GREY GOOSE IS CONSIDERED WORLD’S BEST VODKA
Grey Goose vodka has been recognized as No. 1 vodka* by the most prestigious international institutions Grey Goose Vodka, world’s favourite luxury vodka**, is created with one goal – to be the world’s best tasting vodka. Grey Goose is the vodka chosen for the most important and glamorous international events, such as Cannes, Oscars, Golden Globes and the Baftas film festivals. Made in Cognac, France, home to the world’s most respected experts in spirits making, Grey Goose vodka benefits from the region’s rich history of creating luxury foods, wines and spirits. The Maître de Chai (cellar master) for Grey Goose vodka ensures that every element of its production is of the highest quality. He selects 100% of the finest French wheat, the same wheat used to create delicious French pastries, and employs an exclusive fivestep distillation process to concentrate its exceptional flavor. Pure spring water naturally filtered through Champagne limestone is then blended with the spirit. Only when the spirit has reached its optimal taste is the maître de chaitruly satisfied. Grey Goose vodka is lush, smooth and rounded and melts in the mouth with a long-lasting, satisfying finish.
Grey Goose Cosmopolitan Method Combine 3 parts of Grey Goose vodka, ½ part of Cointreau, ½ prat of cranberry juice and a squeeze of lime from ½ lime into a cocktail shakerwith ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with an orange twist.
*Awarded as “The Number One Vodka” by The Luxury Institute in 2007 **Honored as “The world’s best tasting Vodka” by Beverage Institute of Chicago in 1998.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT This month we turn the spotlight on the queen of quirk, Katy Perry.
Katy Perry
Everything you ever needed to know about the Firework singer. ince exploding onto our S screens back in 2008 with the sickly sweet I Kissed a
Girl, the name Katy Perry has been on everyone’s lips. From her edgy outfits to her marriage to British comedian Russell Brand, she has gone from strength to strength. The release of her new album as well as a worldwide tour puts her right in the spotlight for 2011. * Being raised in a Christian
Pastor house, Katy Perry grew up only listening to gospel music, and began singing in churches across the US.
* At the age of 15, her singing
in church attracted attention from rock veterans from Tennessee, who took her to Nashville to polish her writing skills. It was here she started recording demos and learnt how to play guitar.
*
Perry signed to Christian label Red Hill and released a selftitled gospel-rock album in 2001, which majorly flopped. She then signed to Columbia Records in 2004, but the label was not compatible
with her vision, as she had such strong ideas about the way she wanted to market herself. They paired her with the record production team The Matrix, where she served as its female vocalist, and caught the attention of the press. It was here she began writing songs, some of which were included in her first album.
* She signed with Capitol Music Group (a merger between Virgin and Capitol) in 2007, adopted the stage name Katy Perry, as her actual name Katy Hudson was too close to film actress Kate Hudson, and released her first Internet single Ur So Gay. This
single grabbed the attention of Madonna who mentioned her on radio and television interviews, and so her dominance of the media began.
* May 6 2008, saw the release
of her first official single I Kissed a Girl, which catapulted her into the charts, and made her the talk of the press. Her outright controversy singing about lesbian antics after her strict Christian upbringing created the publicity needed to launch a new star. It peaked at number one for seven weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.
* Her first tour, the Hello Katy Tour began in July 2009,

further promoting her I Kissed a Girl single. In 2008, she won Best New Act at the MTV Video Music Awards (which she co-hosted with 30 Seconds to Mars) and in 2009 she won Best International Female Artist at the Brit Awards, and a nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards.
* She performed her second
single Hot n Cold with Elmo from Sesame Street, but the footage wasn’t released on the television due to parents complaining about the great amount of cleavage shown by her dress.
* She was awarded the “Best
Start on the US Digital Chart by a Female Artist” by the Guinness Book of Records for
having her first two singles sell over two million digital copies.
* During the summer of 2009,
Perry filmed a cameo appearance for Get Him to the Greek, where she kissed her future husband Russell Brand, but the clip was unfortunately cut and does not appear in the final film.
guest judge during the seventh series of The X Factor in June 2010, fulfilling the role of judge whilst Dannii Minogue was on maternity leave. Her frank and honest opinions made her one of the most popular guest judges ever to appear on show.
* In August 2010 she released
based band 3OH!3’s song Starstrukk in September 2009 and Timbaland’s If We Ever Meet Again in December. Both collaborations further promoted her as a genuine artist.
her second album Teenage Dream, which was inspired by ABBA and The Cardigans, debuted at number one, selling 192,000 copies in its first week. The album was packaged in many ways, one of which was scented like cotton candy to coincide with the cotton candy cover.

all of her favourite flavours: gardenia, citrus, jasmine and sandalwood. She tested the products for a year and a half, and chose the bottle shape due to her three pet felines: Morrissey, Kitty Purry and Crusty.
* Perry met her husband Russell Brand in 2008. She married him in India on October 23, 2010 in a traditional Hindu ceremony in the same place he proposed 10 months before.

