CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT This month SOCIETY MARBELLA delves into the legend that is Robbie Williams

King

of Bloke and Bird By Amber O’Shaughnessy

S

With a career spanning almost 20 years, few pop stars better represent ‘Best of British’ than Mr. Robbie Williams. His latest album Swings Both Ways sold 109,000 copies in its first week; it is Williams’s 11th Number One album and testament to the fact that the former Take That star shows no signs of slowing down.

wings Both Ways is the sequel to Robbie Williams’s first swing album Sing When You’re Winning, released in 2001. Williams told Digital Spy, “First of all, I wanted to do a swing album because I wanted to do a swing album. I always knew I’d do another and I think now is the perfect time to do it. I’m enjoying showbiz and I’m enjoying my life and my understanding of where I am now is that there needs to be an event every time I bring out a record. The album this time is a definite ode and a loving glance towards a period on the planet that I was never invited to ‘coz I wasn’t there… I wanted to be, which I feel still very strongly linked to.” The album also heralds the highly anticipated return of longtime collaborator Guy Chambers to Robbie’s work, a partnership we last witnessed back in 2002 on Williams’s hugely successful album Escapology. Chambers has co-written the majority of material on the new album and only recently joined Robbie on the X Factor stage as he performed his latest single ‘Go Gentle’. Robbie, ever the extrovert, was dressed as a ship’s admiral as Chambers stood on the makeshift boat’s bow. The new album also gives prominence to a large number of other performers. The distinctive voices of

singers such as Lily Allen, Olly Murs, Kelly Clarkson and Michael Bublé all grace the record in cover versions of classic hits such as ‘Dream A Little Dream’ and ‘I Wanna Be Like You’ from Disney’s The Jungle Book. On Williams’s official website, Lily Allen mentioned that she “didn’t hesitate when Robbie asked me if I’d like to duet with him on it”, although the female songstress admitted that she “was a bit nervous when we recorded it, especially when I asked him what he wanted me to do and he said something like ‘just be you’”. Murs also commented on his first collaboration with the 39 year-old singer on robbiewilliams.com; he said that he “absolutely loved working with Rob on this album. After touring Europe with him this year it seemed only right that we record something together, and ‘I Wanna Be Like You’ is such a classic sing-a-long tune. It’s always brilliant when you get to work with your mates!” The chemistry between these two charismatic cheeky chappies was clear to see at the Royal Variety Show, which took place last month at the London Palladium and it was a real delight to see Robbie back in the musical limelight, where he belongs. Williams’s penchant for exhibitionism and showmanship first manifested itself back in the Golden era of British pop in the 1990s as one fifth of the band Take That. Despite being the youngest member, Robbie was known to be

the extrovert of the new boy band, favouring the entertainment side of the business rather than the musical. Inevitable frictions occurred between the young men and Robbie quit Take That in 1995, vowing to go solo and, as they say, the rest is history. It was the fourth single from Williams’s first solo album Life Thru a Lens, which really transformed the singer into a household name. ‘Angels’ became one of the most popular songs of all time and caused sales of the album to sky rocket; Life Thru a Lens remained inside the British Top Ten for 40 weeks and spent 218 weeks there altogether, making it the 58th best selling album in UK history with sales of over 2.4 million. The singer went on to storm the charts for a consecutive number of years, producing catchy, lyrical hits for an insatiable British public including ‘Millennium’, ‘No Regrets’ and ‘Let Me Entertain You’. The highest watermark for Williams however has to be his 2002 signing with EMI. The singer negotiated a record breaking £80 million contract which is still the biggest music deal in UK history. The first album to be released as part of this deal, Escapology marked a notable break from Robbie’s previous work; he took a far more active role in the creation and production of songs such as ‘Come Undone’ and ‘Feel’. The album hit the number one spot in more than 10 countries.

Olly Murs: “It’s always brilliant when you get to work with your mates!”

Then in October 2003, another landmark moment in the career of Robbie Williams came in the form of his first live album. Live at Knebworth was another huge success for the singer but speaking to the Daily Mail it seems that during the concert, underneath all the showmanship, a very nervous thirty-something was hiding. He says, “I was beyond terrified. There was a sea of 135,000 people in front of me and I felt like anything but a rock god. They hadn’t paid to see someone petrified from Stoke-on-Trent, so I had to override my feelings for the sake of entertainment.” It’s hard to believe that this is the Robbie Williams that the nation knows and loves but it does highlight the fact that even the most seemingly confident performers fight their own personal battles. It is no secret that Robbie has battled mental illness, obesity, self-esteem issues, alcoholism, and substance abuse throughout his life. However, as we approach the beginning of 2014, it

Lily Allen confides she “didn’t hesitate when Robbie asked me if I’d like to duet with him” on the album seems that Robbie has reached a certain level of contentment. Back in July 2010, to the delight of the whole UK Robbie and Gary Barlow resolved their longstanding feud and Williams rejoined the Take That boys as they released their first album as a five piece band in 15 years, aptly named Progress. Now with the release of his debut album, the 39 year-old also may well have found ‘the one’ in Turkish actress Ayda Field. The couple married in an intimate ceremony at Robbie’s Los Angeles home on 7 August 2010, which was swiftly followed by the birth of the pair’s baby girl – Theodora Rose, born on 18 September 2012. We wish Robbie all the best with his Swing Both Ways album. Williams once sang the infamous lyric, “Let me entertain you” and may he continue to do so for many years to come.

Diplomatic tensions over Gibraltar threatened to escalate further this month as Spanish police imposed checks on Christmas shoppers during the bank holiday. Pedestrians crossing into La Linea from Gibraltar were left in the cold for up to two hours while delays for motorists reached four hours by the evening. The Royal Gibraltar Police had to boost the number of officers at the border in a bid to control frustrated crowds who left their vehicles to vent their anger at the Guardia Civil. “There are women and children standing out in the cold for hours. The point will come one day when people become so angry that they stampede the border,” warned Gibraltarian Chief Inspector Yates. “So far we have managed to avoid that.” The following day over 200 demonstrators from both Spain and Gibraltar gathered for a protest, which was planned to coincide with International Human Rights Day. Britain has made repeated complaints about the stringent checks arguing that they are “politically motivated and disproportional” but which Spain insists are necessary to combat tobacco smuggling. The biggest event in Spanish pop music took place recently at the Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid. The Los 40 Principales celebrated its eighth award ceremony with a multitude of stars performing their latest hits. Flying the flag for Britain were the amazingly talented James Arthur and John Newman, who picked up awards. However the highlight had to be the appearance of Ricky Martin, who took home the Best Latin Artist award. Los 40 Principales is the only music awards in Spain where the winners are decided by a public vote.

A plan to create a giant casino complex called Eurovegas near Madrid has collapsed after disagreements between the developer and Spanish authorities. Las Vegas Sands, the casino company controlled by 80 year-old American billionaire Sheldon Adelson, has abandoned a plan to build a mega resort in Spain worth more than US$30 billion and will focus on Asia instead. “We do not see a path in which the criteria needed to move forward with this large-scale development can be reached,” Adelson said. The project included six casinos, 12 hotels and many shops and would have created up to 250,000 jobs. Adelson’s u-turn came after a review by the Spanish government of his request for an exemption from a smoking ban, as well as his financial demands. “New conditions were put forward concerning taxes and legal protection… which could not be taken on board by the administrations involved,” Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaria, told reporters after the weekly cabinet meeting.

“The government needs to preserve the general interests of all Spaniards,” she added. The project was opposed by many citizens across Spain, including those who worried the megacasino would lead to increased crime and prostitution. Others protested against its environmental impact. In a statement earlier this year, the Catholic Church waded into the controversy, expressing its concerns about the project. “The Church supports initiatives that are designed to create wealth and employment, but not at any price,” said the Bishop of Getafe.

