It’s May and things are heating up here at SOCIETY Marbella, not only have the beach bars started opening their doors (the official sign of summer) we have been inundated with fabulous events throughout April. If you’re anything like the SOCIETY team, this is the time to sample all the new venues opening for the season and enjoy the buzz returning to the coast. Head to page 100 to see the who’s who of Marbella and maybe, if you’re lucky, you might even find you have made an appearance. We have featured dozens of celebrities on the cover of SOCIETY over the years, but I believe this month is a first; a fully-fledged super starlet born in none other than our hometown of Marbella! And Millie is one for many firsts, being our youngest ever cover star, but don’t doubt this 15 year old, with a Screen Actors Guild Award and Saturn Award under her belt, there is no stopping this youth. t’s rare we have a Marbella born starlet grace our cover, but this month we have a special treat for you, as we look into the life of young actress, Millie Bobby Brown. Born on February 19th 2004 right here in Marbella, Millie is the third of four children. Her English parents Kelly Brown and Robert Brown, a real estate agent, lived on the coast during her early years before heading back to the UK when she was four years old and then immigrating to Orlando, Florida four years later. It was there during a weekend acting workshop that she was spotted by a talent scout who told her parents, “she has instincts you cannot teach”. Millie’s parents sacrificed everything moving her family to Los Angeles to help their daughter’s acting dreams come true.

Within three months of moving Millie made her acting debut on the ABC fantasy drama series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland portraying the role of Alice. This followed with a starring role in BBC America paranormal drama thriller series Intruders and guest appearances on NCIS, Modern Family and Grey’s Anatomy. Despite these smaller parts, Millie kept getting passed up for bigger roles. With no major jump in her career, her family became so financially strained they had to say goodbye to Hollywood and move back to the UK to stay with family. “I was devastated. I wasn’t getting work.

I thought I was done,” recalled Brown in an interview with the Daily Mail. However Brown landed an audition for Netflix’s Stranger Things, “I had to cry in the audition. My emotions were so raw, I hit it out of the park,” she continued. A few weeks later Millie was on a plane to begin filming in Atlanta. It was her role as Jane ‘Eleven’ Ives in the series that transformed her into a fully-fledged superstar. Since taking on the role back in 2015 Millie has been nominated for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series and has won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series with her co-stars. She also took home the 43rd Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor in a Television Series.

In April 2018 the then 14-yearold was the youngest person to be named in Time’s 100 most influential list and the youngest person to be appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

Her new found fame resulted in being featured in the music video for Sigma and Birdy’s single, Find Me, as well as commercial advertisements for Citigroup. Millie made her modelling debut in January 2017 in Calvin Klein’s By Appointment campaign and was then signed by the agency IMG Models which followed with a Moncler campaign in 2018. In April that year, the then 14-year-old was the youngest person to be named in Time’s 100 most influential list and the youngest person to be appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

alongside her mother. The film is the last by executive producer, Yoshimitsu Banno, as he died on May 7th 2017. This may be Millie’s first feature film, but with a sequel, Godzilla vs. Kong scheduled for a 2020 release, we’re sure it will be another of many firsts for this local celebrity.

The couple had previously suffered a devastating miscarriage so the birth was even more joyous with Gordon posting on Instagram, “After 3 baftas and one Emmy… finally we have won an Oscar.” In the cutest reference to their new son, Oscar James. “(He) touched down at 12.58 today for some lunch.” We wouldn’t expect anything else from a Ramsay! AMAZON A fter 25 years of marriage Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos has divorced his wife MacKenzie. The couple revealed via Twitter that Jeff would retain 75% of the couple’s Amazon stock shares meaning he will continue to be the largest shareholder of the e-commerce giant, valued at more than 900 million dollars, as well as gain voting control over his former wife’s remaining shares. Bezos will also maintain ownership of the couple’s shares in The Washington Post and his space exploration company, Blue Origin. MacKenzie Bezos will retain 4 percent of Amazon, worth about 35.7 billion dollars and tweeted, “Grateful to have finished

he Duchess of Sussex is keen to follow in the footsteps of the Queen by giving birth in her new home, Frogmore Cottage, to avoid the ‘goldfish bowl’ of the hospital ward. Sources stressed that Harry and Meghan, who are expecting their first child within weeks, have not ruled out a hospital delivery because a woman having a baby over the age of 35 is at an increased risk of a premature birth or the need for an epidural or caesarean. But as she has sailed through her pregnancy she would love to have a safe delivery in the privacy of the cottage. If she does go ahead with the home birth, Meghan could give birth without any pain relief at all, but would also have the option of gas and air, a warm bath, a birth pool, TENS or relaxation techniques such as hypnobirthing, which Californian Meghan, who favours alternative therapies, is reported to have studied.

anessa Hudgens has revealed she likes to challenge her body with different diets depending on what’s happening in her life. Selfdescribed as an exercise fanatic, Vanessa switches between Keto and Intermittent Fasting. “I’ve been intermittent fasting a lot, because for me, I love pasta, I love pizza, and when I’m not eating carbs I feel like a little piece of me dies,” Vanessa told PEOPLE magazine with a laugh. “Intermittent fasting is great, because when I am fasting – those first two weeks are definitely rough, I’m not going to lie, but after that I feel more grounded and powerful in my workouts. And I get the nutrients that I need when I eat, but I also eat what I want. Hudgens says she eats for six hours – between noon and 6pm – and fasts for the other 18. “I feel like it’s a recipe that works for me,” she continued. “Everyone’s different of course, but for me, that’s what’s been the most beneficial so far.”

Ecologication: IT’S NOT A THING, BUT IT SHOULD BE!

