CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

This month we turn the spotlight on pop icon, Madonna

M

adonna used a mixture of talent, pulchritude and relentless self-promotion to become one of the most enduring recording artists of the 20th century and became a sensation in the then male-dominated 80s music scene. With a career spanning three decades, and 13 UK number ones to her name, the queen of re-invention is a true iconic legend. Madonna Louise Ciccone Born August 16, 1958 Singer/Actress From Bay City, Michigan, USA Born on August 16, 1958, to parents Silvio “Tony” Ciccone and Madonna Fortin. After their marriage in 1955, the couple moved to Pontiac, Michigan, to be close to Tony’s job as a defense engineer, Madonna was born three years later. Her parents’ strict commitment to the Catholic faith played a large role in Madonna’s childhood. “My mother was a religious zealot,” she explains. “There were always priests and nuns in my house growing up.” Many elements of Catholic iconography, including her mother’s statues of the Sacred Heart, the habits of the nuns at her Catholic elementary school, and the Catholic altar at which she and her family pray daily, later became the

10

subject of Madonna’s most controversial works. Other than religion, another heavy influence on Madonna’s early life was her mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer whilst pregnant with Madonna’s youngest sister. Treatment had to be delayed until the baby reached full term, but by then the disease had grown too strong. On December 1, 1963, at the age of 30, Madonna’s mother passed away. Madonna was only five years old at the time and the loss of her mother went on to significantly affect her adolescent life. Haunted by the memories of her mother’s frailty and passive demeanor during her final days, Madonna was determined to make her own voice heard. In 1976, Madonna caught the attentions of the University of Michigan, who offered her a full scholarship to their dance program. In 1977, during

her undergraduate studies, Madonna was awarded a six-week scholarship to study with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City, plus a rare opportunity to perform with choreographer Pearl Lang in 1978. Following these vibrant experiences, with the support of her dance instructor, she dropped out of college after only two years, to move to New York and further her dance career. During her early time in New York, Madonna became the lead singer of her boyfriend, Dan Gilroy’s, band entitled Breakfast Club. Gilroy introduced her to the head of a vaudeville review in Paris, and she spent some time in France working as a showgirl before returning to the USA to pursue her career as a singer and dancer. Over the next few years she formed various bands including, Madonna and The Sky, The Millionaires and Emmy before deciding to go solo in 1981.

To help get her singing career on the right track, Madonna hired manager Camille Barbone of Gotham Records who taught her how to navigate the male dominated world of business and put together a studio band to accentuate her signature style. Friend and musician, Stephen Bray wrote her first hit, Everybody and Madonna used her brash business style to snag a record deal with Sire Records, a proven recipe for success as Everybody reached number one in the dance charts in 1982. Following the success, Sire agreed to produce the fulllength album, Madonna, in 1983. A slow but steady success including the singles, Borderline, Lucky Star and Holiday. Suddenly girls all over the world were imitating Madonna’s individual sense of style, which included fishnet stockings, lace lingerie, fingerless gloves and large crucifix necklaces. “Holiday”

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT also earned the singer an appearance on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand in 1984 where she told Clark that her main ambition was “to rule the world.” Like a Virgin, Madonna’s follow up track, hit number one and went platinum within a month. A role in Desperately Seeking Susan succeeded this including the release of the soundtrack single, “Into the Groove,” which again hit number one in the dance charts, another number one, Crazy for You, followed. Madonna then started her first music tour, The Virgin Tour and saw 17 of her songs climb into the Top 10. Over the next five years, Madonna’s life was a whirlwind of motion. On August 16, 1985, she married actor Sean Penn and then went on to co-star with him in the film Shanghai Surprise. Madonna then went on to star in three more movies throughout the 80s: Who’s That Girl, Bloodhounds of Broadway and Dick Tracy. The soundtrack album to the latter, I’m Breathless: Music from and Inspired by Dick Tracy resulted in two top10 hits; “Vogue” and “Hanky Panky.” She also produced four more hit albums: True Blue, Who’s That Girl, You Can Dance and Like A Prayer.

1996 was an incredibly important year for Madonna, personally and professionally, taking home a Golden Globe for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, Evita and an Academy Award for Best Music, Original Song, with You Must Love Me. She also gave birth to her first child, Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon with lover and personal trainer, Carlos Leon. A more family focused Madonna made headlines in 2000 when she married British director Guy Richie and had their son, Rocco John Richie. She then made the move to the London West End to star in the play, Up for Grabs and wrote her first childrens book, The English Roses. Not forgetting her musical roots, she went on to release Confessions of a Dancefloor in 2005 and became the artist with the most gold certified singles in the US, beating the Beatles established record. As Madonna approached 50, she faced fresh challenges in her personal life, having spent the past year fighting allega-

tions that she circumvented traditional Malawi laws to bring home her newly adopted son, David Banda, whom she had been raising since 2006. Critics accused Madonna of using her vast wealth to fast-track the adoption process, a charge she vigorously denied. Madonna’s application to permanently adopt the boy was approved by Malawai’s high court on May 28, 2008, she decided to adopt from Malawai again, and in June 2009, after another legal battle, was granted custody of Mercy James. Cracks began to surface in Madonna’s relationship with Guy Richie and in October 2008, they officially announced the end of their eight year marriage following the release of her album Hard Candy. Despite the divorce, Madonna’s professional career continued to grow from strength to strength with her Sticky and Sweet tour becoming her first major venture with concert promoter Live Nation. In 2009, she released a third greatest hits album, Celebration, which became Ma-

donna’s eleventh No. 1 album in the U.K. This release tied Madonna with Elvis Presley as the solo act with most No. 1 albums in the U.K. While preparing for additional European dates of her Sticky & Sweet Tour, Madonna was spotted with Jesus Luz, one of the toy boys from her recent W Magazine photoshoot. They embarked on a short but controversial relationship, during the time Madonna and Guy fought it out for custody of their children. In 2010, Madonna took a music sabbatical choosing to concentrate on her family and growing Material Girl fashion line with daughter Lourdes. She also launched her own fitness center brand; Hard Candy with the first venue opening in Mexico City. In September 2010, Madonna was spotted with another toy boy, 24 year old dancer Brahim Zaibat who she is currently still dating. Rumours have surfaced she is planning to marry her latest toy boy and open an orphanage in Africa next year. It appears Madonna will never fail to astonish and amaze.

A controversial performance of Like A Virgin, on the MTV Music Awards, began the shocking next few years, which continued throughout the drama that surrounded her divorce to Sean Penn. The loss of an endorsement deal with Pepsi and the public declaration by Pope John Paul II for fans not to attend her concerts in Italy were the evident repercussions. Despite this, Madonna continued to gain attention and push social boundaries. First came the film Truth or Dare, a revealing documentary about her Blonde Ambition tour, followed by the publishing of Sex, a soft-core pornographic coffee-table book featuring the pop star in a variety of erotic poses and the album Erotica, both proved to be equally as successful; by the end of 1993, Erotica had reached doubleplatinum status.

How could we not love a double dose of Adam Sandler! From the producers of Grown Ups and Just Go With It, Jack and Jill tells the story of a family man whose abrasive twin sister flies in for the holiday and refuses to leave. Sandler takes on the role of Jack AND Jill, with make-up, a wig and two silicone lumps transforming him into his female form. Britney Spears has become

the sixth person in the world to hit the ten million mark on Twitter, joining the exclusive elite club that includes

Justin Bieber, Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Barack Obama and... Kim Kardashian?

To put the scale of her achievement into perspective, ten million is approximately the population of Belgium! This accolade is a result of over 1095 Britney tweets since the launch of her account, with the latest revealing a picture from her Femme Fatale tour in Paris. However, Miss Spears better keep tweeting as Shakira is close on her toes followed by teen star Taylor Swift. The race is on!

Society Marbella brings you all the gossip and glamour straight from Hollywood By Christie Holland

Last month SOCIETY MARBELLA broke the news to you that Lizzie McGuire starlet Hilary Duff was expecting her first child with husband Mike Comrie. We can now reveal to you the happy couple are having a boy! Duff chose to share her most recent news with the world during her appearance on Ellen, the US chat show fronted by Ellen DeGeneres. After much deliberation, Ellen eventually guessed correctly and Hilary responded, “It’s a boy, good job! I had a feeling it was a boy the whole time!”

ONE TO WATCH!

Each month Society Marbella shares a secret with you. It may be the freshest music artist, an exciting new designer or the next A-list actress, but whoever it is you know they are one to watch. This month, Society Marbella has its eyes on actor HENRY CAVILL

Originally from one of the Channel Islands, Jersey, Henry Cavill took on his first film role in Kevin Reynolds’ 2002 adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo, followed by a variety of TV films and series before landing the a role in The Tudors, which he was nominated for a Golden Globe and took home an Emmy.

