PUBLISHER’S LETTER Society Marbella published by

uperstar Rita Ora has achieved in the past year what most of us would only dream of in a lifetime. This previous shop assistant went from stacking shelves to recording number one singles after being spotted by a talent scout whilst gigging at KoKo in Camden, London. The Sylvia Young Theatre School (where Amy Winehouse and Emma Bunton also studied) alumni then jetted out to New York to meet Jay Z and was instantly signed to his label Roc Nation. This month SOCIETY MARBELLA had the pleasure of not only featuring the hottest star on the planet on our cover, but also managed to steal a moment of her time for an EXCLUSIVE interview, turn to this months’ Celebrity Spotlight to find out Rita’s plans for the future and what it’s really like to have Jay Z as a boss! Marbella is truly attracting the rich and famous this summer, following the filming of The Only Way in Marbs, James ‘Arg’ Argent was SPOTTED partying at the opening celebrations at Aqwa Mist, Ex-football manager, Harry Redknapp dined in hotspot La Sala and Hollyoaks actress Jennifer Metcalf enjoyed a few days of relaxation at Sala Beach. This month’s Who’s In, Who’s Out captured Premiership footballers David Bentley and Stephen Carr celebrating at new American diner Route 66 and Sala Beach’s legendary White and Gold Party. The Apprentice star Liz Locke also returned to Marbella this year and was SPOTTED continuing the celebrations at the official Sala Beach afterparty at Aqwa Mist. London 2012 is the next worldwide event to swamp our calendar; for SOCIETY MARBELLA’s predictions of who to watch, turn to page 32 to find out who is going for gold. If you are wondering where Marbella would excel in the Games, check out Giles Brown’s humourous outlook on the Puerto Banus 100m sprint and the Costa del Sol’s adapted event schedule. If you are looking for the perfect beach ensemble for showing off to the crowds, look no further than this months EXCLUSIVE photo shoot, Heat Wave, shot by the coast’s most sought after photographer Jorge Mier-Teran. Julie Munequita and Myrthe van Ederen modelled a vibrant collection of swim and beachwear from local boutiques The Edit at Sala Beach and the newly online based Daisy Boutique. In May SOCIETY MARBELLA announced the devastating news surrounding Bundo the lion. Eager to help, local restaurant Small World Café organised a charity dinner to raise money for the animal’s required eye operation; a raffle, live entertainment, fashion show and dinner raised over €4,000 for Zoo de Castellar, home to Bundo, €1,000 over the cost to save the little lions life. Turn to page 96 to see the photographs of the impressive event. Small World Café, SOCIETY MARBELLA and Zoo de Castellar would like to thank everyone who donated and attended the event and are pleased to announce Bundo has now had his operation and is on the road to recovery. If you want to learn more about Castellar turn to page 148 for a review of this impressive sanctuary. Until next time… Andy Clark

Society Pinboard A round up of the month’s events

RitaOra I

n the past year Rita Ora has achieved two number one hits, sat next to Gary Barlow on The X Factor judging table, stolen the fashion idol crown, supported Coldplay and raked up a series of A List pals and co-workers that even Hollywood’s elite would be jealous of. With Jay Z as a boss and Rihanna as a best mate, this ex-shop worker is definitely one to watch. Between filming Good Morning America, touring across Europe and flying back and forth across the Atlantic, Rita had the chance to catch up with Features Editor, Christie Holland to discuss her debut album and what the future holds for this stylish superstar.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

This month we turn the spotlight on Jay Z’s protégé, Rita Ora

21

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

CH: Hi Rita, congratulations on your success so far, what is the message behind your hit single R.I.P? RO: Be a strong woman! Take control and get what you want! The old me maybe didn’t do that as much as I should have. CH: What can we expect from your debut album, and more importantly when can we expect to hear it? RO: In the Autumn! It’s going to be a mixture of my different influences from music growing up in London - there’s a bit of pop, urban, underground, grit, soul; all of it! CH: You are currently supporting Coldplay on tour, how is it going? RO: I love it! I get to support one of my favourite bands and perform to 60,000 people every time; it’s amazing. I have to say such a big thanks to Coldplay!

22

CH: What is it like working with big names like Tinie Tempah? RO: Amazing! Tinie is the king of cool, really mysterious, everyone wants a bit of Tinie! CH: How is Jay Z as a boss? RO: Just like any other boss! He tells you when you are doing good and bad, and he offers me invaluable experience! He’s like the CEO of how to be a cool artist. I respect him a lot, he’s an amazing influence - I’m a fan first.

week and signed me! It all happened very fast. CH: You have a very distinct style, when did you become a blonde? RO: I highlighted two strands of my hair when I was 16, and consequently ended up slowly going all the way blonde! CH: And the trademark red lipstick, how did that develop? RO: Red lipstick glams up everything! Maximum effect with minimum effort hahaha!

CH: Who would you say are your idols? RO: I would have to say Beyonce, JayZ, Sade, Madonna and Gwen Stefani.

CH: Who would you say are your favourite designers? RO: Alexander Wang, Vivienne Westwood, Cavalii, loads of British designers!

CH: What kind of music do you like? RO: All types, everything from pop and urban, to soul and RnB.

CH: And who’s fashion style do you admire? RO: I would say Daphne Guinness and Gwen Stefani, they are both really unique.

CH: Marina and the Diamonds is also touring with you, are you a fan? RO: Yes - for sure her voice is so beautiful and angelic.

CH: Did you always know you wanted to be a singer? RO: Yes, ever since I was Cinderella in my school play when I was 11.

CH: What were you doing this time last year? RO: Recording my album!

CH: How were you spotted by Roc Nation? RO: By an AnR in London. She put me on the phone to Roc Nation; they then flew me over to New York the following

CH: Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us. What can we expect from you in the next twelve months? RO: Music and loads of fun! CH: And 20 years? RO: That’s way too far ahead to even think about! I just want people to still want to listen to my music.

TOP TEN

snippets from the world of entertainment.

What to see, what to watch and what not to miss!

Nº1

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

One of our favourite characters is back on our screens for a new chapter in The Spider-Man legacy. Focusing on an untold tale that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the newest installment stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film revolves around Peter Parker, who finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young. His path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner.

Nº2 FORTUNE BY CHRIS BROWN

Grammy Award winner Chris Brown is back with his eagerly anticipated new album Fortune. Chris enlisted Nas, Big Sean and Wiz Khalifa to assist on his newest release; fans were introduced to the first track from the album, ‘Turn up the Music’, and its accompanying remix earlier this year which featured Mr Brown’s ex-girlfriend, superstar Rihanna. The standard version of the album boasts 15 tracks including previous singles ‘Turn Up The Music’ and ‘Sweet Love’, and recent offerings ‘Till I Die’ and ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’. Meanwhile, the Deluxe Edition includes four additional tunes.

Nº3

JUDGMENT CALL BY J.A. JANCE

Nº4

Nº5

The New York Times bestselling master of mystery and suspense, J.A. Jance, whom the Chattanooga Times ranks ‘among the best, if not the best’, brings back her enormously popular series protagonist, Cochise County Sheriff Joanna Brady. With Judgment Call, Jance achieves a new high in crime fiction, as Brady wrestles with her conflicting roles of law officer and mother when her daughter discovers the murdered body of the local high school principal, and the ensuing investigation reveals secrets no parent wants to hear. At once a breathtaking recreation of the rugged landscape of the American Southwest, a moving story of a mother’s concerns for her endangered child, and thrilling masterwork of brutal crime and expert detection, Judgment Call is prime J.A. Jance, a treat for anyone who loves a good cop story wrapped around a superior family drama.

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: DOG DAYS

Based on author and cartoonist Jeff Kinney’s third and fourth Wimpy Kid books, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days continues the story of Greg Heffley. Now that school is finished, Greg is ready for the days of summer, however when all his plans go wrong, it appears he may have to spend an entire summer with his family; what could be more boring? This fun adventure is guaranteed to delight and entertain all ages.

WILD ONES BY FLO RIDA

Flo Rida is proud to present his fourth studio album Wild Ones. Singer Chris Brown collaborated with Flo Rida on a series of the album’s tracks and assisted throughout the production phase. The album was originally entitled; Only One Rida (Part 2), a twist on his third album, Only One Flo (Part 1), however Flo Rida subsequently changed his mind and rebranded the album with its current title. In addition to Chris Brown, American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez, Lil Wayne, LMFAO and Mexican singer Anahi also all feature on the new release.

The crew strives to win a contest for a major sponsorship opportunity, but soon Emily’s father (Peter Gallagher) threatens to develop MOB’s historic neighbourhood and displace thousands of people. Kathryn McCormick who plays Emily, shot to fame after starring in the sixth season of So You Think You Can Dance.

THE WURST IS YET TO COME BY MARY DAHEIM

With its cozy atmosphere, delicious fare, and gracious hostess, Hillside Manor is the perfect B&B for a few days of R&R. However, it also features the occasional corpse or two. But is a small (if growing) body count any reason for the state to yank Judith McMonigle Flynn’s innkeeper’s license? Exhausted from being hassled by the state B&B association’s meddling critics, Judith warily accepts the assignment of manning a booth during Oktoberfest in the mountain aerie of Little Bavaria. With her reluctant cousin Renie in tow, she hopes to win some allies, solicit new guests, and keep her inn not only open, but prosperous. The last thing she needs is another homicide to sully her reputation. But before the beer begins flowing, Judith finds a body. Fleeing the scene before the cops arrive, she vows that this time she will not get involved. The local police chief begs her to help solve the death of the beloved town patron, nonagenarian Dietrich Wessler. Caught between a wurst and a hard place, Judith hits on a brilliant idea; Renie will pose as the sleuth. What could possibly go wrong?

Nº7

POWER AND CONTROL BY MARINA ANDTHE DIAMONDS Marina and The Diamonds is back with her new single, Power and Control, following her top ten single, Primadonna. ‘Power and Control’, written with Steve Angello from Swedish House Mafia and produced by Greg Kurstin, will be the next single to come from ‘Electra Heart’ and will be released on July 9. With intellectual but witty lyrics about the pains of romance backed by eerily fun, electro synths, ‘Power and Control’ is a perfect track to showcase ‘Electra Heart’, an honest story of identity, love, rejection, doomed romance and hope all tinged with humour and British eccentricity.

Nº8

15 SECONDS BY ANDREW GROSS

Nº10 26

Henry Steadman, a successful surgeon, is divorced but on good terms with his ex-wife and remains very active in his daughter’s life. However when an out-of-town traffic stop goes violently wrong, the cop who was about to arrest Henry is shot repeatedly, and the killer escapes the scene. To all the witness’ eyes, he had the perfect motive to murder the cop. He seeks help from his only friend in the area, but what he finds there seals his fate. His friend has been butchered and Henry now knows someone is framing him for a double murder. A state-wide man-hunt is ordered, only one person believes Henry; sympathetic state-trooper Carrie, who has seen her fair share of tragedy. As Henry frantically figures out who would want to frame him, Carrie tries to keep the faith as more incriminating evidence against Henry surfaces. The trail of set-ups leads them to another father on a twisted path to revenge, and Henry must face up to just what it is he’s been a part of…

FLIGHT FROM BERLIN BY DAVID JOHN

Nº9

A cynical English reporter and a beautiful, headstrong American Olympic hopeful are caught in a lethal game of international espionage during the 1936 Berlin Olympics in Flight from Berlin, a riveting debut thriller from breakout novelist David John. Combining the suspense and atmosphere of Alan Furst’s spy novels with the exciting narrative drive of Daniel Silva’s Gabriel Allon adventures, John delivers an unforgettable masterwork of thrilling suspense set against the backdrop of one of the most monumental summers in history, a contest of champions, including the remarkable Jessie Owen, that captivated the world as the specter of Nazi Germany continued its rise to threaten the globe.

