PUBLISHER’S LETTER
An insight into may
It’s officially spring and this month we are proud to showcase the most stylish collections from Marbella’s hottest fashion boutiques in our “Viva la Villa” photo shoot. The beautiful Villa del Mar at the Marbella Club Hotel provided the location and the acclaimed photographic team; Bodakids, captured the essence of the season in every shot. Following the opening of her first independent boutique, Society Marbella caught up with the lady of the moment, Elizabeth Hurley for an exclusive interview discussing everything from her stint on the hit TV show, Gossip Girl, ex-boyfriend Hugh Grant, her new beau cricketer Shane Warne and her successful beachwear collection. May appears to be a month for exclusives. Not only can we can reveal to you Aqwa Mist the latest addition to the coast’s biggest success story that is Sala Group, we are also delighted to showcase Marbella’s hottest beach club boutique, The Edit, located at the newly refurbished, redesigned and rebranded Sala Beach, and Glow, Playa del Duque’s contemporary wellness and fitness centre which has recently come under new ownership. This month we also had the pleasure of sampling the exquisite cuisine available from the Puente Romano Hotel’s newest gastronomic creation, Namazake. Appropriately named after a type of sake, the Japanese eatery boasts the largest selection of sake on the coast and what can only be described as the best Tatsoi salad I have ever tasted. On the subject of the Puente Romano Hotel, SOCIETY MARBELLA would like to congratulate Public Relations & Events Manager, Tara Lorimer on the birth of her baby girl. If you are already thinking about the summer season ahead of us, turn to page 64 for some humorous tips from bronzed beach bum, Giles Brown. Probably worth a read before you make your way down to the various opening parties to avoid a sartorial nightmare. Until next time…

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT
This month we turn the spotlight on British beauty, Elizabeth Hurley
This month Society Marbella had the pleasure of conducting an exclusive interview with supermodel, actress and entrepreneur Elizabeth Hurley following the launch of her new Marbella Boutique.
Hi Elizabeth, it’s fantastic to have you back on our TV screens, did you enjoy filming Gossip Girl? Filming Gossip Girl was a blast. I play Diana Payne, a self-made media mogul with questionable morals. I’ve played a few villains in my time and love it – less acting required. Just kidding. Your character storyline involves a relationship with the very gorgeous, Chace Crawford, that must have been tough?! Chace is a lovely man and we had a lot of fun filming together. It was strange at first to be playing opposite someone young enough to be my son….but I coped! How have you found the American response? Do you enjoy spending time in New York? I have always loved filming in New York and a lot of Gossip Girl is filmed on the Upper East side – so dangerously close to

my favourite shops. A show like Gossip Girl really appeals to young people so I have a whole new audience now. Do you have any more television appearances lined up? I just finished a 22-week run on Gossip Girl, so I’m not looking to make a big commitment to anything in the immediate future, even though I loved acting again and Gossip Girl was a blast. All my younger girlfriends and gay friends adore the show. As well as a successful acting career you also own your own beachwear collection, what inspired you to launch Elizabeth Hurley Beach? I decided to venture into Beachwear, not only because I’ve always been obsessed with holiday clothes, but also because it’s an area where women, regardless of shape or size, can either look amazing or really get it wrong. I
like to come up with styles, prints and colours that make people look great and make women feel fabulously sexy at any age. I get inspired whenever I see a well dressed woman on vacation. I spend all my holidays looking at how women dress and feel on the beach. What kind of woman do you design for? I design for women aged 18 months to infinity! I am as happy when sexy young women buy my bikinis as I am when fabulous seventy-year-olds look gorgeous in my kaftans. I’d like women to say that they made a good investment when they buy my beachwear and feel as good as they can on vacation when they wear the clothes. Women respond really well to the line because I’ve taken a lot of care to ensure that the swimwear fits really well and the cover-ups aren’t frumpy. Many women are pleased to find that the beach clothes make them look and feel sexy, even if they’re quite

covered up. I concentrate a lot on kaftans, tunics and sarongs, and make them in gorgeous prints and colours, with hand beading and semi-precious stones. It’s a great way to look fabulous without being too exposed. You are about to open your first boutique in Marbella, can you tell us about it? Yes, that’s correct – I have opened my Elizabeth Hurley Beach boutique in Marbella. This is our first stand alone store and I’m very excited. I shall be hosting a party in the store in early June. The collection is very glamorous so is perfect for the ladies of Marbella. We will also sell my adorable kids collection for little girls aged 18 months to 13 years. You’re involved with a number of charities, is there one that is especially close to your heart? Estee Lauder’s daughter-in-law, Evelyn Lauder, co invented the Pink Ribbon
in 1992 and formed the Breast Cancer Research Foundation the following year. Every October, I go round the world raising funds and awareness for the foundation. We’ve raised over $320 million to date and fund 162 research scientists. I am passionate about talking to women about their breast health. We’re all scared of breast cancer, but we now know that if a localised breast cancer tumour is detected early, it is 90% curable. That’s why it’s so important to get the message out and tell every woman to see their doctors regularly and get a mammogram every year if over the age of 40. I know many women who discovered their own tumours by self examination. It is one of the most important things a woman can do for herself once a month and it’s free. Your doctor can show you how to do it and it should be done at the same time of the month, every month.
Elizabeth wears Mimosa one piece in Aubergine by Elizabeth Hurley Beach
What is a day in the life of Liz Hurley? No day is typical; I may fly to New York to shoot a campaign or somewhere hot for a bikini shoot, or be chained to my desk. My son and I usually go away most half-terms and during the three big school holidays. We love to travel and most of my work can be done remotely anyway. I am very hands-on with my beachwear and also the running of my farm. However, my son Damian gets virtually all my time when he’s not at school. Unless there’s an emergency on, I try not to work between picking him up from school and bed time. We do piano and guitar practice, the dreaded maths homework, supper, bath, reading and bed together. You also have a bed linen collection? What made you decide to branch out into bed linen? I’m launching a beautiful collection of bed linen in late May, which will initially

be at the House of Fraser stores. I am very pleased with it. We spend a third of our lives in bed so I think they should be beautiful! You became a mother to your son Damian in 2002, how does Damian cope with your lifestyle? Do you think he will follow you into the world of showbiz? Damian spent a month or so with me in New York over the summer and loved it. He made his own short movie and ran my Gossip Girl lines with me every night. He thought it was the most exciting thing that ever happened. He got to be in my trailer and hang out on a film set, which is what he has longed for his entire life. What kind of mother would you say you are? I adore my son and we are very close. I am more like an Italian mother than an English one and spoil him a lot. I’m very strict with manners and I think he is very well behaved. He has been very well socialised from a young age and I can take him anywhere. As well as being a mother, you are also Godmother to Patsy Kensit and Liam Gallagher’s son Lennon, it is rumoured that you are also godmother to two of
20
David and Victoria Beckham’s sons, Romeo and Brooklyn. Do you have the opportunity to see a lot of the Beckham’s? I am not Godmother to any of David and Victoria Beckham’s children – I just attended their baptisms! I am Godmother to Lennon though, and he’s a lovely boy. You have spent the majority of your life in the spotlight, was it difficult to shed the ‘Hugh Grant’s girlfriend’ tag? Well, Hugh and I split up twelve years ago, so I think that’s long gone now. Some people may be unaware that you founded a film production house with Hugh Grant, Simian Films, which coproduced both Extreme Measures and Mickey Blue Eyes, do you prefer an on or off screen role? I produced two movies and it was an incredible amount of work, but extremely satisfying. The skills I learnt have definitely helped me with my beach business – the process of development, pre-production, production, post-production and marketing are pretty much the same, no matter how diverse the product. I probably prefer on-screen though.
You and Hugh dated for 13 years and have openly admitted to remaining close friends, do Shane and Hugh get along? I’m glad to say that Hugh and Shane get on very well and often play golf together. You announced your engagement to cricketer Shane Warne last year, how did you meet? We met through mutual friends at the Goodwood races in the summer of 2010. How are the wedding plans coming along? We haven’t set a date yet but talk about it a lot! What are your plans for the future? Any surprises we should watch out for? My future plans are as chaotic as ever. We are now juggling school dates from Shane’s children in Australia alongside Damian’s here, while working all over the globe and trying to have fun too. It’s a good challenge to have! The Elizabeth Hurley Beach boutique is open now and is located at Conjunto Benabola, Bloque 7, Local 1-A, Puerto Banus 29660 Marbella (Malaga) España.