14

Stephanie Meyer, author of the Twilight series, publicised her love for Cavill, outspokenly exclaiming he would make the “perfect Edward.” However, as we all know, the role eventually went to Robert Pattinson, as by the time the film came into production, Cavill was too old to play the high school vampire. Another close call came

Lady GaGa and Bruno Mars are two of the most recent acts announced to be performing at the 2011 Europe Music Awards. This year the prestigious ceremony hits Belfast, Ireland on November 6 with Wizards of Waverly Place teen Selena Gomez fronting the show. Jersey Shore’s Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Jenni “JWOWW” Farley, will be on hand to help Miss Gomez present the prizes, as this is the first year the show will be hosted from three locations within the host city. Coldplay, Jessie J and LMFAO are all set to perform at the Odyssey Arena, whilst The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Jason Derulo and Snow Patrol will take to the stage at the two alternative venues. during the casting for Casino Royal, with the decision for lead role torn between Henry and Daniel Craig. Director Martin Campbell was in favour of Cavill, but unfortunately the producers ultimately decided an older Bond would be more appropriate. Dubbed “The Unluckiest Man in Hollywood,” by Empire Magazine, you would expect Henry to have decided to step away from the limelight, but instead he persisted and this is the year his luck has changed, as he is set to be catapulted in

Hollywood stardom. With two feature films hitting theaters in the next year, Immortals and The Cold Light of Day, the latter featuring Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver, it seems 2012 could be the year Henry becomes a true Hollywood Alister. If that isn’t enough, Cavill has been cast as Superman in Warner Bros’ reboot Superman: The Man of Steel. The phrase ‘never give up’ comes to mind, and in this case, I’m sure we will be seeing a lot more of this Jersey boy.

Following a fall out with producers, resulting in a devastating consequence for fans, McKinley High lost a heartthrob. However, it has now been confirmed that Chord Overstreet will be returning to GLEE to reprise his role as ‘Trouty Mouth’, Sam Evans. Chord has been focusing on his music career since his departure from the show, but he will return with a recurring role from the eighth episode of the third series. But with Mercedes loved up with McKinley Titans linebacker, Shane, will a love triangle arise when Sam shows his face?

It appears Oscar nominated actress and star of The Devil Wears Prada Anne Hathaway isn’t planning on losing her most in-demand actress status anytime soon. Despite being in the midst of filming the next Batman film The Dark Night Rises, producers have revealed she has been cast as the female lead role in the film adaptation of the hit musical, Les Miserables. She will play the beautiful and tragic prostitute Fantine in the movie version of Victor Hugo’s classic, directed by Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper of The Kings Speech fame. It is set to be a true A list masterpiece, with Hugh Jackman taking on the lead as Jean Valjean and Russel Crowe in the supporting role of Inspector Javert.

SOCIETY MARBELLA’s thoughts are with E!News co-host, Giuliana Rancic, following her announcement that she is suffering from the early stages of breast cancer. The 37 year old revealed on NBC’s “Today” show that the cancer was found during a mammogram while she was undergoing her third round of in-vitro fertilization in an effort to have a baby. Cancer survivor Christina Applegate has expressed her support for Rancic, exclaiming, “I’m here for her.” She then added, “I know that journey so well, how it feels (to get) that phone call. I get what she is going through.” The TV presenter has revealed despite this set back, she is still determined to have a child as, “this baby will have saved my life.”

SPOTTED !

Blind Date’s infamous Cilla Black reliving the classics in Old Joy’s Pub in Puerto Banus, renowned as a frequent setting for the ladies of the night.

It seems Derek Hough has truly moved on from the nation’s sweetheart Cheryl Cole, with none other than The Hills star and reality TV veteran,

Lauren Conrad.

Publicising their new relationship, the beautiful couple were seen dining in Los Angeles last month before meeting up with Derek’s Dancing with the Stars buddy Mark Ballas to party into the early hours.

If they are hooking up or breaking up, we know about it! In true young Hollywood fashion, Trace Cyrus has announced his engagement to Disney darling, Brenda Song via the web. The older brother of Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus, who previously dated Demi Lovato, has been dating Miss Song since May 2010. Rumours had been circulating that the reason behind their speedy engagement was due to Brenda carrying his child, but Brenda’s mother was quick to squash that story. Is she just in denial? Only time will tell!

CELEBRITY SUPREMACY By Christie Holland

I

n the world of Hollywood, power is everything. As individuals, celebrities continue to reach new heights when it comes to fame, beauty and talent. However, when two influential individuals unite, they raise the concept of power to a whole new level. Their combined stature makes them an unstoppable pairing, capable of taking not only Hollywood by storm, but the entire world. When the term power couple is used, the ultimate duo that comes to mind is humanitarian beauty Angelina Jolie and movie megastar Brad Pitt. Holding their longstanding title as Hollywood’s most preeminent power couple, the pair even have the most famous of nicknames; Brangelina. Following three adoptions and three births, the twosome are more prominent in the celebrity world than ever, with Jolie acknowledged by Forbes as the world’s most powerful celebrity in her own right, a title she took from Oprah Winfrey, and with Brad’s producing and acting gigs raking in the big bucks, their status is only set to rise to further heights. The pair lost likeability points due to their unfortunate meeting on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, while Brad was still married to Jennifer Aniston but thankfully, Brangelina put their power to good use, and their philanthropic values cemented them as the world’s number one celebrity duo. Brad and Angelina may be at the forefront when it comes to celebrity status, but supermodel Gisele Bundchen and her NFL superstar husband Tom Brady are bags ahead in financial terms. Lower key than their fellow twosomes, the pair raked in an impressive $76 million between May 2010 and May 2011 alone. Bundchen, the higher earner of the two, took home $45 million last year from her lucrative fashion and endorsement deals and burgeoning business empire. Set to become the world’s first ever billionaire supermodel, her phenomenal success has made her a superstar in her own right, but combining her bank balance and stature with the recipient of the most lucrative NFL contract in history, has made one of the world’s most beautiful couples an unstoppable force.

16

If success is a turn-on, then Beyonce and Jay-Z must be lusting after each other no end. They may be a two-income household, but both halves can hold their own in millions. Beyonce’s House of Dereon line, numerous chart hits and never ending endorsement deals with the likes of L’Oreal, DirecTV and General Mills ensure she can maintain her Hollywood lifestyle, not that she need worry, Jay-Z isn’t exactly counting his pennies. His shares in the New Jersey Nets, 40/40 club franchise and co-ownership of advertising firm Translation enables him to spoil his wife till his heart’s content. The jury is out on who tends to pick up the greater cheque, with both sides earning around the $35 million mark in the last year,

but one thing is for sure; these two just get hotter and hotter and with a bun in the oven, you can guarantee Queen Bey and the king of Hip Hop’s brand expansion isn’t going to be coming to a halt any time soon. Bringing a bit of British flavour to the elite, football ace David Beckham and his fashionista wife, Victoria are power couple veterans. Married for eleven years, a lifetime in celeb-land, and with a four strong brood, the UK’s most famous faces are still going strong. Despite David’s inevitable career decline, he is still a household name due to his global ambassador standing with Samsung and hefty deal with Adidas, all in all earning him a nice $40

million in the previous year. Whilst Victoria storms ahead with her fashion forward clothing line, a respectable alternative to her questionable solo singing career, it appears this couple may have produced their own greatest rival in the race to the power peak with Harper Seven Beckham, their newest arrival being accredited with title of The Most Powerful Person in The World (under 25), only weeks after her birth.

TomKat, Will and Jada and Gavin and Gwen cannot be forgot-

Forbes highest paid celebrity couples list in record time, and with an array of feature films in the pipeline, including Kristen’s role as leading lady in 2012’s Snow White and The Huntsman, you can be sure their rising status is destined for Hollywood supremacy. It was the famous clinical psychologist and celebrity researcher Jim Houran who once said that “powerful people tend to gravitate toward other powerful people,” and in the world of the rich and famous this can only mean one thing; world domination.

ten when discussing this admirable subject. Whilst not as eminent as the aforementioned, they have all cemented names for themselves as Hollywood leading duos. With their fabulously famous offspring making headlines as often as themselves, the family brand only pushes their power ranking further towards the crown in the race of the rich and famous.

