It’s seventh time lucky for Modern Family star Sofia Vergara as she tops the annual list of TV’s highest paid actresses compiled by Forbes Magazine yet again. We say lucky, but luck doesn’t really come into it; it’s been hard work, strength and overcoming of struggles for the Colombian star who has fought cancer, suffered family loss and worked hard to support her son as a single mother whilst carving out her impressive career.

orn on July 10, 1972 to a Roman Catholic family in Barranquilla, Colombia. Her mother, Margarita Vergara de Vergara, was a housewife and her father, Julio Enrique Vergara Robayo, a cattle farmer. Sofia Margarita Vergara Vergara attended a bilingual Spanish and English school in her home town before going on to study dentistry at college. However she was scouted in her final year and abandoned her studies before the last two semesters for a career in modelling. Alongside her modelling Sofia hosted an array on Columbian TV shows until 1998 when her brother was murdered during a botched kidnapping attempt. To escape the unrest in Colombia Sofia’s family moved to Miami, Florida where she hosted Spanish-language game show, ‘A que no te atreves’ (I Dare You) and began landing small roles in American films and TV shows.

The escapades of the non-traditional family struck a chord with viewers, and the series was an immediate popular and critical hit. The show won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in each of its first five years and Vergara was nominated for an Emmy Award four times for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy (2010–13). It has so far won a total of 22 Emmy awards from 75 nominations. It also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television

In 1990 at the young age of 18, Sofia married her high school sweetheart, Joe Gonzalez. The pair had a son, Manolo, when Sofia turned 20 but the couple sadly separated the following year, leaving Sofia to raise her son alone. In 2000 Sofia was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had to undergo surgery to have her thyroid glands removed. She made a full recovery through radioiodine therapy, but still needs to take medicines to prevent hypothyroidism.

The actress continued to pursue an acting career and landed one of the four principals in the romantic comedy Chasing Papi in 2003 but the acting jobs that followed were small roles that primarily capitalized on her looks. Supporting roles in crime drama Four Brothers and comedy Meet The Browns followed before Vergara took to Broadway in the revival of Chicago in 2009. That was the year things began to change as she joined the cast of Modern Family, as the much younger wife of a man with children near her own age. The American television mockumentary family sitcom premiered on US channel, ABC in September 2009. It follows the lives of Jay Pritchett, his second wife Gloria (played by Vergara), her son, Jay’s two adult children and their families who all live in suburban California. The series is

Vergara also proved that she was a savvy businesswoman as she capitalized on her pervading celebrity status to grow Latin World Entertainment, a talentmanagement firm that she cofounded in 1994, into one of the mostpowerful Hispanic media marketing companies in the world.

It wasn’t just Sofia’s professional life that hit the headlines, in 2010 she started dating producer and politician, Nick Loeb. The pair got engaged in July 2012, but the romance was short lived and they parted ways in May 2014. One year later a legal battle over the future of two frozen embryos that were produced by in vitro fertilization while they were together was splashed across the media. Nick fought to use the frozen embryos despite an agreement stipulating that nothing could be done with them without the consent of both parties. Vergara’s lawyer confirmed that she wanted them to remain ‘frozen indefinitely’ and in 2016 Loeb dropped the case. At the White House Correspondent’s Dinner in DC in July 2014 Sofia met ‘True Blood’ star Joe Manganiello, the duo had a whirlwind romance and got engaged just six months later. They married in Palm Beach, Florida on November 21st, 2015, the same year Sofia was awarded with the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Steering through a lot of hardships to achieve success, Sofia proved that hard work and perseverance pays off in the end, pulling in a whopping $42.5 million over the past year — nearly double the next highest-paid actress on Forbes’ list. Vergara’s riches come not only from her salary on the longrunning ABC comedy, but also from a slew of endorsements such as SharkNinja Coffee and Rooms to Go furniture and if the last year is anything to go by, we can’t see this starlet slowing down any time soon.

Described as a much darker, more reflective album than their previous releases, the new songs further hone the Inglorious sound of pulsating rhythms, driving guitars and infectious vocal melodies. “This album is different in many ways. The songs came about very quickly. As with all our songs we start with a riff, and this time having a new guitarist, Drew, added a new and heavier feel to a couple of songs. We wrote the basics mostly together all in one room on acoustic guitars and then I went away and crafted the stories I wanted to tell. For me this album is very personal. It’s a big year for the Backstreet Boys with their tenth studio album, ‘DNA’, released this month followed by the boys biggest arena tour in 18 years. Over a three month period, the band, who first started out 26 years ago, will be performing at venues in Europe and North America. The new tour comes following the end of Backstreet Boys’ residency in Las Vegas. Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life will come to an end on 27th April 2019. If you are a fan, the pop stars will be in Spain for one date only at Madrid’s Wizink Arena on May 13th 2019. Tickets are currently on sale via Ticketmaster.

Twenty four year old superstar, Meghan Trainor is back this month with her third studio album. Originally scheduled for an August 2018 release, Trainor pushed the launch back a whopping five months to include her new music on the album. Meghan announced last summer, “This past year has been one of the most exciting of my entire life. I got engaged to the love of my life, Daryl! I got to hang out with Diddy, DJ Khaled and Fergie on The Four, and I released five new songs that I’m absolutely obsessed with,” she said. “I’m in such an amazing place and I can’t stop writing songs… I’ve decided to move my new album TREAT MYSELF until I get everything out of my head and recorded in the studio. I’ve never been more excited for all of you to hear my new music. Thank you for your continued love and support. ”The album is now set to drop on January 25th, 2019.

Best known for their breakthrough hit, ‘Last Resort’, the suicideprevention anthem released back in 2000, Papa Roach, the California based rock band, release their new album, ‘Who Do You Trust?’ this month. Bassist Tobin Esperance revealed, “Our goal for our 10th album was to push ourselves further into genres that inspire us most. Star is Born has been one of this year’s biggest hits and it looks like it is set to receive the awards it deserves. The Screen Actors Guild nominations, also known as the SAG Awards, were announced this month, with both Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga recognized in their acting categories as well as the cast for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Other popular nominees include our December cover star, Emily Blunt for Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns and two of the stars of Mrs. Maisel, Alex Borstien and Rachel Brosnahan also achieved nominations in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. Fearne's out of Juice!

pparently 10 years of being mocked by Keith Lemon is enough for Fearne Cotton who has announced she will be leaving Celebrity Juice. After a decade as a panellist on the show alongside I’m a Celebrity & This Morning’s Holly Willoughby, Fearne revealed she will leave Celebrity Juice with “incredible memories” and “miss everyone in front of and behind the cameras.” Cotton announced her exit in a statement to The Sun, saying that it had been a joy to be part of a magnificent show. Fearne’s replacement is yet to be revealed but I’m a Celebrity’s latest runner up, Emily Atack and model Kelly Brook (who previously filled in for Fearne when she was on maternity leave) have had their names bouncing around.

ould it be time for the Queen of daytime TV, Ellen de Generes, to say goodbye to her namesake talk show?! The reigning queen recently revealed she is reluctant to sign a new contract to propel the tv show into its 20th series. “The talk show is me, but I’m also playing a character of a talk show host. There’s a tiny, tiny bit of difference,” she explained. While The Ellen Show isn’t going anywhere before 2020, Ellen has been consulting with loved ones, including her brother and fellow comic Vance DeGeneres and wife Portia De Rossi, on the decision whether to continue the TV hit. Her brother has encouraged her to look beyond the world of daytime TV. “I just think she’s such a brilliant actress and stand-up that it doesn’t have to be this talk show for her creativity. HEALTH SCARES FOR HYLAND

ou may know Modern Family star Sarah Hyland as bubbly, ditzy Haley Dunphy, but what you may not know is that the young beauty has suffered a lifetime of health struggles undergoing at least 16 surgeries. In an honest and public profile for SELF magazine, Hyland revealed she has undergone a second kidney transplant after her body began rejecting the kidney her father donated to her in 2012. The failing kidney left Hyland feeling “very depressed” and questioning her own self-worth. Thankfully, her younger brother, Ian Hyland, matched as a donor and agreed to share one of his kidneys with his sister. “When a family member gives you a second chance at life, and it fails, it almost feels like it’s your fault. It’s not. But it does,” she said. “For a long time, I was contemplating suicide, because I didn’t want to fail my little brother like I failed my dad,” she continued. “I had gone through (my whole life) of always being a burden, of always having to be looked after, having to be cared for.” Hyland received a kidney from her sibling in September 2017, just three days after meeting her current boyfriend Wells Adams. Both the actress and her brother remain healthy. With the support from her family and a new love, Hyland is optimistic about what lies ahead. “I’m stable. I’m thriving,” she said. “I’m super happy with life.”

