PUBLISHER’S LETTER
It can’t be October, can it? The temperatures are still pretty good and the parties don’t seem to have slowed down much either. Just think – another six weeks or so and we’ll have all the Christmas bashes to look forward to! Not that we’re allowing the thought of that to distract us this month. We’re leading with Rihanna, who is not only one of the most popular musical artists of the 21st century so far, but an astute businesswoman. She has just launched a huge new range of make-up under the name Fenty Beauty and it has proved a strong seller. The brand’s USP is its bold focus on all skin tones, from white right through to black and she has single-handedly shattered the theory that brown and black women won’t buy make-up because it’s the darker shades that have sold out quickly. What with her music sales and a new beauty empire looking good straight out of the blocks I’d say that she’s the person to go to if you’re looking for a loan. I know that it looks like we’re a psychic bunch but we honestly had no idea about the storm that was about hit Uber’s London operation when our Eleanor McKenzie volunteered to take a look at the taxi services available in various parts of the world. With London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, being accused of collusion with the drivers of traditional black cabs it’s interesting to read a seasoned traveller’s take on the pluses and pitfalls of taxis worldwide. October is also the month in which the Man Booker Prize is awarded and this year the winner will be announced at a lavish dinner on Tuesday the 17th at London’s famous Guildhall. If your attention to the current bestsellers you will buy at the airport to accompany you on holiday then you will probably have missed all the excitement that accompanied the announcement of the shortlist. This year it looks as though the judging panel is being accused of jettisoning established names in favour of new authors who haven’t and ponders some of the memorable moments of this frequently controversial literary prize. There are some fanatical supporters of Rafa Nadal around here and not without reason. After a career that has recently been plagued by injury few would have predicted that 2017 would be kind to the man from Manacor, yet a triumphant performance at the US Open means that he is within spitting distance of Roger Federer’s record. With Andy Murray nursing a hip injury and possibly scheduled for surgery sometime soon it could be a very interesting 2018 for tennis fans, especially those who enjoy watching Federer and Nadal, those two big beasts of the circuit, knocking seven bells out of each other. Marbella often grabs the lion’s share of attention when the Costa del Sol is mentioned but Estepona is a charming little town and its Golden Mile also has plenty to offer in terms of leisure facilities and hot property. This month we are very happy to feature one of the most exciting real estate projects that has been built in the area for some time. Darya Estepona features 36 apartments with differing layouts and all built to the highest standards. If you’re looking for a luxurious lifestyle in a frontline location consider. Apart from this Ian Kuah test drives the brand new Mercedes S63-AMG, our pet expert George Gough offers some tips about managing separation anxiety (is that aimed at the pet or the owner, I wonder?) and we visit Sotogrande about its enduring link with polo, the sport of kings.

R I H A N N A Making Up is Hard to Do?
If there is one female singer who can rival Beyonce’s reputation as the Diva of Divas then it is surely Rihanna. The Barbadian singer/songwriter is not yet 30 years old but has already released eight studio albums, two compilation albums, two remix albums and a staggering 68 singles.
The Fenty Beauty range has already received glowing reviews from experts in the field, who predict that Rihanna’s products will be a huge hit because they were created with black and brown skin tones in mind. “White skin has been treated as the standard for so long in the US and Europe that only recently have the big makeup labels seriously begun As if this wasn’t enough she has also developing products specifically for branched out into acting, with parts black and brown women,” stated digital in several movies, including an magazine Joy105.com. Rihanna default white. This is not a signed a deal with LVMH to create new dilemma at all, as much as a complete cosmetics collection it is a constant cycle of exclusion and which launched on September the 8th and is available exclusively via the popular cosmetic store, Sephora. Fenty Beauty (employing Rihanna’s surname) encompasses a range of 91 products, all of which have been designed specifically to suit all skin types and tones. The foundation alone encompasses 40 different foundation shades (one of the widest spreads in the industry) and 30 Match Stix skinsticks to correct, conceal and create an T attractive shimmer. There is also a OU D blotting powder, plus a range of other L SO beauty accessories.

expected inefficacy with occasional outliers,” she wrote. Sephora has already reported that the darker shades are already proving the most popular, with branches all over America selling out fast, which is great news for the international beauty market, as it looks beyond pale female clientele to embrace a more diverse customer base. “The next wave of growth is expected to emerge from extending solutions to consumers of all other ethnicities,” researchers Euromonitor stated last year in a report on the international beauty industry. Yet again, it looks as though Rihanna has made a smart career move. Her first album, Music of the Sun, produced the international hit single, ‘Pon de Replay’, the video of which showed Rihanna as a small, sassy figure in jeans and a sparkling crop top who might have had the dance moves and the attitude that would not only persuade the DJ to “turn the music up” but also propel her to stardom. However, compared to her later, ultra-glam image, she was still very much a work in progress. Later projects would take her down a darker road as she ‘upgraded’ her image to conform to the world of R&B. The comparative innocence and

When the first single from this latest album was revealed to be ‘Russian Roulette’ press interest went from intense to rabid. Nobody could deny the strength of the singer’s vocal performance but the subject matter raised more than a few eyebrows, as it related the story of a fearful woman seemingly forced to participate in a game of Russian roulette by an abusive partner. More speculation of Rihanna’s addiction to the toxic relationship with Chris Brown resurfaced in 2012, when it was rumoured that the pair had reunited, although Brown revealed in 2013 that their relationship was over In the meantime, while Brown’s career seemed to be treading water, Rihanna went from success to success as she hit the top of the charts both as a solo performer and as part of several clever collaborations with David Guetta (‘We Found Love’ and ‘Right Now’), Coldplay (‘Princess of China’), Kanye

cheerful dance-pop vibe of Music of the Sun and its successor, A Girl like Me, was replaced in 2007 by Good Girl Gone Bad’s unsubtle sexuality. Ironically this album would deliver Rihanna’s biggest hit in the shape of ‘Umbrella’, a catchy and positive tribute to the power of friendship, which would scarcely have raised a blush from a maiden aunt. Released in 2009, Rated R provided the soundtrack for a disturbing part of Rihanna’s life. Not only was her image verging ever closer to an X-rating but her relationship with rapper Chris Brown was hitting the headlines as often as he appeared to be hitting her. Despite pressure to speak out against domestic violence and dump Brown, Rihanna seemed disinclined. After she appeared in public with visible injuries she seemed more concerned with invasion of her privacy than the fact that she appeared to be living with a man who communicated by the medium of fists.

West and Paul McCartney (‘FourFiveSeconds’) and Drake (‘Work’), with whom she also had a brief relationship. After finding continued success with Loud, Talk That Talk and Unapologetic, the singer released her eighth studio album, Anti in January 2016. The cover featured a striking artwork which took as its basis a monochrome photo of a young Rihanna on her first day at day care, holding a black balloon, her eyes covered by a golden crown. The album’s look was completed by a splash of red and a braille poem, ‘If They Let Us’, written by Chloe Mitchell:
“ I sometimes fear that I am misunderstood.
It is simply because what I want to say, what I need to say, won’t be heard. Heard in a way I so rightfully deserve. What I choose to say is of so much substance That people just won’t understand the depth of my message. So my voice is not my weakness, It is the opposite of what others are afraid of. My voice is my suit and armor, My shield, and all that I am. I will comfortably breath in it, until I find the moment to be silent. I live loudly in my mind, so many hours of the day. The world is pin drop sound compared to the boom That thumps and bumps against the walls of my cranium. I live it and love it and despise it and I am entrapped in it. So being misunderstood, I am not offended by the gesture, but honored. If they let us...
”
Rihanna’s voice continues to be her “suit and armour”, both musically and as a prominent woman of colour. Not only has she used her voice to attract attention to her own talents, she is now employing her influence to improve the lives of women all over the world. The prevailing attitude of the cosmetics industry, for too long, has been that it is pointless to produce items for black and brown women because they will not sell. The fact that the darker items in the Fenty Beauty range have sold out so quickly proves that there is a huge, hungry market out there, one which Rihanna and her team of make-up experts are well placed to serve. If she continues her current trajectory, Rihanna could become one of the 21st century’s most successful music artists and a new Elizabeth Arden or Helena Rubinstein, to boot.

AND FIRST STARTED GOING OUT, I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE THE OPPOSITE OF EVERYONE ELSE. SO I WOULD GO TO THE CLUB IN A POLO T-SHIRT AND PANTS AND SNEAKERS AND A HAT ON BACKWARD, JUST SO I WOULD NOT BE DRESSED LIKE OTHER GIRLS. ”

Sam is No Sellout
Few singer-songwriters have managed to gain such a high profile on the strength of one album but, with a staggering four Grammy Awards for his 2014 debut, In the Lonely Hour, Sam Smith’s eagerly awaited second album looks set to be the bestseller of late 2017/early 2018. He already has a Number One success with the first release from album number two in the shape of ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’ and could be forgiven for cashing in on his success by selling his cast-off songs to other artists. This is common practice in the music business and many songwriters are very happy to accept the extra cash for the work that they have put in – but this is not something that Smith would ever contemplate. Interviewed by Australian radio station, KIIS FM he said, “I dunno, I don’t really like giving my songs to other people, it’s just not for me. Maybe just because my songs, like all the other others, are just s***.” Those Grammy Awards say not, Sam – stop being so modest!
Paloma…F A T ?!
One thing that we especially like about Paloma Faith (apart from her eminently achievable ‘bargain bin at the charity shop’ style) is the fact that she can give as good as she gets. However, even she had to admit that the quest to be the perfect Earth Mother defeated her last August, when she gave birth to her first child with partner Leyman Lahcine. Interviewed on ITV’s The Jonathan Ross Show she admitted: “I said ‘I’m going

Cougars We Like
Well, good for Halle Berry! After enduring several years of a love life that has been troubled to say the least (Olivier Martinez, anyone?) 51-year-old Halle decided to break the news of her relationship with British music producer, Alex da Kid who, at the age of 35, is 16 years younger. Despite having two children (a daughter from her relationship with Gabriel Aubry and a son from her marriage to Martinez) and entering an age-group in which it often becomes difficult for even the most popular actresses to find work, Halle is looking fantastic. Being a cougar must agree with her.

Gallaghers at War: The Next Generation
At times the war of words between Noel and “Our Kid”, his bratty younger brother Liam, has threatened to eclipse their music careers. The endless fighting certainly contributed to the death of Oasis and now it seems that the battle between both sides of the Gallagher family is being continued by their children. It was recently reported that Gene, Liam’s 16 year-old son from his marriage to All Saints singer, Nicole Appleton, had accused Noel’s 17 year-old daughter Anais from his marriage to Meg Matthews, as looking like Noel in a blonde wig. If, like Anais, you are trying to develop a career in modelling, this is not exactly what you were hoping to hear. To make things even more fraught, Gene accused his cousin of mixing only with a crowd of North London celebrity offspring that includes Jude Law and Sadie Frost’s son Rafferty and Brooklyn Beckham, scion of David and Victoria. In fact, let’s take a look at Gene’s tweets in full, shall we? “Firstly u look like ur dad w a blonde wig on. Secondly, u model coz of who u are nobody care about who u are lmao.” Clearly Gene has also inherited his father’s verbal dexterity.
Always Crashing in the Same Car
to do hypnobirthing, no drugs…’ and then everything that could go wrong went wrong and I had all the drugs imaginable and 20 hours of labour and an emergency Caesarean and a premature baby.” Admitting to a new admiration for multi-child families (“When you meet other people whose relationships are still going strong after multiple children, they deserve medals, it’s amazing”) she admitted that toning her post-baby body
took some time. “One day I went for an appointment and the nurse said to me, ‘You look like a chubbier Paloma Faith’ and I was like, ‘People say that a lot’.” The cheek of it!
I don’t know what it is about that old Bowie track but it perfectly sums up the recent news about Aaron Carter. What is it about the term ‘teen idol’ and the adjective ‘troubled’ that seem to go together like fish and chips? Years ago we had David Cassidy’s battles with the bottle and even Donny Osmond teamed up with Billy Idol for wild nights out to prove that he wasn’t quite the good Mormon boy of legend. It’s been a traumatic time for Aaron, whose big brother Nick is one-fifth of the Backstreet Boys, as he recently lost his father, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, experienced an HIV scare and admitted that, at the tender age of 29, he has already developed an addiction to cosmetic surgery and an unhealthy reliance on painkillers. He has also recently written off his car and received three home visits from the police in 24 hours after trying to obtain a gun. In the middle of all this personal angst and chaos, the fact that he has ‘come out’ as bisexual is really neither here nor there. Let’s hope that Aaron regains his equilibrium very soon.

