GREY GOOSE IS CONSIDERED WORLD’S BEST VODKA

Grey Goose vodka has been recognized as No. 1 vodka* by the most prestigious international institutions Grey Goose Vodka, world’s favourite luxury vodka**, is created with one goal – to be the world’s best tasting vodka. Grey Goose is the vodka chosen for the most important and glamorous international events, such as Cannes, Oscars, Golden Globes and the Baftas film festivals. Made in Cognac, France, home to the world’s most respected experts in spirits making, Grey Goose vodka benefits from the region’s rich history of creating luxury foods, wines and spirits. The Maître de Chai (cellar master) for Grey Goose vodka ensures that every element of its production is of the highest quality. He selects 100% of the finest French wheat, the same wheat used to create delicious French pastries, and employs an exclusive fivestep distillation process to concentrate its exceptional flavor. Pure spring water naturally filtered through Champagne limestone is then blended with the spirit. Only when the spirit has reached its optimal taste is the maître de chai truly satisfied. Grey Goose vodka is lush, smooth and rounded and melts in the mouth with a long-lasting, satisfying finish.

Grey Goose Cosmopolitan Method Combine 3 parts of Grey Goose vodka, ½ part of Cointreau, ½ part of cranberry juice and a squeeze of lime from ½ lime into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

*Awarded as “The Number One Vodka” by The Luxury Institute in 2007 **Honored as “The world’s best tasting Vodka” by Beverage Institute of Chicago in 1998.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

Ashton Kutcher

This month we turn the spotlight on American funny man, Ashton Kutcher

Best known for long-running American sitcom That ’70s Show, Ashton Kutcher has been charming audiences for the past 13 years. With modelling, acting and producing under his belt, he’s just been confirmed as Charlie Sheen’s replacement in Two and a Half Men. Christopher Ashton Kutcher American Actor, Producer and Comedian Born February 7 1978 From Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA

* Christopher Ashton Kutcher

was born and raised in Iowa by his Roman Catholic parents Larry, a factory worker, and Diane, an employee of consumer product giant Proctor and Gamble. He shared his childhood with an older sister Tausha, and his fraternal twin Michael.

* Moving to Homestead at the age of 12, he was a prominent sports enthusiast and all round popular kid. However, his home life was very different. His twin Michael suffered 14

from heart complications, which made Ashton’s life very stressful. He admitted that during adolescence he contemplated committing suicide and, aged 13, he attempted to jump from a hospital balcony; thankfully his father intervened.

* Kutcher’s home life worsened

as his parents divorced when he was 16. During this difficult time, he broke into his high school at midnight with his cousin in an attempt to steal money. He was consequently arrested and sentenced to three years’ probation and 180 hours community service.

* After this wake up call, he

enrolled at the University of Iowa in August 1996. Motivated by the desire to find a cure for his brother’s heart ailment, he planned to major in biochemical engineering. However, he was kicked out of his dorm room for being too wild and noisy. To pay for his uni tuition, Ashton worked in the cereal section of a department store plant in Iowa, and often donated blood for money.

* While he was at university,

he was spotted by a model scout and recruited to enter the “Fresh Faces of Iowa” modelling competition.

* After winning first place, he

dropped out of uni and won a trip to New York City to the International Modeling and Talent Association convention.

* He lost out to Transformers actor Josh Duhamel in a modeling competition in 1998, signed with Next modelling agency in New York, and appeared in adverts for Calvin Klein, modelled in Paris and Milan runway shows and appeared in a Pizza Hut commercial in the US. Following his stay in NYC, he then relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. * Back in LA, he auditioned

for the lead role in a new television series That ’70s Show, and was successfully booked for it straight away. The extremely popular comedy show ran for eight years, and catapulted Kutcher to stardom.

* Following on from his comic

success, he was cast in the lead roles for the smash hit of 2000 Dude, Where’s My Car, Just Married in 2003 with Brittany Murphy and 2004’s The Butterfly Effect. This thriller film was fairly out of character for Kutcher, but proved to be a box office smash.

* 2003 saw the arrival of

Punk’d, the American hidden camera/practical joke television series produced and hosted by Kutcher. He played practical jokes on an array of celebrities, and filmed their reactions, which were always hilarious.

* He also produces television

show Beauty and the Geek through his production company Katalyst Films, which he runs with partner and fellow producer Jason Goldberg.

* In 2003, Kutcher began dat-

ing actress Demi Moore. This began as a controversial relationship, with Moore being 16 years his elder. However, they proved critics wrong by marrying in 2005 and maintaining one of the strongest marriages in celebdom.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

They proved critics wrong by marrying in 2005 and maintaining one of the strongest marriages in celebdom

* Kutcher and Moore openly

live their lives following the teachings of Kabbalah, the controversial religion that has a huge celebrity following, including Madonna and Natalie Portman.

* It would be impossible to feature Ashton Kutcher without mentioning Twitter. Ashton (or aplusk being his Twitter name) is a champion Tweeter, and became the first user of Twitter to have more than one million followers.

* After Charlie Sheen’s recent

breakdown and admittance to rehab for substance abuse, Ashton has been chosen to replace him as the lead in the show, Two and a Half Men. According to the rumours he will make his debut in the autumn.

FILM RELEASES The celebrity world of cinema

Laura-Jane Bruce keeps you up to date with the newest film releases to hit cinema screens this month. She puts you smack bang in the middle of all films in production and gossip from the set

Green Lantern

Bad Teacher

Some teachers just don’t give an F. For example, there’s Elizabeth; she’s foul-mouthed, ruthless, and inappropriate. She drinks, she gets high, and she can’t wait to marry her meal ticket and get out of her bogus day job. When she’s dumped by her fiancé, she sets her plan in motion to win over a rich, handsome substitute – competing for his affections with an overly energetic colleague, Amy. When Elizabeth also finds herself fighting off the advances of a sarcastic, irreverent gym teacher, the consequences of her wild and outrageous schemes give her students, her

co-workers, and even herself an education like no other. Starring Starring Cameron Diaz, Eric Stonestreet, Lucy Punch. Rated 15.

Bridesmaids

Annie’s life is a mess. But when she finds out her lifetime best friend is engaged, she simply must serve as Lillian’s maid of honour. Though lovelorn and broke, Annie bluffs her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals. With one chance to get it perfect, she’ll show Lillian and her bridesmaids just how far you’ll go for someone you love.

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries; protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the universe their fate, and the fate of Earth, lies in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan. Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never

The Hangover Part II is director Todd Phillips’ follow-up to 2009’s smash hit The Hangover, which became the highest-grossing 15-rated comedy of all time, and also won the Golden Globe for Best Film, Comedy or Musical. Reprising their roles from first film, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha will star in the film. Jeffrey Tambor, Ken Jeong and Mike Tyson also rejoin the cast.

harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris, if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax...he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.

In The Hangover Part II, Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don’t always go as planned. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens in Bangkok can’t even be imagined. Starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis. Rated 15.

X-Men: First Class, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were arch-enemies, they were the closest of friends, working together with other mutants (some familiar, some new) to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men. Starring James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Bacon, Michael Fassbender. Rated PG 13.

Super 8

With direction from Lost creator J.J Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg, there is no doubt this film will be epic. In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a Super 8 movie, and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly afterwards, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined. Starring Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka. Rated PG 13.

TOM CRUISE has denied claims

that he is trying to stop the production of a movie that could reveal secrets of Scientology. It had been previously reported that Cruise was attempting to halt filming on an upcoming film called The Master, because it concerns a religion similar to Scientology and proposes to unveil details about the religion’s practices. However, Cruise’s rep has called those claims untrue. Cruise was reportedly approached to appear on Glee recently. The actor is currently filming Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

Speaking of Glee, JANE LYNCH is to play the head nun of an orphanage in the Farrelly brothers’ The Three Stooges. Her character will reportedly try to get the three brothers, Moe, Larry and Curly, who are first shown as children, thrown out of the orphanage. Lynch is the latest addition to the project, which has been in the works since 2007.

JOHNNY KNOXVILLE, SEAN PENN and Benicio Del Toro have

all been in the running to play a brother in the comedy.