Authorities have renewed attempts to evict dozens of cave-dwelling families from their homes in an ancient settlement in Granada. Residents have dubbed the move ‘disgraceful; and are determined to resist. Dozens of activists have been protesting the eviction they deem unlawful and unfair. San Miguel is the site of one of the four main cave neighbourhoods in Southern Spain. For more than a thousand years, hundreds of caves carved out of the eye-catching hilltop have been home to gypsies and other homeless settlers. Abandoned in the 1960s, in recent times eight caves have been occupied by squatters, who reclaimed them to turn them into modest and unconventional homes. Now authorities are trying to resettle people from eight occupied caves citing safety and sanitation concerns at what they describe as a slum that sits above the city. “These aren’t proper houses and it isn’t a residential area of the city. The caves aren’t safe for humans to live in. They could collapse at any moment,” said Granada city urban planning chief, Paco Puentedura

Málaga Children’s Hospital is under investigation after a baby swap incident took place. Parents who had just welcomed the arrival of their baby girl were immensely distressed when they realised they had been given a baby boy instead. The unnamed woman underwent a caesarean and was immediately given her baby girl before the baby was taken to the recovery room. Several hours later the mother was handed what she thought was her baby again. She spent the next few hours holding and breastfeeding the baby and introducing her to family members. It was only after the baby’s grandmother took off the child’s nappy that they found out it was a boy. The couple raised the alarm and it took a further 20 minutes

before their baby girl was found safe and sound on the newborns ward. Staff at the hospital came to apologise and said that the two babies had been in the same room and after having tests carried out, their bracelets were accidentally swapped. They say this is the first time such a thing has happened in 40 years and that an investigation will be carried out to determine why it happened.

UEFA has announced that Spain and Gibraltar will be kept apart in the qualifying groups for Euro 2016. Gibraltar became a full member of UEFA earlier this year despite opposition from Spain, which claims sovereignty over Gibraltar. UEFA’s general secretary Gianni Infantino has confirmed the two member nations will be kept apart due to the sensitivities involved. Following the meeting in Bilbao, Infantino said, “Gibraltar is a full member and will participate in the draw on February 23, but it will not play against Spain. That was one of the criteria that was decided.”

22

Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo had to be escorted out the back door by his security team for fears for his safety and on advice of the local Police. The minister was due to deliver a political speech at the University of Algeciras but it was cancelled due to the building being surrounded by a gang of Spanish protesters shouting slogans of, “Get out, pirate!” and “Picardo, fascist!” Picardo looked physically shaken as he was escorted to his awaiting limo.

Spanish first division football team, Real Sociedad, has provoked the wrath of many Spaniards by flying into Gibraltar Airport for their Copa del Rey match against Algeciras Football Club. The Basque side caused further controversy by booking hotels in La Linea, home of Algeciras’s arch rivals, La Balona.

The nominations for the Golden Globe Awards have been revealed and it seems the Brits are the leaders of the pack. Emma Thompson, Judi Dench and Kate Winslet have all been nominated for Best Actress in their performances in Saving Mr Banks, Philomena and Labor Day respectively. But it’s not just the ladies who have been nominated, the entire cast of Downton Abbey have been nominated for Best Television Drama Series, Idris Elba for Best Actor in Long Walk to Freedom and Coldplay for Original Song, Atlas in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Poor Nigella Lawson hasn’t just found herself in the middle of a divorce settlement; she has been battling her ex, Charles Saatchi and former aides who say the culinary star has taken drugs, specifically cocaine, for many years. While Nigella refutes the claims and has many character witnesses in her favour, it seems her ex is out to do her as much damage as possible and that includes shaming her publicly.

Prince Harry embarked on another adventure last month, covering some 200km in Antarctica alongside other members of the Walking With the Wounded expedition, which involved wounded soldiers trekking alongside Harry to reach the South Pole. Harry and his 12 companions, one of who was a double amputee after losing his legs in Afghanistan in 2009, covered around 15 to 20km a day. They reported that the journey was tough but exhilarating. Harry previously experienced arctic conditions when he joined the charity Walking With the Wounded in 2011 on an expedition to the North Pole. It’s great to see the young Prince doing his bit for charity and we feel sure that the reason he chose these expeditions is his knowledge of what every soldier goes through in war zones like Afghanistan.

Claims that Khloe Kardashian is soon to divorce husband Lamar Odom seem to have been confirmed when the star was seen on multiple occasions without her wedding rings. Glee star Lea Michele has spoken for the first time about fellow Glee star and boyfriend Cory Monteith’s death earlier this year. The petite beauty was a guest on a special Christmas episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show when she revealed that, although every day is still a struggle she would not have got through the past few months without her family and friends, specifically Kate Hudson, who lent Lea her house when the news first broke of Cory’s death so that Lea could be sheltered from the press and deal with her grief with her family in private. She also thanked Ellen for one of her favourite memories, when Cory revealed for the first time publicly that he was dating Lea on Ellen’s show.

26

On a brighter note, the family’s second youngest star, Kendall Jenner, is reportedly seeing One Direction star Harry Styles after the pair have been spotted many times enjoying dinner and secret dates. Matriarch Kris Jenner (soon to be Kardashian when her divorce from Bruce is finalised) is said to be very happy about their pair dating and is hoping it will develop into something more.

Susan Sarandon has revealed that she has a secret way to get through the award shows that she attends each year - she smokes marijuana beforehand! The startling revelation by the famous actress is sure to shock many fans but the star revealed to talk show host Andy Cohen in the US that she smoked the drug before almost all award ceremony except the Oscars. After starring in many films and receiving eight Golden Globes, four Emmys and five Oscar nominations, it’s a wonder the information hasn’t been revealed before.

Cheek to Cheek by Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga The upcoming studio collaboration between Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga is highly anticipated by fans and critics alike, after their duet on Bennett’s album Duets II in 2011. Gaga reportedly approached Bennett in 2012 and asked him to make a jazz record with her, something completely different from her usual music. Bennett has since stated that the album features music from all the great composers including Gershwin and Cole Porter and has a swing band, jazz feel to it.

High Hopes by Bruce Springsteen High Hopes is the eighteenth studio album from American singer-songwriter Springsteen and features the E Street Band, plus some previously unreleased tracks that feature the late musicians Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici. Springsteen has already called the album some of their best work and that his muse and guitar player Tom Morello really pushed him to take the newer songs to a higher level.

Convincing them to take him back to their house, Frank is soon revealed to be an escaped convict; what happens over the course of this one day will shape all three of them for the rest of their lives. That Awkward Moment This hilarious comedy features three men who find themselves in the middle of the dating pool without really knowing what they are doing. The title of the film refers to the moment many people in a relationship dread; that is, when the ‘awkward’ question (“So…where is this going?”) is asked. As with all romantic comedies this one is easy to watch, but has the additional selling point of appealing to the male population too as they will identify with the three main characters. Cast: Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Imogen Poots

Wanderlust by Sophie Ellis-Bextor The singer and Strictly Come Dancing star releases her fifth album this month, featuring new music that marks a different sound for Sophie. The concept driven record has spawned a couple of singles already, including ‘Young Blood and Beautiful’, which was a collaboration with French DJ, Mathieu Bothier. Ellis-Bextor has also planned a headline sell-out show to support the album as well as a 10-date UK tour.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit This reboot of the Jack Ryan films takes a different direction from the previous movies and does not follow the same timeline. Based on Tom Clancy’s character, this offering follows an original script and this time features Chris Pine as the title character – the fourth actor to take on the role. This film follows Ryan as he deals with 9/11, his tour of duty in Afghanistan, and his early days in the CIA. When he uncovers a financial terrorist plot, Ryan must become a spy and fight not only to save his life but those of everyone he holds dear, including his fiancée. The Makeup MASTER CLASS

Text by Nicola McGeorge Photos by: trevorbrooksphotography.com Each month Nicola McGeorge takes you behind the scenes at one of the leading fashion and photographic make-up courses in Spain.

I

am going to call this the ugly makeup month. Why? Because each week we seem to be leaving the class looking worse than the week before. Fellow student, Katie, actually whispered to me, (while I was removing her eyebrows), that it would be nice maybe, just once, to walk out of the academy looking better than when we arrived, only for our teacher Faye to tell us that the next class was ageing makeup. I can hear you thinking, “Isn’t the point of makeup to make you look more attractive?” Well, yes - unless you have been studying the art of special effects! FX has been my favourite part of the course so far and I have loved every minute of it. However, I have found it much more challenging than the fashion or beauty makeup. Working with any kind of special effect needs a completely different range of tools and products from our usual kit. This is how professional makeup brand Kryolan has become my new best friend. We dipped our toes into the special effects genre by blocking out eyebrows. This method is used for creating Geisha and period makeup or simply to change

32

the position of the brow. After gluing down our brows with spirit gum and rolling them with a pin comb to flatten the hairs (quite a relaxing experience actually), we then covered them in moulding wax or soap. The result wasn’t pretty. Having no eyebrows makes you look like an alien or, in my case, a worm. The ageing makeup class was incredible. Faye started off with her usual showstopping demonstration; the final result was so realistic it reduced the model to tears, as she whimpered that she didn’t want to get old. Gulp! I have cried at every birthday since I hit 21, how was I going to deal with being faced with my future aged self? Following Faye’s directions I asked my model to pull a variety of amusing facial positions, which she held while I covered that area in greasepaint from Kryolan, aptly named Death Wheel, to create the sallow appearance of aged skin. Once the model relaxed her face, a series of deep lines appeared and this was the basis for the deepset wrinkles. After making each of the wrinkles more prominent, I moved on to the contouring, which was basically the opposite of what you would do for beauty makeup, as you are trying to make everything look sunken.