FRANCISCO VALENCIA, LÍNEA DIRECTA’S CORPORATE GOVERNANCE DIRECTOR

“When a car has been written off, you have the chance to give customers back the trust that they have placed in you.” An accident in which a car has been written off is always the worst kind, because it implies the disappearance of the insured car. Francisco Valencia, Línea Directa’s Corporate Governance Director, describes the quality measures taken by his company, a leading insurance company for foreigners. Losing your vehicle in a foreign country is undoubtedly a major setback for anybody. What makes Línea Directa different from other companies? First of all, the personalised service. Línea Directa offers customer service in English and German over the telephone, and also acts as an intermediary and translator with garages and scrap merchants. In addition to this, we also offer different cover options which no other insurer offers, such as our amount of compensation, which is never below €1,000, or when appropriate, double the price paid by customers for their insurance.

You also have a purchasing centre if customers wish to acquire a new vehicle after theirs has been written off. At Línea Directa, we believe that when a car has been written off, it is an opportunity to give customers back the trust that they have placed in you. As a result, if customers ask us to, we take care of all the processes involved in buying a new vehicle in their name, including the paperwork and delivery of the vehicle to their home address.

Finally, how does Línea Directa pay compensation? Línea Directa is committed to paying compensation within 40 days at the very most, although the average waiting time is always much less. If the car is less than two-years-old, either we pay its value when new in compensation or we take care of all the processes involved in purchasing another vehicle. In addition, if the car is between two and threeyears-old, we offer 15% more than its official value as a quality measure.

It’s been an exciting year for Alyson Hannigan; not only did she reunite with her American Pie costars, she also welcomed a beautiful baby girl. The How I Met Your Mother star and her husband Alexis Denisof have named their second daughter Keeva Jane, and both are said to be doing well. The 38-year-old actress recently told Us magazine that, “[Being a mother] has changed me in every way because my life is so much greater.” SOCIETY MARBELLA sends our congratulations to Alyson and Alexis.

Adam Sandler dead? No,

just the Internet up to its old tricks. Prank site Global Associated News recently reported the funny man to have died in a tragic snowboarding accident in Zermatt, Switzerland. The insane website allows users to insert a famous person’s name into its generator and create a celebrity death headline. Over the years this ludicrous invention has been responsible for the ‘deaths’ of the likes of Eddie Murphy, Owen Wilson, Denzel Washington and Ryan Gosling. Fortunately Mr Sandler is in full health, but who will be next!?

Paris Jackson, daughter

of the late Michael Jackson, has revealed what it is really like to be the daughter of the most famous musician in the world in a recent interview with Oprah. Paris explained, “The social life has gotten better. I mean there’s drama, but I try to stay away from that at school and some people try to cyber bully me. They try to get to me with words, but that doesn’t really work.” The 14-year-old continued, “A lot of people don’t like me. I don’t know what it is. If I feel someone’s being fake to me, I will just push away.” Despite the difficulties she faces, the young star’s spirits lifted when discussing her career. “Acting’s always been my passion. I just love it and I think that it’s amazing.” I am sure we will be seeing this famous face on the big screen in the not too distant future!

With all the negativity surrounding Kim and Kanye’s relationship, Miss Kardashian must have thought she needed to pull something out the bag to prove she was worthy of her beau, and she certainly did. The 31-yearold reality TV star forked out $750,000 for a brand new matt-black Lamborghini for her lover. In addition, to continue the birthday celebrations Kim headed to Dublin for the Irish leg of Kanye’s ‘Watch the Throne’ tour, tweeting, “Hi, Dublin, Ireland!”

Following her nuptials this year, actress Drew Barrymore has decided to take the next step on her life journey by becoming a mother. During her honeymoon, the new Mrs. Kopelman was spotted shopping for baby items. An eyewitness told press, “Drew was dressed down and super low key. She was very friendly and smiling at other mums-to-be in the store. She was looking at baby girl clothes and car seat gear, but she didn’t end up buying anything. She was just enjoying browsing with her new husband. They didn’t say much to each other, but they were holding hands and pointing things out that they thought were cute.”

She has since starred in Bionic Women with Michelle Ryan, Privileged and Scream 4, as well as a series of guest roles. Lucy released a statement following her exciting news stating, “I’m overjoyed and honoured to become a member of the Hollywood Records family. I’ve admired the careers they’ve made and can’t wait to see how my musical path is paved out. I’d just like to thank Ken Bunt [Executive Vice President of Disney Music Group] and everyone involved for giving me the chance to show a whole different side of myself, which is a huge passion for music.” The star then went onto share the news with her Twitter fans tweeting, “It’s going to be different from anything you’ve ever heard from the label and not what you’d expect from me. TOWIE favourite Sam Faiers has accomplished something most people only dream about, and no I don’t mean starring in a BAFTA award winning TV show or dating Joey Essex. Miss Faiers has beaten Mr Simon Cowell, that’s right; the Essex Princess knocked Mr Cowell right off his top spot on the book charts. Sam celebrated by sending Simon a cheeky tweet, “Just a quick tweet @SimonCowell to say…I know it doesn’t happen v often but I’m pleased to say I have knocked you off the No 1 spot! One of the most visited cities in the world, the UK capital is immersed in history and culture. Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and The Tower of London all ooze antiquity and momentous grandeur, the latter offers an insight into the gruesome and fascinating historical memories the city beholds. In the early 1980’s, William the Conqueror built an extraordinary stone tower in the centre of his London fortress. Throughout the centuries that followed, monarchs added to his masterpiece, resulting in the monument you see today. To commence your Tower of London experience, sample the free guided tour to access the best that this architectural gem has to offer. One way to ensure you don’t miss any of London’s cultural highlights is to catch The Original London Sightseeing Tour; Hop on, Hop off. Nestled aboard an open top bus, you will see all the sights and avoid getting caught up in the crowds. These famous red doubledecker buses travel the streets of London and are an economical way to see the city. Gaze at the celebrity figurines within Madame Tussauds, get one step closer to The Royal Family at Buckingham Palace and absorb the beauty of St Paul’s Cathedral. London’s creative milieu ensures the capital city is adorned and embellished with an array of original works of art. The Natural

History museum itself, designed by Alfred Waterhouse, is as impressive as the towering dinosaur skeleton within the Central Hall.

Looking for a way to get out of the rain? Then this intriguing gallery should be at the top of your list. If you’re more David Hockney than David Attenborough, head to the Tate Modern on the other side of the river. Home to the wacky and wonderful, this outstanding collection has successfully shared challenging work with the masses and become one of London’s most popular cultural destinations.

London offers an array of world-class restaurants in its repertoire; from exquisite Japanese cuisine at Nobu to outstanding Italian gastronomy at Cipriani in Mayfair and new style Chinese at Hakkasan. In 2012, Dinner By Heston Blumenthal was awarded the 9th best eatery in the world, a new entry for the accomplished chef and the highest new entry of 2012, standing alongside the famed Noma in Denmark and Per Se in New York in the top ten of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Located in the Mandarin Oriental in Hyde Park, Dinner is based on the concept of reworking British recipes from as far back as the 14th century. Sample mandarintinged, super smooth creamy chicken liver parfait of the meat fruit or the sweet fluffy indulgence of the Sauternes-soaked tipsy cake. Historic British gastronomy at its best. Before arriving in London, you will be faced with the biggest decision of your visit, where

them some of the world’s most desirable locations, whilst the chic and stylish influx of boutique designer hotels attract the young and fabulous. The St Martins Lane Hotel is a dramatic and daring reinvention of the urban resort. Legendary architect Phillippe Starck’s collision of modern and baroque creates an energizing, sophisticated aura whilst the vibrant location at the hub of Covent Garden makes this gem one the fashion crowd’s favourite hotspots. A rich contrast, The Milestone Hotel, part of The Red Carnation Group, a 19th-century architectural treasure, is ideally located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and in close proximity to Knightsbridge, home to Harvey Nichols and the world’s most famous department store, Harrods. This truly has it all; from haute couture to pet accessories, this striking store continues to amaze and astound visitors with first-class service, retail therapy and product quality, not to mention its incomparable international brand selection. Originally opening as a grocer and tea merchant in 1834, Harrods continues to go from strength to strength, guided by its philosophy ‘anything is possible’.

into St Christopher’s Place packed with a diverse offering of restaurants, cafés and bars for a much-needed postshopping treat.

In addition to the splendour of Knightsbridge, London is also proud to boast the UK’s favourite high street; Oxford Street. London offers a stimulating and fascinating experience for all; Europe’s largest capital is a powerhouse of commerce, fashion and culture, and if that isn’t reason enough to visit the UK’s capital, this year the city welcomes the 2012 Olympics, as if you didn’t have enough to see!

When evening falls, London comes alive. The West End is renowned

for showcasing the brightest and best musical shows including We Will Rock You; a tribute to the music of Queen, the awardwinning adaptation of Disney’s feature film, The Lion King featuring music by Elton John and Tim Rice, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s epic musical The Phantom of the Opera. An array of famous faces fight to take to the stage and the likes of Girls Aloud’s Kimberly Walsh, Busted’s Matt Willis and X Factor’s Shayne Ward have all graced the spectacular theatres. In addition to musical extravaganzas, London’s O2 Arena welcomes the finest songsters and comedians to the redeveloped Millennium Dome; this year will see the likes of Westlife, Michael McIntyre, Jessie J, Olly Murs, the stars of the hit BBC show The Voice, Jennifer Lopez and One Direction sell out the world famous arena.

his year will see London become the first city to host the modern Olympic Games for the third time, having previously hosted the event in 1908 and 1948. The capital was selected in 2005 during the 117th IOC Session in Singapore, defeating off competition from Moscow, New York City, Madrid and Paris. This year is set to be the first Olympics told in 140 characters or less. 2012 will be the most tweeted, ‘liked’ and tagged Games in history, with viewers being offered an all new insider’s view of what many are calling the ‘socialympics’. During the Sydney Games in 2000, fast internet was rare and not widely used. In Athens 2004, smartphones were not a necessity like they are today. In Beijing, social media had only recently begun, Twitter had about six million users and Facebook, 100 million. Today, the figure is 140 million and 900 million consecutively. This year, the International Olympics Committee (IOC) boasts 760,000 Twitter followers and 2.8 million Facebook fans to whom they will broadcast and host live chats with athletes from inside the Olympic village, whilst allowing the public to post questions via various social media accounts.

32

To complement this new concept, Facebook have launched an ‘Explore London 2012’ page that links users to elite athletes such as Michael Phelps, LeBron James and David Beckham, plus providing additional insight into the history of the Games. The idea was to incorporate everything about this two-week spectacle into one convenient feed: sport, ceremony, celebrity, history and breaking news. It’s not just the main event that the social media world have grabbed with both hands, the run up to the Olympics is just as tweet-worthy with predictions of who will make the final cut, and who will be topping the podium, splashed across the cyber world. This month SOCIETY MARBELLA pinpoints who to keep your eye on in the quest for gold, and who could be missing out of their winning dream. 26-year-old British born track and field athlete Jessica Ennis specialises in multi-eventing disciplines and the 100m hurdles; she is also the former world indoor pentathlon champion. She jointly holds the British record in the high jump at 1.95m; 30cm higher than her own height, a feat only six high jumpers worldwide have ever

bettered. With

her face plastered around the world as the poster girl for the 2012 Olympics, this female athlete is predicted to continue her run of success.

