PUBLISHER’S LETTER

J

une is probably the most popular month in the Society office: long days, gorgeous weather and the

beginning of the party season. What’s not to like? This month we celebrate the beginning of summer with the multi-talented Paloma Faith, whose unique approach has resulted in successes in both the music and film world, with platinum selling albums and roles in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and St. Trinian’s. Her quirky fashion style might not be to everyone’s taste, but it has certainly helped to mark her out as a true British – albeit half-Spanish - original. May we nominate Spain as one of the best places in the world to enjoy a proper cup of coffee? Before the domination of chains such as Costa Coffee and Starbucks, a steaming cup of coffee acted as a sort of social glue

and has a long and fascinating history. We also examine the important role that oranges and lemons have played in Spanish cuisine. One piece of excellent news to hit the Coast is the launch of La Sala’s new Local Loyalty Cards. This new initiative allows holders free entry to Aqwa Mist and amazing discounts, which means that these popular venues will be even more in demand this season. Society Marbella published by

We can also recommend some superb restaurants that are ideal for a relaxing summer evening. Try them out and we can guarantee that you will have a fabulous time.

_Beauty a concept of culture or a universal truth?

3

Beauty is a concept reflected in almost every aspect of modern life, in all cultures and societies. How we define beauty also defines the way we experience art, music and nature, and truthfully, it is part of the powerful, unconscious force that defines human relations, creating attraction or driving us apart. But can we define beauty? Can we measure it? Can we comprehensively understand it? And more importantly, can we recreate it?

2

1

1 -1

-2

2

When we look beyond the pure, blinding surface of beauty, patterns of form, shape and symmetry emerge, patterns which are universal, not a mere concept of human culture. We find the same patterns repeated in endless variation in most of the things the human being, regardless of his cultural background, considers beautiful, e.g. the perfect vortex of a nautilus shell or the flawless movement of the hummingbird’s wing, and they are all described by repeating mathematical variations of the golden ratio. Our concept here at Ocean Clinic is to understand those patterns that lay beyond all beauty, by using science and art, that’s why our clinic slogan “Beyond Beauty” was chosen. Plastic and aesthetic surgery is a symbiosis of science and art; art when it comes to seeing, creating and combining these patterns to achieve beauty, science when comes to performing in a medical environment with great skill, maximum safety and minimal discomfort for our patients.

Bares her Soul

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

This month SOCIETY MARBELLA showcases Paloma Faith

B

orn in Hackney, Paloma Faith Blomfield was raised by her mother from the age of four when her parents divorced. Encouraged to pursue dancing when she was young, her mother took her to weekly ballet classes in Dalston where she showed talent from an early age and always stood out amongst her peers. This continued as she grew up, inspiring her to study for a degree in contemporary dance at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. Completing this, she prolonged her studies by doing an MA in theatre directing at Central Saint Martins in London. To fund her studies, Paloma took on many interesting jobs including a sales assistant at Agent Provocateur, a burlesque cabaret singer, a life model and a magician’s assistant. She first started showing an interest in singing during the time she was at university and began performing with a band at the pub where she worked. The band, called Paloma and the Penetrators, were scouted by an A&R scout from Epic Records who asked Paloma to perform to the label’s manager. She was more than happy to perform for him but just 20 minutes into the audition, Faith walked out after the manager refused to turn his phone off when she asked him to. The A&R scout knew Faith was going to be something special and kept one eye on her MySpace page – after hearing her sing Broken Doll, she told Epic Managing Director Nick Raphael that they should get Paloma back in. In an interview much later, Faith

20

revealed that she received a call from the Managing Director who told her he had not seen an act as memorable as her and then offered her a contract. Around the same time Faith began working with producer Peanut, mimicking famous soul and jazz singers in the studio, including Etta James and Billie Holiday. It was Peanut who tipped off Faith’s now managers Jamie Binns and Christian Wahlberg from Lateral Management in 2007 after he was impressed with her vocals. Binns met with Paloma and although he wasn’t sure where her career was headed, he told Wahlberg that they had to do something with her and that he was completely blown away when meeting her.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

Faith, however, had other ideas and although she did want a manager, she wanted to be sure she was with the right people and insisted they build their relationship for six months before signing any contracts. Luckily the pair could see her talent and were prepared to help her with the A&R process, guiding and advising her for those six months. It was in the middle of 2009 that Faith released her debut single Stone Cold Sober which peaked at number 17 in the UK Singles Chart with the second single New York reaching number 15 in the October of that year. The album Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful? originally went into the charts at number 14 but peaked at number 9, remaining in the charts for 16 weeks. Faith wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album which was recorded completely in the UK and toured the UK and Ireland with the album in March 2010. The tour was a huge success with The Times describing it as “theatrical… and based on the rocksolid foundation of Faith’s sensational singing voice and a personality that sparkled like a rough diamond.” As her stardom began to grow, she made numerous appearances on

television with guest spots on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and Later with Jools Holland. Faith’s next single, the final one from her debut album, entitled Smoke and Mirrors was released in October 2010 but did not do well in the charts at all and it was around this time that Faith hinted in an interview that although she was working on a new album, if it didn’t do well then she would be dropped by her label. Nominated for British Female Solo Artist at the 2011 BRIT Awards cemented her status as a respected musician and she performed at the BRITs alongside Cee Lo Green singing his hit Forget You. It took Faith a while to write and record her second album, and she revealed in February 2012 that it would be called Fall to Grace and would be released in May of that year by RCA Records. She described the album as a personal record, about a specific period in her life. The album reached the number 2 spot in the UK Album Chart and the album’s first single Picking Up the Pieces debuted at number 7, making it her highest charting single so far. The second single on the album was released in July of that year but it was

“In an era where authenticity resonates, Paloma is the epitome of soul”. - L.A. Reid her third single, a version of INXS’s Never Tear Us Apart that became known in almost every household in the UK as it was used for a John Lewis advert that first aired in September 2012. Fall to Grace was certified as Platinum in the UK and Paloma received two nominations for the 2013 BRIT Awards from it; for Best Female and Best British Album. It was also in 2012 that the CEO of Epic Records in the United States, L.A. Reid, announced that he had signed Faith to the label, with Reid commenting “In an era where authenticity resonates, Paloma is the epitome of soul”. Aside from music, Paloma has also starred on screen both big and small – in televisions shows such as HolbyBlue in 2007, as well as big screen productions including St. Trinian’s and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus alongside Heath Ledger, Lily Cole, Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell. Faith is currently writing her third studio album while she spends more time in New York working with Epic Records which will hopefully be released at the end of this year or the beginning of 2014.

Society Marbella brings you all the gossip and glamour straight from Hollywood

Beyoncé has denied recent rumours that she is expecting her second child with husband Jay-Z. The rumours started circulating regarding the pop-star when she cancelled a performance of her Mrs Carter World Tour suddenly in Antwerp citing exhaustion and dehydration but Beyoncé put paid to the online rumours just three days later when she continued her tour putting on her usual energetic and soulful performance in skin-tight costumes. Watch this space for pregnancy news in a few months… Football fans across the world were in mourning last month when superstar David Beckham announced he would be retiring from the sport. Although the star is now assumed to make even more money from the Beckham brand now that he will have more time on his hands, his peers and fans alike are sad to see him leave.

