijas. At the castle the British guns destroyed one of the towers, and reinforcements in the shape of the 1/82nd Regiment of Foot arrived aboard HMS Rodney and a similar Spanish warship. To counter the increased threat Captain Mlokosiewicz led a sally, leaving the wounded to defend the castle. Despite the odds of ten to one, the Spanish defending the gun emplacements fled, and the Poles turned the guns on the British. With no trained artillery men, the Polish fire was largely ineffectual, but it nevertheless took Blayney half an hour to regroup and attack the Polish positions. In the face of overwhelming odds, the defenders blew up the powder supplies and retreated into the castle. At this point Major Bronisz arrived and attacked the British left flank. Seeing this, Mlokosiewicz turned and fell on the British right flank. Thirty French cavalry from the 21st Dragoon Regiment, also arriving from Mijas, settled the matter. Blayney was captured, and as the British and Spanish retreated they again came under fire from their own guns. By the time Sébastiani arrived from Málaga, all was over and Blayney was marched off into captivity (during which he learned French) minus his sabre.

It’s also an ideal venue for a get-together with friends and, if you simply want to make your evening sparkle with a few glasses of champagne or cava, then you’ll find some of the very best at the market’s Wine Gallery, which is a superb vinotheque for wine lovers. You’ll also find some prosecco: the ‘must have’ drink of 2015.

For drivers, your arrival at Ambrosia is made easier by parking attendants who show you to a space. It adds a sense of grandeur and occasion to your visit as you walk up the central flight of steps that lead into the cool, tiled and greenery-filled interior. It feels light and airy, and there’s a strong sense that whichever of the ‘puestos’ you visit, you will meet experts who love the products they sell and know them inside out. With 11 stalls and a cocktail bar to choose from, it can be quite challenging to select a place to start. So, perhaps a virtual guide, starting at the front entrance, might help to orientate you.

STALLS As you walk through the entrance you’ll spot a row of gleaming copper beer casks over the Estrella Galicia Bodega, which offers a truly tasty artisan beer. There’s a substantial indoor seating area in front of the bodega’s bar area, which will no doubt start to fill as the weather turns colder. For the moment, customers still opt for the lovely outdoor terrace that, in the evening, has a welcome breeze after the still hot end of summer days. On your left as you face the bodega bar is stall No. 6 IBERI&Co, purveyors of ham, cold meats and cheese. It isn’t easy to stand out in the Spanish ham market, since it is the nation’s main product and competition is tough, so when you see a sign that says “The Best Ham in the World” you know you are going to have a superlative ‘jamón’ experience. The ham in question is Joselito, and the Joselito Gran Reserva is available at IBERI&Co, which is a rare treat for ham aficionados. The selection of cheeses is mouth-watering, and if there are any persons who think that British cheese is boring and bland, then try the spicy Cheddar with sultanas. Order a selection to accompany a bottle of wine on the terrace: the staff will advise you on the types of cheese to accompany the wine you have chosen.

delicatessen offering pork, chicken and lamb products, including a variety of sausages and taster dishes. You can choose cuts of Charolais, Aliste, Frisona, Simmental, and the renowned Aberdeen Black Angus from Uruguay, or succulent Galician ox, not to mention the delicious Tomahwk chop and, of course, Wagyu Kobe Japanese black beef. It’s an impressive assortment, and you can either take the meat home, or have it cooked on the spot. Stall No.10 The Wine Gallery offers Cava, Prosecco, Champagne, Sangría, Vermouth, Brandy, Fino, Amontillado, white, red, rosé or sweet wine all kept in a climatised wine cellar that provides the best conservation conditions for each one. Enjoy wines by the glass, although it is usually better value to buy a bottle and the selection is quite stunning. Stall No. 11 Isan Thai/Sushi will delight fans of Asian food. On the one hand, you can order fresh and subtle tasting Sushi and on the other, the flavoursome and spicy dishes of the Thai cuisine. It’s a sufficiently varied menu that represents both traditions and sitting at the bar you have the pleasure of watching the chef at work as well. Then you are at Stall No.1 Delicious Gourmet Croquettes and More. Croquettes are another staple of Spanish tapas bars, but there are very few that offer dozens of different fillings. Here you can have ‘rabo de toro’ or a ‘Foie with caramelised apple’ or ‘cuttlefish in its ink, as well as the traditional favourites, such as Serrano ham croquette. Vegetarian options are also available. Next door, Stall No. 2 IN PASTA will give you a pasta dish that would delight an Italian mother. They produce both fresh pasta and dry semolina, with original sauce recipes from their homeland: pesto Genovese, ragú Bolognese, amatriciana, setas porcini, and season the dishes with