We are all here striving along in our own little dimensions, going up and down different paths trying to decide who we are and where we want to be in life. This conscious effort to make the most of it drives us and keeps us sane in a world where we often can’t quite make sense of the gift we have been given. And then comes along the ultimate gift of parenting; just when we are developing and getting to grips with who we are, we have to now do our best to make all the right decisions on someone else’s dependent little behalf! For eighteen years. At least. It’s a big one. managed to deliver three healthy children one after the other (in less than three years I might add), and much of their infancy and toddler moments is now a blur as I was literally up to

my neck in new levels of intensity, but made the most of it, or rather made most of it up as I went along. I now have three wonderful humans to share my life with and I love them dearly. I love having kids. It is brilliant. But it is also seriously, seriously challenging to every stretch of the human capability; morally, physically, mentally, spiritually, and trying ultimately not to lose your banana-y. The bittersweet balance between unconditional love and relinquishing your independence is upon you for all eternity.

SO HOW ON EARTH DO YOU MANAGE THAT AND CONTINUE TO BE THE BEAUTIFUL CALM INDEPENDENT YOU ON A DAILY BASIS? It is new year, it is January, here is a compilation of my favourite go-to parenting tools when the proverbial is starting to hit the fan, when nerves are raw, when all you want to do is hide in the cupboard under the stairs, but you can’t because you live in a penthouse in Marbella and there are no stairs… Happy New Year to all parents, friends of parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, babysitters, people who can’t abide kids but find themselves confronted by some; take this list out of the magazine and place it carefully on your person at all times, just in case.

Safe word

A situation with any level of danger or complexity involved (from which you might need to escape) is often pre-

assigned a ‘safe word’ or code word: like if you’re into some risqué bedroom activity and the restrictions are getting a little too tight, or you are on the phone to your security system headquarters and they need to know you are ok. If you are not ok, you put your safe word into practice to initiate a rescue or release from said situation. Similarly(!), when parenting and you feel your blood start to boil, your temper is reaching equator type temperatures and pressure is building like a Pringle tub on an airplane. STOP (don’t pop), get your safe word out (please use a different one to any others you may have!). Shout it if you have to, but basically you need to find something that will replace your frustration and anger with a different mental image and feeling. Take my word, for example; Frangipani, an utterly ridiculous word if you ever heard one, but the smell of the flower is divine. Saying it to myself repeatedly (or occasionally mad-woman-in-the-streetstyle out loud) cuts the umbilical cord of parenting madness by interjecting a totally random thought which inspires, for me, a little humour, followed by memories of walking the streets in Sydney on a balmy afternoon and smelling that heady floral aroma. Basically it is a good old fashioned distraction technique, a change the chip mechanism to make you take a step back and prevent personal implosion or a rather embarrassing public overreaction to a child’s behaviour - you just look like you are a bit mad quite frankly, you can’t handle it and are struggling, (even to other parents who totally get it) while the child, well they are just being a child and come across totally normal. Find your safe word, keep it safe, and make sure it takes you to a happy place!

Deal wit h it

Now the safe word only gets you out of dodge momentarily, it is a distraction at best, and you still have the actual situation to deal with. However now you are hopefully somewhat calmer, at least diverted a little from your imminent explosion. So let’s move on to dealing with it. The best possible way to deal with a situation with a child, is to tap into their psyche. I don’t mean start acting as they do and have a small fit whilst screaming and flailing all limbs around simultaneously. I mean think how they are thinking; what is going through their tiny minds at this moment causing them to react this way? Step into their little shoes and realise their feelings and the cause of the fray. This may cause you, as

it does me, to glaze over for a while and imagine yourself reacting to an older sibling having yet again poked you in the eye for fun. The main thing is not to react on your own terms and try to realise and rationalise theirs. Find a way to appease them without just plying them with something they want to keep them quiet, that is just appeasing yourself and delivering gratification for ill behaviour; not going to work for anyone in the long run and hasn’t dealt with the situation. It is difficult to do but find a story (make one up) which contains a moral which relates to, and will rationally explain the situation and that it is going to be ok. Listen to both sides of the argument and be an ambassador of calm, rational, story telling - a modern day Aesop, delivering good messages to all children. At worst it placates the child and distracts them with a story. At best it gets across a positive message, shows them that there’s no need to scream and shout or fight, that there are other ways to deal with tricky situations.

Breat he

I have found that at some moments neither of the above can resolve a situation and you’re left exhausted having tried everything to comfort and soothe a distressed, unhappy child. One technique that old yogis would be proud of is to sit and just breathe. Take the child aside, away from anything that relates to the cause of the drama and find a quiet space, where not possible; close your eyes. Both of you need to sit and simply breathe. Close your eyes and slowly talk them through the process, maybe create a serene, dream environment to encourage tranquility and then begin a slow pattern of long breaths in and out. Once this has become an established practice they can use it as a tool individually. To just tell them to “use your breathing” is an amazing way for them to take control of and their feelings, temper, emotions and reactions; also acting as a reset button. Sometimes using adult methods of calming and relaxing can be really effective for children.

Use your words

I first heard this from my Brother-in-law and it caught my attention. One of his kids was worked up and the vocals were getting rather exaggerated in

the volume and pitch department, to the point where words were barely comprehendible. The result was that this escalated and actions started to speak even louder than words; aggression came out in physical form towards the younger sibling. The father stopped the situation with an abrupt word, you could see he commanded respect and authority was present, and asked the elder sibling to “use your words”. The words came out as screechy jumble at which his dad again asked him calmly to “use your words”. Eventually he slowed down enough to relay the situation and what was making him so irate. The father’s point being that no matter what someone does you may not use anything but words to solve it. And no one can understand your words if you’re losing it, so you’ve got to take a moment and let it out in a rational manner.

OWN IT

When dealing with a sticky situation where a child has done something they shouldn’t have and their wriggling back, forth sideways and anywhere else possible to avoid accepting what they have done; these two little words come in so handy. Own it. Tell the child to do this, use those words. In doing so you’re showing that you know what they did, we all do, especially the child themselves but you’re empowering them by allowing them to take control, to take ownership of the moment, to rise above and take it like a (small) man / woman. It becomes their bad, but they almost feel relieved and in a weird way proud to accept their fate. Often it results in them recognising their traits and coming to terms with their reactions and many times result in children finding it a lot easier to laugh at themselves. Punishment in turn is lessened due to the mature way they have managed the situation. It is so important for them to understand that it is human to make mistakes, they are a regular, normal occurrence and one which we just need to deal with on the spot to eradicate - don’t be embarrassed by it and let it fester and grow unnecessarily.

So there you have my two cents worth of new year (or any time really) solutions for parenting under duress…I hope you find these tools as useful as I have over the years; they have served me well over the past eleven! If that doesn’t work, do your best and always try to smile and laugh whenever possible.

n a recent trip back to see my dad, a typically tense and emotionally draining day was given respite by the mostly adorable antics of my nearly-3 year old boy. Keeping him up as long as I could before the wheels came off, I read him his nighttime stories and put him down in a makeshift bed. Secretly thanking him for making the visit bearable, I resisted the urge to just crash out myself and sloped back downstairs to find my old man pouring us each a Jack Daniels. We quickly fell into a familiar dynamic borne of nearly two decades of similarly tense and emotionally draining visits. Him moaning about everything under the sun (or lack of it – don't get him started on the fucking weather....), me glassy-eyed, barely needing to nod ascent let alone chime in, knowing fundamentally he'd never change but wondering couldn't he at least buy some better whiskey?? Don't get me wrong, there's definitely shit in the world that needs moaning about (welcome to my monthly column) but I don't think I've ever gone so far as to describe the RSPB as “a bunch of wankers”. They join an extremely long list of wankers in his book.... he's actually got a book too. It's called People, Organisations, Private and Public Companies, Places, Energy Suppliers, Technologies, Animals, Atmospheric Conditions and Everyone and Everything Else I Think Are Wankers.... Let's just say I don't think he sings in the shower and we've never really seen eye to eye.

A few years back, he sat opposite me and told me the doctor had said he was on the cusp of diabetes and should no longer indulge in his daily bowl of ice-cream. Hand on heart he said despondently "It's my only pleasure left in life"..... to his SON?!? He has another son too; an extremely successful, generous, thoughtful legend of a man... Not covered in hundreds and thousands though is he! Me and my brother are definitely more glass-is-half-full guys, where dad's is eternally half-empty, although since there's only JD to drink in his house, he might actually be winning there.