Having recently travelled through parts of Southeast Asia I feel utterly horrified at the lack of worldwide education concerning environmental issues. The feeling gave rise to this article which I hope touches some nerves and inspires you all to continue the good fight in preserving this planet. One of the best contributions we can offer to our planet’s conservation is to educate the children, not just to recycle, but to show them the beauty this earth has to offer and why it is essential that they help to save it, and, just as importantly, how. Inspire them to watch David Attenborough, take them travelling, let them watch real-life documentaries on the matters at hand. We don't only want to show the negative effects of humans on the planet but also what it is we are trying to preserve; we need to show them that this place is worth saving and that they need to take some responsibility for it. If they understand habitats, eco-systems, the lifestyles of animals and then examples of how human activity destroys this, it may inspire them more to

conserve, preserve and make choices that make an environmentally friendlier impact. If a child knows that the consumption of beef worldwide has wiped out thousands of acres of rainforest, and contributes to the destruction of our ozone, perhaps they’ll refrain from eating it. Seeing the devastation with their own eyes and understanding it is the only way to pass on this knowledge. Perhaps if they came to realise that the demolition of rainforests destroys those eco systems, habitats and animals they have come to know about and be interested in, this knowledge may push them to help make a difference. Let’s encourage them to eat less, or no, meat and promote eating fresh fruit and vegetables instead. Reduce waste buy only buying foods that are not contained in a package. Always use aluminium water bottles and refill them, no single use plastic! All of this is beneficial to both the environment and their nutrition and health. Win win. If a child saw one of the most beautiful places on earth and returned a few years later to find it covered in plastic, perhaps it would inspire them to refrain from buying anything plastic. Just telling someone to do something doesn’t often have the impact required to instigate change, especially when it comes to human habits. I know this may not be possible so I’m trying to promote other, simpler methods we can use to make the necessary influences on their minds and hearts.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Always explain why… When we do ask that they recycle, we need to explain why. Maybe a weekend project of going to your local recycling plant will help them to understand the way in which materials are recycled but we still need to tackle the actual purpose of doing it in the first place. Having lived not too far away from a landfill in the foothills of Casares I had to daily experience the horror (not to mention the smell) of the amount of trash we are piling into our earth. I began to imagine that landfill multiplied by the amount of people in the world and how devastating that will eventually be. I have shown this and explained it to our children and it seems to be taking effect. As is the fact that this is a country which is trying to deal with their waste; imagine all those that are not and the hearts start to sink. Take them to a landfill, show them what it is we are doing all over the world. All our waste either ends up in a place like that, being burned and causing toxic fumes to pollute the air, or in the oceans where it destroys sea creatures and life. If a child can understand the negative effects of pollution, they may decide against being a part of it. By opening their eyes to this we are empowering them to take control and make their own decisions. Another great way to encourage a positive impact is to organise a clean up; choose a beach, local park or forest, get a few friends together and make a day out of removing unwanted rubbish from our own habitats. We live near a river in Gaucin and each weekend a lot of people descend upon the swimming

spot there. Many of them sadly leave their rubbish behind as though there is a secret campo garbage collector that is going to magically appear to clean up after them. Now, whenever we are out and about, in the car, walking on the beach or wherever we happen to be, and they notice something that has no place being in a tree or a bush or the sea or river, they demand we stop and retrieve it, take it with us and dispose of it properly. It doesn’t matter whether it is our rubbish or not, it is our environment and garbage doesn’t belong there, so we’ve got to make a difference and remove it before it does any damage. They've inspired me to do the same. If they appoint themselves as ecowarriors (they can even wear capes and masks if they want, whatever works!) we can encourage them that by doing this they are global super heroes rescuing the planet from drowning in rubbish. Recycling in the home is a must as everything begins in the home. Having separate bins for plastic, glass and paper as well as fresh food scraps which can be made into compost is the first step. If recycling is a normal thing at home, it will become standard practice everywhere else. If we encourage them to reuse items from our own refuse we also inspire their creativity. We can encourage them to look up ways to reduce, reuse and recycle and let them make new stuff out of old. Our carbon footprint is something which can be monitored. If a child understands this concept and what affects it then they can conscientiously work toward reducing theirs and their family’s impact on the world. The eco-warrior attitude can be something they can really embrace and put to work. We are giving them the mission to make sure their own negative impact is kept to a minimum and why this is important. Let’s explain to them why we don’t waste water, or electricity, or any resources. It isn’t easy to achieve but if we try our best to teach the children we are making a huge step in the right direction. I’m pretty sure in a few years they’ll be teaching us what we could do to reduce our negative impact on the environment and help to make things better for their children to come.

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mindblowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

Part 1

For those of you who are new to reading Jonathan’s column, or simply for anyone who would love to find out how one of the coast’s top colourists got to where he is now, then sit down, grab a cuppa and let us take you on a journey that started in Bradford in the 80s and ends up in Marbella. This two part interview will delve into Jonathan’s colourful career from opening a salon with a rather insane business partner to his glittering celebrity clientele. This is a warts and all confession style look into the life of celebrity hairdresser Jonathan Yeadon.

a ving spent a life time as a young child in hair salons it was as much in my blood as working down the bar. If you ever wanted to find my mum, she was either at the cash and carry or getting her hair done. My grandma, mum and aunties all had their hair done twice a week, come rain or shine, money or no money. My earliest memory as a child is my mum’s hairdresser letting me take the rollers out, after my mum had been baked under the hood dryer. I remember being absolutely amazed, (I will never forget that feeling,) at how my mother’s hairdresser brushed out her hair and backcombed it up into... my mum! That began my love of hairdressing. I was 16 years old when I finally plucked up the courage to tell my Mum that I wanted to be a hairdresser. She turned to me and said, ‘You bloody well won’t. You think I’ve spent ten years pulling pints behind a bar for you to be a hairdresser. You will go to university and get a degree.’ After many a night arguing I eventually agreed to do my A Levels on the terms that if I still wanted to be a hairdresser, my mum would support me in every way. This was the first time I caught her out lying. Did she let me apply to

hairdressing college? Did she heck! She instead brought home a job application for the Commercial Union, filled it out for me and sent me off to the interview. I only ended up getting the job didn’t I? I absolutely hated my time working there, but it you want to know anything about personal insurance, I’m your man.