For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon, to help them kill the wolf. However, Solomon’s arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. CORNER
GOSSIP
Warner Bros. has con-
firmed plans to remake its early 90s romantic thriller:
The Bodyguard.
The remake will reportedly feature a bodyguard whose first job after leaving Iraq is to look after a rising female music star. With Twitter, Google Maps and rolling celebrity news coverage, he finds that the threats against his client have been amplified. The Bodyguard, released in 1992, grossed more than US$400 million at the worldwide box office and spawned a best-selling soundtrack album. Whitney Houston’s single I Will Always Love You shipped 12 million units worldwide and spent 14 weeks at the top of the billboard chart. The original movie was scripted as a vehicle for Steve McQueen and Diana Ross before it was reworked as Houston’s big screen debut.
Tom Hooper is reportedly in negotiations to direct the film adaptation of Les Miserables. The novel, which is already a hugely successful West End musical, is about an ex-convict who is struggling to set his life right in revolutionary Paris. Hooper, who directed the BAFTA-winning The King’s Speech, is said to have turned down Iron Man 3, potentially freeing up time to work on the epic novel adaptation. Kristin Davis has confessed that she doesn’t want to see the Sex and the City series rebooted with a prequel film. The actress, who portrayed Charlotte York Goldenblatt in
the TV series and two feature films, has expressed that recasting the roles with younger stars may disappoint fans of the franchise. Sarah Jessica Parker has also voiced her objection to the rumoured SATC revamp, saying that it would be like creating “two histories”. Glee star
Dianna Argon and Miley Cyrus have ex-
pressed interest in appearing
in the Sex And The City prequel, titled The Carrie Diaries.
Justin Timberlake and Larry David are reportedly in the running to play Larry in Bobby and Peter Farrelly’s The Three Stooges movie. The pair is being considered for the comedy film alongside Johnny Knoxville and Will Sasso. The Farrelly brothers are also said to be looking at Woody Harrelson and Hank Azaria to fill one of the three key roles. The Three Stooges is due to start filming in April.
Steve Carell will next be seen on our screens playing a grief-stricken widower who tries to teach his pet dog to speak. The star of the US version of The Office will also produce the project titled: Dogs of Babel. It is an adaptation of the debut novel by Carolyn Parkhurst, which recounts the story of a man who comes home to find that his dog is the only witness to his wife’s accidental death. Carell, better known for his comedy roles, is also currently in talks to play Meryl
Streep’s therapist in the upcoming domestic drama, Great Hope Springs.
Uma Thurman and Jessica Biel will join Gerard Butler in the
cast of sports comedy Playing the Field. The movie features a former professional soccer star who finds himself the target for a group of mothers when he begins to coach his son’s youth team. Thurman will portray the mum of one of Butler’s players, while Biel has the role of his exwife. Thurman has roles coming up opposite Robert
tinson
Pat-
in Bel Ami and as Lois Lane in comedy anthology, Movie 43. It has been reported that
Lindsay Lohan
may be joining the cast of the film Escaping the Game. Lohan was recently accused of stealing a £1,547 necklace, and could be facing jail time for the crime if found guilty. However, movie producer Nathan Folks still wants the actress to star in his next project. Should Lohan decide to join the movie, she will play an investigator looking into the disappearances of various celebrities.
Johnny Depp has admitted that there are still a number of dream projects he wants to be a part of, despite already having appeared in nearly 50 films over the course of his career. Depp said that he has one or two pet projects he wants to get off the ground before even considering retiring from acting, including an adaptation of J.P. Donleavy’s novel The Ginger Man. There have been
rumours in Hollywood about a film adaptation of the novel for more than 10 years, and Depp himself has expressed interest in the project from as far back as 2006. The Ginger Man follows the racy adventures of a young student called Sebastian Dangerfield, an American living in Dublin with his family while studying law. The novel was extremely controversial upon its release in 1947, and was banned in both the Republic of Ireland and the US because of its obscene content.
James Franco has closed a deal to play the title role in the forthcoming Oz: The Great and Powerful. The Disney project will reunite Franco with Spider-Man director Sam Raimi. The film is billed as a prequel to the original L. Frank Baum novel that inspired the 1939 Oscarwinning feature The Wizard of Oz. Production is expected to begin in July, after Franco wraps shooting on director Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young. Ewan McGregor is the latest addition to the cast of Bryan Singer’s Jack The Giant Killer. McGregor is negotiating to join the project, which re-imagines the classic Jack And The Beanstalk tale. The story centres on a young farmer leading a rescue mission for a princess trapped in a kingdom of giants. Bill Nighy has also been cast in Jack The Giant Killer. McGregor has upcoming roles in Steven Soderbergh’s espionage thriller Haywire and Salmon Fishing in The Yemen. 17

Justin knows all about his dad’s bad rep and that he’s been in and out of prison, but he wants to help him sort his life out. Bieber credits dad Jeremy with giving him his musical genes. The teen pop star recently insisted that he will not spiral out of control like other young celebrities, but will remain grounded.