HYPOCRISY IS SOMETHING I'VE BECOME KEENLY AWARE OF RECENTLY SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE I HAVE A NEARLY-3 YEAR OLD. Anyway, at the risk of using my entire word count to catharti-cuss my father, I'll get to the point. Right after he called people who donate bone marrow to sick orphans wankers he moved onto tailgaters and I nearly spat my drink

out. If ever there was a serial tailgater it was him. Long before The Fast and the Furious made aggressive driving cool, my Mondeo-clad dad fancied himself The Quick and Curmudgeonly. Teenagers will always find a way to be embarrassed by their parents but fuck me did he make it easy as he terrorized the rear bumpers of startled pensioners, school-run mums and everyday commuters alike. I still remember a bloke getting out his van and thumping the driver-side window, while my dad mimed the whole “oooooh, I'm scared” sarcastic shivers. “Not getting out the car though are you dad?” I thought. Now here he was in another tirade, inadvertently calling himself a wanker and I honestly don't think he recognised the hypocrisy. He might as well have been wearing an RSPB tabard. Hypocrisy is something I've become keenly aware of recently specifically because I have a nearly-3 year old. When you spend large portions of the day reminding them to say please and thank you, not to stuff food into their mouths like they've just crawled out of a dessert, not to lob their toys or bite or scream in people's faces, you better be damn sure you're practising what you preach cos they are some observant, calculating little fuckers and they're just itching to copy your bad behaviour.

The truth is we're all guilty from time to time of a little ethical duplicity, but that's just social survival in a demanding world...

The whole wonderful process of parenting makes you reflect on those behaviours we often justify in ourselves but prefer not to see in others. And it's not just my dad doing it. A scientific study conducted a decade ago presented a large group of people with two tasks, one “tedious and time-consuming”, the other “easy and brief”. Candidates could choose to assign each task to either themselves or the next person, or allow a computer to randomly assign for them. Eighty-five percent of people chose to take the reigns, gave themselves the easy task and deemed it “fair”, yet almost exactly the same percentage thought it unjust when watching others do the same... Dickheads. Interestingly though, the researches threw a curveball, repeating the experiment whilst requiring the subjects simultaneously memorize a long series of numbers. By effectively hampering cognition, and placing candidates in a distracted, more instinctive state, researches provoked far more impartial results, whereby participants judged their transgressions in line with others. The implication is we are intuitively moral beings, but given time and incentive, we'll generally perform the necessary mental gymnastics to let ourselves off the hook for poor form, provided we don't stray too far from our predetermined moral code. When we do, rather than risk destroying our own perception of ourselves, we tend to create a little ethical wiggle room, totting up all our good behaviour against the bad or convincing ourselves it was minor or justifiable.... When we know we've really fucked up, we blame alcohol. Or, in the case of Newt Gingrich (not a Harry Potter character, but an extremely powerful US politician), who was cheating on his wife while impeaching Bill Clinton on charges of infidelity, we blame patriotism. Citing his serial adultery as a result of all the hard work he was doing for love of country, Gingrich's later campaign-trail assertions that he had since matured (he was 55 at the time of that particular affair so hardly youthful abandon) and found God's forgiveness (Don't drag Him into it!) worried those watching his presidential bid. If hard work for his country had led him to manipulate, lie and shag people other than his wife, was the top job really a good idea? John Lennon, a bloke who liked to lay about in bed banging on about

peace and love had a long history of dishing out domestic and emotional abuse. Ultimately he became a victim of violence himself in a country where large swathes of evangelical “Christians” regularly undermine Jesus' less bedbound message of love and compassion by waving around guns and placards saying things like “Faggots Burn in Hell”. Of course that's America though, so everything including the hypocrisy needs to be armed to the teeth and dialled up to 11. The biggest hypocrite stateside (or at least the one with the most followers) isn't chucking stones in a glass house so much as throwing tantrums in a White one, but his moral failings might be one of the few indicators he's actual human (his hair certainly isn't) The truth is we're all guilty from time to time of a little ethical duplicity, but that's just social survival in a demanding world, so it's important we keep perspective and direct our indignation where it's really deserved. In a time of such political

and social division, it's imperative we seek mutual understanding through accountability of our own failings before we seek to persecute others for theirs. Before reacting, we should try to genuinely assess whether moral transgressions are relatable, understandable and forgivable. We've probably all advocated honesty and integrity then smiled upon realising we've been undercharged on a round so does that make Bono a cunt for spending decades preaching about the plight of poor people while simultaneously avoiding paying MILLIONS in taxes which could have gone towards the provisions of education, welfare and health services??... For that, and a hundred other reasons, yes, yes it does.

Realistic Resolutions W

hile I understand that new beginnings are much needed and I welcome them in my life, the “New Year, New You” campaign doesn’t sit very well with me. For me, it’s about embracing the reality that I’m still going to be me this New Year and learning to love myself more. I want to make room for new opportunities, intimate relationships, and all the good things that come along, but I prefer realistic resolutions over a new me. I want to embrace myself, flaws and all, and take baby step resolutions, because that’s where lasting change comes from. This isn’t a definitive guide for the New Year, it’s my wellness bible for 2019. Aim for checking off the list each day, if you muck it up, try again another day. You won’t be perfect, life will get busy and this is where the realistic part comes in. These are realistic resolutions – I’m not asking too much of you and you shouldn’t either. Can you commit to giving each of these four resolutions a good shot?

INCORPORATE SUPERFOODS DAILY Can I make it any easier for you? Each day all you have to do is incorporate a superfood (and there is a pretty loose definition to the word, so you’re in luck):

Superfoods are rich in nutrients that are beneficial and necessary to your physical and mental wellbeing. I can go on forever with this list, but I’ve named a few of my top ones to get you started. Fresh raw green leafy vegetables contain high doses of chlorophyll, easily digestible proteins, enzymes and a wide range of vitamins and minerals. These particular vegetables act as mini-transfusions for the blood, a health tonic for the brain and immune system and a cleanser of the kidneys. Try any of the following: rocket, spinach, dandelion greens, kale, watercress, parsley, lettuce, endive, chicory, broccoli sprouts and mustard sprouts. Barley Juice Extract Powder has 11x more calcium than cows milk, 5x more iron than spinach and 7x more Vitamin C and bioflavonoids than orange juice and significant amounts of Vitamin B12.

Spirulina is one of the highest known protein sources on Earth and contains 70% complete protein, towering over steak which consists of only 25% protein once cooked. Get moving How much of your day is spent sitting on your tush? I know you’re working hard, your mind is going, but your body needs the same workout your brain is getting all day. Don’t deprive it of a little action. Here are my favorite ways to get going, take your cue from these and make it work for you • Take a Burn 60 class. These 45-60 minute workouts will have you moving all over the place and the trainers adjust your workout to your personal fitness level. Classes with pumping music and motivating females really get me going and make the “get moving” part of your resolution easy to commit to. • Dance Fit Studio. Shouldn’t even be allowed to be called a workout, because it’s so high energy and fun. Here, we call it our “Happy Hour” and trust me, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to leave your dance workout in a funk. Post dance workout, I’m more motivated to order the kale salad over the burger every single time. Wherever you are, find a dance studio and try one of there classes to mix up your exercise • Take a hike. There really are no words for what a walk in the wilderness does for me. A walk up Fryman Canyon (a little less scenery than Runyon) and my stress melts away, I feel grounded, and actually take a minute to absorb the beauty around me – something not so easy to do when running around in our day-to-day. • Don’t have time for any of the above….take a walk around your neighborhood, walk your dog, walk on your lunch break, walk while you’re waiting on your kid to wrap up practice, get up every hour at the office and do squats at your desk….just do something to move your body every single day.

TAKE YOUR “TIME-OUTS...” ...to Reflect, Meditate, Find Stillness This one should be number one. If I didn’t already get this far into it, I would move this around and put it right under eating your superfoods. I have found that 99% of my clients simply don’t take their timeouts. Funny, that I have to put successful, middle-age men and women in time out, but I do! You HAVE to take daily time outs. The world takes a lot out of you.

My favorite ways to take a time out: • Use my Calm.com app for a 5 or 10 minute meditation in the middle of a hectic day • Take a yoga class. Yoga is a mindful practice that helps me focus on my breathing and be in the moment. • Do a guided breathwork exercise, like this http://marc.ucla.edu/mindful-meditations • Take a 20 minute nap, admittedly, not the easiest thing to do during the workday, but when I can find time to put my feet up mid-afternoon and close my eyes for 20-30 minutes, I feel amazing. • Journaling and gratitude exercises, starting and ending your day with a gratitude exercise does wonders for mindfulness. Each day, I wake up and write out 5-10 things in my life I’m grateful for. Each night, I write out the things throughout the day that were high points or low points. This practice keeps me centered and mindful of my blessings, while allowing me to let go of the unnecessary and negatives.