Scottish gymnast Daniel Keating competed for team GB in Beijing in 2008 where he finished in the 9th spot and really began to shine. The aspiring Olympian then won the silver medal at the 2009 European Championships, making him Britain’s first ever all-round medalist in a major competition. Daniel is now doing everything he can to ensure he is picked for one of the crucial places on the British team; with such steady growth, we are sure this Scot will be making waves at this summer’s Games.

A predicted shoe-in for gold this summer, Novak Djokovic could be faced with a struggle after his disappointing play at the French Open. With a few tournaments to prepare for before the London

games, Djokovic is looking to rebound at the All England Club. However, it will not be easy for the No.1 seed, with several players hot on his heels he could face a tough time ahead. His recent inconsistent play showcased his vulnerability, and doubts emerged stating that the gold medal is not a guarantee. Spain’s left-handed Rafael Nadal aka ‘Rafa’ was a sensation in 2008 and 2009, and became the first left-hander to finish No.1 since John McEnroe in 1984. He is currently ranked No.2 in the world, and won four grand slam titles in a single season in 2010. More recently, he blew everyone away at the French Open, not dropping a single set until the final. Is the two-time, former Wimbledon champion out to prove that he is ready to restore his tennis domination? It’s not only the big guns we need to keep our eyes on, players such as

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, David Ferrer, Tommy Haas and Nicolas Mahut

are all experienced veterans who are capable of springing an upset whilst the younger generation including John Isner, Milos Raonic and Andreas Seppi will be hoping to prove they can hang with the big names. On the women’s side, three-time gold medallist Venus Williams is hoping to become a fourtime Olympian adding to her singles win in the 2000 Games and doubles win in 2000 and 2008 Games.

“The Olympics is just the ultimate in sports,” she said at the French Open. “I grew up watching those documentaries. My dad had us watch those. It was his dream for us to play there. Once I got a taste of it, it was just amazing. Every time I leave the Olympics, I go through withdrawals. It’s the pinnacle of sports. I love it there.”

American swimmer Michael Phelps is back for a final go. After making history in Beijing, Phelps experienced an interesting next few years; from the infamous pictures of him smoking a bong, to breaking four world records at the 2009 World Championships, but with the announcement of his retirement after 2012, there is no way this champion will be searching for anything other than more gold this summer. We all love a story and USA’s Lopez Lomong certainly has that; previously one of the ‘Lost Boys of Sudan’, Lomong became a citizen of the US in 2007 only one year before competing for America at Beijing four years ago. He was chosen to carry the U.S. flag at the opening ceremonies in Beijing, and was a symbol of resilience for the U.S. Since then, Lomong has become one of the top distance-runners in the country, and his personal best of 3.32.20 minutes in the 1,500-meter run is only six seconds off the world record. After reaching the semi-finals four years ago, a determined Lomong will return and no doubt up his game this year. Another American we predict big things for is 15-year-old Kyla Ross. While most teenagers are planning what to wear to the beach this summer, Kyla has her eyes set on one thing; London. Ross has competed in the Junior Pan American Games, the U.S. Junior National Championships and the Pacific Rim Championships Junior Division, where she won medals in all competitions. This all-around competitor has a shot to make the U.S. National Team; a serious competitor, she is ready to take the next step. It’s the Olympics and anything can happen. We all know the recurring champions will be back wanting to reclaim their crowns but be warned, at any moment, someone can slip and one of the wily veterans or new class of rising stars can enter the big stage. Let the Games begin!

lympic fever will have well and truly gripped the world at the end of July as the London Olympics finally gets under way. It promises to be an unforgettable spectacle with the world’s finest athletes gathering together in this pinnacle of sporting excellence. In addition to this, London is looking forward to the economic benefits, not because of the regeneration of huge swathes of East London, but the marketing opportunities that will spring up when David Beckham decides to captain the Team GB football side. Trust me, this is going to happen. Otherwise we might end up with the prospect of Craig Bellamy leading out the squad, and call me old fashioned, but he doesn’t really spring to mind when you consider the Olympic values of fair play, gentlemanly conduct and respect for the opposition. Unless Mongolia are delving back into their past and modelling their Olympic squad on Gengis Khan. It was while pondering the Mongolians (as you do) and other smaller nations

that will be at the Olympics this year that the thought occurred to me. When Marbella finally declares independence from the rest of Spain, and after years of ‘management’ from the Town Hall of Gil, Muñoz and Roca, Madrid has rightly regarded Marbella as a Banana Republic for over a decade now. What events could the brave new nation expect to win medals in at the Olympics and what new events would the organisers have to sanction so that Marbella had a sporting chance? Located as it is on the sparkling shores of the Mediterranean, you would think that Marbella would be in with a fair chance of a medal in one of the sailing events. Unfortunately though, most of the action on the waters off Marbella takes two forms. The introduction of the five kilometre superyacht/floating gin palace cruise could see Marbella take a medal, especially if the crews had to moor outside Nikki Beach and pick up a dingy full of bimbos in the shortest possible time. Then of

course there is the excitement of the 14 kilometre moonlight contraband dash across the Straits in a stripped down powerboat. Marbella’s biggest opposition in this event would be expected to come from Morocco, Gibraltar and of course the Guardia Civil. Strangely enough, swimming doesn’t feature highly in the list of events that Marbella would expect to do well in. Although the town boasts an impressive range of beach clubs, very few people actually swim in the pools, possibly down to the recent admission of one of the TOWIE girls that when she frequents a champagne spray party in Marbella, she preferred to pee in the pool rather than queue for the ladies. Charming. Talking of the spray parties however, Marbella could expect to pick up medals for champagne spraying, and judging by the amount of powder and rolled up notes left in the cubicles, downhill ‘skiing’….

Then there is track and field. Marbella could expect to bring home a host of medals in the Blue Riband events of 100 and 200 metres. You only have to clock the speed the Lookie Lookie men sprint out of Banus when the Policia Local are doing a spot check to realise there is a wealth of talent out there. The same also goes for the girls that work the second line. If you’ve ever watched the speed and teamwork that those ‘ladies of negotiable virtue’ employ in getting a leg over when they spot a group of drunken golfers, all the while wearing towering heels, you’ll realise that they are naturals for the 4x100 metres hurdles.

Other events would require small changes, such as the Pole Vault becoming the Pole Dance, and the Women’s Triathlon comprising of Sunbed, Fake Tan and Vajazzle. Marbella could be expected to do well in the shooting events obviously, but only in the ‘drive by’ and ‘automatic weapons’ categories. With this wealth of medals gained, the only final point to consider is the anthem to be played. Although Bambolero and the Benny Hill theme, plus Spandau Ballet’s Gold were all considered, in the end I decided on any song from George Benson. After all, he’s played here enough times to be put in charge of composing the Marbella Anthem!

RED BLOODED WOMAN

L

ast month, we were following Helen as she was preparing for her surgeries. However, during a preoperative routine blood test, it showed Helen was low on red blood cells, so Dr. Kai Kaye from Ocean Clinic suggested she returned a few days later after seeing a blood specialist and to start a treatment of iron tablets. After more tests, Helen was diagnosed with Anemia. This is where the body doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells, which provide oxygen to body tissues. This causes the sufferer to experience fatigue, problems concentrating and a pale skin colour. There is no way of knowing how long Helen has been Anemic, but she describes, “For as long as I can remember, I’ve always felt tired and lethargic, but I thought that was part of who I am. I just accepted that I was tired most of the time but would just carry on with my day. I thought everyone felt the same as me!” There is no particular cause of Anemia, but it’s common in people whose iron levels are low. The body needs certain vitamins, minerals and nutrients to produce enough red blood cells, and iron

DEFINITIONS Anemia

the decrease in number of red blood cells or less than the normal quantity of hemoglobin in the blood.

37

is one of the most important. Another form is Sickle-Cell Anemia where an abnormal shape of the red blood cell leads to their early destruction. Healthy red blood cells last between 90 and 120 days, and once this time span is complete, your body will naturally produce more. A normal, healthy person will have 14g of hemoglobin in their system; Helen was down to only eight! After a course of tablets, Helen’s blood cell and platelet count rose to the normal healthy amount, and she is now feeling better than ever. “I have so much more energy now, and seeing as my son is staying in Marbella over the summer, I have more energy to spend

time with him. This is another thing I have to thank Marbella Makeover for; not only is it going to change my physical appearance, but it’s literally given me a new lease on life!” This is good news for Dr. Kaye also, because he likes patients to be in the optimum condition before surgery. Due to this small set back, as Society Marbella went to print, Helen’s appointment was scheduled for the end of June, so next issue, we’ll bring you the ins and outs of her body surgeries. oceanclinic.net

ith Helen’s surgeries being pushed back six weeks, it made sense for Mark Dental Clinic to begin with her veneers and crowns. Now that her root canal treatment was complete, and with a gap before her surgeries were due to start, Sam Mark decided to address her top teeth first. To prepare the teeth for the porcelain crowns, her old veneers had to be removed for her teeth to be cleaned. Sam began the treatment by filing and drilling her top teeth for around an hour. Next, it was time to take the impressions of her filed teeth that would be sent to the lab to create her new crowns. It takes in the

region of seven to ten days for her crowns to be returned from the lab, so to protect her filed, sensitive teeth, Sam created temporary crowns that were placed over her existing teeth. This temporary set looks exactly like a set of teeth, and will help shield Helen’s sensitive molars, incisors, premolars and canines until her crowns are ready. Make sure you check out July’s issue to find out how things went with Helen and her new mouth. markdentalclinic.com

W

hen it comes to the cat versus dog debate, I have always been fully in favour of my feline friends. I have never known life without cats, and currently enjoy the mayhem of my three fur babies. However, on one of my regular visits with my partner to the vet with a stray cat, ( I really should take out shares in that place,) a man walked in with a tiny puppy in his arms. Apparently some wretched human being had thrown it out of a car at Central Plaza. While the vet was giving the man directions to the local rescue centre, I was passed the puppy to hold. This terrified bundle of fluff, looked up at me with his sad eyes and my heart just went out to him. I took one look at my partner, who looked as upset as me and, well, let’s just say we walked out of the vets with the stray cat AND the puppy. Having never brought up a dog on my own, it was definitely a learning experience, especially with the breed of dog we had just inherited. Kobi, is half English Bull Terrier and half Podenco. Basically he has a bull terrier face with big rabbit ears. He is so strange looking that people regularly stop and take photos of him. Anyway, after a lot of trial and error, and plenty of research I now have one of the healthiest looking dogs on the coast. People are always commenting on how shiny his coat is and asking me how I have managed to get rid of that dreaded doggy smell. Hence I thought I would share my canine health and beauty tips with you.

NUTRITION

For the first few days Kobi would not eat at all. I used to sit on the floor in tears as he had no energy to move and I really thought we would lose him. I tried everything to make him eat. Eventually, it took my other half’s scrumptious roast chicken,

44

and that was it, we were off. From then on I decided to make his diet as natural as possible. He has chicken and brown rice most days, and three times a week he has tinned pink salmon. Salmon is a fatty fish which is also a good source of omega- 3 fatty acids. These fats support the immune system and can be beneficial for skin and coat health. In addition to this, he has a tablespoon of raw organic coconut oil in his food per day. This helps his skin, immune system, digestion and bones, and the secret to his sweet smell. I am realistic and sometimes there is not time to give your dog home cooked food. A couple of times a week he will have Lily’s Kitchens Organic Dog Food. The smell of normal wet dog food makes me want to gag, but this smells just like baby food. I also use Royal Canin biscuits from the vets.