Then it was simply a case of adding on any of the particular traits of ageing skin, broken capillaries with a stipple sponge, liver spots, white hair, lashes and brows with white grease paint, thin blue-tinged lips and we even got to create a hairy mole. Alix got very excited when using the fake hair that she ended up sticking it all over poor Elna, who even had it coming out of her nose and ears. Well they do say hairs sprout out of everywhere when you get old, don’t they?

So, what did I look like as old lady? Well I think I actually looked like The Emperor from Star Wars. I decided to keep the makeup on and surprise the other half. He completely freaked out and then told me I looked like my Nan. Humph. Saving the best till last, our final FX class was casualty makeup. I SO wish we had been taught this before Halloween because it was a total blood and gore fest. Cuts, bruises, burns, open wounds and blood running everywhere. This was also the first time we got our hands on latex. I have to admit I was rather slow during this class (I need to stop talking so much), so I only managed to finish a few of the effects. I started off by giving my model Zoe a black eye using only Supracolour greasepaint. It really doesn’t take long to make someone look like they have had a good bashing. I then moved on to creating a large gash on Zoe’s head using moulding wax. This stuff gets stuck everywhere (I even had to

call Faye that evening to ask how to remove it from my hair – oops!) After applying flesh coloured greasepaint, I used a spatula to slice the wax down the middle, peeling back the edges before filling it with wound filler and finally adding a few drops of liquid blood to run out from the wound. Wanting to take it one step further, I attached cotton thread to create the effect of stitches and then pierced the end of the wax/ gash with a needle, so that it looked like I was sewing up the wound. Zoe totally panicked when I came at her with the needle, but then spent the rest of the lesson quite happily walking around with it stuck in her head. The girls really pulled out the stops during this class and I think the photos speak for themselves. December finished on a total high when I was given the chance to create the

makeup looks for CONFETI Magazine’s bridal fashion spread. I was thrown in at the deep end and at one point had to do an hour’s worth of makeup in half the time, but it was an amazing experience. Please check it out in the Spring issue – due out mid February 2014 - and let me know what you think.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

THE INVISIBLE LINE OF

O

ALCOHOLISM

ne glass of wine at lunch. A beer after work. Meeting up with some friends for a night out. For most people, drinking is an opportunity to relax, have a good time, while the biggest reward is the feeling of freedom from any worry or troubles. At this stage, drinks mean conviviality, companionship, pleasure and fun. This person is in control of his/her alcohol use. Something very different happens when the invisible line between controllable drinking and alcoholism is crossed. Crossing the line means a fundamental change in the relationship. Alcohol is now seen differently, as a way to bridge the difference between you and yourself, you and the world. It has the power to change how the person feels and functions: it is used as self-medication, to escape from emotions and reality. At this stage, there is no control over the consumption of alcohol. The craving is overpowering, alongside the mental obsession. In metaphorical terms, imagine having a radio tuned only to one station – the “alcohol station.” The station plays only the drinking song and transmits instructions like, “You need a drink”, “Only a drink can alleviate this agony.” In fact, the person who has the radio stuck on this channel feels completely powerless. They did not request that song and have no idea how to change the channel. Every time they try to listen to another tune the result is the same, no matter how hard they try: they

hear only the drink song, which leads to another drink. He/she is trapped, has no control and sees no way out but to carry on drinking. The dilemma is that alcohol, even though it stops the song temporarily, makes the problem worse, so much so that it will take more drinks to stop the song, as the situation progresses over time. Such is the nature of the disease of alcoholism. Alcoholism is a chronic and progressive disease. It rests upon the pathological changes in the brain, which are longlasting and leave a scar on the systems that regulate both the drive to obtain natural rewards (food, sex, social interactions) and the drive to obtain alcohol and addictive drugs. From a clinical standpoint, the core features of the syndrome of alcoholism are coupled with reduced motivation to respond to the biological stimuli that ensure survival. It is strikingly ironic that alcoholics start to pursue alcohol because they want to feel

free, because when the line is crossed and addiction takes over, this freedom disappears and the individual loses control over their behaviour; they see themselves trapped in a cycle in which they can no longer exercise their will. The New Year is always a difficult time for someone suffering from an addiction. Many will make the resolution not to drink again, as they do not yet realise that it is no longer a choice for them. The only ‘choice’ for them is recovery, to get help and learn to understand their addiction. This is why Cortijo Care is running a sixweek Drug and Alcohol Addiction Group at the end of January. This group will help people who are in denial or those who think they have an issue but have no idea what to do about it. The sessions would not only benefit anyone suffering from an addiction but also the family members or co-dependents of an addict. Alcoholism is often a family disease, meaning its effects are not self-contained or isolated to just the affected person. In fact, for every individual living with alcoholism six or more people are also impacted by the disease. Loved ones can join the group and learn more about the disease, how to help, seek advice or simply air any concerns. Remember you don’t have to wait until you hit rock bottom; you can make a change at any time and Cortijo Care can help you take your first step in the right direction. LOSING WEIGHT

The Easy Way

It’s a new year and, for many of us, losing weight is the number one resolution, especially after one too many mince pieces during the holidays. Making this your goal is easy - the hard part is actually doing it. You could diet but, frankly, for most of us it’s hard enough work staying the size we already are. Exercise? Many people hate it and find running depressing or boring as hell. Classes and gym memberships can be expensive and time consuming. So what other option is left? We may have the answer; i-lipo caters to the busy individual who needs quick results yet can’t have down time. It is the latest body contouring system manufactured in the United Kingdom and is the European leader and winner of the prestigious ‘Victoire de la Beaute Award, Slimming Treatment of the Year, Paris’. Christelle Thuillier, a fully qualified beauty therapist and the beauty manager at Costa Cosmetica Beauty, trained with i-lipo in London. Fluent in Spanish, French and English she is passionate about the results that can be achieved with this award winning machine.

So how does it work? i-Lipo targets specific problem areas. Laser pads are positioned on the targeted areas such as the upper arms, chin, abdomen, or thighs. Instead of exercise reducing overall body fat, i-Lipo can reshape individual problem areas. The low level laser used in i-lipo creates a photobiomodulation effect, altering the cells’ chemistry and triggering a release of a lipase enzyme that can break down triglyceride molecules into fatty acids and glycerol molecules. This process now makes them small enough to exit through your pores and be used as fuel by your metabolism. Naturally, your lymphatic system carries the cell contents and removes them. i-lipo maximizes the body’s lymphatic flow through stimulation of the nodes in your treatment area. Exercise is recommended following treatment in order to metabolize the newly released fatty acids and glycerol in order to remove them completely from your body. The course of treatment should be eight sessions, performed twice a week so body reshaping can be complete in four weeks. Only one area is treated per day in order to maximize the burning off of the contents; results can be seen immediately following treatment. Typical results are a two to four centimetre loss in abdomen circumference after every treatment. Once a patient has completed a course of treatments they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle to maintain their shape. “When a client asks me how long the results last I tell them it is like any type of weight loss; it lasts for as long as you decide to keep it off. If you stick to a healthy diet and increase the amount you exercise, you will remain the same size. If you decide to run off with your newly slim stomach and binge-eat at McDonalds all day, you’ll start to gain weight once more. The choice is up to you. In short, i-Lipo is a great way to shift a small to medium amount of weight in record time. And, when used

Hair RULES

THE NEW

Out with the old, in with the new they say. A new season is the perfect time to give your hairstyle a major overhaul. Hair expert extraordinaire, Zoe Woods, head technician and owner of Wood Salon, takes us through her top predictions for 2014, from the key cuts and colours to the most inspiring styles of the season.

A splash of colour Judging by client requests and everything I’ve seen on the red carpet and runways, the ‘it’ colour of 2014 is going to be platinum with a capital blonde. Celebrities like Elle Fanning, Miley Cyrus and even Kim Kardashian are the lightest they’ve ever been. Virgin blonde will also be a key trend, an ashy, soft-beige blonde that looks like the hair that you were born with, i.e. silky, uncoloured, naturally perfect. There will be a new, darker take on brunette, perfectly in sync with this season’s moody hue and like bitter chocolate with a hint of black. It needs to have warmth in it too, to ensure that it’s flattering and wearable.