I REMEMBER BEING ABSOLUTELY AMAZED, (I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT FEELING,) AT HOW MY MOTHER’S HAIRDRESSER BRUSHED OUT HER HAIR AND BACKCOMBED IT UP INTO... MY MUM! THAT BEGAN MY LOVE OF HAIRDRESSING. In 1989 my friend opened a salon and I got a job working for her on a Saturday. From the first day I KNEW it was exactly what I wanted to do. I eventually told my Mum I was leaving my job and joining the salon team full time as a junior. She didn’t take it well. ‘Do what you bloody like, I am sick of you,’ she snapped at me. It goes without saying that from that day on she didn’t pay for her hair. Later on she confided to my auntie, ‘It’s a good job that he is an alright hairdresser, can you imagine the shame of having to go to another hairdresser to do your hair, because he was no good. Oh the shame.’

Next month...we will find out how Jonathan managed to open his first salon only 2.5 years after becoming a certified hairdresser and why he decided to swap the grey skies of Manchester for the sunny shores of Spain.

My career highlights are... well, there have been a few, so just give me a minute to think. I guess I would have to start off with being asked to look after Victoria Beckham’s hair whilst she, David and the family were staying at The Marbella Club. She was absolutely fabulous and thankfully we got on like a house on fire. She has a fantastic sense of humour, very very dry. Honestly, I could quite easily have gone on a night out with her and had a ball. She is a fantastic Mum and the kids were delightful. Victoria doesn’t take herself that seriously in real life, the business and the brand is simply a machine.

My favourite period in hairdressing was... the end of 80's, early 90's. Why? Big hair of course! You just can’t beat scrunch dried, bleached hair. I became known for my perms, mainly because I was one of the few who could create perfect spiral perms without snapping your hair off.

But this is Audi we are talking about, and the e-tron exudes every hallmark of the world-class design and build that we have come to expect from the marque with the four rings. To prove that their first ever production full electric car has the right stuff and a decent enough range to be practical in the real world, Audi took us to Abu Dhabi where we drove it on urban and suburban roads, highways, a twisty mountain road, and even a desert off-road course. While we had the chance to photograph the e-tron in a studio in San Francisco back in September, this and indeed a motor show stand is never a realistic or indeed flattering place to judge a new design. Abu Dhabi gave us the chance to see the e-tron in a real world environment. This first contact situation was enlightening, the e-tron perfectly blending in, its modern, elegant lines clearly identifying it as a currently generation Audi SUV, sans any pretentious, pseudo-futuristic features adopted by some electric or even hybrid cars. While the e-tron comes with 19-inch wheels standard, our test cars all wore the optional 21-inch diameter wheels, shod with 265/45ZR21 Goodyear Eagle tyres that visually shrink the car. In reality, with an overall length of 4,901mm on a 2,928mm wheelbase the e-tron sits between the Q5 and Q7 in size. The accentuated haunches over each wheel arch add muscle to the e-tron’s flanks, giving this elegant design a purposeful stance that befits its full-sized SUV status. Comfortable, well designed, and beautifully crafted, the cabin offers plenty of room in the back, along with a decent sized boot. The cabin architecture is a product of the same school of thought we have seen with the new Q3, and uses stepped horizontal layers to define different functions such as the telematics and ventilation system. This accentuates the apparent width of the car while at the same time creating a 3D effect that usefully diminishes the visual mass of the dashboard. The Audi Virtual Cockpit instrument pack will be familiar to drivers of current Audi models, with only the bespoke readouts pertaining to the cars electric drive as new features. Meanwhile the big touch activated MMI widescreen in the centre console will also be a familiar element to owners of the current generation A1, A6, A7, A8 and Q3.

With a rear compartment that offers plenty of leg and headroom for passengers, the e-tron might even become popular with VIP chauffeur companies operating in emissions conscious urban areas like Central London where free entry is granted to electric cars. Relative silence is a big part of any luxury car experience, and here Audi’s engineers pushed the boat out to reduce road and wind induced noise to an absolute minimum to match the whisper quiet electric drivetrain. “As an electric car has no internal combustion engine noise, every other sound is no longer masked,” explained Wolfram Jähn, the engineer responsive for Sound System Development. “That means road and wind noise suddenly become more prominent to occupants. While engine noise mostly changes in pitch and frequency unless you are cruising, wind and tyre rotational noise are more constant, and so become tiring over distance.” The engineers thus launched a two-pronged attack on road and wind noise, with both axles and motors receiving a blanket of sound deadening material to prevent road noise reaching the cabin. This is a fairly straightforward process with the front axle since it is further away from the cabin and occupant’s ears. However, the rear electric motor transmission unit is positioned in the centre of the multi-link rear axle right under the rear of the cabin and so requires more sound deadening as well as elastic mounts to reduce mechanical vibrations. In addition the sub-frame is decoupled from the bodyshell by bespoke rubber bushes. The double-glazing option was fitted to all our test car, along with the virtual rear mirror system whose slim aft facing cameras have a fraction of the physical size of conventional mirrors. This helps to reduce both aerodynamic drag and wind noise. The larger (20 and 21-inch) wheels available on the e-tron feature tyres with a special foam band on the inside. This technology arrived with the Mercedes-Maybach in 2015, and is even used to good effect on the McLaren 570GT. Achieving a reduction of between 6-9dB in rolling noise reduction depending on the road surface, this is a critical component for the super quiet e-tron experience.