EXERCISE

Kobi needs two long walks a day or he drives me insane. The added benefit for me is that it makes me do more exercise than I normally would do, so there is really no excuse. There is a nice walk up the nature trail by Aloha Golf Club where I can let him off his lead. I try to take him to the beach as much as possible, as he absolutely loves it. If you see a dog with his head down a giant hole and bum in the air, tail wagging away, it will probably be Kobi. Being a working dog owner, means that I can’t always give him the exercise that

he needs. This is where Doggy Day Care comes in. When needed, they pick Kobi up at 9.30am and drop him off at 5pm. They take him on walks in the mountains and to the beach, another plus is that this allows him to socialise with other dogs. Furthermore, they have a huge area in the campo with toys. I really do not know what I would do without them. Doggy Day Care - 646 904 590.

GROOMING

Twice a month I bath Kobi using Theraneem Organix Pet Shampoo, as normal dog shampoo just seemed to irritate his skin. His coat is incredibly soft and shiny after using this product and he smells gorgeous. I don’t need to cut his nails as he wears them down naturally on his walks. Brushing once a day with a soft brush means we don’t have dog hairs everywhere.

HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PEOPLE

The reason I have put this section in is because the happiness that Kobi gives me is priceless. There is nothing better than coming through the door after a bad day and being greeted by your dog as though you are the greatest thing on earth. He lifts my spirit and comforts me if I am down. He is loyal and loving and a true friend. Hence, now when asked on the dog versus cat debate, I have to say I wouldn’t be without either.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

SOCIETY MARBELLA catches up with ‘the hair artist’ Dom Pastoressa to find out all about his new salon. How did you get involved in the hair dressing industry? It actually started out as just a bit of fun. I was cutting my friends’ hair in my home town Bari, Italy, with no training whatsoever and I kept getting more and more recommendations which is when I really began to believe in myself. I started working in a salon, where I was able to learn all about the trade, but I soon became disheartened. I wanted to open my own company, but I needed to do this in a city that oozed glamour, fashion and creativity. By chance I went on vacation to Marbella and I soon realised it had all the elements that I was looking for. I opened a salon in Vasari, Puerto Banús, but it was not under my name. Although I loved it, I still did not feel complete so I decided to move to London and worked as the manager of the top salon, Gro. There I was really able to spread my wings; working on fashion shows and cutting edge editorial in such a competitive environment gave me all the skills I needed. Now it was time for me to open my true salon. Why did you decide to open your salon in Puerto Banús? I decided on Puerto Banús for a few reasons. I used to style owner of Salt and Pepper Wissal’s hair and when I told him I was looking to open my own salon, he jumped straight in. I was incredibly happy that he had such great belief in my work. We were soon joined by Ryan our third partner, and we all felt that Banús would be the perfect location. There is easy parking, a good atmosphere and the location attracts clients, who appreciate a personal,

46

quality service. In addition the clients in this region can also be very demanding which is what I love as demanding clients bring out the best in me. What services will you be offering? We will be offering cutting, colouring, restyling, up do’s, bridal styles and extensions using Great Lengths. We will also have a dedicated area for our nail technician. It is very important for me that whatever treatment the clients opt for, they have a relaxing experience and feel good about themselves when they walk out of the door. Tell us about the salon itself... We are aiming for a very modern, high end, luxury finish. Ryan is in charge of the interior design and I am just making sure that all the elements are in the right place to enable me to work my magic. We have heard that you will be stocking a very exclusive range of products... Yes, while working in Florence, Italy, last year I came across the Alfaparf Milano range and fell in love with it, I knew it was the perfect range for my salon.

Alfaparf Milano’s products are created by stylists for stylists and colour artists. It is inspired by the creativity of Milan, the capital of fashion and design, Alfaparf Milano stands out due to its Italian style, refined perfection and attention to detail. I am particularly impressed with ‘Color Wear’ a tone on tone colour, without ammonia. It is perfect for the typical type of hair you get in Marbella, which has been damaged by the sun, sea and sand. This product is non aggressive and very gentle on the hair. What will make Dom Pastoressa stand out from the crowd? My secret is that I really listen to what my customers want. I don’t just do what I think would suit them. However, if someone asked me for pink hair and I really didn’t think it would look good, I would advise them against it. This is why I believe that 99% of my clients return. Today more than ever, I feel that professionalism is not enough. It is necessary to be able to create a salon that matches the clients’ needs. Our salon will be the place to be. My clients will be able to trust me and rely on me. The key to success is to constantly keep reinventing myself, learning, growing and providing the best service possible.

nail system that will not chip or damage your nails, protecting and strengthening the natural nail in the process. You know us, we adore anything that actually improves the condition of the skin, nails and hair.” I personally loved the fact that Bio Sculpture provides a professional glossy nail covering that lasts for up to three weeks, but most importantly for me was the fact that it is applied with minimal buffing and no primers or bonders, meaning there is no de-hydration of the natural nail.

M

y hands are a disgrace! After months of neglect, my nails are weak, flaky and basically tatty looking. As I mentioned last month, taking coconut oil daily has helped my nails to actually grow more that a millimetre before breaking off! However, I finally decided I needed a little help from the professionals. I have tried nearly all the nail systems out there, from acrylic to fibreglass but I have found most leave my nails in a worse condition than before, if that is even possible. Therefore, when Zoe Woods, director of Wood Hairdressing Salon, called me to tell me that they were now offering Bio Sculpture Gel which actually treat the nails rather than just making them look good well I couldn’t get down to the salon quick enough. “Bio Sculpture Gel is an exceptionally durable gel treatment that nurtures the nail bed whilst allowing the nail to look immaculate,” explained Zoe. “It is a healthy

48

“The product range includes various treatment gels that are tailored to suit specific nail types,” Zoe continued. “This ensures that clients receive the treatment most suited to the condition of their nails. Bio Sculpture Gel can be used to sculpt and shape natural nails in order to lengthen existing nails or enhance their natural shape. It gives manicurists the option to create different nail finishes, flexible, medium or solid nails, depending on the clients’ nail plate, type and lifestyle choices. Being a hairdresser means that my nails are constantly immersed in water or in contact with chemicals. Before Bio Sculpture I was having my nails done every day, now it’s only twice a month. I cannot tell you what a difference that makes to someone who has a busy and hectic lifestyle such as myself.” With over 150 gels and nail polish colours, I was struggling to decide on what look I was after. However, as this summer is all about the colour pink, I finally opted on ‘Royal Highness,’ which I am sure my friends will think is perfect for me. Two of my nails were so short that I expected the technician to pull out her box of tips straight away. However, instead of wrecking my nails, she just built up my natural nail with the gel. I was very impressed to say the least.

The treatment was incredibly relaxing, with no harsh filing, no cutting away of the cuticles, no pain and the end result? Well...I am a total fuss pot when it comes to my nails, and usually annoy the hell out of most technicians, but I have to say my nails were faultless. The shape, colour and thickness were perfect; for once I was speechless. “Now Nicola I know you have no patience,” said Zoe with a smile. “Therefore, I thought you would like to know that the gel is removed with a soak-off solution in less than 15 minutes, leaving natural nails in their original or improved condition.” Well that was me sold, I booked in my next appointment and then spent the rest of the day admiring my beautiful talons, much to the annoyance of everyone at work. I would rather refuse a client than have them walk out of my salon looking like they had ‘had work done.’ I am passionate about what I do and I believe that this is reflected in my results. ITS A WRAP

Nicola McGeorge samples the world’s only scientifically proven inch loss body wrap at the Lipo Room. I am not over weight by any means, but no matter how hard I try, I cannot shift the lumps and bumps on my thighs, the so-called love handles and that extra patch on my stomach. Many of you will have heard about the inch loss benefits from the Universal Contour Wrap, but I wondered if it would make any difference to someone with a smaller frame such as myself. Deciding to become a

50

human guinea pig I booked myself into the Liporoom. I was greeted by the bubbly and enthusiastic, head therapist, Lynn Shepherd. She explained the procedure, then added that my dignity would be left at the door before bursting into laughter; this put me at ease straight away. Lynn started off by measuring and marking me with a pen, thus ensuring that I would then be measured at exactly the same point before and after. Next was the actual wrapping, using pre soaked sea clay bandages. I was surprised to find that the bandages were warm, and I could feel my tense muscles crying out with relief. The heat relaxes the body and opens the skins pores allowing the clay to draw out the toxins more rapidly and boost the blood flow. The effects allow for more oxygenation of tissues and lymphatic exchange, increasing the detoxification process. The wrapping process ‘contours’ the body which results in better shaping of the body through cleansing, toning and tightening of the skin and soft tissue. After being dressed in what I can only describe as an over sized space suit, I

had to stand on the power plate for ten minutes to ‘get my circulation moving.’ Now came the time for the really strenuous part... I had to lie down for 45 minutes! Well, you can imagine my embarrassment when Lynn popped her head in half way through and I was snoring away. Once I was ‘cooked’ as Lynn likes to call it, she unwrapped the bandages and began to re – measure me. Not that she had to. I could visually see the difference on my upper arms, thighs and stomach. I could also feel that the wrap had tightened and toned my body while my skin felt deliciously soft. Lynn was delighted with the results, in total I had lost 6 ¾ inches. I had lost ¾ of an inch off my thighs and ½ inch each off my other problem areas. With effects as immediate as this, it is definitely the perfect treatment for those of the ‘Marbella-rati’ who are looking to tone up before a big event or even just hitting the beach. All That

A

GLITTERS

s the world is constantly changing, retailers have to keep up with consumers’ ever-growing need for revolution. The most obvious is fashion, and jewellery is no different. Laura-Jane Bruce talks to Lucy Barnes, manager of Anthony’s Diamonds, about the changing trends in the diamond industry, updating your jewellery and helpful tips on how to care for your prized possessions.

Can you explain the current jewellery trends? Nowadays, ladies are wearing more masculine jewellery, big rings, mens watches such as Rolex, big bracelets, and bold rings. I personally love the look, so I hope it’s here to stay. How have the trends in jewellery changed over the last century? Things used to be more delicate, elegant and dainty, now it’s bold and big coloured stones that are coming back into fashion. How important is a piece of jewellery to an outfit? A piece of jewellery can make or break an outfit. Earrings can light up your face and a beautiful diamond necklace has the ability to make that little black dress dazzle at night, truly making you sparkle and come alive. Tell us about some of the pieces you have in store at the moment. We have pretty much everything at our store; old and new pieces, classic and contemporary, so simply come and take a look, there is something for everyone. We are open from 10am until 2pm Monday to Saturday. How does Anthony’s Diamonds keep up to date with the changing trends in jewellery? We change the style by removing diamonds from old style jewellery and resetting it in modern style rings and pendants. It’s so simple to do; if you have old, dated jewellery, we can renovate it into something modern and new. For example, a three-stone diamond ring could be transformed into a pair of diamond stud earrings and a drop pendant. Anything can be done, it’s currently a fantastic time to cash in or swap your old gold and jewellery you don’t wear and change it into something you will.