Over the summer it has been extremely busy bringing its audience an upclose view of Europe’s best events, and here are some of the highlights...

The Vulgar Fashion Redefined This was an amazing exhibition showcasing the ways in which fashion ideas have changed over time. Professor Judith Clark of the London School of Fashion and her partner Adam Phillips, a psychoanalyst, curated the exhibition. It first showed at London’s Barbican before it moved, in stark contrast, to the famous Belvedere Museum in Vienna, showing against a backdrop of baroque tapestry instead of the Barbican’s postmodern venue. TAH-DAH.TV filmed it there, and now it is at the Modemuseum Hasselt in Belgium.

We also discovered Marbella’s latest artistic resident – the Belgian industrial designer and conceptual artist, Dirk Vermeire. TAH-DAH.TV managed to get a world exclusive interview with him before he launched his brand new collection of absolutely wicked ‘Calavera’ skull chairs for POLART at Maison& Objet in Paris.
Global Gift Gala Staying in southern Spain (where else in summer?) we filmed the annual Global Gift Gala, and got some great interviews with its founder Maria Bravo and Eva Longoria, plus designer Melissa Odabash as well as model Vogue Williams and ‘Made in Chelsea’ personality Spencer Matthews.
Spanish Women,s Polo Challenge And then it was off to the famous Santa Maria Polo Club in Sotogrande to watch the ladies playing polo at this prestigious event. We were impressed by the standard of play, by the winners La Quinta, and by the fact that the winning team’s patron, Kate McKinney is only 20.

Elrow Town London Back in London, one of the craziest parties of the summer was Elrow Town London at the Olympic Park on 19th and 20th August. Around 25,000 people attended over the two days and it showcased Spanish rave party experts at their best. They entertained the crowd with over 200 actors, streamers, confetti, fire bombs and... a camel on wheels!

You can also watch interviews with the world No.1, Adolfo Cambiaso, and the world No.3, Juan Martin Nero. These are available on the Sports-Events section.
Talking to The Jackmaster We were given an exclusive interview with this DJ who played Glastonbury in front of about 40.000 people. He had a residence at DC-10 in Ibiza this summer and is a regular at Sonar in Barcelona. We caught him before he played Bestival in September and THE dance event of the autumn: ADE in October in Amsterdam, when the feature will be out! Smegheads everywhere will rejoice at the news that Lister (Craig Charles), Rimmer (Chris Barrie), Kryten (Robert Llewellyn) and Cat (Danny John-Jules) are back for another series of sci-fi mayhem and nonsense. Writers Doug Naylor and Rob Grant felt that Red Dwarf, a much loved and deceptively clever sitcom with a sizeable fan base, never received the respect that it deserved on BBC2 and now it seems to have found its natural home on Dave. Featuring a mixture of mild slapstick and clever dialogue, this galactic comedy never fails to deliver on the laughs and that alone is reason enough to give it a warm welcome back to our screens. Strictly Come DANCING
By the time you read this we will be right back in the Strictly swing of things. Autumn wouldn’t be half as enjoyable without this camper than camp glitterfest, from the over-excited announcement of the competing ‘celebrities’ and the eye-watering Latin costumes to Bruno’s hyperactivity and Craig’s withering put-downs. Much has been made of the inclusion of the Rev. Richard Coles and diminutive comedian, Susan Calman this year, but overall the competition seems to have butched up considerably and, on the whole, there are far fewer ‘comedy’ entrants. Enjoy it while it lasts – all too soon it’ll be the final and the realisation that Christmas is next week and we haven’t started to think about shopping for it yet! Lucifer (Series 3) Tom Ellis (Gary, the dishy chef from Miranda, in case you had forgotten) is back as the devilish Lucifer Morningstar, civilian consultant to the LAPD and proprietor of Lux, a swanky nightclub. It is always interesting to see how Neil Gaiman’s characters are adapted for TV and, in the case of Lucifer, he had imagined a David Bowie figure. Fortunately the bosses at FOX, the company responsible for the series, were sensible enough to realise that this would make Lucifer a bit of a devil to cast – excuse the pun – but Ellis makes an excellent job of being the Prince of Darkness in this never less than engaging comedy-drama.

The Write Stuff By KJ Elsdon
What persuades you to pick up a book? Is it a recommendation from a friend? Someone else’s choice at your book club? Maybe it’s the latest work from a favourite author? If you own a Kindle, possibly cost has a lot to do with it; it’s not easy to turn down the chance of owning a 500-page biography of a major historical figure for less than the price of a daily newspaper, after all.

owever, ever since its inception in 1969, the Booker Prize has proved not only an effective way of celebrating Britain’s publishing industry, but has massively boosted sales of any book that appears on the long or shortlists. Every year a mixture of established writers and hot-off-the-press new authors compete for the £50,000 prize and the chance to send their sales into ballistic territory. The media is always packed with stories of how reading will soon be a thing of the past and that, even though traditional books are again outselling e-books, the future is looking bleak for the publishing world. However, October is traditionally the time that it finds a renewed sense of purpose as the Booker Prize shortlist is announced. This year’s shortlist line-up serves as a reasonably typical example of the usual combination of youth and experience: 4321 by Paul Auster, History of Wolves by Emily Fridlund, Exit West by Mohsin Hamid, Elmet by Fiona Mozley, Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders and Autumn by Ali Smith. Of these writers two are British, one is British-Pakistani and three are American, a fact of which the lobby that protested the inclusion of US authors in 2013 will be all too aware. Previously entry had been

confined to writers from Britain, Ireland, the Commonwealth and Zimbabwe, so it caused quite a stir when it was announced, in September 2013, that any writer who published work in English in the UK could be considered. The way having been cleared for American writers to enter, there was considerable opposition to the decision, with many critics predicting that it would be difficult for non-US writers to triumph. It was also pointed out that America’s Pulitzer Prize solely honoured American writers, so it was unnecessary to open the Booker any further. While A.S. Byatt – a winner in 1990 with her novel, Possession – and former judge John Mullan predicted the dilution of the Booker brand, former judge A.L. Kennedy welcomed the decision. In fact, the change has made little difference since only one winner so far has been American; last year’s recipient, Paul Beatty for his satirical novel, The Sellout. While for some fans of contemporary literature, the purchase and consumption of the full longlist (announced in July) forms the basis of their summer holiday reading, others have claimed that there is such a thing
as a ‘typical Booker Prize novel’ and, as such, it is to be avoided at all costs. The criticism levelled at nominees is that their novels are verbose and difficult to follow, with non-linear plots, incomprehensible characters and unengaging, deliberately obscure prose. It’s certainly true that some winners have challenged readers (James Kelman’s How Late It Was, How Late consisted of the stream-of-consciousness ramblings of a drunk ex-convict delivered in dense Glaswegian dialect while Marlon James’s A Brief History of Seven Killings featured Jamaican patois, which proved a challenge too far for many readers), but there have also been some crowd pleasers. Roddy Doyle, best known as the author of the Barrytown Trilogy, won in 1993 for his comparatively slight Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, defeating such literary heavyweights as Michael Ignatieff, Tibor Fischer, Carol Shields, David Malouf and Caryl Phillips. While this announcement proved a stroke of luck for Doyle’s publisher, Secker & Warburg, it attracted criticism from those who expect a Booker winner to be rather more literary and serious. You really cannot please all of the people all of the time. One of the biggest Booker scandals
dates to 1985, when an unknown writer from New Zealand, Keri Hulme, was chosen as the winner over such luminaries as Iris Murdoch and Doris Lessing. Her novel, The Bone People was, in many ways, the ultimate Booker novel, being lengthy, lacking any emotional engagement and requiring a significant amount of focus and dedication. Despite continuing to work in the field of writing and producing, amongst other contributions, several volumes of poetry, Hulme has yet to publish another novel. However, probably not even Hulme created quite the stir that Arundhati Roy managed in 1997 with The God of Small Things. Following the story of fraternal twins, Estha and Rahel, Roy’s novel touched on many issues, from Indian politics and the country’s caste and class systems to forbidden love, misogyny and betrayal. The rights to publish the novel were sold to 21 countries and The God of Small Things remains one of the bestselling Booker winners of all time. Whatever the effect it had on the author can only be speculated upon, but Roy gave up writing for some time and involved herself in various political and environmental causes. Her second novel, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, was published earlier this year and longlisted for the Booker, but failed to make the final shortlist. In 2005 the International Booker Prize was instituted and, until 2015, it was awarded to any living author of any nationality who either wrote in English or made their work available in the English language. This meant that the £50,000 prize would sometimes be divided between the author and his or her translator. In 2016 it was significantly reorganised and is now awarded annually.

Prior to this the Booker-Open Russia Literary Prize was set up in 1992 and, in 2007 the Man Group plc – the current sponsors of the Booker – instituted the Man Asian Literary Prize, awarded every year to an Asian writer whose work is available in English. In 1993 it was decided to mark the 25th anniversary of the main Booker Prize with a special ‘Booker of Bookers’ award, so three literary experts who had previously been judges (namely Malcolm Bradbury, David Holloway and W.L. Webb) met and, after a great deal of debate, chose the 1981 winner, Salman Rushdie’s popular
Midnight’s Children. This was no surprise, since it had already won the popular vote and had consistently been the most high-profile winner to date. As readers eagerly await the announcement of this year’s winner on Tuesday October the 17th at a lavish ceremony in London’s famous Guildhall, refuseniks will be vowing never to read any of the shortlisted books and recalling what A.L. Kennedy – a judge in 1996 – said about the award: “A pile of crooked nonsense [with the winner decided by] who knows who, who’s sleeping with who, who’s selling drugs to who, who’s married to who, whose turn it is.”

On two occasions the judging panels were unable to select a clear winner and the prize was shared: in 1974 both Nadine Gordimer (The Conservationist) and Stanley Middleton (Holiday) were declared victors and in 1992 the joint winners were Barry Unsworth for Sacred Hunger and Michael Ondaatje for The English Patient.
The first female Booker winner, Bernice Rubens, was handed the award for her novel, The Elected Member in 1970, just one year after the award’s inception. Despite prizes being set up specifically for female writers (the Baileys – previously the Orange Prize – being the most prominent), the Booker remains a promoter of female writers.
Multiple Booker winners still constitute a very exclusive club, but three authors have won the prize more than once. J.M. Coetzee won in 1983 with Life and Times of Michael K and in 1999 for Disgrace, Peter Carey’s Oscar and Lucinda carried off the prize in 1988 and, in 2001, True History of the Kelly Gang made him a double winner. However, few achievements are quite as astonishing as those of Hilary Mantel, whose first two parts of her Thomas Cromwell trilogy were both victorious: Wolf Hall in 2009 and Bring Up the Bodies in 2012. The final part, The Mirror and the Light is eagerly awaited and may well leave Mantel the only author to achieve a hat trick.
Despite a reputation for literary impenetrability, several Booker Prize winners have been adapted for the screen: Thomas Keanally’s Schindler’s Ark which won in 1982, was filmed by Steven Spielberg as Schindler’s List, while Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day was also successfully adapted. Its plot might have been impenetrable but The English Patient was also a huge hit at the cinema, while the rights to Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies were bought by the BBC and translated into a widely praised TV series.