MARK WAHLBERG has revealed that he is planning to work on an upcoming project with JUSTIN BIEBER. The actor revealed that he is currently preparing the yet-tobe announced Paramount film, which will star the Never Say Never teenager. The film is reported to be a drama, so it will be miles away from the shiny, butter-wouldn’t-melt image that Bieber is normally associated with. The upcoming sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra has reportedly been given an official title, as well as a start date for production. Filming will begin in New Orleans this September and run through to November. No official decision has been made regarding the film’s shooting location. However, reports confirm

that the proposed sequel is currently titled G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes. The sequel will see CHANNING TATUM reprise his role as lead character Duke. G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes is currently scheduled for release in August 2012. US chat show Saturday Night Live star JASON SUDEIKIS, will host the 20th annual MTV Movie Awards. Sudeikis will become the ninth cast member from the long-running comedy show to compere the awards ceremony. The actor’s role was confirmed by Ryan Seacrest on his On Air radio show. Sudeikis’s other screen credits include Hall Pass, Going the Distance and 30 Rock. Previous hosts for the MTV Movie Awards include Aziz Ansari, Sarah Silverman, JESSICA ALBA and LINDSAY LOHAN. The MTV Movie Awards will be broadcast on MTV, Sunday June 5. Jeremy Renner and JENNIFER LOPEZ have been confirmed to voice characters for Ice Age 4. Renner will play Gutt, a self-styled master of the high seas; while American Idol judge Lopez has signed on to provide the voice for the sabre-toothed Shira, a love interest for Denis Leary’s Diego. Parks and Recreation regular Aziz Ansari and musician DRAKE as well as WANDA SYKES and Keke Palmer have also joined the cast for the animated feature, titled Ice Age: Continental Drift. In addition to Leary, the list of stars announced to reprise their roles from the previous films include RAY ROMANO, QUEEN LATIFAH, John Leguizamo, SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT and Josh Peck. Ice Age: Continental Drift has been slated for a July 13 2012 release and will be produced by Blue Sky Studios, whose last feature was Rio. It has been reported that ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER will return to his iconic role as the Terminator. The actor has signed up for what will become the fifth film in the franchise, which was created by Avatar director JAMES CAMERON. It is alleged that Sony and Lionsgate, Universal and CBS Films are considering a Schwarzenegger-centric deal worth $25 million upfront, excluding personnel fees.

RUSSELL CROWE is considering making his directorial debut with the police drama 77. The project, which is scripted by Law & Order writer David Matthews, connects the murder of an LAPD officer in 1974 and a shootout between the police force and the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1975. Crowe’s previous directorial experience

includes his documentary Texas, which follows the antics of his band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. He has also been attached to surfer movie Bra Boys and the World War II drama The Long Green Shore. In 2010, he directed his musician wife Danielle Spencer’s video for her song Wish I’d Been Here. Universal Pictures has confirmed a release date for the fourth movie in the American Pie series. The comedy sequel titled American Reunion will be released on April 6 2012. The fourth big-screen installment will see the original cast members organising a 10-year reunion via Facebook. The movie will show how the characters’ lives have changed since 2003’s American Wedding.

JASON BIGGS, SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT, TARA REID, CHRIS KLEIN and ALYSON HANNIGAN are among the cast members

confirmed to return. The American Pie series has grossed more than $750 million at the worldwide box office, and spawned several direct-toDVD movies with Eugene Levy.

TAYLOR LAUTNER has revealed that he finds the idea of a Twilight spinoff to be intriguing. Author Stephenie Meyer recently stated that she would consider writing a further story in the supernatural series about Jacob Black and Renesmee Cullen. Lautner spoke about the possibility of reprising the role of Jacob in a future film adaptation. However, the 19 year old went on to state that he is not opposed to the idea of continuing the Twilight series. The actor has revealed that he has accepted losing his privacy in order to be a movie star. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 opens in cinemas on November 18. WOODY HARRELSON, STANLEY TUCCI and LENNY KRAVITZ have all been extended offers to star in the highly-anticipated adaptation of Suzanne Collins’s dystopian novel. Hailed as the next Twilight, The Hunger Games tells the story of a futuristic world in which children fight to the death in a

televised competition known as the Hunger Games. Should he choose to accept the role, Harrelson would reportedly play head gamemaker, Seneca Crane. There is no word yet on who Tucci or Kravitz would play. ELIZABETH BANKS also recently joined the cast of the film as Effie Trinket. The movie also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson. John C. Reilly has been reportedly offered the role of Haymitch, though he has yet to accept. The Hunger Games is scheduled to open in cinemas in March 2012. Former Disney actress VANESSA HUDGENS has reportedly entered

into negotiations to star in a new indie film opposite BRENDAN FRASER. Hudgens has begun final talks to join the cast of Gimme Shelter, a drama which will be both written and directed by Amexica producer Ron Krauss. If cast in the project, Hudgens will play a pregnant runaway teenager who escapes her abusive mother and tries to discover her real father. Fraser has already been cast in the role of the girl’s father, who also throws the girl out after she refuses to have her unborn child aborted. Gimme Shelter is expected to begin production at the end of May. G.I. Joe star CHANNING TATUM will play the lead role in a new film inspired by his life as a 19-year-old male stripper. Tatum, who has previously said that he is not ashamed of his stripper past, will play the titular character in Magic Mike, a film that will see Tatum reunited with his Haywire director Steven Soderbergh. He recently announced plans to retire from the film industry after his next few projects, which include a remake of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. starring GEORGE CLOONEY and a biopic of eccentric pianist Liberace starring MICHAEL DOUGLAS. No start date has been announced for production on Magic Mike.

THE BEST ALBUM RELEASES Laura-Jane Bruce reviews the latest album releases from around the globe and uncovers the latest scandals and hearsay from the celebs

Cd releases, concerts and rock snippets

Vanessa Carlton

Rabbits on the Run Vanessa Lee Carlton is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. Rabbits on the Run will be the fourth album she has released since starting in the music business nine years ago. She released Carousel, the first single from the album, last month to worldwide acclaim. Along with singing and performing, Carlton has a passion for charity work, and collaborates closely with many organisations, including Cape Farewell, which studies climate change, and the hugely famous PETA.

Selena Gomez and the Scene

All Time Low

Dirty Work All Time Low is a relatively unknown band over here. However, in the US, they are huge and they are looking to break into our charts too. Formed in 2003, this alternative rock band from Baltimore has released three albums to date – Dirty Work will be their fourth. It was scheduled for a March release, but due to changes with record label Interscope Records, this had to be pushed back. The first single I Feel Like Dancin’ was released in April.

Owl City

All Things Bright and Beautiful American electronic/synthpop artist Adam Young is the singer-songwriter and multiinstrumentalist behind Owl City. Famed for major hit Fireflies, Young actually formed Owl City whilst suffering from insomnia. All Things Bright and Beautiful is his third album under the name Owl City, but is also part of a musical project known as Sky Sailing, which moves away from his usual electronica genre of music and introduces acoustic guitar and piano accompaniments into his work. His first album under this new project is entitled An Airplane Carried Me to Bed and was released in July last year.

18

Def Leppard

Mirrorball Also known as Mirrorball: Live and More, this twodisc album will include live recordings, three new studio tracks and a DVD containing both concert and backstage footage. This band has been going strong for 34 years and has sold over 65 million albums worldwide. They are also one of only five rock bands with two original studio albums selling over 10 million copies in the US. They have had nine different member changes, and the current members have been singing together for 19 years; the longest-standing line up.

Limp Bizkit

Gold Cobra Nu metal rock band Limp Bizkit has sold an estimated 33 million albums worldwide. Formed 16 years ago, it includes five members, the most famous being Fred Durst. Gold Cobra was initially scheduled for release in early 2010, but the band came across similar issues as All Time Low with Interscope pushing the release date back by almost a year. Due to having so much time on their hands, Limp Bizkit ended up recording so many songs that they had to create another album, which they will release in 2012.

Who Says Selena Gomez and the Scene was formed in 2008 by Disney actress Selena Gomez. Who Says is the band’s third album. Britney Spears has penned three tracks on the album, one of which is scheduled to be released as a second or third single, after the lead single Who Says. The sounds on the album haven’t particularly changed much over the years, sticking with its rock and dance elements. A summer tour to accompany the album release begins next month.

RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS

THE FEELING has an-

nounced a number of collaborations for its new album including link-ups with Roisin Murphy,

Betty Boo and SOPHIE ELLIS BEXTOR – wife of The Feel-

ing bassist Richard Jones - while dance duo The Freemasons has production credits. The Fill My Little World band is currently preparing to release its new album Together We Were Made later this year. Along with a single disc edition of the album, the group has revealed that it will be releasing a special double disc edition, which will include a number of brand new songs.

TINIE TEMPAH has decided

to postpone the recording of his second album so he can concentrate on cracking the US market. The London-born rapper previously stated that he was aiming to release the follow-up to his 2010 number one album Disc-Overy at the end of the year. However, Tempah – real name Patrick Okogwu – has now decided to delay the album until 2012 in order to capitalise on his recent success in the US. Tinie Tempah is due to play a number of festivals on both sides of the Atlantic, having been confirmed for Radio 1’s Big Weekend in the UK and Lollapalooza in the US.

ARETHA FRANKLIN is to

release a new record this month. Aretha: A Woman Falling Out of Love is the soul singer’s first studio album since 2003’s So Damn Happy. It will also be her first release on her own label Aretha Records, which she founded in 2005. It reportedly features her version of My Country ‘Tis Of Thee, a song which she performed at Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony in 2009.

Kasabian guitarist SERGE PIZZORNO has described the

drummer Chad Smith has revealed that the band’s new album is due to be released at the end of August. The By The Way star announced the news in an interview and also said that the working title for the new album is Dr Johnny Skinz’s Disproportionately Rambunctious Polar Express Machine-head (what a mouthful!), but when asked if the band had come up with a final title for the LP, Smith responded with “no name”.