Nº6 R.I.P BY RITA ORA FT. TINIE TEMPAH
After smashing into the UK charts featuring on the No.1 hit Hot Right Now, Rita Ora prepares to release her debut UK single R.I.P on May 6. The track was written by Young Money superstar Drake, produced by dubstep lords Chase & Status and pop powerhouse duo Stargate and also features the Prince of UK hip hop Tinie Tempah. Both sides of the Atlantic have joined forces to create an explosive hit that is fast making Rita the jewel in the Roc Nation crown.
Little Broken Hearts is the stunning new album by Norah Jones, produced by Danger Mouse, aka Brian Burton, featuring songs co-written by Jones and Burton. Jones drew the inspiration for the album cover from the vintage movie posters that adorn Burton’s Los Angeles studio. “Brian has this great collection of Russ Meyer posters in his studio,” explains Jones, “and this particular one, called Mudhoney, was right over the couch where I sat every day. I always was looking at it and thinking ‘that’s so cool I want to look like her!’ I remember staring at the poster the whole time we made the record. It’s a great visual.”

Spears’ fiancé has petitioned to be added by the court as the pop singer’s co-conservator, along with her father Jamie Spears. Jamie has held legal control over Britney since early 2008, when her downward spiral left her incapable of handling her finances or medical decisions. ONE TO WATCH!
Each month SOCIETY MARBELLA shares a secret with you. It may be the freshest music artist, an exciting new designer or the next A list actress, but whoever it is, you know they are one to watch. This month, SOCIETY MARBELLA has its eyes on actress, JUNO TEMPLE. Image courtesy of Solarpix
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
have been spending ALOT of time together recently, so it’s no surprise that the world has gone into gossip overdrive as to whether they are a little more than friends. Whether they are or they aren’t, if Kanye was hoping to keep his new lady under wraps, maybe he should ask her to keep her mouth shut! When Kim was asked on The Today Show if the rumours were true, she responded; “Kanye and I have been friends for years,” nailing the line given to her by her PR team.“You never know what the future holds.” Hmmm… I think we can guess now!?
Juno Temple’s surname probably rings some bells; this rising starlet is the daughter of film director Julien Temple, who began his career with short films featuring the Sex Pistols, and continued with various off-beat projects, including The Great Rock And Roll Swindle, Absolute Beginners and a documentary film about Glastonbury. The actress was named ‘Juno’ after her parents took a visit to the Grand Canyon during the pregnancy, and found they were standing on a butte of Cape Final known as Juno Temple. Her family moved to America, where she spent the first four years of her life, before returning to England and settling in Somerset. At age four, Juno decided she wanted to be an actress after her father showed her Belle et la Bête by Jean Cocteau. Temple began her career as a child actress in 2000 when she played Emma Southey in Pandaemonium. Her father had cast her in his film Vigo aged nine, but her role was cut out of the film. At age 15, she told her parents that she was serious about pursuing an acting career, so her mother took her along to an open audition for Notes on a Scandal, and Juno was successful in winning the role of Cate Blanchett’s daughter. This was her big break and led to a role in another high profile film, Atonement with Keira Knightley.
explained representative, Cynthia Pett-Dante. Jewellery designer Robert Procop of Beverly Hills, California, designed the diamond engagement ring after a yearlong collaboration with Pitt, his representative said. Pitt “wanted every aspect of it to be perfect, so Robert was able to locate a diamond of the finest quality and cut it to an exact custom size and shape to suit Angelina’s hand,” the representative explained. “Brad was always heavily involved, overseeing every aspect of the creative design evolution. The side diamonds are specially cut to encircle her finger.”
Throughout her early career, she has won critical praise for several supporting roles, one reviewer said that she played her part in Notes on a Scandal with “petulance and angst”, while her performance as Lola Quincey in Atonement was called “impressive.” She also had roles in St Trinians, Wild Child, The Other Boleyn Girl and Year One alongside Jack Black and Michael Cera. Juno moved to Los Angeles in 2009 to help take her career to the next level and also to be with her boyfriend. In 2010 she starred in Abe Sylvia’s Dirty Girl, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, co-starring Milla Jovovich, Jeremy Dozier, William H. Macy, Mary Steenburgen and Tim McGraw. Temple achieved her biggest role to date in Paul W.S. Anderson’s 3D film adaption of The Three Musketeers in 2011 as Anne of Austria, the Queen Consort of France. The film also starred Logan Lerman, Orlando Bloom, Milla Jovovich, Christoph Waltz and Mads Mikkelsen. The led to being cast in The Dark Knight Rises, as a “street-smart Gotham girl” and a role in the lesbian lycanthropic tale Jack & Diane. It might be a tough world out there, but we have a feeling this actress will go far.

DINE UNDER THE STARS By Christie Holland
C
elebrities hold the authority over the television, film and fashion world, however in the past decade the stars have made their mark on another industry; gastronomy. Nevertheless, the history of celebrity-owned restaurants is fraught with failure, there is a long list of celebrity owned eateries that have closed prematurely including Britney Spears’s NYLA in New York, which lasted less than a year, and Jennifer Lopez’s Madre’s in Los Angeles, which lasted from 2002 to 2008 before it too shut its doors. However there are an acclaimed array of eateries that do their famous counterparts justice. In 1994, Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro joined forces with culinary genius Nobuyuki Matsuhisa to open Nobu in New York City’s Tribeca neighbourhood. The current Japanese brand now boasts over 25 locations around the world. De Niro followed Nobu with the Mediterranean-inspired Tribeca Grill and an Italian restaurant,
Locanda Verde, all of which helped revive the Tribeca region and add to the actor’s bottom line. Matsushia currently serves as the executive chef of Nobu Las Vegas, which is also the sole US Nobu to earn a Michelin star. De Niro can afford to be picky with his film projects considering Nobu’s Tribeca outlet alone takes in annual revenues of about $8.5 million, of which $1.7 million is profit, proving the acclaimed chef and the Hollywood star are a true gastronomic power couple. Another collaboration that appears to have paid off is the insanely hip gastro pub, The Spotted Pig, co-owned by Jay Z, Bono and Mario Batali among others. Awarded a Michelin star and known for its abundance of daily A-listers, this refreshingly unpretentious locale serves excellent quality in a humble setting. The executive chef, British born April Bloomfield, is famed for her chargrilled burgers which are unquestionably worth the exceedingly long wait required for a table.

Ashton Kutcher may play dumb on television but he’s certainly on to something when it comes to restaurants. The Two and a Half Men actor is behind the Dolce Group which includes Dolce, (imagine old world Italy meets modern chic), Geisha House, a two story Japanese fusion and sushi restaurant, anchored by an imaginative Californian take on traditional Japanese cuisine and an incomparable selection of rare sakes, Les Deux, the famed Hollywood haunt and notorious celebrity hideout serving ultra-exclusive clientele, and most recently Rare 120°, an exclusive American steakhouse in The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Some may argue that it is the brains behind The Dolce Group, founders Lonnie Moore and Mike Malin, that guarantee the group’s success, however we can im-

agine having Ashton’s name attached is quite an attraction. A diamond in the rough, much like its high profile proprietor, Tagine is nestled deep in the heart of Beverly Hills serving exquisite and authentic Moroccan cuisine in a romantic, candlelit environment. Owner Ryan Gosling opened the first fine dining Moroccan restaurant in Los Angeles, with friend Chris Angulo. The varied menu combines historic recipes with modern sensibilities to reflect a fresh perspective, earning its status as Beverly Hills best kept secret. FINE ART RESTORATION maintenance and sale
After a whirlwind couple of months, from applying and eventually winning Marbella Makeover, there has been no chance for Helen Powell’s feet to touch the ground. As soon as she discovered she had won, we whizzed her down to Mark Dental Clinic where Sam, who will be Helen’s primary dentist, carried out a consultation to see what procedures will be required on Helen’s teeth.
A
fter a few minutes of silence and a lot of probing around in her mouth, Sam pointed out that Helen has great oral hygiene. Her gums are healthy, with no disease evident in the bone or gums themself and no noticeable gaps in her mouth. So it’s clear that Helen has looked after her teeth and gums over the years. Kudos Helen. The main problems that Sam found with Helen’s teeth are that they are fairly yellow and her gums are
32
slightly receding caused not only by age, but also rigorous tooth brushing. After describing how she would always purchase ‘hard’ toothbrushes in order to remove as much plaque as possible, Sam advised against this, explaining that ‘soft or medium’ toothbrushes are perfectly adequate for teeth cleaning and would prevent further regressing of the gums. We learn something new everyday! We were informed that Helen has six veneers on her top row of teeth, a

21st birthday present from her parents to cover one of her early insecurities. As an infant, Helen was given Tetracycline antibiotics orally, a side effect being teeth discolouration, causing her teeth to grow through black. Therefore, she begged her parents for veneers on her top teeth to cover the staining from the antibiotics. Sam is going to replace the veneers on her top row of teeth with new ones or with crowns; this will all depend on the state of the teeth underneath. Her bottom teeth are also slightly discoloured from the Tetracycline antibiotics, therefore Sam is going to put veneers on her bottom teeth to make them more cosmetically appealing. He is also going to replace her silver fillings with white ones.
Whilst checking her bottom teeth, Sam noticed a sizeable hole in the first molar on the left. While Helen insisted there was little pain or discomfort from the tooth, Sam took an X-ray and found a wideopen cavity, exposing the nerve. This allows food and bacteria to become lodged in the cavity, and can cause pain and infection. To prevent this, Sam will do a root treatment on the tooth to ensure her mouth is infection free. This is especially important for when she has her surgeries with Ocean Clinic. In the June issue, you will be able to see Sam fixing the broken tooth cavity in preparation for her new teeth.