The e-tron is powered by two asynchronous electric motors, the rear one being more powerful to achieve the desired rear-biased handling balance. The two motors jointly produce 95kWh, which is the equivalent of 402hp and 490Nm of torque. To maximise efficiency the rear motor does the driving under light load conditions, and when the car is ‘gliding’ on level ground the motors operate free of magnetic drag torque.

play. In town where they are most used the range might go as high as 530km, with recuperation accounting for up to 30% of that range. Because of this and other real world use issues EV users will have to learn a whole new paradigm based on practical range that varies with the weather and terrain amongst other things.

However, the e-tron tips the scales at a hefty 2,500kg, which takes its toll outright performance. Thus 5.7 sec to cover the 0-100km/h sprint and a 200km/h top speed are far from mind blowing.

Whether petrol or diesel, a combustion engine thrives on cold, dense air, and its fuel consumption is only slightly affected by ambient temperature. In parenthesis the power delivery and range of an electric car can drop off significantly according to downward changes in ambient temperature.

Range is a constant issue with electric cars, and the quoted 400km range is more realistically around 320km in real world conditions with a lot of highway driving where throttle off and brake recuperative charging hardly come into

However, while the e-tron can eke out 530km in careful urban driving in mild temperatures, this plummets dramatically in cold weather, with a similar level of range degradation seen in highway driving.

Thus, the combined average urban and highway range of 418km in mild temperature conditions drops to around 320km in cold weather. In addition, terrain, driving style, and heating and air-conditioning usage all affect power consumption, and hence range. Another (current) downside of EVs is their long charging times, but by developing its own fast charging system Audi has won a leg up over the Jaguar I-Pace, Mercedes EQC400 4matic and Tesla Model X 75D. If you charge the e-tron from the 11kW AC mains charger provided with the car it will take all of nine hours to top up the battery. But Audi’s wall mounted 150kW three-phase DC fast charger can deliver enough juice in half an hour to take you 296km. In comparative terms this is 38%, 21% and 22% faster respectively than the e-tron’s above mentioned marketplace rivals.

Once you accept this you will find that Audi’s first all-electric production car does exactly what it says on its elegant and faultlessly crafted tin, providing an admirably seamless and serene driving experience. Once you have ‘energised’ the system by pressing the Start button you select either D or R to go forwards or backwards. In D you can then select the driving mode you want such as Sport. The standard Adaptive Air Suspension hardware is shared with the Q7 so its effectiveness in providing good ride comfort is a given with Comfort, Normal and Sport settings on tap. The system has an operating height adjustment range of 76mm, and in Off-road mode the ride height is raised by 35mm. Meanwhile the four position ESC (Electronic Stabilization Control) has Sport and Offroad settings, and can also be de-activated completely. The power steering is a variable ratio system that becomes a bit more responsive when you are in Sport mode, and has quite natural feel and feedback.

To illustrate that the e-tron handles well Audi gave us the chance to push it hard through the bends on the mountain road leading to Jebel Hafeet, the highest point in Abu Dhabi. This recently constructed road has two lanes per side and so is plenty wide.

Even a Q7 equipped with the optional rear steering feels much more agile and is also lighter. Despite the more powerful rear electric motor that is supposed to deliver a more driver oriented handling balance there is simply not enough grunt to throttle steer the e-tron much.

Selecting Sport mode and reducing the ESC we charged the corners on mountain road, using both lanes on a racing line, and going deep into some of the bends on trail braking to settle the front axle and rotate the tail into the turn to reduce the inherent stabilising understeer.

We think Audi was being over ambitious in tempting us with this curvy mountain road, where it quickly became apparent that the e-tron is not a sporting SUV. Until such time as Audi offer an S or RS version, the e-tron should be considered a comfortable town and highway cruiser par excellence. Here it is in its element and cossets occupants with a level of refinement and comfort worthy of high praise indeed.

As the heavy battery pack is mounted on the floor in the middle of the car, literally the lowest point of the e-tron, it should help handling and make for a lower polar moment of inertia. That said you really feel the sheer weight of the vehicle, and despite adopting late apexes to mitigate understeer the e-tron does not respond with the agility of the much lighter Q3 or Q5.

On the sandy off-road course where we drove cars wrapped in the white, black and orange disruptive camouflage seen on the roll-out in Copenhagen earlier in the year, we soon came to appreciate the strengths of the electric drive on loose surfaces. It was very apparent that unlike with a combustion-engine vehicle where too much power can be applied, and is then cut back by the electronic traction control system, the sensors that feature millisecond response will only deploy the right amount of power to the driven wheels. Couple this to the electric motors that deliver peak torque just off ‘idle’ speed, and you have an ideal powertrain for off-road driving that offers the built-in advantages of low and high ratio gears. Thus, we made it round the off-road course with ease and no sign of wheelspin or any other traction histrionics normally encountered while negotiating loose surfaces on gradients. As the sun began to set we left the desert road and turned onto the highway that would take us back to Abu Dhabi. Cruising serenely once again at the enlightened 140km/h speed limit, the most prominent noise we heard was the constant splattering of local insect life coming to a sticky end on the front windscreen. Our drive in and around Abu Dhabi, encompassing urban, highway, and off-road driving highlighted in no uncertain terms that the e-tron is a well conceived, well engineered, and comfortable vehicle that performs as advertised.