freshly cut basil, or intense shavings of Parmigiano Reggiano. The Golden Prawn, which is Stall No.3, has a mountain of fresh prawns just waiting to be devoured. The quality of the seafood at this counter is exceptional and the presentation and hygiene standards give you confidence in all the seafood products on offer, In addition to king prawns there is squid, red mullet, oysters and other fresh catch of the day. Ambrosia already has achieved a reputation as a brilliant place for breakfast and where better to start than at Stall No.4 The Boardwalk Creperie. There are almost 30 different options available on the menu, both sweet and savoury. From bacon, salmon, spinach, fresh tomatoes, pesto or cheddar cheese to whipped cream, strawberries and banana with nuts, there is something for everyone at this stall. Plus there are milk shakes, brownies and a host of other delicious treats. If you need glutenfree products, then they cater for you, too. And, now you are back at the entrance and Stall No. 5 EGGSquisito. Omelettes are the specialty here and you can try three succulent varieties of freshly-made Spanish omelet: the classic type, made with potato and eggs; a sweeter one that is made with a special recipe using a bit of onion and lastly, an omelette with peppers and chistorra (a type of chorizo), which is ideal for customers who want to try out some intense Spanish flavours.
And that is Ambrosia. But wait; there is also a cocktail bar upstairs where you can enjoy a range of classic and modern cocktails. It’s the perfect place to end your workday and begin your evening: sipping a Martini or Manhattan while the sounds of Ambrosia float up from below.
WHAT’S ON AT AMBROSIA Not only can you eat whatever you want and enjoy the market’s charming ambience and surroundings, but there are all kinds of brilliant events on throughout each month so that you can either be entertained amused or enthralled by any number of activities or spectacles that the team organise to offer clients entertainment as well as phenomenal produce. This month, the SOCIETY team was invited to an incredible wine tasting event, where we sampled some of the finest wines, each accompanied by a delicious plate of food and all to the sounds of a flamenco guitar. The fabulous evening took place upstairs in an intimate soiree that consisted of live music, great food and unforgettable wines. We were also lucky enough to witness a masterclass in ham cutting. Joselito’s world-renowned ham is one of the best in Spain and one of Joselito’s experts was present to give a demonstration that was both skilled and entertaining - and of course we were delighted to be able to sample some of the delicious produce after it had been cut!

s a young man growing up in Argentina, José always had big dreams and plans for his life. He knew he wanted to make something of himself. He dreamt of success and was determined to work hard to achieve his ambitions. From a young age, José always had a passion for food and for cooking. His grandfather was a chef and he spent his boyhood days in the kitchen with him, watching and learning. Observing his grandfather’s slight of hand, tips and tricks as he whipped up beautiful, tasty dishes. Never one to shy away from hard work, Jose started at the bottom and worked his way up. He was a kitchen cleaner in a restaurant “But the chef there was lazy.” He tells me, “One day he asked me to cook him a burger and as I was making it I remember thinking ‘Yes, this is it. This is what I am meant to do!’ - and my cooking career began there.” He saw this window of opportunity and rather than cleaning, he began cooking, developing his talents as he went. After a few years he went to cooking school so that he could learn all he could in order to fulfil his ambitions. When he was at school he asked where in Europe had the best restaurants and someone told him “Puerto Banus, en España!” He was determined that one day he’d get there… so he finished cookery school and set off for Europe and for Marbella. It was here that he met his wife, Katrin, with whom he now owns a small restaurant empire, consisting of Momo, Lima and recently opened Sutton, which is where I’ve come to meet him to chat about food and the future. “I didn’t fall in love with Marbella immediately,” he tells me, “I worked for years at Beckitts and I learnt a lot but I was restless, I wanted to see more kitchens to expand my knowledge and grow, so I decided to travel! I voyaged extensively around Europe and especially Asia, where learnt so much from their flavours and spices and I’ve been so inspired by the food of my travels. I love being innovative and artistic with combinations, mixing new tastes and textures, colours and flavours…