TS! CONGRA

Congratulations are in order for Coleen and

Wayne Rooney on the birth of their second son Klay Anthony Rooney, and Marvin and Rochelle Humes who welcomed their first baby, a little girl named Alaia-Mai. Both sets of parents and babies are said to be doing well.

22

It seems Kelly Rowland has more than her upcoming album to celebrate this month as she has just been confirmed, alongside Paulina Rubio, as a new judge for The X Factor USA after she was fired from the UK version. Leaving the judging panel are L.A Reid and Britney Spears, who, apparently quit after just one season after hearing some backstage whispers that Simon Cowell was going to ask her to leave the show for being too boring. Poor Britney, she never seems to catch a break!

The latest craze to sweep Hollywood’s celeb obsessed fans has taken its toll on Paris Hilton recently. The reality star is just the latest in a long line of stars who has fallen foul of celeb swatting – when emergency services are tricked into dispatching an emergency response to the home of the celebrity in question on a false report. In this case, police were contacted by a woman who they believed to be Paris, who told them that she was trapped in her bedroom with a gun-wielding maniac. Other celebrities who have been a victim to these crimes are Justin Timberlake, the Kardashian family, Selena Gomez, Russell Brand, Ryan Seacrest, Miley Cyrus and Magic Johnson. With The Bling Ring, a film about a group of teenagers who stole from celebrities in Hollywood (when they stupidly left doors unlocked and alarms turned off) including Paris Hilton, it seems the reality star has not had the best of luck when it comes to her house.

The Bling Ring cast at Cannes Festival

After reporting on Cannes in our May issue, it seems the drama surrounding events that took place in the south of France made headlines more than the films. We all were shocked to learn of the Chopard jewellery heist that took place during the star studded week. With details that sound as if they should be in a movie rather than real life, the jewellery was placed in a safe within a hotel room which was removed during the robbery but strangely, neither the door to the room was broken nor was a key card used to enter. More Cannes drama continued the day after the robbery when a man was arrested for brandishing a grenade and firing a gun while Two A-listers making the headlines Oscar winner Christoph Waltz was beduring Cannes included Eva ing interviewed for French television. Luckily the suspect was apprehended quickly and Longoria who managed to exnormality resumed. pose herself whilst not wearing underwear and Keanu Reeves who showed a much fuller figure than that of his Matrix days.

24

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher’s

divorce has been stalled as Demi reportedly wants spousal support from her ex to the tune of several million dollars. The star who is supposedly worth at least $10 million dollars more than the Two and a Half Men star has only recently received a belated payment of about $15 million from her other famous ex Bruce Willis. Some sources say Demi is bitter regarding Ashton’s new love with actress Mila Kunis but whatever the case, it sounds like Demi should just move on!

Society Marbella brings you the best of this month’s action, horror, romance and comedy.

THE WRAP

Man of Steel Superman strikes again... After the disappointing Superman Returns, which failed to make money at the box office or impress critics, Henry Cavill and an all-star cast take on the story about the American superhero for a reboot of the original series. Cavill takes on the title role with Amy Adams featuring as his leading lady Lois Lane but many other well-known A-list names also feature including Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Laurence Fishburne and Russell Crowe. Although development of the film began in 2008, it took three years before filming began – many directors were asked or approached for the film including Guillermo del Toro, Ben Affleck and Tony Scott before Zack Snyder was hired in 2010.

26

RIPD With a dead cop who must investigate his own murder, this paranormal crime comedy is sure to be a hit. Nick Walker is a young police officer who is shot dead in the line of duty and joins a team of undead police officers who work for the Rest In Peace Department to find the man who killed him. Although the film has been slated to be too similar to Men In Black but in a more supernatural way, it does star Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, Mary-Louise Parker, and Robert Knepper. So, whether it’s similar or not, the cast should make it a film worth watching. After Earth This American science-fiction thriller joins acting superstar Will Smith with his son Jaden in a film that’s set in the future. Co-written by Will Smith and M. Night Shyamalan who also directed, the film sees the father and son team portraying General Cypher Raige and his son Kitai who live with the rest of humanity on a planet named Nova Prime after Earth was abandoned because of cataclysmic events. Joined by his son General Cypher leads the Ranger Corps, a peace keeping organisation, on a mission to Earth but as their ship hits an asteroid field, it crashes on Earth and everyone is killed except Cypher and Kitai. The pair must journey across a much changed planet crossing paths with animals who have greatly evolved and who dominate the planet, to signal for help. Their voyage is also hindered by an unstoppable alien creature, who escaped from their ship during the crash. Cast: Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Sophie Okonedo, Zoë Kravitz.

Monsters University The lovable monsters are back with this Pixar prequel set about ten years before the events of 2001’s Monsters Inc. The green, one eyed Mike Wazowski is headed for college and it’s here that he meets James ‘Sulley’ Sullivan, the large, burly, blue monster who is the complete opposite to Mike. Although they are both majoring in scaring, the pair does not get off to a good start and soon become enemies. With a rivalry starting that could ruin both of their lives, they must overcome their dislike of each other or else they will not graduate and become members of the scaring factory Monsters Inc. Voices from: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Helen Mirren, Steve Buscemi, Sean Hayes.

Stuck in Love When novelist Bill Borgen’s wife Erica leaves him for a younger man, he spends nearly three years obsessing about it and following her around when he should be working on a new book. His children, 19 year old Sam and 16 year old Rusty have also been deepy affected by their parents’ divorce. Sam would rather protect herself from love and have a one night stand than let her classmate initiate a relationship with her and refuses to speak to her mother. Rusty is a classic romantic who comes to the rescue of Kate, his secret crush, when she fights with her boyfriend. He becomes so blinded by his love for Kate that Rusty fails to see how troubled she is. When Erica reaches out to Sam, the family must go over old and new wounds but as Kate spins out of control the family must put aside their conflicts to help her. Cast: Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Connelly, Lily Collins

Introducing SOCIETY MARBELLA’s favourite tracks set to hit the charts this month.

THE SPIN

Long Way Down by Tom Odell This year’s BRIT’s Critics’ Choice Award winner, Tom Odell’s debut album is eagerly awaited by fans and celebrities alike. The first single on the album, Can’t Pretend, had a worldwide release in the beginning of March while the second single was also released that month. Neither song did particularly well in the UK Singles Chart but undoubtedly Tom’s most famous song, Another Love, also features on the album and has not yet been released so it’s likely that this will be what makes him a chart topper. Tom is undertaking two tours to promote the album – the first mini-tour has already taken place in March but the bigger tour will be in August. Odell will also be the opening act for Jake Bugg on his November tour and will support The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park in July. 13 by Black Sabbath 13 is the upcoming studio album to be released from British heavy metal rock band Black Sabbath – their first of the 21st century and their 19th album overall. It also reunites the band with their original singer Ozzy Osbourne who hasn’t recorded a studio album since 1978 and bassist Geezer Butler, who has not been part of the band since 1994. The band first began work on the album in 2001 but was delayed when members of the group wanted to pursue other projects but when they announced their reunion in 2011, the recording sessions were booked. The first single was released in April and the band members have announced they will appear on the season finale of Crime Scene Investigation.