Then it was off to La Sala with my friend Rodrigo. This is a longterm favourite, as you can always rely on the team for great food, entertainment and VIP service seems to come as standard too. Special thanks to Comino Couture for my dress.
World Vision
Last month I was lucky enough to attend the Puente Romano World Vision Charity Gala with my good friends, Lisa and Deborah. It was amazing to enjoy such a great night out while also supporting Save The Children. It was a wonderful event with spectacular food by Nobu and entertainment by Black Box among others.
Paying it Forward El Ancla Again
This visit was made with some of my favourite people. One of my best friends, Leanne, has now moved to Dubai but, as she was back with her adorable daughter Lola for the summer, the girls got together and headed to El Ancla, one of the chicest places in Marbella. We enjoyed lunch, cocktails and lots of gossip and catching up.

Just Monkeying Around?
I enjoyed the last of the summer nights with my wonderful friend Bambi Haines at Monkey Club Puente Romano. Bambi is a huge player in the entertainment industry and was over from London to discuss a special project we’re working on. However, for once I will be behind the scenes!
Despite running a business, I know that some people classify me as one of the ladies who lunch, so I thought, why not live up to the term for once? I loved trying out the new El Chiringuito at Puente Romano with Lisa. I can confirm it serves food every bit as delicious as the one in Ibiza - and dare I say that it’s in an even more stunning location?
Training Time
After a summer of indulgence it was time to hit the gym hard! I needed a little help as I seemed to have lost all motivation. Luckily for me fitness girl, Sarah came to the rescue and is whipping my butt into shape three times a week at M13 Gym. Sarah is a highly qualified personal trainer and nutritionist with years of experience. As well as a new exercise regime she has also given me a strict diet plan and I'm looking forward to seeing the results.
Hair Revolution
I’m switching my hair up again - because I can! Believe it or not this was created using only Beauty Works clip-in extensions which are available exclusively at Bardou. I decided to try out a slightly darker shade as well. What do you all think?
Keeping it Natural
One of my favourite things about Marbella are the beautiful sunsets we have. It’s said that sunsets are life’s way of saying “well done for today - here’s something special to celebrate!” And who are we to argue?
Reality TV star and swimwear entrepreneur, Virginia Macari opens her doors exclusively to offer an insight into her travels and plans for the future.

When she’s not extending her beachwear fashion empire Virginia likes to be close to nature, as last month’s activities prove – and where better to enjoy animals and the great outdoors than on the Coast?
Brand recognition
The beautiful model and business woman Caprice Bourett was papped wearing my swimwear again while on her holidays in Ibiza! Just how wonderful does she look? You can buy this Jasmine bikini which has become the celebrities’ favourite bikini in our online shop via my website: www.virginiamacari.com
We are already looking for locations for our 2018 swimwear campaign and will be jetting to a tropical beach to shoot. I’m too excited to reveal who our photographer will be...let’s just say that it’s a big surprise! All I can say is that he or she will be flying in from Los Angeles and has worked with the biggest designers and supermodels over the past 20 years. My new collection is incredible and I am over the moon to announce that we will be selling in Net-A-Porter and Selfridges. And, talking about jetting, Victor private jets are flying into Málaga regularly. My friends and I had some fun recently with this luxury and sexy company. You know every time Victor charters a one-way flight, you can book the unused return journey called a ‘Victor Hop’ at a fraction of the cost. As well as being affordable, Victor Hops are reliable and ready to book, right away. Check out the FAQs on their website and you will see all the live deals, then hop to it before it’s too late. I love Victor private jets! They are the only private jet company Virginia Macari Swimwear uses. Contact them on hops@flyvictor.com.
Gee up!
Doing it for the dogs (and cats!)
I recently attended the Triple A lunch at Le Papillon Beach Club. We danced the whole day to rock ‘n’ roll music and drank tea (yes it really was tea!) It was great fun and a lot of money was raised for a wonderful charity. Triple A, a charity that houses cats and dogs, has been having trouble recently and may have to close. It’s vitally important to support these local charities, especially since Triple A is mostly run by volunteers, dedicated to helping and caring for abandoned and abused animals in the Marbella and San Pedro Alcántara area. They give them love, shelter, medical care and try to find new homes for them so that they can have a second chance for a happy life. My heart!
Horse riding is an enriching and attractive sport for children and adults. It is pleasant because it is practised in a natural environment outdoors and in contact with another living being. Thor and I love going to The Pony Club in Villacana. We go riding on the beach and over the dunes every week. Diana and the team at The Pony Club are fantastic with the kids. It’s positioned near the sea in a picturesque setting and their facilities are fantastic. I cannot recommend it enough. We have fallen in love with the horses there and it’s magical seeing my little five-year-old boy being so expert and inquisitive about their beautiful ponies and it’s all thanks to their wonderful team. Thank you so much, Pony Club Villacana!
Fit for Autumn
I’m back in my favourite gym. I have tried all the fancy classes around Marbella and been to all the new fitness venues but I just keep going back to the best and that is Dynamic Gym. My favourite classes are always with Victor; I love his enthusiasm and he knows just how far to push me, even if I do sometimes hide at the back! I’m enjoying getting fit and toned again after the summer of indulgence and crazy parties. It’s time to focus now and re-boot our bodies and eat healthily again. No more fancy cocktails, just healthy juices and lots of spinning and TRX classes.

LONDON
TAXI
Rankings A tale of cab drivers in London, New York, LA, Pescara and Marbella By Eleanor McKenzie
A
taxi or cab driver, what ever you prefer to call them, is very often your introduction to a new place. It is their character and attitude that can colour your perceptions for good or bad. Of course, your views may depend on what you expect from them and one man’s great cab ride may be another’s disaster. So, how do these cities’ cab drivers’ rank based on my personal experience?
I’ll start with London for the simple reason that I’ve hailed enough cabs there over a period of 20+ years to have a really good idea of the city’s taxi experience, plus I am going to say upfront, that I firmly believe that once you have experienced the London black taxi service, you will measure all others against it. You will even find that taxi services outside London are not quite up to snuff by comparison. Last time I got in a cab at Romford station, the driver quite curtly told me that he wasn’t going to turn the engine on until I buckled up in the back. I was surprised; clearly since I left London, people had taken to following the rules much more closely. What is so great about the London taxi? Let’s start with the fact that you can easily hail one on the street. There is a technique for getting their attention; you need to be completely unembarrassed about shouting “Taxi” very loudly and waving your arm in the air. Amazingly, London cabbies seem to be able to hear really well over all the noise in the streets and are adept at pulling up right by you with pinpoint precision. Sometimes, you’ll even get a taxi with its ‘for hire’ light already turned off to stop, and then they’ll ask where you’re going. If it’s on their route home, they’ll probably take you. The London cabby is a fount of news and humorous tales. Occasionally you’ll get one who doesn’t do small talk, but it’s usually pretty easy to engage them in conversation and pump them for all kinds of information about interesting people they’ve had in their cabs, where is the best place to get a snack at 2am (Brick Lane Beigel Bakery obviously, which is like Taxi Central) and find out their views on every-