THE BODY ZONE Every month our health and beauty expert, Nicola McGeorge spills the beans on the behind-the-scenes gossip and tricks of the trade
April is the perfect time to start getting your body bikini-ready. After months of being hidden away under layers of clothes, my skin is always, dry, scaly, pale and rather blotchy. The Baywatch producers certainly won’t be calling me any time soon. Drastic action is needed.

I start everyday with skin brushing just before my morning shower. As well as exfoliating my skin, it’s also an essential tool for good circulation, strengthening the immune system, stimulating the nervous system, toning the muscles and improving digestion. Using the Elemis Skin Brush, (available from Reflections Hair & Beauty Salon: +34 902 325 324, reflectionsmarbella.com) which is made from high quality cactus bristles. Start at your feet and always brush towards your heart. Using brisk, long, even strokes brush all the way up your legs, then change to circular movements over your abdomen and back to long strokes again over buttocks and back. If you have cellulite on your hips and thighs, concentrate there a little longer. Brush your shoulders and chest downwards, always towards your heart, and when you reach your arms begin at your fingers and brush up your arms towards your heart. Finish by taking a shower, and if you choose, use cold/hot therapy to further stimulate the lymphatic system and improve circulation. This really helps alleviate the pain in my shoulders and neck from being hunched over a computer all day.
Dry off vigorously and massage in Davina Peace’s body cream. The luxurious texture makes every day a pamper day. A cheaper alternative is Jason’s 70% Certified Organic Body Lotion. If you suffer from stretch marks or scars, Bio-Oil is a miracle worker.

Even with the skin brushing I still need to exfoliate my whole body once a week. I like products with heavy duty large grains, anything with micro beads is useless in my opinion. Aveda Caribbean Therapy Body Scrub includes salt and Caribbean cane sugar to transform the skin. Focus on arms and thighs or anywhere where you get bumps and ingrown hairs.
So now you are de-scaled and moisturised, it’s time to sort out any water retention and bloating. One of my favourite tricks, which I cannot believe I am giving away, is to soak the night before a big event or hitting the beach, in a bath full of Epson salts. You can find these at your local health shop, however, Dead Sea Magik Bath Salts do pretty much the same thing. The magnesium encourages your body to quickly shed toxins, boost digestion and potentially even reduce cellulite. Add two cups of salts in your bath water and soak your toxins away for 20 minutes. Remember to rinse off well or you will be itchy all night. I learnt the hard way.

For maximum results, the old saying is true: nothing beats eating healthily and exercising. On top of this I drink two litres of water a day, which helps flush everything out, keep my tummy flat and my skin glowing. Try not to drink too much near bed time, otherwise you will be up all night going to the loo. On one particular occasion, after being woken up for the ninth time, my other half swore at me and stomped off to the spare room. Be warned! Now, as my legs haven’t seen sunlight in months, a slick of Fake Bake’s Self Tanning Mousse will hide a multitude of sins. Now where did I put that red swim suit?

Nailing Fashion Week Is there anything hotter than Minx right now? They took fashion week by storm, particularly in Paris, where models rocked Minx at Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Thierry Mugler and Gareth Pugh. We loved the gold-framed, waxy blue Minx, which showed a flash of gold under the nail at Gareth Pugh. At McQueen they opted for a Snow Queen theme, achieved by applying a top coat of Minx that is a translucent replication of the view from a snow cave, with black fading to silver, applied over a flat, silver base coat. MUNDO FITNESS