Talk a Good Game by Kelly Rowland Former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland is releasing her fourth studio album in June and will see the singer return to her R&B roots. Collaborating with many songwriters, producers and other singers on the album including Beyoncé, Michelle Williams and Pharrell Williams, the first single Ice features Lil Wayne and was released last year while the second single came out in February of this year. The album has been dedicated by Rowland to all her ‘ladies’ (female fans) and has cited Whitney Houston, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder as her inspiration for the album. Although it has been described as Rowland’s best album yet, the first two singles have not made a huge splash in the charts.

28

Invisible Empire / Crescent Moon by KT Tunstall The British singer and songwriter KT Tunstall releases her fourth studio album this month and features more of a country sound than her previous music. The first single from the album will be released in the same week as the album, all of which was recorded in Tuscon, Arizona. The album was recorded in two parts leading each part to have a distinctly different sound – KT has explained in recent interviews promoting the album that it is because the first side is about dealing and coping with mortality after she lost her father in 2012, while the second side ‘evokes an ethereal mood’ and has a more inwardly reflective feel as it was recorded following the separation from her husband of four years.

Anthem by Hanson For those who were into pop music in the late 1990’s (actually anyone who listened to the radio around that time), Hanson will always be remembered for their hit MMMBop which was nominated for two Grammys! Their latest album Anthem is in fact their ninth studio album to be released and the fourth under their own label, 3CG Records. The pop rock group released the first single Get the Girl Back in April and the band will be taking the album on an American tour. 2013 marks the 20th year for the band so it’s not surprising that they have sold over 16 million albums worldwide. This album takes inspiration from James Brown and the early years of Michael Jackson with a more guitar driven sound than previous records.

In clearly difficult economic times, with the insurance sector decreasing for the fourth consecutive year, Línea Directa Aseguradora has closed 2012 with the highest profit levels in its history: 121.5 million euros before tax, representing an increase of 13% on the previous year. There have been three main reasons

for this: the sharp rise in the number of customers, effective underwriting risk management and the improvement of all the company’s processes and services, which have enabled it to reduce expenses without diminishing the scope of the cover offered.

As a result, the total number of policies, which since last February has exceeded two million, rose by over 105,000 last year, mainly thanks to the Home Insurance Area, which in the 5 years since it was launched, now has over 230,000 policies without having resorted to mergers or acquisitions.

The International Area, a strategic business Línea Directa offers its foreign policyholders living in Spain all its services in English and German. As a result, purchasing the policy, making enquiries, dealing with accidents, sending documentation and 24-hour road assistance can all be carried out

both in English and German, at a time which suits the policyholder and with only one phone call. In addition, Línea Directa’s International Area offers its policyholders a translation service which they can use for dealing with repairers.

The International Area is a key strategic factor for Línea Directa, through which the company offers its foreign customers totally exclusive services, discounts and offers.

A message in a bottle

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Classique fragrance, Jean Paul Gaultier has designed a unique bottle, named Belle en Corse. A limited edition, inspired in part by the late Amy Winehouse, it echoes Gaultier’s Haute Couture SS 13 tribute to the singer and is a fragrant blend of Orange Blossom, Vanilla, Rose and Amber. I cannot believe that two decades ago I was frantically queuing to get my hands on the shocking body shaped bottle with full curves strapped into a metal corset. At school I would continually flick my hair, wafting the scent in the direction of the boys, so they would ask what I was wearing. “Gaultier, of course!” would be my haughty reply. Cringe. I’d love to know what memories Classique evokes for you, dear readers and which is your favourite design and why.

THE CUTTING EDGE

B Y WO O D H A I R D R E S S I N G

Sanne Simonis wanted a major change, so she turned to the pros at Wood Hairdressing Salon to change her long, limp locks from drab to fab.

Y

ou’re itching to get out of your hair rut -- same colour, same cut for years -- and into a dramatic new do. However, hair makeovers need to be given a lot of thought. This is because while good hair makeovers can make you feel a million dollars, a bad one can potentially seriously damage your confidence. If you are thinking about an extreme style change, it is always best to bring in the experts. “I was looking for a colour to liven up my fair skin and a hair cut that was fun and flirty,” explained Sanne. “Arming myself with an image of Frankie Sandford from the girl group, The Saturdays, I booked myself in to Wood Salon in Marbella as I knew I would be in safe hands.”

THE CUT

Sanne envied Frankie’s adorable cropped do and Zoe Woods, head technician and owner of Wood Salon, was prepared for the challenge.

Before

“I love it when women are open to experimentation,” said colour specialist Zoe. “But I want the risks to be well-calculated. Bring photos to show your stylist what look you are after, but have realistic expectations. You may not suit an exact replica of your chosen celebrity style, but a good hair technician should be able to adapt it to work for you.”

Zoe created a graduated Vidal Sassoon inspired asymmetrical side-swept pixie crop, which is the perfect style to frame Sanne’s features beautifully. The concept was to be creative with the task while ensuring that the resulting look is durable and easy to maintain.

After

THE COLOUR

“The colour was a big job, as Sanne had previously home-dyed her hair dark brown. So, I really had my work cut out to achieve the multi-tonal hair hue I was after. If you are not a colour specialist, this kind of colour work could be a disaster - think yellow roots and orange ends.

Short hair removes obvious femininity and replaces it with style.

34

Using Redken colour I lifted Sanne’s base with a high lift tint and then added a combination of fine blonde highlights through the back for a natural look, and chunkier sections at the front to add texture, with colour blended through the sides. It was important that the colour moved with the cut.”

THE RESULT

“I could not be more pleased with my extreme makeover,” grinned Sanne. “The best part of it for me is how a change like this makes me feel – I feel so rejuvenated, confident, almost new! I love that this style is so low maintenance; when I blow dry it, it just falls into place and I never get bored with it, as I can still rock it different ways. One thing I have noticed is that more people are talking to me now, so the saying ‘blondes have more fun’ is definitely true.” Hair and makeup by Wood Salon Wood Salon Tel: + 34 952 771 791/ +34 645 089 399 woodhairdressing.com

LOOKING YOUNGER THIS SUMMER

HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER

We all want it: fewer wrinkles, a more youthful face, quick recovery time and all at a reasonable price; wishful thinking? Maybe not. The renowned Marbella Vein and Beauty Clinic has now added Endymed Radiofrequency Skin Tightening to their ever expanding list of non-surgical, physicianadministered aesthetic treatments. This procedure offers amazing results, less downtime and a smaller price tag. Sometimes wishes can come true.

D

r. Francis M. Dhobb is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon who has in-depth training and extensive experience in treating vascular disease via all aspects of endo-vascular surgery and open operative techniques. Always wanting to stay ahead of the game, he has added a new string to his bow: “Having treated thousands of patients with vascular problems, improving their comfort as well as the aesthetics of their legs, hands and face, it became obvious that a more complete approach could increase the satisfaction of our patients,” he states. “After completing my Masters in Aesthetic Medicine, I decided to add non-invasive cosmetic treatments to the list of services that our clinic offers, as our patients are accustomed to these being globally available.”