Last year’s rich, warm copper has been brightened for 2014. It’s not cherry red or mahogany, but a more subtle, warm auburn with a twist. Think of cinnamon sticks with a slight hint of ochre. Long hair will never go out of fashion, of course and extensions are more popular than ever. Block colour with flashes of a brighter hue are the perfect way to update long locks this year. If you are blonde, opt for flashes of a pretty pastel shade, reds can go for blonde and brunettes look great with cerise or reds coming through. Colour flashes add depth and tone to any look.

Pick of the crop Short hairstyles are very much having a moment. Nothing generates headlines like a celebrity chopping off their hair and the pixie crops debuted by Jennifer Lawrence, Pamela Anderson, Beyoncé and Rihanna were no exception. It takes courage to undergo such a drastic transformation. But would you do it? When actress Emma Watson had her shoulder-length hair cut off she described it as “liberating.” A crop is a powerful look for a strong, independent woman.

Smooth operator The latest interpretations of the ponytail will be super sleek, super shiny, and always falling from the area below the nape of the neck. Even at Vera Wang, a higher ponytail received the newest styling, being coiled into a sculptural loop before threading through a headband and forming its length down the back.

Crowning Achievement Braids won’t be as big a story as they have been in the past few seasons, but they won’t vanish entirely. My favourite interpretations? Coiled about the head to create a look fit for a queen.

The final touch Hair accessories were all over the catwalks: Dolce & Gabbana’s crowns were

showstopping, while Vivienne Westwood and Louis Vuitton’s statement mesh and feathered headpieces made a serious impact. Hair accessories for 2014 will range from gold barrettes to sprinklings of stars, while the use of leather evokes a mix of old-world elegance and modern toughness. Headbands and leather ties are a key statement to make for the season, allowing that little something extra to be added to any hairstyle.

Going, going, gone While it seems ombré isn’t completely over, it is definitely transitioning. Obvious ombré with hard lines and defined rings of lightness is definitely a no-no. Modern ombré is about having depth at the roots that fade into lighter tips, with subtle gradations and a soft haze between shades.

DYNAMIC APPROACH TO

FITNESS

S

OCIETY MARBELLA has arrived at the conclusion that Dynamic Gym really is in a league of its own after being invited to take a tour of the newly refurbished site this month. It is hard to believe that, despite opening just four years ago, it has already undergone three major refurbishments. The most recent makeover has helped Dynamic establish itself as not only one of the largest gyms on the Coast, but also the most innovative and forward thinking. For example, the revolutionary Electro Muscle Stimulation device has been introduced to the Gym and is proving highly popular. The individual wears a fitted vest that sends electrical impulses to muscles of the body, helping to reduce fat, fight cellulite, improve blood circulation and increase endurance. You train on a one-to-one basis with a qualified personal trainer in order to achieve your goals quickly and easily. The more traditional exercise facilities are also offered at Dynamic Gym. Since the August 2013 refurbishment, the gym boasts a vast floor of brand new exercise equipment sourced from premium German sports equipment manufacturer, gym 80. This top level of the gym is divided into weights and cardio areas and a stretch/abs section to enable you to engineer a complete gym routine from start to finish. The whole floor is flooded by natural light, which also adds to the experience of exercising there. For those gym members who prefer to participate in exercise classes, once again Dynamic ticks all the right boxes. Zumba, yoga, pump, combat, abs express and butt express classes are available every day of the week and

take place in spacious, mirrored studios. For the more hardened gym-goers there is also the spinning room, which offers high intensity classes morning and afternoon. The spin class is one of the most popular of those offered at the Gym because individuals can use the pressure knob on their bike to adjust the intensity of the cycling. The trainer also teaches the class as though spinners are cycling in the countryside, meeting various hills and obstacles along the way. Another facet to Dynamic Gym is located downstairs at the Martial Arts Academy. A whole host of classes take place in this section of the building, including Brazilian jujitsu for adults and children, kickboxing and mixed martial arts. Three personal trainers work within the academy and offer private lessons as well as larger classes.

A shop selling protein shakes and martial arts uniforms, a coffee bar and a sushi restaurant are also part of the Dynamic Gym family. The small kitchen crew have designed a menu to suit all types of gym members; perhaps a freshly squeezed kiwi, strawberry and orange juice is the perfect start to your gym session and you can finish your visit with some red tuna sashimi. Whatever your preference the cafĂŠ and sushi restaurant aim to provide a healthy, fresh array of products and are open every day of the week. It is clear to see why Dynamic Gym is such a popular choice for many people living in the region. Its staff places client satisfaction at the heart of everything they do, consistently looking to improve and remain bang up to date with pioneering methods of sports and exercise. BEAUTY & GRACE AT EXHIBITION OF FINNISH ARTIST It was an evening of colour and beauty at the opening night of Maiju Tirri’s art exhibition at the Houses of Art gallery in the Marbella Club Hotel at the start of this month. Finnish, contemporary artist Maiju paints abstractions of the experiences and feelings she absorbs in life, incorporating her roots in the North and her current presence in the South in a metamorphosis from ice to fire. The exhibition is set to be an outright success judging by the opening night which saw numerous high-profile individuals fill the art gallery including Princess Marie-Louise of Prusia, Count Rudi von Schönburg and the Mayor’s husband Lasse Broberg; guests sipped champagne as they admired Maiju’s unique artistic creations.

GRANTING A WISH SmallWorld Café hosted a hugely successful charity lunch this month organised by the Wish List, a charitable group formed by local ladies in support of two local orphanages. On this occasion however the charity opted to support an orphanage in South Africa since the best friend of Debbie, one of the Wish List ladies, actually runs the school over there. €2,150 was raised for the Lydenrust School with further donations continuing to add to the amount; one particular guest from the lunch has since offered an additional large sum. ‘The Impatients’ choir performed at the event as guests arrived and then later in the afternoon SmallWorld organised a live link to South Africa via Skype where all the children from the orphanage sang back. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house!! Three of the ladies from the charity are flying down to S.Africa mid January to present the children with the money and gifts. SmallWorld will be organising a similar event again in the not too distant future, in aid of another orphanage, Ciudad de Los Niños in Málaga. Last Summer, SmallWorld & the Wish List treated some of the children from this orphanage to a visit to the zoo in Castellar followed by a picnic on the beach. The Café hopes to continue with these activities, but couldn’t do so without the massive help and support of the residents of Marbella.

My fabulous

favourites 2014 Happy New Year, everyone! For all of you who like signature pieces, I’d like to show you some of Boca do Lobo’s striking designs. I find that when an elaborate piece is introduced in a minimalistic setting it has maximum impact and attracts focus and attention. So here we go. Boca do Lobo is led by head designer Marco Costa and hats off to him and his team as they really have pulled up some wow-factor designs! Keep it Safe! But who says safe has to be boring?

MILLIONAIRE SAFE Boca do Lobo’s newest Limited Edition piece is a safe-box, a historical object but with a distinctly contemporary design. This piece is built to last! The safe was born in the 19th century, following the prevalence of bank robberies after the Gold Rush of 1849 and was often deformed by would-be burglars’ attempts to crack it. With lockable drawers, a mahogany structure, coated in highly polished brass and dipped in gold, this piece is one of indisputable value.

Patch table fits on a contemporary living room or on a sophisticated kitchen. The top of this dining table is covered with an intriguing geometric mosaic of wood veneer and the base is made from oak. This round center table is then finished in high gloss varnish. It is 76 cm high and 160 long, perfectly crafted with the uniquely legged bottom matching any kind of home or flooring aesthetics.

OPORTO Intricately designed, this cutting edge piece was inspired by the city of Porto and the rhythmic undulations of its black slate rooftops and building facades. Through reflection, ingredients such as irony, drama and extravagance were added and Oporto came to life. The cabinet is sheathed by individual scales, which are finished in silver leaf with a high gloss varnish. Its two doors feature openings that are spanned with a metal mesh. The interior contains three shelves for glasses and is finished in a silver leaf covered with a translucent lapis high gloss varnish.

