"I wrote lyrics that were intensely personal to me a few years ago. Maybe people know me better now."
A
certified pop legend, who could be better to grace the last cover of 2019 than our favourite soap star turned pop icon, Kylie Minogue. This Christmas, Kylie is set to surprise fans with money-can’t-buy gifts in a 90-minute special that will air on Channel 4. The Aussie pop princess will front ‘Kylie’s Secret Night’ which will see unsuspecting Kylie fans treated to extravagant performances, hidden camera clips, gifts and surprise stunts. In one of the most heart-warming moments, the star will surprise a teacher who runs Kylie-themed music classes for adults with learning difficulties, by turning up to a rehearsal. Hosted by Alan Carr the show will be followed by the UK television premiere of her Golden tour which ran for 22-dates across Europe and Australia from September 2018 to March of this year. Talking of the Channel 4 Christmas special Kylie shared, “This was such an incredible show. It made me laugh, it made me cry. It was like time stood still and I was able to hear some amazing fan stories, reminisce and really take stock of the journey we’ve been on together. All in all, a wonderful celebration, and a reminder of what a privilege it is to be able to connect with people over time and borders and to inspire me to do it all again.” So, to prepare for a Kylie Christmas, we decided to take a look back at the pop princess’ two-decade musical career to date and how she has come to amass a reported 13-million-pound fortune.

Celebrity Spotlight
Born on May 28th, 1968 in Melbourne, Australia, to a Welsh mother and an accountant father, Kylie was the eldest of three children. Her acting career began early when she won the role of Charlene in Neighbours in 1985. She captured the audience with a starcrossed-lovers story line alongside reallife boyfriend Jason Donovan and was catapulted into international fame. Her first UK single, I Should Be So Lucky, entered the charts at number one, followed by a duet with Jason landing the pair the coveted Christmas number one spot in 1988. Media savvy and with a strong work ethic, Kylie saw her career skyrocket across Europe fast becoming a tabloid favourite.
In the early 1990’s Kylie broadened her image appearing with an edgier, raunchier look, which many said was thanks to her then boyfriend, INXS frontman Michael Hutchence who was believed to have been instrumental in Kylie’s metamorphosis into a pop princess. Her third, eponymously titled album received luke-warm reviews, but it didn’t matter, Kylie was hot property and went on to attract many eligible bachelors including Tim Jefferies and filmmaker, Stephane Sednaoui in the subsequent years. Kylie’s fifth studio album, Light Year, boasted success stories such as Spinning Around, which gave the pint-sized pop star her first number one in several years. Then in 2002, the double-platinum album, Fever, featured the hit single, Can’t Get You Out Of My Head, which went to number one in multiple countries and broke the US market, opening the singer up to a whole new audience. The release of Body Language extended her renewed popularity and in 2004 she won her first Grammy Award for best dance recording with the single, Come Into My World. In 2005 fans were devastated across the world when Kylie announced she had been diagnosed with breast cancer at just 36 years old. She underwent chemotherapy and was able to beat the disease and return to
her career but not without lasting side effects including losing the ability to have children. Kylie returned to touring in late 2006 followed by subsequent albums X in 2007 and Aphrodite in 2010. Within that time Kylie was also awarded with an OBE and was inducted into the Australia Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame. In 2012 Kylie began a year-long celebration for her 25 years in the music industry. This began with the Anti Tour in England and Australia followed by a greatest hits’ compilation album, The Best of Kylie Minogue. The following year Minogue and her long-standing manager, Terry Blamey parted waves before she signed a management deal with Roc Nation and joined The Voice UK alongside will.iam, Kaiser Chief’s Ricky Wilson and Sir Tom Jones. Last April Kylie released the album Golden which debuted at number one in both the UK and Australia. With this feat, she has now reached the coveted position in the UK Album Chart in four
“I'm just a natural flirt, but i don't see it in a sexual way. A lot of the time i'm like an overexcited puppy.” consecutive decades from the 1980’s to 2010’s. This year fans enjoyed another greatest hits compilation Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection which also reached number one making it her seventh UK album to reach the top spot. In addition, on June 30th, Kylie debuted at Glastonbury Festival, fourteen years after her breast cancer diagnosis forced her to cancel the 2005 headlining slot. Her slot was revealed as the mostwatched set of the BBC coverage and now Kylie is back on our screens this festive season bringing that Christmas cheer and of course a touch of Kylie sparkle… what more could you ask for this Christmas! aris & Prince Jackson are determined to keep their father’s memory alive in subtle but important ways. The duo revealed at a recent event in Paris that they still work with their father’s stylist Rushka Bergman to achieve those flashy styles that Michael was famous for. “I remember Rushka was my dad’s stylist. She would always come in with these large racks... my dad loved shiny things, blingy, you know? So when I came in yesterday to look at the jacket, it was almost nostalgic,” Prince shares. “It was very cool that to see that I am like, not really being put in the same shoes, but almost doing a very similar thing.” He adds that it felt like everything was coming “full circle.”

Liam Payne’s debut solo album arrives this month. The former One Direction member’s first full-length album will feature all singles released since 2017 including ‘Strip That Down’, ‘Stack It Up’ and ‘For You’ with Rita Ora which previously appeared on the 50 Shades Freed soundtrack. “I’ve had so many amazing experiences over the last few years that I’ve used as inspiration for this record,” Payne wrote in a statement. “It’s been a real labour of love. I’ve worked with some incredibly talented people in the studio to produce an album that truly represents me which I’m very proud of. Your support means the world to me and I can’t wait for you all to hear it.”
Only Kanye would release an album on Christmas Day entitled Jesus is Born. It’s unclear whether the album is going to be another gospel album, Christmasthemed or just whatever Kanye feels like when recording. However, Kanye has previously announced he will only be making gospel music from now

New York rapper, Ja Rule, has teased the release of his new album for months. Christmas in the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Denmark and Finland) offers a picture-perfect winter wonderland. It’s a joyous time to visit and browse for traditional decorations, gifts or try the variety of local Christmas foods. This festive time of the year is celebrated with many similarities and some differences in each location.
CHRISTMAS FOOD OR JULBORD The Christmas buffet or ‘julbord’ is a food lover’s ultimate table. From sweet to savoury, the spread is a never-ending explosion of flavours. From varieties of cheese to cold cuts, fresh bread and spreads, pickled herring, gravlax, paté, knäckebröd, ham, beetroot salad, gingerbread, glögg…. Depending on which corner of the Nordic region you find yourself in, your Christmas Eve dinner table may feature: Pinnekjött (lamb stick meat) and lutefisk (a lye-soaked whitefish with a pungent aroma) in Norway, roasted goose in Denmark, Christmas ham or meatballs and pickled herring in mustard in Sweden, grouse with berries or fermented skate in Iceland, and roast ham with pork feet and Morotslåda (“carrot box”) in Finland. In Finland there’s also a Christmas rice porridge sweetened with sugar and cinnamon, which often has a blanched almond hidden somewhere in the kettle — whoever discovers it in their bowl gets a small gift.
28
LUCIA (all Nordic countries, especially Sweden)
Lucia is one of our best loved traditions and it takes place on the 13 December every year. On this day you can see hundreds of girls and boys dressed up as ‘tomtar’ (gnomes), gingerbread men and stjärngossar (star boys), as well as one Lucia and her maidens. They all have their own theme songs to which everyone knows the lyrics. Each girl holds
a candle and the Lucia wears a crown of glowing candles in her hair. If you’re a Nobel winner, there’s no escaping this peculiar tradition, because December 13th is just a few days after the Nobel Prize gets handed out in Sweden, so the Nobel laureates traditionally get woken up in their Stockholm hotel rooms by Lucia and her fellow singers.
CHRISTMAS MARKETS (all Nordic countries)
For that winter rosy cheek glow take your joy outside, wrap yourself up and hit the skating rink before a stroll through the Christmas markets. Here you can find the most gorgeous handicrafts and Christmas decorations, as well as typical Christmas sweets and a warm glass of Glögg (mulled wine mixed with cardamom and a strong liquor) that will delight your senses and have you singing all your favourite Christmas tunes!
THE YULE CAT (Iceland) One of the more unusual Icelandic lores related to this season is that of the Christmas Cat (Jólakötturinn). This festive feline is huge and is said to devour anybody who is not gifted new clothes for Christmas. Yikes!
THE CHRISTMAS GOAT OR ‘JOULUPUKKI’ (Finland) The Christmas Goat has its origins traced back to the Norse god Thor and his two chariot-pulling goats. Over time, the goats of Thor have morphed into a devilish character wreaking havoc on villages across Scandinavia and punishing people whose homes weren’t clean in time for the holidays. Later still, the Christmas Goat lightened up, became a jolly prankster, and started bringing Christmas gifts centuries before the emergence of Santa Claus. So strong is the tradition that in Finland, Santa is still called by his name Joulupukki (Yule goat). Today, the Yule goat is best known as a Christmas ornament made out of straw and bound with red ribbons, usually found on the Christmas tree or as large versions placed in the cities as decoration.

Victoria Wood is a freelance writer and mother of three based in the south of Spain. Life for her is primarily based around a healthy diet, lifestyle and educating herself and those around her how to live well. Victoria has been a writer for the past twenty years and her work includes an environmental column, journalistic editorials and social media management. She is also a proofreader and editor, and is currently working on her first novel.
A better way to spoil the kids this Christmas? Christmas is coming once again and those of us who are fortunate enough to end up receiving and giving far more than we probably ought to. Not just on a sustainable, environmental level but on the note of spoiling ourselves rotten. When it comes to the children, we don’t want them to grow up having no concept of the value of money but rather to respect it, understand where it comes from and recognise that there’s not enough to go around the whole world. For me, the best way to learn anything is to see it with your own eyes, to live it. So what better way to treat the kids this year than to offer them an experience rather than more material objects that may soon end up at the back of a cupboard.

PARENTING
ANNUAL PASSES: Everyone loves the zoo, the aquarium, interactive museums, them parks, etc. take a great day out for the whole family and rather than just head there once how about opting for a year long pass for either the family or a particular child. This way they can go multiple times throughout the year and enjoy the attraction to the maximum.
CINEMA PASS: many cinemas will offer great deals when you purchase in bulk or buy an annual pass. Going to the movies is always a fun afternoon or evening out so being given a multiple pass is a brilliant way to treat the kids.
BEHIND THE SCENES: think ‘A Night at The Museum’ but where no one gets chased down by Attila the Hun! Many attractions offer behind-thescenes days or nights, such as the aquarium in Sevilla puts on ‘a night with the sharks’ where you get to camp in the shark enclosure overnight - obviously not in the actual tank! These are experiences which get you up close and personal and feel like you’re getting an extra special insight into the inner-workings.
CULTURAL EXPERIENCES: Going to see a local show such as a real Flamenco show, a sporting event, a stage play or musical, pantomime, head to one of the cities to see the three kings parades, or even travel further afield to experience one of Europe’s many incredible Christmas markets (see our article on the top ten in Europe in this issue), and soak up some of the local traditions, foods, and language to get a real cultural experience. Travel is something which teaches children so much, to see and feel another country is something that can’t possibly be taught as effectively in a classroom, in a book, or online, it is priceless.
CAMP OUT: Learning how to camp under the stars is something every kid should experience in their childhood. To know what you need to survive out in nature, cooking by firelight, and preparing your shelter are all excellent lessons as well as serious fun! Throw in a little fishing and cooking your catch the very same day and you’re really living i the wild. Kids love an adventure and this is a simple yet effective way to deliver, even if you just start out in the back garden! Don’t forget the marshmallows.
SUPER SPECIAL DAY OUT: There are many different options when it comes to treating your child to a special experience and of course it all depends on what they’re into but - driving on a race track, off-road quad biking, drive a sports car or a tank, trail biking, mountain climbing, rock climbing, swimming with sharks at the aquarium, learning to cook their favourite food, helicopter ride, safari park, make your own chocolate at the chocolate factory, a tour of their dream stadium, etc. are all examples of achievable gift ideas and unforgettable experiences.