Taking a time out: • Can speed up the recovery of disease and plays a large role in prevention of cancer and disease • Works to balance your feel good hormones (serotonin and dopamine) and helps prevent depression • Decreases risk of heart attack and stroke • Boosts memory and brain function • Lowers cortisol, which in turn lowers your cravings for sugar and simple carbs • Reduces flare ups of adult acne and other skin conditions • Promotes a healthy libido • Clears the mind, encourages positivity, and improves decision making skills

Take action OFTEN WE ARE CAUGHT IN A MENTAL TRAP OF SEEING ENORMOUSLY SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE AND THINKING THEY ARE WHERE THEY ARE BECAUSE THEY HAVE SOME SPECIAL GIFT. YET A CLOSER LOOK SHOWS THAT THE GREATEST GIFT THAT EXTRAORDINARILY SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE HAVE OVER THE AVERAGE PERSON IS THEIR ABILITY TO GET THEMSELVES TO TAKE ACTION. - Tony Robbins We cannot grow unless we act. What are you doing to take action in your life? • Sign up for a yoga studio or meditation class • Buy a journal and start journaling • Commit to my gratitude challenge • Sign up for a weekend wellness retreat • Volunteer in a community program that promotes health and mental well-being • Familiarize yourself with your local farmer’s market and purveyors • Take a plant-based cooking course or commit to Meatless Monday or Weekday Vegetarian

These sound easy, but it takes courage and commitment to act and add newness into your routine. This is when self-growth develops and self-love increases ten fold. Trust me, you’ll feel a lot better and be a lot more interesting to have a conversation with at a dinner party when you’ve tried cryotherapy, cupping, yoga, meditation, journaling, sweat lodging, and energy healing! I mean, can you imagine how these experiences will add to your life? There is a magical dynamic quality about action, have the courage to act on your ideas, for in so doing you will be well on your way to thriving in life.

CBD Could Boost Your Metabolism

So lets explain … Cannabinoids such as CBD work on the body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which has been said to be one of the most crucial physiological systems in the human body. The ECS organizes and mediates multiple important functions, including mood, sleep, and appetite. The two best-known cannabinoid receptors are CB1 and CB2, and it is now believed that the ECS is vital in preserving homeostasis, a generalized term used to describe keeping the body in balance.

There are two types of fat in our bodies: white adipose tissue and brown adipose tissue. While babies have brown fat, it usually disappears as they get older, our bodies are almost entirely comprised of white fat. (This is a shame, because brown fat helps you burn calories)!

A 2012 study published in Psychopharmacology tested the impact of three cannabinoids – CBD, CBN, and CBG – on the appetite of rats. The researchers found that only CBN increased the appetite of the rats, while CBG and CBD both decreased it.

CBD is capable of stimulating the appetite in people in need of nutrition (such as cancer patients on chemotherapy), while at the same time suppressing the appetite of those who need to lose weight. Why is this you may ask? Its because the active compound helps keep the body in balance.

A study published in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry back in 2016, showed that CBD played a major role in the ‘fat browning’ process. Brown fat is a specialized deposit of fat that can produce heat and increase energy expenditure. The study involved researching the effects of CBD on immature fat cells known as preadipocytes. Overall, they concluded that cannabidiol helps with: The stimulation of proteins and fat genes that encourage the oxidation and breakdown of fat. Increasing the activity level and number of mitochondria in the body’s cells, which helps burn more calories. Reducing the expression of proteins involved in the generation of fat cells (a process known as lipogenesis).

Other studies in Poland, Italy, Hungary, Canada and the UK have replicated these findings, leading some researchers to conclude that there is "a correlation between cannabis use and reduction in the BMI," said Dr. Sunil Aggarwal, a Washington-based physician and cannabis researcher. " So by introducing CBD and hemp derived food products into your daily routine you can assist with weight loss and certainly promote a healthier lifestyle. However, consuming CBD alone is not going to make a huge impact unless combined with other beneficial choices such as exercise and diet.

What's the Difference between CBD Isolate vs Full Spectrum CBD?

Understanding the Benefits of the Many Cannabinoids

When CBD is referred to as full spectrum or whole plant CBD, it means that the CBD contains all other cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant including CBN (Cannabinol), CBG (Cannabigerol), and THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin), to name a few of the 118. And yes, along with these cannabinoids, Full Spectrum CBD also contains trace amounts of THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), but in very low concentrations (up toÂ 0.2%), which is completely legal and does not have the psychoactive stimulation! CBD Isolate, on the other hand, is simply purified CBD that has been extracted from the cannabis plant and isolated from the other cannabinoids. So why is this important, and why would someone choose one over the other?

As shown in the chart above, each cannabinoid offers different benefits for a wide variety of ailments. Notably, CBD offers most of the benefits of each cannabinoid combined. While there is no debate that CBD offers the most benefits compared to any single cannabinoid, many wonder if CBD alone is more effective for treating ailments than all the cannabinoids combined.

So Which is More Effective? It was previously believed that CBD in its isolated form was more potent and concentrated than full spectrum CBD; however, in 2015, the theory was questioned by a study from the Lautenberg Center for General Tumor Immunology in Jerusalem. In the study, researchers administered full spectrum CBD and CBD isolate to two different groups of mice. When comparing the data of the two groups, the results proved that the group administered with full spectrum CBD were provided with higher levels of relief. Furthermore, the

study demonstrated that full spectrum CBD continued to provide relief as the dose increased, while CBD Isolate did not provide the same effect when there was an increase in dosage. While full spectrum CBD has ultimately proven to be more effective than CBD Isolate and can be used to effectively treat a wide variety of ailments, it does not discredit the effectiveness of CBD Isolate. For example, you may not necessarily need all of the components of Full Spectrum CBD, or you may not

legally be allowed to use even the trace amounts of THC due to work related issues. As researchers continue to study the cannabis plant, we will learn more and more about these amazing cannabinoids and what they can do for us. LEGISLATION ISSUES Currently in Spain there is a fundamental problem with the standards regarding cannabis processing. This is due to the fact that the laboratories have not been given AEMPS approval and unlike the UK, Denmark and Holland, France and Spain do not classify the cannabis plant as a food supplement and therefore it cannot be sold as one.

We were lucky enough to have been given permission to use one of my closest friend’s villa for a modelling shoot with Cammie Andrews. The shoot was a huge success and we have got some amazing shots to use in our up and coming advertising campaign. It has lead to an underlying problem for CBD and hemp producers in Spain which currently cannot be resolved. TLE therefore are having to bottle its hemp products in another location in Europe to abide with this current legislation. We need to put regulations in place to help hemp producers and their businesses so they can contribute to the sustainability of the environment and the economy. Due to theses grey areas unfortunately some brands have slipped under the radar … out of 14 CBD brands being sold on the market 12 did not even contain CBD. This has caused an uproar in the cannabis industry as people like ourselves are putting our names and brands on the line to promote cannabis as a trustworthy industry and cannot have selfish greedy companies out to make money tarnishing something we truly believe in.

t may have been 11 years since his arrival on the coast but it didn’t take Dr. Aslani long to make his mark in Marbella obtaining the highly coveted post of Head of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery at Quirón Hospitals in both Malaga and Marbella. This in itself is a significant achievement as he was the first non-Spanish Plastic Surgeon to be hired for the post. In addition, during this time he has successfully built his

clinic, Cirumed, into one of the world’s most recognizable names in its field. With the goal of offering cutting edge surgical and non-surgical treatments to a beauty savvy clientele, Dr. Aslani and his wife, Jeannine have worked hard to consolidate Cirumed’s reputation for specialist surgery. In every success story there is a shining star and in this clinic’s case it has to be body contouring – a procedure (or set of procedures) undertaken in one day, sometimes involving liposuction, fat transfer, breast augmentation and a Brazilian Butt Lift all in one. Dr. Aslani notes that “around 80 per cent of our patients come from abroad so we built our own surgical unit to cater fully to their needs.” Currently, the Clinic is working on expanding even further. Another popular offering at Cirumed is the ‘complete circuit’, which meets all the needs of patients travelling to Marbella for the body contouring experience. Jeannine has perfected the circuit for these patients, taking care of all their needs from large to small.” Performing such regular surgeries, Dr Aslani has built a strong reputation in the cosmetic medical world which has led to multiple requests to speak at conferences around the globe, including Russia and the USA, where he has performed operations before groups of surgeons. “The great thing about travel is that you meet a lot

of doctors who know you perform specific procedures frequently and they are keen on learning your techniques,” explained Dr. Aslani. The best hair colour for your skin tone should not be selected on a whim or as the result of following a trend, instead the focus should be on skin tone, colour theory and even science. This month Jonathan sheds a little light on the most common colouring pitfalls - the mistakes we don't even know we're making.