MONOCHROME A frontier between design and art, the undulating shape of this piece was inspired by the intriguing chemical reaction that occurs when a material liquefies and subsequently solidifies with changes in temperature. Its fluid and unusual form is moulded from fibreglass filled with expandable polyurethane. Finished in a high gloss its name, Monochrome, is a reference to the use of a single material with a uniform and matte tone of electric blue; a colour that translates the vivacity and emotion which is expressed in this piece.

BONSAI An empowering statement piece, this dimensional art object is suggestive of mineral and natural forms as if, suddenly crystallized, the silhouette of a tree becomes a precious object. The inherent texture of the particleboard wood form is visible through its translucent rainforest tone, a BL custom coloured high gloss varnish.

TORQUE TALK

Our in-depth motoring review

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the PORSCHE 918 SPYDER Imagine the sensations in an Apollo moon-shot as it reaches for the heavens, but minus the ground shaking thunder of its Saturn V rocket launch stage, and you pretty much have an idea of how the 918 Spyder feels as it slingshots away from rest on battery power alone. In this mode the Spyder is almost freakishly calm and composed, and this is certainly the best opportunity you will get to listen to the superlative Burmester audio system.

74

TORQUE TALK

75

TORQUE TALK

First and foremost, the system helps to disguise the Spyder’s weight on the fly. Thus, while it tips the scales at 1,625kg, a good 60kg more than the Turbo S, the messages received by the seat of your pants, or ‘poppometer’ as the German’s would say, subjectively indicates some 200kg less. However, thanks to a fairly even weight distribution over each axle, with heavy bits like the 138kg battery pack positioned centrally on its flat-bottomed floorpan, the 918 Spyder has much lower polar moment of inertia than the 911. Turn into a bend after coming off the brakes and the nose chases the apex like a bloodhound. Turn in under trail braking and the front-end grip is even better. The latter is my normal style of track driving and I could really feel the latest generation Porsche-specific Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 working to the best of their ability. The result is driving characteristics much like a well set up racecar, albeit without the even more extreme mechanical grip of slick tyres.

With the V8 motor on full noise, the Spyder turns into a roaring tiger, the two big exhaust outlets just behind your head venting burned combustion gases like a pair of angry dragons. In true supercar style, the naturally aspirated V8 is best heard when it is engaged with the roof panels off. Then, the soundtrack that reaches your ears is undiluted 100 Proof aural nirvana. The combination of intake, combustion and exhaust starts with a light thunder at low revs, and rises to a primal racecar-like scream as it closes on its sky-high 9,150rpm limit. In full battle cry, the restless sound waves that hammer your eardrums into submission are as full on and spine tingling as they come.

76

The presence of such polar opposite characters in one car is something that will take most owners some time to reconcile in their own minds. This is a car of huge contrasts, and if any driving machine can feel schizophrenic, this is surely it! As tigers go, the Spyder is a tame one that will not turn around and bite you unless you are pre-possessed of the kind of talent bypass that attracts Darwin’s theory. The 918 Spyder’s dynamic abilities are pretty fool proof, but nothing is idiot proof. At the first bend here on the very fast Valencia Circuit, it is abundantly clear that, as with the new 991 GT3 and Turbo, the Active Rear steering makes a huge difference to the way the car turns in.

Porsche say that the 918 Spyder can generate up to 1.8g lateral acceleration on its street-legal trackday rubber. As a reference point, the GT2 RS reached 1.4g on the previous generation Cup tyres. Michelin’s Luc Schaffhauser was there, and we discussed the new tyres. “The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres for the 918 Spyder and GT3 are Porsche specific, and are sized 265/35ZR20 and 325/30ZR21,” he explained. The sticky rubber has a 6.0mm tread depth and an indication of the Spyder’s very slightly rear-biased 43/57 percent front/ rear weight distribution comes from the tyre pressures of 2.3 bar all round for the racetrack.

TORQUE TALK The big Michelins are wrapped around 9.5J x 20 and 12.5J x 21-inch alloy wheels, normally forged aluminium, but forged magnesium on Weissach package cars for a further saving of 14kg. “We also now have an updated Pilot Super Sport tyre for the Carrera GT,” said Luc. “The new rubber compound and tread pattern makes the car much more progressive and user friendly.” I learned that both these asymmetric tread tyre designs feature a similar internal structure featuring Kevlar and steel reinforcement. The bead of the tyre, which sits on the edge of the wheels, is stiffer than before. This supports the sidewalls better on initial turn-in, helping to make the move away from the straight-ahead more progressive.

Coupled to the Active Rear-steering system on the GT3 and Spyder, which has the effect of reducing slip angle at speed, the dynamic benefits of these two systems, developed in close partnership between Porsche and Michelin, can be clearly felt on a subjective level, and clearly measured objectively as well. For Porsche, the 918 Spyder was their first real moon shot. With a bunch of new technologies to embrace, and in some cases even create, within a space of three short years to bring a credible production ready super sportscar. To quote profession race driver David Donahue, “the 959 of the ‘80s was Porsche exploring technology, while the Carrera GT of just over a decade later exploited it.”

As tigers go, the Spyder is a tame one that will not turn around and bite you unless you are pre-possessed of the kind of talent bypass that attracts Darwin’s theory.

To this, I would add that the 918 Spyder does both while adding a few more brand new technologies into the mix. The result has undoubtedly raised the super sportscar bar a couple of notches. The targets set for the Spyder were seemingly impossible at the beginning; to achieve an average fuel consumption of 3.0 L/100km with a Nurburgring lap time equal to the Carrera GT, which had recorded 7 min 32 sec in the hands of Walter Rohrl in 2004. In fact, the Carrera GT itself became a lot faster in the last 12 months just through a quantum leap in tyre technology. Always a bit tricky from day one, it’s limit handling was finally tamed, and the car became both faster and more progressive thanks to the new generation of bespoke Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyre released in late 2012.

77

TORQUE TALK Walter told me earlier this year that the revised tyre has made the Carrera GT both faster and more user friendly. Apparently, the improvement is in the order of 10 sec a lap on the ‘Ring, or around 7 min 22 sec.

characteristic velocity of the chassis, i.e. behaviour once mechanical grip is exceeded, is very linear. Overstep the grip of the rear tyres, as I did on one bend in Race mode, and a quick flick of the steering brings things smartly back into line.

So when the 918 Spyder returned a 6 min 57 sec lap in the hands of Marc Leib in September 2012, it monstered the original target time by a huge margin, beating even the improved Carrera GT lap time by a yawning 25 sec.

The big surprise though was how easy the car is to drive at the level that marks the bald limit of a really fast and capable trackday biased sportscar like the 991 GT3, yet with plenty still in hand.

Commitment to bends comes easily after a few laps in the Spyder because its unerring stability is so transparent and the

What I was not prepared for was how much I would have to hold back on both straight line speed, braking and corner-

ing to avoid unwelcome contact with the back of the GT3 pace car, piloted by ace Porsche test driver Matthias Hoffsümmer. From the Spyder’s hot seat I felt like I was just out for a fast cruise, using about 80 percent of the cars straight-line speed and cornering potential as I reeled the GT3 again in time and again. And why was Matthias getting away in the first place? Simply because I spent a few seconds during every lap fiddling with the powertrain setting control on the steering wheel, which allowed Matthias to pull a few car lengths ahead.

Once you have driven the Porsche 918 Spyder’s on track yourself, its synergetic combination of intergalactic straightline speed, near perfect steering, suspension, braking and aerodynamic performance makes its record breaking 6.0 min 57 sec Nurburgring lap time less of a surprise. I also had to back off a bit after catching up to allow myself room to accelerate out of bends in the more technical, twisty part of the track. Then it was really easy to get back up to the GT3’s rear bumper before braking for the next bend. The other outstanding dynamic strength of the Spyder’s performance envelope is the fact that its big 410 x 36mm and 390 x 32mm PCCB ceramic brakes are clearly in another league from the excellent PCCB stoppers on the GT3 and Turbo S. Despite its own rear wheel steering system, race-bred chassis and Cup tyres, I could clearly see the GT3 pace car squirming around on entry to the bends, as Matthias held it right on the limit of its braking and turning abilities. Meanwhile I had the distinct impression that I could have braked even later and carried even more speed through each bend with the Spyder. The reasons for this are simple. Retardation is aided and abetted to the tune of 0.5g

78

by the strong braking effect of the electric motors when you lift off the throttle, so the brake hardware is more efficient by default, with reduced stress and wear on the system. Incidentally, brake recuperation produces up to 230 kW of power, which flows directly to the traction battery. Later I jokingly asked Matthias why he was braking so early for the corners, to which he simply replied, “Because I had to!” It was clear that the excellent and inspirational GT3 chassis had simply run out of answers at the point where the Spyder still had plenty in hand. The key to the Spyder’s towering chassis prowess is the extremely stiff carbon-fibre

tub that forms the structural core and to which the carbon-fibre monocoque body shell is attached. Removing the two-piece targa roof has negligible effect on rigidity. Incidentally, the rolling chassis weighs just 138kg.

that for enhanced high speed agility. The twin-tube gas-filled dampers are controlled by PASM. The final linchpin in the 918 Spyder’s global design is its Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA), which come into play at speed. The concept of adjustable aerodynamics was factored into the design from day one, so provision was made in the rolling chassis for air to be ducted in, through and out of the car as required for engine cooling, as well as rebalancing downforce at different speeds.