ALL IN THE NAME OF
T
o kick-start Helen’s body makeover, we took her to the new Lipo Room at the Advanced Hair Studio to try out their new Universal Contour Wrap. The treatment guarantees at least a 6” loss in just two hours, and the average loss for just one treatment is between 10-14 inches. The guarantee lasts for 30 days so you can continue to reap the benefits long after leaving the salon. Lynn explained that unlike other body wraps where you do not notice any substantial results until you have endured a number of treatments, the Universal Body Wrap delivers instant results and a course of only three treatments is recommended to acquire the upmost benefits, followed by a maintenance program. Developed back in the early 90’s by Dr Richard Strem, the Universal Contour Wrap was then put to the test at the University of Westminster and became the first body wrap to have unequivocal scientific back up. After Lynn asked Helen a series of medical questions to ensure she could go ahead with the treatment, she began by taking acollection of measurements so accurate inch loss could be measured. The next step was to wrap warm clay soaked bandages all around Helen’s body. The unique blend of mineral rich clay combined with the specialist body wrapping helps to cleanse and detoxify the body while actively compressing the soft fatty tissues to create instant and lasting inch loss. Once the bandages had been applied, Helen stepped into a very interesting looking silver suit. The
things we do for beauty?! Lynn then instructed her to mount the vibrating plate to raise her body temperature and kick-start the regime. After approximately ten minutes, Helen was then able to lie down and relax for a further 45 minutes. The bandages were then removed and the measuring process recommenced. On completion of the measurements it was revealed that Helen had lost a staggering eight inches, after only one treatment! Lynn then went on to explain the recommended après-care program. An exfoliating scrub is available to prolong the effects and sustain inch loss, the energising seaweed body scrub rubs off dead, dull skin cells whilst nourishing sunflower oil reduces moisture loss, reconditions, protects and soothes the skin. This is followed by a detoxifying shower gel ideal for revitalising and refreshing the skin. Packed with an array of active ingredients, this daily product is aimed at enhancing inch loss throughout the detoxification and hydration. Finally, a dynamic, firming lotion containing PEPHA-TIGHT, an algae based skin tightener that creates a thin layer on the skin’s surface, is used to achieve further tightening and toning results. An additional benefit of this key ingredient is that it works long term to reduce the effects of oxidative stress on the cells, thus aiding a more youthful, firm appearance and texture to the skin. What more could you ask for?! Lipo Room Tel. 952 906 688

Sleeping Beauty Health and Beauty Editor, Nicola McGeorge, shares her tips for the perfect slumber – please note that this was written at 3.3Oam!
I
love sleeping, I adore my bed and I definitely DO NOT like being woken up, as my long suffering boyfriend has witnessed on many occasions, yet achieving a good night’s sleep is something that does not come easily to me. Like many of you out there, I can lie awake for hours, tossing and turning before the sandman finally blesses me with a visit. If I am lucky enough to fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow, you can guarantee that I will be awake again around 3 and then every hour thereafter.
A MUST-DO LIST - Spend a few minutes before bed writing down your concerns, stresses and plans for the following day, then move onto hopes or things you’re thankful for, so that you can give your mind a rest while you are sleeping.
After many years of trial and error, the following is what works for me:
BLOCK OUT LIGHT - Creating a room that’s ideal for sleeping means making it as dark as possible. I am very light sensitive and have been known to walk around a hotel room, covering up all the red lights from electrical equipment, putting a towel by the door to stop any light coming underneath and even taking a travel blackout blind to tape to the window. Yes, I am that obsessed! My life saver has to be my eye mask. I have tried every brand out there, yet nothing beats The Escape Sleep Mask, which features an interior eye chamber to ensure absolutely no pressure on the eyes while maintaining 100% light blockage. dreamessentials.com. This is the mother of all eye masks, nothing is getting through this baby.
SET A REGULAR BEDTIME - Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every day. Being consistent reinforces your body’s sleep-wake cycle and helps promote better sleep at night. If you’re getting enough sleep, you should wake up naturally without an alarm. If you need an alarm clock to wake up, you may need to set an earlier bedtime.
REDUCE NOISE - Living in a community, especially during the summer months, means noise can be an issue. How many of you have been woken up when a group of teenagers decide to skinny dip in the community pool at 2am or when your neighbour decides that 5am is a good time to play house music. This is when earplugs become your best friend.
If I had my way, I would sleep for 12 hours every night, but a job, a puppy and an early bird other half means this is out of the question. Therefore, good ‘quality’ sleep is a necessity and I will do ANYTHING to achieve it. My friends call me a princess, due to my reliance on eye masks and ear plugs, not to mention my travelling black-out blind. Laugh you may, but you wouldn’t be if you met the Nicola that has not had any sleep. This Nicola can switch between a violent rage to weeping in minutes.
40
WIND DOWN TIME - 90 minutes before you go to bed, start to relax. Do not participate in anxiety-inducing activities like checking emails or watching the evening news.
Opt for foam ones, my favourite is Earfit Foam Earplugs, but El Corte Ingles stock a similar brand. MAKE SURE YOUR BED IS COMFORTABLE – It was rather expensive, but my Tempur mattress and pillow were worth every penny. The mattresses conform exactly to your shape, and adjust when you move. Automatically adapting to support your exact body shape and sleep position. So whether you sleep on your back, side or stomach - or if you change positions during the night - the mattress fits you as you sleep. You get the support you need in any position CAMOMILE TEA - This has a calming and soothing effect on the body and is a traditional sleep-inducing remedy. I have a cup about an hour before bed. LAVENDER – This aromatherapy oil helps increase low-wave sleep. Try 6 drops in a warm bath before bed, or 1 drop on your pillow. My favourite method is to use a diffuser, which breaks up the lavender into tiny little droplets and fill your bedroom with such a wonderful scent. I recommend contacting Michelle Julian from Young Living Essential Oils on + 34 695 845 416 or: michellejulianyoungliving@gmail.com You’re not doomed to toss and turn every night. Everyone has a different underlying reason why they are having sleeping problems. Experiment with the above steps and see what works for you.