undo Fitness boutique has recently opened on the Golden Mile to take care of all your fitness needs. It stocks gym equipment, fitness clothing and health supplements, and the staff is waiting for your visit. The store now also carries the Ab Coaster. This new
and revolutionary exercise device takes abdominal training to a whole new level. Unlike traditional crunches, which work your abs from the top down, the Ab Coaster works your abs from the bottom up, while limiting stress to your neck, back and shoulders. The Ab Coaster makes difficult exercises, like a hanging leg raise, possible for anyone to perform, with the same outcome to your core. Its weightbearing design eliminates the need to hang from a bar and places the user in a comfortable kneel-
ing position off the floor. The Ab Coaster is a fantastic piece of equipment and is very reasonably priced. Mundo Fitness is now offering it at a discounted rate of €199 (reduced from €295). Mundo Fitness offers a full line of premier Life Fitness equipment for the home. From yoga mats and gym gear, to complete home gym equipment such as treadmills, and of course, the Ab Coaster. MESOTHERAPY M
Mesotherapy promotes weight loss, targeted fat reduction, body contouring and skin rejuvenation. It is a safe technique using FDA approved pharmacologicalagents, homeopathic formulas and natural plant extracts. The treatment takes just 30 minutes per session. Depending on the amount of unwanted fat and cellulite involved, six to sixteen treatments are generally recommended. Cellulite affects the majority of women over the age of 20 and is caused by poor circulation to the skin, bound lymphatics, fat herniation and weakening of the connective tissues. Mesotherapy effectively targets three factors involved in cellulite formation: the specific formula injected reduces the fat in your cellulite, improves impaired circulation and breaks down and rejuvenates damaged connective tissue, thereby smoothing the skin’s surface. Leiser Marbella is an aesthetic centre located in San Pedro de Alcántara. Leiser offers you state-of-the-art technology with fully-trained professionals to guarantee a new concept of beauty and wellbeing. Leiser Marbella is now offering promotional deals on mesotherapy, along with vibrating platforms and presotherapy. Prices vary from €400-599 depending on treatment combinations. FITNESS TIPS
We reveal the secrets of feeling and looking great
Heidi Klum is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful women in the world. However, she has to work hard to maintain her physique. Here, David Kirsch, her personal trainer, shares his fitness philosophy and key moves to get into shape.
LEGS Exercise: Plié toe squats, four times weekly Works: Calves, thighs and glutes How to do it: Stand with feet more than hip-width apart, toes turned slightly out, hands on hips. Squat, lifting heels off the floor as you do so. Hold for five seconds. Return to standing, keeping heels lifted, then lower them back to the floor. Do 15. Where to focus: Focus energy on inner thighs and glutes
BUTT Exercise: Crossover lunges, four times weekly Works: Glutes, hips and hamstrings How to do it: Start upright, feet shoulder-width distance apart, hands on hips. Start with right leg, step forward and cross over left leg, while bending at the knee. Return to start position. Repeat on the left. Do 15 on each side. Where to focus: Focus energy on putting your brain in your butt
* To get the right moves for your butt type, check out David Kirsch’s Butt Book, available at: davidkirschwellness.com
36
FULLY-TONED BODY Exercise: 30–45 minutes of cardio every day Works: Trims and tones all major muscles How to do it: Choose a form of cardio that helps you get your heart rate up – really up. I recommend running, rowing, swimming, cycling or elliptical trainer. Keep at it without stopping for 30 to 45 minutes. Where to focus: Focus energy on pushing the envelope. You should feel out of breath and your heart rate should be up.
* To get a fully toned body, check out David Kirsch’s red-carpet workout DVDs, available at davidkirschwellness.com
UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
BACK Exercise: Shadow boxing with dumbbells, four times weekly Works: Back and shoulders How to do it: Using a dumbbell in each hand, punch left fist out diagonally, ending at torso level in front of right ribs, completing a crossover punch. Pull back as you bend knees, as if you are ducking an incoming punch. Repeat on the other side as you extend legs, driving up from your heels and into your butt. Repeat 20 to 30 on each side. Where to focus: Focus energy on keeping abs tight the entire time
ABS Exercise: Oblique crunches, four times weekly Works: External and internal obliques (they form the sides of your abs) How to do it: Lie on your right side with knees bent, right arm on the floor in front of you, left hand behind head. Crunch, lifting knees straight up and bringing left shoulder toward them; pause, lower and repeat. Do 15; switch sides. Where to focus: Focus energy on engaging lower abs, not hip flexors. (You should feel it from your belly button downward.)
ARMS Exercise: Push-Ups, 15 to 25 every day Works: Triceps and chest How to do it: Place palms on floor. Bend elbows out to the side as you lower your chest toward the floor. Then press back up. If full push-ups are too hard right now, do partial push-ups (knees on floor). If you can’t do partial push-ups, start with the “plank”. (In this position, you’ll simulate the “up” part of a push-up for 30 seconds.) Where to focus: Focus energy on keeping abs tight and back flat the entire time

Some pieces of furniture have a shelf life, serve their purpose and find their way to the attic or the skip once they have played out their role. n just a few months we will finally enjoy our long-awaited, and well-deserved, summer holidays. At the moment we are probably already planning on where to go, some of us might even be making early reservations in order to save some money.

What would happen, however, if you got ill right before or even during your holidays and you found yourself in the situation of temporary disability? Besides the economic damage that might cause the cancellation of our reservations, could we ask our boss to let us enjoy our holidays some other time? Until just recently the Spanish law stated that in cases in which the holidays coincided with a temporary disability, the employee was not entitled to enjoy some extra days off. This was only possible in the case of maternity leave if there were still some days left that year. Furthermore, if the contract of an employee on sick leave ended, he was entitled to be paid for the holidays accrued but not taken in the corresponding year. This means that until just recently it was not possible to claim for the payment of the vacation period accrued but not taken. Nevertheless, the legal situation on this issue has changed radically due a decision of the European Court of Justice (hereafter referred to as “ECJ”) on 20th January 2009. From now on, employees on a long-term sick leave are able to carry over their accumulated holidays to the subsequent year. Therefore, you could say that, holidays do not expire any more.
In relation to the above, the Spanish Social Court should now review its prior legislations as the ECJ takes a different view on this issue and does not seem to have established any limits on the number of years an employee is able to carry over his holidays. In addition to that there have also not been taken any decisions regarding the compensation for accrued but untaken annual leave. The ECJ decision is likely to increase termination costs of the employment contract, especially when employees have been off sick for an extended period. This would mean that Spanish employers may have to consider if they can limit their liability by terminating employment contracts before the employees’ temporary incapacity extends for too long.
Finally, we should not forget that the new European legislation may be vulnerable to fraud and therefore cause serious prejudices to the company. In most businesses, the summer holidays are coming closer and more than ever it should be in the employers´ interests to watch their employees’ health.