SERENA WILLIAMS is apparently laying down some rap tracks. The professional tennis player, who recently underwent several health scares, including a foot injury that discounted her from the current playing season and a blood clot in her lungs, is thought to have been recording in a friend’s studio. It is not known when the sportswoman, who also owns part of the Miami Dolphins and works as a fashion designer and spokeswoman for clothing lines, is planning to release the records. PETER ANDRE has admitted that his future career will be primarily outside of the music industry. The Mysterious Girl singer claimed that his main passion will always be music, but said that he is a realist and knows that he isn’t able to compete with younger pop acts. Speaking about his musical plans, Andre said that he would be shifting away from his Michael Jackson-influenced recent tours and showcasing more of his rock influences. Andre also revealed that his ideal job would be taking on the part of Ron Burgundy in Anchorman. The reality TV star said that the Will Ferrell bigscreen comedy was his dream role. Make sure you catch Peter Andre at the Marbella Bullring on July 22. THE STROKES bassist Nikolai

Fraiture has revealed that the band has already started work on its fifth studio album. The Under Cover of Darkness band reached number three in the UK and number four in the US last month with its fourth record Angles, but were quick to reveal that they

were planning a follow-up. The band has also previously confirmed that they are planning to embark on a world tour with their newly-released material.

Actress Hayden Panettiere is officially back on the market! The pint-sized Scream 4 star has called it quits with Ukrainian Boxer, Wladimir Klitschko after two years. Time and distance are said to be the cause of the mutual split with Klitschko commenting, “We had a great time together but it’s not that easy to manage a relationship between two continents.” Panettiere recently spoke out about the couples’ sex life, announcing that fans never ceased to question how it worked with the 15 inch height difference between the pair. “Where there is a will, there is a way,” the star joked at the time.

After what has felt like the longest wait in entertainment history the US X Factor line up has finally been revealed. Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole will be joining forces stateside, with Antonio “LA” Reid, famed record producer being named the third judge. The second female spot was the last to be announced, with Paula Abdul filling the final chair. Pussycat Doll, Nicole Scherzinger who was previously rumoured to be the front runner for the coveted seat next to Mr Cowell, will now be taking a place on the other side of the judges’ table. Scherzinger, who impressed producers during her time as a guest judge on the UK X Factor, has been hired to co-host the show with British TV personality, Steve Jones. Jones, who is relatively unknown in the States, spoke of his new position to the Daily Mail, “I couldn’t be happier to be coming to the X Factor. I have been approached about working in the States before, but never felt right about those opportunities. But when the X Factor came up, I leapt at the opportunity.”

During his final series of Two and a Half Men actor Charlie Sheen, who was recently fired from the series due to his self-destructive behaviour, borrowed 10 million dollars from Warner Bros under the condition that he would pay back the loan from his final paychecks. While it is believed that Sheen paid back the full amount, questions have surfaced as to why the highest paid television actor in the world would need to borrow the money, when he was earning two million dollars per episode. Rumours that Hugh Grant was to take on Sheen’s role have now been quashed after confirmation that Ashton Kutcher has been named as the replacement, although he will play an entirely new character. Despite initially criticising his successor, Sheen has since publically congratulated Kutcher on his new role.

Hollywood’s hottest new A-List couple has taken the next step in their relationship. Actress Scarlett Johanssen has reportedly moved into 50-year-old Sean Penn’s Malibu home after only three months of dating. The stars, who are both recently divorced, haven’t been shy about their relationship, showcasing their feelings in a very public display of affection at The White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington DC, in the presence of President Barack Obama, Mila Kunis and Donald Trump.

King, who only split from boyfriend of two years, Andy Brown in February, has publicised her love of good old fashioned romance, an attribute I am sure she will find in her new prince charming.

New mum, Mariah Carey welcomes home twins Moroccan and Monroe. Carey revealed the inspiration behind the unusual names, explaining baby boy Moroccan’s name carries great sentimental value for the new parents. The boy was named after the top tier of Mariah’s Manhattan apartment, The Moroccan Room, where father Nick Cannon proposed in 2008. His middle name, Scott is Cannon’s middle name and the maiden name of his grandmother. Monroe is named after her mother’s idol, Marilyn Monroe. Like her mother, Monroe does not have a middle name. The twins’ trip home was a little later than expected, as Child Protection Services were called in after complaints were made that alcohol was being consumed around the babies in hospital. Cannon explained on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight how the case has now been resolved and revealed the truth behind the investigation. “It all started when a nurse suggested to my wife that if you drink Guinness, or a small amount of Guinness, the dark beer, that the yeast improves breastfeeding.”

different crowd filling the aisles. 85 year old Hugh Hefner is set to tie the knot with 25 year old Crystal Harris on June 18 2011 at the infamous Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles, California. Whilst the rest of the world can’t ignore the obvious age gap, Harris is said to, “Not notice it,” and commented that she has to, “Keep up with him.” During Hefner’s previous seven-year relationship with Las Vegas star Holly Madison he publically announced that marriage wasn’t “part of the puzzle”, and although he believed he and Madison would be together for the rest of their lives, he commented that his previous failed marriages were the reason for his decision. So what is it that Crystal Harris has that all the previous Girls Next Door didn’t? It seems it will be one of the great mysteries of life that we may never know, or at least that Hef will live to tell.

It seems that a love child is the reason behind former Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s split with Maria Shriver. After 25 years of marriage the power couple was thought to have one of the most solid marriages in Hollywood. The 63-year-old Terminator star has admitted to fathering a child with a member of his household staff over a decade ago. The member of staff supposedly worked for the Schwarzenegger family for 20 years, retiring in January 2011. Shriver who only found out about the child earlier this year, has four children with Schwarzenegger and is said to be completely devastated by the news.

absolutely love getting ready for a big night out. There is nothing better than getting a group of your closest girlies together, cranking up the music and fighting over the mirror, while sharing make-up tips. My party look is all about the eyes. Dark and sultry; it is definitely a statement look. The ritual starts with Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, an exceptional beauty booster, which immediately eliminates all signs of fatigue; your facial features appear rested and smooth. I slap a thick layer all over my face and neck, paying special attention to the dark circles under my eyes, lie back and relax for 20 minutes. After removing the balm, I apply moisturiser and eye cream, really massaging in the cream, using circular upward strokes to plump up the skin. I would recommend waiting 10 minutes before applying any make-up. I use this time to put my Carmen Rollers in (yes, sometimes the oldies are still the goodies!).

Every month our health and beauty expert, Nicola McGeorge spill the beans on the behind-the-scenes gossip and tricks of the trade

Beauty

As I do not want my make-up sliding down my face while I am dancing on the tables, I prime my skin with Benefit’s ‘That Gal,’ a silky, pink primer, which takes your complexion from dull to darling. If I need more luminescence, then I mix a drop of Benefit’s High Beam into my foundation: Chanel’s Vitalumiere Satin Smoothing Fluid Makeup. Using the Body Shop’s make-up sponge, I apply only where needed, (for me that is usually my whole face and neck area). Always make sure that you blend well along the jaw line. There is nothing worse than seeing a woman with an orange face and white neck with that tell-tale tide mark stopping at her jaw. I just want to go up and say, “Look in the mirror and BLEND WOMAN.”

My worst buy of the year had to be my x 7 magnifying mirror. That thing is evil. However, it is very handy for putting on my Make Up Forever HD concealer. Again, only use where needed. My dark circles always need a bit of extra attention; a little YSL Touche Eclat makes all the difference. Now groom brows into shape using an old toothbrush and hairspray. Define with MAC’s eyebrow pencil; if the effect is too harsh soften it with a little eye shadow in similar colour. Prime eyelids with Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion, which is coveted by make-up artists because it guarantees more vibrant eye shadow that lasts for 24+ hours and never creases. Cover the whole upper lid in Bourjois Effet Smoky Pencil in Intense Black. Now for the tricky bit. For the ultimate smoky eyes you need to create a triangle from your outer eye corner. Draw a straight line from the highest point of your upper lid. Then from

THE BEAUTY BAROMETER

the outer corner of your eye draw a diagonal line until the two lines meet. Fill in the triangle and remove any excess with a cotton bud. Press Urban Decay’s Oil Slick eyeshadow gently over the whole lid and triangle, blending out the edges. Bring the shadow under your eye and line the lower lid. Finally, line the rim of your eye with the pencil to really create a dramatic effect. To really open the eyes up, curl your lashes with Shu Uemura eyelash curler and then coat with YSL’s Faux Effects mascara in Noir. II know you are probably thinking that I cannot possibly be able to put more make-up on the eye area, but bear with me. The liquid eyeliner makes all the difference. Rest your elbow on a flat surface and line the upper lid with Loreal’s Super Liner; it really is fool proof.

Rather than opt for the full-on false eyelash effect, a makeup artist taught me the following trick. Take Cheryl’s Girls Aloud Party Lashes by Eyelure and cut about 1.5cms off the outer edges. I highly recommend the Duo Adhesive glue from MAC. There is nothing worse than being in the middle of dinner and your lashes fall into your soup. (Yes that has happened to me, to the disgust of the rest of the guests at the table.) Glue the “mini” lashes to the outer corners of your eyes and cover any gaps with the liquid liner. If you want to deepen your face colour, then apply MAC’s bronzer in Golden. Smile and finish off with Benefit’s Dallas on the apples of your cheeks.

Personally, I always adhere to the make-up rule of either eyes or lips. As we are not going for the Drag Queen look, the lips should be kept neutral in this instance. Moisturise with Elizabeth Arden’s 8 Hour Cream and lightly line with MACS lip pencil in Spice. Using the excess foundation from your sponge, dab gently onto your lips to create a gorgeous glossy nude. Don’t forget your body. Mix Benefit’s High Beam in with your moisturiser and apply it to your legs, arms and chest for an all over glow. If you are lacking in the cleavage department, a clever trick is to use bronzer in the cleavage line to create the illusion of depth and then High Beam over the breast area, creating the illusion of volume. Ta da! Now you really are ready to party.