Protect your hair and let it shine forever with Wood Salon’s latest treatments.
W
ith Summer nearly upon us, now is the ideal time to start preparing ourselves. While everyone is very aware about protecting the skin, our hair is often neglected. Sun, chlorine, and salt water all damage strands, leaving them prone to breakage and split ends. Just a few easy steps before it really hots up will ensure minimal damage and provide hair with the extra care it needs during summer months.
We at Society Marbella are all for prevention rather than cure. Now is the time to start scheduling ‘in salon’ deep conditioning treatments with Wood Salon, as they are much more powerful than anything that can be done at home.
“We are inundated with clients wanting our ‘in salon’ treatments.”
explains owner Zoe Woods “Our clients walk out with glossy, gorgeous hair and all their friends want to know their secret. We cater for all budgets, treating each client as an individual and prescribe a treatment that is suited for their hairs’ particular needs. We even offer half price off the colour treatment if taken on the same day that we colour the clients hair, as we know how much difference it makes.”
The talented team at Wood Salon offer a variety of treatments. A firm favourite of our Beauty Ed, is the Redken Time Reset line, a hair care collection and in-salon service that targets “ageing” hair. Think this is just
for the more mature clients? Wrong! If you have very long hair, think just how old the tips are? Heat styling in particular will take its toll, whether you’re 25 or 55. Redken identifies five signs of ageing hair; texture change, diminished density, fragility, dryness and dullness and their new services and products were developed to help combat these telltale issues. The line is infused with camelia oil (to soften brittle hair and add shine), peptides and ceramides (to strengthen and repair), green tea and cationic UV filters (to prevent future damage) together with Redken’s proprietary ingredient Intra-Cylane which aims to fill in gaps on the cuticle layer to plump up fine hair. In Wood Salon, the Time Reset service will include a shampoo followed by an application of Time Reset Filler Shot Phase (a concentrated Intra-Cylane treatment), a spray sealer and then a deep filler treatment which lasts up to ten shampoos. Here’s to a wonderful summer¸ just remember… fill your hair with good stuff before you dive into the bad stuff. Wood Salon Tel. 952 771 791/ 645 089 399 wood-hairdressing.com
BRACE YOURSELF FOR A NEW SMILE Dr. Gerhard Steinruck from the Marbella Cosmetic Dental Clinic introduces Dentaline, a new invisible orthodontic system.
BENEFITS FOR YOUR HEALTH Most people think the greatest advantage of orthodontic treatments is aesthetics. However this is just one of the benefits. The functional factor is much more important! Orthodontic treatment plays a preventive role for gingivitis and periodontitis (gum disease.) Crowding of teeth is one of the principal dental problems, causing decay, alterations of the masticatory system, TMJ fuction, headaches and difficulties with speech. These problems can affect the smile and the self-confidence of a patient. The removable Dentaline treatment permits adequate dental hygiene, avoiding and reducing the risk of cavities and gingivitis. It helps to improve TMJ function and solves malocclusion problems, the way our upper and lower teeth adapt to each other.
42
THE BEST ALTERNATIVE TO BRACKETS The Dentaline digitalised orthodontic treatment works through a series of removable, invisible and comfortable aligners individually fabricated for every patient with clear and robust plastic material. The invisible aligners move the teeth little by little, until they have straightened to the required position, in a controlled and progressive way. The aligners are replaced every two weeks. Compared to other invisible alignments, Dentaline uses the latest 3D technology software and a different rigidity of plastic.
DENTALINE TREATMENT ADVANTAGES More comfortable: Inconvenience and pain caused by conventional brackets are avoided and you do not need to worry about wires poking into your cheek. Extremely discreet: The materials are clear plastic tray aligners, hardly noticeable, meaning you don’t have to hide your smile.
Improved oral hygiene: One of the most important advantages of the Dentaline treatment is that it reduces the risk of cavities and gum disease compared to wire braces that trap food and plaque. More practical: The aligners are removable; you can eat and drink whatever you want while the treatment takes place and flossing and brushing your teeth is still possible. Even if you are travelling the treatment can continue, because all the steps are digitalised and all the splints are fabricated at the beginning of the treatment. You are only required to change to the next splint every second week. At a favourable price: As the start of the treatment you get your own virtual quote and treatment plan. The total per jaw varies from €1,000 to €1,500 which is very reasonable in comparison to other systems. BRIGHT EYES
Before
The inside story on what Blepharoplasty (eyelid) cosmetic surgery really means After
I
n December Louise Truelove, Chief Patient Care Coordinator at Aria Medical Group, underwent eyelid surgery, known as a ‘Blepharoplasty’. She takes us through the procedure. How did you know it was time to have surgery? I’m 47 and I felt I looked tired. I’m not overweight and I use high quality skin care products, but I wasn’t able to reverse the bags that had developed over my upper eyelids. Every morning I would have difficulty with my eye makeup too, so it was certainly time to do something about it. Botox and cosmetic creams can help with wrinkles but only surgery can have a long term effect on upper and lower eye bags. Eye surgery can be for lower lids and/ or upper lids – which procedure did you have? I had upper eyelid surgery. I don’t have bags under my eyes, so I just wanted to correct the problem of the excess skin and fat that was weighing down onto my eyelids, which comes with ageing. Talk us through the procedure. After my private consultation with Dr. Marco Vricella, I scheduled my ‘pre op’ tests. These include a blood test, an ECG heart assessment and a chest x-ray;
44
and also a meeting with Damien Moore the Clinical Services Director who went through my medical history and discussed post procedure care – together this took less than an hour, so it’s easy for anyone to balance with home or work commitments. Then on the day of my eyelid surgery, I arrived half an hour before my appointment; in my private room I changed into a theatre gown and then I was taken to the pre-surgical room to meet Dr. Vricella where he marked my eyes with a pen, to show the areas for surgery, and my ‘preop’ photos were taken. In theatre I was given an anaesthetic so I was unaware of the 45 minute procedure; but since it is not a general anaesthetic, I was able to make a quick recovery, without an overnight stay. I spent less than two hours in the recovery room afterwards, before I was given something to eat and I was ready to be collected and driven home by my husband. Tell us about aftercare. There are some stitches where the excess skin and fat is removed. These are covered with adhesive sterile strips, so I had to keep my face dry for a week, so that means being careful in the bath and shower.
After the week, the stitches are removed and the healing tissue is protected with adhesive strips for a further few days. Aria Medical Group is on hand 24 hours a day as part of the aftercare service, to answer any questions. In terms of discomfort, it was very mild. The adhesive strips can itch slightly, but recovery was easy to deal with; I joke that I have had bikini waxes that have been more painful! It takes a week for the bruising to go down, so if you want to have this procedure discreetly and not tell people, then schedule it so you have at least a week when you don’t need to be out meeting people. If it is for an important social occasion like a wedding, then allow at least three weeks for complete recovery. Did people notice the surgery once your eyes had healed? The results are definitely noticeable, but Dr.Vricella prides himself on natural looking results, avoiding the ‘surprised’ look. People notice that my face is younger, healthier looking but they don’t always know exactly why. So, not only do I feel so much more confident and younger but friends comment that I look really well, as if I had just come back from holiday.

Look Younger
A NATURAL FACELIFT THAT LASTS
Sylvia Ormerod reviews The Natural Face Lift Technique, a treatment which promises to leave you looking younger and more relaxed after only six sessions.
T
hroughout my whole life I have been blessed with looking at least ten years younger than my actual age. However, after a few very stressful periods, mainly my daughter’s heart operation, quickly followed by her developing M.E, I am afraid that time quickly caught up with me. Each time
warmed to straight away. She started the session by explaining in depth about this unique concept. It is a natural treatment without the use of surgery, chemicals or machines. The program consists of six sessions each lasting one hour over one to six weeks. Each treatment begins with an examination of the skin
BEFORE
AFTER ders and décolletage. Elsebeth works in silence, with only the soothing sounds of beautiful background music. This is in order to help you fully relax, while also enabling Elsebeth to feel areas of tension. Bliss! The treatment moved onto the massage bed, where the focus turned to my face, ears and even inside my mouth in order to remove any tension around the jaw, I told you this was a unique experience.
sted e T d d an e i r T I looked in the mirror, I liked the person staring back at me less and less, in particular, the lines around my mouth, however I admit my smoking habit does not help. At 74, I know I should be expecting this, but it doesn’t mean I have to like it. I had always promised myself at 40 I would have a facelift, but was never able to afford it, so I when I heard about the Natural Face Lift Technique, it seemed it could be just what I had been looking for.
and underlying tissues. Then the therapist works in-depth with the muscles of the face, scalp, neck and the upper shoulders. The Natural Face Lift Technique helps to soften the signs of ageing that inevitably comes with age, but can also be used to unravel a hard, tired or sour facial expression in young people. Other benefits can be to even out the skin tone, the improvement of scars all over the body and the reduction of tension headaches.
The drive up to the ENN Care Clinic at the Marbella Golf and Country Club sets the tone for the whole experience; beautiful, peaceful and serene. The therapist Elsebeth Nybroe-Nielsen is a glowing bundle of energy whom I
Elsebeth asked me what in particular I didn’t like about myself, explaining that this would help her know which areas to focus on. She then assessed my posture, before swiftly moving me to a chair, where she began working on my shoul-
At the end of my first session I was prescribed an organic whole food supplement to increase my intake of antioxidants to counteract the negative effects of my smoking habit. When cells are provided with sufficient, targeted antioxidants, they can renew themselves quickly. I was also advised to begin a new skincare routine using Elsebeth’s organic, natural skin care products which she had selected for my skin’s particular needs. Ohhh and she told me I had to drink a lot more water… grrrrr I hate water. So, what was the final outcome? I had six sessions over two weeks, after the first treatment my skin was definitely brighter, by the third the lines around my mouth began to soften and after six... wow what a difference. My lines have softened all over, while the puffy areas under my eyes have reduced. In fact, my whole face seems to have lifted. If this is the results after only two weeks, as it takes four weeks for the skin to regenerate, can you imagine what my skin will look like then? On top of all this, I have much more energy as well. Now when I look in the mirror I am a lot more pleased with the woman smiling back at me. Special Offer – course of six treatments paid in advance – €375 (normal price €8O per treatment). Diamonds are Forever
Anthony’s Diamonds have it all. Whether you are looking to purchase some exquisite diamonds or art deco figurines, or simply looking to pawn some of your unused jewellery pieces to generate some extra cash, they can cater to your every need. Society Marbella caught up with owner and manager Anthony Barnes to find out more about this most reputable of businesses. How long has Anthony’s Diamonds been established? We have been established on the coast one way or another since 1983, (says something doesn’t it!), and we have been in our present shop in Fuengirola for 14 years. We are totally committed to serving the people of the Costa del Sol. What made you decide to get into the trade? My family were in the business and I simply followed on, sometimes it’s hard to escape the family business, and looking back in hindsight, I am so pleased I didn’t! Do you deal solely with diamonds or do you stock other items of jewellery? Nearly all of our diamonds are set; engagement rings, bracelets, pendants, earrings, all set in white gold or platinum at a third of the price of high street shops.
How does a pawn loan work? What do you accept? We have lent money on all types of jewellery in the past; watches, cars, boats, art work, paintings, silver, bronzes, I could go on. As long as it has a reasonable value, we are willing to pawn broke it.
What is it that excited you about the jewellery industry? It’s an excellent business to be in, and don’t forget we are three businesses in one, jewellery, antiques and pawn broking services, so there’s never a dull moment, when one business is quiet the other picks up.
How do you determine the value of an item? Again, a lifetime of experience and a very good eye.
Where do you source your jewellery? From all different areas really; refurbishing old jewellery, auction houses, private house calls and the trade itself, it takes a lifetime of experience to spot beautiful and worthwhile pieces. We always want to supply the best for our clientele. With all those precious pieces in your shop, how do you handle the security side of things? We are a very secure shop, as per the rules of the police, and we also have a few extra tricks up our sleeves to make sure that everything in the shop is protected. What can clients expect from an experience at Anthony’s Diamonds? A warm friendly service, and good value for money (what else is there?!)
62
Are pawn shops regulated? All shops have rules and regulations. What impact has the recession had on your business? Have you noticed a new type of client? Since the recession hit, banks won’t loan you money for a new car or to go on holiday anymore. This has forced many people to turn to pawn broking for a quick and simple way of accessing some immediate cash. Tell us a little bit about the Art Deco figurines you stock. I can’t really describe them, you simply have to come and see for yourself. If you like art deco, you’ll love the shop. All are original; there are no reproduction pieces, so you know you are getting something unique.
Since the recession, have you noticed an increase in people buying and selling gold...why do you think this is? People have been motivated to rummage through their jewellery boxes, drawers and cabinets, to create some extra revenue from items that are not wanted or used anymore.
In your opinion, how do you feel the coast has changed in the last 15 years? It’s grown in all ways and judging by the airport, it’s going to keep growing and bringing business. Pawn broking has had something of a chequered reputation in the past, has it been hard to overhaul that? Pawnbrokers have been a part of our society since the Medici family, way back in the 14th century and even before then, it can be very handy at the right time, in particular when people don’t have as much disposable income as they would like. Tell us some interesting items that have been brought to you with a view to pawning them? From jet skis to shrunken heads, the list is too long to mention, but generally speaking, 90% of the business is jewellery, watches and silver. What is next for the business? Stay calm and carry on.
Thanks Anthony, we’re all off to rummage through our drawers for unwanted items. 30 years on the coast is some achievement! Anthony’s Diamonds Avda. Ramon y Cajal 40, Fuengirola Tel. 952 588 795 / 609 529 633 anthonys-diamonds.com