State-of-the-art technologies used in aesthetic medicine are constantly being improved, making yesterday’s equipment and innovations yesterday’s news. “In order to compete at the highest level, I always invest in the latest technology. You will find only the best equipment at my clinic, the Endymed Pro 3 Deep Radio Frequency system and the Alma Laser Harmony platform being the latest additions. The EndyMed will be particularly popular this summer as, unlike most radio frequency treatments, it allows the patient to head straight out into the sun. This is not a ‘winter only’ procedure; Endymed is the perfect summer cocktail, where you can enjoy a beautiful glow all summer long,” Dr Dhobb adds with a smile.

NO SCALPEL NEEDED

Ideal for skin that has lost its spring, it is a simple, quick and painless procedure, which provides excellent results for body contouring and facial skin tightening. All RF treatments work by delivering radio frequency energy to heat the sub-surface layers of the skin in order to cause collagen contraction and remodelling, resulting in tighter, younger looking skin. But, because EndyMed uses an advanced, multisource, phase-controlled technology, this newest radio frequency treatment can deliver energy more safely and precisely for maximum effectiveness with no patient discomfort.

After a consultation with Dr Dhobb, an aesthetic facial and corporal diagnosis is undertaken, with treatments being adjusted to suit the needs of each patient. All solutions embrace his philosophy of being minimally invasive with maximum results, allowing the patient an immediate return to daily routine. Dr. Dhobb’s ultimate aim is the maintenance of a natural and harmonious visage and, with this in mind, he uses the least invasive corporal and facial treatments which, skillfully applied, allow him to obtain wonderful results. “Our treatments can improve the appearance of frown lines, sunken cheeks, uneven lips, tired eyes and even acne scars. Many go hand-in-hand, meaning I can create bespoke treatments for each client. We offer Botox, Mesotherapy, Laser and a wide range of fillers. For the latter we use mainly hyaluronic acid, because of its compatibility with the human body. Using the blunt-tip micro-cannula as an alternative to the hypodermic needles has simplified filler injections and produced less bruising, echymosis and pain with faster recovery, also allowing for a more even distribution of products.” Dr. Dhobb has performed thousands of complex procedures and his expertise encourages even the most nervous patient to feel safe in his hands.

36

WHAT MAKES 3DEEP STAND OUT?

THE PERFECT DERRIERE

EndyMed is also an excellent, non-invasive option to improve body contours, reduce cellulite and promote skin tightening in many areas, including the waist, abdomen, hips, thighs and buttocks. The latter has proved particularly popular. With bikini season in full swing, and women demanding derrieres like Kim Kardashian and Pippa Middleton, EndyMed offers the world’s first non-surgical bum lift. The intense frequencies immediately tighten the skin, raising the behind by up to an inch. The treatment also produces new collagen in the skin, giving the bottom a smoother appearance and promotes a long-lasting effect.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING TREATMENT?

Dr Dhobb explains. “The treatment is performed in our clinic, with patients able to return home and resume normal activities immediately after treatment. During the procedure, the EndyMed handpiece is moved across the treatment area to gradually and safely heat the deep skin layers. Treatment typically takes about 30-45 minutes, depending on the size of the area to be treated. The procedure is completely comfortable and relaxing. The ‘glow’ is immediately noticeable. However, in order to achieve the best results, a series of treatments is usually recommended.”

THE FRACTIONAL RADIO FREQUENCY

“The unique thing about Endymed Pro fractional technology is that it uses radio frequency for fractional rejuvenation, so it’s not colour sensitive,” explains Dr Dhobb, “It can be used on any skin type from very light to dark skin. The FSR can increase skin tone and correct imperfections, either on the face or the body. It also gives a glow to the skin, smooths wrinkles, corrects hyper-pigmentation, closes skin pores, corrects scars and treats stretch marks.” With the help of the Marbella Vein and Beauty Clinic you can reduce wrinkles and tighten skin anywhere on your body. R

ecently voted the world’s most beautiful woman by People magazine, 40-year old Gwyneth Paltrow has admitted that it’s taken plenty of hard work to get herself into the best shape of her life. “I work out five days a week with Tracey Anderson (the well-known Personal Trainer of the rich and famous). I’ve made it such a habit, it’s like brushing my teeth”. But even the Hollywood actress has the odd bad day with her Trainer, with the mum-of-two admitting that some days she really doesn’t want to get her sweat on. “A lot of days I don’t want to do it but I literally force myself, it’s sheer will. I just force myself to make it a part of my day and I try not to even listen to the doubts.” The hard work’s paying off! The megastar recently admitted that she has the “butt of a 22 year old stripper” after years of believing it was the one thing she was never going to able to change. To lift and tone her bottom, The Oscarwinner worked with her trainer to establish a suitable workout regime, which included reducing the running and spinning and doing more back and side leg lifts that require flexing the glutes. A tailored approach worked well for Paltrow. “It did such wonders for my life, my confidence, my sex life…everything”. The key to a great butt is to work your glutes and hamstrings. Most of us are spending more and more of our time sitting down - whether it’s in front of a PC or a plasma TV. The impact of too much chair time is that our hip muscles and our glutes become weak, disrupting the muscular

balance of your body, which can cause all sorts of niggles and injuries in the knees, hips and lower back. Your “Gluteus Maximus” creates the shape of your rear end. It’s working anytime you raise your thigh out to your side, rotate your leg so your foot is pointing outward, or when you thrust your hips forward. So if you are sitting in a squat position, your gluteus maximus helps you stand up by strengthening your hips. The best exercises include the deadlift, hip raise and reverse hip raise. Good luck!

La Piece de Resistance I

nterior design and architecture are about the planning of space and achieving the concept and décor that you love and feel well in. Furthermore, detail is the vital component for creating a well-rounded and unique design that interprets who you are. This month I’d like to put emphasis on pieces that are dear to you, that speak to you, that breathe passion, that create impact, that piece that you love. La piece de resistance.

This can range from an oversized sculpture to a small accessory. Of course if you have a room that is designed in a simple plain way, then finding the right accessories at the end can make a big difference to the entire look. Sometimes by simply adding a flower arrangement you can make a design feel complete. You should always find a piece that you love and that really stands out, and then work around this item.

First of all I would like to introduce one of our local artists, who also shares my philosophy about detail. His work is stunning and speaks for itself...

Messeg Design During the sculpting process the element of fire is Messeg’s primary tool. This powerful force of creation provides him with a deep connection to nature and life itself. The observation of burning flames, sparks and galactic activity draws him to the extraordinary almost celestial dimension of this work with its potential for fantasy and escape. Each sculpture gradually takes on a life of its own and develops its own personality making it impossible to create two pieces the same. Nimrod says “The reason why I focus my artistic work around female torsos is because I have always found my biggest inspiration in nature. There are round, soft, feminine shapes as well as missing pieces, who first of all give you space for your own imagination and a sense of imperfection which for me really is what beauty is all about.” The intricacy and detail behind his work is truly mind blowing. messegdesign.com

Artwork is also a great way to make a statement! It will captivate each viewer in a different way, whether it be through its vibrant colour, a story, detail, the beauty, the abstract. It will bring out different emotions and reactions. That’s the beauty of art, it’s personal and should definitely speak to you. ambiencehomedesign.com

By choosing the right place for your décor item you will make it stand out even more. It doesn’t have to be something crazy or super different, but if you give it the right attention, you will get the effect you are looking for, and it can be very special. When putting various accessories in one place, try to think about heights, distances between them, and finishes, so that the one you want to draw attention to will shine. If you haven’t yet found that special piece, I do hope that you will go out and find it! Be creative, bold and dare to be different!