Join the Club At Traders Club International we pride ourselves on the experience of our trading experts and their ability to teach newcomers the world of trading. This month, we speak to Kevin Cade, one of the members to see what attracted him to TCI and how he has enjoyed learning the art of trading.
So, you could say you were a newbie to the world of finance? Hi Kevin, tell us about your background before joining Traders Club International? I have always had an interest in the financial markets, but up until recently I have been too busy building my online business to learn more about it.
40
Yes, you could say that. Other than buying and holding some long term stocks, I didn't really have much experience. What drew you to TCI? It's a funny story actually. I sat next to Shaun Taylor, the founder of TCI on
a flight to Malaga and he was telling me about an exciting new venture he had set up, and how he planned to educate people to trade. I then happened to jog randomly past the office in Nueva AndalucĂa and popped my head in. After chatting to the team I thought this could be my chance to finally get the proper education I needed before risking my money in the financial markets. Feeling excited, I signed up the following week.
How does your average day look? First thing in the morning we start the day with a coffee while we discuss the events that have moved the markets overnight and what could move the markets in the day ahead. I then look at the main products I have been following and potential trade set ups for the day. During the day I have my alerts on to let me know when to trade, alongside watching educational tutorials online, reading financial books and bouncing ideas off the TCI traders. What products are you focusing on at the moment? With BREXIT being such a big issue, I have been looking at some of the currency pairs affected by this, in particular the pound against the US dollar. The guys in the office have been really helpful with interpreting how the fundamental news headlines have had an impact on the currencies and how to profit from them. Can you give us any other tips on what you have learned? Well, just the other day there was an earnings announcement for a company called Boeing. It came out
with poor earnings but still managed to end positive at the end of the day. The moral of the story is the bad news was already baked into the share price. Interesting behaviour to know as well if a company sells off on good earnings. This is where the experience of the guys in the office who have traded the markets for over 30 years has been helpful. What do you like about the working environment at TCI? The main thing is the guidance I get off the experts there. It feels like I have someone coaching me along on this journey and helping me avoid the pitfalls. I also like the community feel in the office as it feels like everyone is trying to help each other be as profitable as possible. Any final words? I'm excited by the prospect of where this journey will take me and hopefully being able to make enough money to live off the income from trading. Good luck Kevin we wish you all the best!

THE TECH SCENE
What a year it’s been for technology! Our TVs are sleeker than ever, with built-in ‘Alexa’ and every convenient setting we didn’t know we wanted. The iPhone 11 then the 11 PRO were released with a third camera, ultra-wide lens, and deep fusion technology for incredible photos. Not forgetting the astonishing things that have been created with 3D printing in 2019 – from cars to food and many things in between. Now, let’s check out the 5 biggest tech trends that we can prepare to see and use more of in 2020…
In November’s issue we talked about how AI is infiltrating many industries around the globe. What we will see in 2020 is more and more businesses developing their own AI that they can supply for others to use. For example, you could develop software with AI that completes specific tasks for your business, and you know other businesses would benefit from your technology too, so they could invest in your technology as a service for their business. McDonalds is a great example of this as they have just bought an AI service that handles orders by voice. Conversational AI is hot for 2020 and we can be sure to see these services being used by the biggest brands as well as smaller companies. We will get more used to being alongside AI throughout the next year, often times without even knowing it.
We’re already at a time where machines are able to recognize what’s on a photograph or identify things on video footage, we even have apps that can read text such as wine menus and it will tell us more info about each wine! Computer Vision is not a new technology, but we can expect to see it applied to many businesses in 2020 in ways we have not seen before. Increased security will be one of the biggest benefits of computer vision with face recognition technology, but autonomous cars may be arguably the most impactful. There is certainly momentum building up to the coming year with big automotive companies making moves to see self-driving cars on the road. Computer vision is critical to autonomous driving and the costs of developing the technology have dropped significantly since its early days, meaning growth is on the rise.

THETHE TECH TECH SCENE SCENE
We’re not quite at the stage where we will use and see self-driving cars on the road every day, but 2020 will be a year of exciting new announcements, tests and developments for autonomous vehicles. Not only cars, but vehicles like trucks, buses, and lorries are also being developed with self-driving features. Several companies including Tesla have plans to launch driverless taxi services, but we don’t think this will be happening on a large scale in 2020, although the testing or Beta phases have already begun. Before we routinely see fully self-driving vehicles on the roads everywhere, work would need to be done on the current infrastructure, new laws would need to be put in place and people still need to familiarize with the idea. It’s without doubt we will see more autonomous cars in the media and possibly being trialed on a road near you, but they won’t be completely relied upon for safety. Drivers will still need to be ready to take control of the vehicle if it runs into any problems. There have already been testing on the streets in the US, AU, UK, and here in Spain. Last year, ‘Erica’ the first driverless autonomous bus was tested in Catalonia to help citizens become familiar with the concept of driverless vehicles. Just because they are driverless doesn’t mean you would be alone on the bus, the ‘driver’ would simply become more like a guide for passengers, collecting tickets answering any questions and keeping an eye on the vehicle.
We kicked off 2019 with a whole series on blockchain, discussing industries it could be applied to like real estate, finance, health and food. Currently mostly known as ‘something to do with Bitcoin’, to put it simply, Blockchain is a highly secure, transparent way to track and store any type of information or files. Big companies such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, FedEx and Samsung have been heavily investing in blockchain technology throughout 2019, so we can expect to see the results of this in 2020, after the initial testing phases are over.
Developments in extended reality technologies have accelerated immensely throughout the past 12 months, and 2020 will see them become more mainstream. Companies like Rolex are already using this technology so you can use your phone screen to virtually try on the luxury watches using augmented reality, and many more are following suit. There are apps to virtually try on new hair colours, new eyebrow shapes and even try out new furniture in your house. We expect to see launches of many more start-ups and big brands using the ‘try before you buy’ concept using AR in 2020 as more companies see innovative ways to embrace the technology. Industries such as travel, education, entertainment, medical, automotive and real estate will see substantial benefits from incorporating extended reality.
It seems the crypto buzz won’t be over anytime soon either as 2020 will also be the launch of the Facebook cryptocurrency coin called Libra! According to their marketing materials, this will be connected to the Facebook messaging app via Calibra, a secure blockchain subsidiary which hosts your digital wallet so you can spend, send and save Libras as an online currency. This could essentially change the way we handle many things online. It will be as simple as – if you have Facebook you can send and receive payments quickly, easily and securely anywhere in the world.

ost people live on autopilot without knowing it, and the only way to get back in the driver’s seat of your life is to become conscious of your thoughts and thinkingpatterns. Worrying is something that everybody can relate to so let’s use that as an example in this article. Next time you feel worried about something, instead of getting consumed by it and letting it determine your emotional state, see it as the perfect opportunity for you to observe your ego-mind (where fear-based thoughts comes from). Observe how it’s always ‘not here’, but always in the future or past, and by this new awareness you are able to draw your mind back to the present moment. When you do this successfully you will feel a sense of relief and inner peace and calm. This peace is always available to us at all times, it’s just our thoughts that pull us away from it. The ego mind is always either wallowing in guilt or resentment about some past event or worrying about an imagined future which may or may not happen. In reality we can’t know what will happen even five minutes from now! We can only ever know what’s Right Now, and it’s in this very moment that peace can be found, not out there somewhere in the future when everything is ‘right’. You have it already – and when you feel it – you’re in alignment with life itself, and from this alignment all good things flow. All we can know for sure is this moment right now, and the more we stay aligned
46
with the present moment, the more peace we experience. And the more we follow the energy of fear and worry that is created by our thoughts, the more emotional and mental turmoil we experience. So, it’s all about becoming aware of the stories in your head and how they are shaping your life experience and affecting your overall well-being. With self-awareness they will begin to fall away, because once you see through them, they can no longer affect you negatively. This does not mean you won’t ever feel fear again! You will, because for as long as we grow and evolve, we all experience it every now and then.
EVERY TIME WE’RE ABOUT TO DO SOMETHING NEW IT WILL SHOW UP, IT’S ONLY NATURAL, THAT’S HOW WE GROW; BY MOVING OUTSIDE OF OUR COMFORT ZONE. Once we do that though, the fear goes away, so it’s not that kind of fear and worry that I’m talking about in this article. What I’m talking about is the stories in our heads that makes a person a worrier, or someone who is more or less constantly living in a worried/anxious/tense state. That type of worry is detrimental to every aspect of your life and should be banished for good, and self-awareness will help you with that. The one who is worried is not ‘you’, it’s your ego, and when you increase and grow in self-awareness, you’ll see this very clearly and that’s when you can become free from it.
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
l Whatever the mind comes up with you don’t have to believe.
Become aware of how your mind always wanders from the present moment and what the stories are that creates the worry.
l The stories the mind makes up has no validity in your present life experience unless you choose to believe them. l I invite you to physically touch something right now, for example the table where you’re sitting reading this, or the ground beneath you, touch it with your hands. l Touch it and say to yourself that 'this' is right now, this is all there is. This will help you detach from your mind and become anchored in your body. l Close your eyes and feel the power of the present moment, which is completely unruffled and not affected at all by your inner drama and turmoil. l Nothing is actually happening but right now, and whatever you’re feeling is not you, it’s a story in your head that you’ve unconsciously believed in up until now. l You can now choose to release those stories by taking yourself and your mind back to the present moment and stay with it for a moment. l Just close your eyes and be fully in this moment, without the stories. l Stay in the moment even if your mind wants to wander or wants to get your attention and say “this is what actually IS. There’s nothing else going on but this, this moment right now”. l When you do this, then whatever you’re worried about or stressing about will lessen its grip on you and you will feel a sense of peace coming over you. l And then, from this more peaceful state of mind you will be able to handle whatever it is that you need to handle without feeling anxiety or stress about it. l The present moment is all we have, and when you get worried or fearful you become lost (in your mind)—and it’s all happening in the movement of thought! l Worry is just a thought that creates stories in your mind that are not true, and when you see this clearly you’re able to bring your awareness back to this very moment, which is where life really is, and that’s when you find the peace that is always present and available to you.