echnically speaking I have just nicked that name. Anyone who worked in the 80’s in the fashion industry will know what I am talking about. Colour Me Beautiful was a company that everybody's mum, sister, auntie or cousin worked for at some point. New recruits would be sent off on a three day training course and once completed they would return home a ‘colour analyst.’ Within days all the neighbours, friends, basically any acquaintance would be MADE to have a colour assessment to personally prescribe the said clients colouring type. Your Colour Me Beautiful consultant would spend hours upon hours holding up swatches of colour against your face to pinpoint your very best hues and determine which season you were, Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. At the end of the session you would be

given your own selection of swatches to take with you on any future shopping trips for clothes, makeup and even hair colour. The companies motto was ‘We can literally transform lives.’ I think that may be going a little far but believe it or not it did actually work and is still relevant to this very day. We all know the colours that suit us - bring out the colour of our eyes, or brighten our skin. BUT, sometimes we just THINK we do! You can easily get stuck in a rut with your colours, especially when it comes to your hair. As a hairdresser, I pick up clues from your head or you face which help me gauge what hues would look best on you. A client may come in and tell me they hate their plain mousy brown, yet to me it is anything but. I can see threads of different hues running

through it, such as copper. This helps point me in the direction we could go with colour if we wanted to. How many times have you had your colour done and found you’ve had to plaster on the makeup to stop you looking like an extra from the walking dead? This is when a mistake has been made in the consultation with your hair stylist or you need to get a new hairdresser, as they should have steered you away from any colours which drain you. If something drags you down, then the colour is wearing you. It should be the other way around. A classic example is the yellow blonde, which no amount of toners or silver shampoos are going to shift. The only way to tone down those brassy hues is to go darker, and you know what? I promise you will be pleasantly surprised

at just how much more alive you look by going darker. To all you wannabe Kim Kardashians, there is a reason why we can’t get your black base up to that in vogue platinum blonde. It’s because it won’t suit you. When changing your hair colour, please bear in mind that it has to suit your skin tone or it will drain you and make you look like a crack whore. Now on the subject of silver, on the right skin tones it can look fabulous. However, on the wrong ones, it will simply wash you out and make you look quite sad. Just because it’s all over Instagram, it doesn't mean it’s going to suit you. This mantra will get you a lot further in life, ‘looks fab on her, looks a cow on me.’

If you get it right you can apply the power of colour to clothes as well as hair. You with me? If someone has a warm skin tone like me, they shouldn’t wear black, (yes the Reflections uniform does me no favours at TO ALL YOU all.) My test WANNABE KIM is, can you KARDASHIANS, wear black or should THERE IS A you wear REASON WHY chocolate WE CAN’T GET brown? If I think brown on YOUR BLACK a client then I know where BASE UP TO to go with their THAT IN VOGUE hair colour.

PLATINUM BLONDE. IT’S BECAUSE IT WON’T SUIT YOU.

As I have been doing this since God was a boy, I now get a feeling about clients and their colours. A client will sit down for a consultation and I will think, nah too cold. It’s also important to be able to see the depth, as it might be the right depth but simply the wrong tone for the client. This comes from 100 years of slogging in a salon and not something that can be taught overnight. Now I couldn't finish this article without talking about Britain's current golden

girl Ms. Holly Willoughby. I do absolutely adore her, but would someone please please PLEASE pass her team our salons contact details, as someone needs to get their hands on that sunflower blonde, like yesterday. Looking at Holly on my screen every night in the jungle, I was reminded of a friends reply when discussing the best way to correct a mutual friends hair tone. Her reply... put a hat on it. Don’t get me wrong I love Holly, I love her style and I used to love her hair. What she currently has is a classic example of a totally incorrect blonde for that particular skin tone. Check back to when she used to have highlights, bleach and tint, a combo which was much softer and flattering on her cool skin tone. My guess is that some wise guy got fed up with putting a zillion foils on her head and stuck on a tint instead. MISTAKE! To remove Holly’s brassy tones and lighten the hair it needs bleach, but this requires a lot more time and patience and a hell of a lot more foil. It seems I am constantly being reminded that there seems to be a general aversion to using foil in this industry nowadays. If it’s Holly that is struggling with time and not the hair stylist, (a full head of highlights takes at least 90 mins,) then she really needs to have a rethink because love, your current full head tint does nothing for you.

Hi Jimmy, thanks for taking the time to speak with us today, I want to talk about your current business, 3SA Estate, but before we do, can you tell me a little bit about yourself? Thank you. Sure. I´m 34 years old and come from the media business in Sweden, where I´ve been working in TV my whole life. You say working in TV. Are you in front of the camera? No, nowadays I’m only in front of the camera with the “Broker TV Movies Marbella” maybe you've seen them on YouTube? During all my years working in Sweden I was behind the camera, responsible for big companies marketing campaigns such as H&M, Volvo, IKEA etc. as well as lots of start-ups. Where were you born? In a town just outside Stockholm City. How did you end up in Marbella? I was here on holiday for the first time when I was 4 years old and I told my dad that I wanted to live in Marbella when I “got old”. So I decided early. I was working in real estate on the side in Sweden and after some good business there I bought my first apartment in Marbella as a holiday home.

What is your favourite thing about living in Marbella? It's the opportunity you have to be at really nice beaches the same day as you are skiing in Sierra Nevada. You can eat a lot of good food for a

reasonable price, and you have the sun and the temperature all year around. Do you have any hidden gems you could recommend to our readers? The area of “Istan” for sure. It is like walking into the fairytale “The Land Before Time”, if you remember that one. What is your favourite restaurant? I have many, but if I have to choose only one I would say El Ancla in San Pedro. What would you say to someone looking to move to the coast? Do it ASAP and start enjoy life for real. IN PORSCHE 911 SPEAK, THE GTS LABEL DEFINES A VARIANT THAT WALKS THE FINE LINE BETWEEN THE EVERYDAY USEABLE COMFORT OF THE CARRERA S, AND THE MUCH HARDER EDGE OF ITS TRACK BIASED GT3 AND RS COUNTERPARTS.

n the case of the Panamera however, the GTS moniker is applied to a more focused variant that holds the middle ground between the 4S and the autobahn storming Turbo. The extra 20hp and 15Nm that the original GTS made over the 4S came from tweaks to its air intake, camshafts, and exhaust system

This means a black background to the headlight lenses, black rear light reflector strip between blacked out taillights, and a black lower valance insert. The 20-inch alloy wheels are also painted black, although alternatives such as black wheels with a polished outer rim, as well as silver wheels are available too.

The original GTS was the best driversâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; car in the Panamera range, and we were eager to find out if Porsche had been able to work the same magic on their latest model. Importantly for those who need a bit more load carrying capability, there is also a GTS version of the Sport Turismo.

The dashboard with its big 12.3-inch infotainment touch screen is not just modern but also downright good looking with intuitive control buttons on the centre console. Small details matter in a car of this class and we like the fact that the volume control for the audio system is a practical knurled roller knob rather than one of those silly digital controls that is so hard to work accurately on the move.

So how do you tell a Panamera GTS from its siblings? As with the Carrera, Boxster and Cayman GTS variants the black visual accents from the Sport Design package are the order of the day.

The GTS look consists of black leather seats with Alcantara centres, Alcantara headlining, and Alcantara

steering wheel rim. A good option to tick the box for is red seatbelts, red stitching for the seats, centre console and dashboard, as well as red GTS lettering in the headrests as this delivers a splash of colour to the otherwise monochromatic trim. The carbon-fibre package provides inserts for the doors, centre-console, and doorsill panel inserts, and adds further perceived value to this high quality cabin. A new feature introduced for the first time on a Panamera and available as an option on all models is the Head-Up Display (HUD). This allows you to have up to six functions projected onto an area perceived as being 2.3 metres in front of the driver on the road ahead. The deep growl of a bent crank V8 has been a Panamera GTS hallmark from day one and nothing has changed in this respect. But recent emissions and

fuel economy demands have resulted in downsizing, and the Panamera 4S is now powered by a twin-turbo V6. Because V8 power is such a vital part of the GTS hallmark Porsche had to come up with an alternative. The solution was to install a detuned version of the 4.0 litre engine from the Turbo. The engine hardware right down to the turbochargers between the cylinder heads is identical, with the wick turned down via ECU mapping. The reduction in boost pressure from 1.5 bar to just 0.8 bar gives the GTS motor a significant amount of headroom, and the engineers use some of this to ensure the car is able to maintain its full performance irrespective of altitude. This means that every single one of the 460 horses will be present and accounted for when you are charging Alpine passes in summer. It also means that the Turbo cooling system is over specified for the GTS engine output, so race track stints or flat out autobahn driving in high ambient temperatures will never be an issue. The new big numbers are 460hp from 6,000-6,500rpm, with a healthy 457 lb ft (620Nm) of torque between 1,800

and 4,500rpm. With traction off the line helped by the all-wheel-drive system 100km/h comes up in 4.1 sec, with 160km/h passed in 9.6 sec, and 200km/h in 15.4 sec. Top speed is 292km/h. As with the other engine variants in the current Panamera range there is also a GTS Sport Turismo, so you can have a spacious load carrier with no compromise in driving enjoyment. Tipping the scales at 1,995kg the 30kg heavier and marginally less slippery GTS Sport Turismo (saloon Cd 0.31, ST 0.33) has an identical 0-100km/h time, but takes 0.1 and 0.2 sec longer to get to 160km/h and 200km/h respectively, and is 3.0km/h down in top speed. The new Panamera 4S, GTS and Turbo all use the same ZF eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, with the clutch sized according to power and torque. In line with the power and torque it has to handle the GTS clutch occupies the middle ground, with the 550hp Turbo spec motor mated to the beefiest clutch, and the smallest unit absorbing the output of the 3.0 litre bi-turbo V6. The clutch will thus be the Achilles Heel for aftermarket tuners who want to uprate the GTS motor to Turbo output levels or more.