SUMMER
SURVIVAL!
M
ay means the start of the summer season in Marbella and, if the sun drenched shenanigans of 2011 were anything to go by, this year promises to be even more over the top and in your face. Most of Essex is set to decamp to the coast this summer, with three huge Lovejuice parties being held at Sala Beach. “WTF is Sala Beach?” I hear you cry. It’s the old Buddha Beach, which has had a reincarnation over the winter season and now boasts a VIP terrace with great views over the Med, as well as a new pool bar, but still maintaining the same great vibe as last year. Like or loathe it, this season is going to be the summer of The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE for short). The Essex ensemble came, saw and crashed about in their high heels last year, and the ensuing media scrum introduced a new word ‘Marbs’ to the town. This summer, the series is set to be shot in Marbella, so take it from me, you won’t be able to pick up a UK tabloid over the summer months without finding a picture of Arg, (who bears a striking resemblance to a Womble that’s had a makeover) Joey Essex, and the permatanned posse of pneumatic blondes that make up the female contingent of the show. As with everywhere in Marbella, you’ve got to consider what you’re going to wear. And while the ladies can effortlessly slip on a sarong and a straw hat, the beach is a sartorial nightmare for guys. Certain items of clothing on the beach are forbidden. These include football shirts, shorts with your national flag on them and male thongs. Sunglasses are another tricky issue, just be sure that they’re not too big and that you don’t wear them too often, unless you fancy the ‘Rocky Raccoon’ look. Male jewellery also has to be considered. A simple chain or ethnic necklace from Bali is
64
fine, but you want to avoid the ‘Triana’ effect, with half of Fort Knox nestling on your hairy chest. If you’re wealth conscious and want to make sure that everybody knows that you’re loaded, even if you’re in your shorts, go for the biggest, blingest watch you can find. It will earn you immediate fawning attention from the beach staff, and they won’t know that you bought it from a ‘lookie lookie’ man for €50. The next thing to consider is what kind of beach it is that you want. To the uninitiated, it may just seem like a simple strip of sand, but on the coast, the beach is so much more than that. Which playa you hang out at is as important as which restaurant you dine at, car you drive and what designer label you’re wearing. So let me start with the beach rule number one; avoid the beaches west of Cabopino and Bolonia. Now, I don’t hold anything against naturists, no, let me rephrase that, I haven’t got anything against it and at certain times and places nudity is acceptable (streakers at rugby internationals, test matches and any female in the crowd when Brazil are playing, for example), but while it’s every teenage boy’s dream to end up on a nudist beach, the harsh reality of life is that you’re more lightly to be surrounded by German grandmothers than the supporting cast of Baywatch. A successful day at the beach is all a question of location, location, location. You can either choose to base and baste yourself at a beach club or on the sand itself. Which is where we come onto beach rule number two. When you find that pristine stretch of sand, check which day of the week it is. If it’s Sunday, pack up and go home. If you don’t, within half and hour of rolling out your beach mat, applying the Hawaiian Tropic and opening the latest Jackie Collins, you’ll glance up to find yourself surrounded by what looks like the encampment of Attila’s
Giles Brown, Society’s very own bronzed beach bum, has a few tips for the start of summer.
horded, but is, in fact, twenty Spanish families enjoying a Sunday on the playa. As well as the ice boxes, picnic tables, beach umbrellas, folding chairs and emergency kit for the baby, Spanish families love to set up camp 100m from their SEAT’s and then fling open the doors so they can enjoy the music from the car stereo. In the meantime, the kids will be running between the sea and their beach base camp (spraying sand over you, naturally) with whatever stone, bottle or other unmentionable they’ve found. Having decided to stay in the relative safety of the beach bar, your next task is to decide what kind of beach bar you want. You can plump for the luxurious beaches such as Nikki Beach, Ocean Club or Sala Beach, which are all full of beautiful people doing beautiful things to each other. And the seventyyear-old George Hamilton look alike on the sun bed entertaining the eastern European teenager is spending the day with his niece, I assure you. Or you can head for somewhere you can feel the sand between your toes and chill out with a couple of Mojitos, Victor’s, Sonora and Mistral are always popular. Rule number three is always avoid doing anything energetic on the beach. Dancing is certainly out, and can be directly linked to the number of drinks consumed. And the big no-no is water-sports. Rather than be dragged behind a speedboat, far better to stand at the bar watching the action. If anybody asks you why you’re not wind surfing, kite surfing or jet skiing with the rest of them, just explain that you’d love to, but you’re competing in the nationals next week and your coach doesn’t want you to get injured. Follow these golden rules and you’ll be sure to enjoy a fabulous summer on the beach. And I’ll be the one with the Mojito and surf shorts by the bar…