Do you ever wish for a moment of total silence? Do you ever just want to close your eyes and hear nothing or maybe just the sound of the sea, some birds singing softly or the wind blowing. Or not even that. There is so much noise in our life these days and it feels like it is increasing all the time. And it’s not only during the day, even at night, when we are supposed to be asleep, when our minds are supposed to be resting, normally there is still interference. So how can we stop this or what can we do about it? Besides running around with earplugs in all the time. A few months ago a woman went searching for the most silent place on earth. Of course she found quiet places. But never silent. Never quiet enough. There was always some sort of noise; a car far in the distance or a plane in the background. She began to realise that nowhere is totally silent anymore.
So what about you now? Even with all the noise around you, where do you find peace? Where is the most silent place for you?
48
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
Do you make enough time for yourself and your family in quiet surroundings? If yes, then congratulations, because our brain needs this time to reset, to calm down, to rest. If no and you feel the need to do so, then take some time now and think where you could find the most silent place for you. Which is of course different for all of us. Look at your calendar and make an appointment with yourself to go to that place or to go in search of it. Now we are definitely in winter, the coast is quieter‌ enjoy it. Take that walk in the
mountains or along the beach that you have been thinking about. Just do it. If you find it, enjoy it. Visit your special place more and more. And if you want to share it please do so. Like they say on social media – sharing is caring. So, now you have found your place and been visiting it for some time you will quickly notice a difference in your own behaviour. You will be much calmer. You will be able to think more clearly and find even answers to questions you have struggled with for some time. Silence will also give your body and mind a very healthy recharge.

ONE-ing In 2014, after 10 seemingly blissful years together in which they raised two children, one named after a significant biblical figure, the other a piece of fruit, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow announced to the world their “conscious uncoupling”. The incredulous public met the news with understandable confusion – “But they're always smiling aren't they? They've got it all haven't they??.... ..“What the FUCK is conscious uncoupling??!Call your kid a bit of fruit if you must but call breaking up “breaking up”. Shout, throw stuff at walls, slag each other off to to your mates, try to shag theirs and then break up, but don't consciously uncouple. Nobody's glued you together. It's not a game of drunk Twister....”
Vogue interview in which she discussed very relatable insecurities about reaching 30 without a significant other or family nest, the actress managed to snatch a facepalm from the jaws of victory by describing herself not as happily single, but “self-partnered”. Whilst the (possibly ironic) choice of words might once again have carried a whiff of pretension or as some observed, defeat, the sentiment, if not the phrase itself has since been applauded for adding a substantial counterpoint to the widespread stigma of solitude.
For many the term smacked of newagey pretentiousness – an effort by millionaire stars to elevate themselves above the tawdry squabbles and perceptions of failure so often attendant to the end of a marriage.... “Do they reckon they're better than me just because I'm open about the fact I think my ex is a fucking plank??” Nevertheless, in the five years since, the term, coined by a psychotherapist and relationship coach (American obvs), has really taken hold, with literally... some people using it. The rest of us are still calling those people pretentious whilst we shout, throw stuff at walls and then use divorce proceedings to fight each other for the walls and the stuff we threw at them. Well, last month reformed witch Emma Watson hit the headlines with her own entry into the relationship lexicon. During a refreshingly honest and vulnerable
50
Society screams to us to cosy up and settle down and studies have longsince shown partnering, especially through marriage is generally good for your health, resulting in increased life expectancy and improved recovery from serious illness or trauma. Conversely, loneliness is known to exacerbate both mental and physical health issues from depression to cardiovascular disease, stress to strokes. What Watson threw a big celebrity light on is the really-shouldn't-be-novel notion that being 30 and single doesn't automatically mean you're lonely or desperate for a partner, despite what your smug coupled chums might believe. If someone as beautiful, talented, intelligent and successful as the UN ambassador is single, perhaps it's through choice, rather than desperate, fugly, socially inept, spottyfaced, snaggle-toothed, smells-a-bit design. Of course we're presuming here that Ron fucking Weasley's not the only person who's shown an interest in her. Could it be there are actually benefits to bucking society's force-fed narrative and going it alone?

Data collated from over 13,000 Americans and 4,500 Europeans shows habitually single people are in better physical shape than their nested counterparts, exercising more frequently, weighing less and sitting lower on the BMI index. The cynics among us would say these buff singletons are desperately peacocking around the gym for a partner while the rest of us are contentedly cuddled up on the sofa eating takeaways but the cynics among us would still kill for those abs. Photo by Averie Woodard
Data collated from over 13,000 Americans and 4,500 Europeans shows habitually single people are in better physical shape than their nested counterparts, exercising more frequently, weighing less and sitting lower on the BMI index. Single people tend to sleep better and good sleepers generally have stronger immune systems and healthier hearts, a lower risk of obesity, diabetes, stress and depression. Single people can lie at whatever angle they want across the bed without being kicked and single people don't have to get up in the night to put jumpers on because single people's fiancée always rolls onto her front after a bit and takes the duvet with her. Single people aren't woken up at 6am by single people's fiancée's hairdryer even when they don't actually have to be up themselves until 7. Single people aren't kept up every night by snoring meaning single people have to go and sleep on the sofa which makes single people's back hurt. The only snoring single people do occasionally have to listen to comes from the revolving door of hot single people that single people are free to shag all the time because they're JAMMY BLOODY SINGLE PEOPLE!!! …. Single people also have less credit card debt. As well as that lower chance of credit card debt, single people avoid the potential strain of merged finances. A 2014 study of 2000 people showed 1 in 3 admitted to lying to their partner about money, with 76% of these saying the deceit caused strain on their marriage. A strained marriage leads to stress and the types of health complications mentioned before which a happy marriage helps mitigate - approaching half of all marriages end with couples fighting over those walls. It's a fucking tightrope isn't it folks? Single people are also more likely to excel in their careers, with more time and energy free to dedicate to higher education and career progression as opposed to passive aggressive conversations with in-laws, nappy changes and night feeds. Finally, single people tend to foster stronger bonds with friends, family and community. In a 2010 study of 300,000 men and women, researchers recorded mortality rates as 50% higher in the subsequent 7.5 year period for those participants who lacked a strong

social circle. Friends and family provide entertainment and a support network to help ward off stress and illness. Relegating your mates to the sidelines when you're blissfully happy with the one is all well and good, but will those mates still be there when you and the one split up because the one shagged one of your mates... that one won't obviously.
So there you have it. Perhaps being single and 30+ isn't quite the desperate freak-show so many patronising comments and pitying dinner-party looks would have us believe and if you find yourself telling people you're “self-partnered”, you're not necessarily losing... ….you're just pretentious. FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
Shake up your makeup regime I
f you are feeling that your look is a bit tired or dated and you are stuck in a rut, makeup artist Nicola McGeorge is now offering one to one classes, where you can learn the very tricks and techniques from an industry professional makeup artist. 30% of women have worn the same makeup since they were teenagers admitting that a fear of 'getting it wrong' or 'looking silly' kept them sticking to what they knew. There's comfort in the familiar. Every few years, especially as women transition into a new decade, it's a good idea to update your beauty habits with new colours, techniques and products. Let me ask you a question. Do you still use that electric blue Rimmel kohl pencil you bought during the 80s? Love the idea of contouring, yet always end up with two orange stripes running down the side of your face? Are all your MAC makeup brushes sitting pretty on your vanity unit, but you can’t tell the difference between your 217 and your 225? Maybe it’s time for a makeup lesson to update your techniques and refresh your makeup bag. During a makeup lesson I gently pull you out of your rut by showing you, one-stepat-a-time, how even minor updates to a beauty routine can be face-changing. You will leave your makeup lesson fully made up and take home the skills to reproduce your look at home, with your own personal makeup chart.
Back to basics Having been a beauty and wellness journalist before I became a makeup artist, I understand the power of good skin care. 70 percent of a great makeup look is down to the skin prep. If you prepare the skin correctly, you will not only be able to get away with less makeup, but you will also achieve a more flawless application. We start the lesson with a look at your skin care routine and I teach you a few beauty insider tips on keeping the glow all day long.

YOU WILL LEAVE YOUR MAKEUP LESSON FULLY MADE UP AND TAKE HOME THE SKILLS TO REPRODUCE YOUR LOOK AT HOME, WITH YOUR OWN PERSONAL MAKEUP CHART. Together we will then delve into your personal makeup bag and go through which products still work for you and where you may benefit from additional items. Using your own products, such as that Charlotte Tilbury eyeshadow palette you bought on impulse, (plus any makeup materials from my own kit,) I will teach you how to best apply them, taking you from a day to evening look.
The newbie For young adults who have just started dipping their toes into the world of makeup it can be confusing on where to start. With the constant bombardment of beauty campaigns and insta-makeup tutorials it can be hard to navigate through them and find what works for you. I will help you to pick out the colours and tones that best fit your style and features.
Age is nothing but a number As women mature, their cosmetic needs change. Your skin tone, hair colour and even your face shape will change, and your makeup products and techniques need to adapt with it. In later life women tend to focus on their perceived flaws, choosing to cover up with thick foundation, concealers and layers of powder. This can end up emphasising problem areas and make you appear older. I believe in the less in more approach. My aim isn't to change you into someone you do not recognize, I want to help you be the best version of yourself, drawing attention to the areas you are more confident with.

Taking it to the next level For budding makeup artists or muas who would like to refresh certain skills, or learn a new technique I offer different classes from bullet proof bridal that will withstand our humid summers to how to apply undetectable film makeup suitable for the latest HD technology. Book a makeup lesson for yourself or with friend, they make great birthday, Christmas or gift ideas. To experience your personalised makeup lesson at my makeup studio in Nueva Andalucia please contact me for more details.