They may have only have been on our radar for a couple of years, but Twilight’s Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are marching themselves up the hierarchy. With Robert only just reached a quarter of a century and Kristen barely able to legally drink in her home ground, they have the youthful advantage. Both receiving a substantial $20 million in 2011 for their headlining role in the global franchise success The Twilight Saga, they have reached fifth place on

THE BEAUTY BAROMETER Leading product ranges, treatments and news from the world of health and beauty

I

Every month our health and beauty expert, Nicola McGeorge, spills the beans on the behind-the-scenes gossip and tricks of the trade

TURN BACK

Time

am terrified of getting old. This year all my friends celebrated their 3Oth birthday’s with big smiles, declaring how happy they were to be entering a new phase in their life. I, however, burst into tears upon seeing my birthday cake with a big 3O on it. Why couldn’t I have stayed 21 forever? Well, as it doesn’t seem very likely that Twilight’s Edward Cullen is going to give me immortality anytime soon, I have had to start incorporating anti-ageing products into my health and beauty regime. As they say, prevention is better than cure. I started using eye creams from my early 2O’s, as overdosing on sunbeds in my teens had caused premature crows feet. I swear by Environ’s C-Quence Eye Gel along with the Environ’s Cosmetic Focus-CIT. The latter dramatically increases the effectiveness of skin care products, allowing improved penetration of vitamins into the active layers of the skin.

Another must are regular CACI facials. They leave my skin instantly brighter and tighter. Following an intense course of ten treatments, I now only require a once a month maintenance trip to reap the benefits of the talented Lucie Lord, in Nueva Andalucía. The electrical impulses used by CACI stimulate and re-educate the facial muscles to achieve tighter and firmer contours. Consequently, muscle tone is improved and lines and wrinkles are softened and smoothed. regularly exercise your muscles right? Well the same goes for your face. The muscles in the face can be re-trained like any other muscles to become firmer and stronger. I have to warn you now, you will look like an idiot while performing this routine, so do so in private. It’s not called beauty sleep for nothing. I aim for ten hours a night, but most people only

need eight. The best investment I ever made was my Tempur mattress, which is a beauty secret in itself. Bad posture and rounded shoulders automatically make you look older. My favourite anti-ageing tip? Laughter! Laughter really can be a delightful and no cost anti-ageing health strategy. In fact, endorphins increase by nearly 30% and HGH (an anti-ageing hormone) increases by up to 90% when people are just thinking about watching a funny video or movie! Remember, “You

ANOTHER SHOT AT LOOKING YOUNG The renowned Marbella Vein Clinic is now offering non-surgical, physician-administered aesthetic treatments which can improve the appearance of frown lines, sunken cheeks, uneven lips, tired eyes and even acne scars. By DR Dhobb

H

aving treated thousands of patients with vascular problems, improving their comfort as well as the aesthetic concern in their legs, hands and face, it became obvious that a more complete approach could increase the satisfaction of our patients. I opted to add non invasive cosmetic treatments to the list of services that our clinic offers, as it proceeds with the concept of global approach to well being and beauty enhancement. The tremendous development of non invasive methods for aesthetic improvement now allows us to obtain very good results in a very short time, think “lunch time procedures”. I have extensive experience in injection treatment and being a board certified surgeon and former professor of anatomy, I have a very good knowledge of the anatomy, so I decided a few years ago, to learn, train and develop the field of fillers and botox injections in my practice and complete a Master in aesthetic medicine. We can provide patients with the best methods of minimally invasive treatments that are used for beauty enhancement and skin improvement. First, Botox° is used to treat “dynamic” wrinkles.

24

When talking about filler products, there are numerous products available in Europe with different effects. In our clinic, safety is our first concern and, for this reason, we are using only pure hyaluronic acid which is a natural component of our body. We use mainly three brands : Restylane°, Teosyal°,a Swiss product, and Juvederm°. These so called ‘Botox Parties’ do worry me, as there are strict rules with aesthetic procedures and a knowledge of the anatomy is paramount. They may be cheaper but it comes at a high price. We all have seen the results of those extreme aesthetic procedures giving the unnatural “plastic look” that was popular in the USA and this should certainly be avoided. I feel that this type of procedure should be soft and adapted to the patient morphology, enhancing it elegantly to obtain the most natural look. We have different tools and products for beauty enhancement. We always start by a careful and complete analysis of the patient morphology and skin condition, assessing the needs, indication and limits of the procedure. We are convinced that when concerning Botox and fillers

injections, less is more and, ideally, the changes after treatment should bring an overall improvement and freshness, making the patient look younger without being obviously noticeable. My work really does complement each other. For example one of the first areas to show signs of ageing is the hands. You only have to look at the media uproar over Madonna when she was photographed with veiny, hollow hands. I wasn’t surprised to see a few months later when she appeared with smooth, youthful hands. It was the only thing that was giving away her age. Depending on what is needed we can treat the hand area in three stages. Firstly the removing of any venous concerns. Next we fill out any areas where there is a loss of tissue, to achieve a plumping effect. Finally any age spots can be treated with cryotherapy. The latter combination can also achieve great results on the décolleté area, where excessive sunbathing leads to a crepey effect. One of my favourite cases so far has been a young lady, in her early 3O’s who came to me enquiring about treatment for asymmetrical lips. This problem was affecting her confidence. After an initial assessment, I opted for a small amount of filler to even out the lips. A week later she came back and said that she felt more positive about herself. That is the best result that you could ask for. The Marbella Vein Clinic , Edificio Camojan , Carretera de Camojan, 29602 Marbella Tel. 952 867 003 / 952 817 062 marbellavein.com

M

oving to Spain six months ago, starting a new job and making the decision to adopt two puppies days after I arrived meant everything else faded into the background, including my skincare regime, so when I was offered the opportunity to sample one of Reflections anti-ageing facials, I jumped at the chance. Verity my therapist, was friendly and bubbly, making me feel completely at ease before I even laid my head on the bed. She explained Reflections use both Elemis and Dermalogica products, but on this occasion I would be experiencing the Elemis Pro Collagen Quartz Lift Facial, as it promotes collagen growth in the cells showcasing an immediate effect, ideal as I was going to an event that evening! Living in Spain, skin often becomes dehydrated due to excessive sun exposure; the Pro Collagen Quartz Lift Facial is moisturizing and hydrating, an excellent solution for sagging skin and wrinkles, a common effect of sun damage. Once I was settled comfortably, Verity began with the welcome touch, a Thai ritual that helps to realign the body and open the hips. The second step was to cleanse my face; a hot towel was used to open the pores and cellular recovery rose capsules, containing argan oil, were

massaged into the skin. Argon oil is exceptionally high in antioxidants and 1000 times more potent than primrose oil, making it an excellent anti-ageing formula. Following an exfoliation, serum and mask, (specifically designed to push the serum into the skin and activate the cells thus promoting collagen growth), I was treated to a wonderful hand and arm massage, before the Pro Collagen Quartz mask was removed. To finish off my blissful 90 minute experience, additional serum, Pro Collagen Quartz Eye Renewal, (known to the pros as Botox in a Bottle) and Pro Intense Eye and Lip Contour Cream were applied before a final, scalp massage and Pro Collagen lifting treatment for the neck and bust. As Verity came to the end of the treatment, I felt so relaxed I could barely lift myself off the bed, if she hadn’t another client, I might have asked if I could have stayed there all afternoon! WORKING FROM THE INSIDE OUT The Intraceuticals Oxygen facial, is a non invasive treatment that targets fine lines, wrinkles and dramatically enhances overall hydration. Loved by our cover girl Madonna, Victoria Beckham and Justin Timberlake, it is now available on the coast.

You’re tired, you’re skin’s dry and you look, basically a bit haggered. If this sounds like you, then look no further than the Intraceuticals Oxygen Facial now exclusively available at the Cosmoclinc & Isabelle’s Aesthetic and Beauty Centre.

Known as “Hollywood’s best kept secret”, these unique Oxygen Facials are used by many celebrities, models and leading makeup artists, as it provides instant results you can see and feel. At fashion week the models were ordered to have them, poor things, before the shows, as it removed any sign of jet lag and make up goes on like a dream. The oxygen infused serum contains lightweight Hyaluronic Acid and a powerful combination of vitamins and antioxidants that penetrates the deepest layers of the skin, making skin tone bright and texture refined. Unlike many treatments there are no extractions, it’s pain free and relaxing. Your skin just feels amazing straight away! Perfect for before an important event. The results really do speak for themselves; the therapist, after working on one half of your face will hand you a mirror to reveal the more pert, fresh and even complexion compared to the duller, saggier side. The facial hydrates the skin, immediately firms and

plumps it up to smooth out fine lines, while giving the complexion a nice glow, making it a fab natural alternative to injections. In between your facial appointments, there is also a line of Intraceutical products that you can use to maintain maximum benefits of the Intraceutical Infusion treatment. If unlike Madonna you cannot afford your own machine, then we suggest you book into Isabelle’s sharpish. Form an orderly queue behind the Society team please. Everyone complimented me on my glowing skin and the results lasted. I would highly recommend this to anyone in a heartbeat; I love the fact that this is a non invasive natural, easy to use and very pleasant way to look my best.” - Katherine Jenkins

GET THE SKIN

Ever wondered how those famous faces stay looking so young? Microdermabrasion takes years off you by deeply exfoliating the skin.