To sharpen up handling in line with the GTS philosophy of sporting comfort the three-chamber air suspension and anti-roll bars receive recalibrated settings aimed at improving driver engagement without unduly compromising ride quality. The core of this bespoke GTS set-up sees the Normal ride height reduced by 10mm compared to the Turbo. Importantly the bump stops are shortened by the same amount so that wheel travel is not compromised. For ground clearance reasons the minimum safe dynamic ride height in Sport+ mode is unchanged over the Turbo. To put this in perspective, while the ride height of the Turbo drops by 28mm and 20mm front and rear respectively when Sport+ is engaged, since the GTS starts off 10mm lower in Normal mode, it only goes down 18mm in front and 10mm at the rear when Sport+ is engaged. Beyond these hardware upgrades the other changes are electronic control applications. For instance the standard fit PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) is set up to offer greater damper force resistance at any given point in its curve. in the overall ride characteristics, this philosophy achieves comfort through improved body control. As on other Panamera models active rear steering is an option and noticeably helps this big, heavy car rotate into slow bends with a greater feeling of agility, while aiding stability at high speed. Beyond the lower ride height and more sporting damper characteristics the handling balance of the GTS has been fine-tuned using uprated anti-roll bars and a remapped PTM application. As with the Turbo the anti-roll bars are hollow to save weight. The GTS specific front bar is increased in diameter from 21.5mm to 24.0mm, with no change to its internal diameter. The revised rear bar maintains the 26.5mm outer diameter of the Turbo bar, pairing this with a smaller internal diameter to increase its gauge and hence stiffness. The aim of these anti-roll bar changes is to reduce understeer and improve turn-in.

Importantly, the suspension of all Porsche cars is set up so that in maximum effort cornering the bump stops of both front and rear axles are reached at the same time as calculated by wheel travel. This arrangement avoids handling issues caused by one axle hitting the bump stops before the other, and ensures that the car has a linear characteristic velocity for user friendly limit handling.

Our comprehensive test route to the Bahrain International Circuit took in town and highway driving where the Normal suspension setting displayed a high level of ride comfort despite the big 9.5J and 11.0J x 20-inch wheels shod with 275/40ZR20 and 315/35ZR20 Michelins. While 21-inch wheels are a factory option the 20s look big enough and are less vulnerable to road imperfections.

With less torque being fed to each wheel by the detuned V8 motor the PTM mapping has been recalibrated to send a bit more power to the rear in Sport and Sport+ modes. This greater rearward power bias makes the GTS feel even more sporting.

The calibration of the three-chamber air suspension has been carried out to perfection to produce a supple secondary ride with good low speed bump absorption. The tightened up damping curve means that Normal is now a good all-round setting for road use below the level where we would select Sport for aggressively attacking a twisty road.

While the lower ride height and centre of gravity reduce the roll angle, as well as linear and diagonal weight transfer, improve aerodynamic stability and reduce drag. The GTS also inherits the larger active three-piece rear wing from the Turbo to counter lift over the rear axle at speed.

Taking a big, heavy saloon around a racetrack definitely falls into one of those fish out of the water scenarios, but the Panamera GTS took to the very technical F1 corners of the Bahrain International Circuit very well.

This 5.4 km long track with nine right and six left corners is the second fixture of each Formula One season. Amongst these 15 corners are two very technical slow bends that are tough in an F1 car whose huge aerodynamic downforce is out of the equation at these low speeds. They are also tough on a big, heavy road car that tips the scales at three times the weight of an F1 racecar. In both cases you need to be smooth with steering inputs, accurate with your lines, and restrained with the throttle. As you approach the final turn-in point under trail braking your speed needs to be right down before you steer into the tight left hander, still gently trail braking to keep some weight on the front tyres and help rotate the tail. Carrying too much speed into this tight 90-degree left-hander will result in understeer, and if you miss the apex here you will run wide and screw up your exit line, which in turn will affect your terminal speed at the end of the subsequent straight. With Sport+ duly engaged, the slow Turn 1 going into Turn 2 sequence is the trickiest and most technical part of this track for a road car with little or no downforce. Keeping your speed in check and not being greedy with the throttle is the secret here, and you have to make full use of

the Panameraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s precision and 4WD traction before unleashing all the horses towards Turn 3. The rest of the track is fast and flowing and you can get a good rhythm going, being patient in the two long medium speed bends where you have to hold the car on the edge with constant throttle to avoid understeer or oversteer. The other tricky section is the approach to Turn 10, the second slow bend where you have to brake hard, initially in a straight line away from this slow, distorted U-shaped left-hander, and then curving to the left. As you approach the final turn-in point under trailing braking, just before you downshift to second and turn into the tight left hander, your speed right down and still trail braking to rotate the tail. Carrying too much speed into this tight 90-degree left-hander will result in understeer, and if you miss the apex here you will run wide and screw up your exit line, which in turn will affect your terminal speed at the end of the subsequent straight. What was most apparent on track is just how agile and responsive the Panamera GTS is in an environment where luxury saloons are normally way

out of their depth. If anything, the long straights of this Hermann Tilke designed Formula 1 fixture showed up its relative lack of power to gobble up the long straights. That said while power is something the Turbo and especially the Turbo S E-Hybrid make up for, they are less able to deploy it on track thanks to their more comfort oriented chassis settings. Just for the record, my lap time in the Panamera GTS was 2:35 minutes. Compare that to the 1:27.96 minute lap posted by Sebastian Vettel in his Ferrari SF71H and you can see the huge difference between a fast sports saloon and a current 900hp+ F1 racecar weighing about a third as much, with massive downforce and slick tyres! With a growling V8 soundtrack, sporting chassis, and distinctive GTS design elements the new Panamera GTS is a true spiritual successor to the original. Offering a Sport Turismo version only adds to its versatility and appeal, and the new GTS should further increase the 15% of Panamera sales earned by its engaging predecessor.

An Apple A day..

have always loved cooking. I can still remember my first children's cookbook and my many first failed attempts at making pancakes at the tender age of seven. I grew up in Sweden from the age of eleven and spent many summers by my Norwegian grandmothers side. She was a feisty, energetic lady full of life and wisdom. An absolutely brilliant gardener with tons of berries and garden produce to pick from and an incredible cook. I remember one particular summer where we had copious amounts of apples in our garden. My grandmother, being who she is, was adamant that we make something of our generous harvest. A world war two survivor preserving and pickling had etched itself into her backbone of how to make the most out of food. That year we made apple compote, jam, cordial and even apple cider vinegar. We jarred, pickled and strained our way through our bountiful harvest. My grandmother's approach

to food has had a huge impact on the way I view food today and is almost the backbone of my approach to cooking and using ingredients. I always try and source as locally as possible. If there is anything edible close by I am always up for foraging and discovering what grows around me. I am also an avid believer of using every part of an ingredient, be that an apple or anything that enters my kitchen doors. As many now know, Scandinavians have a longstanding tradition with home pickling pretty much everything. That tradition, and love, is something that I have carried with me into my own cooking journey. This is where my love affair with apple cider vinegar comes in. I love using it for various recipes. The sweet yet acidic taste can enhance a dressing, cut through a heavy flavour and works wonders in gluten free and vegan baking. Apple cider is made from apple juice and water. The filtering process removes the “mother” and any sediment leaving it clear. So the only

difference between filtered and unfilteredÂ is one being clear and the other one not. I have to be honest I love using both. My criteria is buying a product that is as local as possible and fermented in a natural process. The humble apple cider will be forever connected to my Scandinavian childhood and etched in my memories. Perhaps that is one of the reasons I cherish it so much and incorporate it into my cooking.

Healthy eating is something that is thankfully becoming a mainstream necessity and it is paramount that children are educated on nutrition. It is still, however, somewhat of an issue that children are becoming obese and are uninformed, even unconcerned, about how to eat well, exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle. When the children are in school the decision of what they eat is ultimately out of the hands of the parents and so it is a definite disappointment when you hear them complain that the food is not good or there were zero vegetables

Well, perhaps that isn't such a pipe dream, here in the Malaga area, now that a local business has branched out into catering for schools… Sana Catering Marbella have been running a successful private catering business here on the Costa Del Sol for the past ten years. Director, Toni Foran - mother of two, felt that the local schools could benefit from their experience in catering for large parties, providing healthy, nutritious and locally sourced food.