THE ULTIMATE HAIR REPAIR It’s like Botox for the hair! By Nicola McGeorge

S

ummer is finally here. While this means fun trips to the beach and delicious dips in the pool, the mixture of sun, sea and chlorine can cause havoc on your hair. As they say prevention is better than cure, now is the time to start giving your locks a little TLC. The team at Wood Salon offers a variety of treatments, which they customise to the individual. Director and owner, Zoe Woods explains, “No client is the same, and therefore we review each person’s hair before creating a treatment to target their specific needs.” I spotted a stunning lady with the glossiest mane I have ever seen having her hair curled. “She has just had the long hair treatment,” says Zoe reading my thoughts. The latest addition to the salon is Redken’s “Time Reset”, a new hair care collection and in-salon service that targets “ageing” hair. Now what exactly does that mean? “This isn’t a treatment just for our more mature

clients,” laughs Zoe. “If you have very long hair, think just how old the tips are? Heat styling in particular will take its toll, whether you’re 25 or 55.” Redken identifies five signs of aging hair – texture change, diminished density, fragility, dryness and dullness, and its new services and products were developed to help combat these tell-tale issues. The line is infused with camelia oil (to soften brittle hair and add shine), peptides and ceramides (to strengthen and repair), green tea and cationic UV filters (to prevent future damage) together with Redken’s proprietary ingredient Intra-Cylane, which fills in gaps on the cuticle layer to plump up fine hair. In Wood Salon, the Time Reset service includes a shampoo followed by an application of Time Reset Filler Shot Phase (a concentrated IntraCylane treatment), a spray sealer and then a deep filler treatment, which lasts up to 10 shampoos.

n 2004, I arrived in Marbella expecting the same standards in the beauty industry as London. How wrong could I have been? I had been wearing fibre, nail extensions for over five years, and didn’t think it would be a big deal to find a nail technician to take care of my in-fills. Nine snapped-off nails and one green infected nail bed later, I finally found Laura, the owner of The Nail Place and haven’t left since. She created thin, perfectly square-oval nails, with a straight, hand painted French tip, that didn’t budge until my next appointment.

Healthy Eating The Easy Way Fresh, delicious meal ingredients delivered straight to your door

T

he concept of having healthy, nutritious meals delivered to your home has taken the UK by storm over the past few years. Finally, it has made its way to Spanish shores via the company 5 Dinners 5 Dinners is a new cooking concept created by diet and nutrition expert Christine Zellen, as a result of seeing many of her friends struggle to find the time to plan, buy and cook well balanced food for their families whilst having a full-time job and children The 5 dinners “food bag” contains fresh vegetables, root vegetables, fish, chicken, meat and whole grains. In fact, all you need to get all the essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements your body needs to function optimally. “A healthy nutritious diet does not mean that food needs to be boring,” she explains. “People think that healthy food is eating a salad every day. I will be showing you that you can still enjoy your food even when it is packed with nutrients.”

The concept of 5 Dinners works like this:

1

You place your order for two or four people for a minimum of one week (this will give you ingredients and recipes to cook five meals for either two or four people). The Alternative To Liposuction

A non-invasive treatment for permanent removal of fat and cellulite

I

f exercise and dieting just do not seem to be shifting those extra pounds, this may be the answer that you are looking for. The Sunlounge Solarium in Nueva Andalucía is now offering high-power, low-frequency ultrasound cavitation that really works for cellulite and local fat loss. This is combined with radiofrequency for maximum results and value for money. Areas such as inner and outer thighs, stomach and the dreaded love handles can all be targeted.

So how does it work?

* It increases fat cell membrane perme-

ability, which results in the release of fat into the bloodstream. * It creates gas bubbles (cavities) inside the fat cells, which expand and consequently implode, breaking the fat cell membrane. This results in fat release into the bloodstream, as well as the elimination of the fat cell itself. (Adipocytes, being very fragile cells, are damaged, whilst other cells, such as fibroblasts, stay intact and actually benefit from the stimulus provided by ultrasound.) * It provides mechanical stimulation, which encourages the fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin fibres, thereby creating a skin-tightening effect.

Many women feel, see and touch the difference immediately after the treatment, or the day after. You can expect to lose 1 - 1.5cms on your first session. However, three to four sessions are required for results to become really evident. In most cases, a course of eight to 12 sessions is recommended for best results. There is zero down time. All in all, you can go straight back to work, exercise or play straight after your session. The Sunlounge Solarium is also offering a face lifting treatment, using the smaller head from the caviation machine. Used alongside its dermatological skin care products Cell Fusion C, dramatic results can be achieved. It is perfect for before a party or big event; your whole face and neck area will appear tightened and lifted, while wrinkles and fine lines are greatly reduced. FITNESS TIPS Heidi Klum is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful women in the world. However, she has to work hard to maintain her physique. Here, David Kirsch, her personal trainer, shares his fitness philosophy and key moves to get into shape

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

We reveal the secrets of feeling and looking great

A

s a single father of twenty-month-old twin girls and a business owner, the key to my successful navigation through the many tasks and responsibilities that I face every day is following the precepts I lay out for optimal nutrition and regular workouts in my book, The Ultimate New York Diet. The job as a single father – the most important job I have – requires me to stay focused and energised at work, and patient and playful at home with my girls. There is little margin for deviating from my wellness plan if I am to remain 24/7 with my girls, while being a successful business owner.

You might ask: how I do it?

Prioritising is the key to successfully accomplishing all of my tasks and responsibilities. First thing every morning (before the girls get up), I find time – as little as five minutes and as much as 30 minutes – to connect my brain and my body. Stretching, yoga, pushups and jogging in place, are just some of the things I choose to do on a daily basis. This is followed by a healthy breakfast that the girls and I share consisting of steel-cut oatmeal, organic eggs and berries. It’s then off to the office where I work with clients, meet with co-workers and run my business. Throughout the day, I stay optimally fuelled, focused and energised with small meals – David Kirsch Protein Plus Shakes, almonds, KIRSCHBARS™ and Energy Bubbles. At the end of the day, it is time for me to put my parent hat on again. My girls don’t care how challenging my day has been. They want dad to be ready to read, dance, go to the park and delight them. This is followed by one of my home cooked meals for me and the girls, reading hour and bed. I couldn’t do or be all of these things if I didn’t first take care of myself. Remember: to be there for others, you need to first be there for yourself.

David’s exercise suggestions Aim to do the circuit three times, 15-20 reps each.

Curls

1. Retract your shoulder blades and hold your elbows in at the sides. Keep your core tight, knees soft. 2. Once everything is in the right position, simply contract your bicep. Don’t let your shoulder rotate forward. *Focus on the contraction and isolate the muscle you want to work!

Spiderman Push Ups

1. Get in the push up position. 2. Extend your right arms as far as it will go while bringing your left knee in. Drop down for a pushup. 3. Return to the push up position. 4. Repeat on the opposite site.

Diamond Push Ups

1. Place your belly on a stability ball and your hands on the floor in front of the ball. Walk your hands forward until you are in a pushup position - depending your strength, your thighs, shins or toes should be on the ball. Whichever position you choose, don’t let your hips sink! 2. Adjust your palms so that your forefingers and thumbs touch one another, forming a diamond shape. 3. Bend your elbows in towards your sides as you lower to the floor. Exhale, and return to start position.

Squats

1. Start with your feet shoulder-width distance apart and perfectly upright posture. 2. Bend at the knees, keeping your weight over your heels until your thighs are parallel to the floor. *If you’re feeling it in your quads, stop and realign getting your weight back to your heels.

Famed white and silver party at stunning beach club Photos by Ruth Jones Ocean Club has done it again! Defying the rain, Ocean Club set up a cosy atmosphere by covering and protecting the venue from all the elements. The entertainment was truly amazing; outer worldly mingling model animations and dancers in extraordinary fashion designs, a creative laser show, romantic aerialists suspended at a dizzying height over the swimming pool and, of course, some great tunes from the DJ’s as they also celebrated the release of the official OC Limited & Exclusive summer album. The drinks were flowing and delicious canapés were served. The spectacular firework finale finished the evening off with a bang. With such a great start to the summer, we can’t wait to see what else they have in store for the season.

Exhibiting the latest artisans in Marbella Photos by Ruth Jones The Casino in Marbella was the location of a spectacular party that took place last month. The event opened a joint exhibition by the versatile artist, Elena Nevado and sculptor, David Marshall. The whole evening was connected to nature, with Elena’s signature choice of subject: Native American and Spanish horses, and David Marshall using natural elements in order to create his art. If you missed out, the exhibition is open to the public until June 7, every day from 8pm.

FALSE FREELANCER The difficult economic situation has affected Spanish companies in many different ways. One of them is the search for alternative ways of hiring staff. As a consequence, the replacement of employees for so-called “false freelancers” has become a very common irregularity in Spanish companies

But what exactly is a “false freelancer”? The term refers to a person rendering services to a company through a mercantile agreement, even though his work should be executed by means of an ordinary labour contract.