A

s I have mentioned in my previous article, I was a sun bed queen in my teens. Add to that the fact that I used to sunbath using baby oil and you can begin to imagine how much damage I have done to my skin. Pigmentation started to appear in my early twenties on my forehead, nose, under my eyes and above the lip, the latter made it look like I had a moustache. Nice! Exfoliation didn’t make much difference, and as the pigmentation got steadily worse, I knew something stronger was needed. Thank God for Microdermabrasion. I could not believe the difference it made, not only did it get rid of my pigmentation but my acne cleared up as well. I

CACI and Microdermabrasion are the perfect combination to achieve a more youthful appearance.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a system of intense exfoliation and resurfacing using ultra fine crystals that rejuvenate the skin. The crystals work as a gentle abrasive on the skin to remove dead skin cells layer by layer. The vacuum action of the machine stimulates the circulation and promotes increased blood flow to the area. The production of collagen and elastin is stimulated, which results in firmer, more youthful looking skin.

These capsules are infused with essential oils which are far more potent than any dry herbs because the oils are the actual active ingredient or the life force of the plant. They contain a blend of the following three oils which are a synergistic blend of fat soluble anti-oxidants: • Frankincense oil which supports normal cell regeneration and increases the immune function. • Thyme oil which protects healthy DHA levels. DHA is a nutrient that supports brain function and normal cardiovascular health. • Clove oil which is nature’s richest source of anti-oxidants and eugenol. OLDER... AND WISER?

While the rest of the world seems to be obsessed with the cult of youth, isn’t it time that we embraced the mellowness that ageing gracefully brings? Giles Brown, SOCIETY MARBELLA’s man with the hearing aid cunningly disguised as an iPad, ponders the passing of the years.

I

admit that ageing can difficult in a town like Marbella. In the old days - before the world and its (soon to be divorced) wife were getting pre nups, nips and tucks and those outside the plastic surgery circles thought that Lipo was one of the Teletubbies, there were two questions that you didn’t ask; “Where are you from” and “What did you do in the UK?”

But with the amount of plastic surgery currently flooding the market, the question “How old are you?” is also strictly off limits. Of course a gentleman will never ask a lady’s age - though if she is wearing a schoolgirl’s outfit it may be wise to check that she is in fancy dress for the evening or face the daunting prospect of the school run the following morning.

Those questions would often meet with an uncomfortable silence, or worse than that, an answer such as “Five years for the Bond Street job” for the latter. On my first weekend back in Marbella, I ended up having a boozy afternoon session with a couple of East End boys. “What are you doing in Spain, son” one asked as we were on our fourth pint “Well” I mumbled “I’ve just left Brixton...” “Say no more boy, drinks are on me. Oi, Charlie! Have you met Giles? He’s just got out of a spell in Brixton nick!” said my new best friend, stuffing a handful of notes in my pocket.

These days, mothers and daughters attend the same functions, borrow each others outfits and go on holiday together. Perhaps the most high profile example of this has been Madonna and daughter Lourdes. They are frequently seen on the red carpet together and were also snapped by the paparazzi on holiday in the South of France this year, where the fifty something Madge was cavorting in the water with her 24 year old boyfriend. Alarm bells must already be ringing for the 15 year old Lourdes, when she brings her first proper boyfriend home to meet Mummy Dearest in a few years time. Incidentally, have you noticed that we never seem to hear of Madonna’s boyfriends after she dumps them? I’m not saying that she tires them out and then cuts out and feasts on their still beating hearts, but then again....

Needless to say, I didn’t think it wise at that point to confess that when I meant “left Brixton” I actually meant “Just sold a rather nice duplex apartment overlooking Brockwell Park Lido, a mere five minutes from Brixton Tube Station”

30

But here are some points to avoid as we age gracefully in the passage of time. As you sail into your 40s and 50s, fashion is perhaps the biggest minefield. Take a stroll around Puerto Banus of an evening, and provided that you can fight your way past the ladies of negotiable virtue that seem to automatically assume that because you’re a single male over 40 you must be gagging for it, you see some sights that would send the Fashion Police reaching for their Gucci arrest sheets. Items that should be avoided include blatant designer logos, leather trousers (at all times - only Jim Morrison looked good in them and the Lizard King’s been dead for 40 years) leopard skin, Lycra and clam diggers. Fur is a huge no no, at all ages. (And as an aside I saw photos of a self-styled “Marbella celeb” modeling fur in Milan recently. I was sorely tempted to have her pet chihuahua skinned, fashioned into a clutch bag and presented to her - just to prove a point). If you are male beachgoer, over a certain age, Speedos are forbidden in the strongest possible terms. I’ll wait for the Christmas decks to emerge to see dangly hanging balls thanks! Just remember that what

looks good on a teenage model at London Fashion Week won’t look the same on a fifty something at La Sala. You should be aiming to follow the timeless style of Brian Ferry, Helen Mirren or David Bowie not Peter Stringfellow. When in doubt, ask yourself the following question- would David Niven wear this? As for music - please God don’t try and be “down with the kids”. If you were born in the 40’s, that means that you lived through some of the most incredible music - The Beatles, Stones, Led Zep, The Doors, Bowie, James Brown etc. So don’t try to be trendy and claim, as doomed PM Gordon Brown once did, that he had Artic Monkeys on his iPod. Dancing is also a tricky one. If you’ve got the moves like Jagger all well and

good, but you are more likely to pull your back than pull a bird. General behaviour has to be considered, Yes, I know we all loved the “live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse” motto, but if you are in your mid sixties, then perhaps you should be considering whether hanging out in Marbella nightclubs seven days a week is the wisest of moves. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t get out there and let what’s left of your hair down - and one of my favourite artists, Peter Beard, was once physically ejected from a New York nightclub by the bouncers when he was in his seventies - but you want to avoid looking like the oldest swinger in town. My classic came at the 20th anniversary of Comedia. As a young lounge lizard in the 80’s I had, of course, been to the opening night.

Standing at the bar, I was treating a young lady to my full smooze routine, when she remarked that she didn’t remember the opening of Comedia. “Yes” I said, flashing my best George Clooney grin “It was a pretty wild evening, wasn’t it?” “No” she replied. “I don’t remember it because at the time I was three years old”. The crashing and burning sound after that reply was my youth flying out of the window… Personally I have little to fear as I grow older, as I’ve already been through the hair falling out stage as well as drooling and memory loss - though I blame the last two on Jaegermeister shots in Terra Blues. So I just approach my advancing years with the following mantra - Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is not!

This is exactly what happened to us only last month, when we were invited to visit Gunnel’z Fashion for a chat with Gunnel Bergman, the inspirational owner.

Pension Schemes in Spain:

MOVING YOUR MONEY

OVERSEAS By Dimas Cuesta Montejano

When considering moving to Spain, it is essential to get expert advice from an international tax adviser familiar with UK and Spanish systems. One of the most common issues we normally overcome as advisers is the transfer of UK Registered Pension Schemes. When leaving the UK and becoming a tax resident of Spain, there are several tax issues to consider when transferring your pension to the CGRPP.

What are the tax implications for funds invested in a QROPS prior to drawing benefits? The QROPS is deemed to be “an employment related pension plan” and not a “personal scheme for individual savings”. This is necessary to avoid the application of anti-avoidance provisions applicable to discretionary trust savings accounts located in tax haven jurisdictions. An “employment related pension plan” needs to be directly or indirectly related to the employment of the member, in which retirement is the main event that would trigger benefits. On this basis the QROPS will be a nonqualified employment related pension plan. Therefore, on the assumption that the member and beneficiaries do not have the right to receive benefits from a QROPS until retirement and/or death, the member will not be subject to Spanish tax simply due to the existence of a QROPS. However, once the beneficiary reaches their Selected Benefit Date, the member could become immediately liable to pay tax in Spain, based on any increase in value during the particular tax year, regardless of whether benefits are received or not. It is essential, therefore, that the member selects a retirement age at which they will begin to take distributions. Depending on the size of the

fund it may also be advisable to have more than one QROPS with differing retirement ages in order to defer liability to Spanish tax on at least some of the QROPS funds allowing the owner more flexibility.

Taxation of Income Benefits Benefits from a pension scheme are treated for Spanish tax purposes as employmentrelated income and as such, whether drawn down or received as an annuity from a QROPS, are subject to Spanish Income Tax on the entirety of the amount. It is recommended that you speak with a financial adviser to find out which rates would be applicable to your situation.

Restriction of Income Benefits There are no additional Spanish tax restrictions on income benefits to those that already exist within the QROPS legislation.

Taxation of Lump Sum Benefits The withdrawal of a Lump Sum from the QROPS will be treated no differently from that of any other withdrawal, and as such will be fully assessable by Spanish Income Tax. This is the same scenario as taking a Lump Sum

from a UK Registered Pension Scheme. Where possible, it would therefore be appropriate to take benefits before becoming resident in Spain and then affecting a ‘drawdown to QROPS’ transfer. It is important to note that partial transfers would be treated as Unauthorised Payments and would therefore be inappropriate.