thing from the Royal family to Strictly Come Dancing, the state of London’s traffic, the UK economy and Donald Trump. But the one thing by which the London cabbie can beat all others is their knowledge of every nook and corner of the capital. And this is thanks to the black cab drivers having to take a test called ‘The Knowledge’ that takes years of zipping around on a moped with an A-Z before you can pass it. If you’d like to find out more about it, I refer you to the fantastic British TV drama “The Knowledge,” written by the late Jack Rosenthal and starring his wife, the irrepressible Maureen Lipman. It may be old, but it is good. You know that when you get in a black cab and you give the driver an address, they will know the shortest route there. And they are supposed to take you by the best route. Sharp-eyed Londoners can spot when a taxi driver is taking the piss by going the long way round – something that the gypsy cabs and minicab drivers are more likely to try. I recall getting a ‘gypsy’ cab with some friends from Leicester Square to Bethnal Green and suddenly we were in north Hackney. “Are we going via Tehran?” my outspoken friend from Dublin shouted. Once we had guided the driver back to Roman Road, he admitted he had only been in the country for one week and hadn’t a clue where he was. But, in London, we can forgive these things; after all, we had taken this cab knowing it wasn’t even a legit minicab, but that’s what you do sometimes do when you fall out of nightclub and there are queues of people waiting for cabs. In some ways, this experience prepared me for New York.
NEW YORK I’ve had a few experiences with the famous NYC yellow cab service and, like the car itself, they have been fairly colourful. The first one that comes to mind was after a delayed flight from London that left me arriving at Newark around midnight. It was only my second flight to the Big Apple and previously I’d landed at JFK, which I sort of had an idea about where it was in relation to Manhattan. Anyway, having decided to try a flight with Continental from Gatwick, which was known as being the airline from hell, and so it was, complete with brat in front who wouldn’t stop banging his head against the seat back, making my drop-down tray surge towards me. Arriving at midnight, Newark airport was fairly deserted by the time we landed and as I hadn’t a clue about taking public transport, which went to the Port Authority terminal, one of the dodgiest areas of NYC at the time, I decided that taking a taxi would be the simplest and safest option. Well, it was, more or less. My cab driver asked me where I was going and I told him Thompson St. in Greenwich Village. “No problem, ma’am,” he said and started driving.
39
We started talking, mostly about where I came from, why I was in New York and before long I recognised the fact that we were in Manhattan. I had looked at a map before I left London and knew where Thompson St. was in relation to Washington Square Park and SoHo, areas I already knew. We kept going and suddenly I had a feeling we were in the wrong place. Yes, it was another case of going “via Tehran” and another driver who’d only just arrived in the city. It turned out that I knew it better than he did. I was less than impressed as this was a licensed yellow cab, not a fly-bynight minicab, and after a long flight I wasn’t particularly in the mood to start giving directions. But, in order to get to my destination, I had to wake up and get HE WAS my bearings. Anyway, MR. HAPPY I did get there in the PERSONIFIED. end. That was the moment I realised OF COURSE just how much I had grown to depend on HE WAS; HE the London cabbies’ OFFERED ME expertise.
HIS SPLIFF AND INVITED ME TO A NIGHTCLUB.
Then there was another time when thanks to being directed to the wrong metro station by a New Yorker who was more interested in my Irish accent and how I said ‘tomato’ than the layout of Manhattan’s stations, I ended up on the wrong side of Central Park. I wasn’t about to walk across the park late at night on my own, so I hailed a cab. New York cabbies are pretty chatty and entertaining on the whole, although you will find some who are excellent examples of the blunt rudeness that some New Yorkers have a shocking talent for, and this one was Mr Happy personified. Of course he was; he offered me his spliff and invited me to a nightclub. For once in my life I decided that caution should not be thrown to the wind, or the West Side, and politely declined. But, it is on my list of highly entertaining taxi journeys. I’ve also used a gypsy cab from JFK, where my friend and I had to talk to the driver all the way into Manhattan just to keep him from closing his eyes and driving into the Hudson. Mind you, as crazy as he was, when we discovered that we’d left a bag of valuable African fabrics in his car, thankfully with a friend’s business card attached, he got in touch and delivered them back to the doorstep. We weren’t expecting such honesty in NYC, but he restored our faith and made New York that bit more memorable, if it is possible to say such a thing of a city that is impossible to forget. It certainly packs a bigger impression than LA.
40
LOS ANGELES This city is a conundrum to me, and so are its taxis. In fact, I can’t even think what an LA cab looks like. And then I figured out why; everyone has to drive in LA, so using a taxi is sort of irrelevant. Somebody will always offer to drive rather than take a cab if you’re staying with friends, even if you’re going to a club. Nowadays, its all about Uber in LA, so I expect those LA taxis are still wearing invisibility cloaks. But, I do have one experience to share. My friend and I were flying back to NYC and nobody was available to drive us to the airport, so we started looking up taxi and limousine services. No, our hosts didn’t know anything about LA taxis, so we were dependant on the phone directory. We spotted an ad for a service whose drivers ‘speak your language’ and looking through the list we selected an Afrikaans-speaking driver and spent the Pescara is a city on the Adriatic in the rest of the afternoon packing and hooting Abruzzo region of Italy. The easiest way with laughter (there must have been to get there in 1986 was fly to Rome something’ Californian’ wafting in the air!). and take a train journey. That part My friend could speak some Afrikaans and I all went swimmingly well. But, then I had some basic phrases, and we had been arrived in Pescara. I was staying with visiting African art galleries to sell antique friends who had been relocated here Zulu artefacts, hence the connection. The for work courtesy of Heineken and driver was a statuesque blonde who clearly they lived in a villa in the countryside thought we were a couple of lunatics. above the city. I’d promised I would Frankly, there wasn’t much Afrikaans chat call when I arrived at the train forthcoming. It was a little dull in the end station, but there was no answer at really, a bit like my perception of LA. So, this the house. So, with address in hand will be my abiding memory of my one LA cab and a small smattering of Italian, ride – it was like something out of a B-rated I went into my default mode and Hollywood comedy. But, in Italy things were grabbed a taxi outside the station. even more hilarious.
PESCARA
MARBELLA And so to Marbella, where I have used many taxis. The first thing I had to get used to here was that there was no culture of hailing one on the street – I had to call for one. Then I had to estimate when they would arrive. SPANIARDS Sometimes it seemed that they had been lurking near the house, ARE GREAT ready to respond, and then drive off when I didn’t get out the door TALKERS fast enough. Other times, I had AND WHEN to keep calling and asking where YOU GET A the taxi was.
CHATTY ONE IT’S FUN. BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS FOOTBALL
But, what are the cab drivers like? I’d have to say they are a very mixed bunch. Some have good knowledge of the local area, and this can be a challenge, given that lots of streets and avenues don’t have a name. There is no A-Z to consult if you get lost, unlike London, and I don’t think that Google maps have even quite got to grips with Marbella. So, you must be prepared to give directions here. Otherwise you can end up in entirely the wrong place, like the elderly couple who were supposed to go to Regina’s restaurant and were taken to a brothel. This is how wrong it can go!
We were travelling up winding roads with few houses and little light. As best as I could, I asked if he knew where he was going. Oh yes, of course Signorina. But then we passed a house that we’d only driven past a few minutes before. Hm, I thought. I repeated the address I’d been given and he nodded, drove a bit further then pulled up at a house. Ah, I’ve arrived I thought. No, I hadn’t. This was a house belonging to complete strangers, even taxi driver didn’t know them, but he wanted me to use their phone and call my friends. So, this is Italian warmth and generosity I surmised; inviting strangers into your house SOMETIMES to make phone calls. To YOU NEED TO cut the story a bit shorter, I through to my friends’ UNDERSTAND got son and he said they THE LOCAL were out looking for me. Could I wait for them ECONOMY somewhere I asked. Yes, AND CULTURE there was a bar nearby. I WHEN YOU GET got the taxi driver to take me to the bar where he IN A TAXI. charged about a week’s wages in lira for the circuitous journey. It was a mixed bag experience, but it did teach me that there are taxi drivers who take advantage of foreigners, and I hadn’t experienced that before, although I would never presume that all Italian cab drivers are devious. Sometimes you need to understand the local economy and culture when you get in a taxi.
Spaniards are great talkers and when you get a chatty one it’s fun. Be prepared to discuss football – a live match commentary is often blaring out of the radio –but do find out what team the driver supports before yelling “Gol!” Local politics and the state of traffic at any given time and, of course, road works are also topics of huge interest to a Marbella cab driver. They will give you an insight into how locals feel about what is going on in the town hall that you won’t be able to glean so easily from the English-language press, and many of them are extremely kind and will go out of their way to help, especially if you have an emergency, such as getting a very ill child to an ambulatorio. One also gave me invaluable tips on how to pass the Spanish driving theory test. I’m sorry I don’t know his name, but whoever he is, he made a difference. Overall, Marbella’s cab drivers are good, helpful and work in challenging conditions, i.e. seasonal ups and downs in passenger numbers, but having said that, they have little competition to keep them on their toes, although there is the excellent Cabify if you want to go a bit ’Uber’ in Marbella.
So, in conclusion, I have to say that London still leads the taxi rankings for knowledge and service, even if the fares are now eye-watering. Taking a cab in New York is an adventure and in LA, it is probably easier to use Uber. In any place where you’re not sure of distance and location, at least try to establish a fare up front, and in Marbella, make sure you get the phone number for cabs covering the area you are in, make sure you are on the street waiting for them, and equip yourself with directions to where you are going. Lastly, never expect your taxi driver to behave like the drivers do in your home country – that will take you on a road to nowhere fast.

SELF-AWARENESS TAKES EFFORT
But It’s Worth It
I
f you feel like you can’t be alone with your thoughts, you need to be alone with your thoughts! These are full of information that can benefit you, since they tell you a great deal about your personality, in which direction your life is headed and which concerns you need to address. Thinking is hard work though, which is why we sometimes don’t do it as much as we should. To investigate what we think about and why we think what we think about, takes motivation and energy - and sometimes courage, too. If you understand yourself you can help yourself and when you understand yourself, you can also improve your relationships with others. Why? Because self-awareness enables better understanding of others and now research also suggests this is the case. The authors of this study, Böckler et al. (2017), state: “As citizens of the twentyfirst century, we face many problems of an industrialized and globalized world. Tensions between countries, cultures, and religions are rising; wars and political instabilities drive millions of people to leave their homes and seek refuge; and
44
IF YOU UNDERSTAND YOURSELF YOU CAN HELP YOURSELF AND WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND YOURSELF, YOU CAN ALSO IMPROVE YOUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS
the consequences of climate change become ever more visible. Skillful solutions to these problems will require cooperation across nationalities and cultures. In order to achieve this goal, we need to put ourselves in the shoes of others—considering the viewpoint of those who hold different political and religious views and who are seeking shelter in our countries as well as bearing in mind the needs of future generations. Taking the cognitive perspective of other people is relevant for peaceful and successful interactions not only on an inter-cultural scale, but also in families, schools, and workplaces, both when communicating with acquaintances and with complete strangers.”
Talking about their study’s results, they explain, “This finding suggests a close link between getting better in understanding oneself and improvement in social intelligence.” SELF-AWARENESS LEADS TO OTHER AWARENESS How ‘socially intelligent’ are you and how is it impacting your mental wellbeing, your relationships at home and your relationships with others? We live in a distracted world and our attention is almost constantly being pulled in various directions throughout the day, from adverts to social media to mainstream media to family and friends to goals you’re focused on achieving to the distractions you’re using to suppress negative emotions.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU JUST SIT THERE TAKING IN THE WORLD OR SIT THINKING ABOUT THINGS INSTEAD OF SIMPLY CONSUMING MORE INFORMATION?
UNLESS WE ENGAGE WELL WITH OUR THOUGHTS WE CAN NEVER MOVE ON FROM HOW THEY MAY BE IMPRISONING US IN MISERY During your distracted day, how much of it do you spend on activities and how much of it do you spend just thinking? We’ve stripped away so much of our thinking time by being overly immersed in our smartphones as well as in other people’s lives, or at least their presentation of it. How often do you just sit there taking in the world or sit thinking about things instead of simply consuming more information? When you’re dining with a friend and they leave the table to visit the bathroom, how often do you use that moment to appreciate where you are and all you’re absorbing through your senses? How often do you use those moments to just think about something you need to think about and leave your smartphone in your pocket? Unless we engage well with our thoughts we can never move on from how
they may be imprisoning us in misery, anger, ignorance or apathy, however subconsciously. We may be hurting ourselves with thoughts that aren’t serving us or we may be hurting our loved ones or our neighbours with our lack of reflection and introspection. Remember that every time your brain absorbs a message from yourself or someone else, it has an impact. It impacts you physiologically inside your body in ways you probably don’t think about and it impacts your behaviour.
START THINKING ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT AND HOW MUCH IT IS SERVING YOU AND THE REST OF US. WE ARE ALL DEEPLY CONNECTED, AFTER ALL But, here’s the thing, nothing happens in isolation, it all has a ripple effect; you have a ripple effect on your own life, your loved ones’ and mankind itself. Start thinking about what you think about and how much it is serving you and the rest of us. We are all deeply connected, after all.

We are Marbella’s
Medical Spa
Medical spas have become more popular in recent years for both men and women; they are a kind of hybrid between the traditional day spa and a medical clinic. Unlike day spas, medical spas are run by a medical doctor, just like in our clinic. At Cirumed Medical Spa we offer treatments ranging from luxury facials to facial thread lifts, Scandinavian sugaring hair removal to botox and filler, facial peels to laser skin resurfacing and plenty of other non-surgical treatments. Our most popular non-surgical treatment is probably CoolSculpting, with over 4000 cycles of experience and the only clinic to dispose of two Zeltiq machines, which halves the treatment time, it’s no wonder we are Spain’s largest coolsculpting practice. The procedure is a clinically proven method that selectively reduces unwanted fat using a patented cooling technology. The CoolSculpting procedure has been cleared by the FDA for cold-assisted lipolysis (breakdown of fat). It works by gently cooling targeted fat cells in the body to induce a natural, controlled elimination of fat cells without affecting the surrounding tissue, and the treated fat cells are gone for good. This non-invasive fat removal technique only takes a mere hour per applicator, but the busy lifestyle of not only our local Marbella patients but also our out of town patients who are only around for a limited time, leads many of them to opt for combining this procedure with our other non-surgical treatments, to make the most of their time. We have many package deals available for patients who wish to maximize the use of their time. What sets our Medical Spa apart from others is our position in also offering plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery carried out by the “Best Aesthetic Surgeon in Spain” (as awarded by Medical Livewire), our director Dr. Alexander Aslani. All of our surgeons are elected and contracted staff at Spain’s largest private healthcare provider, proving the true skill behind their surgical techniques and experience. Our specialty surgery, which our surgeons are experts in, is the Brazilian Butt lift. Commonly known as a “BBL”, it is the ideal Plastic surgery procedure: it removes unwanted fat from one part of the body and uses it for the shaping of tight, perky, round and feminine buttocks. Brazilian butt lift surgery is capable of achieving very impressive body reshaping without much scarring or use of silicone. Cirumed Clinic Marbella is one of very first and few clinics in Europe specializing in Brazilian butt lift surgery. Our surgeons operate hundreds of cases every year, and they are consistently invited to share their experience with this procedure at scientific surgery panels. The combination of all the relaxing, rejuvenating and enhancing treatments offered at our clinic with the outstanding levels of plastic surgery, creates the perfect environment to set up a Medical Spa, in order for us to offer the widest variety of treatments to suit all patients desires and needs.