Black rice, also known as “emperor’s rice” or “forbidden rice” (only royalty in China used to be allowed to eat it), may seem like it is just starting to gain popularity as it is popping up in more health food stores across the U.S. than ever before. But this dark ancient grain has been a staple in various Asian cultures for centuries – and for good reason. It is much more nutrient dense than white rice and contains more benefits than many other rice varieties, yet it can still be used in all of the same convenient and delicious ways as the more traditional forms of rice. Black rice is sweeter than brown rice and has a nutty taste to it. There are different types of black rice and one of the more popular ones in the United States is often found in Thai desserts. Black rice is a mediumgrain, gluten-free heirloom rice. That is right, gluten-free folks can enjoy this rice, too.
Black Rice and Antioxidants Why does black rice hold its unique dark color, you may ask? It is extraordinarily high in anthocyanin – an antioxidant that provides the rice with its unique pigmentation. Fun fact: the outside hull of the grain has one of the highest levels of anthocyanin antioxidants of any food, which is the reason for its purplish hue (similar to other purple-tinted high antioxidant foods like blueberries and blackberries). In fact, research at the 2010 American Chemical Society meeting showed that a spoonful of black rice bran contains more anthocyanins than a spoonful of blueberries! So, what is the reason behind all the hype around anthocyanin? Anthocyanin has a whole slew of health benefits correlated with it. It has been known to help prevent cardiovascular disease, helps to protect against various forms of
cancer, improves brain function, reduces inflammation and more. And black rice is high in more than just the one antioxidant. It also contains a significant amount of vitamin E, which aids in immune, skin, and eye health (among may other important functions). So even though black rice contains similar nutrients and the same amount of fiber as brown rice, it is considered healthier because of its antioxidant levels. Aside from being loaded with antioxidants, black rice is also impressive for a number of other reasons. At only about 160 calories per serving, black rice is a significant source of phytonutrients, fiber and minerals. It is also a great source of plant-based protein at 4 grams of protein per ¼ cup of a cooked serving (which is almost double the protein of brown rice).
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
Heart Health
Slows Sugar Absorption
The antioxidant benefits of black rice go a step even further to positively affect heart health. They help to reduce Low Density Lipo-Protein (LDL), aka bad, cholesterol, which is notorious for its role in heart disease. Black rice has also been known to limit atherosclerosis.
White rice has been known to increase blood sugar pretty significantly. It is high on the glycemic index, which means that it can lead to a rapid spike in blood sugar, which is dangerous for multiple reasons including the potential to increase the risk of diabetes. According to one study, eating a serving of white rice every day can increase your risk of Type 2 diabetes by 10 percent. But black rice actually has the opposite effect. The antioxidants and other nutrients in the rice help to slow the absorption of sugar in the bloodstream. Unlike stripped carbohydrates such as white rice, black rice contains the whole bran of the grain (the part of the grain where the fiber is stored), which aids in the slower absorption of glucose.
Improves Digestion As I mentioned, black rice is packed with fiber, which helps to prevent constipation along with other uncomfortable digestive issues. As a quick summary of the function of insoluble fiber in the digestive process, it is able to bind with the toxins and waste within the gastrointestinal tract, leading to regular and healthy bowel function. So, if you are someone who regularly experiences digestive discomfort, it would not be a bad idea to up your intake of black rice.
Acts as a Detoxifier As another effect of black rice’s magnificently high antioxidant count, it can also act to remove harmful toxins from the liver and help to cleanse the rest of the body as well. You know that I am a huge fan of regularly detoxifying your system, so this is one of the main reasons why I love black rice.
Obesity Prevention The fiber and nutrients in black rice also help to turn off hunger signals to the brain, making it less likely for us to overeat. The same signals take longer to turn off with the consumption of white rice and other simply carbohydrates. Insulin resistance has also been linked to obesity, and whole grain forms of rice, like forbidden rice, have been known to reduce insulin rĂŠsistance.
In sum, black rice contains more protein, antioxidants, fiber and iron than other rice varieties. It contains more carbohydrates than other forms of rice, but it is not stripped of nutrients like white rice is and it is a whole grain, complex carbohydrate, so that does not bother me. Black rice helps to keep us full and removes harmful substances from our bodies. It tastes delicious and can be used in so many different ways. It can be found in health stores and many mainstream grocery stores along with various Asian grocers. Compared to brown rice, black rice has a similar amount of calories, protein and fat per serving. In terms of fiber, brown rice has 1 gram of fiber per serving and black rice has a whopping 5 grams per serving. Black rice also contains significantly more antioxidants as I discussed earlier. So, even if you have already made the healthy switch from white rice to brown rice, maybe it is time to start adding black rice into the mix.

With hub motors powered by batteries with a terminal voltage of 60-80 volts and a capacity of 170-300 Ah the Lohner-Porsche had a top speed of 35km/h and a range of around 50km. Fast-forward 120 years and the new Porsche Taycan improves on those numbers dramatically. The range topping Turbo S model that we tested has a 93.4 kWh Lithium Ion battery pack and two electric motors that deliver 671 hp and 1,050 Nm of torque. The 800-volt power supply, a technology originally developed for the 919 Hybrid LMP1 racecar, is the secret behind the Taycan’s power and efficiency. It passes its ancestors top speed in less than a second on its way to break the 100km/h mark in just 2.8 sec, and 160km/h in 6.3 sec on the way to its electronically limited 260km/h top speed. Range on a full charge is 388-412 km for the Turbo S version and 381-450 km for the less powerful Turbo. So what does Taycan (pronounced Tai-kan) mean? After going through six hundred possible names, some existing others made up, Porsche settled on Taycan. This combination of two words of Turkic origin means “soul of a spirited young horse.” In Japanese “Taikan” roughly translates as “physical experience,” which is about right for a high performance electric car. Porsche is well known for constant technology transfer from their racing programme to the road cars. This is just as true for their hybrid, and now electric cars. “One of the major problems the race engineers had to solve during the development of the 919 Hybrid LMP1 racecar was increasing the electrical power while keeping the motors cool,” explained Michael Stange, Manager for the Taycan model line. “The hairpin shape copper winding technology they developed for the two permanently excited synchronous motors is a direct transfer from the 919 racecar, and this allows cooling air to flow better within the motors, which can then produce more power for longer. At the same time

the 800 volt system helps to significantly reduce the size of the package. The lack of a requirement for radiator air intake helps the aerodynamics and the base Taycan Turbo, which has 680hp and 850Nm of torque, and boasts a groundbreaking Cd of 0.22. The 0.25 of the more powerful Turbo S is still impressive. It should be noted at this point that the 680hp/850Nm of the Turbo and the 761hp/1,050Nm of the Turbo S are the overboost figures produced when Launch Control is activated. The output of both models in normal driving is otherwise a still potent 625hp, with the Turbo S gaining its extra grunt from a larger inverter for its front motor. This motor has a single speed transmission while its rear counterpart has a two-speed transmission that you can hear upshifting as we noted elsewhere. From a practical point of view although the Taycan is based on the same platform
While their silhouettes might imply that they have similar packaging, where the Panamera is a hatchback the Taycan has a bootlid like a conventional saloon. Together with the shorter rear overhang this restricts the size and shape of objects you can place in the rear luggage compartment, although the rear seat backs also fold in a one-third/two thirds split. To help make up for the loss of absolute cargo space the absence of a combustion engine allowed Porsche to place a 911/ Boxster/Cayman style additional luggage bay in the front. That said, half this space is taken up by the battery charging cable pack, although you could simply place this in the rear compartment or rear cabin. The rear seat arrangement also makes the Taycan a four or five-seater and its head and legroom are barely less capacious than the Panamera. However, it was interesting to discover that the Lithium Ion battery was restricted to 33 modules to maximise rear seat foot well space. A larger battery would have further extended range but compromised rear passenger comfort.

Considering the way Porsche instrumentation and infotainment systems have been gravitating towards big graphics based touchscreens with their current generation it is not a big stretch to see how the Taycan cabin architecture and infotainment displays took a small leap further. If you are at all familiar with these systems accessing the relevant information is fairly straightforward. In fact the only function we could not find was the button to raise the small rear bootlid spoiler for a photograph. An engineer later explained that unlike other Porsche models there is no manual control for this part of the active aerodynamics. Problem solved. Unlike a combustion engine whose output increases with revs, an electric motor produces its peak power and torque just off idle. That is why pure electric cars are able to accelerate from rest so rapidly. So despite having less absolute power and torque than the 918 Spyder and weighing some 675kg more, the Taycan Turbo S benefits from the instant application of its 671hp and 1,050Nm of torque to the tarmac, which imposes incredible shock loadings on the driveshafts and the tyres. While Porsche engineers first encountered these issues during the development of the 918 Spyder, the instantaneous twisting forces acting on the driveshafts of the much heavier Taycan Turbo S are significantly greater and so they have been beefed up accordingly. The worse case scenario arrives when you use the Launch Control facility, which is really easy to use. All you have to do is select Sport Plus from the drive menu, press the brake

pedal down hard with your left foot, apply throttle with your right foot and then release the brakes. Totally unleashed the Taycan catapults forwards like a cannon ball. So total is the cars grip on dry terra firma, and so fierce was the acceleration that I had visions of the tyres rotating on the wheels as we left the line. Only when we passed the 200km/h mark a scant 9.8 seconds later did I let off the throttle so that we could exhale and start breathing again! The only other time I have experienced such a totally explosive departure from the line was during speed testing with the Bugatti Veyron back in 2007. In fact the 0 to 100km/h time of these two cars is not dissimilar, although thanks to the latest electronic systems the Porsche’s traction off the line is even more formidable.
At the other end of the scale I simply cannot imagine a car of the Taycan’s performance abilities without the PCCB ceramic brakes. Yet these magnificent anchors do not have to work particularly hard in most situations because 60% of retardation is normally provided by the electric motors when you lift off. So those expensive PCCB brakes really are for life.

TORQUE TALK
On these fast mountain roads the Taycan seemed to bend the laws of physics out of shape with its sheer pace. Of course the optional rear steering fitted to our test car helps the car turn into a given bend more crisply, but it feels so nimble it is hard to countenance that the steel and aluminium Taycan weighs 2,295kg. Had I not known this beforehand I would have said that the car weighs 1,600kg, so responsive and agile is its handling in the bends. The way it keys into the line set by the driver, especially if you trail brake into a corner to settle the nose, is very rewarding to a keen driver. Control weights and linearity are an area where Porsche is very strong and consistent, and the Taycan’s power steering is on the heavier side of medium weighted. It requires more effort than a 992 Carrera for instance, but it has a very satisfying amount of feel and is perfectly matched to the response of the rear axle so that the car feels totally all of a piece. The fine chassis dynamics underline the low centre of gravity conferred by having the big Lithium Ion battery pack spread across the lowest point of the car. In absolute terms the Taycan’s centre of gravity is 9.8% lower than the 992 Carrera and 22%
lower than the Panamera, whose basic platform it shares. With most front or rear drive cars you still have to manage the throttle past the apex, but with the advanced traction management system of the Taycan reacting five times faster than any past Porsche control system the ability of the car to deploy its massive output is all the more incredible for the sheer lack of drama. While the average driver will likely bottle out well before the car’s limits the more experienced enthusiast will find that once the physical limits are finally broached the characteristic velocity of the chassis is very linear. I soon found the technique for exploiting this to liven things up a bit. Slow in fast out is still the order of the day, trail braking into the bend to settle the nose and balance the car. Then you gradually increase throttle using the seat of your pants to balance the chassis with power as the tyres begin to protest. Past the apex a bigger application of throttle allows the tail to gently step out. You catch it with a flick of the wrist and the system hooks up and fires you out of the bend and down the straight like a cannon ball.