Wealth Tax Issues From the 1 January 2008, Wealth Tax was abolished in Spain and therefore there are no issues in relation to Spanish residence and QROPS. Spanish Estate Duty and Forced Heirship Issues Benefits from QROPS are not subject to the equivalent of Spanish Inheritance Tax and should also not be subject to Spanish forced heirship limitations or Spanish succession law in general, since this is only applicable to Spanish nationals. The tax issues outlined above have been specified as general guidelines for transferring your pension to QROPS. It is recommended that you seek the advice of an adviser before committing to any scheme, who would be able to assess the best method of managing your funds. TORQUE TALK

Our in-depth motoring review

TORQUE TALK

Exclusive interview with

CHRISTIAN VON KOENIGSEGG O

ther than military and aviation buffs, few people are aware that Sweden produces some of the most advanced combat aircraft in the world. The Swedish Air Force’s Saab J39 Gripen is a fourth generation, multi-role jet fighter, uniquely designed to operate in Sweden’s harsh winter climate and terrain. By the same token, Sweden is an unlikely place for the genesis of a supercar. But

By Ian Kuah for the last decade, a company called Koenigsegg has been making worldclass supercars that can stand toe-to-toe with the very best from the established Italian and German marques. Fittingly, the cars wearing the Koenigsegg family crest are designed and manufactured in a building on the former Swedish Air Force fighter base at Ängelholm.

63

TORQUE TALK I have visited Christian von Koenigsegg twice on home turf. But recently, he came to Marbella for the 50th birthday celebrations of a friend, and I took the opportunity to learn more about him and the unique handcrafted speed machines that bear his family name. I started off by asking Christian how it all started, and what has driven his continuing success in a tough business that requires a committed petrolhead and shrewd player to survive. “I have asked myself many times why I am doing this and where my passion for cars comes from,” he said. “After all, my family is not interested in cars. My father likes horses, and my mother makes hats. Most of my childhood friends were not interested in cars, yet

I had this all consuming passion for building my own car.” “I came to the conclusion that I first became interested in cars in the late 1970s, when I was five years old and saw a Norwegian puppet movie about a bicycle repair man who dreamt of building his own car.” “One day he meets this fabulously wealthy oil Sheikh who gives him the money to build his car, which turns out to be an outrageous firebreathing monster that he drives in a Le Mans type race. I left the cinema thinking that I wanted to build a car like that when I grew up.” From that day on, Christian read everything he could get his hands on about cars, especially sports cars, and he started drawing them too. “You know how you get an impression and it stays with you for life?” he said. “Well the idea of building my own car like the one in the movie was my recurring dream.” I come from a family of entrepreneurs. My mother makes hats, which she sells through her own business, and my father was a successful self-made businessman. The practical side came about through tuning mopeds and motorcycles in my teens. “I increased the compression ratio of my motorbike on the floor of my room,” Christian explained. “It gave me the hands on experience to understand how mechanical things work and are connected.”

64

For Christian, the world of business beckoned when he was still studying. “I started my first company with a friend in university when I was 19,” he explained. “The idea was to start making some money by buying something and selling it for more.” The Berlin Wall had just come down and the former Eastern Bloc was being dismantled. “We found out there was a shortage of plastic bags and pens in the Eastern Bloc countries, so we started exporting pens and plastic bags with upside down print.” “Then we found out that the Russians had problems with salmonella in their frozen chickens, so we started sup-

plying them with good quality frozen chickens from Norway,” he recounted. “We soon ran out of Norwegian frozen hens, so we started shipping them frozen chicken from the USA where they grow them big and fast. For a while we were the largest importer to Estonia, sending out two 40-foot containers a week.” “That went fine for a while until the local mafia asked for their cut, so we stopped that, but it was good business while it lasted. Next we bought a small chain of shops and eventually sold part of it. Now we had some money, my thoughts returned to my dream of building my own car.”

TORQUE TALK

“I still have the first drawing of the car from the 12th of August 1994,” he said. “I

had been drawing cars since I was five, but this was the day I first drew the Koenigsegg. I wanted to have a full prototype completed in 12 months.” “I found a guy who made formula racing cars, and an industrial designer who could build a 1/5th scale model. This early stage took nearly two years, which I thought was a disaster at the time. In reality, it was really quick, even by industry standards. I still have the original prototype, which has a glass-fibre body and was powered by an Audi V8 motor,” said Christian. “We had VW lined up to supply us with these engines, until a senior guy at Audi took exception to his parent company going over his head, and stopped the deal.” “After going down a side road with a detuned version of the Minardi Formula One engine, we decided to develop our own engine based on a 4.7 litre, V8 Ford competition block with 32-valve heads and a pair of Rotrex centrifugal superchargers,” Christian explained. “That gave 655hp, and we developed it by casting our own block using roughly the same layout but with many improvements for over 800hp, and eventually closer to the magic 1,000hp.”

And so, in 1996, when Christian was 24 years old, he and his close friend Michael Bergfelt, started investigating the possibility of building a sports car. They got in touch with technical consultants and then checked out the possibilities of getting finance for such a project from NUTEK, the Swedish Government’s financial help scheme for technology projects. At this point, Christian asked his father, Jesko, for help. “My parents never told me that they wanted me to be any particular thing like a doctor or lawyer,” Christian explained. My father said, “Nice idea but we have other things to do.” Undeterred, Christian and

Michael presented a business plan and budget to him a few weeks later, imploring him to read it. “I was quite amazed,” said Jesko. “The plan was so well organised and presented, I just had to take up their cause. I approached Nutek on their behalf and we booked a slot for a presentation.” “The review board later told us it was one of the best presentations they had ever seen, and that they would give us all the support and advice that they could. The result was that we got some start up money from the Swedish Government technology fund to build the first Swedish supercar.”

“My cars have a clear lineage,” he said. “If you imagine the original 1964 Porsche 911 is our 1996 car, then the latest 997 is our new Agera. Heritage, lineage and relationship are clearly from the same family tree, but much more advanced in engine, chassis, aerodynamics and detailing, as well as the quality of its construction and finish too.” “So many small car companies have come and gone,” explained Christian. “Statistically, most people fail at this business, and it was important for me to figure out why. I made it a point to figure out where all these people went wrong and do things in a way that would not fail. And I am still here.”

65

TORQUE TALK Fifteen years on, there have been four generations of the Koenigsegg supercar, each clearly descended from the previous ones, but all based on the idea of a car with a removable roof panel that looks like a coupe when it is closed. It really is two cars in one! The tub and bodyshell are made from carbon-fibre, which makes the car’s structure both very light and immensely strong. You can have any colour you want including full visible carbon, where you can see the carbon-fibre pattern below the lacquer. Once such car lives in Marbella with Christian’s customer friend, and the ruler of Abu Dhabi also has a home here with a Koenigsegg in the garage. The latter car is one of two made with a paddle shift gear change system. In the course of improving the cars, Christian and his team occasionally have to invent things that do not exist, or find ways of improving

66

existing things like turbocharging. “Previously, we used two superchargers and had very good results, but turbos are more efficient because you are using the exhaust gases to charge the intake for free,” Christian explained. “Our fourth generation car, the Agera, is turbocharged, and our own patented VTG (variable geometry turbocharger) technology reduces turbo lag to near zero and allows the use of higher boost,” Christian explained. “Previously, you had to choose between low lag and high boost, now you get can have both.” “With just 47 employees, we are a small company, but we have designed our own engine and homologated our car worldwide. We go from A-to-Z on the powertrain, and even design and build our own ECU circuit boards, which is normally never done by a car manufacturer.” “We don’t do this to show off our ability but simply out of necessity, as

we simply cannot afford to go to a big company like Bosch or Siemens,” he said. “So if you open one of our ECU’s you will see the Koenigsegg name on the circuit board.” “On the other hand, we find that having everything in house here is a huge advantage from the point of view of flexibility and speed. It means we are not beholden to someone else’s schedule, and if we need to change something, it can be started on immediately. There should be drawbacks in doing all this work in-house, but I still have not found them!” There is no doubt that one of Christian’s personal traits that has stood him in good stead in this tough arena is his obsessive attention to detail. “I have always had an enquiring mind,”

“I am always looking at every detail, trying to figure out how things works and how to make them better.” he says.

TORQUE TALK “When I was designing the first prototype, I also analysed every detail on real cars, even down to door seals. This helped to give me the knowledge I needed when the time came to build my own car.” One of the advantages of being on the old fighter base is access to one of the three runways for high speed testing. “Performance testing as well as ECU mapping set up for normal driving can literally be done on our front door,” said Christian. “In our car, the relationship between the widely disparate parts like the ECU and the chassis is the people. Our engineers know every part of the car and we have people working on both chassis and electronics. This extreme integration is one of the keys to our success.