Michèle Lehmann was born in Switzerland, but she has lived and worked

in Mijas for more than 30 years. She began with pencil drawings that evolved into great complexity, taking weeks to finish. She now produces oils carefully built in layers of glaze, which have won prizes over Spain and are shown in galleries in several countries.

Elena Ubeda is a Basque artist who currently divides her time between Granada and Marbella, maintaining a studio in Puerto Banús. Elena has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country and a PhD in Painting from the University of Granada. Her fun designs incorporate photography, decoupage and painting and are beautifully constructed. Merab Gagiladze, was born in Tbilisi Georgia. His art reflects a neo-

RAINING MEN San Pedro’s popular Umami restaurant was taken over by 60 women hoping that it would soon be ‘Raining Men’. In fact this was an event organised by Lisa Marie Robinson in the hope that Costa Women could raise much needed funds for the Spanish charity, Bancosol, which assists many financially deprived families by providing them with free food. An array of male talent included singers Sam Oliver, Frank Skott, Chris Kallis and Dru Chapman and personal trainer, Giorgio Torelli, was also on hand to entertain the ladies by flexing his oiled muscles. As an added inducement, Umami provided some wonderful food. This sold out event raised 1200€ in total, with half going to Bancosol, whose tireless workers were ecstatic, reporting that no one had ever provided this much support in a single event. They informed the members of Costa Women that, with this money they can provide 10.000 kg of food to needy families.

TORQUE TALK

Our in-depth motoring review

68

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the Bentley GT Speed. 69

TORQUE TALK

I

t is a fact that all supercars are a compromise. Sleek and low, they usually come with impracticality and occupant discomfort as a given. Most of them are also only rear-wheeldrive, a liability in bad weather where their wide rubber and poor visibility also become even more of a handicap. These were all issues I considered from the cosseting interior of Bentley’s second generation GT Speed, which kept me warm, dry and cosy as a heavy rainstorm battered the normally sunny Cote d’Azur outside. I do not like rain in general, but I especially resent it when I have to test a powerful car, even one with all-wheeldrive. In this case however, the foul weather revealed a positive side of the Bentley GT Speed’s character and capabilities I had not previously seen.

70

As other cars pussyfooted around on the sodden surface, the permanent four-wheel-drive system perfectly distributed the Bentley’s massive power and torque to the tarmac. The GT Speed’s peerless traction and 2,320kg mass was very reassuring in these awful conditions, and I quickly felt there was no other car I would rather be in at this time. This strong first impression was further bolstered up in the hills, away from the built-up coastal area. On near empty roads, I began to pick up the pace, and as the route became ever more twisty, the extent of the Bentley’s towering abilities on wet tarmac became even more apparent.

Using the full power of the massive engine to sprint between bends soon felt totally natural, with no wheel spin or any histrionics at all as the 625 horses were effectively distributed though all four wheels. I always felt that the standard GT was supremely competent but a bit aloof. Firmer settings for its air suspension, harder bushes and uprated anti-roll bars, make the GT Speed feel more connected to the driver, delivering more involvement without detracting from overall comfort.

TORQUE TALK

... I quickly felt there was no other car I would rather be in at this time. What this means is that when you are pressing on along a twisty road, so long as you take the car’s size and weight into consideration, making clean and measured course adjustments, the GT Speed feels remarkably easy to drive quickly. It is a truly effortless point-topoint machine. With the Torsen centre differential now delivering a handling biased 40/60 percent front/rear power distribution, understeer is minimised and the car belies the fact that it has a heavy W12 motor in its nose. Turning in to a bend, the power steering conveyed the fact that it is in perfect tune with the chassis. The current big debate over electric power assisted steering not being as good as the best hydraulic systems rages on. Amidst this pseudo intellectual scrum, the Bentley’s speed sensitive hydraulic system stands out for being spot on with the chassis it commands in turn-in rate, weight and feedback. Even the size and feel of the steering wheel has been well considered to deliver a fine overall heft.

You can feel the effect of this even more easily on a slippery road, the extra power being shunted to the rear helping to reduce understeer on the way into bends, and delivering a better overall handling balance. As the rev counter needle arced towards the red line in the intermediate ratios, the new close ratio eight-speed ZF automatic provided seamless up and downshifts. Rapid ones too, when you are in Sport mode. You can either choose a higher or lower gear with the touch of a paddle shifter, or leave the slick gearbox to its own devices.

71

TORQUE TALK Torque is always the key to effortless progress, or ‘waftability’ as Bentley would say. With 5,998cc of W12 motor further enhanced by a pair of big turbochargers and an ECU map similar to the even more powerful 640hp Supersports version, the big numbers are 626hp at 6,000rpm with a whopping 800Nm of torque at just 1,700rpm. This is 100Nm more than the normal GT, and because torque gives you acceleration, and horsepower gives you top speed, this extra twist makes more difference to the car’s performance in everyday driving than the extra 50hp at the top end. Thus, the GT Speed feels like a muscle car, but a super refined one. Imagine if you will, a world-class athlete swathed in the finest garments by an haute couture tailor, and you have the perfect analogy. It is the ultimate mailed fist in a velvet glove. Against the stopwatch, the GT Speed’s 4.2 sec 0-100km/h sprint puts it 0.3 sec ahead of the normal GT. However, the difference in intermediate gear acceleration is palpable, thanks to the closer gear ratios and the ZF automatic’s ability to block downshift, dropping straight from eighth to third gear if needs be.

72

The effect from this incisive response to kick down is dramatic, the beefy torque curve hurling this 2.3 tonne car down the road with surprising ease. The counterpoint is a 12 percent improvement in average fuel economy. Even on part throttle, the extra torque is appreciated when overtaking or simply returning to cruising speed on the autobahn after a hold-up. If you have a long stretch of autobahn, top speed goes up from 318km/h (198mph)

The GT Speed is not only better balanced than the standard GT, it is also the best of its breed. to 330km/h (205mph), making the GT Speed faster outright than many supercars. The freer flowing sports exhaust peculiar to the GT Speed delivers a more inspiring deep growl under acceleration, particularly in Sport mode. This soundtrack underpins its credentials as the fastest production Bentley ever. Yet, when you throttle back and select Comfort mode, this aural signature fades to a deep whisper, revealing the other side of the car’s character. The GT Speed wafts along with effortless comfort just as well as it charges hard when prodded, and this duality of character is something that no supercar can offer.