ACHIEVING YOUR IDEAL BODY SHAPE PT.2
F
ollowing on from last month’s tips I’m going to stick with the upper body and share some ideas for building the chest. Key exercises to include in your programme for maximal growth of the chest muscles are: • The barbell bench press – this is obviously the king of chest exercises and for good reason; barbell pressing movements allow for the use of heavier loads and the pectoralis major (main muscle of the chest) is maximally activated in the early and middle phases of the lift. Good technique requires maintaining a solid and stable position with the shoulder blades (think tucked back and down) and not allowing the shoulders to roll forward in the bottom position. Keep the angle in the armpit close to 45 degrees (wide and high elbows can put the shoulders at risk) and maintain pressure into the ground with the feet to keep the rest of the body stable. • Incline dumbbell press – the pecs will benefit most from a variety of training angles and using an incline will target the upper chest. Using dumbbells will increase the stability demands and help to even out any left to right strength differences. Follow
48
the same technique guidelines as those set for the barbell bench press regarding shoulder and elbow position. • Feet elevated press up (a 12-inch box will be sufficient) – press-ups are always a great option for training the upper body as you can do them anywhere. Elevating the feet will target the lower chest a little more and the movement of the shoulder blades (think of them moving around the rib cage which is different from the more static position required for the exercises above) is great for shoulder health and stability. Good technique requires no sagging at the hips or lower back. Keep the head in line with the body and lead with the chest so it hits the space between the hands. Keep the angle in the armpit close to 45 degrees and reach long with the arms at the top of the movement, pushing the rib cage back. If you struggle for time you can pair these exercises with the back session from last month to build one workout, alternating between a back and a chest exercise. Alternatively, if you have time to train more frequently, you can do them as separate sessions. Try following the same set and rep scheme and aim to complete two sessions a week...
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR FACTOR FEEL-GOOD
WEEK 1 - 3x8 (72reps/session, 144reps/ week) WEEK 2 - 3x 10 (90reps/session, 180reps/ week) WEEK 3 – 3x12 (108reps/session, 216reps/ week) WEEK 4 - (deload week), 2x10 (60reps/ session, 120reps/week) Then repeat the cycle for next four weeks, aiming to add small increases to the weights used (don’t miss any reps though!). Aim to include these exercises into your training schedule twice each week.
“IF YOU STRUGGLE FOR TIME YOU CAN PAIR THESE EXERCISES WITH THE BACK SESSION FROM LAST MONTH TO BUILD ONE WORKOUT, ALTERNATING BETWEEN A BACK AND A CHEST EXERCISE.”
NUTRITIONAL TIP Following on from last month’s tip, recent research into protein consumption seems to suggest that evenly spreading your intake throughout the day is a better option for optimising muscle protein synthesis. Therefore, to grow muscle you don’t necessarily need to eat as much protein as possible and you should avoid eating too much in one go. Instead, keeping an even spread of roughly 30grams every four hours (or every meal) will be a better way to serve your goals.

A
s the summer comes to an end, many changes are taking place in Reflections which Jonathan has decided to address in this month’s column. It is time to say goodbye to some of the salon’s superstars and open the doors to welcome new, fresh, talented members to the team.
Much ado...
I am going to start the column off on a happy note and share with you one of my favourite events of the summer – the Caradas' wedding. A few years ago, I was asked to do the hair for Kara Caradas' wedding and a friendship was quickly born from a mutual admiration of backcombing and volume. It was a match made in heaven, one that will stand the test of time. I was, of course, delighted to be included in the wedding of Kara’s sister Penny this summer. I have always been made to feel part of the family and it was an honour just to be with them while they got ready for the big day, never mind look after their hair. It was honestly one of the best Saturday mornings I can remember, we spent the whole time laughing; it was simply lovely. Penny’s look was ‘fairytale princess’. From the word go it was all about elegance, so she wanted a timeless classic up-do. Though do not be fooled into thinking this was a simple look; the fact that this said up-do took a couple of hours to achieve the desired Grecian inspired look might give you a little more insight into the

complexity of this hairstyle. When I say “complex” I refer to intricate use of one of two pieces of false hair. In the interest of my safety, I am not allowed to divulge what exactly went into the ‘do’, suffice to say that if she had gone near a magnet or a naked flame her wedding day would have turned out rather differently! It would be a lie to say I wasn’t worried about the weight of her hair, and wouldn’t have been surprised if it caused her head to fall off while she attempted to do the Irish jig. She was under strict instructions not to bend down at any point, as there was no way she would be getting up again. The bridesmaids (her sisters) were guided by Penny with variations on the theme of a side ponytail, each look being tailored to suit their unique personalities. The bride’s mum, who is always effortlessly understated wanted, in her own words, to feel “normal” on her daughter’s special day, so I softly wanded her hair to achieve a boho look. Again, I am not going to divulge anything that went on that day while creating the Caradas family’s hair do’s, but let’s just say there was more than one bag of hair floating around that afternoon. I escaped a clip-on ponytail by the skin of my teeth. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. On a final note, I can testify to the durability of my work, evidence being available in the form of a video showing me hurling Kara around the dance floor to Little Richard. There wasn’t a hair out of place.
Time to say goodbye
It is with great sadness that all good things must come to an end. After eight years my Lottie has decided to spread her wings and move on to ventures new. As regular
New beginnings
readers will be aware, she has, for some time, been suffering with an incurable addiction to her phone. Having taken professional advice it was suggested the only way to proceed was to remove her from the environment in which she couldn’t keep her sticky little fingers off her phone. If Steve Jobs was still around he would have received a stern email from me by now, requesting compensation for loss of man hours. Lottie needed a new challenge, something upon which to focus her brilliant mind and this was presented in the shape of Lash Crowd, the new salon which specialises in all things brows and, as the name suggests, lashes. She can now be found adorning their sumptuous reception. I have sent her on her way with a big kiss, lots of love and the very best wishes for whatever the future may bring. However, this hasn’t stopped me from telling people I sacked her for fiddling. Some days I just can’t help myself. All jokes aside, love you Lottie.
As the summer draws to a close, our usual exodus of summer staff has begun. As anyone with a business in Marbella knows, it is either feast or famine. We are desperately on the hunt for new staff. It is with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to our fabulous beauty therapist, Cristina Camacho Herrera who has left to focus on her own business. As the saying goes, she would be welcomed back with open arms whenever she chose. This, of course, means we now have an opening for a full-time, experienced beauty therapist. As many of you may know our hairstylist Rachel Leamy has been leaving since March and, after weeks and weeks of false starts, she’s wending her way back to the Emerald Isle and I wish her all the best. (I am actually a bit bored with all this ‘best wishes’ malarkey and am getting on my own nerves now!) If any talented hairstylist who excels in all areas of hairdressing fancies working in one of the most established salons on the Coast please send your CV to john@reflectionsmarbella.com You would need to be strong in the blow-drying department, excel in cutting, colouring and highlights, oh, and gents hairstyling is also a must. Don’t be put off by the rumours - I am actually very easy to work with and don’t bite. Well, only sometimes!
It’s all kicked off
For anyone who wants a laugh then please get onto Facebook and look out for Gerry’s six seconds of fame with his Taekwondo promo video. The jury is still out to which celebrity he most resembles, my favourite being Grandpa from The Munsters. It has provided me with hours of entertainment and the video has had numerous hits on YouTube and Facebook although, having said that, I am probably responsible for about 1000 of them. I am still astounded by how high he can get his leg for a man of a certain age. That foot has skimmed my ear on more than one occasion!

Marbellís take great pride in their appearance and when a new beauty salon opens, it is always arouses considerable interest. SOCIETY was fortunate enough to visit Lash Crowd, which opened during summer, and talk to its owner Miriam Trezise and salon director Kirsty Penrose about the business and its fabulous lashes.
What sets you apart from other salons? Our journey began in 2016 when a Lash Artist and her customer found each other and became friends. They shared a passion to bring something very special to Marbella’s beauty scene and in July 2017 Lash Crowd was born. Lash Crowd is the first specialist lash, brow and beauty bar situated in Puerto Banús, Marbella. We are different to other beauty salons in Marbella who offer lash extensions and brow treatments as a secondary service, outsourcing them to third parties. We employ our own specialist artists and technicians who adopt the latest techniques and utilise the best products to ensure our customers stand out from the crowd! Furthermore, our staff are vigorously and continuously trained to ensure our customers always receive market leading treatments and service. We know that no two customers’ features are the same so we adopt a consultation approach and recommend the treatments we think are the most appropriate for you. What services/treatments do you offer? We offer a wide range of treatments for lashes, brows and beauty: LASHES Our lash extension range is extensive and includes individual, Russian and Hyper Russian. We have also designed our own range of striplashes and have 24 different styles in stock. BROWS We offer traditional treatments such as brow threading, tinting and waxing but specialise in the following specialist brow shaping and design techniques: High Definition Brows is a specialist sevenstage eyebrow shaping and design technique. Our experienced artists

The treatment stages include tinting, waxing and threading eyebrows to perfection, using specialist HD Brow products. Beverly Hills Definition is another specialist treatment we offer that provides a more prominent definition and uses premium makeup from Anastasia Beverly Hills. Microblading is the latest semipermanent treatment for perfect eyebrows. Our in-house specialist microblading artist consults with customers to agree an individual look by drawing the desired shape with removable pencil. Once satisfied, we will use a specialist microblading pen to semi-permanently draw on individual strokes one by one.
We also offer an array of beauty treatments: LASER HAIR REMOVAL We have invested in the latest safest, effective and pain free laser machines from the US. We offer permanent hair reduction (including ingrown hairs) and all skin tones are suitable for the process. You will see results after a single treatment, but 6 to 8 treatments are normally recommended. LASER REJUVENATION Laser rejuvenation is a spectacular anti-ageing treatment, which stimulates the skin cells and promotes collagen

NAILS After We offer an array of nail treatments including nail repair, file & tidy, manicure, pedicure, shellac manicure, gelish manicure and gel extensions. MAKEUP We offer makeup application by our MUA team and customers can choose from a range of natural and party looks. Is there a particular range of products that you use? The majority of our lash extensions have been designed specifically for us in Germany, so we have our own brand. We also stock a range of premium products including Revitalash, Revitabrow, Chrissanthie, High Definition, Anastasia Beverly Hills and the Tropic vegan-friendly natural beauty range. DERMAPLANING Dermaplaning is the new way to exfoliate your face. It involves an experienced technician using a 10 gauge scalpel to gently scrape off the top layer of dulling dead skin cells in order to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion. You will see an instant improvement in your skin texture and tone, with the long term effects being increased cell turnover, reduced wrinkles, acne scarring reduction and
We live in a world where beauty and fashion are heavily promoted by the media and the Internet. Celebrities promote the latest beauty trends to millions of people all over the world and women just love keeping up with what these famous names are doing. The lash and brow market has grown considerably in recent years and we forecast it will continue for quite some time to come. What are the lashes made of and is there a particular brand you prefer to use? We have our own silk lash extension brand, which has been designed exclusively for us. We also have our own range of striplashes in both silk and mink, and 12 different styles of each.
Is there a trend in lash styles? The latest trend in lash extensions is Russian Volume with 75% of our customers opting for this look. More and more customers are having two tone Ombre lashes fitted. We currently offer these in blue/black, purple/black and red/black. What is different about the Russian lashes you offer? We have a huge selection of thickness, length, colour and curls. We utilise a special glue which works exceptionally well with Marbella’s humidity levels. Also, applying Russian Volume lashes is an art and we have the best Lash Artists in Marbella to ensure we exceed customer expectations. What is the average cost of lash extensions and how often do they need to be replaced? A full set of Individual lashes is €80 and Russian Volume lashes are €120. Both require maintenance appointments every two to three weeks, which costs €40 (Individual) and €50 (Russian Volume). Some clients prefer to come to us weekly for a tidy up which costs €20 (Individual) and €25 (Russian Volume). Thank you Miriam and Kirsty for explaining the amazing world of lash extensions. Well, there you have it Marbella – the ultimate place to go for lashes, brow shaping and much more is Lash Crowd. Avenida José Banús, Ed. Málaga II L2E Puerto Banús, T. 951 765 408 lashcrowd.com

Beach Polo Tarifa 2017 We attended…
The fourth Beach Polo Tarifa tournament organised by Isabel de Borbon (Polo4Ever) on 16th and 17th September. It was the first Polo Playa Andalucia Championship to be held on Los Lances Beach. The event had a very international audience made up of polo fans, spectators from Sotogrande, Marbella and Tarifa and included VIP guests.
We applauded…
The Credit Suisse team, who won the match after a very hard fought game against team Trocadero. The other two big teams that participated were Scapa and the Fischer Car Gallery / Von Poll Real Estate team. The Mayor of Tarifa, Francisco Ruiz Giráldez, presented the championship cup to great applause, because Tarifa has given such great support to the event.
We loved…
The after party at Chiringuito de Carbones 13 where Marbella DJs, Lola Z and Kique Gold spun the decks and brought the night alive.