SOCIETY MARBELLA brings you everything you need to know about the biggest wedding of the decade. After the roaring success of the royal wedding feature in our sister publication CONFETI MAGAZINE, where we invited the top bridal designers to sketch original designs of the dress they would design for Kate’s big day, Society Marbella now brings you the ins-and-outs of one of the biggest events on the social calendar.
Royal Wedding Bells his charity work, as well as their family and friends. There will also be representatives from foreign royal families, governments, parliaments, the commonwealth and the armed forces. April 29, 2011 is going to be one of the most important days of the year for the royal family, and the whole world will be watching. After a decade of dating, and numerous ‘will they, won’t they?’ rumours in the press, Prince William and Kate (soon to be Catherine) Middleton are finally tying the knot. With the wedding set to be beamed across the globe, it is expected to attract one of the biggest audiences and highest ratings ever. Speculation over where, who and, most importantly, THAT dress, has gripped the nation for months. Below are our predictions for the big day and beyond:
A bit of fun Did you know...? Channel 4 is in talks to shoot a one-off spoof of the hugely popular Big Fat Gypsy Weddings to co-inside with the royal wedding. The brand new episode will centre on a real gypsy princess and prince from the travelling community. The show will air on the same day as the royals walk down the aisle.
The Location Westminster Abbey, chosen for its beauty, intimacy and historic royal connections, will be the location of this monumental celebration. The late Princess Diana’s funeral was also held here, making it particularly relevant to the future King. Their wedding will be the 16th royal wedding held here, and all eyes will be on it at 11am on Friday April 29.
The Guests Approximately 1,900 guests are invited to attend (we’re still waiting for our invitation in the mail!). However, it will not be an A-list event, as William and Kate are only inviting people who Prince William has met on official business or encountered through

Secondly, William and Kate are good friends with Richard Branson’s children, so there is no doubt that the Virgin mogul’s private Caribbean retreat Necker Island (which rents at $54,000 a day!) is a hot contender. However, with the UK gripped by economic uncertainty, many believe it would be inappropriate for the newly-weds to jet off on a lavish, no-expense-spared honeymoon, so the current bookies’ favourite is the Scilly Isles in the UK. DRIVE ON!
SUNSEEKER Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the BMW 650i convertible
T
racking across a mixed bag of perfect highway, fast, sweeping cross-country roads, and winding, off-cambered byways, my driving route from Cape Town to the western coast was a perfect test for BMW’s new 6-Series Convertible. Within a couple of miles, I came to the conclusion that the new 6-Series Convertible is a very different animal from its predecessor in both looks and dynamics. While the overall proportions of the car remain similar, with the classic sporting car long bonnet and short tail, any remnants of the edgy and controversial Chris Bangle styling details are gone.