With that kind of speed on tap, you need very impressive stoppers, and the huge brakes behind the new 21-inch diameter alloys shod with 275/35R21 Pirelli PZero rubber, wash off momentum with reassuring ease. Those wheels, the dark tint mesh of the radiator grille and the huge, rifled exhaust tailpipes, visually distinguish the GT Speed from its less highly focused brethren. The hand-finished cabin is as welcoming an environment as ever. Unique GT Speed fittings include the Mulliner Driving Specification, which means niceties like diamond quilted leather trim, drilled pedals and a unique gear knob. You can have the GT Speed ‘engine spin’ metal dashboard trim in a dark grey tint to match the grille insert, although the more conservative might choose the normal wood trim as fitted to my test car. A pause en route gave me the chance to run my test CD through the Bentley 1,100 watt Naim audio system. Setting all the tone controls to zero, I listened to a selection of tracks from jazz to classical as well as a very dynamic drumming performance. The system

was impressive, but more importantly, foot tappingly musical. At the end of a trying journey like this, one of the ways I size a car up is by asking myself if I would be willing to get back in and do it all again. In the case of the GT Speed, the level of comfort in which I travelled, and the ease with which it covered the distance despite the weather, made for an unequivocal yes. As an everyday conveyance, the GT Speed is a practical alternative to a supercar, melding genuine 200mph performance with a driving experience while not the last word in involvement, never ceased to amaze with its overall balance and refinement. The GT Speed is not only better balanced than the standard GT, it is also the best of its breed. The Italian word ‘sprezzatura’ denotes the art of effortless superiority. In my time with the latest Bentley GT Speed, I never felt that the car was anything but effortless and superior in its deportment over any sort of road. By strict definition, the Bentley GT Speed is not a supercar, but it certainly is a super car. Car Dealer: Salamanca.

A NIGHT AT THE

Theatre Text by India Baltran Photos by JB Fort

T

he 17th century tradition of Kabuki is Japan’s most famous artistic form and is, rightly, celebrated and revered. Just as Shakespeare draws the crowds in the UK, so visitors to this fascinatingly ancient, yet über-modern country are still seduced by these unique dance-dramas. Kabuki Raw, located in the splendid surroundings of Finca Cortesín, offers as much colour and drama as any kabuki production. This extraordinary celebration of all that is best about Japanese cuisine is part of the renowned Kabuki Group, which maintains five restaurants internationally and holds a total of three Michelin stars.

Head Chef Rafael Carrasco previously worked under Ricardo Sanz, described by many as ‘the artist of Spanish-Japanese crossover cuisine’. According to Carrasco, parallels can be drawn between the two cultures because of their mutual appreciation of fish. Arriving at Finca Cortesín from his previous post in Tenerife, Carrasco confessed that the quality of the local seafood was what impressed him most. “I buy everything myself,” he states. “For instance, we get the tuna from Barbate in Cádiz and make sure that it is killed according to Japanese tradition.” Such attention to detail has clearly paid off, since Kabuki Raw delivers the ultimate dramatic dining experience. On the night that we visited, the clientele was distinctly international, although mostly English-speaking. Some were staying in Hotel Finca Cortesín, but many had chosen to drive from Sotogrande to find a discreet and exclusive place to dine. The menu (we were almost tempted to refer to it as ‘the programme’ in deference to Kabuki Raw’s theatrical roots) is imaginatively divided into four acts. The visually striking tableware, we were informed, has been imported from Japan to enhance the authenticity of the whole experience and once again revealing the attention to detail that places this restaurant in a class of its own. An experienced sommelier is also on hand to provide advice about which wines could most effectively be teamed with each course. The wine list is an international affair and includes 40 different champagnes, 25 of which are made by small producers; typically, nothing is left to chance here.

Before the main event we were offered a delicious selection of appetizers (an overture?) that admirably set the standard for what was to come. The freshness and quality of the fish was outstanding and the presentation was so imaginative that it almost seemed an act of artistic vandalism to clean our plates. The first act was a delicious Lobster Soup. According to the menu Hanamichi, as it is known in kabuki, should act both as an introduction to what is to come later and as a bridge to the second act. This might be true, but the combination of subtle flavours and freshness means that Kabuki Raw’s Lobster Soup is a star in its own right. Following this promising opening, Zidaimono unfolded in a thrilling narrative of texture and taste. Our Sashimi with Three Sauces imaginatively represented the second act of a classic Kabuki performance in which stories of the upper classes were told in a strict format with a distinct beginning, middle and end. With this emphasis on wealth and privilege it is not surprising that the sommelier recommends that this second course should be accompanied by champagne or a sparkling wine. The third act, Sewamono, also adheres to the discipline of a distinct beginning, middle and end although this was traditionally a story told about the lower classes. Money being tight meant that tuna was a regular staple, but we were presented with a more lavish combination of different cuts of Sashimi. The sommelier was able to tell us that the Japanese peasant class relied on liquid as well as solid food to provide calories, so we were able to enjoy a full-bodied red wine with this course. Finally, the Shosagoto – which translates as Party or The Last Dance – provided a final celebratory flourish courtesy of Nigiri Sushi. These exquisitely crafted pieces of edible art delighted the eye and their lightness perfectly evoked the idea of a dance. Nigiri Sushi consists of a hand-

made ball of rice covered by a canopy of raw fish and the combination of craftsmanship and the radiant strips of fish, we both agreed, was a winner. This lightness of touch and flavour was reinforced by a white wine, a less calorific alternative to the heavier red we had enjoyed with the previous course. Every superb theatrical experience should be concluded with a curtain call and ours consisted of Caramelised Banana with Coconut, Coffee Cream and Lime, the perfect ending to a culinary experience characterised by its visual appeal and freshness. Kabuki Raw does more than merely present the best of Japanese cuisine in a new and exciting way, although of course it does this admirably. Most importantly it pays homage to the traditions and art forms of that country and, in so doing, offers diners a truly contemporary dining experience. We will definitely return soon. he Prophet did not approve of wine, but the prohibition of wine was not in his programme from the beginning. In the Qur’an (sura xvi. 69) we find it initially praised “And of the fruit of palm-trees, and of grapes, ye obtain an inebriating liquor, and also good nourishment”. But the consequences of drunkenness moved Mohammed to change his attitude. The first revelation of this came in sura ii 216: “They will ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Answer, in both there is great sin…” This, however, was not a prohibition. But as people did not change their customs, a new revelation was issued; sura iv 46: “O true believers! come not to prayers when ye are drunk, until ye understand what ye say”. This did not have much effect, and so finally sura v. 92 made an end to drinking: “O true believers! surely wine and gambling and stone pillars and divining arrows, are an abomination, of the work of Satan, therefore avoid them, that ye may prosper.” However, wine was still available in Paradise: “Surely the pious will be in bliss... their thirst will be slaked with pure wine sealed.” (sura lxxxiii 22,25) And the praise of wine remained one of the favourite topics of Moslem poets (vide “The Rubaiyat” by Omar Khayyam). At the courts of Caliphs and Sultans wine was drunk as if no prohibition existed at all, as we readily see in “1001 Nights”.

the absence of wine left a problem. What to drink? The answer came from Ethiopia. But in general terms,