TORQUE TALK mode, and 14-degrees in ‘Performance’ mode on track. All this is governed by the ECU, which both adjusts the angle of incidence of the rear wing, and raises it by 120mm in the latter two modes. The flaps in the front floorpan ahead of the axle remain closed except in Performance mode, when they open to creates extra downforce over the front axle.

This is a car that holds your hand perfectly in a fast tango and also helps you from falling over if you overstep the mark.

With a torsional stiffness of 40,000Nm/ degree sans roof panels, the Spyder is a huge step up from the already impressive 27,000Nm/degree set by the Carrera GT back in 2003. Hanging off this ultra-stiff platform, the geometry of the Spyder’s race style is always working at optimum levels to make the most of the big Michelins contact patches, and it shows. The front suspension is double wishbone and an electro-pneumatic front lift system is an option. The multi-link rear axle features Porsche’s electro-mechanical rear wheel steering, which steers up to 3.0 degrees below 50km/h to increase low speed manoeuvrability, and 1.0-degree above

TORQUE TALK They remain open when the car is stationary as well as in Race Hybrid or Sport Hybrid modes. To minimise drag, they stay closed in E-Power and Hybrid modes until the car reaches 130km/h, at which point thermal loads increase and extra cooling is required. The 4,593cc, dry-sump, naturally aspirated, flat-plane crank V8 motor is a totally new development, and the first production flatplane crank V8 Porsche has ever made. Lighter and more compact than the bent-crank V8 shared by the Cayenne and Panamera, this new motor features technologies that reduce internal friction, helping its ability to rev high and fast and minimise fuel consumption. Producing 608hp at 8,700rpm, its specific output of 132hp/litre is higher than that of any naturally aspirated production motor. Reaching that benchmark sans forced aspiration means very high revs, and this V8 motor has a 9,150rpm rev limit. The electric motors add 286hp at 6,500rpm to this, creating a system total of 887hp at 8,700rpm, with between 917 and 1,280Nm of torque, depending on which ratio of the seven-speed PDK gearbox you are in. Even though the 918 Spyder tips the scales at 1,674kg, or 1,634kg with the weight reducing Weissach package, its performance is stellar. With all systems go and the front electric motor giving it AWD capability, it blasts to 100km/h (62mph) in just 2.6 sec. The 0-60mph time is 2.5 sec.

80

The 200km/h (124mph) mark is passed in 7.3 sec (7.2 sec Weissach package), with 300km/h reached in 20.9 sec (19.9 sec Weissach package). Significantly, the standing quarter mile falls in 10.0 sec dead for the normal car and 9.9 sec for the Weissach package car.

Once you have driven the Porsche 918 Spyder’s on track yourself, its synergetic combination of intergalactic straight-line speed, near perfect steering, suspension, braking and aerodynamic performance makes its record breaking 6.0 min 57 sec Nurburgring lap time less of a surprise.

The electric motors rev to 16,000rpm, which corresponds to 265km/h. Above this speed, the clutch decouples the internal combustion engine from the

Setting a fast lap at the Green Hell as the ‘Ring is affectionately known in some quarters, is a tough job, even for a professional race driver. Cars with edgy limit handling will produce inconsistent lap times as their drivers are engaged in a continuous wrestling match all the way round.

The 918 Spyder makes a reasonable driver look like a hero, and a good driver appear to be a god. electric motors, and 345km/h Vmax is a petrol only affair. On battery alone, top speed is 150km/h, and high-speed running depletes the stored power very quickly. Think about that for a minute; a standard production road car that can turn sub-10 sec quarter miles, yet return a 3.0 L/100km fuel consumption in normal driving with CO2 emissions of 70g/km. The cars range on pure electric power is stated as 16 to 31 km. For those who have battery anxiety, Porsche offer a seven-year warranty on the battery, and that means three years beyond the four-year warranty on the rest of the car.

The two Porsche test drivers I spoke to had high praise for the Spyder’s ability to support them with its user-friendly handling and grip. Consistent lap times around the 7.0 min mark thus come from talent, experience and concentration with no edge of the seat stuff. While I said, “best handling 911 ever” after my GT3 test drive, the 918 Spyder is surely the best handling Porsche ever. This is a car that holds your hand perfectly in a fast tango, and helps save you from falling should you overstep the mark. The 918 Spyder makes a reasonable driver look like a hero, and a good driver appear to be a god. In a world of supercars that usually inflict severe punishment on average drivers who run out of talent, you can count the 918 Spyder as a friend. If a car company were one day asked to help design, develop and launch a mission to Mars, the odds are that Porsche would do the job best. Local Dealer: Guarnieri

HAPPY NEW YEAR‌ T

or is it?

he earliest record of a New Year celebration dates from about 2000 BC in Babylonia and Assyria, where the New Year began in mid-March in Babylon, whilst in Assyria it began in mid-September. The first to adopt January 1st as the beginning of the year was the second king of Rome. On the death

82

By Padre Peter

of Romulus, Numa Pompilius was chosen to succeed him. He reigned from 715 BC to 673 BC, and during a peaceful reign reformed the Roman calendar. It was he who added January and February to make the year solar (as opposed to lunar), and established that January 1st should be the beginning of the year. His chosen deity was Janus, a god with two

faces; one looked forward, the other looked back. When Rome became a republic the date was switched to the 1st March, although under Consular rule this date began to vary until it was finally fixed by Julius Caesar on January 1st. This Roman custom did not last. The Venetian Republic used 1st March until its collapse in 1797, as did Russia from 988 AD to 1492 AD,

With the dominance of Christianity, the date of the New Year in the West began to vary according to various religious festivals. Whilst William 1st of England, the “Conqueror”, ordained that January 1st should start the New Year to coincide with the date of his coronation, as in the remainder of Catholic Europe March 25th gradually took precedence, and was used officially in Britain until 1st January 1752, with the exception of Scotland, which changed over to “modern” dating on 1st January 1600. A vestige of this dating remains with the United Kingdom tax year running from the 6th April, being the 25th March plus the twelve days “lost” during the conversion from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar on the 3rd/14th September 1752. Spain and Portugal had already made the change in 1556. Until then the New Year had begun on Christmas Day.

when September 1st took its place. This date is still celebrated as “New Year” by the Orthodox Church. Since the seventeenth century the Catholic Church has started its New Year on the first day of Advent. This liturgical calendar is also followed by the Lutheran and Anglican Churches.

Some Orthodox countries, like Russia, Serbia and Ukraine, now celebrate a “civil” New Year on January 1st and an “Old New Year” as a religious holiday on January 14th (January 1st in the “Julian” calendar).