The afternoon tea event was held at Le Papillon restaurant on 19th September and the demand for tickets exceeded expectations with 200 guests attending the event that raised an amazing €7,000 for the rescue centre.
We nibbled on…
The sumptuous sandwiches and cakes accompanied by a choice of tea, coffee or cava.
We loved…
The entertainment line up arranged by Rocking Mel from Camberwell and we applauded all the artists who had given their time for free. It was a truly fun afternoon and a great success.
Congratulations and a big thank you to…

The fabulous launch party for El Madroñal Residence. These two exceptional villas certainly have the ‘wow’ factor as all the guests at the launch agreed.
We enjoyed…
The amazing canapés and cocktails, plus the live jazz entertainment that gave the evening a great atmosphere.
We admired…
The villa interiors designed by FOC Design as well as the architectural style of the two villas, which offer breathtaking views of the coast. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and felt envious of anyone who has the opportunity to live in either of them.
Congratulations a big thank you to…and
Caroline and Luke from Propana Group and FOC Design team whose party organisation skills showed the same attention to detail as these exquisite villas.

Robust Reds
Knowing which wine is the perfect match with each dish is the mark of a real expert, so we are very lucky that our sommelier, Julio, has all the answers.
L
ocated in the province of Zamora in Castille and León, the Toro Region has recently gained wide acclaim for the quality of its wines. Tinta de Toro is the grape behind that success; an early-ripening grape known for being thick-skinned and potent, which translates into character-filled wines noted for their colour, jammy flavours and top range strength.
As one of several Spanish wine regions located along the Duero River, the Toro DO encompasses the town of the same name as well as 14 other towns and villages. Most Toro vineyards lie south of the river. For many decades Toro wines were considered full bodied, slightly rustic reds; however, today they are increasingly elegant, sophisticated, with a distinctive character and real power.
D-Wine's Top Ten Reds and Today's Most Precious Jewel of Toro.
1. Thermanthia. Numanthia Termes: this is the
winery’s extra special cuvée that was awarded the maximum 100 points by Robert Parker for the 2004 vintage and is classed as one of Spain’s most exceptional wines. The indigenous Tinta de Toro grapes were rigorously selected and picked by hand from the ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines of a single parcel, aged well over 120 years old.
2. Alabaster. Bodegas Teso La Monja: in
ancient times, the Egyptians and Greeks used to preserve their most aromatic perfumes in delightful alabaster bottles. What a lovely introduction to an elegant wine, as delicate as Alabaster, made from grape clusters that have been destalked by hand and trodden in the traditional way so as to achieve a very gentle extraction. Alabaster is the Eguren family's most exclusive Toro wine — a wine that is pure balance and harmony.
3. Numanthia. Numanthia Termes:
recognized as one of Spain’s most outstanding red wines, this wine is named after Numancia, the pace where the Celtiberians struggled valiantly against the mighty Roman legions. These same traits of tenacity and resilience are found in the Toro vineyards, in their resistance to climatic inclemency.

4. Pintia. Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia:
this Vega Sicilia owned winery has made a successful attempt at refining the Tinta de Toro, the region's indigenous Tempranillo grape, by revealing a more elegant side to its personality; it works perfectly well with an ebullient full-fruit expression and power so often found in this variety.
5. San Román. Bodegas Maurodos:
San Román appears among the great wines of Toro. What else could we expect from a great winemaker like Mariano Garcia? It confirms that today's Toro wines bear no similarity to those strong, rough, harsh wines of times past. This is elegant, fragrant and sophisticated. A classy wine, one of those we so often describe as ‘feminine’.
6.
Gran Elías Mora. Bodegas Elías Mora: a classic from Toro, made only
in great vintages with Toro grapes from vines more than 70 years old. This wine is from Pago “Senda de los Lobos” and is considered one of the most reputable in San Román de Hornija.
7.
Pago La Jara. Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez: a wine which
epitomises the house brand: good fruit content and toasty oak. A rounded, pleasant and powerful wine, made from Tinta de Toro grapes and originating from three single estate vineyards with vines aged between 50 to 60 years old that are low-yielding and produce small clusters.
8.
Victorino. Bodegas Teso la Monja: Victorino is made from Tinta de
Toro grapes, originating from vineyards over 45 years old located in Valdefinjas, Toro and Villabuena del Puente, with yields of 15 hl/ha.
9. Almirez. Bodegas Teso La Monja:
Almirez comes from old, ungrafted, head-pruned Tinta de Toro vines. The wine spent 12 months in 30 per cent new French oak. A fabulous effort which results in a wine that could easily pass for a big, rich Chateauneuf du Pape, even though there is not a touch of Grenache to be found in it.
10.
Paydos. Viñedos Alonso del Yerro: Paydos
comes from ungrafted bush vines between 30 and 60 years old, planted on sandy soil with chalky clay and gravel. It is aged in French oak for 15 months under the supervision of consultant Stephane Derenoncourt. You may find verticals of all these wines at D-Wine Marbella, come and taste one of Spain’s most exciting reds. D-Wine also stocks the exclusive Teso la Monja 2008 and 2009 in its first two vintages: the Eguren family´s most outstanding wine and a winemaker’s jewel which elevates Spanish viticulture. This wine is grown and produced biodynamically, totally handcrafted and presented in a display case befitting its magnificence. The Teso La Monja bottle is
accompanied by a replica version in a presentation case, carved out of beech wood and created to resemble the innovative ovoid tank from which it emanated after its meticulous biodynamic production processes. Teso La Monja originates from an old pre-phylloxera vineyard, whereby all tasks are performed manually and at specific times in order to carry out procedures most effectively. These preparations require minimum intervention, thus the wine produced is of maximum character and indicative of the terroir and grapes. This costly approach results in a wine, which is exclusive and in limited supply. Teso La Monja is deemed one of the most expensive wines within Spain and one which many critics are already placing on the podium of Spain’s greatest wines. * Some wine facts have been taken from Vinissimus web page.

n philosophical terms, the outgoing S63 AMG was a car I was at odds with from day one. While I totally got the popularity of the C63 AMG as a pocket rocket, and the E63 AMG as a more grown up version of the same, the S63 AMG always struck me as the schizophrenic one of the three, the limousine and hot-rod sides of its character teetering on the brink of an incipient identity crisis. While the ‘always on’ nature of the M156 6.2 litre naturally aspirated motor in the W221 version, and the 5.5 litre bi-turbo M157 in the outgoing W222 S63 AMG were fine for the driver, the constant exhaust rumble and growl made life less than tranquil for rear seat passengers. All that has changed with the second generation W222 S63 AMG, which extends its performance envelope in many ways. That ‘always on’ exhaust rumble is now only there when you select Sport+ mode, or indeed in any other mode at a touch of a bespoke button on the centre console. I played rear-seat VIP for some 30 kilometres with the drivetrain set to Comfort mode and found it totally civilised at light throttle cruise, with the

sporty exhaust note barely noticeable, and certainly not loud enough to intrude as it did before. Push the button to let the full acoustic spread back in the game and the AMG signature NASCAR grade V8 roar returns in full measure. With 612hp at rpm and 800Nm of torque at rpm, the M177 4.0 litre bi-turbo V8 punches 27hp harder than the outgoing 5.5 litre M157 bi-turbo V8, while being discernibly smoother as well. And the cylinder shut-off system used to enhance economy on a light throttle is absolutely indiscernible in action. This is a fine engine in the C63 and E63, but as part of the intrinsically finely honed S-Class package, its sporting persona takes on a whole new dimension that is a pinnacle of the mailed fist in a velvet glove concept. Smoothness extends to the way the S63 AMG rockets down the autobahn on full noise, slipping through the nine closely stacked forward ratios of its AMG Speedshift MCT dual wet clutch transmission. Although the S63 AMG is significantly larger and heavier than the E63 AMG, and has a taller final drive, you would never know it from the way the speedometer rockets round the dial to head butt the soft-cut electronic limiter at an indicated 265km/h. From the way the big S-Class is still accelerating at that point it feels that the electronic limiter is only thing preventing its onward charge to the far side of 300km/h. Of course ticking a box

on the options sheet, and handing over a certain amount of money facilitates deletion of that annoying line of code. If you want to play hooligan, a race start function allows you to try for the claimed 3.5 sec 0-100km/h sprint time. Doing this in a two-ton plus limousine seems beyond ridiculous, but you just have to try it once.
THE NEW AMG 4MATIC SYSTEM CAN SEND 100% OF THE ENGINE’S POWER TO THE REAR WHEELS IF REQUIRED, WITH A MAXIMUM OF 50% TO THE FRONT.
The new AMG 4Matic system can send 100% of the engine’s power to the rear wheels if required, with a maximum of 50% to the front. That said, there is no Drift Mode on this car, this feature staying exclusive to the E63 AMG for now. On the subject of 4WD, there is no change to the rear-wheel-drive only status for right-hand-drive models. Thanks to some mainly software upgrades to the air suspension, the performance envelope has been widened. Thus, the new car rides better in Comfort mode, while its roll resistance and handling are improved in Sport mode. I asked why AMG continue to use single chamber air springs while rivals such as
the new Panamera and even smaller brother E63 AMG use three chamber units for better response and a wider performance range. AMG engineer Daniel Kremer explained that the E63 AMG benefits from the faster responding, wider band triple chamber air springs. “However, as it is a limousine with sporting flair as opposed to a sports saloon, the big S-Class is able to achieve its design goals with the single chamber air suspension units.” In a nutshell, the new S63 AMG has a smaller, more economical, more refined and slightly more powerful engine than before, a quieter exhaust in Comfort mode, and better ride and handling. Combine this with the new and improved features common to all the facelift S-Class models and you have an S63 AMG that at last delivers on all its promises. As it is now able to play either comfortable limousine or sporting saloon at the touch of a button without the confusing overlap it exhibited before, I am happy to say that its identity crisis is well and truly over.