Tapas Reviewed by Natalie Rose Kern Phottos by Julia Roder

hen I was pregnant (over eight years ago now!) I had overwhelming food cravings for Thai food! Hot spicy soups, stir-fries and curries; that was what I fancied each and every day. In order to satisfy these pregnancy cravings we visited every Thai eatery in Marbella (as well as up and down the coast) and nowhere surpassed the exquisite Thai kitchen at Ocean Club. Now, this is long before Ocean Club became the champagne-spraying, TOWIE-tastic mecca of tattoos, muscles and bikini-clad babes that it is today. In those days it was a family-friendly beach club with an Asian-inspired menu and the masterful Top headed its phenomenal Thai kitchen. We went for lunch every day and I don’t believe there was a dish on the menu that I didn’t try. Of course, Ocean Club was soon to be taken over by new management. That brought a complete overhaul of style and ambience; and out went the Thai kitchen and Top. I was broken-hearted, but determined to find a new Thai local. I decided to try out a tiny, newly-opened pop-up local in Centro Plaza and, to my surprise, I glanced up from my menu and saw Top’s top hat bobbing away in the kitchen, and under the hat his beaming smile met mine.
130
I was thrilled. Not only was my favourite menu still available, prepared by my favourite chef, but it was his very own place. By now, of course, the food cravings had been replaced by a small bundle in a pushchair by my side and both Top and his wife, Rudi, came over to greet us and to coo at my little monkey. Over the coming years Top Thai has remained a favourite spot for a bite of lunch, a TV takeaway or for an evening meal with friends and family and, as time went by, my monkey and Top’s little boy played together on scooters and bikes and became great playmates. One evening though, as we headed to our favourite little corner of the plaza, we were aghast to find the Top Thai family gone and the restaurant had been replaced by another. “Where’s Top? And Rudi?” I asked the new proprietors in dismay. “Just along the plaza” they told me, “They have a restaurant now!” We wandered a few shops up and there, to my wonder and joy, was a brand, spanking new restaurant with a meticulous interior, polished wooden tables, glass-fronted kitchen and Rudi standing proudly behind the bar. They’d made it. All of their hard work and unrelenting determination over the years had paid off and they finally had a big, beautiful restaurant of their own. I was thrilled for them and waved through the glass
at Top, who was whizzing around at lightening speed with pots and pans. The menu was completely unchanged and the quality was as good as ever – if not better! They’d expanded, yes, but their attention to detail, from the presentation of the dishes to the spotless décor and the faultless staff, meant that Top Thai retained its excellence and is a superb restaurant. I prayed that they could maintain this large establishment, as Marbella is renowned for its seasonal nature; here today, gone tomorrow. The staggering rents, the unreliable staff, the countless difficulties in running a business in Spain… would they be able to stand the test of time? Almost three years on and I am delighted to report that Top Thai is not only still standing, but they are busy. Really busy. So I was only too delighted when I was asked to try out their ‘Thai Tapas’ menu. “We want people to know that they don’t have to come in for a large meal or for heavy hearty curries,” Rudi explained to me. “We want people to be able to enjoy a tapas style experience, with lots of small dishes, different flavours, different textures in small quantities that you can share around the table with family and friends,” she expanded enthusiastically.