56

How do your clients react to the changing jewellery trends? Some of our clients stick to the old trends; others like to swap their jewellery once every few years. If you want to upgrade your old jewels, we give the full amount back, for example, people can buy a one-carat pair of diamond stud earrings and a few years later they would like two-carat studs, we will give the full amount back and then you can put the rest towards your new pair. It’s an excellent scheme because people become bored with the same jewellery very easily, and not many shops have this facility, so we pride ourselves on being different and that we can help people in every way until they are happy. What is the oldest/most exclusive piece of jewellery you have been given to be pawned? We really have had it all; we accept all forms of diamonds, gold and paintings for a loan. It’s a great way of tackling the current economic climate, with the ability to borrow money on a short term period without losing the things you love, as banks no longer have this function.

What is your personal favourite style of jewellery? My personal favourite style of jewellery is art deco, its simply timeless. What do you think the future of jewellery will be? I predict the future of jewellery to be littered with white gold and platinum. It seems as though people are leaning away from yellow gold these days. What is your advice to someone who is looking for an investment piece? My advice to people buying diamonds for an investment is to always purchase one carat and above. When you choose to resell it, it holds its value better than the small stone industry. If I wanted to update my jewellery, old into new, what advice could you give me and how could I go about it? It’s as simple as visiting Anthony’s Diamonds with what you have where we would discuss your options with you, its very easy and we will work closely with you until you are satisfied.

What are your bestsellers? Our bestsellers are second-hand watches and solitaire diamond rings. People come to us because you just cannot beat our prices; our prices are a third less than other shops for the exact same goods. Any tips for the best way to look after jewellery? The best way to clean your jewellery is with a soft toothbrush, boiling hot water and a bit of Mr. Muscle (I know it sounds bizarre) but it brings them up a treat! Tell us something we didn’t know about Anthony’s Diamonds. In the afternoons we are quite happy to come out on house and bank visits to valuate your goods.

“S

o, what do you do?”. It’s one of those questions that is usually proceeded by an answer that you hardly listen to and that often, when asked to recall the career or job explained, you struggle to remember. It’s a rare occasion that the answer captivates and even rarer when, after you find out the ins and outs of their career, that you are left feeling green with envy and so utterly jealous! Sam Reynard possibly has one of the coolest jobs in the world. Relaxed, and with a charming smile, Sam answers my question with the simplest of answers;

“I make movies”.

Founder of Reynard Productions and with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in film and video production from LA, Sam isn’t hanging around! Like many a successful creative, Sam has an infectious energy and you can’t help but be fascinated by his ideas and stories when he describes what it entails to be a film director. “I enjoy getting to know my clients on a personal level and working with them to create a product that they can relate to and meets their expectations” Sam explains. Reynard Productions is an independent film company working in southern Spain and throughout Europe and the US. Although film direction is definitely Sam’s vocation, he keeps his projects broad and varied. Using the latest filming and editing technologies, Reynard Productions offers a variety of diverse video production solutions from

66

music videos to event videography, from short films to company advertisements and corporate videos.

“One of the aspects I love most about what I do is the diversity from project to project.

Last month I was hired to film an aerobatic show in Oxford. The planes were 70 something years old Tiger Moths, which made me question the safety of them seeing as we were flying feet away from each other. There were nine of them in total, all flying in formation. Through-

out my life I’ve always been a bit of an adrenaline seeker, and didn’t see this for what it was, madness. Once a few ‘loop the loops’ were rehearsed, all of which I was present for, we finally landed and luckily I had the shots I needed. The audio was never used, but will always be a reminder that I could have been a good BeeGee!” He shows me the footage, on mute, without the “girlie squealing” and the end result, once the film has gone through postproduction and editing, music has been added and the film re-coloured. It is clear that time and attention to detail is key and all the teams’ efforts really pay off when you see the finished article!

Sam explains the work that’s involved in the creation of something that may even only be just 30 seconds long, and how much dedication and direction is needed to create an advert or corporate movie.

“At Reynard Productions it is crucial that we understand what our clients are looking for, their objectives and goals set, - in order to brainstorm and produce something that is going to make the best impact possible in, what can sometimes be, a very short amount of time.”

“Thing is” explains Sam “rarely do we not accept a project because we always see it as a new challenge. Currently we are working on a lot of private, recreational events and a short movie, which we will be starting production in early August and plan on entering it into film festivals around Europe and North America. I for one love learning new ways of expressing the art of film and capturing inspiring imagery that supports fascinating stories… I am just lucky to have found a career that moves with technology and is being applied more and more as a commercial and marketing tool.” It is very easy to see that Sam works in one fascinating industry and brings a whole new and fresh approach to video production. It is going to be exciting to follow this

man’s career and ultimately name drop once he’s out on the red carpet! Please contact Reynard Productions to see how they can bring your ideas to life: info@reynardproductions.com Tel. 638 843 649

Monthy Legal Advice

Documental Requirements for companies The Corporate Entitities Act regulates three types of companies: Public Limited Companies –PLCs (Sociedades Anónimas), Limited Liability Companies – LLCs (Sociedades Limitadas) and Joint Stock Companies – JSCs (Sociedades Comanditarias por Acciones). LLCs are the most common type formed as the complexity and maintenance costs are lower. An LLC may operate in the market with an independent legal personality and therefore remove any partner liability. The Share Capital, which is the companies guarantee against creditors, must be at least 3000€, fully signed and paid, and does not hold a maximum limit.

PLCs also have an independent legal personality from the partners, but in have a minimum Share Capital of 60,000€, which must have been paid in a quarter by the incorporation time, leaving the remaining payment as debts to the Company Partners (Dividends) with a disbursement deadline of 5 years unless another period is set. Joint Stock Companies follow the rules of PLCs, but it is mandatory to establish a partner that will respond with all their assets for company debts. This type is not used very frequently in the market and is soon likely to disappear.

Document Requirements The documents required for both types of companies are very similar and so we shall begin by considering these similarities. Both types of companies will have to carry two different types of Account Records, one being for the Inventory, Financial Statements and Notes, and the second being The Minute Book and The Members Registration Book. As anticipated LLC must have a “book” in which partners have registered shares; which from an internal share point of view, is the only valid method to identify

the partners of an LLC. For PLCs the situation is much more complex as it is then necessary to differentiate between “shares” that are transmitted through surrender or endorsement thereof, and accounts of all transfers must be noted in The Shareholder Registry. An audit of annual accounts is necessary in two cases; either when requested by shareholders representing 5% of the capital (following the procedure established by law) or in any case when the company does not comply with the requirements to present abridged annual accounts. In all cases the documents required are extensive, but are essential for the proper upkeep of the Company, and in case of the company sale, are required in the corresponding process of due diligence. Alongside other things, the accounts will be examined very closely, and therefore the assistance of an accountant with experience in bookkeeping would greatly facilitate the company´s success, eliminating risks associated with creditor actions and increasing the value of the company It´s common practice to appoint an attorney with experience in this complex matter as a secretary of the board of directors In the case of the board of directors, liability is higher as they are charged with the responsibility to keep proper accounts. Liability is applicable for any acts or omissions committed during administration proceedings that cause damage to the company, and it is enforced by either the shareholders or the Stakeholders. If a company is made bankrupt and the proper accounts were not maintained, the directors are subject to personal liability, and as such, it is always recommended that a legal adviser is kept at hand.

Ramón Garcia regularly advises clients on the restructuring of groups with international elements, creating not only the bylaws but also the different shareholder agreements, report drafts and proceeding with due diligence for companies in merger or acquisition scenarios. Ramón is also experienced within the litigation department, assisting with both criminal and civil lawsuits. A VILLA WITH A DIFFERENCE

I

n certain circles, when people speak of an ‘important’ home, they are referring to a property such as this. In an environment where fawning superlatives are considered gauche, this rather understated description says more than enough, conveying the sense of a property that can hold its own with the finest anywhere in the world.

elsewhere in the property, the views over the beautifully arranged grounds are impressive, though nowhere more so than from the private quarters on the first floor, where a large terrace surveys the greenery beneath and an open expanse of the Mediterranean Sea. Here are a series of private bedroom suites, with the main suite as the jewel in the crown, complete with sitting area, comprehensive dressing room

This superb property is indeed in what can be considered as an ‘International’ category. In such cases, the competition is more International than local, with peers in locations such as Rhode Island, the Côte d’Azur, California and private Caribbean islets. More than just a luxury villa, this is an outstanding home on expansive grounds that evokes a sense of a private estate within one of the finest locations in Marbella. Indeed, with such a property, nothing but the best spot at the finest address would do, and the elevated position in Sierra Blanca ensures the views spanning a 180 degree seaward arc are inspiring, competing with direct vistas of La Concha Mountain on the other side. A few minutes and you’re in Marbella, Puerto Banús or on a golf course, but from this position, you behold it all before you. Two separate gates converge on an expansive forecourt in a classic style, while a discreet driveway leads to the spacious underground garage that con-

80

nects to the technical utilities rooms. A more conventional entrance is made through the front door, which opens up to the living quarters, stylishly laid out in a classic configuration in which the perspective view across the terrace to the imposing fountains draws the eye. At night, this is a feature that enchants and provides a visual reference of great effect, but is only one of several distinguishing features of this fine property. The ground floor is dedicated to the living areas, which flow from the entrance hall to a gentleman’s study, a series of bedroom suites and a sophisticated but intimate lounge with a separate sitting area that can be used as a reading room or a children’s play area, a dining room and finally the tastefully styled hand-built Clive Christian kitchen with pantry, bar and breakfast table. All these rooms are connected to the sweeping covered terrace, and as

and a bathroom in which a singular solid marble bath steals the show. Not to be outdone by the main living areas, the basement level, which also features a purpose-built private cinema, uses large panoramic windows and skylights to allow natural light to flood into its billiards room, gymnasium, modern wine cellar and an indoor swimming pool with sauna, steam baths and showers that would put many five-star spas to shame. Included is a range of hydro-jet features to be enjoyed either indoors or in the outdoor pool just across the immaculate lawn. Here, surrounded by tropical greenery and waterfalls cascading from a rockery, is the saltwater pool that stands out as another distinguishing feature of this stately contemporary home. The centre point of this lower terraced area shrouded in privacy and greenery is a cabana style hut that provides a shaded

spot overlooking the pool. It has space for further facilities such as showers and an outdoor bar/kitchen, though currently these are provided in the nearby guest cottage – in this case a rather understated description of a delightful twobedroom property that replicates the spirit and qualities of the main house on a smaller scale. Designed to be entirely independent if so desired, the cottage even has its own driveway, affording guests, children or staff complete privacy and freedom of movement. Complete enough to be classed an ‘important’ property; this home also has the refinement and bearing to comfortably wear that title. Diana Morales Av. Canovas del Castillo No4 (esquina Av. T

he literal translation of ‘a room with a bath’ has evolved and nowadays a ‘full bathroom’ comprises of four essential elements; bathtub, shower, toilet and sink. Once the necessities are in place, it is up to us to mix and match materials to transform a utilitarian room into a peaceful private spa, a glamourous spot to put on make-up or an eco-friendly place to shave. Today, well designed bathrooms are beautiful, durable and highly functional.

Gone are the days when we tried to spend the minimum time in our bathrooms as they were the tiniest and dingiest of spaces in our dwellings. Our contemporary bathrooms are stylish and luxurious where you can actually relax while you do the needful. They are well accessorized to take care of your hygiene needs and a pride for us to show off to our guests. You begin your day in the bathroom and hence need to design and create this personal hub in an elegant way to set the mood right for the rest of the day.

Luxury can be defined differently for different individuals. For some, simplicity is enduring and for some luxury is what luxury does! Glorious wash basins, whirlpools in the bath tub, slide jets, Jacuzzis, underwater lights or your personal bookshelf; there are countless ways to accessorize and enhance your bathroom. Use of metal or glass in an intelligent way would tempt you to visit this room again and again. It’s a personal choice how you want to define your luxury quotient!