Fátima Vera is a lawyer a Lexland Abogados. She is a labour law specialist.

It is not difficult to imagine why many companies have decided to adopt this type of mercantile relationship as it simply saves them a lot of money.

Accordingly, the Spanish law states that an ordinary labour relationship exists when, for example, the freelancer is subject to a standard working schedule imposed by the company; when he has to be in compliance with his employer’s orders and instructions; when the company possesses the authority to sanction him; when he uses the company’s work tools; and when he receives a periodical settlement.

By hiring false employees the company does not have to make the mandatory contributions to the Spanish Social Security and in case of an “unfair” dismissal the employee would neither be entitled to severance payment nor could he apply for unemployment benefit.

Therefore, if the above facts are ascertained by a Spanish court, the freelancer would be entitled to the rights of an ordinary employee with a regular work contract. In the case of an unfair dismissal, the “false freelancer” would also receive a severance payment of 45 days of salary per year of service.

Nevertheless, whether a freelancer should be considered an “ordinary employee” or not, depends on his daily work situation and not on the type of contract executed by both parties.

Moreover, the company will have to reimburse the corresponding contribution rates for the lack of payment to the Spanish social security, plus a 20 percent surcharge. In addition to that, very serious administrative fines could be imposed on the company. To sum up, employers are advised to be careful because this kind of fraud may turn out to be quite expensive if they get caught. If you think you might be a “false freelancer”, do not waste any time and contact a lawyer in order to demand your rights as soon as possible. And do not forget that if you have been dismissed you only have 20 working days to claim your labour relationship.

DRIVE ON!

Our in-depth motoring review

one of a kind CARLSSON C25

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the C25

T

he more money someone has, the less they like the idea of having something that many others own too. A strong sense of individuality spurs them on to seek out things their peers do not, or cannot have, and there will always be companies prepared to meet their needs. One of these companies is Mercedes tuner, Carlsson, which unveiled its C25 Coupe in 2010 to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Based on the SL65 AMG chassis and drivetrain, the C25 is a coach-built super GT with a 429,000 euro price tag.

72

DRIVE ON!

73

DRIVE ON!

Sometimes the majority of a run of limited edition cars ends up in one country like the US or Japan, which is not good for exclusivity since the chance of meeting another one just like it, becomes that much greater. If exclusivity at this level is important to you, the next best thing to owning the only car of its type in the world is having the only one in your country. On that basis, Carlsson will only sell one C25 to each market. At this exalted level, cylinder count is important, and with 12-cylinders and a pair of turbochargers under its carbonfibre bonnet, the C25 has a head start. Out of the box, the standard 5,513cc twin-turbo V12 in the SL600 has 517hp and 830Nm of torque. The AMG tuned 5,980cc version of this engine in the SL65 AMG boasts 612hp and a whopping 1,000Nm of torque. Carlsson then raises the ante even further. No internal modifications are necessary and the intake system is untouched as it flows enough air to the larger, more efficient intercooler system to allow boost pressure to be raised from 1.5 to 1.8 bar. On the exhaust side, larger downpipes and free-flowing 200 cell metal catalytic converters help to get the unburned gases away faster. Finally, the ECU remap optimizes all the new parameters around the cooler intake charge and lower exhaust backpressure. The dyno printout showed 753hp at 5,000rpm, with a staggering 1,280Nm of torque at 3,750rpm. But as this amount of twisting force would blow the gearbox and rear differential to pieces, it is electrically reined in to 1,150Nm between 2,000 and 4,000rpm. Speaking of blowing things up, Dipl. Ing. Matthias Löcher, Carlsson’s Technical Director, told me that on the first dyno run, the expelled gases were so strong that they blew the extractors that take the burnt gases out of the building, clean off the exhaust pipes! For all its major league supercar power and looks, the C25 is a luxury GT rather than a super sports car. It is a supremely fast car in the Ferrari 599GTB mould, designed to munch continents with contemptuous ease, while cosseting its occupants in its bespoke interior. A decade on from its launch, the SL’s flowing interior still looks modern and works just fine. While Carlsson’s bespoke carbon-fibre instrument binnacle cover changes the appearance of the instrument pod and the centre console has been angled towards the driver, SL owners will find the view from behind the C25’s chunky steering wheel very familiar. Not only do these two aesthetically pleasing modifications make ergonomic sense, they are changes that Mercedes itself might apply to its next generation flagship roadster. Beyond that, Carlsson redesigned the seat padding and applied the highest grades of leather to the seats, dashboard, door panels and bulkhead. The centre panels of the doors and seats are trimmed in quilted leather and Alcantara is used on the A-pillars and headlining. Mercedes options are expensive, but most of the musthave kit that an owner would expect at this level like COMAND sat-nav is standard. However, while two-colour leather is included in the C25’s specification, any extra colours are a cost option.

74

The trim inserts on my test car were matt black carbonfibre. Importantly, this was real carbon-fibre as opposed to the carbon look trims you sometimes see on tuner cars. The lightweight open door bins are made from this material, and replace the hinged leather compartments under the SL’s door armrests. Rolf Schepp, Carlsson’s in-house designer, responsible for every aspect of the brand’s design like alloy wheels and spoilers, and now complete cars, penned the C25. “If you distil the design concept to its most basic lines on paper, you start with three curves that symbolise the front and rear wheel arches and the roof,” he explained. “These lines are sloped forwards, giving the design a dynamic tension like a wild animal poised to leap.” From there, the design sketches went to a 1:1 clay model, where the details were worked out. The difference between designing a new car from scratch and working with an existing platform is the fact that with the latter as in this case, the powertrain and other elements are already fixed. Matthias took me to the workshop section where the fifth C25 was being assembled to show me just how much work is involved. All the factory body panels had been removed and in front, only the A-pillars and bulkhead remained. Joined to a bespoke integrated roll cage, which also forms the cant rails and C-pillars, this now became part of the new support structure for the carbon-fibre roof panels. The C25 is much wider than the SL thanks to its aggressively pumped out arches. The front arch mouldings bolt to the original fixing points, while the metal at the rear has to be cut out and the shell sealed and rust proofed before the new carbon-fibre panels are bonded on. It was strange to see the standard Mercedes steel doors sitting far inside the new front and rear wings. I noticed a locating hole had been drilled in each door and a rubber grommet installed. “These are the central locating holes to take a supporting strut bonded into the new carbon-fibre outer door skins,” Matthias explained. So here, because the new doors are so different in surface contours from the original, you end up with a new door skin bonded to the original, while new sills run along the car’s lower flanks to join the new front and rear arches. The new front bumper has an air splitter and massive new intakes to suck in air for the radiator, intercoolers and oil coolers while some is ducted to the massive brakes. At the rear, the new valance features a massive air diffuser that works hand-in-hand with the boot lid spoiler to reduce drag and lift over the rear axle. It also has four large angular exhaust outlets, symbolising the strength of the burnt gases expelled by the mighty V12 motor. Of the factory glass, only the front windscreen remains. All the other pieces are new, which is a very expensive undertaking, especially the large rear screen with its heating elements and radio antenna. The Perspex headlamp covers are bespoke items, but the light units behind them are standard SL. The LED taillights and their covers are unique to the C25. In wind tunnel testing, the greater width of the C25 increases the drag coefficient from 0.30 to 0.31. However, compared to the SL65 AMG, the C25 shows a lift reduction of 27kg and 33kg over the front and rear axles respectively, resulting in a zero lift condition at 200km/h.

DRIVE ON!

75

DRIVE ON!

76

DRIVE ON!

With this enhanced stability, and the power and torque to make full use of the car’s inherently long gearing, the C25 is able to reach 352km/h or 219mph, with 0-100km/h taking just 3.7 seconds along the way. Unless it has a self-contained frame chassis like the RollsRoyce Phantom Drophead Coupe, no open car is ever going to be as rigid as its Coupe counterpart, even if it is conceived as a roadster from day one. The coupe configuration with the built-in roll over cage probably adds around 20 percent to the SL’s torsional rigidity, and the slight body flex you feel in an SL when slowly traversing a ramp at an angle, even with the hardtop in place, is absent. This extra stiffness helps the handling, especially as the mechanical grip of the 265/30ZR20 and 325/25ZR20 rubber on 9.5J and 12.0J x 20-inch ultra-light forged wheels feeds massive loads into the structure when you use the car’s performance in the bends. For all its power, you have to remember that the C25 is no lightweight. Tipping the scales at 2,120kg, the basic SL65AMG weighs as much as an S-Class. Carbon-fibre body panels and removal of the heavy folding roof mechanism, shave off 160kg, or 7.5 percent, but 1,960kg is still 400kg more than a Porsche Turbo. Interestingly, the C25 is more nose-heavy than the SL65 AMG. The bulk of the redundant systems have been removed from the SL revolve around the folding roof and its operating mechanism, which were all located in the rear. Thus, while the SL65 AMG has a front/rear weight distribution of 1,081/1,039kg, the equivalent numbers for the C25 are 1,060/900 kg. A car of this performance needs brakes in the same league, and the C25 uses huge Brembo brakes with 405mm vented, cross-drilled discs in front with 380mm discs at the rear. Customers also have the choice of steel or ceramic discs. Carlsson did a roll out of the C25 at Hockenheim a few months ago, but this was really only a photo opportunity, and those who attended were only allowed to drive the precious prototype slowly around the perimeter road for car-to-car photos. Today however, I am on the unrestricted autobahn near Carlsson’s HQ in Merzig, with carte blanche to open the taps all the way, which I fully intend to do.