Monthy Legal Advice
Non Residents
Face Extreme Measures Against Tax Fraud On March the 1st a new resolution against tax fraud was published in the BOE, approving and confirming the general guidelines for Annual Tax and Customs Control in 2012. The fight against tax fraud; a key strategy of the Tax Agency in fulfilling its mission of effectively implementing the state tax system; is especially important in our current economic situation and budget deficit, and so is taking extreme priority and force, especially against nonresidents. Non-residents in Spain with tax obligations due to property will now be subject to numerous checks via the Tax Office, other public administrators and the Land Registry, in order to obtain information on ownership and details as to whether the taxpayers are meeting their obligations. In further measures to detect fraud and undeclared rentals the Tax Office will also be verifying energy consumption with electric utilities, to ensure that property use and income is being declared properly. If a breach of tax obligations is detected a notice will be issued demanding the payment of tax for up to 4 years, imposing a penalty for the breach, alongside an increased surcharge of 20% default interest on the total amount. The first notice would be sent to the property address, establishing the law without enforcing it, serving more as a reminder. After 2 further attempts to notify the property owner by mail, the notice would be published in the related Official Bulletin, outlining the legal effects of the communication and setting out all legal deadlines.
Failure to comply with this notice; alongside the penalties and sanctions previously mentioned; could also cause more serious consequences such as the seizure of the property. However, if a non-resident taxpayer decided to rectify this situation before receiving such a notice, then they would not need to pay the penalties described. It is for this reason that it is essential to understand the applicable taxes as a non-resident; highlighting the importance of quick compliance and understanding that Inland Revenue will not accept ignorance as a valid excuse for tax evasion. As a brief reminder, I shall now highlight the basic tax obligations that a non-resident property owner must meet: • Whether a property is owned by an individual or a group (including married couples), each person is considered a separate taxpayer and so they must file separate tax returns. One tax return per person, per property must be filed. • Depending on the property’s purpose, the income is subject to one of 2 different types of tax. - When the property is not rented out, and is used for “own use” this amount will correspond to the Property Value (IBI), generally 2%, and Annual Performance Earned at around 24.75%. - If the property is rented out, the full amount received from any tenants must be declared, specifying and deducting expenses such as community fees or property taxes, and then is taxed at 24.75%. This income is taxed each time it is received and so many statements
will need to be provided, though the income can be accrued to file as one tax return each calendar quarter. • When the total value of assets and rights exceed the limit of 700,000€ (deducting any debts or taxes paid), wealth tax is payable annually on the 31st December, calculated by applying a progressive scale ranging from 0.2% to 2.5%. • If a property is sold and a profit is made, the seller will be required to pay Capital Gains Tax, though it should be noted that they will be required to notify Inland Revenue regardless of whether a profit or loss is made. This tax is determined by calculating the profits made, deducting taxes and excluding interest, and then depending on the acquisition year, it is “corrected” by applying a conversion factor set annually by the State. These factors are just a brief summary of the taxes non-residents are obligated to pay, and after detailing some of the consequences that tax evasion can cause it is very important that these regulations are not breached. Our Tax and Fiscal Department at Lexland Abogados can provide you with a free study of your situation, and help best advice you on how to proceed in the most tax efficient manner. As always, time is of the essence so please contact us today via email at comunicaciones@lexland.es or phone at +34 952 778899.

RENOVATED ART
AND DESIGN GALLERY OPENS ON 15 JUNE N
imrod Messeg of Messeg Design personally invites you to view his exceptional art in his renewed gallery space. Over the years, he has developed the sculpting aspect of his renowned business, which showcases a completely different side of the artist. He is able to create distinctive, unique pieces through his admirable take on textures and shapes, which allows Nimrod to transform this brutal metal into a thing of beauty, never before seen, until now. He wanted to develop the artistic side of his business, creating unique works of art, sculptures of beauty; a natural progression for the artisan designer. Through the development of the machinery, and his heightened sense of style and flair, Nimrod is continuing to sculpt iron into beautiful pieces of art but of a different caliber. While Messeg Design, the more commercial side of designing furniture and banisters continues to go from strength to strength, his sculptures would sit proudly in any home or office as a subtle addition or a main feature. “Sculpting
has become my main area of focus after 12 years of creating forge iron items, which will be evident as you wander through the intimate gallery space.” Nimrod proudly announces.
76
“I have transformed my design furniture showroom into an art gallery to showcase my new venture, which will enforce a huge impact to those who know me and who have seen my studio in the past”. This diverse approach to sculpting iron was a natural evolution from his wellestablished Messeg Design company, of creating bespoke furniture for high-end clients in the Marbella area. The talented team continue to design and manufacture personalised wrought iron pieces, creating custom-made designs.
Open from 10-2 and from 3.30-7.30 Monday to Friday, be sure not to miss the unveiling on 15 June from 8pm. Nimrod Messeg C/Aluminnioi 6, Marbella Industrial Area Tel. 952 857 439 messegdesign.com

TORQUE TALK
Our in-depth motoring review
90
TORQUE TALK
Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the latest MERCEDES SL500 hen the R230 version of the SL W was launched in 2001, it set new standards for the luxury roadster class. Styled as a futuristic interpretation on a classic theme, there was nothing like it on the roads, a great advantage in a world where ordinary cars were becoming far too generic in both proportions and detailing.
More than a decade on, the prefacelift SL from that era still looks sleek, elegant and contemporary. Not for nothing did the R230 SL win the ‘Best Designed Car of the Year’ award from CNBC TV in its heyday. It is no secret that the second facelift of 2008 was never on the cards in
the R230 SL master plan, as its replacement by the R231 was originally slated for 2008/9. This would have made the R230 the shortest-lived SL model ever, given that the original W198 SL of 1954, and the W113 that succeeded it both lasted nine years.
91
TORQUE TALK
In the event, the world financial crisis and dropping sales put the kibosh on the SL’s replacement plans. But given that fresh looking cars sell better in hard times, a hastily cobbled up face-lift was enacted to try and shore up sales. Thus, the R230 SL gained the new-look face and taller bonnet line that was severely at odds with its sleek wedge-shaped body profile. Were it not for this intermediate look, the R231 would be a major styling sea change. However, the facelifted car made an SL with this style of nose a familiar sight, diluting the impact of the R231’s styling. Thus, it now looks more evolutionary than revolutionary. Before the R230 SL, sporting cars leaned too much towards the firm side and thus were tiring over distance, while big, comfortable saloons rolled too much to corner well. The ABC suspension, standard on the R230 SL500 and SL600, and an option on lesser models, was a huge step forwards in ride comfort and body control, and showed that you could
92
combine long distance comfort with class-leading handling and grip. ABC was a technical tour de force that helped the SL win the accolade of ‘Most Technologically Advanced Car of the Year’, from Autocar magazine back in 2002. On paper, the latest SL is cutting edge stuff. 110kg lighter in bodyshell alone thanks to its aluminium and part magnesium bodyshell, and up to 140kg lighter overall in kerb weight, depending on the model. In practice, it is the 1,685kg SL350 that benefits fully from the weight reduction process. At 1,785kg, the SL500, the only variant available on the launch event, weighs around 125kg less than its predecessor. To compliment this newfound agility, the naturally aspirated V6 and twinturbo V8 engines are 30 percent more fuel-efficient, and significantly cleaner too. Part of this advantage comes from on-board systems that stay offline when not in use, the alternator being a good example of this. ECO start/stop is also standard across the board.
In terms of soundtrack when you fire up the SL500, it seems to be all there with the requisite V8 woofle. The V8 rumble is there under acceleration too, albeit in a fairly subdued form. Throttle response, especially in Sport mode, is outstanding with no sign of turbo lag. The massive thrust that hurls you forwards when you push down on the throttle hard leaves you in no doubt that the horses have a pair of turbochargers behind them. Rolling back the years, the M113, 24-valve motor in the SL500 of 2001 produced 306hp with 460Nm of torque, and 0-100km/h took 6.3 sec. At minor facelift time in 2006, the all-new M273 four-cam motor with variable valve timing was a big step up with 388hp and 530Nm. It was enough to drop the 0-100km/h sprint to 5.4 sec. The supercharged version of the M113 motor in the SL55 AMG from 2002 started off with 493hp and 700Nm of torque, with power uprated to 517hp in 2006. The 0-100km/h time of just 4.7 sec and close to 200mph with the top speed limiter
TORQUE TALK removed was supercar killing performance. The second facelift in 2008 saw the debut of the 6,208cc M156 AMG V8 with 525hp and 630Nm of torque. The AMG Performance package with limited slip differential helped traction, and the rapid wet-clutch AMG Speedshift MCT gearbox also helped shave the 0-100km/h sprint to a mere 4.6 sec.
which puts the SL500 in the category of cars with ‘waftability.’ A mere tap on the throttle sees you sailing past other cars with minimal effort, and if you really want to get a move on, the left paddle shifter instantly drops you into the next lower of the seven forward ratios provided by the 7Gtronic Plus automatic. Depending on your road speed, it can even drop down two or three ratios if you really want to fly.
To put all this in perspective, the big numbers for the new SL500 are 435hp at 5,250rpm, accompanied by a very impressive 700Nm of torque between 1,800 and 3,500rpm from its twin-turbocharged, direct injected 4,663cc V8.
All turbocharged motors leave the factory in a fairly mild state of tune, and this one is no exception. There is obviously room for plenty more power and torque to be extracted from this engine, which is just at the start of its life cycle.
Coupled to the lower weight of the new alloy bodyshell, the effect on straight-line speed is significant. The 100km/h benchmark falls in 4.6 sec, with top speed electronically limited to 250km/h. That makes it as fast through the gears as the mighty SL63 AMG. The new AMG roadster will have to be seriously quick to put clean air between them.
In fact, where I found this motor to be the perfect partner for the S500 and ML500 driven last year, in the sportier SL500, it felt a bit restricted in the way it revved out in the last 1,000rpm of its range, half of this being beyond peak power. Less backpressure from a sports exhaust would no doubt wake it up without any fuel consumption penalty.
The vast well of torque, direct fuel injection and the relatively high 10.5:1 compression ratio contribute to the impressive low speed pickup,
Speaking of exhausts, while the engine seemed to make all the right noises, the exhaust is too quiet for a sports car. Even in the long tunnel
outside Marbella, a full throttle squirt did not produce anything close to the V8 thunder I expected. Yet, if I cast my mind back a decade, the M113-engined SL500 was also too quiet in this respect, but the M275 four-cam had a lovely V8 snarl to it and a response character not unlike an AMG-bred motor. Mercedes are undoubtedly saving the ear candy for the new SL63 AMG due before the summer. Another plus of the new BlueDirect engine is the improved fuel economy, which sees a 30 percent improvement to a claimed average of 9.1 L/100km. I could see the tangible benefit during my drive, and most owners will certainly approach this with care. Ironically, it is the healthy torque curve that makes this achievable as the ‘waftability’ factor means you never have to stand on the throttle when just keeping up with normal traffic flow. Where ABC was standard on the SL500 upwards before, the basic suspension system is now a semi-active system with adjustable damping, which I did not get the chance to try.