Inspired by nature, the Paradise bath’s ornate design has a striking textured leaf pattern and flowing curves that add to its soft and delicate look. The oval shape creates the perfect space to comfortably relax in. bcdesigns.co.uk

TORQUE TALK

Our in-depth motoring review

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the latest BMW 6-SERIES GRAN COUPE

A

s buyer appetite for traditional four-door saloons wanes, the desire for stylish four-door coupes is growing. In this changing environment the 6-Series Gran Coupe, BMW’s first ever four-door coupe, is thus a logical extension of their successful 6-Series Coupe and Cabriolet family. Success in this case means the 9,400 cars sold in a partial sales year in 2011, where the Cabriolet

was introduced in the summer, followed by the Coupe late in the year. The 4,100 cars sold in the first quarter of 2012 give a clearer indication of the 6-Series potential sales volume, and BMW think that the Gran Coupe will likely cannibalise Coupe rather than Cabriolet sales. All three models are made in BMW’s Dingolfing plant near Munich.

BMW enthusiasts will remember the BMW CS Concept car from 2007 whose gorgeous lines were widely swooned over at the time. Sadly, the onset of the financial crisis put the kibosh on this project, which would have been a larger undertaking than most outsiders realise. Speaking to Karim Habib, BMW’s Head of Exterior Design, I learned that BMW had actually taken the CS to production ready status when the plug was pulled.

115

TORQUE TALK “Apart from the economic uncertainly, the big issue was simply cost as it had a unique platform and body with few parts common to other models at the time to help amortise the cost,” he explained.

ments introduced with the 7-Series,” he said. “This makes for good economies of scale, and allows BMW to offer a very distinctive and stylish relatively low volume model for a reasonable price.”

The reason for the bespoke nature of the CS was its size, which did not relate to other BMW models at the time. “Its perfectly balanced proportion belied its actual physical size, and just like the CS Concept the production car would have been over five metres long and over two metres wide.” In parenthesis, the Gran Coupe, takes the broad concept of the CS and distils it into a package that is far more realistic in size and price.

With an overall length of 5007mm on a 2,968mm wheelbase, 113mm longer than the Coupe and Cabriolet, the Gran Coupe is 1,894mm wide and 1,392mm tall. As the Gran Coupe seems to be just the right size inside and out, a larger car of this type seems exorbitant. Perhaps the CS Concept was too ambitious even for the good times?

“The 6-Series Gran Coupe uses many chassis and drivetrain components from the 5 and 6-Series, that themselves share some suspension ele-

When you stand back and look at the Gran Coupe, it is very clearly BMW in all its styling cues even if the overall shape is fresh. The car has a very simple and pure shape, with the distinctive Hofmeister kink on the C-pillar and frameless doors that underline the cars sporty intent. The 20-inch wheels on our test cars come close to the arches, giving the car a planted and purposeful stance. The six-cylinder

“We mooted the Gran Coupe in 2009, about the time we were tooling up the new 6-Series Coupe and Cabriolet for production,” Karim continued. “Once the packaging had been settled, the project took on a life of its own, and everyone was very excited by what was taking shape in the studio.”

116

“The Gran Coupe shares the Coupe body panels up to the front doors, with its front wings made from a composite material, and the bonnet from aluminium,” he said. “The front windscreen is also Coupe. The only change is the addition of chrome accents under the bumper. Every other outer panel is new, along with the body in white aft of the front bulkhead.”

TORQUE TALK

cars have 17inch wheels in some markets but 18s in Germany, with 19s and 20s as an option. The V8 powered 650i has 19s standard and 20s as an option. The strong body swage line gives the car visual muscle as well as helping to make the composite, aluminium and steel body panels more rigid. The contours are of course governed by the angles that can be achieved by the material that least favours sharp lines, in this case, aluminium. As it starts, so the Gran Coupe finishes, and when you look at the subtle but aerodynamically effective built-in spoiler lip that forms the trailing edge of its boot lid, you realise just how skilled the design team at BMW are at working in three-dimensions. And the angels

are in the details as they say, with features like the third brake light that stretches across the rear window to form its top. The 6-Series Gran Coupe is a very beautiful car in a modern and yet classical way, and I would go so far as to say it is the best looking of its genre so far. While many regard the Aston Martin Rapide as the visual benchmark for this type of car, I personally think it is both a stereotype and an engineering cop-out.

Really a lengthened DB9, the Rapide is thus proportionately too narrow for its length. And being derived directly from the DB9 coupe, its rear seat packaging suffers accordingly. The Mercedes CLS looks rather fussy in comparison to both the Rapide and the Gran Coupe. I would characterise it as a restless design that is over styled and will struggle to withstand the test of time. The Gran Coupe neatly side steps these issues by being a fairly simple and honest design derived from the pretty and up-to-the-minute 6-Series Coupe. Its BMW styling cues are very strong in all respects and if you were to take off all the badges and the double kidney grille, it would still clearly stand out as a BMW.

117

TORQUE TALK The massive boot space is as impressive as its versatility. The 406-litre boot is a large rectangular space capable of swallowing four full sized suitcases, making the Gran Coupe a genuine touring car for four. That said, BMW say it is a 4 + 1, as the centre rear seat is fine for smaller people. Load capacity is boosted to an impressive 1,265 litres by folding down the rear seatbacks, and the

only practical restriction to loading long, thin objects is the entry angle between the top of the rear bumper and the boot opening. While by no means as capacious as an estate car, this is still pretty good going for a sleek four-door coupe. A major bugbear of the genre is ingress and egress from the rear. The second generation CLS is better than the original, but the Rapide is particularly poor in this respect.

118

With a roofline that is not quite as low as the others in the critical area where you find your head as you duck down through the door opening, the 6-Series Gran Coupe is the best of the bunch. However, you have to watch the forward edge of the rear door glass when you duck forwards as its curvature brings it perilously close to your face. The taller you are, the more this is accentuated!

The interior shares the elegant and modern dashboard, instrument pack and centre console design with its 6-Series siblings, which is no bad thing, with the aft section of the console extended and adapted to accommodate the climate controls and air vents for the larger rear compartment. Our test cars had the optional and very appealing two-tone BMW Individual leather interior trim with

colour coded stitching. The white wood trim is particularly unusual and appealing as it has a subtle grey pattern in it that is only seen close up. This gives it depth as well as a more organic look and feel. Another feature that adds to the cars exclusive feel is the powered door closers normally only found on flagship models like the 7-Series. As with other 6-Series models, BMW offers three levels of in-car audio;

basic, Harman Kardon, and the top-ofthe range Bang & Olufsen system. My test cars had the B&O system, which I ran my benchmark test CD through. I have to say that I was very disappointed with this system, especially when compared with the less expensive but vastly more musical and transparent Burmester system I recently auditioned in the new Porsche Carrera. We were able to drive two versions of the Gran Coupe, both powered by

TORQUE TALK turbocharged six cylinder engines. The 640i uses BMW’s ubiquitous 2,979cc twin-scroll turbocharged straight six with direct fuel injection and Valvetronic. Output is 320hp from 5,800 to 6,000rpm with 450Nm of torque between 1,300 and 4,500rpm.

Only the straight-six models were available at the launch, and BMW sees these as the dominant engines in all markets. The power and torque output of both sixes is very impressive, and in normal driving you will almost never wish for more.

Helped by the eight close ratios in its automatic gearbox, the 1,750kg 640i blasts to 100km/h in 5.4 sec, exactly the same time as the 40kg

The petrol motor is of course more high revving and sporting by nature, but you cannot argue with the massive wave of torque pro-

heavier 640d, which has 313hp at 4,400rpm and a whopping 630Nm of torque between 1,500 and 2,500rpm. Both cars are electronically limited to 250km/h

duced by the heavy oil version.

I drove the 640i first, followed by the 640d. These models were launched in June, and the 650i Gran Coupe that goes on sale in the third quarter will be the first BMW model to get the new and more efficient 450hp TwinPower Turbo V8 petrol motor.

Not only does this extra torque make it more relaxing to drive over distance, it is also noticeably more economical. BMW say the 640i will do 7.7 to 7.9 L/100km, and the 640d bests it with 5.5 to 5.7 L/100km. The Gran Coupe has a basic drag coefficient of 0.31, and the fuel economy numbers are also dependant upon the wheel and tyre choice.

The claimed differential in fuel consumption certainly proved to be quite accurate. Driving both models equally rapidly over our test route, which featured twisty mountain and country roads with a lot of fuel gobbling braking and acceleration, and some motorway work, I found that the 640d drank about 70 percent of the juice required by its petrol-powered sister.

Apart from not having to work as hard, the more torque rich bi-turbo diesel also has more big-engined ‘waftability’ in its nature. This deep well of twist thrusts the car down the road and out of corners with minimal effort. It also has plenty of character, and is actually very engaging in its own way on a twisty road. While the diesel motor might not rev as hard and as high as its petrol counterpart, its clear inline six acous-

119

TORQUE TALK tic and the push in the back you get every time you go into the throttle makes its own strong case. The fact that you spend less time in filling stations is valuable in itself. All our test cars had the optional 20inch wheels, which look really good, and I was surprised that these massive Runflats managed to avoid corrupting the ride too much even on some well decayed Sicilian country roads. Handling and steering is very good with low roll angles when pressing on in the bends, especially in Sport mode. The car tracks very well and is not moved particularly by midcorner bumps. It was not unexpected that the longer wheelbase of the Gran Coupe seemed to substantially mitigate the remote and artificial feel of the Active steering system I clearly remember from when my 640i Coupe drive last year. Either that or BMW has tweaked the system since. The Gran Coupe thus felt more intuitive and less ‘microchip influenced’ in its driver feedback. In the final analysis, the Gran Coupe is not the most engaging drivers’ car in the BMW range. Its raison d’être is to be a fast and stylish grand touring car for a sophisticated audience.