77

DRIVE ON!

Go to full throttle on the fly and you sense a pair of very big lungs inhaling deeply as the twin-turbos rapidly spool up. Then the big V12 exhales and hurls the C25 down the road on a relentless wave of torque that pushes you back into the well-padded seats. In the background, the deep baritone roar of the V12, its induction muffled by the mass of induction pipe work, provides the comforting soundtrack that eloquently describes awesome power wrapped in a blanket of silky refinement. Where the SL65 AMG has slight aerodynamic lift at high speed, the C25’s shape and aerodynamic aid were designed to create a modicum of down force. You notice the enhanced stability at speeds over 200km/h, and I get the C25 up to around 250km/h a couple of times before the early evening traffic makes it unsafe to go any faster. A long left hand sweeper taken at 200km/h requires only a gentle wrist movement to negotiate. At these speeds, the car is rock steady, and the ABC suspension keeps the body flat. Only the perceived lateral g-force makes you aware of the physics involved. Traction, or lack of it, is a problem that inflicts every highpowered two-wheel-drive car with this level of power. It is the reason that major league supercars like the Bugatti Veyron and Lamborghini Murciélago use four-wheel-drive. To help the C25’s fat rear tyres deliver the twin-turbo V12’s immense torque to the tarmac, and make handling more consistent on the limit, Carlsson fits a limited slip differential with a 30 percent locking action. Even so, it is easy to get the ESP light blinking at you like a Christmas tree when you leave the line in a hurry or apply too much throttle exiting a tight bend.

78

On the other hand, the C25 is not a car for throwing around tight, twisty roads. Its real forte is the autobahn, where its massive engine power, long gearing and relatively low drag coefficient give it seven league boots. Where it would be hard work to drive a Ferrari Italia or Lamborghini Gallardo 500kms in a day, the C25 shrugs off long journeys, and its occupants would arrive almost as fresh as when they left. The brilliant ABC suspension of the basic SL600 is made firmer and further improved dynamically by AMG for the SL65, and Carlsson saw no reason to fiddle with the settings mapped into its control unit. The only area where they apply their touch is in static ride height, which is dropped 30mm via the C-Tronic suspension module. Together with its wider rear haunches and wheel arch filling rubber, the lowered ride height gives the C25 a more purposeful ground-hugging stance. Even at rest, it looks like a wild animal poised to spring on its prey. When you consider that the SL65 AMG already costs over 200,000 euros with the right options, the C25’s 429,000 euro price tag does not seem that unreasonable especially as it takes around four months to hand build each car. “The surface finish will also affect the time it takes to deliver a car,” Matthias explained. “A normal painted finish is the fastest. But the second car we built, the Royale that was shown at Geneva, had its bonnet, roof and boot in natural carbon, which takes more time to finish perfectly.” Perfection, exclusivity and wow factor are all terms that apply to the Carlsson C25. If you want a car that turns heads wherever you go, the C25 is just the ticket. So long as no one has already put money down on the one allotted to your country, that is.

I

t’s back. The world’s oldest and most renowned tennis tournament returns to the All England Club in Wimbledon from June 20 until July 3 2011 where the very best tennis players on the planet will compete for the most coveted prizes. Here Society Marbella reveals all you need to know about what’s hot, who to watch and the favourites to win! Almost as famous for its strawberries and cream as it is for its tennis, Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament that is still played on the game’s original surface – grass, making it all the more exclusive, glamorous and prestigious. For the first time ever, the finals of the premier tennis championship will be filmed in 3D and screened live in High

80

All eyes will be on the main contenders as this year’s competition begins. No one can ignore Serbian NOVAK DJOKOVIC’s incredible success, having recently won 39 matches in a row; historically, a success of this calibre has not been achieved since Ivan Lendl won 25 matches in a row in 1986. However, Djokovic is still a few games away from beating JOHN MCENROE’s record of 42 straight match wins. With Djokovic on the form of his life, it is hard to recall that only a year ago the 23 year old found himself ousted from the opening round of Miami. However, Djokovic’s court speed and consistency have put him a notch above the rest this year, irrespective of his opponent he has managed to alter his game plan according to the situation. Djokovic has had a sensational start to the 2011 season and we don’t see his winning streak coming to an end when he takes to the grass. Reigning Wimbledon champion Spaniard RAFAEL NADAL, “The King of Clay”, will be fighting to retain his crown. Despite losing two clay court finals for the first time in a single season, he won’t be giving up without a fight. Nadal has

won at least five titles for six straight years and was the youngest player to win all four Grand Slam titles and the first player since 1969 to win three straight Grand Slam titles in the same year. Nadal is still a favourite to win, with 7/4 odds to take the Wimbledon championship again. He is a chameleon who has previously achieved way above people’s expectations. With his competitive stamina he is sure to be plotting his next assault. Although his results are declining as his 30th birthday approaches, don’t rule out ROGER FEDERER too easily; he is too talented to ever discount. Many people believe he has still got another Grand Slam title in him, and Wimbledon is his favourite tournament. Federer continues to depend on his experience and, as long as he still believes he can return to the top of the rankings, he could still conquer! Britain’s gleaming hope ANDY MURRAY is capable of beating all of the above contenders, but he still needs to prove himself by winning a Grand Slam tournament. He may have been on a slump since the Australian Open, but his recent matches have taken him closer than ever to beating the unstoppable Djokovic, which should give him the confidence he needs to go forward.

We all like a dark horse, and in this year’s men’s championships, Milos Raonic is the one to watch. He has gone from 303 to 26 in the world rankings in the past year. Despite only making it to the second round of the Australian Open he received rave reviews, with John McEnroe referring to him as “the real deal”, on Twitter. How he performs on grass will be difficult to say but he is an exciting prospect nonetheless! Men’s tennis has always taken the front seat but we can’t forget about the ladies. Defending champion SERENA WILLIAMS will be eager to resurrect her relationship with the grass and grab her fourth Wimbledon win. However, her presence is debatable following her withdrawal from the French Open, and, if she does manage to play, her form will be in question. If Serena doesn’t play it will open the door for other play-

ers, including her sister VENUS. World number one CAROLINE WOZNIACKI is a firm favourite, but her patchy record on grass could stand between her and victory. Also the Belgian comeback queen KIM CLIJSTERS is one to keep your eye on, as she could be on route to another Grand Slam title. Finally, Britain will behind its young talents: 17 year old LAURA ROBSON and British number three HEATHER WATSON, who attempts her second smash at the competition having being handed a wildcard in last year’s championship. Whoever comes out on top there is no doubt that Wimbledon will be full of upsets and excitements. Favourites falling at the first hurdle, unknown qualifiers triumphing against all odds, and the few British hopefuls playing their hearts out. One thing is certain, Wimbledon won’t disappoint.

Royal Ascot

14-18 June By Laura-Jane Bruce

There is no doubt that Royal Ascot is one of the major events in the British social calendar. For 300 years, racing, royalty and regard for the latest fashions have come together over this five-day event, which is visited by thousands and watched by millions. Here is SOCIETY MARBELLA’s definitive guide to the fashion forward event

What exactly is Royal Ascot?

Ascot Racecourse was founded in 1711 and is perhaps the most famous racecourse in the world. It was Queen Anne who created the racecourse at Ascot, but racing had taken place near the castle even before then at a course on Datchet Mead. The area at Ascot was open heathland and seemed to Queen Anne an ideal place for, “horses to gallop at full stretch”. The first race meeting was held at Ascot on Saturday, August 11, 1711 and the first prize was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas. Ascot racecourse now holds 25 race days each year. Almost 500 horses are expected to run this year, watched by close to 300,000 people at the racecourse during the week and millions more on television. 24 races are shown live on the BBC to nearly 200 countries. Each day follows the same format with The Royal Procession making its way from the Golden Gates, along the racecourse and into the Parade Ring from 2pm each afternoon. The first race of six each day is at 2.30pm and the last race is at 5.35pm, after which racegoers are invited to celebrate their winnings as they sing traditional songs, and a few new ones, around the bandstand.

82

300 years strong

This year, Royal Ascot will celebrate its tercentenary; 300 years of providing tradition, pageantry, fashion and style. Its heritage and royal connections will be celebrated and remembered at the racecourse, with a statue of Ascot’s greatest equine legend, Yeats, being unveiled. Yeats was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse who won seven Group One races and is the only horse ever to win the Ascot Gold Cup four times in succession. Also, one of the most visually compelling additions to the Royal Meeting will be the appearance of the “Queen Anne” Rose, honouring the racecourse’s founder. “Queen Anne” by David Austin, is one of five new rose varieties, which will be officially unveiled in May at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Fashion stakes

Over the years, the relationship between Royal Ascot and fashion has become interchangeable. Recently, press coverage of the attendees and what they are wearing often exceeds coverage of the actual racing. If you’re planning on visiting the event this year, be sure to follow the below guidelines and etiquette for your outfit.