Seeing that urgency towards this was lacking in schools in the area they set about creating ‘Sana Catering - Schools’ dedicated to offering a varied daily menu to suit all, including a daily vegetarian option and salad bar as standard. They hope to raise the bar in school dinners and steer away from children being fed heavy, fried foods and more towards fruits, vegetables and assisting in them achieving the necessary vitamins and minerals required per day. Their passion for food, extensive network of suppliers and existing infrastructure was already in place enabling the operation to begin immediately with Svenska Skolan (Swedish School), Marbella who employed them as their in-house catering service last year. This was such a success that this September Aloha College followed suit and the children, and parents, are comforted in the knowledge that they are receiving a heathy, balanced, tasty meal each day. “We believe that nutritional intake is vital for children to be functional in their learning at an optimal level. We also understand that healthy eating patterns built during childhood serve as a foundation for life.” says Executive Chef, David Farber, “we also know that it is difficult to find food to suit all kids’ tastes, so we aim to please”. Another important factor of the Sana Catering ethos is that they have

Knowing how to cook from scratch empowers people to appreciate the value of food, to understand what they are putting in their bodies and, therefore,

We hope to invite classes of children to the main kitchen at the school or our central kitchen where they could work with our chefs to see first hand the process from start to finish. How food is made from natural ingredients, the process of preparing and cooking food, to the finished plate. We believe it would be beneficial for them to learn about this process in a fun and innovative way”, says David. They have also proposed ideas to the schools such as ‘International Day’ whereby the children and teachers decorate the food hall and wear themed dress inspired by different countries. ith Winter weather comes the need for winter cuisine, and nothing says warm and comforting like succulent, aged steaks. From the team behind Magna Café and El Gran Gatsby, Vovem, on Marbella’s Paseo Maritimo is renowned as one of the finest steakhouses in Marbella. However, don’t be fooled, it’s not only for meat lovers, as they also offer a large selection of fresh fish including Grilled Cod Pil Pil Style, Fresh Lobster with French Fries and Catalonian Seafood and Fish Stew. We have previously dined at the sister eatery in Nueva Andalucía so were excited to try the newest Vovem location beautifully enhanced by wonderful sea views and a bustling location on Marbella’s promenade. Their menu has recently been updated with a whole host of new dishes. We started our gastronomic journey with one of the latest arrivals; Quails Egg cooked at a low-temperature with Celeriac Puree and "Salpicon”, a harmonious medley of flavours that truly exceeded our expectations. We followed this with one of Vovem’s most popular starters (and one of the chef’s suggestions); Avocado Cannelloni stuffed with Seafood and quickly realised why it is such a popular choice. However, our last option took home first place. The Wagyu Beef Carpaccio

with Salty Vanilla Ice Cream, Olive Oil Caviar and Parmesan Cheese was as decadent as it sounds; what felt like a starter, main course and dessert all rolled together blissfully into one, divine mouthful. Moving onto our main courses; one from the land and one from the sea. Commencing with the latter, the Grilled Loin of Tuna – so fresh we wondered if the chefs had caught it themselves! The fish was cooked to perfection and accompanied by some simple but delicious sautéed mushrooms. Moving onto the land (although it didn’t last long,) we devoured the 60 days aged Premium Simmental Ribeye Steak. Vovem prides itself on ensuring all their beef is professionally cooked with care and respect, flavoured with the aroma of the oak embers. Plus they boast the appropriate refrigeration facilities for all their meat so it can be properly matured, guaranteeing it is always prepared at its finest moment. Well what can we say about this; if Carlsberg made steak. Enough said. We rounded things off with the Creamy Chocolate Brownie with Mascarpone Cheese, `Pistachio and Crunch Coffee Pieces and the Brazilian Voyage; Caipirinha with Lemon Mousse, Sorbet and Vanilla Jelly. anuary is a cringe month for many people. At best, the photos everyone was taking cruelly show you at your worst rather than the way you remember looking when you left home to have a good time.

Memories linger in January, of the party over the holidays where you told someone what you really thought of them in words you can’t soften or take back; the roadside pullover by police who discovered your mate had indeed had more than the legal limit; the boor who groped half the women and the woman with the neighing whiney voice who told you the same story three times. January is a good month to take time to reflect on how we drink and what role we’d like to have alcohol play in our lives, because these are things that change. We get older, we want to do more sports, we and our friends and family move on so that comfortable routines shift, we’re suddenly more aware of our health or we simply want to live a healthier lifestyle.

Recently, I celebrated the wedding anniversary of a couple with a group of their friends and, when I sent a message of thanks the next day I received a sad note back. “I was so ashamed at how much wine we drank…” said the woman, who had recently given her husband a copy of my wine book because wine is his hot new interest. He was carried away ordering expensive wines, and more bottles than we really needed. As anniversary presents go, this maybe wasn’t a winner. Her message gave me pause. Ashamed? It’s a powerful word. It sums up perfectly what we feel when alcohol gets in the way: instead of being a source of shared pleasure, it’s suddenly the demon culprit for things gone wrong. Let’s do better in 2019. Here are a few tips or starting points. Don’t promise to drink only celery juice in future. Just make a date with yourself to think about your drinking.

Any potential benefits of alcohol are relatively small and may not apply to

Ask yourself how much you drink Ask yourself how much you drink and how often. Be honest. There are at least three good reasons to drink moderately: to avoid making a fool of yourself, stay in good health, and be in a position to actually enjoy your drink. A good way to get a clearer picture is to drink no alcohol for at least two days a week for two weeks, then track exactly what you drink for the other five. Plan ahead and don’t allow yourself any excuses.

Sports are not designed to purge your head and body of excess, so forget the self-punishment routine of sweating it out. Forget about pumping your system with caffeine. There is little evidence either of these works. Opt for water, water and more water, and a day or two off alcohol, plus 10 minutes of asking yourself how to avoid a hangover in the first place.

Take control of the amount you consume Make daytime drinking a rare exception. It’s just too, too easy to have that day stretch to evening and later. Decide how much you’re going to drink in an evening, in advance of a party, a dinner, or just even sitting around at home. Keep track and stick to your goal. The UK’s most recent guidelines are considered extreme by continental Europeans, but then the UK has a major problem with heavy drinking. When you’re out, don’t let waiters or friends refill your glass if there is still wine in it; put your hand over the glass when they come around and signal when you’re ready for more. Driving? Don’t drink alcohol at all. The second glass is so much harder to turn down than the first one.

We really can’t emphasize enough the standards at d-wine; it is the crème de la crème of dining in marbella. 118

We started with Artichokes Barigoule comprising of carrots, shallots and parsley in a white wine sauce. This was to-die-for. All the vegetables are locally grown which I am sure contributes to their vibrant flavours plus its brilliant to hear of restaurants keeping things local. While this might not be a dish you would initially opt for, being a vegetarian option, we urge you to give it a try. Trust us, you will not be disappointed. Next up was scallops with spinach purée, garlic cream and mushroom pisto. Did you know scallops are known

as the ‘candy of the sea’ due to their unique sweet and rich flavour? The flavours of the spinach and mushrooms blended harmoniously with the sweetness of the scallops making this an all-round delicious starter. Our final choice was the grilled octopus with an incredible sweet-potato-ginger puree, (we have now decided that sweet potato and ginger should always be combined!) plus sundried tomatoes and finished off with a roasted pepper mayonnaise. While we enjoyed a little break before our main courses were served we took a moment to appreciate the stunning restaurant and superlative service. We really can’t emphasize enough the standards at D-Wine; it is the crème de la crème of dining in Marbella. The details are extraordinary, even down to the temperature of the outside terrace, which is equipped with advanced heating and cooling technology to ensure you can enjoy a glass (or bottle) of wine, cosy and comfortable, even during the winter months. Black cod with a hoisin-ginger glaze and crisp Thai style stir fried vegetables was the first of our main courses. If you have read my previous reviews you will

know I am a Black Cod super fan, and this definitely held its own. We followed this with a tender, juicy shoulder of Wagyu beef which was impressively only 26€, a remarkable price for the quality of meat. But the star of the evening was the homemade pasta with grilled beef fillet, porcini mushroom & brandy cream sauce. Every element was as delicious as the next and complemented each other perfectly; the only disappointment was that I had to share it with my colleagues! It’s not only a large collection of vino, D-Wine excels with. The fine dining eatery also boasts a large array of specialist meat cuts including Brazilian Picanha, Butchers Hanger Steak, Côte de Boeuf, Black Angus “Denver Steak” and Black Angus Short Ribs. With the largest selection of wine in Andalucía it would only be appropriate to have a meat to accompany each and every one! d-winecollection.com

he first time I lived in Spain I was 21. I was neck deep in a rather pointless Media Studies degree at Sussex University involving lots of high-minded theoretical musings but little practical experience. The less pointless component of my course, a joint BA in Spanish meant I had the option to spend my third year studying the more pointless half at a partner university "en EspaĂąa" (In Spain). Eager to discover what the Andalusians made of the hegemonic signifiers present in your average episode of Ground Force, I'd applied to do just this two years prior and been provisionally accepted by the University of Seville. Whilst the sunshine, siestas and lomo beckoned, I was aware of the very happy life I would be leaving behind in Brighton. Although I'd already clocked the media degree was pretty much a waste of my time (or maybe vice versa) and hadn't yet spared much thought for the looming years of student debt, I had developed great friendships and a genuine pride for my quirky, hedonistic, expensive new home of Brighton from two years of clubbing, pubbing and very occasional lectures. These generally came from my dad when I'd ask to borrow more money. I'd long since stopped attending the university ones - they were mercifully briefer, but the words the speakers used were too long for a hangover whereas my dad kept most of his expletives to a manageable four letters. Besides, uni lectures never came with a begrudging hundred quid at the end and in those halcyon days in Brighton a oner could get you three pints, a newspaper and two thirds of a Kit Kat so it wasn't to be sniffed at. Incidentally, there was (and