120

In terms of ride quality, all our test cars had 8.5J and 9.0J x 20-inch wheels, shod with 245/35ZR20 and 275/30ZR20 rubber. While the springs and dampers are calibrated for these sizes, there is no doubt that ride quality would be even better on smaller wheels. I personally would go the 19-inch route as the best overall compromise between ride, handling and looks. This is partly because I suspect the slight issue with ride even on high-speed motorway runs was influenced by the higher unsprung weight of the 20-inch Runflats. I know from past experience that both active damping, which the Gran Coupe has, and air suspension, which it does not, do not like heavy wheels and tyres, and there was a feeling on some surfaces and combinations of bumps that the ride would have benefitted from lighter footwear. That said, the ability of the suspension to absorb the worse of the bumps despite these big boots was impressive. There were a number of road surface aberrations that I saw approaching and could not avoid, which did not send the expected level of bump-thump to the cabin. In practice, the Comfort setting was often less comfortable than

Sport on some surfaces, since it does not pull things back together as quickly in preparation for the next bump when you are pressing on. Thus, I found myself using the Sport setting the most for its combination of ride equilibrium and snappier engine and transmission response. As with other such systems, Sport+ is a bit too aggressive for normal driving, and is best left out of the equation unless you are in attack mode. To further extend the Gran Coupe’s versatility, XDrive will be added as an option, with the 650i first. While this will be no doubt be popular in markets with severe winters, some enthusiasts, spurred on by the M550d ideology will no doubt tick the 4WD box for performance reasons. It would certainly be nice to have this option on the torque rich 640d. The BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe has great eye appeal and drives well too. I was also impressed with the versatility of its rear seat and boot arrangement, and very enthusiastic about the performance and economy of the 640d model in particular. The Gran Coupe is one of the highlights of my driving year so far. Local Dealer: Guarnieri

The M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm lens is a high-grade fast aperture portrait lens featuring metallic construction and a light weight of just 10.7 oz. A large bright 50mm front lens element compliments a sophisticated optical design of ten individual lens elements in nine groups, including a total of three ED lenses and two HR lenses. The 75mm f/1.8 is a certainly interesting lens and when equipped to a micro four-third camera, you get a focal length of roughly 150mm due to the crop factor found in all of the cameras. It will work rather well under low lighting conditions and this is thanks to the wide aperture that Olympus has managed to install. EAST meets

S

ala Beach is famed as much for its cuisine as its effervescent atmosphere and celebrity appeal, this month SOCIETY MARBELLA had the opportunity to indulge in the ultimate East Meets West experience. Executive Chef, Chris B and Sous Chef, Usanee Chongtawin treated the team to a feast comprising of the finest International and Oriental dishes on offer. To commence, we sampled Coco Cola BBQ spare ribs with Cajun fries

124

featuring Chris’ secret recipe; rich and gooey, the delightful sauce perfectly encased the succulent meat. “Delicious,” I announced in adoration whilst covered in the delectable coating; maybe not one to order on a date! The heavenly meat fell off the bone with the touch of a fork and the large wooden plate was soon lying empty. Having enjoyed our first taste of the West, Usanee kindly presented prawn pad thai. Already an enormous oriental food fan, Usanee had a slight advantage and her delicious noodle

COSTA CUISINE dish did not disappoint. Perfumed yet light, the appetizing rice noodles and juicy prawns married wonderfully and were only enhanced by the sprinkling of crispy peanuts. Next to arrive, a Chateaubriand for two served with beer battered onion rings, roasted vine tomatoes, grilled mushrooms and Béarnaise sauce as well as a striking seafood platter boasting a medley of Alaskian king

crab, langoustines, tiger prawns and lobster. Both visually remarkable, the seafood piled high upon a bed of ice, simple and fresh, just the way it should be and the generous Chateaubriand, which was soon demolished, tender and moist and as enjoyable on bite as on sight. The artfully displayed mouthwatering roasted vine tomatoes, bursting with flavour, added a taste of the Mediterranean to this divine dish of French heritage. The additional accompaniments didn’t go to waste either; “I like these,” my colleague

announced, devouring the onion rings, “what are they?” “onion rings,” I replied puzzled. “What’s inside them?” she continued. “Onion!?” the table responded in unison. It seems there is always one blonde moment to surface when a food review is involved! Our next helping included Ceaser salad with grilled lobster and chicken with cashew nuts. A crisp bowl of fresh salad coated in a creamy Ceaser

dressing caught my eye with a generous sized lobster perched nonchalantly on top; a wonderfully luxurious alternative to the traditional prawn option. With the sun shining heavily on our backs, I decided this would be the dish I would select on my next visit to Sala Beach, when I didn’t have to share! Having

polished off another taste from the West, we continued on our Eastern adventure. The aromatic chicken was bursting with flavour and the crunchy nuts added an exciting texture and variety. Although a dish I would usually associate with an evening meal, I couldn’t help but note its lightness and blissful fragrance. To conclude our gastronomic journey we continued East with the Thai Green Chicken Curry. Juicy chicken chunks immersed in a creamy and scented jus; vibrant peppers adding to the vivid tone. Classic steamed rice accompanied; ideal for enjoying the additional sauce. We polished off the feast with a glass of refreshing Laurent Perrier champagne, as enjoyable and luxurious as the fare itself. After our final bite, it appeared the scoreboard was even. I spent hours trying to decide whether Chris or Usanee deserved the crown but with both offerings as palatable as the other, you will have to head down to Sala Beach and decide for yourself! COSTA CUISINE

and all that... By Christie Holland

N

ew style American diner Route 66 is more than your traditional burger bar. Head chef Tomasz Matuszczak trained under the Michelin Star chef Richard Corrigan at Bentleys restaurant in Dublin, and the Michelin Star Cliff House Hotel in Ardmore, thus the restaurant boasts an inviting menu featuring homemade recipes, oozing in quality. Since its inauguration, Route 66 has welcomed everyone from Premiership footballers David Bentley and Peter Crouch to television star Liz Locke from The Apprentice, proving that their new innovative American gastronomy is truly fit for the famous. On arrival, Tomasz and manager Dom Aldworth welcomed us to one of the tables on their bustling terrace. The duo quickly ordered us some cocktails to sample as we began to peruse the extensive menu. Wanting to taste a broad spectrum of their mouth-watering dishes, we decided to commence with the first meal of the day; breakfast. With a series of entrees to follow, we knew we had to pace ourselves; an idea that proved exceptionally difficult when two impressive platters arrived before us. We had opted for the traditional Full 66, boasting two impressively round fried eggs, both with the required runny centre, which we soon opted for dipping our delicious breakfast fries into; no one said we were particularly well mannered at food reviews! The dish also contained two sausages, two rashes of English bacon crisped to perfection, baked beans, black pudding, hash browns and toast. Every-

126

thing you need and more for a filling start to the day! In addition, we were presented with the American Main Street, filled with two eggs, sausage, crispy American bacon, breakfast fries, waffles and the obligatory maple syrup, all for only €8.66. Let me warn you, don’t fill up and opt to eat the waffles at the end; saving the best until last doesn’t really work here! After polishing off two delectable breakfasts, we decided to move onto lunch! Tomasz appeared from the kitchen with Sante Fe nachos…our starter! At only €7.66, the decadent plate of nachos lay before us, piled high with diced chicken, shredded lettuce, cubed tomatoes, coriander, jalapenos, melted cheese and served with sour cream and guacamole. Victoria our summer intern had joined us on the food

review and I saw her pounce on the platter as soon as it reached the table. “Remember we have many more courses to follow,” we assured her, knowing all too well that feeling of your first food review and filling up too early! The succulent chicken combined with the flavourful coriander and rich jalapeños proved an undeniable combination, and we soon all found ourselves having to ask the waiter to kindly take the plate away before we polished off another full dish. Following our breakfast and starter course, we were presented with the renowned flame grilled T-bone steak and the Mother Road burger; a true meat feast. The former has already been tweeted about to thousands of followers on Twitter and demolished by footballer Glenn Johnson,

COSTA CUISINE so it was safe to say we had high expectations. Our photographer had snuck into the kitchen to catch a picture of the meat at its best and her exclaimation “wait until you see this” on return had us all almost dribbling. As one of the few restaurants in Puerto Banus serving T-bone steak, Route 66 knew they needed to impress, thus searched for the highest quality meat supplier whose produce is hung for 21 days prior to delivery and who meets all European Union Standards. As soon as I took a bite, I was fully appreciative of all their hard work; the tender meat melted in my mouth and fell apart on touch. Served with garlic mushrooms and fries or a baked potato, this is one dish you cannot visit Puerto Banus and fail to sample! The Mother Road burger was equally as impressive; Dom explained to us that the perfect burger is achieved by calculating the right amount of meat to fat ratio, which ensures it is moist and appetizing; something that Route 66 have certainly mastered. Available cooked to order, this was unlike any other burger I had tried before. If you fancy something a little different, why not add a topping; for only 66 cents each, you can pile crispy American bacon, Swiss, Cheddar, Blue, Philly or Goats cheese as well as Jalapenos for a spicy touch or a fried egg or onions! If you think the Mother Road might be a little too much for you to handle, why not opt for The Blues Brothers Favourite; the half pounder with the same goodness, just half the size. Alternatively if you aren’t a meat fan, the Springfield burger is tailored for vegetarians and served in a freshly baked cheesy roll; Route 66 really does cater for all. Having spotted the Springfield, I glanced over at the menu again, eager to see if other vegetarian options were available. With American cuisine stereotypically focused around meat, I was impressed to find an array of delicious sounding vegetarian options including the 66 Pasta. Penne pasta topped with fresh asparagus, pine nuts, tomatoes, parmesan, garlic, rocket, basil, sundried tomatoes, all served in a fragrant tomato based sauce; definitely one I will be trying on my next visit! Next was the mixed platter combo including Chicago mob cheese fingers, chicken

wings slow cooked in Cajun spices, Jalapeno peppers, Cajun calamari and garlic bread. One of the refreshing factors about Route 66 is that 99% of the menu is homemade; the kitchen team work closely together to progress the menu and introduce new recipes. Dom explained that when the restaurant first opened, they bought in all the sauces required, however within three days they were all disposed of and the kitchen had created their own. Now all the accompaniments you enjoy at Route 66 are freshly prepared in house; the homemade BBQ sauce created using firewater Bourbon, among other secret ingredients, was ideal for smothering over the delightful cheese fingers. Our penultimate course, the Chicago Ribrack, was soon placed in the centre of the table; a generous portion of BBQ pork ribs, slow cooked in beer to tenderize the meat, served with fries, fresh coleslaw and corn on the cob. Perfectly tender is the only phrase I could use to describe the meat, as it fell off the bone the moment I dug my knife in; rich in flavour, this is definitely ribs at their best. To conclude, we welcomed the West Coast salmon fillet; Cajun salmon accompanied by a tangy lime and garlic dip, served with salad and steamed rice. A invigorating and healthy option you wouldn’t normally associate with an all American diner which again emphasized the diversity of Route 66’s menu. “This is my regular,” Angela pointed out, “people don’t usually expect to find such a healthy dish on our menu but we thought it was very important to cater to all,” something they certainly do. The salmon looked so inviting I lifted my fork wanting to dive in, but I simply couldn’t, the ribs had truly finished me off, so instead I sat back, sipped my Sante Fe Sunset cocktail and decided that I would order the salmon on my subsequent visit! Everything your need to keep the little ones entertained.

ANIMAL MAGIC With the holidays soon approaching, now is the time to look around for exciting activities to entertain your little ones with this summer. The Costa del Sol offers an abundance of explorations from adventure park Tivoli World, to the beautiful butterfly park in Benalmadena. Alternatively, why not learn to Cable Ski in Nueva Andalucía or dolphin watch in Gibraltar? Each month SOCIETY MARBELLA will bring you all the details you need to keep your kids happy and entertained all summer long.