TORQUE TALK
The third generation ABC suspension takes ride quality to the next level, and even on its optional 19-inch AMG wheels, my SL500 test car smoothly rode some of the roads around Marbella that normally put tremors into the suspension of most cars.
On all types of roads, I felt an additional layer of isolation from the road in the new car. It was like gliding along in a much lower, lighter and pointier Rolls-Royce or Bentley Convertible, and I do not think an SL should be so detached from the experience of driving.
On these familiar Spanish roads, I concluded that the ABC-equipped new SL not only rides better than other sports cars, but actually has a more absorbent secondary ride than many luxury saloons.
A characteristic I noticed time and again on a familiar set of bends was a reaction at the rear axle to closing the throttle in medium and fast bends. This can be clearly felt in the yaw moment induced as a result of rapid forward and diagonal weight transfer.
As impressive as this is, the toll it extracts is increased detachment from the driving experience. It certainly underlines the trend enthusiasts have become increasingly vocal about regarding the increasing level of isolation of modern cars from the road. Iron-fisted body control and impressively low roll angles not withstanding, the combination of majestically well damped ride and the new fuelsaving, electro-mechanical Direct Steer speed sensitive power steering system produces a driving experience rather too aloof and remote for a roadster with sporting pretensions.
94
When I spoke to Klaus Rehkugler, Director of Project Management for the SL, he confirmed my suspicion that this is the subjective manifestation of a computer algorithm designed to minimise fuel consumption and pollution from un-burnt fuel when you come off the throttle sharply. The modern way is highly dependent on lines of code in numerous ECUs for fine-tuning of just about everything. However, I think that the torque reduction algorithm applied
TORQUE TALK by the ECU on the over-run is too sharp, and needs fine tuning to be more progressive in operation. In practice, any actual weight transfer issues are neatly contained by the ABC and ESP systems, but I have never before encountered anything like this in any Mercedes, and it is a feeling I would rather not have to live with. I certainly did not come across this phenomenon in the CL and S-Class cars with this engine, and I can only conjecture that the SL’s shorter wheelbase and significantly lower kerb weight magnify the sudden torque drop effect to the point where it is now noticeable. Taking distinctive styling cues from the Vision SLR Concept of 1999, the R230 SL won European Best Interior Design Award when it was launched in 2001. Like the exterior, this interior has worn well and does not look outdated more than a decade on. That said, the interior of the new SL is not a trend-setter for Mercedes. Instead, it takes the Mercedes sportscar interior styling idioms introduced with the SLS AMG and last years SLK to the next level. In detail terms, the most salient styling feature is the four polished eyeball air vents, which help to visually anchor the dashboard in the horizontal plane. Where the SLS and SLK cabin architecture is based around fairly flat planes, the SL’s interior explores the same theme in a more threedimensional way. This makes the eye and brain work a bit harder to take it all in, and gives the impression of a more interesting and dynamic cabin design. Overall build quality is definitely improved and the new interior feels even more robust. The same goes for the exterior. The doors of open cars tend to sound less substantial when the roof is down, but the doors of the new SL close with an even more convincing sound than before. This is an interesting perception as the aluminium panels of the R231 SL are lighter. The answer lies with the
improved door seals and even better engineering tolerances. The latter contributes to the improved drag coefficient, which is down from 0.29 to 0.27. Useful convenience features are the Magic Sky Control system that darkens and solar insulates the glass panel of the Vario-Roof at the touch of a button, and the poweroperated wind deflector on the rear bulkhead. A new gadget being rolled out across the German premium brands is the foot operated boot-lid opener that senses when the electronic key is within a meter of the car. This al-
lows you to open the boot by sliding your foot under the centre of the rear bumper, and is useful if your arms are full of shopping. Secondary safety is improved despite the lighter construction. Thus the new SL has the best passive crash safety in its class in front and rear as well as side impacts. Ultimately, the new SL500s impressive straight-line urge and superlative chassis ability puts you in awe of its technical achievement, but its aloofness leaves you unable to fall in love with it. Perhaps the majority of customers who will buy the SL500 for what it represents will appreciate it

as a better car, but as a drivers’ car it is simply too detached. The new look is also an acquired taste. Although styling is admittedly a subjective thing, the new car appears contrived and overly aggres-

sive alongside the pure and elegant pre-2008 facelift SL. BMW went through this phase in their Chris Bangle years, and it now seems to be Mercedes’ turn to polarise opinion.
To paraphrase a line from Star Trek,
“It’s an SL, but not as we know it.” It might be a better car in absolute terms, but it is arguably a less good SL. It appears that those of us who want to be emotionally engaged by our cars will have to wait for the forthcoming SL63 AMG to re-ignite the SL spirit we know and love.

OFTEN COPIED but NEVER BEATEN By Laura-Jane Bruce

or more than 14 years, Café Yanx has held a prominent place in the Marbella gastronomy field. Pride of place in Centro Plaza, this American style diner brings a welcome change of classic USA cuisine to the coast, allowing our imagination to take us across the pond. When Society Marbella was offered the chance to sample some of their famous cooking, we jumped at the chance. Even though the establishment is called Café Yanx, it is so much more, with an abundance of dishes perfect for anything from a light snack or a hearty breakfast to a decadent three course meal. The dishes are so varied on the menu that it really is difficult to decipher what you are going to order. We recommend visiting a number of times to sample everything because it is all exquisite. There are two areas in which to choose to dine, in their cosy restaurant surrounded by genuine American memorabilia and televisions showing the latest sports, or out on their sun drenched terrace in the

midst of Marbella life. Yanx are completely committed to high-quality ingredients; using natural chicken, humanely raised, premium ‘gradeA’ well-hung Irish beef and fish that is either longline or hook and line caught. Their daily deliveries of fresh fruit and vegetables direct from local and premium growers mean that you know everything on your plate is created with you in mind. The brains behind this restaurant is David Fisher. Growing up in the business, his family owned restaurants, pubs and nightclubs all over the UK, and this rubbed off on him into his adult life. Studying at a catering college and gaining all the certificates needed to run a top restaurant, David became the head chef, and then
catering manager of three American Restaurants in Norwich. David has been actively working in the trade for over 25 years now, and brings his experience to every service. However, David couldn’t possible take all the credit for the success