TORQUE TALK
On the many uphill hairpin bends on the ascent this also proved to be the fastest way through the bends and the g-forces that instantly pin you back in your seat simply cannot be replicated by a combustion engine that requires revs to build its power and torque. Even a Bugatti Veyron or Chiron does not produce full grunt just off idle. That instant torque hit is also the key to rapid and safe overtakes that would be marginal with a normal car of the same power output. The combination of instant go and peerless traction allows you to literally look for a gap and almost the next second find yourself there. While the Taycan is blindingly fast pointto-point it is safe with it because its intrinsic handling and braking are on the same plane as its straight-line speed. And the fact that it has a cossetting ride even in Sport mode means that you can maintain a rapid pace across demanding roads as long as the battery charge lets you.
The Panamera derived three-chamber air suspension helps the driving dynamics in many ways. First of all its self-levelling capabilities significantly limit squat, dive and weight transfer under hard acceleration and braking, helping to maintain the cars equilibrium across its massive performance envelope. It also confers superb ride quality even with the huge 21-inch wheels worn by our test car. In Comfort mode the car just glides along with minimal disturbance from most surfaces, while in Sport mode its control over body movement is iron fisted. The only time the car felt slightly uncomfortable was when attacking a fast sweeping bend with a big undulation in the middle, which made the back end squirm a little on its bushes. Unless you have driven a hybrid car before the lack of combustion engine noise is eerie at first and is something you have to get used to. Porsche has engineered a synthetic noise into the car that you can active via the infotainment system. However, we thought it sounded like one of those sci-fi type synthetic sounds and a bit hollow so we turned it off after a few minutes.
The Taycan is not as quiet inside as the Audi e-tron or the Mercedes EQC, but of which are luxury rather than sporty vehicles and benefit from significant physical soundproofing material around their rear electric motors and inner wheel arch wells in particular. While the sportier Taycan allows a lot more of its electric motor noise to filter through to its cabin this slight whine never becomes intrusive. It is also interesting to note that you can hear the two-gear transmission shift up at around 80km/h (50mph) in normal driving. Even without special insulation from tyre noise the massive 265/35ZR21 and 305/30ZR21 Goodyears on 9.5J and 11.0J x 21-inch alloys did not produce significant rotational noise. We half expected Porsche to use tyres with a noise attenuating foam layer on the inside of the tread as used by McLaren for their 570GT and the new GT, but they do not. The debate over the sound an electric car makes to warn pedestrians of its approach has resulted in Porsche’s acoustic specialists engineering a reasonably interesting external sound for the Taycan as it drives away. However, unlike a combustion engine sound it is impossible to describe this with words so you will have to experience it for yourself.

Most readers of this admirable publication will know that Santa Claus delivers his gifts riding through the night sky in a sledge drawn by eight reindeer. On a purely pratical level it has been calculated that it would take 5.6 million reindeer to pull Santa’s cargo of 925,000 tons of toys.
B
ut practicality aside, Santa’s reindeers are magical creatures, and in any case since 1939 his original team has been increased to nine with the addition of Rudolph. How did this come about? One year, so the story goes, Santa’s nocturnal journey was imperilled by severe fog. Visiting one bedroom to deliver his presents, he observed a reindeer resting in a corner sporting a luminous red nose. He realised that this could help to guide him in the fog, and so he asked Rudolph for assistance. This was the first time that anybody had asked Rudolf for help, as he was shunned by his fellow reindeer on account of his nose. So he agreed with alacrity, and for the rest of the night guided the other reindeer through the skies. He returned home a hero for having helped Santa Claus. At least, this is the version told by Robert L. May in a small booklet written for children to be given to them at Christmas as a gift from the Montgomery Ward chain of departmental stores. May based his story on a poem “A Visit from Saint Nicholas”, commonly called “‘Twas the Night before Christmas”. This first made an appearance at Christmas in 1823 in New York’s Troy Sentinel newspaper, having been submitted anonymously. Over the years it emerged that the author was Clement Clarke Moore, a Bible professor at New York’s General Theological Seminary. At least, he included it in a volume of his own poetry published in 1844. But questions were already being raised, and a New Yorker of Dutch descent named Henry Livingstone was touted as the true author. This was finally confirmed in 2000 by the scholar and textual analyst Daniel W. Foster.
114
Whichever man was the author, the poem melds together elements of Scandinavian mythology with the then emerging Dutch-American idea of Santa Clause (a corruption of the Dutch “Sint Niklaas”) as a jolly rotund fellow. The original eight reindeer were named in the poem:
rapid than eagles “More his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: Dasher! Now Dancer! “Now, Now Prancer, and Vixen! On Comet! On Cupid! On, Dunder and Blixem!
”
This was not the first reference to Santa’s sleigh being drawn by reindeer. They first appear in “Old Santeclaus with Much Delight”, an illustrated children’s poem published in New York in 1821.
initially Dutch gives way to German; “Dunder and Blixem” becomes “Donder and Blitzen”, then in turn “Donder” gives way to “Donner”. The reason for this is unclear, although possibly Marks felt more at home with German than with Dutch. And it is certainly true that “Blitzen” rhymes better with “Vixen” Since the 1950s these name changes have stuck, and Rudolph still leads the team. It is, of course, scientifically possible that Rudolph did indeed have a red nose. Scientists have discovered that some reindeer have noses of a red tinge because of the “presence of a highly dense and rich nasal microcirculation”. In effect this means a lot of blood vessels packed into a tight space. The effect may also be noted in corpulent elderly gentlemen with a lasting predilection for the produce of Oporto. In the reindeers’case port has nothing to do with it. Nature has endowed the animals with these blood vessels to help regulate their body temperature in the frozen north. This habitat is not at the North Pole, which is in the middle of the usually ice covered Arctic Ocean, but in the northern stretches of Europe, Asia and North America.
This poem, with eight coloured lithographic illustrations, was contained in a small paperback book entitled “The Children’s Friend: A New Year’s Present to the Little Ones from Five to Twelve”. It was from this that “A visit from Saint Nicholas” apparently developed. But Rudolph had to wait until 1939 to make an appearance, and only really became popular in 1949 when Gene Autry warbled “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”.
Here reindeer, known also as Caribou (Rangifer Tarandus), roam in herds normally numbering a few hundred, although sometimes giant herds of many thousands are to be found. The largest known herd has been known to reach a million animals. They do not, of course, fly. (The only mammals that fly are bats. Reindeer are not bats.) They can, however, float. They have two coat layers, one of which is made up of hollow hairs that trap air. This both captures body heat, and gives buoyancy.
The lyrics were written by Johnny Marks, who borrowed most of the reindeer names from the original poem, although
When Santa surmised that Rudolph’s nose would usefully provide light to guide his team and to find his way, he
was very near the truth. Reindeer have eyes that change colour. In summer, in abundant sunlight, their eyes are gold. In the darkness of winter they turn blue, which increases the scatter of reflected light and helps them to see better. They are aided in this by the fact that they are the only mammals that can see ultraviolet light, which enables them to pick out objects in the dim light of an Arctic winter. Some subspecies, to which Rudolph possibly belongs, have knees which make an audible click as they walk. This enables them to keep together in blizzard conditions, and would certainly assist in the close formation required to pull a sledge. But to whichever subspecies Rudolph belongs, one thing is certain. It is a somewhat unpleasant fact. Both male and female reindeer sport antlers. In the winter, however, about Christmas time, the males shed theirs. Santa’s team, therefore, is either all female, or they have all been castrated, including Rudolph.

Graffiti
for Good Cause By Eva George The shops are filled with special gifts, shelves are bulging with festive foods, the sights and sounds of Christmas are everywhere. Since it’s the season of giving, the team at SOCIETY wanted to present to you some astounding artworks, all with deeper meanings that highlight important issues going on behind the tinsel.
These thought-provoking pieces have been created by anonymous street artists with a passion for helping those in need. This is not just art, it’s a movement. Every year there are more installations, paintings and murals that communicate global issues in creative ways. Here are some of our favourites from the past few years…
Santa Cause A thoughtful street artist, who goes by the name of Skid Robot, started ‘planting’ spray-painted Christmas trees around homeless spots in LA last year. These weren’t purely for decoration though, they were used as drop-off points for gift bags with supplies such as food, toiletries and blankets for the homeless, as well as raising substantial awareness of the situation. The campaign was organized as part of a collaboration with the ‘Anonymous Arts Collective’ who continue to help the homeless every year through their artwork. Members of the collective must remain anonymous as unauthorized graffiti art is illegal, even for good cause.
Hopes and Dreams for a New Year It all started with an anonymous artist drawing thought bubbles to show the hope and dreams of the homeless as they slept, but they soon progressed into detailed murals of beautiful landscapes and scenes dotted around LA. The artworks, by Skid Robot humanizes the struggles of the homeless living in the area, with some of the characters even being featured in the murals. Skid Robot posts his artwork on his Instagram account along with a description of the subjects featured. One photo showed a man in a wheelchair who had been shot in the back, the artist painted him a throne with castle battlements and scenery in the background. Another was of a man sleeping on the floor, painted behind him was a double bed with matching bedside tables, lamps and big cushions. The artist explains that he is not only creating awareness through art, but also sharing food with the homeless and raising funds for small mobile homes to keep them off the concrete. According to the artist’s Instagram account, Skid Robot is “an anonymous artist amongst the streets of skidrow, giving to those in need. Creating a dialogue for a solution to extreme poverty through art.” The posts regularly feature hashtags such as #FeedThePoor and #HelpTheHomeless.

The Siren of the Lambs This piece by street artist, Banksy, definitely makes you think twice about the traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. The mobile artwork is called ‘The Siren of the Lambs’ and was driven around New York City’s Meatpacking district, with extremely loud toy animal noises blaring out as it went. The impossible-to-ignore stunt was created to bring awareness to the cruel conditions that animals suffer when being transported from factory farms to the slaughterhouses. It’s an impactful
Season s Greetings A heart-warming image of a child catching snowflakes, sledge by his side and magic in his eyes. Or is it? As you walk by the artwork, it’s not until you turn the corner that you realize it’s actually not snowflakes the child is playing in… it is ash from the skip fire. This amazing artwork was created by Banksy on a garage wall in Port Talbot, Wales, UK and it drew serious attention the minute news broke of the first sighting. Thousands of people visited the site last Christmas to view the artwork aptly named "Season's greetings". Staff even had to be hired to help control the traffic and hordes of people wanting to catch a glimpse. Banksy confirmed it was his work when he posted a video on his Instagram. The piece has since been protected for preservation.
piece, with every detail thought out, even the truck driver himself was part of the performance. It’s not the only artwork from Banksy to highlight animal cruelty, and we think it’s a genius way to let art speak louder than words.
Spread the Love Italian artist, Alessio-B has created some of the most incredible street art in Europe, with more of his works being featured in many art galleries. The stencil artist uses his talents to create unique pieces with short but incisive messages of peace and love. Whilst studying architecture in Venice during his college years, Alessio was inspired by the works of artists such as Banksy and Blek Le Rat. It wasn’t long before he started experimenting with the power of graffiti art, developing his own unique style in a short period of time. In the most unlikely locations, where people would not expect to find something so beautiful, Alessio crafts his masterpieces and leaves behind meaningful artwork that stops people in their tracks. In an interview with ‘I support street art. com’, they asked Alessio, ‘What do you think people first think or feel when they see one of your works on the street?’ His answer - “I hope to at least give them a moment of happiness … and forget everything that bothers them at least at that moment.” A message of love goes a long way through the festive season and all-year-round.