TORQUE TALK
Mercedes has not had a straight-six engine in its passenger car range since the M104 24-valve twin-cam gave way to the 18-valve M112 V6 range in 1996. Now, a touch over two decades later, the journey has come full circle for the same reason, but with a twist. Back in the early ‘90s, power and smoothness were priorities, and while fuel consumption and emissions were high up on the list they were not as pressing issues as they are today.
S500 & S400d
126
With the numbers on their side, it made sense to develop the naturally-aspirated M112 V6 and M113 V8 as modular engines, leaving the four-cylinder and V12 engines to fend for themselves on either side, although the 36-valve twin-turbo M275 motor is conceptually related to M112 and M113. Today however, with new levels of fuel consumption, emissions and efficiency obtained with the help of turbocharging, the era of displacement downsizing is in full swing and we are seeing fourcylinder engines replacing sixes, and sixes replacing V8s in a given model range.
Sheer production numbers now back up a new strategy that sees the modular engine range spanning turbocharged four and six-cylinder motors. Since a straight six (i6 for inline 6) is simply a four with two extra cylinders, this is the primary reason for dropping the V6. So now the V8 and V12 motors are the outsiders. The last i6 powered S-Class models I drove were the W140 S320 and S280. The former’s performance was best described as adequate; the latter definitely struggled with the cars weight. That cannot be said of the new 2,999cc petrol S500, and 2,925cc diesel S400d, whose turbocharged i6 engines endow them with an abundance of power and torque and distinctly lively performance with good economy and emissions. I drove the S500 first, and while this is the first ever S-Class with this badge to have a mere six-cylinders, Mercedes justify using the S500 label as the new six matches the outgoing V8 in its output while significantly improving fuel economy and emissions.
TORQUE TALK
While you may miss the deep V8 burble when you move off briskly you will certainly be impressed with the smooth and potent delivery of 435hp at 5,900rpm and 520Nm of torque between 1,500 and 5,500rpm. The stopwatch records this 2,005kg saloon rocketing to 100km/h in 4.8 sec, with its top speed electronically limited to 250km/h. So how did the engineers extract so much power from a mere 3.0 litre six and make it reliable? “We knew we would need a big turbocharger to get the top-end power,” says powertrain development engineer, Kay Dietzel. “Thanks to the partial 48-volt electrical system, we are able to use the starter/ generator to provide 250Nm of torque when you step on the throttle at low revs, with the first stage electrically driven turbocharger spinning up to boost low end torque. By this time the big exhaust gas driven turbo is up to speed and boosting hard to provide the strong mid and top end power. The real trick was to make these three stages work perfectly together.” The engineers have done a wonderful job in making all this work seamlessly, and the result is excellent low speed

throttle response, eagerness to rev, and a strong and progressive flow of power accompanied by a crisp straight-six soundtrack. An i6 engine is inherently balanced where a V6 requires a balance weight on the end of its crankshaft, and the extra silkiness of the new i6 engines is palpable and deeply satisfying. Much the same can be said for the heavy oil burning S400d, which boasts an impressive 340hp at 3,600 to 4,400rpm, underpinned by a lusty 700Nm of torque between 1,200 and 3,200rpm. Its soundtrack is distinctively straight six too, but with a more baritone and gravelly undertone compared to its petrol drinking cousin.
ON A VALUE FOR MONEY BASIS, THE NEW S-CLASS REMAINS THE BEST LUXURY CAR IN THE WORLD.

The performance numbers are insane for a big diesel saloon. The 0-100km/h time of 5.4 sec was supercar territory in the 1980s, while the superior traction of the 4Matic version I drove slashes a further 0.2 sec off that. The average fuel consumption of 6.5 L/100km would do credit to a much smaller, lighter car.
This second incarnation of the W222 S-Class features the biggest technology leaps ever delivered on a mid-life S-Class facelift. All the engines are new, the telematics and driver aids take a step upwards, some bringing the car closer to autonomous driving status, while comfort levels have been finessed too. For S-Class owners who have a chauffeur to do the heavy lifting the all-important question is rear seat ride and comfort where the latest S-Class remains superior to its class rivals from Audi and BMW. In fact, unless you are an inveterate badge snob, the long wheelbase and Maybach versions of the Mercedes flagship give away nothing in ride comfort to the likes of the far more expensive Bentley and Rolls-Royce limousines either. Thus, on a value for money basis, the new S-Class remains the best luxury car in the world.

THE CROWNING OF
Rafael Nadal AT THE US OPEN 2017 By Kevin R. Jones
I
n a US Open that ended on 10th September and which was marked by some notorious absences both on the women’s draw as in the men’s -- principally with the absence of five members of the top ten -- and by other renowned players who played without being full fit physically, Rafael Nadal confirmed yet again his great form
AS HE HAS DEMONSTRATED SO MANY TIMES THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER, THE SPANIARD KNEW HOW TO TUNE UP HIS MIND AND OVERCAME THOSE CHALLENGES IN FOUR SETS. in this year of revival, and increased his status as a legend of the sport by winning his sixteenth Grand Slam, getting back to three from Roger Federer’s record. Nadal recovered the top spot in the ATP rankings for the first time in more than three years. This spot was in hands of Andy Murray who was affected by a painful hip injury that has been impairing him since the semi-finals of the French Open and kept him from the American Grand Slam. Nadal began his path through Flushing Meadows with some doubts and irregularities that made him lose the first set in consecutive matches during the second and third round (first against the Japanese Taro Daniel; then against

Leonardo Mayer of Argentina). But, as he has demonstrated so many times throughout his career, the Spaniard knew how to tune up his mind and overcame those challenges in four sets. And, he upped his game considerably during the second week with clear wins against Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov, who had given Nadal headaches in previous meetings, and the promising Russian, Andrey Rublev who was considered one of Rafa’s principal menaces in the draw. He then overcame the often irregular, but always dangerous and motivated, Juan Martin del Potro, who had beaten both Dominic Thiem and a not fully fit, Federer in a replay of the epic final of 2009 where the Argentine had shocked the world with a powerful performance gave home the winner’s cup. In 2009, Delpo had beaten Nadal easily in the semi-finals, stopping Federer and Nadal from facing each other and the same happened this year. They have never played each other in the more than 23,500 seat Arthur Ashe Stadium, the only Grand Slam venue in which the two rivals have never played a match. The 2017 semi-final between Nadal and Del Potro seemed to be a tough match, but after dropping the first set 6-4, the Spaniard jumped on the crest of the wave and finished off the hard hitting Argentine 6-0, 6-3 6-2 in successive sets, ensuring this way his return to the final of this tournament, which Rafa had previously won in 2010 and 2013. In the final Nadal faced the strong
serving Kevin Anderson, the first South African to enter a Grand Slam singles final since Kevin Curren at the 1985 Wimbledon Championships. Anderson had arrived at this stage having seized the opportunity of an open draw, due to the early eliminations of two favourites for the final: Alexander Zverev (lost to Croat Borna Coric in the second round) and Marin Cilic (injured since Wimbledon and lost in the third round against Argentine Diego Schwartzman. Cilic also beat amongst others the American Sam Querrey in the quarterfinals and Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta, who had a great tournament and hadn’t lost a set until he met Anderson in the semi-final. During the decisive stage of the game, Nadal’s pedigree, talent and experience made their weight felt and Nadal won solidly, having employed a strategy that generated pressure on the serving game of the South African. He also showed great efficiency when rushing to the net to win the points, dispatching Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
will be remembered amongst his best and, perhaps, as his most memorable ever, surpassed only by 2008 when he achieved “La Décima” in Roland Garros and two other “Decimas” in both Monte Carlo and Barcelona. This was also his last Grand Slam with his uncle Toni as his principal coach; in February he announced that after the conclusion of the current season Toni would step back to dedicate his time to his family and to train young projects at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor, Majorca. In a tournament where Djokovic, Murraym Warinka, Raonic and Nishikori were absent, Rafa demonstrated why he should never be underestimated, regardless his form in the weeks before. His records are proof enough of how dangerous Nadal is when he reaches the highest stages and in four Grand Slams his stats speak for themselves: 16-7 in finals; 23-3 in semi-finals. What an achievement for Rafa, for Mallorca and for Spain.
He put the icing on the cake of a season that
NADAL’S PEDIGREE, TALENT AND EXPERIENCE MADE THEIR WEIGHT FELT AND NADAL WON SOLIDLY, HAVING EMPLOYED A STRATEGY THAT GENERATED PRESSURE ON THE SERVING GAME OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN. 131

LEARNING THE
SPORT OF KINGS IN SOTOGRANDE
M
arbella was my second home for all of my teenage years. Long weekends and holidays meant travelling from Denmark to Málaga and then strolling through Puerto Banús and getting a tan on the beach by Rio Verde. When my mother eventually moved to Fort Lauderdale, I didn’t come back to the south of Spain for many years. Then in my late 20s I was drawn back, though this time not just for the beaches and sunshine, but because I had discovered polo, the magnificent Sport of Kings, and Sotogrande in August is one of the best places to watch it.
Polo’s travels through time The history of polo is said to have started in ancient Persia around year 2500 BC, but as a very different game to that we know today. It was a military exercise

to prepare warriors for battle, with the enemies’ heads used as the ball. The sport trickled through Asia and into India where in the 19th century the British cavalry took hold of it, for the same purpose as the ancient Persian warriors and used it as a fun way of training soldiers and horses. The first polo club in Spain was the Jerez Polo Club founded in 1872, whilst the Santa Maria Polo Club in Sotogrande was built almost a century later in 1965. I first discovered polo in 2010 in what is considered today the ‘cathedral’ of polo, Las Canchas de Palermo in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I witnessed the polo greats on the number one polo field in the world, and I could not get enough of this fast-paced game of thundering hooves.
Polo has a reputation of being only for the elite and watching polo often involves champagne and elegant lunches. Whilst this is in some way true, polo can also be very low-key and relaxed. The true essence of polo goes far beyond what is seen at the surface; it is about the connection with the horses, your team mates and the sport.
From the sidelines to the ponylines After years of watching in awe from the sidelines, it was finally time to try it out myself. Though not even having learnt how to ride a horse, it was quite a challenging goal! I booked a lesson and gave it a go. Just as I imagined, my polo passion grew stronger. From the moment I was on the horse and I swung my mallet and hit the ball, I was absolutely hooked. Even though I was standing still and the

From that moment on, my polo passion became so much more fun; I was living it! I started to learn more about riding and swing techniques, which allowed me to hit the ball whilst the horse was walking and I even cantered around the polo field on one of my first lessons. That was truly a spectacular moment, which I will never forget. I was scared and a little anxious; I felt very high up and now the horse was moving fast and the polo field was very large and very open. Scary thoughts went through my head, but they all disappeared as the wind blew on my face and through my hair. I stopped thinking and just felt, letting my body do what felt natural. My legs tightened slightly around the horse’s belly, which made it go a little faster. My breathing was quick, I slowed it down and relaxed my arms and my shoulders, Diana's first Polo lesson
Polo Valley - A Polo Dream
After some very inconsistent months of learning in different places around the world I finally found my polo paradise - Polo Valley in Sotogrande. When I arrived at the beautiful location, I got that warm feeling of peace and joy, and I felt like I had arrived home. After talking to the owner and the polo manager I quickly understood why this place was so special. It was built with the same passion for polo that I also felt in my core. It was built with the exact purpose of teaching absolute beginners, of spreading the polo love and growing the international polo family. My first lesson at Polo Valley felt like it was my first polo lesson ever, I didn’t feel confident at all. I hadn’t been riding for a while and felt unsure. Then I met my pony, Nevadita, the sweetest grey mare with the most gentle temper. I said hello to her, nuzzling her nose, and a reassuring nuzzle back put me at ease and up I went. That is the thing with horses, they have so much personality and can have terrible temperaments, but not these ones. All the Polo Valley horses have been carefully chosen, and the first thing the horse rider looks for in a horse is good temperament. If the horse is calm and level headed, the rider can teach it anything. So naturally these are the kind of ponies that live at Polo Valley: the steady and easy type, the type that will teach a novice the thrill and enjoyment of polo with confidence. Within a week at Polo Valley I felt like a true polo player and I was! I was playing matches with other players who had been riding for far longer than I had. I was scoring goals, I was steering my horse whilst tactically positioning myself, aiming for the ball, setting my mallet up high, swinging and hitting the ball right in the sweet spot, which makes such a wonderful clack. This summer I based myself in the beautiful Sotogrande area, to soak up all the high goal polo activity whilst continuing my quest of learning to play polo. Most afternoons I can be found on the field or around the barns at Polo Valley. Come join me and try it out; if I can learn to play polo, anyone can! The English
“ Matyr of Málaga” I
n his “English travellers abroad, 1604 – 1667”, Stoye wrote: “Quite a colony of Englishmen greeted the first English fleet to enter the Mediterranean, at Málaga”. This was in 1621, when Sir Robert Mansell was attacking the pirate stronghold of Algiers. Under King James I England and Spain had become allies. With memories of the Tudor enmity, the Spanish were still a trifle uncertain regarding this new Stuart state of affairs, and when Sir Robert arrived during the night his “suddaine comming yeelded no small feare to the affrighted Towne, mistaking them for Turkes, for the two Castle-bells Ringing backe-ward, the thundering Drums resounding, & the Towne all the latter night in armes”. Women and children were hurried to the shelter of the Gibralfaro, whose defences had recently been strengthened. As daylight broke, explanations were given, Sir Robert and the Governor