The rest of the SOCIETY team is only too pleased to join me, so we saunter up to Top Thai from our Banús-based office at lunchtime and seat ourselves around our usual table (yes, we are regulars and Rudi has, of course, reserved our favourite spot for us!) As usual, the majority of tables are already taken, despite it being Monday lunchtime, and the bustling terrace is a hive of activity. We order drinks and peoplewatch for a while. The food begins to arrive and my eyes light up. Platters, trays and dishes, piled high with fried deliciousness, tiny delicacies and colourful creations. Rudi brings me a selection of vibrantly coloured sauces and carefully describes each one to me; sweet chilli for the spring rolls, spicy chilli for the fresh Vietnamese rolls, Top’s speciality peanut sauce, much like a satay but with his secret ingredients for the chicken and beef skewers, plum, chilli, garlic, hot, sweet and spicy sauce. I’m trying my hardest to remember which sauces goes with which dish, but as I return my gaze to my greedy bunch of workmates in order to explain them, they’re already tucking in wholeheartedly, spoons and plates passing over the table, prawn toasts, wontons and skewers dipped and plunged into sauces at random, so my attempted explanations were futile. Exclamations of “yummy”, “deeeelicious!”, “try this, try this one!” and “who wants one of these fishcakes?” are emanating around the table as we sample each ‘Thai tapa’ and deliver our verdict. The spring rolls are hot and crispy and deliciously fragrant, there are gyoza that are light and full of flavour, crispy wontons and fried prawns. Then there are Thai prawn & fishcakes and prawn toasts. We pass a bamboo box of pancakes about the table and smear a Thai variety of plum sauce on them and fill them with cucumber, onion and crispy duck. The remainder of the meal is much the same as we chat, devouring the tasty morsels with full mouths and gleaming eyes. Everything is delicious and the meal is faultless - but I wouldn’t expect anything less from this hardworking family and their passionate team. We glance at our watches and concede that we’ve been out of the office for a little too long on deadline week, and bid a farewell to the team. “See you all next week!” Rudi tells us, but with deadlines day upon us and our favourite take-away spot only a stone’s throw from the office, we know we’ll be seeing her before then! hateaubriand, perhaps one of the most classic meat dishes in the world, is not as some people consider a cut of meat, it is a way of cooking a thick cut of beef tenderloin commonly seared on the outside and rare on the inside. The dish was reportedly created for Francois René Vicomte de Chateaubriand who was born in France and grew up in Normandy in the late 18th century. He was a French statesman and writer and is considered the father of French Romanticism. The dish is traditionally served with Béarnaise sauce and accompanied by Chateau Potatoes. For a perfect wine pairing, European connoisseurs ask for Old World wines, including French Pomerola and Margaux, or and Italian Barolo or Brunello. At D-Wine we encourage gourmets to set sail to the beloved “New World” and try the best of both worlds, selecting an intriguing Cabernet Sauvignon from United States, a charming Malbec from Argentina, or a wonderful Shiraz from Australia, all fuller in body and with bolder fruit flavours than their European counterparts to marry perfectly with the “Old World” Chateaubriand! OPTIMISE YOUR

Introducing the Tourbillon Private Client Service
T
ourbillon Private Client division offers wealthy individuals the opportunity to make their finances fund the lifestyle that they want and protects their wealth for the future. The financial professionals at Tourbillon are very aware that in a world where economic change is ever evolving, safeguarding and preserving wealth becomes more demanding. As a consequence, Tourbillon Limited has recently launched its private client division to provide bespoke solutions that range from private banking services, reviews of QROP/Pension arrangements through to asset management. Tourbillon Limited was founded on the basis that the service from banks and financial institutions for wealthy individuals and families is at best floundering. Mark Crossley (Founder and Managing Director) wanted to redress the balance and bring back an old fashioned approach. To achieve this, Tourbillon’s professional advisors only have a limited number of client relationships: it’s the opposite of the hundreds of clients that relationship managers have to service in a typical bank.
Mark Crossley explains: “During my career I have been astonished by the way that banks and other financial institutions only worry about new business,” which means, as he goes on to say, “the servicing and retention of existing customers ends up being an afterthought.” In this scenario, clients often miss out on investment opportunities because the service is not proactive, some clients (in some cases) aren’t even offered the chance to review their fund portfolios. Plus, staff change frequently these days: it is a stark contrast to the era when you knew your bank manager’s first name and may have even played a round of golf with him/her. Now you are an account number and your loyalty counts for little. Tourbillon aims to change this in a manner where clients get to know the staff; while still benefiting from access to all the standard services offered by the large banks i.e. debit/credit cards, standing orders and more. In addition to this, Tourbillon Limited specialises in providing private banking services whilst also ensuring preservation and growth of clients’ wealth. As
Mark Crossley points out “stability and comfort comes from indepth understanding of the client’s history, dynamics and aims and this can only be achieved through progressive dialogue on a regular basis.” The essential goal with each client is to build a strong relationship that allows its expert advisors to fully appreciate the most compelling needs driving their investment objectives, so that they can get on with optimizing their lifestyle. Tourbillon Limited is the ultimate safe haven for financial management based on a philosophy of “Wealth preservation and performance, driven through dynamic and pragmatic decision-making”. It’s a great place for independent advice and solutions in Spain and Gibraltar. Tourbillon Limited.