78

By Padre Peter

Swiftly known as ‘The wine of Islam’, coffee became widespread throughout the Arabic and Turkish world, taken strong and sweet. Avicenna (the Persian physician and philosopher, 9801037 AD) thought that it had medicinal properties, and Pietro della Valle (15861652 AD, who, in 1626 introduced the first Persian cat into Italy), wrote in his Viaggi in Turchia, Persia ed India of the “black beverage” drunk by the Turks, which he said “is consumed after the meal, as a dainty… It is also said that when drunk after supper, it prevents those who consume it from feeling sleepy. For that reason, students who wish to read into the late hours are fond of it”. Not much has changed over the centuries! Coffee first made its appearance in Europe in 1636, when a ship unloaded a consignment of beans at Marseilles, but its general use had to wait until 1669 when the Sublime Porte (the ruler of Turkey) sent an embassy to the court of Louis XIV of France to secure the king’s alliance against a possible invasion by Germanic tribes. His ambassador, Suleiman Aga, brought with him a goodly supply of coffee. The Parisian chattering classes soon became enraptured by this brew, and in 1672 a wily Armenian named Pascal opened the first coffee house in Paris. Not too long afterwards in 1683 the Turkish armies were besieging the Hapsburg capital of Vienna. A spy, Georg Kolshitsky, managed to pass through the besieging lines. He arrived at the court of the Polish king, John Sobiesky, to tell of Vienna’s plight. The Poles attacked. The Turks retreated in disarray, leaving behind five hundred

sacks of a strange bean with a pleasant smell. The Poles had no idea what they were dealing with. Some of the beans were thrown into the river. Some were fed to animals. Some were burnt. In anguish, Kolshitsky appeared on the scene and managed to salvage what was left. Before long the relieved Viennese adopted coffee as their very own brew, particularly when mixed with sugar and cream. It was, of course, the enterprising Kolshitsky who opened the first coffee house in Vienna!

From Vienna and Paris coffee houses spread throughout Europe. Nowhere was this more true than in Britain, where the coffee houses swiftly became major political and social centres, quite unlike the cafés and kaffeehäuser of the Continent. (It is

interesting to note that in Vienna a law existed requiring billiards to be played only on the ground floor of such establishments, lest the tables and spectators fall through the ceilings onto the heads of coffee drinkers!) John Aubrey (1626-97 AD), the antiquary, reported that: “The first coffee house in London, was in St. Michael’s Alley, in Cornhill, opposite to the church, which was sett up by one... Bowman (coachman to Mr. Hodges, a Turkey merchant, who putt him upon it) in or about the yeare 1652.” (If Aubrey is correct, London stole a march on Paris by twenty years!) A number of the London houses developed into exclusive gentlemen’s

COSTA CUISINE

clubs, whilst Jonathan’s Coffee-House is famous as the site of the London Stock Exchange. In 1678 it was rumoured to be associated with the Popish Plot (a fictitious conspiracy concocted by Titus Oates in which he claimed the Jesuits were about to assassinate Charles II). Not to be outdone, in 1696, several patrons were implicated in a very real plot to assassinate William III. The buying and selling of shares in companies, which

also took place, seems very tame in comparison. Samuel Pepys (1633-1703 AD) was a member of the “Coffee Club of the Rota”, which met in New Palace Yard, Westminster, and which was described as a “free and open society of ingenious gentlemen”. It was a debating society where decisions were made by voting in “our wooden oracle,” (the first ballot box ever seen in England). Edward Lloyd opened a coffee house in Lombard Street, which attracted seafarers and where much

maritime gossip was exchanged. This grew into “Lloyd’s of London”. Charles II was concerned at the growth of coffee houses which he feared could become centres of dissent. His order to suppress them in 1675, however, never took effect, but instead the government required all English coffee houses to be licensed; the fee was twelve pence. Failure to obtain a license was punished by a fine of five pounds for every month’s violation of the law. There’s more ways of killing a cat…

a Fiorentina Ristorante Italiano has been gaining a sterling reputation for years. Its prime location, in front of Hotel Crowne Plaza Estepona, must be a factor as is the genius of the Pigani family, who own it and the personal touch provided by manager, Brigitte Pigani. The addition of live music every day means that it is quite an experience to dine at this friendly yet gracious restaurant. We started with the famous Caesar salad (l’insalata storica alla Giulio Cesare), the classic combination of lettuce, croutons, sliced chicken breast imbued with a gorgeous dressing. We also enjoyed a plate of King Prawns with Cherry Tomatoes and Asparagus, which were fresh and tasty. The third member of the party ordered a classic Carpaccio with Rúcula and Grana Padano shavings and pronounced it delicious.

80

Brigitte’s Pasta was a memorable main course, consisting of homemade Spaghetti served with Rúcula, Cherry Tomatoes and King Prawns. The Fettuccini with Fresh Salmon, Asparagus and Vodka Sauce was perfection on a plate, due to the fact that the sauce acted as a counterbalance to the richness of the salmon. Moreover, the presentation was magnificently executed, with the bright, fresh colours of the ingredients adding an artistic touch to the dish.

The third main meal that we ordered was a new creation, which celebrated classic Mediterranean flavours; fresh Swordfish served with an Olive, Olive Oil and Fresh Tomato Sauce. The dessert menu was offered, but we deferred to the chef’s expertise; our faith in his considerable skill was rewarded by a heavenly Homemade Crepe with Gran Marnier and a Vanilla and Nut Ice Cream, along with a Banana and Chocolate Crepe,

COSTA CUISINE which was even more filling. We also enjoyed a gorgeously creamy Pannacotta served with Strawberries. Our only regret was that we lacked the capacity to try the rest of the menu, which included imaginative meat dishes and pizzas cooked in the Fiorentina’s authentic pizza oven. Still, there is always the next time because we will return very soon. Centro Comercial El Pilar, Local 11 (opposite the Crowne Plaza) Tel: 952 885 765 lafiorentina.com.es

ZESTfor

LIFEO By Padre Peter

ften, as far as the eye can see, the landscape of Spain is covered by the drab green of row upon row of olive trees; vital to the country’s tottering economy. In some areas, however, the monotony is broken by vineyards, whilst in others the cheerful orange and lemon groves make a welcome appearance. At this time of year many trees bear both white blossom and colourful fruit, a striking phenomenon! Lemon trees from Libya were introduced into Spain by the Moors, and the fruit became an important commodity in the fairs and markets of medieval Europe. The name comes from the Arabic ‘laymun’, which in turn derived from the Persian “limun”. Oranges also arrived in Spain from the east via India, where in sanskrit they were called ‘naranga’; a word not a thousand syllables away from the Spanish nomenclature! In Elizabethan England, as oranges began to make an appearance, they were known as ‘portyngales’ on account of the fact that they were imported from Portugal (an ally, unlike the dreaded Spanish!) They were originally too precious to be used in such confections as ‘marmalade’ and when in 1524, Henry VIII received a ‘box of marmalade’ from Mr Hull of Exeter, it was undoubtedly made from quinces (marmelo in Portugese) This concoction, ‘quince paste’, is still regularly on sale in southern Europe, even in supermarkets. The word itself first appears in English in 1480, borrowed from the French, who derived it from the Portugese ‘marmelada’. This word, however, had to wait until 1521 for its first literary appearance in Portugal.