To verify that the e-tron is no one trick pony we rated the multitude of objective qualities mentioned above during our test drive. On top of that we also scored the cars subjective feel good factor, which had been an open question before we got behind the wheel. In this regard the e-tron felt so well sorted it even managed to convince this EV sceptic just how well rounded and mature an EV can be even at this relatively early stage of the electromobility game. The only thing we never quite got used to or indeed liked was the rear mirror

camera system. While we appreciate that they reduce the cars drag coefficient from 0.28 to 0.27, the fact that the screen are flush with the door panels means that the reverse image sits at almost 90 degrees to the reality. And with the image also several inches below where you expect to find it on a normal exterior door mirror you tend to take your eyes off the road that little bit longer as you try to find it and then interpret what you see.

That freaked us out at the beginning and we were still not comfortable with it at the end of the day. Since it hardly benefits fuel economy this is one cost option we can live without. In any case this camera mirror system is not legal in a number of countries including the US, so the argument may well be a moot point where you live.

n my youth, I had what appeared a bulletproof approach to boozing - I did it... often and lots, but never truly paid for it the next day. Whilst girlfriends and flatmates were retching in the bathroom or groaning mournfully from the sofa, I seemed to sail through unscathed, bemused by the gulf between our notions of a hangover. I wouldn't have troubled Mensa the morning after a big night out, but I'd never thrown up, didn't get headaches, nausea, memory loss or paranoia. No matter how blotto, my in-built homing beacon always got me back intact, with wallet, keys, mobile and generally dignity accounted for. Some people are good at sports, art or academia but my gift seemed to be pissing my student loan up against a wall whilst avoiding the immediate splashback. It was a truly fun time in my life which produced great memories and better friendships but you have to know when to pull the plug and in my case it was some six years ago when I woke up after an epic binge which began in Fulham and wound its way back home to Brighton via East Croydon, taking in two house parties, one nightclub and many, many pubs.... as I'd only later recall. Finding myself on a Monday morning, the wrong side of 30, still dressed in the bespoke disco-leopard onesie I'd donned for the Fulham party Saturday night, I was left to piece together my weekend. Staggering around my flat, looking for a bag and phone a niggling feeling told me I'd long since lost, I caught my reflection in the hallway mirror - the dishevelled lovechild of Cats, Starlight Express and Rab C Nesbitt stared back through red eyes, squinting against a gnawing shame it couldn't yet identify. With my flatmates all out at the type of 9 to 5's I'd chronically avoided, no means to call any of my fellow partygoers and no clues yet posted on facebook, events remained consigned to flashbacks. “The fear” began to set in. In over a decade of debauchery I'd never woken up in a jail cell or next to a corpse and despite having a big mouth, people were generally entertained, not offended by the things that came out of it, even when three sheets to the wind. Nevertheless, in the last couple of years, that bulletproof armour showed signs of

serious wear, no doubt accelerated by my status as a 30-something, habitually single, habitually pissed, budget Russell Brand. Each time I attended a friend's wedding which clearly cost more than my endeavours as a “creative” earned me in a year, getting blind drunk and kissing a bridesmaid were poor substitute for bringing a meaningful +1.

In an amazing show of solidarity for their unworthy but equally loyal clientele, the tavern paid the three figure sum to have her repaired by a specialist. Despite, or maybe because I couldn't even remember actually doing it, it was a wake up call which finally roused me from my perpetual state of “morning after”. In the intervening years, I've cleaned up my act, found an incredible lady, became a devoted dad, developed a meaningful career, bought a house and a sensible family car. I'm not saying I've been a choirboy – I've also broken bones on a stag do, been thrown in a skip and had an entire hotel in Berlin evacuated, but regular next-day jitters are thankfully a thing of the past.

As my stamina and tolerance for intoxicants decreased with age, lost belongings, lost hours and lost pride took an uptick and the blasé confid.... arrogance of my youth was replaced with the type of niggling self-doubt and post-party anxiety which now drove me nervously back to my local pub / second home that Monday lunchtime to search for my phone and see if anyone required an apology.

The last time I experienced them was nearly six months ago when a friend's 40th birthday celebrations took a turn for the absinthe. Coming round on the sofa at home, clothes strewn on the floor and partner and son now out, my total lack of recollection of the night's end had my nerves a little frayed.

The look on my friend the manager's face when I walked in made me cringe before I even knew why and I soon learned that no amount of Jaeger bombs bought for the staff the night before would quite compensate for the damage I'd later cause. She filled me in on the lowlights while I shrank in my chair. Apparently inspired by my own wild attire (and 24 hours of drinking), I'd gone full feral, attempting the worm whilst diners tried to enjoy their roasts, enthusiastically teaching a confused TV celebrity a snail/squid/velociraptorbased fist-bump (don't ask...) and finally, in my coup de grace, knocking the beloved, antique pub mascot from its plinth on the bar whilst play-wrestling with Coco the pub dog to “prove once and for all who's hardest out of a leopard and alsation”. One of the oldest, most decorated boozers in the country, its pride and joy this ancient stone statuette of a beguiling lady with magnificent lobster claws who's graced the bar since long before the oldest regular was born.... and i'd snapped her fucking head off! I might as well have killed a barmaid.