The Jews also use a religious feast to herald the New Year. Rosh Hashanah (Head of the Year) is a two day festival commemorating the end of the Seven Days of Creation. This is the first day of the month of Tishri, which falls between September 6th and October 5th (the Jewish religious calendar follows a lunar pattern). As it is believed that God is at this time assessing His creation and determining the fate of men and animals for the ensuing year, the festival has elements of introspection as well as celebration. As honey symbolises sweetness, and as mankind looks forward to a sweet New Year, apple slices dipped in honey are traditionally eaten at this time, as blessings are recited. Islam also follows a lunar calendar, normally with 354 days, with the New Year falling on the first day of the month of Muharram. When compared to the Gregorian calendar, this month varies from year to year (in 2013 it fell between November 3rd and December 3rd). With the exception of Ramadan, Muharram is the most sacred of all months, commemorating the assassination of the Prophet’s grandson, Imam Hussain, together with his family and supporters. The shedding of blood is forbidden during this month. The Chinese also consider the New Year to be the most important

celebration of the year. It occurs on the new moon of the first lunar month. This can fall any time between the 21st January and the 21st February (in 2014 it is the 31st January). Its calculation is extremely complicated, and is based upon a very close observation of the solar system. Each month begins on the darkest day. The years are named after animals. According to legend, Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on the Chinese New Year. Only twelve came, and so Buddha named a year after each one, and decreed that people born in each animal’s year would have some of that animal’s personality. Most cultures regard the period of the New Year as a time when resolutions may be made to rid oneself of bad habits and adopt better ones for the future. Traditionally it was held in Europe that what a person does

on the first day of the year will presage what he or she will do for the rest of it. For this

reason it is important to secure “good luck”. In Spain such “good luck” is assisted by wearing new red underwear on New Year’s Eve. This is called Nochevieja or Fin de Año, when celebrations begin with a family dinner, traditionally including gambas and lamb or a capon. As the United Kingdom takes its time from the chimes of Big Ben, so in Spain the countdown comes from the clock on top of the Casa de Correos building in the Plaza Puerta del Sol in Madrid. As the chimes ring out, it is now usual to try to gulp down twelve grapes, one on each chime of the clock. This is a relatively recent custom, having started only in 1909 when the grape growers of Alicante were looking for ways of disposing of their large production surplus following a bumper year. It rapidly caught on. As the chimes fade, so the Cava or (particularly in the north) the cider, flows, whilst many young people leave their elders to it, and gather at Cotillones de nochevieja, which are held in all manner of places. Next morning there is nothing better than chocolate con churros to get the system back in order!

-Wine is an ‘oenogastronomic’ space meaning that guests are invited to participate in tasting both fine food and fine wine when they visit the restaurant. The concept of D-wine revolves around allowing visitors to enjoy drinking wines that are at their optimum condition. The D-Wine team is aware that there is a tendency amongst restaurants to serve bottles of wine that are often premature, whereas the D-wine sommeliers believe it is worth waiting to serve certain labels so they can be enjoyed at their perfect condition. D-wine boasts a selection of over 3000 different labels, which suit all palettes and price budgets. The wine list has been selected by the expert D-wine sommeliers and recommended in the respective guides of José Peñin and Robert Parker. Both men continually seek to find new tastes and revive the old as they try thousands of different wine labels around Spain each year. One of the innovative features at D-Wine that aids the wine tasting experience is their exclusive ‘wine by the glass’ dispenser system. You can choose to try up to 32 wines selected by their expert sommeliers to find the perfect bottle to take home and enjoy. This is the first of its kind in Spain and reflects D-wine’s pioneering spirit. Specialist fridges have also been installed into the building to maintain specific temperature levels for the many different bottles. We eagerly await the opening of the venue in February 2014!

PRONGED

Monstrosities

hen the Byzantine Princess Theodora arrived in Venice in the eleventh century to marry Domenico Selvo, she brought with her as part of her dowry a set of gold forks. The scandal was great. The Venetians were outraged. God had provided mankind with fingers with which to eat. What were these pronged monstrosities doing in a good Christian household? Saint Peter Damian (c1007-1072 AD) fulminated “God in His wisdom

has provided man with natural forks – his fingers. Therefore it is an insult to Him to substitute artificial metallic forks for them when eating”. Theodora compounded her felony by using a table napkin, instead of wiping her fingers on the tablecloth. (It is interesting to note that in a book of good manners published in the fifteenth century, diners were enjoined to wipe their fingers on the piece of tablecloth allotted to their neighbour rather than using their own. It was also “not done” to blow your nose on the tablecloth. The hand was used…).

When poor Theodora died a couple of years later from a degenerative disease, it was put down to her use of the fork. This implement probably reached Byzantium along the Silk Road from China where the Qijia culture is known to have used forks in the second and third millenia BC. (The earliest extant pair of chopsticks dates only to the first millennia BC under the Shang dynasty) Centuries later, when the gourmet, not to say glutton, Catherine de’ Medici landed in France to marry Prince Henri (later King Henry II), she brought with her an army of Maîtres Queux, who introduced into France such delicacies as macaroons, zabaglione, “iced cream” (a different flavour was produced for each day of her wedding), frangipane tarts, sweetbreads, truffles… the list goes on. Whether the French like

it or not, they were taught to cook by the Italians! The

“fuscina” also made an appearance. “The Italians,” wrote Thomas Coryate (1577-1617 AD; he died at Surat in India!), “do always at their meates use a little forke when they cut their meat… their forkes being for most of

88

yron or steels, and some silver… the reason of their curiosity is, because the Italian cannot by any means indure to have his dish touched with fingers, seeing that all men’s fingers are not alike clean”. He also used a fork, but the average Englishman regarded such fastidiousness as simply for “fops and jackanapes”, although Queen Elizabeth herself received a coral handed fork as a New Year’s present in 1582. There is no record of Catherine herself using a fork, but she insisted on great ceremonial whilst at table. The ladies of the French court did not eat in public, as mastication was supposed to distort the contours of the face and mar their beauty. Catherine would have none of it, commanded them to attend the royal table, and robustly set the example. In 1576 it was reported that she “ate so much that she almost burst and was terribly ill with diarrhea”. As fashions changed, so did ideas of hygiene. Ruffs made an appearance not only at the neck, but also at the cuff, and it became increasingly difficult to keep them clean whilst dipping into the dish. And so in 1633 the fork finally arrived when Charles I of England (and Scotland) declared “It is decent to use a fork”. Spoons needed no such royal warrant. As early as 1000BC spoons with handles were in use in Egypt, although we have to wait until 1259 for the first recorded use of spoons in England, where we find them recorded as part of Edward I’s wardrobe (used to house a variety of objects other than simply clothes). From prehistoric times spoons were used to scoop up food, and shells or stones formed natural implements. As time went by, spoons were fashioned from wood, and this remained true until the late Middle Ages, although domestic metal spoons, as opposed to the ceremonial Egyptian spoons, began to make their appearance in wealthier Greek and Roman households. They supplemented the knife which was used not only to cut food, but also to convey it to the mouth as an adjunct to the use of fingers. As knives tended to be sharp pointed, and as wine, ale, mead and the like tended to flow at meals (water was considered, and was indeed, unhygienic) diners occasionally injured themselves whilst eating.

COSTA CUISINE

In 1669 Louis XIV (a glutton at whose autopsy his intestines were found to be twice the length of the average man’s; Madame de Maintenon once commented that if she ate half as much as he did she would be dead within a week) declared sharp knives at table to be illegal, and blunt wider utensils were introduced. This pattern remained prevalent until the beginning of the twentieth century. The nineteenth century saw a vast increase in differing varieties of tableware. As the middle classes grew wealthier they sought to demonstrate

their wealth on their tables, and strange new cutlery began to make its appearance. Special “fish” knives and forks, lobster picks, grapefruit spoons, marrow spoons, all jostled for attention alongside the staple knife, fork and spoon, and a new etiquette evolved in which woe betide anybody who picked up the wrong eating iron to attack a certain dish! Yet such has always been the case as wealth increased. Manners gradually became more refined. Even prosperous farmers in late Tudor England like Giles Heard could list in his inventory: “eleven

pewter dishes, nine porringers, six spoons, and two pewter salts.” Some of his yeoman neighbours also managed to possess silver tableware. And as manners improved, so too did the warnings, and an early book of etiquette cautions against too hasty eating: “With mete ne bere thy knife to mouthe”, whilst careful directives for polite dining were given: “Let not thy spoone stand in the dysche Whether thou be served with fleshe or fishe. Also eschewe, withouten stryfe To foule the borde clothe with thy knyfe…”

PICTURE PERFECT

P

icture the scene: you are out and about with your favourite gang of girls and it’s a winter evening, dark and cold. Of course, you are all starving. What should your first move be? We have been huge fans of Bollywood since it opened, so it took us less than a minute to move the action to Urbanisation Fuente Aloha, which is where this appealing Indian restaurant is located. Bollywood is always buzzing and is open for dinner from 6:00pm to midnight, which means that it has quickly gained a reputation as one of the most popular Asian restaurants in Marbella. The welcome that our party of four received was typically warm. We requested a table as far away from the entrance as we could and were rewarded by some gorgeous aromas from the kitchen. When we go out in a group our problem is always that we spend ages deciding on which dish to order, only to find that we later wish that we had chosen something that another member of the group was eating. This is yet another reason why we often choose to dine at Bollywood, since it makes more sense to order a range of dishes from every point on the Scoville scale so that normally cautious diners can experiment with something spicier and vindaloo fans can also enjoy the subtle flavours of a korma. Our usual routine is to order drinks first and by the time we are about halfway through the second glass of wine we have come to some agreement on our order. For our selection we decided that the Assorted Platter (consisting of Seekh Kebab, Chicken Tikka, Vegetable Pakora, Meat and Vegetable Samosas and Onion Bhaji) would give us all a chance to sample some of the old favourites for which the Bollywood chefs are famous. We also opted for the Spiced Deep Fried Potatoes and Boneless Chicken Pieces in Chickpea Batter, which only goes to prove how accurate the saying is about eyes being larger than stomachs; when the plates arrived on the table we all started to laugh as the size of the challenge began to sink in.