Costly
Critters By Ian Greenland
Following the resoundingly positive
response to my recent article about drunk animals (ie. I didn't lose my job or even get asked to try harder by the editorial team), I've decided once more to wade into the teeming journalistic waters of the animal kingdom in a desperate bid to find something to talk about that isn't Brexit, climate change or politics. When humankind keeps letting us down, it's time to turn to our furry friends for help. Think of this article as the palate cleanser on the news wherein a novelty report about a skateboarding terrapin helps lift your spirits after the anchors have spent 20 minutes recounting to you how EVERYTHING is fucked. According to Routh Clarke solicitors, every year on our roads, cars, motorbikes and lorries are involved in accidents with

WHEN HUMANKIND KEEPS LETTING US DOWN, IT'S TIME TO TURN TO OUR FURRY FRIENDS FOR HELP. over one million animals and ten million birds. Many of these incidents result in little more than a flat seagull and lost appetite, though deer-based accidents alone cause some 20 human deaths annually and creature-related insurance claims run to £20 million. Of course, like my older brother did when at 18 he stuck our mum's Nissan Micra 50 metres into a farmer's field, many motorists could be inventing the presence of a darting animal when quizzed by authorities / their mums. In my bro's case it was an imaginary fox. Nobody believed him in the slightest - even less so when he tried
to blame the same fox for tearing a hole in one of mum's original oil canvasses with a glass candle-holder whilst trying to sneak vodka out of the drinks cabinet at four in the afternoon. If he's reading this some 20 years later, frustrated by the knowledge that he really was framed by an art-hating fox, I apologise. The point is, even though many motorists and my brother Andrew are dirty liars, animals do frequently wreak havoc at a heavy cost to the human world and this is what my latest “article” is about.... (Jesus, surely you're going to have a word with me after this one ed. ?!?) Volunteer scientific researchers were recently forced to start a crowdfunding campaign to cover thousands of pounds racked up in data roaming charges by some incredibly thoughtless eagles whose migrations from southern Russia and Kazakhstan they were studying
over the summer. Transmitters on the birds were rigged to relay tracking data via SMS, but when some of the eagles flew out of signal range, backed up messages did not send until they entered more expensive airspace. One particularly irresponsible hawk, Min, went on a jolly to Iran, subsequently rinsing the entire project's budget. Of course, everyone these days knows you turn off data roaming before you go on holiday but eaglekind were obviously too busy texting their mates when that memo went round. It makes you wonder whether these animals are even worth saving.
ONE PARTICULARLY IRRESPONSIBLE HAWK, MIN, WENT ON A JOLLY TO IRAN, SUBSEQUENTLY RINSING THE ENTIRE PROJECT'S BUDGET.
Far from the only birds wreaking havoc, gulls, geese and starlings regularly direct themselves into the engines of speeding aeroplanes, causing extensive damage and on rare occasions, downing aircraft. Perhaps the most famous case of “birdstrike” occurred in 2009 when Captain Chesley Sullenberger lost both engines of a passenger liner to avian impact - in this case, Canada Geese. Defying subsequent investigative simulations which resulted in catastrophic results every time, the veteran pilot successfully landed the plane otherwise intact, gliding it onto the waters of the Hudson river at 140 mph, saving all 155 on board in what was dubbed the “Miracle on the Hudson”. Most incredible of all was that the geezer's name was Chesley Sullenberger and apparently that's fine in America. Not even Chesney, but Chesley...?.... Sullenberger ...... fucking Sullenberger??! Dogs regularly eat things they shouldn't and numerous owners have reported that their pooches have ingested their hearing aids, or chewed them into a state that makes popping them back in unappealing. Replacement costs run into thousands.
Bits, a 15 year old tortoise in San Antonio caused some $150,000 of damage when he knocked over a heat lamp, starting a fire which spread to the neighbour's home. Luckily the human occupants escaped unharmed and Bits himself received only minor burns to his shell. It's entirely speculated by me that the armoured arsonist then led authorities on a wild chase which began next to his hutch and culminated nearly two hours later some four metres away. A tense standoff saw him refusing to come out of his shell until seasoned negotiators brought his tearful ONCE THE HERD'S owner to the scene FEMALES HAD SEEN HIM wearing a hat made of lettuce. Jason GETTING ALL AGGY Statham is expected AND DESPERATE AND (again, by me) to SMASHING STUFF UP IN play the part of Bits in the probably A HORNY GRUMP, THEY upcoming film of his WERE ALL OVER HIM life.
BECAUSE THAT KIND OF BEHAVIOUR IS HOT, WHATEVER SPECIES YOU BELONG TO.
We acknowledge different breeds of dogs display different qualities but it still seems a bit outrageous that some spend their lives selflessly helping the blind as seeing-eye companions whilst others run around depriving deaf people of their most vital means of communication. Of course if your seeing-eye dog has eaten your hearing aid, things have just taken a difficult turn. At least you'll be wholly oblivious to this drivel.
In March of this year, a lovelorn Asian elephant in China went on a rampage of destruction having failed to attract a female mate in heat. Pushed out of the herd by unsupportive wingmen, the large male took to the streets of Meng'a Town, destroying nine vehicles and damaging several houses before local forestry police halted his 30 minute temper tantrum and coerced him away from the human population.
Presumably once the herd's females had seen him getting all aggy and desperate and smashing stuff up in a horny grump, they were all over him because that kind of behaviour is HOT, whatever species you belong to. Ending this Pulitzer-worthy piece on one of the few animals bigger than that elephant and certainly one historians regards as even more of a dick, we have the story of Mocha Dick, the real life albino sperm whale who partly inspired Herman Melville's classic novel. Cruising the Pacific waters off Chile in the early 19th century, described as initially docile and even sociable, Mocha Dick nevertheless had the temerity to really not want to be murdered by whalers, surviving some 100 reported attempts by force and destroying more than 20 ships before he was eventually killed in 1883 whilst attempting to defend a distraught female whose own calf had just been harpooned to death – and HE's the dick apparently?!! At least in the case of Mocha, a violent end to a dramatic, hard-fought life demonstrated a noble determination to rail against the 19th Century's rapid encroachment of human kind on the natural world – an unwavering resilience to modern practises steeped in millions upon millions of years of basic animal survival instinct. Truly wild. Truly free. ...These days even the eagles are fucking texting. Ian Greenland, www.iangreenland.uk

The risks for agriculture in Europe
The Situation
The Causes
The Solutions
Since the late 1990s, beekeepers around the world have observed the mysterious and sudden disappearance of bees, and report unusually high rates of decline on honeybee colonies
Bee-killing pesticides in particular pose the most direct risk to pollinators. The main reasons for global bee-decline are linked to industrial agriculture, parasites/ pathogens and climate change. The loss of biodiversity due to monocultures and the widespread use of bee-killing pesticides are particular threats to honeybees and wild pollinators.
To protect our bees and agriculture we need to shift from destructive industrial agriculture towards ecological farming. First and important steps are:
“If wild pollinator declines continue, we run the risk of losing a substantial proportion of the world’s flora”
1 Ban all bee-killing pesticides 2 Adopt a bee-action plan 3 Promote ecological farming
The role of the bee Bees and other pollinating insects play an essential role in ecosystems. A third of all our food depends on their pollination. A world without pollinators would be devastating for food production. Who would pollinate all the crops? Handpollination is extremely labour-intensive, slow and expensive. The economic value of bees’ pollination work has been estimated around € 265 billion annually, worldwide. So, also from a purely economic point of view, it pays to protect the bees.
Bee-killing pesticides Bee-killing pesticides in particular pose the most direct risk to pollinators. The main reasons for global bee-decline are linked to industrial agriculture, parasites/pathogens and climate change. The loss of biodiversity due to monocultures and the wide-spread use of bee-killing pesticides are particular threats for honeybees and wild pollinators. Although the relative role of insecticides in the global decline of pollinators remains poorly characterised, it is becoming increasingly evident that some insecticides, at concentrations applied routinely in the current chemical-intensive agriculture system, exert clear, negative effects on the health of pollinators – both individually and at the colony level. The observed, sublethal, low-dose effects of insecticides on bees are various and diverse.

ow let’s talk about the bank account. Again, this was not a radical overnight change for me. Since I started to wake up to how my actions affected the world, I realized that spending money was often connected to destroying the things that I loved. Because of the globalized world that we live in, it can be very hard to understand and trace the impacts that come as a result our transactions. We have learned about children working in sweatshops to make our clothes, companies dumping toxic waste into our oceans and rivers, and animals being tortured and treated horribly, all with our money and for our money. I’ve found that the best way to make sure that I’m not doling out injustice with my money is to simply make far fewer transactions. The more transactions I make and the more places I make

them, the harder it is to know the practices behind them and the impact I am having on the world.
SO, OVER YEARS I JUST STOPPED BUYING AS MUCH STUFF, AND THUS NEEDED A LOT LESS MONEY TO EXIST. I was slowly simplifying my life and removing myself from the monetary system. In October of 2014, I took my money out of the big banks and switched to a local credit union. Prior that, I had taken all my money out of investments that were causing environmental and human destruction. In summer of 2014, I cancelled my last credit card.
2012

Adopted planet friendly diet
The less convenient it was for me to make purchases, the less I made. And also, the more I removed myself from the financial system online, the more I started to purchase locally, from people who were connected to their food and their products. This made it much easier for me to ensure that I was causing less harm to the things that I love. All of that and more happened before I finally decided to go bank account free. This was just one step (again much smaller than the leading-up steps) that further reduced my personal involvement with money. But it’s not about what I gave up. It’s about what I gained through giving up.
CANCELLING MY BANK ACCOUNT HAS ALLOWED ME TO LIVE A PURER LIFE THAT IS NOT ABOUT MATERIAL POSSESSIONS OR WEALTH BUT RATHER HEALTH, HAPPINESS, AND FREEDOM FOR MYSELF, HUMANITY, AND THE MILLIONS OF SPECIES WE SHARE THE EARTH WITH. Because I have chosen to largely remove money from my life, my dependencies are more visible. I am dependent on humanity and the earth. I don’t outsource my dependency through money. Now, some people would think that through my actions I am dependent on others in a way that I take from them and am not able to return. A “mooch” some would say. However, it is the opposite. By living simply and reducing my needs, I have been able to take myself out of the centre of my equation and instead put the wellbeing of my community and the people around me into the centre of the equation. I have the time to volunteer, to give my time, my resources, my care, and my love to people and Earth. This is a concept that can be quite hard to understand for someone who’s life fully revolves around the outsourcing created through the monetary system. A few paragraphs aren’t going to explain it all but if you are interested, my website and many other resources go deeper. Some would look at cutting up these documents as radical individualism. Some probably assume that I am anti-government. This is not about individualism. It’s about community. This is about removing the extraneous from life so that I can focus on what

really matters, which for me is a healthy and happy community of people and all creatures. I am not anti-government. I am very much against many of the things that our government is currently doing. But I am not against the concept of a just and equal government by and for the people.