Where had we finished up? How had I got home? Had I spoken to my family? What had I done? Ringing friends, it seemed yes, we'd been pretty spangled, but a good time was had by all and I'd left of my own volition around 3am on two legs as opposed to all fours, which was something I guess. So why did I feel like I'd done something naughty? My girlfriend wasn't answering her mobile, but I reassured myself that she never bloody does. I checked my clothes - no bloodstains or loyalty cards for brothels... no photos on my phone of passed-out mates with their eyebrows shaved. Maybe middle aged maturity really had snuck up on me. As marmite on toast filled my tummy, I allowed myself to relax. Yes I enjoy a party, but I also have a decent moral compass. I'm too grateful for the love and respect of my friends and family to really jeopardize it, even when paralytic. To use a crude phrase, don't shit where you eat! (I've always said if you're gonna get an entire hotel evacuated, go to Germany to do it!) Notching up another win for the

“hangxiety” experts now recognise as a physiological reality, it seems my grey matter was simply messing with me. As alcohol targets the Gaba (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptor, the brain and central nervous system receive chemical messages inhibiting the activity of nerve cells. The brain calms, less neurons fire and blissful chill / uninhibited debauchery ensues. This de-stressing effect is exacerbated by blocking of glutamate, the brain's main excitatory transmitter. In this state, even shy or typically anxious people begin feeling invincible, but behind the scenes, the brain is panicking and attempting to chemically right the ship. Remove the booze, glutamate spikes, gaba

plummets and you start worrying that that Berlin hotel has a bounty on your head. Add a dose of memory loss into the mix and it's easy to see why so many of us worry unnecessarily the day after a skinful. Research shows already shy or anxious people experience it the worst. In my experience at least, 9 times out of 10, acute hangxiety proved not to be the result of any bad form, but an unpleasant and unfounded symptom of a restless disposition. There was something missing back in my alsation-wrestling days; a hole that's now been filled by my family. As I settled my own nerves that groggy morning six months back I accepted with a somewhat nostalgic sigh I'd clearly left all that hedonism and foolishness behind.... “There's nothing wrong with driving a sensible family car I thought. There's nothing wrong with being 'mature'.... I'll always have Berlin.” And then my fiancé returned from buying a hat....

hese lines are perhaps amongst the most uninspired of any written by one of the greatest Victorian poets, Gerard Manley Hopkins S.J. (1844–89). But as a Jesuit he was, of course, making a point which is often ignored today, particularly in Protestant countries. Having said that, it is often overlooked that the month of May had a specific designation long before either Catholicism or Protestantism were ever thought of.

This is perhaps an answer to Gerard Manley Hopkins! In Ancient Greece and Rome the month was dedicated to Artemis and Flora, goddesses of the Spring and Fertility.

Indeed, Christians publicly followed the worship of Isis as a convenient cover for their true faith. One is reminded of the Jewish “Marranos” in Spain, or the Muslim “Moriscos”.

THE MONTH BECAME A MONTH CELEBRATING LIFE AND MOTHERHOOD.

But perhaps mention of the word “Moriscos”, deriving from the word “Moros” (Moors), enables us to reconcentrate our attention upon the month of May itself. Quite apart from its association with ancient goddesses – it is even named after one, Maia – the month has long been a time of great celebration, particularly in the northern hemisphere.

When Christianity became prominent within the Roman Empire, replacing Paganism, so the attributes of various goddesses became imposed upon the worship of the Virgin Mary. “Both Virgin and Mother” had in the past applied to such deities as Isis, who also rejoiced in the titles “Our Lady”, “Queen of Heaven”, “Star of the Sea”, “Mother of God”. Her cult had been introduced into the Empire by Caligula, and she was the favoured protectress of Vespasian, Titus, Trajan and Hadrian. The name “Isidore”, so common in Spain and the name of perhaps her greatest saint, means “Gift of Isis”. During the persecutions of the Christians at various times during the Empire, it became a simple matter for statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the infant Christ to be disguised as statues of the Mother God Isis with the infant Horus.

In England it was often marked by performances of “Morris” dancing. Shakespeare himself mentions a dance as being “fit as a morris for May Day”. The name is first recorded in the mid15th century as “morisse daunce”, and entered English via the Flemish “mooriske danse”. The deliberately “exotic” flavour of the performance apparently arose as part of a wider 15th-century European fashion for supposedly “Moorish” spectacle. The Great London Chronicle records “spangled Spanish dancers” performing an energetic dance before Henry VII at Christmas of 1494, whilst there is also further mention of “pleying of the mourice dance” four days earlier.

Morris Dancing joined a somewhat older custom at the beginning of May which was often marked by dancing round a “May Pole”. The earliest recorded evidence for this comes from a Welsh poem written by Gryffydd ap Adda ap Dafydd in the mid-14th century, in which he described how people used a tall birch pole at Llanidloes to mark the beginning of spring. The pole is decorated with garlands and long ribbons. Dancers each take a ribbon and dance around the pole in a prescribed pattern until the pole is covered. It may well be that the custom dates back to tree worship, and its joyous nature indicates general thankfulness at the return of spring. The custom did not meet with the approval of the Puritans under Oliver Cromwell. The Long Parliament’s ordinance of 1644 described maypoles as