The Portuguese were the first to discover the beneficial effects of citrus fruits upon the scourge of scurvy, which so afflicted their crews on the route to India as their trade with that continent increased. They established citrus groves on the island of Saint Helena in order to provision their caravels as they made their way to the Malabar coast. It took a couple of centuries for the British Admiralty to cotton on! Nor was it only

82

COSTA CUISINE in the combat of scurvy that citrus fruits showed their worth. In the sixteenth century the Portuguese explorer Fernám Mendes Pinto reported that in China dried orange peel was boiled up with the flesh of dogs in order “to take away the rank savour and humidity” of the meat. This fruit had been introduced into China under the Emperor Wu Ti, shortly before 100 BC. (It was also in this period that glazed pottery first appeared). After the 3rd century AD oranges were often used to flavour tea. It was not until the 6th century AD that olives first made their appearance in the Celestial Kingdom. And the Emperor was not alone in his love for oranges. Centuries later Louis XIV of France was visiting his minister Fouquet at his mansion in Vaux, where he espied some exotic rarities – orange trees. He arranged for over a thousand trees to be uprooted and replanted at his new palace at Versailles. Some were planted outside in serried ranks lining the drives, but others were planted in silver pots in the salons, thus creating the first ‘orangerie’, which swiftly became copied throughout Europe throughout the 17th and 18th centuries until the ‘modern’ greenhouse began to make its appearance from 1840. Even George Washington had an orangerie at Mount Vernon.

an extra complication to the memorisation of her lines. Despite this, she was an instant success. The love affair between the King and Nell allegedly began in April 1668. She was attending a performance at the theatre in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, when she discovered the King in the next box. His Majesty appeared to be more interested in flirting with her than watching the play. He invited her to supper and the rest, as they say, is history. Doubtless, Charles II was fortified in his love life by his consumption of oranges. With other citrus fruits they have long been valued for their wholesome nutritious and antioxidant properties. It is scientifically established that oranges, pre-eminently, by virtue of their richness in vitamins and minerals, have many proven health benefits including helping in cutting the risk from cancers, arthritis, obesity, and coronary heart diseases.

They are low in calories, contain no saturated fats or cholesterol, but are rich in dietary fibre, which is very effective in people suffering from that excess body weight which causes so many other ills. They have also been shown to reduce blood cholesterol levels. All in all, citrus trees, with their multi-coloured fruits and their white blossom, are not only mightily beneficial to health, but also invaluable as objects of beauty and decoration.

Louis adored his granddaughter-in-law, Marie Adélaïde, and for her twelfth birthday in 1697 threw a grand party in her honour in the Hall of Mirrors. Hundreds of the silver potted orange trees made an appearance, with all the fruits coated with sugar. The manager of the orchards and gardens, Monsieur de La Quintinie, was enobled. Oranges also played a pivotal rôle in English history. Mary Meggs, a retired prostitute nicknamed ‘Orange Moll’ was a friend of a certain Madam Gwyn (another former lady of the night who kept a bawdy house in Drury Lane). She was awarded a licence to “vend, utter and sell oranges, lemons, fruit, sweetmeats and all manner of fruiterers and confectioners wares” within the theatre in Bridges Street (later to be the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane). Orange Moll hired Madam Gwyn’s daughter Nell and her older sister Rose as ‘orange-girls’. Their job was to sell the small, sweet ‘china’ oranges for a sixpence each; a lot of money in 17th century England! But this was the “King’s playhouse” and Charles frequently attended the performances. This new theatre was amongst the first in England to feature actresses, and Nell joined their ranks when she was fourteen, less than a year after becoming an orange-girl. She was illiterate her entire life (signing her initials “E.G.” was the extent of her ability), and this added

This dish was given extra interest by the stunning mini-banquet of zingy flavours from the Orange and Pickled Fennel side salad. On the point of wilting from sensory overload, I had to take a quick break, choosing to watch the live DJ sets, periodically punctuated by funky electric violin and drumming, complimented by mesmerizingly pert and jiggly seminaked dancing girls.

The service couldn’t have been crisper or more charming and we were soon sipping the legendary Nikki Beach Mojitos. Deadly and delicious, this Cuban cocktail was a blessing on such a humid day; so soothing, so refreshing. This was a great way to kick-start the Nikki Beach experience. I highly recommend setting aside an entire evening and what you’d spend on two average meals elsewhere. Your reward will be a deftly presented, perfectly paced array of memorable dishes. We started with a tasting of meltingly soft Akaushi Beef Tartar, accompanied by a fresh Seasonal Salad, intensely satisfying Summer Roll and a shot of subtly flavoured Gazpacho.

One thing about Nikki Beach Marbella is that a party is never far away and as the sun started to set, the volume increased and the party really began. I recovered in time to enjoy the juicy Roasted Lamb Chops served with light as a feather Polenta and, for a spiky contrast, a Curry Parisienne and Zucchini Tapenade in a Tikka Masala and Spicy Yoghurt Sauce, which left my taste buds buzzing like hornets. Pure genius. The climax of our meal had to be the pudding. The Belle Helene was a heavenly, billowy cloud of light marzipan and pear mousse covered in bitter sweet chocolate ganache, accompanied by irresistible mini rum truffles, baby pear confit and almond crisps. Were I enough of a hipster to photograph my supper, I’d have Instagrammed it. At the end of the meal, my mouth felt as if it had been on a magic carpet ride - from the richness of the lamb to the last whisper of delicate mousse. Nothing had jarred, or felt over-prepared; it was simply outstanding.

ADVANTAGE BEL AIR The 3rd edition of the Tournament of BelAir Tennis ITF “SDi-Costa del Sol” was a total success. The 3rd edition of the Tournament of BelAir Tennis ITF SDi-Costa del Sol was a resounding success. The tournament, held at the Tennis Club Bel-Air between the 12th and the 17th of May, welcomed almost a hundred participants. Of particular note was the high standard displayed by players from different parts of the Costa del Sol, Spain and the rest of the world. The quality of some players was outstanding, as five of them have been champions in Spain in their respective categories: +60 Angel Calvo, Carmen Lang +50, +40 Santiago Tintoré and Sergio Gomez + Eva Bes 35 +35 and +40. The closing ceremony and the awards were held on Friday 17 May after an enjoyable dinner hosted by the club to which all players were invited and where there was also a raffle for attendees. The friendly relationship between the club and the sponsor was confirmed when Sergio Gomez, Director of the club, presented André Elshout, President of SDI, with a plaque in thanks for his great contribution to the tournament and his passion for the sport.

CAN YOU HELP CUDECA? Cudeca recently reopened its charity shop at Avenida del Mar Local 23 Marbella. The event was attended by D. Manuel Cardeña, Social Welfare Councillor of the City of Marbella and D. Rafael Olalla, Cudeca Finance Director, along with volunteers and other members of the Cudeca Foundation. Newly refurbished to offer shoppers and staff more space and light, the shop is ready to resume its fundraising endeavours, which are essential if Cudeca is to continue to offer palliative care to those suffering from cancer and other incurable illnesses. The goal now is to extend evening opening hours and for that Cudeca needs volunteers who can offer four

If you are interested in helping or if you know someone who might be, please contact the Volunteer Department for more information on: voluntariado@ cudeca.org or phone 952 56 49 10.