134
exchanged pleasantries, and order was restored. Before this incident, Málaga had already played host to several stray Englishmen; Catholics, spies, sailors, merchants in wine and raisins. As the sailors from Sir Robert’s fleet disembarked for a stroll around the town they encountered an errant Englishman by the name of William Lithgow; soon to become “The Martyr of Málaga”. Lithgow was a prickly Protestant traveller who disapproved of all things Spanish, especially Catholicism. Bearing a travel warrant from King James, he was on a mission to disseminate Protestantism to the East, and frequently failed to keep his religious opinions to himself. He had arrived in Málaga from Antequera in the company of an English merchant from Venice, who arranged for his passage to Egypt in a French ship. When Sir Robert’s fleet arrived, however, he reported “That afternoone, and the day following, being a Satturday, there came hundreds ashoare of my specialle friends, and olde familiars, Londoners and Courtiers, with whom desirously met, we were joviall together, till Sunday morning, where then I went aboard of the Lyon, his Majesties ship, and saluted the Generall”. Sir Robert offered him a passage to Algiers,
but as he was on the point of sailing, Lithgow, not having his baggage with him, was unable to accept. On his way back to his lodgings he was set upon by the town guard and taken off to the Governor’s house. A Spanish treasure fleet was expected at Sevilla, and Lithgow was suspected of having passed on this information to Sir Robert who, it was feared, might abandon the Algerian pirates in favour of an attack upon the fleet. Old suspicions die hard! The Governor refused to allow Lithgow to contact any of the English merchants in Málaga, but did permit him to send for his “clogbag”. When this was examined it was found to contain “divers Patents, Seales and the great Seale of Jerusalem & my Booke of Armes, called Liber amicorum, wherin I had the hand-writs, & Armes of sundry Kings, Dukes, Princes, ViceRoyes, Marquesses, Earles, Lords and Governors & done in Prose and Verse, in Greeke, Latine, or their maternall tongues, being as propitious pledges of their favour, in commendation of me, and of my Travailes”. He was clearly well connected, but this rather told against him and in
Spanish eyes clearly marked him as a spy. He was divested of his money, and chained “in a sequestrate side of the Palace, toward the Garden, & right above his [the Governor’s] Summer Kitchen”. After a few days of starvation he was taken to an isolated shed containing a wine press, and racked. Once all his papers had been translated, it was decided that he wasn’t a spy, but the Inquisition, still smarting from his often expressed views on Catholicism, claimed him as a heretic. Lithgow treated all their charges with contempt, and withstood their threats and mistreatment with a true martyr’s spirit. Whilst in prison he was visited by a Turkish slave who was convinced that he was indeed a spy, and was in Málaga to plot an attack on the town by Moorish pirates; “and I hope we shall be merry in Algier”, he said. Help came when a palace servant overheard the Governor recounting the story to a friend over dinner. He informed “the English Factor, Mr Richard Wilds, the chiefe English Consull” who promptly informed his Ambassador in Madrid. The Ambassador protested to the King, who ordered Lithgow’s instant release.
The unhappy eccentric sailed home aboard one of Sir Robert’s supply ships, carrying with him cash and gifts donated by the English merchants of the town. The gifts comprised “a sute of Spanish apparel, twelve Hennes, a barrell of wine, a basket full of Egges,
AFTER A FEW DAYS OF STARVATION HE WAS TAKEN TO AN ISOLATED SHED CONTAINING A WINE PRESS, AND RACKED. ONCE ALL HIS PAPERS HAD BEEN TRANSLATED, IT WAS DECIDED THAT HE WASN’T A SPY, BUT THE INQUISITION CLAIMED HIM AS A HERETIC. two roves of Figges and Raisins, two hundred Oranges and Lemmons, eight pounds of Sugar, a number of excellent good Bread”. He never saw his original cash again and, to his immense chagrin, discovered that it had helped pay for
the foundation of a Capuchin convent. His magnificent Liber amicorum vanished forever. Shortly after his return, and still weak from his mistreatment, he was “carried to Theoballs on a feather bed” to meet James I, who kindly paid his medical bills. Furthermore, in his “Totall Discourse of his Rare Adventures and Painfull Peregrinations” he drew attention to the “Witnesse all the Court of England, even from the Kings to the Kitchen, what a martyred anatomy I was”. That may be so, but the Ambassador in Madrid remained on friendly terms with the Governor in Málaga, and admitted that Lithgow was made of the stuff that spells disturbance. Lithgow subsequently proved him right. It is likely that he exaggerated his sufferings, particularly at the hands of the Inquisition, in order to claim maximum compensation. Once the novelty of his story wore off, nobody paid him much attention. When he took up the question with the Spanish Ambassador in London, his excellency also ignored him. He promptly floored the Ambassador, and was carted off to gaol. Thereafter he fades from history, but a marginal gloss in his book bears the plaintive comment: “It is miserable travelling in Spaine”.

Pack Instinct with George Gough George Gough has been training dogs on the Costa del Sol since 2013. He has completed the Training Cesar’s Way course and was personally taught by Cesar Millan, one of the most famous names in canine behaviour training. George provides assistance to dog owners whose pets need help, from severe behavioural challenges to more modest everyday struggles. He’s here to share his knowledge with Society readers and answer your questions.
Managing Separation Anxiety
I
believe dogs live in the moment and don’t hold on to the past like we do. Dogs with separation anxiety don’t have these issues because of something that happened to them in the past. People often think that their dogs do things as a result of what has happened to them in the past and the only way to get the dog past this stuff is to slowly allow them to get over it on their own. One of the biggest things that reinforces separation anxiety is letting your dog follow you around he house all day. When you leave it’s really difficult for the dog now, because he can’t follow you. The trick is to teach your dog to be mentally comfortable when you leave. Start by teaching your dog stay in a place for a period of time. Practise this when you are with your dog instead of letting them follow you around all the time. Then when it comes to you leaving your dog, it will be much easier on him because you’ve put in the work when you were home instead of just letting your dog follow you around all day.
How to stop separation anxiety: 1) Know that your dog lives in the
2) Use the ‘Place’ command. Do lots
of place command training, and make sure it is done calmly instead of excitedly. This is one of the exercises I prefer to do slowly and calmly because I want the dog to be super calm when I send him to place and not anticipating the next move or possible reward. (I train most of the other commands differently.)
3) Duration work. Start asking your dog
to stay in one place for a period of time and build it up to an hour, then possibly three or four hours. Duration work is great because you can do it while your going about your daily chores at home and the benefits to your dog mentally are huge! Think of it as being like doggie meditation.
4) Crate training. This is super important if you have a dog who not only has separation anxiety but will actually do harm to its self through eating dangerous objects, wrecking the house and trying to break out. The crate will keep your dog safe when your unable to supervise her and at bed times. (I once worked with a pit bull who would quietly
moment and doesn’t hold on to the past. Don’t focus on what has happened but what is happening and be honest with yourself about it. Dogs never come with separation anxiety, it is always reinforced and trained in some way by the owners.

eat his owner’s underwear during the night. This can kill dogs!). Like everything else, it needs to be something you practice and not something you do when you have to do it. Don’t put your dog in the crate for the first time when you leave the house; practice crate drills and duration work when you are with your dog.
Your Canine Corner George answers your questions…
Q: I’ve had conflicting advice about how to train my new puppy. I’m concerned that she will be discouraged from learning if I keep saying ‘No” to her. A: I met a few people just this week who read on the internet that they should never say no to their dog. They
read it would ruin the dog if they did anything but treat him like a prince. Claim your space. Be assertive. Let your dog know when he is doing well and more challengingly let them know when they’re not doing so well. This is balance. It has worked for you and it will work for your dog. Trust your instincts. You grew up with rules boundaries and limitations. There are consequences for your actions every day. I think we should give our dogs the same respect. They’re not as mentally fragile as some suggest. Saying no won't ruin the dog or make the dog hate you. The truth is much simpler. Your dog longs for your structure, guidance and security. And if you really think about it, it's what you knew to be true all along.
very vulnerable position. You can stop this behaviour by showing your dog every day that you are responsible for the pack and it’s not your dog’s job. The only thing "pack leader" really means is provider of protection and direction. Whatever has triggered your dog to go into protective state in the past must be re-associated with you having full control in these situations. You have to disagree with your dog’s initial reaction to protect, so you can show him that the only one who protects or needs to protect is you. There are lots of ways to show your dog that you’re in control but you have to be in a calm assertive mindset first.
Q: How do I stop my dog from feeling he needs to protect me when we’re out and reacting badly to other dogs as a result?
A: When we allow
our dogs to protect us we do them a huge disservice and put them in a

This property was 40 years old and very dated before Promas started to do the new plans, distribution and designs. The owner purchased it 15 years ago and although it was very large at 450m², it only had 4 bedrooms and only two of these had en suite bathrooms. There was a lot of wasted space and it was damp! Now the property is a stunning luxurious home with seven bedrooms, all ensuite, and a cloak room for visitors. It has a spacious kitchen and open plan living area with bifolding doors leading onto the beautiful terrace and pool area. Now it is not just a beautiful home, the value of the property has increased by 600,000 Euros thanks to a tasteful refurbishment.

GOING GREEN
Anyone who visited Gibraltar in mid-September must have questioned their eyesight when the famous Moorish Castle appeared to have taken on a ghostly green tinge. However, this wasn’t due to some supernatural visitation but to Gibraltar’s participation in a project to raise awareness of mitochondrial diseases. Since it has been 55 years since the first diagnosis of mitochondrial disease it was decided that 55 monuments around the world would be lit in green to mark this momentous anniversary. It is estimated that approximately one in 4,000 people are affected by issues related to mitochondrial disease, which can have serious consequences for health and longevity.

CRUSHING NEWS FOR MARBELLA CARS
Marbella residents, and those in other areas of the coast, are used to encountering abandoned cars on a regular basis. They are an eyesore and within a matter of days are stripped down to an almost metal skeleton state. Now, Marbella Town Hall is launching a new scheme to remove and crush these vehicles. They are putting a fast track process in place to remove the cars, which they say will also save costs, as currently around 100 vehicles are in ‘custody’ while police try to track their owners. The new procedure means that any vehicle that hasn’t be moved within a month will be destroyed. So, be careful where you leave your car, and don’t go off on a 30-day trip without making sure it is parked securely, or you could come back to receive a crushing blow.
SISU IS ALL PLAYED OUT
Angeles Muñoz has revoked the Sisu hotel’s music licence. The hotel, which is famous for its champagne pool parties and for its celebrity and TOWIE fans will not be able to post the extravagant, and clearly noisy, pool parties that made it a profitable business. There have been at least 700 complaints filed against the hotel in recent years, and whilst this didn’t result in any action against the hotel, the release of CCTV footage showing an attack where a masked man set fire to the hotel and threw in a grenade for good measure. The move to remove “loutish tourism” from Marbella and Puerto Banús has been welcomed by the local business community and the new Mayor has promised an increased police presence, especially in the Port, to ensure it has a cleaner and more respectable image for the future.