“A HEATHENISH VANITY, GENERALLY ABUSED TO SUPERSTITION AND WICKEDNESS”,

and the May Pole has had a somewhat rocky history over the years. Be that as it may, the celebrations for May Day marked the end of the harsh winter months. The Anglo-Saxon name for May was “Tri-Milchi”, which means “thrice milked”, in recognition of the fact that the spring grass upon which cattle grazed was now thick enough to enable them to be milked three times a day. Its lush nature also enabled it to collect copious quantities of early morning dew. On the 1st May young maidens would rush out to wash their faces in it to ensure that their complexions remained fresh and beautiful throughout the year. It

was also reputed to remove spots and pimples. Despite this it was also believed that it was unlucky to get married during the month, “Marry in May and you’ll rue the day”, whilst babies born during the month were very likely to be sickly. This unfortunate birth effect extended also to cats who, if born in May, were not only very unlikely to be good rodent operatives, but also very likely to have a penchant for bringing snakes into the house. The good housewife also had to be very careful as to her household duties. “Wash a blanket in May; Wash a dear one away”! Whilst being too personally clean might also cause problems: “Those who bathe in May, Will soon be laid in clay”. Quaint beliefs aside, May 29th was once a very important date in the English calendar, and a public holiday. Even today many monarchists celebrate Charles II’s birthday and his escape from the Roundheads on this day. It is called ‘Oak Apple Day’ in memory of the time when the king hid in “the Boscobel Oak” in the grounds of Boscobel Hall, Staffordshire, following the Battle of Worcester. Thanks to the protection of this tree, Charles was eventually crowned king of Great Britain and Ireland on 29th May 1660; and his supporters celebrated in a manner that would surely have been condemned by Cromwell! The wearing of a sprig of oak on the anniversary of Charles’ crowning showed that a person was loyal to the restored king. Those who refused to wear an oaksprig were often set upon, and children would challenge others to show their sprig or have their bottoms pinched. Consequently, this day became known as “Pinch-Bum-Day.” Subliminally, it is also likely that the royal association conceals a pagan tradition of tree worship.

Last year was a huge year for my family and I; my now husband and I got married in July, we moved house, and embarked on an adventure of a lifetime; a year travelling the world with our three children. Nothing was booked except the first flight out of Spain. South Goa

LIFE IN SOUTH GOA IS GENERALLY SOFT AND SIMPLE. THE SUN SHINES DAILY, THE FOOD HAS DEPTH, THE AROMAS ARE HEADY AND THERE’S A DELICATE FREEDOM IN THE AIR.

ollowing our month in Sri Lanka, the next stop was India. Friends of ours suggested we follow them to Goa and settle in for a month. We flew in from Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, to Bangalore and then a domestic flight to Goa. From here our destination, or home for a month was Patnem, a small village near the larger more touristic area of Palolem in South Goa. We found a place to rent for the month, which on arrival seemed like a bit of a strangely located skeletal offering, but as we got accustomed to our new surroundings, realising we could walk everywhere (three minutes to the beach and village) and came to understand that no long term rentals offer crockery or a cup to drink from, we managed to turn it into a home. For holiday purposes there are plenty of beachfront resorts to stay in here but if you’re looking for upscale or luxury, the choices are limited. Most accommodation

is relatively basic, but you can find some really cute, affordable apartments literally on the beach next to all the restaurants, bars and shops. Everything works on the season here, quite literally when we arrived the beachfront properties, being mainly wooden constructs, were not yet finished as they are taken down and reconstructed every year for the main season. This area doesn’t offer the party scene that usually resonates with mentions of Goa, here you can guarantee a peaceful night’s sleep and plenty of early risers. In fact I think they banned loud music and partying has depth, the aromas are heady and in this region of Goa to prevent that there’s a delicate freedom in the air. scene developing. as visitors balance their chakras and get in touch with the energy of India. I often took a morning run, followed by an ocean swim to cool off and a moment on a rock to meditate and prepare for the day. Then off to the bakery to sit and get some work done while feasting on local delicacies; fruit, banana bread and chai! Nearby Palolem is the more wellknown area which is further advanced in tourism. There’s a long stretch of roadside shops, selling the local wares, leading to the beach which is a beautiful sweeping bay but quite overrun with restaurants, bars and people. This is more the younger couples type destination whereas Patnem feeds the family crowd, especially those staying longer term. If you head a little further south you’ll find some practically untouched beaches, where development’s claws have not yet managed to pierce. Rajbaga, Talpona, are Balgibag beaches are quiet and undeveloped, though a highway is creeping its way along and soon a bridge will connect this currently unspoilt corner of Goa to the rest of India! Just north of Palolem you’ll find Agonda, a hip spot to hang where you may occasionally find some surf, but nothing to write home about. The beach is beautiful,and the boutique shops and cafes are raising the game for the area. Cows, being sacred, are free to walk the streets, or lie right in the middle of the road, the beach, wherever they want; we must simply swerve them and leave them to do their thing. They can startle you on your way home when you forgot your torch; amazing how you can miss noticing a huge cow standing in your

path, not fun walking right into it! Our days always involved time at the beach, making its purpose known as our back garden, playground and meeting place. The post-school gatherings, the temperature and sun strength, the lazy sunlight of the afternoon often all gave way to staying on at one of the beach restaurants for drinks and food with whoever we had happened to run into that day. These meals were an extravagance, being on a travellers budget rather than on vacation, so we tried to keep this to a minimum but it was hard to refuse watching yet another sunset and lounging on a bean bag with a cold Kingfisher beer! Still far cheaper than eating out in Spain, but to compare, one of the local eateries could feed our family of five for less than ten euros and this would set us back up to 30! Local people are friendly and warm yet looking to make a dollar or two. It’s haggle culture here, and there’s a lot of interaction when you’re walking around in an attempt to lure you into their shop “come look my shop madam” being a frequent heckle. There’s no aggression whatsoever, just gentle manipulations to try to get you to put your hand in your pocket. I’ll never forget the smell of Goa, in a good way! Snaking through the roads

to go exploring on the moped while the kids were in school, feeling the soft, warm wind and noting the natural earthy aromas was a soothing and peaceful moment in the day. It makes me feel almost sleepy and warm just thinking about it. Stopping at little local roadside places to try their vegetable thali of the day (a tray of varied individual dishes generally including rice, dal, vegetables, roti, papad, dahi, chutney, pickle and something sweet, all for about 2€ a head) was the best thing since sliced bread. The expat community here is strong, there are all sorts of folk making this place their home for a few months a year, some more permanently. I was asked frequently whether I was there “for the season” as is common practice for many. It would be easy to slip into a life here, though for us it wasn't what

we were looking for at this moment, plus if the surf isn’t epic, then life isn't worth living apparently! There are excursions and things to do here as well as soaking up the beach life. We took an evening boat ride with a local fisherman, through a friend of a friend, to ride out and see the phosphorescence.