The new front has wider, squatter grilles, and a more sculpted bonnet that makes its mandatory extra height for pedestrian head impact look like a convincing part of the design.
the width of the car from the rear, reinforcing the car’s stable and purposeful stance, while playing down the high rear deck line that gives the car its relatively generous boot capacity.
The larger headlamps have a much cleaner shape with Bi-Xenon lights as standard, and Adaptive Headlight technology as an option. The light bar below the bumper is integrated into the design as a considered piece of design jewellery in the air intake ducts, rather than simply placed there as on most other cars.
An interesting design touch, and one that you only notice upon close examination, is the fact that the part of the rear light clusters that turns the corners, actually takes a very small bite out of the sides of the bootlid. It is one of those small details that make you raise your eyebrows when you notice it.
At the rear, the controversial “backpack” bootlid of the old model is history, and the small, curvy tail-light clusters have been replaced with much larger, longer lights with a large component in the bootlid itself. The new lights play a leading role in visually emphasising
Another interesting design detail is the crease line along the car’s flanks that starts below the side intake behind the front wheel arches and sweeps aft above the sills towards the rear wheel arches. This gives a sense of dynamic tension to the design, and makes it look like it is moving even at rest.
DRIVE ON! BMW made a conscious decision to make the instrument binnacle and infotainment screen separate elements. “This is important because a sporting car has a greater emphasis on the speedometer and rev counter, which should be the main focus of driver attention on the dashboard,” Oliver Heilmer, from the Interior Design Team explained. The new electric seats are very comfortable, and now you can have fan assisted cooling as well as heating as an option. These proved extremely useful after the car had been standing under the South African summer sun. The larger boot has a more generous, 380 litres of load space with the roof up and 300 litres folded, enough for the obligatory pair of golf bags or a weekend away for two. Artist renderings always feature the largest wheels possible, but production reality means that most cars suffer visually from having too small wheels. Taking advantage of the better ride comfort of the latest fourth generation Runflat tyre technology, BMW decided that the new 6-Series would not be compromised in this way, and elected to use 18-inch wheels as standard on the V8 twin-turbocharged 650i. That said, the base six-cylinder 640i will come with 17-inchers. Even on bumpy roads, it was hard to detect more than a smidgen of scuttle shake in the new Convertible. BMW says that torsional stiffness is up by a whopping 50 percent thanks to the use of more high strength steels in strategic places. The car’s ride and road manners certainly back that up in real world conditions. One of the first conclusions that I arrived at was the supple ride quality despite 18-inch wheels, Runflat tyres and the suspension in Sport mode. Without compromising handling, the engineers could only arrive at this solution by stiffening up the structure to allow the use of more comfort orientated spring and damper settings. In fact, these settings are not actually “softer” as such, but rather better matched in progression for the car’s secondary ride, in conjunction with the new generation tyres and the stiffer structure. The final nice touch is the polished trim that outlines the rear deck when the roof is folded. This takes its cue from upmarket classic wooden speedboats, and reminds me of the treatment used on another BMW product, the RollsRoyce Phantom Drophead. The new interior benefits from the 75mm extra length of the new car. Combined with the new lightweight front seats, the rear seat provides more legroom even if the car is still a 2+2. Stitched leather on the dashboard and console are standard, giving a suitably upmarket look and feel. The surrounding trim and centre console feature soft, sweeping lines, the counterpoint being the angular and edgy look of technical elements like the info-tainment console that sits above the centre console. A polished frame underlines its significance as an important independent element of the interior design.
Big gains in ride and handling also come from the double wishbone front suspension that replaces the McPherson struts of the old model. BMW has been clever here in terms of economies of scale, utilising the same suspension elements across three model ranges. The new front suspension debuted on the F01 7-Series, and is used on the 5-Series and now the new 6-Series. Naturally, specific detail adaptation for different vehicle weight, length and comfort settings is carried out so the 6-Series has sportier handling set-up than the 5-Series, which in turn is more sporty than the 7-Series. I tried all four of the suspension modes available in Dynamic Drive Control, and found the Comfort setting only good for loping along the highway or cruising in town. In any
71
DRIVE ON!
other condition, I felt a trace of float, especially off short wave bumps at speed. Even Normal exhibited a trace of this, so I left the Sport setting engaged the rest of the time. Sport+, which also loosens up the traction control, is a bit too much for the road most of the time unless you are out for a really concentrated drive. In that respect, I was surprised at just how well calibrated the Sport mode was for just normal road driving. This setting also allows you to sharpen both engine/gearbox and suspension calibrations separately, or as a pairing. In Sport, the ride remains fairly supple, but handling is tightened up and engine and gearbox response are enhanced. However, this is not to the point where the car becomes edgy. I left it there for the rest of my drive. BMW’s Adaptive Drive system with Dynamic damper Control and Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation system is an option as is Integral Active Steering, which provides some rear wheel steering when cornering, but more so at low speeds to enhance maneuverability. Thanks to the use of lightweight steel in the body-in-white, aluminum bonnet, doors and front subframe along with composite front wings, roof deck and bootlid, the new 6-Series Convertible saves 70kg over its predecessor. However, after all the additional new safety and convenience systems are accounted for, the cars kerb weight ends up roughly the same as before. Performance, fuel consumption and emissions are all improved significantly however thanks to the new engine range. The 650i’s motor is the now familiar TwinPower V8 that debuted in the X5 and X6, and then worked its way into the 5GT, 750i and more recently the new 5-Series. This 4.4 litre twin-turbo, direct-injection four-cam motor makes 407hp between 5,500 and 6,400rpm with a healthy 600Nm of torque on tap between 1,750 and 4,500rpm.
72
Mated to the eight-speed gearbox with paddle shift over-ride first seen on the 760i, this super-smooth drivetrain fires off upshifts so rapidly you just hear a slight drop in the engines decibel level as it delivers one long, seamless blast of acceleration. Given full beans off the line, 0-100km/h takes 5.0 sec dead, while top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h. The average fuel consumption is 10.7L/100km, accompanied by CO2 emissions of 249g/km. The entry-level 640i Convertible uses the 3.0 litre TwinPower six with direct-injection and Valvetronic variable valve timing for 320hp at 5,800rpm and 450Nm of torque between 1,300 and 4,500rpm. 0-100km/h takes 5.7 sec, and average fuel consumption and emissions are an impressive 7.9 L/100km and 185g/km respectively. BMW’s drive to fit their Efficient Dynamics technology into all their models continues here with fuel saving features such as Brake Energy regeneration, Electric Power steering, intelligent lightweight construction and low rolling resistance tyres. The 640i version also has Auto Start-Stop and the automatic active air flap control, which improves the car’s drag factor by closing some of the air intake channels when it is cruising under light throttle load. The powered hood takes 19 seconds to lower and 24 seconds to raise, which can be done on the fly up to 40km/h. It also features a Comfort Access feature that allows activation from outside the car with the key fob. As before, the vertical heated rear window that can also be raise independently. The flying buttress shape of the canvas hood flanks this glass panel. The multi-layered, insulated hood is snug and draft free and delivers a refined, practically hardtop like experience. At 180km/h I was able to carry on a conversation at normal levels. With the roof down, side glass raised and the air deflector in place, my hair remained unruffled at 160km/h, but wind noise meant shouting to be heard.