We don’t give up until it’s perfect.”

67

TORQUE TALK

Like the fictional racecar in the movie that inspired Christian all those years ago, his own creation is a fire-breathing monster. The 1,115hp Koenigsegg Agera R recently set a new world record for the 0-300km/h sprint, its 14.53 sec time beating the mighty Bugatti Veyron Super Sport’s by a whopping 2.17 sec. Incidentally, Koenigsegg is not a Swedish name. As Christian explained, it hails from an aristocratic German family whose lineage goes back to the 11th Century.

68

His grandfather moved to Sweden and married a local girl. The marque badge you see in various places on the car is a modern adaptation of his family crest. “Even though I now have children, there are still only 12 people with the Koenigsegg name left,” Christian joked.

Maybe Christian Koenigsegg’s quiet confidence comes from his aristocratic background, but there is no question that the cars bearing his name are themselves aristocrats in the supercar world.

Key to the door At a time when form, function, and technology have come together to propel personal convergent products to the forefront of consumerism, metal keys, key fobs, and the whole slew of items attached to keychains represent one of the last bastions of personal clutter. Most personal devices are becoming smaller, lighter, faster, and stronger, while keychains, key fobs, and remote alarms are becoming increasingly unwieldy. Recognising this paradox, Keyport is dedicated to creating a more compact, convenient, and stylish alternative to the traditional keychain. Keyport streamlines the most important everyday personal items we carry and consolidates them into a device that allows users to access any one with just the slide of a thumb. The Keyport infuses this traditionally utilitarian function with the opportunity to display one’s personal style. mykeyport.com

Opulent Splendour By Laura-Jane Bruce

H

otel Finca Cortesin is located in the lush countryside in-between Marbella and Sotogrande. Overlooking the warm Mediterranean Sea, where nature gradually vanishes into the deep blue, this private community presents a sanctuary of haven. Offering a rich and varied tradition of outstanding food, art and hospitality, Finca Cortesin awaits. Situated on an estate of 2,147,600 square-meters, this oasis of serenity has everything your heart desires, from well-manicured golf fairways, exclusive private villas, and a centrally focused hotel. The hotel is decorated in a traditional and antique style, with high ceilings and a historic ambiance, even though the building is only three years old. The tiles adorning the halls and walkways are imported from Portugal from the 18th Century, but that’s not to say the style is aged and tattered; the opposite infact, rooms and communal areas are the perfect fusion of modern and vintage. Finca Cortesin offers a total of 67 suites, ranging from juniors at 52 sqm, to the 625sqm private villas. All are spacious, expansive, and designed with refined simplicity. Flat LCD televisions, complimentary wireless connection and expansive terraces are some of the standard features, and combine the perfection amalgamation of classic and style. We couldn’t believe the size of the bathrooms, bigger than the bedrooms in some hotels along the coast! Home of the VOLVO World Match Play Championship, Finca Cortesin Golf Club is ranked among the best courses in Spain.

76

Designed by Cabell Robinson and landscaped by Herald Huggan, this course provides a unique and highly aesthetic natural setting, along with over 300 varieties of flora and the Mediterranean forest. The hotel itself houses one of the most luxurious spas on the Costa del Sol. Dedicated to relaxation, beauty and wellness, the aim is to pamper your body and soul. Two swimming pools, a thermal area, Finnish sauna, ice cold plunge pool, the only snow cave in Spain and a state of the art gym await your arrival; I was instantly disappointed I hadn’t brought my bathers with me! The purpose of this visit to Finca Cortesin was to sample their culinary delights. There are five restaurants to choose from, including the newly launched beach club (currently closed for the winter months), Clubhouse, part of the golf course, classic Italian dishes in Don Giovanni, Schilo, Finca’s Asian fusion gastronomico, and El Jardin, a synthesis of International and Spanish cuisine, and the setting of our dining experience. El Jardin is now being run by Executive Chef Lutz Bosing, creative and artistic, he brings a wealth of experience and ideas. Previously working in the infamous Barcelo La Bobadilla in Granada, Lutz also handles all other kitchens in the hotel apart from Schilo. Shown to an oblong table out on the temperate terrace, we were generously served a trio of cocktails, each more refreshing than its predecessor. Firstly a Martini de Albahaca, light, fresh and decorated beautifully with a vibrant basil leaf. To follow, a Sherry Martini, complete with a skewer of olives and to finish, Caipirinha de Pepino, the cool cucum-

calmed the dense textures and flavours. For this, Gago 2007 was delightfully decanted, marrying with the richness from the succulent cut.

Dinner guests varied from beach club and restaurant owners, Ian Radford and Claire Strutton, Bobby and Zoe Strutton, the latter a leading florist, to the coast’s most renowned cosmetic surgeon Dr Kai Kaye and partner Nicole. We were also fortunate enough to be joined by General Manager of Finca Cortesin Rene Zimmer. Being led to El Jardin after a mini tour of the splendorous grounds, Rene guided us to our spherical table in the corner of the restaurant, but thankfully still in earshot of the soothing piano player in the hotel lobby. After being introduced to our waiter and sommelier for the evening, we were shown our degustation menu, prepared especially by chef Lutz for our visit.

was expressed by all. To accompany our first two dishes, we poured over Jane Ventura 2009, the citrus aromas complementing the depth of both fish platters.

To begin our voracious feast; pumpkin ‘salmorejo’, topped with plump sardines. The squash element in the dish was a refreshing alternative to the archetypal Andalucían dish, in which tomato is used. The smooth but rich consistency of the pumpkin puree blended with the acidity of the pilchards perfectly, along with the crunch fish stick, decorated with mini shrimp shells.

Another fish course ensued; John Dory wrapped in potato with ‘Mojo Picon’. The crispy potato rosti encasing shell ensured the moisture from the perfectly cooked flaky fish was sustained. The smooth red pepper pulp was zingy and contrasted with the light potato parcel. For this, Enrique Mendoza 2010 was presented, more oaky and deep in flavour. Rene works closely with Lutz and the sommelier to choose the wines carefully, striving to promote local wines where possible; this particular one from Alicante.

Secondly, warm sea bass carpaccio, caught locally, and drizzled with a tangy reduction. The luscious texture of the wild lubina combined with the wheat semolina, was light and airy, and seeing as we had another four courses to divulge through, thanks

Now onto the meat dish, beef medallion ‘Villagodio’, resting on a layer of delicate foie gras, garnished with a wafer slice of Iberian ham. The combination of the filet with the pate was absolutely flawless, while the accessories of tempura carrot and broccoli

Two delicate desserts followed, both enhanced by MR 2008 from Malaga. The first, and the all-round favourite, was an apple trilogy; lightly poached squares, a smooth sorbet and a piquant coulis, sprinkled with a cinnamon crush. Nestled between the fruit tiers was a slender slice of gooey goat cheese. Normally a pair suited dressing a salad, the apple and cheese combination was impeccable, one of my fellow diners exclaiming that at our next ‘Come Dine with Me’ style gathering, she would be creating this dessert. However, no offence to her, but I don’t think she will be able to create the equivalent to that of the artistic chef. ‘El Jardin’ custard marked the completion of our gastronomic voyage, dusted with coffee and adorned with a foam crown. After much hilarity at Dr Kai, the ‘steady handed’ surgeon who accidently knocked his dessert over, we retired to the bar, where we each enjoyed a quiet digestif of coffee and cookies. Whispering plans of when our next visit is going to be, we left with bellies full of delicious cuisine and heads full of dreams. Having a private luxury hotel a stones throw away is truly a marvel, and it won’t be long before we’ll be dropping by to make use of the glorious Spa. Arabian Nights By Laura-Jane Bruce

eading down the walkway into Suite, you are instantly submerged in a Moroccan haven. Carved wooden doors and delicate archways lead you into the atmospheric restaurant, the location of many exclusive events and private soirees. The Arabic rugs lining the aisles are soft underfoot, and transport you to exotic dreams of glamourous Marrakech and Casablanca. Alcoves adorned with luxuriant sofas and lavish cushions provide guests with the perfect place to relax, concealed from the main dining area; your own personal sanctuary. Suite is a unique concoction, with the ability to cater to both effervescent groups and romantic lovers. Friday and Saturday are when Suite is at its busiest, but whichever night you choose to dine or dance, you are guaranteed vibrancy and an invigorating energy. Come midnight, the restaurant transcends into a lavish nightclub, serving the world’s most selected spirits and bouncing seductive music off the sumptuous walls. Outside you will find Suite’s Roman Amphitheatre style terrace, filled with an abundance of shisha pipes and further plush loungers allowing you to enjoy an alfresco experience, come rain or shine due to the external canopy.