Gliding through the pitch black was a little daunting but relaxing at the same time as you realised this man does this every single night to go and check on his nets and haul in the catches of the day. We reached an area where we could see nothing but the nearby rocks and stopped to jump off the boat and watch the glowing algae fizz all around us. My son was the first one in and it really was quite an amazing sight to see him surrounded by ocean glitter. You can also go dolphin watching which consists of two guys taking you out in their boat one spotting, the other driving, shouting out when they see one, bombing it over to the potential sighting and hanging quietly in the hope to see it. It worked though, we saw quite a few oddly hanging out individually. One of the best parts of this trip was being by a local fishing boat while about eight men were standing in the boat facing us while they hauled in their net, singing merrily while they worked. It was almost a chant, and it was enchanting as the sun was setting, and the birds were circling, while they quite literally sang for their supper.

What's that Grape in my glass? The other night I cracked open a bottle of Regent wine. That’s not the brand, not the name of the winery, but the name of a relatively new grape, which was given to this varietal (meaning single grape) wine. You’ve probably never heard of it – I picked up the bottle while visiting Zurich.

It’s a German grape, an early hybrid from a whole new class of diseaseresistant grapes known as Piwis, a shortened version of the German name. This is big business, about to grow much bigger as European agricultural research laboratories race to get their new grapes on the market. It takes about 20 years with modern methods to develop a new grape variety, and then growers need to try it in the real world. Regent, was developed by German researchers in 1967 and released to growers in 1997. Swiss and Dutch researchers geared up in the 1990s, French and Italians at the turn of this century. I’m now drinking 21st century newcomer grapes Solaris, Divico and the really lovely light gold, fruity and dry white Divona, released last October and named after the Celtic goddess of spring. In southern France you might find your café carries Rebelia, Recybel or Reclia. Italy? Try whites Fleurtai, Soreli, or the red Cabernet Eidos or Merlot Kanthus, introduced as Italy’s first new Piwi wines in 2016.

WINE DRINKERS, WINEMAKERS: BOTH WANT TO CUT CHEMICAL USE Whoa, why would anyone switch from that old familiar and beloved Syrah or Chardonnay to these wines with no history and often oddball names and mixed reviews? They are being called the future of wine - keep in mind that the history of wine is a continuum of new grapes arriving on the scene. Today we have more than 10,000 wine grapes worldwide, although most are hyper-local, produced in minuscule amounts – enough for you and me. Wine Grapes, the encyclopedic reference book by British wine writer Jancis Robinson et al, lists 1,368 of the most common grapes. Most of the new Piwi grapes are not even listed because the book was published in 2012 and they were not yet out.

New grape varieties were once the domain of Mother Nature, with spontaneous crossings occurring in vineyards and fields. Growers, and later professional nurseries, became adept at creating crossings. Climate change has pushed us to look for new varieties that work better in cold northern climates as they warm up enough to grow grapes. Diseases have been widely treated chemically for the past 80 years but as concern grows today about the use of herbicides and pesticides, the race is on to develop diseaseresistant grape varieties. Vineyards account for only about 3.3% of Europe’s farmland, but they use more than 65% of the fungicides. Wine producers are keen to cut down on chemicals from concern for their own health and the toll they see taken on soil after 30 years of treatments. Organic growers with traditional grape varieties treat their vines with non-herbicide plant protection products 6 to 15 times a year, depending on their location, a burden in terms of labour and therefore cost.

Enter the new grapes. Switzerland’s Divico was introduced in 2013, the first grape to be multi-resistant to all three of Europe’s main fungal problems; it cuts down hugely on the need for treatments in the vineyard and it’s better for everyone’s health and less costly. On the other hand, winemakers ask, how do you make wine from it? And there is the rub, for a grape like Syrah has been around for a couple hundred years. We’ve had time to learn how to make good wine from it, discarding methods that leave you with plonk. Some French growers are sceptical about the new grapes. Château Guiraud coowner Xavier Planty, chairman of the Sauternes appellation area, told Vitisphere magazine that “the basis of appellations of origin is the suitability of a site and a native grape variety that has been selected locally down through the ages… It is continuity through the ages that forms the basis of the AOC. Disease-resistant varieties come from nowhere. If we switch to them, the brand is dead.”

Enter the consumer. What do you like in your glass of wine, besides that nice little buzz. I tasted Divico red wines this week, 35 of them, and I came home with mixed reactions but enormous respect for the cellars that are experimenting with making these wines: stainless steel tanks or oaking it in barrels, using the grape on its own or blending it with others. Our experience with these wines is in its infancy. I loved six of these: gorgeous deep purple, black fruit and spice aromas, a smooth mouthfeel with rich body. On the down side, the purple seemed to seep everywhere, including onto my lips and teeth and in particular my hands after pouring several wines. We’re learning that they need more time to develop and for all the parts to come together. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither were our favourite wines. We’re not likely to give up on them, but we might want to encourage wineries to do as their forebears did and keep improving wines from new grapes.