73
DRIVE ON!
The all-new 6-Series Convertible will be joined by a Coupé and a smaller straight-six 640i version later in the year, but BMW wisely chose to launch the Convertible first to coincide with spring. Considering that the al fresco version of the outgoing 6-Series sold 46.6 percent of the 118,000 cars produced between 2004 and 2010, this is undoubtedly a wise strategy. The on-sale dates in Europe and the rest of the world are March, and May respectively. Despite its impressive straight-line urge and relative agility, the 650i Convertible feels more like a GT than a sports car. It is too big and heavy to mix it with Porsches and Ferraris on a twisty road, but then it is not that type of car. The BMW’s natural rivals are the Jaguar XK and Maserati Convertibles. During my time with the Convertible, I was content to drive briskly rather than flat out, simply enjoying the comfortable ride, deft handling and relatively draft-free cabin. The Coupé on the other hand, will be a more focused and engaging driving machine. Better looking, smoother, more roomy and refined than the original, the latest 6-Series Convertible is a more convincing car in every respect. This should help it to sell in even greater numbers than its predecessor.

NERMANS
RESTAURANT & BISTRO BAR I
n the ever-growing area of Nueva Andalucía, Nermans Restaurant and Bistro Bar is the perfect location for dining. Tucked away from the busy roads lies this atmospheric eatery where the restaurant and staff have a passion for gastronomy. Closed on Mondays (the guys deserve at least one day off!), Nermans is open for lunch from 12.30 – 16.00 and for dinner from 19.00 until late. Their very popular weekly lunch menu offers two courses for €12 or three courses for just €15 – excellent value for money. Sunday lunches are a favourite of mine, and Nermans Sunday brunch menu includes dishes such as its roast carvery from the silver trolley, carved at your table and served with seasonal vegetables plus all the trimmings, delicious homemade burgers and Grand Marnier Soufflé with maraschino coulis. The perfect way to spend a Sunday! The restaurant serves international cuisine, all of which is fresh and flavourful. Half portions are available on all dishes for children, or for those of you wanting a light snack. As the sun begins to shine and the dark clouds fade, Nermans has changed to its spring/summer menu, which includes lighter dishes and seasonal ingredients. Their fruity cocktails complement the menu perfectly and are certain to go down a storm in the height of summer. They also stock an array of wines, beers and champagnes. Don’t miss the highly-talented staff sabering off the champagne corks in true Napoleonic style, this is as impressive now as it was when they began sabering 212 bottles ago – perfect for celebrating those special occasions! The atmosphere of the restaurant is warm and inviting. The dimmed lighting and scattered candlelight sets the mood perfectly; whether for a family meal or an intimate date. The ambiance is further enhanced with delicate pastel colour decor and atmospheric music – soft gentle compositions play in the background and are in keeping with the tone of the restaurant.