T

he Zoo de Castellar, nested just outside the village of Castellar de la Frontera, about ten minutes inland from Sotogrande and adjacent to Sotogrande International School, is not your standard zoo or animal refuge. Originally a private rescue sanctuary, the zoo was not opened to the public until 2002, primarily to raise funds for the everincreasing number of animals arriving daily, but also to raise awareness to the public. All the animals living at Castellar have been rescued by the police or customs, located near the border; many of the residents were saved having been illegally smuggled between Europe and Africa. For years, the zoo remained unknown, unvisited and exceptionally silent. However, as it has grown in age, it has also grown in popularity and is now one of the Costa del Sol’s most incredible attractions. Castellar offers the animals a fresh start and a new home, allowing them to live in environmental conditions similar to their natural habitat, enabling them to reproduce and continuing to preserve the species. The zoo recently came to the attention of the public after a three-month-old lion cub was brought to them

148

having been kept in appalling conditions by a travelling circus. When the cub was found, he had no water or proper food, all his fur had fallen out and he was experiencing extreme pain. Once the lion, now named Bundo, was safe at Castellar, the team discovered he was blind in one eye and needed an emergency operation to save the other one. The zoo does not receive any funding from the government and only survives on donations, but with the tests and operation proving very expensive, the zoo relied on supporters to help save Bundo. Local restaurant Small World Café put on a fundraiser and many other animal lovers raised money to pay for the necessary procedures. Bundo is now recovering in his new home, hoping for lots of visitors to come and wish him well. Although you are currently not allowed to stroke Bundo, kids and adults alike will adore watching this happy creature roam around his surroundings knowing he is safe and well. In addition to Bundo, the zoo is also home to Princessa, a Bengali Tiger cub whose personality is so calm and friendly you can stroke, walk and maybe even cuddle her. She lives among an array of Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs, monkeys, birds, hyenas, rabbits and even domes-

princesa

tic chickens; the zoo boasts over 500 animals and over 120 different species. Unlike a standard zoo, Castellar is very interactive and children are able to touch and play with the animals, you can even purchase bags of seeds to feed the animals on your journey. There is also the possibility of joining the buddy system, which involves sponsoring an animal to help improve its life. In return you will receive regular updates on your buddy’s progress and day-to-day activities. Whilst roaming among the animals, ensure your children learn as much as possible, the park rangers are on hand to help and inform regarding the animals’ biology, origin and conservation, ensuring your trip is also educational and informative. Although some parents may be wary of allowing their children to play and interact with these exotic species, rest assured the petting areas are very well controlled and the staff are all trained professionals. There aren’t many places your children can play with a lion cub or feed BUNDO a pot-bellied pig, and a trip to Zoo de Castellar is sure to be talk on the playground when school returns! travel to my house for a complementary meeting, and on his first visit we chatted about the problems I was having with my two rescue dogs, Bobby and Marley, my Pomeranian, Lee-Lou and my Spaniel, Troy; he even showed me some tricks to get them to stay in their beds, something I had previously been unable to master! Gary asked me a series of questions to understand a little bit more about my girls and observed them in their natural surroundings to grasp more details about their personalities. “What makes you most stressed out when walking your dog?” Gary questioned, “Is it, pulling on the lead? Lunging or barking at other dogs? Leaping at chasing cars? Not staying when you tell them to, or not coming back when they are called?” “Umm… all of the above,” I replied sheepishly.

W

ith four devilish dogs at home, I am constantly on the lookout for an answer to my prayers; ideally a trainer to help tame my monsters. Having heard of David the Dogman via local media and radio, I decided to have a look at his website and as I was reading through David’s recommendations, I fell across Gary Joynson from Calahonda Pet Dog School. Gary’s website emphasized his teaching method of positive reinforcement using praise and positive actions and rewards rather than punishment or correctional actions in order to teach your dog right from wrong; this immediately impressed me and I contacted Gary right away. With three dogs under a year and a half, I decided to start with a private lesson at home before moving into a class environment. Gary was more than happy to

150

On our first official lesson we began by separating the girls as they are very attached to each other and Gary noticed they were paying each other more attention than us so we began with Bobby, the naughtier of the two. Gary started by showing me how to walk with her then gave me the opportunity to try myself. To begin with Bobby had zero interest preferring to sniff every speck of the ground around us and leap at every passer-by. However after twenty minutes she was beginning to get the hang of it, and was realising her good behaviour was rewarded. Throughout the lesson, Gary happily answered my million questions advising me on everything from barking problems to dog food and patiently helped me retrieve all four dogs when they bounded down to the beach when I accidentally left the gate open! It was safe to say I was impressed he decided to return the following week, and al-

though he assured me Bobby and Marley were not the naughtiest dogs he had ever met, I was unsure if I believed him! Two months on and I can’t believe the difference in the girls already. We still have a long way to go but I never thought I would be able to take them out for a walk at the same time, let them off the lead and for them to happily return to my side. Gary is always available by email if I have a query between our lessons, an extensively valuable attribute. His emails always include the tag line,

“a dog that’s a pleasure to walk is a pleasure to own”

and finally having two dogs that are heading in that direction, I know exactly what he means! Calahonda Pet Dog School meet on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 10am and on Thursday evenings at 5pm in Parque de Calahonda in the heart of the urbanisation. The classes are aimed at all levels of handlers and dogs, and each formal instructional lesson will last no longer than one hour. In addition to basic skills, you will have the opportunity to gain Code of Conduct awards, not just for handling but also for knowledge of national and local by-laws and how to care for your dog. In addition, private one-to-one sessions are available between Benalmadena and Marbella. For more information on Calahonda Pet Dog School, please contact Gary: Tel. 951 272 695 cpdsspain@gmail.com

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY

2219 Tes.

Tes is a young, male collie cross who has been at the kennels since he was around three months old. He has a beautiful ‘mane’ of a coat and a very sweet nature; another beautiful dog who gets overlooked. He must be around two years old now. He is not shy but never pushes himself forward; he would make someone a great pet.

2618A Minx.

Minx is one of six Bodeguero/Mini Pinscher crosses, so will remain small when fully grown. We have three girls, Minnie, Minx and Titch and three boys, Latte, Domino and Dice. Small breed puppies like these are highly sought-after, so hurry to the kennels (on our new road!!!) to choose yours soon!

2081 Emma (Mrs Peel).

A few months ago, SOCIETY MARBELLA reported on ADANA and the problems with the road leading up to the kennels. For many years, they have been campaigning for Estepona Ayuntamiento to repair the track, with former Mayor David Valadez previously issuing orders to carry out a repair. Unfortunately however, it was only a patch-up job which didn’t last through the winter rains. The ‘road’ steadily worsened; in places it became very narrow with a sheer drop on one side and the rock face on the other! Volunteers dreaded the journey to the kennels and many potential adopters were deterred. Mary Page, the Vice President of ADANA even had to put four new tyres on her Land Rover in one year!! As a local politician, it seemed obvious to Mary that ADANA needed to establish links with the new team in the Estepona Town Hall, so soon after the PP election victory, she made an appointment to meet Susana Casano, the Councillor responsible for voluntary organisations such as ADANA. “Last month, our relentless but gentle nagging finally paid off. Thanks to Susana, the road has been repaired to a high standard.” Mary gushed. If you would like further ADANA news, please contact them on 667 234 592. adana.es

Emma is possibly the prettiest German Shepherd cross I have ever seen. She is a wonderful, gentle girl who loves to play ball and would fit in with any family. She is also great with children!

To offer Minx, Emma, Tes or any of the other dogs at ADANA a home, contact the kennels on 952 113 467 or email adoptions@ adana.es. adana.es facebook.com/ADANA.Estepona

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY

Arboretum Marbella have organised a series of monthly film screenings surrounding the global movement Transition Towns, a campaign to create more sustainable communities. The first screening, ‘The Power of Community, How Cuba Survived Peak Oil’, took place last month and detailed the challenges the Cuban people faced when the collapse of the Soviet Union and US sanctions left them with limited fuel, wide-spread power cuts and food shortages. It illustrated that by working together and making simple changes in the way in which they lived and worked, they were able to overcome the crisis while creating a more sustainable community. The crisis mimicked the problem experts predict will affect the price and availability of oil in future decades. The next free screening, entitled ‘The Crude Awakening’, takes place on July 13 at 7pm at FNAC, La Cañada, Marbella and looks at the problems caused by diminishing fossil fuels, outlining how they can be overcome. Aqwa Mist’s Final Unveiling Back at the beginning of last month, Aqwa Mist held its official opening party, and at the end of June, saw the ‘Final Unveiling of Aqwa Mist.’ Located underneath the ever bustling La Sala, Aqwa Mist is the first ‘super club’ to hit Puerto Banús to offer partygoers an exclusive nightclub experience. The opening party was teeming with celebrities and full of utopian entertainment, and the final unveiling was nothing short of that. Aqwa Mist opened its 30ft waterfall to its guests in a grand gesture like no other, as socialites, celebrities and guest were invited to the unveiling of something truly spectacular. Sala Group’s chairman Ian Radford quotes: “We were really excited to have launched just in time for summer, which was always one of our main goals, however we are even more excited to unveil our evolved interior design of Aqwa Mist. This is a fresh new concept and very different to what you would have seen at the opening. We aim to set the bar high for clubbing standards on the coast. This is our first step into what will be an exciting year in terms of entertainment and interior design developments within Aqwa Mist.” The stunning interior will be something that has never been seen before at the opening nor on the coast, with water features outside and now also inside the club. There is state of the art lighting inside the venue with an unrivaled sound-system in place for true club goers. While the clientele who require ultimate privacy there is a Super VIP Room, with private bar and terrace, dedicated waiter and a rock pool Jacuzzi. The 600-person club is open from from 1am – 6am weekdays and extending that to 7am at the weekends. aqwamistbanus.com

ARTISTIC FLAIR

Another event at the H10 Hotel Andalucía Plaza in Marbella featured French born Eric Aman, famed for his paintings and sculptures. His most noteworthy pieces include a cycle of murals with the story of Santa Elisabeth Seton in the church in Livorno, Italy, as well as the monumental statue of Santa Catalina de Siena made purely of Carrara marble, created for the Basilica of San Pedro in the Vatican, and the famous statue of ‘Carmo’ in the town of Carmona. Aman demonstrates with these pieces that he not only dominates the skill of sculpting and monumental paintings, but also he possesses a great artistic simplicity and purity, where he skillfully combines idealism with realism. All of which make this very special artist exemplary of the new contemporary humanism. 22 of his latest paintings are on exhibition until July 12 from 9am until 10pm. eric-aman.com

FOCUS ON

PHOTOGRAPHY By Laura-Jane Bruce

Chic Happens is one of our most popular segments in SOCIETY MARBELLA. With the perfect model, an idyllic setting and a creative photographer, you can create a jaw dropping fashion spread that simply jumps off the page. We have worked closely with Jorge Mier-Teran for quite some time now and we wanted to share with you why he is fast becoming the coast’s most sought after photographer. Tell us a little about your background. Two years ago I was working in an office as a computer developer, but I was so bored of the daily routine. The recession hit the company I was working for quite severely, and I was made redundant. From this, I decided I wanted to change my life and began to convert my passion into a profession. I’m currently teaching in Photography School Apertura in Málaga, and along side this I work in advertising and fashion photography. So did you study in the profession or was it simply a hobby that transformed like you mentioned previously? I initially studied at the Photography School Apertura in Málaga where I now teach, and learnt the art of photography as a way of life. I learnt to see the world in a whole other way. What encouraged you to take up photography? I enjoy it so much; I’m like a small boy with a new toy every time I find new material to photograph. I wouldn’t change that feeling for anything. I have so much creativity inside; it’s simply bursting to get out. Where would your dream location be for a fashion shoot? Anywhere really. I have a recurring dream to travel to India because it would be a completely different backdrop to anything you could achieve here. Different culture, different people, just a different place entirely, and I would love to turn this dream into a reality some day. Do you have a particular style of photography? All photographers need a style but not all have one. It’s necessary to envelop a particular style that makes you stand out from the rest of the talent on the coast. Other photographers have remarked that I have my own signature style, but I believe my photography changes with all different surroundings and each individual task.

What do you enjoy photographing most? I would have to say fashion and daily life. I continually have my camera with me as you never know where there is a picture waiting to be taken. What or who are your inspirations? The Internet is a vast gateway to the fashion photography world. You only need to know where to look for inspiration. If I had to choose a particular person, I would say Madrid based Paco Peregrín. He tells so much in his pictures, you can really see the story he is trying to evoke in each shot, and he’s photographed for some of the biggest names; Nike, Diesel and Levi’s to name a few. That’s something I would like to emulate in the future. mierteran.com Model: Melissa Roberts Makeup Artist: Noelia Fuentes