78

Greeted at one of the main bars by vivacious manager Rafa who kindly presented me with a boozy kir royale, the complexity of the location arises. Each decoration and element has been carefully selected in order to create and develop the perfect Moroccan atmosphere. The mood lighting, flickering and warm contributes to the inviting décor. The authentic Moroccan lanterns fill the room, providing the perfect mix of luxury and authenticity. Majestic disco balls and Buddha statues scatter the exterior, combined with the hues of deep red, orange and black, creating the perfect ambiance of opulence and hedonism. We were shown to our table, wonderfully nestled in the corner with a perfect view of the entire restaurant, by Tara Lorimer, head of Public Relations for Hotel Puente Romano and Marbella Club Hotel. Once seated, an aperitif of tartar de gambas with a tangy pineapple foam was laid down in front of us, the fresh and piquant aromas combined with the stimulating atmosphere surrounding us was a telltale sign of the pending creations we were about to encounter. We dined on a selection of dishes from the three menus that Suite offers; the

main menu, incorporating a wide range of Spanish and Moroccan plates, the fusion alternative comprising of Eastern and Western delights, and the €30 deluxe three course menu. This excellent value for money option is sure to explode in popularity, each dish creating the optimum Moroccan experience, and it won’t break the bank! Succulent scallop ceviches from the fusion menu launched our banquet, dressed with a zingy lime and coriander salad, and scattered with pink peppercorns. Fresh on the palate, the combination the sharp herbs and zesty salsa naturally infused the luscious mollusks, and in turn lightly cooked them to the perfect texture. Also; spinach, seaweed and wakame salad, fused with fresh mint and a subtle chilli dressing, the softened leaves and algee blending with the biting vinaigrette to perfection.

with seasoning and complete the cooking process. The drizzled honey sauce and chaste steamed vegetables made this dish light and fresh, a welcome alternative to the more intricate and complex predecessors. Lastly, a traditional Moroccan tajine, complete with mawkish vegetables and fragrant couscous, the semolina classically harmonizing with the moreish tomato, onion and zucchini. This is a delightful and more exciting alternate to the traditionally bland vegetarian dishes restaurants usually serve, but there is the option of chicken or lamb if you’re a meat eater like me. This is available on both the main and €30, along with our final two courses.

Desserts ensued, including a tangy red berries pavalova, with real fruit slices and an accompanying coulis. A rich and decadent chocolate mousse followed, adorned with white chocolate wafer and crispy spheres. These two dishes ended what was a relaxing yet vibrant night of delicious and simple cuisine, faultless hosting and a harmonious ambiance. We will certainly be returning to sample their infamous sushi and sesame-crusted red tuna loin in the not too distant future! Suite Restaurant and Nightclub Hotel Puente Romano, Golden Mile, Marbella Tel. Tara 676 962 852; Rafa 676 920 474 suiteclubs.com

Our third and final starter came from the main Suite menu, an unusual Pigeon Pie Royal. Admittedly having not tried any experimental meat previous to this, I was nervous, but combined with a sweet cinnamon flavour running throughout the pastry parcel, the two flavours married together without fault. Not one ingredient in each dish is wasted; you can taste all compounds within each bite. Now onto three platos principales, each with their own aromatic flair. A yielding Lamb Shank, falling off the bone with each touch, was selected from the main menu. Right down to the last morsel, the meat maintained its delicate texture, oozing moisture and tenderness. The vegetable puree, ours pumpkin, was pure and velvety, and combined with the apple and miso juice to create the ultimate fragrant dish. From the Oriental fusion menu, black cod ‘wafu’ resting on a Himalayan salt plate. Pioneers of this revolutionary technique, Suite are one of the only restaurants on the coast to use this innovative method to their advantage. The fish is gently pan fried, and placed on the heated salt block to slowly permeate

Around the World in

SIX DISHES By Laura-Jane Bruce

I

must admit that I very rarely dine in Puerto Banus, as the prices usually belong in the higher bracket, overflowing with tourists, and the cuisine isn’t always as luxurious as you would like. However, Pravda is a welcome exception to the trend, as the flavours and arrangements of the cuisine, combined with the excellent value for money, is a breath of fresh air, serving food worthy of your custom. For over a decade, Pravda, nestled amongst the world’s must luxurious clothing retailers, has been serving an acclaimed mix of contemporary International cuisine, becoming a renowned hotspot for discerning diners.

80

Pravda’s unique style of menu is something that instantly attracted me. Each dish is allocated its own personal country where the bulk of ingredients and combination of flavours originates. Whether looking for salmon gravlax from Stockholm or glazed lamb rack drizzled with a light mint tea sauce from Morocco, you can guarantee that there is a dish from all regions of the world. Pravda was also the setting for the gala dinner after the Marbella Masters Tournament at the end of August. Well-heeled diners from all over Marbella attended, including tennis stars Bjorn Borg and Pat Cash, and enjoyed a superb game-set-match menu and plenty of free flowing celebratory champagne. This refreshing approach to dining that Pravda adopts is credit to head chef Dennis Wellerfors. Born in Sweden, he has worked in many top quality restaurants here in the Marbella area. Dennis’ philosophy is to create simple dishes with pure flavours; he doesn’t need to use groundbreaking techniques to create dishes with depth, character and style. He also has a very close affinity with his suppliers, thus ensuring every dish sent out of the kitchen is created using the best pos-

COSTA CUISINE sible quality of ingredients. His inspiration? None other than Gordon Ramsey. However, Dennis doesn’t have the same temperament as the foul-mouthed chef; he simply commands respect without having to resort to vulgar language. There is the option of simply popping in to enjoy the decor, friendly service and contemporary atmosphere created through the amalgamation of the above factors. Their celebrated wine bar has earned a worthy reputation as a lively location to enjoy a glass of bubbly or two. Shopping amongst the world’s most opulent labels and spotting those celebrities taking a leisurely stroll is fairly stressful after all! As the weather has been so temperate of late, we were able to dine on their

lush terrace, overlooking the luxurious yachts and boats Puerto Banus is famed for. However, thankfully the terrace is situated away from the constant flow of tourists parading along the front line, so at no stage were we interrupted from our oasis of tranquility the terrace evokes. To begin our degustation feast, we were served three decadent starters. Firstly, the Pravda set sushi menu, a selection of nigri served with gari ginger and wasabi, chosen personally by the chef. Our selection was grande in size, and included eight portions of nigri, oblong moulded sushi rice topped with various versions of fish, and six of maki, the traditional cylindrical sushi enveloped in a seaweed casing. The rice used in all sushi pieces was wonderfully sticky and light, absorbing the complement of the soy and wasabi accompaniments. Following this

was velvety smooth foie gras terrine, a specialty from Paris, served with a slice of hard bread and a fine salad. We also sampled their antipasti, a selection of five small dishes from around the world from the starter menu. The dishes come from all sections of the kitchen (hot, cold and sushi), and change day by day. Our particular combination included a Tom Kha Gai spicy coconut soup, the flavours of the mushroom and coriander bursting with every mouthful. Also seared scallops with a smooth romanesco puree, meaty bacon and asparagus pieces, drizzled with truffle oil. A couple of deep-fried spring rolls bursting with chicken, lime leaves and coriander, and the condiment of nuoc cham dipping sauce, spicy but not overpowering, blended perfectly with the fresh fruity

flavours. Another delectable portion of sake nigri salmon sushi appeared on our indulgent platter, along with succulent duck breast with hoisin sauce and carrot puree. The root vegetable pulp complimented the delicate duck. If those three enchanting starters weren’t enough to fill our bulging bellies, we gorged on two main dishes; the Vietnam pan-fried lubina, served on a trio of maki rolls, on a sea of Tom Kha Gai sauce. The coconut milk, galangal and lemon grass are typical ingredients used in Vietnamese dishes, and feature heavily in many restaurants in Southeast Asia. Secondly, a moist grilled beef tournedos on a bed of opulent truffle risotto, thyme marinated cherry tomatoes and a rich red wine jus. To complete our decadent experience at Pravda, we sampled white chocolate cream, topped with raspberry sorbet,

crushed pistachio and Australian anis crackers. Thankfully, the dish was wonderfully light, fully cleansing the palate after such a lavish feast. The cuisine served at Pravda is both stylish and complex, and bursting with flavour and class. The simplicity of the dishes, combined with their luxurious flavours, ranks Pravda as a deluxe restaurant with excellent value for money; a welcome alternative to the typical restaurants that grace the streets of Puerto Banus. ocated in the Cristamar Centre, Salt and Pepper Café Bar is a healthy eating concept at the southern end of Puerto Banus. Open Monday to Saturday from 8.15am until 10pm, it is the perfect eatery for all day dining, with an array of breakfasts (cooked and uncooked), wraps, sandwiches and salads. Salt and Pepper offer all dishes as takeaway, and also deliver in the Puerto Banus, Nueva Andalucia and Nagueles regions. There is the option of indoor dining, or enjoying the sunshine on the lush terrace. Surrounded by nature and with fresh, delicious food on hand, you are transported away from the typical hustle and bustle of Puerto Banus to your personal haven of tranquility and calm. On this particular dining experience, we chose to sit in the air-conditioned restaurant, watching over the open plan

kitchen while the chefs were hard at work, conjuring all sorts of delicious wonders for us to try. Salt and Pepper’s philosophy surrounds the Swedish culture of fresh food. The husband and wife team behind Salt and Pepper Café Bar are Swedish and Moroccan, and have an abundance of experience working in the hospitality industry between them. Tina has previously worked in hotels such as Grand Hotel Stockholm, Puente Romano Hotel and Finca Cortesin, and her husband Wissal has managed nightclubs, restaurants & cafés for the last eight years, his last job working in Finca Besaya. Tina and Wissal saw a gap in the market in Puerto Banus that was in high demand. Southern Spain has