This leads me to social security. Cutting up my social security card was not purely symbolic. It was much more. It was my commitment to further remove myself from that system. Yes, I do have a social security number still. That is something that I will have, at least for now. I do still use that number for verification for things online. However, one of the largest parts of cutting my social security card is my decision to not accept social security in this lifetime.
I’d also like to note that nothing is permanent. At the time of writing this, I am young, at the age of 31. It is possible that I will end up with a bank account later in life. But to go even ten years without one is more than just meaningful. Part of what I am doing is testing the boundaries of the human experience and seeing what is possible. Much of what I have done, I would not have known if it was possible as a younger me. Regardless of whether or not I have a bank account again in my lifetime, I am very certain that the overall path of my life will stay true. It will change and it will meander, but I will stay true to my morals and always aim to live a life that is beyond myself.
I am no longer paying into social security and thus have decided that I won’t be taking social security out (if it does indeed exist when I am eligible for it, or if I live to the age of eligibility). It is unlikely that I will ever take a job that requires a social security card. My full-time job is to make the world a better place. I don’t have a boss and I don’t need a social security card for my mission in life. I’ve chosen to live a simple life that is not centered around money. What I am doing is not illegal. I do this legally by making very little money. I have vowed to a life of making below the financial “poverty line.” I would like to be clear that I am not trying to simulate poverty in any way. Billions of people live with serious daily challenges to just make ends meet or to have enough to eat. This is very real.
I CONSCIOUSLY DO NOT PAY FEDERAL TAXES BECAUSE I DO NOT SUPPORT WAR, WHERE A HUGE SUM OF MY TAXES WOULD GO. I DO NOT SUPPORT THE USE OF TAX MONEY BY THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION OF THE US GOVERNMENT.
My hopes are to be of service to people in difficult situations and bring attention to the inequalities and problems in our system and solutions to these problems.
As a person with both white and Western privilege I can cut up these IDs, and I acknowledge this. I am not in any way saying that anyone can do what I’ve done or that this is even the right path for them. For people working on gaining citizenship in a new country, homeless people trying to get identification, working to make ends meet and needing a job, or many other situations, this could be more harmful than beneficial to their mission in life. I want to acknowledge the absurdity that a person needs these ID’s to be
124
able to function in society and the problems with this system. Countless people have trouble getting a job or apartment because of the inadequacies of this system. Basic human rights are lacking in our current systems. This is what I aim to draw attention to through my life and my activism. This is my path and cutting up all these things is quite extreme. This isn’t designed for others to walk the same path as me. However, it is designed to get people thinking. It is designed to make many of us question what is typically never questioned and get us to deeply self-reflect on our own lives and the society in which we live in.
I would like to say again that I am far from perfect, and that I acknowledge the hypocrisy that I do have as a 21st-century human being. However, nearly all of my actions are deeply thought out prior to taking them. I am on a path of living in the service of humanity, our fellow species on the Earth, and Earth itself. For me, simple and radically different living is the path that I’ve chosen to take. It’s not the only path, but for me, it works. My intentions are not for anyone to follow my path exactly, but I do intend to influence and inspire people to be truly aware and conscious of the impact of their actions and to make proper changes to strive for a sustainable and just society and world. So, what exactly is sustainability? The dictionary definition is; avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance and Breathe aims to do just that. The lower level, aptly named Ground, has the mission of sustainability at the forefront using environmentally responsible, sustainable and ethical products. The team carefully select brands that support their beliefs and always ensure there is no use of plastic bottles within the establishment, whether it be out for the customers to see, in the kitchen or behind the bar. KM0 water (purified town supply water put through a process of decalcification, dichlorination, reserve osmosis and UV sterilization) is served throughout the establishment in reusable glass bottles. These processes create top-quality drinking water and also drastically

You may wish to argue that osmosis is a process that wastes a lot of water, however with modern machinery such as that at Breathe, the waste is reduced to about 50% and in their case, the ‘wasted’ water is diverted to their irrigation tank to be used for the plants.
Breathe aims to avoid purchasing plastic packaging wherever possible, including pressuring suppliers to avoid unnecessary plastic packaging and alternatives are available on request for straws, bags, coffee cups and other packaging. Wherever possible, they substitute plastic products with paper, cardboard, natural materials or plastic alternatives with greatly improved composability, such as PLA (plant-based starch). The menus at Breathe and Ground cater for a vast array of dietary requirements including vegetarians, vegan and celiac and can cater for healthy, organic, 100% natural and bio diets without compromising on flavour or being strict to a theme. The chefs follow the farm to table concept avoiding shops, markets and distributors wherever possible, bringing you the freshest, organic produce around. Almost all of the fresh

fruit and vegetable products comes from farms in and around Marbella, mostly organic. Open for breakfast from 9am, Ground boasts an impressive selection of speciality coffees thanks to their La Marzocca premium coffee machine as well as luxury organic teas. If dining at lunch time, choose from the a la carte menu inspired by the latest global trends or their excellent value set lunch menu for 19€ per person including two delicious courses followed by a coffee, tea or chocolate chip cookie! ollowing last issue’s article on sustainability, this month I wanted to share with you one of my favourite sustainable and eco-friendly brands.
We are all able to contribute to the movement in some way and that’s what I want to inspire – even if just means making a simple swap and supporting a brand who is doing something important for the world. The’artyvegan is one of those brands. Created by fatherdaughter duo Maurelio and Ellora Torchia, the’artyvegan make fresh, unprocessed tofu, seitan and plant-based cheeses inspired by the pair’s love for food, travel and environmental concern and deliver them to shops and people’s homes, including mine, across London. The story of how the’artyvegan became what it is today is one full of love, life and feel good food. Refusing to accept the social norms of the word success or failure, Maurelio encourages his daughter and ultimately his business to focus on the emotional aspect. You need to focus on the words [and their meanings] happy or unhappy rather than successor failure.
she started helping her father create his own business. “It began with my Father’s vision of making tofu and selling it – but ultimately it grew and is still growing into a far greater opportunity to have the conversations I have wanted to have for a very long time.” Both Maurelio and his daughter (plus the rest of their family) have been vegan for over 30 years and believe now is the time to speak up. “Now, more than ever, I believe we need to share the knowledge and be better in business” Maurelio comments. “It’s 2019 – there are more people that are now ready to think increasingly about where their food comes from and it’s major impact [on the world]. Now… is the right time”. But where did the idea for the brand come from?
“ YO U O N LY H A V E O N E L I F E A N D IT SHOULD BE FILLED WITH T H I N G S T H AT M A K E YO U H A P P Y … I F YO U D O T H I N G S O U T O F J OY, YO U C A N N E V E R R E A L LY F A I L” . M A U R E L I O S TAT E S .
The brand is only just starting out, after launching earlier this year and are already offering a voice to those wanting to shout about food waste and its impact on the world. Co-founder Ellora who still laughs at how she became a part of this brand-new movement tells us that she was “unsure about what was going to unfold” when
128
Moving to Japan shortly after Ellora’s birth, Maurelio learnt the art of tofu.
Learning both the traditional and commercial processes, Maurelio realised there was something pure about the craft of turning the humble soya bean into something else. You have to really “respect the process and time taken to make by hand,” says Maurelio “it’s a feeling that has stayed with me ever since” and one which he credits the success of his business now. Having travelled around the world with his wife, Veena – the Torchia family experienced the art, culture and traditions of some of the most wonderful countries across the world. Turkey; SriLanka; Tunisia; Russia; France; India and Japan are just a few amongst the long list of places they called home. Setting base for 6 months to a year at a time, Maurelio, whose background saw him train as a chef in Switzerland helped him create multiple food businesses with each one bringing a new knowledge, skill or inspiration to his increasingly growing and impressive portfolio. “We are just two culinary souls brought together by our love of bringing fresh, homemade clean and green goods to food-lovers.” Ellora shares. “I fell into the business by accident. But I don’t think I’d change a thing about it. It’s been a beautifully creative thing and opened up possibilities that neither my father
COSTA COSTACUISINE CUISINE
nor I could have ever imagined.” Ellora, who also works as an actress full time is in charge of the administrational aspects of the business and can be often seen waking up at 4am to process invoices and upload on social media before focusing on the other branch of the business. “My domain is the vegan cheese, and his [her father] the tofu – we do swap if things get too repetitive” but Maurelio thrives off the monotonous tasks, “I wake up at around 5.30, get ready, have a cup of tea – rinse out the soaked soya beans and start blending. I’ll then make tofu till it’s time to call it a day… I really enjoy it!” The pair are usually never in bed before midnight and with Ellora’s early wake-up call it’s no wonder she regularly warns new-starters to be prepared not to sleep very much and states that you must “pick a good, fun and reliable partner” and to make sure to allocate time off, regardless if you’ve finished the to-do-list or not – “it’s never ending! So, be prepared to let it go, stay on top of the boring things and when demand outweighs possibility for supply – get help.” For someone so inexperienced before now, Ellora has a true grasp on what it means to be an entrepreneurial start-up founder, but she hasn’t always been that way. “I stumbled into this so naively; it had been a real challenge to negotiate everything that needs to be done. But you must always remember why you’re doing it. Especially today with the topic of sustainability – it’s very hard not to be a hypocrite, so try not to beat yourself up too much, just do your
best, your bit… try to keep grounded and remember that you are trying – which is all any of us can really do!”. Utilizing his past business experiences, Maurelio has been a steady hand for Ellora throughout the business process but it even came as a surprise to him how fast things snowballed for the’artyvegan. “I often find myself a bit like a deer in the headlights, as things just move so fast nowadays! Technology has made it so easy for people to access their demand – I wish someone would have taught me how to use a mobile phone BEFORE I started my own journey!” Maurelio chuckles as he taps the device on the table in front of us. “Something else I wish someone told me before I started was - it’s never too late [to start a business]; it’s never too late to say YES at things coming your way. I couldn’t have imagined the possibility of all this, just a few years ago – I was very settled in a different routine and the thought of starting something again… well… it seemed like far too much work, and yet, things happen and opportunities form and sometimes you’ve just got to jump in not knowing the outcome.” Overcoming adversity and facing the unknown is something both father and daughter have learnt to deal with. “As an actress, I get rejection a lot – so I’m glad that I have that to help keep things in perspective for me. I will fail a lot, there’s no control over that, but it’s what you do after… that’s the most important thing. Dusting yourself off and trying and trying again means, fingers crossed – you’ll fail a little smaller next time.” Ellora expresses with a hint of excitement for the future in her voice. Working tirelessly every day the duo is taking small steps to grow into a larger company. The ultimate aim: a zerowaste plant-based production company. “We are slowly putting the action steps in place that can help us become a completely zero-waste company” one of the two comment with the other agreeing as they speak. “We are working on an initiative that allows people from vulnerable backgrounds, who have an interest in food to work with our fully edible waste and make ‘free-food’ for the homeless and others in need. Our company is one for those who can afford to buy our products, and to utilize our waste for those who can’t.”