Dress code for Royal Ascot

For women, only formal day dress with a hat or substantial fascinator is acceptable. Off the shoulder, halter neck, spaghetti straps and dresses with a strap of less than one inch and miniskirts are considered unsuitable. Midriffs must be covered and trouser suits must be full length and of matching material and colour. Gentlemen are required to wear either black or grey morning dress, including a waistcoat, with a top hat. A gentleman may remove his top hat within a restaurant, a private box, a private club or that facility’s terrace, balcony or garden. Hats may also be removed within any enclosed external seating area within the Royal Enclosure Garden. Children between the ages of 10-16 years inclusive are welcome to attend the Royal Enclosure on the Friday and Saturday of the Royal Meeting, providing they are accompanied by a Royal Enclosure badge-holder. Girls must wear a modest dress or skirt, boys a suit or jacket and smart trousers with a tie. Jeans and trainers are not permissible.

B

ravats. Just not quite the done thing these days. Too wedding-esque for Ascot.

C

D

ccentricity. So there’s a dress code, but that doesn’t stop Ascot being the perfect place to show off your own style and express your individual personality (within reason!).

E

eet. No pain, no gain! High heels look fabulous, but don’t neglect your feet girls! The site is a quarter of a mile long so lady visitors may wish to consider their footwear carefully, or just wear the heels and suffer for one day – you can give your toes some TLC later!

F

G

N

O

range Every girl’s worst nightmare is a streaky tan – a total fashion faux pas and there’s just no excuse with having weather like ours! Get out in the sun for an hour and make it natural.

P

aparazzi Royal Ascot is one of the “must attend” events for photographers from all over the world. Literally hundreds of snappers representing the papers and glossies descend on Ascot every June, and some even photograph the horses!

rban Myths. For the very last time! Rod Stewart was NOT ejected from the Royal Enclosure. He was looking for his hospitality area and a very kind, if admittedly slightly frightening Royal Enclosure steward, was snapped pointing him in the direction of his suite. A free gift for the paparazzi? Yes.

V

ehicular Egress! Take note ladies; the easiest way to exit a vehicle is to take a firm hold on the back hem of the skirt, twist your body with your legs together until your legs are toward the exiting door of the vehicle, and then stand.

W

X

Factor. If you get truly carried away with your partner’s immaculate appearance, the pink benches at Ascot are there for proposals!

Y

eats... the most stunning visitor to Royal Ascot was the winner of four Gold Cups from 2006 to 2009. Whatever you wore, however much you spent, this supreme athlete always stole the show on the ultimate catwalk – and he wore the same outfit every time!

Z

ips. Gentlemen, ensure these are always done up. A simple schoolboy error can spoil even the most distinguished of outfits!

Q

The ueen. A bet on the colour of the Queen’s hat on Gold Cup Day is available from any bookmaker worth his salt. Just be wary of believing all the post arrival hype about leaks from the Palace and betting coups being landed by insiders. It’s a novelty market and they never take more than pennies. The “we were hit for thousands” story is becoming a Royal Ascot tradition in itself!

R

ainy Days. Don’t get caught out in the unpredictable summer showers – a trusty umbrella can also double up as the ultimate fashion accessory to complement your outfit.

S

ummer Sun. Sun protection cream is a must – nobody can make sunburn look good!

T

oppers. Black or grey are equally acceptable but if you’re not going the silk route, grey is much safer.

Seve Ballesteros Seve Ballesteros, the legendary, five-time major winning golfer passed away last month at the age of 54 after losing his fight against cancer. This inspirational golfer, and ambassador for Spain, had a fantastic career spanning more than 20 years, and SOCIETY MARBELLA pays its respects

The legend that was... Severiano Ballesteros Sota, more famously known as Seve, was always influenced by golf. The youngest of five sons, all of the boys turned to golf as a career. Aged 16, Seve turned professional and burst onto the international scene with a second-place finish in The Open Championship in 1976 at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, UK. He went on to win the European Tour Order of Merit that year; a title that he would win six more times, including the next two years, which was a record at that time, but has since been surpassed by Colin Montgomerie. Seve won his first Open Championship in 1979 with a closing 70, a round in which he famously hit his tee shot into a car park on the 16th hole, yet still made a birdie. Seve went on to win five major championships: the Masters Tournament in 1980 and 1983, and The Open Championship in 1979, 1984 and 1988. His 1980 Masters win was the first by a European player, and at the time he was the youngest winner of the tournament, at age 23, though this record was broken by Tiger Woods in 1997, when he was 21 years old. His 1979 win at The Open Championship similarly made him the youngest winner of the tournament in the 20th century, and the first golfer from continental Europe to win a major since Frenchman

84

Arnaud Massy won The Open in 1907. So it’s plain to see that he was a very talented man.

Contribution to golf For much of the 1980s and 1990s, Seve was a mainstay of the European Ryder Cup team. He scored 22½ points in 37 matches against the United States; his partnership with fellow Spaniard José María Olazábal was the most successful in the history of the competition, with 11 wins and two halved matches out of 15 pairs matches. While Seve was a member of European sides that won the Ryder Cup in 1985, retained the Cup in 1987 and 1989, and regained the Cup in 1995, the pinnacle of his career in the competition came in 1997, when he captained the winning European side at Valderrama Golf Club here in Sotogrande, Spain. This was the first Ryder Cup ever held in continental Europe. He actually redesigned the 17th hole at the golf course before the Ryder Cup started that year. He also created the Seve Trophy; a biennial golf tournament between the UK and Continental Europe. Seve was one of the key instigators of the tournament. The team event is played over

three or four days, with two or three days of pairs matches and a concluding set of singles matches on the final day. It is fairly similar to the Ryder Cup, but the differences include the smaller size of the teams, which are 10 strong, whereas in the Ryder Cup they are twelve strong, and the fact that there is prize money involved. Seve was a charitable man, announcing the launch of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation in June 2009 after the devastating news of the evolvement of his brain tumour. After various operations and chemotherapy courses, his foundation was set up to help those with cancer. The foundation aims to research cancer, especially brain tumours, but it will also help financially challenged young golfers, so they can be as successful as him. Seve Ballesteros was a fantastic inspiration to many people young and old. It’s a tragedy that such an influential man was taken away from us when he had so much more to give to the world. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and close friends. Seve Ballesteros 9 April 1957 – 7 May 2011

OCEAN CLUB H

ere in Marbella, we are spoilt by many things: the weather, our location and the opulence of shops and boutiques. Our situation, right in the heart of the Mediterranean, ensures nothing but white sandy beaches and luscious blue sea. Not only that, we are fortunate to be home to one of Europe’s most spectacular beach side venues – Ocean Club. Set in the glorious surroundings of the fashionable Puerto Banús, the club offers an unprecedented level of luxury.

relaxation and sociability, with a choice of singular loungers or oversized circular beds to lie back on while you gaze over the pool or beach. Why not visit its on-site spa for the latest treatments and ultimate pampering experience or pop into its exclusive boutique to pick up the hottest fashions? The club has even launched its own official, limited edition Ocean Club CD; a mix of soulful house and chill out tracks. Pick it up from the club reception for a little slice of OC that you can take home with you.

The breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, the straits of Gibraltar and Morocco, transport you directly to paradise. Whether looking to relax by the sea or party by the extravagant saltwater swimming pool (one of the largest in Europe), Ocean Club really does have it all. The sophisticated 9000m2 space is truly the most impressive setting on the Costa del Sol. Ocean Club attracts only the most exclusive clientele. International stars from the world of sport, music and cinema, as well as Europe’s top personalities, are often spotted lounging around the pool or dining in the restaurant. Its outstanding quality is a magnet to the stars. There is an array of ways to spend a day at Ocean Club. The sun loungers offer

Ocean Club employs around 100 multinational service professionals, who are constantly on hand to tend to your every need. The restaurant in Ocean Club is not only a beach restaurant; it is also a gastronomic eatery, with many clients solely visiting the club for its culinary delights. The restaurant even boasts its own in-house sommelier, whose knowledge on wines and champagnes is truly outstanding. With 40 years of experience in the wine industry, the sommelier travels around the world in the winter sourcing the best and rarest wines he can find. dish perfectly and will delight your taste buds. The extensive list hosts wines from all over the world, including New Zealand, Australia, France and South Africa. We chose to spend our visit to Ocean Club dining in the exquisite restaurant; one of the focal points of the beach club. The Belgian Michelin star chef fuses creative gastronomic foods with classical French, Asian and Mediterranean delights. His philosophy is to locate the highest possible produce; so all the ingredients are sourced locally, except when the best can’t be found here, in which case it is flown in especially from Europe’s best providers. Even the sauces and breads are made completely fresh by the chefs. Ocean Club’s kitchens have high-end, custom-made facilities to ensure every dish is produced to the greatest standards for your culinary delight. The innovative menu is constantly updated with interesting and creative dishes, and we were lucky enough to sample one of the new dishes – open lobster lasagne “Kirsi”, with beetroot, shitake mushrooms, leeks and a truffle sauce. All the flavours of the dish blended together perfectly; it was absolutely divine and beautifully light. We also sampled beef carpaccio with truffle salad, rocket, parmesan shavings and a bluefin tuna tartare with sweet and sour marinated fennel, finely chopped herbs, orange and lime zest, finished off with a drizzle of avocado coulis. These light and delicate salads were perfectly arranged, as well as tangy, zingy and fresh. To finish off our light starter selection, the Ocean sushi mix sharing platter was served. To complement our sushi dish, the sommelier produced Shizen, a Japanese wine of Yamanashi, which married with the sushi dish completely.