90

Of course, in our usual fashion we managed to make this demanding task seem easy, the combination of the spicy flavours and crunchy textures combining to set up a series of wonderful taste explosions. For our main courses we had ordered the Lamb Vindaloo (whenever we visit we vow to try the Phal, but wimp out every time), King Prawn Curry, Chicken Tandoori and Goan Curry. The latter was listed as one of the Bollywood Specials and was highly recommended by our waiter. It turned out to be a deliciously

light curry from that very popular part of India, featuring fish and prawns in an aromatic, coconut flavoured sauce.

our manners are less than perfect, but everyone has a great time and has the chance to try all the dishes.

To accompany this we ordered Pulao Rice, Naan Bread and a couple of Chapatis, which meant that we had to do quite a bit of lateral thinking to accommodate our four large plates and all the dishes that were arriving. However, with a little imagination we eventually managed it. This is our favourite way of dining when we go as a group to Bollywood – everyone just digs in and shares. Occasionally

We were very happy with our choices on this occasion, the spicier dishes contrasting with the Goan Curry, which we all agreed was the star of the evening. This is yet another of Bollywood’s great features; whether you consider yourself a bit of an expert on Asian food or have never seen the inside of an Indian restaurant before, the staff members are all very friendly and knowledgeable and are more than happy to share their expertise with you. There was very little room left for dessert, but the delicious Mango Kulfis that we ordered certainly cooled our palates. In our usual fashion, we then ordered four coffees to finish the evening. You are never rushed or made to feel unwanted at this family friendly Indian restaurant and we stayed for a few hours before moving on to our next destination. Bollywood’s popularity is due to a combination of factors including a great location, extensive menu, friendly service and reliability. Every time we visit we have a brilliant evening and that is more than enough to make us repeat visitors. Bollywood T. 952 906 748 Avenida Del prado. Bhavesh and Rajvi enjoyed a magical three day celebration filled with fun, family and friendship. We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. Who would have known that 17 years later, I would be married to him!

apart and we became quite busy in our own lives but we would call each other now and again over the years just to catch up until one day we decided to meet, enjoying each others company so greatly we began to spend more and more time together before falling completely and utterly in love.

Real Wedd

Bhavesh and I met again after some years at a fitness centre and we recognised each other straight away. We started to meet up as friends and realised that we shared the same interests however our friendship drifted slowly

ings

Two years later, we had been well acquainted with each other’s family and friends and we had been on a few holidays together and we were definitely ready to take the next step in our relationship. It was just a case of him popping the question. Last September we

went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do.

It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had Michknown ael and each other. He then sudMelanie two day denly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I marr celeb ied in ration family, a elega turned around to surro see what he was friend nt unded s by their pointing at,and andson, as I looked Dexte down, a light shone on to the rocksr.

We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.

I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

NEW TALENT

This December saw 20 semi-finalists competing for a coveted place in the final of Reality Star 2013. Twelve junior and eight senior contestants performed a wide range of songs for the judges’ scores and to entertain the crowds. After each song the panel of five experienced judges scored their efforts from 1-10 and only the best were given a place in January’s grand final. Six finalists in the junior category have been confirmed – Annie White, Lucia Pineda, Safina Usmanova, Veronica

Malka, Muriel Blechschmidt and Gilles Vanmaldeghem. As competition was so tight, there will be a pre-final shootout for the 2 remaining places an hour before the final on 25th January. The seven senior finalists are: Ksenia Petrova, Jade Williamson, Jose Ortiz Garcia, Mkhitaryan Astrik, Reyes Carillo Real, Nadia Kostenko and Mkhitaryan Arevik. Classical singer Kesnia Petrova received a standing ovation and the top score of the night for her a cappella performance, beautifully sung in both Spanish and Russian.

Organizer Natalie Stuart-Fox from RS Productions thanked co-founders Avalon London, sponsors Sotogrande International School, El Corte Inglés, Marbella Wine Warehouse, Rus Radio, official celebrity photographer David Packwood, Marbella Town Hall and all the supporters and friends who made this second edition of the talent contest possible. These finalists will fight it out on 25th January to be crowned the winner of Reality Star. Tickets are now on sale for this fantastic show at reality-star.com

G

illian McAtee BMus is an accomplished Singer, Singing Teacher & Vocal Coach. She is currently based in Marbella and provides lessons tailored to the needs and requirements of the individual. Lessons can be 1 or 2 hours in duration and start from €30 per hour. A classically trained soprano herself, Gillian has many years of experience teaching singers & performers of all ages and stages, from the complete

beginner to the more advanced student. She has taught extensively with The National Youth Choir of Scotland, singing and Kodaly musicianship in Primary schools throughout the country, and has been lucky enough to train with Dr László Norbert Nemes, who is Director of the Kodály Institute of the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. Within each singing lesson, existing repertoire or new pieces can be explored. Whether singing for fun, preparing for an audition or revisiting your vocal training, lessons will be adapted to suit your needs. Gillian also offers speech coaching to improve your ability at public speaking.

“ Musicianship is a vital force in the world, and whether aware of it or not, most people will have some feel for it- have you ever caught yourself tapping your foot to the beat of a song on the radio? There is music around us everywhere.” As an experienced Singing teacher, Gillian will guide you through your journey as a singer to help you better understand your voice and develop your vocal technique.

SAINT NICHOLAS GALA

CONCORDIA, Marbella’s AIDS charity, held its traditional Saint Nicholas Gala at the Puente Romano Hotel. It took more than 25 volunteers to carry all the sacks containing approximately 250 presents, which had been donated by local businesses. The founder of the organisation, Princess Marie Louise of Prussia, thanked all of these companies for their generous gesture, as well as the volunteers who had helped to organise the event. Saint Nicholas, in his various guises, is a popular figure throughout the world

and inspires charities and commercial institutions alike to do all they can for the less fortunate members of society. This popular saint conferred his special magic on the CONCORDIA Gala Dinner, representing the helpful hand that we should extend to each other throughout the year. A delicious dinner, a lively party and a friendly and enjoyable ambience all helped to make this year’s CONCORDIA Saint Nicholas Gala a huge success.

MGM RAISE €68,000 FOR ASPANDEM

Back in the final weekend of August, MGM hosted the third successive White Collar Boxing event at the Andalucía Plaza Hotel. Once again a great success, the event was sponsored by Linekers Group and supported by the great Frank Bruno, along with Graeme Souness, Joe Egan, Johnny Nelson and Matthew Macklin himself. MGM can now proudly announce that the MGM White Collar Boxing 2013 has raised even more money for its chosen charity ASPANDEM; this year

112

an incredible €68,000. ASPANDEM will be using the money to renovate the CIAT children´s centre completely and will ensure the rehabilitation swimming pool stays open and is maintained to the highest standard. And the good news doesn’t stop there; last weekend saw Matthew Macklin back to his winning ways! He clinched a unanimous points win over the previously unbeaten Lamar Russ in Atlantic City, USA. This keeps alive Matthew´s hopes of a third world title shot, so watch this space!

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Youngsters from the British School of Marbella helped kick-start the yuletide spirit after putting on a carol concert at the Hotel Gran Meliá Don Pepe. The 30 strong choir sang to a crowd of around 100 family members, teachers and hotel guests during a 30 minute performance that included ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’. The children, aged between four and nine, also impressed the audience by learning sign language for one of the festive songs.

The idea has emerged from 12 years experience of sport psychologies with various professional athletes and teams in different fields, such as tennis, golf, football, badminton, basketball. If any athlete needs regular practise to improve a certain skill, why should this approach not work on company professionals? Businesses spend hours on seminars based on aspects of competence and a variety of non- technical skills, for instance leadership, communication, team work, stress control. If a sales force needs to improve its planification skills, the MCS training plan will target the specific behaviour that determines any productive planification, i.e. goals, procedures, resources and report. This approach can be instituted until the targeted percentage is reached by the workplace in question.