a Sala have always been known for a vast menu that caters to all… something for everyone. Well now they truly live up to that reputation following the launch of their new vegetarian & vegan menu. Gone are the days of one vegetarian option appearing on a menu and vegans having to visit vegan-only restaurants. More and more eateries are offering a vast variety of options for plant-based diets. La Sala have teamed up with ‘Beyond Meat’ offering plant-based meat meals like you have never seen before. Beyond Meat believe there is a better way to feed the planet and by shifting from animal to plant based meat we can address four growing global issues; human health, climate change, constraints on natural resources and animal welfare. With a mission so prevalent in today’s world we had to see what the hype was all about!
LA SALA HAVE TEAMED UP WITH ‘BEYOND MEAT’ OFFERING PLANT-BASED MEAT MEALS LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. To start our Beyond Meat experience we commenced with the Beyond Steak Tartare boasting Ground Beyond Meat, Capers, Gherkins, Olives & Traditional Spices served with Hand Cut Fries, Mixed Salad and Vegan Bread. So, what is Beyond Meat made of you might ask? Protein, fat, minerals, carbohydrates and water are the five building blocks of meat, Beyond Meat sources these building blocks directly from the plants to create delicious, mouth-watering plant-based meat. They use a variety of plant proteins

COMPASSION PROTEIN, FAT, MINERALS, CARBOHYDRATES AND WATER ARE THE FIVE BUILDING BLOCKS OF MEAT, BEYOND MEAT SOURCES THESE BUILDING BLOCKS DIRECTLY FROM THE PLANTS TO CREATE DELICIOUS, MOUTHWATERING PLANT-BASED MEAT.
BY SHIFTING FROM ANIMAL TO PLANT BASED MEAT WE CAN ADDRESS FOUR GROWING GLOBAL ISSUES; HUMAN HEALTH, CLIMATE CHANGE, CONSTRAINTS ON NATURAL RESOURCES AND ANIMAL WELFARE. such as peas, mung bean, fava bean, brown rice and sunflower to deliver greater or equal levels of protein than their animal-based counterparts. The minerals used deliver the nutrients you expect from meat, such as iron, and wake your taste buds with each bite. Their blend of carbohydrates helps hold the ingredients together providing just the right amount of texture. Plus, the natural flavours and fruit and vegetable-based colours deliver a meaty taste without using GMOs. This combined with the fats; cocoa butter, coconut oil, sunflower oil and canola oil are what create the juicy plant-based burgers, beef and sausages that sizzle in the pan, yet all with less saturated fat than their animal counterparts. To put that fact to the test we tried the Vegan Hot Dog topped with Caramelised & Crispy Onions, stewed Red Cabbage, Salad Leaves and Almond Mayonnaise and served with Patatas Bravas. While a hot dog might be something you associate with a trip to the movies or the feria, this was an experience in itself and as a meat eater I was thoroughly impressed and swiftly moved onto the equally impressive Beyond Vegan Burger on a Burger Bun topped with Tomato, Red Onion, Salad Leaves & Chipotle Mayonnaise served
with Coleslaw and Hand Cut Fries. Beyond Meat claims to deliver the meaty experience without the compromise, and this alongside La Sala’s talented kitchen team seems to be a match made in heaven. Following our Beyond Meat journey we sampled two other plant-based alternatives on the menu; the Chickpea & Seitan Stew made with Mixed Vegetables, Tomatoes and Garlic served with Quinoa and the Jack Fruit Curry with Coconut Milk, Red & Green Peppers, Baby Corn, Shitake Mushrooms and Broccoli served with Basmati Rice. The latter was our designer’s absolute favourite and provides a delicious alternative to the Beyond Meats.

BLU`61 Blue cheese pasteurized cow's milk matures for two months alternating ripening days submerged in Raboso Passito IGP - strong red wine from the region - and days of drying on a wooden board in the cellar. Once it has reached its ripening point, meaning it has reached a creamy and melting texture, it is decorated with candied cranberries as if it were a cake.
A UNIQUE CHEESE It has a surprising appearance; a burgundy-red exterior and an ivory interior broken by blue veins and adorned with sugar-coated red cranberries. Taste wise, the presence of penicillium is vibrant and accompanied by a sweet cherry touch. There is a perfect balance between the penetrating taste of sweet wine, the creaminess of the paste and the strength of the blue.

A CHEESE WITH HISTORY Blu61 cheese is a very peculiar cheese created in 2011 by Antonio Carpenedo to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his wife Giuseppina. Antonio Carpenedo was a young cheese master in Treviso, Italy. During the many wars and invasions that northern Italy suffered in the 19th and 20th centuries, farmers and peasants used to hide food (among which cheeses) under the remains of “orujo” (grape pomace) to prevent the troops taking their food and leaving them starved for winter. This survival technique gave the cheese a different colour, flavour and texture. In 1974, Antonio Carpenedo was inspired by this to create the first “Ubriaco” (Drunken) cheese for sale. Today Antonio's creativity, allied with the youth of his two children Ernesto and Alessandro, position the cheese factory as one of the most creative and emblematic in the country.
TODAY ANTONIO'S CREATIVITY, ALLIED WITH THE YOUTH OF HIS TWO CHILDREN ERNESTO AND ALESSANDRO, POSITION THE CHEESE FACTORY AS ONE OF THE MOST CREATIVE AND EMBLEMATIC IN THE COUNTRY.
The Carpenedo family suggests serving Blu '61 with a compote of balsamic vinegar and fruit. For drink pairings, try it with a sweet Italian Passito or with another dessert wine.
PAIRING SUGGESTIONS Ideal to drink with a strong wine. It is advisable to remove from the fridge 1 hour before consuming. Cut with a very thin knife or a lyre.
Galera is a food supplier specializing in quality cheeses. They deliver to restaurants and professionals and among its main objectives is to spread the word about quality cheese culture in the province of Málaga.

MALAGA’S CHRISTMAS LIGHTS MOVE TO LIVERPOOL One of Málaga’s biggest attractions at this time of year is the Christmas light show in the city’s Calle Larios. Visitors come from all over to admire the fabulous show with the tunnel of light being one of the main features of the past three years. This year however, the famous tunnel has been sold and moved to Liverpool, UK, where it will become part of the festive display there. To celebrate 15 successful years in business and to publicise this year’s chosen charity, Redline Company hosted the second RedTalks presentations, followed by a lively red and gold themed party. The event championed UNICEF’s new fundraising initiative “For Me and All My Friends” and was attended by over 150 clients, former employees, interns, press, local VIPs, suppliers and friends (and children).
134
Guests were treated to copious glasses of wine, freshly baked pizzas, and an eye-catching birthday cake featuring Redline’s ubiquitous Red elephant mascot. The company used this important milestone to thank everyone who has helped to make Redline the Costa del Sol’s leading marketing agency for 15 years. It was also an opportunity to publicise UNICEF’s new fundraising initiative, the Rescue Kit
Challenge, and present a cheque for 1,515.15€. This will help 505 children with things like measles vaccinations, sachets of therapeutic food, soap, notebook, pens and purifying tablets for up to 767 litres of water. Anyone can help by visiting UNICEF’s website at: www.unicef.es/reto-redline#kit-rescate.

WALK FOR CUDECA More than 2,000 participants of 18 different nationalities were involved in four days of sponsored walks to raise funds for Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice. This was the ninth edition of the 4-day walking event with this year raising a total of €1,404 for the charity. The first group of walkers started with a 30 km route that went through green areas in Puerto Banus and finished in San Pedro Alcantara. On the following days, the walkers took different routes around the area, heading through Altos de Marbella, Nagüeles, Lago de Tortugas, Sierra Blanca and various beaches. Words from the Cudeca Hospice, “Loving thanks are sent to the presidents of Marbella 4 Days Walking and their organisation for keeping their connection with CUDECA and helping to allow us to continue caring for more patients and their families at the end of life.”
The medical colleges of Hamburg (Germany) and Malaga (Spain) qualified Dr Paprottka in the medical field of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery and he is listed as a fully-certified Plastic Surgeon in both countries. GLOBAL BLOCKCHAIN CHALLENGE WINNERS Rewire, a team from Malaga, has won the award for best scalable blockchain project during the Global Blockchain Convergence Congress, with their platform to promote vaccinations in underdeveloped countries. The competition identifies start-ups that fit the 17 UN objectives for sustainable development (2030 agenda). Rewire’s winning project brings gamification and blockchain technology together, presented in a digital platform aimed at improving vaccination rates in underdeveloped countries through a reward system for doctors and patients. The team from Malaga, led by Daniel
Santos and Vicente Ortiz, also aim to improve the security and transparency of records. Since many vaccinations go unused in developing countries, that's where gamification comes in. Via a reward system with tokens or points, doctors will be motivated to administer more vaccines and families will be encouraged to get them. As soon as a patient goes to a
doctor for immunisation or as soon as the vaccine is injected, the agreed tokens are transferred. Users can then store them or use an app to exchange them for traditional currency.

TIME MACHINE SOUNDS Time Machine Sounds S.L. was launched in 2019 by Stephen Robinson, an English resident of Marbella. A biochemist by training, he worked internationally in the pharmaceutical industry before retiring, following which he decided to turn his passion for electronics into a business. Time Machine Sounds (TMS), designs and builds Hi-Fi valve amplifiers by hand. Valve amplifiers reached their peak in the 1950s to 1970s, before they were superseded by less expensive transistor amplifiers. Nevertheless, even today valve amplifiers still command great respect and admiration by the Hi-Fi community for their sonic qualities. TMS amplifiers are of course based on earlier ideas but have been significantly upgraded with proprietary circuitry developed over years as well as top quality modern components from the EU, USA, Canada, Switzerland and Japan. TMS sells on the internet where its’ products in classic and boutique packages can be found at www.timemachinesounds.com. The effortless performance of TMS amplifiers will attract music-lovers of all ages and directions, including professionals who desire to hear their music in almost original quality. Higher power units in the range of 60 to 100 Watt per channel are not only interesting for the domestic setting but also for properties with generous rooms, as well as entertainment venues, such as restaurants and clubs. They are a much-appreciated source of the unique and characteristic “valve sound” in the demanding environment of recording studios. The sound and sight of a genuine valve amplifier today is a special pleasure. Where transistor amplifiers can be unconvincing, TMS amplifiers cover the full sound range from bass to the highest notes evenly and easily, with solid power handling and a 3-dimensional soundstage in which every instrument and vocals can be distinguished. The sound comes across as warm, smooth and realistic and the glowing valves are captivating.