kyo miso, courgette flowers and Mirin sake sauce. The cod can only be described as melt-in-the-mouth perfection and the mirin sake sauce was flavourful and beautifully tasty. Finally, the waiters produced a selection of desserts Ocean Club style: tiramisu, apple tart, white and black chocolate mousse, crème brulée and an assortment of ice creams, perfect for sharing. If all of that wasn’t filling enough, we dined on three more desserts! Pancakes “Mikado” with vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate sauce, chocolate fondant with crème anglaise and a choice of sorbets with fresh fruits served in a flower cookie. The excellent presentation and preparation ensured a delicious treat. To complement our huge array of desserts, ice cider from Canada was served. Ocean Club is actually the only stockist of this refreshing tipple in the whole of Spain, and it was an interesting alternative to the sweet wines that are normally served with dessert. This exquisite selection of homemade desserts completed the gastronomic experience flawlessly. There is so much more to experience at Ocean Club and many more dishes to discover on the creative menu, along with its Champagne spray parties and the infamous black and gold closing party in September. The venue’s high-profile reputation guarantees a fantastic experience each time you visit; and we plan to return again and again throughout the summer! EL OCEANO

T

he newly vamped El Oceano Beach Hotel and Restaurant really has it all; a stunning location right on the beach, breathtaking views over the Mediterranean and a dedicated and professional team waiting to tend to your every needs. A haven of laid-back serenity, this enchanted retreat is a hidden jewel in Miraflores. Set within 12,000 square metres of tropical gardens, it provides guests with an oasis of escape and relaxation. The hotel itself offers spacious luxurious rooms and suites, along with 15 southfacing, self-catering studios, located adjacent to the main hotel. The studios naturally benefit from the hotel’s facilities, whilst also providing the opportunity for some privacy. If you are looking to indulge in a little “me time”, El Oceano has its very own beauty centre; the Ocean Spa. This decadent boutique is equipped with qualified beauty therapists, hairdressers and nail technicians who are on hand to pamper you, along with an indoor heated pool, jacuzzi, swim-spa and a steam room… absolute bliss! Know anyone getting married? El Oceano is the perfect setting for a dreamy wedding, with unique and tailored packages, elegant reception areas and opulent ceremony spaces. Speak to any of the staff and they’ll tell you about all the fabulous celebrations they have held there.

94

If all that isn’t enough, El Oceano has three exclusive restaurants to choose from: The Ocean Room, the Water Front Terrace, and our choice, the Ocean Veranda, a glass enclosed dining room seemingly suspended over the ocean. We happened to stumble in on one of El Oceano’s Full Moon Gala Dinner Nights, where a table d’hote menu, along with the a la carte menu, was available to celebrate the only full moon of the month. The evening included a threecourse meal, plus top-class, live entertainment from resident pianist and vocalist Johnny Baker, all for an outstanding €35. Be sure not to miss the next gala dinner on Wednesday June 15.

We chose to mix and match dishes from both menus. We sampled two of the starters from the special full moon menu: a timbale of crab and avocado in a Marie Rose sauce and crispy Thai fish cakes served with mango chutney and spicy pickle garnish. Both dishes were a light start to the meal; the crab and avocado flavours marrying together perfectly. From the a la carte menu, we sampled hand dived scallops with black pudding. The kitchen prepares the freshest scallops and presents them in a different style every day. This was my first time to try black pudding and, after being skeptical at first, I was pleasantly surprised at how flavourful they were.

COSTA CUISINE

We stuck with the a la carte menu for our next selection of mains: the El Oceano Curry Club, an authentic Indian cuisine prepared traditionally in the charcoal tandoori oven. The curry dish changes every week; on our visit it was kadai chicken, noted for its spicy taste and use of capsicum, a descendant of the red pepper family. Next was a confit of suckling pig “Andalucían” style with country potatoes, which fell apart in the mouth and was stunningly delicious. The oven roasted crispy duck with Chinese noodles and teriyaki sauce was a nice light dish and was followed by Angus Sirloin steak served with mushrooms, grilled vine tomatoes, French fries and pepper sauce from the full moon menu. The sirloin was succulent and packed full of flavour. It was a refreshing delight that we were able to combine dishes from the two menus. Onto the desserts: crème brulee, chocolate mousse and fresh strawberries with orange jus and caramelised lemon custard. These fresh desserts were a welcome end to an amazing selection of delicious dishes. El Oceano is one of Marbella’s little treasures, and once you’ve experienced it, you won’t hesitate to go back. With affordable luxury like this right on our doorstep, we just can’t wait to see what it’ll be like throughout the summer. El Oceano Beach Hotel and Restaurant Tel. 952 587 550 oceanohotel.com

DON’T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA

Argentina. The restaurant’s core clientele return to Evita again and again to enjoy the experience and the food.

W

e get really excited when we find hidden gems such as Evita Restaurante in Nueva Andalucía. Open from 7pm, they specialise in serving a mix of Argentinean meats fused with international cuisine, all within typical Argentinean surroundings. All the meat served in the restaurant is sourced from Argentina. The reason for this? The large plains and the excellent quality of the pasture is the ideal climate for raising the perfect cattle and, therefore, the perfect meat. Argentina has always been known for its high-quality, tender and tasty produce. In keeping with Argentinean tradition, all of the meat in Evita is cooked on coals, making its taste, aroma and appeal all that more genuine. Adding to the atmosphere, there is live piano music every Monday and seductive Tango shows every Thursday and Sunday, with professionally trained dancers serenading you and transporting you right to the heart of

Since August 2008, Evita has been wowing diners with its fantastic cuisine and service. Argentinean owner Luciano has always worked in the restaurant business, and brings his wealth of knowledge here to Marbella. Previously working as a chef in his hometown, he moved here 10 years ago to open his own restaurant, firstly Tango in Puerto Banús, and now Evita. Nueva Andalucía is now such a rapidly growing, popular area, and with the abundance of parking, spacious terrace, and the outstanding view overlooking the 13th green at Royal Las Brisas, it is the perfect location for this authentic eatery. The chef Juan Ignacio Calomeni has a wealth of experience that is reflected in the dishes on the menu. Together with Luciano, the creative menu consists of combining typical Argentinean cuisine, with international, fish dishes and homemade pastas to suit all tastes. Previously working in some of the best restaurants on the Coast, Juan’s dishes are beautifully cooked and presented.

or Caesar salad (French fries was the winner for us). We also decided to try something different and went for lacquered chops in mint, rosemary and cous cous. The lamb and mint worked deliciously together and the cous cous was light and fresh. We dined on two desserts; profiteroles with ice cream and warm chocolate and pancakes with a caramel filling. After fighting over the gooey pancakes, we enjoyed the cream inside the profiteroles, which was so light and fluffy. We certainly left Evita with a smile. Whether you are planning to enjoy an intimate dinner for two in the interior dining room, or gaze over the views from their beautiful terrace, Evita Restaurante is one of those restaurants that leaves you planning your next visit as you walk out of the door. To begin: two delectable starters. Tempura prawns with two dipping sauces – teriyaki and sweet chilli, followed by a light green salad with warm goat’s cheese, apple slices and drizzled honey. The batter on the tempura prawns was the perfect consistency, not too oily and it lightly coated the juicy prawns. Next came the array of meats: sirloin, rib eye and fillet. All were cooked to order (we went for medium) and were absolutely divine. The succulent meats cut beautifully and were served with a choice of baked potato with cheese, French fries

She loves to create 3 dimensional cakes with any design of your choice, the more unique and extravagant the better. Omaya can design cakes in the style of your favourite handbag, pair of shoes, or make-up designer, bespoke cupcakes for a communion, or 3-tiered beautiful wedding cakes. RISING TENNIS STAR

Interview by Cameron Clark

11 year old Perla Nieuwboer is an aspiring tennis player living here in Marbella. We couldn’t feature an article on Wimbledon without mentioning this inspiring young girl who is about to embark on a fabulous future. What inspired you to be a tennis player? When I was four years old my mother, who was a top tennis player and trainer in Holland, often took me to the tennis courts with her. I was six years old when I played my first tennis match; it was then I knew I wanted to be a professional tennis player. Who are your favourite players? My big inspiration is Arantxa Rus, she is a Dutch tennis player ranked at number 98 in the world. I saw her twice at the tournament in Marbella two weeks ago. She has a great attitude on the court and she is a fighter. I also met her and talked to her because my mother knows her coach. I hope I can achieve the same as her!

Why do you like tennis? It’s so much fun. I love to play matches and travel to all the tournaments. How does it feel when you play a match? I am always a bit nervous before the match, of course I have a lot of emotions during the match, but I try to concentrate on what to do, play height and depth and try to find the weak points of my opponent. David Terol, my coach, is a great teacher. The greatest feeling of all is winning! Do you find it easy to play tennis or is it a competition for you? It’s easy because I love the competition! I know I have to work hard almost every day on my tennis and fitness but it’s all worth it. I get it all back when I play better every day and play matches and win! perlanieuwboer.com