From the salad bar, the Saigon chicken salad, consisting of marinated Vietnamese chicken sticks over a lively oriental green leaf salad, noodles and bean sprouts, was wonderfully vivacious and fresh. Described as lively, and rightly so, the vibrancy of the drizzled vinaigrette awakened the sharp leaves and crispy bean sprouts. Our secondary main dish was the aptly named Louisiana sizzlin’ ‘hot’ shrimp, brought literally sizzling out of the kitchen and onto our awaiting plates. obu Matsuhisa, the highly acclaimed creator of the famous Nobu, Matsuhisa and Ubon restaurants, is my favourite chef in the world. His Japanese cuisine is the true pinnacle from which I judge all other gastronomic encounters. So when I heard that Suite and the Puente Romano Hotel had a new Japanese addition within their portfolio I knew I had to sample their latest offering. On arrival at the restaurant, which is conveniently located adjacent to Suite nightclub gently over spilling onto the Puento Romano Hotel courtyard, we were welcomed with a glass of the conveniently titled sake; Ozeki Namazake, which we soon found out was the inspiration behind the restaurants intriguing name. The remarkably knowledgeable bar manager, shared with us an in-depth explanation of sake, which I must admit is one of the few alcoholic beverages I am not overly familiar with. Although sake has been categorized as a wine, its evolution process actually makes it closer to beer making it the perfect accompaniment to our evening’s menu. Namazake’s beverage menu boasts 14 different types of sake including everything from the light and dry, Kyoto Fushimizu to the elegant Nanbu Bijan Junmai Ginjo oozing subtle fruit aromas. If sake all by itself is a little much for your first Japanese encounter why not meet in the middle and sample one of their intriguing cocktails, the Tokyo Bloody Mary containing sake, vodka, tomato, wasabi and soy sauce is a impeccable fusion of traditional and contemporary or for a fruitier alternative we couldn’t fault the Geisha comprising of sake, basil, passion fruit, pineapple and lime. While we were perusing the neverending drinks list our first dish arrived, steamed edamame topped with rock salt and chilli and the Tatsoi Emono Salad. The latter contained cucumber, coriander, tatsoi and the most delicious

seared tuna I have ever tasted, so delicate it fell apart on touch and dissolved the second it met your tongue. I have to be honest, a salad is not usually my dish of choice when I visit any restaurant, let alone a Japanese restaurant but I can say with my hand on my heart that I will not be returning to Namazake without ordering the Tatsoi Salad. Our next arrival was the Namazake Robata, the chef’s assorted selection from the Robata grill. A long narrow platter topped with skewered prawns dressed with leeks, lamb chops, asparagus and chicken all beautifully presented on a
bed of Asian salad was placed before us. Whilst we expected the customary poultry, prawns and vegetables the succulent lamb encased with a peanut butter based sauce was a delightful surprise. A portion of the Chicken Yakitori also accompanied our main dish. Although we had tasted a small sample with our platter, the additional portion was quickly demolished and highly appreciated. As
the skewers of perfection were hastily vanishing what can only be described as the best shrimp on the coast arrived at our table. As an authentic Japanese dish that has made its way onto a assortment of fusion and international menus, shrimp tempura is a treat that I enjoy on quite a regular occasion so I wasn´t as animated about this plate as I had been the aforementioned. However, this all changed when I took a bite. The crunchy, light and almost buttery coating wonderfully surrounded the tender, delectable interior, sincerly the best shrimp tempura I have ever encountered.
After devouring our main dishes we received a selection of Nigiri Sushi and some Namazake style sashimi. The latter, Hamachi, was finished with miso powder, lime, chive and sesame oil. One of the guests at our table had previously informed us that sushi wasn’t his usual dinner choice so I was intrigued to see how he would react to the eel, mackerel, butterfish and sea bass nigiri before us. “I’m converted,” he exclaimed after one bite. Whilst allowing my food to settle I took a wander around the stunning interior taking a moment to admire the authentic and contemporary décor. The hostess explained that Namazake was currently
open Tuesday- Sunday and that they serve food from 8pm until midnight, “the weekend atmosphere is really electric,” she described, “the guests at Suite
and Namazake intermix, drinking and enjoying the atmosphere in both establishments. We even offer
the option to enjoy sushi at the bar or at the tables at suite if you do not fancy a full sit down meal.” As I was walking back to the table, convincing myself that I had no room for desert I smelt a waft of sweet caramel, quickly establishing that this was the irresistible caramel and sake reduction accompanying our first dessert; lychee and coconut Chupa Chups. “In my opinion, this was the best dish of
the evening.” my colleague announced, while it was lusciously tasty I sat contemplating whether the shrimp tempura or the Tatsoi salad would receive my gold status. Our second dessert, Pistachio Texture, was equally as enjoyable and perfectly accompanied by green tea ice cream, a refreshing conclusion to an incredible meal. I think Nobu Matsuhisa better watch out, Namazake is here to stay. Namazake Hotel Puente Romano Tel. 630 962 852 / 676 920 474 puenteromano.com

By Christie Holland
eing an enormous dog lover, I was delighted when Helen Ellis of ADANA, the Association for the Right of Abandoned Animals, invited me to visit the shelter to learn more about the work they do there. I have to say trying to find the venue was quite a mission, the dirt track was a little much for my dying Renault to manage, but thankfully we eventually got there. Helen explained that they are trying to persuade the town hall to complete works on the route to enable easier access for visitors and volunteers, a result would be highly beneficial for the shelter who rely solely on donations to keep running. “If
we experience heavy rainfall, the track could be potentially very dangerous so we want to get it sorted as soon as possible,” Helen explained. All the finances
apart from membership fees are raised from the public via collection boxes, events such as bridge tournaments, birthday parties and special ADANA events such as the annual Dog Show to take place at the Palacio de Congresos, Estepona, on May 13. ADANA do not receive any funds from the Town Hall although they have a statu-
tory responsibility for stray animals. On arrival, we were given a friendly welcome by the dogs in the first kennel. Helen, who knew all the dogs by name, began to tell us about some of their stories, most had been abandoned by their owners or found without a collar or microchip so brought to the shelter. It was so sad hearing some of the stories, and I wondered, whilst looking at their little faces how anyone could abandon their dog on the street. As we walked into the main area, we were astonished by the sheer number of dogs the small kennels was accommodating. “We currently have 165,” Helen shared with us, “it may seem like a lot but we have had more than that. We are however very pleased as so far this year 50% more dogs have been adopted than last year.” If you are contemplating getting a dog, I would fully recommend you visit the shelter, the small donation required to adopt the dog goes towards their microchip, vaccination and neutering. This is a lot more cost effective than purchasing a dog from a pet shop and having them vaccinated at your local vet, plus you are offering a dog the chance of a home, and not to spend its whole life at the kennels. There are some dogs that have been at ADANA for so many years that they have waivered the donation for to give them the upmost chance of finding a home.
ing of stray animals that ADANA focus on, they also strive to help owners find their lost dogs. Helen understands the hurt of losing your dog as she unfortunately lost her dog two years ago and is yet to find him. “That is how I became involved in ADANA,” she explained. “I
came up here looking for my dog, and then I began volunteering, and here I am.” In order to assist owners in
the southern Spain region, Helen has set up ‘Missing Dogs Costa del Sol,’ on facebook to allow people to post pictures and details of missing dogs and dogs found. “The more we can do to help reunite missing dogs, the less dogs end up without a home at the kennels,” finished Helen.
It’s not only the rehomRemember ADANA receives no funds from the government or local authorities. They can only continue their work through donations made by the public.
To make a donation or to offer any of the dogs at ADANA a home, contact the kennels on 952 113 467 or email adoptions@adana.es. adana.es ADANA.Estepona Missing Dogs - Costa del Sol

2574 Target Target is a young, male Terrier of around 12 months of age. He is a friendly, little, rough-haired boy. We are not sure quite what has happened to him but he has a woun d to his buttock that looks like he has been shot which should heal without leaving any lasting damage. 2577 Nando Nando is large young puppy. He is abou t three months of age and is going to grow into a big dog. His previous owners obviously had no idea how quickly he was goin g to grow as he has a scar around his chest and neck where they had left a harness on him that he literally ‘grew into’. His woun ds are pretty much healed but he will most likely always have the scar however his fur should cover it. He is an adorable, boun cy puppy who needs a home with space for him to grow.

YOUR HOME OF BEAUTY VANITY Beauty Salon in San Pedro are pleased to announce that they are now offering Opalis treatments. Vanity is the only beauty salon fortunate enough to work with the Opalis luxury line in Spain, to bring here the latest trend to come out of Paris. Opalis is a great favorite of many celebrities such as Victoria Abril, Nathalie Baye. There are two main care treatments for your hair: the Soin Supréme (Superior Care) and the Soin Découverte (Discovery Care). The first is an hour and a half long treatment, accompanied with restful music and aromas, it includes a relaxing shoulder, face and head massage and the use of a steamer treatment on the hair. The second is similar to the Soin Supréme, but is 50 minutes in length without the shoulder and face massage. Vanity is holding two ‘Opalis Days’ on the 18 and 19 May at the Salon, where they will be carrying out demonstrations and debuting their brand new hair stylist Alan Walding, who has more than 25 years experience in the industry and has previously worked in Europe, USA and Brazil. INTERNATIONAL BANK CELEBRATES AT NERMANS RESTAURANT Last month Nermans Restaurant, proud owners of the Guinness world record for champagne sabering, hosted a Scandinavian-inspired dinner organised by Nordea Bank. Complimentary cocktails welcomed guests prior to the decadent menu of Swedish specialties Joakim and Jennifer Nerman had lovingly prepared. After inspiring speeches, the Nordea Bank team enjoyed beautifully cooked cuisine and secondto-none hosting skills late into the night. This is not the first time Nordea Bank have chosen Nermans as the location for their celebrations, and it’s easy to see why. The two Scandinavian-rooted businesses complement each other perfectly. nordeaprivatebanking.com nermans.com