This quaint little eatery is constantly flowing with guests, but the layout of the tables and the delicate outdoor seating never feels crowded or congested with people. The sheltered terrace is a haven on lush summer days and temperate evenings. The decorative art on the walls by Alejandro Hermann, which was inaugurated to a selection of clients last month, has been warmly received. The art is both classic and interesting, and instigates conversation about the stark contrast of the striking model and classic beauty.
COSTA CUISINE
Nermans Restaurant and Bistro Bar has class, dignity and charm. The staff set the benchmark for restaurateurs everywhere; their attention to detail is absolute perfection. They are polite, informative, are on hand to answer any questions or queries about dishes with grace and, most importantly, sincerity. Watch out for the white gloves when providing diners with new cutlery, it completely blew me away how something as small as that makes such a difference to the level of service. This professionalism is credit to owner Joakim Nerman who is passionate about his restaurant and business. As we were shown to our seats, we were given complimentary Thai chilli crackers with a home-made dipping sauce, which was light and great to nibble on whilst surveying the extensive menu. We were served a delightful tasting menu, which includes numerous small dishes that are perfect for sharing or for a light snack. I am always guilty of wanting to try my dining partner’s dishes, so this was perfectly suited to me. The array of starter dishes began with a shot of courgette and chive soup, which was rich and light. Then we were served a selection of cold sharing plates, which included Skagen-dilled prawns with home-marinated Norwegian salmon, with a crumbled goats cheese and crispy bacon salad with Italian herb dressing. This was refreshingly light and the contrast of the crispy bacon and salad leaves complemented the smooth crumbled goats cheese perfectly. Along with this was Carpaccio of beef with rucola, parmesan, roasted walnuts and porcini olive oil – so fresh and delicious.
Once this was cleared (all plates were virtually licked clean!) we devoured the warm sharing plates. The filet mignon with maman Yvette pepper sauce and green beans was succulent and juicy. The accompanying seasonal vegetables were reminiscent of the traditional “meat and two veg” but obviously with more class, grace and loads more flavour. To follow, a wild mushroom and spinach-filled crêpe gratinated with goats cheese was really appetising, as the cheese was rich and creamy. The poached salmon on a bed of Julienne carrots and leeks with Noilly Prat and mustard seed sauce was melt-in-the-mouth. Another decadent dish of mushrooms followed, this time in a crème fraîche and wholegrain mustard sauce. After all that delicious savoury food, our dessert was dark chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream, which as you can see was beautifully moist and rich. We were also able to try some of Nermans delicious cocktails. A raspberry and vanilla daiquiri, a mango daiquiri, a cosmopolitan with mandarin twist (their best seller) and a coffee martini, rounded off the meal perfectly. It is clear to see that Nermans is loved by all, as the clientele is cosmopolitan and obviously returns on a regular basis. The bilingual members of staff allow guests to feel at ease, and make them want to come back time after time. I must admit this is not my first visit, and will definitely not be my last! AMAPOLA
RESTAURANT A
mapola Restaurant, in the heart of the old town of Marbella, is one of those hidden gems. You would never expect to have a restaurant with such talented chefs and diverse cuisine to be located here on the coast. Thankfully Amapola is here to stay and is looking forward to your custom. Amapola derives its name from the Spanish poppy, which is embossed on the candles and table decorations throughout the restaurant. Since opening its doors last year, Amapola has welcomed a range of clientele. All ages and nationalities are catered for in the food and décor of the restaurant. Its cuisine of international fusion dining is an uplifting and refreshing alternative. The food is seriously comparable to no other. The restaurant itself is cozy and inviting, covering two levels and an outdoor terrace. The main area of the restaurant is located on the entry floor, with a bar serving wines, beers and cocktails. There is a cocktail menu, but the helpful and creative staff can adapt the drinks to your needs, and can even create new ones for you.
The upper section of the restaurant is a little more intimate; an area perfect for private parties and celebrations. The covered, outdoor terrace is a sheltered sanctuary for those long, summer days and the heaters provide much needed warmth when the weather turns on us during the winter months.
the caviar of capers tampered with our taste buds. Secondly, smoked squid pie, sausage in a gold bar and garlic alioli. The squid was smoked beautifully and the soft sausage was paté smooth and deliciously rich. The presentation of this dish was one of my favourites, and the gold bar made me feel like royalty.
Open Monday to Saturday from 13:00 until midnight, Amapola caters for lunch and dinner. The gourmet lunch menu is available from Monday to Friday until 5pm, and includes a choice of two starters, two mains and a dessert for just €11.95 (what fantastic value for money!). There is also live music every Saturday from 8pm. Gift vouchers are also available for €15 and €50 for that one-of-a-kind experience present.
Next was goats cheese grilled sponge, quince (a descendant of the pear family) and endive salad with orange essence. The sponge was so light (thankfully, as we did have seven more courses to go) and fluffy, and was followed by a melon sorbet with strawberry pulp, a honey cookie and yoghurt ravioli. This was also lovely and light on the palate – we thought this was dessert and dinner was over. Oh, how we were wrong. The next dish showed that if you’re not as experimental or as adventurous, Amapola do cater for you. The veal goulash with homemade pasta and red wine was absolutely superb. The veal was tender and the sauce was to-die-for.
The slogan of the restaurant is “the new dining experience”, and this certainly was one meal like no other I have ever experienced. Highly talented Hungarian chef Viktor sees food differently than the “average Joe” chef. He changes the texture and molecules of his dishes so they challenge your perception of food and the way it should taste. Viktor wouldn’t be out of place in Heston Blumenthal’s kitchen, with his experimental attitude towards food and the avant-garde presentation of each dish. Most of our taste is based on our preconception of what our brain thinks the food is going to taste like, and Viktor turns this on its head. What you see on the plate is certainly not what you get! To start, the traditional tasting dish of olives was presented to us, but exploded in our mouths with a softer than usual texture. This instantly told us that this restaurant was going to be like no other! What followed was a gastronomic feast of 10 courses from the new spring/summer menu. Sergio, our helpful bilingual waiter, served our first dish of marinated tartar de salmon with aromatic herbs and caviar of capers. The salmon was exquisitely cooked and
Next was our fish dish; roll of sole baked with crème of peas and black rice. The rice was beautifully decorated with gold spray; another dish fit for royalty. The sole was so soft and refreshing on the palate. Following on from this were our two meat dishes. One was beef tenderloin in a Calvados sauce, with roasted carrot and potato soufflé. The purple mash was definitely a favourite of mine. The second was a lamb plate that is a specialty at Amapola, which included shoulder of lamb, liver sautéed in onions and shallots, rack of lamb and homemade sausage in chickpea and cream sauce. All the restaurant’s meat is sourced locally from Spain, meaning it is of the freshest quality. After an amuse-bouche of truffle icecream to refresh our palates, we were served our two desserts. Firstly, a chocolate brownie with candied ginger, vanilla ice-cream and mango lace, which was decorated beautifully and reminiscent of a bride’s veil. And, last but not least, gin and tonic ice-cream, which rounded off the meal perfectly. It’s certain to say that we were pretty full, but very satisfied once we left the restaurant!