During that first spell in Sussex we partied like it was 1999 - it was in fact late 2001 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; mid 2003 but who the hell can keep up right? Although Media Studies took a back seat to socialising, I never could shake my curiosity about the approach of an Andalusian native to the nascent, ideologically skewed shifts in narrative in Animal Hospital, so my resolve to live abroad remained. What happened just a few months before I left Brighton nearly derailed my plans altogether, though ultimately my destiny remained with Spain. Midway through my second year in Brighton, I'd met a beautiful, funny, clever girl in a scriptwriting class. We sat together in seminars and doodled on each other's pads. She let me copy her lecture notes. I let her let me. She wrote a deeply poignant short film dealing with childhood abandonment and loss of innocence which was immediately produced by an established film-maker... I stretched a single wank joke to breaking point in a script about a man wot married himself.... nobody produced it.

As the Summer wound on, things developed. Come September, I found myself several months into a deeply committed relationship I hadn't ever seen coming. Despite my love for Brighton, my friends and my new infatuation, by this point I was simply insatiable to discover how exactly a man called Jose approached the analytical paradigm of semiotic markers, analogy, allegory, metonymy and designation in an omnibus episode of Hollyoaks, so despite serious question marks over the viability of a long-distance relationship, I packed my bags and easyJut my way out of England.... ….My misgivings proved founded. Amid the turbulence of a new city, new culture, new university (same old pointless course), I missed my friends, I missed my home and I missed my newfound love like a dagger in the balls. We might only have found one another five months earlier but every morning since, I'd woken thinking of them, only to dive headlong into their embrace. The romance with the girl from the scriptwriting course had quickly fizzled out when she realised I was basically one long wank joke but of that brief union something beautiful was born. She introduced me to a breakfast cereal and we just clicked. At a time when my

party ways were spiralling out of control, my studies an afterthought and my path uncertain, Curiously Cinnamon was my anchor - a port in a storm. When my tummy was empty, they “completed” me. I didn't care that they used to be called Cinnamon Grahams or how many other people had woken up to them before me. When we were together, everything else just fell away. They were home. Now here I was; a stranger in Seville - a place nobody had even heard of Ground Force, Animal Hospital or Hollyoaks and you literally could not buy Curiously Cinnamon anywhere. The first two weeks were the worst. The stomach cramps as I trudged from shop to shop, trying in vain to get a hit. The pedestrians awkwardly crossing the road as I held my empty bowl out to them... Of course in time I adjusted, but it was an ugly transition - picture a protracted version of the “cold turkey” scene from Trainspotting but where you can actually understand what's being said since the cast of supporting characters are just Spanish and not from Scotland. Eventually though, I thrived in Spain, replacing my homegrown Curiously Cinnamon cravings with far more readily available local vices like cheap beer, cheap fags and gambling. I learned to fully embrace the new culture I found myself in and I'm clearly a better person for it, but according to a 2018 report by expat food supplier British Corner Shop, not everyone has my incredible willpower and ability to adapt.

It seems homesick expats in Spain are importing British favourites in their droves, with Warburtons Crumpets heading up a top 10 list populated by McVities Ginger Nuts, Bisto Gravy Granules, Paxo Stuffing Mix and three flavours of Robinson's squash. At 9 is Rubicon Lychee Juice Drink whilst worryingly, numbers 5 and 6 on the list are two types of Aptamil Baby Formula - I mean, there's not outgrowing your vices and there's not outgrowing your vices.... Some 15 years later, as I write this piece, memories of that stolen summer of cinnamon flood back like a bittersweet dream. A fleeting love carried away on the wings of a bright white plane with garish orange lettering. In 2004, my course complete, I'd returned to England, never to reconcile with the crunchy cereal which had for a spell come to define me. Maybe I was a different man, forever altered by my experiences abroad. For whatever reason I'd moved onto toast of a morn... quite probably cos the milk in Spain's shit. That doesn't mean I didn't look on that recent list with some trepidation. Though subconsciously as curious as the very object of my old desire, nobody likes to see their ex in someone else's good graces, so when I realised they didn't rank, relief swept over me like cool milk on wholegrain, swiftly to be replaced with just one burning question..... who the actual FUCK is importing Lychee juice drink??! any of us are familiar with Blockchain as the tech behind Bitcoin, but as some of the largest financial institutions around the world are discovering, Blockchain’s uses go way beyond cryptocurrencies.

Before we look at how Blockchain could affect our finances, here are some important points to remember about the technology:

‘BYTE SIZE’ BLOCKCHAIN BASICS o A Blockchain is a distributed ledger, secured by cryptography and consensus, providing a single source of truth and synchronicity across a wide network o Once a transaction is entered onto a Blockchain, it is immutable (cannot be edited or deleted) o Blockchains can be either public or permissioned. Public Blockchains are available for everyone, permissioned Blockchains are viewable for selected people only o Smart contracts run on the Blockchain and are self executing pieces of code (computer instructions) that can automatically make secure payments once specified conditions have been met o Blockchain technology cuts out the ‘middle man’ by providing high-level security peer to peer networks. o Consensus is what creates the trust required for Blockchain to work without the middle man. The Western world has evolved rapidly with money over the past decade, but there is still room for improvement. We have plastic cards, apps, and instant online payment services for smaller amounts, but bank transfers and crossborder payments could still be faster and all digital payments in general could be more secure. That’s where Blockchain is taking center stage in the Finance industry and is predicted to have the same level of impact as the internet had on the world.

SAY ADIOS TO UNNECESSARY 3RD PARTIES Many current business models could completely disappear over the next decade. Even major payment networks such as Visa and Mastercard are at risk, since there will be no middle man required to make the transactions anymore. Does that mean banks will disappear? No, banking is one of the first industries to adopt Blockchain and they will be utilizing the technology alongside existing systems to better serve their customers. Top banks such as J.P. Morgan, Santander, HSBC and IBM have already started exploring and developing with Blockchain. Luckily, just like the internet, everyone can and will enjoy the benefits of Blockchain without having to know the exact details of how it works. To us, the end-users, Blockchain will just look like another app, website, or device. The technology will be built-in and working its magic, allowing us to do more, faster. Let’s look at this in more detail... Imagine you want to transfer money abroad. Currently, certain cross-border payments can take up to 10 days to clear and make as many as 7-10 stop off points at banks along the way, each taking their fee. With Blockchain, it’s peer to peer, almost instant, more secure and cost-effective.

THE POWER OF SMART CONTRACTS Let’s say you own a company that pays commissions to your sales team and affiliates, or you receive commissions on sales. Smart contracts on the Blockchain could allow the payment

Since the consensus mechanism provides trust and significantly reduces the risk of fraud, things like insurance payouts, or sales refunds could also be triggered through smart contracts on the Blockchain. This would dramatically reduce the time and costs of traditional payment processing, while increasing transparency for all parties involved. This transparency may also lead to other benefits. In trade finance, for example, companies involved in buying and selling good internationally can use a permissioned Blockchain to track in real-time when the goods have been shipped and review all the steps it took to arrive. When received and confirmed, payment is automatically issued via smart contract. If conditions were not met, the smart contract does not issue payment.

CREDIT RATINGS AND FINANCIAL HISTORY Credit management is another financial area to be impacted by Blockchain. The Blockchain itself could serve as a live record of customer information and behaviour, containing ID, contact details, 3rd party credit ratings and other useful data. This would provide real-time clarity, transparency and more accuracy on each customer’s credit history, while maintaining a high level of security.

WHERE ELSE CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE BLOCKCHAIN AND SMART CONTRACTS? Finance isn’t the only industry to benefit from Blockchain technology. Real estate, medical, and food production, are some of the other industries that will see the most interesting use cases.