COSTA CUISINE Lastly was the Salt and Pepper Cheeseburger. Thankfully these were mini in size as we were ready to burst after our refreshing feast. The burgers made from Moroccan kefta meat, a variation of minced meat fused with spices, and was accompanied with a portion of chips. There is the option of ordering salad for your side, but what are burgers without chips! To conclude our stimulating banquet, we were served a decadent chocolate brownie, topped with vanilla ice cream, slowly succumbing to the heat from the oozing coco slice. Secondly a moist carrot cake, percolating with a rich cream layer.

access to such beautiful produce, and Tina wanted to bring a slice of her home to Marbella. There is a Swedish touch permeating through the entire menu, whether in the fresh salads or traditional herbs used. A telltale sign of a restaurant serving up fresh cuisine is the colour of the ingredients themselves. All dishes were awash with reds, greens and yellows, all vibrant and revealing into the high quality of the produce. The ingredients are all sourced from local businesses in Marbella & San Pedro, bought fresh and prepared and used that exact same day. Whilst we were perusing through the extensive menu, we chose to try some of Salt and Pepper’s fruity cocktails. We decided to share a Hawaiian Fantasy (strawberry and banana) and a Caribbean Dream (raspberry, cherry, mango and apple). They also have various alcoholic cocktails, but we opted for sin alcohol, it was 2pm in the afternoon after all. Made with real fruit, they are healthy and delicious, with no added sugar, preservatives or artificial sweetness, just pure natural goodness. We dined on a vast selection of Salt and Pepper’s classic dishes. Firstly the Light Wrap, bursting with succulent chicken, smooth cream cheese, crunchy peppers, red onion and tomatoes, fresh spinach and delicate avocado slices. To enhance the palate of crisp flavours, a zesty chilli jam encased, providing a rupture of spice; a perfect contrast to the subtle components in the light ingredients. It was clear to see from our first order that the portion sizes are extremely

generous, and the prices, truly reasonable. Secondly, The Fisherman salad, complete with clean flavours including cucumber and peppers, sliced tomatoes, smooth avocado and egg, complete with a tower of Swedish shrimp and topped with shaved red onion, accompanied with a tangy herb dressing. It was a refreshing sight to see the accessory vinaigrette served on the side, meaning you choose how little or how much dressing you would like. Seeing as there were four of us sharing the salad (and the other dishes we were delightfully served), Tina brought us an extra pot without even having to ask. This salad is one of the dishes on the menu that you would find in many traditional Swedish restaurants in Sweden itself.

Salt and Pepper is exactly what Marbella is missing, somewhere to enjoy a quick snack or feast on a banquet as we did. The fresh ingredients make the dishes what they are; tasty and bursting with flavour, and aside from the overindulgent puddings, are all relatively healthy. With plans to open Salt and Pepper franchises in Casablanca and Marrakech, it won’t be too long before these restaurants will be sprinkled all over the world. Salt and Pepper Café Bar C.C. No café bar is complete without the classic Club sandwich. The bread was lightly toasted to avoid becoming soggy from the tomato and cucumber inside, and was jammed with tender chicken pieces, airy cheese, crunchy bacon, rich mayonnaise and egg. All flavours married together perfectly in this stack of goodness. Next came Skagen toast – one of the most traditional combinations you will find. This was served the traditional way, on round slices of toast rather than in sandwich form that is listed on Salt and Pepper’s bulging and creative menu. Consisting of Swedish shrimp and a Skagen mix, lemon, dill and mayonnaise, resulting in a zingy chutney that combines perfectly with the crustaceans.

estled at the rear of Centro Plaza, overlooking a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean Sea, lies the elegant, Charme Café. Brainchild of husband and wife team Mehdi and Charlotte, Charme Café is a unique establishment where customer service and excellent food quality are the definitive. Mehdi comes from a strong hospitality background, having launched Magna Café and previously worked in the Red Pepper on the front line of Puerto Banus. The couple noticed a gap in the market and decided to open their first joint venture, creating a home from home, where guests could come and enjoy excellent quality food in relaxed surroundings. We arrived at Charme Café on a late Wednesday afternoon to be welcomed by Mehdi and Charlotte themselves. One of my favourite attributes Charme Café offers is their all day kitchen, open from noon until late, you can choose to dine whatever time you like, abolishing the pressure of designated meal times and emphasising the tranquil ambiance. Before taking our seats on the terrace, we wandered inside; intrigued by the interior. Family pictures hung in the reception area and friendly smiles were presented by the staff. Quaint and homely, the restaurant was unassuming and humble, a welcome alternative to the hordes of ostentatious venues in the nearby Puerto Banus. We settled down at our table just in time to receive our starters. On this occasion, I was delighted at Mehdi and Charlotte’s suggestion to bring us a selection of dishes as I had been perusing the a la carte menu for over fifteen minutes and was still no closer to making a decision, it all sounded too intriguing.

84

A Hidden Gem By Christie Holland

First to arrive was foie gras on toast with red onion marmalade, traditional yet distinctive, smooth and tender, it was the perfect opening to our meal; the caramelized onions in particular emphasised a deliciously sweet flavour. A seaweed salad topped with grilled langoustines was the next delivery, a truly unique concept executed with exceptional presentation in a genuine sea shell. The entire menu has a Scandinavian influence, primarily due to Charlotte’s Danish heritage and Anders’, their head chef’s, Swedish origin; this has proved increasingly popular with the abundance of Scandinavians residing on the coast. So much so, Charme Café now produces a traditional Scandinavian buffet for the festive period. On the 21, 22, 23, and 26 December, guests can enjoy a sumptuous authentic feast of everything from smoked eel to herring and gravlax. However, be sure to phone and book early as this unique celebration is sure to

book up fast. We were also advised that Charme Café now offer outside catering so you can share their enchanting menu with your friends and guests in the comfort of your own home. For our main dishes we were presented with sea bass from the a la carte menu, served with a fragrant curry sauce, vegetables and a mouthwatering potato gratin and an elegant surf and turf. The latter was a taster from the specially designed New Year’s Eve set menu. On arrival of the dish, Charlotte explained to us the New Year’s Eve menu is accompanied by Moet and Chandon Champagne, and live music will entertain guests throughout the evening, again early reservations are suggested. The exceptional quality of the filet steak was evident from the first bite, succulent and juicy, I was suddenly extremely saddened to be sharing this course with my colleagues and made a mental note

to discuss with my friends spending New Year’s Eve at Charme Café just to enjoy that dish all to myself! As we dined, Mehdi spoke passionately about the importance of keeping the meat quality at the highest standard, he explained that a large portion of their regular clientele are ardent meat lovers and that retaining excellent quality is vital. To conclude our delectable experience, we sampled the chocolate coulant with homemade vanilla ice cream and mango sauce. I could smell the delicious cocoa

before it arrived at the table, an advantageous lead enabling me to have my spoon at the ready. I was however taken back by the phenomenal attention to detail on the plate and delicate decoration, it almost looked too good to eat… almost! The rich chocolate flavour was flawlessly accessorized by the cool and clean vanilla ice cream, whilst the mango sauce seamlessly accumulated all the tastes and aromas, a frightfully perfect conclusion to our ambrosial feast. You can’t help but feel at ease at Charme Café, almost as if Mehdi

and Charlotte have welcomed you into their home. It is apparent during our afternoon with them, how enthusiastic and fervent they are and how much of their heart and soul is present in every aspect of the food and service, to the décor and the name, which I eventually learnt came from the first syllables of their Christian names, a true epitome of this idyllic venue. Following a painful battle with pancreatic cancer, Steve Jobs sadly died from respiratory arrest on October 5, one day after the announcement of the new iPhone 4S being released. Following his death, Apple released the subsequent statement; “We have lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.” We want to thank Steve for making all of our lives apple shaped.
